LOS ANGELES - Actor Shia LaBeouf apologized on Wednesday for his expletive-filled rants hurled at the officers who arrested him in Georgia last week on charges of disorderly conduct and public intoxication, and said he was seeking help for addiction.

The “Transformers” actor said he was “deeply ashamed of my behavior” and “my actions warrant a very sincere apology to the arresting officers, and I am grateful for their restraint,” in a statement posted on his Twitter page.

LaBeouf, 31, was arrested in the lobby of his Savannah hotel in the early hours of Saturday, booked into jail and released a few hours later, police said.

Iriawan said the drug is expected to be distributed to the Jakarta area and surrounding areas, because the disclosure of the case is an expansion of the disclosure of drug cases in Jakarta.

Tailing behind China is Thailand, which recorded 2 tons of seized methamphetamine in 2008 but more than 10 tons in 2012. Indonesia comes in third place with more than 2.1 tons, triple the 700 kg seized in 2008. Myanmar has also recorded a jump in methamphetamine seizures from 100 kg to 2 tons.

500 baleganjur artists to perform in Bulfest 2017 arena

SINGARAJA - The art performances through the Buleleng Festival (Bulfest) this year will be organized again by local government. This Bulfest of the fifth year will take place on August 2 to 6, 2017. The committee agreed to feature the theme ‘The Power of Buleleng.’ Bulfest celebration will feature mass art parades every year.

As scheduled, mass baleganjur gamelan orchestra will open the Bulfest this time. Unmitigatedly, the baleganjur parade will involve about 500 artists and dancers from dozens of dance studios in Buleleng. This mass baleganjur will parade along the Jalan Ngurah Rai, under the main stage of Bulfest. Besides, the ngoncang (pounding pestle in mortar) tradition will also be displayed on the upcoming Bulfest. This tradition is chosen because some villages in Buleleng still consider it as a cultural heritage of agrarian area. They believe that ngoncang has the efficacy to reject catastrophe so that it is featured in a series of Hindu rituals.

In addition to these two arts, Ramayana fragmentary show will also jazz up the Bulfest, presented by Listibiya Buleleng. In the meantime, to entertain the young people of Buleleng, the committee will feature top national bands such as Kotak and Endank Soekamti.

Kotak is scheduled to perform on the main stage of Bulfest on August 5, while Endank Soekamti follows on the following day (Aug. 6). Some local bands of Bali are also enlivened the festival like Lolot, Nanoe Biroe and Bintang. A dance studio from Jakarta, namely Daya Presta is going to enliven the art schedules in the Sasana Budaya of Singaraja.

Art Division Head at the Buleleng Culture Agency, Wayan Sujana, said on Wednesday (Jul. 12) that some schedules have been confirmed, but there are unconfirmed schedules of staging by some dance studios related to time, venue and material of performance.

DENPASAR - In order to commemorate International Day against Drug (HANI) 2017, the Eradication Division at the national narcotic agency (BNNP) Bali raided several nightspots on Tuesday (Jul. 11). From the raid in the New Star, Executive Club and Royal Palace in Denpasar, the officers could ensnare 10 drug users and an ecstasy dealer with the initials IWA, 24.

Head of the BNNP Bali, Putu Gede Suastawa, accompanied by Eradication Division Head, Ketut Artha, said on Wednesday (Jul. 13) that this effort will continue

to be done because the circulation of narcotics disregards time and place. According to him, no single nightspot escaped from the raid. “As we have said before, the raid will continue to be done but the time and place continue to change,” he said.

New York menswear event showcases rising designers

NEW YORK - A four-day parade of men’s fashion has kicked off in New York, showcasing the 2018 Spring/Summer collections of rising designers, several making their debuts on this closely watched global stage.

That internationalism was felt this year through the fashion collections displayed.

Nigerian-born designer Taofeek Abijako dressed male models in boxy fits and bright colors, saying he drew on the colonial history of his country for inspiration.

“I took inspiration from African contemporary photographers like Malick Sidibé, Seydou Keita ... and how they reacted to Western influence,” he said.

Although just in its fifth year, New York Fashion Week: Men’s is fast becoming an important stop on the fashion circuit.

“I love that New York Fashion Week: Men’s is really gaining momentum,” said American designer David Hart, who showcased light summerwear that invoked a feel of Cuba, which has recently restored ties with the United States and seen a rise in tourism.

“I feel like there is a new energy, and big excitement, and it really is a platform for the menswear designers here in New York City,” he said.

The event mostly dropped the traditional catwalk associated with

large fashion shows and designers instead had models stand in large spaces to showcase the clothes.

Later in the week, the show will feature collection debuts by Raf Simons and Boss, while Robert Geller launches a contemporary line called “Gustav von Aschenbach” and Barbara Sanchez-Kane of Sanchez-Kane shows for the first time in New York.

Low reading interests, library visits on the rise

MANGUPURA — The number of library visits in Badung district increased from month to month. Data of the Badung Regional Library Office recorded that during the period of January through June the number of visit tends to increase, where in January the visit reached 835 people and in June reached 1,245 people.

Chief of the Badung Archives and Library Office, Ni Wayan Kristiani, said the high number of library visits is not directly proportional to public interest. “Reading interest of the community and school students today is very low.

Certainly it is influenced by the very rapid technological progress, causing the literacy to move to social media,” said Wayan Kristiani, on Tuesday (Jul. 11).

