Yalitza Aparicio: an indigenous Mexican woman captivates Hollywood

LOS ANGELES - Yalitza Aparicio had just gone along with her sister to the casting call for Alfonso Cuaron’s new film. She had no intention of trying out herself.

But destiny put her in front of the camera and that was how the Mexican woman of indigenous origins, who had just graduated as a teacher but wasn’t yet working, became the star of “Roma.”

She is likely now to spend the next few months learning how to handle Tinseltown red-carpet ceremonies -- Cuaron’s latest film is a sensation, and her work is generating major buzz. “Roma” won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, has been nominated for three Golden Globes and is a strong favorite for the Oscars in February.

“It wasn’t something that I really wanted or had dreamed about,” Aparicio, who turned 26 on Tuesday, told AFP. “Because of your socioeconomic status or your culture, you think you can’t aspire to be an actress, and to participate in this medium that sounds like a fantasy.”

Death toll in Ankara train crash rises to seven: governor

Seven people were killed after a high-speed train crashed into a locomotive in the Turkish capital on Thursday, the Ankara governor’s office said, revising an initial death toll.

“This morning there was an accident after the 6.30 high-speed train to Konya hit a locomotive tasked with checking rails on the same route,” Sahin said.

The governor added that search and rescue efforts continued as “technical investigations” were underway to find out exactly what caused the crash in Yenimahalle district. Images published by Turkish media showed some wagons had derailed and debris from the train scattered on the rail track.

The Ankara public prosecutor

has launched an investigation into the crash, state news agency Anadolu reported.

The accident comes after another train disaster in July when 24 people were killed and hundreds more injured after a train derailed in Tekirdag province, northwest Turkey, due to ground erosion following heavy rains. (afp)

Juliette Binoche to head Berlin film festival jury BERLIN - Oscar winner and one of France’s most recognised actresses, Juliette Binoche, will head the jury of next year’s Berlin film festival, organisers said Tuesday.

“I’m very pleased that Juliette is president of the 2019 International Jury,” said Dieter Kosslick, director of the Berlinale.

“The festival shares a strong connection with her, and I’m very happy that she’ll be returning to the festival in this distinguished position.”

Binoche, who made her cinematic debut in 1983 in “Liberty Belle” by Pascal

Kane, has since appeared in more than 70 films.

Prolific in both European and US productions, she took home an Academy Award for her role in “The English Patient” in 1996.

She also scooped the best actress award at the Cannes Film Festival in 2010 for her leading role in Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami’s “Certified Copy”.

Her most recent film screened at the Berlinale was “Nadie Quiere la Noche” (Endless Night) by Isabel Coixet.

MANGUPURA - A number of accesses to Kuta tourism area will be closed on the changing night of 2018. The measures to avoid severe congestion while the celebration takes place starting from 16:00 local time.

NEGARA - Jembrana district government has always echoed and promoted Jembrana tourism.

Various facilities have been established in several locations or attractions in Jembrana. Management of the facilities built on several objects are not clear to the present, so they seem neglected and not wellmaintained.

They are not in accordance with the promotion heralded on social media and other promotions. For example, the rest area of Candikusuma as seen on Tuesday afternoon (Dec. 11), the grass and bush area looks long. Likewise the waste is scattered.

The only area remaining to look clean is the selfie spot because it is often used as a selfie background.

Besides, the open stage built has never been taken advantage to show art performance. Therefore, it looks dirty and grass starts to appear between the ceramics at the location of the open stage. “There has never been any performance. Moreover, the toilets in the rest area are always locked. If wishing to urinate, visitors must go to the stalls nearby,” said one of the local resident. As consequence, most visitors prefer to hang out in the gazebo.

He also appealed to culinary stand owners in the Candikusuma rest area to help clean up because the cleaning staff deployed there had resigned.

“We hope the village will help in management,” he hoped.

Head of the Jembrana Tourism and Culture Office, Nengah Alit, also stated that his office had conducted an assessment with local headman related to the management. “It is going to organize an art performances ahead of the New Year in order to attract visitors,” he said. (120)

Meghan presents fashion award to wedding dress designer Waight Keller

LONDON - Givenchy’s artistic director Clare Waight Keller Monday received the British designer of the year womenswear award from Meghan Markle, whose dress she designed for her wedding to Prince Harry.

“It is such a pleasure to be here celebrating British fashion,” Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, said at the star-studded annual Fashion Awards at the Albert Hall.

The former US actress, who is pregnant, praised the “vision”, “creativity” and also “the incredible kindness” of Waight Keller.

The two women met in early 2018, before the designer created the dress worn by Meghan for her wedding to Harry on May 19.

The British Fashion Awards also recognised Vivienne Westwood, winner of the award for

positive change, for her commitment to the environment.

The 77-old high priestess of punk took the opportunity to denounce the “rotten financial system” which the dame said was “the cause of all our problems”.

A long-time political campaigner, she also took aim at French President Emmanuel Macron who recently cancelled fuel tax increases in the face of the “yellow vest” protests.

“This tax hurts the poor more than anybody,” Westwood said, adding “he’s not thinking that he has already given all these tax breaks to the rich people. So of course everybody is going to be annoyed.”

