LOS ANGELES - Universal Pictures saw plenty of green over the weekend as its remake of “The Grinch” pulled in an impressive $66 million in North American theaters, industry tracker Exhibitor Relations reported Sunday.

The three-day estimate put the ever-popular Dr. Seuss tale -- with Benedict Cumberbatch voicing the small-hearted, ill-tempered, kid-hating title character -- well ahead of last week’s No. 1 film, “Bohemian Rhapsody,” which slid to second place with a still-healthy take of $30.9 million.

It also put this “Grinch” comfortably ahead of the Ron Howard-directed 2000 version, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” which took in $55 million in its opening weekend.

The new film also features the voices of Rashida Jones, Kenan Thompson and Angela Lansbury, with Pharrell Williams narrating.

“Bohemian Rhapsody,” with Rami Malek playing Queen lead singer Freddie Mercury, has drawn mixed reviews but has proved a foot-stomping audience favorite. The Fox production has taken $100 million domestically in its first two weeks and $110 million overseas.

In third place, at $10.1 million, was Paramount’s new release “Overlord,” a supernatural horror film set against a backdrop of the D-Day invasion. It stars Jovan Adepo and Wyatt Russell.

Another seasonal film, Disney’s “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms,” placed fourth, at $9.6 million. It stars Mackenzie Foy as a young girl who travels to a magic land in search of a key to unlock a gift from her late mother. Keira Knightley, Helen Mirren and Morgan Freeman also star.

Fifth spot went to new Sony release “The Girl in the Spider’s Web,” which took in what analysts called a disappointing $8 million.

Guitarist Joe Perry recovering after collapsing at NY concert NEW YORK - Famed Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry was recovering in hospital Sunday after collapsing shortly after performing with rock superstar Billy Joel in New York’s Madison Square Garden.

Perry, who is 68, suffered “shortness of breath and was treated backstage by paramedics who gave the guitarist oxygen and used a tracheal tube to clear his airway,” said a statement from a spokesman.

It said he was “alert and responsive” on Sunday, but would have to cancel an appearance later in the day at a rock ‘n’ roll fantasy camp in Florida.

“Perry is expected to return to the road later this month,” the statement said.

Perry was playing hit song “Walk This Way,” penned by him and Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and later covered by hip-hop group Run-DMC, shortly before he collapsed in his dressing room, TMZ reported.

Perry, who has been inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and, with Aerosmith, into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, is ranked by Rolling Stone as one of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time. (afp)

Small team leads harrowing search for California fire victims

A small team searching for victims of one of California’s deadliest fires happen upon a man lying face down between two ash-covered pickup trucks. His body and clothes seem intact, aside from hideous burns around his calves.

“You never get used to it. You have to face reality,” says one of a trio of sheriff deputies searching for the dead in the wreckage around the town of Paradise. “Everybody has its own way to cope with it,” he mused. “Mine? Better leave that unanswered.”

The “Camp Fire” in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains north of the state capital Sacramento has claimed 29 lives, razed 6,400 buildings and effectively wiped Paradise off the map.

For the past days, this team -- one deputy from Butte County and two from neighboring Yuba County -- has scoured the town

and the many nearby communities nestled in this hilly area searching for human remains.

On Sunday the team drove several miles up a steep rocky road keeping an eye out for possible victims. They refused to give their names and had little to say as they focused on their macabre task.

Did he live at the nearby farm, of which nothing survived except for scorched marijuana plants inside the charred shell of a greenhouse?

“Far too early to tell” said one of the Yuba County deputies.

- Abandoned vehicles The deputies took pictures, noted GPS coordinates, and picked up documents inside the cars in hopes

of eventually making an identification. They lifted the corpse, placed it in a body bag, and loaded it into a hearse that had followed them from Paradise.

Without wasting time they resumed their search for fire victims.

Dozens of cars and trucks, some seemingly intact, litter the sides of roads in the area. The deputies check each one for victims.

Inside the shell of one torched vehicle that had slammed into a tree they find a ball of burnt flesh the size of a small child.

A deputy carefully removes it and places the remains on a white tarp for careful examination. “No skull. It’s an animal!” he cries out after several minutes. The deputy wipes his hands and a brief smile crosses his face. “We’re moving

on,” he says.

The team continues on the meandering road and eventually reach an abandoned farm, where ducks, geese and goats roam freely.

Chaotic OTT at customary village

MMDP Klungkung to summon all customary village chiefs

SEMARAPURA —Concerns of the customary village authorities over the Red Handed Operation (OTT) by law enforcement officers regarding the management of tourist objects are increasingly widespread. This happens because lately more and more individuals of tourist object management are arrested by police. Seeing this situation, Customary Village Middle Assembly (MMDP) of Klungkung will summon the chief of customary village across Klungkung to provide an explanation of this situation.

Chairman of the MMDP Klungkung, Ketut Rupia Arsana, stated on Sunday (Nov. 11) that he did not know much about the red handed operation intensified by the illegal levy eradication taskforce (Saber Pungli). He did not dare to give further explanation whether to advise temporary suspension all the tourist management fees collected by customary villages or other appeals. “We will coordinate first with the regional government, especially with the regent and the culture agency,” said Rupia Arsana.

On the other hand, Deputy Chairperson of the Klungkung House of Representatives, I Wayan Buda Parwata, when asked about this issue claimed to be quite surprised. The rules of the game are clear where the assets belong to customary villages. Based on the results of the customary meeting, there is ticket issued as levy

evidence. He hoped the regional government, in this case the regent, can sit together with district leadership council (Forkompinda) to discuss about this matter to find the right formulation.

Thus, customary villages are safe in carrying out their policies below.

This Hanura politician admitted that he very much supports if there is a customary meeting decision set forth in the awig-awig in managing the tourism objects and safeguarding the assets owned. By this way, the customary village managing can maintain the temple sanctity in the area of the tourist attraction. The impact is clear as stated by the maxim ‘people will no longer become spectators in his hometown.’ Other than being able to make it more organized and orderly, there is no longer impression of dirty.

“With the role of customary village in empowering residents, customary villages in

empowering their regional potential and assets can help people’s economy to the low level of community,” said this Timuhun politician.

All this time, traditional villages having tourism potential can form and implement strong economic foundations by relying on economic players from the lower level with the support from stakeholders in Klungkung district. Similarly, this can give a view to tourism players entering the area of customary villages towards the changing of international tourism trends leading to quality tourism. This concept also directly grows tourism potentials and opportunities for economic multiplier effects in the local economic sector.

“This can prevent and minimize negative impacts of the tourism sector by providing the widest opportunity for customary villages to implement their customary awig-awig (bylaw) policies,” he said while adding the results are also for local customary interests such as repairing shrines or temples, and even alleviating residents in large ceremonies, such as mass or religious ceremonies.

On the other hand, Regent of Klungkung, Nyoman Suwirta, when asked for his response to this matter could not comment much. “We will discuss it further,” said Regent Suwirta. (kmb31)

Chief of Klungkung Police welcomed with gate sword tradition SEMARAPURA —Chief of Klungkung Police is now officially replaced. The baton was handed over by Chief of Bali Police, Petrus Reinhard Golose, in the Bali Police and district police main official position handover in the ranks of Bali Police in the Perkasa Raga Garwita Building, recently.

The old officer Bambang Tertianto was replaced by new officer I Komang Sudana.

After the handover, the new police chief was immediately greeted by the tradition of sword gate.

The farewell-welcome event of the old and new officials of the Klungkung Police was held last Saturday (Nov. 10). When arriving at the courtyard of the Klungkung Police headquarters, the old official Bambang Tertianto welcomed I Komang Sudana, with flower garland and bouquet. After that, it was followed by a procession of sword gate by the first officers with the rank of second and first police inspector led by the commander of the sword gate Nengah Simpen.

The sword gate tradition at welcoming to new officials like the district police chief has the meaning of how other officers will always be loyal to cover and guard their new leaders during the execution of the tasks. Similarly, the tradition of gate sword in releasing the chief in the form of circular gate sword has

the meaning of protecting and escorting the old leadership having been over.

After entering the sword gate, I Komang Sudana, along with Chairperson of Bhayangkari (spouse of police corps) accompanied by Deputy Chief of Klungkung Police, Adnan Pandibu, were welcomed by the Functional Section Heads and subdistrict police chief along with their troops and all Klungkung police officers. Their new leadership was greeted by the welcoming speech of the Klungkung police chief getting to enter the office of the police chief.

“Please cooperate with all parties. I am ready to continue what Mr. Bambang has been done,” said the police chief originating from Tulang Nyuh, Klungkung, who previously served in the Head of the Sub-Directorate III of Bali Police General Criminal Investigation Unit.

