Katy Perry lined up for Super Bowl gig Agence France-Presse

WASHINGTON - Katy Perry will perform at the half-time show for American football’s Super Bowl championship, one of the nation’s most watched TV spectacles, Billboard reported Friday. The music industry Bible, gave no details about the planned event, but according to a Wall Street Journal report in August, pop diva Perry had been on a shortlist of potential Super Bowl performers that also included Coldplay and Rihanna. The game will be played in Phoenix, Arizona on February 1, 2015 to crown

the champions of America’s best beloved sport. Representatives for Perry and the National Football League did not return email requests for comment. The last Super Bowl halftime extravaganza, which featured Bruno Mars and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, drew a record 111.5 million TV viewers.

So coveted is the marquee gig that the NFL -- one of the world’s richest pro sports organizations -- reportedly considered asking this year’s act to pay for the privilege. Perry has poured cold water on that idea, telling ESPN sports television channel last weekend: “I’m not the kind of girl that would pay to play the Super Bowl.” Perry, who turns 30 on October 25, is known as much for her flamboyant costumes as she is for a raft of hits including “California Gurls,” “Dark Horse,” “Firework,” “Part of Me” and “Roar.”

Lindsay Lohan seeks redemption on London stage Agence France-Presse

LONDON - Lindsay Lohan pouts from the billboards of London’s West End theatre district, where the Hollywood wildchild is making her stage debut in a bid to relaunch a career eclipsed by her off-screen antics. “Lilo” is appearing as secretary Karen in “Speed-the-Plow”, David Mamet’s three-act play satirising the US movie business, running at the

Playhouse Theatre until November 29. The 28-year-old former Disney actress has recently moved from New York to a flat in London, calling the British capital a more “adult” city. She has had to instil some self-discipline to deal with the rigours of the London stage, contrary to commentators who deemed her out

of control. The play helps counter “the perception that I’m just a psycho that goes out and stuff”, she told Time Out magazine. “I think it shows that I can be accountable. “I’ve done things, but people grow up and they change. I’m willing to work hard to gain back the respect that I once had and have lost.” Although she won praise for her performance as a teen in the 2004 film

“Mean Girls,” she has since become better known for her drug problems, rehab visits, legal woes and lively social life. She has been in and out of court on a regular basis since 2007. Before curtain up at the Playhouse, theatregoers took pictures of themselves in front of the posters, which feature a

tight close-up of Lohan. “I want her to be really good. I want her to prove all her critics wrong,” said Matthew Nichols, 33, from Manchester in northwest England. “It’s been brave for her to do it because she’s never done any theatre work and obviously London is the theatre capital of the world,” he said. Doubtless aware of the gamble, Lohan has plumped for a play where she is not in the lead role, even if she is the star attraction. On stage, she is flanked by two old hands who set the pace. Emmy Award winner Richard Schiff played White House communications director Toby Ziegler in “The West Wing”. Meanwhile British theatre veteran Nigel Lindsay starred as Shrek in “Shrek the Musical” in the West End and Islamist convert Barry in the 2010 dark comedy film “Four Lions”. As a sexy secretary, Lohan convincingly embodies the role which seems tailor-made when her character says: “I know what it is to be bad. I’ve been bad. I know what it is to be lost.” And there have been encouraging reviews from the London theatre critics, who are reputed for their sharp tongues.

Families of victims commemorate Bali Bombing Antara

KUTA - Families of the victims of the first Bali bombing and a number of foreign tourists commemorated the 12th anniversary of the tragedy by conducting prayers and sowing flowers at a monument at Legian, Kuta, Badung District, Bali, Sunday. At around 08.30 am local time, representatives of the victims’ families accompanied by the Governor of Bali, Made Mangku Pastika

and Australian Consulate General Majell Hind paid respect to the 202 victims whose names were written on the wall of the monument

specially set up in remembrance of them. The bustle of tourist activities in Legian turned into a moment of silence during a minute of observation. “This commemoration is not only to remember but also to remind people, government and the world that today twelve years ago a terrible humanitarian tragedy had

occurred, whose impact we still feel until now,” the chairwoman of Wives and Children of Bali Bombing Foundation (Isana Dewata) Ni Luh Erniati said. An Australian citizen, Jan Laczynski specially came to Bali to mourn over his best Balinese friend, I Wayan Tamba, who died in the tragedy. “I always come every year to Bali to pay respect to and remem-

ber my best friend,” he said. He came to the monument bringing flowers and an Australian flag and prayed in front of an empty land which was the former location of the Sari Club where the bombing occurred and always remembered his friend although it had been 12 years ago. “I hope there is no bombing again because it is so terrible,” he said.
