Ice Cube gets Hollywood star, thanks all “who helped me get here”

LOS ANGELES - Rapper-turned-actor Ice Cube received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Monday and thanked everyone who helped his career in music and movies.

Friends and family attended the ceremony on Hollywood Boulevard, including Dr. Dre, a former fellow member of the seminal “gangsta” rap group N.W.A. “You know, you don’t get here by yourself and when you’re coming up doing music, movies, just trying to be creative, you never figure you’ll be on the Hollywood Walk of Fame one day,” Ice Cube said.

“So today is not really about Ice Cube, it’s about all the people who helped me get here,” he added.

Ice Cube, born as O’Shea Jackson, found fame in the 1980s alongside Dr. Dre in the influential West Coast rap group N.W.A., writing many of the song lyrics for their iconic “Straight Outta Compton” album.

After leaving the group over a royalty dispute, he released his debut solo album “AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted” in 1990.

The rapper began acting in movies in 1991 with a starring role in John Singleton’s film about life in a Los Angeles ghetto, “Boyz n the Hood.” He has since appeared in the films “Friday”, “Barbershop”, and “Three Kings.”

Ice Cube was also a producer on the 2015 biopic “Straight Outta Compton”, which told the story of N.W.A. His son O’Shea Jackson Jr. portrayed him in the film. (rtr)

LONDON- Fire engulfed a 24-storey housing block in central London in the early hours on Wednesday, killing at least six people and injuring 70 others in an inferno that trapped residents as they slept. Flames raced through the high-rise Grenfell Tower block of apartments in the north Kensington area after taking hold around 1 a.m. and witnesses reported some residents screaming for help from windows of upper floors and others trying to throw children to safety.

More than 200 firefighters, backed up by 40 fire engines, fought for hours to try to bring the blaze, one of the biggest seen in central London in memory, under control.

By mid-day, London police said six people had been killed and they cautioned the death toll was likely to rise. Police Commander Stuart Cundy said a “recovery operation” could take some time and there could be people in the building who are unaccounted for, though he would not be drawn on a figure.

Fire-fighting crews still had to reach the top four floors of the building where several hundred people

live in 130 apartments. The cause of the fire, which left the tower block a charred, smoking shell, was not immediately known. The block had recently undergone an 8.7 million pound ($11.08 million) refurbishment of the exterior, which included new external cladding, replacement windows and curtain wall facades.

Plumes of black smoke billowed high into the air over the British capital for hours after the blaze broke out. Residents rushed to escape through smoke-filled corridors after being woken up by the smell of burning. London Fire Brigade said the fire engulfed all

floors from the second to the top of the 24-storey block. There were reports that some residents leapt out of windows to escape the flames.

One woman lost two of her six children as she tried to escape from the block, one witness said.

Research at Wasan site continues Chief of the Agency for Cultural Heritage Preservation of Bali, NTB and NTT, I Gusti Made Suarbawa, explained that the team has been investigating the site since Saturday (Jun 10) and will continue to do so for 14 days -until Friday (Jun 23). “Researchers are working on the site with the aim of finding the supporting buildings of Wasan Temple” said Suarbawa when met at the wantilan hall of the Puseh Wasan Temple on Tuesday (Jun 13).

Suarbawa said this research is picking up from the findings of 2016 when stone building structures were found. He added that the first two days of investigation have so far not revealed the types of buildings that support the Wasan temple site. “We are still excavating, but haven’t found anything conclusive yet”, he said Base in the type of soil texture, Suarbawa theories that the buildings were buried following flash floods.

The type of floating soil also indicates the the area had been covered in volcanic ash from the eruption of Mount Rinjani in Lombok in the past, According to Suarbawa, based on the statues found at the site that include a four-faced Brahma statue, Goddess statues and a Nandhi statues with pedestal embellished with skulls, it is estimated that the the Wasan temple complex dates from the thirteenth or fourteenth century Other finds at the temple site include a Ganesha statue, linga-yoni, statues of human figures and of animals.

Discoveries made at the Wasan temple site are inseparable from the role of a Dutch researcher named JC Krishman, who first visited the Wasan site in 1950 and found mounds and a number of statues scattered about.

The local community of temple devotees established a sanctum at the site with a small building. A few years later, the Denpasar Archaeological Institute investi-

gated the site and found a number of relic statues that dated from the fourteenth century. “Actually this was by accident. In 1986, the Archeological Institute was doing research at Cangi but local residents requested that they check out the Wasan site” he explained.

Excavation of the site was started in 2006 and went on until 2016 yielding archeological remains including a stone temple with a pond that was restored by the Agency for Cultural Heritage Preservation of Bali, NTB and NTT in 2009. The desire to know more continued with the suspicion that there was another building that had yet to be revealed. Further excavations were from 2011 until 2017.

Priest of the Puseh Wasan temple, Jro Mangku Wayan Lasia Siaja, explained that previously the area was completely overgrown but now it is totally transformed. “ There used to be four banyan trees here” he added.

Now, that the relics have been revealed, he said that he very much supports the excavations that allow people to know about the history of the Wasan site. Is quite unique in that it is only supported by ten families from three different hamlets. Five of the families are from Blahtanah hamlet, Batuan Kaler, one family from Tangkeban hamlet, Batubulan Kangin and four other families from Kenanga hamlet, Batubulan Kangin.

The temple is strategically located near DenpasarGilimanuk Road, making it easily accessible to tourists, said Jro Mangku Wayan Lasia Siaja. IN fact a number of foreign tourists have visited the site. “There have been guests from the Netherlands and France who visited. They got information on the internet and come here for spiritual purposes. Tourists often complain that they have trouble finding the site’, he said.

Following such complaints, Jro Mangku asked the Gianyar Agency for Cultural Preservation ( PBCB) to have a signboard put up to make the site easier to find, but until now this has not been realized, he said.

“Around the year 2000, tourists frequently came here, some even stayed here meditating all night. But after that tourists rarely came to visit, I suspect it is because the site is hard for them to find”, he concluded. (kmb35)

Job fair faces obstacle as opportunities and applications are not matching up SINGARAJA - A job fair in the district if Buleleng opened on Tuesday (Jun 13) at the former harbor of Buleleng. The event that will run until June 15th is being held as a way to reduce the rate of unemployment in this district.

However, as with previous years, this annual event is having trouble matching the desires of applicants with available positions.

Head of the Buleleng Manpower Agency, Made Dwi Priyanti, explained that the job fair involves 20 companies of various types in Buleleng who offer 6,604 job opportunities. “There are thousands of jobs available” she said. The goal of this annual job fair is to help organize manpower placement with the government, the private and the public sector so as to help reduce the relatively high unemployment rate by having job seekers matched with jobs. “Of coure we want to see unemployment rates go down also help businesses fulfil their need for qualified personnel” she explained.

Unfortunately there seems to still be a discrepancy between the types of jobs that the unemployed are looking for and the types of jobs being offered. “ For example,

a company or institution may be looking for a graduated accountant but none of the job seekers have such a diploma” said Priyanti.

In response to this ongoing discrepancy, this bureaucrat from Banyuatis village, Banjar, explained that the government of Buleleng has been continuously encouraging job seekers to gain skills required to fill the job vacancies. “We have directed people to take 6- month vocational training in things like foreign language proficiency. We aim to have a 75% of job seekers placed in suitable positions” she said.

Regent of Buleleng, Putu Agus Suradnyana, explained that Buleleng’S potential workforce is growing every year and that many people are interested in working in tourism. However tourism in Buelleng is not as developed as it is in South Bali, so it is not realistic for everyone to expect to work in this sector. The district government is nonetheless continuing to to improve accessibility “With good access, the tourism sector can grow here and thus have a positive impact on the workforce” he concluded. Prenatal fever linked to autism risk

NEW YORK - Children born to mothers who experienced fever, especially multiple fevers, during the second trimester of pregnancy are at increased risk for developing autism spectrum disorder (ASD), a new study suggests.

Researchers found that mothers who experienced a fever over 99 degrees F (37.22 C) during the second trimester of pregnancy had a 40 percent increased risk of having a child with ASD compared to women who had no fevers.

But none of the women who used ibuprofen to treat a fever during pregnancy gave birth to children later diagnosed with autism, the researchers note.

