Ho, ho, ho! SantaCon is coming to town
NEW YORK - From Boston to Austin and Chicago to Los Angeles, revelers across the United States will be donning red and white suits this weekend to mark the worldwide SantaCon holiday pub crawl. The annual, often inebriated gatherings of people dressed as Santa Claus as they go barhopping will be held in 380 cities in the United States and 51 countries, according to SantaCon.info. The website, which bills itself as the established authority on the
event, lists details of festivities around the globe, discounts on Santa Claus costumes and advice on how to avoid ticket scams for the events which are mostly free. But while the faux Santas are counting on a fun-filled day and evening, some bar owners and
local officials are bracing for the worst after previous events ended with complaints of drunken and disorderly behavior, public urination and arrests. Norman Siegel, the New York lawyer who represents SantaCon, acknowledged that in the past the festival in the city had been marred by drunken incidents but this year organizers are aiming for no, or very few arrests or summons. Taxing questions spoil Ballon d’Or win for Ronaldo
MADRID - Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo feels unable to celebrate his fourth Ballon d’Or award as much as his previous triumphs due to recent allegations of tax evasion. The European Investigative Collaborations (EIC) media consortium reported in early December that Ronaldo, and several other clients of soccer agency Gestifute, had used tax havens to handle tens of millions of euros in earnings.
Gestifute denied the accusations last week. Ronaldo, who led Portugal to the Euro 2016 title in July after helping Real Madrid clinch the Champions League, expressed his disappointment at the timing of the charges against him. “Of course it (allegations) has spoiled it a little bit. I would be lying if I said it hadn’t. I’m not a hypocrite,” he told soccer magazine France Football. “I wasn’t pleased. The whole process in itself is hard and not only for me, but also for the people alongside me: my family, my son, all those who work with me. “All that irritates me because I try to do things correctly, be transparent.” In their denial, Gestifute stated that Ronaldo, who moved to Real Madrid from Manchester United in 2009, is compliant with his tax obligations in Spain. The 31-year-old Ronaldo, who beat Barcelona forward Lionel Messi and Atletico Madrid striker Antoine Griezmann to world football’s top individual prize for 2016 at a glitzy ceremony on Monday, insists he has nothing to hide. “You just have to type ‘Cristiano Ronaldo’ on the Internet and you know everything about me,” the Portugal captain said. “I don’t have any reason to lie. “What came out troubles me. Because it’s not true. The lie is troubling. I have done things correctly. “There are a lot of innocent people in prison. And I feel a little bit like that. You know you have done nothing wrong, and they say you have done something reprehensible. No one likes that. “But the truth always comes out. Sooner or later.” Ronaldo, who previously won the Ballon d’Or in 2008, 2013 and 2014, is currently with Real Madrid in Japan preparing for Thursday’s Club World Cup semi-final against Mexican side Club America. Parliament request new SME food stalls
DENPASAR - The municipality of Denpasar’s annual Denpasar Festival (Denfest) that will stake place from December 28-31 this year was officially launched recently by the Minsitry of Tourism. Based on evaluations and input from previsouly years regarding some of the activities of the festival, Denpasar legislator I Made Sukarmana said on Monday (Dec 12) that some changes need to be made.
The culinary stands for example should be offered to people to have never participated in Denfest before, in order to encourage equity amongst the many culinary SMEs that operate in Denpasar.Sukarmana also expressed his great appreciation for the existence of Denfest but added that he has often heard criticism about the fact that the culinary stands are always the same and lack variety. He has therefore asked the organising committee to embrace a wider range of small culinary businesses who are also dedicated to preserving local cuisine. There are thousands of small busineses that fit this category, so more people should be given a chance to participate, he said, adding that otherwise it gives the impression that only those businesses whose owners are close with the festival organisers are chosen while others are not given a chance. Sukarmana went on to say that he hopes that organizers can be transparent in their selection of culinary participants and also be transparent in their presentation of the qualification required for participation. Furthermore, for those who do not qualify, the Industry and Commerce Agency or other relevant agencies should provide guidance and training so that culinary businesses that
aspire to participate in the festival may do so the following year. That way, he said, SMEs willl be able to develop regardless of where they are situated. Also this will provide a more diverse offering of foods for the event held in the area of Catur Muka every year. One SME owner, who asked to remain anonymous, explained that he was wanting to participate in this year’s Denfest, but when he went to the Regional Secretariat of Denpasar in charge of the Economic Affairs to register, he was told that the registration periode was over. This seemed starnge to him because there had not been any clear information about when registration had opened and before he knew it it was already closed. Head of Denpasar government agency who asked asked for anonymity, expressed a similar complaint explaining that he great hope of involving mentored partners in the four day event but many of the partners that intended to participate have not been given the facility to do so. “Hopefully next year, we will be given a few booths so those who have been mentored can set up stands at Denfest”, he said. Head of Economic Affairs for the Regional Secretariat of Denpasar, Made Saryawan, who is also on the committee for the Denfest confirmed that participants have yet to be determined and that they have only now strated assessing the 80 participants who have registered to set up food stands at the festival. All the Denfest participants have to go through a selection preocess, they are not appointed, he explained. To presum ethat the participants are always the same people is not right, it is difficult to say because it is based ont eh selection process, he said. Monday (Dec. 12). Bali Tourism Office remains optimistic that target of 7.8 million domestic tourist visits will be fulfilled until the end of the year. There are still holiday feasts like Christmas and the New Year that will bring in more travelers. “I estimate that domestic tourist visits will increase about 5 percent because the holiday is only on Monday. The target can still be met until the end of the year,” said the Head of the Bali Tourism Office, A.A. Gede Yuniartha Putra, when confirmed on Monday. Gov’t proposal envisions phone calls on airline flights
WASHINGTON — Airlines could let passengers make in-flight phone calls using Wi-Fi under a proposal from federal regulators.
