Justin Timberlake, wife Biel welcome baby boy

LOS ANGELES - Singer Justin Timberlake and his actress wife Jessica Biel welcomed their first child into the world on Saturday, a boy named Silas Randall.

Timberlake, 34, was “ecstatic,” People magazine said, adding that mother and baby were doing well.

“My amazing son and his beautiful wife have given us the most precious gift in the world!” Timberlake’s mother, Lynn Harless, wrote on Facebook.

“Silas Randall Timberlake! Named after my father and my son! Life is beautiful and we couldn’t be happier!

God bless you all and thanks for all the congrats!”

Actress Biel, who found fame with US television series 7th Heaven, began dating former boy band N’Sync frontman Timberlake in 2007, after he launched a successful solo career.

Argentina requests Interpol notice for Bieber’s arrest

BUENOS AIRES - An Argentine judge has asked Interpol to issue a Red Notice for the arrest of pop star Justin Bieber over the alleged assault of a photographer outside a nightclub in 2013, his staff said Friday.

Bieber ignored a November court order to appear before the judge in the case, which dates to a stop in Buenos Aires on the Canadian heartthrob’s Believe tour.

“We are asking Interpol for Justin Bieber’s detention, anywhere in the world.

Since he could not be found for his appearance to testify, we request that he be detained,” Judge Alberto Banos’s secretary told AFP. She said the request had been made on April 8, after Bieber failed to turn up in court within 60 days of his summons.

Interpol, the international police body, does not issue arrest warrants itself, but can send out a Red Notice informing its 190 member states that a suspect is wanted in a particular country.

According to the complaint, a bodyguard, following Bieber’s orders, forcefully seized photographer Diego Pesoa’s camera and cellphone outside a nightclub in the upscale Palermo neighborhood in November 2013.

The 21-year-old megastar, who once enjoyed a squeaky clean image, has more recently had frequent run-ins with the law, including one in Canada in which he allegedly assaulted a limousine driver.

Last year, he pleaded guilty to lesser charges after taking part in an illegal drag race on a Miami street.

He was also sentenced to two years’ probation last year for throwing eggs at the home of a neighbor in California.

The 2013 tour stop, Bieber’s only visit to Argentina, was peppered with scandals.

He was also thrown out of a hotel, and cut one show short after 45 minutes because of a stomach ache, angering some fans. (afp)

NEW YORK — Taylor Swift revealed to her fans that her mother has cancer. Swift wrote about the news in a post on her Tumblr on Thursday, which her representative confirmed. Swift said she wants to keep the details private, but said her mother wanted her fans to know what was going on.

The 25-year-old singer said she asked her mother to see her doctors as a Christmas gift.

She said “there were no red flags,” but they later learned Andrea Swift had cancer.

Thought Swift is the superstar, Andrea has become a favorite among Swift’s fans, often earning cheers from audiences at live shows and taking photos with fans.

Swift also encouraged her young fans to remind their parents to go to the doctor and get check-ups. (ap)

Guest visit declines after rate increase of dolphin tour

SINGARAJA - Lately, the fuel price hike is suspected to have a significant impact on the increase in the dolphin guiding rates and so is the lack of tourists coming to watch dolphin attraction. Lovina Beach area is famous for its dolphin icon as a tourist attraction in Buleleng. The increase in visitor becomes the hope of fishermen working as a tour guide in order to increase their daily income.

Reducing tourist visit in the middle of the year is inversely proportional to entering high season. The activity of fishermen to escort guest decreases from typically three times a day to only once a day. Unpredictable condition often makes fishermen idle and tends to repair their equipment to catch fish. “Our guiding activities this year begin to decline as entering mid-year like in April every year is always deserted. The increase will begin to be visible from June to August.

Now, I am able to escort guests once a day,” said a fisherman doubling as tour guide of dolphin tour, Made Bagi, 40, from Kalibukbuk village, Lovina, Singaraja.

Adverse weather condition often makes fishermen scream. They tend to reduce their fishing activities and escorting guests. Occasionally when guests would like to watch dolphins, the cost per person is forced to be

raised in order to cover the operating cost due to fuel price hike several weeks ago.

