NEW YORK - Nicki Minaj has denied insulting the parenting skills of rival rapper Cardi B after an alleged fracas at a New York Fashion Week party.

The stars were reportedly embroiled in a vicious altercation at the Harpers Bazaar event last week, after which Cardi B posted on Instagram to accuse Minaj of making disparaging remarks about her ability as a mother.

Cardi B - real name Belcalis Almanzar - gave birth to daughter Kulture in July.

Addressing the accusation for the first time on her Queen Radio show, Minaj - real name Onika Tanya - said she would “never talk about anyone’s child or parenting”.

“I don’t care about anyone’s parenting - I don’t give a s*** and it’s so crazy to me that people always need to make Onika the bad guy,”

bemoaned the 35-year-old.

“I just want to let the world know that Onika Tanya Maraj would never, has never and will never speak ill of anyone’s child.

I am not a clown. That’s clown s***.”

Minaj - who is said to have had bad blood with Cardi B since 2017 - added that she was left “mortified” after footage of the alleged scuffle circulated online.

Avril Lavigne ‘accepted death’ while writing new song as singer tells of Lyme disease fight

Avril Lavigne has announced she will be returning to music after suffering Lyme disease.

LOS ANGELES - Avril Lavigne had “accepted death” when she wrote a new song on her sickbed during “one of the scariest moments” of her life.

In a blog, the 33-year-old singer has written an emotional letter to fans, thanking them for their patience as she confirmed her single’s release date, marking her comeback.

Lavigne, who rose to fame with the single Complicated in 2002, has been away from the music scene for five years, and has spent the last four battling Lyme disease.

Speaking of the disease, the Canadian star said: “Those were the worst years of my life as I went through both physical and emotional battles. I was able to turn that fight into music I’m really

proud of.

“Truly... by keeping my spirits up, having goals to reach and a purpose to live for, my music helped to heal me and keep me alive.”

She has also been through a difficult personal time, divorcing her husband of two years, Nickelback’s Chad Kroeger, in 2015.

Lavigne said the first single from the new album would be Head Above Water, a song which she says was written when she had “accepted death”.

She added: “My mother held me. In her arms, I wrote the first song that I am releasing to tell my story.”

Lavigne admitted she has not wanted to be open about suffering with the disease, but is now determined to help raise awareness

through her foundation.

She said: “Part of me doesn’t want to talk about being sick because I want it to all be behind me, but I know I have to.

“Because not only is it a part of my life, I need to bring awareness to the severity of Lyme Disease.

“People aren’t aware that Lyme must be treated almost immediately. Often if they are aware, they go untreated simply because they can’t get a Lyme diagnosis!

“And even when they do get a diagnosis, a lot of times they simply can’t afford the treatment.”

Lavigne’s health started to deteriorate in 2014, but it was several months before she was diagnosed with Lyme disease. (net)

Highways clogged with people fleeing North and South Carolina early Wednesday as monstrous Category 4 Hurricane Florence rumbled toward the eastern US as the biggest storm there in decades.

While many coastal residents heeded mandatory evacuation orders, others boarded up homes and businesses and chose to brave the storm, which is forecast to trigger severe flash flooding as it dumps as many as three feet (almost a meter) of rain in some areas. Lifethreatening storm surges of up to a staggering 13 feet in some places were also forecast.

Cooper warned that staying put would be a grave mistake and said people in evacuation zones “need to get out now.”

“This is not a storm that people need to ride out,” Cooper told reporters. “This is a storm that is historic, maybe once in a lifetime.”

Up to 1.7 million people in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia have been given voluntary or mandatory evacuation orders,

according to emergency management officials, as the storm churned across the Atlantic Ocean towards the coast. The eastbound lanes of several major highways have been shut down to allow for a smooth flow of traffic inland.

“We are already experiencing heavily impacted traffic on some of the evacuation routes,” said Jeff Byard, the associate administrator for response and recovery at the

Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

Forecasters are predicting that Florence will make landfall in the Carolinas late Thursday or early Friday as a still powerful Category 3 hurricane. As of 5:00 am (1100 GMT), Florence was a dangerous Category 4 hurricane packing sustained winds of 130 miles per hour (220 kilometers per hour), the Miami-based National Hurricane Center (NHC) said.

It was located 575 miles (925 kms) east-southeast of Cape Fear, North Carolina, and moving at 17

mph (28 kph) in a west-northwest direction. Briefing from the Oval Office, President Donald Trump urged people to heed orders to evacuate, saying “if you are asked to leave, get out.”

IN order to overcome the problem of traffic congestion in southern Bali, the Ngurah Rai underpass was recently built to ease the flow of traffic for the IMF-WB 2018 delegates.

Tourism businessman and First Deputy Chairman of the Indonesia Hotel General Manager Association (IHGMA), I Made Ramia Adnyana, however feels that the new underpass is not 100 effective at overcome traffic congestion in southern Bali, though he did admit that it will smooth traffic at the Ngruah Rai intersection.

The project that cost IDR 326 billion was created by the government in an effort reduce the traffic congestion that plagues this area. “Road access to and from the airport

needs to have minimal traffic congestion as people are on a schedule to catch their planes”, he aid on Tuesday (Sep 11). So according to Adnyana there should be no additional turn-off – especially from the toll road. “The road should lead directly to the airport with no obstacles so tourists can feel comfortable getting to and from the airport”, he said.

Now, all overflowing vehicles from the Bali Mandara toll road are led to the Dewa Ruci intersection and vehicles arriving from the other direction have to turn around at the Ngurah Rai underpass roundabout, so queued up vehicles could cause congestion on the path to the airport.

General Manager of Puri Saron Hotel, Gusti Kade Sutawa, shares a similar opinions however car rental entrepreneur I Made Mendra Astawa disagrees and feels that the underpass can help reduce traffic congestion and improve transportation services.

South Bali experiences traffic congestion to such a degree that tourists may loose confidence in being able to enjoy this area. Balinese residence of other regions however may find that this is a blessings as more tourists choose ot visit other regions of Bali like Amed and Candidasa in Karangasem, or

other parts of Bali.

Nevertheless, South Bali primarily Kuta still reflects Bali tourism in general and as the entrance into Bali should give a good impression to visitors. The underpass should be able to reduce general congestion in the area by about 25 percent.

Some however believe this will only work temporarily.

Astawa however maintains that lessening traffic jams at important intersections is already a big help.

“There is still frequent congestion at many intersections like the Dewa Ruci intersection. “It used to be common to st there for 30 –60 minutes. We had really fight our way through there”, he said.

Overcoming the problem of traffic congestion cannot rely solely on the roads themselves but also needs to involve cheap and comfortable public transportation options like light rapid transport (LRT) and mass rapid transit (MRT), as presently more than a 1,000 new vehicles are beng added to the roads of Bali every month.

It costs a lot more to build an underpass than an overpass, however according to Balinese local wisdom overpasses cannot be built over holy places. (kmb42)

Residents appealed not to do combustion activities

BANGLI - People living near forest areas in Kintamani are encouraged not to conduct any burning activities near or in the forest.

Such activity is very vulnerable to trigger forest fires especially during the current dry season.

“We appeal to farmers working on forest land, both in the forest of Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) and Forest Management Unit (KPH), in which

the beneath cultivated with elephant grass to avoid burning. Likewise, the road users should not to litter cigarette butts carelessly,” said Section Head of Emergency and Logistics at the BPBD Bangli, Ketut Agus Sutapa, on Tuesday (Sep. 9).

Agus stated that based on the experiences so far, many cases of forest fires were alleged to have been caused by the burning of land committed by residents around the

forest. By and large, the land burning is intentionally committed during dry season, so that later in the rainy season the grass can grow well again.

In addition, another cause sparking the occurrence of fires is the cigarette butt littered by residents near the forest area. In order to prevent forest fires from happening again during dry season, his agency reminded the public to be vigilant and take good care of the forest.

Teens would rather text than talk to you, survey finds

CALIFORNIA - Most American teenagers are constantly using social media, and half admit that it distracts them from looking up and talking to people right in front of them, a new survey shows.

More teens now say they prefer texting to talking to other people in person, and they admit smartphone apps are waking them up at night and distracting them from homework, the survey by Common Sense Media shows.

No surprises there to anyone who knows a teenager, but the survey also shows that teens are very much aware of the pitfalls of social media use. They suspect that social media companies are trying to manipulate them, and they deny that their constant use of Instagram, Snapchat and other apps is making them lonely.

“Social media has transformed adolescence and the lives of millions and millions of teens,” said Jim Steyer, CEO and founder of Common Sense Media, which conducts research into media use.

“Teens have even told us in this landmark report that they are distracted from their friends, from their homework and from sleep,” Steyer told NBC News.

“A lot of teens feel addicted to social media.”

Common Sense interviewed more than 1,100 teens aged 13 to 17 for about three weeks this spring and found some surprises. Teenagers are not mindless slaves to their smartphones, the survey found.

“Teens are often depicted as being heedless of the consequences of spending so much time on their smartphones,” the report reads.

“In reality, our survey reveals that teens are fully aware of the power of devices to distract them from key priorities, such as homework, sleep and time with friends and family.”

More than half — 57 percent — said social media distracts them from doing homework and 54 percent

admitted that they sometimes ignored people they were with to pay attention to social media. And 29 percent said a text or other notification had woken them up at night.

“A large proportion of all teens (44 percent) say they get frustrated with their friends for being on their phones so much when they’re hanging out together,” the report reads.

There’s no doubt that mobile devices dominate the lives of young people. More than 80 percent of the teenagers surveyed said they used social media.

That’s no more than in 2012, but now, 70 percent say they’re using social media multiple times a day, compared with just a third of them in 2012, the survey found.

Apps often drive this. One example is the Snapchat “streak,” in which users must send at least one message every single day to certain friends and acquaintances.

And while the teens don’t necessarily fight back by refusing to be drawn in, they are at least aware of what’s happening, the report showed.

“Nearly three out of four teens (72 percent) believe that tech companies manipulate users to spend more time on their devices,” the report reads.

“We find it very encouraging that teens are very aware that social media companies like Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook are manipulating them. That means that they’re increasingly aware that those companies don’t necessarily have their best interests at heart,” Steyer said.

But teenagers like the technology. The proportion of teens who say their favorite way to communicate with their friends in person dropped from 49 percent in 2012 to 32 percent in 2018.

It’s not all negative. A quarter of the teens surveyed said these apps make them feel less lonely, and only 3 percent said using them makes them feel more isolated. (net)

A close check of medical records from 2006 to 2015 showed that a physician gave no explanation at all for writing an opioid prescription in 29 percent of the cases, the team at Harvard Medical School and the Rand Corp. found.

Many opioid prescriptions go unexplained

MASSACHUSETTS - Doctors gave no good reason for prescribing opioids to patients close to a third of the time during the buildup to the opioid overdose epidemic, researchers reported Monday.

A close check of medical records from 2006 to 2015 showed that a physician gave no explanation at all for writing an opioid prescription in 29 percent of the cases, the team at Harvard Medical School and the Rand Corp. found.

The findings help support criticism by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Food and Drug Administration and others that say inappropriate prescribing practices have helped drive the opioid crisis, in which 42,000 people died in 2016 alone.

The CDC has been trying to get doctors to prescribe opioids only when absolutely necessary, and to prescribe as low a dose as possible for the shortest time possible.

Nicole Maestas, a professor of health care policy at Harvard, and her colleagues went through tens of thousands of medical records, focusing on more than 31,000 physician surveys that included a prescription for an opioid.

