LOS ANGELES - Disney’s “Ralph Breaks the Internet” has topped the North American box office for the third week in a row, taking in an estimated $16.3 million over the weekend, industry tracker Exhibitor Relations said Monday.

The animated film, a sequel to 2012’s “Wreck It Ralph,” has sold $141 million in domestic tickets since it opened and has helped Disney make box office history again this year with more than $7 billion in global box office earnings for 2018.

Coming in second over the weekend was “The Grinch,” which sold $15 million in tickets. Benedict Cumberbatch voices the grouchy Seuss-inspired title character in that film.

In third spot was MGM’s boxing drama “Creed II,” at $10 million. This latest in the long-running “Rocky” series stars Michael B. Jordan as Adonis Creed as he -- coached by the aging Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) -- takes on the son of the boxer who killed his father.

Fourth place went to “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” from Warner Bros., with a take of $7 million.

The Harry Potter prequel stars Eddie Redmayne, Jude Law and Johnny Depp.

And in fifth was Fox’s “Bohemian Rhapsody,” at $6.1 million. Rami Malek has drawn rave reviews for his portrayal of rock group Queen’s talented singer Freddie Mercury.

The coming weeks will see the release of some expected blockbusters, including “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” “The Mule,” “Mary Poppins Returns” and “Aquaman,” which scored a huge $93.6 million over the weekend in China. (afp)

Spice Girl Melanie Brown says she has broken two ribs and badly injured her right hand after suffering an accident.

LOS ANGELES - Spice Girl Melanie Brown says she has broken two ribs and badly injured her right hand after suffering an accident.

The singer, known as Mel B, posted a photo of herself in hospital with her arm in a sling, but did not reveal how she got her injuries.

She said she needed three hours of surgery to repair damage to her hand and has had to cancel a book signing in New York.

Writing on Instagram in a message posted in London, she said: “Thankyou to all the wonderful nurses dr’s and my amazing surgeon for the care and expertise given to me here at the hospital

I’ve been staying at, suffering 2 broken ribs a severed right hand needing emergancy care, to having had to have over a 3 hr surgery to repair the damage hence the purple sling.

“I’ve had to unfortunately cancel my book signing today in NY, I appolagise to each and everyone one of you who bought there tickets to meet me today.

“I’m absolutely gutted but I can assure you it WILL happen at a later date, I promise, but for now my right arm/hand is all stitched up and I’m trying to keep still to heal my broken ribs.

“Ohhh the pain, but I’m in super

safe hands with the care of everyone here at the hospital!!!!! Thank you all for understanding, I love you all.” (sic) She also added the hashtags #accidentshappen and #needtimetoheal.

It comes just a few weeks after the Spice Girls announced their comeback, with Brown reuniting with Geri Horner, Emma Bunton and Melanie Chisholm, but not Victoria Beckham, for a tour next year.

She released her book, Brutally Honest, earlier this year, following an acrimonious divorce from now ex-husband Stephen Belafonte.

France hunts gunman after three killed at Strasbourg Christmas market

Hundreds of police hunted Wednesday for a gunman who shot dead three people and wounded 13, eight seriously, at a famed Christmas market in Strasbourg, on the French border with Germany.

The attack took place Tuesday around 8 pm (1900 GMT) in the heart of the medieval city as the market was closing, sending crowds fleeing for safety.

Much of the centre and the European parliament were on lock down through part of the night as hundreds of police and soldiers searched for the gunman who was reportedly armed with an automatic rifle and a knife.

“The attacker, who was on the S list (of extremists watched by

police), is actively being hunted by security forces,” local officials said in a statement.

“350 policemen and gendarmes are still deployed on the ground,” backed up by helicopters, elite units and soldiers deployed as part of a long-term nationwide antiterrorism operation, the statement said.

The government raised the security alert level for terrorism to its highest, reinforcing border controls and those around all Christmas

markets across France.

However, a terrorist motive “has not yet been established,” deputy Interior minister Laurent Nunez told France Inter radio.

The gunman, who was being monitored for religious extremism, is “known for a number of criminal offences (...) but has never been linked to terrorist offences,” he said.

Celukan Bawang proposed to be tourism-supporting industrial area “Especially now, Benoa has been reclaimed, and I am still confident they will develop their harbor with the authority owned,” said the Regent of Buleleng, Putu Agus Suradnyana, while attending a meeting to discuss about the revision of the Regional Bylaw on RTRWP Bali in the Bali House of Representative’s Joint Meeting Room on Tuesday (Dec. 11).

According to Agus Suradnyana, the area around the Celukan Bawang Harbor has actually been designated as an industrial area. But until now, no industry has been built there other than the steam-fueled power plant (PLTGU) to maintain Bali’s electricity plan as a whole. Meanwhile, he wanted investment in Buleleng to develop and run with a clear legal corridor through the revision of the Regional Bylaw on RTRWP. Therefore, the industry in question must be made concrete and thematic.

“I propose this area (Celukan Bawang—Ed) into a supporting industry for tourism because in fact every week cruise ships dock there and we also have the advantages regarding the potential of the harbor that is safe enough for cruise ships to dock there,” he said.

When made thematic, continued Agus Suradnyana, the existence of the PLTGU will be accommodated because it is a supporter of tourism. On the other hand, he reminded that Buleleng also has a very long beach area while the regional bylaw only sets forth the Lovina area and the Batu Ampar.

“Although this can be regulated in the RDTR of Buleleng district, please also be given flexibility not to be plotted into an agricultural area. However, it can be given a coastal conservation area which is then regulated by Buleleng,” he added.

Agus Suradnyana added, the next arrangement by Buleleng is developing people’s potential and desires. He also hoped the conservation areas can be given space for tourism development seeing the Tembok, Les and Penuktukan village has developed into a hospitality area. However, the Buleleng district government has not been able to issue permits for that because the region indeed has not been regulated in the spatial plan.

“Please help, by giving this space for a conservation area or an agricultural area, but inside it is also possible to build a tourism area,” he said.

Regent of Klungkung, I Nyoman Suwirta, said that some of the district proposals he led had been accommodated in the revised Regional Bylaw. One of them is the proposal of Tegal Besar to Goa Lawah tourist attraction into a Strategic Tourism Area even though it is not entirely converted into a tourism area because there is a temple in it. In addition, he appreciated to the national road development plan in Nusa Penida. Moreover, it is supporting the great aspirations to be realized Nusa Penida as Bali’s golden egg. He proposed Nusa Penida to have a ring road because the presence of many tourist destinations.

“We will give input on destination roads later because we are very overwhelmed in the district. It was just worked on in 2015 so that it remains very narrow. Nusa Penida like in Kuta, also has traffic jams that can last for 1.5 hours to reach Pasih Uug,” he explained.

Study explains how red meat raises heart risk

CLEVELAND - Researchers have more evidence about how eating red meat can raise heart disease risk.

