LOS ANGELES — Kim Kardashian West is opening up about being held at gunpoint during a jewelry heist in Paris last year.

In a preview of next week’s “Keeping Up with the Kardashians,” Kardashian West recalls seeing the gun “as clear as day.” Kardashian West emotionally describes the episode to her sisters in the clip. She says she thought there was “no way out” of the situation.

Kardashian West wasn’t physically harmed during the October incident. Ten suspects have been charged in connection with the case.

Britain’s Ed Sheeran storms U.S. Billboard charts

NEW YORK - Ed Sheeran stormed the U.S. charts on Monday, taking the top spot on the Billboard 200 with his new album “Divide” and also topping the digital songs chart with lead single “Shape of You.” The British singer-songwriter sold an overwhelming 451,000 units of “Divide” in its debut week, giving him the biggest U.S. sales week for any album so far this year.

His U.S. success follows an even bigger start for “Divide” in his native Britain, where Sheeran, 26, had the fastest selling album by a solo male artist in British chart history on Friday.

The singer also made news this week when the makers of HBO TV series “Game of Thrones”

announced he would be making a guest star appearance in the upcoming seventh season of the fantasy adventure, which arrives in July.

The Billboard 200 album chart tallies units from album sales, song sales (10 songs equal one album) and streaming activity (1,500 streams equal one album).

Sales of rock band Metallica’s album “Hardwired... To SelfDestruct” jumped more than 200 percent to take the No. 2 spot on the Billboard 200 with 81,000 units sold for the week. The jump followed a promotional deal linked to the band’s upcoming U.S. tour.

Last week’s top spot, Atlanta rapper Future’s “HNDRXX” album, slipped to No. 5.

On the digital songs chart, which measures online singles sales, Sheeran’s “Shape of You” sold another 115,000 units for the week,

nine weeks after its release. Sheeran also saw his new single “Perfect” take the No. 8 spot. (rtr)

DENPASAR - Streptococcus suis meningitis (MSS) cases have emerged previously. However, the cases were sporadic or only happened once in a while and did not cause outbreaks. “At Sanglah Hospital, the case is also sporadic, emerging once in a while. However, it has not been found any MSS in children so far,” said a Neural Pediatrician Consultant of Sanglah Hospital, Dr. I Gusti Ngurah Made Suwarba.

He continued that MSS can affect all ages. However, the age group having the great potential to be infected by MSS is the adult age group because it has started eating pork and lawar. In general, children under five years are prone to meningitis but rarely affected

by MSS as it is transmitted through pork. Probably, the toddlers rarely eat pork, especially lawar.

He explained that meningitis is brain membrane inflammation. In the meantime, if the brain is infected, it is called encephalitis. The cause of meningitis varies. One of them is bacterium. “If caused by bacterium, it called bacterial meningitis and if caused by virus, it is called viral meningitis,” he explained. Streptococcus suis bacterium is commensal in pigs. This means the bacteria do exist in pigs, but do not

always cause disease to pig. However, the bacterium can make pigs sick if pig’s stamina is poor.

To date, there is no evidence supporting the existence of the vectors of Streptococcus suis bacteria. So, the bacterial infection is believed to happen through the part of the pig, especially not well done pork. Then, it is consumed by humans. “Japanese encephalitis (JE) is clearly transmitted by Culex mosquito where the mosquito bites pig having been infected by JE virus. Then, the mosquitoes carry JE virus in the body and bite humans,” he concluded.

He was confident if pork is cooked well or fried thoroughly, the bacteria contained in the pig will die. “The suspicious thing is the lawar prepared with raw blood,” he said. Meanwhile, if frozen, he

was not sure if the bacteria die. If frozen, some bacteria can be transformed to defend themselves. Besides, he was not confident if Balinese spicy seasoning (basa wayah) can kill bacteria. Bacteria can only be killed by hot temperature, not spicy seasoning that makes burning sensation in the mouth or lips.

In Bali, the number of meningitis and encephalitis cases in children is almost the same. In the meningitis or encephalitis, histopathologically it is actually meningoencephalitis, both brain membrane and the brain are affected by the infection because anatomically they are located very close to each other between the brain and the bran membranes,” he explained.

Meningitis case has no impact on pig sales in Bangli

BANGLI - The emergence of a number of meningitis cases caused by bacteria Streptococcus suis Meningitis (MSS) transmitted through pigs to humans in some regions in Bali such as Badung and Tabanan does not overly affect the sales of pork in Bangli. This was revealed by a pig farmer from Galiran hamlet, Jehem, Tembuku, Jro Mangku Puseh, on Monday (Mar. 13).

Jro Mangku Puseh said that he has heard about the MSS case afflicting to some people outside the Bangli region like Badung and Tabanan. Moreover, this MSS case has emerged since around 2012. However, the MSS bacterium just affects human this time.

“Indeed MSS have appeared since long time ago.

However, it only transmits to humans this year. Previously, there has been no transmission to humans,” said Jro Mangku Puseh when visited at his pigsty.

Jro Mangku Puseh asserted that although this case has been widespread among the public, it does not significantly affect the sales of pigs. He added that until these days the sales of pig are still running normally considering that so far it has not been found any pigs infected by the MSS. “Sales of pork are still running smoothly. Although there are MSS cases, they do not greatly affect the sales of pigs. Moreover, regular customers from Klungkung and Kintamani still purchase pigs here,” he said.

In the meantime, another pig farmer from Sala hamlet, Abuan, I Ketut Mupu, said that even though there are MSS cases outside the region, the sales of pig in Bangli remains stable. However, he did not know the price of pork in the future whether it will be influenced by the MSS case or not.

“So far, the sales remain stable. It is a blow to pig farmers. Farmers just enjoyed the previous price hike of pork in the pigsty at IDR 26,000 per kilogram rising to IDR 28,000 per kilogram. Hopefully, this case will not cause the prices of pork to drop again,” said Mupu.

He said although there is potential to be infected

by MSS, the possibility is small. He added the prone areas to get infected by the MSS are Badung, North Gianyar and Tabanan because they are in the crossing region of the entrance of pigs from outside Bali. “To prevent pigs from being infected by the MSS, every week we have to spray the pigsty with disinfectant and maintain the sanitation. If it is clean, the opportunity to be exposed to MSS will become very small,” said Mupu. (kmb41)

People advised not to consume raw pork

DENPASAR - People’s representatives in the Bali parliament urged the community to stop eating raw pork or raw pig’s blood. This is meant to avoid the streptococcus suis meningitis (MSS) bacterium from entering the body.

“When consuming pork, it should be well cooked first. Do no longer consume raw pork,” said Chairman of Commission IV of the Bali House of Representatives, Nyoman Parta, when confirmed on Monday (Mar. 13).

Similar suggestion was also delivered by a member of Commission III, I Wayan Adnyana. Moreover, in the near future, the Hindus in Bali will celebrate Nyepi as well as Galungan and Kuningan. Consumption will certainly increase because people always slaughter pigs during the holidays.

“MSS bacterium is harmful in raw meat. There are people just chopping raw meat, and it is then poured with boiling water. Surely, the bacteria do not die. However, if cooked properly, the bacteria will die,” said this Democratic Party politician.

Adnyana asked related agencies, namely the health agency and livestock agency to disseminate information about the hazards of MSS bacteria so that people will not be confused. In addition, it should also be explained about the characteristics of pigs having been infected by the MSS bacteria.

“When slaughtering, please carefully observe about the characteristics. It is said that any wounds of the body that has direct contact will be hazardous because they can be exposed to the bacteria,”

he said.

Meanwhile, Spokesperson of the provincial government of Bali, I Dewa Gede Mahendra Putra, urged people to purchase pork at official counter so that it can be ascertained if the pork has been hygienically slaughtered. Moreover, when processing the pork, make sure the hands are not injured or wrap the wound properly when processing the pork. People are asked to be proactive and sensitive to the surrounding environment.

“If in the neighborhood there are breeders whose pigs are sick, please be informed not to sell it to pork collector. Similarly, make sure that all the dishes made from pork we eat have been cooked well done,” he added.

Corresponding to the information of the Bali health agency, said Mahendra, the MSS belongs to acute bacterial zoonotic meningitis whose transmission occurs from pigs to humans. The transmission is through pork products such as fresh blood, intestines, offal and infected meat. Additionally, the abrasion when processing infected pork also potentially transmits the disease.

Clinical symptoms of the MSS include fever or having a record of fever, altered consciousness, stiff neck and headache. It often causes neural deafness of moderate, severe and bilateral level.

“The head of health agency also informed that the MSS incubation period is a few hours up to 14 days after eating infected raw or undercooked pork products such as the red lawar or one of Balinese delicacies using raw blood and komoh or clear soup,” he said. (kmb32)

Making autonomous car play, Intel offers $15B for Mobileye

DETROIT — Computer chip maker Intel paid handsomely for a piece of the next big thing Monday as it offered more than $15 billion for Mobileye, an Israeli company at the forefront of autonomous vehicle technology.

The purchase, scheduled to close by year’s end, creates another major player in self-driving technology as traditional automakers and tech companies vie to put the cars into public use. Most companies have predicted autonomous vehicles will be carrying people in the next three-to-five years.

The big investment by Intel validates predictions that autonomous cars will someday come in large numbers, signifying a sea change in the way we all get around, said Timothy Carone, a Notre Dame University professor who has written about the future of automation. “Major players are finding ways finding ways to position themselves for a change as seminal as the personal computer revolution,” he said.

Jerusalem-based Mobileye, which makes software that processes information from cameras and other car sensors to decide where the cars should steer, has products on just about

every automaker’s autonomous test fleet. The combination with Intel adds hardware, more software expertise and data centers that the companies say will hasten deployment of autonomous technology, including wider use of automatic emergency braking and other technologies that already are on the roads.

Automakers and some technology companies are testing autonomous vehicles in California, Michigan and a few other states. Mobileye has partnerships with many of them, including testing cars with Intel and BMW. The Mobileye deal will help put Intel in the driver’s seat in terms of supplying vital parts of autonomous vehicles, said IHS Markit analyst Akhilesh Kona. Besides Mobileye’s technology, Intel is gaining access to major automakers and parts suppliers, Kona said. “They have captured a piece of what should be a fast-growing market.”