Flight attendants and others have complained that the calls could be disruptive. But the Department of Transportation said Thursday that it envisioned allowing the calls if airlines tell all customers about the policy when they buy their tickets. That way, customers could make other travel arrangements if they feared sitting next to passengers chatting on their phones. There is a 60-day comment period, and the proposal leaves the door open to the possibility that federal officials could still impose an outright ban. The Federal Communications Commission prohibits passengers from making cellphone calls during flights, but not Wi-Fi calls. “Today’s proposal will ensure that air travelers are not unwillingly exposed to voice calls, as many of them are troubled over the idea of passengers talking on cell phones in flight,” Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said in a statement. In 2014, the department issued a request for public comments on the possibility of permitting the calls and the response was overwhelmingly negative. Sara Nelson, president of the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA, said anything short of a ban on calls is “reckless.” Flight attendants have said previously that they fear the calls could lead to fights between
passengers who want to make calls and passengers who don’t want to listen to the conversations. “It threatens aviation security and increases the likelihood of conflict in the skies. It threatens safety for crews and passengers,” Nelson said. However, the U.S. airlines’ trade group opposes a government ban on in-flight calls. “We have long held that this was not a matter for DOT to regulate, and we believe airlines should be able to determine what services can be safely offered in flight and make those decisions based on what is in the best interests of their passengers and crewmembers,” a spokeswoman for Airlines for America, Kathy Grannis Allen, said by email. Southwest Airlines and Alaska Airlines said they have no plans to allow voice calls. “Our customers have expressed concerns regarding the potentially disruptive nature of in-flight voice calls,” said Southwest spokesman Brian Parrish. Alaska Airlines spokeswoman Bobbie Egan said the carrier surveyed passengers a few years ago and got “a strong reaction” that they didn’t want calls. A Delta Air Lines spokeswoman noted that the carrier has opposed voice calls for several years. United Airlines said it was reviewing the proposal and would listen to the views of customers and employees. American referred questions to the trade group. JetBlue did not have an immediate comment. The fast-growing social network for millennials has come a long way since its founder Evan Spiegel dropped out of Stanford University in 2012, three classes shy of graduation. His goal at the time was to create a snappy way for people to send photos, videos and messages — all of which would disappear just 10 seconds after viewing. Snapchat cut a sharp contrast to Facebook and other social networks, which encouraged people to share and share often — even those spontaneous moments they might come to regret the next morning or at the next job interview. Snapchat, by contrast, let people “show and share things that they do not want to last on the internet as a permanent
record,” said Ira Kalb, a marketing and branding professor at the University of Southern California. That feature, however, quickly associated the company with “sexting,” the sharing of sexually explicit photos through cellphone messaging. Had Snapchat done nothing else, it might well have faded quickly itself, as such fads often do. Instead, Snapchat showed a knack for evolving as its users did. It’s now a full-featured messaging service popular with millennials and big brands alike. It even rebranded as Snap Inc. and now calls itself “a camera company.” Now it’s hoping to make itself into a big winner on Wall Street as well. TABANAN - Minister of Tourism, Arief Yahya, explained some time ago that tourism and the ‘creative industry’ are the two sectors that Indoneisa could compete well in globally. China’s strength is certainly labour for manufacturing and Singapore is storng in terms of trade and investment, but Indonesia has great potential in terms of tourism and the creative sector. Both of these sectors already contribute the largest amount to Indonesia’s foregin exchange earnings. Tourism, coupled with the creative industry, said Yahya have a tremendous potential to improve local people’s income and state revenues. Head of the Tabanan development planning board (Bappeda), I.B. Wiratmaja, said on Monday (Dec. 12) that the vision for Tabanan is to develop agriculutre as well as creative industry-based tourism there. Tabanan as a region with extensive farmlands, unique cultural practices and both mountain and beaches that serve as tourist destinations, means that it is an ideal place to develop creative economy-based tourism, he said. Wiratmaja admitted that Tabanan still requires considerable time and effort in order to develop creative industry-based tourism successfully. Currently, Tabanan the focus is on village-owned enterprise (BUMDes). “We continue to give guidance and support to our BUMDes’ so that they can develop and become independat. Once this is achieved we will develop out tourism concept so that the creative industries here can be branded for tourism” said Wiratmaja. He added that if tourist destinations are developed then creative industries will be insopiored to make wuality products that can comete on the market and supply the needs of tourism in general. BUMDes and local businesse will develop and become marketing agents for the products of the creative industries, he explained. Currently there are many so called tourism villages in Tabanan but they mostly offer cultiural and nature tourism. “Products from creative industries have yet ot become the main focus” , said Wiratmaja who added that a long process is required in order to have products from the creative industries reach the same position that culture and nature currently occupy. Several creative products are already being produced in Tabanan including ingke (woven coconut rib plates) from Baturiti, woven cloth from Marga and Pupuan, shell bowls and carvings from Marga, processed leak (magic) coffee and black rice from Jatiluwih and many other products that have the potential to boost advance the creative indusstry on the future. Legislator has it dismantled, secretary not read bylaw on smoking-free area
DENPASAR - Regional Bylaw No.10/2011 on smoke-free areas refers to a room or area where smoking is prohibited. However, in the northern part of the lobby of the Bali House of Representatives a glass walled smoking room is been built and has reaped criticism the legislator who has formerly drafted the by-law on smoke-free areas.
“I absolutely protested it. The regional bylaw on the smoke-free areas prohibits it. All government offices must be non-smoking areas. How are we suppose to oversee the implementation of this by-law if the Bali House of Representatives violates the stipulations?” asked Chairman of Commission IV of the Bali House of Representatives, Nyoman Parta, in Denpasar on Saturday (Dec. 10). Parta asserted that the smoking room under construction should be dismantled. When contacted separately, Secretary of the Bali House of Representatives, I Wayan Suarjana, admitted that he had just read the contents of the bylaw and confirmed that workplaces including government offices, civilian, military and police must all be non-smoking areas. “But I thought about the difficulty in banning smoking so we decided to make a special room so that people would be more disciplined in adhering to the bylaw”, he explained.
So far, added Suarjana, the sanitation team of the Environment Agency continues to find cigarette butts within the parliament house, which smears the reputation of the legislators with regards to sanitation. “Therefore, in reaction to this, I thought about how to resolve the problem so that this would no longer be a problem in the future. I do apologize, I had not fully read the regulation on non-smoking areas. With regards to the regulation, there should be no smoking room, however in terms of people’s daily habits, it is quite difficult to enforce”, he said. Suarjana said that he would be reporting to the leadership of the Bali House of Representatives on Tuesday (Dec. 13). If constructing a special smoking room is indeed prohibited, the room that is almost completed will be dismantled. However, there is another option which would be to move the smoking room to the backyard of the Bali House of Representatives. “If it is permitted to in the backyard, then we can just designate the gazebo as a smoking area. I will coordination with relevant parties first. If this option is permissible as a way to disuaed people from smoking within the house, then yes…I will move the smoking area. If not, well we will cancel the whole project and the budget will be returned to the treasury”, he concluded. (kmb32)

Four villages in Mengwi hit by floods
