Spielberg says ‘BFG’ is closest he’s come to ‘a love story’
CANNES — Steven Spielberg, a giant in the world of cinema, landed at the Cannes Film Festival on Saturday with his gentle Roald Dahl adaptation “The BFG.”

films as well), Spielberg said enchanting fantasies like “The BFG” are just as vital as more realistic tales. “The worse the world gets, the more magic we have to believe in,” said Spielberg. “Hope comes from magic and I think that’s what movies can give people. They can give people hope that there will be a reason to fight on to the next day. Hope is everything to me.” Spielberg acknowledged his interest has recently drifted to historical dramas like “Lincoln” and last year’s “Bridge of Spies,” but he said making “The BFG” was liberating. “It was revisiting something that I’ve always loved to do, which is just to tell stories that are from the imagination,” he said. “It brought back feelings I had as a younger filmmaker.” “The BFG,” which drew warmly respectful reviews in its Cannes premiere, is largely faithful to Dahl’s 1982 classic and was made in concert with the Dahl estate. (The author died in 1990.) Producer Kathleen Kennedy first obtained the rights in 1993 and later turned to Mathison for the script. Spielberg called collaborating with Mathison again “a wonderful reunion and a very bittersweet time, as it turned out, for us.” Dahl was famously anti-Israel and some considered him antiSemitic. (ap)

MOSCOW - Three people were killed and two dozen were wounded in a mass brawl at Moscow’s largest cemetery that witnesses said was sparked by rivalry between ethnic groups battling for control of the burial service business.
About 200 people, some armed with guns and other weapons, took part in the clashes at the vast Khovanskoye cemetery in southwest Moscow and more than 90 people were detained after riot police broke up the brawl, police and witnesses said. Moscow’s city health department said three people were killed and 23 were hospitalised, four of whom were seriously injured. Pictures posted on social media showed young men wielding iron rods, spade shafts and baseball bats as they rushed into the fighting. Reuters witnesses saw a young man’s body lying on the pavement near an overturned car as a forensic expert bent over it. About 10 mainly young men lay handcuffed on the ground while police armed with Kalashnikov rifles looked on. The RIA news agency quoted a cemetery official as saying people from Russia’s North Caucasus regions of Chechnya and Dagestan had attacked migrants from ex-Soviet Uzbekistan and Tajikistan working there, attempting to take over their jobs. With Russia’s economy battered by Western sanctions and low prices for its oil exports, migrants struggle to find work and ethnic criminal groups add to social tensions. Quoting a police source, TASS news agency said ethnic Chechens, Dagestanis, Uzbeks and Tajiks were among those detained. Tajikistan’s Interior Ministry will send to Moscow its top expert in battling organised crime in the former Soviet Union to help investigate the incident, Russian news agencies quoted Russian police spokeswoman Irina Volk as saying. Moscow mayor Sergei Sobyanin said on his Twitter account that none of those responsible would go unpunished.(rtr)

The welcome billboard for Jokowi reads “If SBY Issued Presidential Regulation No. 51/2014, it is time for President Jokowi to revoke it. Do not want to be hit by Batman trap of SBY.” A similar billboard was also installed by customary villagers of Bualu, such as at the three-way intersection of the Bualu toll road and in front of the Nusa Dua entrance gate, Friday night (May 13). Unfortunately, the billboards mounted at the intersection of Bualu toll road was broken down by the authorities ahead of the arrival of the president, Saturday afternoon (May 14). At least two billboards were broken down, respectively measuring 4x6 meters and 3x4 meters. A resident of Bualu, I Nyoman Sueta, said that the billboards of Bualu customary villages were broken down around 13:00 by personnel of the Indonesia Military. Other than the welcome and aspiration billboards on the rejection against the Benoa Bay reclamation plan, the redand-white flag were also withdrawn.

Emmergency steps to prevent violence agaist children
GIANYAR - Given the increasing number of incidents involving violence against children, the situation in Gianyar could be categorised as urgently in need of attention. The government of Gianyar is determined to have the City of Gianyar maintain its status as a child friendly city (KLA). Dutch Holocaust museum exhibits Jeroen Krabbe paintings
AMSTERDAM — More than 70 years after tens of thousands of Dutch Jews were deported and killed by the Nazis, the Netherlands is finally getting a national Holocaust museum. It will be three years before the new museum is completed, but on Monday it opens its doors to host a harrowing exhibition of paintings by actor and artist Jeroen Krabbe. The location of the museum, a former teacher training school in the heart of Amsterdam’s old Jewish quarter, is a small but hugely significant ray of light in the dark history of Jews in the Dutch capital during World War II. Some 600 Jewish children were spirited to safety via the school from a neighboring kindergarten where they were being held while
awaiting deportation, said curator Annemiek Gringold. On the other side of the street stands the Hollandsche Schouwburg, a theater used by the Nazi occupiers as a gathering point for Jews who were rounded up — often with the help of Dutch collaborators paid a bounty for each person they betrayed — and transported to their deaths. In all, 104,000 Dutch Jews were among the 6 million Jews murdered in the Holocaust. The theater is now home to a memorial to those victims. Nearby are also the Jewish Historical Museum and a 17thcentury Portuguese Synagogue. The nine paintings on show Monday are collectively titled “The Demise of Abraham Reiss.” They trace the life of Krabbe’s grandfather, who was murdered by the
Nazis in 1943 in the Sobibor death camp in occupied Poland. From a man sitting in a forest of birch trees on the edge of Amsterdam, the paintings trace Reiss’ life in pre-war Amsterdam to his detention in the Westerbork camp in the northeastern Netherlands and his arrival at Sobibor, where he was greeted by a snarling dog and shadowy, faceless guards. The final painting shows thick smoke billowing out of the chimney of Sobibor’s gas chamber and a flock of geese, whose honking was intended to drown out the screams of Jews being murdered, according to a text accompanying one of the paintings. The artist said he couldn’t bring himself to visit Sobibor. So instead he drew on the memories of camp survivor Jules Schelvis, who wrote
a book about his experiences and built models of the camp and its gas chambers. The models are exhibited in the same room as Krabbe’s paintings. Schelvis, who died last month, survived his time in the camp but lost 18 relatives there, including his wife, Rachel. In 2009, he recalled his Sobibor experiences in the Munich trial of John Demjanjuk, a retired Ohio autoworker who was convicted of 27,900 counts of accessory to murder but always denied serving as a Sobibor guard. Krabbe said he also used his acting skills to imagine how his grandfather would respond to the horrors unfolding in his life. “I wanted to get under his skin,” Krabbe told The Associated Press. “To imagine how it would be to
experience what happened to him and how he would have reacted. It was like I had to play a role.” The holocaust museum will stand among other institutions in the Netherlands charting the history of Jews and their killings during World War II, including Amsterdam’s Anne Frank House. That museum, built around the hidden apartment where the teenage Jewish diarist hid with her family from the Nazis until being betrayed and dying in the Nazis’ Bergen-Belsen camp, attracted more than 1.2 million visitors last year. Gringold said the holocaust museum will shine a light on other victims. “There is one Anne Frank, but 104,000 Dutch Jews died and we have to tell their story, too,” she said. (ap)