Intel and Mobileye are targeting an array of sensors and camera systems that are expected to generate annual sales of $10 billion by 2022, quintupling from about $2 billion this year, IHS estimated. Mobileye controls about 70 percent of the world market for driver assistance systems such as

IHS expects as many as 21 million autonomous vehicles to be sold by the year 2035.

But there are still a number of obstacles to overcome.

Companies still haven’t aren’t certain how the cars will drive in snow or other bad weather, and it will be difficult for cars to be programmed to handle numerous local traffic customs. Also, no one really knows yet when the cars will be safe enough to remove human backup drivers.

The rise of mobile devices caused a decline in the personal computer market and undercut Intel’s growth and influence in the technology business. Now Intel is expanding into other potentially fertile fields.

Besides setting its sights on the still-nascent driverless car market, Intel also has been investing in wearable computers, such as smartwatches, as well as drones.

The companies said Monday’s deal combines Mobileye’s software with Intel’s hardware, data centers and its own software, giving automakers a one-stop place to shop for autonomous systems.

“This acquisition essentially merges the intelligent eyes of the autonomous car with the intelligent brain that actually drives the car,” Intel CEO Brian Krzanich wrote in a note to employees.

The deal moves Intel-Mobileye to at least parity with Google’s Waymo, Uber Technologies and car companies for autonomous car leadership, Carone said. It’s likely to pressure competitors into signing more deals, he added.

The acquisition should have little short-term impact on competitors such as Autoliv and Continental, and Intel and Mobileye already are working with supplier Delphi and BMW to test cars, Jefferies analyst Ashik Kurian wrote in a note to investors.

But in the long-term as the market moves toward more autonomous vehicles, the hookup “confirms our concern about the emergence of new large and well-capitalized competitors” threatening auto suppliers, Kurian wrote.

Intel Corp. will pay $63.54 for each share of Mobileye N.V., a 34 percent premium to its Friday closing price. That’s below Mobileye’s record high closing price of $64.14 in August 2015 after Morgan Stanley raised its target price on the shares to $80. Mobileye NV’s stock closed Monday up 28 percent to $60.62. Intel shares fell 2 percent to $35.16.

The boards of both companies still have to approve the transaction. The companies put the equity value of the deal at $15.3 billion.

BRUSSELS - High-tech crimes, such as document fraud, money laundering and online trading in illegal goods, are at the root of almost all serious criminality, Europe’s police agency said on Thursday.

“These cross-cutting criminal threats enable and facilitate most, if not all, other types of serious and organised crime,” such as drugs and people trafficking, Europol said in a study of organised crime that it publishes every four years.

So-called “ransomware”, which blocks a person or company’s computer until a fee is paid to unlock it, has become a major concern.

But traditional crimes also now rely increasingly on new technology, such as the drug trade’s use of drones, and burglars using computers to scout neighbourhoods online and track social media posts to see when people are away

from home.

Europol says there are some 5,000 international crime groups under investigation, with members from more than 180 nationalities.

Drug trafficking remained the largest criminal market in the European Union, generating some 24 billion euros ($25 billion) of profit per year.

People smuggling has become more lucrative as wars and unrest in the Middle East and Africa have pushed record number of people to try to reach Europe, with 510,000 illegal crossings into the EU in 2016.

“Nearly all of the irregular migrants arriving in the EU along these routes use the services offered by criminal networks at some point during their journey,” Europol said. (rtr)

Thai parliament discusses tourism issues

DENPASAR - Tourism in Thailand draws larger numbers of visitors than Bali tourism does. However the land of the white elephant is still looking to Bali to learn how to promote tourism. Members ot Thailand’s parliament even revealed that Thailand and Bali face similar issues in terms of traffic congestion and transportation-based online applications.

“My arrival to Indonesia is aimed at improving ties with the government of Indonesia. I first made a visit to Bali’s local government and want to learn how to promote tourism as Bali is the most attractive destination for travellers”, said President of the National Legislative Assembly of the Kingdom of Thailand, H.E Prof. Pornpetch Wichitcholchai, during his visit to the Bali House of Representatives, on Sunday (Mar. 12).

According to Wichitcholchai, Thailand and Bali have similar cultures. In addition, Bali also has many beautiful beaches. He added that he hopes that they can work on cooperating in the tourism sector. “We also have the same problems as Bali in the matter of transportation and traffic congestion because many unregistered vehicles are still taking unfair business advantages” he added in attendance along with nine other members of parliament (MP).

Member of Commission II of the Bali House of Representatives, A.A. Ngurah Adhi Ardhana, said that Bali put has great hope in the development and advancement of tourism based on tradition and culture.

Deputy Chairman of the Bali House of Representatives, I Nyoman Sugawa Korry, added that Bali has a very strong tradition so people respect and appreciate their culture. Bali is the biggest foreign exchange earner in the field of tourism.

Chairman of the Bali House of Representatives, Nyoman Adi Wiryatama, said that Bali not only has problems with traffic congestion and online transportation, but has also been seeing a continued decline in the length of stay of visitors.

“We have a problem with our tourism, especially regarding shorter lengths of stay, that are down to an average 3 days. Of course, we share this experience of how to make visitors linger longer”, he said.

Wiryatama added that Bali really needs to learn from Thailand related to preparing tourism-supporting infrastructure. Thailand has managed to establish a good airport, seen though the city has the same problems.

“In addition to having beautiful views, Thailand also has culture.

Merta added that promotional activities outside the region are especially to attract domestic travellers targeting West Java, Central Java, East Java and Greater Jakarta. These four regions are considered potential to bring in travellers during holiday feasts.

Meanwhile, to bring in foreign travelers, it has a plan to do direct promotion to Singapore, Malaysia and Berlin, Germany. “With the budget of only IDR 80 million, we can only do promotion outside the region twice. We cannot make promotion overseas,” he said.

According to Merta, promotional activities outside the region are very effective to attract travellers to come to Bangli. With the promotion, the district government can interact directly with travellers and explain in

BANGLI - Recently there has been an increase in the number of basket weavers in Kintamani, causing tighter competition. Artisans therefore need to be aware of market needs and more active in seeking out and maintaining their customer base.

One basket artisan from Pengotan hamlet, Pengotan, Kintamani named Ni Ketut Porsi, said on Sunday (Mar. 12) that marketing competiton has become more difficult lately as more and more people have started selling baskets in the region. She has seen many of her customers turn to other baset makers.

“In the past, I had many customers and made a lot of sales, mostly because my neighbour and I were the only artisans making baskets around here. Now there are many basket artisans in Pengotan”, she said.

She has therefore seen a significant decline in the sales and now has to walk around with her baskets seeking out customers.

“I have to bring my baskets to Songan village now. If I just wait for buyers here, it may take a long time to sell a basket. I do not make much profit as I sell a set of 10 baskets for IDR 10,000”, she explained.

She sells her baskets all over Bangli and sometimes in Denpasar and Bading as well. However she cannot deliver to places outside of kintamani everyday as it depends on her orders.

“My big baskets that are commonly sold in Kintamani are usually used to hold tomatoes, cabbage, tangerine et cetera. Meanwhile, the baskets that I sell in Denpasar are used as waste baskets. Unfortunately, most farmers

BANGLI - The budget managed by the Bangli tourism and culture agency to promote tourism in 2017 is quite minimal. Moreover, for promotional activities to other regions, the agency only gets quota of IDR 80 million. This was recognized by the Promotion Division Head of the Bangli Tourism and Culture Agency, I Wayan Merta, when confirmed on Sunday (Mar. 12).

Merta said that when compared to last year, the budget of tourism promotion in 2017 shows a decrease.

Although Bali in general and Kintamani in particular has been well known, the promotion must remain to be intensively conducted. GIANYAR - Thousands of pilgrims thronged Penataran Sasih Temple at Pejeng to say prayers in a series of the peak of the pedudusan ritual that coincided with the full moon of Balinese ninth month on Sunday (Mar. 12). Related to the umanis padudusan, the government of Gianyar offered bhakti penganyar ritual on Monday (Mar. 13).

As seen, thousands of the Hindus from all over Bali looked to attend the peak of the ritual officiated over by Ida Pedanda Geriya Sanding Lingsir, Pejeng. All the pilgrims looked to perform their worship solemnly. Due to crowded pilgrims, the other pilgrims should be willing to pray in the middle courtyard.

In a series of the ritual, on Sunday night was performed the Rejang dance, wayang dog and Sidakarya mask. Meanwhile, the following day, a series of the umanis padudusan, the government of Gianyar offered the bhakti penganyar. This ritual started around 10:00 and was officiated over by Ida Pedanda Wayahan Bun from Griya Sanur, Pejeng.

The nganyarin ritual was attended by Deputy Regent of Gianyar, Made Mahayastra, with the leaders of the Gianyar agencies, Chairman of the Gianyar House of Representatives, Wayan Tagel, Deputy Chairman of the Gianyar House of Representatives, Made Jata, and legislators of Gianyar, PHDI Gianyar well as employees of Gianyar district.

Amidst the pilgrims, there seemed the chief of Jero Kuta customary village, Pejeng, Tjokorda Gde Putra Pemayun, accompanied by a number of ritual committee members and hamlet chief throughout Jero-Kuta, Pejeng. (kmb35)

However, the environmental sanitation in the region remains to become a problem and needs continuous handling both by the government and management. This was conveyed by the Secretary of the Association of Indonesia Tours and Travel Agencies (ASITA) Bali, Putu Winastra, on Monday (Mar. 13).

This tourism player from Undisan village, Tembuku, Bangli, mentioned that the interest of travelers to visit Pemuteran area is high enough. It is not only enabled by a number of tourism facilities, but also by clean environment, so as to give the sense of comfort. “If we pay attention, sanitation remains an issue in the area. Necessarily, it has to be really free from plastic waste,” he said.

Aside from Pemuteran, similar condition still happens in the Lovina area. In the future, it needs to be taken seriously, both by the district government and local management. “This needs to be addressed,” he said.

To support the tourism development, Winastra considered it necessary to improve the quality of human resources. All the ranks must qualify for the standards. “Sometimes the human resources are vulnerable to friction. This aspect should get serious attention as well,” he said.

On the other hand, this former Deputy Chairman of the ASITA Bali mentioned that tourist attractions in Buleleng also need maximal promotion. He also gave a signal to be ready to cooperate. “For example, Buleleng is now offering the Bali Aga tourism village. District government can take us to the location and let us know. Later on, we will also promote it,” he said.