MANGUPURA - Heavy rains accompanied by strong winds on Saturday (Dec. 10) caused flooding in a number of villages in Mengwi. The Badung disaster mitigation agency (BPBD) came to the sites of the five villages most affected by floods, namely; Buduk, Abianbase, Tangeb and Tumbakbayuh. The most severe flooding occurred at Buduk village where so much water overflowed onto main road of Tampak Kerep hamlet, that vehicles could not pass. Two homes were also inundated. The main road in Bernasi hamlet was also severly flooded, and home appliances could be seen floating away after a few homes were inundated. The torrential downpour that caused the river to overflow, caused one houses’ compound to crumble. Similar condition also occurred at Sengguan hamlet. Road access to the bridge at Buduk was hampered by flood waters and Taman Beji Temple was flooded up to five meters. The leading to the temple were severly damaged, the revetment of the irrigation channel collapsed and the highway cracked eroded by the overflowing water. Pitra Beji Temple located at Pasekan hamlet was also inundated in five ffet of water. Road access to Taman Umadewi Residence was cut off by the swift surge of water that reached approximately three meters high. Just like in Tengah hamlet, the overflowing river water covered the road to the east of Buduk’s headman’s office and the homes of 11 local residents were also inundated with water. Irrigation Division Head of the Badung Highways and Irrigation Agency, Anak Agung Dalam, said that the floods that occurred at Buduk village in the area of Mengwi were caused purely by the heavy rains of the past week. As observed, the irrigation channels in the flooded areas are still functioning normally. “We are surprised as thisis the first time that it floods there (Buduk—Ed). We have never change the irrigation channels. Incidentally there is pavement project in the area, so the garbage dumped there could not be washed downstream. The garbage did get stuck” confirmed Gung Dalem on Monday

Chinese military aircraft on Saturday flew between Japan’s Okinawa and Miyako islands, and over waterways near self-ruled Taiwan - seen by Beijing as a renegade province - as part of long-range exercises, Taiwan said. Chinese defence ministry spokesman Yang Yujun said in a statement on Saturday that two Japanese F-15 fighter jets flew over the Miyako Strait and conducted “close range interference”, firing decoy flares and “jeopardizing the security of Chinese aircraft and pilots”. Yang said China had grave concerns and lodged a protest over the behaviour of the Japanese aircraft during what he called “routine” drills in international waters. But Japan rejected China’s assertion. “I have received a report from the defence minister that the Japanese planes did not conduct any close-range interference toward the Chinese military planes ... or threaten the safety of Chinese
military planes or its personnel,” Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said. “The fact that China’s military unilaterally announced something clearly different from the facts is extremely regrettable and harms the improvement of relations between Japan and China, and we have strictly protested to the Chinese side,” he said. Suga said Japan would watch the actions of the Chinese military, “which are expanding and increasing”, and make every effort towards “firmly protecting our country’s land, sea and air space and, in accordance with international and domestic law, take strict measures against any invasion of our airspace”. And it seemed it would stay that way heading into the 2017 election, until Key shocked the nation last week by resigning. English was chosen as the new leader by the conservative National Party caucus after two other candidates for the job withdrew last week. A practicing Roman Catholic, English is more conservative than Key on social issues. He is opposed to abortion and euthanasia, although he said Monday that he’s changed his mind on gay marriage, which he voted against when it was legalized in New Zealand three years ago. “Just seeing the impact it’s had with couples, I think it doesn’t erode marriage,” he said. “In some ways, it’s an affirmation of the concept.” English said he won’t use his new role to try to influence policy on such issues, which are often left to the conscience of individual lawmakers rather than voted on by
party affiliation. In some ways, English embodies the qualities that many New Zealanders value, casting himself as a down-to-earth rural bloke, a father-of-six who believes in hard work and steps into the limelight with some reluctance. But his history is more complicated. He studied commerce and then literature at university, graduating with an honors degree. He did work briefly as a farmer but has been a politician for most of his career, after he was first elected to Parliament 26 years ago. He rose to become leader of his party in 2001 and led them to a disastrous defeat in an election the following year. The National Party gained just 21 percent of the vote, its worst-ever showing. After he was replaced as leader in 2003, it seemed his star had faded. But he learned from that defeat, he said. This time, he has his economic record to highlight. After becoming finance minister in 2008, English helped the nation weather the global downturn and has since helped return annual GDP growth to more than 3 percent and unemployment
to below 5 percent. He’s put a lot of emphasis on getting the government books into shape and has managed to return small budget surpluses over the past couple of years. His economic platform remains more prudent than exciting. “In the coming months and years we will focus on building the roads, public transport, schools and houses needed to support a strong economy and a growing population,” English said. “We’ll also focus on better incomes for households, safer communities, and smarter government support for the most vulnerable.” One of his biggest challenges will be curbing runaway house prices which have made it difficult for working families to buy homes, especially in the biggest city, Auckland. English will also find it hard to emulate his predecessor’s ability to charm other leaders and elevate New Zealand’s role in world affairs. Key played golf with President Barack Obama and helped New Zealand secure a temporary seat on the U.N. Security Council. (rtr)

Fed turns to Trump agenda with rate hike nearly in the bag
WASHINGTON - The Federal Reserve inaugurates the Trump era this week with a near-certain interest rate increase and new economic forecasts providing a first glimpse into whether the U.S. election has reshaped the central bank’s growth and inflation outlook. Fed fund futures show a 97 percent probability that the Fed will lift rates by a quarter of a percentage point at the end of its two-day policy meeting on Wednesday, according to the CME Group. All 120 economists in a Reuters poll expect a rate hike in the wake of a string of solid U.S. economic reports. More telling will be whether the stock market rally and jump in bond yields triggered by Trump’s Nov. 8 victory will push the Fed to an inflection point of its own and a higher projected pace of rate increases for 2017 and beyond. The Republican businessman is inheriting a good economy, one that grew by 3.2 percent in the third quarter, the fastest pace in two years. There are, however, concerns that his plan to reduce taxes, cut regulation and increase infrastructure spending could not just boost the economy but also fuel higher inflation. Since first published in 2012, the Fed’s quarterly “dot plot” of projected interest rates has generally moved in one direction - down - and any post-election change will show whether policymakers expect Trump’s policies to shake things up. As of September, Fed officials’ median projection was for two rate increases next year and a long run
“neutral” level of 2.6 percent. A rate increase this week would be the first since last December and only the second since the 2007-2009 financial crisis. “Their path is going to move up faster and a little sooner,” said Steve Rick, chief economist for CUNA Mutual Group. He said the economy was running at its potential, and that was the Fed’s cue to “exit stage right” and steadily move rates to normal. Fed officials have long hoped that other government policies would take the place of monetary engineering, which some believe may have lost its effectiveness in lifting economic growth. They have warned in recent weeks that any new government spending should specifically be designed to boost productivity in an economy that is already near full employment and facing a high public debt burden. The Fed’s new forecasts will indicate if policymakers feel that the monetary-to-fiscal handover is on the horizon, or need more time for the Trump administration’s plans to become more detailed and move through Congress. Fed Chair Janet Yellen is scheduled to hold a press conference at 2:30 p.m. (1930 GMT) on Wednesday to elaborate on the economic outlook and policy statement. She’ll have a broad set of issues to cover since her last press conference in September - from the Federal Open Market Committee meeting itself, to the likelihood she will be replaced in early 2018 and the risks she foresees from the Trump agenda. BEIJING - China said on Monday it had launched a dispute resolution case at the World Trade Organisation over the surrogate country approach used by the United States and European Union to calculate anti-dumping measures against Chinese exports. When China joined the WTO in 2001, it agreed to let WTO members treat it as a non-market economy when assessing dumping duties for 15 years. That gave trade partners the advantage of using a third country’s prices to gauge whether China was selling its goods below market value. But that clause expired on Dec. 11, and China has demanded that countries abide by the agreement. U.S. Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker said in November the time was “not ripe” for the United States to change the way it evaluates whether China has achieved market economy status,
and there was no international trade rules requiring changes in the way U.S. anti-dumping duties are calculated. China’s Commerce Ministry said in a statement on its website that 15 years on, all WTO members had an obligation to stop using the surrogate country approach. “Regretfully, the United States and European Union have yet to fulfil this obligation,” the ministry said. Separately, a ministry official said in another statement a U.S. investigation into what it regards as Chinese dumping of plywood products launched last week amounted to abuse of emergency