A community leader, Nengah Sudana, explained that the Belulang hot springs have existed since long time ago. He acknowledged the road access to the hot spring was badly damaged but by the end of 2014 it has been repaired so that the access to the tourist attraction becomes easy. He added that Belulang hamlet owns many hot springs, but the largest one is located near the Batu Panes Temple, right amid the paddy fields. Sudana continued that the advan-
tage of Belulang hot springs is that it can cure some diseases. “So, other than for refreshing, many travelers make a visit to hot springs for treatment,” he said. On that account, the hot spring attraction is also closely related to a series of spiritual tourism. According to Sudana, some guests wishing to recover from illnesses will say prayers at Batu Panes Temple first. After that, they take a bath in the Belulang hot springs located just 50 meters from the temple. “Many people have recovered. There
are stroke patients coming here to get a healing,” he said. Every day, there are about 100 travelers visiting the hot springs. Although still dominated by domestic travelers, this tourist object is crowded on holidays. The admission ticket is not so expensive. Each domestic visitor is charged at IDR 5,000 and IDR 10,000 for foreign traveler: “Visitors can take shower as long as they want. It is not limited by time,” said Sudana. Aside from shower, the Belulang hot springs also provide two pools for visitors to soak in hot springs. When getting hungry or wishing to get souvenir, visitors can purchase it at the stalls around the hot springs. (kmb24)

