Haunted by price decline

Sales of the plantation commodities, in this regard the clove product, will be getting better in 2012. Oriented in the domestic market, the clove commodities are still promising compared to the export market.

In 2012, there would be a possibility if the price of cloves moved to the range of ,'5 ,'5 SHU NJ According to him, condition of the clove price in 2012 apparently tended

to decline, but when viewed from the farmer’s production costs then the price range was still providing a SUR¿W IRU WKH EXVLQHVVHV RI FORYH LQ the coming year. ³7KH FORYH SULFH UDQJH RI ,'5 WR ,'5 SHU NJ IRU WKH period of peak harvest season in the coming year is still arguably high enough. However, it is not better than the current price,� he explained.

He acknowledged that clove posed a plantation commodity oriented in the local market, primarily intended to meet the needs of cigarette factory in the country.

According to Sandiyasa, the clove trade remained good nationally. Its

selling price was also quite good even leading to an increase. It happened so due to decline in the local production and it was not followed by harvest in several existing production centers so far.

Under these conditions, Sandiyasa said, the clove trading in 2012 was projected to be better. In other words, the local clove production would increase from the previous year. Moreover, the support of weather conditions within the past few months would help the growth of clove. Similarly, the market absorption among the cigarette manufacturers also looked passionate against the local production. (bit)

PANAMA CITY, Panama — Former military strongman Manuel Antonio Noriega was flown home to Panama on Sunday to be punished once again for crimes he committed during a career that saw him transformed from a close Cold War ally of Washington to the vilified target of a U.S. invasion.

Noriega left Orly airport, south of Paris, on a flight operated by Spain’s Iberia airlines. He was delivered directly to the aircraft by a four-car convoy and motorcycles that escorted him from the French capital’s La Sante prison. The French Justice Ministry, in a one-line statement, said France turned Noriega over to Panamanian officials on Sunday in accordance with extradition proceedings. It was the only official remark.

Noriega’s return comes after more than 20 years in U.S. and French prisons for drug trafficking and money laundering. Panama convicted him during his captivity overseas for the slayings of two political opponents in the 1980s.

He was sentenced to 20 years in each case, and Panamanian officials say he will be sent straight to a jail cell when he lands. The ex-general, whose pockmarked face earned him the nickname “Pineapple Face,” could eventually leave prison under a law allowing prisoners over 70 to serve out their time under house arrest. A doctor was reported to be among the team of Panamanian officials escorting the 77-year-old ex-dictator back to Panama.

MOSCOW - President Dmitry Medvedev ordered an investigation on Sunday into allegations of fraud in Russia’s parliamentary election, one day after tens of thousands of protesters demanded it be annulled and rerun. Medvedev responded on his Facebook site to the protesters’ complaints that the December 4 election, won by Prime Minister Vladimir Putin’s United Russia, was slanted in its favor.

But he did not mention their calls for an end to Putin’s rule and received one insult after another on his Facebook site from people who made clear his reply was insufficient.

“I do not agree with any slogans or statements made at the rallies.

Nevertheless, instructions have been given by me to check all informa-

tion from polling stations regarding compliance with the legislation on elections,” Medvedev said in a post on the social media site.

His statement was a sign that the Russian leadership feels under pressure after the biggest opposition protests since Putin rose to power in 1999. The protesters themselves used social media to organize their

rallies. But the protesters have demanded much more than just an investigation and are unlikely to be satisfied.

They want a rerun of the election, the sacking of Central Election Commission chief Vladimir Churov, the registration of opposition parties and the release of people they define as political prisoners.

JERUSALEM - Israel blamed the Palestinians Sunday for rejecting a call to hold face-to-face peace talks when representatives of Middle East power brokers visit the region later this week.

Mark Regev, a spokesman for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, said Israel had renewed an offer to hold direct talks with the Palestinians ahead of Wednesday’s visit by envoys of the so-called Quartet of the European Union, United States, Russia and the United Nations.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

JAKARTA - Indonesia’s commodity-rich Sumatra and Kalimantan regions are among areas at high risk of flooding in December, the state weather agency said on Monday.

