Nicki Minaj beats Beyoncé for craziest courtside look at NBA game

LOS ANGELES - Nicki Minaj outdid herself at the Los Angeles Lakers game against the Houston Rockets in L.A. on Tuesday. It was hard to pay attention to the action on the floor when the “Anaconda” singer, seated courtside, came out of hiding in such a big way. The 35-year-old attentiongetter had her shades on for the game and blond locks piled high, surely making it hard for the person behind her to see. But it’s her outfit that deserves its own highlight reel: a cleavage-exposing leather bodysuit and chaps, fishnets, and spiked stilet-

tos. (Yes, we said chaps.) The topper — literally — was her silver sci-fi snakeskin-pattern coat. Right now, Barbz are scrambling to copy the look, but truly it’s a tough one to touch unless you are Queen Minaj. We have come to learn that Nicki is never boring. A few years ago at a 76ers game in Philly, she

wore a pink fur jacket and leather pants, and wanted everyone to see her oversized hot-pink Chanel bag. She had on shades indoors that time too. She also turned heads in a big way at the 2015 All-Star Game. She looked totally casual in a bedazzled bra top and sparkly heels. (net)

Country-singing drag queen Trixie Mattel on her surprise success

“I don’t expect a lot of people who love drag to also be like, ‘I love Drag Race, and then I got to hear my Chris Stapleton album.’ Not necessarily an obvious crossover,” laughs Trixie Mattel, sitting at Yahoo Entertainment in flawless June Carter Cash drag. But the RuPaul’s Drag Race All-Stars 3 winner-turned-country artist is making real inroads in the music world with her two autoharp-laden Americana/folk albums, Two Birds and One Stone. The latter album recently hit No. 1 on iTunes’ Singer-Songwriter chart and Billboard’s Heatseekers chart; she’s received glowing coverage in NME, NPR, and Rolling Stone Country; and she even has an endorsement deal with Fender for her upcom-

ing Moving Parts tour. She’s realistic about her long-shot potential to infiltrate the mainstream Nashville scene, but so far, she’s happily finding her country niche. “I think the perception of audiences that love folk and country is they’re perceived to be more closed-minded than they really are,” Trixie asserts. “It’s one of those things where the most extreme voices represent the masses, do you know what I mean? It’s like, not everybody goes to church hates gay people. Not everybody who listens to folk and country would object to drag. I mean, look around — is Dolly [Parton] not in drag? She’s in probably a bigger wig than I am right now! I’ve always found a way to win people over, especially with comedy. … I operate more like the crying-clown territory, where I love to tell jokes, I love sappy folk music, and I love to marry the two together.” (net)

Rescuers are seen around the wreckage of an Algerian army plane which crashed near the Boufarik airbase from where the plane had taken off on April 11, 2018. The Algerian military plane crashed and caught fire killing 257 people, mostly army personnel and members of their families, officials said.

257 dead as military plane crashes in Algeria’s worst air disaster

Algeria suffered its deadliest ever air catastrophe Wednesday when a military plane crashed after takeoff, killing 257 people on board, mostly army personnel and their family members. An AFP photographer at the scene saw the charred wreckage of the plane after it caught fire in a field near the Boufarik airbase, 30 kilometres (19 miles) south of Algiers.

Hundreds of ambulances and dozens of fire trucks with sirens wailing rushed to the scene of the crash, in an uninhabited area where one person was injured on the ground by debris. Firefighters extinguished the blaze and security forces set up a cordon to prevent journalists and onlookers from approaching. Witnesses who had been working in nearby fields told AFP that the plane had burst into flames before it hit the ground. The defence ministry said in a statement that 247 passengers and 10 crew were killed without mentioning any survivors. Most of those on board were army members and their families, it said. There was no immediate word

on the cause of the crash. Deputy Defence Minister General Ahmed Gaid Salah visited the site and ordered an investigation, the defence ministry said. Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika declared three days of national mourning over the crash starting Wednesday. The veteran leader also ordered that a special prayer be said for the victims after weekly Muslim prayers on Friday, a decree published by state press agency APS said. The Ilyushin IL-76 transport plane was bound for Tindouf in southwest Algeria near the borders with Morocco and Western Sahara. The Tindouf region is home to refugees

from Western Sahara and houses the administrative offices of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic declared in 1976 by the Algiers-backed Polisario Front which seeks independence for the disputed region. Among the victims of the plane crash were 30 Sahrawis, “the sick and their companions, men, women and children, who had been returning from treatment in Algeria”, said the Polisario. Rabat considers Western Sahara an integral part of Morocco and proposes autonomy for the resource-rich territory. According to the plane manufacturer’s website, the IL-76, a fourengine plane built in the Soviet Union and then Russia, can transport between 126 and 225 passengers

depending on the model and configuration. The North African country has suffered a string of military and civilian aviation disasters but Wednesday’s was Algeria’s deadliest ever plane crash and the world’s fourth costliest in human lives in 20 years.

- History of disasters Two Algerian military planes collided mid-flight in December 2012 during a training exercise in Tlemcen, in the far west of the country, killing the pilots of both planes. In February 2014, 77 people died when a military plane carrying army personnel and family members crashed between Tamanrasset in southern Algeria and the eastern city of Constantine. Only one person survived after the C-130 Hercules transport aircraft came down in the mountainous Oum El Bouaghi region. The defence ministry blamed that crash on bad

weather. An Air Algerie passenger plane flying from Burkina Faso to Algiers crashed in northern Mali in July 2014, killing all 116 people on board including 54 French nationals. In October the same year, a military plane crashed in the south of the country during a training exercise, killing the two men on board. That came more than a decade after all but one of the 103 people on an Air Algerie Boeing 737-200 died in March 2003 when it crashed on takeoff in the country’s south after an engine caught fire. Volcanic ash from latest eruption of Mount Agung avoids Besakih

AMLAPURA Mount Agung had another small eruption on Wednesday (Apr. 11). In contrast to the previous eruption a few days early, this time there wee bursts of volcanic ash that blew to the west and southwest. Oddly, the volcanic ash was reported to reach the sub-district of Susut in Bangli but did not touch down in the area of Besakih Temple. “According to information we received from volunteers there was a thin layer of ash in areas west of Besakih such as Keboh and Keladian”, explained Secretary of the Mount Agung Jagabaya Brotherhood (Pasebaya), I Wayan Suara Arsana. Headman of Amerta Bhuana, Selat, said that the Pasebaya command post at East Duda village was in contact with volunteers in Besakih who reported that there was no volcanic ash there. The worship activities related to the Ida Batara Turun Kabeh (IBTK) ritual continued to run smoothly. Headman Arsana said a number of Pasebaya volunteers said that their heard what sounded like a speedy car during the last eruption. This rumble that was pnly felt in the upper areas occurred three time. Arsana who used to work as a journalist added that residents of Temukus hamlet located within 4 km of the crater of Mount Agung continued their activities as usual. “At the time of the eruption, the area of Temukus was swept by strong winds to the west. There was no ash fall nor any panic”, he explained. The eruption that emitted a 500 meter high grey and white ash