Therefore, Wayan Kristiani appealed to the community, especially school students, to utilize local library maximally. The library provides many books that certainly can enrich the insight of every individual wishing to read.

“From January, the visit tends to increase. In addition to general public, school students such as elementary, junior and high school

to college students often visit the library,” she said.

According to her, the number of visit tends to increase from January to June where in January the visit amounted to 835 people, February (883), then increased in March (1,117) and April (1,132). “Then, it increased again in May to 1,577 people, and the decrease only happened in June to 1,245 people,” she explained.

She admitted that the building of Badung library tends to be formal, so the interest of people to come to read books slightly reduced. Actually, there is a lot of literacy that can be used. “We plan to change the concept of the building considering that reading activity is a matter of recreation, so that someone reading becomes relaxed,” she added.

In order to increase the interest

in reading, her office will change some rooms with appropriate concepts so that can give comfortable atmosphere. For example, in the child’s reading room, it will apply a kindergarten concept that specifically intended for children. Thus, the children coming into the room will become interested.

“If the room alone is interesting, practically children and society will be interested to read,” she hoped.

She described that the Badung library has owned two mobile library vehicles and a diorama room with a capacity of 44 seats for screening of historical film scheduled for elementary school students

on Tuesday and Thursday. Then, general public is directed beyond these days, but in accordance with the agreement begun with a letter of request from the community.

“Currently, there are only two mobile library vehicles so that it is not adequate to reach all the schools in Badung,” she concluded. (kmb27)

The non-replaced ETT pipe that becomes a nest of germs will become the source of the spread of germs from patient. In the throat and nose there are normal germs. When patient suffers severe disease, the germs become over growth. “The germs will come into the ETT tube and enter the airway,” she explained. In smaller toddler, it often causes vomiting because the germs from the stomach enter the ETT pipe.

Top U.S. diplomat ends talks in Gulf; no sign Qatar crisis resolved

JEDDAH - U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson ended talks with ministers from Saudi Arabia and three Arab allies on Wednesday over how to end a month-long rift with Qatar, but there was no immediate word of any breakthrough.

Tillerson returned to Kuwait, the mediator between the feuding Gulf countries, without making any statement on his talks in the Saudi Red Sea city of Jeddah. He had signed a U.S.-Qatari accord on terrorism financing on Wednesday, but Qatar’s opponents said it fell short of allaying their concerns.

Any resolution of the impasse must address all the key issues for Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt, a senior UAE official said before the talks in Saudi Arabia.

The four countries imposed sanctions on Qatar on June 5, accusing it of financing extremist groups and allying with the Gulf Arab states’ arch-foe, Iran. Doha denies those accusations. The four states and Qatar are all U.S. allies.

Tillerson met the foreign ministers to try to end the worst dispute in decades among the U.S.-allied Gulf Arab states. He also met separately with Saudi King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to discuss cooperation

in combating terrorism and its financing.

“We’re happy to see this continuous cooperation between us and (to) even strengthen it and increase it further without limits ...” Mohammed bin Salman said in welcoming Tillerson.

U.S. officials said Tillerson would travel to Qatar on Thursday to brief the emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, on his talks in Jeddah, State Department spokesman R.C. Hammond said.

UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed al-Nahayan told reporters during a visit to Slovakia that Tillerson’s visit was unlikely to resolve the row.

“I think it will ease tensions, but it’s just postponing the problem, which will grow in the future.”

In a joint statement issued after Tillerson and his Qatari counterpart signed their counter-terrorism pact on Tuesday, the four states called the accord inadequate.

They also reinstated 13 wideranging demands they had earlier submitted to Qatar, the world’s big-

gest producer of liquefied natural gas, as a condition for removing sanctions.

The demands include curbing Qatar’s relations with Iran, closing the Doha-based Al Jazeera TV channel, shutting a Turkish military base in Qatar and handing over all designated “terrorists” on its territory.

Anwar Gargash, the UAE minister of state for foreign affairs, sent a formal complaint to the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights on Wednesday alleging that Al Jazeera supported terrorism, sectarianism and anti-Semitism.

Al Jazeera, which has denied allegations of stoking violence and says it practices free speech, did not immediately respond to a request for a comment.

SHENYANG - As the hospital treating Liu Xiaobao says his organs and breathing have begun to fail from cancer, few in China outside a small circle of dissidents know about the Nobel Peace Prize laureate and his lifetime pursuit of liberal democratic reform.

Even other patients at the First Hospital of China Medical University in the northeastern city of Shenyang, where Liu is being treated, seem not to know they are sharing the facilities with a world famous dissident.

When Reuters visited the floor where friends say Liu is being treated, visitors for other patients on the same ward seemed confused and asked why there were new procedures when security questioned them and checked their IDs. Nothing has appeared in Chinese-language official media since Liu was diagnosed with cancer in late May. Searches for “Liu Xiaobo” on Chinese social media show no results.

China’s foreign ministry answers questions from international media at its daily briefing with the standard line: China is a country ruled by law and the case is an internal affair; other countries should not meddle. Even that line is missing from the official transcripts of the briefings on the ministry’s website.

The Global Times, a nationalist tabloid published by the official paper of the ruling Communist Party, is the only publication that regularly writes articles about Liu, in English, and usually to rebuff international criticism.

The paper has cast Liu as an outsider marginalized from soci-

ety whose cause has failed inside China.