DENPASAR — Regional Agency for Food and Drug Control (BBPOM) of Denpasar returned to hold a press release regarding the market monitoring against illegal cosmetics on Tuesday (Dec. 11). As a result, of the 68 facilities monitored, 35 facilities were unqualified (TMK).

Head of the BBPOM Denpasar, I Gusti Ayu Adhi Aryapatni, accompanied by the Division Head of Inspection and Investigation of BBPOM Denpasar, I Wayan Eka Ratnata, said the market control was the second stage in 2018 where the first one was conducted from October to December. The findings were valued at IDR 7.2 billion. This value has increased 3-fold from the results in the first stage amounting to IDR 2.1 billion.

The targeted facilities are modern and traditional shopping centers, importers, distributors, cosmetics stores and beauty clinics. However, she has not found any importers distributing such unqualified products in Bali. She said the purchasing system in Bali is carried out in a broken purchasing system. “Maybe the importers can be found in other provinces,” he said.

As the results of searches by the BBPOM are known that facilities selling the unqualified products averagely admitted to have got the products from Asemka Market, Jakarta.

Approximately 61.73 percent of them are local products and 38.27 percent others are imported products.

The imported products are mostly from Korea such as masks for skin care, eye shadow and lipstick.

Badung district found the most unqualified facilities because the number of substance is mostly found in Badung district. In Badung, there are 28 facilities, where 15 of which are unqualified facilities. “The place where to find is the same, they are modern shopping centers, cosmetics

shops and clinics. So, in the first stage we encountered products, while in the second stage we will target again,” he said.

Stores or facilities found selling unqualified products are the same stores as those previously raided.

However, from the results of supervision in the second phase of 2018, there are also shops or facilities that are not the same as in the previous unqualified stores.

The cosmetics found consist of several types, namely those containing hazardous substances, cosmetics without marketing permission, cosmetics with fake marketing license number, and expired cosmetics. Hazardous substances in the cosmetics are hydroquinone, mercury and retinoate.

The use of these substances has the effect of triggering cancer cells due to continuous use. Many people are still using the products containing hazardous substance because the demand remains high. Therefore, the BBPOM seeks to suppress the supply and demand. In terms of supply, she conducted inspection and market control, while in terms of demand side she made an effort to educate and disseminate.

The efforts to reduce the demand are also carried out through community empowerment. One of them is by empowering beauty salons.

Unqualified product findings are also found in beauty salons and clinics. “Beauty clinics usually work with doctors. If there is use of hazardous substance, especially mercury, it is prohibited altogether, but hydroquinone can still be prescribed by skin specialists but certainly with more intensive supervision. In the meantime, unqualified cosmetic is sold freely, but when used as medicine it is allowed,” she said. (kmb42)

DENPASAR — Ahead the Galungan and Kuningan holidays later this month, the need for groceries and the like will increase. Related to this, the Denpasar Industry and Trade Agency cooperates with Logistics Agency and Regional Inflation Control Team (TPID) held bazaar activities. Interestingly, this bazaar is held from December to early January 2019 in four sub-districts in Denpasar. At first, this activity was held at Batur hamlet, Ubung, North Denpasar, Tuesday (Dec. 11).

This bazaar got considerable attention from local residents. It can been seen from the opening at 08:00 where the community had thronged the hall of Batur hamlet in order to be able to buy various basic necessities. Not less than two hours, a number of commodities, such as cooking oil, 3-kg LPG gas and sugar with a total of 1 ton were sold out.

This happened because the commodities sold are much cheaper than market prices like the 5-liter cooking oil is for sale at IDR 61,000, while the market price is IDR 70,000; white crystal sugar sold for IDR 10,000 /

kg compared to normal price of IDR 12,500 / kg; Beras Kita premium rice of 10-kg sack at IDR 99,000 from the normal price of IDR 120,000 and 3-kg LPG sold at IDR 14,500 dropped from the normal price in the range of IDR 20,000. They were entirely sold out, and the price of kitchen spices is also 15 percent cheaper than the market price in general.

Division Head of the Metrology and Commercial Order of the Denpasar Ministry of Industry and Trade, Jarot Agung Iswayudi, who was met on the sidelines of the bazaar activities said the market activities are cheap in order to pro-

vide services to the public. By that way, people can buy basic goods for Galungan and Kuningan’s needs at affordable and cheaper prices such as kitchen spices, LPG, sugar, cooking oil and other basic necessities. Of course, with this bazaar activity, the community is expected to enjoy the holiday gratefully without being burdened with high prices of necessities.

“We realize to be unable to meet all community needs, but at least with this low-cost market we can help the community reduce their expenses in preparing the needs of the holiday,” he said.

Meanwhile, one of the buyers, Indra, expressed her excitement with this cheap market. “I am greatly helped by this low-cost market because I can purchase everything for the holiday at a very cheap price here. They are far from the market price in general. So, I don’t have to spend too much and can save for other needs during holidays,” she said. (kmb12)

Denfest 2018 features children’s games

LONDON - British MPs launched a no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Theresa May over her Brexit plan on Wednesday but she vowed to fight off the leadership challenge, warning that changing course could derail the whole process.