Two studies published Monday show that people who eat red meat — but not vegetarians or people who eat only white meat such as chicken — produce more of a chemical called TMAO, which has been shown to raise heart disease risk.

And they stop making so much of the compound a month after they stop eating red meat.

They also showed that a diet heavy in red meat can change kidney function, a surprising finding that raises more questions about red meat’s effects on the body.

“These studies really show what a large impact a diet that is rich in red meat can have on your metabolism,” said Dr. Stanley Hazen of the Cleveland Clinic, who has been studying the effects of TMAO on heart disease.

“One of our most surprising findings was that a diet rich in red meat actually changed kidney function. We saw that the kidneys were being regulated by a chronic diet. This is something that, as far as I am aware, hasn’t been shown before,” Hazen told NBC News.

TMAO, short for trimethylamine N-oxide, is made by gut bacteria as they digest food. Red meat, especially, causes these gut germs to make a lot of TMAO. Certain species of bacteria produce TMAO when they metabolize choline, lecithin and carnitine — all of which are abundant in red meat, full-fat dairy products and eggs.

Hazen’s team has shown that people who have more TMAO in their blood also have a higher risk of heart disease.

And people with higher TMAO levels also have a higher risk of dying earlier. Vegetarians and vegans have lower levels of TMAO — unless they take certain supplements — and usually also have a lower risk of heart disease than meat-eaters.

One study piggybacked on a federally funded study of diet and showed people’s TMAO levels went up significantly when they were fed a controlled diet rich in red meat. Some people had a 10-fold rise in TMAO levels after a month of eating red meat, Hazen’s team reported in the European Heart Journal.

That didn’t happen in people fed poultry and fish, or vegetarian diets. And other, non-meat sources of saturated fat didn’t affect TMAO. “Interestingly, discontinuation of dietary red meat reduced plasma TMAO within four weeks,” the team wrote.

They did not test intake of dairy products or eggs in this

study, but other work has shown that eating eggs and dairy can raise TMAO levels, also.

In a second study, Hazen’s team showed gut bacteria convert an amino acid called carnitine into TMAO. When they gave carnitine supplements to meat-eaters, their gut bacteria quickly started making TMAO. At first the bodies of vegetarians and vegans did not produce much TMAO even when they took supplements, but after a few weeks they did, Hazen’s team reported in the Journal of Clinical Investigation.

“Omnivores generate significantly more TMAO than vegans/vegetarians from oral carnitine,” they wrote.

Other studies have shown that TMAO may make blood more likely to clot, which would help explain why it raises the risk of heart attacks and stroke. But Hazen said it’s clear that red meat, perhaps because of TMAO, has other bad effects on health.

“Red meat raises risk not only of heart disease but of colorectal cancer,” he said.

Hazen is working on a drug that would lower TMAO lev-

els. He hopes his work might lead to a pill that could lower the risk of heart disease.

“These findings reinforce current dietary recommendations that encourage all ages to follow a heart-healthy eating plan that limits red meat,” said Charlotte Pratt of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, which helped fund the work. “This means eating a variety of foods, including more vegetables, fruits, whole grains, low-fat dairy foods, and plant-based protein sources such as beans and peas.”

Hazen himself has changed his diet since he started studying TMAO. “I have to admit I used to be a really big red meat eater,” he said. Now he doesn’t eat much at all.

He also counsels his patients to watch not only the food they eat, but the supplements they take. “Few studies show effects of taking supplements long-term,” he said. Choline, carnitine and lecithin supplements have the potential to affect heart risk and kidney function, he said. People should try to get the nutrients they need in their diets.

“I tell them to try and get it from real foods, from fruits, from vegetables and from real foods,” Hazen said. (IBP/net)

Raw eggs carry Salmonella, bacteria that can cause severe stomach upset and that every year kill 450 people in the U.S. Salmonella makes 1.2 million people sick every year.

But even egg-free dough isn’t

safe if it contains raw flour, the CDC notes. Uncooked flour can carry a variety of disease-causing germs, including E. coli. An outbreak of E. coli traced to raw flour made 63 people sick in 2016.

So even if you’ve been eating raw cookie dough for years with no apparent ill effects, it’s time to stop, the CDC advises. Products made with cookie dough, such as ice cream, have heated the dough to kill germs.

“Do not taste or eat any raw dough or batter, whether for cookies, tortillas, pizza, biscuits, pancakes, or crafts made with raw

flour, such as homemade play dough or holiday ornaments,” the CDC advises.

“Do not let children play with or eat raw dough, including dough for crafts.”

Handling food, including flour, requires care and hygiene.

“Keep raw foods such as flour or eggs separate from ready-to eatfoods. Because flour is a powder, it can spread easily,” the CDC notes.

“Follow label directions to refrigerate products containing raw dough or eggs until they are cooked. Clean up thoroughly after handling flour, eggs, or raw dough. (IBP/net)

49 articles in Regional Bylaw on RTRWP to be revised

DENPASAR — Discussion on the revision of Regional Bylaw (Perda) No.16/2009 concerning the Regional Spatial Planning (RTRWP) Bali was resumed on Tuesday (Dec. 11). This time, the Special Committee in the Bali House of Representatives invited the regents and mayor in addition to the RTRWP Team. The regents being present were only the Regent of Buleleng and Regent of Klungkung, while the heads of other regions were represented.

Head of Bali Research and Development (Bappeda), I Wayan Wiasthana Ika Putra, stated that in general of the 153 articles in the Regional Bylaw on the RTRWP, 49 articles will be revised according to the initial concept prepared by the RTRWP Team. “About 30 percent of the articles will change. Of course, this will continue to grow and will roll out. The addition of a revised article or reduction, or the addition of a new article is very possible,” he said.

According to Ika Putra, the vision of the elected governor and deputy governor of Bali known as the Nangun Sat Kerthi Loka Bali will also be accommodated apart from making adjustments to legislation at the central level as well as accommodating proposals from the regions. “So, conditions and dynamics of the development of our environment require us to revise some provisions in the Perda,” he explained.

The Bali Development Expert Group as well as the Technical Compiler of the revised Regional Bylaw on RTRWP, Made Arca Wiryawan, explained the need for changes to the articles in the regional regulation. Among them, Article 9 concerning the Space Structure Policy will be accommodated by external dynamics and directives of the governor’s mission regarding the construction

of the Buleleng airport, tourism port and others. This includes the development of Bali Smart Island and Wi-Fi throughout the villages as well as the protection of water resources.

Then, article 24 about the River, Lake and Crossing Network System will be accommodated related to the expansion of Gunaksa Crossing Port service function, crossing ports in the province namely Mentigi Port in Nusa Penida and the development of Munjul Bias Port in Nusa Ceningan, as well as the development of a lake dock.