It was “overseas dissidents” who are the most active in “hyping the issue” and are trying to “boost their image by ‘deifying’ Liu,” the Global Times said in a Monday editorial. “Western mainstream society is much less enthusiastic than before in interfering with China’s sovereign affairs,” it said.

CHARTER 08 Liu was the co-author of a prodemocracy manifesto called Charter 08, which attracted more than 10,000 signatures online before the authorities deleted the document from internet pages and chatrooms.

He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2010, a year after he was sentenced to 11 years in prison for inciting subversion.

Charter ‘08, issued in 2008, reflected an apparent shift in China at the time towards becoming more open to liberal ideals, said Beijing-based historian and political commentator Zhang Lifan. That changed when Xi Jinping came to power in 2013.

“Since (Liu) was sentenced, peaceful transformation as a route for change has essentially been blocked off by the party. Since the new administration came into office, the party is moving in the opposite direction,” he said.

Hu Jia, a well-known Beijingbased dissident and friend of Liu’s, says few people in China know anything about him or his work.

Malaysia shelves plan to buy new fighter jets - defence source

KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysia has put on hold a $2 billion plan to replace its aging fleet of combat aircraft, looking instead to upgrade its aerial surveillance capabilities to confront the growing threat of militancy inspired by the Islamic State group, a source with knowledge of the matter said. Southeast Asia’s third-largest economy has for several years been weighing the competing merits of France’s Rafale jet and the Eurofighter Typhoon, built

by Britain’s BAE Systems , as it looks to buy up to 18 jets to replace its Russian MiG-29 fighters - nearly half of which are grounded.

The Rafale fighter - built by Dassault Aviation SA - was until recently seen as the frontrunner, with the support of key officials in Malaysia’s defence ministry. But Malaysia has shelved those plans for now as it looks to boost aerial surveillance that will be critical in its fight against militancy, a defence ministry source told Reuters.

The decision comes as Islamist fighters continue to battle security forces in Marawi in the southern Philippines. Malaysia and Indonesia, which share the nearby island of Borneo, are working with the Philippines to conduct air and maritime patrols along their shared borders in the Sulu Sea. “With regards to Rafale, France is still pushing for it as evidenced during the recent air show in Paris,” said the source, on condition of anonymity as he was not authorised to

Malaysia’s decision to suspend its jet fighter acquisition programme will come as a blow to Dassault’s Rafale and the Eurofighter Typhoon, the two main competitors for the deal to replace the Royal Malaysian Air Force’s (RMAF) squadron of Russian MiG-29s.

Spokesmen for Dassault and Eurofighter, a consortium including Airbus BAE Systems and Leonardo of Italy, declined to comment.

BAE Systems did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Prime Minister Najib Razak said in March that the Rafale deal was discussed during then French President Francois Hollande’s visit to the Southeast Asian nation, but that Malaysia was “not ready yet to make a decision”.

Dassault was awarded a contract in September last year to deliver 36 Rafale jets to India, and hopes to make additional sales to New

Delhi. Dassault Chief Executive Eric Trappier said in May that the company was “notably in talks” with Malaysia and India to secure one new contract by 2018. BAE Systems, which leads the regional sales campaign for the Typhoon, is looking to kick off its entry into Southeast Asia with the sale of its multi-role combat aircraft to Malaysia.

Malaysia has four Beechcraft BT200T surveillance aircraft, but one of the planes crashed in December killing the pilot.

The defence ministry source said Kuala Lumpur was looking at acquiring four more surveillance planes that were larger and had a longer range than its existing assets, such as aircraft built by Lockheed Martin. “We’re looking at a commercial-based platform, which is more affordable, compared to a military specific platform,” the source said.(rtr)

Exclusive: Trump says he does not fault son for meeting Russian lawyer

WASHINGTON - U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday he did not fault his son Donald Trump Jr. for meeting with a Russian lawyer during the 2016 presidential election campaign and that he was unaware of the meeting until a few days ago.

Asked if he knew that his son was meeting with lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya in June last year, the president told Reuters in a White House interview: “No, that I didn’t know until a couple of days ago when I heard about this.”

Trump Jr. eagerly agreed to meet the woman he was told was a Russian government lawyer who might have damaging information about Democratic rival Hillary Clinton as part of Moscow’s official support for his father’s campaign, according to emails the son released on Tuesday.

Seated at his Oval Office desk, Trump said he did not fault his son for holding the meeting, writing it off as a decision made in the heat of an upstart, nontraditional campaign.

“I think many people would have held that meeting,” Trump said.

“It was a 20-minute meeting, I guess, from what I’m hearing,” Trump said. “Many people, and many political pros, said everybody would do that.”

The emails were the most concrete evidence that Trump campaign officials might have been willing to accept Russian help to win the Nov. 8 election, a subject that has cast a cloud over Trump’s presidency

and prompted investigations by the U.S. Justice Department and Congress.

Donald Trump Jr., in an interview with Fox News on Tuesday, said: “In retrospect, I probably would have done things a little differently.”

Trust Putin?

In the White House interview, the president said he directly asked Russian President Vladimir Putin if he was involved in what U.S. intelligence says was Russian meddling in the presidential campaign and that Putin had insisted he was not.

Trump said he spent the first 20 or 25 minutes of his more than two-hour meeting with Putin last Friday in Germany on the election meddling subject.

“I said, ‘Did you do it?’ And he said, ‘No, I did not.

BRASILIA - Former Brazilian leader Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, a top contender to win next year’s presidential election, was convicted on corruption charges on Wednesday and sentenced to nearly 10 years in prison.