“The current rate is IDR 100,000 per person from IDR 60,000 per person. We just object when the fuel price goes up. Although we can escort guests, we have trouble in the cost of purchasing gasoline at high enough price,” he added.

Made Bagi does not want to

make his guests disappointed and he has a special trick to get around the fuel price hike. Although the rate increases, the tradition of bargaining price in the field cannot be denied. So, he begins to set the mileage in order to be able to enjoy the dolphin attraction at sea. “We get around the mileage of dolphin tour from typically 50 kilometers to about 20 kilometer. Obviously it affects the catch and reduction of income,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Group Head of Cipta Karya Bakti Samudra at Kalibukbuk, Singaraja, Kadek Budiasa, explained that the group has 25 members. The decline in tourist visit is alleged to happen because

it has not entered holiday season.

His party only objects to the policy when the fuel price goes up and he is forced to reduce the mileage at sea. “Now, I often go to sea at night, and only using light and generator set. Jokowi greeted by rejection of reclamation in Bali

DENPASAR - President Joko Widodo while attending the Fourth PDI-P Congress got ‘a surprise’ from the residents of Sanur on Thursday (Apr. 9). As president Jokowi made his way to the congress, he drove passed local youths who lined Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai holding banners that read: “Cancel Presidential Regulation No.51/2014.”

These youth were not alone in conducting such actions. Members of the Sanur Fishermen Group also took action at sea. At least 30 people set sail on 15 boats and sailed around the Grand Bali Beach Hotel. However, only a few boats managed to pass in front of the hotel because police prevented them from doing so. Gusde, Coordinator of the boat action, was even detained on the beach for interrogation, although he was eventually released.

“Let Jokowi know that we want to remind him that the PDI-P said that they would reject the regulation for the seek of the people, so why should we be stopped from demonstrating in our boats?” said Gusde regarding the demonstration of the rejection of the reclamation plan. The protesters also expressed their disagreement with the Chairman of the PDI-P Bali, I Wayan Koster, who said that he would not discuss the matter of the Benoa Bay reclamation project in the congress.

“He was elected by the people, so he should be pro-people and do what people demand. If he does neglects to do so, it is just like a peanut forgetting its skin. If he forgets his promises once he has the position, something bad

could be triggered. Actually we do not want to mention anyone, whether Koster or others,” he said.

Gusde added that he does not agree with the reclamation plan because it is filled with personal interests and does not favor the interests of the wider community.

Aside from protests around the congress itself, the rejection of the Benoa Bay reclamation plan was also expressed by the people of Indonesia in Washington DC who also urge President Joko Widodo to revoke Presidential Regulation No.51/2014 that would allow for such a project.

“From our perspective, this reclamation plan is just a gimmick used to control the land which has a very high economic value,” said the representative of the Indonesian community in Washington DC, Made Supriatma.

The Indonesians in Washington held a peaceful demonstration outside the United States Congress, Capitol Hill, on April 11.

Residents join “sapuh leger” ritual en masse

BANGLI - The high costs incurred

by Hindu’s who perform pabayuhan (exorcism rituals) especially the sapuh leger ritual has given rise to exorcism rituals done en-masse. On Tuesday April 11, dozens of residents at Kayubihi Bangli, ranging from young children to the elderly, participated in such a ritual.

Chief of Kayubihi customary village, I Wayan Sadia, explained that the sapuh leger exorcism ritual was attended by 27 people who were born on wuku (one of the Balinese seven-day weeks) Wayang. The ritual

is down so as to avoid negative influences although the exorcism ritual is only done once in a lifetime. Without performing such a ritual, it is believed that children born on wuku Wayang will be subject to disaster.

Sadia went on to say that the sapuh leger ritual done en-masse is one way of alleviating the burden of the expensive ritual for local people, especially for those in the middle and lower economic classes that cannot necessarily afford the manusa yajña ceremony.

He also explained that the ritual

must be held, so members of the Hindu community have found a solution by performing the ritual together as a village. “Mass rituals are cheaper so each person can spend less,” he explained.

Sadia disclosed that such group rituals also aim to improve the kinship between residents and foster the tradition of mutual assistance, because everyone is involved in the preparation of the ceremony. “Other than for purpose of the ritual itself, it can also increase the sense of brotherhood,” he said.