With regard to the Railroad Network in article 27, there is a sharpening of the content related to the railway development within the Sarbagita Urban Area, northern Bali with southern Bali, and ring road of the Bali Island. Meanwhile, related to the Sea Transportation Network in article 28, one of them will be accommodated about the addition of a special terminal (hubs) of gas energy in Celukan Bawang. The development of an energy hub (LNG hub—Ed) in Celukan Bawang is also regulated in article 33 concerning the Energy Network System.

Furthermore, in Article 95 concerning Airspace Utilization, there is a change in the height of buildings for certain designated areas in certain locations. Article 122 concerns the APZ of the Tourism Allocation Area that will also be added to the Building Coverage Ratio (KDB). It amounts to 40 percent to a maximum of 50 percent in the Regional Tourism Strategic Area (KSPD), as well as a maximum of 40 percent from the previous 10 percent for the KDB KSPKD / KDTWK (Regional Special Tourism Strategic Area). the park was built, the location was formerly a cultural hall before the government office was moved to Dauhwaru.

Head of the Environment Agency, Ketut Karyadi Erawan, previously said the project location was PITBULL Park that still needs to be improved. To secure Christmas and New Year, Denpasar Police deploy 1,179 personnel he said.

Data from the BaliPenida River Agency recorded that of the 633.35 km of coastline, along 215.82 km is experiencing abrasion, while only 108.31 km has been handled so far. This means, there is a total of 107.51 km of coastline still in need of handling.

“We have done a lot, but abrasion has almost taken place throughout Bali reaching hundreds of kilometers. What we have handled has reached hundreds of kilometers. The problem is just in the financing,” said the Head of the Bali-Penida River Agency, I Ketut Jayada, on Tuesday (Dec. 11).

Jayada also requested participation of the regional government, both provinces and districts / municipality in Bali. At least, they can provide political support so that abrasion can be dealt with quickly considering the pace of coastline decline since 2015 has reached an average of 1.86 meters per year.

“We need substantial funding because the governor, regent and all kinds of things can be together to think about it,” he explained.

According to Jayada, abrasion handling cannot only be borne by the Bali-Penida River Agency that relies on funds from central government. Moreover, there is already a strategic plan related to budget allocation. Here, the role of people’s representatives in the central government is highly expected so that Bali can get the budget allocation needed for the abrasion

“This marks the first time since the division that the soldiers of the North and South... are peacefully crossing the military demarcation line,” the ministry said in a statement.

Japan’s economy contracts 2.5 pct in 3Q on weaker spending

TOKYO - Japan’s economy shrank at a worse than anticipated annualized rate of 2.5 percent in July-September due to weaker consumer demand and corporate investment.

The revised figure released Monday was more than double the 1.2 percent contraction reported earlier. Economists say the setback for the world’s third-largest economy is likely temporary.

The data from the Cabinet Office shows the seasonally adjusted gross domestic product — the total value of a nation’s goods and services — dipped 0.6 percent in the third quarter from the previous quarter.

Japan’s economy returned to expansion in the April-June quarter but contracted in the quarter before that. That contraction ended the longest straight period of expansion for Japan in nearly three decades.

Yoshimasa Maruyama, chief market economist at SMBC Nikko Securities in Tokyo, said the new data requires a revision of assessments about economic growth and investment.

“But the overall trend of economic growth continues,” he said in a report, noting that recent natural disasters had crimped growth.

Natural disasters weighed on consumer travel and spending, which means growth could recover if such events don’t occur during the year’s final quarter.

The closure of a major airport in the western Kansai area after a typhoon was among the factors that hurt in the third quarter. A major earthquake also hit the northernmost island of Hokkaido during the quarter, causing deadly landslides and widespread blackouts.

British ad giant WPP axes net 2,500 jobs

Global advertising giant WPP on Tuesday unveiled a new growth plan and said it would axe a net 2,500 jobs as it moves on from the controversial exit of old boss Martin Sorrell. The company, which is struggling to compete with US technology titans Google and Facebook, said in a statement that

it hoped to return WPP to growth after a strategic review.

The three-year overhaul will cost WPP £300 million ($380 million, 333 million euros), but seeks to save £275 million annually by the end of 2021. WPP will slash 3,500 jobs at its operations but will create 1,000 positions elsewhere, according to

people familiar with the matter.

The move will largely impact administration roles as the firm seeks to merge 100 offices and shut 80 sites. WPP employs more than 130,000 people worldwide, of which 14,000 are in Britain.

“The restructuring of our business will enable increased invest-

ment in creativity, technology and talent, enhancing our capabilities in the categories with the greatest potential for future growth,” said chief executive Mark Read, who took the reins in September.

“As well as improving our offer and creating opportunities for clients, this investment will drive

sustainable, profitable growth for our shareholders.”

The London-listed group has been in turmoil since Sorrell sensationally quit earlier this year amid allegations of personal misconduct.

Hunt for gunman after Strasbourg market attack kills three

STRASBOURG - Hundreds of security forces were Wednesday deployed in the hunt for a lone gunman who killed at least three people and wounded a dozen others at the famed Christmas market in Strasbourg, with the French government raising the security alert level and reinforcing border controls.

Some 350 people, including police, troops and helicopters were on the heels of the attacker who had “sowed terror” in the city, Interior Minister Christophe Castaner said.

The killer opened fire at around 8pm (1900 GMT) on one of the city’s busiest streets, sending crowds of evening shoppers fleeing for safety.

Castaner said the gunman had killed three people and wounded 12.

Soldiers patrolling the area as part of regular anti-terror operations exchanged fire with the suspect and wounded him, but could not stop him escaping, police sources said. A soldier was slightly injured by a ricohet from a shot by the gunman.

Castaner also said France had raised its security alert level to “emergency attack” with “the implementation of reinforced border controls and tightened controls on all Christmas markets in France to avoid the risk of a copycat” attack.

The gunman has been identified and was on a watchlist of suspected extremists, a statement from local security services said.

France’s security forces, already on high alert after a series of terror attacks since 2015, are particularly stretched at the moment due to anti-government protests that have

swept the country.

“I heard shooting and then there was pandemonium,” one witness, who gave his name as Fatih, told AFP. “People were running everywhere.”

He said he had seen three people injured on the ground only a few metres (feet) from the giant Christmas tree in the centre of the city.

Shortly after the shooting, lines of police vehicles and ambulances streamed into the market area, under festive lights declaring the city the “capital of Christmas.”

“We heard several shots, three perhaps, and we saw people running,” one witness told AFP, asking not to be named.

“One of them fell down, I don’t know whether it was because she was tripped up or if she was hit,” the witness said.

President Emmanuel Macron expressed on Twitter the solidarity of the whole nation after holding a crisis meeting with cabinet officials in Paris.