Two-thirds did include a pain diagnosis: usually back pain, arthritis, diabetes or other chronic condition.

Five percent were for pain related to cancer.

“No pain diagnosis was recorded at the remaining 28.5 percent,” the team wrote in their report, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine.

Many patients had multiple ailments, so the researchers threw out any surveys that may have simply lacked space to record all the diagnoses. Still, many patients got renewals of opioids for no apparent good reason.

“At visits with no pain diagnosis recorded, the most common diagnoses were hypertension, hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol), opioid dependence and ‘other follow-up examination,’ ” the researchers wrote.

The number of opioid prescrip-

tions rose dramatically over the past 20 years, and the CDC says people would do better with other painkillers, or even just ice.

Since there’s been a big national focus on the crisis, prescribing has dropped, but not enough, the CDC says.

At the very least, doctors need to write down why they are giving someone an opioid, the researchers said.

“Whatever the reasons, lack of robust documentation undermines our efforts to understand physician prescribing patterns and curtails our ability to stem overprescribing,” Dr. Tisamarie Sherry, who worked on the study, said in a statement.

Meanwhile, a second study showed that most teens and young adults who have opioid use disorders are not getting the medication they do need.

Drugs such as buprenorphine, naltrexone and methadone can help people fight their addiction to opioids.

But the team at Boston Medical Center found that only 24 percent of youths with an opioid use disorder had a prescription for one of the drugs.

“In this multistate study of addiction treatment and retention in care, we found that three-quarters of youths diagnosed with opioid use disorder received treatment within three months,” the team wrote in the Journal of the American Medical Association’s JAMA Pediatrics.

“However, most treatment included behavioral health services only, and fewer than one of four youths received timely buprenorphine, naltrexone or methadone treatment.”

Many doctors don’t know about the drugs; there’s stigma around their use and it can be hard to get methadone especially, the researchers noted.

People with opioid use disorder are far more likely to drop out of treatment and relapse if they don’t get Food and Drug Administrationapproved drug treatment, the researchers noted. (net)

Chief Raka said that police are constantly trying to find out the traces where Gatis last stayed namely at the Green Spirit Villa at Kutub hamlet, Sayan, Ubud.

Until now, there are no indications if Gatis had departed. “We are still looking for her, even though no traces are left as if she had lost like being swallowed by the earth,” he said He said that aside from leaving no traces, the missing of Getis also left a big question mark, where the bag and clothes of Gatis kept in the villa’s room remain available. According to him, Gatis did not check out when leaving the villa. “All the clothes are still available and we have secured them,” he explained.

The toys used to be made from bamboo and wood in the past were displayed in the parade in a series of welcoming the Islamic New Year of Muharam 1, 1440 Hijriyah, on Monday night (Sep. 10). In addition to the torch parade, this traditional toy is deliberately highlighted so that younger generation knows the toy often used by children of that era.

Marine animal carcasses stranded on Yeh Kuning and Perancak Beach

NEGARA - Carcasses of decayed marine animals were found stranded on Yeh Kuning Beach and Perancak Beach on Tuesday (Sep. 9). On Perancak Beach, residents found the wreckage of bottlenose dolphin getting stranded near the Kurma Asih turtle breeding site.

The carcass of dolphin is known to have a length of 85 cm and a diameter of 48 cm. By residents that discovered, the dolphin carcass was buried on the beach.

Coordinator of the Kurma Asih Sea Turtle Conservation Group (KPP) of Perancak, I Wayan Anom Astika Jaya, said the dolphin carcass was found by residents around 8:00. After being checked, no injuries were found on the body.

The dolphin belongs to the bottle nose type. Two months ago, similar carcasses of marine animals were also found around the area.

Other than on Perancak Beach, animal carcasses were also found by residents on Yeh Kuning Beach on Monday morning. However, the exact species is not known because the condition has been destroyed.

Visually, the Mount Agung looks calm and above the peak of Mount Agung looks clean. There is no thick puff of smoke coming out of the volcanic crater. The Head of the Mt. Agung Emergency Response Team at the Rendang Monitoring Post, Isyak, stated on Sunday (Sep. 9) that since August the volcanic activities of Mount Agung had experienced a significant decline. It looks a little quieter than the previous phase when the eruption threw flare.

However, to date the seismographs are still recording volcanic earthquakes that trigger gusts.

“The activity of Mount Agung indeed begins to decrease slightly.

No more eruptions have occurred since last month. The Lombok

earthquake some time ago slightly affected the activities of Mount Agung where the amount of blowing occurrence slightly increased.

White gusts still occurred with a maximum height of 300 meters dominated by water vapor. Within a month, the gusts occurred for 30 times. So, it averagely happened for 4-5 times a day,” he said.

Isyak added, even though the activities of Mount Agung are slightly subsided, it remains to have potential for eruption. However, the eruption occurred is not as big as the previous phase. It is only hydrothermal occurring in the crater because at this time the magmatic pressure below began to decrease.

Until now, there has been no hope of adding a supply of magma to the surface of the crater. So, if there is an eruption it will not reach a large radius of 4 km and it remains to be predicted to occur around a crater.

“Since the gas pressure below starts

to weaken, it triggers a quite small eruption. Maximally, it will only trigger gusts,” he said.

When asked if there will be a decline in the status to the alert level following the decline of this activity, Isyak asserted, that until now the status remains at level III (watch). He explained that to reduce the status, his agency is still monitoring the development and the next condition of the Mount Agung.

If indeed in terms of seismicity it actually decreases constantly, and in terms of deformation and other components that support for this decline, there will be further coordination for evaluation whether the status will be lowered or not.

“So far, there are still hot spots in the body of Mount Agung. Sometimes there are also visible fires at the top. In essence, we continue to monitor the development of Mount Agung all the times,” said Isyak. (kmb41)

Melbourne’s Herald Sun cartoonist Mark Knight’s caricature of Williams throwing a tantrum at the US Open was originally printed on Monday, attracting widespread condemnation from across the world.

Under the front-page headline “WELCOME TO PC WORLD”, the newspaper wrote Wednesday that “if the self-appointed censors of Mark Knight get their way on his Serena Williams cartoon, our new politically correct life will be very dull indeed”.

The cover included caricatures of other Australian and foreign political leaders drawn by Knight.

The veteran cartoonist added Wednesday he had suspended his Twitter account to protect his family and friends.

Prior to disabling his account, his tweet of the cartoon had attracted more than 22,000 comments, most of them critical.

Knight labelled the outcry against his cartoon as a sign that the “world has just gone crazy”.

“I drew this cartoon Sunday night after seeing the US Open final, and seeing the world’s best tennis player have a tantrum and thought that was interesting,” he said in quotes published on the News Corp Australia paper’s website Wednesday.

“The cartoon about Serena is about her poor behaviour on the day, not about race.”

The caricature has also sparked renewed debate in Australia about racist and sexist discourse in the highly multicultural nation.

“I thought they went over the top. The depiction of Serena was pretty vile,” Melbourne commuter Louise Rodbourn told AFP, echoing the mood of many city workers Wednesday.

“I think it’s disgusting. I find it really, a little offensive,” added fellow Melbourne resident Nowal Kahsai. But some said the controversy had gone too far.

“The Osaka region which was hit by the typhoon is about 10.9 percent of Japan’s GDP. It’s slightly larger than Belgium and about the same as Sweden,” noted Kohei Iwahara, economist at Natixis Japan Securities.

“You have the ports affected, Kansai Airport malfunctioning and the question is: how long is it going to last?” asked the expert.

One week after Typhoon Jebi ravaged western Japan, the airport is still not fully functional, with power not yet completely restored and access via the damaged bridge still not back to normal.

It has operated fewer than 100 flights in total since last Tuesday’s typhoon, a far cry from the 400 per day it usually runs in its round-theclock operation.

Kansai airport has been beset by setbacks from the beginning and has spent vast amounts on protection from the elements -- such as high walls and waterproof barriers -- which proved of limited value

when the typhoon struck.

According to Mizuho Securities, the typhoon and an earthquake in the more rural island of Hokkaido has increased the danger of a cut in Japan’s GDP, which came in at 0.7 percent on-quarter in April-June.

The disasters cut supply lines and could result in a 0.2-percentage point dip in factory output in the third quarter, Mizuho said.

The 6.6-magnitude Hokkaido quake knocked out the main thermal power plant, causing a total blackout for the three million households on the island and havoc for logistics. The plant will not be fully up and running until at least November. Car giant Toyota for example was forced to stop production in the whole country because it was not being supplied with parts from its factory in Hokkaido.

- ‘The damage is severe’ Yoshihisa Inada, from the Osaka-based Asia Pacific Institute of Research, noted that more than one in three of Japan’s 28 million foreign tourists passed through Kansai last year, en route to the popular destinations of Kyoto and Nara.

“Companies can choose alternative airports (for exports) but the problem is tourism,” he told AFP. “If the situation at the airport continues for one month, the tourists can’t come and the value added will disappear, so how do I make money?

The damage is severe,” he said.

Typhoon Jebi was just the latest in a series of natural disasters to afflict western Japan -- after a deadly earthquake in Osaka in June and flooding in July that killed more than 200. These events did spark “some cancellations and a negative impact on demand in the South Korean and Hong Kong market”, admitted Ryoko Hasegawa from the Japan National Tourism Organisation. But Iwahara from Natixis said any effect on tourism should not last too long.

“Given the past record in Japan, earthquakes and typhoons are part of everyday life. So the impact should be short-lived and overcome in a month or two,” he told AFP. Inada agreed, saying that foreign visitors should realise that Japan is “very resilient”.

BUSINESS Months of deadly unrest devastate Nicaragua’s economy

LEON - Two days after protests began in Nicaragua in April, a foreign auto components company was meeting at a hotel in the city of Leon when smoke from a burning university building just a block away billowed above the hotel’s colonnaded courtyard.

The visitors quickly cut short their event and began changing their travel plans to exit Nicaragua. Within three months, the El Convento hotel itself was forced to close for lack of business, as a sister hotel in the same city had in June.

Nicaragua’s economy has been devastated by the nearly five months of unrest sparked by cuts to social security benefits that quickly evolved into calls for President Daniel Ortega to step down.

In June, the country’s economic activity was down 12.1 percent compared to a year earlier, according to the central bank. Economists estimate 200,000 jobs have been shed, including as many as 70,000 in the tourism sector, which has become Nicaragua’s top source of foreign currency in the past two years.

Revenue at hotels and restaurants plunged 45 percent in June compared to 2017, according to Nicaragua’s central bank. Similarly, construction suffered a 35 percent drop and retail 27 percent. Some $900 million in deposits fled Nicaragua’s banks. They responded by tightening their lending to preserve liquidity, thus also contributed to the economic slowdown.

Nicaraguan Union of Agricultural Producers says more than 12,000 acres of private land have been occupied by government supporters in what business leaders have called confiscations in revenge for their support of the protesters.

The producers say 91 percent of the land occupied by squatters was used for farming and livestock.

Victor Hugo Sevilla, the general manager of both Leon hotels, continues checking email, but said “I haven’t gotten any requests from foreigners for reservations. We have received five, maybe eight, rate inquiries from domestic (travelers), but no firm reservations.”

Leon, Nicaragua’s second-largest city, was among the places where protests and roadblocks were most intense. From the beginning, those protests were met with vio-

lence from riot police and civilian government supporters. In July, they violently cleared the roadblocks and ran protesting students off occupied university campuses.

