No charges expected for One Direction star in LA airport scuffle LOS ANGELES - One Direction singer Louis Tomlinson is not expected to be criminally charged over a tussle with a photographer at Los Angeles airport last month, judicial officials said on Tuesday.

The British singer and the photographer, who was not named, will instead be summoned to the Los Angeles City Attorney’s office to be interviewed and “advised of the law and ways to avoid similar incidences in the future,” the City Attorney’s office said in a statement.

“Typically there is no further action taken by our office after the hearing,” the statement said.

The City Attorney’s office said both parties would be asked attend the meeting toward the end of this month. It said it reserved the right to file charges for up to one year.

Tomlinson, 25, one of the members of the chart-topping boy band, was arrested at the airport on March 3 after a scuffle with a paparazzi photographer who was trying to take photos of the singer and his girlfriend.

Social media video showed the photographer on the ground and Tomlinson was booked for misdemeanor battery.

Tomlinson’s lawyer, Martin Singer, said at the time that the singer was not at fault and that the paparazzi caused the altercation.

Tomlinson’s representatives could not immediately be reached for comment on Tuesday. (rtr)

The spokeswoman for the Federal Prosecutors, who handle probes into suspected terrorism, said investigators had found three letters near the scene of the attack, all with the same content suggesting a possible Islamist motive.

SEMARAPURA - Coinciding with full moon of Balinese tenth month, Tuesday (Apr. 11), residents of Sema Agung customary village, Tusan, Banjarangkan, undertook melasti procession to Tegal Besar Beach, Negari. The ritual was held in the series of Ngusaba Desa at local village. However, the melasti ritual held is different. The residents participating in the melasti procession brought tektekan (bamboo split drum) and put on a hat of green coconut leaf.

While cheering, residents hit the bamboo split drum along the coastal road of Tegal Besar to generate tektekan sound.

Tektekan is believed by citizens as the gong of god. Residents also believe that tektekan is used to dismiss miseries or a kind of ritual to dismiss pest and diseases. But over the time, the use of tektekan is equipped with bamboo fire blower and gamelan.

“Historically, this tradition has been indeed inherited from our ancestors. According to them, in the past the tektekan was trusted to dismiss calamities like in the nangluk merana ritual,” said the priest of Dalem Penyarikan Puseh Bale Agung Temple of Sema Agung, Ketut Purna, last Tuesday.

He told there are 75 pieces of tektekan brought by residents. They are created at people’s home. Once completed, they are collected at Dalem Penyarikan Temple to be ritually activated (pasupati). The making of such bamboo split drum or tektekan is done in turn by customary villagers. Currently, the tektekan is made by residents of Kawan hamlet, while the ritual is organized by Kanginan hamlet.

Spine manipulation might help with low back pain

PORTLAND - Spinal manipulation therapy may work as well for easing lower back pain as anti-inflammatory medications, a research review concludes.

Based on data from 15 previously conducted trials involving a total of 1,711 adults, the study team found that spinal manipulation achieved meaningful reductions in pain and improvements in function after six weeks of treatment.

The effect on pain was modest, and similar to what other studies have found with non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDS).

“Most doctors and patients have a good sense of what NSAIDs do work great in some patients, don’t seem to work much at all in others, work somewhat in many more,” said senior study author Dr. Paul Shekelle of the West Los Angeles Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

“I think spinal manipulation therapy is much the same,” Shekelle said by email.

Lower back pain is one of the leading causes of disability and doctor visits for adults worldwide.

It often goes away within a few weeks. But when it persists, lower back pain might be treated with spinal manipulation, medications like painkillers or muscle relaxers, heat, exercise or physical therapy.

Spinal manipulation is often done by chiropractors but may also be offered by physical therapists or physicians. It can include manually moving joints, massage and exercise. This type of treatment is designed to relieve pressure on joints and curb inflammation and it’s often used for back, neck or shoulder pain as well as for headaches.

For the current study, Shekelle and colleagues focused on the gold standard for determining the effectiveness and safety of medical treat-

ments: randomized controlled trials that compare outcomes for patients who are randomly assigned to a specific treatment or to a dummy treatment or none at all.

In an analysis of data from 15 trials, they found spinal manipulation offered a meaningful reduction

of pain within six weeks. Based on a review of 12 trials, the researchers also found spinal manipulation associated with statistically meaningful improvements in functional abilities.

None of the trials uncovered serious side effects of spinal manipulation. However, minor side effects like pain, muscle stiffness and headache were common.

One limitation of the analysis

is that the original studies included in the review had a wide variety of designs, involved various kinds of providers with different training and compared spinal manipulation to assorted other types of treatment, the authors note.

Themis’s product, which is based on measles immunization technology, is the first vaccine containing attenuated, or weakened, live virus to reach the human testing phase.

Dolphins considered as ‘pest’

AMLAPURA — In the past two weeks, fishermen at Bugbug village, Karangasem subdistrict, are made dizzy. It happened because the dolphin usually befriending with human chiefly fishermen is now even harms many fishermen along the coastline of Bugbug village. Lately, the dolphins often appearing in local waters savor the fish commonly caught by fishermen.

A local fisherman, Ketut Wiryawan, said on Tuesday (Apr. 11) that this April is supposed to be a ‘harvest season’ for local fishermen. In a normal situation, fishermen can catch 50-100 fish a day during peak season. However, with the emergence of increasingly many dolphins, the catch of fishermen drastically drops. Moreover, they can go home in empty hands.

“More seriously, the dolphins also damage our nets and fishing rods. Right now, the dolphins even become a pest to us,” said the fisherman of Sari Wahyu Samudera Bali fishermen group of Bugbug customary village.

In this kind of situation, local fisherman is made frustrated in the past two days. Their boats are forced to be parked on the beach, and then shifted profession into market laborer and unskilled laborer. They do it in order to still support their family.

Another fisherman, Nengah Supatra, also complained about the same condition. He admitted to have not gone to sea in the past week amid the harvest season of swordfish as it happens today. Many other fishermen also choose not to go to sea because their operating cost to go to sea is quite high. “We do not know how long this dolphin will disturb us. Moreover, their number increases in the waters around our catching area,” he said.

Both fishermen said if the situation is possibly caused by excessive population of dolphins. Thus, they are now having trouble in finding food and then savor the fish commonly caught by fishermen in the waters around the Bugbug village. In the past, there was also similar condition caused by dolphins, but not as severe as today, making harvest season into bad season. These fishermen do not know whether the emergence of many dolphins have something to do with psychical issues. Bugbug customary village has not addressed

BI and criminal investigation unit curb illegal foreign exchange business in Bali

DENPASAR - The relaxation deadline to submit the permit for illegal non-bank foreign exchange business activities (KUPVA BB) to Bank Indonesia (BI) ended on April 7. On Monday (Apr. 10), central office of Bank Indonesia together with the criminal investigation unit came down to curb illegal nonbank foreign exchange businesses.

“Until the specified time limit, starting today we curb against the KUPVA,” said Team Leader of the Economic and Finance Advisory of the BI for Bali Representatives Office, Teguh Setiadi.

Based on data of Bank Indonesia for Bali Representative Office, there are 70 illegal non-bank foreign exchange businesses. Unfortunately, the enforcement activities

were not allowed to be covered by media. It happens because his agency is still searching for an effective pattern to curb the non-bank foreign exchange businesses.

He said that the illegal non-bank foreign exchange business will be affixed with sticker to indicate if they are illegal. If the sticker is opened, then the business owner will be charged with criminal suit.

Although in Bali there are 70 illegal non-bank foreign exchange businesses, it is predicted many more such illegal businesses remain to operate primarily in the area of Kuta, Seminyak and Sanur. In Indonesia, the largest illegal nonbank foreign exchange business is found in Lhokseumawe amounting to 127 units.

All this time, those illegal nonbank foreign exchange businesses operating for years have committed frauds that harm foreign travelers.

“It is our concerns. If licensed, they will surely not dare to commit frauds. So, at the time of the transaction, the exchange rates displayed on the board is accordance with the transactions. Thus, we lead to consumer protection. Moreover, if the consumers are foreign travelers, it can tarnish the image of tourism,” he explained.

Although the permit has no validity period, it can be revoked if the owners do not fulfill the obligations of the non-bank foreign exchange businesses and they are inactive.

“This morning (Monday—Ed) I revoke a permit due to inactivity,”

he said.

Based on the data as of January 31, there are 142 head offices and 545 branch offices of licensed nonbank foreign exchange businesses in Bali. Admittedly, there are some non-bank foreign exchange businesses that applied for a permit to BI lately and are still being processed. However, four applications of such business are rejected.

“Since we see that some nonbank foreign exchange businesses have been given permission, so in accordance with the provisions they have obligations to submit a report to BI and deliver transactions to the Indonesian Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK). If they do not comply with the rules, we summon

and provided them with coaching first,” he explained. The obligation of reporting is meant to view suspicious transactions related to terrorism or drug trafficking.

Chief of BI for Bali Representative Office, Causa Iman Karana, said that the role of customary village is very important in preventing the growth of illegal nonbank foreign exchange businesses.

According to him, people need to understand about maintaining the positive image of tourism. The nonbank foreign exchange business is one of the tourism components whose image should be maintained.

SINGARAJA - Dozens of hectares of farmland at Pancasari village, Sukasada, are still submerged in the overflowing water of Lake Buyan. Such condition caused losses worth billions of rupiahs.