Two separate security sources told AFP on condition of anonymity that the shooter was believed to be a 29-year-old from the city, whose name was given as Cherif, and who was set to be arrested on Tuesday morning.

He was being investigated over an attempted murder, one of the sources said.

Several areas neighbouring the Christmas market were sealed off on Tuesday night and residents were being told to stay indoors.

Many people took refuge in local restaurants and bars which pulled down their shutters.

“We let everyone inside, down into the wine cellar. They’re locked in there,” local restaurant owner Mouad, 33, told AFP. A police source, again speaking on condition of anonymity, said security forces had opened fire in an area of the city where the suspect was thought to be hiding.

The source did not give the address and it was unclear if the shooter had been located.

Specialist anti-terror prosecutors have opened an investigation into the incident in Strasbourg, which lies on the border with Germany.

Several residents of the city have been detained in recent years for trying to reach jihadist groups in Syria, or have been arrested upon their return.

“Shocked and saddened by the terrible attack in Strasbourg. My thoughts are with all of those affected and with the French people,” British Prime Minister Theresa May wrote on Twitter. (afp)

In 2016, a 23-year-old Tunisian killed 12 and injured 48 others when he ploughed a truck into a Christmas market in Berlin in an attack claimed by the Islamic State group.

Three years after groups of jihadists gunned down and blew up 130 people in Paris on November 13, 2015, French counter-terror officials say their focus has shifted.

Rather than coordinated attacks, their main concern is attacks by “lone wolves” -- self-radicalised individuals acting without links to terror groups such as Islamic State.

Most recently a 20-yearold Chechnya-born man went on a knife rampage in central Paris last May, killing one man and injuring four other people on a Saturday night.

A total of 246 people have been killed in terror attacks in France since 2015, according to an AFP toll.

Mexico cancels oil auctions under new president MEXICO CITY - Mexico’s energy regulator said Tuesday it was canceling its remaining oil block auctions for private firms, the centerpiece of the country’s landmark energy reform, now under attack by new President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.

The National Hydrocarbons Commission (CNH) said it was scrapping the two pending auctions because the energy ministry had asked it to withdraw the 46 blocks up for grabs so it could “review energy policy and evaluate the results and progress” made under the 2013 reform.

“Since the totality of the areas under consideration in each auction have been excluded... we have approved the cancellation of the auctions in question,” it said in a statement.

The CNH had already suspended the auctions after Lopez Obrador won a landslide election victory in July.

Former president Enrique Pena Nieto launched the ambitious energy reform in a bid to breathe new life into Mexico’s oil sector, where production had plummeted under 76 years of monopoly by state firm Pemex.

But Lopez Obrador, an antiestablishment leftist and energy nationalist, has criticized the opening of the sector to private

and foreign companies as a corruption-riddled “farse.”

The blocks up for auction in what would have been the 10th and 11th tenders of the third round of the process are located in the oil-rich far north and south of the Gulf of Mexico.

Since the energy reforms were launched, Mexico has awarded more than 100 contracts to firms including Exxon-Mobil, Shell, Total and BP, for total potential investment that the previous government calculated at $150 billion.

Lopez Obrador said earlier that companies should show they are following through on their promised investments within three years or have their oil blocks taken away.

“As they say in sports, the ball’s in their court. If there’s investment and they produce, then go ahead. If they’re just sitting on the contracts to speculate, we can’t allow that,” he told a press conference.

The CNH also announced a six-month postponement to a separate tender to seek partners for Pemex projects that had been scheduled for early next year.

After calling for help and managing to subdue the serpent, the men put it into a cage in Pucuang Anam village in Sumatra and asked a local zoo for assistance. But the zoo declined to take in the python, citing overcapacity.

“For now we are just keeping it in the cage so people can

come and have a look”, Coto told AFP, adding that the snake was eight metres (26 feet) long.

Pythons are some of the largest snakes in the world, but are not known to measure more than seven metres in the wild.

Indonesia’s Aceh whips men for sharia-banned gambling

A group of men caught gambling were publicly whipped in Indonesia’s conservative Muslim province of Aceh on Tuesday as a crowd of onlookers cheered.

The half dozen men were arrested this year at an internet cafe for online gambling -- an offence under Islamic law -- earning them between seven and 11 strokes each

from a rattan cane.

At least one of the men winced in pain as a masked sharia officer lashed his back outside a mosque in East Aceh district. Dozens in the crowd jeered and called for the men to be whipped harder.

“They have violated the Qanun Jinayah (Islamic law) by being involved in gambling,” Muliana,

head of the general crime unit at the local prosecutors’ office, told AFP. Public flogging is a common punishment in Aceh for a range of offences including gambling, drinking alcohol, and having gay sex or relations outside of marriage.

Located at the northern tip of Sumatra island, it is the only province in the world’s largest Muslim-

majority country that imposes Islamic law.

Aceh adopted sharia after it was granted special autonomy in 2001, an attempt by the central government to quell a long-running separatist insurgency.

Rights groups slam public caning as cruel, and Indonesia’s President Joko Widodo has called for it to end.

But the practice has wide support among Aceh’s mostly Muslim population -- around 98 percent of its five million residents practise Islam.

Earlier this year, Aceh said that flogging would be carried out behind prison walls in future, but some local governments have continued public whippings. (afp)

World champion Momota makes electric start to BWF Finals

SHANGHAI - World badminton champion Kento Momota made a lightning start at the BWF World Tour Finals in China on Wednesday, rampaging past India’s overwhelmed Sameer Verma in just 36 minutes.

Rockets blast Blazers, Spurs eclipse Suns

LOS ANGELES - The Toronto Raptors shrugged off the absence of Kawhi Leonard to stretch their lead at the top of the Eastern Conference on Tuesday, breezing past the Los Angeles Clippers with a 123-99 victory.

Leonard, ruled out just hours before tip-off after complaining of a sore hip, could also miss the Raptors’ game against the reigning NBA champion Golden State Warriors on Wednesday.

Toronto, however, laid on a devastating scoring display to overwhelm the Clippers and serve notice that they remain a formidable threat even without the in-form Leonard.

Serge Ibaka and Kyle Lowry led the way for the Raptors with 25 and 21 points respectively while four other players made double figures.

The Clippers offense however struggled to make any inroads against the Toronto defense, with starters Tobias Harris and Danilo Gallinari producing just 21 points between them.

Tyrone Wallace (15 points) and Boban Marjanovic (18) produced a burst of scoring off the bench,

but the Clippers never threatened a Toronto team that surged into a 36-23 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Raptors improved to 22-7 with the win to go three games clear of Milwaukee at the top of the standings. The Clippers loss gives them an identical record to city rivals the Los Angeles Lakers, with both teams on 17-10.

Earlier Tuesday, James Harden scored 29 points as the Houston Rockets halted their three-game losing streak with a 111-103 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers on Tuesday.

