The Universal release earned a “fresh” rating from review aggregator RottenTomatoes.com, with 74 percent of film critics responding favorably to the film. become a pseudo achievement because not a few artisans in Bali have gone bankrupt due to large capital domination from outside in the export market. Craftsmen in Gianyar regency, for example, dominantly in the field of crafts and handmade products have been eroded by the presence of large capital owners.

smith from Singapadu village, Nengah Rukun, conditions of the silversmiths at the village known as the center for craftsmen continued to slump. Such condition had happened since the Bali bombing in 2002 and the peak in 2013 where hundreds of crafters fell into sluggishness. More seriously, many of them shifted profession into

construction worker, farmer, odd worker, porter, trader and others.

“We are craftsmen who make various handicrafts based on request from the art shops. Since 2011 the order of the art shop reduced significantly. The symptoms leading to sluggishness have been undergone since 2002, even though there was still one or two orders and the volume diminished.

Most severely, since 2011 the crafters have no longer pursued in silver business, but they switched profession into construction workers, farmers and others,” he complained.

He also recognized the sluggish

condition of crafters also had an indirect impact on the declining revenue in the local hamlet. When the business condition was normal, crafters could create jobs for local community so the income of hamlet from the migrants increased. Today, many artisans were out of business due to lack of protection from the government.

“Formerly, there were totally 180 artisans involved at Seseh hamlet. Now, the surviving crafters do not exceed 50 people. Actually, our residents were formerly skillful art craftsmen, but today they change profession.

AMLAPURA - Hundreds of farmers in Abang subdistrict such as at Datah village and surrounding areas have been reluctant to plant cassava since a few years ago. It is kindled by the continuous attack of white grubs, so that the farmers fail to harvest or their cassava harvest dropped dramatically.

One of the farmers at Bingin hamlet, Datah, Gede Budi, said on Sunday (May 11) that farmers at Datah were reluctant to plant cassava. Formerly, the cassava was the source of income of local farmers.

In the harvest season made once a year falling around May-July, one hectare of cassava plants could produce over a ton of cassava tuber. The cassava tuber was then processed and dried for food supplies during dry season and at the beginning of rainy season, ahead

of the next harvest.

Today, most farmers left their land uncultivated rather than cultivated with cassava but did not result in anything. Sweet potatoes also faced the same condition, where the harvest never gave a result.

Hundreds of farmers often planted sweet potatoes just to look for the leaves for pig fodder. If it produced tubers, it could not be consumed as it perished after being bitten by white grubs.

Another farmer, Nyoman Gata,

said that he suffered losses when planting cassava and other crops such as corn and beans. Then, no farmers at the village cultivated beans. The white grubs had eaten up the leaves and the shoots for fodder, let alone the sweet potato slips.

This pest larvae phase belonged to telebo beetle. “We cannot cultivate seasonal crops such as cassava, taro and sweet potato, let alone the roots of banana tree and shoots of coconut as they are undermined by the white grubs,” said Gata.

Additionally, another farmer, Ketut Sudin, said the attack of white grubs was widespread and had occurred since about eight years ago. Allegedly, the attack occurred because people rarely wanted to capture and children were also reluctant to hunt it. In addition, many people also migrated to look for job opportunities outside like in Denpasar and Badung for a better life.

Apart from the Datah village, the attack of white grubs also occurred at surrounding villages such as at Kesimpar and Nawa Kerti in the Tulamben area. Other than white grub attack, many coconuts also fell before dry as attacked by squirrel pests. (013)

NEGARA - The sales of subsidized soybean at Subak Berawantangi, Tukadaya, reaped a protest from the local subak members. It happened because the price of soybean was higher than at other subak equally cultivating soybean. The selling price to farmers was at IDR 11,000 per kilogram; while at other subak was averagely at IDR 5,000 per kilogram.

A number of farmers from the local subak told reporters on Sunday (May 11) that the soybean was actually subsidized by the government. In fact, it was still sold at higher price in the field. Farmers actually knew this after getting information from outside and there was never any dissemination on this subsidized soybean. “We do not know how much the subsidy and the price are,” said this source.

At this subak, the price of soybean was sold for IDR 11,000. He compared the price to the Subak Sarikuning where it was only sold for IDR 5,000. Additionally, all of the subsidized soybeans were sold by the subak board. So, what kind of assistance was actually given to farmers? Nengah Widia, a farmer of Subak Berawantangi, Tukadaya, confessed that since he needed the soybeans for his land, he then purchased it. Similarly, he claimed to be surprised when finding the price was set at IDR 11,000 whereas the soybean was subsidized.

On the other hand, the Chief of Subak Berawantangi, Tukadaya, Melaya, Ketut Karya Seden, said that the subak sold the subsidized soybean for IDR 11,000 per kilogram because it had been pursuant to the agreement of the subak members. According to him, the government’s subsidy was only IDR 3,650. Since, there was an agreement of the subak members, the remaining results would be allocated for the repair of subak temple.

Another subak indeed sold it at cheaper price because there was no other purpose. “We here did it because we have an interest to develop a temple,” he said. Incidentally the subak organization with a total of 168 members was currently planting soybeans. (kmb26)

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

SAO PAULO — The frenzy over the World Cup sticker album has taken over Brazil like never before. Brazilians have long been avid fans of World Cup albums, but this year there’s added motivation with football’s showcase event coming to their own backyard for a month, starting June 12.

Everybody is talking stickers, from kids to grown-ups and students to doctors. Even Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff has joined in the fun. Fans have set up trading places in front of stadiums, plazas and bookstores to swap their stickers and try to complete their sets. Some are hardcore collectors, others just for the thrill of it. Some are helping their kids, others are challenging their work colleagues.

Brazil led all countries in sales during the 2010 World Cup and this time numbers are already better than they were four years ago, according to the FIFA-picked company in charge of the album, Italy-based Panini. The stickers are sold in more than 100 nations, with South America being the top market.

Germany and Switzerland were the top countries in sales after Brazil in 2010, Panini said.

“The last time I did this was when I was just a little kid, but with the World Cup coming to Brazil there was no way I was going to pass up on this one. The World Cup is here

and this album will be historic,” said 32-year-old Fernando da Silva, who was trying to complete his second album at a trading point in front of the Pacaembu Stadium in Sao Paulo.

“This brings back all memories from when I used to swap stickers with my friends at school.”

Hundreds of people have been going to the Pacaembu every weekend, as well as to other trading places across Brazil’s largest city, including supermarkets, cafes and malls. The city’s main art museum, MASP, is one of the most popular places for enthusiasts, attracting groups of teenagers, couples and entire families looking to swap their stickers.

There are many Internet groups devoted to people wanting to swap their stickers, and countless apps are at the disposal of fans looking for those hard-to-come-by stickers.

There’s even a virtual album created

by Panini. “This time it has been really easy to find the stickers because everybody has an album,” said Inez

Carvalho Oliveira, a 28-year-old pediatrician who was at the Pacaembu to try to find the 13 stickers still needed for her album.

Right next to her, 60-year-old Jucileia Lobato hastily gazed through a pack of duplicates, checking on the missing numbers from her list. “I started helping my grandkids when they bought the album because of the World Cup, and I liked it so much that I decided to buy one for myself,” she said, still looking at the stickers.

“But I have to hurry because my husband is waiting in the car .. I just want to find a few more stickers.”

President Rousseff told journalists she is helping her 3-year-old grandson complete his set.

This year’s album hasn’t been free of controversy, however.

Some fans were upset that nine stickers from sponsors were put on sale in Brazil, and Panini was forced to release a statement saying that it would exchange them for other stickers at no cost.