cloud occurred at 9:04. With a clear sky the eruption was clearly visible though it went unnoticed by most people. Around 12:00, the volcanic ash fall that was reported in some areas stopped. After the initial eruption there were several blasts throughout the day. IN the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG)’s press release, Nurul Husaeni from the Rendang Observation Post stated that the alert status for Mount Agung remains at “alert”. The PVMBG release also stated that the ash columns was blown westerly by the prevailing winds. I Nengah Sunidia, a volunteer from Dukuh village in the subdistrict of Kubu said that the ash column was clearly visible from the headman of Dukuh’s office that is located 7 km form the summit of Moutn Agung, but there were no reports of ash fall in the area of Kubu. Chief of Besakih customary village who also serves as Chairman of the IBTK Ritual Committee, Jro Mangku Widiartha, said the volcanic activities of Mount Agung did not dampen people’s enthusiasm for praying. The nganyarin procession conducted by the Bali provincial government also ran smoothly. .Jro Mangku Widiartha added that he hopes that people will not respond to this natural phenomenon with panic. He invites people to instead feel connect more strongly with Creator. During the IBTK rituals, people pray that Ida Batara Giri Tohlangkir bestows grace and security on all people. (117)

The Badung Environment and Sanitation Agency (DLHK) took swift action to handle this seasonal garbage invasion by deploying the sanitation quick response team (URC) and the Kuta Beach team to clean up the seaweed and plastic garbage from the beach. Head of the DLHK Badung, Putu Eka Merthawan, confirmed that Beano Beach and Nusa Beach are their biggest challenges this year as these two beaches located on the Southern tip of Badung will be visited by participants of the IMF Annual Meeting in October. The DLHK Badung is thus using all available resources to handle the

problem. “We have also contacted several agencies and tourism businesses about taking concrete action together”, he concluded. The onslaught of what is politely referred to as marine debris, occurs every year around this time of year. April to November is considered “marine debris season”. Unlike Kuta Beach which receives enormous amounts of plastic garbage, Tanjung Benoa hosts more seaweed than anything else, although plastic garbage is becoming a more common sight every year. “The largest amount of marine debris tends to wash ashore during the east monsoon in November”, he said.

Admittedly, the amount of garbage drift is considerably less than on other beaches such as Kuta Beach and other nearby beaches. Although mostly made up of seaweed this debris still needs to be cleaned up as otherwise it rots leaving a foul odore. “We are addressing this issue so that everything will be cleaned up in time for the IMF event”, said Merthawan. ON Wednesday (APR 11) the DLHK Badung deployed 50 officers along with 100 people form the tourism sector to do a clean up that resulted in two large truck loads of wet garbage being brought off to the Suwung landfill. SEMARAPURA — Nusa Penida Islands become the mainstay of Klungkung district as a source of revenue from tourism sector. This year, the number of tourist visits is targeted to reach around 470,000 people, both domestic and foreign. However behind it, the existence is still imbalanced with the condition of infrastructure. Some roads are still damaged. Similarly, tourism facilities are not yet adequate. Based on the data, the target of tourist visit to the islands of the blue paradise this year amounts to 478,169 people. It increases from the target in 2017 whose realization

reached 423,726 people from the target of 333,000 people. To support this, promotion continues to be encouraged, either through social media or websites or events of Nusa Penida and Semarapura Festival having been going on for several times and this year remains to be scheduled. Behind the increasingly rapid development, road damage remains about 45 percent of the total length of 229 kilometers. In addition, some villages having potential tourist objects such as Pecelutan are also still experiencing water crisis. It has been a classic problem every year. Such conditions are believed to have an

influence on the comfort of tourists. “If the infrastructure is damage, certainly it affects the visit. Tourists will become less comfortable,” said the Head of the Klungkung Tourism Office, I Nengah Sukasta, on Wednesday (Apr. 11). This official from Kemoning hamlet, Semarapura Klod, did not dismiss a number of attractions having not been equipped with adequate facilities such as parking lot and bathroom, including safety fences to anticipate accidents. However, he affirmed the district government is still continuing to reform. This year it has made at least ten plans and hope-

fully they can be realized in 2019. “Some of the plans include parking lot and bathroom. We’re working on arrangement and so are the roads. However, it lies in the Public Works Agency,” he said. The tourism development in the archipelago is believed to be increasingly and rapidly ahead. To anticipate so as not going too far, a grand design has been prepared. The accommodation development permit is published strictly. The focus is not only on one island, such as Nusa Lembongan but also began to be directed to other areas as an effort of equity. “The grand design has been drafted long time

ago along with the details. I cannot describe it entirely,” he said. Damaged road handling is targeted by local government at the latest by 2020. As getting nearer, the budget disbursed this year is less than before. It is only about IDR 25 billion. Head of the Klungkung Public Works Agency, I Gusti Nyoman Supartana, also admitted it. Moreover, the overall infrastructure budget decreases from IDR 108 billion to IDR 77 billion. “The improvements will apply priority scale. In Nusa Penida, the road is very important to support tourism,” he explained. (kmb45)

Tanjung Benoa and Nusa Dua Beach enshrouded in garbage in marine debris

MANGUPURA — After Kuta and Kedonganan Beach became inundated with wave-borne garbage and other debris, Tanjung Benoa and Nusa Dua have been hit by similar tides. As seen on Wednesday (Apr. 11), the beaches were covered in seaweed, plastic and small branches. This area that is visited by many tourists looked horrible. many tourists to do water sport has looked slum.

Is the Visor Making a Comeback? Kim Kardashian West and Dior Think So

THE visor, a mere fragment of a hat, has a reputation as a classic elder accessory, beloved by bridgeplaying nanas in Tampa. Stodgy golfers wear the hat snout on the green. The hollow hat was also the signature bro headgear of the noughties, often worn upturned,

complemented with bleached tips. Call it visual birth control. Call it cheesy. But, naturally, the visor— like those icky-chic dad shoes and fanny packs—is making a comeback. Look to Kim Kardashian West, who has also heralded the return of the divisive thong heel:

She wore a Dior visor from Spring 2018 that boasted a bill-like, faceengulfing, neon-orange clear brim while frolicking at the beach. Other designers and style stars are also putting their stamp of approval on the half-topper. Burberry churned out its own plaid version,

also with a plastic brim, for Fall 2018, for a very late ’90s throwback. Bella Hadid wore a a race car–themed checked incarnation down the runway at Tommy Hilfiger for Spring 2018. The visor, after all, has cool, sporty roots. It’s a go-to in the tennis world, worn by powerful