Icardi magic can’t save fallen giants Inter from Champions League exit Mauro Icardi rescued a 1-1 draw for Inter Milan against PSV Eindhoven in Tuesday’s final group game but it proved not enough as the Chinese-owned Italian giants crashed out of the UEFA Champions League.

Goalkeeper Alisson Becker was labelled a “life saver” by Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp for a last-gasp save that secured a 1-0 win over Napoli at Anfield and progress to the last 16 of the Champions League on Tuesday.

Mohamed Salah’s stunning solo effort put the hosts in front 11 minutes before half-time, but Liverpool were nearly made to pay for their profligacy in missing a series of second-half chances.

Alisson had barely been tested until the Brazilian number one spread himself brilliantly to deny Arkadiusz Milik a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser and go a long way to justifying the then-world record £67-million ($85 million) fee for a goalkeeper Liverpool paid Roma in July.

“If I knew Alisson was this good –- I would have paid double,” joked Klopp. “The goal Mo scored, what a goal! And the save Ali made (was) unbelievable. It was of course a life saver tonight.”

Despite losing all three of their away games in Group C, three home wins at fortress Anfield were enough to see Liverpool through to the knockout stage on goals scored over the Italians in second place behind Paris Saint-Germain, who won 4-1 away to Red Star Belgrade to secure top spot.

“I’m still full of adrenaline, I could feel it in bubbles,” added Klopp. “This game was just amazing. The boys played with their whole heart on the pitch.”

Napoli should have levelled 12 minutes from time when Jose Maria Callejon spooned over a glorious chance at the back post.

Mohamed Salah’s stunning solo effort put the hosts in front 11 minutes before half-time, but Liverpool were nearly made to pay for their profligacy in missing a series of second-half chances.

World champion Momota makes electric start to BWF Finals

SHANGHAI - World badminton champion Kento Momota made a lightning start at the BWF World Tour Finals in China on Wednesday, rampaging past India’s overwhelmed Sameer Verma in just 36 minutes.

The Japanese star is looking to put the seal on a breakthrough year in which he has risen to number one in the rankings and become world champion for the first time.

Rockets blast Blazers, Spurs eclipse Suns

LOS ANGELES - The Toronto Raptors shrugged off the absence of Kawhi Leonard to stretch their lead at the top of the Eastern Conference on Tuesday, breezing past the Los Angeles Clippers with a 123-99 victory.

Leonard, ruled out just hours before tip-off after complaining of a sore hip, could also miss the Raptors’ game against the reigning NBA champion Golden State Warriors on Wednesday.

Toronto, however, laid on a devastating scoring display to overwhelm the Clippers and serve notice that they remain a formidable threat even without the in-form Leonard.

Serge Ibaka and Kyle Lowry led the way for the Raptors with 25 and 21 points respectively while four other players made double figures.

The Clippers offense however struggled to make any inroads against the Toronto defense, with starters Tobias Harris and Danilo Gallinari producing just 21 points between them.

Tyrone Wallace (15 points) and Boban Marjanovic (18) produced a burst of scoring off the bench,

but the Clippers never threatened a Toronto team that surged into a 36-23 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Hunt for gunman after Strasbourg market attack kills three

STRASBOURG - Hundreds of security forces were Wednesday deployed in the hunt for a lone gunman who killed at least three people and wounded a dozen others at the famed Christmas market in Strasbourg, with the French government raising the security alert level and reinforcing border controls.

Some 350 people, including police, troops and helicopters were on the heels of the attacker who had “sowed terror” in the city, Interior Minister Christophe Castaner said.

The killer opened fire at around 8pm (1900 GMT) on one of the city’s busiest streets, sending crowds of evening shoppers fleeing for safety.

Castaner said the gunman had killed three people and wounded 12.

Soldiers patrolling the area as part of regular anti-terror operations exchanged fire with the suspect and wounded him, but could not stop him escaping, police sources said. A soldier was slightly injured by a ricohet from a shot by the gunman.

Castaner also said France had raised its security alert level to “emergency attack” with “the implementation of reinforced border controls and tightened controls on all Christmas markets in France to avoid the risk of a copycat” attack.

The gunman has been identified and was on a watchlist of suspected extremists, a statement from local security services said.

France’s security forces, already on high alert after a series of terror attacks since 2015, are particularly stretched at the moment due to anti-government protests that have

swept the country.

“I heard shooting and then there was pandemonium,” one witness, who gave his name as Fatih, told AFP. “People were running everywhere.”

He said he had seen three people injured on the ground only a few metres (feet) from the giant Christmas tree in the centre of the city.

Shortly after the shooting, lines of police vehicles and ambulances streamed into the market area, under festive lights declaring the city the “capital of Christmas.”

“We heard several shots, three perhaps, and we saw people running,” one witness told AFP, asking not to be named.

“One of them fell down, I don’t know whether it was because she was tripped up or if she was hit,” the witness said.

President Emmanuel Macron expressed on Twitter the solidarity of the whole nation after holding a crisis meeting with cabinet officials in Paris.

Two separate security sources told AFP on condition of anonymity that the shooter was believed to be a 29-year-old from the city, whose name was given as Cherif, and who was set to be arrested on Tuesday morning.

He was being investigated over an attempted murder, one of the sources said.

Several areas neighbouring the Christmas market were sealed off on Tuesday night and residents were being told to stay indoors.

Many people took refuge in local restaurants and bars which pulled down their shutters.

“We let everyone inside, down into the wine cellar. They’re locked in there,” local restaurant owner Mouad, 33, told AFP. A police source, again speaking on condition of anonymity, said security forces had opened fire in an area of the city where the suspect was thought to be hiding.

The source did not give the address and it was unclear if the shooter had been located.

Specialist anti-terror prosecutors have opened an investigation into the incident in Strasbourg, which lies on the border with Germany.

Several residents of the city have been detained in recent years for trying to reach jihadist groups in Syria, or have been arrested upon their return.

“Shocked and saddened by the terrible attack in Strasbourg. My thoughts are with all of those affected and with the French people,” British Prime Minister Theresa May wrote on Twitter. (afp)

In 2016, a 23-year-old Tunisian killed 12 and injured 48 others when he ploughed a truck into a Christmas market in Berlin in an attack claimed by the Islamic State group.

Three years after groups of jihadists gunned down and blew up 130 people in Paris on November 13, 2015, French counter-terror officials say their focus has shifted.

Rather than coordinated attacks, their main concern is attacks by “lone wolves” -- self-radicalised individuals acting without links to terror groups such as Islamic State.

Most recently a 20-yearold Chechnya-born man went on a knife rampage in central Paris last May, killing one man and injuring four other people on a Saturday night.

A total of 246 people have been killed in terror attacks in France since 2015, according to an AFP toll.