One of the residents participating in the ritual, I Nengah Santika, said that he was greatly assisted by the mass ritual. Over the years he has not been able to perform it independently due to financial problems. According to him, it can cost up to IDR 30 million.

The mass ritual only costs IDR 1 million per person. “If we organize a sapuh leger independently, it can cost tens of millions, while en masse the cost is more affordable,” he said.

He also added that if the ritual is carried out independently, apart from the oblations, one also has to pay for

other expenses such as food, beverages and renting tents.

The one-day event began with the performance of a shadow puppet play performed by puppeteer Jro Dalang Sudirma which was followed by the sprinkling of holy water at the family shrines of participants. Then the exorcism rite is conducted using holy water and the puppets are carried out in front of the puppet performance. Participants also step on a bundle of Balinese rice. The procession is continued with pabayuh oton, majaya-jaya and ends with the saying of prayers. (kmb45)

Geria Telabah Denpasar is grieving. Ida Ayu Alit Kerti is the mother of the Bali tourism figure, Ida Bagus Surakusuma, has passed away. This patient woman died of illness at the age of 93 years old. She was treated at the pavilion of Wangaya Hospital Denpasar and passed away on Sunday (Apr. 5) at four o’clock in the afternoon.

The late Ida Ayu Alit Kerti is known as the mother becoming a role model. She completed her education at the Hollandsch-Inlandsche School (HIS) and during her lifetime she very faithfully followed her late husband. Ida Bagus Jaya Kusuma once served as the Head of Public Works Agency in Jakarta, Tangerang and Irian Jaya.

He then returned home to Bali with her husband after retirement.

Ida Bagus Surakusuma is familiarly called I.B. Lolec as coordinator of the ceremony expressed the cremation activity will be held at Griya Telabah, precisely at Jalan Thamrin I / 10 Denpasar. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Airbnb offers Cuba lodgings in major US business expansion

HAVANA — The popular online home-rental service Airbnb is allowing American travelers to book lodging in Cuba in the most significant U.S. business expansion on the island since the declaration of detente between the two countries late last year.

For a half-century, the U.S. trade embargo had blocked such businesses from entering the Cuban market. In January, however, the Obama administration loosened a series of restrictions on U.S. business in an attempt to encourage the growth of the island’s small private sector.

Airbnb searches for “Cuba” now turn up more than 1,000 properties across the island, with 40 percent in Havana and the rest in tourist destinations such as Cienfuegos a few hours away on the southern coast. The company has been sending teams of representatives to Cuba for three months to sign up home owners, and plans to expand steadily in coming months.

“We believe that Cuba could become one of Airbnb’s biggest markets in Latin America,” said Kay Kuehne, regional director for Airbnb, the website and mobile app that allows users to book rooms in more than 1 million private homes around the world.

One of the most developed and important elements of Cuba’s entrepreneurial sector is a network of thousands of privately owned rooms and houses for tourists.

Starting in the post-Soviet economic crisis of the 1990s as homey, bed and breakfast-style alternatives to Cuba’s generally grim state-run hotels, “casas particulares,” or private homes, have expanded into an industry with options ranging from small apartments in central Havana to multi-room beach houses with top-notch food and maid service.

The Airbnb move could be the most significant development in terms of putting money in the pockets of entrepreneurs across the island and bolstering them in a stagnant state-run economy — leading goals for the Obama administration in warming relations with Cuba.

“I think this is going to help our business prosper, to definitely improve, not just private business, but everything here,” said Israel Rivero, who owns an immaculately renovated, pre-war apartment in central Havana. He charges $25 a night per room, but the price will go to $30 on Airbnb to cover fees and currency exchange costs.

Asked about the expansion, the U.S. State Department said Thursday that “we applaud efforts to help the Cuban people, including the nascent private sector, take advantage of new opportunities to move Cuba towards greater openness and prosperity.”

Cuba has been wrestling with how to accommodate a surge of travelers since the announcement of detente. Trips to the island have been up nearly 20 percent in recent months, mostly by non-

U.S. travelers, and many hotels are fully booked, particularly the few able to offer service close to international standards.

“Airbnb’s momentous expansion into Cuba represents the first move by a major American company to fully seize the opportunities presented by both our new Cuba policy and the island’s burgeoning entrepreneurial sector,” said Ric Herrero, executive director of CubaNow, a CubanAmerican group that lobbies for closer ties between the two

countries.