The One Swimsuit That’s Part-Bikini, Part One-Piece All of my fellow indecisive ladies, please stand up. Every time an outing requiring a swimsuit pops up, I spend far too much time ruminating over one decision: bikini or maillot? If you would have asked me this question five years ago, that answer would be simple: bikini. But one-pieces are back, and they’re much chicer than the swim meet-style options of the past. What’s one to do when they want to show off a little more skin than a one-piece allows, but would rather skip the full exposure of a bikini? If the 15 swimsuits ahead are any indication, the answer is a cut-out one-piece. Before you envision lace-up, Miamiready options and bizarre tan lines, this summer’s stock reaches new heights of creativity. Prepare to pick and choose exactly which space of skin you plan on showing off, from just a hint of midriff to a full center cut-out, and get ready to cut that indecision out once and for all.

players like Serena Williams or Anna Kournikova, who have often color-coordinated the piece to their looks. And even Cindy Crawford wore one with a sports bra and high ponytail in the Vogue July 1991 issue—not a bad look to try out nearly three decades later. (net)

Fishermen encounter hawksbill stuck in nets

3

SINGARAJA — A hawksbill was found caught in the net on the coastal border between Baktiseraga village and Pemaron village, Buleleng subdistrict on Tuesday (Apr. 10). The turtle was found in a limp condition. It is suspected of running out of oxygen when caught in the net. On its fins were found a number of injuries suspected to happen due to the net attached to the coral boulders at a depth of about two meters. The turtle was first found to get netted by fisherman Ketut Budiartana. At that time, he dived to shoot fish. Around 10:00, Budiartana found a turtle caught in a net. At first, he tried to remove the net ensnaring the body of the turtle. Due to equipment difficulties, he then reported his findings to other fishermen on Penimbangan Beach, including turtle conservation team, that immediately came down to the location using a boat. Budiartana with the save turtle activist Putu Dedy Yastika then dived and evacuated the unfortunate turtle. Not long after, the turtle was successfully released from the mesh. The turtle was then transported by boat to undergo treatment in the captivity. Putu Dedy Yastika said when the turtle was found its body had been limp allegedly due to running out of oxygen when stuck in the nets. In addition, some parts of its body were injured due to meshes accidentally snagged around the boulders at a depth of about three meters. The position of the turtle finding from the land is about 300 meters northward right from the bridge between Baktiseraga village and Pemaron village. “I happened to be with the conservation team in the location of captivity. After getting the information, we came down to dive and rescue the turtle. At that time, the turtle was limp. Probably, it happened due to running out of oxygen. It is estimated to have been there for three hours where it could not release itself from the meshes and possibly it is a used net stuck in the coral reef,” he explained. Meanwhile, I Made Oka Ri-

awan, a lecturer of Biological Studies at Undiksha University said that based on external examination of the turtle found to get stuck in the net with the length of about 57 centimeters, width of 38 centimeters, and a fin length of about 25 centimeters. From the data, this rare turtle has entered adulthood and weighs about 20 kilograms. In addition, Oka found some injuries on the fins to fracture and a number of injuries but not too deep on the body part. The injuries are alleged to have been caused by getting stuck in the nets. Meanwhile, the weakness of the body happened due to running out of oxygen when in the sea and trying to break the meshes of the net. “Thankfully, the turtle can be quickly helped and has survived about 3 hours, so it ran out of oxygen. Its injury is possibly caused by the scratch of meshes. When attempting to release, the fins were broken. There are other injuries but not too severe,” he said. In the meantime, Oka and the save turtle activists take care of the turtle body in the breeding site until the injuries can be cured. In addition, the quarantine period of the next few days is used to ensure another injury. If the condition is recovered, the turtle will be rereleased into its natural habitat. “Together with the save turtle activists here, we cure the injuries and ensure the turtle condition is healthy. After that, we will release it,” he added. When asked about the hawksbill turtle population on Penimbangan Beach and its surroundings, Oka mentioned they are not too much nesting to lay eggs on the land of Penimbangan Beach. This happens because sand conditions are not suitable for hawksbill species. However, these turtles often cross the waters of North Bali for food. (kmb38)

Development of green hotel MANGUPURA — To encourage the development of green hotel, it is required to develop quality and eco-friendly products. One of them is with the

innovation of noise control products made from raw materials derived from weaving fiber and coconut fiber having been widely available in the country.

IBP/kmb38

The turtle was found in a limp condition. It is suspected of running out of oxygen when caught in the net. As is known, Indonesia is the largest producer of coconut worldwide. There are 36 billion pieces produced, but the contribution to the world market is very small. So far, the players are India, the Philippines and Sri Lanka. This will be an opportunity for Indonesia. “We can optimize the utilization of natural fiber properties in

Indonesia to make various products. This is to reduce imported materials,” said Farri Aditya, the owner of PT Rekadaya Multi Adiprima (RMA) on Tuesday (Apr. 10) amid the Spring Meeting of the AM IMF-World Bank 2018 at the STP Bali. Farri said that to get quality and eco-friendly products, he cooperates with the Research

and Development Agency of Industry, Ministry of Industry and Industrial Agency within the Ministry of Industry, including with several state universities having the capacity as well as complete and modern testing facilities. In describing the plan, he has the motto ‘reduce pollution with waste and utilize natural resources.” (edi)

Focus on developing commodities having economic values DENPASAR — Anyar Sari central fruit market receives delivery of fruit and young coconut leaves from outside Bali reaching tons of volumes every day. Trucks, pickups and L300 vehicles are often seen dropping off fruits in the morning. A fruit merchant in the Anyar Sari Market, Jiono, 40, said that papaya and dragon fruit he sells are brought in from Banyuwangi and Lumajang. Every day he brings in two L300 pickup trucks or approximately 2 tons of papaya. The fruits are then purchased by retailers from other markets such as Kreneng Market, Badung Market, et cetera. Rudi, 38, another fruit merchant chimed in. Except mangosteen and oranges as Bali local fruits, he brought in other fruits such as watermelon, pineapple, mango and dragon fruit from outside Bali namely Banyuwangi, Jember and other region in Java. A watermelon merchant, Komang Indah, 41, admitted to indeed purchasing more watermelons from Banyuwangi and Jember. However, she prefers to sell products from Bali. According to her, the quality is better, more durable and the price is cheaper. Though the price of fruits from Java is cheaper, the cost of delivery makes the price to compete against local fruits of Bali. If the fruits are available in Bali, she usually purchases in Negara, Gianyar and Tabanan. “More supplies come from Banyuwangi and Jember, so that I purchase them from there,” she said when met on Tuesday (Apr. 11). Every day, a truck of watermelon is dropped off in front of her stall. One truck

contains about seven tons of watermelon. Previously, an economic observer from Udayana University, Prof. Wayan Ramantha, said that Bali’s dependency on products from outside Bali makes Bali’s economic growth not qualified. To reduce the dependency on products from outside Bali, the Head of the Bali Food Crops, Horticulture and Plantation Agency, I.B. Wisnuardhana, said that his agency has made several commodity development efforts. “For some commodities, we still depend on the regions outside Bali, especially from Banyuwangi for young coconut leaves, banana and coconut,” he explained. In the religious holiday season of the Hindus, Bali will be short of supplies. Although Bali gets supplies of agricultural commodities from outside Bali, primarily Java Island, Bali is actually not shortage of bananas. “Sometimes, people cultivate banana trees for their leaves so it reduces their fruits and so do coconuts. Local people also make use of the leaves so the fruit production reduces,” he said. This year, his agency does the rejuvenation of coconut trees in Buleleng across the area of 280 ha, in Jembrana area (200 ha) and Karangasem (250 ha). The agency

Poland demands Russia return 2010 presidential jet wreckage WARSAW - Poland’s President Andrzej Duda on Tuesday demanded that Russia hand over the wreckage of a 2010 presidential plane crash that has stoked friction with Moscow and divisions at home as Warsaw marked eight years since the disaster.

