China Film takes 1st stake in Hollywood movies Associated Press Writer HONG KONG — China’s state-owned film distributor is making its first investment in Hollywood movies by taking a stake in two Legendary Entertainment productions. China Film Co. will make an “eightfigure equity investment” in two upcoming films, “Seventh Son” and “Warcraft,” the Chinese unit of Legendary Entertainment said Tuesday. The exact amount of the U.S. dollar investment was not specified. “Seventh Son” is a fantasy adventure starring Jeff Bridges and Julianne Moore that’s scheduled for release on Feb. 6, 2015. “Warcraft,” based on a popular video game series, is slated for release March 11, 2016. If approved for release in China, China Film would distribute the movies under current rules and regulations for foreign films, which are limited to just 34 a year. The deal calls for China Film to be credited on the movies. China Film, which is planning to go

public, owns stakes in movie theater chains that make up half of the country’s box office receipts. Its parent, China Film Group, is the gatekeeper for foreign studios because it controls film imports and co-productions. The projects are the first since Legendary and China Film teamed up about a year ago to produce global blockbusters. It’s one of a number of recent tie-ups between companies in the world’s two biggest movies markets. As box-office revenue growth flattens out at home, Hollywood studies are keen to move into China, now the world’s second biggest movie market with $3.6 billion in ticket sales last year. China’s leaders hope that entertainment companies can benefit from the joint ventures by acquiring know-how to develop their own cultural industries in order to expand influence abroad. Legendary Entertainment’s films include “The Dark Knight” and “Hangover” trilogies and last year’s sci-fi action adventure “Pacific Rim.”

Donna Tartt wins fiction Pulitzer for ‘Goldfinch’ Associated Press Writer

NEW YORK — Donna Tartt’s “The Goldfinch,” already among the most popular and celebrated novels of the past year, has won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction. One of the country’s top colonial historians, Alan Taylor, has won his second Pulitzer, for “The Internal Enemy: Slavery and War In Virginia.” Annie Baker’s “The Flick” won the Pulitzer for drama, a play set in a movie theater that was called a “thoughtful drama with well-crafted characters” which created “lives rarely seen on the stage.” The award Monday for general nonfiction went to Dan Fagin’s “Toms River: A Story of Science and Salvation,” a chronicle of industrial destruction in a small New Jersey community that was

praised by The New York Times as a “classic of science reporting.” Megan Marshall’s “Margaret Fuller: A New American Life,” about the 19th century intellectual and transcendentalist, won

for biography; and Vijay Seshadri’s witty and philosophical “3 Sections” received the poetry prize. The Pulitzer for music was given to John Luther Adams’ “Become Ocean,” which judges cited as “a haunting orchestral work that suggests a relentless tidal surge, evoking thoughts of melting polar ice and rising sea levels.” Tartt’s novel, a sweeping, Dickensian tale about a young orphan set in modern Manhattan, was published last fall to high praise and quick commercial success that has not relented. “The Goldfinch” has been nominated for a National Book Critics Circle prize and an Andrew Carnegie Medal and on Monday was in the top 40 on Amazon.com’s best seller list even before the Pulitzer was announced. Fans of the 50-year-old Mississippi native, many of whom still had strong memories of her 1992 debut, “The Secret History,” had waited a decade for her to complete her third novel. “The Goldfinch” was published after the disappointing “The Little Friend.” The Pulitzer will likely ensure her place among the elite of contemporary fiction writers and make “The Goldfinch” a million seller.

Peak of “IBTK” ritual at Besakih

Prayers opened for 21 days Bali Post

AMLAPURA - The peak of Ida Bhatara Turun Kabeh (IBTK) ritual in the Penataran Agung Temple, Besakih, Karangasem, on Monday (Apr 14) was officiated over by six high priests of various clans as well as attended by Ida Dalem Klungkung as public figure namely Ida Dalem Semaraputra. Meanwhile, after the culmination of the ritual on Monday, one of the local priests, I Gusti Mangku Jana, said the deity would be available for the worship of pilgrims for 21 days, until May 5. At the culmination of the ritual last Monday, at least 600 pilgrims worshipped in turn until afternoon. Chairman of the Ritual Committee, I Wayan Gunatra, said that a total of six buffaloes were used as

caru or sacrificial animal, where three of them were buffaloes with special fur called the buda cemeng, anggrek bulan and yos berana. The buffalo represented the sacrifice of animal, while the plants were

represented by tubers and fruits as complement of the oblation. The sacrificial animal of buffalo was presented under the padma bhuvana shrine as titi mamah, while the others were presented under the ambal-

ambal and behind the eleven-tiered meru shrine. Other than the high priest officiating over in the elephant pavilion, two other high priests also officiated over in the peselang pavilion. The strain of pajejiwan denoted an expression of people’s gratitude to God for the grace bestowed. Aside from the pooja of high priests, procession of the ritual peak was also simultaneously accompanied with the sounds of holy bells mutually shouting so it increased

the sacredness of the pilgrims to worship solemnly. The procession was also accompanied by a sacred dance, such as the Rejang Dewa, Baris Dance, Sidakarya Mask and puppet. Meanwhile, the Ida Bhatara Turun Kabeh ritual also took place in a number of temples such as in the Pasar Agung Sebudi Temple at Selat. Then, the temple anniversary was also organized in several temples, including in the Segara Temple at Batu Dawa village, Tulamben. (013)