Mexico cancels oil auctions under new president MEXICO CITY - Mexico’s energy regulator said Tuesday it was canceling its remaining oil block auctions for private firms, the centerpiece of the country’s landmark energy reform, now under attack by new President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.

The National Hydrocarbons Commission (CNH) said it was scrapping the two pending auctions because the energy ministry had asked it to withdraw the 46 blocks up for grabs so it could “review energy policy and evaluate the results and progress” made under the 2013 reform.

“Since the totality of the areas under consideration in each auction have been excluded... we have approved the cancellation of the auctions in question,” it said in a statement.

The CNH had already suspended the auctions after Lopez Obrador won a landslide election victory in July.

Former president Enrique Pena Nieto launched the ambitious energy reform in a bid to breathe new life into Mexico’s oil sector, where production had plummeted under 76 years of monopoly by state firm Pemex.

But Lopez Obrador, an antiestablishment leftist and energy nationalist, has criticized the opening of the sector to private

and foreign companies as a corruption-riddled “farse.”

The blocks up for auction in what would have been the 10th and 11th tenders of the third round of the process are located in the oil-rich far north and south of the Gulf of Mexico.

Since the energy reforms were launched, Mexico has awarded more than 100 contracts to firms including Exxon-Mobil, Shell, Total and BP, for total potential investment that the previous government calculated at $150 billion.

Lopez Obrador said earlier that companies should show they are following through on their promised investments within three years or have their oil blocks taken away.

“As they say in sports, the ball’s in their court. If there’s investment and they produce, then go ahead. If they’re just sitting on the contracts to speculate, we can’t allow that,” he told a press conference.

The CNH also announced a six-month postponement to a separate tender to seek partners for Pemex projects that had been scheduled for early next year.

Lopez Obrador said Sunday he was increasing Pemex’s budget by $3.7 billion for 2019 in a bid to boost production. (afp)

Great snakes! Indonesians wrestle with giant python

A viral video showing a gigantic python wrapping itself around an Indonesian villager has secured more than a million views, after locals wrestled with the serpent before successfully caging it.

The villagers initially thought the giant snake, which was resting by the river, was just an old log before one of them touched the serpent, triggering it into action.

The November 22 video, shot by villager Ronal Efendi Coto, shows the man fighting as others try to pry him loose from the python’s notorious death grip.

After calling for help and managing to subdue the serpent, the men put it into a cage in Pucuang Anam village in Sumatra and asked a local zoo for assistance. But the zoo declined to take in the python, citing overcapacity.

“For now we are just keeping it in the cage so people can

come and have a look”, Coto told AFP, adding that the snake was eight metres (26 feet) long.

Pythons are some of the largest snakes in the world, but are not known to measure more than seven metres in the wild.

Indonesia’s Aceh whips men for sharia-banned gambling

A group of men caught gambling were publicly whipped in Indonesia’s conservative Muslim province of Aceh on Tuesday as a crowd of onlookers cheered.

The half dozen men were arrested this year at an internet cafe for online gambling -- an offence under Islamic law -- earning them between seven and 11 strokes each

from a rattan cane.

At least one of the men winced in pain as a masked sharia officer lashed his back outside a mosque in East Aceh district. Dozens in the crowd jeered and called for the men to be whipped harder.

“They have violated the Qanun Jinayah (Islamic law) by being involved in gambling,” Muliana,

head of the general crime unit at the local prosecutors’ office, told AFP. Public flogging is a common punishment in Aceh for a range of offences including gambling, drinking alcohol, and having gay sex or relations outside of marriage.

Located at the northern tip of Sumatra island, it is the only province in the world’s largest Muslim-

majority country that imposes Islamic law.

Aceh adopted sharia after it was granted special autonomy in 2001, an attempt by the central government to quell a long-running separatist insurgency.

Rights groups slam public caning as cruel, and Indonesia’s President Joko Widodo has called for it to end.

But the practice has wide support among Aceh’s mostly Muslim population -- around 98 percent of its five million residents practise Islam.

Earlier this year, Aceh said that flogging would be carried out behind prison walls in future, but some local governments have continued public whippings. (afp)

Japan’s economy contracts 2.5 pct in 3Q on weaker spending

TOKYO - Japan’s economy shrank at a worse than anticipated annualized rate of 2.5 percent in July-September due to weaker consumer demand and corporate investment.

The revised figure released Monday was more than double the 1.2 percent contraction reported earlier. Economists say the setback for the world’s third-largest economy is likely temporary.

The data from the Cabinet Office shows the seasonally adjusted gross domestic product — the total value of a nation’s goods and services — dipped 0.6 percent in the third quarter from the previous quarter.

Japan’s economy returned to expansion in the April-June quarter but contracted in the quarter before that. That contraction ended the longest straight period of expansion for Japan in nearly three decades.

Yoshimasa Maruyama, chief market economist at SMBC Nikko Securities in Tokyo, said the new data requires a revision of assessments about economic growth and investment.

“But the overall trend of economic growth continues,” he said in a report, noting that recent natural disasters had crimped growth.

Natural disasters weighed on consumer travel and spending, which means growth could recover if such events don’t occur during the year’s final quarter.

The closure of a major airport in the western Kansai area after a typhoon was among the factors that hurt in the third quarter. A major earthquake also hit the northernmost island of Hokkaido during the quarter, causing deadly landslides and widespread blackouts.

British ad giant WPP axes net 2,500 jobs

Global advertising giant WPP on Tuesday unveiled a new growth plan and said it would axe a net 2,500 jobs as it moves on from the controversial exit of old boss Martin Sorrell. The company, which is struggling to compete with US technology titans Google and Facebook, said in a statement that

it hoped to return WPP to growth after a strategic review.

The three-year overhaul will cost WPP £300 million ($380 million, 333 million euros), but seeks to save £275 million annually by the end of 2021. WPP will slash 3,500 jobs at its operations but will create 1,000 positions elsewhere, according to

people familiar with the matter.

The move will largely impact administration roles as the firm seeks to merge 100 offices and shut 80 sites. WPP employs more than 130,000 people worldwide, of which 14,000 are in Britain.

“The restructuring of our business will enable increased invest-

ment in creativity, technology and talent, enhancing our capabilities in the categories with the greatest potential for future growth,” said chief executive Mark Read, who took the reins in September.

“As well as improving our offer and creating opportunities for clients, this investment will drive

sustainable, profitable growth for our shareholders.”

The London-listed group has been in turmoil since Sorrell sensationally quit earlier this year amid allegations of personal misconduct.

This means, there is a total of 107.51 km of coastline still in need of handling.

“We have done a lot, but abrasion has almost taken place throughout Bali reaching hundreds of kilometers. What we have handled has reached hundreds of kilometers. The problem is just in the financing,” said the Head of the Bali-Penida River Agency, I Ketut Jayada, on Tuesday (Dec. 11).