trade relief measures. The United States and European Union are some of the biggest levellers of anti-dumping measures under this process against China. The measures have seriously affected exports and employment for Chinese firms, the ministry added. The case China has lodged is a normal way of resolving trade disputes, and it has every right to do so, it said. “China reserves the right under WTO rules to resolutely defend its legal rights,” it added, without elaborating. The United States has repeatedly argued that China’s market reforms have fallen short of expectations, especially in aluminium and steel, where state intervention has led to oversupply and overcapacity, threatening industries around the world. Pidie Jaya earthquake brings back memories of 2004 tsunami
JAKARTA - While many people were asleep, a strong shallow earthquake rocked Pidie Jaya and neighboring districts in Aceh Province, at 5:03 a.m. local time, on Dec 7. Following the tremor, they rushed out of their buildings and tried to reach higher ground, as the quake was felt strongly and had raised memories of the deadly tsunami that had devastated Aceh in December 2004. One of the locals even said she felt the earthquake had been stronger than that of 2004. However, this time, there was no tsunami after the tremor, which the US Geological Survey said struck
just offshore at a depth of 8km. Indonesias Meteorological, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that the epicenter of the 6.5-magnitude earthquake was at 5.19 degrees northern latitude and 96.36 degrees eastern longitude, at a depth of 10km on land, some 18km northeast of Pidie Jaya, or 106km southeast of Banda Aceh, the capital of Aceh Province. BMKG said the quakes intensity was a VII-VIII MMI (Marcelli
Modified Intensity) in Pidie Jaya. It also recorded 74 aftershocks that were felt by inhabitants of the districts of Pidie Jaya, Pidie, Aceh Besar, Sabang, Bireun, and Lhokseumawe. The tremors have traumatized locals who are reluctant to stay indoors. A total of 103 deaths have been confirmed so far. Some 8 thousand inhabitants were seriously or slightly injured in the disaster, and they were evacuated to receive medical treatment. The victims are residents of the sub-districts of Pante Raja, Bandar
Dua, Tringgadeng, Meureudu, Bandar Baru, and Alee Glee. Social Affairs Minister Khofifah Indar Parawansa promised to help heal victims who have been traumatized by the disaster. Indonesia, the worlds largest archipelago, is prone to earthquakes due to its location on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” an arc of volcanoes and fault lines in the Pacific Basin. Britain to adopt new anti-Semitism definition to fight hate crime
LONDON - Britain said on Monday it would become one of the first countries to adopt an international definition of antiSemitism to clamp down on hate crime after an increase in the number of reported incidents targeting Jews. Adopting the definition formulated in May by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) is meant to make it harder for people to get away with discriminatory or prejudiced behaviour due to unclear or differing definitions of what anti-Semitism actually is. “It means there will be one definition of anti-Semitism - in essence, language or behaviour that displays hatred towards Jews because they are Jews - and anyone guilty of that will be called out on it,” Prime Minister Theresa May said in pre-released extracts from a speech she was due to deliver. No details were immediately available as to where the speech would be made. The government is due to publish its response on Tuesday to an inquiry into anti-Semitism conducted by a committee of lawmakers and another report published
in 2015. The IHRA definition adopted by the group’s 31 member countries, including Britain, reads: “Anti-Semitism is a certain perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews. Rhetorical and physical manifestations of anti-Semitism are directed toward Jewish or non-Jewish individuals and/or their property, toward Jewish community institutions and religious facilities.” Tackling anti-Semitism has risen up the political agenda in Britain, home to the world’s fifth largest Jewish population, as those incidents rose over the last two years. In the first half of this year, the number of incidents recorded by the Community Security Trust (CST), which provides security advice to Britain’s 270,000 Jews, rose by 11 percent. The CST said most of the anti-
Semitic incidents in the first half of the year took place in April, May and June when the issue of discrimination against Jews was in the news. Politicians have warned about rising levels of hate crimes due to the Brexit vote, but it is difficult to establish the exact reason behind any increase and whether better relations between police and minorities account for more reporting. One Labour Jewish lawmaker, Luciana Berger, reported in April she had received thousands of online abusive messages including threats to rape her. Last week, a man was jailed for subjecting Berger to what Britain’s Crown Prosecution Service described as “highly offensive, hateful and racist articles” in 2014 and 2015. The opposition Labour party has launched an inquiry into whether the party had a problem in its ranks with anti-Semitism because of statements by former London mayor Ken Livingstone to Oxford University students. Romanians vote leftists back into power, a year after chasing them out
BUCHAREST - Romania’s leftist Social Democrats have won parliamentary elections with more than 45 percent of the vote, a year after protesters drove them from office in a spasm of anger over corruption and lack of accountability. Partial results on Monday showed the leftist PSD party and its junior ally ALDE, on just under 6 percent, will command an outright majority after an election that underscores the growing divide between older voters tired of austerity and the mostly urban young, who are losing trust in the prospect for reforms. The result is a triumph for PSD leader Liviu Dragnea, who has remained in his post despite being found guilty of electoral fraud earlier this year and receiving a two-year suspended sentence. The new government’s progress will be closely watched by Romania’s European Union peers because of the PSD’s softer stance against chronic corruption and its propensity for higher public spending, which could risk breaching EU budget limits. The party campaigned on a promise to cut taxes and raise spending on public wages and pensions, in the hope of winning the support of the mostly poor rural electorate. Turnout figures suggested many younger people had not bothered to vote. Dragnea had told reporters in June that Romanians must choose between “better bread or handcuffs”, implying that anti-corruption drives could not co-exist with higher wages, development and better living conditions. LONDON - Technical head Paddy Lowe could be about to follow newly-retired Formula One world champion Nico Rosberg out of the door at dominant Mercedes. The motorsport.com website reported multiple sources “with good knowledge of the situation” indicating that Lowe, who has helped Mercedes to win three successive constructors’ titles, was set to join rivals Williams. Mercedes, who were rocked by Rosberg’s retirement announcement only five days after he won the title at the end of last month in Abu Dhabi, had no comment on rumours that have been rife since September. There was no immediate response from Williams, who use Mercedes engines and whose Finnish driver Valtteri Bottas has become the bookmakers’ favourite to replace Rosberg next season. Lowe started his F1 career with former world champions Williams in 1987, and spent six years there. The team finished fifth overall this year. Williams current technical head Pat Symonds is 63 and told Reuters in a recent interview that he would still be at the team next year, while also indicating that he was
looking to reduce his workload. “I love motorsport and the engineering of it but it is relentless. It really is intense. I’m still working 60 hours a week and there comes a time when I’d like to do other things as well,” he said. Lowe’s contract at Mercedes is due to expire at the end of the year, according to reports in Britain and Germany, and the 53-year-old’s future has been the subject of considerable speculation. McLaren, his previous employers, last week ruled out a move for the Briton amid reports that Lowe was poised to accept an offer from a rival team. “We have absolutely no plans to re-hire Paddy, since we are entirely satisfied with our current senior engineering management team,” said a spokesman. Lowe is one of three top managers running Mercedes -- the others being shareholders Toto Wolff and Niki Lauda, who is the non-executive chairman. 2022 World Cup host Qatar loosens rules for migrant workers DUBAI — Qatar announced Monday it is introducing long-expected reforms to policies governing its vast foreign-labor force, though the changes still require workers to seek clearance from their bosses before leaving the country. The new policies follow years of intense criticism from labor and human rights activists over working conditions in Qatar. The natural gas-rich country is in the midst of a torrid building boom tied to its hosting of the 2022 World Cup. Critics say Qatar’s long-standing “kafala” sponsorship system binding workers to their employer leaves migrants open to abuse, and in some cases can amount to forced labor. Qatar touted the reforms as abolishing the kafala system altogether. Rights groups say the changes fall far short of what is needed to protect the armies of mostly Asian low-wage workers transforming the tiny country. A statement released by the Ministry of Administrative Development, Labor and Social Affairs said the changes are intended to ensure “greater flexibility, freedom and protection” to the more than 2.1 million workers in Qatar. The minister responsible for labor, Issa bin Saad al-Jafali alNuaimi, said Qatar welcomes