Facing her biggest political crisis since assuming office a month after Britons voted in June 2016 to leave the EU, May said a leadership change would “put our country’s future at risk and create uncertainty when we can least afford it”.

The minister said the cuts will help restore balance to the world market in 2019.

slowdown in demand for oil and accordingly decided to cut production,” Mazrouei said.

The producers will also sign a long-term agreement in April to formalise the cooperation between OPEC and non-OPEC parties to the cuts, the minister said.

He said the alliance with Russia and other non-cartel producers has made the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries stronger and more effective.

“OPEC is no longer the 30 million barrel (per day) group ... With OPEC, non-OPEC including Russia, we are now talking about 50 million barrels or half the world’s production,” Mazrouei said. (afp)

Goodyear halts tire production in Venezuela as economy slips VALENCIA - Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. is halting production in Venezuela, making it the latest international corporation to abandon a South American nation in economic crisis, officials said Monday.

Spokesman Eduardo Arguelles told The Associated Press that Goodyear-Venezuela had made the “difficult decision” to no longer produce tires in the country, which has seen an economic contraction worse than the U.S. Great Depression.

“Our goal had been to maintain its operations, but economic conditions and U.S. sanctions have made this impossible,” Arguelles said.

The company had endured tens of millions in losses in recent years

as the Venezuelan bolivar plummeted in value against the U.S. dollar. The company based in Akron, Ohio, moved to deconsolidate its Venezuelan subsidiary in the fourth quarter of 2015, but continued to operate with a staff of about 1,100 from the depressed industrial city of Valencia.

Workers who arrived at the plant Monday were stunned to find it was no longer in operation.

“They closed doors without saying anything,” said Luis Aponte, a

union worker who said government workers were on site assessing the situation.

There was no immediate response from the government.

The announcement came after a letter issued “to whom it may concern” circulated online stating the company had been forced to cease operations and that starting Monday no one in Venezuela would be authorized to continue producing the company’s products.

The letter also said Goodyear

would fulfill its financial obligations to workers.

Goodyear’s retreat from Venezuela adds it to a growing list of corporations that have ceased operations in the country. Some of those enterprises, like General Motors, had assets including factories and vehicles seized by the government. Others chose to cut their losses because shortages, inflation and currency and prices controls made business difficult.

Kellogg, Bridgestone, Kimberly-Clark and General Mills have all closed or reduced operations in recent years.

Pakistan rejects US blacklist for religious freedom violations

ISLAMABAD - Pakistan on Wednesday rejected Washington’s decision to place it on a blacklist of countries that violate religious freedom, branding it “politically motivated” and defending its treatment of minorities.

“Pakistan does not need counsel by any individual country (on) how to protect the rights of its minorities,” a statement from the foreign ministry said, adding that Islamabad “rejects” the designation.

The statement came a day after

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced that he had designated Pakistan among “countries of particular concern” in a congressionally mandated annual report.

The move means the US government is obliged to exert pressure,

including imposing sanctions if necessary, to end freedom violations.

It comes more than 40 days after a Pakistani court exonerated Asia Bibi, a Christian woman who had spent eight years on death row for

blasphemy.

She remains in protective custody in an unknown location after violent protests against her acquittal. Blasphemy is an inflammatory charge in Pakistan, and high-profile vigilante murders and mob lynchings have been carried out in the past.

Bibi is currently seeking asylum abroad. Her family claims her life

Pakistan says around four percent of its total population comprises citizens belonging to Christian, Hindu, Budhists and Sikh faiths.

Nine countries remained for another year on the list of “Countries of Particular Concern” -- China, Eritrea, Iran, Myanmar, North Korea, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan.

Six years on, wife of disappeared Laos activist ‘can’t move on’

BANGKOK - The wife of a prominent Laos activist who vanished after being stopped at a checkpoint on the streets of Vientiane said Wednesday she “can’t move on” as the mystery over his fate remains unsolved almost six years later.

The disappearance of Sombath Somphone, an awardwinning environmental campaigner, drew rare international attention to the poor rights record of Laos, an authoritarian one-party state where activists work under state scrutiny.

Sombath was last seen on the night of December 15, 2012, with CCTV cameras capturing the moment when police pulled him over at a checkpoint in the Laos capital.

He was shown entering a separate truck with two other men and driven off.

His case cast a dark cloud over civil society in Laos and highlighted dangers faced by activists, journalists and human rights defenders in Southeast Asia who risk being targeted with impunity.

But six years of searching have brought no answers and little solace to Sombath’s 72-year-old wife, Shui-Meng Ng.

“When the person who’s so dear to you has gone missing, the only thing the family member can do... is to continue to make the disappeared visible,” she said Wednesday during a panel discussion in Bangkok about Sombath’s disappearance.

“You can’t move on because the person who is most important in your life has been so unjustly taken from you.”

Laos government officials have denied any connection to the case, which was raised during a review of the country’s rights record at the UN Human Rights commmittee in Geneva in July.

Rights groups accuse local authorities of failing to carry out even the most cursory of investigations and withholding information.

