LOS ANGELES — Jennifer Lopez has added a couple of more trophies to her block. The pop star and “American Idol” judge was honored Saturday night at the 25th annual GLAAD Media Awards with the Vanguard Award, which lauds efforts to increase visibility and understanding of the gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender community. In addition to being an outspoken advocate for gay rights, Lopez serves as executive producer of the ABC Family series “The Fosters,” which centers on a lesbian

couple raising their children. “The Fosters” also won the award for outstanding drama series. Other winners at the Beverly Hilton Hotel ceremony included NBC’s soap opera “Days of Our Lives” for daily drama, Fuse’s “Big Freedia: Queen of Bounce” for reality program, Tegan and Sara for music artist, and “Young Avengers” for comic book. “Bridegroom” and “Call Me Kuchu” tied for the outstanding documentary trophy. Laverne Cox, who stars in the Netflix women’s prison drama “Orange is the New Black,” was presented with the Stephen F. Kolzak Award, which

is given to a gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender member of the entertainment community. Previous recipients include Wanda Sykes, Rufus Wainwright, Melissa Etheridge, Ellen DeGeneres and Ian McKellen. Norman Lear, the veteran producer of such groundbreaking TV comedies as “All in the Family” and “Maude,” was honored with the Pioneer Award.

With $41.4M, ‘Captain America’ holds off ‘Rio 2’ Associated Press Writer

NEW YORK — “Captain America” continued to flex its Marvel muscle at the global box office, as “The Winter Soldier” took in $41.4 million domestically and $60.6 million overseas. The strong second-week performance for the Walt Disney release in North America was enough to narrowly edge 20th Century Fox’s “Rio 2” in a springtime battle of sequels. The animated Amazon jungle tale “Rio 2” debuted with $39 million, according to studio estimates Sunday, almost exactly the opening weekend total of the 2011 Oscar-nominated original. But “Captain America” has grown considerably in stature since its 2011 original, “The First Avenger.” With a

global cumulative total of nearly $477 million, “The Winter Soldier” has (in two weeks domestically, three weeks internationally) easily surpassed the $370 million total of “The First Avenger.” For a superhero whose costume is draped with the U.S. flag, Captain America (played by Chris Evans) has proven particularly popular abroad. The international appeal of such a traditionally patriot figure was once doubted. “The traditional rules just don’t apply anymore. It’s really about that Marvel

brand,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for box-office tracker Rentrak. “’Captain America’ can play in Peoria just as well as Hong Kong.” Two other new releases opened in a distant third and fourth place. The low-budget supernatural horror film “Oculus” took in $12 million for Relativity Media. The football drama “Draft Day,” starring Kevin Costner and directed by Ivan Reitman, debuted weakly with $9.8 million. Made with the cooperation of the National Football League, the Lionsgate release is the second movie this year, along with the thriller “3 Days to Kill,” to attempt to restore the 59-year-old Costner to leading man status. The overall box office for the year is up more than 7 percent over 2013’s record box-office haul. The month of April has been propelled especially by the summerstyle release of “The Winter Soldier” and a number of less likely successes. With $39.5 million domestically, the Wes Anderson caper “The Grand Budapest Hotel” has performed exceptionally in a gradual release by Fox Searchlight. The independently released Christian film “God’s Not Dead,” from Freestyle Releasing, has made a whopping $40.7 million in four weeks. Just holding in the top five was Lionsgate’s teen science-fiction franchisestarter “Divergent,” which added $7.5 million in its fourth week to bring its cumulative total to $124.9 million. Lionsgate announced Friday that the third installment in the series (a sequel for 2015 is already in the works) will be split into two releases. The final book in Veronica Roth’s young-adult trilogy, “Allegiant,” will be made into two installments, one to open in March 2016, the other in March 2017.

LOS ANGELES - The second installment of “The Hunger Games” saga dominated the MTV Movie Awards Sunday, with a best-film trophy and best actor awards for Josh Hutcherson and Jennifer Lawrence. Hutcherson accepted the movie of the year trophy on behalf of “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” while paying tribute to Philip Seymour Hoffman, who died in February and played the role Plutarch Heavensbee in the dystopian film series.

“I know that if Phillip were here, he would really think that this is very cool,” Hutcherson said. Hutcherson also took home the trophy for best male performance, while co-star Jennifer Lawrence, who was not present, won for best female.

Both also won in 2012 for the first movie in the series, and Lawrence had previously won in 2013 for “Silver Linings Playbook.” The MTV Movie Awards, hosted by comedian Conan O’Brien in Los Angeles, were based on public voting. The ceremony, famous for its off-the-wall award categories, passed out accolades for best kiss, best shirtless performance and best “#wtf moment,” among others. Leonardo DiCaprio won best “#wtf moment” for a scene from

“The Wolf of Wall Street,” in which his drugged-out character drags himself to his car, unable to walk. Best shirtless performance was won by Zac Efron, who had his shirt ripped off in a clearly staged stunt while he accepted the award for a bare-chested scene in “That Awkward Moment.” Studios use the ceremony -- which falls after the winter’s Golden Globe and Oscar awards -- to promote forthcoming summer blockbusters. The night’s young target audi-

ence was hit with trailers and appearances by stars such as Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who presented a trophy and will appear in “Godzilla,” out this May. Among the evening’s other winners were Jared Leto, Mark Wahlberg, Channing Tatum, Rihanna, Brad Pitt, Mila Kunis and Orlando Bloom. Other contenders for movie of the year were “12 Years a Slave,” “American Hustle,” “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” and “The Wolf of Wall Street.”