“What is particularly important about our findings is that it not only strengthens the evidence for a particular pathway for ASD, but it also suggests that we may be very close to understanding how to safely mitigate or prevent some outcomes by directing prevention or intervention strategies toward this pathway,” said lead author Dr. Mady Hornig of Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health in New York.

An increased risk of ASD among women with prenatal fevers has been reported before, the authors write in the journal Molecular Psychiatry. What’s new about this study is that it is the first large, prospective investigation showing a so-called dose-response effect.

The chances of ASD rose with the number of maternal fevers, increasing by more than 300 percent if a mother had three or more fevers after the first trimester.

Since fever is caused by acute inflammation, the profound difference in risk of ASD is consistent with the idea that a longer exposure of the fetus to an inflammatory environment in the womb can cause a greater disruption of brain development, said Hornig. A crosstalk of immune molecules called cytokines can reach the fetus across the placenta to affect the developing brain.

The findings also provide clues to suggest women are using the wrong drug during pregnancy to bring down fever, according to Hornig. While none of the mothers who took the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) ibuprofen to treat fever during the second trimester had a child who developed ASD, mothers who took acetaminophen during this time made very little difference in their child’s fever-related risk for ASD. The study analyzed data on 95,754 women participating in the Norwegian Mother and Child Cohort Study, which is following pregnant Norwegian women and their children born between 1999 and 2009.

Among its limitations is that small numbers of women used ibuprofen during pregnancy so researchers can’t be confident that ibuprofen had mitigating effects.

In addition, the study did not address the causes of fever, such as microbial infections. “An ongoing study is testing blood samples collected at mid-pregnancy and at birth to explore the possible role of specific infectious agents and the contribution of distinctive patterns of immune response among mothers and children to understand the mechanisms creating vulnerability,” the researchers note in a statement.

“We remain to admire imported fruits because of its appearance.

Actually, imported fruits is not necessarily good for health,” said this lecturer at the Faculty of Agriculture, Udayana University.

Guava contains vitamin C four times higher than oranges. In the meantime, the developing understanding in the community is when people need vitamin C, they will consume oranges. Guava is less favored by the community because of its abundant seeds so that it is not convenient for consumption. In addition, people consider less prestigious to use local fruits. “Perhaps, it is less desirable because of its appearance,” she added.

Besides, the harvest of local fruits is not timely. Generally, farmers want to get results immediately. So, when unripe fruits have been harvested, it will not taste maximally.

She saw that guava in particular is rarely sold on a commercial scale. Currently, guava farms have been available in Plaga, Bedugul and Mendoyo. Australian tourist goes through broken leg when surfing

Turkish president says Qatar isolation violates Islamic values

GIANYAR — An Australian tourist, John, experienced a disaster when surfing on Cucukan Beach, Medahaan village, Blahbatuh, on Tuesday (Jun 13). This 40-year-old man from Melbourne had broken bone of leg due to the disaster.

The Gianyar disaster mitigation agency (BPBD) immediately came down to location in order to provide relief. As information collected, the weather and wave conditions on Cucukan Beach, Medahan, Blahbatuh, was less friendly from the morning. However, John who came to the location forced himself to keep on surfing with a number of friends.

Well, when getting absorbed in surfing, the victim was alleged to fall and his feet hit coral reef. Fortunately, John is still able to swim to the beach and he shouted for help. Local people seeing the incident immediately carried the victim to the beach.

Lifesaver officers on duty at the location also directly contacted a vehicle to deliver the victim to BMC Hospital Kuta. Until Tuesday evening, the victim was still undergoing medical treatment. “On the request of the victim, he was immediately rushed to BMC Kuta, Badung,” said the Head of the BPBD Gianyar, A.A. Oka Digjaya.

When asked about the bad weather condition in Gianyar lately, this man from Sukawati said that in the face of the threat of disaster due to bad weather, the BPBD Gianyar is on duty for 24 hours to anticipate unfavorable things such fallen trees, landslides, floods and other disasters.

The 369 extra flights include Citilink with 100 flights, Garuda Indonesia (12 flights), Nam Air (60 flights), Sriwijaya Air (40 flights), Wings Air (52 flights) and Lion Air (105 flights).

Arie said that until now his section has not been able to ensure the tendency whether the number of passengers on this year’s Lebaran holiday will increase or decrease. He added the increase

and decrease trend of passengers will be known at the opening of Lebaran desk.

However, Arie estimated the peak of homecoming traffic can occur on day two and day one before Lebaran because the last working day is on Friday while Lebaran falls on Sunday. In the meantime, the peak of backflow is estimated to occur on day six and day seven after Lebaran.

Lawless waters test SE Asian nations in fight against Islamic State

SINGAPORE - Militants, pirates, drug traffickers, gun runners - the waters between Borneo and the southern Philippines have them all, but as an Islamic State faction burst on the scene in recent weeks, this corner of Southeast Asia plumbed new levels of insecurity.

The mostly Muslim countries of Indonesia and Malaysia, and those with sizeable Muslim minorities, like the Philippines, have been on high alert for fighters returning home from Islamic State frontlines in Syria and Iraq.

So when dozens of Malaysians, Indonesians, Arabs and Chechens showed up in Marawi City on Mindanao island, fighting alongside a Philippine franchise of Islamic State, a nightmare scenario suddenly took shape.

The danger of global jihadis establishing a base in the Philippines, running satellite cells to launch attacks across Southeast Asia, made governments in the region realise just how vulnerable they could be.

“It’s easy to jump from Marawi to Indonesia and we must all beware of sleeper cells being activated in Indonesia,” General Gatot Nurmantyo, Indonesia’s military chief said on Monday.

According to the general, there are Islamic State sleeper cells in almost all of Indonesia’s 34 provinces.

Indonesia has called for a conference with the Philippines and Malaysia to discuss events in Marawi - where the Philippine military, backed by U.S. special forces are still battling after more than three weeks to retake the town from fighters led by the IS-inspired Maute brothers.

So far, Islamic State-inspired attacks have been relatively smallscale in Indonesia, the country with the world’s largest Muslim population. But they have become more frequent. Last month, suicide bombers killed three police officers at a Jakarta bus station.

Malaysia, meanwhile, has used draconian security laws to detain scores of suspected militants and Islamic State sympathisers.

AIR AND SEA Next week, the three countries, with Singapore’s assistance, will begin joint air surveillance over the Sulu Sea, using reconnaissance planes and drones, and enhance joint naval patrols.

Their navies planned joint patrols last year after a spate of

kidnappings by Abu Sayyaf, a well established militant group that has declared support for Islamic State.

But there are plenty of gaps to fill.

“We don’t have communications via radio at this point. We conduct patrols in our own territory. We have not discussed exchanging personnel,” said First Admiral Ferial Fachroni, commander of Indonesia’s Tarakan naval base in North Kalimantan.

He told Reuters joint operations would begin this month. Situated on Borneo’s northeast coast, Tarakan is the nearest Indonesian naval base to kidnappers’ hunting grounds in the Celebes and Sulu Seas.

Keeping tabs on hundreds of merchant ships, fishing boats and ferries plying routes between the islands, deciding when and who to stop and search will be a tall order even for three navies working together.

The archipelagos’ heavily forested coves and inlets provide excellent cover for any fast vessel looking to escape closer scrutiny.

“The Sulu Sea area has always had sporadic incidents like kidnappings of tourists before, but starting last year and this year, it has really gone up,” Noel Chung, the Kuala Lumpur-based Asia head of the International Maritime Bureau, said. (rtr)

ANKARA - Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday denounced the isolation of Qatar by neighbouring states as a violation of Islamic values and akin to a “death penalty” imposed in a crisis that has reverberated across the Middle East and beyond.

Erdogan’s comments marked the strongest intervention yet by a powerful regional ally of Doha eight days after Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt cut ties with Qatar and applied stringent economic sanctions on it.

Later on Tuesday, the UAE ambassador to the United States, which has an air base in Qatar, said there was no military component to the steps taken against Doha.

Qatar denies accusations that it supports Islamist militants and Shi’ite Iran, arch regional foe of the Sunni Gulf Arab monarchies.