Furthermore, Komang Sudana headed to the Rupatama Room of the Klungkung Police to follow the unit report as well as the farewell of Bambang Tertianto through an umbrella gate procession. Bambang expressed his gratitude to his staff after leading quite well in Klungkung region for 1.5 years.

National Unity Day of India 143rd Birth Anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel

The Consulate General of India, Bali organized a function to celebrate National Unity Day, commemorating the 143rd Anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on Wednesday, 31st October 2018.

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was born in October 31, 1875 in Nadiad, Gujarat. Inspired by the work and philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi, he joined India’s struggle for independence. He organised peasants of Kheda, Bardoli and other parts of Gujarat and launched non-violent Civil Disobedience Movement in Gujarat, against the payment of raised tax, levied by the British government, leading to the British Government suspending the payment of revenue for that year.

His leadership qualities led him to becoming the President of the Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee in 1920 and he continued to serve as served in the post till 1945.

He was a strong supporter of the Non -Cooperation Movement of Gandhiji and worked against alcoholism, untouchability and caste discrimination in Gujarat. When Mahatma Gandhi was in prison, he led the Satyagraha movement in Nagpur in 1923 against the British law banning the raising of the Indian flag.

He was elected as the President of India National Congress in 1931. He was at the forefront of the Congress’ all India election campaign in 1934 and 1937 and

was a prominent leader in organising the Quit India Movement in 1942. He was arrested prior to the Quit India Movement and was released in 1945.

After India’s independence in 1947, he became the Deputy Prime Minister of India and India’s first Home Minister. He was the man behind the consolidation of 565 semi-autonomous princely states to form a united India. He passed away on 15 December 1950. He was a man of courage and determination and in the true sense, the ‘Iron Man of India’.

He was awarded India’s highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna, in 1991.

The participant was welcomed by The Consul General of India, Bali, Mr. R. O. Sunil Babu, who spoke about Sardar Patel’s single handed effort in integrating over 560 princely states and British administrative provinces into one single political entity that is India. He also informed the audience of the unveiling of a statue of Sardar Patel called the Statue of Unity on the Narmada River in Gujarat by the Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi on 31st October 2018. This statue is the world’s tallest statue at 182 metres.

On the same occasion, videos of Documentary Life of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was also shown to the audience. The gathering was closed by group photo session covering all consulate members and participants.

Bacteria that cause gonorrhea (Neisseria gonorrhoeae, illustrated) have developed resistance to numerous antibiotics over the years, rendering the drugs unable to kill the microbes.

A new drug may boost dwindling treatment options for gonorrhea

GONORRHEA is a wily foe. But doctors may soon have another drug to fight the sexually transmitted infection that’s become resistant to nearly every antibiotic thrown its way. In clinical trials, a new antibiotic was effective at stopping the bacteria that causes the disease.

A single oral dose of the drug, called zoliflodacin, cured 96 percent of people who had gonorrhea infections in the urinary and genital organs, researchers report in the Nov. 8 New England Journal of Medi-

cine. In comparison, 100 percent of patients given ceftriaxone — the remaining antibiotic that’s effective against the disease in the United States — were successfully treated.

Caused by Neisseria gonorrhoe-

ae, gonorrhea can be passed from an infected person to a sexual partner or from an infected mother to her baby at birth. The consequences of the infection are especially severe for women, who can develop pelvic inflammatory disease and become infertile, and for babies, who can lose their sight. The United States had more than half a million new gonorrhea cases reported in 2017, up about 75 percent from the historical

low point in 2009. Worldwide, an estimated 78 million new gonorrhea infections occur each year.

In the United States, doctors treat an infection with a combination of ceftriaxone and another antibiotic called azithromycin. But bacterial strains resistant to ceftriaxone have cropped up in other countries, raising concerns of untreatable gonorrhea.

N. gonorrhoeae needs to replicate its genetic material. In a Phase II clinical trial to determine the drug’s effectiveness, 141 participants were split into three groups. One set got ceftriaxone. Of the two groups given either a two-gram or three-gram dose of zoliflodacin, 55 of 57 and 54 of 56 people, respectively, were cured of infections. A larger, international clinical trial of the drug is underway. (IBP/net)

Marijuana may change the decision-making part of teen brains

SAN DIEGO — Marijuana use during teenage years may change the brain in key decision-making areas, a study in rats suggests.

“Adolescence is a dangerous time to be insulting the brain, particularly with drugs of abuse,” study coauthor Eliza Jacobs-Brichford said November 7 at the annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience.

Jacobs-Brichford and colleagues gave adolescent male and female rats a marijuana-like compound. Afterward, the researchers found changes in parts of the brain involved in making decisions.

Normally, many of the nerve cells there are surrounded by rigid structures called perineuronal nets, sturdy webs that help stabilize connections between nerve cells. But in male rats that had been exposed to the marijuana-like compound in adolescence, fewer of these nerve cells, which help put the brakes on other cells’ activity, were covered by nets. Drug exposure didn’t seem to affect the nets in female rats.

“Males look more susceptible to these drugs,” said JacobsBrichford, a behavioral neuroscientist at the University of Illinois at Chicago. (IBP/net) After exposure to a marijuana-like drug in adolescence, male rats had changes in structures that surround and help stabilize certain nerve cells.

Balinese women remain shy about doing health checkup

DENPASAR — Health problems experienced by women, especially Balinese women, are cervical cancer and breast cancer. The two diseases are number one and two killers in women.

On that account, an early examination must be carried out so that prevention efforts can be carried out more optimally.

Chairman of the Bali Motivator Team of the Family Welfare Development (PKK), Putu Putri Suastini Koster, stated that Balinese women do not check up their health early because they are embarrassed and lazy.

According to her, actually it should not be a problem because it will be detected faster if there is a disease. “It does not matter if we know about our disease early, we don’t have to panic. But calm down because we can treat it earlier or prevent it. Sometimes it is embarrassing because it is related to our femininity,” she said on Friday (Nov. 9) in the IVA test program and clinical breast examination on BaliTV. If women have been given explanation about the importance of early examination of cervical cancer and breast cancer, according to her, it will not become a

problem for women to examine themselves. “Those who can prevent the disease should be supported by the environment,” she said.

Besides, she has a regular program to conduct free IVA examinations and clinical breast examination. This PKK program is intended for women, considering that women are vulnerable to cancer, especially cervical cancer and breast cancer. “Lately, it is getting faster and faster,” he added.

She encountered more and more women that have cervical cancer. Unfortunately, the patients just want to do treatment after advanced stages. On that account, the PKK Bali seeks to foster public awareness, especially for women.

The first thing to do is to educate and provide understanding for the community, especially

women, so that they can be prevented by early detection. “When having suffered, do treatment immediately and don’t wait until the cancer gets worse. This is also the responsibility of the government as well and of course all components of society,” she affirmed.

Women must also care for their siblings or people suffering from disease or having cancer.

“At least, we are informing where we should get medical treatment,” she added.

The PKK will continue to oversee public health, especially women’s health. This activity is carried out at all levels of PKK management such as in the provincial and district/city level.

Similarly, the Health Agency also has an IVA test program synergized with the PKK. “We do it routinely throughout Bali,” she concluded. (kmb32)

Tabanan unable to meet corn demand

TABANAN - Tabanan has approximately 20,000 hectares of paddy fields or 25 percent of the area of paddy fields in Bali.

Though being extensive, Tabanan still cannot meet the needs of corn and remains dependent on outside regions such as Java, NTB and NTT. Division Head of the Tabanan Food Crop and Horticulture Production, Wayan Suandra, admitted on Sunday (Nov. 11) that corn production of Tabanan is still lacking and has not met domestic needs.

“In this case, it is the corn of old harvest. Actually, many farmers are widely growing sweet corn but it is harvested at the young age. So that it is not considered as corn production,” said Suandra.

On the other hand, corn is one of the commodities having become the government’s concern in the effort of food self-sufficiency program. Suandra continued that in general, the corn deficiency is not only in Tabanan but also Bali in general. Therefore, breeders in need of corn for their feed should purchase from outside Bali. Approximately, there are two to four trailer trucks of corn entering Tabanan each day. This amount is quite large and has the potential for farmers to meet the needs of corn.

Lack of farmers planting and harvesting corn until the old age or a maximum of three months after planting happens because the corn market is not very profitable.

“Indeed, the corn was formerly sold cheaply for around IDR 1,000 to IDR 1,200 per cob. So farmers are rather reluctant to cultivate

and harvest corn when it is old,” explained Suandra.

But today, the price of corn is more expensive. In the form of grain, it reached IDR 5,000 per kilogram and in the form of a cob reaching IDR 1,700 to IDR 2,000 per cob. The market is clear because corn is currently really sought after. “Anyone cultivating corn will be surely looked for by buyers because the current market is big,” said Suandra.