More than 300 people have been killed in the unrest, according to human rights groups. The government calls the protesters “terrorists” and says it defeated an attempt to drive Ortega from office that was sponsored by the U.S. government and domestic opposition, including some in the private sector.

Ortega conceded this month that the roadblocks and unrest have cost the country jobs. In an interview with Spanish news agency EFE, he said domestic tourism was starting to return, but “where there has been more of a problem is in attracting international tourism, because this situation tends to repel the tourists.”

A major factor has been that the countries that send Nicaragua’s big-spending foreign tourists, including the U.S., Canada, Spain and England, issued travel warnings urging their citizens to avoid travel to Nicaragua.

Major airlines such as American and United cut their flights to Managua from three per day to one. Spirit, Delta and other carriers trimmed their flights as well, said Jose Adan Aguerri, president of the Superior Council for Private Enterprise. The council, which is Nicaragua’s main business chamber, joined the call for a national strike Sept. 7. The Civic Alliance, formed to represent a broad swath of Nicaraguan society in a stalled dialogue with the government, said the strike aimed to push the government back to dialogue and to protest the arrest of alliance members and other political prisoners.

The country’s primary tourist destinations like the colonial gem Granada and the Pacific coast surfer paradise San Juan del Sur began feeling the consequences of the unrest almost immediately. Hotels and restaurants cut back hours, then days and eventually closed completely.

tion here to a civil, peaceful protest by the students, where people began to lose their lives, society suffered a social explosion where the private sector aligned with the people,” he said. “The private sector is committed to trying to find a negotiated exit from the crisis.”

Juan Sebastian Chamorro, who leads the Nicaraguan Foundation for Economic and Social Development, said the government has shown signs that it recognizes the severity of the economic impact. It has issued new debt, adjusted rules to tighten the selling of dollars and cut public spending as it forecasts a 10 percent drop in tax revenue.

Whether any of that will be enough to stop the economy’s slide is doubtful unless it’s accompanied by a political solution that restores stability, experts said.

For years Leon had been at best a day trip for foreign tourists beginning to explore better-known Granada or San Juan del Sur. But the city had worked hard to get attention and Art Collection Hotels had bet on its prospects by opening its second hotel, La Recoleccion, in 2017.

“We had high expectations for this year,” said Sevilla, the manager of the closed hotels.

He had 113 employees between the two properties. They were able to suspend 67, which will enable them to come back without losing any benefits of seniority, but the rest were laid off. He has remained in touch with some of the workers. Those still around are taking whatever work they can find, but he estimated at least half left the country, with most of those seeking tourism sector jobs in Costa Rica.

The hotels have 190 reservations for November — the start of the high season — but that’s less than half what they had in November last year. Still, he hopes they can start working their way back again in October. Even if that works out, he predicts a slow climb back to normalcy. Cafes and shops selling handicrafts around Leon’s historic center were open this week, but a number of hotels and hostels in the area were shuttered.

“I think it will take at least 12 months, maybe more, to be able to restart the tourism engine,” he said. (ap)

Barong Bangkung Street Show

As a tradition, the Hindu community in Bali celebrates Galungan and Kuningan by delivering oblations accompanied with art activities. It also happens to the celebration of Galungan (Feb. 10) and Kuningan (Feb. 20), where during the feast the barong bangkung or barong bangkal troupe will definitely do ngelawang or street show.

Barong bangkal or barong bangkung is a large enough and old pig considered a mythical animal having a mystical power. Attires of the barong are made of black and white velvet.

However, in general, the attires are not pretentious like that of other types of barong.

In every show, the barong bangkung is also equipped with trinkets of ate leaves and the dancers are wearing checkered trousers and rattles tied on legs, so that when moving they will generate rattling sound. Barong bangkal is carried by two dancers and the performances are held in the streets and around the village.

With the presence of barong show, villagers will feel they have been protected by deities marked by the arrival of barong bangkal or barong bangkung. The show is accompanied with batel bebarongan gamelan music consisting of drums, tawa-tawa, kelenang, kelenong, cymbals and kempur.

The word ngelawang is derived from the word lawang meaning ‘door,’ a term in the Balinese language that means a gallivanting show from one house to another or from one village to another. This gallivanting show with diverse Balinese artistic traditions is performed by art troupe.

Allegedly this traditional show sources from a Hindu mythology, namely Shiva Tattva. Once upon a time Lord Shiva and Goddess Uma are making love in improper place and time, so that harmony shakes. As a result, it brings in misery for mankind and other living beings.

Pasir Putih Beach in East Bali is one of the island’s ‘hidden’ beaches. Despite its remote location, this beach gained popularity being referred to by various nicknames, such as Perasi Beach referring to its village where it is located, including ‘White Sand Beach’, ‘Virgin Beach’ and simply, ‘Hidden Beach’. The secluded coast of Pasir Putih Beach stretches between two hills between the villages of Bugbug and Perasi, both located in the Karangasem regency and approximately 4.5km east of the main hub of Candidasa.

Getting to Pasir Putih Beach is quite an adventurous ride. From the main area of Candidasa, continue onto the Jalan Raya CandidasaBugbug main road until you arrive at the neighbourhood of Perasi village.

Among the dozen are Warung Maria, Warung Sederhana, Warung Kokak, Virgin Cafe, Warung Sunrise, Warung Gusti & Leo, Warung Budi Ayu, and Relax Cafe.

Several others also provide booking services for fishing, snorkelling and sailing tours. In front of these warung and cafes are colourful parasols and cushioned day beds.

White wine and bubbles: a Hungarian passion returns

BUDAPEST - In a Budapest workshop, a shelf lined with antique glass bottles emblazoned with pre-World War II-era producer labels and topped with metal and porcelain siphon heads testifies to the long history of Hungary’s soda-making trade.

“Drinking ‘froccs’ and soda water is part of Hungarians’ DNA; they smile when they see a siphon bottle,” says Laszlo Kiss, who works side-by-side with his father, also named Laszlo, in the workshop.

The small family business is enjoying a revival in demand for soda water as the centuries-old ‘froccs’ spritzer (pronounced “froetch”) -- made of chilled white or rose wine with a dash of carbonated water -- has become a top tipple in trendy bars and restaurants in Budapest.

“Froccs wasn’t that popular when we started seven years ago, but now most menus in Hungary offer it,” says Peter Ondrusek, 44, whose outdoor bar, named after the fizzy drink, teems with young Hungarians as well as tourists.

“Foreigners also like froccs once they get to know it, although we have to teach them how it’s pronounced,” he says.

Kiss bought the workshop on the ground floor of a quiet Budapest courtyard in 1994 but says soda has been made on the premises “for generations”.

“Soda tastes better than mass-produced mineral water that goes flat soon after you open the cap,” said the 69-year-old, during a break from blasting pressurised carbon dioxide into hundreds of bottles each day via a pedal-run machine.

The glass siphon bottle that dispenses soda water is a closed system with a trigger pull and a tube so “the last drop is as fizzy as the first,” Laszlo junior, 38, explained, his goggles and overalls splattered with water that escapes from the machine between fillings.

The tradition originated in 1826 when Hungarian inventor Anyos Jedlik designed a machine that enabled industrial-scale soda-water production.

His invention spawned thousands of factories that made up Hungary’s third-largest industry during the 19th century.

Demand soared as famous writers and artists eulogised the mixing of water and wine.

In a nationalistic 19th century poem, Mihaly Vorosmarty used “upward-rising... sparkling pearls” in wine as a metaphor for Hungarian independence ambitions.

The 20th-century novelist Sandor Marai wrote that froccs, “thick enough to encourage your imagination and tame enough not to damage your organs”, contained “the secret of long life”.

Until World War II, most Hungarian kitchen and restaurant tables sported siphon bottles, with soda water drunk both straight and mixed with wine.

But most of the larger factories were razed by wartime bombing and many plant owners of Jewish background killed during the Holocaust.

Nationalisation during the post-war communist era dealt another blow to a drinking tradition scorned as decadent, while globalisation has further hit the business since Hungary ditched communism in 1990.

“Most households and firms now only buy international soft drinks and mineral water in disposable plastic bottles,” says Istvan Szabo, head of the national soda water trade body. (afp)

One million protesters rally in Barcelona for Catalan independence

BARCELONA - Around one million people rallied in Barcelona on Tuesday, banging drums and blowing whistles in a show of support for Catalan independence nearly a year after a failed attempt to break away from Spain.

Wearing coral-red T-shirts and waving the red, yellow and blue Catalan separatist flag, a sea of protesters gathered for the rally on Catalonia’s “national day” which commemorates Barcelona’s fall to troops loyal to Spain’s King Philip V in 1714.

The annual “Diada” holiday has since 2012 been used to stage a massive rally calling for secession for the wealthy northeastern region that has its own distinct language.

But this year’s event had particular significance as a test of strength after a referendum last October 1 deemed illegal by the courts, and the Catalan parliament’s unilateral declaration of independence on October 27, all came to naught.

Demonstrators climbed on each other’s shoulders to form human towers, a Catalan tradition, while others carried yellow and black signs that read “Free Catalan political prisoners now”, a reference to Catalan separatist leaders in jail awaiting trial over last year’s independence bid.

“We are demanding our right to be a nation, in a democratic and peaceful way,” Roger Pujol, a 37-year-old olive oil producer, told AFP. At the start of the rally demonstrators knocked down a symbolic South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster on Monday ordered the mandatory evacuation of one million coastal residents. Schools in 26 of the state’s 46 counties were ordered closed from Tuesday.

Cooper, the governor of neighboring North Carolina, ordered an evacuation of the Outer Banks, barrier islands that are a popular tourist destination, and parts of coastal Dare County.

In Virginia, 245,000 coastal residents were ordered to evacuate including from the Eastern Shore, another popular beachfront destination.

In neighboring Maryland, Governor Larry Hogan said his state was readying for potentially “historic and catastrophic rainfall, life-threatening flooding, and high winds.”

On the five-level Saffir-Simpson hurricane wind scale Florence is a Category 4, meaning it is capable of

But Oriol Bartomeus, politics professor at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, said that “listening to the speeches of the separatist leaders, it seems like there is no plan.”

Opposition parties complain that separatists have transformed the “Diada” into a holiday which excludes the half of the Catalan population that does not favour independence. Ambassador ensures fulfillment of rights of two abducted Indonesian fishermen KUALA LUMPUR - Indonesian Ambassador to Malaysia Rusdi Kirana has requested the employer of the two Indonesian fishermen reportedly abducted in Semporna waters in the Malaysian state of Sabah to ensure that their rights are fulfilled.

“Our representatives in Tawau have helped us in ensuring that the rights of the abducted fishermen are fulfilled by their employer,” Kirana noted in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday.

Samsul Saguni, 40, and Usman Yunus, 35, who were working on a local fishing vessel in the Semporna waters in the Malaysian state of Sabah early Tuesday, were abducted by a group of people armed with M-16 rifles on early Tuesday.

Both fishermen are from West Sulawesi Province with passports issued in Palopo District of South Sulawesi Province.

Two other crew members survived the abduction attempt, as they had hidden themselves in one of the fishing boat`s compartments.

They later reported the incident to the police in Semporna.

Both the police and Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCOM) confirmed the abduction, which is the first of its kind in the past two years.

Spokesman for Sabah Police Omar Mammah confirmed the abduction, saying that the police are still investigating the motive behind the abduction. He noted that the two fishermen were sailing on a boat when the armed group kidnapped them and then took them to an unknown location.