Anyar Sari central fruit market also provides ready-to-plant coconut seed of 17,600 pieces. Besides, farmers are given training to make coconut seeds. This seed will also be distributed to the existing lands by considering the availability of the land. “Every year, we gradually develop, including the expansion of the cultivation,” he added. Aside from facilitation to coconut, other commodities are also developed, such as coffee in Kintamani and Pupuan (Tabanan), sugarcane in Gerokgak (Buleleng), intensification of cashew in Kubu

(Karangasem). “Tobacco is also a commodity cultivated by farmers. The area of tobacco planting reaches 700 ha,” he said. Bali also has a commodity territorial mapping. For example, the highland areas are focused for cultivation of commodities such as vegetables and coffee. Karangasem is focused for the snakefruit development. Buleleng is focused on more fruit commodities such as durian, mango, et cetera. Tabanan is focused for mangosteen while Northern Badung for vegetables

and fruits. Clearly, the commodity having high economic value and the effort of the farmers become the priority of the development. “Bali is small. It is very difficult to cultivate everything. Coaching provision is focused on the superior commodities. It is impossible for us to become self-sufficient in all commodities,” he said jokingly. On that account, over the time the dependency of Bali on agricultural commodities can be reduced by degrees. (kmb42)

Decrease of volume of garbage going to landfill

President Lech Kaczynski and his wife Maria were among the 96 people who died in the crash in Smolensk, western Russia, on April 10, 2010. “The plane wreckage is probably the most important evidence in this case -- it’s still in Russia and the Russian authorities don’t want to hand it over,” Duda told Polish media. “One can only ask why the Russians don’t want to return the wreck,” he added, after laying floral tributes on the graves of Kaczynski and his wife in the southern Polish city of Krakow. Warsaw has repeatedly asked Moscow to hand over the wreckage and black boxes, but each time Russia has said it will only do so when its own inquiry is finished. Ties have been strained since the crash as well as Moscow’s 2014 annexation of Crimea from Ukraine, which prompted the EU to impose sanctions against Russia. The Kremlin responded with titfor-tat sanctions notably targeting Polish agricultural products. - Explosion? in memory of thousands of Polish army officers killed by Soviet secret police in 1940 -- a massacre the Kremlin denied until 1990. Poland’s governing rightwing Law and Justice (PiS) party, led by Kaczynski’s twin brother Jaroslaw, has long insisted the crash was no accident. The previous liberal government blamed bad weather and errors by the Polish pilots and two Russian air traffic controllers. In 2015, Polish prosecutors charged the former with “being directly responsible for having endangered air traffic” and the latter with “unintentionally causing an air traffic disaster”. Having rejected the conclusions of the earlier investigation as a cover-up, the PiS government launched its own probe using new investigators. They suggested last year that an explosion was likely to have caused the aircraft to break up in the air. Polish justice officials have also exhumed the remains of the victims to test for traces of explosives or combustion. Some 57 percent of Poles believe the crash was an accident, while 20 percent think it was an attack, according to a Pollster survey

BANGLI — The volume of garbage entering the Bangli regional landfill has declined over the past two years. According to the Bangli Environment Agency (DLH) this reduction in waste volume is thanks to the Adipura Desa competition program that they launched in 2014. Head of the DLH Bangli, Ida Ayu Yudi Sutha, said on Wednesday (Apr. 11) currently there are 150 cubic tons of garbage entering the Bangli Regional Landfill every day, which is 30 percent less than it was 2 years ago. “There used to be 180 cubic meters of garbage being dumped their everyday”, she said. The Adipura Desa competition that was launched in 2014, requires every village in Bangli to process

their own garbage and to sell what they can to waste banks and participating villages are encouraged to separate their organic garbage (which can be turned composted and turned into fertilizer) from their non-organic garbage (some of which can be sold to waste banks. “The decrease in the volume of waste going to landfill shows that the Adipura Desa program has been quite successful”, she explained. Despite their success in reduce the volume of garbage being brought to landfill, the DLK still faces another challenge. One of the conditions for winning the central government’s Adipura Kencana award is that garbage prodded methane gas be processed. “We do not have enough garbage to process

methane gas, but we are pursuing different options”, explained Sutha. The Landih regional landfill, she added that is managed by the DLH uses a sanitary landfill system and the garbage dumped there is collected form the town of Bangli. When asked about the landfill utilization plan that neighbouring districts have been discussing, Sutha said that it cannot be implemented in Landih because some of the neighbouring villages have rejected the plan as the area of the landfill is considered too small to accommodate the garbage of other districts. Ideally, she said, a multidistrict landfill should be at least 10-1 hectares. “The regional landfill in Bangli is only 4 hectares”, she said. (kmb40)

Polish leaders in Warsaw marked the eighth anniversary of the 2010 plane crash that killed 96 passengers including president Lech Kaczynski and his wife Maria. published Tuesday by the Super Express tabloid daily. Twenty-three percent have no opinion. EU President Donald Tusk, who served as Poland’s prime minister at the time of the crash, is due in

Warsaw later this month for questioning by prosecutors. The liberal Tusk, who is an archrival of PiS leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski, alleged he was being politically targeted by investigators

following a marathon eight hours of questioning in last August. Senior PiS politicians have accused him of “diplomatic treason” in connection with the previous investigation. (net)

RIYADH — Saudi Arabia faced a flurry of attempted attacks by Yemen’s rebels on Wednesday, with the kingdom’s defense forces saying they intercepted missiles that targeted Riyadh and another city, and drones targeting an airport and an Aramco oil facility in the country’s south. The attacks underscore how the Shiite rebels, known as Houthis, continue to retain a range of potentially lethal and disruptive ways to hit the kingdom, despite more than three years of devastating Saudi airstrikes on Yemen to try and roll back Houthi control of the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, and other northern strongholds. The strikes by the rebels in neighboring Yemen came just days before Saudi Arabia is to host heads of state and dignitaries for the annual Arab League summit, which will be held this year in the eastern Saudi city of Dammam. The location may have been selected by the kingdom to

avoid Houthi missile strikes during Sunday’s summit. Saudi state-run TV channel alEkhbariya carried an official statement saying the kingdom’s defense forces intercepted missiles fired at Riyadh and the southern city of Jizan. The Houthi-run al-Masirah TV channel said the ballistic missiles targeted the Saudi Defense Ministry in Riyadh, among other targets in the kingdom’s capital. An Associated Press reporter in Riyadh heard three loud explosions overhead just before sunset Wednesday. Other residents of the capital posted on social media similar accounts of hearing loud explosions and seeing smoke in the sky from the possible missile interception. Saudi forces said they also destroyed two Houthi drones targeting the cities of Jizan and the airport in Abha, also near the border with Yemen.