Field extension officers (PPL) of Buleleng Agriculture Agency in charge of Pancasari, I Wayan Suja, explained that it has lasted nearly for two months, and the submerged land is still quite large, namely spreading across of about 25 hectares. Until now, there are no indications of the water to recede. In fact, it happens on the contrary. “So far, the lake water has not receded.

Instead there is a tendency of rising with the height of 1 cm every day,” he said on Tuesday (Apr. 11).

The lands, he said, are planted with strawberries and some vegetables like tomato. Due to being submerged and leading to crop failure, the losses are not avoidable.

Based on the data collection, it reached approximately IDR 1.5 billion. “For one hectare of strawberries, the losses can reach IDR 200 million, while the losses of vegetables can be less. Total losses can reach billions,” he said.

Faced with such conditions, farmers are ascertained not to cultivate their land in the near future. To keep earning, some farmers are choosing to farm at another location near the hills. “For the land cultivation, it is still difficult to predict. It still rains frequently,” said Suja.

Meanwhile, the Horticulture Division Head of the Buleleng Agriculture Agency, I Gede Subudi, stated that when compared to five years ago, the current overflowing water is not too severe. Baby kidnapper arrested in South Sulawesi

DENPASAR - A team of Directorate of General Criminal Investigation Unit of Bali Police arrested the kidnapper of baby with the initials CEP (8 months) at Wadula village, Tuwoti, East Luwu, South Sulawesi, on Tuesday (Apr. 11).

The culprit is Ni Ketut Na and she was arrested at her cousin’s house.

Director of General Criminal Investigation Unit, Sang Made Mahendra, said that the disclosure of the case started from the report of victim’s mother to the integrated police services (SPKT) of Bali police on January 26.

“The reported is Ni Ketut Nariani,” he said last Tuesday.

It was then followed up by investigation, examination of witnesses and crime scene investigation. After three months of hunting down the culprit, police finally managed to track down the culprit, namely in South Sulawesi. “We immediately order our personnel to pursue to the location,” said this former chief of criminal investigation unit of Makassar police.

The team led by Trijoko Widianto immediately left for South Sulawesi, and on Tuesday at 15:30 the culprit could be arrested. Meanwhile, the victim was found in the house in a healthy

A week later, the victim’s sister came from Java to pick up her, including her baby. “However, she was prohibited by the culprit and even asked for compensation worth IDR 1 billion. It was then bargained and agreed at the amount of IDR 25 million,” he said.

Since she had not got the money, the victim’s mother was advised to move by the boarding house owner to avoid commotion, while the baby was taken by the culprit. “A few days later, the victim’s mother came to the boarding house. In fact, the culprit and the baby were not found at the boarding house. So, she immediately reported the case to police station,” said Mahendra. (kmb36)

SCARBOROUGH SHOAL - For Filipino fishermen, a trip to the Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea is an uncomfortable one at the best of times.

Hours working in the scorching sun, a monotonous diet of rice, spam and fish, sometimes for weeks, all the while watching for tropical storms that could wreck their modest wooden boats.

For a team of Reuters landlubbers making a reporting trip to the disputed shoal, there were other challenges - the lack of any toilets apart from the sea, sleeping wedged on the open deck, and most of all, the constant worry that the Chinese coastguard would try to drive us away.

Five years after China forcibly blockaded the rich waters from all but its own fishermen, the visit last week confirmed that Beijing had made concessions. Philippine vessels were allowed to fish again, and small boats could enter the lagoon.

But while an international panel last year ruled the shoal should be freely fished by all, China’s coastguard was still clearly calling the shots.

Alerted to our presence by Chinese fishermen holding cameras and two-way radios, a coastguard vessel sped towards us before losing track of our boat in the mass of similar looking craft surrounding

the prized fishing grounds.

Months in planning, the 200km (124-mile) journey from the Philippine coast to the shoal took 18 hours in a narrow, 12m (40ft) fishing boat.

Earlier trips had to be cancelled when storms made the crossing too dangerous. On this journey a second vessel was hired to accompany us as a precaution against bad weather or breakdowns.

Space was limited on rudimentary wooden boats that are steadied by bamboo cane outriggers held together by reams of fishing line.

There’s no power, and no roof, just a tarpaulin sheet to shelter from the rain and sun.

Enough water, canned meat, rice and fuel were brought to last a week in case bad weather stranded us at the shoal. For journalists, there’s also cameras, tripods, life jackets, as well as a satellite phone and small generator to charge batteries.

LIFE IN WATERWORLD Our boats approached the area at daybreak. It is an oasis in a desert of water, a huge flotilla of fishing vessels far away from home, lined up with bows pointing towards the

bright green shoal.

In the distance, a Chinese coastguard ship guarded the mouth of the reef, preventing the larger boats from entering.

China and the Philippines have sparred for decades over ownership of this prized lagoon, but with relations improved, Filipino boats now anchor alongside Chinese vessels.

We watched as barefooted men in leggings, long-sleeves, caps and gloves trade freely with each other.

Using hand signals, they swap cigarettes or fish, in scenes reminiscent of “Waterworld”, the 1995 Kevin Costner film, where polar ice caps have melted and post-apocalyptic tribes live on boats.

We joined fishermen riding small boats over the damaged coral wall of the lagoon, careful to avoid disrupting men inside who cast nets or spear for fish. Interviews were conducted with masked divers treading water, and we snorkel over the reef with a waterproof camera, checking out the coral and sealife.

The Chinese boats are robust, and luxurious compared with those of the Filipinos, some of which are barely more than rafts.

Clothes and drying fish were hung from the ropes that hold these craft together, the smell overpowered by diesel fumes. Makeshift wire cages of live lobsters trailed behind.(rtr)

SEOUL - South Korea’s frontrunner for the country’s upcoming May 9 presidential election Moon Jae-in said on Wednesday he will immediately push to have a supplementary budget drafted if he is elected.

In a speech on his economic pledges, Moon said he will aim for investment in 10 key sectors and expects to create over 500,000 new jobs per year on average.

Moon did not specify an amount for the pledged supplementary budget.

NUCLEAR POWER No matter who is elected as South Korea’s new leader next month it is clear that coal and nuclear power generation will likely be scaled back, with most of the candidates laying out plans on Wednesday to address public concerns over pollution and safety.

Less than a month from a May 9 election to replace impeached president Park Geun-hye, policy experts outlined in a forum the energy proposals of four of the five contenders.

The two leading candidates, liberal front-runner Moon Jae-In and centrist Ahn Cheol-soo, both plan to lower South Korea’s reliance on coal and nuclear power, pointing to a need to shift to renewable energy, according to their policy advisors.

In the latest poll by Gallup Korea, Moon got the support of 38 percent of respondents, and Ahn got 35 percent.

South Korea, Asia’s fourthlargest economy, gets 40 percent of its electricity from coal, 30 percent from nuclear, 20 percent from natural gas, and the rest from

oil and renewables.

But policy changes are expected amid growing concerns over pollution and the safety of nuclear energy, and Moon and Ahn appear determined to help drive them.

“We should move away from coal and nuclear power, and shift to clean or renewable energy-based platforms,” said Kim Jwa-kwan, head of Moon’s energy policy team.

Kim said his team planned for nuclear and coal power to account for 18 percent and 15 percent respectively of power supply by 2030, while the contribution of liquefied natural gas (LNG) would increase to 37 percent to support the rise of renewables.

If elected, Moon also “would scrap a plan to build Shin Kori No.5 and Shin Kori No.6 nuclear reactors on which construction began last year and revamp the country’s nuclear power expansion scheme,” Kim said.

That means South Korea’s plan to build 11 nuclear reactors by 2029 could be under threat.

Ahn would similarly shelve a plan to construct four coal-fired power plants and not extend the lifespan of ageing coal and nuclear power stations, said Oh Jeong-Rye, deputy director of Ahn’s People Party. Both candidates target a 20 percent renewable energy share by 2030 as part of efforts to cut carbon emissions.

Under the current power supply plan, in addition to building 11 nuclear reactors by 2029 - three of which are already under construction - South Korea plans to add 20 more coal-fired power plants by 2022. (rtr)

IMF leader Lagarde warns against trade protectionism

WASHINGTON — The head of the International Monetary Fund says that after six years of disappointing growth, the world economy is finally gaining momentum. But she warns of a number of potential threats, ranging from political uncertainty in Europe to protectionism that could hinder global trade.

IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde says that there is a critical need for more international cooperation, not less. Restricting trade flows would be a “self-inflicted wound” that would harm workers and consumers, she says. In the text of a speech to be delivered in Brussels on Wednesday, Lagarde did not single out any country for specific criticism on the issue of protectionism. But in his campaign, President Donald Trump vowed to impose punitive tariffs on goods from countries he believes harm American workers by flouting global trade rules.

Trump has threatened to impose tariffs as high as 45 percent on goods from China and Mexico unless those nations stop practices he says violate trade laws.

Resorting to protectionism would have a number of consequences, from disrupting supply chains for domestic companies to inflating prices that companies and consumer must pay, Lagarde said. A better approach would be for countries running large trade surpluses and those running deficits to cooperate in pursuing policies to deal with the imbalances, she said.

“Cooperation means working together to ensure that countries observe a level playing field,” Lagarde said.

In her prepared remarks, Lagarde

gave a preview of next week’s spring meetings in Washington of the 189nation IMF and its sister lending organization, the World Bank. The United States will be represented at the discussions by Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen.

Lagarde said that the discussions are taking place at a time when prospects for the global economy are improving after struggling for six years to emerge from the severe downturn triggered by the worst financial crisis since the 1930s.