To encourage farmers to start planting corn and harvest it when they are old, Tabanan received an intercropping program from the central government covering 212 hectares. Farmers get seed assistance of 1.3 tons per hectare for corn and 3.6 tons per hectare for soybeans. The planting system is an intercropping system. With this system, farmers do not only harvest one type of crop but more than one, meaning the profits also increase.

Suandra added that intercropping system is very appropriate to be applied for agricultural land currently beginning to diminish due to land conversion so as to maximize the land use. For this intercropping program, farmers are targeted to produce 10 to 12 tons of corn and 8 to 10 tons of soybeans. (kmb24)

TOKYO - Akihiko Kondo’s mother refused an invitation to her only son’s wedding in Tokyo this month, but perhaps that isn’t such a surprise: he was marrying a hologram.

“For mother, it wasn’t something to celebrate,” said the soft-spoken 35-year-old, whose “bride” is a virtual reality singer named Hatsune Miku.

In fact, none of Kondo’s relatives attended his wedding to Miku -- an animated 16-yearold with saucer eyes and lengthy aquamarine pigtails -- but that didn’t stop him from spending two million yen ($17,600) on a formal ceremony at a Tokyo hall.

Around 40 guests watched as he tied the knot with Miku, present in the form of a cat-sized stuffed doll.

“I never cheated on her, I’ve always been in love with Miku-san,” he said, using a honorific that is commonly employed in Japan, even by friends.

“I’ve been thinking about her every day,” he told AFP a week after the wedding.

Since March, Kondo has been living with a moving, talking hologram of Miku that floats in a $2,800 desktop device.

“I’m in love with the whole concept of Hatsune Miku but I got married to the Miku of my house,” he said, looking at the blue image glowing in a capsule.

And Gatebox, the company that produces the hologram device featuring Miku, has issued a “marriage certificate”, which certifies that a human and a virtual character have wed “beyond dimensions”.

Kondo’s not alone either: he says Gatebox has issued more than 3,700 certificates for “cross-dimension” marriages and some people have sent him supportive messages.

“There must be some people who can’t come forward and say they want to hold a wedding. I want to give them a supportive push,” he says.

Kondo’s path to Miku came after difficult encounters with women as an anime-mad teenager.

“Girls would say ‘Drop dead, creepy otaku!’,” he recalled, using a Japanese term for geeks that can carry a negative connotation. As he got older, he says a woman at a previous workplace bullied him into a nervous breakdown and he became determined never to marry.

In Japan, that wouldn’t be entirely unusual nowadays. While in 1980, only one in 50 men had never married by the age of 50, that figure is now one in four.

But eventually Kondo realised he had been in love with Miku for more than a decade and decided to marry her. (afp)

The fruits reciprocate two tonnes of pine mushrooms sent by the North’s leader Kim Jong Un during his September summit with the South’s President Moon Jae-in, Seoul’s presidential office said.

The pine mushrooms -- a delicacy claimed to help prevent heart diseases and diabetes, and a key Northern export to China -- were distributed to Southern families separated from relatives in the North.

“Tangerines are a speciality of

the South that ordinary North Koreans normally don’t have access to,” Moon’s spokesman said Sunday.

His office did not elaborate on the fruits’ value but local media, citing local tangerine prices, estimated it at about 400 to 500 million won ($350,000-$440,000).

Opposition politicians were critical.

“This action runs counter to the current atmosphere of the international community,” Liberty Korea Party floor leader Song Hee-kyung said in a statement.

“South Koreans are sick and tired of such sentimental moves.”

Moon -- a dovish leader who advocates dialogue with the North to nudge it toward denuclearisation negotiations -- has met Kim three times so far and is seeking to hold another summit in Seoul in the near future.

Kim also gave Moon a pair of North Korean indigenous hunting

dogs after the September summit -- one of which gave birth to six puppies on Friday, according to the South Korean leader.

“The gift of two dogs now grew to six more dogs. It’s a good fortune for us,” Moon said on Facebook on Monday, adding: “I hope interKorea ties will also be like this.”

But the peace push has increasingly met with scepticism at home and abroad as denuclearisation talks between Pyongyang and Washington falter.

North Korea last week asked for a planned meeting between US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Kim’s right-hand man Kim Yong Chol to be delayed.

No clear explanation was given, but Pyongyang is demanding sanctions imposed on it over its weapons programmes are eased while the Washington insists that they should stay in place until the North denuclearises. (afp)

Wayang Lemah to Conquer the Times

Day puppet or wayang lemah performance is considered sacred and usually staged during the day and always associated with the execution of religious ceremony.

Puppet performance can only be staged by puppeteers who have undergone spiritual initiation through ceremony.

This puppet show is without using a screen and blencong oil lamp. In playing the puppet, the puppeteer leans the puppets on a white thread of about half to one meter tied to an erythrina wooden stick placed on a banana trunk on both sides of the puppeteer.

The gamelan accompaniment is a gender puppet with a five-tone scale. Puppet show of this ceremony is very dependent on the time of the implementation of the religious

ceremonies to be followed.

Supporting artists of this show are at least 3 to 5 people consisting of a puppeteer and one or two pairs of gender gamelan players.

As ritual arts, the day puppet show usually takes place around the venue of ceremony without using a special stage. The storyline is adapted to the ceremony performed. If the staging is performed in Deva Yadnya, the play will feature Kunti Yadnya, Marisuda Bumi and others. Meanwhile, at the bhuta yadnya ceremony, the play will feature Bima Dadi Caru and so do the other ceremonies. They must be adjusted to the type of ceremony taking place. LETICIA - Colombian President Ivan Duque is stressing the need for international action to halt Nicolas Maduro’s “dictatorship” in Venezuela, which he blames for a “massive humanitarian crisis” and a migration wave.

“The real cause of this migration shock is the dictatorship,” the right-wing leader told AFP. “We must use all the diplomatic mechanisms, all the multilateral mechanisms available to allow this dictatorship to end.”

During an official visit to France from November 11-13, Duque, who has been in power since August 7, will take part in Sunday’s Forum for Peace organized by French President Emmanuel Macron.

Prior to his departure he urged the need for countries worldwide to fight drug trafficking, in a wide-ranging interview with AFP that also touched on peace talks with Colombia’s last active guerrilla group and the election of an extreme-right leader in Brazil.

- ‘Shared struggle’ Duque accused Maduro -- leader of Venezuela, where economic woes began in 2014 with the crash in the price of crude -- of “clinging to power and exacerbating patriotic feelings in his favor.”

Maduro’s government has been slapped with a range of sanctions over its crackdown on the opposition and civil society critics.

The Colombian president said its neighbors “huge humanitarian crisis” is leaking over the border: “We have received nearly a million migrants in less than two years.”

“Colombia is facing a difficult situation,” he said, calling on the international community to help with “significant means to face this challenge.”

He echoed the need for international cooperation on the issue of drug trafficking: “All countries of the world must strengthen their policies to prevent consumption,” he said.”

“The fight against drugs must be a shared struggle.”

Illegal coca plantations in Colombia reached record levels last year following a 17 percent increase from 2016 to around 423,000 acres (171,000 hectares), according to the United Nations.

PARIS - Pneumonia will kill nearly 11 million children under five by 2030, experts warned Monday on a global day aimed at raising awareness of the biggest infectious killer of infants worldwide.

While in the developed world the severe lung infection mainly affects the elderly, in developing nations it is children who bear the brunt, with hundreds of thousands dying each year from the easily preventable disease.

More than 880,000 children -- mainly aged less than two years old -- died from pneumonia in 2016 alone.

A new analysis conducted by Johns Hopkins University and the aid group Save the Children using forecasts based on current trends showed more than 10,800,000 under-fives would succumb to the disease by the end of the next decade.

Furthermore, a handful of countries are set to carry the highest burdens, with 1.7 million children set to die in Nigeria and India,

700,000 in Pakistan and 635,000 in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Yet there is some good news.

The study, published on World Pneumonia Day, found that scaling up existing vaccination coverage, coupled with cheap antibiotics and ensuring good nutrition for children could save a total of 4.1 million lives.

Pneumonia, an inflammatory infection of the lungs that may be contracted via viral or bacteria infection, is treatable if caught early enough and the patient’s immune system isn’t compromised.

But worldwide it hits young children who are often weak through malnutrition, killing more infants each year than malaria, diarrhoea and measles combined.

“It beggars belief that close to a million children are dying every

year from a disease that we have the knowledge and resources to defeat,” said Save the Children CEO Kevin Watkins.

“There are no pink ribbons, global summits or marches for pneumonia. But anyone who cares about justice for children and their access to essential healthcare, this forgotten killer should be the defining cause of our age.”

Watkins’ group, which operates health programmes in some of the countries worst hit by the disease, called for prices of major existing pneumonia vaccines to be lowered “dramatically”.