For the time being, non-U.S. travelers will not be able to use Airbnb.

Because of continuing restrictions under the U.S. embargo, the company’s Cuba listing will only be available to U.S. travelers visiting under one of 12 U.S.government approved categories of legal travel, ranging from professional research to religious activities.

While virtually all U.S. travel to Cuba previously required individual licenses from the U.S. Treasury Department, the January changes essentially shift it to an honor system by allowing travel-

ers to fill out a form asserting they are going for one of the approved purposes.

A major drawback for the Cuban private lodging business has been the difficulty of renting from overseas on an island with one of the world’s lower rates of Internet penetration and a constantly malfunctioning phone system. While dozens of websites such as TripAdvisor have listings for lodgings, most only provide phone numbers or email addresses for owners instead of the quick online booking and guaranteed reservations that Airbnb will offer, as it does in more than 190 countries. “Four priority programs have been prepared and will be implemented by the ministry,” Soesilo stated on Saturday.

The minister delivered a speech at the fourth congress of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle.

The programs include a plan to ensure maritime sovereignty, utiliz-

ing natural resources and a program on preservation, infrastructure development through the marine toll access program, and projecting Indonesia as a maritime country.

Soesilo affirmed that in the future, these four programs will give Indonesia a good opportunity to achieve international maritime unity.

“Soekarno’s struggle to maintain maritime sovereignty should be continued,” he emphasized.

According to the minister, Soekarno defended the Indonesian maritime sector after successfully maintaining sovereignty in the Indonesian waters of Java and Natuna for 25 years. (ant)

GIANYAR - Minister of Trade, Rahmat Gobel, clarified the implement Ministry of Trade Regulation No.06/M-DAG/PER/2015 regarding the control and supervision of the procurement, distribution and sale of liquor, reiterating that it will be implemented but that 16 tourists areas will exempt.

“For areas that have been specifically designated as tourist areas, such as Kuta and Sanur, merchants can continue to sell alcohol, provided it is only sold to tourists and never to minors,” said Rahmat Gobel accompanied by the Regent of Gianyar, A.A. Gde Agung Bharata, during a recent visit to the Sukawati Art Market.

A trade system is being designed so that liquor will primarily be sold in restaurants or by those who establish a cooperative for this purpose. Rahmat Gobel also rejected the notion that the ban could possibly have a negative impact on the number of tourists who visit Bali. “Travelers come here looking for the beauty of our nature and culture, furthermore the liquor ban only applies to minors so tourism will not be affected. Also, smaller vendors operating in tourist areas will

continue to be allowed to sell alcohol,” he said.

Trade Ministry Regulation No.06/2015 was set forth in order to restrict the distribution of liquor amongst the youth. Before the regulation, minimarts near schools and places of worship were allowed to sell alcohol freely, thus risking to provoke young people to drink. The ban is one of several measures being taking to allow the younger generation to be able to better compete in the global market.

“Now, minimarts near schools are selling alcoholic beverages. If people start consuming alcohol from a very young age, their health is adversely affected causing them to be unhealthy when they should be at their most productive. If our young people are thus affected, how can we face the global market?” he asked.

Gobel added that the ministry of trade is encouraging customary leaders to join the struggle and participate in helping to control the situation.

When asked about customary youth clubs in Bali which often sells liquor such beer, through their bazaar activities, he re-affirmed that the regulation is intentionally designed to protect

young people from the influence of liquor. Those who produce the beer also have a big responsibility regarding its the circulation in these bazaars.

Early childhood education can prevent radicalism DENPASAR - Early childhood education is a branch of education that can help to prevent the spread of radicalism, Social Affairs Minister Khofifah Indar Parawansa said.

“Through early childhood education, they can learn about tolerance. It (the ideology) should be implanted in them from an early age,” Parawansa stated on Saturday.

“From an early age, they can develop an understanding of cultural diversity and pluralism, and through these efforts, tolerance and moderation can be ingrained in them,” the minister affirmed.

Parawansa hopes that teachers of early childhood education can help to prevent radicalism.

She added that efforts to prevent radicalism should not be carried out in schools alone but in the community as well.