WASHINGTON — Eight members of the U.S. Senate are calling on the Food and Drug Administration to examine new research suggesting that some electronic cigarettes can produce dangerous carcinogens similar to those from traditional cigarettes. In a letter sent Thursday, the Democratic lawmakers say that the FDA should work to protect e- cigarette users and those nearby from cancer-causing vapors apparently produced by highpowered nicotine devices, known as tank systems.

Electronic cigarettes mainly consist of a battery, heating coil and a tank that holds flavored liquid nicotine. As users puff on the e-cigarette, the battery heats the coil and the liquid is turned into a vapor that is inhaled like smoke from a traditional cigarette. Tank systems are generally larger e-cigarettes — about the size of an electronic toothbrush — that can hold more nicotine and an extended battery supply.

Studies first reported by The New York Times suggest that these devices get hot enough to produce toxic chemicals like formaldehyde, a carcinogen also found in traditional cigarettes.

E-cigarette proponents have argued that the devices are a safer alternative to cigarettes because they do not produce the smoke and tar caused by burning tobacco. But the new research by scientists at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute challenges that reasoning, at least for some products.

The Buffalo, New York-based center’s study is scheduled for publication later this month in the Nicotine and Tobacco Research journal, according to the Times.

The findings also raise questions about the potential hazards of ecigarettes for non-users who inadvertently inhale their vapors. New York City, Chicago and Los Angeles have all recently instituted bans on the use of e-cigarettes in certain indoor areas and public places. Last month the FDA announced it would begin regulating the emerging e-cigarette field. But the senators point out that the FDA’s proposal focuses mainly on e-cigarette ingredients, rather than the vapors they produce.

“We simply cannot afford to lag behind in our complete understanding of the health consequences to the user and bystander of these and other advanced nicotine delivery products,” states the letter. It was signed by Sens. Edward J. Markey, D-Mass., Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., Jack Reed, D-Conn., Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, and Dick Durbin, D-Ill. An FDA spokeswoman said in a statement that the agency is also funding research into the safety of e-cigarette vapor, including one of the studies referenced by the senators.

“Where the science does not exist, we are able to fund the research to answer key questions related to e-cigarette safety and consumer behavior. In fact, FDA is funding dozens of studies that will help answer those questions, including four studies alone that will focus on the contents of e-cigarette vapor,” said Jennifer Haliski in an emailed statement.

Two billboards were respectively installed at each main intersection of Tanjung Benoa village and Pandawa intersection.

The head of the ‘Tanjung Benoa Rejects Benoa Bay Reclamation’ action, I Wayan Kartika, said the statement posted on the billboards was made last year.

“Since several groups of people want the reclamation, our conscience must automatically carry out the activity like this today declaring a common position and

reminding of the people to reject Benoa Bay reclamation,” he said.

DONETSK, Ukraine — The Kremlin on Monday said Ukraine’s government should engage in a dialogue with the eastern parts of the country following the controversial referendums where about 90 percent of voters said they backed their regions’ sovereignty. The Russian government voiced its hope in a statement that “the practical implementation of the referendums results will take place in a civilized way,” without violence.

It added that the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe could help organize a dialogue between Ukraine’s government and representatives of the east, where about 90 percent of votes backed sovereignty for their regions in Sunday’s vote. The Kremlin statement signaled that Russia has no intention to annex the Donetsk and Luhansk provinces, like it annexed Crimea following a similar referendum in March. It also noted the “high turnout” in the vote and condemned the use of force against civilians in the east.

According to early returns, 89 percent of those who cast ballots Sunday in the Donetsk region and about 96 percent of those who

turned out in the neighboring Luhansk region voted for sovereignty.

It remained unclear whether the vote could lead to their secession.

The pro-Russian insurgents, who organized Sunday’s balloting, said the ultimate status of the regions would be discussed later and could include the possibility of secession or annexation by Russia or remaining part of Ukraine.

South Korea has been highly critical of North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs, including recent rocket and missile tests and apparent preparations for a fourth nuclear test. But the comments from Seoul on Monday are stronger than normal. South Korea tries to avoid publicly talking about anything that could be inter-

preted as a collapse of the North Korean government because of worries that Pyongyang would raise tensions.

Pyongyang has been ramping up its rhetoric against Seoul and Washington since Obama and Park met in Seoul last month.

AMLAPURA - A number of cacao farmers at Kedui hamlet, Tembuku village, chose to cut down dozens of their cacao plants. The cutting down was done because their plants producing raw materials of chocolate were no longer considered productive. JAKARTA - The national leadership meeting of the United Development Party (PPP) has finally decided to support the presidential aspirant from the Great Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra), Prabowo Subianto, stated PPP Chairman Suryadharma Ali. “Finally, at the end of our meeting at 2 a.m., on Monday, we officially decided to support Prabowo Subianto as the presidential candidate in the July 9, 2014 presidential election,” Suryadharma Ali remarked.

He noted that there were three options at the start of the meeting on Saturday: Prabowo, Joko “Jokowi” Widodo of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP), and Aburizal Bakrie of the Golkar party with PPP Deputy Chairman Lukman Hakim Saefuddin as Aburizals running mate.

But, the meeting, which was held on Saturday and lasted till early Monday morning, to determine the direction of its coalition finally decided to coalesce with Prabowo.

BEIJING — China’s capital boosted armed police patrols Monday following a spate of attacks the government blames on terrorists seeking independence for the northwestern region of Xinjiang. Beijing’s police force said on its microblog that 150 additional vehicles and nearly 2,000 police and auxiliaries were being assigned to guard key intersections around the city of more than 20 million people.

The additional personnel were drawn from the paramilitary People’s Armed Police, members of whom could be seen standing in groups of three around Tiananmen Square in the heart of the city. Wearing helmets and carrying automatic rifles, they kept a close eye on crowds circulating around some of the country’s most iconic sites such as Tiananmen Gate and the Great Hall of the People where foreign dignitaries are welcomed.

The additional security was taken to increase the public’s sense of security, intimidate would-be assailants, and shorten response times to violent incidents, the police statement said.

“This armed patrol brigade will

speedily and effectively take down all forms of terrorist activity,” it said.

The statement said the new security teams would be a permanent presence in the capital, adding to a slew of increased security measures that include checkpoints and security screening for subway riders and anyone seeking to enter public spaces such as Tiananmen Square.

China has increased security countrywide in the wake of two recent attacks at train stations that killed 30 people and at least two attackers. The assaults were blamed on extremists from among Xinjiang’s native Turkic Muslim Uighur ethnic group. The violence has also included an unprecedent-

ed attack last year on Tiananmen Gate in the heart of Beijing that killed three Uighur assailants and two tourists.

Although Uighur (pronounced WEE’-gur) separatists have been waging a low-level insurgency for decades, recent attacks have been bolder and bloodier, targeting civilians and underscoring shortfalls in Beijing’s ability to respond. Uighur activists say the violence is being fueled by restrictive and discriminatory policies imposed by China’s majority Han ethnic group.

China has blamed several incidents on overseas-based separatist radicals in the East Turkistan Islamic Organization, although it has presented little evidence.

Deterioration of the artisans in Gianyar was inseparable from the minimal intervention of local government. As proof, the difficulties faced by the artisans such as access to market and capital had not yet been facilitated well. Chairman of the Center for Business Economic Data Analysis, Faculty of Economy, Udayana University, Dr. Sudjana Budhi, acknowledged that behind the success of the handmade product export, there were the men behind the curve, namely the rural artisans. He argued that since the process of the export trade started from Bali as an international tourist destination, then there would be surely groups wishing to travel while doing business of handicraft products. As consequence, a gap arose between the exporters and the artisans due to mutual market drawing force between the craft artists and businessmen being savvy to create the conditions to achieve a profit for them.