2030 is the target date for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, which includes a pledge to “end preventable child deaths” by the end of the next decade. (afp)

Indonesia on Saturday called off the search for passengers of a Lion Air plane, almost two weeks after the jetliner plunged into the Java Sea killing 189 people on board. Some 196 bags containing body parts have been recovered from under the water with 79 victims identified and handed over to their families for burial.

“Since yesterday afternoon until today we have not found any more victims and therefore I declare the search and rescue operation is over,” Muhammad Syaugi, head of the search and rescue agency, told reporters Saturday.

“We apologise to the public, especially the families of victims if during the operation we were not able to satisfy everybody,” he added. Rescuers have also retrieved parts of the plane’s engines, wheels and seats from the sea.

One diver died helping with search.

Lion Air has begun paying $102,058

compensation money for each passenger to the grieving families.

Indonesian National Transportation Safety Committee has retrieved one of the black boxes -- the flight data recorder -- and is still hunting for the cockpit voice recorder, which recorded the last conversation between the pilot and co-pilot before the crash.

The doomed jet was a Boeing 737Max 8, one of the world’s newest and most advanced commercial passenger planes, and there is still no answer as to what caused the crash. The government has ordered a check on all Boe-

ing 737-Max 8 fleets and conducted a special audit on Lion Air management.

The transportation ministry has also removed several executives and technical staff from the airline to help with the accident investigation.

The Lion Air plane plunged into the Java Sea on October 29 minutes after takeoff from Jakarta to Pangkal Pinang city.

All 189 people on board were killed and the data from the flight recorder data has so far revealed the plane’s air speed indicator had not been working properly on its last four journeys, including on the fatal flight.

Following the fatal crash, Boeing issued a special bulletin on how to deal with the erroneous Angle of Attack sensor alert in 737-8 and -9 airplanes.(afp)

NEGARA - Unspoilt beauty lies at the west end of the fabled island of Bali: lush green forests, picturesque mountain range, crystal clear blue water, and vast stretches of pristine beaches, those are what await at the West Bali National Park. Home to over a hundred species of wildlife, the national park is best known as the sanctuary of the exotic white Bali Starling , an endemic iconic bird of the island of the gods.

Located in the most north-westerly point of Bali, the national park includes the whole area of the Prapat Agung Peninsula, and large swathes of land around the towns of Gilimanuk, Cekik and Banyuwedang which lie in the regencies of Jembrana and Buleleng. This national park is approximately 100Km from Bali’s capital city, Denpasar, or about 50 km west from the northern city of Singaraja, capital of Buleleng regency.

West Bali National Park has a total area of 19,002.89 hectares, covering 15,587.89 hectares of land and 3,415 hectares of water. The habitat is very varied with rainforests, dry savannas, acacia scrubs and lowland forests, as well as more montane forests in the higher region. There are also some pockets of dense mangrove forests.

In the north of the park is an obvious north jutting peninsula called Prapat

Agung. Around this peninsula are long stretches of protected beach and offshore coral reefs as well as a small offshore island called Menjangan .

The latter is a very popular diving destination.

One hundred and sixty species of birds have been recorded in the park, including the near extinct Bali Starling (Leucopsar rothschildi), Bali’s only endemic vertebrate species,the fauna icon of Bali. It was the key reason why this national park was created in 1941. By 2001, it was estimated that as few as only six individual starlings were thought to have survived in the wild, all of them in this park. Since then, captive breeding and re-introduction efforts have continued apace, but poaching pressures remain a large problem. With that in mind, a second

re-introduction program was started in the remote regions of Nusa Penida, off the coast of Sanur Beach in 2004.

In June 2011, West Bali National Park received 60 endangered Bali Starling for release, 40 from the Surabaya Zoo and 20 from Taman Safari Indonesia . Keen birdwatchers can find a checklist of likely species and their status here.

Among some other fauna found in the National park are: the Wild Bull ( Banteng), Barn Swallow, Blacknaped Oriole, Black Racket-tailed Treepie, Crested Serpent-eagle, Crested Treeswift, Dollarbird, Hawksbill Turtle, Indian Muntjac, Java Sparrow, Javan macaque (Lutung), Large Flying Fox, Leopard Cat, Lesser Adjutant, Long-tailed Shrike, Milky Stork, Pacific Swallow, Red-rumped Swallow, Menjangan Wild Deer,

Sacred Kingfisher, Savanna Nightjar, Stork-billed Kingfisher, Water Monitor, Wild Boar, Yellow-vented Bulbul, and many more.

The national park is also the home of several endangered species of flora such as: Pterospermum diversifolium, Antidesma bunius, Lagerstroemia speciosa, Steleochocarpus burahol, Santalum album, Aleuritas moluccana, Sterculia foetida, Schleichera oleosa, Dipterocarpus hasseltii, Garcinia dulcis, Alstonia scholaris, Manilkara kauki, Dalbergia latifolia and Cassia fistula.

The Marine reserve includes the cape shores and several sanctuary islands with many seabirds in the bay of Gilimanuk, on the island of Menjangan and the excellent coral reefs surrounding it. The good drop-offs on Menjangan’s south side are only surpassed by the particularly superb reefs on its northern shores. The island is a popular spot for locals and tourists wishing to dive for a variety of fish and coral reef exploration. There are no dangerous currents to contend with in this area.

West Bali Barat National Park also shows high bio-diversity in a relatively small marine area. At the end of the last century, 110 species of corals belonging to 18 families were recorded, of which 22 species

were of the mushroom coral family (there are only 29 species of mushroom corals recorded worldwide), and there were at least 27 species of Acropora coral found in a relatively small area of only 2 hectares.

Red Bull star Verstappen was seen on TV pushing Force India’s Ocon three times and accused of threatening to hit him, after the pair had collided on track.

The collision on lap 44 of the 71-lap race at Interlagos’ famed Senna S curves cost Verstappen the race and he had to settle for second place.

The livid Dutchman, 21, had earlier said he did not see the Frenchman in the paddock after the race, but made no effort to avoid him in the drivers’ weighing room where he walked straight at him.

“We were at the scales room,” said Ocon. “He wanted to punch me. He pushed me and he was wanting to be violent. It was not professional.”

Ocon added that his rivalry with Verstappen “goes back a few years” and said he “has always been the same”.

“I was behind Max for two laps,” Ocon told Sky Sports. “On the first lap, I was a lot faster and, on the second lap, I was a lot faster. The rules say you are allowed to un-lap yourself so that’s what I did.

“I’m used to the fights with Max. He’s always been the same. It goes back a few years.”

Verstappen swore so much

on team radio that his comments bleeped out after he described him as an “idiot”.

Ocon was given a 10-second stop-go penalty by the race stewards for causing the collision.

A video clip of the post-race incident went viral soon afterwards but Verstappen said he had no regrets.

- ‘I don’t care what people say’ “He came out of the pit lane and he had the right to overtake, but the level of risk he was taking, it was not right,” he explained.

“The stewards gave him a penalty. You can say, ‘Max, you should have given room’, but we were not racing and you don’t expect that.”

Asked about confronting and pushing Ocon, he said: “We are all passionate about the sport, but it would be odd if I shook his hand. I don’t care what people say.

“I’m a winner. To get taken out by that and to get a stupid response from their side, I was not happy about that.”

Verstappen told his team over the radio on the slowdown lap that he had better not bump into Ocon because there could be trouble.

POINTE-A-PITRE - French yachtsman Francis Joyon, 62, won the Route du Rhum transatlantic race in record time on Sunday, outpacing young competitor Francois Gabart in a nail-biting final lap around Guadeloupe’s main island.

Joyon sailed into Point-a-Pitre just before midnight to take victory in the single-handed race after seven days, 14 hours, 21 minutes and 47 seconds at sea.

The 35-year-old Gabart arrived seven minutes after Joyon, finishing second in the 11th edition of the daunting race dubbed “Formula One on water” due to the six next-generation, high-speed boats taking part.

“It was really an extraordinary race,” said Joyon, praising Gabart, whose boat was badly damaged by storms, as “highly brave and committed”.

Joyon beat the previous record set

by Frenchman Loick Peyron (Banque Populaire VII) in 2014 of seven days and 15 hours. It was his first victory in seven attempts.

All 123 challengers, half of them in small Class 40 boats, left Saint Malo in northwest France on November 4 for Guadeloupe, a French-governed archipelago in the Caribbean.

When Canadian Mike Birch won the inaugural Route du Rhum in Olympus in 1978, he completed the 3,542-mile (5,700 kilometres) course in 23 days and six hours.

Forty years on, Joyon’s Idec Sport and Gabart’s Macif were two of the vessels called Ultim -- maxi-trimarans which can speed across the waves at 85km/h (45 knots).