Earlier, an Islamic organization in Indonesia had urged the government to block threatening websites that have yet to be detected by a panel recently set up for the purpose.

“We can see several websites that are dangerous and have the potential to spread radicalism, such as the ideology of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), but they have yet to be blocked. They must be blocked immediately,” Deputy General Chairman of the Executive Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) Asad Said Ali said here on Friday.

He made the request during a discussion on the “Effectiveness of Blocking Radical Websites in the Fight against Terrorism” in the campus of Bhayangkara Jaya Raya University in Jalan Dharmawangsa, South Jakarta.

The websites that the PBNU wants blocked because they carry negative content are Milaibrahim, Ansyarudaullah, ansaruttauhid, jihadologi, azzam blog, sautusallam, and Al-busro.

“They carry radical content and even give lessons on how to make bombs; this indicates that they are closely linked with the ISIS, but have been ignored,” he pointed out.

Ali further noted that the PBNU supported and appreciated the National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT) and the Ministry of Informatics and Communication for blocking 19 websites that were believed to be spreading radicalism.

“I hail the blocking of the 19 websites. It was a good move. More firm actions must be taken, and with regard to protests by operators of 12 of the 19 websites, it is okay as remedial steps can be taken, such as in the case of Dakwatuna.com belonging to the Prosperous Justice Party,” he stressed.

Moreover, Ali observed that several websites that supported the ISIS have addresses and clear operators.

So the BNPT and the Ministry of In-

formatics and Communication must take firm actions against them.

“I believe that operators and content of a website are both criteria to block a website. If, for example, the content of a website belonging to the PBNU helps the ISIS, then PBNU must be reprimanded. However, if the ownership is affiliated to the ISIS, then the website must be blocked straightaway,” he explained.

Ali also pointed out that the ideology of the ISIS was a threat to not only Indonesia but to the world at large.

He emphasized that the group’s ideology was not Islamic because it propagated hatred against other human beings, even Muslims belonging to different sects.

In addition, the government has lifted restrictions from 12 of the 19 Islamic websites that were blocked recently for allegedly promoting radicalism.

After the Forum for Handling Websites carrying Negative Content (FPSIBN) held a meeting on terrorism, SARA (ethnicity, religious, racial and group), and hate issues here on Thursday, the deputy chairman of the forum, Agus Barnas, announced that the operation of the 12 websites will be normalized, but they will continue to be monitored.

“We are restoring only 12 of the 19 blocked websites because only their operators communicated with the forum, which showed their goodwill.

This is besides a dialog that was held with them regarding the importance of maintaining the integrity of the Unitary State of Indonesia,” he remarked. (ant)

He managed to save two of them but unluckily he was then swept away along with Mustafa. The water was so swift and abundant that the two immediately disappeared into the flood water. Information about the incident immediately spread and some nearby residents immediately reported it to the police. Mustafa’s body was found an hour later near the bridge two kilometres away and was then brought to the mortuary at Buleleng Hospital. The search for Bayu Prasetiya, a regular tour guide to this site continued.

An officer of BPBD Buleleng, I Nyoman Darma Kurniawan, said that based on information provided by local residents and the victim’s friends, at the time of incident the river flow was very heavy. Allegedly, the two victims were swept away by the mighty stream. “The victims were alleged to have been swept away by a sudden flood” he said.

The search had to be stopped in Saturday night because the flow of water in the river was still heavy and it was already dark making it difficult for the officers to continue the search, which then resumed on Sunday morning. As of yet (Apr. 12) Bayu Prasetiya has still not been found. (kmb38)

Mexican activist says authorities hinder migrant protest

SINGARAJA - A visitor from Jakarta named Mustafa was found dead, drowned in the extreme Aling-Aling waterfalls at Sambangan village, Sukasada on Saturday (Apr. 11) around 1:30 p.m. The tour guide who accompanied him named Putu Bayu Prasetiya, 24, was washed away with him.

The Buleleng Disaster Mitigation Agency or BPBD’s SAR team, police and local residents, searching for the two victims found Mustafa’s body at the bridge in Sambangan village about two kilometers from the Aling-Aling waterfalls, but after searching until midnight, Bayu Prasetiya had still not been found.