“A very grave mistake is being made in Qatar; isolating a nation in all areas is inhumane and against Islamic values. It’s as if a death penalty decision has been taken for Qatar,” Erdogan told members of his ruling AK Party in Ankara.

“Qatar has shown the most decisive stance against the terrorist organisation Islamic State alongside Turkey. Victimising Qatar through smear campaigns serves no purpose.”

The measures against Qatar, a small oil and gas exporter with a population of 2.7 million people, have disrupted imports of food and other materials and caused some foreign banks to scale back business.

The UAE envoy, Yousef Al Otaiba, told reporters in Washington: “There is absolutely no military

component to anything that we are doing.”

“I have spoken and seen (U.S. Defense Secretary) General (Jim) Mattis four times in the last week; we’ve given them our complete assurance that the steps we have taken will not affect in anyway Al Udeid base or any operations supporting or regarding the base,” Otaiba said.

Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar is home to more than 11,000 U.S. and coalition forces and an important base for the fight against Islamic State militants in the region.

The chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, Joseph Dunford, told a Senate hearing that the rift between Qatar and its neighbours was not affecting U.S. military operations.

Qatar, which imported 80 percent of its food from bigger Gulf Arab neighbours before the diplomatic shutdown, has been talking to Iran and Turkey to secure food and water.

The world’s second largest helium producer, Qatar has also shut its two helium production plants because of the economic boycott, industry sources told Reuters on Tuesday.

Turkey has maintained good relations with Qatar as well as several of its Gulf Arab neighbours. Turkey and Qatar have both provided support for the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt and backed rebels fighting to overthrow Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi also criticised the measures imposed on Qatar, saying in Baghdad on Tuesday they were hurting the emirate’s people, not its rulers. (rtr)

BUSINESS China insurance mogul said unable to work, reported detained

BEIJING — The Chinese insurer that owns New York City’s Waldorf Astoria Hotel said Wednesday its chairman has turned over his duties to other executives following a report he was detained by regulators amid accusations of possible financial misconduct. Anbang Insurance Group Ltd. Chairman Wu Xiaohui was “temporarily unable to perform his duties due to personal reasons,” said a one-sentence statement on the company website. It said Wu had authorized other executives to do his work and gave no other details.

On Monday, the magazine Caijing reported that Wu, who founded Anbang in 2004 and built it into one of China’s biggest insurers, was detained last week by insurance regulators. Citing unidentified sources, it said authorities told the company about the detention but gave no reason. Spokespeople for Anbang did not respond to phone calls or emails. The China Insurance Regulatory Commission did not respond to questions sent by fax.

Anbang has been under scrutiny since a multibillion-dollar global string of asset purchases, including buying the Waldorf for $2 billion, raised questions about how it was paying for its buying spree. The privately held company said the money was raised from shareholders. It denied a report by another magazine, Caixin, in April that Anbang improperly used payments from policyholders to increase its capital base.

More recently, the company has

suffered setbacks including failing to complete several foreign takeovers. That included the proposed purchase of U.S.-based Fidelity & Guaranty Life for $1.6 billion. In May, Anbang was ordered to stop selling two financial products that regulators said violated industry rules.

Other Chinese insurers also have been investigated following complaints of reckless speculation in stocks and real estate. The chairman of the Chinese insurance regulator is under investigation by the national anti-corruption agency.

Regulators say reducing financial risks in the Chinese economy is a priority this year. Rising Chinese debt levels have prompted concern about the stability of the country’s financial system.

Anbang has a reputation for unusually aggressive expansion in a Chinese insurance industry dominated by state-owned companies.

Jelekungkang waterfalls is being made into a tourist attraction and the local community is stepping up to the task by arranging the area around these waterfalls located in Tammanbali, Bangli. Ketut Purna who has been instrumental in this process, said that as of a week ago a path to the waterfalls has been opened.

He explained that local residents have been bathing at these waterfalls for a very long time but that acces was not easy until recently. Since the road and path have been opened, children have been coming the waterfall in droves. “Now, almost every day, children from our village come here to bathe. Sometimes, they also help us cleanup the area”, said this man who also popularised Kiningan waterfall.

World Bank approves $500 mln grant package for Afghanistan projects

WASHINGTON - The World Bank on Tuesday approved financing worth more than $500 million for Afghanistan to support a string of projects to boost the economy, help improve service delivery in five cities and support Afghan refugees sent back from Pakistan.

The bank said the six grants, including donor money, worth some $520 million would help the Afghan government “at a time of uncertainty when risks to the economy are significant.”

The international troop withdrawal, which began in 2011, and political uncertainties have impacted Afghanistan’s economy,

while a worsening security situation has added to budget pressures, the World Bank said.

“The package will help Afghanistan with refugees, expand private-sector opportunities for the poor, boost the development of five cities, expand electrification, improve food security and build rural roads,” the World Bank said in a statement.

In May, a World Bank report said economic growth in the country was likely to pick up this year but not enough to provide jobs needed by its growing population.

The largest chunk of the package, some $205.4 million, will go

toward supporting communities affected by refugees returning from Pakistan, the World Bank said. Some 800,000 Afghans have been sent back from Pakistan and Iran, many of them left to rely on subsistence income in rural areas or low-paid work in towns.

In addition, $100 million will support reforms and business development for the poor; $20 million will go to improving services in five provincial capital cities; $29.4 million will help establish wheat reserves and improve grain storage; and $60 million will boost electricity in the western Herat province.(rtr)

Awakening Art Nostalgia of Dutch Occupation Period

Apart from office buildings another heritage left from the Dutch colonial period is the art of Janger that was a popular form of entertainment in Buleleng during the occupation. The Janger from Menyali village, Sawan that emerged during the colonial period has been reconstructed by the Janger Saraswati Art Troupe and was recently performed in the former Buleleng Harbour. The District of Buleleng will be presenting the Janger Menyali during the 39th Bali Arts Festival (BAF) in June at the Denpasar Art Center, evoking the heyday of this art form.

The Janger Menyali performance in Buleleng Harbour was especially interesting because it was performed by elderly dancers who had not performed the Janger since the 1960’s and 70’s. The dancers looking dapper in their attire of red berets, badges, shirts, socks and shoes, This costume, he said is different than the one usually worn by more contemporary Janger dances.

Headman of Menyali, Made Jaya Harta, explained that male Janger dancers used to be known as jipak. Jipak Janger dancers from his village indeed used to be wear costumes inspired by the Dutch Army that was docked at Buleleng Customs (former Buleleng Harbor—Ed). Over time, the style and costume of Janger Menyali changed under the influenced of other arts including “Janger Kreasi”.

“The songs and dance movements are similar but the costumes for “Janger Kresi” are quite different. Janger Menyali is rarely ever performed anymore and was on the verge of disappearing all together before this reconstruction was put together. There was one staging of this dance not too long ago in Lombok”, said Headman Harta.

The reconstruction of Janger Menyali started in Febuary 2017. It was considered to be important to revive this dance as it is believed to be a sacred dance (sanghyang dance). Harta and others are therefor committed to preserving the Janger Menyali dance.

“We have to preserve this ancestral heritage from the Dutch era. We started to reconstruct this dance by teaming up with the old dancers and then got some younger dancers involved. The result is a dance that can make Buleleng proud” explained Harta.(kmb)

WASHINGTON - Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Tuesday denounced as a “detestable lie” the idea he colluded with Russians meddling in the 2016 election, and he clashed with Democratic lawmakers over his refusal to detail his conversations with President Donald Trump.

Sessions, a senior member of Trump’s Cabinet and an adviser to his election campaign last year, had a series of tense exchanges with Democrats on the Senate Intelligence Committee during about 2-1/2 hours of testimony as they pressed him to recount discussions with the Republican president.

“You raised your right hand here today and said you would solemnly swear to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth,” Democratic Senator Martin Heinrich said. “Now you’re not answering questions. You’re impeding this investigation.”

Sessions’ testimony did not provide any damaging new information on Trump campaign ties with Russia or on Comey’s dismissal, but his refusal to discuss conversations with Trump raised fresh questions about whether the White House has something to hide.

High-level U.S. visit leads N.Korea to free student in coma WASHINGTON - Otto Warmbier, an American university student held prisoner in North Korea for 17 months and said by his family to be in a coma, was medically evacuated from the reclusive country after a rare visit there from a high-level U.S. official.