The agency said the country’s rainy season is expected to peak in December and January.

The rainy season can impact output in Indonesia’s agricultural and mineral sectors. A prolonged wet season last year hurt crops

such as coffee and flooded coal mines.

“Parts of Indonesia has begun their rainy season in November (and) most of Indonesia’s territory may have normal rain,” said Sri Woro Hariyono, head of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency. “At coastal areas, there are higher potential for flood when sea water enters coastal areas.

“There are 21 provinces with flood potential, of which 16 provinces have high flood potential.”

In recent weeks, many Indonesian palm oil producers have said that while the wet weather has arrived on plantations, there has been no flooding and rains are not comparable with last year.

Australia’s weather bureau said last week that La Nina, a weather phenomenon usually linked to heavy rains and flooding in the Asia-Pacific and South America and drought in Africa, has strengthened, adding that the condition will persist until the end of the Southern Hemisphere summer.

Indonesia is only catching up with other countries in the regulation of trade in response to the surge of imports brought about by low tariffs and a booming economy, he told the Wall Street Journal in an interview.

“My posture is not protectionist,” Wirjawan was quoted as saying.

“The fact is that there are thousands of products out there that are not in compliance with the rules and regulations in terms of environmental concerns, safety measures and labelling,” he added.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in October appointed Wirjawan as the new trade minister in a cabinet reshuffle which Yudhoyono said was “to improve the performance and effectiveness of the cabinet”.

The respected former investment banker replaced Mari Elka Pangestu, one of the country’s most high-profile ministers who is widely seen as supportive of liberal and free-trade policies.

Wirjawan has already sparked concern in business and diplomatic circles by limiting rattan exports meant to help the struggling local furniture industry and unveiling plans for tighter safety and label-

ling requirements on imports, the report said. The government is in the process of identifying which types of imports would require tighter regulations, including mangoes, potatoes, steel, toys and used clothing, it added.

Wirjawan, the outgoing chairman of Indonesia’s Investment Coordinating Board, maintained he only wanted to ensure Indonesian businesses were shielded from unfair competition and were spurred to make better quality goods.

“We need to climb up the value chain and make sure that we are able to produce goods and services.

Hopefully we won’t just produce Nike shoes; hopefully someday we can make iPads,” he said.

Indonesia’s economy is Southeast Asia’s biggest and among the fastest-growing in the world, with rich reserves of natural resources and a thriving domestic market of 240 million people.

The central bank last week predicted a 6.5 percent economic expansion for the fourth quarter and an annual expansion of 6.5 percent by the year end.

The government has estimated that exports will be worth $200 billion by the end of the year.

When Indonesia’s longest suspension bridge suddenly collapsed last month, killing more than 20 people, allegations immediately surfaced that corruption was behind the disaster.

Police have come up with little explanation as to why the 720-metrelong (2,400-foot-long) structure on Borneo island -- built just 10 years ago to resemble San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge -- gave way, sending dozens of vehicles into the river.

But they are investigating accusations by the country’s corruptionfighting commission and others that the materials used were of poorer quality and cheaper than the construc-

tion company claimed.

“The bridge collapse is one example of how quality is being compromised by corruption, where A-grade materials are substituted with lowergrade ones. That’s very dangerous,” Indonesian Chamber of Commerce chairman Suryo Bambang Sulisto told AFP. “It’s common for corruption to happen at all stages in Indonesian infrastructure projects, whether it’s during the tender process or extortion along the way.”

After the incident, parliament called for an audit of every major bridge in the country, in which East Java province alone found nine on the brink of buckling.

As developed countries remain in the economic doldrums, overseas investors have taken a keen interest in Indonesia, with foreign direct investment expected to top $20 billion by the year end.

A wealth of natural resources and a burgeoning middle class that fuels Indonesia’s economic expansion, forecast to reach 6.5 percent this year, make the country an attractive prospect.