Ng, a Singaporean citizen based in Laos, said she hoped to speak “for all those silenced victims” of forced disappearances.

“My favorite memory with him was to go home each day and we would have dinner together and talk about the issues of our day,” she told AFP. (afp)

Indonesia bans K-pop supergroup’s miniskirt commercial

A television ad featuring members of K-pop supergroup Blackpink dressed in miniskirts has been banned from Indonesian airwaves, prompting a furious backlash from fans.

The Indonesian Broadcasting Commission ordered 11 domestic TV stations to yank the commercial late Tuesday, saying it was indecent.

The order followed a petition signed by more than 100,000 people asking the commission to cancel the ad -- which in turn sparked a tit-for-tat campaign calling for the expulsion

of the woman who launched the original petition.

The ad features four members of the top-selling Korean girl band singing and dancing to promote Shopee, an Indonesian online retailer.

Indonesia’s broadcasting watchdog said the ad flouted moral norms in the world’s biggest Muslim majority country.

“Companies need to be careful when they’re making a commercial that they don’t associate their product with something Indonesians see as negative,” commission head Hardly Stefano said in a statement Tuesday.

Shopee called the commission’s remarks “very valuable

input”, but added that the ad had been greenlit by another government agency prior to its airing.

The decision to ban the ad was widely panned by Blackpink fans in Indonesia. “This is too much -- you can see women dressed that way in any mall in Indonesia,” Disna Harvens told AFP. “It’s not vulgar at all.” Blackpink has quickly become a household name at home and among K-pop fans overseas with their signature hip hop-infused music, impeccably choreographed dance routines and edgy fashion styles.

Papuan rebels refuse Indonesia’s call to surrender over massacre

Separatist Papuan rebels who killed at least 16 construction workers at a remote jungle camp refused Indonesia’s demand to surrender Wednesday, as claims surfaced that the military murdered civilians after the massacre.

The work camp killings last week were a marked escalation in decades of mostly sporadic skirmishes between poorly armed and disorganised guerrillas and an Indonesian military long accused of gross human rights abuses against civilians.

The rebels said they would continue their insurgency and to fight for an independent Papua, which shares a border with island nation Papua New Guinea, just north of Australia.

“Indonesia came to Papua as a thief -- do you think it’s right for a homeowner to surrender to thieves?” rebel spokesman Sebby Sambom told AFP Wednesday.

The former Dutch colony declared itself independent in 1961, but neighbouring Indonesia took control of the region two years later on the condition it hold an independence

referendum.

Jakarta annexed mineral-rich Papua in 1969 with a UNbacked vote that was widely seen as a sham.

The rebels’ refusal to surrender comes after Indonesia’s chief security minister Wiranto ruled out any discussions with the National Liberation Army of West Papua (TPNPB).

The group is an armed wing of the independence movement which claimed responsibility for the jungle camp massacre.

“I won’t hold talks with criminals,” Wiranto, who like many Indonesians goes by one name, told reporters Tuesday in Jakarta. “Whatever they say is a lie. They’ve committed inhumane crimes.”

The victims, employees of a state-owned contractor, were building bridges and roads in a major infrastructure push for Indonesia’s most impoverished region.

The rebels claimed the project was military controlled and the workers were legitimate targets.

Indonesia said most of the 16 victims’ hands were tied together with some suffering gunshot or knife wounds and blunt-force injuries. One worker was almost decapitated.

At least four more workers remain missing, while a soldier was also killed by rebels, authorities said. Meanwhile, a local Papuan has alleged that security forces killed at least four civilians as it hunted for the rebels.

The reports could not be independently confirmed. Indonesia has denied the claim.

Human Rights Watch called for a probe into the jungle camp massacre and allegations of subsequent civilian deaths.

“A Papua militant group’s attack on a work site raises grave concerns that require a full investigation,” HRW’s Elaine Pearson said in a statement.

Sky was then caught in a longrunning doping controversy that began when Froome returned an adverse doping test, for elevated levels of the asthma medication salbutamol, on his way to victory in the Vuelta a Espana in 2017. He was cleared 10 months later. Team Sky also have plenty of detractors within cycling for tactics that many believe stifle racing.

Their superior budget has allowed them to employ riders who would be leaders elsewhere in a

support capacity and effectively shut down attacks in the biggest races, something that has proved unpopular with many, particularly at the Tour de France.

Sky began its involvement with the sport in 2008, when it successfully teamed up with British Cycling to increase participation and support the country’s elite riders, who became a major force at world events including the Olympic Games.

“We came into cycling with the aim of using elite success to inspire greater participation at all levels,” said Jeremy Darroch, Sky’s group chief executive.

“After more than a decade of involvement, I couldn’t be prouder of

what we’ve achieved with Team Sky and our long-standing partners at British Cycling.”

“I’d like to pay a special tribute to Dave Brailsford and the immensely talented team of riders and staff he has assembled at Team Sky,” he added. “What they have achieved together would have been beyond the dreams of many just a few years ago.”