Nevertheless, Bali still had to get up and fix the economy so that people did not live as riding horse forever. Many alternatives could be taken by the county/municipal government and central government. For instance, it had been prepared a budget mechanism through a partnership between the employers, local government and the state budget in order to realize a business zone that could involve small businesses. Nowadays, it had been developed in various regions known as the Special Economic Zone (SZ) initiated by the Ministry of Finance together with the Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Finance and Industry. JAKARTA - Indonesian presidential frontrunner Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s plan to slowly reduce fuel subsidies over the next few years is the best option to ease pressure on the budget deficit while keeping inflation in check, economists said.

Whoever succeeds outgoing President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in October will need to quickly tackle the problem.

The subsidies cost the government around $20 billion a year and are the main factor behind a current account deficit that was more than 2 percent of gross national product in the first quarter, and a budget deficit that is expected to be as high as 2.5 percent of GDP this year.

Jokowi, the popular governor of Jakarta, and his main rival, former general Prabowo Subianto, advocate different ways for bringing down costs.

Protests over fuel price increases contributed to the downfall of President Suharto in 1998, and presidential candidates are mindful of the political sensitivities as they campaign for the July 9 election.

Jokowi has told local media that he would gradually reduce fuel subsidies over a four or five-year period.

Indonesian fuel prices are some of the cheapest in the region, currently priced at 6,500 rupiah ($0.56) a litre

for gasoline and 5,500 for diesel.

An annual increase of up to 1,500 rupiah for fuel would be manageable and should help to avoid street protests like in 2005 and 2008, said Sri Adiningsih, economic adviser to Jokowi’s Indonesian Democratic-Party of Struggle (PDI-P).

Adiningsih told Reuters the money would be better spent on infrastructure projects like roads, ports and trains.

Fuel prices were raised by 33 percent in 2013. But, President Yudhoyono softened the blow by providing a 9-trillion rupiah compensation package to millions of poor families, and the were no major protests against the higher fuel prices.

Prabowo, who is running a distant second to Jokowi in opinion polls, is expected to keep fuel prices at current rates but impose measures to ensure subsidies were only used by the poor and lower middle class.“We will still give our people subsidies, not reduce it,” said Kardaya Warnika, a lawmaker and senior energy adviser for Prabowo’s Gerindra Party.

“We won’t give the subsidy to

people who do not need it. For example, foreigners,” Warnika said, adding that the subsidy should be for those who make less than 20 million rupiah a month.

Under the Gerindra plan, car owners would have to register their car and include their income to obtain the fuel subsidy.

Some economists believed Jokowi’s plan was the better of the two options for Indonesia.

“The cut in prices is the preferred one,” said Santitarn Sathirathai, an economist at Credit Suisse. “Typically, when the price is wrong the quantitative measures have limited use. There tends to be leakages.”

Wellian Wiranto, an economist with OCBC Bank, said Jokowi’s plan was the “cleanest way” to get rid of subsidies, providing fiscal stability that would benefit the country’s bond market.

A third option, one the finance ministry is hoping to add to the 2015 budget, is to fix fuel subsidies at a certain amount. That would allow fuel prices to adjust with market prices.

BlackBerry steps up fightback with Indonesian phone Agence France-Presse

JAKARTA - BlackBerry will this week launch a new budget handset in Indonesia, one of its last bastions, a major step in the ailing smartphone maker’s fightback against titans Samsung and Apple.

The Z3, which is designed for Indonesia but will likely be introduced in other emerging markets later, is the first new BlackBerry phone since chief executive John Chen took the helm of the crisis-hit company in November.

The handset is also the first to be produced from the Canadian firm’s partnership with Taiwanese tech giant Foxconn, which makes gadgets for Apple, and is a key test of whether the new strategy will work.

The company believes the device will be a hit in Indonesia, where many have remained loyal to BlackBerry, with a spokesman saying that “this product will deliver something that should resonate with consumers”.

But analysts believe it may already be too late for a comeback by the company that pioneered modern smartphone culture but has been unable to keep up with competition from Apple’s iPhone and handsets using the Google Android operating system.

Recent years have been dismal for BlackBerry, and it has suffered heavy losses and slashed thousands of jobs.

The company even put itself up for sale last year but abandoned hopes of finding a buyer several months later, and ousted chief executive Thorsten Heins.

Since Chen took over, there have been small signs of improvement. The company reported a loss of $423 million in the three months to March 1, which was not as bad as had been feared.

As part of its turnaround strategy, the smartphone maker announced the tie-up with Foxconn in December, which involves transferring to the Taiwan company manufacturing and inventory management, while allowing BlackBerry to focus on software and services.

BlackBerry has chosen to launch its first new phone from the partnership in Indonesia, Southeast Asia’s biggest economy with legions of social media-mad young consumers, where its devices remain popular but it has nevertheless lost ground in recent years.

The phone has a five inch (13 centimetre) touchscreen, like most of BlackBerry’s newest handsets which do not have the physical keyboards of the older devices.

It is designed specifically with Indonesian consumers in mind. The BBM messaging service -- wildly popular in Indonesia -- comes loaded with pictures of local cartoon characters for users to send to one another.

There is also a limited edition with “Jakarta” engraved on it.

BlackBerry believes the low price -- it will retail for around $200 -- will be a particular selling point.

The phone will be launched on Tuesday in Jakarta and will go on sale in the following days.

Clippers rally for 101-99 win over Thunder Associated Press

LOS ANGELES — Darren Collison scored eight of his 18 points in the final 2:58 as the Los Angeles Clippers came back to beat the Oklahoma City Thunder 101-99 on Sunday to level the Western Conference semifinal series 2-2. In the day’s other playoff, Paul George scored a career playoff-high 39 points and added 12 rebounds to lead the Indiana Pacers back from a 19-point deficit and past the Washington Wizards 95-92 to move one victory away from returning to the Eastern Conference finals.

Russell Westbrook, who scored 27 points, missed a 3-pointer and Serge Ibaka’s tip attempt was too late at the buzzer, allowing the Clippers to salvage a game they trailed until the final 1:23. Blake Griffin led Los Angeles with 25 points, making 9 of 11 free throws, and Chris Paul had 23 points and 10 assists. Jamal Crawford added 18 points. DeAndre Jordan had 14 rebounds, helping the Clippers win the boards, 45-43 — the first time in 11 playoff games the Thunder were outrebounded.

Kevin Durant scored 40 points, hitting 15 of 18 free throws, for the Thunder. Game 5 is Tuesday night in Oklahoma City. It was the 14th comeback by the Clippers this season after trailing by double digits. They rebounded from 12 points down in the second quarter of Game 7 to oust Golden State in the first round.

The Clippers had no answer for Durant and Westbrook until midway through the fourth quarter.

That dynamic duo drove the lane with abandon, drew fouls and made free throws in leading the Thunder to an early 22-point lead. Durant’s three-point play early in the fourth extended the Thunder’s lead to 15 points, and they were still up by 10 with 7:44 to go.

Rosberg reckons he needed one more lap to win Nico Rosberg believes he needed just one more lap to overtake Mercedes Formula 1 team-mate Lewis Hamilton for Spanish Grand Prix victory.

Hamilton assumed the 2014 F1 world championship lead by beating Rosberg at Barcelona. But it was a close-run thing, as Rosberg used an alternate tyre strategy to close in on Hamilton in the final laps, finishing just 0.6 seconds behind.

Asked how many more laps he felt he needed to pull off an overtaking move, Rosberg replied: “I think one more to be honest. I could have given him a go. “I wasn’t close enough but with one more lap I would have been.

“I’m a bit gutted.”