Saudi officials said flights were temporarily suspended at Abha airport in line with safety procedures. At least one Saudi media outlet reported a drone crash at the airport had injured two airport workers. The kingdom and its allies, with support from the United States, have been at war in Yemen since March 2015. More than 10,000 Yemenis have died in the conflict and millions in the impoverished country have been pushed to the brink of famine. Saudi coalition spokesman Turki al-Maliki accused rival Iran of being behind Wednesday’s attacks. He has previously warned that Saudi Arabia reserves the right to respond against Iran. Iran denies arming the rebels. Al-Masirah TV said the Houthis used a Qasef-1 drone to disrupt air traffic at Abha airport and to target a Saudi Aramco facility in Jizan in response to what it described as “Saudi-American crimes against Yemenis.” (net)

A Silicon Valley house that burned out two years ago is now on the market

The listing, which has already attracted criticism online, would appear to be a clear example of Silicon Valley’s overheated housing market. But the realtor behind the sale has defended the asking price, telling local media that the area and the land itself warrants it. The dilapidated and boarded-up house sits on a 5,800 square foot lot in San Francisco’s Bay Area, home to some of the country’s largest tech firms and start-ups. “If you are in the market, you know real estate, you know that this is what it’s worth and the buyers set the price,” realtor Holly Barr told KTVU-TV, who posted the listing on Facebook page Willow Glen Charm, named after the neighborhood where the home is located. The advertisement drew some angry comments, with one Facebook user writing “This is a joke, right?” and another asking “Who in their right mind would buy this?” Another commenter bet that the house would end up selling for more

than a million, while yet another simply wrote, “Why people are leaving California.” Area real estate data reveals this is not, in fact, out of the ordinary. “I’m not surprised at all,” Rick Smith, a board member of the Santa Clara County Realtors Association, told the TV station. He explained that houses in the immediate area are going for more than $1.5 million. Barr added that buying the severely damaged property and renovating it actually offers a cheaper option than purchasing a new home.

According to real estate company Zillow, the median home value in San Jose is $1,078,300. That’s up

23.9 percent over the past year, and is predicted to rise 8.4 percent over 2018. The fact that severe fire damage only bumped that average down to $800,000 says a lot about the area’s market, where available housing is sparse and residents prioritize proximity to their employment. Barr said she has already been contacted by 10 interested would-be buyers. Median house prices in the Bay Area have gone up for a record 70 straight months, according to CoreLogic Home Price Index. Home price appreciation in San Francisco between 2012 and 2017 was 84 percent, nearly double the national U.S. average of 45.4 percent. In neighboring Alameda and Solano counties, where price appreciation in that time was 93.8 percent and 95.6 percent respectively, you would’ve received better returns from

real estate than even the Dow Jones’ bull run of 87 percent during the same five-year period. NBC News reported that residential properties in San Jose gain nearly $571 in value every day, thanks to a shortage in houses for sale. Young people and those with families are finding themselves outpriced, even with well-paying tech sector jobs. CNBC reported in March that more California residents are moving out of the state than are moving in, due primarily to the high cost of living, including housing, and steep state taxes. The squeeze is so untenable for some that a rising number of people in the tech community are moving way out to find cheaper living setups — including to Bend, Oregon, recently named the most popular remote employee area in the state. Restaurant sales gain ground in March as consumers’ tax refunds roll in

IBP/net

Things could be looking up for the restaurant industry, especially for fast food chains. Despite higherthan-average snowfall and lower temperatures, sales at restaurants in March could show the secondhighest monthly same-store sales gain of the past two years, according to Baird’s David Tarantino. “We believe this acceleration at least partly reflects the timing of tax refunds,” he wrote in a research note Monday. Tarantino said that a

recent survey of private restaurants suggested that March sales were slightly better than those in February, January and the fourth quarter of 2017. However, less than half of the firm’s typical survey sample has been collected so far. “We believe chains that cater to lower-income consumers will see greater marginal demand improvement from individual income tax cuts than concepts catering to higher-income customers,” Taran-

tino wrote. He noted that Dunkin’ Donuts, McDonald’s, Texas Roadhouse and Jack in the Box, fit this profile. Tarantino said he expects sales across the industry to continue to accelerate as weather issues dissipate and more consumers take advantage of their tax cuts and returns. “We are optimistic about the outlook for restaurant stocks for the balance of 2018,” he wrote. Tourist Learn to Dance at Kakul Mas Studio, Batuan

Batuan village, Sukawati, Gianyar, deserves to be called a cultural tourism village. In addition to having beautiful nature, this village also keeps ‘gold’ as a source of traditional arts remaining to be inherited until now. Moreover, the ancient heritage at Desa and Puseh Temple can be a special attraction. So it’s not mistaken if the artists, foreign researchers and foreign tourists throng this village. For instance, some students from Melbourne, Australia, some time ago visited this village. They are Balinese culture lovers deliberately coming to Kakul Mas Dance Studio to know and learn more about the Balinese classical dances. “There are 15 tourists with student status that learned to dance in our house (Kakul Mas Dance Studio),” said I Ketut Wirtawan, an artist and trainer who is also the successor of the studio. The students coming at that time,

continued Wirtawan, have major in theater that want to deepen the Balinese arts, especially the art of gambuh operetta. The gambuh is a very complex ancient art, having the elements of motion art (dance), vocal and gamelan music. The most important is characterizations, so it is in accordance with their selected major. “The knowledge of Balinese dance is intended to enrich the theatrical studies they have,” he added.