“The good news is that after six years of disappointing growth, the world economy is gaining momentum as a cyclical recovery holds out the promise of more jobs, higher incomes and greater prosperity going forward,” Lagarde said the speech to be delivered at Bruegel, an economic research institute in Brussels.

Lagarde cited stronger manufacturing activity in advanced economies and continued robust gains in emerging economies, which she said will provide more than three-fourths of expected global growth in 2017.

One of the reasons for optimism is a rebound in the price of commodities which have brought relief to many low-income countries.

World trade seen growing 2.4 percent in 2017, uncertainty weighs - WTO

GENEVA - World trade is on track to expand by 2.4 percent this year, though there is “deep uncertainty” about economic and policy developments, particularly in the United States, the World Trade Organization (WTO) said on Wednesday. WTO director-general Roberto Azevedo said that clarity was still needed on U.S. President Donald Trump’s trade policies, while making a general appeal to resist protectionism.

The results of upcoming elections in major economies including France should provide more predictability for investors, he said.

The range for growth this year has been adjusted to between 1.8 and 3.6

percent, from 1.8 to 3.1 percent last September, the WTO said.

“We should see trade as part of the solution to economic difficulties, not part of the problem,” Azevedo said.

“Overall I think that while there are some reasons for cautious optimism, trade growth remains fragile and there are considerable risks on the downside. Much of the uncertainty around the outlook is political,” he told a news conference.

“We need to keep strengthening the system, delivering new reforms, and resisting the erection of new barriers to trade.” The WTO has repeatedly revised preliminary estimates over the past five years as predictions of economic recovery

prove overly optimistic. Global trade grew by “an usually low” 1.3 percent in 2016, the slowest pace since the financial crisis, failing to match even its revised forecast of 1.7 percent of last September.

“The poor performance over the year was largely due to a significant slowdown in emerging markets where imports basically stagnated last year, barely growing in volume terms,” Azevedo said. In 2018, global trade is forecast to grow by between 2.1 percent and 4 percent in WTO’s latest analysis.

“A spike in inflation leading to higher interest rates, tighter fiscal policies and the imposition of measures to curtail trade could all

undermine higher trade growth over the next two years,” it warned.

Trump has made reducing U.S. trade deficits a key focus of his economic agenda to try to grow American manufacturing jobs. He has taken particular aim at renegotiating trade relationships with China and Mexico.

He is considering an executive order to launch a trade investigation that could lead to supplemental duties in certain product categories, a Trump administration official told Reuters on Monday.

“If policymakers attempt to address job losses at home with severe restrictions on imports, trade cannot help boost growth and may even

constitute a drag on the recovery,” Azevedo said.

He awaited confirmation of the new U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) nominee Richard Lighthizer - who has pledged an “America First” strategy to aggressively enforce U.S. laws and trade deals to stop unfair imports and push China to scrap excess factory capacity.

“We are waiting to see the new trade team really in place, waiting for the new USTR to be confirmed so that we can have a more meaningful dialogue at this point in time we don’t have that. We are still waiting to see how the trade policy itself is going to shape up in the United States.”(rtr)

Local community leader, Nengah Sudana, explained that although the hot springs have been there for a long time, it used ot be very hard to get there due to the severly damaged road that led to them. Since 2014 however the road has been paved making it much easier for people to enjoy the hot spiorngs.

There are in fact many hot springs in Betulang, but the largest one is located near Batu Panes Temple in the middle of some rice fields.

According to Sudana, the advantage of Belulang hot springs is that it can cure certain diseases.

“So, in addition to refreshing, many travelers also come to the hot spring for treatment,” he said. On that account, the Belulang hot springs are also closely related to a series of spiritual tourism. Sudana explained that if guests wishing to recover from illnesses, before taking a bath they usually say prayers at the Batu Panes Temple. Afterwards, they take a bath in the Belulang hot springs, just 50 meters away from the temple. “Many guests are cured like those having stroke coming here for treatment,” he said.

Sambirenteng customary village in Tejakula, Buleleng, organized mecakcakan tradition. This heritage tradition is better known as cockfighting in the shrine of Sambirenteng village. This unique ritual took place solemnly and festively attended by all local villagers.

Chief of Sambirenteng customary village, Jro Bendesa Nengah Mas, said that the mecakcakan is a tradition having been carried out from generation to generation.

Actually this ceremony is a series of pecaruan (animal sacrifice) at local village. The whole customary

villagers are required to submit a rooster to the committee. If villagers do not submit a fighting rooster, it can be replaced with money. After that, the roosters of customary villagers are then pitted in the area of the village shrine.

Uniqueness of this ritual lies in the cockfighting where watching people are not allowed to bet, so that this ritual is free from the impression of gambling. The losing rooster is slaughtered and cooked together to fill in the ritual oblations. The remaining will be enjoyed together through megi-

bung in the area of the Bale Agung temple. “This ritual is a heritage we’ve received and shall be held every year,” he said.

According to Mas, from his predecessors the Mecakcakan ritual is held every entering the new moon in the seventh month of Balinese calendar (January). This ritual signifies the devotion of people to God having bestowed prosperity to universe, especially to Sambirenteng village. Putin says trust erodes under Trump, Moscow icily receives Tillerson

MOSCOW - Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday trust had eroded between the United States and Russia under President Donald Trump, as Moscow delivered an unusually hostile reception to Secretary of State Rex Tillerson in a face-off over Syria.

Any hope in Russia that the Trump administration would herald less confrontational relations has been dashed in the past week after the new U.S. leader fired missiles at Syria to punish Moscow’s ally for its suspected use of poison gas.

Just as Tillerson sat down for talks, a senior Russian official assailed the “primitiveness and loutishness” of U.S. rhetoric, part of a volley of statements that appeared timed to maximise the awkwardness during the first visit by a member of Trump’s cabinet.

“One could say that the level of trust on a working level, especially on the military level, has not improved but has rather deteriorated,” Putin said in an interview broadcast on Russian television moments after Tillerson sat down with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in an ornate hall.

Putin doubled down on Russia’s support for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, repeating denials that Assad’s government was to blame for the gas attack last week and adding a new theory that the attack may have been faked

by Assad’s enemies.

After journalists were ushered out of the room, Lavrov’s spokeswoman, Maria Zakharova, wrote on her Facebook page that U.S. journalists travelling with Tillerson had behaved as if they were in a “bazaar” by shouting questions to Lavrov.

United Airlines faces mounting pressure over hospitalized passenger CHICAGO - United Airlines and its chief executive faced mounting pressure on Tuesday from a worldwide backlash over its treatment of a passenger who was dragged from his seat on a plane on Sunday to make room for four employees on the overbooked flight.

Lawyers for the passenger, Dr. David Dao, issued a statement late on Tuesday confirming his identity and saying that he and his family were “focused only on Dr. Dao’s medical care and treatment” in a Chicago hospital.

The U.S. Department of Transportation launched an inquiry into the incident, and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie called for new rules to curb the airline practice of overbooking flights.

United CEO Oscar Munoz issued a statement on Tuesday apologizing to Dao without naming him. “I’m sorry. We will fix this,” Munoz said. “I deeply apologize to the customer forcibly removed and to all the customers aboard.

No one should ever be mistreated this way.”

On Monday, Munoz issued a memo to employees defending the company but not apologizing to the passenger.

Munoz, a former railroad executive who took over the helm at United in 2015, had already been under pressure from activist investors to improve the airline’s performance, including its customer relations.

Video showing Dao being yanked from his seat by airport security Sunday evening and dragged from United Airlines Flight 3411 at Chicago O’Hare International Airport went viral and sparked global outrage.

An online petition calling for Munoz to step down had nearly 22,000 signatures by early Tuesday evening.

On Chinese social media, the incident attracted the attention

of more than 480 million users on Weibo, China’s Twitter-like platform.

United has about 20 percent of total U.S.-China airline traffic and has a partnership with Air China, the country’s third-largest airline, according to analysts. It flies to more Chinese cities than any other U.S. carrier. Last year, United added nonstop flights from San Francisco to Hangzhou, its fifth destination in mainland China.

Dao, before being dragged off the parked plane, said repeatedly that he was being discriminated against because he was Chinese, according to Tyler Bridges, a fellow passenger on the flight from Chicago to Louisville, Kentucky.

“He said, ‘I’m a doctor; I need to see patients,’” said Bridges, a civil engineer from Louisville who recorded much of the incident on his phone.

Shares of United Continental closed down 1.1 percent at $70.71, after falling as much as 4.4 percent earlier. The company shed as much as about $1 billion in market value before ending the day with a loss of about $250 million. More than 16 million United shares changed hands, the most for any session in a year.

The stock is down about 3 percent for the year.

United is also suffering from broader worries among investors about U.S. airline performance.

In the United States, social media outrage continued, with the incident trending on Twitter for the second consecutive day.

Many users promoted hashtags #NewUnitedAirlinesMotto and #BoycottUnitedAirlines.

This is the second time in less than a month that United has been caught in a social media storm. In late March, a United gate agent’s decision to refuse to board two teenage girls wearing leggings provoked a viral backlash. (rtr)

Jakarta’s Christian governor, Muslim rival in tight election race -poll

JAKARTA - The Christian governor of Jakarta, Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama, and his Muslim opponent are neck and neck in the race to lead Indonesia’s capital, an opinion poll showed on Wednesday, a week ahead of the hard fought vote.

The election campaign - which has been among the most divisive in the city’s history - has been marred by religious and ethnic tension over the blasphemy trial of the incumbent Purnama, who is

accused of insulting Islam.