Rosberg feels he urgently needs to address his starts, having failed to jump his polesitting team-mate off the line. “The start was unfortunately poor,” he said. “It is a bit of a weakness I have at the moment. Three bad starts in a row and that has cost me.

He switched to hard tyres in his first pitstop while Hamilton stayed on mediums, meaning the opposite scenario applied in their final shootout for the win. Rosberg was happy that his strategic switch had paid off, and just rued running out of time to try a proper passing move. “The race pace was good, the best thing to do was switch strategies and it worked out perfectly,” said Rosberg.

“But this is a really difficult track to get close to the guy in front. “I got close, and at Turn 10 on the last lap I could have gone for a kamikaze move, but it wouldn’t have worked so not much point. “Lewis did a great job all weekend and was a little bit ahead, but there are a lot of positives to take out of it.

“I am fully motivated to take that bit extra and edge him out next time and it is doable.”

Cole left out of England World Cup squad, quits internationals Reuters

LONDON - Experienced left back Ashley Cole has been left out of the England squad for next month’s World Cup in Brazil and the Chelsea defender has announced his international retirement. Cole, 33, who won 107 caps, was told by Roy Hodgson he will not be included in his provisional 23-man squad or among the standby players to be named on Monday, with the England manager saying it was one of the hardest decisions of his career.

“Got the call from Roy and agree England team should be about the young players,” Cole tweeted on Sunday. “I think it best I retire from England team now. “We have a great manager and team and I wish them only success. I will be supporting them like a true fan. Thanks to everyone for everything.”

Hodgson told TheFA.com: “There are few players who can be considered among the very best in the world, but Ashley in his prime was the best left back without question. “Of course I must respect his decision to retire, he has been one of England’s finest players, but I want to look to the future. It has been one of the hardest decisions of my career.”

Southampton’s 18-year-old left back Luke Shaw, who has one England cap, is to be named as cover for Everton’s Leighton Baines in Hodgson’s squad, British media reported. Shaw made his England debut as a halftime substitute for Cole in the 1-0 friendly win over Denmark in March.

“Baines and Shaw are great players, proved this season, and

are the future of this country, it was a pleasure to get 107 caps,” added Cole. “Like me or not, trust me it’s hurt me to stop playing for my country, proud and honoured.”

He has started every tournament match since his first appearance at the 2002 World Cup against Sweden.

But he has struggled to get into the Chelsea team this term under Jose Mourinho and was used once off the bench in a three-month period from late January before recent starts at Liverpool and in the Champions League semi-final against Atletico Madrid. “Among many difficult decisions I’ve had to make for my squad not selecting Ashley was one of the hardest,” said Hodgson.

Those same players, described by some as millionaire mercenaries attracted to the Etihad Stadium

by Abu Dhabi oil money alone, queued up to pay fulsome tribute to their manager.

“I’m so happy for the manager because it’s his first title in Europe.

He remained calm. It was a pleasure to work for him,” said Samir Nasri, who scored the opening goal. “It’s an amazing feeling. It’s my second league in three years. It was an amazing league all year. Everyone put his ego on the side.”

Pellegrini will have to get used to the praise, his steady hand at the tiller credited with seeing City through the last few weeks of the season without the drama that marked their 2011-12 triumph.

What might have settled City nerves most, however, was the huge superiority in goal difference they enjoyed over Liverpool, which allowed them the luxury of needing only a draw in their final match of the season. That advantage came from a campaign in which City scored 102 goals, one short of the Premier League record but one more than the much-vaunted Liverpool attack and a whopping 31 more than third-placed Chelsea.

FOOTBALL PHILOSOPHIES

The narrative of the Premier League title race was often presented as a battle of footballing philosophies between attackminded Liverpool under Brendan Rodgers and Jose Mourinho’s more defensive approach at Chelsea. Having beaten them both to the title, however, Pellegrini was quick to remind reporters that City’s record 156 goals in all competitions this season gave them a place in the debate.

“It’s not just winning titles that is important, but it’s the way you win them,” he told reporters in the post-match media conference.

“It doesn’t matter who you play, maybe it’s easy to score a goal and then go behind the ball.

“We have players to play on the counter-attack, they are fast and technical, but again, I’m not

criticising the way other teams play, but if it was me, I wouldn’t be happy to win in that way. “The fans enjoyed the whole season - we broke the records for the most goals scored by any team in England. It is the way we must play with the quality of players we have.”

Pellegrini admitted that everything in the dressing room had not been perfect when he arrived at City but was also quick to revert to his customary self deprecation.

“It’s a great honour to be the first manager from outside of Europe to win the title but I’m not the most important person,” the 60year-old said.

“I think we all enjoyed this season - the players, me, the fans - because the team played very well, this is as important as winning the title.” Claiming the Premier League title in his first year at City was also a step up for Pellegrini, who had failed to win the Spanish title in his one season at Real Madrid in 2009-10.

He earned that job on the back of the marvels he worked in taking Villareal into the top two in Spain and to the semi-finals of the Champions League. It was repeating the trick at Malaga, who he took to fourth place in La Liga and the quarter-finals of the Champions League, that earned him his chance at City.

As his counterpart for much of the season at Manchester United will attest, however, many coaches have failed to step up from success at a smaller club to challenging at the business end of the season with one of Europe’s big-spending super clubs.

Pellegrini will now undoubtedly enjoy Monday’s parade around Manchester city centre but said he would soon be back to work preparing for next season. “Big teams cannot be satisfied with one title. It’s very important,” he said. “Celebrate today, tomorrow and Monday and on Tuesday start working for next season because this club and players deserve more titles.”

Atletico, Barca set up Spanish title decider Associated Press

MADRID — Atletico Madrid and Barcelona set up a winnertakes-all decider for the Spanish league title after both teams drew on Sunday, while Real Madrid lost to see its slim title hopes end. Little-used defender Tobias Alderweireld headed home a corner kick for Atletico in the 74th minute to cancel out Samuel Garcia’s opener.

Though Malaga finished with 10 men, Atletico failed to score a winner that would have secured a first league title in 18 years after Elche held Barcelona 0-0. Instead, Atletico travels to the Camp Nou next weekend for a dramatic finale to decide the champion. Atletico leads with 89 points, three better than Barcelona, which means a draw will be enough to pry the championship away from the defending champion, which must win to retain its title.

“We still believe in this team.

We’re Atletico and we’re going to go there to win,” Atletico captain Gabi Fernandez said. “We’re used to playing in finals.” Madrid, which has 84 points, limped out of the league race following a poor showing in Vigo, where a pair of turnovers allowed Charles to score both goals in a 2-0 win.

Honda, Kagawa selected in Japan’s World Cup squad Associated Press

TOKYO — Japan coach Alberto Zaccheroni announced his 23-man World Cup squad on Monday, picking AC Milan’s Keisuke Honda among 12 Europe-based players and adding a surprise with the selection of veteran striker Yoshito Okubo. As expected, Honda was named along with Manchester United midfielder Shinji Kagawa and Mainz forward Shinji Okazaki. Honda has scored just one goal since joining Milan from CSKA Moscow in January but played a key role in Japan’s qualifying campaign.

“In the end, we decided to go with players who will be aggressive on the attack,” Zaccheroni said. “We felt these members give us the best chance to play our brand of football.” Okubo was one of the few surprises in the squad Zaccheroni unveiled at a news conference Monday.

Cole left out of England World Cup squad, quits internationals Reuters

LONDON - Experienced left back Ashley Cole has been left out of the England squad for next month’s World Cup in Brazil and the Chelsea defender has announced his international retirement. Cole, 33, who won 107 caps, was told by Roy Hodgson he will not be included in his provisional 23-man squad or among the standby players to be named on Monday, with the England manager saying it was one of the hardest decisions of his career.