These students studied for ten days and practiced for 2.5 hours a day. They know the Kakul Mas Dance Studio from his father, the late I Ketut Kantor. One of their lecturers had learned mask dance directly from the late I Ketut Kantor. Their lecturer then sent the students to get the fundamentals of Balinese classical dance from the successor of the late I Ketut Kantor. These students did not only learn to dance, but also tried to express

themselves by learning to dance, make a mask and know more about Balinese life. In practicing the dance, they are trained directly by Ketut Wirtawan, Wayan Artawa, Nyoman Juniati, Tut Nik and Wayan Darmawan. The class of making a mask is provided by Ketut Wirtawan. “Although the schedule is held by their campus, there are also students attending the program repeatedly on their personal account,” he said. Kakul Mas Dance Studio which is also the home of I Ketut Wirtawan’s family is natural remaining to refer to the kosala-kosali (Balinese geomancy) rules, commonly used in the making of Balinese house. Sesarin canang as an expression of people’s gratitude to God is often found in canang (oblation) offered by people when saying prayers. Nowadays, most people use banknotes placed on the canang sari. Sesari in the form of banknotes are rampantly used recently. When viewed from the development of times, the money used keeps changing in line with the times. At the same time, sesari also follows the development of times. Sesari or canang sari is not only offered while going to temple, many other religious activities also use sesari. Like the activity of nunas baos (consulting to medium), sesari is also used. Ni Madé Gerot, 70, a traditional healer (Balian) at Besakih, Rendang,

Karangasem, when met some time ago, told that pursuant to her experience during ngayah (paying devotional work), the use of banknotes as a sesari has begun since several years ago. She added that according to explanation of her senior figure, before using banknotes as sesari, there were several types of money used as sesari. Before the use of banknotes, sesari of canang used folded betel leaf completed with lime, tobacco, gambier, and betel nut. “Formerly, the folded betel leaf was used as sesarin canang, symbolizing a prostration of the community. Although currently using banknotes, the use of folded betel leaf can still be found in several places,” she said. He told that according to the story

why many foreign tourists often visit the house as a kind of tourist attraction. They come from various countries escorted by a tour guide. “There are always tourists making a visit here. They like to see traditional house as well as painting of Batuan style,” said Wirtawan. Ketut Wirtawan is often taken advantage as an object when painting on canvas. Indeed, in the matter of painting, Batuan village remains the same as in the past, preserving the painting of Batuan style. Other than being one of the successors of Gambuh operetta, Wirtawan is still actively scratching on canvas or paper as it has become a habit. (kmb)

Sesarin Canang, from Folded Betel Leaf to Banknotes of her senior figure, before using banknotes as we find today people used perforated coin. In 1963, the sesari in use included ringgit, rupiah (silver), as well as other coins of several denominations applied at that time. After that, the use of perforated coin began and lasts until now and the use of banknotes also develops. “Using rupiah money as sesari is indeed legitimate. However, the most important is the sincerity of people,” she explained. She hoped and reminded that as devotees both as people doing devotional services and general public, sesari is an offering. Actually, the money used sesari is perforated coin. It is the symbol of Shiva Sunya meaning sincerity. (kmb)

Syrian stranded at Malaysian airport for a month A Syrian man who’s been living in a Malaysian airport for more than a month told Sky News he fears he could be stranded there for years. Hassan al Kontar, 36, says he risks being arrested by Syrian authorities if he returns home after refusing to do military service. For the past 37 days he has been stuck in Kuala Lumpur airport, living on airline food and sleeping in the terminal. “I don’t know how long I will be here. I know of some Syrian

people who were stuck in the airport for a year,” he explained. “For the first seven days I was trying to clean myself somehow using the toilet facilities. “It’s so small and cold. “I can’t take a shower, I can’t dry my clothes if I’m going to wash them because it is an airport and there is no privacy.” He then tried to go to Cambodia but access was also denied. He first arrived in Malaysia in January 2017, overstaying his initial three-month visa, after

being deported from the United Arab Emirates. In UAE, he had been working in marketing and energy until the start of the Syrian war in 2011. From that point, he claims, as for many of his countrymen, his fortunes changed. “Since 2011, no-one wants us,” he said. “We are rejected, lonely, hated. “People look at us now as terrorists.” Stranded and with little money, he decided to try to get help by publishing online video

diaries from the airport. He has also spoken to UNHCR, who confirmed in a statement it had contacted Malaysian authorities over the case. Phil Robertson, Asia director at Human Rights Watch, called for the situation to be quickly resolved. He said: “Malaysia needs to demonstrate compassion and provide humanitarian assistance to Hassan al Kontar, and permit the UNHCR to have full access to him. “The government should en-

sure UNHCR is able to speedily and effectively interview him and adjudicate his claim for asylum. “If he’s found to be a refugee, it’s urgent that Malaysia permit him to seek third country resettlement without hindrance.”As yet, no timeframe has been given. So for now, Mr Kontar catches glimpses of home on airport TVs; images from the suspected chemical weapons attack on Douma and discussions of the possibility of fresh airstrikes. (afp)

Chemical watchdog OPCW backs UK findings as it confirms novichok poisoned Sergei Skripal

Independent chemical weapons scientists have confirmed that “high purity” novichok was used in the attempted murder of former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia. Tests carried out by experts from the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) showed the nerve agent was found in environmental samples collected in Salisbury. Blood tests also revealed that the chemical was found in blood samples taken from the Skripals and Detective Sergeant Nick Bailey, the police officer who first attended the scene. The report from the OPCW says the chemical was “high purity” with a complete absence of contaminants. Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson described the results as “conclusive”. Vladimir Uglev and he told Sky News he was willing to talk about his role in the novichok programme. “There can be no doubt what was used and there remains no alternative explanation about who was responsible - only Russia has the means, motive and record,” he said. The tests were carried out by

four independent laboratories affiliated with OPCW and samples were transported under a “full chain of custody”, the report said. It did not name novichok directly but said: “The results of the analysis by the OPCW designated laboratories of environmental and biomedical samples collected by the OPCW team confirms the findings of the United Kingdom relating to the identity of the toxic chemical that was used in Salisbury and severely injured three people.” Previous tests by military experts at the Porton Down laboratories in Wiltshire found that novichok, one of a group of deadly chemical compounds developed by the Soviet government in the 1970s and 1980s, was used in the poisoning.

IBP/net

Sergey and Yulia Skripal Russia has strongly denied both involvement in the poisoning and any production of novichok, challenging the UK assessment that the chemical was to blame. The OPCW was tasked with identifying

the chemical, not with attributing its origin or ascertaining blame for the poisoning. Russia earlier this month lost a bid to be included in the watchdog’s investigation. Responding to the report, Britain

called a session of the OPCW to discuss next steps. “We will now work tirelessly with our partners to help stamp out the grotesque use of weapons of this kind,” Boris Johnson said in his statement. (afp)

FLORIDA - The alleged gunman in the Valentine’s Day massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida wants to give any inheritance due him from his late mother’s estate to the victims’ families or an organization that will help the community heal, his attorneys said Wednesday.