Purnama was on 46.9 percent of the sample vote, trailing his rival Anies Baswedan by 1 percentage point in one of the first opinion polls published since the two candidates

made it through a first round election in mid-February. A candidate needs a simple majority to win.

Pollster Saiful Mujani Research Center (SMRC) said the survey of 800 respondents showed Baswedan enjoyed support primarily because of his Islamic faith, while Purnama was popular due to his record in office.

Nearly 90 percent of Indonesia’s 250 million population is Muslim, but the country recognizes six religions and is home to sizeable communities of Christians, Hindus

and those adhering to traditional beliefs. The state ideology, Pancasila, enshrines religious diversity in an officially secular system.

Purnama, who is Jakarta’s first ethnic Chinese and Christian governor, offended Muslim groups when he made comments last year about his opponents’ use of the Islamic holy book, the Koran, in political campaigning.

Since then, Muslims, led by hardline groups, have held mass rallies to call for Purnama to be

sacked, and to urge voters not to elect a non-Muslim. The rallies have raised concerns about growing religious intolerance in the world’s largest Muslim-majority nation.

Purnama has apologised for his comments and denied any wrongdoing. He faces up to four years in prison if found guilty.

Judges hearing the case decided this week to adjourn the trial until after voting day, after police and prosecutors asked for a delay because of security concerns. (rtr)

One third of Indonesian women suffer abuse prompting UN calls for action

JAKARTA - One third of Indonesian women have faced physical or sexual violence, according to new government data, prompting calls by a United Nations agency for urgent action to protect women. The government’s first national survey on violence against women showed 33 percent of women aged between 15 and 64 - around 26 million people - said they have faced abuse in their lives.

Cases of violence are most common among women who have received higher education and those who live in urban area, according to the survey released in late March. “The survey findings are sobering. It shows that violence against women occurs around us,” Annette Robertson, head of the U.N. Population Fund (UNFPA) in Indonesia told the Thomson Reuters Foundation.

The issue of violence against women hit the headlines in Indonesia last year after a schoolgirl was gang-raped and murdered, sparking public uproar and leading to the introduction of tougher punishments for sex offenders. “Violence against women is a human rights violation and rooted in gender inequality.

It deprives women and girls of the chance to enjoy a dignified life and present and future opportunities to live up to their full potential,” Robertson said.

The government’s survey has been welcomed by women’s rights campaigners as a way to tackle and address the root causes of violence against women in Indonesia, the world’s fourth-most populous na-

tion with 250 million people. Women’s groups in the country have long said a lack of comprehensive data hampered education and prevention of violence, making it harder to reflect the prevalence of the crime.

The government is due to release further findings and analysis of the survey in June. Indonesia was ranked 88th out of 144 countries in the World Economic Forum’s 2016 Gender Gap Index after scoring poorly on economic participation, education and political empowerment.

While Indonesia’s economy has raced ahead over the past decade, critics say old-fashioned social attitudes persist and women are often subject to scrutiny about their behaviour.

The UNFPA, which has helped the government carry out the survey, urged action from authorities and communities, saying failure to act could cost the country, including through productivity losses.

Robertson cited a previous study in Vietnam which showed women survivors of violence earned 35 percent less than women who are not abused. “Silence and non-action are not an option. The stakes are high,” she said. Globally, one in three women experience physical or sexual violence, according to the U.N. Women agency.

Women who have been physically or sexually abused are more likely to have an abortion, experience depression, or get HIV, the group said. (rtr)

Ukrainian Klitschko, who invited Joshua to a training camp in November 2014, was impressed by the London 2012 Olympics champion’s attitude and athleticism but insisted that both fighters had benefited from the sparring sessions.

“It’s an advantage on both sides. We have sparred and we have been in the ring together,” the 41-year-okd Klitschko told British media in the build up to his bid to hand defending IBF champion Joshua a first defeat as a professional.

“He got a chance to look and be in the background of my training team, my camp and got to know a lot,” he added.

“I was there in the arena in London when he won Olympic gold. Every medallist... at the Olympics has to be considered successful.”

Klitschko, who went unbeaten for 11 years before losing the belts to Tyson Fury in 2015, has 64 wins against four defeats and will be hoping to seize Joshua’s IBF crown as well as the vacant WBA and IBO titles that are also up for grabs.

The Ukrainian said he had learned from his mistakes during the Fury defeat but accepted he would never get revenge after their rematch was called off for the second time last September when the Briton was ruled medically unfit to fight.

“I lost, I didn’t do enough to win. I was thinking about it for a year, trying to get this rematch,” he added.

“And then when it all went downhill... I don’t care about it anymore.”

MANAMA - Lewis Hamilton is keeping his fingers crossed that he and Ferrari rival Sebastian Vettel can have a proper battle in Bahrain on Sunday after last year’s race did neither of them any favours.

Mercedes’s Hamilton after two races, was unable to start the 2016 grand prix at Sakhir due to an engine failure on the formation lap.

The German, who had qualified third behind the then-dominant Mercedes drivers, has been alongside Hamilton on the front row so

far this year.

“It (the title battle) is going to go right down to the end of the season, and I hope there’s nothing mechanical that will come in between our sheer battle through ability,” said Hamilton after winning in China last weekend.

“I really, really hope it’s just an out and out fight through stubbornness, through mental stability, through fitness, composure...,” he added.

Vettel, a four times world champion with Red Bull, and triple champion Hamilton have 43 points apiece after one victory and second place each.

Unless both draw a blank, the deadlock must be broken on Sunday at a desert circuit where both are two times winners and returning in rather better mood than they left last year.

There is a real sense of anticipation about the emerging scrap between two great rivals with a huge determination to win and no less mutual respect of each other’s talents and achievements.

“He is at his best and he is phenomenally quick,” Hamilton said of Australian Grand Prix winner Vettel. “Ferrari are at their best in years. We’re at our best as a team, and I feel like I’m at my best.

“The ultimate fighter always wants to go up against the best battle he can have because then when you come out on top, it’s so much more satisfying. I love this fight.”

UNHAPPY MEMORIES Last year’s race in Bahrain does not hold great memories for either of the current Mercedes drivers, either. Hamilton made a slow start from pole and collided on the first lap with the Williams of Valtteri Bottas, his new team mate this season, who was punished by stewards for his move.

Bottas, who has replaced last year’s winner and retired world champion Nico Rosberg, will not want reminding of that as he seeks to move on from a spin behind the safety car that cost him points in China.

Mercedes should be favourites, after winning the last three races at Sakhir, but Ferrari are sharp on strategy and have shown they flourish in hotter conditions.

“I think they will be very, very quick in the next race but there’s a lot of straights there as well and we’ve obviously got, I think, still the strongest power unit on the grid,” commented Hamilton.

“So I think that will come into play, for sure.”

The race will also see the return of Sauber’s Pascal Wehrlein, who has missed two races due to fitness issues, and of former commercial supremo Bernie Ecclestone, attending a race for the first time since his ouster by Liberty Media.

The 86-year-old Briton told Reuters that a Vettel v Hamilton battle was win-win for the sport.

“They are both good friends of mine so I don’t care who wins. It would be nice to see Ferrari win...

Sp rt Juventus give Italy a place at Europe’s top table

MILAN - After years of watching teams from other countries battle through the closing stages of the Champions League, Serie A can once again claim a place at Europe’s top table thanks to Juventus.

The Turin side’s 3-0 destruction of a waning Barcelona on Tuesday - where everyone shone, from 39-year-old goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon to precocious forward Paulo Dybala - showed they are as good as anything on offer in this season’s competition.

The victory left Juventus as firm favourites to advance to the semifinals, unless Barcelona can pull off a repeat of their previous round’s comeback against Paris St Germain when they lost the first leg 4-0 but won the second 6-1. After Inter Milan won the Champions League in 2010, Italy endured four successive seasons without managing to get a team beyond the quarter-finals - a far cry from the days when its clubs routinely dominated European competition.

With clubs unable to compete with the television revenue of their English

counterparts, stadiums falling into disrepair and attendances slumping, Serie A fell into a downward spiral.

Juventus, who themselves spent a season in Serie B after being relegated in the wake of a match-fixing scandal, were quickest to react. They demolished the over-sized, windswept Stadio Delle Alpi and replaced it with the compact, atmospheric Juventus stadium, becoming in the process the first Serie A club to own their own arena.

Its opening heralded a new era of domestic dominance with Juventus winning five successive Serie A titles from 2011/2012 onwards. Even so, they still seemed to be a long way from Europe’s elite. After being comprehensively outplayed by Bayern Munich in their 2012/13 quarter-final, then-coach Antonio Conte warned that it would be

a very long time before a Serie A club won the Champions League.

“Here in Italy, we have to work with what we have got and we need to have the humility to realise that things are not the same as they were in the past,” he said at the time. “But we are only interested in ... futile things, about gossip and creating controversies with referees.”

Conte left in 2014, having achieved domestic dominance, and was replaced

by Massimiliano Allegri, who saw Europe as the one area he could outdo his predecessor. Allegri replaced Conte’s hell-for-leather approach with a more controlled style that worked well in Europe, and in his first season led Juventus to the Champions League final, beating Real Madrid on the way.

Although they were ultimately outclassed by Barcelona 3-1 in Berlin, Juventus have continued building since.

They snapped up Gonzalo Higuain, Serie A’s most prolific marksman, when he fell out with Napoli at the end of last season, placing him alongside

Dybala, 23, the most exciting player to come out of Argentina since Lionel Messi.

