Claude Monet’s Haystack painting fetches $110.7 mn at auction NEW YORK - A Claude Monet painting from his celebrated “Meules” (Haystacks) series fetched $110.7 million in New York on Tuesday in an auction record for the French Impressionist master. The sale at Sotheby’s -- the first time the work had come to auction since 1986 -- fetched one of the 10 highest prices ever seen at auction. The total, which includes fees and the commission, was more than 44 times the previous record for the work. It was the first time an Impressionist painting fetched more than $100 million. Monet painted his 25 “Meules” compositions during the winter of 1890-1891 at his home in Giverny, in France’s Normandy region. In each piece, Monet showed the light and surroundings of the same scene as they changed at different times of day, with the varying seasons and during various types of weather. Another painting from the series was sold in November 2016 by the Christie’s auction house in New York for $81.4 million. The piece sold at Sotheby’s is among the most immediately recognizable Monet paintings. It distinguishes itself from others in the series by its vibrant paint palette, dramatic diagonal brush-

strokes of varying directions that meet at the center and a unique perspective with only part of the first haystack appearing in the foreground. “We feel -- and I think people when they stand in front of this would largely agree -- that this is an even nicer example” than the one sold in 2016, Sotheby’s Julian Dawes told AFP. “It’s enchanting. You just can’t look away.” The anonymous collector who brought the painting to be auctioned had purchased it in 1986 at Christie’s for just $2.5 million. The last record for a Monet painting was set in May 2018 during a Christie’s sale when his “Nympheas en fleur” (Water Lilies in Bloom) sold for $84.6 million. “This could be a defining moment for Monet’s market,” Dawes said. Despite the allure and popularity of contemporary art, Dawes said Impressionism has an enduring quality. “Something that I really like about impressionism in general is that the market tends to be really consistent. People love impressionism,” he added. “It doesn’t change from generation to generation. These paintings are 150 years old and they’ve always been beloved.” (afp)

(L-R) Actors Laurence Fishburne, Halle Berry and Keanu Reeves attend a handprint ceremony honoring Keanu Reeves at the TCL Chinese Theatre IMAX forecourt on May 14, 2019 in Hollywood, California.

Keanu Reeves sinks hands, feet at Hollywood’s Chinese Theatre

LOS ANGELES - Actor Keanu Reeves signed his name and sunk his hands and feet in fresh cement Tuesday in front of the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood. More than 30 years have passed since the star of “The Matrix,” “Speed” and “Point Break” tried his luck by taking his car from Toronto to Hollywood to become an actor. “It is a great honor to be here and to be invited to this remarkable, historical, magical place,” Reeves told a crowd gathered for the ceremony at the Chinese Theatre. “To be included among all of the incredible artists who have made their mark here over the past 92 years, to be a part of this Hollywood tradition started by Sid Grauman all those years ago and which continues to this day, I thank

you. Thank you very much.” Born in Lebanon’s capital Beirut in 1964 but raised in New York and Toronto, Reeves left high school to become an actor. He came to Hollywood in 1986 to work on the film “Youngblood,” also starring Rob Lowe. Reeves rose to fame with “Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure” and its sequel, but is best known for his role as Neo in “The Matrix” trilogy. Friday will see the release of his latest starring role, in another trilogy, “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum.” Laurence Fishburne, who played the role of Reeves’s mentor Mor-

pheus in “The Matrix” and also appears in the upcoming “John Wick” film” called Reeves one of the “smartest and most intelligent men that I have ever met.” “After being in the public eye for so many years, he has somehow managed to maintain more than a little bit of mystery, which is really cool,” Fishburne said at the Hollywood ceremony. “He is a deeply sensitive and thoughtful person, and he is also a courageous and passionate artist.” Reeves’ marks in front of the Chinese Theatre come after he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2005. US orders non-emergency embassy staff to leave Baghdad, Arbil

The US on Wednesday ordered all non-emergency staff to leave its embassy in Baghdad and consulate in Arbil, as tensions mount between the United States and Iraq’s neighbor Iran, prompting Kremlin concern. Washington has ramped up pressure on Tehran in recent days, accusing Iran of planning unspecified “imminent” attacks in the region, and bolstering the American military presence in the Gulf. A State Department advisory announcing the partial embassy closures warned of numerous “terrorist and insurgent groups” active in Iraq, including “anti-US sectarian militias” who could “threaten US citizens and Western companies throughout Iraq.” The US last year shut its consulate in the protest-hit southern Iraqi

city of Basra, blaming “indirect fire” by Iran-backed forces. Tensions have sharply escalated between arch-rivals Washington and Tehran since US President Donald Trump withdrew last May from the 2015 international Iran nuclear deal which removed sanctions in exchange for curbs on Iran’s nuclear program. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo -- who has made rolling back Iranian influence in the region a top priority -- last week paid a surprise trip to Baghdad in a move to bolster ties with Iraq.

He has declined to go into further detail on the alleged plot, which has been met with skepticism in numerous quarters, including from Democratic lawmakers who fear Trump’s administration is seeking to spark a war with Iran. A State Department spokesman on Wednesday told AFP the departure of non-emergency personnel came in response to “the increased threat stream we are seeing in Iraq.” The Pentagon has said its deployments were “in response to indications of heightened Iranian readiness to conduct offensive operations against US forces and our interests”. But Russia, a major backer of Tehran which has blamed the cur-

rent crisis on Washington’s decision to pull out of the Iran nuclear deal, expressed concern Wednesday that tensions keep escalating despite assurances from Pompeo. “So far we notice the continued escalation of tensions around this subject,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, a day after Pompeo met with President Vladimir Putin. “We are saddened to see the decisions taken by the Iranian side,” Peskov said, while arguing that Washington has been provoking Iran. Ruled by Shiite clerics, Iran has a strong influence in Iraq, especially in the country’s Shiitemajority south. Pompeo told reporters he had made his trip because Iranian forces

are “escalating their activity” and said the threat of attacks was “very specific.” The top US envoy met with Iraqi President Barham Saleh and Prime Minister Adel Abdel Mahdi, and spoke to them “about the importance of Iraq ensuring that it’s able to adequately protect Americans in their country.” Diplomatic security is a key priority for the United States.