The ruling marked a stunning fall for Lula, one of the country’s most popular politicians, and a serious blow to his chances of a political comeback. The former union leader, who won global praise for policies to reduce stinging inequality in Brazil, faces four more corruption trials and will remain free on appeal.

The verdict represented the highest-profile conviction yet in a sweeping corruption investigation that for over three years has rattled Brazil, revealing a sprawling system of graft at top levels of business and government.

Judge Sergio Moro found Lula, 71, guilty of accepting 3.7 million reais ($1.2 million) worth of bribes from engineering firm OAS SA, the amount of money prosecutors said the company spent refurbishing a beach apartment for Lula in return for his help winning contracts with state oil company Petroleo Brasileiro.

Federal prosecutors have accused Lula, Brazil’s first working-class president from 2003 to 2011, of masterminding a long-running corruption scheme that was uncovered in a probe into kickbacks around Petrobras.

Lula’s legal team said in an emailed statement that he was innocent and they would appeal.

“For over three years, Lula has been subject to a politically motivated investigation,” they wrote. “No credible evidence of guilt has been produced, and overwhelming proof of his innocence blatantly ignored.”

Lula’s lawyer Cristiano Martins has repeatedly accused judge Moro of being biased against his client, which Moro strongly denies.

Moro wrote in his ruling that he “took no personal satisfaction in this conviction, quite to the contrary.”

“It’s lamentable that a president of the republic is criminally convicted,” Moro said. “No matter how important you are, no one is above the law.”

As Indonesia cuts forests, fake nature thrives

JAKARTA — Indonesia’s capital is lush with fake greenery even as the country is cutting down its precious tropical forests at a record rate. Jakarta’s gleaming air-conditioned malls have a particular fondness for lifeless extravaganzas of plastic ferns or autumnal trees that don’t drop any leaves. Construction sites are wrapped in screens printed with giant leaves glistening with dew drops or the picturesque deciduous forests found in temperate climates. A new terminal at the international airport has a mini-jungle within its cavernous air-conditioned interior. Despite the odd inclusion of fake grass it has the slight saving grace that the potted greenery is real.

It’s not that Jakarta lacks real trees.

The presidential palace has well-

manicured surrounds of park, verges and trees. But elsewhere, against the

backdrop of unrelenting traffic and brutalist concrete, the greens often seem weirdly out of place, like an introduced alien species.

“Shuttling between air-conditioned high rises decorated with a simulacrum of nature, it’s easy to ignore the impact on climate and communities of relentless forest destruction taking place far away,” said Greenpeace Indonesia campaigner Yuyun Indradi.

Indonesia’s most densely populated island, Java, is nearly completed denuded of its original virgin forest and Sumatra is nearly as bare.

Palm oil and pulp wood plantation companies are now making inroads into the great forests of Borneo and Papua. The draining of tropical wetlands for industrial plantations has also come at a significant human cost. Record dry season fires in Sumatra and Borneo in 2015 hastened 100,000 deaths in the region from air pollution, according to a Harvard and Columbia study, and by World Bank estimates cost Indonesia’s economy $16 billion.

“Perhaps when our children grow up, fake trees may help them reflect on how badly we need to protect that which is authentic and can’t simply be purchased in a mall,” said Indradi. “Or

will they decide that the more comfortable, accessible and colorful fake version will do them just as well?”

The fake nature is of a piece with our world today. We live in an age when it’s sometimes increasingly difficult to discern the fake and the real.

Artificial flavorings. Perfectly photoshopped selfies to eliminate blemishes and extra weight. Sophisticated simulations of famous buildings in cities across the world — like the skyscrapers of New York dotting the casinos of Las Vegas.

In Japan, there’s an entire street that sells plastic food meticulously

designed to make potential restaurant-goers’ mouths water. In some well-to-do gated communities in the United States, gardens are full of fake flowers carefully drizzled with transparent glue so that they look as if they’ve been freshly rained upon.

And then there’s fake news, of course — the latest expression of something synthetic that has people talking and arguing over its very definition. It makes sense, though, that fake nature would assert itself, just as real nature does, in the in-between spaces of Jakarta. Human beings are inclined to simulate what they can’t have. (ap)

Ministers must be ready for reshuffle: presidential staff

JAKARTA - Chief Presidential Staff Teten Masduki said that all ministers and other state officials must be prepared to be reshuffled or replaced anytime. “All ministers must be ready (to be reshuffled) anytime,” Masduki stated, after attending a coordination meeting on malnutrition here, on Wednesday.

Masduki made the remark in response to the rumors in the media on the fourth cabinet reshuffle in the current administration of President Joko Widodo (Jokowi). “I have no idea about it, and so far, no discussion has been made concerning the reshuffle rumors.

The matter is the presidents right,” he noted.

Besides stressing that all ministers must always be ready for any reshuffle, Masduki also explained about the focus of accelerating development based on the directives of Jokowi, which covered improvement of the governments performance and of economic growth

and stability amid global downturns.

“I do not know when the reshuffle will be carried out, but what I know is that the president continues to push his ministers to perform better. Regarding performance, it is very dynamical because people have high expectation. Moreover, Indonesia has many problems. When one problem is handled here, another one emerges there,” the chief presidential staff stated.

Therefore, Masduki revealed that the reshuffle rumors did not disturb the performance of the government. Regardless of thinking when the reshuffle will be carried out, the cabinet ministers must choose to focus on carrying out their respective tasks to develop the nations prosperity.

