Hollywood stars back Clinton 2016 bid
LOS ANGELES - Hollywood stars have chorused support for Hillary Clinton’s US presidential campaign, indicating Tinseltown will be firmly behind the former first lady as she targets the White House. Within hours of Clinton confirming her plans to stand in 2016, celebrities including Jennifer Lopez, Scarlett Johansson and Magic Johnson gave a stamp of approval to her bid to become the first female commander-in-chief. “I’m very excited by the news,” singer Jennifer Lopez was quoted as saying by Eonline at Sunday’s MTV Movie Awards in Los Angeles. “I think it’s time for a woman (president)” she added. Basketball legend Johnson, a staunch Democrat, meanwhile took to Twitter to give his support. “I feel @HillaryClinton will be a great President for the American people and she will make sure that everyone has a voice!” Johnson said. “ @ HillaryClinton will fight for the poor, middle class and embrace young people!” Actress Johansson meanwhile suggested Clinton would be battlehardened and more prepared for a second tilt at the White House following her bruising battle with Barack Obama for the Democratic ticket in 2008. “It’s very exciting to see Hillary,” Johansson said. “Now is the right time. She needed to get through what she did to get to this point to run again. Now she’s ready for it. “I think she’s a very good politician,” Johansson told an Access Hollywood reporter at Sunday’s MTV Movie Awards. Lena Dunham, creator and star of HBO’s hit series “Girls” posted an image of Clinton on Instagram scruti-
nizing a cellphone. “This is Hillary reading a text from me that says ‘with you every step of the way, gurl’ #mypresident,” Dunham wrote above the photo. Actress America Ferrera, best known as the star of the sitcom “Ugly Betty” posted a picture on Twitter of her campaigning for Clinton in 2008. “I believed in her then, I believe in her now. @HillaryClinton #mypresident,” she added. Uzo Aduba, one of the stars of award-winning Netflix series “Orange is the New Black,” opted for a one-word message of support, with a Twitter message reading simply: “Hillary.” Singer-songwriter Carole King was similarly sparing in a tweeted message, responding to Clinton’s announcement with the reply: “I’m in.” While support of Hollywood and entertainment industry power players are an important source of campaign fundraising, surveys have shown that the backing of celebrities holds little sway over the the way Americans vote. A 2012 poll for CBS News and Vanity Fair reported that 89 percent of respondents said the celebrity endorsement of a particular candidate made no difference to them when it came to voting. (afp)

NEW YORK — For the first time, a female director will kick off the Cannes Film Festival. The festival announced Monday that “La Tete Haute,” a French drama directed by Emmanuelle Bercot, will open the 68th Cannes Film Festival on May 13. The film is about the upbringing of a juvenile delinquent and stars Catherine Deneuve. The French Riviera festival has sometimes been criticized for not programming more
female-directed films. Cannes head Thierry Fremaux said the choice “is a clear reflection of our desire to see the festival start with a different piece, which is both bold and moving.” Joel and Ethan Coen will preside over this year’s jury. The film slate will be announced Thursday, adding to the already announced out-of-competition entry “Mad Max: Fury Road.” Cannes runs May 13-24. (ap)
INDIO, United States - Madonna startled an audience of tens of thousands by making out with the rapper Drake in an unexpected climax to the Coachella music festival. The pop superstar was not scheduled to appear at the three-day festival in the California desert but walked on stage Sunday night as Drake performed a song named after her -- in which the rapper boasts that he can make a girl as big as Madonna if she gives in to his advances. Madonna performed two of her own songs including “Human Nature” before bending over a seated Drake for a prolonged, full-tongue kiss as her long, blonde locks fell upon him. “Bitch, I’m Madonna!” she declared as she walked off, an allusion to one of the new songs by the singer who drew headlines a decade ago for a televised kiss with Britney Spears. Madonna’s intervention brought new life to a performance that might otherwise have been forgotten by Drake, who -- in a rarity for the tightly run festival -- started nearly half an hour late. The Toronto rapper opened with pyrotechnics and “Legend,” his swaggering account of his own fame, and informed the crowd that he had just spoken to his mother, who urged him to deliver his best performance. Madonna and Drake’s locked lips were not the only sensual scene Sunday at Coachella, which is as renowned for skimpy clothing in the desert heat as it is for its trendsetting musical