Another key signing was Bosnian midfielder Miralem Pjanic, whose ability to play long passes over opposing defences has given Juventus a new dimension.

“We’re still in the process of growing,” Allegri said after Tuesday’s memorable

TURIN — Barcelona has to do it all over again. After a historic comeback in the last round, the Spanish club needs another match of epic proportions to reach the Champions League semifinals following Tuesday’s 3-0 loss at Juventus.

Juventus will, of course, be favored in the second leg on April 19, but still fresh in everyone’s mind is the 6-1 rout of Paris Saint-Germain which saw Barcelona become the first team in the history of the competition to overturn a 4-0 first-leg loss.

“We don’t feel as bad as we did in Paris, but we have another big mountain to climb,” said midfielder Andres Iniesta, one of the few Barcelona players to speak after the match. “If we do things as we need to, we’ll turn it around.

Otherwise, it’ll be impossible.

Bale ranks Tottenham’s Alli among the world’s greatest

LONDON - England international and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Dele Alli is good enough to play for any club in the world, according to Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale, himself a former Tottenham player.

Alli has emerged as a key part of the Tottenham team over the past two seasons and his 16 goals and five assists in the Premier League this season have helped propel Spurs to second in the table, seven points behind leaders CHELSEA. Alli celebrated his 21st birthday only this week and British media

are inevitably predicting Spurs will face a battle to hang on to such a talented young player this summer.

“In terms of his ability, he could play wherever he wants. He has achieved so much in a short time that he must have great confidence in his ability to affect games at a high level,” Bale told British media.

The Wales international broke the world transfer record when he left Tottenham for Real Madrid in 2013 and his success in Spain has convinced him that more British

players should make the move to continental Europe.

“I’ve loved being part of a different culture and learning new things,” Bale added. “You’ve just got to be open-minded and be prepared to learn a language and experience the unfamiliar.

Sp rt Juventus give Italy a place at Europe’s top table

MILAN - After years of watching teams from other countries battle through the closing stages of the Champions League, Serie A can once again claim a place at Europe’s top table thanks to Juventus.

The Turin side’s 3-0 destruction of a waning Barcelona on Tuesday - where everyone shone, from 39-year-old goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon to precocious forward Paulo Dybala - showed they are as good as anything on offer in this season’s competition.

The victory left Juventus as firm favourites to advance to the semifinals, unless Barcelona can pull off a repeat of their previous round’s comeback against Paris St Germain when they lost the first leg 4-0 but won the second 6-1. After Inter Milan won the Champions League in 2010, Italy endured four successive seasons without managing to get a team beyond the quarter-finals - a far cry from the days when its clubs routinely dominated European competition.

With clubs unable to compete with the television revenue of their English

counterparts, stadiums falling into disrepair and attendances slumping, Serie A fell into a downward spiral.

Juventus, who themselves spent a season in Serie B after being relegated in the wake of a match-fixing scandal, were quickest to react. They demolished the over-sized, windswept Stadio Delle Alpi and replaced it with the compact, atmospheric Juventus stadium, becoming in the process the first Serie A club to own their own arena.

Its opening heralded a new era of domestic dominance with Juventus winning five successive Serie A titles from 2011/2012 onwards. Even so, they still seemed to be a long way from Europe’s elite. After being comprehensively outplayed by Bayern Munich in their 2012/13 quarter-final, then-coach Antonio Conte warned that it would be

a very long time before a Serie A club won the Champions League.

“Here in Italy, we have to work with what we have got and we need to have the humility to realise that things are not the same as they were in the past,” he said at the time. “But we are only interested in ... futile things, about gossip and creating controversies with referees.”

Conte left in 2014, having achieved domestic dominance, and was replaced

by Massimiliano Allegri, who saw Europe as the one area he could outdo his predecessor. Allegri replaced Conte’s hell-for-leather approach with a more controlled style that worked well in Europe, and in his first season led Juventus to the Champions League final, beating Real Madrid on the way.

Although they were ultimately outclassed by Barcelona 3-1 in Berlin, Juventus have continued building since.

They snapped up Gonzalo Higuain, Serie A’s most prolific marksman, when he fell out with Napoli at the end of last season, placing him alongside

Dybala, 23, the most exciting player to come out of Argentina since Lionel Messi.

Another key signing was Bosnian midfielder Miralem Pjanic, whose ability to play long passes over opposing defences has given Juventus a new dimension.

TURIN — Barcelona has to do it all over again. After a historic comeback in the last round, the Spanish club needs another match of epic proportions to reach the Champions League semifinals following Tuesday’s 3-0 loss at Juventus.

Juventus will, of course, be favored in the second leg on April 19, but still fresh in everyone’s mind is the 6-1 rout of Paris Saint-Germain which saw Barcelona become the first team in the history of the competition to overturn a 4-0 first-leg loss.

“We don’t feel as bad as we did in Paris, but we have another big mountain to climb,” said midfielder Andres Iniesta, one of the few Barcelona players to speak after the match. “If we do things as we need to, we’ll turn it around.

MANAMA - Lewis Hamilton is keeping his fingers crossed that he and Ferrari rival Sebastian Vettel can have a proper battle in Bahrain on Sunday after last year’s race did neither of them any favours.

Mercedes’s Hamilton after two races, was unable to start the 2016 grand prix at Sakhir due to an engine failure on the formation lap.

The German, who had qualified third behind the then-dominant Mercedes drivers, has been alongside Hamilton on the front row so

far this year.

“It (the title battle) is going to go right down to the end of the season, and I hope there’s nothing mechanical that will come in between our sheer battle through ability,” said Hamilton after winning in China last weekend.

“I really, really hope it’s just an out and out fight through stubbornness, through mental stability, through fitness, composure...,” he added.

Vettel, a four times world champion with Red Bull, and triple champion Hamilton have 43 points apiece after one victory and second place each.

Unless both draw a blank, the deadlock must be broken on Sunday at a desert circuit where both are two times winners and returning in rather better mood than they left last year.

There is a real sense of anticipation about the emerging scrap between two great rivals with a huge determination to win and no less mutual respect of each other’s talents and achievements.

“He is at his best and he is phenomenally quick,” Hamilton said of Australian Grand Prix winner Vettel. “Ferrari are at their best in years. We’re at our best as a team, and I feel like I’m at my best.

“The ultimate fighter always wants to go up against the best battle he can have because then when you come out on top, it’s so much more satisfying. I love this fight.”

UNHAPPY MEMORIES Last year’s race in Bahrain does not hold great memories for either of the current Mercedes drivers, either. Hamilton made a slow start from pole and collided on the first lap with the Williams of Valtteri Bottas, his new team mate this season, who was punished by stewards for his move.

Bottas, who has replaced last year’s winner and retired world champion Nico Rosberg, will not want reminding of that as he seeks to move on from a spin behind the safety car that cost him points in China.

Mercedes should be favourites, after winning the last three races at Sakhir, but Ferrari are sharp on strategy and have shown they flourish in hotter conditions.

“I think they will be very, very quick in the next race but there’s a lot of straights there as well and we’ve obviously got, I think, still the strongest power unit on the grid,” commented Hamilton.

“So I think that will come into play, for sure.”

The race will also see the return of Sauber’s Pascal Wehrlein, who has missed two races due to fitness issues, and of former commercial supremo Bernie Ecclestone, attending a race for the first time since his ouster by Liberty Media.

The 86-year-old Briton told Reuters that a Vettel v Hamilton battle was win-win for the sport.

“They are both good friends of mine so I don’t care who wins. It would be nice to see Ferrari win...

MOSCOW - Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday trust had eroded between the United States and Russia under President Donald Trump, as Moscow delivered an unusually hostile reception to Secretary of State Rex Tillerson in a face-off over Syria.

Any hope in Russia that the Trump administration would herald less confrontational relations has been dashed in the past week after the new U.S. leader fired missiles at Syria to punish Moscow’s ally for its suspected use of poison gas.

Just as Tillerson sat down for talks, a senior Russian official assailed the “primitiveness and loutishness” of U.S. rhetoric, part of a volley of statements that appeared timed to maximise the awkwardness during the first visit by a member of Trump’s cabinet.

“One could say that the level of trust on a working level, especially on the military level, has not improved but has rather deteriorated,” Putin said in an interview broadcast on Russian television moments after Tillerson sat down with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in an ornate hall.

United Airlines faces mounting pressure over hospitalized passenger CHICAGO - United Airlines and its chief executive faced mounting pressure on Tuesday from a worldwide backlash over its treatment of a passenger who was dragged from his seat on a plane on Sunday to make room for four employees on the overbooked flight.

Lawyers for the passenger, Dr. David Dao, issued a statement late on Tuesday confirming his identity and saying that he and his family were “focused only on Dr. Dao’s medical care and treatment” in a Chicago hospital.

The U.S. Department of Transportation launched an inquiry into the incident, and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie called for new rules to curb the airline practice of overbooking flights.

United CEO Oscar Munoz issued a statement on Tuesday apologizing to Dao without naming him. “I’m sorry. We will fix this,” Munoz said. “I deeply apologize to the customer forcibly removed and to all the customers aboard.

No one should ever be mistreated this way.”

On Monday, Munoz issued a memo to employees defending the company but not apologizing to the passenger.

Munoz, a former railroad executive who took over the helm at United in 2015, had already been under pressure from activist investors to improve the airline’s performance, including its customer relations.

Video showing Dao being yanked from his seat by airport security Sunday evening and dragged from United Airlines Flight 3411 at Chicago O’Hare International Airport went viral and sparked global outrage.