Especially regarding the tourist attraction managed by the natural resources conservation agency (BKSDA), he criticized that the rate increase lacked dissemination. Such conditions often caused travelers to be surprised. “For instance, the increase rate of admission fee to Menjangan Island and surrounding areas should be disseminated first.

MANGUPURA - Street lighting in Kuta and South Kuta remains to get criticism. For instance, most street lighting in the area of Jimbaran and Nusa Dua are totally dead.

Another case is on Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai Kuta, where many poles are installed in skewed position. Surely it is very dangerous for passing road users.

A member of Badung parliament from Kuta constituency, I Gusti Anom Gumanti, said that the complaints against the street lighting occur almost every year.

Moreover, the conditions of street lighting at some road sections are newly procured. The poles in rather skewed position and lack of ornamentation are also criticized by public as considered to have less aesthetic. The partner working on it is considered unprofessional. “If the poles are skewed, it means the partner is incapable of working on it properly. Therefore,

the agency must firmly choose a professional contractor,” he said.

He also asked why the street lighting continues to become a problem from long time ago. He suggested if the street lighting does not function properly, it should be replaced immediately. Moreover, the complaint against the street lighting on the main roads must be given priority. “We must check in the field, and then we will hold a working meeting with relevant agencies,” he added.

Relevant agency is asked to examine the problems occurred in the field. It should be noted to ensure if the street lighting can work optimally. SEOUL - North Korea warned the United States on Tuesday of “merciless” attacks if an aircraft carrier strike group led by the USS Carl Vinson, which is joining South Korean forces for exercises, infringes on its sovereignty or dignity.

North Korea, which has alarmed its neighbours with two nuclear tests and a string of missile launches since last year, said the arrival of the U.S. strike group was part of a “reckless scheme” to attack it.

“If they infringe on the DPRK’s sovereignty and dignity even a bit, its army will launch merciless ultraprecision strikes from ground, air, sea and underwater,” the North’s state news agency KCNA said.

North Korea’s official name is the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

“On March 11 alone, many enemy carrier-based aircraft flew along a course near territorial air and waters of the DPRK to stage drills of dropping bombs and making surprise attacks on the ground targets of its army,” KCNA said.

A U.S. Navy spokesman said the Carl Vinson was on a regular, scheduled deployment to the region during which it would take part in exercises with the forces of ally South Korea.

Last week, North Korea fired four ballistic missiles into the sea off Japan in response to annual U.S.-South Korea military drills, which the North

sees as preparation for war.

The murder in Malaysia last month of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s estranged half-brother has added to a sense of urgency to efforts to handle North Korea.

U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is due to make his first visit to South Korea on Friday. Last week, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations said President Donald Trump’s administration was reevaluating its North Korea strategy and “all options are on the table”.

CHINESE OPPOSITION Compounding regional tension, China is vehemently opposed to the deployment in South Korea of an advanced U.S. anti-missile system.

The United States and South Korea say the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense anti-missile system is for defence against North Korea, but China fears its powerful radar can probe deep into its territory and compromise its security.

The United States began to deploy the system a week ago, a day after North Korea launched its latest four missile tests.

South Korean and U.S. troops began the large-scale joint drills, which are billed as defensive in nature, on March 1.

The exercise last year involved about 17,000 American troops and more than 300,000 South Koreans.

South Korea has said this year’s exercise would be of a similar scale.

The United States has also started to deploy “Gray Eagle” attack drones to South Korea, a U.S. military spokesman said on Monday.

China says the exercises do nothing to ease tension. Last week, it called on North Korea to stop its weapons tests and for South Korea and the United States to stop their drills. A state-run Chinese newspaper said the USS Carl Vinson was taking part in a simulation of a preemptive strike against North Korea’s nuclear and missile facilities.

The drills sent the North “an explicit radical threat”, to which it could not be expected to remain indifferent, the influential Global Times said. North and South Korea were “equally hysterical”, it said.

“The U.S. and South Korea often accuse China of being uncooperative, but the reality is they are uncooperative over China’s mediation,” it said, referring to complaints that China does not do enough to rein in old ally North Korea. (rtr)

SEOUL - The head of South Korea’s Samsung Group, Jay Y. Lee, may be languishing in a jail cell but he is allowed plenty of visitors, which may allow him to play a key role in corporate decisions even if he isn’t running the conglomerate like he did before.

Lee, who didn’t attend last Thursday’s preparatory hearing for his trial on bribery, embezzlement and other charges, is kept well away from other inmates at the Seoul Detention Centre. Some, such as top former presidential advisors, are also defendants in the corruption scandal that led to the removal from office of South Korean President Park Geun-hye on Friday.

Under South Korean regulations, though, Lee can meet any of his battery of attorneys without time limits and as often as he wants during business hours from Monday to Saturday.

One of those lawyers told the first day of what special prosecutors described as potentially “the trial of the century” that Lee denies all charges against him.

Lee, like others in detention centers awaiting trial, is also entitled to one 30-minute visit per day from someone else, including executives from one of Samsung’s affiliates, or at least 12 hours of such meetings a month. At the discretion of the warden of the detention center, he could have additional special meetings in a visiting room that doesn’t have partitions, allowing detainees to review documents and receive phone calls.

By comparison, in the United States, a defendant in federal custody on corporate crime charges

is generally allowed unrestricted access to attorneys during regular business hours but can only receive other visitors for a maximum four hours a month. In the U.S., though, major white collar defendants are usually allowed to post bail so they can live at home before trial.

NO NEED FOR “ALTERNATIVES” South Korean media have photographed former Samsung Group Vice Chairman Choi Geesung and Samsung Electronics Co Ltd President Rhee In-yong visiting Lee following his Feb 17 arrest.

Samsung declined to confirm those visits or comment on the level of Lee’s involvement in management affairs since he was detained.

It did say that he is meeting regularly with his defense team, though declined to be more specific.

In a statement it said: “Mr. Lee’s priority is preparing the legal defense so the truth can be revealed in future court proceedings.”

Samsung hasn’t named a replacement for Lee, who company insiders say did not manage day-today affairs but was instead acting as the key decision maker on major initiatives such as new investments, acquisitions, personnel decisions and restructuring.

“There is no plan B,” said an executive at a Samsung affiliate, who declined to be identified as he was not authorised to speak publicly on the matter. “We believe the vice chairman will be proven innocent, and if he walks free after the first trial there’s no reason to talk about alternatives.” (rtr)

WASHINGTON — For years after the Great Recession ended, investors fretted — sometimes panicked — over the prospect that the Federal Reserve might begin to raise interest rates from record lows. Now? The Fed seems all but sure to raise rates Wednesday for the third time in 15 months and to signal more hikes probably coming. And the response from investors has been something akin to a yawn.

In light of Friday’s jobs report, optimism about Trump’s economic program and other signs that growth may pick up, some economists said they were raising their forecast for the number of rate increases this year from three to perhaps four.

“I think a March rate hike is a fait accompli,” said Sung Won Sohn, an economics professor at California State University, Channel Islands, who expects four rate increases in 2017. “The more important question is: How many more hikes they will give us for the balance of the year?”

If the Fed is no longer unsettling investors with the hint of a forthcoming rate increase, it marks quite a change from the anxiety that prevailed after 2008, when the central bank cut its key rate to a record low and kept it there for seven years. During those years, any slight shift in sentiment about when the Fed might begin raising rates — a step that would lead eventually to higher loan rates for consumers and businesses — was enough to move global markets.

In 2013, then-Chairman Ben Bernanke sent markets into a panic merely by mentioning that the Fed was contemplating slowing the pace of its bond purchases, which it was using then to keep long-term borrowing rates low.

But now, the economy is widely considered sturdy enough to handle modestly higher loan rates. The unemployment rate,

at 4.7 percent, is below the 4.8 percent level the Fed has deemed an indication of full employment. And inflation, which had stayed undesirably low for years, is edging near the 2 percent annual rate that the Fed views as optimal.

And while the broadest gauge of the economy’s health — the gross domestic product — remains well below levels associated with a healthy economy, many analysts say they’re optimistic that Trump’s proposed tax cuts, infrastructure spending increases and deregulation may acceler-

ate growth. Those proposals have lifted the confidence of business executives and offset concerns that investors might otherwise have had about the effects of Fed rate increases.

Yet for the same reason, some caution that if Trump’s program fails to survive Congress intact, concerns will arise that the president’s plans won’t deliver much economic punch.

Investors may start to fret about how steadily higher Fed rates will raise the cost of borrowing and slow spending by consumers and businesses.(ap)

SAN JUAN — A federal control board on Monday said Puerto Rico’s government needs to cut its public pension system by 10 percent, furlough tens of thousands of its workers and eliminate Christmas bonuses if it cannot generate other types of savings amid a nearly decade-long recession.

The seven-member board created by Congress last year to oversee the U.S. territory’s finances voted unanimously to add those measures to a 10-year fiscal plan presented by the island’s governor that the panel approved Monday. The measures will be implemented if the government fails to find other ways to cut

spending and increase revenue.

Board members said the spending cuts will be necessary so the government will have enough funds to pay for essential services such as education, health and public safety.

“Puerto Rico is about to capsize,” said board member David Skeel. “The island is overwhelmed by debt. Puerto Rico is in real danger of running out of money for even the most basic essential services.”

Skeel and other board members who met in New York said the plan calls for everyone on the U.S. territory of 3.4 million people to make

sacrifices.

Gov. Ricardo Rossello, whose government is struggling with nearly $70 billion in public debt that it is seeking to restructure, had resisted some of the board’s cuts, arguing they would fall too heavily on many living in Puerto Rico. He told The Associated Press that he was pleased with the plan and is confident his administration will find ways to head off the furloughs and the elimination of Christmas bonuses.

“That’s my goal,” he said by phone. “We’re taking bold steps to making sure the economy gets jumpstarted. We’re very much well on our way.”(ap)

Why so few are worried about likely Fed rate hike this week Wall Street appears too busy extending the stock market rally that began with President Donald Trump’s election in November, cheered by the prospect of tax cuts, an easing of regulations and higher spending for infrastructure to worry about a rate hike.

Fed watchers, it seems, are more buoyed by expectations for a vigorous economy than worried about whether slightly higher rates might slow growth.