The other Ultim skippers included Armel Le Cleac’h, winner of the most recent solo round-the-world Vendee Globe, whose dreams of victory were scuppered when his vessel, Banque Populaire IX, capsized and had to be rescued by a fishing boat.

He was one of four challengers in the fastest Ultim category to drop out after Sebastien Josse, Thomas Coville and Romain Pilliard also hit difficulties, taking refuge in the Spanish port of La Coruna. (afp)

Forget the title, derby defeat leaves ‘We’re not robots’: Higuain misses penalty, sees red as Juve outclass AC Milan Man Utd fighting for top four

Manchester United can forget trying to challenge Manchester City until they can even compete for a place in the Premier League top four, Jose Mourinho confessed as his side were outclassed in a 3-1 derby defeat by the English champions on Sunday.

A fourth league loss of the season leaves United already 12 points adrift of their local rivals just 12 games into the new campaign. Of even more concern for Mourinho’s job prospects, the Red Devils are now also seven points adrift of the top four, putting Champions League qualification for next season at risk.

Indeed, eighth-placed United are now as close to Cardiff in the relegation zone as they are to City.

“We knew that there is a difference in potential (with City),” said Mourinho, whose side finished second in the Premier League last season, albeit

a record 19 points behind City’s 100-point tally.

“Since the beginning of the season, we knew that our second position last season was a fantastic achievement for us, and this season we are going to fight for the top four.” Yet Mourinho’s tune was very different on his last visit to the Etihad when United spoiled City’s chance to seal the title in the derby by coming from 2-0 down to win 3-2.

“The point is can we improve enough to catch them next season?” Mourinho said that day in April, but has only overseen a collapse in United’s ambitions since.

Barca suffer first league home defeat in two years, Real boost Solari hopes

Barcelona lost at home in La Liga for the first time in more than two years as Real Betis pulled off a stunning 4-3 victory on Sunday, despite Lionel Messi scoring twice on his return from injury.

Barca last endured a league defeat at the Camp Nou against Alaves in September 2016 but, following 42 games unbeaten, their run was ended by a brilliant, counter-attacking display from Betis.

Three hours later, Real Madrid were putting the finishing touches to a 4-2 win away at Celta Vigo, a result expected to earn Santiago Solari an extension to his tenure as coach. Real have now posted four consecutive victories since Solari was put in temporary charge while the gap behind Barca has been reduced to four points.

“He has done excellently,” Madrid club director Emilio Butragueno said afterwards. “We are very happy with how things have gone.” On his future, Solari said: “We’ll see. I don’t usually plan too far ahead but in principle, it´s my

day off tomorrow.”

Barca’s shock defeat came despite a return for Messi, whose two goals, one from the penalty spot and another deep into injury-time, proved little more than consolations.

“We don’t leave with the feeling Betis were the better team,” coach Ernesto Valverde said. “I don’t want to take any credit away from our opponent but we could have countered them better.”

Argentine Higuain had shrugged off a back injury to take on his former teammates after being loaned to AC Milan last summer to make space for the arrival of Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo.

But tensions boiled over as AC Milan struggled to find a way past the reigning seven-time champions.

Higuain was sent off after 83 minutes, two minutes after Ronaldo, the player who took his place in Turin on an 100-million-euro ($115m) deal, fired in his eighth league goal in 12 matches since arriving from Real Madrid.

Higuain saw red after screaming at referee Paolo Mazzoleni in protest at a yellow card for a foul on Medhi Benatia. “I know that we are an example for all children, for those who play football, for the

SAO PAULO - Dutch driver Max Verstappen was accused of trying to punch French rival Esteban Ocon after a controversial clash at Sunday’s Brazilian Grand Prix which was won by five-time world champion Lewis Hamilton.

There are also some pockets of dense mangrove forests.

In the north of the park is an obvious north jutting peninsula called Prapat

Agung. Around this peninsula are long stretches of protected beach and offshore coral reefs as well as a small offshore island called Menjangan .

The latter is a very popular diving destination.

One hundred and sixty species of birds have been recorded in the park, including the near extinct Bali Starling (Leucopsar rothschildi), Bali’s only endemic vertebrate species,the fauna icon of Bali. It was the key reason why this national park was created in 1941. By 2001, it was estimated that as few as only six individual starlings were thought to have survived in the wild, all of them in this park. Since then, captive breeding and re-introduction efforts have continued apace, but poaching pressures remain a large problem. With that in mind, a second

re-introduction program was started in the remote regions of Nusa Penida, off the coast of Sanur Beach in 2004.

In June 2011, West Bali National Park received 60 endangered Bali Starling for release, 40 from the Surabaya Zoo and 20 from Taman Safari Indonesia . Keen birdwatchers can find a checklist of likely species and their status here.

Among some other fauna found in the National park are: the Wild Bull ( Banteng), Barn Swallow, Blacknaped Oriole, Black Racket-tailed Treepie, Crested Serpent-eagle, Crested Treeswift, Dollarbird, Hawksbill Turtle, Indian Muntjac, Java Sparrow, Javan macaque (Lutung), Large Flying Fox, Leopard Cat, Lesser Adjutant, Long-tailed Shrike, Milky Stork, Pacific Swallow, Red-rumped Swallow, Menjangan Wild Deer,

Sacred Kingfisher, Savanna Nightjar, Stork-billed Kingfisher, Water Monitor, Wild Boar, Yellow-vented Bulbul, and many more.

The national park is also the home of several endangered species of flora such as: Pterospermum diversifolium, Antidesma bunius, Lagerstroemia speciosa, Steleochocarpus burahol, Santalum album, Aleuritas moluccana, Sterculia foetida, Schleichera oleosa, Dipterocarpus hasseltii, Garcinia dulcis, Alstonia scholaris, Manilkara kauki, Dalbergia latifolia and Cassia fistula.

The Marine reserve includes the cape shores and several sanctuary islands with many seabirds in the bay of Gilimanuk, on the island of Menjangan and the excellent coral reefs surrounding it. The good drop-offs on Menjangan’s south side are only surpassed by the particularly superb reefs on its northern shores. The island is a popular spot for locals and tourists wishing to dive for a variety of fish and coral reef exploration. There are no dangerous currents to contend with in this area.

West Bali Barat National Park also shows high bio-diversity in a relatively small marine area. At the end of the last century, 110 species of corals belonging to 18 families were recorded, of which 22 species

were of the mushroom coral family (there are only 29 species of mushroom corals recorded worldwide), and there were at least 27 species of Acropora coral found in a relatively small area of only 2 hectares.

The collision on lap 44 of the 71-lap race at Interlagos’ famed Senna S curves cost Verstappen the race and he had to settle for second place.

The livid Dutchman, 21, had earlier said he did not see the Frenchman in the paddock after the race, but made no effort to avoid him in the drivers’ weighing room where he walked straight at him.

“We were at the scales room,” said Ocon. “He wanted to punch me. He pushed me and he was wanting to be violent. It was not professional.”

Ocon added that his rivalry with Verstappen “goes back a few years” and said he “has always been the same”.

“I was behind Max for two laps,” Ocon told Sky Sports. “On the first lap, I was a lot faster and, on the second lap, I was a lot faster. The rules say you are allowed to un-lap yourself so that’s what I did.

“I’m used to the fights with Max. He’s always been the same. It goes back a few years.”

Verstappen swore so much

on team radio that his comments bleeped out after he described him as an “idiot”.

Ocon was given a 10-second stop-go penalty by the race stewards for causing the collision.

POINTE-A-PITRE - French yachtsman Francis Joyon, 62, won the Route du Rhum transatlantic race in record time on Sunday, outpacing young competitor Francois Gabart in a nail-biting final lap around Guadeloupe’s main island.

Joyon sailed into Point-a-Pitre just before midnight to take victory in the single-handed race after seven days, 14 hours, 21 minutes and 47 seconds at sea.

The 35-year-old Gabart arrived seven minutes after Joyon, finishing second in the 11th edition of the daunting race dubbed “Formula One on water” due to the six next-generation, high-speed boats taking part.

“It was really an extraordinary race,” said Joyon, praising Gabart, whose boat was badly damaged by storms, as “highly brave and committed”.

Joyon beat the previous record set

by Frenchman Loick Peyron (Banque Populaire VII) in 2014 of seven days and 15 hours. It was his first victory in seven attempts.

All 123 challengers, half of them in small Class 40 boats, left Saint Malo in northwest France on November 4 for Guadeloupe, a French-governed archipelago in the Caribbean.

When Canadian Mike Birch won the inaugural Route du Rhum in Olympus in 1978, he completed the 3,542-mile (5,700 kilometres) course in 23 days and six hours.

Forty years on, Joyon’s Idec Sport and Gabart’s Macif were two of the vessels called Ultim -- maxi-trimarans which can speed across the waves at 85km/h (45 knots).