Russia says yacht detained by North Korea
Moscow - A Russian yacht has been detained by North Korean coastguards in the Sea of Japan and towed in to land with five crew members on board, Russian officials said Saturday.
During the laying of the first stone, Head of KRJ, Erdi Suradipradja along with other members of his community said that originally the plan was to build bathrooms for the two grandmothers. But after the PNPm conducted a survey, they said that they would build the two elderly women a house with complete facilities, so the building project was cancelled “On Friday ( May 5), as we were purchasing materials for the building project, head of Duaun Tegal Asih informed us that Nengah Wirti and Ketut Risti would be provided with a house with complete facilities from the PNPM after a proposal would be submitted. After confirming with the goverment office of the area, this information was coorrect we decided to build them a kitchen instead of the bathrooms that we had planned to build” said Wirati. This way, he explained, when they tear down their bamboo walled kitchens to build the new house, their will already have their new kitchen ready to use. The two old ladies having been living hand to mouth selling rice crackers ( sengauk) in order to feed themselves and pay for ceremonies. Not having a bathroom, they have had no choice but to use plastic bags that they then throw into the nearby river. “We hope that the “government house building program” can provide them with basic amenities as aoon as possible, because it is a real shame that they don’t even have a bathroom”,explaimed Erdi AKA Doddy. “The North Korean side has communicated that the yacht has been taken to the port of Kimchaek,” Igor Agafonov, a foreign ministry official in Russia’s far-eastern city of Vladivostok told state-run RIA Novosti news agency. “The crew is alive and well. We are still waiting for an explanation from North Korea as to the reasons for the detention,” Agafonov said, adding that diplomats were seeking permission to visit the crew. Earlier an unnamed official at the Russian embassy in Pyongyang told TASS news agency that the sailboat Elfin was detained by North Korean coastguards late Friday with five people on board as it was sailing from a competition in the South Korean port of Busan to Vladivostok. “The embassy... has handed over a note to the North Korean side demanding the immediate release of the crew,” Denis Samsonov, a spokesman for the Russian mission in North Korea, told RIA Novosti. On Friday the vice president of the regional sailing federation Yevgeny Khromchenko wrote on Facebook that the vessel had been stopped by “North Korean fishermen” 85 nautical miles (160 kilometres) from shore and was being towed in to land. Russia shares a short land border with North Korea and enjoys relatively friendly ties with the country’s reclusive Stalinist regime. Russia’s Foreign Affairs Ministry confirmed in a statement that the yacht was sailing from the South Korean port of Busan towards Vladivostok when it was boarded and searched on Friday evening. One of the sokasi producers and sellers, I Nyoman Mudayasa, said on Saturday (May 14) that this business has been deeply involved since ten years ago. It is inseparable from the high interest of the public in purchasing it. Amid the emergence of similar products from other regions, he claimed not to worry about it. “Our sales are still pretty good,” he said. He further mentioned that amid the economy tending to slow down, his products remain
to be demanded by consumers overseas such as Europe and America. Every month, at least a thousand pieces of sokasi can be sent through the art shops in Ubud, Gianyar and Kuta, Badung. In addition, the products have penetrated some transmigration destinations of Balinese people. “The sales of this locally made sokasi have penetrated overseas market. The demand is quite good each month,” he said. Related to the selling price, said Mudayasa, it is varied ranging from IDR 85,000 to IDR 500,000. RIO DE JANEIRO - Brazil’s interim government dismissed criticism by leftist countries in Latin America, including Venezuela, Cuba and Bolivia, over the impeachment process of Dilma Rousseff, who was suspended as president by the senate. The leftist president of El Salvador on Saturday added to the regional pressure on Brazil, saying that he would not recognize the interim government and recalled his ambassador, claiming there had been “political manipulation” in Latin America’s biggest country. The bickering, not rare between leftist leaders and more conservative governments at a time when much of the region is moving to the right, comes as centrist Michel Temer, Rousseff’s vice president, assumes Brazil’s presidency and scrambles to pull the economy out of its worst recession since the 1930s. Rousseff, after five months of impeachment proceedings, now
faces a senate trial over irregularities in her government’s budget. The trial could take up to 180 days and is expected to lead to her definitive ouster. In a statement Friday evening, Brazil’s foreign ministry said it “emphatically rejects” neighbors “allowing themselves to opine and propagate falsehoods over internal political process in Brazil.” In a separate statement, the ministry, headed by José Serra, a prominent former senator and presidential candidate, criticized the head of Unasur, a South American regional bloc. Ernesto Samper, Unasur’s secretary general, earlier had questioned the validity of Rousseff’s suspension. After Brazil’s strongly-worded statements Friday, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, who is also struggling with economic problems and a push to remove him from office, asked his ambassador to Brazil to come home to discuss
the tensions. Maduro is among leaders, including Rousseff herself, who have condemned her suspension as a “coup”. Rousseff, who is spending the weekend with family in the southern Brazilian city of Porto Alegre, has said she could appeal to regional organizations in efforts to discredit the impeachment process. Thus far, however, she has complied with all procedures related to her suspension. On Saturday, mainstream Brazilian media made light of the statements by leftists in the region, especially the Socialist government of Venezuela and Communist-run Cuba. “Who are Cuba, Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia and Nicaragua to teach about democracy?” wrote Eliane Cantanhede, a prominent columnist for the Estado do S. Chinese bullet train in Venezuela stalls as alliance derails
ZARAZA — It was once billed as a model of socialist fraternity: South America’s first high-speed train, powered by Chinese technology, crisscrossing Venezuela to bring development to its backwater plains. Now all but abandoned, it has become a symbol of economic collapse — and a strategic relationship gone adrift. Where dozens of modern buildings once stood, cattle now graze on grass growing amid the rubble of the project’s gutted and vandalized factory. A red arched sign in Chinese and Spanish is all that remains of what until 16 months ago was a bustling complex of 800 workers. That’s when the project’s Chinese managers quietly cleared out. As with many unfinished politically motivated projects dotting Venezuela — government critics call them “red elephants” — the decaying infrastructure contrasts with the railway’s promising beginnings. A decade ago then-President Hugo Chavez dreamed up the TinacoAnaco railway as a way to populate the plains and attract development from long-dominant coastal areas. Stretching 300 miles (468-kilometers), it was intended to move 5 million passengers and 9.8 million metric tons of cargo a year at speeds up to 135 miles (220 kilometers) per hour. Chavez turned to China, one of his closest ideological allies, for engineering and financing for the project, part of a $7.5 billion deal that has made Venezuela the world’s top recipient of Chinese loans. A consortium of staterun companies led by China Railway Group Ltd, the world’s largest train maker, was tasked with carrying out construction. But completion is four years overdue, and work, when it happens at all, has slowed to a crawl. At one barracks facility visited by The Associated Press, half a dozen workers huddled under the shade of a giant cement mixer, while two shirtless managers lounged at a control panel smoking cigarettes. Nowhere are the project’s declining fortunes more visible than in Zaraza, a sweltering crossroads town of 75,000 where what used to be an arena-sized factory churning out concrete railroad ties was located. In government news reels from 2013, the complex can be seen towering over manicured lawns and outdoor basketball courts where Chinese and Venezuelan workers socialized. Shortly after the last Chinese managers left in January 2015, a mob of local residents — some of them armed — ransacked the site and hauled away everything of value. First to go were power generators, computers and air conditioners on the back of pick-up trucks. Vandals then tore apart dozens of buildings to scavenge for metal siding, copper wiring and ceramic tiles, some of which are now on sale at roadside stalls. Jesus Eduardo Rodriguez, who owns and lives on the sprawling ranch where the factory was built, said the plundering lasted two weeks. Several witnesses who declined to be named for fear of reprisals said the looting took place in plain view of National Guard troops, who they allege were on the take and working in collaboration with the town’s pro-government mayor, Wilfredo Balza, which is why the incident never garnered media attention. Balza did not return repeated phone calls and text messages seeking comment and was said to be unavailable when AP journalists visited City Hall.(ap)