An online petition calling for Munoz to step down had nearly 22,000 signatures by early Tuesday evening.

“He said, ‘I’m a doctor; I need to see patients,’” said Bridges, a civil engineer from Louisville who recorded much of the incident on his phone.

Shares of United Continental closed down 1.1 percent at $70.71, after falling as much as 4.4 percent earlier. The company shed as much as about $1 billion in market value before ending the day with a loss of about $250 million. More than 16 million United shares changed hands, the most for any session in a year.

The stock is down about 3 percent for the year.

United is also suffering from broader worries among investors about U.S. airline performance.

In the United States, social media outrage continued, with the incident trending on Twitter for the second consecutive day.

Many users promoted hashtags #NewUnitedAirlinesMotto and #BoycottUnitedAirlines.

Jakarta’s Christian governor, Muslim rival in tight election race -poll

JAKARTA - The Christian governor of Jakarta, Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama, and his Muslim opponent are neck and neck in the race to lead Indonesia’s capital, an opinion poll showed on Wednesday, a week ahead of the hard fought vote.

The election campaign - which has been among the most divisive in the city’s history - has been marred by religious and ethnic tension over the blasphemy trial of the incumbent Purnama, who is

accused of insulting Islam.

Purnama was on 46.9 percent of the sample vote, trailing his rival Anies Baswedan by 1 percentage point in one of the first opinion polls published since the two candidates

made it through a first round election in mid-February. A candidate needs a simple majority to win.

Pollster Saiful Mujani Research Center (SMRC) said the survey of 800 respondents showed Baswedan enjoyed support primarily because of his Islamic faith, while Purnama was popular due to his record in office.

Nearly 90 percent of Indonesia’s 250 million population is Muslim, but the country recognizes six religions and is home to sizeable communities of Christians, Hindus

and those adhering to traditional beliefs. The state ideology, Pancasila, enshrines religious diversity in an officially secular system.

Purnama, who is Jakarta’s first ethnic Chinese and Christian governor, offended Muslim groups when he made comments last year about his opponents’ use of the Islamic holy book, the Koran, in political campaigning.

Since then, Muslims, led by hardline groups, have held mass rallies to call for Purnama to be

sacked, and to urge voters not to elect a non-Muslim. The rallies have raised concerns about growing religious intolerance in the world’s largest Muslim-majority nation.

Purnama has apologised for his comments and denied any wrongdoing. He faces up to four years in prison if found guilty.

Judges hearing the case decided this week to adjourn the trial until after voting day, after police and prosecutors asked for a delay because of security concerns. (rtr)

One third of Indonesian women suffer abuse prompting UN calls for action

JAKARTA - One third of Indonesian women have faced physical or sexual violence, according to new government data, prompting calls by a United Nations agency for urgent action to protect women. The government’s first national survey on violence against women showed 33 percent of women aged between 15 and 64 - around 26 million people - said they have faced abuse in their lives.

Cases of violence are most common among women who have received higher education and those who live in urban area, according to the survey released in late March. “The survey findings are sobering. It shows that violence against women occurs around us,” Annette Robertson, head of the U.N. Population Fund (UNFPA) in Indonesia told the Thomson Reuters Foundation.

The issue of violence against women hit the headlines in Indonesia last year after a schoolgirl was gang-raped and murdered, sparking public uproar and leading to the introduction of tougher punishments for sex offenders. “Violence against women is a human rights violation and rooted in gender inequality.

It deprives women and girls of the chance to enjoy a dignified life and present and future opportunities to live up to their full potential,” Robertson said.

The government’s survey has been welcomed by women’s rights campaigners as a way to tackle and address the root causes of violence against women in Indonesia, the world’s fourth-most populous na-

tion with 250 million people. Women’s groups in the country have long said a lack of comprehensive data hampered education and prevention of violence, making it harder to reflect the prevalence of the crime.

The government is due to release further findings and analysis of the survey in June. Indonesia was ranked 88th out of 144 countries in the World Economic Forum’s 2016 Gender Gap Index after scoring poorly on economic participation, education and political empowerment.

While Indonesia’s economy has raced ahead over the past decade, critics say old-fashioned social attitudes persist and women are often subject to scrutiny about their behaviour.

The UNFPA, which has helped the government carry out the survey, urged action from authorities and communities, saying failure to act could cost the country, including through productivity losses.

Robertson cited a previous study in Vietnam which showed women survivors of violence earned 35 percent less than women who are not abused. “Silence and non-action are not an option. The stakes are high,” she said. Globally, one in three women experience physical or sexual violence, according to the U.N. Women agency.

Women who have been physically or sexually abused are more likely to have an abortion, experience depression, or get HIV, the group said. (rtr)

IMF leader Lagarde warns against trade protectionism

WASHINGTON — The head of the International Monetary Fund says that after six years of disappointing growth, the world economy is finally gaining momentum. But she warns of a number of potential threats, ranging from political uncertainty in Europe to protectionism that could hinder global trade.

IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde says that there is a critical need for more international cooperation, not less. Restricting trade flows would be a “self-inflicted wound” that would harm workers and consumers, she says. In the text of a speech to be delivered in Brussels on Wednesday, Lagarde did not single out any country for specific criticism on the issue of protectionism. But in his campaign, President Donald Trump vowed to impose punitive tariffs on goods from countries he believes harm American workers by flouting global trade rules.

Trump has threatened to impose tariffs as high as 45 percent on goods from China and Mexico unless those nations stop practices he says violate trade laws.

Resorting to protectionism would have a number of consequences, from disrupting supply chains for domestic companies to inflating prices that companies and consumer must pay, Lagarde said. A better approach would be for countries running large trade surpluses and those running deficits to cooperate in pursuing policies to deal with the imbalances, she said.

“Cooperation means working together to ensure that countries observe a level playing field,” Lagarde said.

In her prepared remarks, Lagarde

gave a preview of next week’s spring meetings in Washington of the 189nation IMF and its sister lending organization, the World Bank. The United States will be represented at the discussions by Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen.

Lagarde said that the discussions are taking place at a time when prospects for the global economy are improving after struggling for six years to emerge from the severe downturn triggered by the worst financial crisis since the 1930s.

“The good news is that after six years of disappointing growth, the world economy is gaining momentum as a cyclical recovery holds out the promise of more jobs, higher incomes and greater prosperity going forward,” Lagarde said the speech to be delivered at Bruegel, an economic research institute in Brussels.

Lagarde cited stronger manufacturing activity in advanced economies and continued robust gains in emerging economies, which she said will provide more than three-fourths of expected global growth in 2017.

One of the reasons for optimism is a rebound in the price of commodities which have brought relief to many low-income countries.

World trade seen growing 2.4 percent in 2017, uncertainty weighs - WTO

GENEVA - World trade is on track to expand by 2.4 percent this year, though there is “deep uncertainty” about economic and policy developments, particularly in the United States, the World Trade Organization (WTO) said on Wednesday. WTO director-general Roberto Azevedo said that clarity was still needed on U.S. President Donald Trump’s trade policies, while making a general appeal to resist protectionism.

The results of upcoming elections in major economies including France should provide more predictability for investors, he said.

The range for growth this year has been adjusted to between 1.8 and 3.6

percent, from 1.8 to 3.1 percent last September, the WTO said.

“We should see trade as part of the solution to economic difficulties, not part of the problem,” Azevedo said.

“Overall I think that while there are some reasons for cautious optimism, trade growth remains fragile and there are considerable risks on the downside. Much of the uncertainty around the outlook is political,” he told a news conference.

“We need to keep strengthening the system, delivering new reforms, and resisting the erection of new barriers to trade.” The WTO has repeatedly revised preliminary estimates over the past five years as predictions of economic recovery

prove overly optimistic. Global trade grew by “an usually low” 1.3 percent in 2016, the slowest pace since the financial crisis, failing to match even its revised forecast of 1.7 percent of last September.

“The poor performance over the year was largely due to a significant slowdown in emerging markets where imports basically stagnated last year, barely growing in volume terms,” Azevedo said. In 2018, global trade is forecast to grow by between 2.1 percent and 4 percent in WTO’s latest analysis.

“A spike in inflation leading to higher interest rates, tighter fiscal policies and the imposition of measures to curtail trade could all

undermine higher trade growth over the next two years,” it warned.

Trump has made reducing U.S. trade deficits a key focus of his economic agenda to try to grow American manufacturing jobs. He has taken particular aim at renegotiating trade relationships with China and Mexico.

He is considering an executive order to launch a trade investigation that could lead to supplemental duties in certain product categories, a Trump administration official told Reuters on Monday.

“If policymakers attempt to address job losses at home with severe restrictions on imports, trade cannot help boost growth and may even

constitute a drag on the recovery,” Azevedo said.

He awaited confirmation of the new U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) nominee Richard Lighthizer - who has pledged an “America First” strategy to aggressively enforce U.S. laws and trade deals to stop unfair imports and push China to scrap excess factory capacity.

“We are waiting to see the new trade team really in place, waiting for the new USTR to be confirmed so that we can have a more meaningful dialogue at this point in time we don’t have that. We are still waiting to see how the trade policy itself is going to shape up in the United States.”(rtr)

Local community leader, Nengah Sudana, explained that although the hot springs have been there for a long time, it used ot be very hard to get there due to the severly damaged road that led to them. Since 2014 however the road has been paved making it much easier for people to enjoy the hot spiorngs.