The other Ultim skippers included Armel Le Cleac’h, winner of the most recent solo round-the-world Vendee Globe, whose dreams of victory were scuppered when his vessel, Banque Populaire IX, capsized and had to be rescued by a fishing boat.

LETICIA - Colombian President Ivan Duque is stressing the need for international action to halt Nicolas Maduro’s “dictatorship” in Venezuela, which he blames for a “massive humanitarian crisis” and a migration wave.

“The real cause of this migration shock is the dictatorship,” the right-wing leader told AFP. “We must use all the diplomatic mechanisms, all the multilateral mechanisms available to allow this dictatorship to end.”

During an official visit to France from November 11-13, Duque, who has been in power since August 7, will take part in Sunday’s Forum for Peace organized by French President Emmanuel Macron.

Prior to his departure he urged the need for countries worldwide to fight drug trafficking, in a wide-ranging interview with AFP that also touched on peace talks with Colombia’s last active guerrilla group and the election of an extreme-right leader in Brazil.

- ‘Shared struggle’ Duque accused Maduro -- leader of Venezuela, where economic woes began in 2014 with the crash in the price of crude -- of “clinging to power and exacerbating patriotic feelings in his favor.”

PARIS - Pneumonia will kill nearly 11 million children under five by 2030, experts warned Monday on a global day aimed at raising awareness of the biggest infectious killer of infants worldwide.

While in the developed world the severe lung infection mainly affects the elderly, in developing nations it is children who bear the brunt, with hundreds of thousands dying each year from the easily preventable disease.

More than 880,000 children -- mainly aged less than two years old -- died from pneumonia in 2016 alone.

A new analysis conducted by Johns Hopkins University and the aid group Save the Children using forecasts based on current trends showed more than 10,800,000 under-fives would succumb to the disease by the end of the next decade.

Furthermore, a handful of countries are set to carry the highest burdens, with 1.7 million children set to die in Nigeria and India,

700,000 in Pakistan and 635,000 in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Yet there is some good news.

The study, published on World Pneumonia Day, found that scaling up existing vaccination coverage, coupled with cheap antibiotics and ensuring good nutrition for children could save a total of 4.1 million lives.

Pneumonia, an inflammatory infection of the lungs that may be contracted via viral or bacteria infection, is treatable if caught early enough and the patient’s immune system isn’t compromised.

But worldwide it hits young children who are often weak through malnutrition, killing more infants each year than malaria, diarrhoea and measles combined.

“It beggars belief that close to a million children are dying every

year from a disease that we have the knowledge and resources to defeat,” said Save the Children CEO Kevin Watkins.

“There are no pink ribbons, global summits or marches for pneumonia. But anyone who cares about justice for children and their access to essential healthcare, this forgotten killer should be the defining cause of our age.”

Watkins’ group, which operates health programmes in some of the countries worst hit by the disease, called for prices of major existing pneumonia vaccines to be lowered “dramatically”.

2030 is the target date for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, which includes a pledge to “end preventable child deaths” by the end of the next decade. (afp)

Indonesia on Saturday called off the search for passengers of a Lion Air plane, almost two weeks after the jetliner plunged into the Java Sea killing 189 people on board. Some 196 bags containing body parts have been recovered from under the water with 79 victims identified and handed over to their families for burial.

“Since yesterday afternoon until today we have not found any more victims and therefore I declare the search and rescue operation is over,” Muhammad Syaugi, head of the search and rescue agency, told reporters Saturday.

“We apologise to the public, especially the families of victims if during the operation we were not able to satisfy everybody,” he added. Rescuers have also retrieved parts of the plane’s engines, wheels and seats from the sea.

Indonesian National Transportation Safety Committee has retrieved one of the black boxes -- the flight data recorder -- and is still hunting for the cockpit voice recorder, which recorded the last conversation between the pilot and co-pilot before the crash.

The doomed jet was a Boeing 737Max 8, one of the world’s newest and most advanced commercial passenger planes, and there is still no answer as to what caused the crash. The government has ordered a check on all Boe-

The transportation ministry has also removed several executives and technical staff from the airline to help with the accident investigation.

The Lion Air plane plunged into the Java Sea on October 29 minutes after takeoff from Jakarta to Pangkal Pinang city.

All 189 people on board were killed and the data from the flight recorder data has so far revealed the plane’s air speed indicator had not been working properly on its last four journeys, including on the fatal flight.

Supporting artists of this show are at least 3 to 5 people consisting of a puppeteer and one or two pairs of gender gamelan players.

As ritual arts, the day puppet show usually takes place around the venue of ceremony without using a special stage. The storyline is adapted to the ceremony performed. If the staging is performed in Deva Yadnya, the play will feature Kunti Yadnya, Marisuda Bumi and others. Meanwhile, at the bhuta yadnya ceremony, the play will feature Bima Dadi Caru and so do the other ceremonies. They must be adjusted to the type of ceremony taking place. Tabanan unable to meet corn demand

TABANAN - Tabanan has approximately 20,000 hectares of paddy fields or 25 percent of the area of paddy fields in Bali.

Though being extensive, Tabanan still cannot meet the needs of corn and remains dependent on outside regions such as Java, NTB and NTT. Division Head of the Tabanan Food Crop and Horticulture Production, Wayan Suandra, admitted on Sunday (Nov. 11) that corn production of Tabanan is still lacking and has not met domestic needs.

“In this case, it is the corn of old harvest. Actually, many farmers are widely growing sweet corn but it is harvested at the young age. So that it is not considered as corn production,” said Suandra.

On the other hand, corn is one of the commodities having become the government’s concern in the effort of food self-sufficiency program. Suandra continued that in general, the corn deficiency is not only in Tabanan but also Bali in general. Therefore, breeders in need of corn for their feed should purchase from outside Bali. Approximately, there are two to four trailer trucks of corn entering Tabanan each day. This amount is quite large and has the potential for farmers to meet the needs of corn.

Lack of farmers planting and harvesting corn until the old age or a maximum of three months after planting happens because the corn market is not very profitable.

“Indeed, the corn was formerly sold cheaply for around IDR 1,000 to IDR 1,200 per cob. So farmers are rather reluctant to cultivate

and harvest corn when it is old,” explained Suandra.

But today, the price of corn is more expensive. In the form of grain, it reached IDR 5,000 per kilogram and in the form of a cob reaching IDR 1,700 to IDR 2,000 per cob. The market is clear because corn is currently really sought after. “Anyone cultivating corn will be surely looked for by buyers because the current market is big,” said Suandra.

To encourage farmers to start planting corn and harvest it when they are old, Tabanan received an intercropping program from the central government covering 212 hectares. Farmers get seed assistance of 1.3 tons per hectare for corn and 3.6 tons per hectare for soybeans. The planting system is an intercropping system. With this system, farmers do not only harvest one type of crop but more than one, meaning the profits also increase.

Suandra added that intercropping system is very appropriate to be applied for agricultural land currently beginning to diminish due to land conversion so as to maximize the land use. For this intercropping program, farmers are targeted to produce 10 to 12 tons of corn and 8 to 10 tons of soybeans. (kmb24)

In fact, none of Kondo’s relatives attended his wedding to Miku -- an animated 16-yearold with saucer eyes and lengthy aquamarine pigtails -- but that didn’t stop him from spending two million yen ($17,600) on a formal ceremony at a Tokyo hall.

Around 40 guests watched as he tied the knot with Miku, present in the form of a cat-sized stuffed doll.

“I never cheated on her, I’ve always been in love with Miku-san,” he said, using a honorific that is commonly employed in Japan, even by friends.

“I’ve been thinking about her every day,” he told AFP a week after the wedding.

Since March, Kondo has been living with a moving, talking hologram of Miku that floats in a $2,800 desktop device.

“I’m in love with the whole concept of Hatsune Miku but I got married to the Miku of my house,” he said, looking at the blue image glowing in a capsule.

He even took his Miku doll to a jewellery shop to get the ring.

And Gatebox, the company that produces the hologram device featuring Miku, has issued a “marriage certificate”, which certifies that a human and a virtual character have wed “beyond dimensions”.

Kondo’s not alone either: he says Gatebox has issued more than 3,700 certificates for “cross-dimension” marriages and some people have sent him supportive messages.

“There must be some people who can’t come forward and say they want to hold a wedding. I want to give them a supportive push,” he says.

Kondo’s path to Miku came after difficult encounters with women as an anime-mad teenager.

“Girls would say ‘Drop dead, creepy otaku!’,” he recalled, using a Japanese term for geeks that can carry a negative connotation. As he got older, he says a woman at a previous workplace bullied him into a nervous breakdown and he became determined never to marry.