When Chair Janet Yellen and several other Fed officials separately suggested earlier this month that the economy was sturdy enough to withstand a modest raising of loan rates, investors quickly raised their estimate of the probability of a rate hike at the Fed’s meeting this week from around 20 percent to 80 percent.

After Friday’s robust February jobs report — 235,000 added jobs, solid pay gains and a dip in the unemployment rate to 4.7 percent — the likelihood has grown to 95 percent, according to the CME Group, which tracks investor expectations of Fed actions. Yet no one seems very concerned.

“We’re just at a different place now than in 2013 when there was a lot of angst and uncertainty about the economy’s prospects,” said Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody’s Analytics. “Now, the fundamentals of the economy are much better. We are close to full employment and investors feel more comfortable about where we are.”

Water Blow is not a beach because it only has the cliff hit by the waves of the Indian Ocean. As being blocked by a steep cliff, the incoming waves powerfully crash on the rocks and are then blown up. If you make a visit in July, August and September, it is the season of the highest waves reaching up to a height of 20 meters. Visitors really admire it, but do not get too close to the edge of the cliff due to frequent accidents.

In the meantime, the beach in the south of Nusa Dua is relatively deserted so that it is preferred by foreign travelers because there are bars with typical lounge chairs put on the beach. As the beach of Bali in general, the beach of Nusa Dua also has good waves for surfing activities and there are many surfboard rental in the area. Tegaltamu Grand Palace is one of the palaces remaining a descendant of King of Badung I, Kyai Anglurah Tegeh Kori Putu Agung who ruled at Tegal Badung. When there was a civil war at Tegeh Agung Palace (now Griya Jro Agung Tegal at Tegal hamlet, Badung), Kyai Anglurah Putu Agung Tegeh Kori fled to Gianyar area accompanied by 125 loyal followers. At the new location, he then built a palace named the Tegaltamu Palace.

The name Tegaltamu was used to indicate the identity that they were ‘guests’ (tamu in Balinese) of Tegal hamlet evacuating to Gianyar.

The name depicts the history of the founder namely guests originating from Tegal Badung. Refugees going to Tegaltamu have profession as merchant. “As refugees, they do not have any land to grow crops, so that the only job that could be done was becoming the dealer of arts,” said I Gusti Ngurah Pertu Agung, a descendant of Tegaltamu Palace.

Along with the development of Bali tourism, Tegaltamu Palace has been opened as a culture-based tourist destination since 1998 though it has become a tourist destination since the 1970s. Travelers from various countries come to learn Balinese culture such as dancing, playing gamelan music, preparing oblation and chanting. “Many foreigners are learning to dance, reading literature

and making sculptures,” said this alumnus of the Dance Department at the ISI Denpasar.

UK PM May’s hand moves closer to Brexit trigger

LONDON - British Prime Minister Theresa May cleared the final hurdle standing between her and the start of Brexit negotiations on Monday after parliament passed legislation giving her the power to start the EU exit process.

Members of the lower house of parliament voted to throw out changes to the bill made by the upper house earlier this month, after the government argued it needed freedom to operate without restriction to get a good deal.

Despite an attempt by the Liberal Democrats in the unelected upper chamber, the House of Lords, to re-introduce the conditions, the Lords also went on to approve the legislation unamended late on Monday.

“We are now on the threshold of the most important negotiation for our country in a generation,” Brexit minister David Davis said in a statement.

“So we will trigger Article 50 by the end of this month as planned and deliver an outcome that works in the interests of the whole of the UK.” The bill will now be sent to the queen for symbolic approval which could be granted as early as Tuesday morning, leaving May ready to start a two-year negotiation period, as set out in Article 50 of the EU’s Lisbon Treaty.

May’s spokesman hinted on Tuesday, however, that she might do so closer to the end of the month.

Her task in negotiating Britain’s EU exit was complicated on Monday by Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon demanding a new independence referendum, to be held in late 2018 or early 2019, once the Brexit terms are clearer.

In recent weeks, the government had lost two key votes in the House of Lords which added conditions to the bill to demand that May guarantee the rights of EU nationals living in Britain and give lawmakers more powers to reject the final terms she reaches with the EU. But May succeeded in warding off a potential rebellion from a handful of pro-EU Conservatives in the lower chamber, the House of Commons, where May only has a slim majority.

The Commons voted by 335 to 287 to reject the condition on EU nationals’ rights, and by 331 to 286 to reject the condition giving parliament a greater say on the final deal.

Earlier May’s spokesman said parliament would be involved in the Brexit process.

Fillon’s campaign relaunch marred by gifts of luxury suits PARIS - Francois Fillon outlined his plans to streamline the state’s role in France’s economy on Monday as he sought to revive his faltering presidential campaign, but again found himself on the defensive, this time over expensive suits he accepted as gifts.

With six weeks to go until the first round of voting, the former prime minister who was once favourite to win the presidency is battling to rally supporters and keep his centre-right alliance on his side after allegations of financial impropriety.

In a blitz of media interviews and a news conference, Fillon, an open admirer of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, spelled out his plans to reinvigorate France’s regulation-laden economy.

“I want to make 100 billion euros ($107 billion) of savings over five years and reduce by 500,000 the number of public sector jobs,” he said at the news conference.

“My programme is based on an ambition to make France a great political and economic power.”

Once again, however, Fillon’s attempts to reset his flagging campaign were troubled by potentially damaging stories of high living that sit awkwardly with his claim at his party’s primary last November to be beyond reproach ethically.

The Journal du Dimanche newspaper on Sunday reported that Fillon had received close to 50,000 euros worth of suits and clothing since 2012.

Fillon acknowledged a friend had given him two suits in February this year, adding: “and so what”.

He gave no further details on the provider of the gift and said the story was proof of a campaign to wreck his presidential bid.

“I cannot see this as anything other than a manhunt,” he told Europe 1 radio.

Fillon’s new offensive comes two days before he is due to meet judges investigating the hundreds of thousands of euros of taxpayers’ money that he paid to his wife Penelope and his children for work they did for him.

He reiterated policies to end the 35-hour working week, a move that would be fiercely opposed

by France’s muscular unions, and gradually raise the retirement age to 65 from 62 at present.

His updated manifesto also includes a pledge to demand lawmakers disclose whether they employ family members as staff.

An opinion poll released on Monday again showed Fillon thrown out of the presidential race in the first round, taking 20 percent of the vote to Macron’s 25 percent and Le Pen’s 27 percent.

Police still investigating nine suspected terrorists nabbed in Sulawesi JAKARTA - Police are still investigating the nine suspected terrorists nabbed last week by police in Toli Toli and Parigi, Central Sulawesi.

Boy said the nine are still in the process of interrogation by police investigators.

Indian Ocean to be conflict of interest among big countries JAKARTA - Deputy of Maritime Sovereignty at Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs, Arief Havas Oegroseno, said the Indian Ocean was projected to be a conflict of interest among big countries.

“It is possible that the Indian Ocean would be a conflict of interest of various countries,” Arief stated after attending National Seminar on Regional Maritime Security here on Monday.

Two countries, namely India and China, are competing for influence in the Indian Ocean region, which is allegedly rich in oil.

China relies on sea routes in the Indian Ocean region to import crude oil, while India is located in South Asia bordering the Indian Ocean.

“The Indian Ocean region is also important for Indonesia, as the country exports commodities to Europe and Africa through sea trade lanes in the area. The ships that come to Indonesia also use the trade routes,” he noted.

Therefore, Indonesia seeks to eliminate the influence of the major countries of the region in an attempt to create regional security and stability.

“We do not want the Indian Ocean

region to become a new hot spot. We have spent much energy to assist in the resolution of the South China Sea conflict,” he remarked.

Indonesia needs to create regional stability among the coastal countries of the Indian Ocean (Indian Ocean Rim Association/IORA).

The issue of piracy in the Indian Ocean becomes a common concern for countries in the region. As much as 41 percent of piracy worldwide occurs in this waterway, with a loss of billions of dollars.

However, Indonesia faces challenges to play a major role to maintain peace in the Indian Ocean.

“Several countries in the Indian Ocean coast have weak economy.

Poor countries do not have the ability to maintain maritime security,” he underlined.

To overcome this problem, Indonesia recommended the “blue economy” at the IORA summit held on March 7.

The conference resulted in Jakarta Concord, which is a document to guide member states to respond to the challenges, both in the region and globally. (ant)

Indonesia promotes global treaty to ban nuclear weapons

JAKARTA - Indonesia, along with states without nuclear weapons, are working together to promote the establishment of a convention to ban the use of nuclear weapons, an official said here on Monday.

Director General of Multilateral Affairs of Ministry of Foreign Affairs Hasan Kleib said here on Monday that Indonesia and several countries have been working together to promote an open working group to discuss and draft a nuclear weapon convention.

“The countries have been gathered to promote a new initiative,” Kleib said after attending a Regional Dialogue and Consultation on the Treaty of the NonProliferation (NPT) of Nuclear Weapon held in Jakarta on Monday along with the Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno LP Marsudi.

Nuclear weapon has been classified as a weapon of mass destruction, along with biological and chemical weapons.

The international society has signed conventions on biological and chemical weapons.

“We also want a convention on a total ban of nuclear weapon,” Kleib stated.

Kleib urged the five countries, namely the United States, Britain, France, China, and Russia, which are

currently possessing nuclear weapons, to meet their promise within the NPT to negotiate faithfully to remove their nuclear weapons completely.

The NPT is an international treaty, signed in July 1 1968, whose objective is to prevent the spread of nuclear weapon and weapons technology.

As many as 190 countries have taken part in the treaty which has three pillars, namely nonproliferation, disarmament, and peaceful use of nuclear energy.

“Indonesia has always been consistent that the implementation of the NPTs three pillars should be in balance,” Marsudi noted.

The current global situation has become a challenge and has forced commitment by the NPT member countries to achieve progress by implementing the NPTs three pillars, she remarked.

As many as 26 representatives from countries in the Asia-Pacific Region attended the meeting held in Jakarta on March 13 and 14.

The meeting was one of the series to prepare the first NPT Preparatory Committee, which is scheduled to be held in Vienna, Austria, from May 2 to 12, 2017.