The police believes the abduction case has to do with a kidnapfor-ransom (KFR) group but had yet to receive any request from any party for ransom.

Shortly upon receiving the report of abduction, the Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur immediately took action to save the two fishermen. Both the indications of the kidnappers or request for ransom still remain unknown.

“It is indeed an eye-opener for Indonesia and Malaysia to further increase security (cooperation). It is not easy to do so in such vast seas, but this (incident) should not happen again,” Kirana noted.

Currently, some three thousand Indonesian fishermen are working in Malaysia. In addition to the latest abduction of two fishermen, three other Indonesian fishermen are still held hostage to date. (ant)

HANOI — Indonesian President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo said Tuesday that his country and Vietnam have agreed to cooperate more in fighting illegal fishing and hope to boost two-way trade.

Speaking at a joint news briefing with his Vietnamese counterpart, Tran Dai Quang, Jokowi said they hope their annual trade will reach $10 billion by 2020 from $6.8 billion now.

“We are committed to continue to strengthen cooperation in trade which over the past three years has seen a relatively good trend,” he said through a translator.

Jokowi also asked Quang to remove trade barriers.

Indonesia has taken a tough stance against illegal fishing since Jokowi took office in 2014, destroying

hundreds of foreign fishing boats, mostly from Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia and Thailand.

The two leaders witnessed the signing of a declaration on voluntary cooperation in combatting illegal fishing.

“We have agreed to boost cooperation in fighting illegal fishing,” he said, adding he hopes the two sides will soon complete their negotiations on the demarcation of their exclusive economic zones.

Quang said the two countries are committed to enhancing military and security cooperation to deal with traditional and non-traditional challenges which were increasing in the region.

Vettel takes aim at Hamilton with Singapore sling

MADRID - Australian Rohan Dennis, of BMC, time-trialled to victory on stage 16 of the Tour of Spain on Tuesday as Britain’s Simon Yates increased his overall lead on rival Alejandro Valverde.

Former individual pursuit specialist Dennis clocked 37min 57sec to win the stage, held on a rolling, 32km course between Santillana del Mar and Torrelavega.

It was Dennis’s second stage win of the Vuelta, after he also dominated the opening 8km time trial in Malaga and the perfect way to end his race.

Dennis confirmed he would leave the race so he can rest and prepare for the team time trial and individual time trial at the world championships later this month.

“I’m heading home now,” Dennis said. “I’m just preparing for the time trial and team time trial at the worlds.”

Although Mitchelton rider Yates increased his lead over 2009 champion Valverde to 33sec, the Englishman will be poised for challenges over the final days of the race.

“I’m happy with my result, I know I extended my lead, so as far as I’m concerned it’s a very good ride,” Yates said.

“I was quite conservative at the beginning and then gave whatever

I had left so it was a good day, but we have a long way to go.”

While Yates finished 1:28 behind Dennis, red jersey rival Steven Kruijswijk moved back into contention for overall victory by finishing fourth, 51sec behind the Australian.

The Dutchman, who rides for Lotto-NL, has moved up to third overall at 52sec, ahead of Colombian duo Nairo Quintana (Movistar) and Miguel Angel Lopez (Astana).

Quintana conceded 1:19 to Kruijswijk and 42sec to Yates, meaning he drops to fourth overall, 1:15 adrift of the lead.

“I defended myself quite well, considering my abilities,” said Quintana, who excels on steep climbs.

“But I knew I was going to give up time. The mountain stages start tomorrow (Wednesday), it will be a key day so let’s see what happens.”

Dennis’s teammate Joseph Rosskopf and Team Sky’s Jonathan Castroviejo were second and third fastest respectively in the time trial, with each still 50 seconds behind the frontrunner.

SINGAPORE - Sebastian Vettel is under growing pressure to slash Lewis Hamilton’s championship lead at this weekend’s Singapore Grand Prix -- and erase Ferrari’s painful memories from last year in the process.

Mercedes normally struggle at the steamy Marina Bay Circuit, but in 2017 Hamilton won from fifth on a rain-soaked grid after a first-lap shunt scuppered both Ferraris and the Red Bull of Max Verstappen.

Ferrari and Vettel are still smarting after Hamilton won at Italy’s Monza 10 days ago, despite the Marinello team locking out the front row at their home grand prix.

Vettel’s first-lap spin after contact with Hamilton enabled the Englishman to extend his lead in the drivers’ standings to 30 points and the German vowed to bounce straight back in Singapore, where he has won a record four times.

“For sure it’s a disappointment right now,” Vettel said after the race. “But I am turning the page and focusing on Singapore -- I

like the place and I am happy to go there.”

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff warned this week that Ferrari and Red Bull would have the edge on Mercedes on the tight, twisting street circuit. But with rain forecast again this week, anything could happen.

“Singapore has features that we’ve struggled with in the past,” said Wolff.

“The short straights, the slow, tight corners and the bumpy surface all make the Marina Bay Street Circuit one of the trickiest for us.

“On paper, the track should favour the Ferraris, but the championship fight is so close that predictions are almost meaningless.”

ried about the gap to Hamilton growing to 30 points with seven races remaining, and is relishing the chance to pounce on one of his favourite tracks.

“I think we have the pace,” the four-time world champion said.

Red Bull have suffered a lean season but will fancy their chances of picking up a second 2018 win to follow Daniel Ricciardo’s triumph at Monaco’s similarly twisty street circuit.

Luis Enrique’s Spain routs Croatia 6-0 in Nations League

MADRID - Luis Enrique couldn’t have asked for a much better start as coach of Spain’s national team. Two matches, two convincing wins against top opponents in the UEFA Nations League.

Spain followed its gritty 2-1 win against England at Wembley Stadium last week with a 6-0 rout of World Cup runner-up Croatia on Tuesday, keeping Enrique perfect since taking over as La Roja’s coach.

It was the biggest defeat ever for Croatia, which was playing its first competitive game since reaching the World Cup final in Russia.

The victory left Spain comfortably ahead in Group 4 of the top-tiered League A in Europe’s newest soccer competition, in good position to reach the tournament’s final four in June.

In the other League A match on Tuesday, Belgium won 3-0 at Iceland in its Nations League debut.

England followed the loss to Spain with a 1-0 win in a friendly against Switzerland, which had routed Iceland 6-0 in the Nations League. Marcus Rashford scored England’s winner in Leicester.

The Nations League gives UEFA’s 55 member coun-

tries competitive games and eliminates often meaningless friendlies.

Luka Modric’s Croatia threatened early in the southeastern Spanish city of Elche, but Spain took control of the match by scoring three goals in 11 first-half minutes.

“They had chances in the beginning but after that we were clearly superior,” Enrique said. “It’s difficult to find anything to criticize after a match played at this level. Our attitude has been commendable.”

Saul Niguez, who is becoming an undisputable starter in Enrique’s team, headed in a cross by Dani Carvajal in the 24th minute, then Marco Asensio hit two remarkable longrange shots in the 33rd and 35th to give La Roja a comfortable lead before halftime. His second strike bounced off the post and the back of goalkeeper Lovre Kalinic, who was awarded an own goal.

Asensio, who was not among the starters against England, also set up Rodrigo’s goal early in the second half with a perfect through ball behind the defense.

Sergio Ramos, one of the remaining members of Spain’s golden generation, added the fifth goal with a header off a corner kick in the 57th minute, and Isco closed the scoring

Croatia, which lost the World Cup final to France, fell apart after defender Sime Vrsaljko had to be substituted due to an injury just minutes before Spain’s first goal.

“We were very good in the first 20 minutes, we had three clear chances, but after that and Vrsaljko’s injury, we vanished from the pitch,” Croatia coach Zlatko Dalic said. “We were not even a shadow of the team from before.”

Croatia’s biggest defeat had been a 5-1 away loss against England at Wembley in 2009.

The Croats were making their Nations League debut after playing European champion Portugal to a 1-1 draw in a friendly last week.

Enrique took over Spain after the team’s elimination against Russia in the round of 16 of the World Cup. Spain was coached by Fernando Hierro in Russia after Julen Lopetegui was fired two days before the tournament.

Asensio was one of the few changes Enrique made to the team that beat England on Saturday. The former Barcelona coach also added defender Jose Luis Gaya and midfielder Dani Ceballos to the starting lineup. They replaced Marcos Alonso, Thiago Alcantara and Iago Aspas.

Just like it did against England, Spain was aggressive without the ball on Tuesday, pressing high and playing a more direct game that takes the focus away from short passes, something that has become a characteristic of Enrique’s team.

Belgium earned a comfortable win over Iceland thanks to a pair of goals by Romelu Lukaku and one from Eden Hazard.

Lukaku and Hazard, whose goal came off a penalty kick, were two of Belgium’s top players in its third-place campaign at the World Cup. Belgium had defeated Scotland 4-0 in a friendly last week in Glasgow.

Liverpool’s Keita admits it will take time to be at his best

Liverpool midfielder Naby Keita says it will take time to justify the £52 million ($63 million) fee the club paid for the Guinea international.

The 23-year-old -- who is expected to start this weekend’s match with Tottenham Hotspur despite being left on the bench for Liverpool’s previous clash with Leicester City -- told the Liverpool club magazine that having come from the Bundesliga it is only normal that it is taking him him time

to acclimatise to the Premier League.

Keita was snapped up by Liverpool last year from RB Leipzig but with the condition he remained with the German side until this season.

“I’ve been told by many people that a lot of overseas players come into the Premier League and they take time to integrate, depending on the circumstances,” he said.

“So playing in the Premier League can be difficult, but I am very motivated to play

here, not just for myself and my teammates, but for the club.

“Everybody around me has been very supportive towards me so I am certainly giving everything I can to get settled into the team quickly.”

Keita, who has a lot of added pressure on him as he is the most expensive midfielder ever signed by the club, says his attitude has always been to push to improve no matter the plaudits he receives for his

performances.

“I’m the kind of person who thinks that if I score eight goals in one season my objective must be to score nine goals in the following season,” he said. “That’s the kind of mentality I have.

“The Premier League is different to other leagues where I have played and everybody knows it is very tough, but I will do my best to beat my own personal records -– I’m very motivated.” (afp)

Record result for European soccer clubs with 1st-time profit

GENEVA — In a record result for European soccer, top-tier clubs combined to make a first-time profit of 600 million euros ($694 million) last year with spending on player transfers included.

UEFA research — involving 711 clubs’ financial accounts ending in 2017 — showed they turned around a 300-million euro loss ($347 million) the previous year, European soccer’s governing body said Sunday.

The clubs’ total revenue of 20.1 billion euros ($23.2 billion) extended a trend of annual rises at around 10 percent.

UEFA said 27 of 54 top-tier divisions in its member countries were profitable. That’s up from eight in 2011 when UEFA began monitoring accounts of all clubs qualifying to enter the Champions League and Europa League.

“Thanks to Financial Fair Play, European football is healthier than ever before,” UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin said in a statement.

“Financial Fair Play has provided the platform for clubs to control their costs and pay their debts,” Ceferin said. “This success, this new stability is a result of the work done by UEFA and its member associations in introducing licensing systems including cost

control mechanisms which have yielded much improved financial discipline.”

The combined profit was made despite many millions of dollars leaving the European soccer system as clubs bought players from outside the continent.

UEFA said the operating profit of all clubs — before player transfers and financing were taken into account — was a collective 1.4 billion euros ($1.62 billion).