Warmbier, 22, a University of Virginia student from suburban Cincinnati, arrived in the United States on Tuesday evening, witnesses said.

His release came after Joseph Yun, the U.S. State Department’s special envoy on North Korea, traveled to Pyongyang and demanded Warmbier’s release on “humanitarian grounds,” capping a flurry of secret diplomatic contacts, a U.S. official said.

Warmbier’s parents, Fred and Cindy, confirmed their son was on a medevac flight.

“Sadly, he is in a coma and we have been told he has been in that condition since March of 2016,” the parents said in a statement. “We learned of this only one week ago.

We want the world to know how we and our son have been brutalized and terrorized by the pariah regime in North Korea.”

Warmbier was detained in January 2016 and sentenced to 15 years of hard labor in March last year for trying to steal an item with a propaganda slogan, according to North Korean media.

Cincinnati Municipal Lunken Airport at around 10.15 p.m. local time (0215 GMT), according to a Reuters witness. Medical personnel carried a male, believed to be Warmbier and wearing a blue shirt and dark blue pants, off the plane without the use of a stretcher.

The person carried from the plane did not appear to be moving independently, the Reuters witness said.

A small group of family friends was nearby to celebrate Warmbier’s arrival, cheering and holding signs that read “Pray for Otto” and “Welcome home Otto.”

The man was loaded into an ambulance bound for the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, where a hospital spokeswoman said he would receive treatment.

Warmbier’s family said they were told by North Korean officials, through contacts with American envoys, that Warmbier fell ill from botulism some time after his March 2016 trial and lapsed into a coma after taking a sleeping pill, the Washington Post reported.

The New York Times quoted a senior U.S. official as saying Washington recently received intelligence reports that Warmbier had been repeatedly beaten in custody.

Inmates escape from Indonesian prison after wall collapses JAMBI — Dozens of inmates escaped early Wednesday from an overcrowded prison in western Indonesia after floods caused a wall to collapse, officials said. Torrential rain overnight inundated homes and buildings in Jambi, the capital of Jambi province on Sumatra island.

The head of the provincial Law and Human Rights Ministry, Bambang Palasara, said at least 21 prisoners had been recaptured and about 30 others were still at large. He said the prison was designed to house 350 inmates but had 1,238.

Local police chief Brig. Gen. Priyo Widyanto said more than 100 policemen, soldiers and city security officers were guarding and evacuating inmates from the prison, which was still partly flooded.

The prison’s extreme overcrowding has frequently triggered

unrest. Dozens of inmates escaped in March during a riot in which one block of the prison was set on fire. Some are believed to still be at large.

Jailbreaks are common in Indonesia, where overcrowding has become a problem in prisons that are struggling to cope with poor funding and an influx of people arrested in a war on drugs. Most prisoners have been convicted on drug charges.

Last month, more than 440 prisoners escaped from a penitentiary in neighboring Riau province when they were let out of their cells to take part in Friday Muslim prayers. In July 2013, about 240 prisoners, including several convicted terrorists, escaped during a deadly riot at a prison in Medan, the capital of North Sumatra province. (ap)

JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has said that the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) must continue to be strong because of extraordinary efforts are needed to fight against corruption in the country.

Indonesia needs a strong and independent KPK in the fight against corruption, Jokowi said at the presidential palace complex here on Tuesday. He stated that no one should try to weaken the anti-graft agency; instead, every stakeholder should make a decision that could strengthen KPK. If KPK needs improvement, it should be done by strengthening the efforts to eradicate corruption, he remarked. Meanwhile, seven political party factions have agreed to join a special committee in an inquiry on KPK. The factions are PDIP, Golkar, Hanura, Nasdem, PPP, Gerindra, and PAN. Only PKS and Democrat party factions do not want to join the committee.

The inquiry motion came after KPK rejected a request earlier by the Law Commission of the DPR to hand over a recorded copy of the dossiers of former lawmaker Miryam S. Haryani, who has been implicated in a Rp5.9 trillion scandal over the procurement of electronic identity (e-ID) card project.

Based on the dossiers read by the KPK prosecutor in a court session earlier, more than 50 lawmakers, including the current House Speaker Setya Novanto, high-ranking government officials, and businessmen, were allegedly implicated in the scandal. The KPK has strongly expressed regret over the motion, calling it a political maneuver by some of the lawmakers to obstruct the investigation. (ant)

General Gatot Nurmantyo’s comments late on Monday that there are clandestine “sleeper” cells across the sprawling Indonesian archipelago underscored concerns about Islamic State’s growing influence in Southeast Asia.

“After observation, we see that in almost every province ... there are already IS cells, but they are sleeper cells,” Nurmantyo told reporters in the capital, Jakarta. He singled out the predominantly Christian province of Papua as one of the few exceptions. “These sleeper cells can easily join up with other radical cells,” he said. Governments across the region have been on high alert since Islamic State-linked militants, mostly from Southeast Asian countries, overran a city in the southern Philippines about three weeks ago.

Lontar weaving. Like bamboo, Lontar is a kind of palm tree that is common to the Indonesian islands.

The leaves of this tree are used in a variety of ways for weaving and as thatch. Balinese artisans have learned how to score the lontar using sharp knives and chisels to craft words and images that come to life when a natural ink-like ash is applied to the worked lontar. Quite beautiful to see.

Balinese dance. Nearly every visitor to Bali takes the opportunity to watch one or more of the many, stylized Bali dances that are performed nearly every evening on the island.

Dance and music have thrived in Bali for centuries. Balinese dancers begin to learn their steps and body alignment as young children, and most professional dancers “retire” when they marry. As young men and women, these dancers form traveling dance and music troupes and vie amongst themselves for local and island-wide celebrity. Balinese dances are highly-choreographed and tradition-bound, not unlike classical Russian ballet. A dancer usually performs and practices many years before her repertoire is mature and complete.

Bamboo carving. Ayu would like

to offer the opportunity for people to experience bamboo carving at her gallery. This is a new class.

Our teacher will guide students to create either bamboo animal carvings like dragonflies or butterflies; or, if you’d prefer, a wind chime or a small flute. This style of carving is new- utilizing bamboo to craft pieces of art in a ‘modern style’.

The simple forms make this carving style easy to follow; but because bamboo is carved with a knife- we recommend that children younger that 12 years of age take advantage of our wood carving class as a suitable alternative.

Offerings. For hundreds of years, Balinese families have passed down the ritual of daily offerings, called canang, from mother to daughter. Each day, the women create these small, hand-woven coconut-leaf baskets. The baskets contain the flower, fruit, rice and food offerings for the Hindu Deities that the women pray to each day. The baskets can be rather simple to construct, or can involve a delicate, creative touch- there are many forms that canang can take. The offerings are inseparable from prayer in Hindu belief, as the purpose of the offering is to sustain and patronize the Gods- who are then more likely to respond to one’s prayers. (IBP/net)

LONDON - Ousmane Dembele fired the winner as 10-man France beat England 3-2 in an entertaining friendly on Tuesday after Harry Kane had scored twice for the visitors and France’s Raphael Varane was sent off early in the second half. LONDON - Ousmane Dembele fired the winner as 10-man France beat England 3-2 in an entertaining friendly on Tuesday after Harry Kane had scored twice for the visitors and France’s Raphael Varane was sent off early in the second half. Winger Dembele sealed the victory with an angled shot from inside the box 12 minutes from fulltime after being nicely set up by fellow youngster Kylian Mbappe.

England captain Kane put them ahead from close range from a low Ryan Bertrand cross before the 10-minute mark and levelled the game at 2-2 with a penalty early in the second half after Varane was sent off for bringing down Dele Alli in the box.

Lontar weaving. Like bamboo, Lontar is a kind of palm tree that is common to the Indonesian islands.

The leaves of this tree are used in a variety of ways for weaving and as thatch. Balinese artisans have learned how to score the lontar using sharp knives and chisels to craft words and images that come to life when a natural ink-like ash is applied to the worked lontar. Quite beautiful to see.

Balinese dance. Nearly every visitor to Bali takes the opportunity to watch one or more of the many, stylized Bali dances that are performed nearly every evening on the island.