TABANAN - Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman has expressed hope that domestic farm products will be able to meet national needs, and that the country will no longer need to import farm commodities in the future.

“I praise the Tabanan district administration in Bali for achieving self-reliance in food production, with the availability of farm products exceeding local people’s needs,” the minister said during a working visit in Tabanan district recently.

He noted that as the Tabanan district government had continued to step up the development of its agricultural sector, the district had managed to meet local people’s food needs and improve farmers’ living standards.

“Don’t delay in planting rice; don’t leave land unused; and don’t let the community sleep. Let us build this nation till it makes progress at a global level,” he remarked.

Sulaiman also expressed hope that farmers would always be enthusiastic and consistent in developing the agricultural sector as a means to earn a living, as well as

to motivate younger generations to strive towards improving the industry.

This way, the district, which is known as the “rice barn” of Bali province, will be able to take optimum advantage of the huge potential the agricultural sector presents, he affirmed.

During the course of the visit, the minister also handed over 24 tractors, water pumps, and Rp10 billion as funds to improve the irrigation networks in Tabanan district.

Moreover, District Head of Tabanan Ni Putu Eka Wiryastuti, in her address read out by District Secretary Nyoman Wirna Ariwangsa, stated that despite being the “rice barn” of the province, Tanaban still faced constraints and obstacles related to infrastructure development, and that it still needed assistance from the central government.

Wiryastuti added that the district had managed to maintain its rice production of 111 thousand tons, which made it the largest rice producer in Bali. With local rice consumption reaching 56 thousand tons, the district recorded a surplus of 55 thousand tons. (ant)

MEXICO CITY — About 200 Central American migrants who were planning to take part in a traditional “Viacrucis” protest have been hemmed in by Mexican immigration checkpoints and threats to detain them, an activist said Saturday. For several years, migrants have carried wooden crosses in protest marches around Easter week to illustrate their suffering at the hands of criminals and corrupt police.

But the Rev. Alejandro Solalinde, who runs a shelter for migrants, said authorities threatened to arrest on humantrafficking charges the owners of buses rented to take the protesters from the town of Ixtepec in Oaxaca state to the capital. He said the protesters had planned to leave for Mexico City on Thursday.

Almost 200 other migrants have also piled up at the shelter in Ixtepec because they are afraid of being detained at immigration checkpoints set up near the town, leaving Solalinde and his volunteers to feed and house about 420 people. He called the situation “critical.” “I’ve never seen a city under siege like this,” Solalinde said.

Mexico’s National Immigration Institute said in a statement that it keeps its checkpoints at least 6 miles (10 kilomters) from Ixtepec and that its agents are unarmed and human rights observers are present in the area. It said the road checkpoints are needed to detect migrants in the country illegally as well as people smugglers and they help “protect the migrants’ safety.”

The protesters are calling for an end to immigration raids that have largely prevented them from the riding a freight train north toward the U.S. border.

Solalinde said raids begun last summer to stop hitchhiking on the train had forced migrants to use more dangerous routes. He said that while about 15 percent of migrants were victims of robbery, extortion, assault and other forms of abuse previously, about 90 percent are victimized now.

“Before, they could get through faster and look after each other” on the train, Solalinde said. “Before, a stretch that would take them 12 or 13 hours, now it takes them a month. They are taking a dozen longer, more dangerous routes, where they are robbed or extorted.” (ap)

Obama-Castro meeting overshadows anti-US line at summit

From 19th century territorial raids on Mexico to U.S. support for the overthrow of Chile’s socialist government in 1973 and the 1989 invasion of Panama that removed Gen. Manuel Noriega, Washington’s interventions in Latin America were all targets of rebuke during long speeches by Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his allies.

That prompted President Barack Obama to retort, “I always enjoy the history lessons that I receive when I’m here.”

But the historic meeting between Obama and Cuban President Raul Castro on Saturday before the summit closed provides the U.S. and Latin America with an opportunity to move beyond a history of grievances and mistrust and set a course of closer cooperation. There were concerns in the run-up that recent U.S. sanctions on Venezuelan officials could undermine the goodwill generated by Obama’s decision to restore diplomatic ties with Cuba, but they proved unfounded.