Germany to spend $106 billion on refugees
BERLIN — Germany’s federal government expects to spend 93.6 billion euros ($106.2 billion) to support refugees over the next five years, weekly Der Spiegel reported Saturday. The Hamburg-based magazine cited a finance ministry document that predicted the annual costs would rise from about 16.1 billion euros ($18.2 billion) this year to 20.4 billion in 2020. Much of the money would go toward basic benefits, housing support and language lessons for asylum-seekers, but the overall amount also includes spending on efforts to fight the reasons why people flee their home countries and seek refuge in Germany. Finance ministry spokesman Juerg Weissgerber declined to comment on the figures but confirmed that federal officials were in discussion with representatives from Germany’s 16 states about the cost of supporting refugees. They are aiming to reach an agreement on sharing the cost by the time Chan-
cellor Angela Merkel meets state leaders on May 31. Heavy government spending on refugees has boosted Germany’s economy in recent months, but has also stoked resentment among some Germans who believe that migrants are getting preferential treatment. A nationalist party, Alternative for Germany, has surged in recent polls and the number of attacks against refugee shelters has increased sharply over the past year. Almost 1.1 million asylum-seekers entered Germany last year, although the government has stressed that the figure doesn’t account for
those who move on to other countries or return home. The finance ministry document cited by Der Spiegel predicts that 600,000 refugees will come to Germany this year, falling to 400,000 in 2017 and 300,000 in the following years. It assumes that over half of those who are officially recognized as refugees will find work within five years. Thanks to low unemployment and strong exports, Germany recorded a budget surplus of 12.1 billion euros last year on federal spending of 299.3 billion euros. Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble has stuck to his policy of balancing the country’s budget despite the cost of dealing with the influx of migrants. Whoever is elected the new chairman of Golkar Party will be bound by the decisions made during the extraordinary congress, he said. He also said senior cadres of Golkar would no longer sit on the executive board of the party, but will be active in institutions so that they can advise and provide inputs to the younger cadres. ARB expressed the hope that the new chairman would be elected democratically.
The extraordinary congress of Golkar is being held from May 14 to 16 with its main agenda being election of a new chairman of Golkar to succeed ARB, who is resigning. Eight candidates will compete in the election. He explained that the MOUs will cover several fields, including the environment, creative industry, forestry, peat land, trade and oth-
ers. South Korea is the fifth biggest investor in Indonesia, with total investment reaching US$1.2 billion while trade between the two countries peaked at US$30 billion in 2011. President Jokowi is also scheduled to hold business meetings, including a one-on-one meeting and a luncheon round table discussion, with 20 biggest businessmen in South Korea. He will also give a speech at the Asian Leadership Meeting, the biggest discussion forum in South Korea on leadership and innovation. Minister Retno Marsudi earlier informed that South Korea is one of the main partners of Indonesia when it comes to trade, investment and tourism. Indonesia also plans to partner with South Korea to expedite the pace of industrialization in the country, she said. From South Korea, Jokowi will proceed to Sochi, Russia, for ASEAN- Russia Summit. Venezuela opposition slams “desperate” Maduro state of emergency
CARACAS - Venezuela’s opposition on Saturday slammed a state of emergency decreed by President Nicolas Maduro and vowed to press home efforts to remove the leftist leader this year amid a grim economic crisis. Maduro on Friday night declared a 60-day state of emergency due to what he called plots from Venezuela and the United States to subvert him. He did not provide specifics. The measure shows Maduro is panicking as a push for a recall referendum against him gains traction with tired, frustrated Venezuelans, opposition leaders said during a protest in Caracas. “We’re talking about a desperate president who is putting himself on the margin of legality and constitutionality,” said Democratic Unity coalition leader Jesus Torrealba, adding Maduro was losing support within his own bloc. “If this state of emergency is issued without consulting the National Assembly, we would technically be talking about a self-coup,” he told hundreds of supporters who waved