Dance and music have thrived in Bali for centuries. Balinese dancers begin to learn their steps and body alignment as young children, and most professional dancers “retire” when they marry. As young men and women, these dancers form traveling dance and music troupes and vie amongst themselves for local and island-wide celebrity. Balinese dances are highly-choreographed and tradition-bound, not unlike classical Russian ballet. A dancer usually performs and practices many years before her repertoire is mature and complete.

to offer the opportunity for people to experience bamboo carving at her gallery. This is a new class.

Our teacher will guide students to create either bamboo animal carvings like dragonflies or butterflies; or, if you’d prefer, a wind chime or a small flute. This style of carving is new- utilizing bamboo to craft pieces of art in a ‘modern style’.

The simple forms make this carving style easy to follow; but because bamboo is carved with a knife- we recommend that children younger that 12 years of age take advantage of our wood carving class as a suitable alternative.

Offerings. For hundreds of years, Balinese families have passed down the ritual of daily offerings, called canang, from mother to daughter. Each day, the women create these small, hand-woven coconut-leaf baskets. The baskets contain the flower, fruit, rice and food offerings for the Hindu Deities that the women pray to each day. The baskets can be rather simple to construct, or can involve a delicate, creative touch- there are many forms that canang can take. The offerings are inseparable from prayer in Hindu belief, as the purpose of the offering is to sustain and patronize the Gods- who are then more likely to respond to one’s prayers. (IBP/net)

WASHINGTON - Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Tuesday denounced as a “detestable lie” the idea he colluded with Russians meddling in the 2016 election, and he clashed with Democratic lawmakers over his refusal to detail his conversations with President Donald Trump.

Sessions, a senior member of Trump’s Cabinet and an adviser to his election campaign last year, had a series of tense exchanges with Democrats on the Senate Intelligence Committee during about 2-1/2 hours of testimony as they pressed him to recount discussions with the Republican president.

“You raised your right hand here today and said you would solemnly swear to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth,” Democratic Senator Martin Heinrich said. “Now you’re not answering questions. You’re impeding this investigation.”

Adam Schiff, the top Democrat on the House of Representatives’ Intelligence Committee, which is conducting a parallel Russia probe, said on Twitter that Congress “must compel responses using whatever process necessary.”

Last week, Comey told the Senate committee that Trump had fired him to undermine the FBI’s investigation of the Russia matter.

Trump’s decision to fire Comey, a move recommended by Sessions despite having already recused himself from the Russia probe, prompted critics to charge that the president was trying to interfere with a criminal investigation.

High-level U.S. visit leads N.Korea to free student in coma WASHINGTON - Otto Warmbier, an American university student held prisoner in North Korea for 17 months and said by his family to be in a coma, was medically evacuated from the reclusive country after a rare visit there from a high-level U.S. official.

Warmbier, 22, a University of Virginia student from suburban Cincinnati, arrived in the United States on Tuesday evening, witnesses said.

His release came after Joseph Yun, the U.S. State Department’s special envoy on North Korea, traveled to Pyongyang and demanded Warmbier’s release on “humanitarian grounds,” capping a flurry of secret diplomatic contacts, a U.S. official said.

Warmbier’s parents, Fred and Cindy, confirmed their son was on a medevac flight.

“Sadly, he is in a coma and we have been told he has been in that condition since March of 2016,” the parents said in a statement. “We learned of this only one week ago.

We want the world to know how we and our son have been brutalized and terrorized by the pariah regime in North Korea.”

Warmbier was detained in January 2016 and sentenced to 15 years of hard labor in March last year for trying to steal an item with a propaganda slogan, according to North Korean media.

A local residents association had previously warned it was worried about the risk of a serious fire in the block.

“These questions are really important questions that need to be answered,” Khan said. “What we can’t have is a situation where people’s safety is put at risk because of bad advice being given or if it is the case, as has been alleged, of tower blocks not being properly serviced or maintained.”

Ash Sha, 30, who witnessed the fire and has an aunt in the building

who managed to escape from the second floor, said the local council had recently renovated the tower.

“They cladded the outside and insulated the inside,” Sha said. “The insulated material is very similar to sponge so it crumbles in your hand.

This was just done to tart it up and match the nearby building.”

The local council of Kensington and Chelsea, which owns the block, said it was focusing on supporting the rescue and relief operation. It said the causes of the fire would be fully investigated. Police closed the A40, a major road leading out of west London, while some parts of London’s underground train network were closed as a precaution. (rtr)

Inmates escape from Indonesian prison after wall collapses JAMBI — Dozens of inmates escaped early Wednesday from an overcrowded prison in western Indonesia after floods caused a wall to collapse, officials said. Torrential rain overnight inundated homes and buildings in Jambi, the capital of Jambi province on Sumatra island.

The head of the provincial Law and Human Rights Ministry, Bambang Palasara, said at least 21 prisoners had been recaptured and about 30 others were still at large. He said the prison was designed to house 350 inmates but had 1,238.

Local police chief Brig. Gen. Priyo Widyanto said more than 100 policemen, soldiers and city security officers were guarding and evacuating inmates from the prison, which was still partly flooded.

The prison’s extreme overcrowding has frequently triggered

unrest. Dozens of inmates escaped in March during a riot in which one block of the prison was set on fire. Some are believed to still be at large.

Jailbreaks are common in Indonesia, where overcrowding has become a problem in prisons that are struggling to cope with poor funding and an influx of people arrested in a war on drugs. Most prisoners have been convicted on drug charges.

Last month, more than 440 prisoners escaped from a penitentiary in neighboring Riau province when they were let out of their cells to take part in Friday Muslim prayers. In July 2013, about 240 prisoners, including several convicted terrorists, escaped during a deadly riot at a prison in Medan, the capital of North Sumatra province. (ap)

Corruption Eradication Commission must continue to be strong: President

JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has said that the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) must continue to be strong because of extraordinary efforts are needed to fight against corruption in the country.

Indonesia needs a strong and independent KPK in the fight against corruption, Jokowi said at the presidential palace complex here on Tuesday. He stated that no one should try to weaken the anti-graft agency; instead, every stakeholder should make a decision that could strengthen KPK. If KPK needs improvement, it should be done by strengthening the efforts to eradicate corruption, he remarked. Meanwhile, seven political party factions have agreed to join a special committee in an inquiry on KPK. The factions are PDIP, Golkar, Hanura, Nasdem, PPP, Gerindra, and PAN. Only PKS and Democrat party factions do not want to join the committee.

Agun Gunanjar of Golkar Party has been named as the chairman of the special committee.

The motion initiated by several lawmakers, particularly from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP), Golkar, and the National Democrats (Nasdem) parties, to exercise inquiry rights on KPK has received criticism from various parties, particularly from several legal experts.

The inquiry motion came after KPK rejected a request earlier by the Law Commission of the DPR to hand over a recorded copy of the dossiers of former lawmaker Miryam S. Haryani, who has been implicated in a Rp5.9 trillion scandal over the procurement of electronic identity (e-ID) card project.

Based on the dossiers read by the KPK prosecutor in a court session earlier, more than 50 lawmakers, including the current House Speaker Setya Novanto, high-ranking government officials, and businessmen, were allegedly implicated in the scandal. The KPK has strongly expressed regret over the motion, calling it a political maneuver by some of the lawmakers to obstruct the investigation. (ant)

Islamic State cells in nearly all Indonesian provinces - military chief

JAKARTA - The Islamic State militant group has a presence in nearly all provinces across Indonesia, the world’s largest Muslimmajority country, the military chief in Jakarta has said. General Gatot Nurmantyo’s comments late on Monday that there are clandestine “sleeper” cells across the sprawling Indonesian archipelago underscored concerns about Islamic State’s growing influence in Southeast Asia.

“After observation, we see that in almost every province ... there are already IS cells, but they are sleeper cells,” Nurmantyo told reporters in the capital, Jakarta. He singled out the predominantly Christian province of Papua as one of the few exceptions. “These sleeper cells can easily join up with other radical cells,” he said. Governments across the region have been on high alert since Islamic State-linked militants, mostly from Southeast Asian countries, overran a city in the southern Philippines about three weeks ago.