The Preparatory Committee will be the first of the three planned sessions that will be held prior to the 2020 Review Conference. (ant)

Sp rt Chelsea beats United, sets up FA CUP semifinal vs Spurs LONDON — Chelsea prevailed over Jose Mourinho’s forceful, spoiling tactics to end Manchester United’s FA Cup defense and set up a semifinal derby with Tottenham. On another gloomy return to Stamford Bridge for Mourinho, United’s aggressive attempts to neutralize Eden Hazard backfired when Ander Herrera was booked twice for fouling the winger and dismissed 35 minutes into Monday’s quarterfinal.

“We were complaining,” Chelsea defender Gary Cahill said after the 1-0 victory. “We felt Eden was getting harassed.” CHELSEA’Strip to Wembley Stadium was secured six minutes into the second half when N’Golo Kante switched from midfield enforcer to match-winner. JAKARTA - Former CHELSEA, Real Madrid and AC Milan midfielder Michael Essien has joined Indonesia’s Persib Bandung, the club announced on social media on Tuesday.

The 34-year-old Ghanaian is the highest profile signing for Indonesian soccer since Cameroon World Cup hero Roger Milla and Argentine World Cup winner Mario Kempes played in the country in the 1990s.

Essien, who has been a free agent since leaving Greek club Panathinaikos at the end of last season, won the Champions League, two Premier League titles and four FA CUPSduring nine seasons at Chelsea.

ROME — Lazio kept up its push for a Champions League spot after two late goals helped it beat Torino 3-1 in Serie A on Monday.

Keita Balde Diao and Felipe Anderson scored in the final three minutes to send Lazio back to within four points of third-placed Napoli and the final qualifying position for Europe’s premier club competition.

Torino remained 10th.

It was also meant to be a fight between two of Italy’s most exciting forwards. Torino’s Andrea

Belotti tops the goalscoring charts with 22, while Ciro Immobile, the next Italian on the list, increased his tally to 17.

“We are friends,” Immobile said. “Tonight was a battle between Lazio and Torino, not between Andrea and I, and I’m happy Lazio won.

“I have to congratulate the whole team because it wasn’t easy to react in this way after they equalized. It means that the team is mature and I’m happy and proud of that.”

Sp rt Chelsea beats United, sets up FA CUP semifinal vs Spurs LONDON — Chelsea prevailed over Jose Mourinho’s forceful, spoiling tactics to end Manchester United’s FA Cup defense and set up a semifinal derby with Tottenham. On another gloomy return to Stamford Bridge for Mourinho, United’s aggressive attempts to neutralize Eden Hazard backfired when Ander Herrera was booked twice for fouling the winger and dismissed 35 minutes into Monday’s quarterfinal.

“We were complaining,” Chelsea defender Gary Cahill said after the 1-0 victory. “We felt Eden was getting harassed.” CHELSEA’Strip to Wembley Stadium was secured six minutes into the second half when N’Golo Kante switched from midfield enforcer to match-winner. Paul Pogba failed to close down France teammate Kante, who found the space to score from 20 yards (meters) and keep the PREMIER LEAGUE leaders on course for a domestic double.

It’s rare for Kante to be in the scoring spotlight, although his only other goal since joining Chelsea last year came on United’s last visit to west London. UK PM May’s hand moves closer to Brexit trigger

LONDON - British Prime Minister Theresa May cleared the final hurdle standing between her and the start of Brexit negotiations on Monday after parliament passed legislation giving her the power to start the EU exit process.

Members of the lower house of parliament voted to throw out changes to the bill made by the upper house earlier this month, after the government argued it needed freedom to operate without restriction to get a good deal.

Despite an attempt by the Liberal Democrats in the unelected upper chamber, the House of Lords, to re-introduce the conditions, the Lords also went on to approve the legislation unamended late on Monday.

“We are now on the threshold of the most important negotiation for our country in a generation,” Brexit minister David Davis said in a statement.

“So we will trigger Article 50 by the end of this month as planned and deliver an outcome that works in the interests of the whole of the UK.” The bill will now be sent to the queen for symbolic approval which could be granted as early as Tuesday morning, leaving May ready to start a two-year negotiation period, as set out in Article 50 of the EU’s Lisbon Treaty.

May’s spokesman hinted on Tuesday, however, that she might do so closer to the end of the month.

Her task in negotiating Britain’s EU exit was complicated on Monday by Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon demanding a new independence referendum, to be held in late 2018 or early 2019, once the Brexit terms are clearer.

In recent weeks, the government had lost two key votes in the House of Lords which added conditions to the bill to demand that May guarantee the rights of EU nationals living in Britain and give lawmakers more powers to reject the final terms she reaches with the EU. But May succeeded in warding off a potential rebellion from a handful of pro-EU Conservatives in the lower chamber, the House of Commons, where May only has a slim majority.

The Commons voted by 335 to 287 to reject the condition on EU nationals’ rights, and by 331 to 286 to reject the condition giving parliament a greater say on the final deal.

Earlier May’s spokesman said parliament would be involved in the Brexit process.

“We are determined parliament will be engaged all the way through the process and afterwards,” he told reporters. (rtr)

Fillon’s campaign relaunch marred by gifts of luxury suits PARIS - Francois Fillon outlined his plans to streamline the state’s role in France’s economy on Monday as he sought to revive his faltering presidential campaign, but again found himself on the defensive, this time over expensive suits he accepted as gifts.

With six weeks to go until the first round of voting, the former prime minister who was once favourite to win the presidency is battling to rally supporters and keep his centre-right alliance on his side after allegations of financial impropriety.

In a blitz of media interviews and a news conference, Fillon, an open admirer of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, spelled out his plans to reinvigorate France’s regulation-laden economy.

“I want to make 100 billion euros ($107 billion) of savings over five years and reduce by 500,000 the number of public sector jobs,” he said at the news conference.

“My programme is based on an ambition to make France a great political and economic power.”

Once again, however, Fillon’s attempts to reset his flagging campaign were troubled by potentially damaging stories of high living that sit awkwardly with his claim at his party’s primary last November to be beyond reproach ethically.

The Journal du Dimanche newspaper on Sunday reported that Fillon had received close to 50,000 euros worth of suits and clothing since 2012.

Fillon acknowledged a friend had given him two suits in February this year, adding: “and so what”.

He gave no further details on the provider of the gift and said the story was proof of a campaign to wreck his presidential bid.

“I cannot see this as anything other than a manhunt,” he told Europe 1 radio.

Fillon’s new offensive comes two days before he is due to meet judges investigating the hundreds of thousands of euros of taxpayers’ money that he paid to his wife Penelope and his children for work they did for him.

He reiterated policies to end the 35-hour working week, a move that would be fiercely opposed

by France’s muscular unions, and gradually raise the retirement age to 65 from 62 at present.

His updated manifesto also includes a pledge to demand lawmakers disclose whether they employ family members as staff.

An opinion poll released on Monday again showed Fillon thrown out of the presidential race in the first round, taking 20 percent of the vote to Macron’s 25 percent and Le Pen’s 27 percent.

“It is still being investigated to which groups the nine terrorist suspects belong,” head of the police public relations division Insp.Gen. Boy Rafli Amar said at the police headquarters here on Monday.

Boy said the nine are still in the process of interrogation by police investigators.

“We could not yet take a conclusion whether they belong to the Santoso group,” he said.

Santoto led a gang of Islamic terrorists creating security problem for a long time in Central Sulawesi before he was shot dead by police last year.

The nine suspects were piked up from separate places on Thursday and Friday last week.

Indian Ocean to be conflict of interest among big countries JAKARTA - Deputy of Maritime Sovereignty at Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs, Arief Havas Oegroseno, said the Indian Ocean was projected to be a conflict of interest among big countries.

“It is possible that the Indian Ocean would be a conflict of interest of various countries,” Arief stated after attending National Seminar on Regional Maritime Security here on Monday.

Two countries, namely India and China, are competing for influence in the Indian Ocean region, which is allegedly rich in oil.

China relies on sea routes in the Indian Ocean region to import crude oil, while India is located in South Asia bordering the Indian Ocean.

“The Indian Ocean region is also important for Indonesia, as the country exports commodities to Europe and Africa through sea trade lanes in the area. The ships that come to Indonesia also use the trade routes,” he noted.

Therefore, Indonesia seeks to eliminate the influence of the major countries of the region in an attempt to create regional security and stability.

“We do not want the Indian Ocean

region to become a new hot spot. We have spent much energy to assist in the resolution of the South China Sea conflict,” he remarked.

Indonesia needs to create regional stability among the coastal countries of the Indian Ocean (Indian Ocean Rim Association/IORA).

The issue of piracy in the Indian Ocean becomes a common concern for countries in the region. As much as 41 percent of piracy worldwide occurs in this waterway, with a loss of billions of dollars.

However, Indonesia faces challenges to play a major role to maintain peace in the Indian Ocean.

“Several countries in the Indian Ocean coast have weak economy.

Poor countries do not have the ability to maintain maritime security,” he underlined.

To overcome this problem, Indonesia recommended the “blue economy” at the IORA summit held on March 7.

The conference resulted in Jakarta Concord, which is a document to guide member states to respond to the challenges, both in the region and globally. (ant)

Indonesia promotes global treaty to ban nuclear weapons

JAKARTA - Indonesia, along with states without nuclear weapons, are working together to promote the establishment of a convention to ban the use of nuclear weapons, an official said here on Monday.

Director General of Multilateral Affairs of Ministry of Foreign Affairs Hasan Kleib said here on Monday that Indonesia and several countries have been working together to promote an open working group to discuss and draft a nuclear weapon convention.

“The countries have been gathered to promote a new initiative,” Kleib said after attending a Regional Dialogue and Consultation on the Treaty of the NonProliferation (NPT) of Nuclear Weapon held in Jakarta on Monday along with the Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno LP Marsudi.

Nuclear weapon has been classified as a weapon of mass destruction, along with biological and chemical weapons.

The international society has signed conventions on biological and chemical weapons.

“We also want a convention on a total ban of nuclear weapon,” Kleib stated.

Kleib urged the five countries, namely the United States, Britain, France, China, and Russia, which are

currently possessing nuclear weapons, to meet their promise within the NPT to negotiate faithfully to remove their nuclear weapons completely.

The NPT is an international treaty, signed in July 1 1968, whose objective is to prevent the spread of nuclear weapon and weapons technology.

As many as 190 countries have taken part in the treaty which has three pillars, namely nonproliferation, disarmament, and peaceful use of nuclear energy.