“Got the call from Roy and agree England team should be about the young players,” Cole tweeted on Sunday. “I think it best I retire from England team now. “We have a great manager and team and I wish them only success. I will be supporting them like a true fan. Thanks to everyone for everything.”

Hodgson told TheFA.com: “There are few players who can be considered among the very best in the world, but Ashley in his prime was the best left back without question. “Of course I must respect his decision to retire, he has been one of England’s finest players, but I want to look to the future. It has been one of the hardest decisions of my career.”

Southampton’s 18-year-old left back Luke Shaw, who has one England cap, is to be named as cover for Everton’s Leighton Baines in Hodgson’s squad, British media reported. Shaw made his England debut as a halftime substitute for Cole in the 1-0 friendly win over Denmark in March.

Pellegrini will have to get used to the praise, his steady hand at the tiller credited with seeing City through the last few weeks of the season without the drama that marked their 2011-12 triumph.

What might have settled City nerves most, however, was the huge superiority in goal difference they enjoyed over Liverpool, which allowed them the luxury of needing only a draw in their final match of the season. That advantage came from a campaign in which City scored 102 goals, one short of the Premier League record but one more than the much-vaunted Liverpool attack and a whopping 31 more than third-placed Chelsea.

FOOTBALL PHILOSOPHIES

The narrative of the Premier League title race was often presented as a battle of footballing philosophies between attackminded Liverpool under Brendan Rodgers and Jose Mourinho’s more defensive approach at Chelsea. Having beaten them both to the title, however, Pellegrini was quick to remind reporters that City’s record 156 goals in all competitions this season gave them a place in the debate.

“It’s not just winning titles that is important, but it’s the way you win them,” he told reporters in the post-match media conference.

“It doesn’t matter who you play, maybe it’s easy to score a goal and then go behind the ball.

“We have players to play on the counter-attack, they are fast and technical, but again, I’m not

criticising the way other teams play, but if it was me, I wouldn’t be happy to win in that way. “The fans enjoyed the whole season - we broke the records for the most goals scored by any team in England. It is the way we must play with the quality of players we have.”

Pellegrini admitted that everything in the dressing room had not been perfect when he arrived at City but was also quick to revert to his customary self deprecation.

“It’s a great honour to be the first manager from outside of Europe to win the title but I’m not the most important person,” the 60year-old said.

“I think we all enjoyed this season - the players, me, the fans - because the team played very well, this is as important as winning the title.” Claiming the Premier League title in his first year at City was also a step up for Pellegrini, who had failed to win the Spanish title in his one season at Real Madrid in 2009-10.

He earned that job on the back of the marvels he worked in taking Villareal into the top two in Spain and to the semi-finals of the Champions League. It was repeating the trick at Malaga, who he took to fourth place in La Liga and the quarter-finals of the Champions League, that earned him his chance at City.

As his counterpart for much of the season at Manchester United will attest, however, many coaches have failed to step up from success at a smaller club to challenging at the business end of the season with one of Europe’s big-spending super clubs.

Pellegrini will now undoubtedly enjoy Monday’s parade around Manchester city centre but said he would soon be back to work preparing for next season. “Big teams cannot be satisfied with one title. It’s very important,” he said. “Celebrate today, tomorrow and Monday and on Tuesday start working for next season because this club and players deserve more titles.”

Atletico, Barca set up Spanish title decider Associated Press

MADRID — Atletico Madrid and Barcelona set up a winnertakes-all decider for the Spanish league title after both teams drew on Sunday, while Real Madrid lost to see its slim title hopes end. Little-used defender Tobias Alderweireld headed home a corner kick for Atletico in the 74th minute to cancel out Samuel Garcia’s opener.

Though Malaga finished with 10 men, Atletico failed to score a winner that would have secured a first league title in 18 years after Elche held Barcelona 0-0. Instead, Atletico travels to the Camp Nou next weekend for a dramatic finale to decide the champion. Atletico leads with 89 points, three better than Barcelona, which means a draw will be enough to pry the championship away from the defending champion, which must win to retain its title.

“We still believe in this team.

Clippers rally for 101-99 win over Thunder Associated Press

LOS ANGELES — Darren Collison scored eight of his 18 points in the final 2:58 as the Los Angeles Clippers came back to beat the Oklahoma City Thunder 101-99 on Sunday to level the Western Conference semifinal series 2-2. In the day’s other playoff, Paul George scored a career playoff-high 39 points and added 12 rebounds to lead the Indiana Pacers back from a 19-point deficit and past the Washington Wizards 95-92 to move one victory away from returning to the Eastern Conference finals.

Russell Westbrook, who scored 27 points, missed a 3-pointer and Serge Ibaka’s tip attempt was too late at the buzzer, allowing the Clippers to salvage a game they trailed until the final 1:23. Blake Griffin led Los Angeles with 25 points, making 9 of 11 free throws, and Chris Paul had 23 points and 10 assists. Jamal Crawford added 18 points. DeAndre Jordan had 14 rebounds, helping the Clippers win the boards, 45-43 — the first time in 11 playoff games the Thunder were outrebounded.

Kevin Durant scored 40 points, hitting 15 of 18 free throws, for the Thunder. Game 5 is Tuesday night in Oklahoma City. It was the 14th comeback by the Clippers this season after trailing by double digits. They rebounded from 12 points down in the second quarter of Game 7 to oust Golden State in the first round.

The Clippers had no answer for Durant and Westbrook until midway through the fourth quarter.

Rosberg reckons he needed one more lap to win Nico Rosberg believes he needed just one more lap to overtake Mercedes Formula 1 team-mate Lewis Hamilton for Spanish Grand Prix victory.

Hamilton assumed the 2014 F1 world championship lead by beating Rosberg at Barcelona. But it was a close-run thing, as Rosberg used an alternate tyre strategy to close in on Hamilton in the final laps, finishing just 0.6 seconds behind.

Asked how many more laps he felt he needed to pull off an overtaking move, Rosberg replied: “I think one more to be honest. I could have given him a go. “I wasn’t close enough but with one more lap I would have been.

“I’m a bit gutted.”

Rosberg feels he urgently needs to address his starts, having failed to jump his polesitting team-mate off the line. “The start was unfortunately poor,” he said. “It is a bit of a weakness I have at the moment. Three bad starts in a row and that has cost me.

“But this is a really difficult track to get close to the guy in front. “I got close, and at Turn 10 on the last lap I could have gone for a kamikaze move, but it wouldn’t have worked so not much point. “Lewis did a great job all weekend and was a little bit ahead, but there are a lot of positives to take out of it.

“I am fully motivated to take that bit extra and edge him out next time and it is doable.”

MEXICO CITY — One of the military deserters who helped found the gang that grew into the brutal Zetas cartel was among six people killed during a gunbattle in a border town, a Tamaulipas state security official said Sunday.

The official said authorities confirmed that Galindo Mellado Cruz was one of five gunmen who died Friday in a shootout that also killed a Mexican soldier in Reynosa, which is across from McAllen, Texas. The official was not permitted to be quoted by name for security reasons.

The official said that Mellado Cruz was one of the 30 ex-special forces soldiers who created the Zetas gang to serve as enforcers for the Gulf Cartel before splitting off in a bloody breakup with its former ally. The official said Mellado Cruz no longer held a Zetas command position.

Tamaulipas became one of the arenas for fighting between the Gulf Cartel and the Zetas and was one of Mexico’s most violent states. But the state had calmed somewhat by 2012, before violence re-ignited in recent weeks.

BEIJING — China’s capital boosted armed police patrols Monday following a spate of attacks the government blames on terrorists seeking independence for the northwestern region of Xinjiang. The additional security was taken to increase the public’s sense of security, intimidate would-be assailants, and shorten response times to violent incidents, the police statement said.