Nikolas Cruz, 19, appeared at a hearing in Broward County Circuit Court in Fort Lauderdale to determine whether he is truly indigent or if he stands to collect up to $800,000 from his late mother’s estate and various other financial accounts in his name. It was previously determined that Cruz could not afford his own attorney and the Broward County Public Defender’s Office was appointed to represent him. Judge Elizabeth Scherer is attempting to determine if the public defender’s office should be dismissed from representing Cruz if

he has the means to afford a private attorney. Since his arrest on Feb. 14 in the killing of 17 people at the Parkland, Florida, high school, information has surfaced that Cruz might stand to inherit a small fortune. “Just so the court is aware, Mr. Cruz does not want those funds,” his attorney, Melissa McNiell of the public defenders office, told Judge Scherer during the hearing. “He would like that money donated to an organization that the victims families believe would be able to facilitate the healing in our community.” (net)

Finally Prabowo decides to contest presidential election

BOGOR - General Chairman of the Gerindra Party Prabowo Subianto finally announced his decision to run for the presidency in 2019 ending long speculation that he had decided to be a king maker. “In his speech, Prabowo said he accepted the mandate as a presidential candidate and asked for the formation of a coalition,” General Secretary of Gerindra, Ahmad Muzani, said in a written statement issued on Wednesday. Gerindra needs a coalition with other parties to meet requirement that a candidate needs to be backed up by at least 20 seats at the parliament. The Islamic Justice Prosperous Party (PKS) already agreed to coalesce with Gerindra to nominate Prabowo as a candidate to contest the presidential election. Together two parties have seats in the Parliament more than enough to meet the requirement. Ahmad Muzani said in the statement issued in Hambalang, West Java, Prabowo accepted the nomination on strong request of Gerindra cadres. “The National Meeting of the party on Tuesday determined the direction of national policy on recruitment and selection of candidates for legislator,” he said. There were thousands of party`s cadres urged Prabowo to contest the

presidential election, he said. The national meeting was also attended by General Chairman of the National Mandate Party (PAN) Zulkifli Hasan, General Chairman of PKS Sohibul Iman, General Chairman of the Nation Awakening Party (PKB) Muhaimin Iskandar and Amien Rais, the founder of PAN. Prabowo would most likely face incumbent President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) or a repeat of 2014 presidential election in which he lost to Jokowi. Prabowo already lost in presidential election in 2009 in which he was candidate for vice president as a running mate of Megawaty Soekarnoputri. Based on a number of surveys Jokowi will emerge as a winner if election is held today. The president leads over other potential presidential hopefuls including Prabowo.(afp)

Central Aceh develops wild elephant ecotourism TAKENGON - Central Aceh District government has started to see the development of wild elephant ecotourism in Karang Ampar, Ketol Sub-district, due to its high population. Head of Development of Tourism Destination at the Tourism of Youth and Sport Office of Central Aceh, Munawar Khalil, said here on Wednesday that his side has developed the ecotourism program plan by utilizing wild elephants in Karang Ampar region. Ecotourism, which will be developed, is expected to be a reliable tourism activity to attract tourists to visit the area, he noted. The program is a tourism activity which prioritizes environmental insights and aspects of nature conservation for learning and educational purposes, and incorporates them to empower the socioeconomic culture of local communities. “The existence of a bunch of wild elephants in the Karang Ampar area is often a disturbance to

the activities of local people. Hopefully, in the next year, the area will be used as ecotourism area,” he asserted. Khalil further remarked that it is a big challenge for tourist sites to utilize the presence of wild elephants as a great opportunity to lure visitors. “It will be a great achievement if we can utilize what we have now,” he added. He believes the existence of wild elephants can make Karang Ampar region a popular tourist attraction. In the near future, the officials will also conduct a review of

Karang Ampar area in Ketol subdistrict in order to prepare everything for planning the ecotourism program. “We will bring the consultant to Karang Ampar to arrange Detailed Engineering Design (DED) of the area. Hopefully, we can start the construction of basic infrastructure there in 2019,” he explained. In addition, Karang Ampar area also has a beautiful natural landscape, with the river and various flora and fauna, which supports it to be developed into a mainstay tourist destination. (ant)

JAYAPURA - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has observed the distribution of 3,331 land certificates to people in Jayapura, Papua Province, as the legal ownership letter of the land. “Let me count all the certificates. The certificate is a legal land ownership proof owned by the public. I have asked the minister to accelerate the land certification program in all regions of Indonesia,” the president said here on Wednesday. Jokowi attended the land certificates distribution in Jayapura Head District Office of Gunung Merah Sentani during his working visit to Papua Province. According to Minister of Agrarian and Spatial Sector Sofyan Djalil, 2,058 people attended the certificate distribution. From 3,331 certificates that were distributed, 767 certificates were for Kerom District, 768 certificates were for Jayapura District, and 463 certificates were distributed to the people of Jayapura City.

Meanwhile, the government also distributed certificates to other districts, such as Sarmi, Biak Numfor, Merauke, Jayawijaya, Yapen Islands, Nabire, and Mimika. The president also reminded people to maintain the condition of the certificates. He also reminded the owners to calculate the payment when the people wanted to use the certificate as the collateral to a bank to gather venture capital. During his speech, Jokowi also asked people to maintain peace and calm ahead of the head regional election in 2018 and the general election year in 2019. In 2017, the government had distributed 70 thousand land certificates to the people of Papua. The ministry targets to add another 20 thousand certificates in 2018. Jokowi will conduct a working visit to Papua from April 11 to 13, 2018. He also plans to visit a remote area in Asmat District to observe the recovery efforts of malnutrition and measles cases in the area. (ant)

Buffon rages as Ronaldo’s late penalty puts Real into semi-finals

Gianluigi Buffon’s Champions League career looks likely to end in a red mist of rage after Cristiano Ronaldo’s late penalty on Wednesday rescued Real Madrid from a pulsating Juventus comeback. Buffon’s anger earned him a red card from English referee Michael Oliver, moments before Ronaldo slammed a 97th-minute penalty into the top corner to send Real into the semi-finals. Oliver’s decision was not as poor as Buffon claimed. Mehdi Benatia’s challenge on Lucas Vazquez had been clumsy, from behind and a desperate attempt to stop the Spaniard finishing from five yards. But Juve had made the impossible possible, having cancelled out a 3-0 deficit from the first leg, to lead by the same scoreline at the Santiago Bernabeu. Buffon, who has racked up 125 Champions League appearances but never won the competition, could not contain his frustration as Ronaldo’s goal made the aggregate score 4-3. “This referee has no heart, he has a garbage bag instead of a heart,” Buffon told Italian channel Mediaset Premium after the match. “If you do not have personality and courage, you should go to the stands to watch the match with your wife and a Sprite.” Benatia controversially likened the penalty decision to being “raped”. Amidst the swarm of Juventus players surrounding Oliver, and Buffon at the front of them,