Critics of Maduro, a former union leader and bus driver, say he should instead focus on people’s urgent needs. “There will be a social explosion if Maduro doesn’t let the recall referendum happen,” said protester Marisol Dos Santos, 34, an office worker at a supermarket where she says some 800 people queue up daily. But the opposition fear authorities are trying to delay a referendum until 2017, when the presidency would fall to the vice president, a post currently held by Socialist Party loyalist Aristobulo Isturiz. Islamic State Yemen suicide bomber kills 25 police recruits
ADEN - A suicide bomber killed at least 25 new recruits inside a police compound in the southern Yemeni city of Mukalla on Sunday in an attack claimed by Islamic State, medical and security sources said. The victims were queuing up to register when the bomb, which wounded 25 others, went off, the sources said. It was the second deadly blast in four days to hit the city, a hub for al Qaeda before the militant group was pushed out last month in an offensive by Yemeni troops backed by a Saudi-led coalition. In a message on its online news agency Amaq, Islamic State said Sunday’s attacker was a “martrydom-seeker” who had detonated his explosive belt. It said around 40 died in the attack. The city’s security director, Mubarak al-Awthaban, who was at a nearby office when the suicide bomber struck the Fowa camp in the southern part of Mukalla, survived, security sources said. Before being forced out, al Qaeda militants took advantage of more than a year of war between the Iran-allied Houthis and
supporters of the Saudi-backed President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi to carve out a mini-state stretching across much of the southern coast, including Mukalla. Their militant rivals in Yemen’s branch of Islamic State have carried out a series of suicide attacks on all parties to Yemen’s tangled conflict. The growing Islamist militant threat has led the Houthis and the Yemeni government to embark on peace talks now under way in Kuwait. Saudi Arabia, the UAE and other Arab countries intervened in the war in March 2015 in support of the government, which had been swept into exile by the Houthis. Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) and Islamic State view the Arab coalition as a pawn of the West and see the Shi’ite Muslim Houthis as apostates deserving death. MEXICO CITY — It’s taken less than 80 days for Gianni Infantino’s claim to be leading FIFA into a new era to be publicly undermined. Infantino was plunged into damage limitation mode on Saturday after a significant figure behind the clean-up of FIFA — independent compliance and audit chief Domenico Scala— quit with a stinging rebuke about the president’s conduct. It left Friday’s bold declaration by Infantino that FIFA’s crisis had ended looking like his own premature “Mission Accomplished” moment. It was little wonder Infantino looked so elated when he told delegates “I can officially inform you here, the crisis is over.” That claim came after the previous year’s FIFA Congress was rocked by the arrests of high-ranking executives. Infantino had sprung two unexpected moves on the membership that gave the impression of shoring up his fledgling presidency. While relaxed and preparing to fly home after days of generous hospitality, delegates were potentially blindsided by being asked to approve a change to the statutes that effectively saw Infantino seize control of FIFA’s ethics organs.
Only one member association voted against handing FIFA’s ruling council the power — if needed — to fire Scala, ethics judge HansJoachim Eckert and investigator Cornel Borbely. Despite Eckert and Borbely only discovering the clandestine action when it appeared on congress screens, they do not expect it to impact their work. But Scala believes the council headed by Infantino could now impede investigations with the threat of dismissal hanging over ethics officials. In his resignation statement, Scala said Infantino’s move “undermines a central pillar of the good governance of FIFA, and it destroys a substantial achievement of the reforms.” FIFA dismissed the rebuke as “unfounded.” The independence of the oversight bodies is widely seen as essential for FIFA to reassure external investigators that it can weed out offenders. They helped to ban both FIFA’s president, Sepp Blatter, and the secretary general, Jerome Valcke, in the last six months. Valcke’s replacement as FIFA’s top administrator was another disclosure bounced on the congress. Fatma Samoura initially appeared to be a savvy choice for its secretary general in a job that
had never been previously filled by a woman or non-European. But it quickly became clear that the Senegalese United Nations veteran had not emerged from an open recruitment process and lacks the business background seen as even more essential in the reshaped post, following reforms which Infantino helped to mould last year. Although Samoura seems well qualified to overhaul the development division, Infantino has the experience required to lead on television contracts and sponsorship negotiations after almost a decade as UEFA general secretary. Samoura’s knowledge of the soccer world also came under question when she told French media on Saturday that, when she first met Infantino in November, he was still campaigning for Michel Platini. Platini had in fact been suspended by FIFA the previous month in one of the organization’s most high-profile disciplinary decisions and Infantino was already a presidential candidate. By appointing Samoura for the CEO-like job, Infantino could be better placed to retain some executive functions which were meant to have been stripped from the president to prevent a leader enjoying a power base like Blatter’s. Venezuela opposition slams “desperate” Maduro state of emergency
CARACAS - Venezuela’s opposition on Saturday slammed a state of emergency decreed by President Nicolas Maduro and vowed to press home efforts to remove the leftist leader this year amid a grim economic crisis. Maduro on Friday night declared a 60-day state of emergency due to what he called plots from Venezuela and the United States to subvert him. He did not provide specifics. The measure shows Maduro is panicking as a push for a recall referendum against him gains traction with tired, frustrated Venezuelans, opposition leaders said during a protest in Caracas. “We’re talking about a desperate president who is putting himself on the margin of legality and constitutionality,” said Democratic Unity coalition leader Jesus Torrealba, adding Maduro was losing support within his own bloc. “If this state of emergency is issued without consulting the National Assembly, we would technically be talking about a self-coup,” he told hundreds of supporters who waved