US cable giant Comcast in October became the majority shareholder of Sky, coming out on top against Rupert Murdoch’s 21st Century Fox. Fox, which owns a minority stake in Team Sky, has also confirmed it will no longer be involved in cycling after next year. (afp)

DHAKA - Shai Hope smashed a brilliant century as West Indies edged Bangladesh by four wickets in the second one-day international to level the three-match series 1-1 in Dhaka on Tuesday.

Opener Hope hit an unbeaten 146 off 144 balls, guiding West Indies to 256-6 in 49.4 overs after the visitors relied on three wickets from paceman Oshane Thomas to restrict Bangladesh to 255-7 in 50 overs.

Hope shared 71-run in an unbroken seventh wicket stand with Keemo Paul to help West Indies get their first victory on the tour and stay alive in the series after they suffered a five-wicket loss in the opening match on Sunday.

Paul, who remained unbeaten on 18, pushed spinner Mahmudullah towards midwicket to complete the victory.

Lyon in winter wonderland after sealing Champions League last-16 berth

Hoarau brace beats Juve but Italians take top spot ahead of Man United

Nabil Fekir fired Lyon into the Champions League last 16 for the first time in seven years after bagging the crucial equaliser in a 1-1 draw against Shakhtar Donetsk in the driving snow in Kiev on Wednesday.

Fekir struck for the away side in the 65th minute to cancel out Junior Moraes’ 22nd-minute opener for Shakhtar, who had to win at their temporary home of the some 700 kilometres (435 miles) from Donetsk to leapfrog Lyon into second place in Group F. “There’s a lot of emotion, joy, pride and relief as it was difficult this evening. We deserved the result and qualification,” Lyon coach Bruno Genesio told RMC Sport.

“I’m very proud of the players because we came here to play and didn’t come away from home to play for a draw. I’m really pleased that Nabil scored the goal as people have been questioning him of late.”

Lyon held off Shakhtar, who are playing at the Olympic Stadium in the Ukrainian capital after martial law was declared in the country’s border regions amid tensions with Russia, to keep hold of second spot and a place in the knockout stages, five points behind group winners Manchester City.

It looked for much of the match that Lyon were destined to be knocked out in freezing Kiev, after missing a hatload of chances before Fekir finally curled home the crucial leveller.

“We did everything we could to keep hold of the lead, we couldn’t do it... the individual quality of Fekir made the difference,” said Shakhtar coach Paulo Fonseca.

Guillaume Hoarau scored in either half as Young Boys inflicted a 2-1 defeat on Juventus in their final Champions League group game on Wednesday in Switzerland, but the Italians still took top spot in Group H after Manchester United lost by the same scoreline to Valencia.

The Swiss champions proved too hot to handle for the Cristiano Ronaldo-led Italians whose 26-match unbeaten away run going back to November 2017 ended in freezing temperatures in Bern.

France forward Hoarau slotted in the first after half an hour from the spot at the Stade de Suisse, blasting in the second after 68 minutes to lift the spirits of his already-eliminated side who finished bottom of the group.

Paulo Dybala -- who scored a hat-trick in Juve’s 3-0 home win

in Turin -- came off the bench just after the second goal and pulled one back for Massimiliano Allegri’s side ten minutes from time and had a second disallowed in injury time.

Juventus finish top of Group H on 12 points with United on ten, Valencia on eight and Young Boys with four.

“We achieved our objective by winning the group, even on a night where everything seemed to go wrong, maybe we weren’t focused enough,” said Allegri.

“We missed so many opportunities and gifted a penalty, so at the end of the day it was only right that we lost.”

Pakistan rejects US blacklist for religious freedom violations

ISLAMABAD - Pakistan on Wednesday rejected Washington’s decision to place it on a blacklist of countries that violate religious freedom, branding it “politically motivated” and defending its treatment of minorities.

“Pakistan does not need counsel by any individual country (on) how to protect the rights of its minorities,” a statement from the foreign ministry said, adding that Islamabad “rejects” the designation.

The statement came a day after

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced that he had designated Pakistan among “countries of particular concern” in a congressionally mandated annual report.

The move means the US government is obliged to exert pressure,

including imposing sanctions if necessary, to end freedom violations.

It comes more than 40 days after a Pakistani court exonerated Asia Bibi, a Christian woman who had spent eight years on death row for

blasphemy.

She remains in protective custody in an unknown location after violent protests against her acquittal. Blasphemy is an inflammatory charge in Pakistan, and high-profile vigilante murders and mob lynchings have been carried out in the past.

Bibi is currently seeking asylum abroad. Her family claims her life

But it last year placed Pakistan on a special watch list -- a step short of the designation -- and Washington has separately curbed military assistance.

Pakistan says around four percent of its total population comprises citizens belonging to Christian, Hindu, Budhists and Sikh faiths.

Nine countries remained for another year on the list of “Countries of Particular Concern” -- China, Eritrea, Iran, Myanmar, North Korea, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan.

Six years on, wife of disappeared Laos activist ‘can’t move on’

BANGKOK - The wife of a prominent Laos activist who vanished after being stopped at a checkpoint on the streets of Vientiane said Wednesday she “can’t move on” as the mystery over his fate remains unsolved almost six years later.