The Philippine military, which has carried out air

strikes and raids in Marawi city, said on Tuesday the militants still control about 20 percent of the city. Indonesian and Malaysian officials have stepped up security to prevent militants from escaping from Marawi over their shared borders with the Philippines. “It’s easy to jump from Marawi to Indonesia and we must all beware of sleeper cells being activated in Indonesia,” Nurmantyo said.

Southeast Asian nations believe the region is home to thousands of Islamic State sympathisers, and Indonesia and Malaysia have detained scores of suspected militants in recent years. Singapore said on Monday it had detained an assistant child-care worker suspected of trying to join Islamic State, the first woman to be held on such charges in Singapore.

A gun-and-bomb attack that killed four people in Jakarta last year marked the first Islamic State strike in the region.

BUSINESS China insurance mogul said unable to work, reported detained

BEIJING — The Chinese insurer that owns New York City’s Waldorf Astoria Hotel said Wednesday its chairman has turned over his duties to other executives following a report he was detained by regulators amid accusations of possible financial misconduct. Anbang Insurance Group Ltd. Chairman Wu Xiaohui was “temporarily unable to perform his duties due to personal reasons,” said a one-sentence statement on the company website. It said Wu had authorized other executives to do his work and gave no other details.

On Monday, the magazine Caijing reported that Wu, who founded Anbang in 2004 and built it into one of China’s biggest insurers, was detained last week by insurance regulators. Citing unidentified sources, it said authorities told the company about the detention but gave no reason. Spokespeople for Anbang did not respond to phone calls or emails. The China Insurance Regulatory Commission did not respond to questions sent by fax.

Anbang has been under scrutiny since a multibillion-dollar global string of asset purchases, including buying the Waldorf for $2 billion, raised questions about how it was paying for its buying spree. The privately held company said the money was raised from shareholders. It denied a report by another magazine, Caixin, in April that Anbang improperly used payments from policyholders to increase its capital base.

More recently, the company has

suffered setbacks including failing to complete several foreign takeovers. That included the proposed purchase of U.S.-based Fidelity & Guaranty Life for $1.6 billion. In May, Anbang was ordered to stop selling two financial products that regulators said violated industry rules.

Other Chinese insurers also have been investigated following complaints of reckless speculation in stocks and real estate. The chairman of the Chinese insurance regulator is under investigation by the national anti-corruption agency.

Regulators say reducing financial risks in the Chinese economy is a priority this year. Rising Chinese debt levels have prompted concern about the stability of the country’s financial system.

Anbang has a reputation for unusually aggressive expansion in a Chinese insurance industry dominated by state-owned companies.

Ketut Purna who has been instrumental in this process, said that as of a week ago a path to the waterfalls has been opened.

He explained that local residents have been bathing at these waterfalls for a very long time but that acces was not easy until recently. Since the road and path have been opened, children have been coming the waterfall in droves. “Now, almost every day, children from our village come here to bathe. Sometimes, they also help us cleanup the area”, said this man who also popularised Kiningan waterfall.

World Bank approves $500 mln grant package for Afghanistan projects

WASHINGTON - The World Bank on Tuesday approved financing worth more than $500 million for Afghanistan to support a string of projects to boost the economy, help improve service delivery in five cities and support Afghan refugees sent back from Pakistan.

The bank said the six grants, including donor money, worth some $520 million would help the Afghan government “at a time of uncertainty when risks to the economy are significant.”

The international troop withdrawal, which began in 2011, and political uncertainties have impacted Afghanistan’s economy,

while a worsening security situation has added to budget pressures, the World Bank said.

“The package will help Afghanistan with refugees, expand private-sector opportunities for the poor, boost the development of five cities, expand electrification, improve food security and build rural roads,” the World Bank said in a statement.

In May, a World Bank report said economic growth in the country was likely to pick up this year but not enough to provide jobs needed by its growing population.

The largest chunk of the package, some $205.4 million, will go

toward supporting communities affected by refugees returning from Pakistan, the World Bank said. Some 800,000 Afghans have been sent back from Pakistan and Iran, many of them left to rely on subsistence income in rural areas or low-paid work in towns.

In addition, $100 million will support reforms and business development for the poor; $20 million will go to improving services in five provincial capital cities; $29.4 million will help establish wheat reserves and improve grain storage; and $60 million will boost electricity in the western Herat province.(rtr)

Awakening Art Nostalgia of Dutch Occupation Period

Apart from office buildings another heritage left from the Dutch colonial period is the art of Janger that was a popular form of entertainment in Buleleng during the occupation. The Janger from Menyali village, Sawan that emerged during the colonial period has been reconstructed by the Janger Saraswati Art Troupe and was recently performed in the former Buleleng Harbour. The District of Buleleng will be presenting the Janger Menyali during the 39th Bali Arts Festival (BAF) in June at the Denpasar Art Center, evoking the heyday of this art form.

The Janger Menyali performance in Buleleng Harbour was especially interesting because it was performed by elderly dancers who had not performed the Janger since the 1960’s and 70’s. The dancers looking dapper in their attire of red berets, badges, shirts, socks and shoes, This costume, he said is different than the one usually worn by more contemporary Janger dances.

Headman of Menyali, Made Jaya Harta, explained that male Janger dancers used to be known as jipak. Jipak Janger dancers from his village indeed used to be wear costumes inspired by the Dutch Army that was docked at Buleleng Customs (former Buleleng Harbor—Ed). Over time, the style and costume of Janger Menyali changed under the influenced of other arts including “Janger Kreasi”.

“The songs and dance movements are similar but the costumes for “Janger Kresi” are quite different. Janger Menyali is rarely ever performed anymore and was on the verge of disappearing all together before this reconstruction was put together. There was one staging of this dance not too long ago in Lombok”, said Headman Harta.

The reconstruction of Janger Menyali started in Febuary 2017. It was considered to be important to revive this dance as it is believed to be a sacred dance (sanghyang dance). Harta and others are therefor committed to preserving the Janger Menyali dance.

“We have to preserve this ancestral heritage from the Dutch era. We started to reconstruct this dance by teaming up with the old dancers and then got some younger dancers involved. The result is a dance that can make Buleleng proud” explained Harta.(kmb)

Australian tourist goes through broken leg when surfing

GIANYAR — An Australian tourist, John, experienced a disaster when surfing on Cucukan Beach, Medahaan village, Blahbatuh, on Tuesday (Jun 13). This 40-year-old man from Melbourne had broken bone of leg due to the disaster.

The Gianyar disaster mitigation agency (BPBD) immediately came down to location in order to provide relief. As information collected, the weather and wave conditions on Cucukan Beach, Medahan, Blahbatuh, was less friendly from the morning. However, John who came to the location forced himself to keep on surfing with a number of friends.

Well, when getting absorbed in surfing, the victim was alleged to fall and his feet hit coral reef. Fortunately, John is still able to swim to the beach and he shouted for help. Local people seeing the incident immediately carried the victim to the beach.

Lifesaver officers on duty at the location also directly contacted a vehicle to deliver the victim to BMC Hospital Kuta. Until Tuesday evening, the victim was still undergoing medical treatment. “On the request of the victim, he was immediately rushed to BMC Kuta, Badung,” said the Head of the BPBD Gianyar, A.A. Oka Digjaya.

When asked about the bad weather condition in Gianyar lately, this man from Sukawati said that in the face of the threat of disaster due to bad weather, the BPBD Gianyar is on duty for 24 hours to anticipate unfavorable things such fallen trees, landslides, floods and other disasters.

Arie said that until now his section has not been able to ensure the tendency whether the number of passengers on this year’s Lebaran holiday will increase or decrease. He added the increase

and decrease trend of passengers will be known at the opening of Lebaran desk.

However, Arie estimated the peak of homecoming traffic can occur on day two and day one before Lebaran because the last working day is on Friday while Lebaran falls on Sunday. In the meantime, the peak of backflow is estimated to occur on day six and day seven after Lebaran.

Lawless waters test SE Asian nations in fight against Islamic State

SINGAPORE - Militants, pirates, drug traffickers, gun runners - the waters between Borneo and the southern Philippines have them all, but as an Islamic State faction burst on the scene in recent weeks, this corner of Southeast Asia plumbed new levels of insecurity.