constructive criticism and he urged outsiders to give the law time to take root before drawing any conclusions. He said the ministry is boosting its monitoring efforts and hiring more labor inspectors to enforce compliance. “We are doing this because we believe it is the right thing to do and because it provides tangible new benefits to expatriate workers,” al-Nuaimi said. Joshua to fight Klitschko in April after easy defence
LONDON - Britain’s Anthony Joshua set up an April showdown with veteran heavyweight Wladimir Klitschko on Saturday after retaining his IBF world title with a clinical third round stoppage of outclassed American Eric Molina in Manchester. After two probing opening rounds, 2012 Olympic superheavyweight champion Joshua sent his opponent crashing to the canvas for his 18th win inside the distance in as many professional fights. Molina, 34, clambered unsteadily back to his feet as the count reached eight, but the referee stepped in again to stop the fight after two minutes and two seconds of the round with a technical knockout declared. The Texan had fought for the world title once before, losing to Deontay Wilder for the WBC belt in 2015. Moments after the fight, promoter Eddie Hearn stepped into the ring to announce an April 29 bout against Ukrainian Klitschko at London’s Wembley Stadium for the “unified heavyweight championship of the world”. That can be taken as hyperbole, much as Hearn’s assertion that it would be the “biggest fight in British boxing history”, with New Zealander Joseph Parker the newlycrowned WBO champion while American Wilder still holding the WBC belt. AMLAPURA - Lipah Bay located 3km south-east of Amed, this quiet little black sand bay is home to the wreck of a 20M steel freighter. The wreck lies in very shallow water, 6-12M, between a reef and the sand bottom, and is encrusted with sponges, gorgonians and coral bushes. Visibility can be greatly reduced if there is a current or any wave-action, however the bay is well-protected on both side. The sloping reef is spectacular, particularly in the bottom (15-20M) section, with soft corals, gorgonians and sponges. The reef continues in patches to 40M+. The shallowest section of reef (unaffected by the coral-bleaching after El Nino in 1998) contains table and staghorn corals and is home to clouds of damsels and anthias as well as schools of many kinds of fish. LONDON - Technical head Paddy Lowe could be about to follow newly-retired Formula One world champion Nico Rosberg out of the door at dominant Mercedes. The motorsport.com website reported multiple sources “with good knowledge of the situation” indicating that Lowe, who has helped Mercedes to win three successive constructors’ titles, was set to join rivals Williams. Mercedes, who were rocked by Rosberg’s retirement announcement only five days after he won the title at the end of last month in Abu Dhabi, had no comment on rumours that have been rife since September. There was no immediate response from Williams, who use Mercedes engines and whose Finnish driver Valtteri Bottas has become the bookmakers’ favourite to replace Rosberg next season. Lowe started his F1 career with former world champions Williams in 1987, and spent six years there. The team finished fifth overall this year. Williams current technical head Pat Symonds is 63 and told Reuters in a recent interview that he would still be at the team next year, while also indicating that he was
looking to reduce his workload. “I love motorsport and the engineering of it but it is relentless. It really is intense. I’m still working 60 hours a week and there comes a time when I’d like to do other things as well,” he said. Lowe’s contract at Mercedes is due to expire at the end of the year, according to reports in Britain and Germany, and the 53-year-old’s future has been the subject of considerable speculation. McLaren, his previous employers, last week ruled out a move for the Briton amid reports that Lowe was poised to accept an offer from a rival team. “We have absolutely no plans to re-hire Paddy, since we are entirely satisfied with our current senior engineering management team,” said a spokesman. Lowe is one of three top managers running Mercedes -- the others being shareholders Toto Wolff and Niki Lauda, who is the non-executive chairman. Britain to adopt new anti-Semitism definition to fight hate crime
LONDON - Britain said on Monday it would become one of the first countries to adopt an international definition of antiSemitism to clamp down on hate crime after an increase in the number of reported incidents targeting Jews. Adopting the definition formulated in May by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) is meant to make it harder for people to get away with discriminatory or prejudiced behaviour due to unclear or differing definitions of what anti-Semitism actually is. “It means there will be one definition of anti-Semitism - in essence, language or behaviour that displays hatred towards Jews because they are Jews - and anyone guilty of that will be called out on it,” Prime Minister Theresa May said in pre-released extracts from a speech she was due to deliver. No details were immediately available as to where the speech would be made. The government is due to publish its response on Tuesday to an inquiry into anti-Semitism conducted by a committee of lawmakers and another report published
in 2015. The IHRA definition adopted by the group’s 31 member countries, including Britain, reads: “Anti-Semitism is a certain perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews. Rhetorical and physical manifestations of anti-Semitism are directed toward Jewish or non-Jewish individuals and/or their property, toward Jewish community institutions and religious facilities.” Tackling anti-Semitism has risen up the political agenda in Britain, home to the world’s fifth largest Jewish population, as those incidents rose over the last two years. In the first half of this year, the number of incidents recorded by the Community Security Trust (CST), which provides security advice to Britain’s 270,000 Jews, rose by 11 percent. The CST said most of the anti-
Semitic incidents in the first half of the year took place in April, May and June when the issue of discrimination against Jews was in the news. Politicians have warned about rising levels of hate crimes due to the Brexit vote, but it is difficult to establish the exact reason behind any increase and whether better relations between police and minorities account for more reporting. One Labour Jewish lawmaker, Luciana Berger, reported in April she had received thousands of online abusive messages including threats to rape her. Last week, a man was jailed for subjecting Berger to what Britain’s Crown Prosecution Service described as “highly offensive, hateful and racist articles” in 2014 and 2015. The opposition Labour party has launched an inquiry into whether the party had a problem in its ranks with anti-Semitism because of statements by former London mayor Ken Livingstone to Oxford University students. Romanians vote leftists back into power, a year after chasing them out
BUCHAREST - Romania’s leftist Social Democrats have won parliamentary elections with more than 45 percent of the vote, a year after protesters drove them from office in a spasm of anger over corruption and lack of accountability. Partial results on Monday showed the leftist PSD party and its junior ally ALDE, on just under 6 percent, will command an outright majority after an election that underscores the growing divide between older voters tired of austerity and the mostly urban young, who are losing trust in the prospect for reforms. The result is a triumph for PSD leader Liviu Dragnea, who has remained in his post despite being found guilty of electoral fraud earlier this year and receiving a two-year suspended sentence. The new government’s progress will be closely watched by Romania’s European Union peers because of the PSD’s softer stance against chronic corruption and its propensity for higher public spending, which could risk breaching EU budget limits. The party campaigned on a promise to cut taxes and raise spending on public wages and pensions, in the hope of winning the support of the mostly poor rural electorate. Turnout figures suggested many younger people had not bothered to vote. Dragnea had told reporters in June that Romanians must choose between “better bread or handcuffs”, implying that anti-corruption drives could not co-exist with higher wages, development and better living conditions. Prosecutors have gone after lawmak-
ers and ministers across all parties. The PSD was forced from power in November 2015 when a deadly fire in a nightclub that lacked emergency exits and safety permits sparked nationwide anger over politicians’ failure to stamp out abuses. Many saw it as emblematic of a climate of impunity in Romania, a former communist country that has been dogged by corruption for decades. For the past year, the country has been run by a technocrat government of experts. The Central Electoral Bureau said results from more than 80 percent of polling stations showed the centre-right National Liberal Party, the main centrist grouping, was trailing the PSD on about 20 percent. Newcomer and anti-graft party Save Romania Union got just over 9 percent. Once official results are finalised and the new parliament is sworn in, President Klaus Iohannis will likely call parties for consultations before nominating a prime minister. Commentators expect this to happen around Dec. 20. Several leading leftists including the powerful mayor of the capital Bucharest said party leader Dragnea should be the next prime minister. Fed turns to Trump agenda with rate hike nearly in the bag