The disappearance of Sombath Somphone, an awardwinning environmental campaigner, drew rare international attention to the poor rights record of Laos, an authoritarian one-party state where activists work under state scrutiny.

Sombath was last seen on the night of December 15, 2012, with CCTV cameras capturing the moment when police pulled him over at a checkpoint in the Laos capital.

He was shown entering a separate truck with two other men and driven off.

His case cast a dark cloud over civil society in Laos and highlighted dangers faced by activists, journalists and human rights defenders in Southeast Asia who risk being targeted with impunity.

But six years of searching have brought no answers and little solace to Sombath’s 72-year-old wife, Shui-Meng Ng.

“When the person who’s so dear to you has gone missing, the only thing the family member can do... is to continue to make the disappeared visible,” she said Wednesday during a panel discussion in Bangkok about Sombath’s disappearance.

“You can’t move on because the person who is most important in your life has been so unjustly taken from you.”

Laos government officials have denied any connection to the case, which was raised during a review of the country’s rights record at the UN Human Rights commmittee in Geneva in July.

Rights groups accuse local authorities of failing to carry out even the most cursory of investigations and withholding information.

Ng, a Singaporean citizen based in Laos, said she hoped to speak “for all those silenced victims” of forced disappearances.

“My favorite memory with him was to go home each day and we would have dinner together and talk about the issues of our day,” she told AFP. (afp)

Indonesia bans K-pop supergroup’s miniskirt commercial

A television ad featuring members of K-pop supergroup Blackpink dressed in miniskirts has been banned from Indonesian airwaves, prompting a furious backlash from fans.

The Indonesian Broadcasting Commission ordered 11 domestic TV stations to yank the commercial late Tuesday, saying it was indecent.

The order followed a petition signed by more than 100,000 people asking the commission to cancel the ad -- which in turn sparked a tit-for-tat campaign calling for the expulsion

of the woman who launched the original petition.

The ad features four members of the top-selling Korean girl band singing and dancing to promote Shopee, an Indonesian online retailer.

Indonesia’s broadcasting watchdog said the ad flouted moral norms in the world’s biggest Muslim majority country.

“Companies need to be careful when they’re making a commercial that they don’t associate their product with something Indonesians see as negative,” commission head Hardly Stefano said in a statement Tuesday.

Shopee called the commission’s remarks “very valuable

input”, but added that the ad had been greenlit by another government agency prior to its airing.

The decision to ban the ad was widely panned by Blackpink fans in Indonesia. “This is too much -- you can see women dressed that way in any mall in Indonesia,” Disna Harvens told AFP. “It’s not vulgar at all.” Blackpink has quickly become a household name at home and among K-pop fans overseas with their signature hip hop-infused music, impeccably choreographed dance routines and edgy fashion styles.

Papuan rebels refuse Indonesia’s call to surrender over massacre

Separatist Papuan rebels who killed at least 16 construction workers at a remote jungle camp refused Indonesia’s demand to surrender Wednesday, as claims surfaced that the military murdered civilians after the massacre.

The work camp killings last week were a marked escalation in decades of mostly sporadic skirmishes between poorly armed and disorganised guerrillas and an Indonesian military long accused of gross human rights abuses against civilians.

The rebels said they would continue their insurgency and to fight for an independent Papua, which shares a border with island nation Papua New Guinea, just north of Australia.

“Indonesia came to Papua as a thief -- do you think it’s right for a homeowner to surrender to thieves?” rebel spokesman Sebby Sambom told AFP Wednesday.

The former Dutch colony declared itself independent in 1961, but neighbouring Indonesia took control of the region two years later on the condition it hold an independence

referendum.

Jakarta annexed mineral-rich Papua in 1969 with a UNbacked vote that was widely seen as a sham.

The rebels’ refusal to surrender comes after Indonesia’s chief security minister Wiranto ruled out any discussions with the National Liberation Army of West Papua (TPNPB).

The group is an armed wing of the independence movement which claimed responsibility for the jungle camp massacre.

“I won’t hold talks with criminals,” Wiranto, who like many Indonesians goes by one name, told reporters Tuesday in Jakarta. “Whatever they say is a lie. They’ve committed inhumane crimes.”

The victims, employees of a state-owned contractor, were building bridges and roads in a major infrastructure push for Indonesia’s most impoverished region.

The rebels claimed the project was military controlled and the workers were legitimate targets.

Indonesia said most of the 16 victims’ hands were tied together with some suffering gunshot or knife wounds and blunt-force injuries. One worker was almost decapitated.

At least four more workers remain missing, while a soldier was also killed by rebels, authorities said. Meanwhile, a local Papuan has alleged that security forces killed at least four civilians as it hunted for the rebels.

The reports could not be independently confirmed. Indonesia has denied the claim.

Human Rights Watch called for a probe into the jungle camp massacre and allegations of subsequent civilian deaths.

“A Papua militant group’s attack on a work site raises grave concerns that require a full investigation,” HRW’s Elaine Pearson said in a statement.

“Militants and responding security forces should not inflict harm on ordinary Papuans,” she added. (afp)

Goodyear halts tire production in Venezuela as economy slips VALENCIA - Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. is halting production in Venezuela, making it the latest international corporation to abandon a South American nation in economic crisis, officials said Monday.