“This armed patrol brigade will

speedily and effectively take down all forms of terrorist activity,” it said.

The statement said the new security teams would be a permanent presence in the capital, adding to a slew of increased security measures that include checkpoints and security screening for subway riders and anyone seeking to enter public spaces such as Tiananmen Square.

China has increased security countrywide in the wake of two recent attacks at train stations that killed 30 people and at least two attackers. The assaults were blamed on extremists from among Xinjiang’s native Turkic Muslim Uighur ethnic group. The violence has also included an unprecedent-

ed attack last year on Tiananmen Gate in the heart of Beijing that killed three Uighur assailants and two tourists.

Although Uighur (pronounced WEE’-gur) separatists have been waging a low-level insurgency for decades, recent attacks have been bolder and bloodier, targeting civilians and underscoring shortfalls in Beijing’s ability to respond. Uighur activists say the violence is being fueled by restrictive and discriminatory policies imposed by China’s majority Han ethnic group.

China has blamed several incidents on overseas-based separatist radicals in the East Turkistan Islamic Organization, although it has presented little evidence.

Whoever succeeds outgoing President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in October will need to quickly tackle the problem.

The subsidies cost the government around $20 billion a year and are the main factor behind a current account deficit that was more than 2 percent of gross national product in the first quarter, and a budget deficit that is expected to be as high as 2.5 percent of GDP this year.

Jokowi, the popular governor of Jakarta, and his main rival, former general Prabowo Subianto, advocate different ways for bringing down costs.

Protests over fuel price increases contributed to the downfall of President Suharto in 1998, and presidential candidates are mindful of the political sensitivities as they campaign for the July 9 election.

Jokowi has told local media that he would gradually reduce fuel subsidies over a four or five-year period.

Indonesian fuel prices are some of the cheapest in the region, currently priced at 6,500 rupiah ($0.56) a litre

for gasoline and 5,500 for diesel.

An annual increase of up to 1,500 rupiah for fuel would be manageable and should help to avoid street protests like in 2005 and 2008, said Sri Adiningsih, economic adviser to Jokowi’s Indonesian Democratic-Party of Struggle (PDI-P).

Adiningsih told Reuters the money would be better spent on infrastructure projects like roads, ports and trains.

Fuel prices were raised by 33 percent in 2013. But, President Yudhoyono softened the blow by providing a 9-trillion rupiah compensation package to millions of poor families, and the were no major protests against the higher fuel prices.

Prabowo, who is running a distant second to Jokowi in opinion polls, is expected to keep fuel prices at current rates but impose measures to ensure subsidies were only used by the poor and lower middle class.“We will still give our people subsidies, not reduce it,” said Kardaya Warnika, a lawmaker and senior energy adviser for Prabowo’s Gerindra Party.

“We won’t give the subsidy to

people who do not need it. For example, foreigners,” Warnika said, adding that the subsidy should be for those who make less than 20 million rupiah a month.

Under the Gerindra plan, car owners would have to register their car and include their income to obtain the fuel subsidy.

Some economists believed Jokowi’s plan was the better of the two options for Indonesia.

“The cut in prices is the preferred one,” said Santitarn Sathirathai, an economist at Credit Suisse. “Typically, when the price is wrong the quantitative measures have limited use. There tends to be leakages.”

Wellian Wiranto, an economist with OCBC Bank, said Jokowi’s plan was the “cleanest way” to get rid of subsidies, providing fiscal stability that would benefit the country’s bond market.

A third option, one the finance ministry is hoping to add to the 2015 budget, is to fix fuel subsidies at a certain amount. That would allow fuel prices to adjust with market prices.

Recent years have been dismal for BlackBerry, and it has suffered heavy losses and slashed thousands of jobs.

The company even put itself up for sale last year but abandoned hopes of finding a buyer several months later, and ousted chief executive Thorsten Heins.

Since Chen took over, there have been small signs of improvement. The company reported a loss of $423 million in the three months to March 1, which was not as bad as had been feared.

As part of its turnaround strategy, the smartphone maker announced the tie-up with Foxconn in December, which involves transferring to the Taiwan company manufacturing and inventory management, while allowing BlackBerry to focus on software and services.

BlackBerry has chosen to launch its first new phone from the partnership in Indonesia, Southeast Asia’s biggest economy with legions of social media-mad young consumers, where its devices remain popular but it has nevertheless lost ground in recent years.

The phone has a five inch (13 centimetre) touchscreen, like most of BlackBerry’s newest handsets which do not have the physical keyboards of the older devices.

It is designed specifically with Indonesian consumers in mind. The BBM messaging service -- wildly popular in Indonesia -- comes loaded with pictures of local cartoon characters for users to send to one another.

There is also a limited edition with “Jakarta” engraved on it.

BlackBerry believes the low price -- it will retail for around $200 -- will be a particular selling point.

The phone will be launched on Tuesday in Jakarta and will go on sale in the following days.

DONETSK, Ukraine — The Kremlin on Monday said Ukraine’s government should engage in a dialogue with the eastern parts of the country following the controversial referendums where about 90 percent of voters said they backed their regions’ sovereignty. The Russian government voiced its hope in a statement that “the practical implementation of the referendums results will take place in a civilized way,” without violence.

It added that the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe could help organize a dialogue between Ukraine’s government and representatives of the east, where about 90 percent of votes backed sovereignty for their regions in Sunday’s vote. The Kremlin statement signaled that Russia has no intention to annex the Donetsk and Luhansk provinces, like it annexed Crimea following a similar referendum in March. It also noted the “high turnout” in the vote and condemned the use of force against civilians in the east.

According to early returns, 89 percent of those who cast ballots Sunday in the Donetsk region and about 96 percent of those who

turned out in the neighboring Luhansk region voted for sovereignty.

It remained unclear whether the vote could lead to their secession.

The pro-Russian insurgents, who organized Sunday’s balloting, said the ultimate status of the regions would be discussed later and could include the possibility of secession or annexation by Russia or remaining part of Ukraine.

Election organizers said turnout topped 70 percent by late afternoon, but with no international election monitors in place, it was all but impossible to confirm such claims.

Turnout was brisk at some polling stations visited by AP journalists.

At one polling station at a school in Donetsk, all voting slips that

could be seen in the transparent ballot boxes showed that self-rule had been selected.

Most opponents of sovereignty appeared likely to stay away from the polls rather than risk attracting attention. Surveys by polling companies have indicated that a significant majority of people in Ukraine reject movements to break away parts of the country.

SEOUL — A rhetorical battle between the rival Koreas intensified Monday with a South Korean official saying North Korea “must disappear soon.” The comments, which will likely draw a furious response from Pyongyang, followed a series of sexist and racist slurs by North Korea against the leaders of South Korea and the United States. Pyongyang’s state media likened South Korean President Park Geun-hye to an “old prostitute” and U.S. President Barack Obama to a “monkey” in recent dispatches.

South Korean Defense Ministry spokesman Kim Min-seok told reporters at a briefing in Seoul that North Korea isn’t a real country and exists for the benefit of only one person, a reference to dictator Kim Jong Un. He said the North has no human rights or public freedoms.

South Korea has been highly critical of North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs, including recent rocket and missile tests and apparent preparations for a fourth nuclear test. But the comments from Seoul on Monday are stronger than normal. South Korea tries to avoid publicly talking about anything that could be inter-

preted as a collapse of the North Korean government because of worries that Pyongyang would raise tensions.

Pyongyang has been ramping up its rhetoric against Seoul and Washington since Obama and Park met in Seoul last month.