The conciliatory tone was set by Castro, who joked that since Cuba had been barred from the previous summits he was entitled to speak well beyond the eight minutes allotted to each of the 30-plus heads of state in attendance. “Since you owe me six summits when you excluded me, six times eight is 48,” he said to laughter.

While much of Castro’s meandering remarks consisted of condemnation of U.S. aggression, the high point came when the aging Cuban leader, in an abrupt about face, professed admiration for Obama, saying he had read his two memoirs and was convinced that he was an “honest man” who hadn’t forgotten his humble roots.

“I have told President Obama that I get very emotional talking about the revolution,” Castro said, noting that Obama wasn’t even born when the U.S. imposed sanctions on the communist island. “I apologize to him because President Obama had no responsibility for this.”

The two leaders later sat down for the first meeting between Cuban and American heads of state since before the 1959 revolution the deposed Cuban strongman Fulgencio Batista.

Even Maduro eased up, forgoing a threat to deliver a petition signed by 10 million Venezuelans calling on Obama to repeal the sanctions.

Instead, as what he called the “Summit of the Truth” was closing, he also briefly spoke with Obama in a private exchange that Maduro said could open the door to meaningful dialogue between the two nations.

The White House said Obama reiterated his concern about the state of democracy in deeply divided Venezuela, but in his public speech Obama refrained from language declaring the situation in Venezuela a national security threat — the justification to freeze the assets of seven officials accused of human rights abuses tied to last year’s anti-government protests. PARIS - The quandary for those who run social networks is how to monetise activity on them without antagonising and thus losing users through distracting ads? The answer, for Twitter, YouTube and Instagram, is to slip in some stealthy ads camouflaged to look like posts from listed contacts.

Each of the networks has inhouse teams whose job is to think up ways to advise brands on how to sneak their marketing into members’ feeds. At YouTube, owned by Google, the effort is called “Zoo”.

Instagram uses the “Creative Shop” of its parent company Facebook.

Twitter’s name for it is the relatively straight-forward “Brand Strategy”.

The strategies adapt to the specific requirements, formats and behaviour on each of the social networks.

In the case of Instagram, the

four-year-old site which boasts 300 million users worldwide who share filtered photos and videos, the advertising push has now extended to France.

The network long resisted introducing sponsored messages, aware that many of its fans were creative types -- artists, photographers, architects -- against having screens of pure images corrupted by tawdry commercial intrusions.

But after Facebook bought it for $715 million in 2012, Instagram started putting in ads. They started in 2013 in the United States, then Australia and Canada in late 2014 and, from mid-March this year, in France.

They hide in plain sight: presented in the same square format, with the same “vintage” filter as user-generated pictures. Only the mention “sponsored” reveals that

it’s there to sell, not share.

“The brand has to express itself as if it’s a person and respect the community,” explained Cedric Atlan, of Facebook’s Creative Shop.

“You have come upon the brand the same way you would a friend or someone from your family. The advertising needs to be integrated and not disturb the user.”

In the meantime, a commissioner of the General Election Commission (KPU) recently revealed that attempts were made to hack into the KPU’s information technology system network during the vote recapitulation process of the presidential election last year.

“Once, there were attempts to ‘penetrate’ our network by using a blocking system, with many of them, including from China,” Hadar Nafis Gumay, the KPU commissioner, noted. (ant)

She explained her decision to choose Prananda to handle creative economy as she believes that the sector has the potential to grow in the next five years.

Muhammad Prananda is the second son of Megawati from her late first husband, first lieutenant Surindro Supjarso.

Megawati has also named Puan Maharani, her daughter from her marriage with late husband Taufik Kiemas, as associate chairperson for political and security affairs.

She noted that Maharani however would not play an active role as she is currently holding the post of coordinating minister for human development and cultural affairs.

“I have sought a permit (for Puan’s

appointment) from the president. So, while she is part of the party’s structure, she will remain non-active,” she affirmed.

President Joko Widodo has decided that no minister in his cabinet should hold a political party post.

2 rescued from Alpine crevasse after nearly a day VIENNA — Austrian officials say two skiers have been rescued from a crevasse in a glacier high in the Alps after nearly 24 hours.

Mountain rescue spokeswoman Maria Riedler told the Austria Press Agency that the men, an Austrian and a German, were plucked out of the crevasse by helicopter on Sunday morning. She said they were cold but in good condition, and had kept each

other awake during the night.