Spokesman Eduardo Arguelles told The Associated Press that Goodyear-Venezuela had made the “difficult decision” to no longer produce tires in the country, which has seen an economic contraction worse than the U.S. Great Depression.

“Our goal had been to maintain its operations, but economic conditions and U.S. sanctions have made this impossible,” Arguelles said.

The company had endured tens of millions in losses in recent years

as the Venezuelan bolivar plummeted in value against the U.S. dollar. The company based in Akron, Ohio, moved to deconsolidate its Venezuelan subsidiary in the fourth quarter of 2015, but continued to operate with a staff of about 1,100 from the depressed industrial city of Valencia.

Workers who arrived at the plant Monday were stunned to find it was no longer in operation.

“They closed doors without saying anything,” said Luis Aponte, a

union worker who said government workers were on site assessing the situation.

There was no immediate response from the government.

The announcement came after a letter issued “to whom it may concern” circulated online stating the company had been forced to cease operations and that starting Monday no one in Venezuela would be authorized to continue producing the company’s products.

Facing her biggest political crisis since assuming office a month after Britons voted in June 2016 to leave the EU, May said a leadership change would “put our country’s future at risk and create uncertainty when we can least afford it”.

“Weeks spent tearing ourselves apart will only create more divisions,” May said in a statement delivered outside her Downing Street office, adding: “I stand ready to finish the job.”

He said that the producers decided to meet in April instead of June “to allow us to take the required decision,” before the six months are up.

The minister said the cuts will help restore balance to the world market in 2019.

slowdown in demand for oil and accordingly decided to cut production,” Mazrouei said.

The producers will also sign a long-term agreement in April to formalise the cooperation between OPEC and non-OPEC parties to the cuts, the minister said.

He said the alliance with Russia and other non-cartel producers has made the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries stronger and more effective.

“OPEC is no longer the 30 million barrel (per day) group ... With OPEC, non-OPEC including Russia, we are now talking about 50 million barrels or half the world’s production,” Mazrouei said. (afp)

LONDON - Givenchy’s artistic director Clare Waight Keller Monday received the British designer of the year womenswear award from Meghan Markle, whose dress she designed for her wedding to Prince Harry.

DENPASAR — Regional Agency for Food and Drug Control (BBPOM) of Denpasar returned to hold a press release regarding the market monitoring against illegal cosmetics on Tuesday (Dec. 11). As a result, of the 68 facilities monitored, 35 facilities were unqualified (TMK).

Head of the BBPOM Denpasar, I Gusti Ayu Adhi Aryapatni, accompanied by the Division Head of Inspection and Investigation of BBPOM Denpasar, I Wayan Eka Ratnata, said the market control was the second stage in 2018 where the first one was conducted from October to December. The findings were valued at IDR 7.2 billion. This value has increased 3-fold from the results in the first stage amounting to IDR 2.1 billion.

The targeted facilities are modern and traditional shopping centers, importers, distributors, cosmetics stores and beauty clinics. However, she has not found any importers distributing such unqualified products in Bali. She said the purchasing system in Bali is carried out in a broken purchasing system. “Maybe the importers can be found in other provinces,” he said.

As the results of searches by the BBPOM are known that facilities selling the unqualified products averagely admitted to have got the products from Asemka Market, Jakarta.

Approximately 61.73 percent of them are local products and 38.27 percent others are imported products.

The imported products are mostly from Korea such as masks for skin care, eye shadow and lipstick.

Badung district found the most unqualified facilities because the number of substance is mostly found in Badung district. In Badung, there are 28 facilities, where 15 of which are unqualified facilities. “The place where to find is the same, they are modern shopping centers, cosmetics

shops and clinics. So, in the first stage we encountered products, while in the second stage we will target again,” he said.

Stores or facilities found selling unqualified products are the same stores as those previously raided.

However, from the results of supervision in the second phase of 2018, there are also shops or facilities that are not the same as in the previous unqualified stores.

The cosmetics found consist of several types, namely those containing hazardous substances, cosmetics without marketing permission, cosmetics with fake marketing license number, and expired cosmetics. Hazardous substances in the cosmetics are hydroquinone, mercury and retinoate.

The use of these substances has the effect of triggering cancer cells due to continuous use. Many people are still using the products containing hazardous substance because the demand remains high. Therefore, the BBPOM seeks to suppress the supply and demand. In terms of supply, she conducted inspection and market control, while in terms of demand side she made an effort to educate and disseminate.

The efforts to reduce the demand are also carried out through community empowerment. One of them is by empowering beauty salons.

Unqualified product findings are also found in beauty salons and clinics. “Beauty clinics usually work with doctors. If there is use of hazardous substance, especially mercury, it is prohibited altogether, but hydroquinone can still be prescribed by skin specialists but certainly with more intensive supervision. In the meantime, unqualified cosmetic is sold freely, but when used as medicine it is allowed,” she said. (kmb42)

DENPASAR — Ahead the Galungan and Kuningan holidays later this month, the need for groceries and the like will increase. Related to this, the Denpasar Industry and Trade Agency cooperates with Logistics Agency and Regional Inflation Control Team (TPID) held bazaar activities. Interestingly, this bazaar is held from December to early January 2019 in four sub-districts in Denpasar. At first, this activity was held at Batur hamlet, Ubung, North Denpasar, Tuesday (Dec. 11).