Booming values of broadcasting rights have largely driven the rising revenues, including deals made around the world for the Champions League and the popularity of the English Premier League and Spain’s La Liga.

For the next three years, UEFA will pay 30 percent increased prize money in its two club competitions.

The 32 Champions League teams this season will share 1.95 billion euros ($2.25 billion) from UEFA. UEFA noted that 18 of 20 Premier League clubs were profitable for their financial year ending June 2017, with 638 million euros ($737 million) total increase in revenue from television.

Though perceived as a highsalary league, UEFA said the English top division had wages under tighter control. Clubs paid players 56 percent of their total revenue in

2017 compared to 71 percent four years earlier.

Italy’s Serie A, which can now expect higher revenue after Juventus signed Cristiano Ronaldo, is also trending the right way. The 20 clubs showed a collective profit after tax of 3.7 percent due to increased transfer income.

Middle-ranking leagues in Portugal and the Netherlands made a profit after tax of at least 10 percent due to selling players to bigger leagues, UEFA said.

Still, UEFA has introduced a new check on rising spending, in part because of AC Milan’s 200plus million euros transfer splurge one year ago. Milan had to win an appeal against expulsion from this season’s Europa League and now faces a lesser UEFA sanction in an ongoing case.

Clubs whose net spending on players exceeds 100 million euros, or seem to have too much debt, must show UEFA a plan to balance its books.

“The new regulations will further allow UEFA to act more swiftly and anticipate problems before they become too big,” Ceferin said.

Around 10 clubs have been contacted by UEFA in recent months, though this includes some English clubs which are not seen as a risk. (ap)

Czech Republic coach Jarolim fired after 5-1 loss to Russia

PRAGUE — Karel Jarolim has been fired as coach of the Czech Republic’s national team following a 5-1 loss to Russia in an international friendly.

Jarolim took over in 2016 after the Czechs failed to advance from the group stage of the European Championship in France.

Czech soccer federation chairman Martin Malik says “the situation is unsustainable and we had to act immediately.” No replacement has yet been named.

The 62-year-old Jarolim was under pressure after his team didn’t qualify for this year’s World Cup in Russia, and it increased after a 2-1 home loss to Ukraine in the UEFA Nations League on Thursday.

With Jarolim in charge, the national team experienced its two biggest defeats since the country was created in 1993 after the split of Czechoslovakia. Besides the loss to Russia on Monday, the other one was a 4-0 loss to Australia in a friendly in June. (ap)

Luis Enrique’s Spain routs Croatia 6-0 in Nations League

MADRID - Luis Enrique couldn’t have asked for a much better start as coach of Spain’s national team. Two matches, two convincing wins against top opponents in the UEFA Nations League.

Spain followed its gritty 2-1 win against England at Wembley Stadium last week with a 6-0 rout of World Cup runner-up Croatia on Tuesday, keeping Enrique perfect since taking over as La Roja’s coach.

It was the biggest defeat ever for Croatia, which was playing its first competitive game since reaching the World Cup final in Russia.

The victory left Spain comfortably ahead in Group 4 of the top-tiered League A in Europe’s newest soccer competition, in good position to reach the tournament’s final four in June.

In the other League A match on Tuesday, Belgium won 3-0 at Iceland in its Nations League debut.

England followed the loss to Spain with a 1-0 win in a friendly against Switzerland, which had routed Iceland 6-0 in the Nations League. Marcus Rashford scored England’s winner in Leicester.

tries competitive games and eliminates often meaningless friendlies.

Luka Modric’s Croatia threatened early in the southeastern Spanish city of Elche, but Spain took control of the match by scoring three goals in 11 first-half minutes.

“They had chances in the beginning but after that we were clearly superior,” Enrique said. “It’s difficult to find anything to criticize after a match played at this level. Our attitude has been commendable.”

Saul Niguez, who is becoming an undisputable starter in Enrique’s team, headed in a cross by Dani Carvajal in the 24th minute, then Marco Asensio hit two remarkable longrange shots in the 33rd and 35th to give La Roja a comfortable lead before halftime. His second strike bounced off the post and the back of goalkeeper Lovre Kalinic, who was awarded an own goal.

Asensio, who was not among the starters against England, also set up Rodrigo’s goal early in the second half with a perfect through ball behind the defense.

Sergio Ramos, one of the remaining members of Spain’s golden generation, added the fifth goal with a header off a corner kick in the 57th minute, and Isco closed the scoring

in the 70th after another set up by Asensio.

Croatia, which lost the World Cup final to France, fell apart after defender Sime Vrsaljko had to be substituted due to an injury just minutes before Spain’s first goal.

“We were very good in the first 20 minutes, we had three clear chances, but after that and Vrsaljko’s injury, we vanished from the pitch,” Croatia coach Zlatko Dalic said. “We were not even a shadow of the team from before.”

Croatia’s biggest defeat had been a 5-1 away loss against England at Wembley in 2009.

The Croats were making their Nations League debut after playing European champion Portugal to a 1-1 draw in a friendly last week.

Enrique took over Spain after the team’s elimination against Russia in the round of 16 of the World Cup. Spain was coached by Fernando Hierro in Russia after Julen Lopetegui was fired two days before the tournament.

Asensio was one of the few changes Enrique made to the team that beat England on Saturday. The former Barcelona coach also added defender Jose Luis Gaya and midfielder Dani Ceballos to the starting lineup. They replaced Marcos Alonso, Thiago Alcantara and Iago Aspas.

Just like it did against England, Spain was aggressive without the ball on Tuesday, pressing high and playing a more direct game that takes the focus away from short passes, something that has become a characteristic of Enrique’s team.

Vettel takes aim at Hamilton with Singapore sling

MADRID - Australian Rohan Dennis, of BMC, time-trialled to victory on stage 16 of the Tour of Spain on Tuesday as Britain’s Simon Yates increased his overall lead on rival Alejandro Valverde.

Former individual pursuit specialist Dennis clocked 37min 57sec to win the stage, held on a rolling, 32km course between Santillana del Mar and Torrelavega.

It was Dennis’s second stage win of the Vuelta, after he also dominated the opening 8km time trial in Malaga and the perfect way to end his race.

Dennis confirmed he would leave the race so he can rest and prepare for the team time trial and individual time trial at the world championships later this month.

“I’m heading home now,” Dennis said. “I’m just preparing for the time trial and team time trial at the worlds.”

Although Mitchelton rider Yates increased his lead over 2009 champion Valverde to 33sec, the Englishman will be poised for challenges over the final days of the race.

“I’m happy with my result, I know I extended my lead, so as far as I’m concerned it’s a very good ride,” Yates said.

“I was quite conservative at the beginning and then gave whatever

I had left so it was a good day, but we have a long way to go.”

While Yates finished 1:28 behind Dennis, red jersey rival Steven Kruijswijk moved back into contention for overall victory by finishing fourth, 51sec behind the Australian.

The Dutchman, who rides for Lotto-NL, has moved up to third overall at 52sec, ahead of Colombian duo Nairo Quintana (Movistar) and Miguel Angel Lopez (Astana).

Quintana conceded 1:19 to Kruijswijk and 42sec to Yates, meaning he drops to fourth overall, 1:15 adrift of the lead.

“I defended myself quite well, considering my abilities,” said Quintana, who excels on steep climbs.

“But I knew I was going to give up time. The mountain stages start tomorrow (Wednesday), it will be a key day so let’s see what happens.”

Dennis’s teammate Joseph Rosskopf and Team Sky’s Jonathan Castroviejo were second and third fastest respectively in the time trial, with each still 50 seconds behind the frontrunner.

SINGAPORE - Sebastian Vettel is under growing pressure to slash Lewis Hamilton’s championship lead at this weekend’s Singapore Grand Prix -- and erase Ferrari’s painful memories from last year in the process.

Mercedes normally struggle at the steamy Marina Bay Circuit, but in 2017 Hamilton won from fifth on a rain-soaked grid after a first-lap shunt scuppered both Ferraris and the Red Bull of Max Verstappen.

Ferrari and Vettel are still smarting after Hamilton won at Italy’s Monza 10 days ago, despite the Marinello team locking out the front row at their home grand prix.

Vettel’s first-lap spin after contact with Hamilton enabled the Englishman to extend his lead in the drivers’ standings to 30 points and the German vowed to bounce straight back in Singapore, where he has won a record four times.

“For sure it’s a disappointment right now,” Vettel said after the race. “But I am turning the page and focusing on Singapore -- I

like the place and I am happy to go there.”

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff warned this week that Ferrari and Red Bull would have the edge on Mercedes on the tight, twisting street circuit. But with rain forecast again this week, anything could happen.

“Singapore has features that we’ve struggled with in the past,” said Wolff.

“The short straights, the slow, tight corners and the bumpy surface all make the Marina Bay Street Circuit one of the trickiest for us.

“On paper, the track should favour the Ferraris, but the championship fight is so close that predictions are almost meaningless.”

- ‘Win the damn thing’ Vettel said he was not wor-

ried about the gap to Hamilton growing to 30 points with seven races remaining, and is relishing the chance to pounce on one of his favourite tracks.

“I think we have the pace,” the four-time world champion said.

“The points sound a lot, but actually it doesn’t take a long time to get them down.”

Red Bull have suffered a lean season but will fancy their chances of picking up a second 2018 win to follow Daniel Ricciardo’s triumph at Monaco’s similarly twisty street circuit.

The Austrian team have not won in hot, humid Singapore since 2013, when Vettel was behind the wheel, but Ricciardo has remarkably finished second in each of the past three years. (afp)

White wine and bubbles: a Hungarian passion returns

BUDAPEST - In a Budapest workshop, a shelf lined with antique glass bottles emblazoned with pre-World War II-era producer labels and topped with metal and porcelain siphon heads testifies to the long history of Hungary’s soda-making trade.

“Drinking ‘froccs’ and soda water is part of Hungarians’ DNA; they smile when they see a siphon bottle,” says Laszlo Kiss, who works side-by-side with his father, also named Laszlo, in the workshop.

The small family business is enjoying a revival in demand for soda water as the centuries-old ‘froccs’ spritzer (pronounced “froetch”) -- made of chilled white or rose wine with a dash of carbonated water -- has become a top tipple in trendy bars and restaurants in Budapest.

“Froccs wasn’t that popular when we started seven years ago, but now most menus in Hungary offer it,” says Peter Ondrusek, 44, whose outdoor bar, named after the fizzy drink, teems with young Hungarians as well as tourists.

“Foreigners also like froccs once they get to know it, although we have to teach them how it’s pronounced,” he says.

Kiss bought the workshop on the ground floor of a quiet Budapest courtyard in 1994 but says soda has been made on the premises “for generations”.

The tradition originated in 1826 when Hungarian inventor Anyos Jedlik designed a machine that enabled industrial-scale soda-water production.

His invention spawned thousands of factories that made up Hungary’s third-largest industry during the 19th century.

Demand soared as famous writers and artists eulogised the mixing of water and wine.

In a nationalistic 19th century poem, Mihaly Vorosmarty used “upward-rising... sparkling pearls” in wine as a metaphor for Hungarian independence ambitions.

The 20th-century novelist Sandor Marai wrote that froccs, “thick enough to encourage your imagination and tame enough not to damage your organs”, contained “the secret of long life”.

Until World War II, most Hungarian kitchen and restaurant tables sported siphon bottles, with soda water drunk both straight and mixed with wine.