“Indonesia has always been consistent that the implementation of the NPTs three pillars should be in balance,” Marsudi noted.

The current global situation has become a challenge and has forced commitment by the NPT member countries to achieve progress by implementing the NPTs three pillars, she remarked.

As many as 26 representatives from countries in the Asia-Pacific Region attended the meeting held in Jakarta on March 13 and 14.

The meeting was one of the series to prepare the first NPT Preparatory Committee, which is scheduled to be held in Vienna, Austria, from May 2 to 12, 2017.

The Preparatory Committee will be the first of the three planned sessions that will be held prior to the 2020 Review Conference. (ant)

WASHINGTON — For years after the Great Recession ended, investors fretted — sometimes panicked — over the prospect that the Federal Reserve might begin to raise interest rates from record lows. Now? The Fed seems all but sure to raise rates Wednesday for the third time in 15 months and to signal more hikes probably coming. And the response from investors has been something akin to a yawn.

In light of Friday’s jobs report, optimism about Trump’s economic program and other signs that growth may pick up, some economists said they were raising their forecast for the number of rate increases this year from three to perhaps four.

“I think a March rate hike is a fait accompli,” said Sung Won Sohn, an economics professor at California State University, Channel Islands, who expects four rate increases in 2017. “The more important question is: How many more hikes they will give us for the balance of the year?”

If the Fed is no longer unsettling investors with the hint of a forthcoming rate increase, it marks quite a change from the anxiety that prevailed after 2008, when the central bank cut its key rate to a record low and kept it there for seven years. During those years, any slight shift in sentiment about when the Fed might begin raising rates — a step that would lead eventually to higher loan rates for consumers and businesses — was enough to move global markets.

In 2013, then-Chairman Ben Bernanke sent markets into a panic merely by mentioning that the Fed was contemplating slowing the pace of its bond purchases, which it was using then to keep long-term borrowing rates low.

But now, the economy is widely considered sturdy enough to handle modestly higher loan rates. The unemployment rate,

at 4.7 percent, is below the 4.8 percent level the Fed has deemed an indication of full employment. And inflation, which had stayed undesirably low for years, is edging near the 2 percent annual rate that the Fed views as optimal.

And while the broadest gauge of the economy’s health — the gross domestic product — remains well below levels associated with a healthy economy, many analysts say they’re optimistic that Trump’s proposed tax cuts, infrastructure spending increases and deregulation may acceler-

ate growth. Those proposals have lifted the confidence of business executives and offset concerns that investors might otherwise have had about the effects of Fed rate increases.

Yet for the same reason, some caution that if Trump’s program fails to survive Congress intact, concerns will arise that the president’s plans won’t deliver much economic punch.

Investors may start to fret about how steadily higher Fed rates will raise the cost of borrowing and slow spending by consumers and businesses.(ap)

SAN JUAN — A federal control board on Monday said Puerto Rico’s government needs to cut its public pension system by 10 percent, furlough tens of thousands of its workers and eliminate Christmas bonuses if it cannot generate other types of savings amid a nearly decade-long recession.

The seven-member board created by Congress last year to oversee the U.S. territory’s finances voted unanimously to add those measures to a 10-year fiscal plan presented by the island’s governor that the panel approved Monday. The measures will be implemented if the government fails to find other ways to cut

spending and increase revenue.

Board members said the spending cuts will be necessary so the government will have enough funds to pay for essential services such as education, health and public safety.

“Puerto Rico is about to capsize,” said board member David Skeel. “The island is overwhelmed by debt. Puerto Rico is in real danger of running out of money for even the most basic essential services.”

Skeel and other board members who met in New York said the plan calls for everyone on the U.S. territory of 3.4 million people to make

sacrifices.

Gov. Ricardo Rossello, whose government is struggling with nearly $70 billion in public debt that it is seeking to restructure, had resisted some of the board’s cuts, arguing they would fall too heavily on many living in Puerto Rico. He told The Associated Press that he was pleased with the plan and is confident his administration will find ways to head off the furloughs and the elimination of Christmas bonuses.

“That’s my goal,” he said by phone. “We’re taking bold steps to making sure the economy gets jumpstarted. We’re very much well on our way.”(ap)

Why so few are worried about likely Fed rate hike this week Wall Street appears too busy extending the stock market rally that began with President Donald Trump’s election in November, cheered by the prospect of tax cuts, an easing of regulations and higher spending for infrastructure to worry about a rate hike.

Fed watchers, it seems, are more buoyed by expectations for a vigorous economy than worried about whether slightly higher rates might slow growth.

When Chair Janet Yellen and several other Fed officials separately suggested earlier this month that the economy was sturdy enough to withstand a modest raising of loan rates, investors quickly raised their estimate of the probability of a rate hike at the Fed’s meeting this week from around 20 percent to 80 percent.

After Friday’s robust February jobs report — 235,000 added jobs, solid pay gains and a dip in the unemployment rate to 4.7 percent — the likelihood has grown to 95 percent, according to the CME Group, which tracks investor expectations of Fed actions. Yet no one seems very concerned.

“We’re just at a different place now than in 2013 when there was a lot of angst and uncertainty about the economy’s prospects,” said Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody’s Analytics. “Now, the fundamentals of the economy are much better. We are close to full employment and investors feel more comfortable about where we are.”

If you make a visit in July, August and September, it is the season of the highest waves reaching up to a height of 20 meters. Visitors really admire it, but do not get too close to the edge of the cliff due to frequent accidents.

In the meantime, the beach in the south of Nusa Dua is relatively deserted so that it is preferred by foreign travelers because there are bars with typical lounge chairs put on the beach. As the beach of Bali in general, the beach of Nusa Dua also has good waves for surfing activities and there are many surfboard rental in the area. The name Tegaltamu was used to indicate the identity that they were ‘guests’ (tamu in Balinese) of Tegal hamlet evacuating to Gianyar.

The name depicts the history of the founder namely guests originating from Tegal Badung. Refugees going to Tegaltamu have profession as merchant. “As refugees, they do not have any land to grow crops, so that the only job that could be done was becoming the dealer of arts,” said I Gusti Ngurah Pertu Agung, a descendant of Tegaltamu Palace.

Along with the development of Bali tourism, Tegaltamu Palace has been opened as a culture-based tourist destination since 1998 though it has become a tourist destination since the 1970s. Travelers from various countries come to learn Balinese culture such as dancing, playing gamelan music, preparing oblation and chanting. “Many foreigners are learning to dance, reading literature

and making sculptures,” said this alumnus of the Dance Department at the ISI Denpasar.

Gung Pertu, as he familiarly addressed, said that travelers knew Tegaltamu Palace as the center of the art and culture from several books. Many of them said the books published in the 1920s write about the uniqueness owned by Bali. GIANYAR - Thousands of pilgrims thronged Penataran Sasih Temple at Pejeng to say prayers in a series of the peak of the pedudusan ritual that coincided with the full moon of Balinese ninth month on Sunday (Mar. 12). Related to the umanis padudusan, the government of Gianyar offered bhakti penganyar ritual on Monday (Mar. 13).

As seen, thousands of the Hindus from all over Bali looked to attend the peak of the ritual officiated over by Ida Pedanda Geriya Sanding Lingsir, Pejeng. All the pilgrims looked to perform their worship solemnly. Due to crowded pilgrims, the other pilgrims should be willing to pray in the middle courtyard.

In a series of the ritual, on Sunday night was performed the Rejang dance, wayang dog and Sidakarya mask. Meanwhile, the following day, a series of the umanis padudusan, the government of Gianyar offered the bhakti penganyar. This ritual started around 10:00 and was officiated over by Ida Pedanda Wayahan Bun from Griya Sanur, Pejeng.

The nganyarin ritual was attended by Deputy Regent of Gianyar, Made Mahayastra, with the leaders of the Gianyar agencies, Chairman of the Gianyar House of Representatives, Wayan Tagel, Deputy Chairman of the Gianyar House of Representatives, Made Jata, and legislators of Gianyar, PHDI Gianyar well as employees of Gianyar district.

Amidst the pilgrims, there seemed the chief of Jero Kuta customary village, Pejeng, Tjokorda Gde Putra Pemayun, accompanied by a number of ritual committee members and hamlet chief throughout Jero-Kuta, Pejeng. (kmb35)

However, the environmental sanitation in the region remains to become a problem and needs continuous handling both by the government and management. This was conveyed by the Secretary of the Association of Indonesia Tours and Travel Agencies (ASITA) Bali, Putu Winastra, on Monday (Mar. 13).

This tourism player from Undisan village, Tembuku, Bangli, mentioned that the interest of travelers to visit Pemuteran area is high enough. It is not only enabled by a number of tourism facilities, but also by clean environment, so as to give the sense of comfort. “If we pay attention, sanitation remains an issue in the area. Necessarily, it has to be really free from plastic waste,” he said.

Aside from Pemuteran, similar condition still happens in the Lovina area. In the future, it needs to be taken seriously, both by the district government and local management. “This needs to be addressed,” he said.

To support the tourism development, Winastra considered it necessary to improve the quality of human resources. All the ranks must qualify for the standards. “Sometimes the human resources are vulnerable to friction. This aspect should get serious attention as well,” he said.

On the other hand, this former Deputy Chairman of the ASITA Bali mentioned that tourist attractions in Buleleng also need maximal promotion. He also gave a signal to be ready to cooperate. “For example, Buleleng is now offering the Bali Aga tourism village. District government can take us to the location and let us know. Later on, we will also promote it,” he said.

Especially regarding the tourist attraction managed by the natural resources conservation agency (BKSDA), he criticized that the rate increase lacked dissemination. Such conditions often caused travelers to be surprised. “For instance, the increase rate of admission fee to Menjangan Island and surrounding areas should be disseminated first.

SEOUL - North Korea warned the United States on Tuesday of “merciless” attacks if an aircraft carrier strike group led by the USS Carl Vinson, which is joining South Korean forces for exercises, infringes on its sovereignty or dignity.

North Korea, which has alarmed its neighbours with two nuclear tests and a string of missile launches since last year, said the arrival of the U.S. strike group was part of a “reckless scheme” to attack it.

“If they infringe on the DPRK’s sovereignty and dignity even a bit, its army will launch merciless ultraprecision strikes from ground, air, sea and underwater,” the North’s state news agency KCNA said.