Actually this ceremony is a series of pecaruan (animal sacrifice) at local village. The whole customary

villagers are required to submit a rooster to the committee. If villagers do not submit a fighting rooster, it can be replaced with money. After that, the roosters of customary villagers are then pitted in the area of the village shrine.

Uniqueness of this ritual lies in the cockfighting where watching people are not allowed to bet, so that this ritual is free from the impression of gambling. The losing rooster is slaughtered and cooked together to fill in the ritual oblations. The remaining will be enjoyed together through megi-

bung in the area of the Bale Agung temple. “This ritual is a heritage we’ve received and shall be held every year,” he said.

According to Mas, from his predecessors the Mecakcakan ritual is held every entering the new moon in the seventh month of Balinese calendar (January). This ritual signifies the devotion of people to God having bestowed prosperity to universe, especially to Sambirenteng village. The lands, he said, are planted with strawberries and some vegetables like tomato. Due to being submerged and leading to crop failure, the losses are not avoidable.

Based on the data collection, it reached approximately IDR 1.5 billion. “For one hectare of strawberries, the losses can reach IDR 200 million, while the losses of vegetables can be less. Total losses can reach billions,” he said.

Faced with such conditions, farmers are ascertained not to cultivate their land in the near future. To keep earning, some farmers are choosing to farm at another location near the hills. “For the land cultivation, it is still difficult to predict. It still rains frequently,” said Suja.

Baby kidnapper arrested in South Sulawesi

DENPASAR - A team of Directorate of General Criminal Investigation Unit of Bali Police arrested the kidnapper of baby with the initials CEP (8 months) at Wadula village, Tuwoti, East Luwu, South Sulawesi, on Tuesday (Apr. 11).

The culprit is Ni Ketut Na and she was arrested at her cousin’s house.

Director of General Criminal Investigation Unit, Sang Made Mahendra, said that the disclosure of the case started from the report of victim’s mother to the integrated police services (SPKT) of Bali police on January 26.

“The reported is Ni Ketut Nariani,” he said last Tuesday.

It was then followed up by investigation, examination of witnesses and crime scene investigation. After three months of hunting down the culprit, police finally managed to track down the culprit, namely in South Sulawesi. “We immediately order our personnel to pursue to the location,” said this former chief of criminal investigation unit of Makassar police.

The team led by Trijoko Widianto immediately left for South Sulawesi, and on Tuesday at 15:30 the culprit could be arrested. Meanwhile, the victim was found in the house in a healthy

condition. According to Mahendra, the officers were on the journey to Bali.

Since she had not got the money, the victim’s mother was advised to move by the boarding house owner to avoid commotion, while the baby was taken by the culprit. “A few days later, the victim’s mother came to the boarding house. In fact, the culprit and the baby were not found at the boarding house. So, she immediately reported the case to police station,” said Mahendra. (kmb36)

SCARBOROUGH SHOAL - For Filipino fishermen, a trip to the Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea is an uncomfortable one at the best of times.

Hours working in the scorching sun, a monotonous diet of rice, spam and fish, sometimes for weeks, all the while watching for tropical storms that could wreck their modest wooden boats.

For a team of Reuters landlubbers making a reporting trip to the disputed shoal, there were other challenges - the lack of any toilets apart from the sea, sleeping wedged on the open deck, and most of all, the constant worry that the Chinese coastguard would try to drive us away.

Five years after China forcibly blockaded the rich waters from all but its own fishermen, the visit last week confirmed that Beijing had made concessions. Philippine vessels were allowed to fish again, and small boats could enter the lagoon.

But while an international panel last year ruled the shoal should be freely fished by all, China’s coastguard was still clearly calling the shots.

Alerted to our presence by Chinese fishermen holding cameras and two-way radios, a coastguard vessel sped towards us before losing track of our boat in the mass of similar looking craft surrounding

the prized fishing grounds.

Months in planning, the 200km (124-mile) journey from the Philippine coast to the shoal took 18 hours in a narrow, 12m (40ft) fishing boat.

Earlier trips had to be cancelled when storms made the crossing too dangerous. On this journey a second vessel was hired to accompany us as a precaution against bad weather or breakdowns.

Space was limited on rudimentary wooden boats that are steadied by bamboo cane outriggers held together by reams of fishing line.

There’s no power, and no roof, just a tarpaulin sheet to shelter from the rain and sun.

Enough water, canned meat, rice and fuel were brought to last a week in case bad weather stranded us at the shoal. For journalists, there’s also cameras, tripods, life jackets, as well as a satellite phone and small generator to charge batteries.

LIFE IN WATERWORLD Our boats approached the area at daybreak. It is an oasis in a desert of water, a huge flotilla of fishing vessels far away from home, lined up with bows pointing towards the

bright green shoal.

In the distance, a Chinese coastguard ship guarded the mouth of the reef, preventing the larger boats from entering.

China and the Philippines have sparred for decades over ownership of this prized lagoon, but with relations improved, Filipino boats now anchor alongside Chinese vessels.

We watched as barefooted men in leggings, long-sleeves, caps and gloves trade freely with each other.

Using hand signals, they swap cigarettes or fish, in scenes reminiscent of “Waterworld”, the 1995 Kevin Costner film, where polar ice caps have melted and post-apocalyptic tribes live on boats.

We joined fishermen riding small boats over the damaged coral wall of the lagoon, careful to avoid disrupting men inside who cast nets or spear for fish. Interviews were conducted with masked divers treading water, and we snorkel over the reef with a waterproof camera, checking out the coral and sealife.

The Chinese boats are robust, and luxurious compared with those of the Filipinos, some of which are barely more than rafts.

Clothes and drying fish were hung from the ropes that hold these craft together, the smell overpowered by diesel fumes. Makeshift wire cages of live lobsters trailed behind.(rtr)

SEOUL - South Korea’s frontrunner for the country’s upcoming May 9 presidential election Moon Jae-in said on Wednesday he will immediately push to have a supplementary budget drafted if he is elected.

In a speech on his economic pledges, Moon said he will aim for investment in 10 key sectors and expects to create over 500,000 new jobs per year on average.

Moon did not specify an amount for the pledged supplementary budget.

NUCLEAR POWER No matter who is elected as South Korea’s new leader next month it is clear that coal and nuclear power generation will likely be scaled back, with most of the candidates laying out plans on Wednesday to address public concerns over pollution and safety.

Less than a month from a May 9 election to replace impeached president Park Geun-hye, policy experts outlined in a forum the energy proposals of four of the five contenders.

The two leading candidates, liberal front-runner Moon Jae-In and centrist Ahn Cheol-soo, both plan to lower South Korea’s reliance on coal and nuclear power, pointing to a need to shift to renewable energy, according to their policy advisors.

In the latest poll by Gallup Korea, Moon got the support of 38 percent of respondents, and Ahn got 35 percent.

South Korea, Asia’s fourthlargest economy, gets 40 percent of its electricity from coal, 30 percent from nuclear, 20 percent from natural gas, and the rest from

oil and renewables.

But policy changes are expected amid growing concerns over pollution and the safety of nuclear energy, and Moon and Ahn appear determined to help drive them.

“We should move away from coal and nuclear power, and shift to clean or renewable energy-based platforms,” said Kim Jwa-kwan, head of Moon’s energy policy team.

Kim said his team planned for nuclear and coal power to account for 18 percent and 15 percent respectively of power supply by 2030, while the contribution of liquefied natural gas (LNG) would increase to 37 percent to support the rise of renewables.

If elected, Moon also “would scrap a plan to build Shin Kori No.5 and Shin Kori No.6 nuclear reactors on which construction began last year and revamp the country’s nuclear power expansion scheme,” Kim said.

That means South Korea’s plan to build 11 nuclear reactors by 2029 could be under threat.

Ahn would similarly shelve a plan to construct four coal-fired power plants and not extend the lifespan of ageing coal and nuclear power stations, said Oh Jeong-Rye, deputy director of Ahn’s People Party. Both candidates target a 20 percent renewable energy share by 2030 as part of efforts to cut carbon emissions.

Under the current power supply plan, in addition to building 11 nuclear reactors by 2029 - three of which are already under construction - South Korea plans to add 20 more coal-fired power plants by 2022. (rtr)

Spine manipulation might help with low back pain

PORTLAND - Spinal manipulation therapy may work as well for easing lower back pain as anti-inflammatory medications, a research review concludes.

Based on data from 15 previously conducted trials involving a total of 1,711 adults, the study team found that spinal manipulation achieved meaningful reductions in pain and improvements in function after six weeks of treatment.

The effect on pain was modest, and similar to what other studies have found with non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDS).

“Most doctors and patients have a good sense of what NSAIDs do work great in some patients, don’t seem to work much at all in others, work somewhat in many more,” said senior study author Dr. Paul Shekelle of the West Los Angeles Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

“I think spinal manipulation therapy is much the same,” Shekelle said by email.

Lower back pain is one of the leading causes of disability and doctor visits for adults worldwide.

It often goes away within a few weeks. But when it persists, lower back pain might be treated with spinal manipulation, medications like painkillers or muscle relaxers, heat, exercise or physical therapy.

Spinal manipulation is often done by chiropractors but may also be offered by physical therapists or physicians. It can include manually moving joints, massage and exercise. This type of treatment is designed to relieve pressure on joints and curb inflammation and it’s often used for back, neck or shoulder pain as well as for headaches.

For the current study, Shekelle and colleagues focused on the gold standard for determining the effectiveness and safety of medical treat-

ments: randomized controlled trials that compare outcomes for patients who are randomly assigned to a specific treatment or to a dummy treatment or none at all.