“No, the ministers do not think about it (reshuffle),” he noted. Vice President Jusuf Kalla has also been asked to provide a confirmation regarding the fourth reshuffle issue, but he refused to comment. (ant)

McGregor, Mayweather continue war of words in Toronto

TORONTO - Undefeated boxer Floyd Mayweather is the heavy favourite to win his bout against mixed marital arts champion Conor McGregor but the Irishman again won the war of words at their media conference in Toronto on Wednesday.

Tides and currents are not dangerous here but you’ll encounter stronger currents if you swim out between the two small islands, making it a great surfing spot. There is also Mengiat Beach, to the south from the public beach, separated by the Grand Hyatt Bali. The resort’s beach area and facilities are not open to the public, but you are still allowed to walk there and will get to Mengiat in less than 10 minutes. Mengiat is more of the high-class tourists’ choice; it’s much quieter and cleaner than the public beach.

The turquoise-blue water is not really for surfing and there are a couple of small eateries serving international food here and beach loungers’ rental. It is accessible from the road next to the Inna Putri Bali Hotel, near the gate from Jalan Pantai Mengiat. Lifeguards stand by on both beaches. (IBP/net)

A day after McGregor mercilessly mocked the American in Los Angeles to launch a four-day international promotional tour for their Aug. 26 fight, the flamboyant 28-year-old again went on the offensive, ridiculing Mayweather’s attire and landing a low blow with a comment about his rumoured reading difficulties.

“How do I look?” McGregor asked the crowd, before taking a swipe at Mayweather’s bag. “He’s 40!

With defending champion Andy Murray losing earlier on Centre Court to Sam Querrey and Novak Djokovic retiring with an injury against Tomas Berdych, Federer is now overwhelming favourite to become the first man to win the title eight times.

“I can’t believe it’s 100 matches, it’s a lot but I’m very happy my body has kept me going all these years,” said Federer who will face Berdych in Friday’s semi-finals.

“You have to make sure you average is as high as possible every day and I think I’m doing a great job this week.”

Raonic might have had the 140 mph serve in his locker, but Federer owns a magic wand that he used to make the world’s sixth best player look like a lumbering also-ran.

It was hard not feel sorry for Raonic at times.

Usually when a player is taking the kind of beating Federer was handing out on a sunlit Centre

Court, the crowd throw their weight behind the underdog.

That rule does not apply when it is Federer, king of Wimbledon, inflicting the punishment in the silky manner only the 18-times grand slam champion is capable of.

When, to his immense credit, Raonic finally began to threaten in the third set, going 3-0 up in the tiebreak, it was Federer they were cheering for.

When he responded with two majestic forehands, one apparently defying physics as it curled around the net post, they were in raptures in the stands and former great Rod Laver smiled in admiration from the Royal Box. “I was sort of moving on, let’s see if he can do it again. He kept doing it,” Raonic told reporters.

“He kept a very high gear the whole entire time without giving many real glimpses.

“I think that was the most defeating thing.”

There was a slightly subdued atmosphere on Centre Court after home favourite Murray had

hobbled to defeat against Querrey.

But once the old place filled up and Federer hit his stride the British player’s defeat was forgotten.

Federer struck two rasping backhand winners in the fifth game and raced across the turf to punish Raonic for failing to put away a volley, pummelling a forehand straight through the ducking Canadian to seize a decisive break.

Raonic’s belief ebbed away at the start of the second set when a careless forehand gifted Federer another break and the third seed went for the jugular, grabbing another break of serve as he sauntered into a two-set lead.

Federer was made to sweat a little in the third set, saving four break points at 3-4 as Raonic finally began to hit his groundstrokes with menace.

When Raonic opened up an early lead in the tiebreak it looked as though Federer might drop his first set of the tournament, but he responded in style to win seven of the next eight points and earn himself a standing ovation. (rtr)

Everton forward Yannick Bolasie is eager to learn from the Premier League club’s new “world class” signing Wayne Rooney and is relishing the extra competition in the side after the club’s recent transfer spree, the 28-year-old has said.

Former England captain Rooney, who is the record scorer for the national team, returned to Everton after 13 years with Manchester United and was manager Ronald Koeman’s sixth signing in the current transfer window.

Winger Bolasie played just 15 matches for Everton last season after sustaining a knee injury in December and will miss the start of the next campaign but is keen to return to action and learn from

the experienced England forward.

“There are some top quality players that have come in, especially Rooney, who is world class.

He will bring a leader’s mentality and it will be good to learn off him,” Democratic Republic of Congo international Bolasie said.

“The signings we have made have definitely made the team stronger. The competition for places is going to be strong, but that is what I live for and I am looking forward to fighting for my place. It will bring another level to my game.”

Federer was made to sweat a little in the third set, saving four break points at 3-4 as Raonic finally began to hit his groundstrokes with menace.

Exclusive: Trump says he does not fault son for meeting Russian lawyer

WASHINGTON - U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday he did not fault his son Donald Trump Jr. for meeting with a Russian lawyer during the 2016 presidential election campaign and that he was unaware of the meeting until a few days ago.

Asked if he knew that his son was meeting with lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya in June last year, the president told Reuters in a White House interview: “No, that I didn’t know until a couple of days ago when I heard about this.”

Trump Jr. eagerly agreed to meet the woman he was told was a Russian government lawyer who might have damaging information about Democratic rival Hillary Clinton as part of Moscow’s official support for his father’s campaign, according to emails the son released on Tuesday.