Islamic State Yemen suicide bomber kills 25 police recruits
ADEN - A suicide bomber killed at least 25 new recruits inside a police compound in the southern Yemeni city of Mukalla on Sunday in an attack claimed by Islamic State, medical and security sources said. The victims were queuing up to register when the bomb, which wounded 25 others, went off, the sources said. It was the second deadly blast in four days to hit the city, a hub for al Qaeda before the militant group was pushed out last month in an offensive by Yemeni troops backed by a Saudi-led coalition. In a message on its online news agency Amaq, Islamic State said Sunday’s attacker was a “martrydom-seeker” who had detonated his explosive belt. It said around 40 died in the attack. The city’s security director, Mubarak al-Awthaban, who was at a nearby office when the suicide bomber struck the Fowa camp in the southern part of Mukalla, survived, security sources said. Before being forced out, al Qaeda militants took advantage of more than a year of war between the Iran-allied Houthis and
supporters of the Saudi-backed President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi to carve out a mini-state stretching across much of the southern coast, including Mukalla. Their militant rivals in Yemen’s branch of Islamic State have carried out a series of suicide attacks on all parties to Yemen’s tangled conflict. The growing Islamist militant threat has led the Houthis and the Yemeni government to embark on peace talks now under way in Kuwait. Saudi Arabia, the UAE and other Arab countries intervened in the war in March 2015 in support of the government, which had been swept into exile by the Houthis. ZARAZA — It was once billed as a model of socialist fraternity: South America’s first high-speed train, powered by Chinese technology, crisscrossing Venezuela to bring development to its backwater plains. Now all but abandoned, it has become a symbol of economic collapse — and a strategic relationship gone adrift. Where dozens of modern buildings once stood, cattle now graze on grass growing amid the rubble of the project’s gutted and vandalized factory. A red arched sign in Chinese and Spanish is all that remains of what until 16 months ago was a bustling complex of 800 workers. That’s when the project’s Chinese managers quietly cleared out. As with many unfinished politically motivated projects dotting Venezuela — government critics call them “red elephants” — the decaying infrastructure contrasts with the railway’s promising beginnings. A decade ago then-President Hugo Chavez dreamed up the TinacoAnaco railway as a way to populate the plains and attract development from long-dominant coastal areas. Stretching 300 miles (468-kilometers), it was intended to move 5 million passengers and 9.8 million metric tons of cargo a year at speeds up to 135 miles (220 kilometers) per hour. Chavez turned to China, one of his closest ideological allies, for engineering and financing for the project, part of a $7.5 billion deal that has made Venezuela the world’s top recipient of Chinese loans. A consortium of staterun companies led by China Railway Group Ltd, the world’s largest train maker, was tasked with carrying out construction. But completion is four years overdue, and work, when it happens at all, has slowed to a crawl. At one barracks facility visited by The Associated Press, half a dozen workers huddled under the shade of a giant cement mixer, while two shirtless managers lounged at a control panel smoking cigarettes. Nowhere are the project’s declining fortunes more visible than in Zaraza, a sweltering crossroads town of 75,000 where what used to be an arena-sized factory churning out concrete railroad ties was located. In government news reels from 2013, the complex can be seen towering over manicured lawns and outdoor basketball courts where Chinese and Venezuelan workers socialized. Shortly after the last Chinese managers left in January 2015, a mob of local residents — some of them armed — ransacked the site and hauled away everything of value. First to go were power generators, computers and air conditioners on the back of pick-up trucks. Vandals then tore apart dozens of buildings to scavenge for metal siding, copper wiring and ceramic tiles, some of which are now on sale at roadside stalls. Jesus Eduardo Rodriguez, who owns and lives on the sprawling ranch where the factory was built, said the plundering lasted two weeks. Several witnesses who declined to be named for fear of reprisals said the looting took place in plain view of National Guard troops, who they allege were on the take and working in collaboration with the town’s pro-government mayor, Wilfredo Balza, which is why the incident never garnered media attention. Balza did not return repeated phone calls and text messages seeking comment and was said to be unavailable when AP journalists visited City Hall.(ap)

BERLIN — Germany’s federal government expects to spend 93.6 billion euros ($106.2 billion) to support refugees over the next five years, weekly Der Spiegel reported Saturday. The Hamburg-based magazine cited a finance ministry document that predicted the annual costs would rise from about 16.1 billion euros ($18.2 billion) this year to 20.4 billion in 2020. Much of the money would go toward basic benefits, housing support and language lessons for asylum-seekers, but the overall amount also includes spending on efforts to fight the reasons why people flee their home countries and seek refuge in Germany. Finance ministry spokesman Juerg Weissgerber declined to comment on the figures but confirmed that federal officials were in discussion with representatives from Germany’s 16 states about the cost of supporting refugees. They are aiming to reach an agreement on sharing the cost by the time Chan-
cellor Angela Merkel meets state leaders on May 31. Heavy government spending on refugees has boosted Germany’s economy in recent months, but has also stoked resentment among some Germans who believe that migrants are getting preferential treatment. A nationalist party, Alternative for Germany, has surged in recent polls and the number of attacks against refugee shelters has increased sharply over the past year. Almost 1.1 million asylum-seekers entered Germany last year, although the government has stressed that the figure doesn’t account for
those who move on to other countries or return home. The finance ministry document cited by Der Spiegel predicts that 600,000 refugees will come to Germany this year, falling to 400,000 in 2017 and 300,000 in the following years. It assumes that over half of those who are officially recognized as refugees will find work within five years. Thanks to low unemployment and strong exports, Germany recorded a budget surplus of 12.1 billion euros last year on federal spending of 299.3 billion euros. Russia says yacht detained by North Korea
Moscow - A Russian yacht has been detained by North Korean coastguards in the Sea of Japan and towed in to land with five crew members on board, Russian officials said Saturday.