But investors consistently cite corruption as a major deterrent and bemoan the lack of reliable infrastructure, with companies often forced to build their own roads, bridges, railways and ports to do business in the sprawling archipelago of 17,000

islands.

Indonesia’s 2011-2025 development plan calls for around $440 billion of investment in highways, harbours and power plants, and to tackle crippling traffic in major cities.

London-based risk consultancy Business Monitor International (BMI) says high levels of corruption have “severely impeded investment in the country?s infrastructure from nonpublic sources”.

“Although the Indonesian government is working hard to attract private investors, there is still an underlying threat of corruption and a lack of transparency in the tendering process,” a BMI report said.

A World Bank analysis found cor-

ruption could add up to 20 percent to the existing costs of projects in Indonesia.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has won two elections on promises to tackle graft in one of the most corrupt countries in Asia, but critics say he has failed to make any genuine difference to the culture of graft and impunity.

A Gallup poll released in October found that 91 percent of Indonesians believe corruption in government is widespread, compared to 84 percent in 2006.

At a function to mark International Anti-Corruption Day on Friday, Yudhoyono called for action and told law enforcers to go after the big fish.

Later, Lord Shiva had another son named Lord Kumara, who was also born on Tumpek Wayang. In accordance with the grace of Lord Shiva, Lord Kala was entitled to prey on Kumara. However, on the request of Lord Shiva, Lord Kala may prey on Kumara if this younger brother had grown up.

As a matter of fact, Lord Shiva was unwilling if his son would be

Balinese Culture Petulu Customary Village

GIANYAR - Petulu Customary Village, Ubud, Gianyar, has a tourism potential that is not less unique than a number of other villages in Bali, especially in Gianyar. Petulu Village inhabited by 350 villagers has become a tourism village offering the uniqueness of egrets. The village has long been a peaceful habitat for thousands of egrets perching and making the trees growing along the village road of Petulu as their convenient and timeless home.

According to the Head of Petulu Customary Village, I Wayan Beneh, the village consisted of two hamlets, namely Petulu Gunung and Petulu esa. In preserving the habitat of egrets, Petulu Village prohibited its residents and people from outside the village to destroy or shoot those white birds at the village. Prohibition and penalties were set forth in the awig-awig or regulation of Petulu Customary Village. “Up to these days, the regulation remains to be maintained and obeyed by villagers,� he explained.

Preservation of the egrets was also carried out ritually. According to the belief of local residents, the birds living at their village were the gift from God. Then, to maintain harmonious relations among

the people, to the environment and those egrets, local villagers also organized a ritual for Ratu Kokokan or eity of Egret. The ritual was held every Kuningan festivity. Residents delivered the offerings to the abode of eity of Egret as an expression of gratitude for the prosperity of the village since the presence of egrets less than half a century ago. The tradition had been implemented by customary villagers on regular basis. It had relations to the coexistence of egrets with villagers of Petulu Gunung that had a sociohistorical value.

The existence of egrets at Petulu Village had been known since 1965. ,QLWLDOO\ WKHUH ZHUH RQO\ ÂżYH ELUGV coming to the trees at local village.

At that time, the Petulu residents solely relied on their income from farming and coffee farm laborers LQ %XOHOHQJ 7KHLU VHQLRU ÂżJXUHV wanted to improve their standard of living by means of organizing rituals, namely through the implementation of balik sumpah, ngusaba nini, ngusaba desa and ngenteg linggih.

Exactly eleven days after carrying out the rituals, came a swarm of egrets and perched in front of people’s house compound. Since the birds came after the residents carried out the rituals, pursuant to local belief, they were then asking

guidance to a medium. From the effort, it was said the presence of those birds was the grace of deities, he explained.

As consequence, at the beginning of August, the birds would be very crowded. Then, after the end of August they would be leave Petulu for honeymoon period. TUM BEBEK (Minced Duck In Banana Leaf) OVERVIEW: Tum, leaf-wrapped bundles of highly seasoned food, are made with almost any basic ingredient in Bali, ranging from eels, to chicken, pork, beef or duck.