Seated at his Oval Office desk, Trump said he did not fault his son for holding the meeting, writing it off as a decision made in the heat of an upstart, nontraditional campaign.

“I think many people would have held that meeting,” Trump said.

“It was a 20-minute meeting, I guess, from what I’m hearing,” Trump said. “Many people, and many political pros, said everybody would do that.”

BRASILIA - Former Brazilian leader Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, a top contender to win next year’s presidential election, was convicted on corruption charges on Wednesday and sentenced to nearly 10 years in prison.

The ruling marked a stunning fall for Lula, one of the country’s most popular politicians, and a serious blow to his chances of a political comeback. The former union leader, who won global praise for policies to reduce stinging inequality in Brazil, faces four more corruption trials and will remain free on appeal.

The verdict represented the highest-profile conviction yet in a sweeping corruption investigation that for over three years has rattled Brazil, revealing a sprawling system of graft at top levels of business and government.

Judge Sergio Moro found Lula, 71, guilty of accepting 3.7 million reais ($1.2 million) worth of bribes from engineering firm OAS SA, the amount of money prosecutors said the company spent refurbishing a beach apartment for Lula in return for his help winning contracts with state oil company Petroleo Brasileiro.

Federal prosecutors have accused Lula, Brazil’s first working-class president from 2003 to 2011, of masterminding a long-running corruption scheme that was uncovered in a probe into kickbacks around Petrobras.

Lula’s legal team said in an emailed statement that he was innocent and they would appeal.

“For over three years, Lula has been subject to a politically motivated investigation,” they wrote. “No credible evidence of guilt has been produced, and overwhelming proof of his innocence blatantly ignored.”

Lula’s lawyer Cristiano Martins has repeatedly accused judge Moro of being biased against his client, which Moro strongly denies.

Moro wrote in his ruling that he “took no personal satisfaction in this conviction, quite to the contrary.”

“It’s lamentable that a president of the republic is criminally convicted,” Moro said. “No matter how important you are, no one is above the law.”

JAKARTA — Indonesia’s capital is lush with fake greenery even as the country is cutting down its precious tropical forests at a record rate. Jakarta’s gleaming air-conditioned malls have a particular fondness for lifeless extravaganzas of plastic ferns or autumnal trees that don’t drop any leaves. Construction sites are wrapped in screens printed with giant leaves glistening with dew drops or the picturesque deciduous forests found in temperate climates. A new terminal at the international airport has a mini-jungle within its cavernous air-conditioned interior. Despite the odd inclusion of fake grass it has the slight saving grace that the potted greenery is real.

It’s not that Jakarta lacks real trees.

The presidential palace has well-

manicured surrounds of park, verges and trees. But elsewhere, against the

backdrop of unrelenting traffic and brutalist concrete, the greens often seem weirdly out of place, like an introduced alien species.

“Shuttling between air-conditioned high rises decorated with a simulacrum of nature, it’s easy to ignore the impact on climate and communities of relentless forest destruction taking place far away,” said Greenpeace Indonesia campaigner Yuyun Indradi.

Indonesia’s most densely populated island, Java, is nearly completed denuded of its original virgin forest and Sumatra is nearly as bare.

“Perhaps when our children grow up, fake trees may help them reflect on how badly we need to protect that which is authentic and can’t simply be purchased in a mall,” said Indradi. “Or

will they decide that the more comfortable, accessible and colorful fake version will do them just as well?”

The fake nature is of a piece with our world today. We live in an age when it’s sometimes increasingly difficult to discern the fake and the real.

Artificial flavorings. Perfectly photoshopped selfies to eliminate blemishes and extra weight. Sophisticated simulations of famous buildings in cities across the world — like the skyscrapers of New York dotting the casinos of Las Vegas.

In Japan, there’s an entire street that sells plastic food meticulously

designed to make potential restaurant-goers’ mouths water. In some well-to-do gated communities in the United States, gardens are full of fake flowers carefully drizzled with transparent glue so that they look as if they’ve been freshly rained upon.

And then there’s fake news, of course — the latest expression of something synthetic that has people talking and arguing over its very definition. It makes sense, though, that fake nature would assert itself, just as real nature does, in the in-between spaces of Jakarta. Human beings are inclined to simulate what they can’t have. (ap)

Ministers must be ready for reshuffle: presidential staff

Malaysia shelves plan to buy new fighter jets - defence source

KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysia has put on hold a $2 billion plan to replace its aging fleet of combat aircraft, looking instead to upgrade its aerial surveillance capabilities to confront the growing threat of militancy inspired by the Islamic State group, a source with knowledge of the matter said. Southeast Asia’s third-largest economy has for several years been weighing the competing merits of France’s Rafale jet and the Eurofighter Typhoon, built

by Britain’s BAE Systems , as it looks to buy up to 18 jets to replace its Russian MiG-29 fighters - nearly half of which are grounded.

The Rafale fighter - built by Dassault Aviation SA - was until recently seen as the frontrunner, with the support of key officials in Malaysia’s defence ministry. But Malaysia has shelved those plans for now as it looks to boost aerial surveillance that will be critical in its fight against militancy, a defence ministry source told Reuters.

The decision comes as Islamist fighters continue to battle security forces in Marawi in the southern Philippines. Prime Minister Najib Razak said in March that the Rafale deal was discussed during then French President Francois Hollande’s visit to the Southeast Asian nation, but that Malaysia was “not ready yet to make a decision”.