During that visit, Obama said that it may be time to consider further sanctions against North Korea and that the U.S. will not hesitate to use its military might to defend its allies.

South Korea has called the North’s verbal insults against Park immoral and unacceptable. The U.S. State Department described the North’s racist slurs against Obama as “disgusting.”

Worries about renewed tension on the Korean Peninsula have recently deepened with Pyongyang threatening to conduct its fourth nuclear test to protest what it calls U.S. and South Korean hostility.

North Korea’s barrage of rocket and missile tests earlier this year drew condemnation from South Korea, the United States and others. The North says the tests were part of military training aimed at coping with annual Seoul-Washington springtime military drills that Pyongyang calls an invasion rehearsal.

Senators warn of carcinogen risk with e-cigarettes

SAO PAULO — The frenzy over the World Cup sticker album has taken over Brazil like never before. Brazilians have long been avid fans of World Cup albums, but this year there’s added motivation with football’s showcase event coming to their own backyard for a month, starting June 12.

Everybody is talking stickers, from kids to grown-ups and students to doctors. Even Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff has joined in the fun. Fans have set up trading places in front of stadiums, plazas and bookstores to swap their stickers and try to complete their sets. Some are hardcore collectors, others just for the thrill of it. Some are helping their kids, others are challenging their work colleagues.

Brazil led all countries in sales during the 2010 World Cup and this time numbers are already better than they were four years ago, according to the FIFA-picked company in charge of the album, Italy-based Panini. The stickers are sold in more than 100 nations, with South America being the top market.

Germany and Switzerland were the top countries in sales after Brazil in 2010, Panini said.

“The last time I did this was when I was just a little kid, but with the World Cup coming to Brazil there was no way I was going to pass up on this one. The World Cup is here

and this album will be historic,” said 32-year-old Fernando da Silva, who was trying to complete his second album at a trading point in front of the Pacaembu Stadium in Sao Paulo.

“This brings back all memories from when I used to swap stickers with my friends at school.”

Hundreds of people have been going to the Pacaembu every weekend, as well as to other trading places across Brazil’s largest city, including supermarkets, cafes and malls. The city’s main art museum, MASP, is one of the most popular places for enthusiasts, attracting groups of teenagers, couples and entire families looking to swap their stickers.

There are many Internet groups devoted to people wanting to swap their stickers, and countless apps are at the disposal of fans looking for those hard-to-come-by stickers.

There’s even a virtual album created

Carvalho Oliveira, a 28-year-old pediatrician who was at the Pacaembu to try to find the 13 stickers still needed for her album.

Right next to her, 60-year-old Jucileia Lobato hastily gazed through a pack of duplicates, checking on the missing numbers from her list. “I started helping my grandkids when they bought the album because of the World Cup, and I liked it so much that I decided to buy one for myself,” she said, still looking at the stickers.

“But I have to hurry because my husband is waiting in the car .. I just want to find a few more stickers.”

President Rousseff told journalists she is helping her 3-year-old grandson complete his set.

This year’s album hasn’t been free of controversy, however.

Some fans were upset that nine stickers from sponsors were put on sale in Brazil, and Panini was forced to release a statement saying that it would exchange them for other stickers at no cost.

WASHINGTON — Eight members of the U.S. Senate are calling on the Food and Drug Administration to examine new research suggesting that some electronic cigarettes can produce dangerous carcinogens similar to those from traditional cigarettes. In a letter sent Thursday, the Democratic lawmakers say that the FDA should work to protect e- cigarette users and those nearby from cancer-causing vapors apparently produced by highpowered nicotine devices, known as tank systems.

Electronic cigarettes mainly consist of a battery, heating coil and a tank that holds flavored liquid nicotine. As users puff on the e-cigarette, the battery heats the coil and the liquid is turned into a vapor that is inhaled like smoke from a traditional cigarette. Tank systems are generally larger e-cigarettes — about the size of an electronic toothbrush — that can hold more nicotine and an extended battery supply.

Studies first reported by The New York Times suggest that these devices get hot enough to produce toxic chemicals like formaldehyde, a carcinogen also found in traditional cigarettes.

E-cigarette proponents have argued that the devices are a safer alternative to cigarettes because they do not produce the smoke and tar caused by burning tobacco. But the new research by scientists at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute challenges that reasoning, at least for some products.

The Buffalo, New York-based center’s study is scheduled for publication later this month in the Nicotine and Tobacco Research journal, according to the Times.

The findings also raise questions about the potential hazards of ecigarettes for non-users who inadvertently inhale their vapors. New York City, Chicago and Los Angeles have all recently instituted bans on the use of e-cigarettes in certain indoor areas and public places. Last month the FDA announced it would begin regulating the emerging e-cigarette field. But the senators point out that the FDA’s proposal focuses mainly on e-cigarette ingredients, rather than the vapors they produce.

“We simply cannot afford to lag behind in our complete understanding of the health consequences to the user and bystander of these and other advanced nicotine delivery products,” states the letter. It was signed by Sens. Edward J. Markey, D-Mass., Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., Jack Reed, D-Conn., Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, and Dick Durbin, D-Ill. An FDA spokeswoman said in a statement that the agency is also funding research into the safety of e-cigarette vapor, including one of the studies referenced by the senators.

“Where the science does not exist, we are able to fund the research to answer key questions related to e-cigarette safety and consumer behavior. In fact, FDA is funding dozens of studies that will help answer those questions, including four studies alone that will focus on the contents of e-cigarette vapor,” said Jennifer Haliski in an emailed statement.

MANGUPURA - Hundreds of villagers of Tanjung Benoa coalesced into the action of ‘Tanjung Benoa Rejects Benoa Bay Reclamation’ held a rally by installing billboards and flags rejecting the reclamation at local village, Sunday afternoon (May 11). Two billboards were respectively installed at each main intersection of Tanjung Benoa village and Pandawa intersection.

Installation of the billboards was accompanied by baleganjur gamelan music and characterized by trance undergone by one of the residents.

Messages of the billboards posted were in relation to the decision made by three of the four hamlets at Tanjung Benoa village and the joint statement issued by the village that rejected the reclamation plan of Benoa Bay. First line of the billboard literally said ‘The Truth Will Win at the End, Let’s Guard Together the Decision of All Hamlets.’ Meanwhile, the bottom line mentioned that there would be sanction to be imposed on anyone infringing the decision of the customary hamlet. So, residents were urged to comply with the customary bylaw. Otherwise, the local area would be chaotic.

The head of the ‘Tanjung Benoa Rejects Benoa Bay Reclamation’ action, I Wayan Kartika, said the statement posted on the billboards was made last year.

“Since several groups of people want the reclamation, our conscience must automatically carry out the activity like this today declaring a common position and

reminding of the people to reject Benoa Bay reclamation,” he said.

Kartika requested the decision of majority of the Tanjung Benoa residents to be appreciated. All this time, he said, his party often received intimidation from parties which were pro with the reclamation plan.

“Concrete intimidation and movement have been definite. Those speaking in the media on behalf of the people of Tanjung Benoa that the Tanjung Benoa community approves or supports the reclamation have no valid reasoning. They do not have clear reasoning, but we do,” he said.

Field Coordinator of the action, Kadek Rino, added the three hamlets rejecting the reclamation were the Tengah hamlet, Purwa Santhi hamlet and Kertha Pascima hamlet.

“We at the village have four hamlets.

Those having positively rejected consist of three hamlets and we conclude the

Tanjung Benoa village very firmly rejects the reclamation based on the signatures and statement made in the meeting of Tanjung Benoa village signed by our village officials,” he explained.

Spokesperson of the action, I Ketut Sudarsana, said that another hamlet, namely the Anyar hamlet, indeed had not issued a statement in harmony with the attitude of the three other hamlets. “There is no information given why it has not made a statement yet,” he said.