The mostly Muslim countries of Indonesia and Malaysia, and those with sizeable Muslim minorities, like the Philippines, have been on high alert for fighters returning home from Islamic State frontlines in Syria and Iraq.

So when dozens of Malaysians, Indonesians, Arabs and Chechens showed up in Marawi City on Mindanao island, fighting alongside a Philippine franchise of Islamic State, a nightmare scenario suddenly took shape.

The danger of global jihadis establishing a base in the Philippines, running satellite cells to launch attacks across Southeast Asia, made governments in the region realise just how vulnerable they could be.

“It’s easy to jump from Marawi to Indonesia and we must all beware of sleeper cells being activated in Indonesia,” General Gatot Nurmantyo, Indonesia’s military chief said on Monday.

According to the general, there are Islamic State sleeper cells in almost all of Indonesia’s 34 provinces.

Indonesia has called for a conference with the Philippines and Malaysia to discuss events in Marawi - where the Philippine military, backed by U.S. special forces are still battling after more than three weeks to retake the town from fighters led by the IS-inspired Maute brothers.

So far, Islamic State-inspired attacks have been relatively smallscale in Indonesia, the country with the world’s largest Muslim population. But they have become more frequent. Last month, suicide bombers killed three police officers at a Jakarta bus station.

Malaysia, meanwhile, has used draconian security laws to detain scores of suspected militants and Islamic State sympathisers.

AIR AND SEA Next week, the three countries, with Singapore’s assistance, will begin joint air surveillance over the Sulu Sea, using reconnaissance planes and drones, and enhance joint naval patrols.

Their navies planned joint patrols last year after a spate of

kidnappings by Abu Sayyaf, a well established militant group that has declared support for Islamic State.

But there are plenty of gaps to fill.

“We don’t have communications via radio at this point. We conduct patrols in our own territory. We have not discussed exchanging personnel,” said First Admiral Ferial Fachroni, commander of Indonesia’s Tarakan naval base in North Kalimantan.

He told Reuters joint operations would begin this month. Situated on Borneo’s northeast coast, Tarakan is the nearest Indonesian naval base to kidnappers’ hunting grounds in the Celebes and Sulu Seas.

Keeping tabs on hundreds of merchant ships, fishing boats and ferries plying routes between the islands, deciding when and who to stop and search will be a tall order even for three navies working together.

The archipelagos’ heavily forested coves and inlets provide excellent cover for any fast vessel looking to escape closer scrutiny.

“The Sulu Sea area has always had sporadic incidents like kidnappings of tourists before, but starting last year and this year, it has really gone up,” Noel Chung, the Kuala Lumpur-based Asia head of the International Maritime Bureau, said. (rtr)

ANKARA - Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday denounced the isolation of Qatar by neighbouring states as a violation of Islamic values and akin to a “death penalty” imposed in a crisis that has reverberated across the Middle East and beyond.

Erdogan’s comments marked the strongest intervention yet by a powerful regional ally of Doha eight days after Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt cut ties with Qatar and applied stringent economic sanctions on it.

Later on Tuesday, the UAE ambassador to the United States, which has an air base in Qatar, said there was no military component to the steps taken against Doha.

Qatar denies accusations that it supports Islamist militants and Shi’ite Iran, arch regional foe of the Sunni Gulf Arab monarchies.

“A very grave mistake is being made in Qatar; isolating a nation in all areas is inhumane and against Islamic values. It’s as if a death penalty decision has been taken for Qatar,” Erdogan told members of his ruling AK Party in Ankara.

“Qatar has shown the most decisive stance against the terrorist organisation Islamic State alongside Turkey. Victimising Qatar through smear campaigns serves no purpose.”

The measures against Qatar, a small oil and gas exporter with a population of 2.7 million people, have disrupted imports of food and other materials and caused some foreign banks to scale back business.

The UAE envoy, Yousef Al Otaiba, told reporters in Washington: “There is absolutely no military

component to anything that we are doing.”

“I have spoken and seen (U.S. Defense Secretary) General (Jim) Mattis four times in the last week; we’ve given them our complete assurance that the steps we have taken will not affect in anyway Al Udeid base or any operations supporting or regarding the base,” Otaiba said.

Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar is home to more than 11,000 U.S. and coalition forces and an important base for the fight against Islamic State militants in the region.

The chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, Joseph Dunford, told a Senate hearing that the rift between Qatar and its neighbours was not affecting U.S. military operations.

Qatar, which imported 80 percent of its food from bigger Gulf Arab neighbours before the diplomatic shutdown, has been talking to Iran and Turkey to secure food and water.

The world’s second largest helium producer, Qatar has also shut its two helium production plants because of the economic boycott, industry sources told Reuters on Tuesday.

Turkey has maintained good relations with Qatar as well as several of its Gulf Arab neighbours. Turkey and Qatar have both provided support for the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt and backed rebels fighting to overthrow Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi also criticised the measures imposed on Qatar, saying in Baghdad on Tuesday they were hurting the emirate’s people, not its rulers. (rtr)

Prenatal fever linked to autism risk

NEW YORK - Children born to mothers who experienced fever, especially multiple fevers, during the second trimester of pregnancy are at increased risk for developing autism spectrum disorder (ASD), a new study suggests.

Researchers found that mothers who experienced a fever over 99 degrees F (37.22 C) during the second trimester of pregnancy had a 40 percent increased risk of having a child with ASD compared to women who had no fevers.

But none of the women who used ibuprofen to treat a fever during pregnancy gave birth to children later diagnosed with autism, the researchers note.

“What is particularly important about our findings is that it not only strengthens the evidence for a particular pathway for ASD, but it also suggests that we may be very close to understanding how to safely mitigate or prevent some outcomes by directing prevention or intervention strategies toward this pathway,” said lead author Dr. Mady Hornig of Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health in New York.

An increased risk of ASD among women with prenatal fevers has been reported before, the authors write in the journal Molecular Psychiatry. What’s new about this study is that it is the first large, prospective investigation showing a so-called dose-response effect.

The chances of ASD rose with the number of maternal fevers, increasing by more than 300 percent if a mother had three or more fevers after the first trimester.

Since fever is caused by acute inflammation, the profound difference in risk of ASD is consistent with the idea that a longer exposure of the fetus to an inflammatory environment in the womb can cause a greater disruption of brain development, said Hornig. A crosstalk of immune molecules called cytokines can reach the fetus across the placenta to affect the developing brain.

The findings also provide clues to suggest women are using the wrong drug during pregnancy to bring down fever, according to Hornig. While none of the mothers who took the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) ibuprofen to treat fever during the second trimester had a child who developed ASD, mothers who took acetaminophen during this time made very little difference in their child’s fever-related risk for ASD. The study analyzed data on 95,754 women participating in the Norwegian Mother and Child Cohort Study, which is following pregnant Norwegian women and their children born between 1999 and 2009.

Among its limitations is that small numbers of women used ibuprofen during pregnancy so researchers can’t be confident that ibuprofen had mitigating effects.

In addition, the study did not address the causes of fever, such as microbial infections. “An ongoing study is testing blood samples collected at mid-pregnancy and at birth to explore the possible role of specific infectious agents and the contribution of distinctive patterns of immune response among mothers and children to understand the mechanisms creating vulnerability,” the researchers note in a statement.

However, some argue that an in-depth study on the matter is needed especially considering that in Bali most students are bound by customary and cultural preservation activities after school hours.

“We remain to admire imported fruits because of its appearance.

Actually, imported fruits is not necessarily good for health,” said this lecturer at the Faculty of Agriculture, Udayana University.

Guava contains vitamin C four times higher than oranges. In the meantime, the developing understanding in the community is when people need vitamin C, they will consume oranges. Guava is less favored by the community because of its abundant seeds so that it is not convenient for consumption. In addition, people consider less prestigious to use local fruits. “Perhaps, it is less desirable because of its appearance,” she added.

Besides, the harvest of local fruits is not timely. Generally, farmers want to get results immediately. So, when unripe fruits have been harvested, it will not taste maximally.

She saw that guava in particular is rarely sold on a commercial scale. Currently, guava farms have been available in Plaga, Bedugul and Mendoyo. Guava takes nine months from planting until it is ready to be harvested. Guava can be cultivated by grafting and inosculating. Most popular method is by inosculating. Today, communities mostly cultivate crystal and red brittle species obtained from East Java.