In Japan, that wouldn’t be entirely unusual nowadays. While in 1980, only one in 50 men had never married by the age of 50, that figure is now one in four.

But eventually Kondo realised he had been in love with Miku for more than a decade and decided to marry her. (afp)

Seoul is pushing ahead with a rapprochement with the nucleararmed North while its security ally the US insists pressure on Pyongyang should be maintained until it denuclearises.

The tangerines -- a rarity in the North -- were being airlifted to Pyongyang from the southern island of Jeju, where they were grown, in four flights, the last one due Monday afternoon.

The fruits reciprocate two tonnes of pine mushrooms sent by the North’s leader Kim Jong Un during his September summit with the South’s President Moon Jae-in, Seoul’s presidential office said.

The pine mushrooms -- a delicacy claimed to help prevent heart diseases and diabetes, and a key Northern export to China -- were distributed to Southern families separated from relatives in the North.

“Tangerines are a speciality of

the South that ordinary North Koreans normally don’t have access to,” Moon’s spokesman said Sunday.

His office did not elaborate on the fruits’ value but local media, citing local tangerine prices, estimated it at about 400 to 500 million won ($350,000-$440,000).

Opposition politicians were critical.

“This action runs counter to the current atmosphere of the international community,” Liberty Korea Party floor leader Song Hee-kyung said in a statement.

“South Koreans are sick and tired of such sentimental moves.”

Moon -- a dovish leader who advocates dialogue with the North to nudge it toward denuclearisation negotiations -- has met Kim three times so far and is seeking to hold another summit in Seoul in the near future.

Kim also gave Moon a pair of North Korean indigenous hunting

dogs after the September summit -- one of which gave birth to six puppies on Friday, according to the South Korean leader.

“The gift of two dogs now grew to six more dogs. It’s a good fortune for us,” Moon said on Facebook on Monday, adding: “I hope interKorea ties will also be like this.”

But the peace push has increasingly met with scepticism at home and abroad as denuclearisation talks between Pyongyang and Washington falter.

North Korea last week asked for a planned meeting between US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Kim’s right-hand man Kim Yong Chol to be delayed.

No clear explanation was given, but Pyongyang is demanding sanctions imposed on it over its weapons programmes are eased while the Washington insists that they should stay in place until the North denuclearises. (afp)

A new drug may boost dwindling treatment options for gonorrhea

GONORRHEA is a wily foe. But doctors may soon have another drug to fight the sexually transmitted infection that’s become resistant to nearly every antibiotic thrown its way. In clinical trials, a new antibiotic was effective at stopping the bacteria that causes the disease.

A single oral dose of the drug, called zoliflodacin, cured 96 percent of people who had gonorrhea infections in the urinary and genital organs, researchers report in the Nov. 8 New England Journal of Medi-

cine. In comparison, 100 percent of patients given ceftriaxone — the remaining antibiotic that’s effective against the disease in the United States — were successfully treated.

Caused by Neisseria gonorrhoe-

ae, gonorrhea can be passed from an infected person to a sexual partner or from an infected mother to her baby at birth. The consequences of the infection are especially severe for women, who can develop pelvic inflammatory disease and become infertile, and for babies, who can lose their sight. The United States had more than half a million new gonorrhea cases reported in 2017, up about 75 percent from the historical

low point in 2009. Worldwide, an estimated 78 million new gonorrhea infections occur each year.

In the United States, doctors treat an infection with a combination of ceftriaxone and another antibiotic called azithromycin. But bacterial strains resistant to ceftriaxone have cropped up in other countries, raising concerns of untreatable gonorrhea.

N. gonorrhoeae needs to replicate its genetic material. In a Phase II clinical trial to determine the drug’s effectiveness, 141 participants were split into three groups. One set got ceftriaxone. Of the two groups given either a two-gram or three-gram dose of zoliflodacin, 55 of 57 and 54 of 56 people, respectively, were cured of infections. Marijuana may change the decision-making part of teen brains

SAN DIEGO — Marijuana use during teenage years may change the brain in key decision-making areas, a study in rats suggests.

“Adolescence is a dangerous time to be insulting the brain, particularly with drugs of abuse,” study coauthor Eliza Jacobs-Brichford said November 7 at the annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience.

Jacobs-Brichford and colleagues gave adolescent male and female rats a marijuana-like compound. Afterward, the researchers found changes in parts of the brain involved in making decisions.

Normally, many of the nerve cells there are surrounded by rigid structures called perineuronal nets, sturdy webs that help stabilize connections between nerve cells. But in male rats that had been exposed to the marijuana-like compound in adolescence, fewer of these nerve cells, which help put the brakes on other cells’ activity, were covered by nets. Drug exposure didn’t seem to affect the nets in female rats.

“Males look more susceptible to these drugs,” said JacobsBrichford, a behavioral neuroscientist at the University of Illinois at Chicago. (IBP/net) After exposure to a marijuana-like drug in adolescence, male rats had changes in structures that surround and help stabilize certain nerve cells.

Balinese women remain shy about doing health checkup

DENPASAR — Health problems experienced by women, especially Balinese women, are cervical cancer and breast cancer. The two diseases are number one and two killers in women.

On that account, an early examination must be carried out so that prevention efforts can be carried out more optimally.

Chairman of the Bali Motivator Team of the Family Welfare Development (PKK), Putu Putri Suastini Koster, stated that Balinese women do not check up their health early because they are embarrassed and lazy.

According to her, actually it should not be a problem because it will be detected faster if there is a disease. “It does not matter if we know about our disease early, we don’t have to panic. But calm down because we can treat it earlier or prevent it. Sometimes it is embarrassing because it is related to our femininity,” she said on Friday (Nov. 9) in the IVA test program and clinical breast examination on BaliTV. If women have been given explanation about the importance of early examination of cervical cancer and breast cancer, according to her, it will not become a

problem for women to examine themselves. “Those who can prevent the disease should be supported by the environment,” she said.

Besides, she has a regular program to conduct free IVA examinations and clinical breast examination. This PKK program is intended for women, considering that women are vulnerable to cancer, especially cervical cancer and breast cancer. “Lately, it is getting faster and faster,” he added.

She encountered more and more women that have cervical cancer. Unfortunately, the patients just want to do treatment after advanced stages. On that account, the PKK Bali seeks to foster public awareness, especially for women.

The first thing to do is to educate and provide understanding for the community, especially

women, so that they can be prevented by early detection. “When having suffered, do treatment immediately and don’t wait until the cancer gets worse. This is also the responsibility of the government as well and of course all components of society,” she affirmed.

Women must also care for their siblings or people suffering from disease or having cancer.

“At least, we are informing where we should get medical treatment,” she added.

The PKK will continue to oversee public health, especially women’s health. This activity is carried out at all levels of PKK management such as in the provincial and district/city level.

Similarly, the Health Agency also has an IVA test program synergized with the PKK. “We do it routinely throughout Bali,” she concluded. (kmb32)

Chaotic OTT at customary village

MMDP Klungkung to summon all customary village chiefs

SEMARAPURA —Concerns of the customary village authorities over the Red Handed Operation (OTT) by law enforcement officers regarding the management of tourist objects are increasingly widespread. This happens because lately more and more individuals of tourist object management are arrested by police. Seeing this situation, Customary Village Middle Assembly (MMDP) of Klungkung will summon the chief of customary village across Klungkung to provide an explanation of this situation.

Chairman of the MMDP Klungkung, Ketut Rupia Arsana, stated on Sunday (Nov. 11) that he did not know much about the red handed operation intensified by the illegal levy eradication taskforce (Saber Pungli). He did not dare to give further explanation whether to advise temporary suspension all the tourist management fees collected by customary villages or other appeals. “We will coordinate first with the regional government, especially with the regent and the culture agency,” said Rupia Arsana.

On the other hand, Deputy Chairperson of the Klungkung House of Representatives, I Wayan Buda Parwata, when asked about this issue claimed to be quite surprised. The rules of the game are clear where the assets belong to customary villages. Based on the results of the customary meeting, there is ticket issued as levy

evidence. He hoped the regional government, in this case the regent, can sit together with district leadership council (Forkompinda) to discuss about this matter to find the right formulation.

By this way, the customary village managing can maintain the temple sanctity in the area of the tourist attraction. “With the role of customary village in empowering residents, customary villages in

empowering their regional potential and assets can help people’s economy to the low level of community,” said this Timuhun politician.

All this time, traditional villages having tourism potential can form and implement strong economic foundations by relying on economic players from the lower level with the support from stakeholders in Klungkung district. Similarly, this can give a view to tourism players entering the area of customary villages towards the changing of international tourism trends leading to quality tourism. This concept also directly grows tourism potentials and opportunities for economic multiplier effects in the local economic sector.