WASHINGTON - The Federal Reserve inaugurates the Trump era this week with a near-certain interest rate increase and new economic forecasts providing a first glimpse into whether the U.S. election has reshaped the central bank’s growth and inflation outlook. Fed fund futures show a 97 percent probability that the Fed will lift rates by a quarter of a percentage point at the end of its two-day policy meeting on Wednesday, according to the CME Group. All 120 economists in a Reuters poll expect a rate hike in the wake of a string of solid U.S. economic reports. More telling will be whether the stock market rally and jump in bond yields triggered by Trump’s Nov. 8 victory will push the Fed to an inflection point of its own and a higher projected pace of rate increases for 2017 and beyond. The Republican businessman is inheriting a good economy, one that grew by 3.2 percent in the third quarter, the fastest pace in two years. There are, however, concerns that his plan to reduce taxes, cut regulation and increase infrastructure spending could not just boost the economy but also fuel higher inflation. Since first published in 2012, the Fed’s quarterly “dot plot” of projected interest rates has generally moved in one direction - down - and any post-election change will show whether policymakers expect Trump’s policies to shake things up. As of September, Fed officials’ median projection was for two rate increases next year and a long run
“neutral” level of 2.6 percent. A rate increase this week would be the first since last December and only the second since the 2007-2009 financial crisis. “Their path is going to move up faster and a little sooner,” said Steve Rick, chief economist for CUNA Mutual Group. He said the economy was running at its potential, and that was the Fed’s cue to “exit stage right” and steadily move rates to normal. Fed officials have long hoped that other government policies would take the place of monetary engineering, which some believe may have lost its effectiveness in lifting economic growth. They have warned in recent weeks that any new government spending should specifically be designed to boost productivity in an economy that is already near full employment and facing a high public debt burden. The Fed’s new forecasts will indicate if policymakers feel that the monetary-to-fiscal handover is on the horizon, or need more time for the Trump administration’s plans to become more detailed and move through Congress. Fed Chair Janet Yellen is scheduled to hold a press conference at 2:30 p.m. (1930 GMT) on Wednesday to elaborate on the economic outlook and policy statement. She’ll have a broad set of issues to cover since her last press conference in September - from the Federal Open Market Committee meeting itself, to the likelihood she will be replaced in early 2018 and the risks she foresees from the Trump agenda. BEIJING - China said on Monday it had launched a dispute resolution case at the World Trade Organisation over the surrogate country approach used by the United States and European Union to calculate anti-dumping measures against Chinese exports. When China joined the WTO in 2001, it agreed to let WTO members treat it as a non-market economy when assessing dumping duties for 15 years. That gave trade partners the advantage of using a third country’s prices to gauge whether China was selling its goods below market value. But that clause expired on Dec. 11, and China has demanded that countries abide by the agreement. U.S. Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker said in November the time was “not ripe” for the United States to change the way it evaluates whether China has achieved market economy status,
and there was no international trade rules requiring changes in the way U.S. anti-dumping duties are calculated. China’s Commerce Ministry said in a statement on its website that 15 years on, all WTO members had an obligation to stop using the surrogate country approach. “Regretfully, the United States and European Union have yet to fulfil this obligation,” the ministry said. Separately, a ministry official said in another statement a U.S. investigation into what it regards as Chinese dumping of plywood products launched last week amounted to abuse of emergency
trade relief measures. The United States and European Union are some of the biggest levellers of anti-dumping measures under this process against China. The measures have seriously affected exports and employment for Chinese firms, the ministry added. The case China has lodged is a normal way of resolving trade disputes, and it has every right to do so, it said. “China reserves the right under WTO rules to resolutely defend its legal rights,” it added, without elaborating. The United States has repeatedly argued that China’s market reforms have fallen short of expectations, especially in aluminium and steel, where state intervention has led to oversupply and overcapacity, threatening industries around the world. Pidie Jaya earthquake brings back memories of 2004 tsunami
JAKARTA - While many people were asleep, a strong shallow earthquake rocked Pidie Jaya and neighboring districts in Aceh Province, at 5:03 a.m. local time, on Dec 7. Following the tremor, they rushed out of their buildings and tried to reach higher ground, as the quake was felt strongly and had raised memories of the deadly tsunami that had devastated Aceh in December 2004. One of the locals even said she felt the earthquake had been stronger than that of 2004. However, this time, there was no tsunami after the tremor, which the US Geological Survey said struck
just offshore at a depth of 8km. Indonesias Meteorological, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that the epicenter of the 6.5-magnitude earthquake was at 5.19 degrees northern latitude and 96.36 degrees eastern longitude, at a depth of 10km on land, some 18km northeast of Pidie Jaya, or 106km southeast of Banda Aceh, the capital of Aceh Province. BMKG said the quakes intensity was a VII-VIII MMI (Marcelli
Modified Intensity) in Pidie Jaya. It also recorded 74 aftershocks that were felt by inhabitants of the districts of Pidie Jaya, Pidie, Aceh Besar, Sabang, Bireun, and Lhokseumawe. The tremors have traumatized locals who are reluctant to stay indoors. A total of 103 deaths have been confirmed so far. Some 8 thousand inhabitants were seriously or slightly injured in the disaster, and they were evacuated to receive medical treatment. The victims are residents of the sub-districts of Pante Raja, Bandar
Dua, Tringgadeng, Meureudu, Bandar Baru, and Alee Glee. Social Affairs Minister Khofifah Indar Parawansa promised to help heal victims who have been traumatized by the disaster. Indonesia, the worlds largest archipelago, is prone to earthquakes due to its location on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” an arc of volcanoes and fault lines in the Pacific Basin. Four villages in Mengwi hit by floods
MANGUPURA - Heavy rains accompanied by strong winds on Saturday (Dec. 10) caused flooding in a number of villages in Mengwi. The Badung disaster mitigation agency (BPBD) came to the sites of the five villages most affected by floods, namely; Buduk, Abianbase, Tangeb and Tumbakbayuh. The most severe flooding occurred at Buduk village where so much water overflowed onto main road of Tampak Kerep hamlet, that vehicles could not pass. Two homes were also inundated. The main road in Bernasi hamlet was also severly flooded, and home appliances could be seen floating away after a few homes were inundated. The torrential downpour that caused the river to overflow, caused one houses’ compound to crumble. Similar condition also occurred at Sengguan hamlet. Road access to the bridge at Buduk was hampered by flood waters and Taman Beji Temple was flooded up to five meters. The leading to the temple were severly damaged, the revetment of the irrigation channel collapsed and the highway cracked eroded by the overflowing water. Pitra Beji Temple located at Pasekan hamlet was also inundated in five ffet of water. Road access to Taman Umadewi Residence was cut off by the swift surge of water that reached approximately three meters high. Just like in Tengah hamlet, the overflowing river water covered the road to the east of Buduk’s headman’s office and the homes of 11 local residents were also inundated with water. Irrigation Division Head of the Badung Highways and Irrigation Agency, Anak Agung Dalam, said that the floods that occurred at Buduk village in the area of Mengwi were caused purely by the heavy rains of the past week. As observed, the irrigation channels in the flooded areas are still functioning normally. “We are surprised as thisis the first time that it floods there (Buduk—Ed). We have never change the irrigation channels. Incidentally there is pavement project in the area, so the garbage dumped there could not be washed downstream. The garbage did get stuck” confirmed Gung Dalem on Monday

Japan protests over China’s complaint about fighter jets
TOKYO - Japan said on Monday it had protested to China over a Chinese complaint that Japanese fighter jets had engaged in “dangerous and unprofessional” behaviour when they scrambled at the weekend as Chinese aircraft flew near Japanese islands.