But after the PNPm conducted a survey, they said that they would build the two elderly women a house with complete facilities, so the building project was cancelled “On Friday ( May 5), as we were purchasing materials for the building project, head of Duaun Tegal Asih informed us that Nengah Wirti and Ketut Risti would be provided with a house with complete facilities from the PNPM after a proposal would be submitted. After confirming with the goverment office of the area, this information was coorrect we decided to build them a kitchen instead of the bathrooms that we had planned to build” said Wirati. This way, he explained, when they tear down their bamboo walled kitchens to build the new house, their will already have their new kitchen ready to use. The two old ladies having been living hand to mouth selling rice crackers ( sengauk) in order to feed themselves and pay for ceremonies. Not having a bathroom, they have had no choice but to use plastic bags that they then throw into the nearby river. “We hope that the “government house building program” can provide them with basic amenities as aoon as possible, because it is a real shame that they don’t even have a bathroom”,explaimed Erdi AKA Doddy. “The North Korean side has communicated that the yacht has been taken to the port of Kimchaek,” Igor Agafonov, a foreign ministry official in Russia’s far-eastern city of Vladivostok told state-run RIA Novosti news agency. “The crew is alive and well. We are still waiting for an explanation from North Korea as to the reasons for the detention,” Agafonov said, adding that diplomats were seeking permission to visit the crew. Earlier an unnamed official at the Russian embassy in Pyongyang told TASS news agency that the sailboat Elfin was detained by North Korean coastguards late Friday with five people on board as it was sailing from a competition in the South Korean port of Busan to Vladivostok. “The embassy... has handed over a note to the North Korean side demanding the immediate release of the crew,” Denis Samsonov, a spokesman for the Russian mission in North Korea, told RIA Novosti. On Friday the vice president of the regional sailing federation Yevgeny Khromchenko wrote on Facebook that the vessel had been stopped by “North Korean fishermen” 85 nautical miles (160 kilometres) from shore and was being towed in to land. Russia shares a short land border with North Korea and enjoys relatively friendly ties with the country’s reclusive Stalinist regime. RIO DE JANEIRO - Brazil’s interim government dismissed criticism by leftist countries in Latin America, including Venezuela, Cuba and Bolivia, over the impeachment process of Dilma Rousseff, who was suspended as president by the senate. The leftist president of El Salvador on Saturday added to the regional pressure on Brazil, saying that he would not recognize the interim government and recalled his ambassador, claiming there had been “political manipulation” in Latin America’s biggest country. The bickering, not rare between leftist leaders and more conservative governments at a time when much of the region is moving to the right, comes as centrist Michel Temer, Rousseff’s vice president, assumes Brazil’s presidency and scrambles to pull the economy out of its worst recession since the 1930s. Rousseff, after five months of impeachment proceedings, now
faces a senate trial over irregularities in her government’s budget. The trial could take up to 180 days and is expected to lead to her definitive ouster. In a statement Friday evening, Brazil’s foreign ministry said it “emphatically rejects” neighbors “allowing themselves to opine and propagate falsehoods over internal political process in Brazil.” In a separate statement, the ministry, headed by José Serra, a prominent former senator and presidential candidate, criticized the head of Unasur, a South American regional bloc. Ernesto Samper, Unasur’s secretary general, earlier had questioned the validity of Rousseff’s suspension. Emmergency steps to prevent violence agaist children
GIANYAR - Given the increasing number of incidents involving violence against children, the situation in Gianyar could be categorised as urgently in need of attention. The government of Gianyar is determined to have the City of Gianyar maintain its status as a child friendly city (KLA). One way is by taking the urgently needed preventative step of issuing heavy penalties fir offenders as was first suggested by the president some time ago. “Given the increased number of casea of violence against children, we need.to take seriouse steps towards so that there not. be any more cases of physical, sexual or psychological.violence against children”, said Regional Secretary of Gianyar, I.B Gaga Adi Saputra on Friday (May 13). Through the involvement, caring and empathy of all parties, every child in Indonesia can be safe and secure wherever they may be. “ Creating a safe and secure environment obviously requires the participation of everyone; families schools and the greater community in ensuring that children’ s rights are respected. Dutch Holocaust museum exhibits Jeroen Krabbe paintings
AMSTERDAM — More than 70 years after tens of thousands of Dutch Jews were deported and killed by the Nazis, the Netherlands is finally getting a national Holocaust museum. It will be three years before the new museum is completed, but on Monday it opens its doors to host a harrowing exhibition of paintings by actor and artist Jeroen Krabbe. The location of the museum, a former teacher training school in the heart of Amsterdam’s old Jewish quarter, is a small but hugely significant ray of light in the dark history of Jews in the Dutch capital during World War II. Some 600 Jewish children were spirited to safety via the school from a neighboring kindergarten where they were being held while
awaiting deportation, said curator Annemiek Gringold. On the other side of the street stands the Hollandsche Schouwburg, a theater used by the Nazi occupiers as a gathering point for Jews who were rounded up — often with the help of Dutch collaborators paid a bounty for each person they betrayed — and transported to their deaths. In all, 104,000 Dutch Jews were among the 6 million Jews murdered in the Holocaust. The theater is now home to a memorial to those victims. Nearby are also the Jewish Historical Museum and a 17thcentury Portuguese Synagogue. The nine paintings on show Monday are collectively titled “The Demise of Abraham Reiss.” They trace the life of Krabbe’s grandfather, who was murdered by the
Nazis in 1943 in the Sobibor death camp in occupied Poland. From a man sitting in a forest of birch trees on the edge of Amsterdam, the paintings trace Reiss’ life in pre-war Amsterdam to his detention in the Westerbork camp in the northeastern Netherlands and his arrival at Sobibor, where he was greeted by a snarling dog and shadowy, faceless guards. The final painting shows thick smoke billowing out of the chimney of Sobibor’s gas chamber and a flock of geese, whose honking was intended to drown out the screams of Jews being murdered, according to a text accompanying one of the paintings. The artist said he couldn’t bring himself to visit Sobibor. So instead he drew on the memories of camp survivor Jules Schelvis, who wrote
a book about his experiences and built models of the camp and its gas chambers. The models are exhibited in the same room as Krabbe’s paintings. Schelvis, who died last month, survived his time in the camp but lost 18 relatives there, including his wife, Rachel. In 2009, he recalled his Sobibor experiences in the Munich trial of John Demjanjuk, a retired Ohio autoworker who was convicted of 27,900 counts of accessory to murder but always denied serving as a Sobibor guard. Krabbe said he also used his acting skills to imagine how his grandfather would respond to the horrors unfolding in his life. “I wanted to get under his skin,” Krabbe told The Associated Press. “To imagine how it would be to
experience what happened to him and how he would have reacted. It was like I had to play a role.” The holocaust museum will stand among other institutions in the Netherlands charting the history of Jews and their killings during World War II, including Amsterdam’s Anne Frank House. That museum, built around the hidden apartment where the teenage Jewish diarist hid with her family from the Nazis until being betrayed and dying in the Nazis’ Bergen-Belsen camp, attracted more than 1.2 million visitors last year. Gringold said the holocaust museum will shine a light on other victims. “There is one Anne Frank, but 104,000 Dutch Jews died and we have to tell their story, too,” she said. (ap)