But most of the larger factories were razed by wartime bombing and many plant owners of Jewish background killed during the Holocaust.

Nationalisation during the post-war communist era dealt another blow to a drinking tradition scorned as decadent, while globalisation has further hit the business since Hungary ditched communism in 1990.

One million protesters rally in Barcelona for Catalan independence

BARCELONA - Around one million people rallied in Barcelona on Tuesday, banging drums and blowing whistles in a show of support for Catalan independence nearly a year after a failed attempt to break away from Spain.

Wearing coral-red T-shirts and waving the red, yellow and blue Catalan separatist flag, a sea of protesters gathered for the rally on Catalonia’s “national day” which commemorates Barcelona’s fall to troops loyal to Spain’s King Philip V in 1714.

The annual “Diada” holiday has since 2012 been used to stage a massive rally calling for secession for the wealthy northeastern region that has its own distinct language.

But this year’s event had particular significance as a test of strength after a referendum last October 1 deemed illegal by the courts, and the Catalan parliament’s unilateral declaration of independence on October 27, all came to naught.

Demonstrators climbed on each other’s shoulders to form human towers, a Catalan tradition, while others carried yellow and black signs that read “Free Catalan political prisoners now”, a reference to Catalan separatist leaders in jail awaiting trial over last year’s independence bid.

“We are demanding our right to be a nation, in a democratic and peaceful way,” Roger Pujol, a 37-year-old olive oil producer, told AFP. At the start of the rally demonstrators knocked down a symbolic South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster on Monday ordered the mandatory evacuation of one million coastal residents. Schools in 26 of the state’s 46 counties were ordered closed from Tuesday.

Cooper, the governor of neighboring North Carolina, ordered an evacuation of the Outer Banks, barrier islands that are a popular tourist destination, and parts of coastal Dare County.

In Virginia, 245,000 coastal residents were ordered to evacuate including from the Eastern Shore, another popular beachfront destination.

In neighboring Maryland, Governor Larry Hogan said his state was readying for potentially “historic and catastrophic rainfall, life-threatening flooding, and high winds.”

Ambassador ensures fulfillment of rights of two abducted Indonesian fishermen KUALA LUMPUR - Indonesian Ambassador to Malaysia Rusdi Kirana has requested the employer of the two Indonesian fishermen reportedly abducted in Semporna waters in the Malaysian state of Sabah to ensure that their rights are fulfilled.

“Our representatives in Tawau have helped us in ensuring that the rights of the abducted fishermen are fulfilled by their employer,” Kirana noted in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday.

Samsul Saguni, 40, and Usman Yunus, 35, who were working on a local fishing vessel in the Semporna waters in the Malaysian state of Sabah early Tuesday, were abducted by a group of people armed with M-16 rifles on early Tuesday.

Both fishermen are from West Sulawesi Province with passports issued in Palopo District of South Sulawesi Province.

Two other crew members survived the abduction attempt, as they had hidden themselves in one of the fishing boat`s compartments.

They later reported the incident to the police in Semporna.

Both the police and Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCOM) confirmed the abduction, which is the first of its kind in the past two years.

Spokesman for Sabah Police Omar Mammah confirmed the abduction, saying that the police are still investigating the motive behind the abduction. He noted that the two fishermen were sailing on a boat when the armed group kidnapped them and then took them to an unknown location.

The police believes the abduction case has to do with a kidnapfor-ransom (KFR) group but had yet to receive any request from any party for ransom.

Shortly upon receiving the report of abduction, the Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur immediately took action to save the two fishermen. Both the indications of the kidnappers or request for ransom still remain unknown.

“It is indeed an eye-opener for Indonesia and Malaysia to further increase security (cooperation). It is not easy to do so in such vast seas, but this (incident) should not happen again,” Kirana noted.

Currently, some three thousand Indonesian fishermen are working in Malaysia. In addition to the latest abduction of two fishermen, three other Indonesian fishermen are still held hostage to date. (ant)

Vietnam, Indonesia vow to fight illegal fishing, boost trade

HANOI — Indonesian President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo said Tuesday that his country and Vietnam have agreed to cooperate more in fighting illegal fishing and hope to boost two-way trade.

Speaking at a joint news briefing with his Vietnamese counterpart, Tran Dai Quang, Jokowi said they hope their annual trade will reach $10 billion by 2020 from $6.8 billion now.

“We are committed to continue to strengthen cooperation in trade which over the past three years has seen a relatively good trend,” he said through a translator.

Jokowi also asked Quang to remove trade barriers.

Indonesia has taken a tough stance against illegal fishing since Jokowi took office in 2014, destroying

hundreds of foreign fishing boats, mostly from Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia and Thailand.

The two leaders witnessed the signing of a declaration on voluntary cooperation in combatting illegal fishing.

“We have agreed to boost cooperation in fighting illegal fishing,” he said, adding he hopes the two sides will soon complete their negotiations on the demarcation of their exclusive economic zones.

Quang said the two countries are committed to enhancing military and security cooperation to deal with traditional and non-traditional challenges which were increasing in the region.

BUSINESS Months of deadly unrest devastate Nicaragua’s economy

LEON - Two days after protests began in Nicaragua in April, a foreign auto components company was meeting at a hotel in the city of Leon when smoke from a burning university building just a block away billowed above the hotel’s colonnaded courtyard.

The visitors quickly cut short their event and began changing their travel plans to exit Nicaragua. Within three months, the El Convento hotel itself was forced to close for lack of business, as a sister hotel in the same city had in June.

Nicaragua’s economy has been devastated by the nearly five months of unrest sparked by cuts to social security benefits that quickly evolved into calls for President Daniel Ortega to step down.

In June, the country’s economic activity was down 12.1 percent compared to a year earlier, according to the central bank. Economists estimate 200,000 jobs have been shed, including as many as 70,000 in the tourism sector, which has become Nicaragua’s top source of foreign currency in the past two years.

Revenue at hotels and restaurants plunged 45 percent in June compared to 2017, according to Nicaragua’s central bank. Similarly, construction suffered a 35 percent drop and retail 27 percent. Some $900 million in deposits fled Nicaragua’s banks. They responded by tightening their lending to preserve liquidity, thus also contributed to the economic slowdown.

Nicaraguan Union of Agricultural Producers says more than 12,000 acres of private land have been occupied by government supporters in what business leaders have called confiscations in revenge for their support of the protesters.

The producers say 91 percent of the land occupied by squatters was used for farming and livestock.

Victor Hugo Sevilla, the general manager of both Leon hotels, continues checking email, but said “I haven’t gotten any requests from foreigners for reservations. We have received five, maybe eight, rate inquiries from domestic (travelers), but no firm reservations.”

Leon, Nicaragua’s second-largest city, was among the places where protests and roadblocks were most intense. From the beginning, those protests were met with vio-

lence from riot police and civilian government supporters. In July, they violently cleared the roadblocks and ran protesting students off occupied university campuses.

More than 300 people have been killed in the unrest, according to human rights groups. The government calls the protesters “terrorists” and says it defeated an attempt to drive Ortega from office that was sponsored by the U.S. government and domestic opposition, including some in the private sector.

Ortega conceded this month that the roadblocks and unrest have cost the country jobs. In an interview with Spanish news agency EFE, he said domestic tourism was starting to return, but “where there has been more of a problem is in attracting international tourism, because this situation tends to repel the tourists.”

A major factor has been that the countries that send Nicaragua’s big-spending foreign tourists, including the U.S., Canada, Spain and England, issued travel warnings urging their citizens to avoid travel to Nicaragua.

Major airlines such as American and United cut their flights to Managua from three per day to one. Spirit, Delta and other carriers trimmed their flights as well, said Jose Adan Aguerri, president of the Superior Council for Private Enterprise. The council, which is Nicaragua’s main business chamber, joined the call for a national strike Sept. 7. The Civic Alliance, formed to represent a broad swath of Nicaraguan society in a stalled dialogue with the government, said the strike aimed to push the government back to dialogue and to protest the arrest of alliance members and other political prisoners.

The country’s primary tourist destinations like the colonial gem Granada and the Pacific coast surfer paradise San Juan del Sur began feeling the consequences of the unrest almost immediately. Hotels and restaurants cut back hours, then days and eventually closed completely.

The relationship was criticized by some as a tacit agreement to keep the country’s business elites out of politics. In an interview in July with Venezuela’s Telesur network, Ortega said his understanding with Nicaragua’s private sector had been strictly economic and not political. In April, however, the country’s business interests, caught off guard by the social security system changes, quickly joined the opposition. As the social and political crisis deepened, the private sector became increasingly outspoken in calling for Ortega to move up elections.

Mario Arana, director of the Nicaragua Association of Producers and Exporters and a former head of the central bank, said the private sector decided to get more involved when student protesters were killed.

“When there was an overreac-

tion here to a civil, peaceful protest by the students, where people began to lose their lives, society suffered a social explosion where the private sector aligned with the people,” he said. “The private sector is committed to trying to find a negotiated exit from the crisis.”

Juan Sebastian Chamorro, who leads the Nicaraguan Foundation for Economic and Social Development, said the government has shown signs that it recognizes the severity of the economic impact. It has issued new debt, adjusted rules to tighten the selling of dollars and cut public spending as it forecasts a 10 percent drop in tax revenue.

Whether any of that will be enough to stop the economy’s slide is doubtful unless it’s accompanied by a political solution that restores stability, experts said.

For years Leon had been at best a day trip for foreign tourists beginning to explore better-known Granada or San Juan del Sur. But the city had worked hard to get attention and Art Collection Hotels had bet on its prospects by opening its second hotel, La Recoleccion, in 2017.

“We had high expectations for this year,” said Sevilla, the manager of the closed hotels.

He had 113 employees between the two properties. They were able to suspend 67, which will enable them to come back without losing any benefits of seniority, but the rest were laid off. He has remained in touch with some of the workers. Those still around are taking whatever work they can find, but he estimated at least half left the country, with most of those seeking tourism sector jobs in Costa Rica.

The hotels have 190 reservations for November — the start of the high season — but that’s less than half what they had in November last year. Still, he hopes they can start working their way back again in October. Even if that works out, he predicts a slow climb back to normalcy. Cafes and shops selling handicrafts around Leon’s historic center were open this week, but a number of hotels and hostels in the area were shuttered.

“I think it will take at least 12 months, maybe more, to be able to restart the tourism engine,” he said. (ap)

Barong Bangkung Street Show

As a tradition, the Hindu community in Bali celebrates Galungan and Kuningan by delivering oblations accompanied with art activities. It also happens to the celebration of Galungan (Feb. 10) and Kuningan (Feb. 20), where during the feast the barong bangkung or barong bangkal troupe will definitely do ngelawang or street show.

Barong bangkal or barong bangkung is a large enough and old pig considered a mythical animal having a mystical power. Attires of the barong are made of black and white velvet.

However, in general, the attires are not pretentious like that of other types of barong.

In every show, the barong bangkung is also equipped with trinkets of ate leaves and the dancers are wearing checkered trousers and rattles tied on legs, so that when moving they will generate rattling sound. Barong bangkal is carried by two dancers and the performances are held in the streets and around the village.

With the presence of barong show, villagers will feel they have been protected by deities marked by the arrival of barong bangkal or barong bangkung. The show is accompanied with batel bebarongan gamelan music consisting of drums, tawa-tawa, kelenang, kelenong, cymbals and kempur.