North Korea’s official name is the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

“On March 11 alone, many enemy carrier-based aircraft flew along a course near territorial air and waters of the DPRK to stage drills of dropping bombs and making surprise attacks on the ground targets of its army,” KCNA said.

A U.S. Navy spokesman said the Carl Vinson was on a regular, scheduled deployment to the region during which it would take part in exercises with the forces of ally South Korea.

Last week, North Korea fired four ballistic missiles into the sea off Japan in response to annual U.S.-South Korea military drills, which the North

sees as preparation for war.

The murder in Malaysia last month of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s estranged half-brother has added to a sense of urgency to efforts to handle North Korea.

U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is due to make his first visit to South Korea on Friday. Last week, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations said President Donald Trump’s administration was reevaluating its North Korea strategy and “all options are on the table”.

CHINESE OPPOSITION Compounding regional tension, China is vehemently opposed to the deployment in South Korea of an advanced U.S. anti-missile system.

The United States and South Korea say the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense anti-missile system is for defence against North Korea, but China fears its powerful radar can probe deep into its territory and compromise its security.

The United States began to deploy the system a week ago, a day after North Korea launched its latest four missile tests.

South Korean and U.S. troops began the large-scale joint drills, which are billed as defensive in nature, on March 1.

The exercise last year involved about 17,000 American troops and more than 300,000 South Koreans.

South Korea has said this year’s exercise would be of a similar scale.

The United States has also started to deploy “Gray Eagle” attack drones to South Korea, a U.S. military spokesman said on Monday.

China says the exercises do nothing to ease tension. Last week, it called on North Korea to stop its weapons tests and for South Korea and the United States to stop their drills. A state-run Chinese newspaper said the USS Carl Vinson was taking part in a simulation of a preemptive strike against North Korea’s nuclear and missile facilities.

The drills sent the North “an explicit radical threat”, to which it could not be expected to remain indifferent, the influential Global Times said. North and South Korea were “equally hysterical”, it said.

“The U.S. and South Korea often accuse China of being uncooperative, but the reality is they are uncooperative over China’s mediation,” it said, referring to complaints that China does not do enough to rein in old ally North Korea. (rtr)

SEOUL - The head of South Korea’s Samsung Group, Jay Y. Lee, may be languishing in a jail cell but he is allowed plenty of visitors, which may allow him to play a key role in corporate decisions even if he isn’t running the conglomerate like he did before.

Lee, who didn’t attend last Thursday’s preparatory hearing for his trial on bribery, embezzlement and other charges, is kept well away from other inmates at the Seoul Detention Centre. Some, such as top former presidential advisors, are also defendants in the corruption scandal that led to the removal from office of South Korean President Park Geun-hye on Friday.

Under South Korean regulations, though, Lee can meet any of his battery of attorneys without time limits and as often as he wants during business hours from Monday to Saturday.

One of those lawyers told the first day of what special prosecutors described as potentially “the trial of the century” that Lee denies all charges against him.

Lee, like others in detention centers awaiting trial, is also entitled to one 30-minute visit per day from someone else, including executives from one of Samsung’s affiliates, or at least 12 hours of such meetings a month. At the discretion of the warden of the detention center, he could have additional special meetings in a visiting room that doesn’t have partitions, allowing detainees to review documents and receive phone calls.

By comparison, in the United States, a defendant in federal custody on corporate crime charges

is generally allowed unrestricted access to attorneys during regular business hours but can only receive other visitors for a maximum four hours a month. In the U.S., though, major white collar defendants are usually allowed to post bail so they can live at home before trial.

Samsung declined to confirm those visits or comment on the level of Lee’s involvement in management affairs since he was detained.

In a statement it said: “Mr. Lee’s priority is preparing the legal defense so the truth can be revealed in future court proceedings.”

Samsung hasn’t named a replacement for Lee, who company insiders say did not manage day-today affairs but was instead acting as the key decision maker on major initiatives such as new investments, acquisitions, personnel decisions and restructuring.

“There is no plan B,” said an executive at a Samsung affiliate, who declined to be identified as he was not authorised to speak publicly on the matter. “We believe the vice chairman will be proven innocent, and if he walks free after the first trial there’s no reason to talk about alternatives.” (rtr)

Making autonomous car play, Intel offers $15B for Mobileye

DETROIT — Computer chip maker Intel paid handsomely for a piece of the next big thing Monday as it offered more than $15 billion for Mobileye, an Israeli company at the forefront of autonomous vehicle technology.

The purchase, scheduled to close by year’s end, creates another major player in self-driving technology as traditional automakers and tech companies vie to put the cars into public use. Most companies have predicted autonomous vehicles will be carrying people in the next three-to-five years.

The big investment by Intel validates predictions that autonomous cars will someday come in large numbers, signifying a sea change in the way we all get around, said Timothy Carone, a Notre Dame University professor who has written about the future of automation. “Major players are finding ways finding ways to position themselves for a change as seminal as the personal computer revolution,” he said.

Jerusalem-based Mobileye, which makes software that processes information from cameras and other car sensors to decide where the cars should steer, has products on just about

every automaker’s autonomous test fleet. The combination with Intel adds hardware, more software expertise and data centers that the companies say will hasten deployment of autonomous technology, including wider use of automatic emergency braking and other technologies that already are on the roads.

Automakers and some technology companies are testing autonomous vehicles in California, Michigan and a few other states. Mobileye has partnerships with many of them, including testing cars with Intel and BMW. The Mobileye deal will help put Intel in the driver’s seat in terms of supplying vital parts of autonomous vehicles, said IHS Markit analyst Akhilesh Kona. Besides Mobileye’s technology, Intel is gaining access to major automakers and parts suppliers, Kona said. “They have captured a piece of what should be a fast-growing market.”

Intel and Mobileye are targeting an array of sensors and camera systems that are expected to generate annual sales of $10 billion by 2022, quintupling from about $2 billion this year, IHS estimated. Mobileye controls about 70 percent of the world market for driver assistance systems such as

IHS expects as many as 21 million autonomous vehicles to be sold by the year 2035.

But there are still a number of obstacles to overcome.

Companies still haven’t aren’t certain how the cars will drive in snow or other bad weather, and it will be difficult for cars to be programmed to handle numerous local traffic customs. Also, no one really knows yet when the cars will be safe enough to remove human backup drivers.

The rise of mobile devices caused a decline in the personal computer market and undercut Intel’s growth and influence in the technology business. Now Intel is expanding into other potentially fertile fields.

Besides setting its sights on the still-nascent driverless car market, Intel also has been investing in wearable computers, such as smartwatches, as well as drones.

The companies said Monday’s deal combines Mobileye’s software with Intel’s hardware, data centers and its own software, giving automakers a one-stop place to shop for autonomous systems.

“This acquisition essentially merges the intelligent eyes of the autonomous car with the intelligent brain that actually drives the car,” Intel CEO Brian Krzanich wrote in a note to employees.

The deal moves Intel-Mobileye to at least parity with Google’s Waymo, Uber Technologies and car companies for autonomous car leadership, Carone said. It’s likely to pressure competitors into signing more deals, he added.

The acquisition should have little short-term impact on competitors such as Autoliv and Continental, and Intel and Mobileye already are working with supplier Delphi and BMW to test cars, Jefferies analyst Ashik Kurian wrote in a note to investors.

But in the long-term as the market moves toward more autonomous vehicles, the hookup “confirms our concern about the emergence of new large and well-capitalized competitors” threatening auto suppliers, Kurian wrote.

Intel Corp. will pay $63.54 for each share of Mobileye N.V., a 34 percent premium to its Friday closing price. That’s below Mobileye’s record high closing price of $64.14 in August 2015 after Morgan Stanley raised its target price on the shares to $80. Mobileye NV’s stock closed Monday up 28 percent to $60.62. Intel shares fell 2 percent to $35.16.

The boards of both companies still have to approve the transaction. The companies put the equity value of the deal at $15.3 billion.

BRUSSELS - High-tech crimes, such as document fraud, money laundering and online trading in illegal goods, are at the root of almost all serious criminality, Europe’s police agency said on Thursday.

“These cross-cutting criminal threats enable and facilitate most, if not all, other types of serious and organised crime,” such as drugs and people trafficking, Europol said in a study of organised crime that it publishes every four years.

So-called “ransomware”, which blocks a person or company’s computer until a fee is paid to unlock it, has become a major concern.

But traditional crimes also now rely increasingly on new technology, such as the drug trade’s use of drones, and burglars using computers to scout neighbourhoods online and track social media posts to see when people are away

from home.

Europol says there are some 5,000 international crime groups under investigation, with members from more than 180 nationalities.

Drug trafficking remained the largest criminal market in the European Union, generating some 24 billion euros ($25 billion) of profit per year.

People smuggling has become more lucrative as wars and unrest in the Middle East and Africa have pushed record number of people to try to reach Europe, with 510,000 illegal crossings into the EU in 2016.

“Nearly all of the irregular migrants arriving in the EU along these routes use the services offered by criminal networks at some point during their journey,” Europol said. (rtr)

Thai parliament discusses tourism issues

DENPASAR - Tourism in Thailand draws larger numbers of visitors than Bali tourism does. However the land of the white elephant is still looking to Bali to learn how to promote tourism. Members ot Thailand’s parliament even revealed that Thailand and Bali face similar issues in terms of traffic congestion and transportation-based online applications.

“My arrival to Indonesia is aimed at improving ties with the government of Indonesia. I first made a visit to Bali’s local government and want to learn how to promote tourism as Bali is the most attractive destination for travellers”, said President of the National Legislative Assembly of the Kingdom of Thailand, H.E Prof. Pornpetch Wichitcholchai, during his visit to the Bali House of Representatives, on Sunday (Mar. 12).

According to Wichitcholchai, Thailand and Bali have similar cultures. In addition, Bali also has many beautiful beaches. He added that he hopes that they can work on cooperating in the tourism sector. “We also have the same problems as Bali in the matter of transportation and traffic congestion because many unregistered vehicles are still taking unfair business advantages” he added in attendance along with nine other members of parliament (MP).

Member of Commission II of the Bali House of Representatives, A.A. Ngurah Adhi Ardhana, said that Bali put has great hope in the development and advancement of tourism based on tradition and culture.

“We have a problem with our tourism, especially regarding shorter lengths of stay, that are down to an average 3 days. Of course, we share this experience of how to make visitors linger longer”, he said.