Chinese military aircraft on Saturday flew between Japan’s Okinawa and Miyako islands, and over waterways near self-ruled Taiwan - seen by Beijing as a renegade province - as part of long-range exercises, Taiwan said. Chinese defence ministry spokesman Yang Yujun said in a statement on Saturday that two Japanese F-15 fighter jets flew over the Miyako Strait and conducted “close range interference”, firing decoy flares and “jeopardizing the security of Chinese aircraft and pilots”. Yang said China had grave concerns and lodged a protest over the behaviour of the Japanese aircraft during what he called “routine” drills in international waters. But Japan rejected China’s assertion. “I have received a report from the defence minister that the Japanese planes did not conduct any close-range interference toward the Chinese military planes ... or threaten the safety of Chinese
military planes or its personnel,” Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said. “The fact that China’s military unilaterally announced something clearly different from the facts is extremely regrettable and harms the improvement of relations between Japan and China, and we have strictly protested to the Chinese side,” he said. Suga said Japan would watch the actions of the Chinese military, “which are expanding and increasing”, and make every effort towards “firmly protecting our country’s land, sea and air space and, in accordance with international and domestic law, take strict measures against any invasion of our airspace”. And it seemed it would stay that way heading into the 2017 election, until Key shocked the nation last week by resigning. English was chosen as the new leader by the conservative National Party caucus after two other candidates for the job withdrew last week. A practicing Roman Catholic, English is more conservative than Key on social issues. He is opposed to abortion and euthanasia, although he said Monday that he’s changed his mind on gay marriage, which he voted against when it was legalized in New Zealand three years ago. “Just seeing the impact it’s had with couples, I think it doesn’t erode marriage,” he said. “In some ways, it’s an affirmation of the concept.” English said he won’t use his new role to try to influence policy on such issues, which are often left to the conscience of individual lawmakers rather than voted on by
party affiliation. In some ways, English embodies the qualities that many New Zealanders value, casting himself as a down-to-earth rural bloke, a father-of-six who believes in hard work and steps into the limelight with some reluctance. But his history is more complicated. He studied commerce and then literature at university, graduating with an honors degree. He did work briefly as a farmer but has been a politician for most of his career, after he was first elected to Parliament 26 years ago. He rose to become leader of his party in 2001 and led them to a disastrous defeat in an election the following year. The National Party gained just 21 percent of the vote, its worst-ever showing. After he was replaced as leader in 2003, it seemed his star had faded. But he learned from that defeat, he said. This time, he has his economic record to highlight. After becoming finance minister in 2008, English helped the nation weather the global downturn and has since helped return annual GDP growth to more than 3 percent and unemployment
to below 5 percent. He’s put a lot of emphasis on getting the government books into shape and has managed to return small budget surpluses over the past couple of years. His economic platform remains more prudent than exciting. “In the coming months and years we will focus on building the roads, public transport, schools and houses needed to support a strong economy and a growing population,” English said. “We’ll also focus on better incomes for households, safer communities, and smarter government support for the most vulnerable.” One of his biggest challenges will be curbing runaway house prices which have made it difficult for working families to buy homes, especially in the biggest city, Auckland. English will also find it hard to emulate his predecessor’s ability to charm other leaders and elevate New Zealand’s role in world affairs. Gov’t proposal envisions phone calls on airline flights
WASHINGTON — Airlines could let passengers make in-flight phone calls using Wi-Fi under a proposal from federal regulators.
Flight attendants and others have complained that the calls could be disruptive. But the Department of Transportation said Thursday that it envisioned allowing the calls if airlines tell all customers about the policy when they buy their tickets. That way, customers could make other travel arrangements if they feared sitting next to passengers chatting on their phones. There is a 60-day comment period, and the proposal leaves the door open to the possibility that federal officials could still impose an outright ban. The Federal Communications Commission prohibits passengers from making cellphone calls during flights, but not Wi-Fi calls. “Today’s proposal will ensure that air travelers are not unwillingly exposed to voice calls, as many of them are troubled over the idea of passengers talking on cell phones in flight,” Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said in a statement. In 2014, the department issued a request for public comments on the possibility of permitting the calls and the response was overwhelmingly negative. Sara Nelson, president of the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA, said anything short of a ban on calls is “reckless.” Flight attendants have said previously that they fear the calls could lead to fights between
passengers who want to make calls and passengers who don’t want to listen to the conversations. “It threatens aviation security and increases the likelihood of conflict in the skies. It threatens safety for crews and passengers,” Nelson said. However, the U.S. airlines’ trade group opposes a government ban on in-flight calls. “We have long held that this was not a matter for DOT to regulate, and we believe airlines should be able to determine what services can be safely offered in flight and make those decisions based on what is in the best interests of their passengers and crewmembers,” a spokeswoman for Airlines for America, Kathy Grannis Allen, said by email. Southwest Airlines and Alaska Airlines said they have no plans to allow voice calls. “Our customers have expressed concerns regarding the potentially disruptive nature of in-flight voice calls,” said Southwest spokesman Brian Parrish. Alaska Airlines spokeswoman Bobbie Egan said the carrier surveyed passengers a few years ago and got “a strong reaction” that they didn’t want calls. A Delta Air Lines spokeswoman noted that the carrier has opposed voice calls for several years. United Airlines said it was reviewing the proposal and would listen to the views of customers and employees. American referred questions to the trade group. JetBlue did not have an immediate comment. The fast-growing social network for millennials has come a long way since its founder Evan Spiegel dropped out of Stanford University in 2012, three classes shy of graduation. His goal at the time was to create a snappy way for people to send photos, videos and messages — all of which would disappear just 10 seconds after viewing. Snapchat cut a sharp contrast to Facebook and other social networks, which encouraged people to share and share often — even those spontaneous moments they might come to regret the next morning or at the next job interview. Snapchat, by contrast, let people “show and share things that they do not want to last on the internet as a permanent
record,” said Ira Kalb, a marketing and branding professor at the University of Southern California. That feature, however, quickly associated the company with “sexting,” the sharing of sexually explicit photos through cellphone messaging. Had Snapchat done nothing else, it might well have faded quickly itself, as such fads often do. Instead, Snapchat showed a knack for evolving as its users did. It’s now a full-featured messaging service popular with millennials and big brands alike. It even rebranded as Snap Inc. and now calls itself “a camera company.” Now it’s hoping to make itself into a big winner on Wall Street as well. TABANAN - Minister of Tourism, Arief Yahya, explained some time ago that tourism and the ‘creative industry’ are the two sectors that Indoneisa could compete well in globally. China’s strength is certainly labour for manufacturing and Singapore is storng in terms of trade and investment, but Indonesia has great potential in terms of tourism and the creative sector. Both of these sectors already contribute the largest amount to Indonesia’s foregin exchange earnings. Tourism, coupled with the creative industry, said Yahya have a tremendous potential to improve local people’s income and state revenues. Head of the Tabanan development planning board (Bappeda), I.B. Wiratmaja, said on Monday (Dec. 12) that the vision for Tabanan is to develop agriculutre as well as creative industry-based tourism there. Tabanan as a region with extensive farmlands, unique cultural practices and both mountain and beaches that serve as tourist destinations, means that it is an ideal place to develop creative economy-based tourism, he said. Wiratmaja admitted that Tabanan still requires considerable time and effort in order to develop creative industry-based tourism successfully. Currently, Tabanan the focus is on village-owned enterprise (BUMDes). “We continue to give guidance and support to our BUMDes’ so that they can develop and become independat. Once this is achieved we will develop out tourism concept so that the creative industries here can be branded for tourism” said Wiratmaja. He added that if tourist destinations are developed then creative industries will be insopiored to make wuality products that can comete on the market and supply the needs of tourism in general. BUMDes and local businesse will develop and become marketing agents for the products of the creative industries, he explained. Currently there are many so called tourism villages in Tabanan but they mostly offer cultiural and nature tourism. “Products from creative industries have yet ot become the main focus” , said Wiratmaja who added that a long process is required in order to have products from the creative industries reach the same position that culture and nature currently occupy. Several creative products are already being produced in Tabanan including ingke (woven coconut rib plates) from Baturiti, woven cloth from Marga and Pupuan, shell bowls and carvings from Marga, processed leak (magic) coffee and black rice from Jatiluwih and many other products that have the potential to boost advance the creative indusstry on the future. Legislator has it dismantled, secretary not read bylaw on smoking-free area
DENPASAR - Regional Bylaw No.10/2011 on smoke-free areas refers to a room or area where smoking is prohibited. However, in the northern part of the lobby of the Bali House of Representatives a glass walled smoking room is been built and has reaped criticism the legislator who has formerly drafted the by-law on smoke-free areas.