selection. Florence Welch, singer of the soulful British indie band Florence and the Machine, invited fans to remove her clothing until she pranced in the crowd with only a bra. Among the emerging artists who played on Coachella’s final day were the Danish electropop singer Mo, who overcame technical problems to deliver an impassioned set in which she twice went crowd-surfing, and the Welsh-born pop singer Marina and the Diamonds, who had a giant crowd singing along to her advice song, “How To Be a Heartbreaker.” Belgian singer Stromae, a sensation in the French-speaking world, delivered a riveting performance of his danceable yet intelligent pop tunes. In an unusual scene for a non-Englishlanguage artist, hundreds of US fans sang along as best they could with Stromae on songs such as “Papaoutai” with its refrain -- “Papa, ou t’es,” or “Where are you, Dad?” The song, which like much of Stromae’s work brings in African musical influences, revolves around his absent father who died in the 1994 Rwandan genocide. Stromae showed a flair akin to theater acting as he kept the crowd engaged over a 50-minute set. For “Formidable,” about a boozy catharsis after heartbreak, Stromae pretended to be stumbling drunk and had his bandmates carry him off stage. (afp)

Tourists flocked at Sanur Beach during holiday season. The culture based tourism of Bali cannot be compared to the kinds of tourism that are growing in other countries.
Bali tourism, different from others countries
MANGUPURA - Tomy Winata’s plan to reclaim Benoa Bay in order to enhance Bali tourism and make it more competitive with the tourism of other countries, is not an appropriate attitude according Chairman of the Indonesian Tourism Intellectuals (ICPI) of Bali and lecturer at Udayana University, Putu Anom. The culture based tourism of Bali cannot be compared to the kinds of tourism that are growing in other countries. “The development of tourism in Bali must not be equated with the development of tourism in other places, such as Jakarta or Singapore,” said Anom. According to Putu Anom and others, the uniqueness of Bali’s natural and socio-cultural landscape must remain the icons that motivate travelers to come and visit- travelers looking for something different that what they find at home. “Travelers
visit Bali because they are curious to see things that look different from where they come from,” he said. He asserted that Balinese people are not allergic to investors who want to support the development of tourism here. However, potential investors must abide by the concept of Tri Hita Karana (three causes of happiness) to realize harmony in life. In addition, investors must adhere to Regional Bylaws (Perda) on Cultural Tourism (inspired by the noble values of Hinduism), to the
provincial spatial plan (RTRWP) for Bali, as well as to county or municipal spatial plans. “In principle, we do not reject the presence of investors wishing to build in Bali, but the investors must build with an emphasis on equitable development, and development spread across all regions, not just concentrated in South Bali,” he added. South Bali is already overcapacity, and this fact raises many issues. Anom is adament that the government issued moratorium on
further construction in South Bali, must be judicially implemented by the government’s executive branch, with the consent of the legislative, as decision makers of public policy. “The People’s representatives must carefully absorb and implement the aspirations of all levels of society”. “Currently the people of Bali are awaiting the confirmation of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), who won the election, to see if they will reject or approve the Benoa Bay reclamation plan,” he said. The party with the bull’s head logo will likely be advising the president regarding strategic policies, particularly public policy that concerns the public sector.
“Certainty and assertiveness are required by Bali’s Council of Regional Representatives of the House of Representatives, the Bali House, and Regents and Mayor across Bali, regarding whether they accept or reject the Benoa Bay reclamation project, especially if they plan on running in the next elections,” said Anom, the academic from Kapal village, Mengwi-Badung.