Dassault was awarded a contract in September last year to deliver 36 Rafale jets to India, and hopes to make additional sales to New

Delhi. Dassault Chief Executive Eric Trappier said in May that the company was “notably in talks” with Malaysia and India to secure one new contract by 2018. BAE Systems, which leads the regional sales campaign for the Typhoon, is looking to kick off its entry into Southeast Asia with the sale of its multi-role combat aircraft to Malaysia.

Malaysia has four Beechcraft BT200T surveillance aircraft, but one of the planes crashed in December killing the pilot.

JEDDAH - U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson ended talks with ministers from Saudi Arabia and three Arab allies on Wednesday over how to end a month-long rift with Qatar, but there was no immediate word of any breakthrough.

Tillerson returned to Kuwait, the mediator between the feuding Gulf countries, without making any statement on his talks in the Saudi Red Sea city of Jeddah. He had signed a U.S.-Qatari accord on terrorism financing on Wednesday, but Qatar’s opponents said it fell short of allaying their concerns.

Any resolution of the impasse must address all the key issues for Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt, a senior UAE official said before the talks in Saudi Arabia.

The four countries imposed sanctions on Qatar on June 5, accusing it of financing extremist groups and allying with the Gulf Arab states’ arch-foe, Iran. Doha denies those accusations. The four states and Qatar are all U.S. allies.

Tillerson met the foreign ministers to try to end the worst dispute in decades among the U.S.-allied Gulf Arab states. He also met separately with Saudi King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to discuss cooperation

in combating terrorism and its financing.

“We’re happy to see this continuous cooperation between us and (to) even strengthen it and increase it further without limits ...” Mohammed bin Salman said in welcoming Tillerson.

U.S. officials said Tillerson would travel to Qatar on Thursday to brief the emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, on his talks in Jeddah, State Department spokesman R.C. Hammond said.

UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed al-Nahayan told reporters during a visit to Slovakia that Tillerson’s visit was unlikely to resolve the row.

“I think it will ease tensions, but it’s just postponing the problem, which will grow in the future.”

In a joint statement issued after Tillerson and his Qatari counterpart signed their counter-terrorism pact on Tuesday, the four states called the accord inadequate.

They also reinstated 13 wideranging demands they had earlier submitted to Qatar, the world’s big-

gest producer of liquefied natural gas, as a condition for removing sanctions.

The demands include curbing Qatar’s relations with Iran, closing the Doha-based Al Jazeera TV channel, shutting a Turkish military base in Qatar and handing over all designated “terrorists” on its territory.

Anwar Gargash, the UAE minister of state for foreign affairs, sent a formal complaint to the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights on Wednesday alleging that Al Jazeera supported terrorism, sectarianism and anti-Semitism.

Al Jazeera, which has denied allegations of stoking violence and says it practices free speech, did not immediately respond to a request for a comment.

SHENYANG - As the hospital treating Liu Xiaobao says his organs and breathing have begun to fail from cancer, few in China outside a small circle of dissidents know about the Nobel Peace Prize laureate and his lifetime pursuit of liberal democratic reform.

Even other patients at the First Hospital of China Medical University in the northeastern city of Shenyang, where Liu is being treated, seem not to know they are sharing the facilities with a world famous dissident.

When Reuters visited the floor where friends say Liu is being treated, visitors for other patients on the same ward seemed confused and asked why there were new procedures when security questioned them and checked their IDs. Nothing has appeared in Chinese-language official media since Liu was diagnosed with cancer in late May. Searches for “Liu Xiaobo” on Chinese social media show no results.

China’s foreign ministry answers questions from international media at its daily briefing with the standard line: China is a country ruled by law and the case is an internal affair; other countries should not meddle. Even that line is missing from the official transcripts of the briefings on the ministry’s website.

The Global Times, a nationalist tabloid published by the official paper of the ruling Communist Party, is the only publication that regularly writes articles about Liu, in English, and usually to rebuff international criticism.

The paper has cast Liu as an outsider marginalized from soci-

ety whose cause has failed inside China.

It was “overseas dissidents” who are the most active in “hyping the issue” and are trying to “boost their image by ‘deifying’ Liu,” the Global Times said in a Monday editorial. “Western mainstream society is much less enthusiastic than before in interfering with China’s sovereign affairs,” it said.

CHARTER 08 Liu was the co-author of a prodemocracy manifesto called Charter 08, which attracted more than 10,000 signatures online before the authorities deleted the document from internet pages and chatrooms.

He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2010, a year after he was sentenced to 11 years in prison for inciting subversion.

Charter ‘08, issued in 2008, reflected an apparent shift in China at the time towards becoming more open to liberal ideals, said Beijing-based historian and political commentator Zhang Lifan. That changed when Xi Jinping came to power in 2013.

“Since (Liu) was sentenced, peaceful transformation as a route for change has essentially been blocked off by the party. Since the new administration came into office, the party is moving in the opposite direction,” he said.

Hu Jia, a well-known Beijingbased dissident and friend of Liu’s, says few people in China know anything about him or his work.

“The reality is that if you are on the streets of Beijing and you stop a hundred people, to have one know who Liu Xiaobo is would be a great result,” he said. (rtr)

New York menswear event showcases rising designers

NEW YORK - A four-day parade of men’s fashion has kicked off in New York, showcasing the 2018 Spring/Summer collections of rising designers, several making their debuts on this closely watched global stage.

