Ministry to try attracting 800,000 Australian tourists in 2011 Antara

NUSA DUA - The culture and tourism ministry is to promote Indonesia’s tourism in Australia with the aim of enticing up to 800,000 of the country’s citizens to visit Indonesia in 2011, a spokesperson said.

WEATHER FORECAST

“The figure is about 230,000 or nearly 45 percent higher than the number of Australians who vacationed in Indonesia in 2010,” Noviendi Makalam, the ministry’s international promotions director,

said. To achieve this year’s target, the promotional efforts in Australia would focus on four major cities, namely Perth, Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney, she said.

The funds required for the promotional programs in Australia totaled Rp2 billion with part it to be provided by the government and the rest by tourism industry players in Bali. Noviandi said the numbers of Australian tourists visiting Indonesia had always been relatively big but the Australian market had actually never been canvassed through direct promotional efforts. The ministry would soon send an

“Australia Sales Mission 2011” to Australia in which 28 tourism industry players in Bali would take part. Of the number, 24 would be entities engaged in accommodations, two in attractions and the rest in the travel business. They were all members of the Bali Village association. The promotional program which had been executed annually for the past six years would this year take place on May 22 - 31, 2011.

MANGUPURA - International cooperation is highly required to uncover the crimes of corruption such as bribery in international business transactions involving both large corporations and individuals of each country. It was revealed by Deputy Chairman of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), Candra Hamzah in the International Conference on

Corruption and Bribery Eradication in International Transactions. Candra said the experience of American and European countries in the handling international scale corruption would greatly help uncover the cases. Many cases of corruption could be resolved after the establishment of inter-state cooperation. Currently, the KPK itself had formed a partnership with Singapore, Britain, Germany, Switzerland and the United States

through its FBI. Disclosure of corruption cases handled by the commission could not go alone, but had to establish cooperation with other parties. Any case involving foreigners with Indonesian citizens should be handled through inter-state cooperation. For Indonesian perpetrators would be handled by KPK. Conversely, foreign perpetrators would be handed over to their respective home country. “Do not let our people only be

handled, while foreign nationals who are also committing a corruption are even not processed. So, it is required an inter-state cooperation,” said Candra, accompanied by Gary Johnson (International Corruption Unit, Federal Bureau of Investigation or FBI), Gunther Puhm (Attorney Apple Court of Munich, Germany) and Clair Daams (Deputy Federal Attorney, Switzerland) in Nusa Dua, Wednesday (May 11).