Jayada also requested participation of the regional government, both provinces and districts / municipality in Bali. At least, they can provide political support so that abrasion can be dealt with quickly considering the pace of coastline decline since 2015 has reached an average of 1.86 meters per year.

“We need substantial funding because the governor, regent and all kinds of things can be together to think about it,” he explained.

According to Jayada, abrasion handling cannot only be borne by the Bali-Penida River Agency that relies on funds from central government. Moreover, there is already a strategic plan related to budget allocation. Study explains how red meat raises heart risk

CLEVELAND - Researchers have more evidence about how eating red meat can raise heart disease risk.

Two studies published Monday show that people who eat red meat — but not vegetarians or people who eat only white meat such as chicken — produce more of a chemical called TMAO, which has been shown to raise heart disease risk.

And they stop making so much of the compound a month after they stop eating red meat.

They also showed that a diet heavy in red meat can change kidney function, a surprising finding that raises more questions about red meat’s effects on the body.

“These studies really show what a large impact a diet that is rich in red meat can have on your metabolism,” said Dr. Stanley Hazen of the Cleveland Clinic, who has been studying the effects of TMAO on heart disease.

“One of our most surprising findings was that a diet rich in red meat actually changed kidney function. We saw that the kidneys were being regulated by a chronic diet. This is something that, as far as I am aware, hasn’t been shown before,” Hazen told NBC News.

TMAO, short for trimethylamine N-oxide, is made by gut bacteria as they digest food. Red meat, especially, causes these gut germs to make a lot of TMAO. Certain species of bacteria produce TMAO when they metabolize choline, lecithin and carnitine — all of which are abundant in red meat, full-fat dairy products and eggs.

Hazen’s team has shown that people who have more TMAO in their blood also have a higher risk of heart disease.

And people with higher TMAO levels also have a higher risk of dying earlier. Vegetarians and vegans have lower levels of TMAO — unless they take certain supplements — and usually also have a lower risk of heart disease than meat-eaters.

One study piggybacked on a federally funded study of diet and showed people’s TMAO levels went up significantly when they were fed a controlled diet rich in red meat. Some people had a 10-fold rise in TMAO levels after a month of eating red meat, Hazen’s team reported in the European Heart Journal.

That didn’t happen in people fed poultry and fish, or vegetarian diets. And other, non-meat sources of saturated fat didn’t affect TMAO. “Interestingly, discontinuation of dietary red meat reduced plasma TMAO within four weeks,” the team wrote.

They did not test intake of dairy products or eggs in this

study, but other work has shown that eating eggs and dairy can raise TMAO levels, also.

In a second study, Hazen’s team showed gut bacteria convert an amino acid called carnitine into TMAO. When they gave carnitine supplements to meat-eaters, their gut bacteria quickly started making TMAO. At first the bodies of vegetarians and vegans did not produce much TMAO even when they took supplements, but after a few weeks they did, Hazen’s team reported in the Journal of Clinical Investigation.

“Omnivores generate significantly more TMAO than vegans/vegetarians from oral carnitine,” they wrote.

Other studies have shown that TMAO may make blood more likely to clot, which would help explain why it raises the risk of heart attacks and stroke. But Hazen said it’s clear that red meat, perhaps because of TMAO, has other bad effects on health.

“Red meat raises risk not only of heart disease but of colorectal cancer,” he said.

Hazen is working on a drug that would lower TMAO lev-

els. He hopes his work might lead to a pill that could lower the risk of heart disease.

“These findings reinforce current dietary recommendations that encourage all ages to follow a heart-healthy eating plan that limits red meat,” said Charlotte Pratt of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, which helped fund the work. “This means eating a variety of foods, including more vegetables, fruits, whole grains, low-fat dairy foods, and plant-based protein sources such as beans and peas.”

Hazen himself has changed his diet since he started studying TMAO. “I have to admit I used to be a really big red meat eater,” he said. Now he doesn’t eat much at all.

He also counsels his patients to watch not only the food they eat, but the supplements they take. “Few studies show effects of taking supplements long-term,” he said. Choline, carnitine and lecithin supplements have the potential to affect heart risk and kidney function, he said. People should try to get the nutrients they need in their diets.

“I tell them to try and get it from real foods, from fruits, from vegetables and from real foods,” Hazen said. (IBP/net)

safe if it contains raw flour, the CDC notes. Uncooked flour can carry a variety of disease-causing germs, including E. coli. An outbreak of E. coli traced to raw flour made 63 people sick in 2016.

So even if you’ve been eating raw cookie dough for years with no apparent ill effects, it’s time to stop, the CDC advises. Products made with cookie dough, such as ice cream, have heated the dough to kill germs.

“Do not taste or eat any raw dough or batter, whether for cookies, tortillas, pizza, biscuits, pancakes, or crafts made with raw

flour, such as homemade play dough or holiday ornaments,” the CDC advises.

“Do not let children play with or eat raw dough, including dough for crafts.”

Handling food, including flour, requires care and hygiene.

“Keep raw foods such as flour or eggs separate from ready-to eatfoods. Because flour is a powder, it can spread easily,” the CDC notes.

“Follow label directions to refrigerate products containing raw dough or eggs until they are cooked. Clean up thoroughly after handling flour, eggs, or raw dough. (IBP/net)

DENPASAR — Discussion on the revision of Regional Bylaw (Perda) No.16/2009 concerning the Regional Spatial Planning (RTRWP) Bali was resumed on Tuesday (Dec. 11). This time, the Special Committee in the Bali House of Representatives invited the regents and mayor in addition to the RTRWP Team. The regents being present were only the Regent of Buleleng and Regent of Klungkung, while the heads of other regions were represented.

Head of Bali Research and Development (Bappeda), I Wayan Wiasthana Ika Putra, stated that in general of the 153 articles in the Regional Bylaw on the RTRWP, 49 articles will be revised according to the initial concept prepared by the RTRWP Team. “About 30 percent of the articles will change. Of course, this will continue to grow and will roll out. The addition of a revised article or reduction, or the addition of a new article is very possible,” he said.

According to Ika Putra, the vision of the elected governor and deputy governor of Bali known as the Nangun Sat Kerthi Loka Bali will also be accommodated apart from making adjustments to legislation at the central level as well as accommodating proposals from the regions. “So, conditions and dynamics of the development of our environment require us to revise some provisions in the Perda,” he explained.

The Bali Development Expert Group as well as the Technical Compiler of the revised Regional Bylaw on RTRWP, Made Arca Wiryawan, explained the need for changes to the articles in the regional regulation. Among them, Article 9 concerning the Space Structure Policy will be accommodated by external dynamics and directives of the governor’s mission regarding the construction

of the Buleleng airport, tourism port and others. This includes the development of Bali Smart Island and Wi-Fi throughout the villages as well as the protection of water resources.