That internationalism was felt this year through the fashion collections displayed.

Nigerian-born designer Taofeek Abijako dressed male models in boxy fits and bright colors, saying he drew on the colonial history of his country for inspiration.

“I took inspiration from African contemporary photographers like Malick Sidibé, Seydou Keita ... and how they reacted to Western influence,” he said.

Although just in its fifth year, New York Fashion Week: Men’s is fast becoming an important stop on the fashion circuit.

“I love that New York Fashion Week: Men’s is really gaining momentum,” said American designer David Hart, who showcased light summerwear that invoked a feel of Cuba, which has recently restored ties with the United States and seen a rise in tourism.

“I feel like there is a new energy, and big excitement, and it really is a platform for the menswear designers here in New York City,” he said.

The event mostly dropped the traditional catwalk associated with

large fashion shows and designers instead had models stand in large spaces to showcase the clothes.

Later in the week, the show will feature collection debuts by Raf Simons and Boss, while Robert Geller launches a contemporary line called “Gustav von Aschenbach” and Barbara Sanchez-Kane of Sanchez-Kane shows for the first time in New York.

Low reading interests, library visits on the rise

MANGUPURA — The number of library visits in Badung district increased from month to month. Data of the Badung Regional Library Office recorded that during the period of January through June the number of visit tends to increase, where in January the visit reached 835 people and in June reached 1,245 people.

Chief of the Badung Archives and Library Office, Ni Wayan Kristiani, said the high number of library visits is not directly proportional to public interest. “Reading interest of the community and school students today is very low.

Certainly it is influenced by the very rapid technological progress, causing the literacy to move to social media,” said Wayan Kristiani, on Tuesday (Jul. 11).

Therefore, Wayan Kristiani appealed to the community, especially school students, to utilize local library maximally. The library provides many books that certainly can enrich the insight of every individual wishing to read.

“From January, the visit tends to increase. In addition to general public, school students such as elementary, junior and high school

to college students often visit the library,” she said.

According to her, the number of visit tends to increase from January to June where in January the visit amounted to 835 people, February (883), then increased in March (1,117) and April (1,132). “Then, it increased again in May to 1,577 people, and the decrease only happened in June to 1,245 people,” she explained.

She admitted that the building of Badung library tends to be formal, so the interest of people to come to read books slightly reduced. Actually, there is a lot of literacy that can be used. “We plan to change the concept of the building considering that reading activity is a matter of recreation, so that someone reading becomes relaxed,” she added.

In order to increase the interest

in reading, her office will change some rooms with appropriate concepts so that can give comfortable atmosphere. For example, in the child’s reading room, it will apply a kindergarten concept that specifically intended for children. Thus, the children coming into the room will become interested.

“If the room alone is interesting, practically children and society will be interested to read,” she hoped.

She described that the Badung library has owned two mobile library vehicles and a diorama room with a capacity of 44 seats for screening of historical film scheduled for elementary school students

on Tuesday and Thursday. Then, general public is directed beyond these days, but in accordance with the agreement begun with a letter of request from the community.

500 baleganjur artists to perform in Bulfest 2017 arena

SINGARAJA - The art performances through the Buleleng Festival (Bulfest) this year will be organized again by local government. This Bulfest of the fifth year will take place on August 2 to 6, 2017. The committee agreed to feature the theme ‘The Power of Buleleng.’ Bulfest celebration will feature mass art parades every year.

As scheduled, mass baleganjur gamelan orchestra will open the Bulfest this time. Unmitigatedly, the baleganjur parade will involve about 500 artists and dancers from dozens of dance studios in Buleleng. This mass baleganjur will parade along the Jalan Ngurah Rai, under the main stage of Bulfest. Besides, the ngoncang (pounding pestle in mortar) tradition will also be displayed on the upcoming Bulfest. This tradition is chosen because some villages in Buleleng still consider it as a cultural heritage of agrarian area. They believe that ngoncang has the efficacy to reject catastrophe so that it is featured in a series of Hindu rituals.

In addition to these two arts, Ramayana fragmentary show will also jazz up the Bulfest, presented by Listibiya Buleleng. In the meantime, to entertain the young people of Buleleng, the committee will feature top national bands such as Kotak and Endank Soekamti.

Kotak is scheduled to perform on the main stage of Bulfest on August 5, while Endank Soekamti follows on the following day (Aug. 6). Some local bands of Bali are also enlivened the festival like Lolot, Nanoe Biroe and Bintang. A dance studio from Jakarta, namely Daya Presta is going to enliven the art schedules in the Sasana Budaya of Singaraja.

DENPASAR - In order to commemorate International Day against Drug (HANI) 2017, the Eradication Division at the national narcotic agency (BNNP) Bali raided several nightspots on Tuesday (Jul. 11). From the raid in the New Star, Executive Club and Royal Palace in Denpasar, the officers could ensnare 10 drug users and an ecstasy dealer with the initials IWA, 24.

Iriawan said the drug is expected to be distributed to the Jakarta area and surrounding areas, because the disclosure of the case is an expansion of the disclosure of drug cases in Jakarta.

nearly half of Asia’??s total seizure.

Tailing behind China is Thailand, which recorded 2 tons of seized methamphetamine in 2008 but more than 10 tons in 2012. Indonesia comes in third place with more than 2.1 tons, triple the 700 kg seized in 2008. Myanmar has also recorded a jump in methamphetamine seizures from 100 kg to 2 tons.