Meanwhile, the chief of Anyar hamlet, I Wayan Wardio, could not be asked for his confirmation related to the matter.

When making a visit to his residence, he was not at home.

Aside from the billboards, it was also installed a huge flag with the illustration of clenched fist. Then, the flag was written with the text reading ‘Tanjung Benoa Rejects Benoa Bay Reclamation.’ Other than two huge flags, at least there were a hundred small flags distributed to residents of Tanjung Benoa, especially those who rejected the reclamation plan of Benoa Bay. “Each home will be fitted with a flag in accordance with the commitment to reject the reclamation,” said Sudarsana. GIANYAR - Craft sector is the backbone of tourism sector and become the mainstay of the local economy of Bali, but it is now increasingly abandoned by the youth. The young generation living in the area where people mostly work as craftsman starts reluctant to take the jobs becoming the foundation of their family life.

This condition can be seen from some regions denoting the handicraft center such as Gianyar region. Animal sculptors at Pujung Tegallalang, pottery artisans at Perangsada, Blahbatuh, weavers at Bona, silversmiths at Celuk, textile craftsmen and other types of crafts have been mostly old and weak. Young craftsmen are rarely found. “Even, if they are still available, their number can still be counted on fingers,” said I Gusti Ngurah Susila.

This Headman of Bona admitted if the area was formerly known as the center of cane works with various types of products. Around the 1970s, other than being farmers, Bona communities sustained their life by becoming weavers. They were including the elderly and teenagers. Even, children were able to earn their school pocket money. Along with the declining market demand coupled with the global competition, the competition even eliminated local crafters. By becoming a craftsman, they could not guarantee their lives today. As a result, many of them turned into construction workers or other jobs that could still make them survive.

Diminishing amount of the younger generations that was willing to take a job as craftsman like their parents earlier was also experienced by young people at Celuk, known for its silver crafts. The silver handicraft growing and developing at Celuk village, Sukawati subdistrict, Gianyar, during the 1980s through 2012 posed the sparkling period for crafters dealing with the field of silver.

According to Wayan Suweta, a Celuk silversmith, the silver craftsmen of Celuk had currently entered the fourth generation. The children at that time (at his age) were very easy to make money.

Those who still attending junior high school were easily earning money for school supplies, so they no longer burdened their parents.

However, amidst the success in the past many silversmiths did not perform regeneration. Due to desire to make their children more advanced, parents sometimes forbade their children to pursue the craft. Even, many outsiders worked and learned about the silver craft which in the end they were grown and successful.

Meanwhile, while many younger generations increasingly abandoned the craft sector, the existing data in the Gianyar Trade and Industry Agency even showed an increase every year. As the data released last Friday (May 9), the number of craftsmen within the past three years in Gianyar increased. In 2011, the number of artisans reached 22,961 people, in 2012 (23,038 people) and in 2014 (23,098 people). The data were based on the results of monitoring by the Industry and Trade Agency.

But, since many craftsmen switched their profession, the Industry and Trade Agency admitted the registered and licensed craftsmen in 2014 reached 660 people. However, the data of non-formal craftsmen reached 22,438 people.

For the data validation, the agency would make a monitoring and evaluation in 2015. (dar)

AMLAPURA - Hundreds of farmers in Abang subdistrict such as at Datah village and surrounding areas have been reluctant to plant cassava since a few years ago. It is kindled by the continuous attack of white grubs, so that the farmers fail to harvest or their cassava harvest dropped dramatically.

One of the farmers at Bingin hamlet, Datah, Gede Budi, said on Sunday (May 11) that farmers at Datah were reluctant to plant cassava. Formerly, the cassava was the source of income of local farmers.

In the harvest season made once a year falling around May-July, one hectare of cassava plants could produce over a ton of cassava tuber. The cassava tuber was then processed and dried for food supplies during dry season and at the beginning of rainy season, ahead

of the next harvest.

Today, most farmers left their land uncultivated rather than cultivated with cassava but did not result in anything. Sweet potatoes also faced the same condition, where the harvest never gave a result.

Hundreds of farmers often planted sweet potatoes just to look for the leaves for pig fodder. If it produced tubers, it could not be consumed as it perished after being bitten by white grubs.

Another farmer, Nyoman Gata,

said that he suffered losses when planting cassava and other crops such as corn and beans. Then, no farmers at the village cultivated beans. The white grubs had eaten up the leaves and the shoots for fodder, let alone the sweet potato slips.

This pest larvae phase belonged to telebo beetle. “We cannot cultivate seasonal crops such as cassava, taro and sweet potato, let alone the roots of banana tree and shoots of coconut as they are undermined by the white grubs,” said Gata.

Additionally, another farmer, Ketut Sudin, said the attack of white grubs was widespread and had occurred since about eight years ago. Allegedly, the attack occurred because people rarely wanted to capture and children were also reluctant to hunt it. In addition, many people also migrated to look for job opportunities outside like in Denpasar and Badung for a better life.

Apart from the Datah village, the attack of white grubs also occurred at surrounding villages such as at Kesimpar and Nawa Kerti in the Tulamben area. Other than white grub attack, many coconuts also fell before dry as attacked by squirrel pests. (013)

NEGARA - The sales of subsidized soybean at Subak Berawantangi, Tukadaya, reaped a protest from the local subak members. It happened because the price of soybean was higher than at other subak equally cultivating soybean. The selling price to farmers was at IDR 11,000 per kilogram; while at other subak was averagely at IDR 5,000 per kilogram.

A number of farmers from the local subak told reporters on Sunday (May 11) that the soybean was actually subsidized by the government. In fact, it was still sold at higher price in the field. Farmers actually knew this after getting information from outside and there was never any dissemination on this subsidized soybean. “We do not know how much the subsidy and the price are,” said this source.

At this subak, the price of soybean was sold for IDR 11,000. He compared the price to the Subak Sarikuning where it was only sold for IDR 5,000. Additionally, all of the subsidized soybeans were sold by the subak board. So, what kind of assistance was actually given to farmers? Nengah Widia, a farmer of Subak Berawantangi, Tukadaya, confessed that since he needed the soybeans for his land, he then purchased it. Similarly, he claimed to be surprised when finding the price was set at IDR 11,000 whereas the soybean was subsidized.

On the other hand, the Chief of Subak Berawantangi, Tukadaya, Melaya, Ketut Karya Seden, said that the subak sold the subsidized soybean for IDR 11,000 per kilogram because it had been pursuant to the agreement of the subak members. According to him, the government’s subsidy was only IDR 3,650. Since, there was an agreement of the subak members, the remaining results would be allocated for the repair of subak temple.

Another subak indeed sold it at cheaper price because there was no other purpose. “We here did it because we have an interest to develop a temple,” he said. Incidentally the subak organization with a total of 168 members was currently planting soybeans. (kmb26)

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

“We are craftsmen who make various handicrafts based on request from the art shops. Since 2011 the order of the art shop reduced significantly. The symptoms leading to sluggishness have been undergone since 2002, even though there was still one or two orders and the volume diminished.

Most severely, since 2011 the crafters have no longer pursued in silver business, but they switched profession into construction workers, farmers and others,” he complained.

He also recognized the sluggish

condition of crafters also had an indirect impact on the declining revenue in the local hamlet. When the business condition was normal, crafters could create jobs for local community so the income of hamlet from the migrants increased. Today, many artisans were out of business due to lack of protection from the government.

“Formerly, there were totally 180 artisans involved at Seseh hamlet. Now, the surviving crafters do not exceed 50 people. Actually, our residents were formerly skillful art craftsmen, but today they change profession.