Ronaldo kept his cool. This was a record-strecthing 11th consecutive Champions League game in which he has scored. “I do not understand why they protest against the penalty,” Ronaldo told beIN Sports. “If he did not commit the foul, Lucas would have scored. During the game, Benatia and the rest of them had already been kicking us from behind. But we are happy and we are in the semi-finals.” Real coach Zinedine Zidane was more sympathetic towards Buffon. “He did not deserve that,” Zidane said. “But we cannot change it. It will not take away everything he has done, even if it’s a shame to end his Champions League career this way.” Mario Mandzukic set Juve on their way with a goal after 76 seconds -- the fastest Real have ever conceded in this competition -- and then scored again before half-time with another header at the back post. When Keylor Navas fumbled Douglas Costa’s cross on the hour, allowing Blaise Matuidi

But Oliver blew, Buffon exploded and Ronaldo hit the net. “It leaves a bitter taste,” Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri said. “Because we have not had the chance to take the game to extratime. In view of the two legs both teams would have deserved to move on to the next phase.” Real, meanwhile, edge one step closer to claiming an un-

precedented third consecutive Champions League triumph, a fourth in five years. They join Bayern Munich, who knocked out Sevilla, Liverpool and Roma in Friday’s semi-final draw. “What I did not expect is in minute one to score a goal,” Zidane said. “By conceding the goal after a minute, you drop your head and give them life. Then they played a good game -- they were good and we were bad.” Gareth Bale perhaps paid the heaviest price. Bale had been

handed his first Champions League start since September by Zidane but the Welshman was hauled off at half-time, with his team 2-0 down. Casemiro also made way as Marco Asensio and Vazquez came on. “Something had to change,” Zidane said. “I was not happy with the approach, it was not to punish Gareth or Casemiro. “ “We have changed a little more the dynamics, with Lucas and Marco giving us a little more energy. We had to do it.” (afp)

Bayern Munich hold off Sevilla to reach Champions League semifinals Bayern Munich are through to the Champions League semifinals for the seventh time in nine years after a 0-0 draw in their quarterfinal second leg with Sevilla. The stalemate at the Allianz Arena means Bayern’s 2-1 first-leg win in Spain last week was enough for them to progress to the last four, extending their impressive recent record in this competition. It was far from a vintage Bayern display as they were kept from scoring in the opening 45 minutes for only the third time in 50 games while they also were denied victory on home soil for just the third time this season. For Sevilla, it could have been different had Joaquin Correa’s header gone in instead of hitting the crossbar, but in truth a comeback never looked likely. They also ended with 10 men when Correa’s evening got worse after a late tackle on Javi Martinez saw him dismissed. The Rojiblancos, aiming for a repeat of their

second-leg success at Manchester United in the last round, would have been keen for a fast start, but they could have been down to 10 men as early as the second minute. Robert Lewandowski was sent clear but was taken out by Gabriel Mercado, who was fortunate to see Scottish referee Willie Collum brandish a yellow when it could have been a red, with James Rodriguez flashing the free kick just over the bar. Vincenzo Montella’s men, perhaps boosted by their reprieve, began to settle and had chances to draw level, but Pablo Sarabia blasted the best of them over when he had time and space. Bayern, crowned Bundesliga champions for a 28th time at the weekend, were below their best but they ended the first half strongly and were twice close to putting the tie to bed. First defender Mats Hummels came within inches of breaking the deadlock with a curling effort that

winger attempted to get on the end of a Cristiano Ronaldo header back across the area. Referee Michael Oliver was immediately surrounded by Juventus players, with Gianluigi Buffon sent off before the spot kick could even be taken. Ronaldo made no mistake from the spot, and Los Blancos earned a 4-3 aggregate win to make their way into the Champions League semi-finals. The outcome brought about plenty of anger from the Juventus side. Buffon launched an astonishing broadside on referee Oliver while Giorgio Chiellini and Juventus president Andrea Agnelli both

either hinted at or flatly accused the match officials of some kind of bias. But as it turns out their words to the media were simply a continuation of their frustrations, which came to a head in the tunnel following the match. The confrontation saw Chiellini claiming that Madrid’s players had bought the referee (as he already had said on the pitch) and other members of the team confronting the match officials and members of the Spanish side. “The Juventus players were furious and they tried to make Real players to pay for it,” a source told Goal. Sergio Ramos, who was sus-

pended for Wednesday’s match, was in the tunnel after the clash and played peacekeeper, helping calmer heads prevail before the confrontation turned into something more. And even with his work to try and stop a brawl between the two teams, Ramos’ presence in the tunnel could cause another issue for Madrid. Having been suspended from the match, the defender was seen watching the end of the match from the tunnel, with Spanish radio outlet COPE reporting that Oliver even noted Ramos’ presence in the tunnel in his post-match report, meaning the 32-year-old

could face another suspension from UEFA should they find that he was in breach of the rules concerning suspended players being on the pitch. Xabi Alonso was handed a onematch ban for stepping on the field to celebrate with his team-mates after the 2014 Champions League final, and UEFA could take a similar view of Ramos’ situation. However, Goal understands that Real Madrid are not at all concerned about a ban for Ramos because he never actually set foot on the turf of the field, with the club believing that there is no rule stating that he can’t be in the tunnel. just went wide and then Franck Ribery forced David Soria into a save with a curling effort. It was more of the same after the break as Lewandowski headed wide at the far post while Thomas Muller again tested Soria’s handling. Sevilla had not been troubling Bayern in the same way after the restart but they almost drew level on aggregate just before the hour. From Ever Banega’s enticing free-kick, Correa climbed highest and his header left home goalkeeper Sven Ulreich rooted to the spot but the ball crashed into the crossbar and to safety. That ought to have been the start of an onslaught, but it never came as Bayern saw the game out with relative ease. Steven Nzonzi blasted over for Sevilla when he should have done better and it was all over when Correa took an early bath for a nasty challenge on Martinez as their impressive European run ended. Japan’s newly appointed national football head coach Akira Nishino attends a press conference at JFA headquarters in Tokyo on April 12, 2018. Japan appointed the 63-year-old veteran coach on April 9 after sensationally dumping Vahid Halilhodzic only two months before the World Cup tournament in Russia.

Japan’s new football coach said Thursday he was aiming to get the Blue Samurai out of a tricky World Cup group, days after being parachuted in as an “emergency measure”. “I want to get through the first round, of course. I think we will be fully competitive and will be able to challenge,” Akira Nishino told a packed press conference in Tokyo. Japan have a tough group in Russia this summer, drawn against Colombia, Poland and Senegal. Nishino, 63, was drafted in on Monday as an “emergency measure” -- in the words of the Japan Football Association boss -- just two months before the team kicks off its World Cup campaign. He takes over from Vahid Halilhodzic, who was sensationally axed after some disappointing results in recent friendlies despite taking the team to their sixth successive World Cup finals. Nishino said he wanted the team to play in an “attacking” spirit, adding that he would select the squad with that in mind. (afp)

(ant)

IBP/net

(kmb)

The plane crash occurred as the Polish delegation was heading to a ceremony in Russia’s Katyn forest

in memory of thousands of Polish army officers killed by Soviet secret police in 1940 -- a massacre the Kremlin denied until 1990.

(kmb40)

(kmb45)