Then, article 24 about the River, Lake and Crossing Network System will be accommodated related to the expansion of Gunaksa Crossing Port service function, crossing ports in the province namely Mentigi Port in Nusa Penida and the development of Munjul Bias Port in Nusa Ceningan, as well as the development of a lake dock.

With regard to the Railroad Network in article 27, there is a sharpening of the content related to the railway development within the Sarbagita Urban Area, northern Bali with southern Bali, and ring road of the Bali Island. Celukan Bawang proposed to be tourism-supporting industrial area “Especially now, Benoa has been reclaimed, and I am still confident they will develop their harbor with the authority owned,” said the Regent of Buleleng, Putu Agus Suradnyana, while attending a meeting to discuss about the revision of the Regional Bylaw on RTRWP Bali in the Bali House of Representative’s Joint Meeting Room on Tuesday (Dec. 11).

According to Agus Suradnyana, the area around the Celukan Bawang Harbor has actually been designated as an industrial area. But until now, no industry has been built there other than the steam-fueled power plant (PLTGU) to maintain Bali’s electricity plan as a whole. Meanwhile, he wanted investment in Buleleng to develop and run with a clear legal corridor through the revision of the Regional Bylaw on RTRWP. Therefore, the industry in question must be made concrete and thematic.

“I propose this area (Celukan Bawang—Ed) into a supporting industry for tourism because in fact every week cruise ships dock there and we also have the advantages regarding the potential of the harbor that is safe enough for cruise ships to dock there,” he said.

When made thematic, continued Agus Suradnyana, the existence of the PLTGU will be accommodated because it is a supporter of tourism. On the other hand, he reminded that Buleleng also has a very long beach area while the regional bylaw only sets forth the Lovina area and the Batu Ampar.

“Although this can be regulated in the RDTR of Buleleng district, please also be given flexibility not to be plotted into an agricultural area. However, it can be given a coastal conservation area which is then regulated by Buleleng,” he added.

Agus Suradnyana added, the next arrangement by Buleleng is developing people’s potential and desires. He also hoped the conservation areas can be given space for tourism development seeing the Tembok, Les and Penuktukan village has developed into a hospitality area. However, the Buleleng district government has not been able to issue permits for that because the region indeed has not been regulated in the spatial plan.

“Please help, by giving this space for a conservation area or an agricultural area, but inside it is also possible to build a tourism area,” he said.

Regent of Klungkung, I Nyoman Suwirta, said that some of the district proposals he led had been accommodated in the revised Regional Bylaw. One of them is the proposal of Tegal Besar to Goa Lawah tourist attraction into a Strategic Tourism Area even though it is not entirely converted into a tourism area because there is a temple in it. In addition, he appreciated to the national road development plan in Nusa Penida. Moreover, it is supporting the great aspirations to be realized Nusa Penida as Bali’s golden egg. He proposed Nusa Penida to have a ring road because the presence of many tourist destinations.

LOS ANGELES - Disney’s “Ralph Breaks the Internet” has topped the North American box office for the third week in a row, taking in an estimated $16.3 million over the weekend, industry tracker Exhibitor Relations said Monday.

The animated film, a sequel to 2012’s “Wreck It Ralph,” has sold $141 million in domestic tickets since it opened and has helped Disney make box office history again this year with more than $7 billion in global box office earnings for 2018.

Coming in second over the weekend was “The Grinch,” which sold $15 million in tickets. Benedict Cumberbatch voices the grouchy Seuss-inspired title character in that film.

In third spot was MGM’s boxing drama “Creed II,” at $10 million. This latest in the long-running “Rocky” series stars Michael B. Jordan as Adonis Creed as he -- coached by the aging Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) -- takes on the son of the boxer who killed his father.

Fourth place went to “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” from Warner Bros., with a take of $7 million.

The Harry Potter prequel stars Eddie Redmayne, Jude Law and Johnny Depp.

And in fifth was Fox’s “Bohemian Rhapsody,” at $6.1 million. Rami Malek has drawn rave reviews for his portrayal of rock group Queen’s talented singer Freddie Mercury.

The coming weeks will see the release of some expected blockbusters, including “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” “The Mule,” “Mary Poppins Returns” and “Aquaman,” which scored a huge $93.6 million over the weekend in China. (afp)

LOS ANGELES - Spice Girl Melanie Brown says she has broken two ribs and badly injured her right hand after suffering an accident.

The singer, known as Mel B, posted a photo of herself in hospital with her arm in a sling, but did not reveal how she got her injuries.

She said she needed three hours of surgery to repair damage to her hand and has had to cancel a book signing in New York.

Writing on Instagram in a message posted in London, she said: “Thankyou to all the wonderful nurses dr’s and my amazing surgeon for the care and expertise given to me here at the hospital

I’ve been staying at, suffering 2 broken ribs a severed right hand needing emergancy care, to having had to have over a 3 hr surgery to repair the damage hence the purple sling.

“I’ve had to unfortunately cancel my book signing today in NY, I appolagise to each and everyone one of you who bought there tickets to meet me today.

“I’m absolutely gutted but I can assure you it WILL happen at a later date, I promise, but for now my right arm/hand is all stitched up and I’m trying to keep still to heal my broken ribs.

“Ohhh the pain, but I’m in super

safe hands with the care of everyone here at the hospital!!!!! Thank you all for understanding, I love you all.” (sic) She also added the hashtags #accidentshappen and #needtimetoheal.

It comes just a few weeks after the Spice Girls announced their comeback, with Brown reuniting with Geri Horner, Emma Bunton and Melanie Chisholm, but not Victoria Beckham, for a tour next year.

She released her book, Brutally Honest, earlier this year, following an acrimonious divorce from now ex-husband Stephen Belafonte.

France hunts gunman after three killed at Strasbourg Christmas market

Hundreds of police hunted Wednesday for a gunman who shot dead three people and wounded 13, eight seriously, at a famed Christmas market in Strasbourg, on the French border with Germany.

The attack took place Tuesday around 8 pm (1900 GMT) in the heart of the medieval city as the market was closing, sending crowds fleeing for safety.

Much of the centre and the European parliament were on lock down through part of the night as hundreds of police and soldiers searched for the gunman who was reportedly armed with an automatic rifle and a knife.

“The attacker, who was on the S list (of extremists watched by

police), is actively being hunted by security forces,” local officials said in a statement.

“350 policemen and gendarmes are still deployed on the ground,” backed up by helicopters, elite units and soldiers deployed as part of a long-term nationwide antiterrorism operation, the statement said.

The government raised the security alert level for terrorism to its highest, reinforcing border controls and those around all Christmas

markets across France.

However, a terrorist motive “has not yet been established,” deputy Interior minister Laurent Nunez told France Inter radio.

The gunman, who was being monitored for religious extremism, is “known for a number of criminal offences (...) but has never been linked to terrorist offences,” he said.