INGREDIENTS : 600 gr boneless duck, skin removed and minced 1 tbsp fried shallots 1 tbsp fried garlic 1/3 cup coconut milk, thick 3 tbsp basic spice paste 4 bird’s-eye chilies, sliced 1 tbsp salt 1 tsp black peppercorns, crushed 12 pieces banana leaf, cut in 20 cm (8 in) squares 12 ea salam leaves

PREPARATION: Combine the above ingredients except for banana leaf and mix well. Fold a heaped tablespoon of the mixture into the center of a banana leaf and wrap.

Steam parcels for about 15 minutes, until well cooked.

If banana leaf, use greaseproof paper in preference to aluminum foil.

The above mixture can also be used for duck satays; simply add 200g of grated coconut and double the quantity of the basic spice paste salt and pepper. Spear 2 heaped tablespoons of the paste around a large satay skewer or stalk of lemon grass.

Michael Jackson fans leave tribute at auction site Associated Press Writer

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — Karen Jackson and Kiki Stafford were moved to tears as they walked among the items that surrounded Michael Jackson in his final days: The Victorian baby grand piano, the wooden armoire where Jackson had written a note to himself on the mirror, the kitchen chalkboard where his children inscribed the message, “I love daddy.”

Jackson, 57, and Stafford, 47, were among dozens of Michael Jackson fans who got an early look at items that will be sold at auction from the singer’s final home — and left behind tributes to the King of Pop. Julien’s Auctions announced last month that it would sell the contents of the sprawling home where the singer died in 2009. On Sunday, the company invited Jackson fans to preview its exhibit of the home’s art and furnishings before it opens to the public Monday. Fans were also invited to leave pictures, cards, flowers, notes and other handmade trinkets that will be delivered to the Jackson family.

“This means a lot, because we don’t have a place to go” to leave things for the family, said Christine Tucker, spokeswoman for the Official Michael Jackson Fans of Southern California.

About 25 members of the fan club spent the weekend making and delivering glitter-covered cards and handmade Christmas ornaments for the tribute at Julien’s Auctions. “He inspires us to create. We make these beautiful things and we want his kids and his mom to see it,” she said.

Karen Jackson stayed up all night working on her creation: A charm-covered chain anchored by a metal “M’’ that includes tiny photos of Prince, Paris and Blanket. “I’ve been working on this for a year,” she said. “I hadn’t finished it because I didn’t know how to get it to them.”

Darren Julien, president of Julien’s Auctions, said he sought permission from the Jackson estate to include fans in the auction exhibit, and family matriarch Katherine Jackson requested that he deliver any handmade items from fans to her.

Australian scientists on Thursday hailed the discovery of a pair of insect-like eyes belonging to a freakish prehistoric super-predator which trawled the seas more than 500 million years ago. And it’s certainly not the sneaky, selďŹ sh rap that goes with calling someone a dirty rat.

In repeated tests, rats freed another trapped rat in their cage, even when yummy chocolate served as a tempting distraction. Twenty-three of the 30 rats opened the trap by pushing in a door. “Basically they told us (freeing another rat) is as important as eating chocolate,� said study author Peggy Mason of the University of Chicago. “That’s a very striking thing.�

In some cases, the rats first took the chocolate chips out of a container, but didn’t eat them, then freed the other rat and shared “almost as if they were serving them chocolate,� Mason said. The research is reported in Thursday’s journal Science.

Also, females showed more consistent empathy than males, Mason said. All six females freed their trapped partner; 17 of the 24 males did so. This conďŹ rms other studies that show females demonstrating more pro-social behavior than males, she said.

The Dallas Mavericks have signed forward Lamar Odom from the Los Angeles Lakers, the reigning NBA champions said on Sunday. The prospect of trading the two-time NBA champion had been criticized

9HWWHO IRFXVHG RQ PDNLQJ HYHQ EHWWHU Sebastian Vettel says he is already moving on from his ultra-successful 2011 Formula 1 season and keen to ensure he and Red Bull Racing can be even better in 2012. The German wrapped up this year’s world championship with a 122-point cushion, having taken 11 race victories and 15 poles.