A community leader, Nengah Sudana, explained that the Belulang hot springs have existed since long time ago. He acknowledged the road access to the hot spring was badly damaged but by the end of 2014 it has been repaired so that the access to the tourist attraction becomes easy. He added that Belulang hamlet owns many hot springs, but the largest one is located near the Batu Panes Temple, right amid the paddy fields. Sudana continued that the advan-
tage of Belulang hot springs is that it can cure some diseases. “So, other than for refreshing, many travelers make a visit to hot springs for treatment,” he said. On that account, the hot spring attraction is also closely related to a series of spiritual tourism. According to Sudana, some guests wishing to recover from illnesses will say prayers at Batu Panes Temple first. After that, they take a bath in the Belulang hot springs located just 50 meters from the temple. “Many people have recovered. There
are stroke patients coming here to get a healing,” he said. Every day, there are about 100 travelers visiting the hot springs. Although still dominated by domestic travelers, this tourist object is crowded on holidays. The admission ticket is not so expensive. Each domestic visitor is charged at IDR 5,000 and IDR 10,000 for foreign traveler: “Visitors can take shower as long as they want. It is not limited by time,” said Sudana. Aside from shower, the Belulang hot springs also provide two pools for visitors to soak in hot springs. When getting hungry or wishing to get souvenir, visitors can purchase it at the stalls around the hot springs. (kmb24)

The welcome billboard for Jokowi reads “If SBY Issued Presidential Regulation No. 51/2014, it is time for President Jokowi to revoke it. Do not want to be hit by Batman trap of SBY.” A similar billboard was also installed by customary villagers of Bualu, such as at the three-way intersection of the Bualu toll road and in front of the Nusa Dua entrance gate, Friday night (May 13). Unfortunately, the billboards mounted at the intersection of Bualu toll road was broken down by the authorities ahead of the arrival of the president, Saturday afternoon (May 14). At least two billboards were broken down, respectively measuring 4x6 meters and 3x4 meters. A resident of Bualu, I Nyoman Sueta, said that the billboards of Bualu customary villages were broken down around 13:00 by personnel of the Indonesia Military. Other than the welcome and aspiration billboards on the rejection against the Benoa Bay reclamation plan, the redand-white flag were also withdrawn.

According to Sueta, the re-installed billboards are now guarded by local residents and so are the billboards remaining to stand. Spielberg says ‘BFG’ is closest he’s come to ‘a love story’

films as well), Spielberg said enchanting fantasies like “The BFG” are just as vital as more realistic tales. “The worse the world gets, the more magic we have to believe in,” said Spielberg. “Hope comes from magic and I think that’s what movies can give people. They can give people hope that there will be a reason to fight on to the next day. Hope is everything to me.” Spielberg acknowledged his interest has recently drifted to historical dramas like “Lincoln” and last year’s “Bridge of Spies,” but he said making “The BFG” was liberating. “It was revisiting something that I’ve always loved to do, which is just to tell stories that are from the imagination,” he said. “It brought back feelings I had as a younger filmmaker.” “The BFG,” which drew warmly respectful reviews in its Cannes premiere, is largely faithful to Dahl’s 1982 classic and was made in concert with the Dahl estate. (The author died in 1990.) Producer Kathleen Kennedy first obtained the rights in 1993 and later turned to Mathison for the script. Spielberg called collaborating with Mathison again “a wonderful reunion and a very bittersweet time, as it turned out, for us.” Dahl was famously anti-Israel and some considered him antiSemitic. (ap)

Three killed as ethnic rivalries fuel brawl at Moscow cemetery
MOSCOW - Three people were killed and two dozen were wounded in a mass brawl at Moscow’s largest cemetery that witnesses said was sparked by rivalry between ethnic groups battling for control of the burial service business.
About 200 people, some armed with guns and other weapons, took part in the clashes at the vast Khovanskoye cemetery in southwest Moscow and more than 90 people were detained after riot police broke up the brawl, police and witnesses said. Moscow’s city health department said three people were killed and 23 were hospitalised, four of whom were seriously injured. Pictures posted on social media showed young men wielding iron rods, spade shafts and baseball bats as they rushed into the fighting. Reuters witnesses saw a young man’s body lying on the pavement near an overturned car as a forensic expert bent over it. About 10 mainly young men lay handcuffed on the ground while police armed with Kalashnikov rifles looked on. The RIA news agency quoted a cemetery official as saying people from Russia’s North Caucasus regions of Chechnya and Dagestan had attacked migrants from ex-Soviet Uzbekistan and Tajikistan working there, attempting to take over their jobs. With Russia’s economy battered by Western sanctions and low prices for its oil exports, migrants struggle to find work and ethnic criminal groups add to social tensions. Quoting a police source, TASS news agency said ethnic Chechens, Dagestanis, Uzbeks and Tajiks were among those detained. Tajikistan’s Interior Ministry will send to Moscow its top expert in battling organised crime in the former Soviet Union to help investigate the incident, Russian news agencies quoted Russian police spokeswoman Irina Volk as saying.