The word ngelawang is derived from the word lawang meaning ‘door,’ a term in the Balinese language that means a gallivanting show from one house to another or from one village to another. This gallivanting show with diverse Balinese artistic traditions is performed by art troupe.

Allegedly this traditional show sources from a Hindu mythology, namely Shiva Tattva. Once upon a time Lord Shiva and Goddess Uma are making love in improper place and time, so that harmony shakes. As a result, it brings in misery for mankind and other living beings.

Pasir Putih Beach in East Bali is one of the island’s ‘hidden’ beaches. Despite its remote location, this beach gained popularity being referred to by various nicknames, such as Perasi Beach referring to its village where it is located, including ‘White Sand Beach’, ‘Virgin Beach’ and simply, ‘Hidden Beach’. The secluded coast of Pasir Putih Beach stretches between two hills between the villages of Bugbug and Perasi, both located in the Karangasem regency and approximately 4.5km east of the main hub of Candidasa.

Getting to Pasir Putih Beach is quite an adventurous ride. From the main area of Candidasa, continue onto the Jalan Raya CandidasaBugbug main road until you arrive at the neighbourhood of Perasi village.

Following its growing popularity, several locally-run restaurants and cafes (better referred to as traditional ‘warung’) can be seen lining the eastern side of Pasir Putih Beach near the parking area.

Among the dozen are Warung Maria, Warung Sederhana, Warung Kokak, Virgin Cafe, Warung Sunrise, Warung Gusti & Leo, Warung Budi Ayu, and Relax Cafe.

Several others also provide booking services for fishing, snorkelling and sailing tours. In front of these warung and cafes are colourful parasols and cushioned day beds.

At the far western end, traditional jukung outriggers of the fishermen from Perasi and Bugbug can be seen parked in rows, against a backdrop of the rock face known as Bukit Penggiang (the opposite is Bukit Apem). (IBP/net)

Marine animal carcasses stranded on Yeh Kuning and Perancak Beach

NEGARA - Carcasses of decayed marine animals were found stranded on Yeh Kuning Beach and Perancak Beach on Tuesday (Sep. 9). On Perancak Beach, residents found the wreckage of bottlenose dolphin getting stranded near the Kurma Asih turtle breeding site.

The carcass of dolphin is known to have a length of 85 cm and a diameter of 48 cm. By residents that discovered, the dolphin carcass was buried on the beach.

Coordinator of the Kurma Asih Sea Turtle Conservation Group (KPP) of Perancak, I Wayan Anom Astika Jaya, said the dolphin carcass was found by residents around 8:00. After being checked, no injuries were found on the body.

The dolphin belongs to the bottle nose type. Two months ago, similar carcasses of marine animals were also found around the area.

Other than on Perancak Beach, animal carcasses were also found by residents on Yeh Kuning Beach on Monday morning. However, the exact species is not known because the condition has been destroyed.

The marine animal found on Yeh Kuning Beach is quite large, more than two meters long. Although it has perished, on the part suspected

to be the back looked to have more than four protruding fins as well as protruding teeth in the mouth and remain intact. Meanwhile, the belly of the animal suspected of being a fish seemed to have been unraveled.

One of the residents finding the carcass, Kade Andini, 35, claimed to accidentally walk along the beach at that time. About half a kilometer from Segara Temple of Yeh Kuning, she saw a mound originally thought to be coral. But after having a closer look at it, the mound moved to follow the waves.

When getting closer, the smell was getting prominent, even though the wind was fast enough. “In fact, it is fish carcass, sizing quite large. If it is a shark or whale, why it has many fins on the back,” he said. Due to being in rotten condition, the fish carcass was left to be dragged back by sea current.

The Head of the Mt. Agung Emergency Response Team at the Rendang Monitoring Post, Isyak, stated on Sunday (Sep. 9) that since August the volcanic activities of Mount Agung had experienced a significant decline. It looks a little quieter than the previous phase when the eruption threw flare.

However, to date the seismographs are still recording volcanic earthquakes that trigger gusts.

“The activity of Mount Agung indeed begins to decrease slightly.

No more eruptions have occurred since last month. The Lombok

earthquake some time ago slightly affected the activities of Mount Agung where the amount of blowing occurrence slightly increased.

White gusts still occurred with a maximum height of 300 meters dominated by water vapor. Within a month, the gusts occurred for 30 times. So, it averagely happened for 4-5 times a day,” he said.

When asked if there will be a decline in the status to the alert level following the decline of this activity, Isyak asserted, that until now the status remains at level III (watch). He explained that to reduce the status, his agency is still monitoring the development and the next condition of the Mount Agung.

If indeed in terms of seismicity it actually decreases constantly, and in terms of deformation and other components that support for this decline, there will be further coordination for evaluation whether the status will be lowered or not.

“So far, there are still hot spots in the body of Mount Agung. Sometimes there are also visible fires at the top. In essence, we continue to monitor the development of Mount Agung all the times,” said Isyak. (kmb41)

Melbourne’s Herald Sun cartoonist Mark Knight’s caricature of Williams throwing a tantrum at the US Open was originally printed on Monday, attracting widespread condemnation from across the world.

Under the front-page headline “WELCOME TO PC WORLD”, the newspaper wrote Wednesday that “if the self-appointed censors of Mark Knight get their way on his Serena Williams cartoon, our new politically correct life will be very dull indeed”.

The cover included caricatures of other Australian and foreign political leaders drawn by Knight.

The veteran cartoonist added Wednesday he had suspended his Twitter account to protect his family and friends.

Prior to disabling his account, his tweet of the cartoon had attracted more than 22,000 comments, most of them critical.

Knight labelled the outcry against his cartoon as a sign that the “world has just gone crazy”.

“I drew this cartoon Sunday night after seeing the US Open final, and seeing the world’s best tennis player have a tantrum and thought that was interesting,” he said in quotes published on the News Corp Australia paper’s website Wednesday.

“The cartoon about Serena is about her poor behaviour on the day, not about race.”

The caricature has also sparked renewed debate in Australia about racist and sexist discourse in the highly multicultural nation.

“I thought they went over the top. The depiction of Serena was pretty vile,” Melbourne commuter Louise Rodbourn told AFP, echoing the mood of many city workers Wednesday.

“I think it’s disgusting. I find it really, a little offensive,” added fellow Melbourne resident Nowal Kahsai. But some said the controversy had gone too far.

“She’s a fantastic tennis player and we should all see past that,” commuter Donna Weitacher said.

“This is his (Knight’s) job, isn’t it? This is what he does for a living and we’ve all appreciated what he’s done over the years in all different cartoons. Some of them very, very funny.”

“The Osaka region which was hit by the typhoon is about 10.9 percent of Japan’s GDP. It’s slightly larger than Belgium and about the same as Sweden,” noted Kohei Iwahara, economist at Natixis Japan Securities.

“You have the ports affected, Kansai Airport malfunctioning and the question is: how long is it going to last?” asked the expert.

One week after Typhoon Jebi ravaged western Japan, the airport is still not fully functional, with power not yet completely restored and access via the damaged bridge still not back to normal.

It has operated fewer than 100 flights in total since last Tuesday’s typhoon, a far cry from the 400 per day it usually runs in its round-theclock operation.

Kansai airport has been beset by setbacks from the beginning and has spent vast amounts on protection from the elements -- such as high walls and waterproof barriers -- which proved of limited value

when the typhoon struck.

According to Mizuho Securities, the typhoon and an earthquake in the more rural island of Hokkaido has increased the danger of a cut in Japan’s GDP, which came in at 0.7 percent on-quarter in April-June.

The disasters cut supply lines and could result in a 0.2-percentage point dip in factory output in the third quarter, Mizuho said.

The 6.6-magnitude Hokkaido quake knocked out the main thermal power plant, causing a total blackout for the three million households on the island and havoc for logistics. The plant will not be fully up and running until at least November. Car giant Toyota for example was forced to stop production in the whole country because it was not being supplied with parts from its factory in Hokkaido.

- ‘The damage is severe’ Yoshihisa Inada, from the Osaka-based Asia Pacific Institute of Research, noted that more than one in three of Japan’s 28 million foreign tourists passed through Kansai last year, en route to the popular destinations of Kyoto and Nara.

“Companies can choose alternative airports (for exports) but the problem is tourism,” he told AFP. “If the situation at the airport continues for one month, the tourists can’t come and the value added will disappear, so how do I make money?

The damage is severe,” he said.

Typhoon Jebi was just the latest in a series of natural disasters to afflict western Japan -- after a deadly earthquake in Osaka in June and flooding in July that killed more than 200. These events did spark “some cancellations and a negative impact on demand in the South Korean and Hong Kong market”, admitted Ryoko Hasegawa from the Japan National Tourism Organisation. But Iwahara from Natixis said any effect on tourism should not last too long.

“Given the past record in Japan, earthquakes and typhoons are part of everyday life. So the impact should be short-lived and overcome in a month or two,” he told AFP. Inada agreed, saying that foreign visitors should realise that Japan is “very resilient”.

Teens would rather text than talk to you, survey finds

CALIFORNIA - Most American teenagers are constantly using social media, and half admit that it distracts them from looking up and talking to people right in front of them, a new survey shows.

More teens now say they prefer texting to talking to other people in person, and they admit smartphone apps are waking them up at night and distracting them from homework, the survey by Common Sense Media shows.

No surprises there to anyone who knows a teenager, but the survey also shows that teens are very much aware of the pitfalls of social media use. They suspect that social media companies are trying to manipulate them, and they deny that their constant use of Instagram, Snapchat and other apps is making them lonely.

“Social media has transformed adolescence and the lives of millions and millions of teens,” said Jim Steyer, CEO and founder of Common Sense Media, which conducts research into media use.

“Teens have even told us in this landmark report that they are distracted from their friends, from their homework and from sleep,” Steyer told NBC News.

“A lot of teens feel addicted to social media.”

Common Sense interviewed more than 1,100 teens aged 13 to 17 for about three weeks this spring and found some surprises. Teenagers are not mindless slaves to their smartphones, the survey found.

“Teens are often depicted as being heedless of the consequences of spending so much time on their smartphones,” the report reads.

“In reality, our survey reveals that teens are fully aware of the power of devices to distract them from key priorities, such as homework, sleep and time with friends and family.”

More than half — 57 percent — said social media distracts them from doing homework and 54 percent

admitted that they sometimes ignored people they were with to pay attention to social media. And 29 percent said a text or other notification had woken them up at night.

“A large proportion of all teens (44 percent) say they get frustrated with their friends for being on their phones so much when they’re hanging out together,” the report reads.

There’s no doubt that mobile devices dominate the lives of young people. More than 80 percent of the teenagers surveyed said they used social media.

That’s no more than in 2012, but now, 70 percent say they’re using social media multiple times a day, compared with just a third of them in 2012, the survey found.

Apps often drive this. One example is the Snapchat “streak,” in which users must send at least one message every single day to certain friends and acquaintances.

And while the teens don’t necessarily fight back by refusing to be drawn in, they are at least aware of what’s happening, the report showed.

“Nearly three out of four teens (72 percent) believe that tech companies manipulate users to spend more time on their devices,” the report reads.

“We find it very encouraging that teens are very aware that social media companies like Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook are manipulating them. That means that they’re increasingly aware that those companies don’t necessarily have their best interests at heart,” Steyer said.

But teenagers like the technology. The proportion of teens who say their favorite way to communicate with their friends in person dropped from 49 percent in 2012 to 32 percent in 2018.