Both types of guava are much in demand in the market because the seeds of crystal guava are small and its flesh is crunchy, while the red brittle is more preferred because people trust that red brittle guava can increase platelets.

Guava has no season so that it bears fruits all the time. However, it has massive harvest around May. The selling price of crystal guava is also high namely at IDR 20,000 per kg, higher than red brittle only costing IDR 12,000 per kg. Research at Wasan site continues Chief of the Agency for Cultural Heritage Preservation of Bali, NTB and NTT, I Gusti Made Suarbawa, explained that the team has been investigating the site since Saturday (Jun 10) and will continue to do so for 14 days -until Friday (Jun 23). “Researchers are working on the site with the aim of finding the supporting buildings of Wasan Temple” said Suarbawa when met at the wantilan hall of the Puseh Wasan Temple on Tuesday (Jun 13).

Suarbawa said this research is picking up from the findings of 2016 when stone building structures were found. He added that the first two days of investigation have so far not revealed the types of buildings that support the Wasan temple site. “We are still excavating, but haven’t found anything conclusive yet”, he said Base in the type of soil texture, Suarbawa theories that the buildings were buried following flash floods.

The type of floating soil also indicates the the area had been covered in volcanic ash from the eruption of Mount Rinjani in Lombok in the past, According to Suarbawa, based on the statues found at the site that include a four-faced Brahma statue, Goddess statues and a Nandhi statues with pedestal embellished with skulls, it is estimated that the the Wasan temple complex dates from the thirteenth or fourteenth century Other finds at the temple site include a Ganesha statue, linga-yoni, statues of human figures and of animals.

Discoveries made at the Wasan temple site are inseparable from the role of a Dutch researcher named JC Krishman, who first visited the Wasan site in 1950 and found mounds and a number of statues scattered about.

The local community of temple devotees established a sanctum at the site with a small building. A few years later, the Denpasar Archaeological Institute investi-

gated the site and found a number of relic statues that dated from the fourteenth century. “Actually this was by accident. In 1986, the Archeological Institute was doing research at Cangi but local residents requested that they check out the Wasan site” he explained.

Excavation of the site was started in 2006 and went on until 2016 yielding archeological remains including a stone temple with a pond that was restored by the Agency for Cultural Heritage Preservation of Bali, NTB and NTT in 2009. The desire to know more continued with the suspicion that there was another building that had yet to be revealed. Further excavations were from 2011 until 2017.

Priest of the Puseh Wasan temple, Jro Mangku Wayan Lasia Siaja, explained that previously the area was completely overgrown but now it is totally transformed. “ There used to be four banyan trees here” he added.

Now, that the relics have been revealed, he said that he very much supports the excavations that allow people to know about the history of the Wasan site. Is quite unique in that it is only supported by ten families from three different hamlets. Five of the families are from Blahtanah hamlet, Batuan Kaler, one family from Tangkeban hamlet, Batubulan Kangin and four other families from Kenanga hamlet, Batubulan Kangin.

The temple is strategically located near DenpasarGilimanuk Road, making it easily accessible to tourists, said Jro Mangku Wayan Lasia Siaja. IN fact a number of foreign tourists have visited the site. “There have been guests from the Netherlands and France who visited. They got information on the internet and come here for spiritual purposes. Tourists often complain that they have trouble finding the site’, he said.

Following such complaints, Jro Mangku asked the Gianyar Agency for Cultural Preservation ( PBCB) to have a signboard put up to make the site easier to find, but until now this has not been realized, he said.

“Around the year 2000, tourists frequently came here, some even stayed here meditating all night. But after that tourists rarely came to visit, I suspect it is because the site is hard for them to find”, he concluded. (kmb35)

Job fair faces obstacle as opportunities and applications are not matching up SINGARAJA - A job fair in the district if Buleleng opened on Tuesday (Jun 13) at the former harbor of Buleleng. The event that will run until June 15th is being held as a way to reduce the rate of unemployment in this district.

However, as with previous years, this annual event is having trouble matching the desires of applicants with available positions.

Head of the Buleleng Manpower Agency, Made Dwi Priyanti, explained that the job fair involves 20 companies of various types in Buleleng who offer 6,604 job opportunities. “There are thousands of jobs available” she said. The goal of this annual job fair is to help organize manpower placement with the government, the private and the public sector so as to help reduce the relatively high unemployment rate by having job seekers matched with jobs. “Of coure we want to see unemployment rates go down also help businesses fulfil their need for qualified personnel” she explained.

Unfortunately there seems to still be a discrepancy between the types of jobs that the unemployed are looking for and the types of jobs being offered. “ For example,

a company or institution may be looking for a graduated accountant but none of the job seekers have such a diploma” said Priyanti.

In response to this ongoing discrepancy, this bureaucrat from Banyuatis village, Banjar, explained that the government of Buleleng has been continuously encouraging job seekers to gain skills required to fill the job vacancies. “We have directed people to take 6- month vocational training in things like foreign language proficiency. We aim to have a 75% of job seekers placed in suitable positions” she said.

Regent of Buleleng, Putu Agus Suradnyana, explained that Buleleng’S potential workforce is growing every year and that many people are interested in working in tourism. However tourism in Buelleng is not as developed as it is in South Bali, so it is not realistic for everyone to expect to work in this sector. The district government is nonetheless continuing to to improve accessibility “With good access, the tourism sector can grow here and thus have a positive impact on the workforce” he concluded. Ice Cube gets Hollywood star, thanks all “who helped me get here”

LOS ANGELES - Rapper-turned-actor Ice Cube received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Monday and thanked everyone who helped his career in music and movies.

Friends and family attended the ceremony on Hollywood Boulevard, including Dr. Dre, a former fellow member of the seminal “gangsta” rap group N.W.A. “You know, you don’t get here by yourself and when you’re coming up doing music, movies, just trying to be creative, you never figure you’ll be on the Hollywood Walk of Fame one day,” Ice Cube said.

“So today is not really about Ice Cube, it’s about all the people who helped me get here,” he added.

Ice Cube, born as O’Shea Jackson, found fame in the 1980s alongside Dr. Dre in the influential West Coast rap group N.W.A., writing many of the song lyrics for their iconic “Straight Outta Compton” album.

After leaving the group over a royalty dispute, he released his debut solo album “AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted” in 1990.

The rapper began acting in movies in 1991 with a starring role in John Singleton’s film about life in a Los Angeles ghetto, “Boyz n the Hood.” He has since appeared in the films “Friday”, “Barbershop”, and “Three Kings.”

Ice Cube was also a producer on the 2015 biopic “Straight Outta Compton”, which told the story of N.W.A. His son O’Shea Jackson Jr. portrayed him in the film. (rtr)

LONDON- Fire engulfed a 24-storey housing block in central London in the early hours on Wednesday, killing at least six people and injuring 70 others in an inferno that trapped residents as they slept. Flames raced through the high-rise Grenfell Tower block of apartments in the north Kensington area after taking hold around 1 a.m. and witnesses reported some residents screaming for help from windows of upper floors and others trying to throw children to safety.

More than 200 firefighters, backed up by 40 fire engines, fought for hours to try to bring the blaze, one of the biggest seen in central London in memory, under control.

By mid-day, London police said six people had been killed and they cautioned the death toll was likely to rise. Police Commander Stuart Cundy said a “recovery operation” could take some time and there could be people in the building who are unaccounted for, though he would not be drawn on a figure.

Fire-fighting crews still had to reach the top four floors of the building where several hundred people

live in 130 apartments. The cause of the fire, which left the tower block a charred, smoking shell, was not immediately known. The block had recently undergone an 8.7 million pound ($11.08 million) refurbishment of the exterior, which included new external cladding, replacement windows and curtain wall facades.

Plumes of black smoke billowed high into the air over the British capital for hours after the blaze broke out. Residents rushed to escape through smoke-filled corridors after being woken up by the smell of burning. London Fire Brigade said the fire engulfed all

floors from the second to the top of the 24-storey block. There were reports that some residents leapt out of windows to escape the flames.

One woman lost two of her six children as she tried to escape from the block, one witness said.