“This can prevent and minimize negative impacts of the tourism sector by providing the widest opportunity for customary villages to implement their customary awig-awig (bylaw) policies,” he said while adding the results are also for local customary interests such as repairing shrines or temples, and even alleviating residents in large ceremonies, such as mass or religious ceremonies.

On the other hand, Regent of Klungkung, Nyoman Suwirta, when asked for his response to this matter could not comment much. “We will discuss it further,” said Regent Suwirta. (kmb31)

Chief of Klungkung Police welcomed with gate sword tradition SEMARAPURA —Chief of Klungkung Police is now officially replaced. The baton was handed over by Chief of Bali Police, Petrus Reinhard Golose, in the Bali Police and district police main official position handover in the ranks of Bali Police in the Perkasa Raga Garwita Building, recently.

The old officer Bambang Tertianto was replaced by new officer I Komang Sudana.

After the handover, the new police chief was immediately greeted by the tradition of sword gate.

The farewell-welcome event of the old and new officials of the Klungkung Police was held last Saturday (Nov. 10). When arriving at the courtyard of the Klungkung Police headquarters, the old official Bambang Tertianto welcomed I Komang Sudana, with flower garland and bouquet. After that, it was followed by a procession of sword gate by the first officers with the rank of second and first police inspector led by the commander of the sword gate Nengah Simpen.

The sword gate tradition at welcoming to new officials like the district police chief has the meaning of how other officers will always be loyal to cover and guard their new leaders during the execution of the tasks. “Please cooperate with all parties. I am ready to continue what Mr. Bambang has been done,” said the police chief originating from Tulang Nyuh, Klungkung, who previously served in the Head of the Sub-Directorate III of Bali Police General Criminal Investigation Unit.

Furthermore, Komang Sudana headed to the Rupatama Room of the Klungkung Police to follow the unit report as well as the farewell of Bambang Tertianto through an umbrella gate procession. Bambang expressed his gratitude to his staff after leading quite well in Klungkung region for 1.5 years.

National Unity Day of India 143rd Birth Anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel

The Consulate General of India, Bali organized a function to celebrate National Unity Day, commemorating the 143rd Anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on Wednesday, 31st October 2018.

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was born in October 31, 1875 in Nadiad, Gujarat. Inspired by the work and philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi, he joined India’s struggle for independence. He organised peasants of Kheda, Bardoli and other parts of Gujarat and launched non-violent Civil Disobedience Movement in Gujarat, against the payment of raised tax, levied by the British government, leading to the British Government suspending the payment of revenue for that year.

His leadership qualities led him to becoming the President of the Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee in 1920 and he continued to serve as served in the post till 1945.

He was a strong supporter of the Non -Cooperation Movement of Gandhiji and worked against alcoholism, untouchability and caste discrimination in Gujarat. When Mahatma Gandhi was in prison, he led the Satyagraha movement in Nagpur in 1923 against the British law banning the raising of the Indian flag.

He was elected as the President of India National Congress in 1931. He was at the forefront of the Congress’ all India election campaign in 1934 and 1937 and

was a prominent leader in organising the Quit India Movement in 1942. He was arrested prior to the Quit India Movement and was released in 1945.

After India’s independence in 1947, he became the Deputy Prime Minister of India and India’s first Home Minister. He was the man behind the consolidation of 565 semi-autonomous princely states to form a united India. He passed away on 15 December 1950. He was a man of courage and determination and in the true sense, the ‘Iron Man of India’.

He was awarded India’s highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna, in 1991.

The participant was welcomed by The Consul General of India, Bali, Mr. R. O. Sunil Babu, who spoke about Sardar Patel’s single handed effort in integrating over 560 princely states and British administrative provinces into one single political entity that is India. He also informed the audience of the unveiling of a statue of Sardar Patel called the Statue of Unity on the Narmada River in Gujarat by the Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi on 31st October 2018. This statue is the world’s tallest statue at 182 metres.

On the same occasion, videos of Documentary Life of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was also shown to the audience. The gathering was closed by group photo session covering all consulate members and participants.

LOS ANGELES - Universal Pictures saw plenty of green over the weekend as its remake of “The Grinch” pulled in an impressive $66 million in North American theaters, industry tracker Exhibitor Relations reported Sunday.

The three-day estimate put the ever-popular Dr. Seuss tale -- with Benedict Cumberbatch voicing the small-hearted, ill-tempered, kid-hating title character -- well ahead of last week’s No. 1 film, “Bohemian Rhapsody,” which slid to second place with a still-healthy take of $30.9 million.

It also put this “Grinch” comfortably ahead of the Ron Howard-directed 2000 version, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” which took in $55 million in its opening weekend.

The new film also features the voices of Rashida Jones, Kenan Thompson and Angela Lansbury, with Pharrell Williams narrating.

“Bohemian Rhapsody,” with Rami Malek playing Queen lead singer Freddie Mercury, has drawn mixed reviews but has proved a foot-stomping audience favorite. The Fox production has taken $100 million domestically in its first two weeks and $110 million overseas.

In third place, at $10.1 million, was Paramount’s new release “Overlord,” a supernatural horror film set against a backdrop of the D-Day invasion. It stars Jovan Adepo and Wyatt Russell.

Another seasonal film, Disney’s “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms,” placed fourth, at $9.6 million. It stars Mackenzie Foy as a young girl who travels to a magic land in search of a key to unlock a gift from her late mother. Keira Knightley, Helen Mirren and Morgan Freeman also star.

Fifth spot went to new Sony release “The Girl in the Spider’s Web,” which took in what analysts called a disappointing $8 million.

Guitarist Joe Perry recovering after collapsing at NY concert NEW YORK - Famed Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry was recovering in hospital Sunday after collapsing shortly after performing with rock superstar Billy Joel in New York’s Madison Square Garden.

Perry, who is 68, suffered “shortness of breath and was treated backstage by paramedics who gave the guitarist oxygen and used a tracheal tube to clear his airway,” said a statement from a spokesman.

It said he was “alert and responsive” on Sunday, but would have to cancel an appearance later in the day at a rock ‘n’ roll fantasy camp in Florida.

“Perry is expected to return to the road later this month,” the statement said.

Perry was playing hit song “Walk This Way,” penned by him and Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and later covered by hip-hop group Run-DMC, shortly before he collapsed in his dressing room, TMZ reported.

Small team leads harrowing search for California fire victims

A small team searching for victims of one of California’s deadliest fires happen upon a man lying face down between two ash-covered pickup trucks. His body and clothes seem intact, aside from hideous burns around his calves.

“You never get used to it. You have to face reality,” says one of a trio of sheriff deputies searching for the dead in the wreckage around the town of Paradise. “Everybody has its own way to cope with it,” he mused. “Mine? Better leave that unanswered.”

The “Camp Fire” in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains north of the state capital Sacramento has claimed 29 lives, razed 6,400 buildings and effectively wiped Paradise off the map.

For the past days, this team -- one deputy from Butte County and two from neighboring Yuba County -- has scoured the town

and the many nearby communities nestled in this hilly area searching for human remains.

On Sunday the team drove several miles up a steep rocky road keeping an eye out for possible victims. They refused to give their names and had little to say as they focused on their macabre task.

- Many people missing Scores of people have gone missing since the wildfire broke out on Thursday and swept through the area. Some survivors may be huddled in a hotel or at a shelter, unable to communicate with loved ones because the fire has destroyed

area cell phone towers.

Others -- like the man face down on the hills overlooking Lake Concow -- were caught by the fast-moving flames as they tried to escape the inferno.

Was he overcome by smoke?

Did he live at the nearby farm, of which nothing survived except for scorched marijuana plants inside the charred shell of a greenhouse?

“Far too early to tell” said one of the Yuba County deputies.

- Abandoned vehicles The deputies took pictures, noted GPS coordinates, and picked up documents inside the cars in hopes

of eventually making an identification. They lifted the corpse, placed it in a body bag, and loaded it into a hearse that had followed them from Paradise.

Without wasting time they resumed their search for fire victims.

Dozens of cars and trucks, some seemingly intact, litter the sides of roads in the area. The deputies check each one for victims.

Inside the shell of one torched vehicle that had slammed into a tree they find a ball of burnt flesh the size of a small child.

A deputy carefully removes it and places the remains on a white tarp for careful examination. “No skull. It’s an animal!” he cries out after several minutes. The deputy wipes his hands and a brief smile crosses his face. “We’re moving

on,” he says.

The team continues on the meandering road and eventually reach an abandoned farm, where ducks, geese and goats roam freely.

The unexpected encounter with farm animals breaks the tension -but as they drive off, with just one more hour of sunlight available, the hearse blows a tire. “We’re done,” one of the deputies says. “We’ll get back to it tomorrow.” (afp) News can also be heard in “Bali Image” at Global Radio FM 96.5 from 9.30 until 10.00 am.