It’s not all negative. A quarter of the teens surveyed said these apps make them feel less lonely, and only 3 percent said using them makes them feel more isolated. (net)

MASSACHUSETTS - Doctors gave no good reason for prescribing opioids to patients close to a third of the time during the buildup to the opioid overdose epidemic, researchers reported Monday.

A close check of medical records from 2006 to 2015 showed that a physician gave no explanation at all for writing an opioid prescription in 29 percent of the cases, the team at Harvard Medical School and the Rand Corp. found.

The findings help support criticism by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Food and Drug Administration and others that say inappropriate prescribing practices have helped drive the opioid crisis, in which 42,000 people died in 2016 alone.

The CDC has been trying to get doctors to prescribe opioids only when absolutely necessary, and to prescribe as low a dose as possible for the shortest time possible.

Nicole Maestas, a professor of health care policy at Harvard, and her colleagues went through tens of thousands of medical records, focusing on more than 31,000 physician surveys that included a prescription for an opioid.

Two-thirds did include a pain diagnosis: usually back pain, arthritis, diabetes or other chronic condition.

Five percent were for pain related to cancer.

“No pain diagnosis was recorded at the remaining 28.5 percent,” the team wrote in their report, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine.

Many patients had multiple ailments, so the researchers threw out any surveys that may have simply lacked space to record all the diagnoses. Still, many patients got renewals of opioids for no apparent good reason.

“At visits with no pain diagnosis recorded, the most common diagnoses were hypertension, hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol), opioid dependence and ‘other follow-up examination,’ ” the researchers wrote.

The number of opioid prescrip-

tions rose dramatically over the past 20 years, and the CDC says people would do better with other painkillers, or even just ice.

Since there’s been a big national focus on the crisis, prescribing has dropped, but not enough, the CDC says.

At the very least, doctors need to write down why they are giving someone an opioid, the researchers said.

“Whatever the reasons, lack of robust documentation undermines our efforts to understand physician prescribing patterns and curtails our ability to stem overprescribing,” Dr. Tisamarie Sherry, who worked on the study, said in a statement.

Meanwhile, a second study showed that most teens and young adults who have opioid use disorders are not getting the medication they do need.

Drugs such as buprenorphine, naltrexone and methadone can help people fight their addiction to opioids.

But the team at Boston Medical Center found that only 24 percent of youths with an opioid use disorder had a prescription for one of the drugs.

“In this multistate study of addiction treatment and retention in care, we found that three-quarters of youths diagnosed with opioid use disorder received treatment within three months,” the team wrote in the Journal of the American Medical Association’s JAMA Pediatrics.

“However, most treatment included behavioral health services only, and fewer than one of four youths received timely buprenorphine, naltrexone or methadone treatment.”

Many doctors don’t know about the drugs; there’s stigma around their use and it can be hard to get methadone especially, the researchers noted.

People with opioid use disorder are far more likely to drop out of treatment and relapse if they don’t get Food and Drug Administrationapproved drug treatment, the researchers noted. (net)

GIANYAR — Police are currently busy searching for a tourist named Gatis Baumanis, 33. This Latvian tourist has been missing since May 28. Until now, the search process has not found any clues. As consequence, police should put her in a wanted list (DPO). “Police have to put her in the wanted list as already missing for the past few months,” said the Chief of Ubud Police, Raka Sugita, when contacted on Tuesday (Sep. 9).

Chief Raka said that police are constantly trying to find out the traces where Gatis last stayed namely at the Green Spirit Villa at Kutub hamlet, Sayan, Ubud.

Until now, there are no indications if Gatis had departed. “We are still looking for her, even though no traces are left as if she had lost like being swallowed by the earth,” he said He said that aside from leaving no traces, the missing of Getis also left a big question mark, where the bag and clothes of Gatis kept in the villa’s room remain available. According to him, Gatis did not check out when leaving the villa. “All the clothes are still available and we have secured them,” he explained.

The lack of clues caused the tourist working as a transporta-

tion manager to be put in wanted list along with her colored photograph. It is also completed with details about her identity and physical features. Some of her features include having the height of 192 cm, curly hair and white skin. “Similarly, she has a wide round ear and a sharp nose. Her face is oval and has a mediumsized body,” he said.

Copy of the wanted list was then distributed to the entire police stations. In the wanted list sheet is carried that whoever happens to find her, they are asked to secure and hand her over to the Ubud Police Station.

Meanwhile, her family is also still confused about the missing of Getis. Since being reported to have been missing on May 28, the family never sees Gatis, so her family chose to report to police authority.

Chief Raka said that there had been a suspicion that Gatis had fallen into the abyss inside the villa where she stayed. IN order to overcome the problem of traffic congestion in southern Bali, the Ngurah Rai underpass was recently built to ease the flow of traffic for the IMF-WB 2018 delegates.

Tourism businessman and First Deputy Chairman of the Indonesia Hotel General Manager Association (IHGMA), I Made Ramia Adnyana, however feels that the new underpass is not 100 effective at overcome traffic congestion in southern Bali, though he did admit that it will smooth traffic at the Ngruah Rai intersection.

The project that cost IDR 326 billion was created by the government in an effort reduce the traffic congestion that plagues this area. “Road access to and from the airport

needs to have minimal traffic congestion as people are on a schedule to catch their planes”, he aid on Tuesday (Sep 11). So according to Adnyana there should be no additional turn-off – especially from the toll road. “The road should lead directly to the airport with no obstacles so tourists can feel comfortable getting to and from the airport”, he said.

Now, all overflowing vehicles from the Bali Mandara toll road are led to the Dewa Ruci intersection and vehicles arriving from the other direction have to turn around at the Ngurah Rai underpass roundabout, so queued up vehicles could cause congestion on the path to the airport.

General Manager of Puri Saron Hotel, Gusti Kade Sutawa, shares a similar opinions however car rental entrepreneur I Made Mendra Astawa disagrees and feels that the underpass can help reduce traffic congestion and improve transportation services.

South Bali experiences traffic congestion to such a degree that tourists may loose confidence in being able to enjoy this area. Balinese residence of other regions however may find that this is a blessings as more tourists choose ot visit other regions of Bali like Amed and Candidasa in Karangasem, or

other parts of Bali.

Nevertheless, South Bali primarily Kuta still reflects Bali tourism in general and as the entrance into Bali should give a good impression to visitors. The underpass should be able to reduce general congestion in the area by about 25 percent.

Some however believe this will only work temporarily.

Astawa however maintains that lessening traffic jams at important intersections is already a big help.

“There is still frequent congestion at many intersections like the Dewa Ruci intersection. “It used to be common to st there for 30 –60 minutes. We had really fight our way through there”, he said.

Overcoming the problem of traffic congestion cannot rely solely on the roads themselves but also needs to involve cheap and comfortable public transportation options like light rapid transport (LRT) and mass rapid transit (MRT), as presently more than a 1,000 new vehicles are beng added to the roads of Bali every month.

It costs a lot more to build an underpass than an overpass, however according to Balinese local wisdom overpasses cannot be built over holy places. (kmb42)

NEW YORK - Nicki Minaj has denied insulting the parenting skills of rival rapper Cardi B after an alleged fracas at a New York Fashion Week party.

The stars were reportedly embroiled in a vicious altercation at the Harpers Bazaar event last week, after which Cardi B posted on Instagram to accuse Minaj of making disparaging remarks about her ability as a mother.

Cardi B - real name Belcalis Almanzar - gave birth to daughter Kulture in July.

Addressing the accusation for the first time on her Queen Radio show, Minaj - real name Onika Tanya - said she would “never talk about anyone’s child or parenting”.

“I don’t care about anyone’s parenting - I don’t give a s*** and it’s so crazy to me that people always need to make Onika the bad guy,”

bemoaned the 35-year-old.

“I just want to let the world know that Onika Tanya Maraj would never, has never and will never speak ill of anyone’s child.

I am not a clown. That’s clown s***.”

Minaj - who is said to have had bad blood with Cardi B since 2017 - added that she was left “mortified” after footage of the alleged scuffle circulated online.

Avril Lavigne ‘accepted death’ while writing new song as singer tells of Lyme disease fight

Avril Lavigne has announced she will be returning to music after suffering Lyme disease.

LOS ANGELES - Avril Lavigne had “accepted death” when she wrote a new song on her sickbed during “one of the scariest moments” of her life.

In a blog, the 33-year-old singer has written an emotional letter to fans, thanking them for their patience as she confirmed her single’s release date, marking her comeback.

Lavigne, who rose to fame with the single Complicated in 2002, has been away from the music scene for five years, and has spent the last four battling Lyme disease.

Speaking of the disease, the Canadian star said: “Those were the worst years of my life as I went through both physical and emotional battles. I was able to turn that fight into music I’m really

proud of.

“Truly... by keeping my spirits up, having goals to reach and a purpose to live for, my music helped to heal me and keep me alive.”

She has also been through a difficult personal time, divorcing her husband of two years, Nickelback’s Chad Kroeger, in 2015.

Lavigne said the first single from the new album would be Head Above Water, a song which she says was written when she had “accepted death”.

She added: “My mother held me. In her arms, I wrote the first song that I am releasing to tell my story.”

Lavigne admitted she has not wanted to be open about suffering with the disease, but is now determined to help raise awareness

through her foundation.

She said: “Part of me doesn’t want to talk about being sick because I want it to all be behind me, but I know I have to.

“Because not only is it a part of my life, I need to bring awareness to the severity of Lyme Disease.

A single bug bite can f*** you up hard.

“People aren’t aware that Lyme must be treated almost immediately. Often if they are aware, they go untreated simply because they can’t get a Lyme diagnosis!

“And even when they do get a diagnosis, a lot of times they simply can’t afford the treatment.”

Lavigne’s health started to deteriorate in 2014, but it was several months before she was diagnosed with Lyme disease. (net)

Highways clogged with people fleeing North and South Carolina early Wednesday as monstrous Category 4 Hurricane Florence rumbled toward the eastern US as the biggest storm there in decades.

While many coastal residents heeded mandatory evacuation orders, others boarded up homes and businesses and chose to brave the storm, which is forecast to trigger severe flash flooding as it dumps as many as three feet (almost a meter) of rain in some areas. Lifethreatening storm surges of up to a staggering 13 feet in some places were also forecast.

Cooper warned that staying put would be a grave mistake and said people in evacuation zones “need to get out now.”

“This is not a storm that people need to ride out,” Cooper told reporters. “This is a storm that is historic, maybe once in a lifetime.”

Up to 1.7 million people in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia have been given voluntary or mandatory evacuation orders,

according to emergency management officials, as the storm churned across the Atlantic Ocean towards the coast. The eastbound lanes of several major highways have been shut down to allow for a smooth flow of traffic inland.

“We are already experiencing heavily impacted traffic on some of the evacuation routes,” said Jeff Byard, the associate administrator for response and recovery at the

Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

Forecasters are predicting that Florence will make landfall in the Carolinas late Thursday or early Friday as a still powerful Category 3 hurricane. As of 5:00 am (1100 GMT), Florence was a dangerous Category 4 hurricane packing sustained winds of 130 miles per hour (220 kilometers per hour), the Miami-based National Hurricane Center (NHC) said.

It was located 575 miles (925 kms) east-southeast of Cape Fear, North Carolina, and moving at 17

mph (28 kph) in a west-northwest direction. Briefing from the Oval Office, President Donald Trump urged people to heed orders to evacuate, saying “if you are asked to leave, get out.”