Wiryatama added that Bali really needs to learn from Thailand related to preparing tourism-supporting infrastructure. Thailand has managed to establish a good airport, seen though the city has the same problems.

“In addition to having beautiful views, Thailand also has culture.

BANGLI - Recently there has been an increase in the number of basket weavers in Kintamani, causing tighter competition. Artisans therefore need to be aware of market needs and more active in seeking out and maintaining their customer base.

One basket artisan from Pengotan hamlet, Pengotan, Kintamani named Ni Ketut Porsi, said on Sunday (Mar. 12) that marketing competiton has become more difficult lately as more and more people have started selling baskets in the region. She has seen many of her customers turn to other baset makers.

“In the past, I had many customers and made a lot of sales, mostly because my neighbour and I were the only artisans making baskets around here. Now there are many basket artisans in Pengotan”, she said.

She has therefore seen a significant decline in the sales and now has to walk around with her baskets seeking out customers.

“I have to bring my baskets to Songan village now. If I just wait for buyers here, it may take a long time to sell a basket. I do not make much profit as I sell a set of 10 baskets for IDR 10,000”, she explained.

She sells her baskets all over Bangli and sometimes in Denpasar and Bading as well. However she cannot deliver to places outside of kintamani everyday as it depends on her orders.

“My big baskets that are commonly sold in Kintamani are usually used to hold tomatoes, cabbage, tangerine et cetera. Meanwhile, the baskets that I sell in Denpasar are used as waste baskets. Unfortunately, most farmers

BANGLI - The budget managed by the Bangli tourism and culture agency to promote tourism in 2017 is quite minimal. Moreover, for promotional activities to other regions, the agency only gets quota of IDR 80 million. This was recognized by the Promotion Division Head of the Bangli Tourism and Culture Agency, I Wayan Merta, when confirmed on Sunday (Mar. 12).

Merta said that when compared to last year, the budget of tourism promotion in 2017 shows a decrease.

This year, the budget allocated for promotion that can be managed only amounts to IDR 330 million. Meningitis case has no impact on pig sales in Bangli

BANGLI - The emergence of a number of meningitis cases caused by bacteria Streptococcus suis Meningitis (MSS) transmitted through pigs to humans in some regions in Bali such as Badung and Tabanan does not overly affect the sales of pork in Bangli. This was revealed by a pig farmer from Galiran hamlet, Jehem, Tembuku, Jro Mangku Puseh, on Monday (Mar. 13).

Jro Mangku Puseh said that he has heard about the MSS case afflicting to some people outside the Bangli region like Badung and Tabanan. Moreover, this MSS case has emerged since around 2012. However, the MSS bacterium just affects human this time.

“Indeed MSS have appeared since long time ago.

However, it only transmits to humans this year. Previously, there has been no transmission to humans,” said Jro Mangku Puseh when visited at his pigsty.

Jro Mangku Puseh asserted that although this case has been widespread among the public, it does not significantly affect the sales of pigs. He added that until these days the sales of pig are still running normally considering that so far it has not been found any pigs infected by the MSS. “Sales of pork are still running smoothly. Although there are MSS cases, they do not greatly affect the sales of pigs. Moreover, regular customers from Klungkung and Kintamani still purchase pigs here,” he said.

“So far, the sales remain stable. It is a blow to pig farmers. Farmers just enjoyed the previous price hike of pork in the pigsty at IDR 26,000 per kilogram rising to IDR 28,000 per kilogram. Hopefully, this case will not cause the prices of pork to drop again,” said Mupu.

He said although there is potential to be infected

by MSS, the possibility is small. He added the prone areas to get infected by the MSS are Badung, North Gianyar and Tabanan because they are in the crossing region of the entrance of pigs from outside Bali. “To prevent pigs from being infected by the MSS, every week we have to spray the pigsty with disinfectant and maintain the sanitation. If it is clean, the opportunity to be exposed to MSS will become very small,” said Mupu. (kmb41)

People advised not to consume raw pork

DENPASAR - People’s representatives in the Bali parliament urged the community to stop eating raw pork or raw pig’s blood. This is meant to avoid the streptococcus suis meningitis (MSS) bacterium from entering the body.

“When consuming pork, it should be well cooked first. Do no longer consume raw pork,” said Chairman of Commission IV of the Bali House of Representatives, Nyoman Parta, when confirmed on Monday (Mar. 13).

Similar suggestion was also delivered by a member of Commission III, I Wayan Adnyana. Moreover, in the near future, the Hindus in Bali will celebrate Nyepi as well as Galungan and Kuningan. Consumption will certainly increase because people always slaughter pigs during the holidays.

“MSS bacterium is harmful in raw meat. There are people just chopping raw meat, and it is then poured with boiling water. Surely, the bacteria do not die. However, if cooked properly, the bacteria will die,” said this Democratic Party politician.

Adnyana asked related agencies, namely the health agency and livestock agency to disseminate information about the hazards of MSS bacteria so that people will not be confused. In addition, it should also be explained about the characteristics of pigs having been infected by the MSS bacteria.

“When slaughtering, please carefully observe about the characteristics. It is said that any wounds of the body that has direct contact will be hazardous because they can be exposed to the bacteria,”

he said.

Meanwhile, Spokesperson of the provincial government of Bali, I Dewa Gede Mahendra Putra, urged people to purchase pork at official counter so that it can be ascertained if the pork has been hygienically slaughtered. Moreover, when processing the pork, make sure the hands are not injured or wrap the wound properly when processing the pork. People are asked to be proactive and sensitive to the surrounding environment.

“If in the neighborhood there are breeders whose pigs are sick, please be informed not to sell it to pork collector. Similarly, make sure that all the dishes made from pork we eat have been cooked well done,” he added.

Corresponding to the information of the Bali health agency, said Mahendra, the MSS belongs to acute bacterial zoonotic meningitis whose transmission occurs from pigs to humans. The transmission is through pork products such as fresh blood, intestines, offal and infected meat. Additionally, the abrasion when processing infected pork also potentially transmits the disease.

Clinical symptoms of the MSS include fever or having a record of fever, altered consciousness, stiff neck and headache. It often causes neural deafness of moderate, severe and bilateral level.

“The head of health agency also informed that the MSS incubation period is a few hours up to 14 days after eating infected raw or undercooked pork products such as the red lawar or one of Balinese delicacies using raw blood and komoh or clear soup,” he said. (kmb32)

LOS ANGELES — Kim Kardashian West is opening up about being held at gunpoint during a jewelry heist in Paris last year.

In a preview of next week’s “Keeping Up with the Kardashians,” Kardashian West recalls seeing the gun “as clear as day.” Kardashian West emotionally describes the episode to her sisters in the clip. She says she thought there was “no way out” of the situation.

Kardashian West wasn’t physically harmed during the October incident. Ten suspects have been charged in connection with the case.

Britain’s Ed Sheeran storms U.S. Billboard charts

NEW YORK - Ed Sheeran stormed the U.S. charts on Monday, taking the top spot on the Billboard 200 with his new album “Divide” and also topping the digital songs chart with lead single “Shape of You.” The British singer-songwriter sold an overwhelming 451,000 units of “Divide” in its debut week, giving him the biggest U.S. sales week for any album so far this year.

His U.S. success follows an even bigger start for “Divide” in his native Britain, where Sheeran, 26, had the fastest selling album by a solo male artist in British chart history on Friday.

The singer also made news this week when the makers of HBO TV series “Game of Thrones”

announced he would be making a guest star appearance in the upcoming seventh season of the fantasy adventure, which arrives in July.

The Billboard 200 album chart tallies units from album sales, song sales (10 songs equal one album) and streaming activity (1,500 streams equal one album).

Sales of rock band Metallica’s album “Hardwired... To SelfDestruct” jumped more than 200 percent to take the No. 2 spot on the Billboard 200 with 81,000 units sold for the week. The jump followed a promotional deal linked to the band’s upcoming U.S. tour.

Last week’s top spot, Atlanta rapper Future’s “HNDRXX” album, slipped to No. 5.

On the digital songs chart, which measures online singles sales, Sheeran’s “Shape of You” sold another 115,000 units for the week,

DENPASAR - Streptococcus suis meningitis (MSS) cases have emerged previously. However, the cases were sporadic or only happened once in a while and did not cause outbreaks. “At Sanglah Hospital, the case is also sporadic, emerging once in a while. However, it has not been found any MSS in children so far,” said a Neural Pediatrician Consultant of Sanglah Hospital, Dr. I Gusti Ngurah Made Suwarba.

He continued that MSS can affect all ages. However, the age group having the great potential to be infected by MSS is the adult age group because it has started eating pork and lawar. In general, children under five years are prone to meningitis but rarely affected

by MSS as it is transmitted through pork. Probably, the toddlers rarely eat pork, especially lawar.

He explained that meningitis is brain membrane inflammation. In the meantime, if the brain is infected, it is called encephalitis. The cause of meningitis varies. One of them is bacterium. “If caused by bacterium, it called bacterial meningitis and if caused by virus, it is called viral meningitis,” he explained. Streptococcus suis bacterium is commensal in pigs. This means the bacteria do exist in pigs, but do not

always cause disease to pig. However, the bacterium can make pigs sick if pig’s stamina is poor.

To date, there is no evidence supporting the existence of the vectors of Streptococcus suis bacteria. So, the bacterial infection is believed to happen through the part of the pig, especially not well done pork. Then, it is consumed by humans. “Japanese encephalitis (JE) is clearly transmitted by Culex mosquito where the mosquito bites pig having been infected by JE virus. Then, the mosquitoes carry JE virus in the body and bite humans,” he concluded.

He was confident if pork is cooked well or fried thoroughly, the bacteria contained in the pig will die. “The suspicious thing is the lawar prepared with raw blood,” he said. Meanwhile, if frozen, he

was not sure if the bacteria die. If frozen, some bacteria can be transformed to defend themselves. Besides, he was not confident if Balinese spicy seasoning (basa wayah) can kill bacteria. Bacteria can only be killed by hot temperature, not spicy seasoning that makes burning sensation in the mouth or lips.

In Bali, the number of meningitis and encephalitis cases in children is almost the same. In the meningitis or encephalitis, histopathologically it is actually meningoencephalitis, both brain membrane and the brain are affected by the infection because anatomically they are located very close to each other between the brain and the bran membranes,” he explained.