But as he celebrated the achievement in Red Bull’s Home Run event in Milton Keynes this weekend, Vettel said he was starting to put 2011 in the past and focus on next year’s car. “We had a fantastic season. It takes some time to realise how special it was,” he said. “It has been phenomenal. It will be a season that we will look back on and always be very proud of.

“These kinds of seasons don’t happen every year but we’re already focused on next season. Adrian [Newey] and the guys are working hard to get the car ready for next year and we move on.” Vettel admitted it would be hard to improve on 2011, but was sure Red Bull would be able to take another step forward.

“You have to say that this year was pretty smooth maybe faultless because we had no issues with reliability, except for Brazil but we were still able to finish the race in second place,” he said. “Other than that, nothing went wrong from a car point of view. The retirements we had were Mark [Webber]’s crash in Monza and the puncture I suffered in Abu Dhabi, but car wise and engine wise it was better than expected.

“Everything is built on the limit, we’re pushing in every

area and sometimes things might break but this year everything was working fine. The target is to keep that up. Next year the cars will be slightly different, not a revolution but the regulations have changed a bit again so we have to adapt and at the moment we are pushing very hard to finalise the car.

Then at the beginning of next year we try to put it together, put it on the track and see how it works.

“Hopefully it will be quite reliable from the start but the most important thing is that the car is fast. It’s easier to make a fast car reliable then make a reliable car fast.” He also underlined that all the success he had achieved so far was not diminishing his motivation to keep pushing for more race wins and titles.

“Professionally, the last couple of years have been very successful but we tend to look forward,” Vettel said. “I don’t think anyone is lacking motivation so we don’t have to ask ourselves what we are doing because we have already achieved so much.

“Being 24, it would be sad to say that has been the highlight of my life and from now on it only gets worse!

Even if I retire one day I will still wake up in the morning and think that my best day is still to come.”

Hamilton endured a challenging 2011 campaign, where issues in his personal life, and a number of incidents on the track, left him outclassed by McLaren team-mate Jenson Button. Reflecting on the season just gone, Ecclestone believes part of the problem is that Hamilton’s decision to join forces with Simon Fuller’s XIX Management company - which looks after the likes of David and Victoria Beckham, Jennifer Lopez, Will Young and Andy Murray - has exposed him to influences that have not helped his performance.

“I think he had some personal problems during the year which affected him quite a lot,” said Ecclestone in an interview with the Guardian. “A lot to do with these things, it depends an awful lot on the people you surround yourself with, and who are in a position to influence you.

“I think he just fell into a lot of people that I think weren’t good for him. When his dad was looking after him, his dad was a bit more ... obviously it didn’t suit

Lewis, which was why they split; I think he didn’t appreciate how much help his dad was.”

He added: “I think it’s a disaster.

He gets to meet people that probably he wouldn’t have met, and [who] have probably the wrong sort of influence on him. He’s at the age, perhaps, and he has the amount of money, where when he’s influenced, he can carry things through, which he wouldn’t normally have done.”

Ecclestone was particularly unhappy with the infamous Ice-T McLaren garage video at the Canadian Grand Prix. The rapper swore heavily during the footage of him walking around the car, and mocked the fact that a steering wheel costs more than a lot of fans’ homes. The video became a cult hit on YouTube and earned McLaren a letter of complaint from Ecclestone.

“It’s our fault, because we tend to encourage celebrities,” Ecclestone said about the incident. “It’s good. Not so much for those of us who get our hands dirty but for all the sponsors who turn up with their guests and like to say: ‘Oh, we saw whoever-it-was.’

“They forget they’ve come to watch Formula 1. The difference is that we can handle them, because we’re not directly involved. He [Hamilton] sees somebody like that, he admires the guy, so he’ll start copying a little bit what they’re up to.”