In an analysis of data from 15 trials, they found spinal manipulation offered a meaningful reduction

of pain within six weeks. Based on a review of 12 trials, the researchers also found spinal manipulation associated with statistically meaningful improvements in functional abilities.

None of the trials uncovered serious side effects of spinal manipulation. However, minor side effects like pain, muscle stiffness and headache were common.

One limitation of the analysis

is that the original studies included in the review had a wide variety of designs, involved various kinds of providers with different training and compared spinal manipulation to assorted other types of treatment, the authors note.

Dolphins considered as ‘pest’

AMLAPURA — In the past two weeks, fishermen at Bugbug village, Karangasem subdistrict, are made dizzy. It happened because the dolphin usually befriending with human chiefly fishermen is now even harms many fishermen along the coastline of Bugbug village. Lately, the dolphins often appearing in local waters savor the fish commonly caught by fishermen.

A local fisherman, Ketut Wiryawan, said on Tuesday (Apr. 11) that this April is supposed to be a ‘harvest season’ for local fishermen. In a normal situation, fishermen can catch 50-100 fish a day during peak season. However, with the emergence of increasingly many dolphins, the catch of fishermen drastically drops. Moreover, they can go home in empty hands.

“More seriously, the dolphins also damage our nets and fishing rods. Right now, the dolphins even become a pest to us,” said the fisherman of Sari Wahyu Samudera Bali fishermen group of Bugbug customary village.

In this kind of situation, local fisherman is made frustrated in the past two days. Their boats are forced to be parked on the beach, and then shifted profession into market laborer and unskilled laborer. They do it in order to still support their family.

Another fisherman, Nengah Supatra, also complained about the same condition. He admitted to have not gone to sea in the past week amid the harvest season of swordfish as it happens today. Many other fishermen also choose not to go to sea because their operating cost to go to sea is quite high. “We do not know how long this dolphin will disturb us. Moreover, their number increases in the waters around our catching area,” he said.

Both fishermen said if the situation is possibly caused by excessive population of dolphins. Thus, they are now having trouble in finding food and then savor the fish commonly caught by fishermen in the waters around the Bugbug village. In the past, there was also similar condition caused by dolphins, but not as severe as today, making harvest season into bad season. These fishermen do not know whether the emergence of many dolphins have something to do with psychical issues. Bugbug customary village has not addressed

to this issue physically and psychically.

Chief of Bugbug customary village, Jro Wayan Mas Suyasa, said on Tuesday (Apr. 11) that what happens in the middle of the sea has been set by the Almighty. So, with this situation, he asked fisherman to remain grateful. When getting little catches, they should remain grateful.

“We cannot blame on nature. We cannot call the dolphins as a pest. God has arranged the universe. Now, fishermen should pray diligently and plead to him in order to get out of this problem,” he said while insisting that his authority

has not thought about any special rituals to deal with the difficulties faced by local fishermen.

This issue also affects the availability of fish in the local market. Fish stock becomes rare in the market because the catch of fishermen is now very minimal. A local fishmonger at Bugbug Market, Ni Made P. Mekar Sari, said that fish has almost not been available since last week. DENPASAR - The relaxation deadline to submit the permit for illegal non-bank foreign exchange business activities (KUPVA BB) to Bank Indonesia (BI) ended on April 7. On Monday (Apr. 10), central office of Bank Indonesia together with the criminal investigation unit came down to curb illegal nonbank foreign exchange businesses.

“Until the specified time limit, starting today we curb against the KUPVA,” said Team Leader of the Economic and Finance Advisory of the BI for Bali Representatives Office, Teguh Setiadi.

Based on data of Bank Indonesia for Bali Representative Office, there are 70 illegal non-bank foreign exchange businesses. Unfortunately, the enforcement activities

were not allowed to be covered by media. It happens because his agency is still searching for an effective pattern to curb the non-bank foreign exchange businesses.

He said that the illegal non-bank foreign exchange business will be affixed with sticker to indicate if they are illegal. If the sticker is opened, then the business owner will be charged with criminal suit.

Although in Bali there are 70 illegal non-bank foreign exchange businesses, it is predicted many more such illegal businesses remain to operate primarily in the area of Kuta, Seminyak and Sanur. In Indonesia, the largest illegal nonbank foreign exchange business is found in Lhokseumawe amounting to 127 units.

All this time, those illegal nonbank foreign exchange businesses operating for years have committed frauds that harm foreign travelers.

“It is our concerns. If licensed, they will surely not dare to commit frauds. So, at the time of the transaction, the exchange rates displayed on the board is accordance with the transactions. Thus, we lead to consumer protection. Moreover, if the consumers are foreign travelers, it can tarnish the image of tourism,” he explained.

Although the permit has no validity period, it can be revoked if the owners do not fulfill the obligations of the non-bank foreign exchange businesses and they are inactive.

“This morning (Monday—Ed) I revoke a permit due to inactivity,”

he said.

Based on the data as of January 31, there are 142 head offices and 545 branch offices of licensed nonbank foreign exchange businesses in Bali. Admittedly, there are some non-bank foreign exchange businesses that applied for a permit to BI lately and are still being processed. However, four applications of such business are rejected.

“Since we see that some nonbank foreign exchange businesses have been given permission, so in accordance with the provisions they have obligations to submit a report to BI and deliver transactions to the Indonesian Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK). If they do not comply with the rules, we summon

and provided them with coaching first,” he explained. The obligation of reporting is meant to view suspicious transactions related to terrorism or drug trafficking.

SEMARAPURA - Coinciding with full moon of Balinese tenth month, Tuesday (Apr. 11), residents of Sema Agung customary village, Tusan, Banjarangkan, undertook melasti procession to Tegal Besar Beach, Negari. The ritual was held in the series of Ngusaba Desa at local village. However, the melasti ritual held is different. The residents participating in the melasti procession brought tektekan (bamboo split drum) and put on a hat of green coconut leaf.

While cheering, residents hit the bamboo split drum along the coastal road of Tegal Besar to generate tektekan sound.

Tektekan is believed by citizens as the gong of god. Residents also believe that tektekan is used to dismiss miseries or a kind of ritual to dismiss pest and diseases. But over the time, the use of tektekan is equipped with bamboo fire blower and gamelan.

“Historically, this tradition has been indeed inherited from our ancestors. According to them, in the past the tektekan was trusted to dismiss calamities like in the nangluk merana ritual,” said the priest of Dalem Penyarikan Puseh Bale Agung Temple of Sema Agung, Ketut Purna, last Tuesday.

He told there are 75 pieces of tektekan brought by residents. They are created at people’s home. Once completed, they are collected at Dalem Penyarikan Temple to be ritually activated (pasupati). The making of such bamboo split drum or tektekan is done in turn by customary villagers. Currently, the tektekan is made by residents of Kawan hamlet, while the ritual is organized by Kanginan hamlet.

No charges expected for One Direction star in LA airport scuffle LOS ANGELES - One Direction singer Louis Tomlinson is not expected to be criminally charged over a tussle with a photographer at Los Angeles airport last month, judicial officials said on Tuesday.

The British singer and the photographer, who was not named, will instead be summoned to the Los Angeles City Attorney’s office to be interviewed and “advised of the law and ways to avoid similar incidences in the future,” the City Attorney’s office said in a statement.

“Typically there is no further action taken by our office after the hearing,” the statement said.

The City Attorney’s office said both parties would be asked attend the meeting toward the end of this month. It said it reserved the right to file charges for up to one year.

Tomlinson, 25, one of the members of the chart-topping boy band, was arrested at the airport on March 3 after a scuffle with a paparazzi photographer who was trying to take photos of the singer and his girlfriend.

Social media video showed the photographer on the ground and Tomlinson was booked for misdemeanor battery.

Tomlinson’s lawyer, Martin Singer, said at the time that the singer was not at fault and that the paparazzi caused the altercation.

Tomlinson’s representatives could not immediately be reached for comment on Tuesday. (rtr)

Jenner, 67, one of the most-high profile American transgender woman, says in an upcoming memoir that she had the surgery in January, and that she decided to go public “so all of you can stop staring.”

“You want to know, so now you know. Which is why this is the first time, and the last time, I will ever speak of it,” Jenner wrote in leaked excerpts of her memoir “The Secrets of My Life.”

Jenner announced her new identity in an April 2015 TV interview and announced her change of name from Bruce to Caitlyn in a July 2015 Vanity Fair cover shoot.

Jenner, the step-father of reality stars Kim, Kourtney and Khloe Kardashian, later had her own TV reality show which documented her transition.

Three explosions went off as team bus left hotel on way to stadium

KARLSRUHE/DUESSELDORF - German authorities arrested a suspected Islamist on Wednesday in connection with an attack on a bus carrying players of one of the country’s top soccer teams, a spokeswoman for the Federal Prosecutor’s Office said. German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s spokesman said she was “appalled” by Tuesday evening’s attack on the Borussia Dortmund bus, in which Spanish defender Marc Bartra was injured.

The incident forced a 24-hour postponement of the team’s highprofile clash with AS Monaco, and officials said security had been stepped up for that game and a second Champions League quarter-final in Germany on Wednesday, between Bayern Munich and Real Madrid.

Ralf Jaeger, interior minister in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia which includes Dortmund, said the investigation was looking “in all directions”, and it was unclear if one or several attackers were involved. The spokeswoman for the Federal Prosecutors, who handle probes into suspected terrorism, said investigators had found three letters near the scene of the attack, all with the same content suggesting a possible Islamist motive.