“I absolutely protested it. The regional bylaw on the smoke-free areas prohibits it. All government offices must be non-smoking areas. How are we suppose to oversee the implementation of this by-law if the Bali House of Representatives violates the stipulations?” asked Chairman of Commission IV of the Bali House of Representatives, Nyoman Parta, in Denpasar on Saturday (Dec. 10). Parta asserted that the smoking room under construction should be dismantled. When contacted separately, Secretary of the Bali House of Representatives, I Wayan Suarjana, admitted that he had just read the contents of the bylaw and confirmed that workplaces including government offices, civilian, military and police must all be non-smoking areas. “But I thought about the difficulty in banning smoking so we decided to make a special room so that people would be more disciplined in adhering to the bylaw”, he explained.
So far, added Suarjana, the sanitation team of the Environment Agency continues to find cigarette butts within the parliament house, which smears the reputation of the legislators with regards to sanitation. “Therefore, in reaction to this, I thought about how to resolve the problem so that this would no longer be a problem in the future. I do apologize, I had not fully read the regulation on non-smoking areas. With regards to the regulation, there should be no smoking room, however in terms of people’s daily habits, it is quite difficult to enforce”, he said. Suarjana said that he would be reporting to the leadership of the Bali House of Representatives on Tuesday (Dec. 13). If constructing a special smoking room is indeed prohibited, the room that is almost completed will be dismantled. However, there is another option which would be to move the smoking room to the backyard of the Bali House of Representatives. “If it is permitted to in the backyard, then we can just designate the gazebo as a smoking area. I will coordination with relevant parties first. If this option is permissible as a way to disuaed people from smoking within the house, then yes…I will move the smoking area. If not, well we will cancel the whole project and the budget will be returned to the treasury”, he concluded. (kmb32)

Parliament request new SME food stalls
DENPASAR - The municipality of Denpasar’s annual Denpasar Festival (Denfest) that will stake place from December 28-31 this year was officially launched recently by the Minsitry of Tourism. Based on evaluations and input from previsouly years regarding some of the activities of the festival, Denpasar legislator I Made Sukarmana said on Monday (Dec 12) that some changes need to be made.
The culinary stands for example should be offered to people to have never participated in Denfest before, in order to encourage equity amongst the many culinary SMEs that operate in Denpasar.Sukarmana also expressed his great appreciation for the existence of Denfest but added that he has often heard criticism about the fact that the culinary stands are always the same and lack variety. He has therefore asked the organising committee to embrace a wider range of small culinary businesses who are also dedicated to preserving local cuisine. There are thousands of small busineses that fit this category, so more people should be given a chance to participate, he said, adding that otherwise it gives the impression that only those businesses whose owners are close with the festival organisers are chosen while others are not given a chance. Sukarmana went on to say that he hopes that organizers can be transparent in their selection of culinary participants and also be transparent in their presentation of the qualification required for participation. Furthermore, for those who do not qualify, the Industry and Commerce Agency or other relevant agencies should provide guidance and training so that culinary businesses that
aspire to participate in the festival may do so the following year. That way, he said, SMEs willl be able to develop regardless of where they are situated. Also this will provide a more diverse offering of foods for the event held in the area of Catur Muka every year. One SME owner, who asked to remain anonymous, explained that he was wanting to participate in this year’s Denfest, but when he went to the Regional Secretariat of Denpasar in charge of the Economic Affairs to register, he was told that the registration periode was over. This seemed starnge to him because there had not been any clear information about when registration had opened and before he knew it it was already closed. Head of Denpasar government agency who asked asked for anonymity, expressed a similar complaint explaining that he great hope of involving mentored partners in the four day event but many of the partners that intended to participate have not been given the facility to do so. “Hopefully next year, we will be given a few booths so those who have been mentored can set up stands at Denfest”, he said. Head of Economic Affairs for the Regional Secretariat of Denpasar, Made Saryawan, who is also on the committee for the Denfest confirmed that participants have yet to be determined and that they have only now strated assessing the 80 participants who have registered to set up food stands at the festival. All the Denfest participants have to go through a selection preocess, they are not appointed, he explained. To presum ethat the participants are always the same people is not right, it is difficult to say because it is based ont eh selection process, he said. Ho, ho, ho! SantaCon is coming to town
NEW YORK - From Boston to Austin and Chicago to Los Angeles, revelers across the United States will be donning red and white suits this weekend to mark the worldwide SantaCon holiday pub crawl. The annual, often inebriated gatherings of people dressed as Santa Claus as they go barhopping will be held in 380 cities in the United States and 51 countries, according to SantaCon.info. The website, which bills itself as the established authority on the
event, lists details of festivities around the globe, discounts on Santa Claus costumes and advice on how to avoid ticket scams for the events which are mostly free. But while the faux Santas are counting on a fun-filled day and evening, some bar owners and
local officials are bracing for the worst after previous events ended with complaints of drunken and disorderly behavior, public urination and arrests. Norman Siegel, the New York lawyer who represents SantaCon, acknowledged that in the past the festival in the city had been marred by drunken incidents but this year organizers are aiming for no, or very few arrests or summons. Taxing questions spoil Ballon d’Or win for Ronaldo
MADRID - Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo feels unable to celebrate his fourth Ballon d’Or award as much as his previous triumphs due to recent allegations of tax evasion. The European Investigative Collaborations (EIC) media consortium reported in early December that Ronaldo, and several other clients of soccer agency Gestifute, had used tax havens to handle tens of millions of euros in earnings.
Gestifute denied the accusations last week. Ronaldo, who led Portugal to the Euro 2016 title in July after helping Real Madrid clinch the Champions League, expressed his disappointment at the timing of the charges against him. “Of course it (allegations) has spoiled it a little bit. I would be lying if I said it hadn’t. I’m not a hypocrite,” he told soccer magazine France Football. “I wasn’t pleased. The whole process in itself is hard and not only for me, but also for the people alongside me: my family, my son, all those who work with me. “All that irritates me because I try to do things correctly, be transparent.” In their denial, Gestifute stated that Ronaldo, who moved to Real Madrid from Manchester United in 2009, is compliant with his tax obligations in Spain. The 31-year-old Ronaldo, who beat Barcelona forward Lionel Messi and Atletico Madrid striker Antoine Griezmann to world football’s top individual prize for 2016 at a glitzy ceremony on Monday, insists he has nothing to hide. “You just have to type ‘Cristiano Ronaldo’ on the Internet and you know everything about me,” the Portugal captain said. “I don’t have any reason to lie. “What came out troubles me. Because it’s not true. The lie is troubling. I have done things correctly. “There are a lot of innocent people in prison. And I feel a little bit like that. You know you have done nothing wrong, and they say you have done something reprehensible. No one likes that. “But the truth always comes out. Sooner or later.” Ronaldo, who previously won the Ballon d’Or in 2008, 2013 and 2014, is currently with Real Madrid in Japan preparing for Thursday’s Club World Cup semi-final against Mexican side Club America.