This bazaar got considerable attention from local residents. It can been seen from the opening at 08:00 where the community had thronged the hall of Batur hamlet in order to be able to buy various basic necessities. Not less than two hours, a number of commodities, such as cooking oil, 3-kg LPG gas and sugar with a total of 1 ton were sold out.

This happened because the commodities sold are much cheaper than market prices like the 5-liter cooking oil is for sale at IDR 61,000, while the market price is IDR 70,000; white crystal sugar sold for IDR 10,000 /

kg compared to normal price of IDR 12,500 / kg; Beras Kita premium rice of 10-kg sack at IDR 99,000 from the normal price of IDR 120,000 and 3-kg LPG sold at IDR 14,500 dropped from the normal price in the range of IDR 20,000. They were entirely sold out, and the price of kitchen spices is also 15 percent cheaper than the market price in general.

Division Head of the Metrology and Commercial Order of the Denpasar Ministry of Industry and Trade, Jarot Agung Iswayudi, who was met on the sidelines of the bazaar activities said the market activities are cheap in order to pro-

vide services to the public. By that way, people can buy basic goods for Galungan and Kuningan’s needs at affordable and cheaper prices such as kitchen spices, LPG, sugar, cooking oil and other basic necessities. Of course, with this bazaar activity, the community is expected to enjoy the holiday gratefully without being burdened with high prices of necessities.

“We realize to be unable to meet all community needs, but at least with this low-cost market we can help the community reduce their expenses in preparing the needs of the holiday,” he said.

Meanwhile, one of the buyers, Indra, expressed her excitement with this cheap market. “I am greatly helped by this low-cost market because I can purchase everything for the holiday at a very cheap price here. They are far from the market price in general. So, I don’t have to spend too much and can save for other needs during holidays,” she said. (kmb12)

NEGARA - Jembrana district government has always echoed and promoted Jembrana tourism.

Various facilities have been established in several locations or attractions in Jembrana. Management of the facilities built on several objects are not clear to the present, so they seem neglected and not wellmaintained.

They are not in accordance with the promotion heralded on social media and other promotions. For example, the rest area of Candikusuma as seen on Tuesday afternoon (Dec. 11), the grass and bush area looks long. Likewise the waste is scattered.

The only area remaining to look clean is the selfie spot because it is often used as a selfie background.

Besides, the open stage built has never been taken advantage to show art performance. Therefore, it looks dirty and grass starts to appear between the ceramics at the location of the open stage. “There has never been any performance. Moreover, the toilets in the rest area are always locked. If wishing to urinate, visitors must go to the stalls nearby,” said one of the local resident. As consequence, most visitors prefer to hang out in the gazebo.

Head of the Jembrana Tourism and Culture Office, Nengah Alit, also stated that his office had conducted an assessment with local headman related to the management. “It is going to organize an art performances ahead of the New Year in order to attract visitors,” he said. (120)

Seven people were killed after a high-speed train crashed into a locomotive in the Turkish capital on Thursday, the Ankara governor’s office said, revising an initial death toll.

But her own mother, who raised her on her own, worked as a maid and that helped Aparicio understand the relationship of love and heartbreak that can form between caregivers and their bosses. (afp)

had died and 43 were injured.

“This morning there was an accident after the 6.30 high-speed train to Konya hit a locomotive tasked with checking rails on the same route,” Sahin said.

The governor added that search and rescue efforts continued as “technical investigations” were underway to find out exactly what caused the crash in Yenimahalle district. Images published by Turkish media showed some wagons had derailed and debris from the train scattered on the rail track.

The Ankara public prosecutor

has launched an investigation into the crash, state news agency Anadolu reported.

The accident comes after another train disaster in July when 24 people were killed and hundreds more injured after a train derailed in Tekirdag province, northwest Turkey, due to ground erosion following heavy rains. (afp)

Juliette Binoche to head Berlin film festival jury BERLIN - Oscar winner and one of France’s most recognised actresses, Juliette Binoche, will head the jury of next year’s Berlin film festival, organisers said Tuesday.

“I’m very pleased that Juliette is president of the 2019 International Jury,” said Dieter Kosslick, director of the Berlinale.

“The festival shares a strong connection with her, and I’m very happy that she’ll be returning to the festival in this distinguished position.”

Binoche, who made her cinematic debut in 1983 in “Liberty Belle” by Pascal

Kane, has since appeared in more than 70 films.

Prolific in both European and US productions, she took home an Academy Award for her role in “The English Patient” in 1996.

She also scooped the best actress award at the Cannes Film Festival in 2010 for her leading role in Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami’s “Certified Copy”.

Her most recent film screened at the Berlinale was “Nadie Quiere la Noche” (Endless Night) by Isabel Coixet.

The next edition of the Berlinale is to run from February 7 to 17. (afp)