They were taken to a hospital.

The two experienced skiers on Saturday morning fell about 4 meters (13 feet) into the crevasse on the Grosses Wiesbachhorn mountain in Salzburg province at an altitude of some 3,300 meters (10,800 feet).

DHAKA, Bangladesh — Thousands of Bangladeshis poured onto the streets to applaud the execution of an Islamist party official on charges of crimes against humanity during the country’s 1971 independence war, while security forces were on alert Sunday for a possible backlash from his supporters.

Mohammad Qamaruzzaman was hanged Saturday night in the central jail in the capital, Dhaka, a senior prison official, Forman Ali, told reporters. He was buried early Sunday under tight security, according to his brother, Kafil Uddin.

Prosecutors said that Qamaruzzaman, an assistant secretary general of the Jamaat-e-Islami party, headed a militia group that collaborated with the Pakistani army in central Bangladesh in 1971 and was behind the killings of at least 120 unarmed farmers.

Bangladesh blames Pakistani soldiers and local collaborators for the deaths of 3 million people during the nine-month war of independence from Pakistan. An estimated 200,000 women were raped and about 10 million people fled to refugee camps in neighboring India.

Jamaat-e-Islami denounced the execution and called for a nationwide general strike Monday. At the same time, thousands of people applauded the execution on the streets of Dhaka and other cities, a sign of popular ap-

Jamaate-Islami party, which garners about 2 percent to 3 percent of popular vote, has been weakened significantly as most of its senior leaders have already been convicted. Another assistant secretary, Abdul Quader Mollah, was executed in 2013 for similar crimes.

The U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights, Ravina Shamdasani, earlier this week urged Bangladesh not to carry out the execution, saying that Qamaruzzman’s trial did not meet international standards.

The United States was more guard-

ed in its assessment of the trial, but still urged the government not to proceed with the execution.

“We have seen progress, but still believe that further improvements ... could ensure these proceedings meet domestic and international obligations,” State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said in a statement shortly before the execution.

The Bangladeshi government said the trial met the proper standards with the defendant receiving the opportunity to challenge the prosecution’s case in open court and appeal the verdict all the way up to the Supreme Court.

Qamaruzzaman, however, refused to seek presidential clemency.

The initial trials that followed Bangladesh’s independence four decades ago were halted after the assassination of then-president and independence leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman — Hasina’s father — and most of his family members in a 1975 military coup. Hasina revived the process, making good on a pledge she made before 2008 elections. (ap)

PARIS — A 13-year-old boy has been killed by a shark while surfing off the shore of the French island of Reunion in the Indian Ocean.

The island, with an active volcano and striking vistas that attract tourists, has seen a rise in shark activity in recent years.

It was the seventh shark-related death since 2011.

After a non-fatal shark attack in February, authorities banned

all water activities outside select areas watched by lifeguards.

The regional maritime rescue service, known as CROSS, said in a statement that the boy was surfing Sunday in an off-limits area on the west coast of the island when the shark attacked his arms and legs. The statement says rescuers arrived quickly but could not save him. Authorities would not provide further details about the victim. (ap)

PATNA — Maoist rebels attacked a group of policemen patrolling in a central Indian forest, killing seven and wounding another 10, police said.

The ambushed policemen were part of a special task force out searching for rebel activity early Saturday when the militants opened fire, according to R.K. Vij, a top police official in Chhattisgarh state.

Ten wounded officers were airlifted to a hospital in the state capital of Raipur. Few other details

were available from the remote region in Sukma district, 385 kilometers (240 miles) south of Raipur.

The rebels have been called India’s biggest internal security threat, operating in 20 of India’s 28 states with thousands of fighters.

Inspired by Chinese revolutionary leader Mao Zedong, they’ve been fighting for over three decades in central and eastern India to demand the poor receive more jobs and a greater share of wealth from natural resources. (ap)

INDONESIA Indonesia has evacuated 1,036 citizens from Yemen

JAKARTA - Indonesia so far has evacuated 1,036 of its citizens from Yemen, the Foreign Ministry said in its press statement on Sunday.

“Today, (April 12) a total of 43 Indonesian citizens (WNI) are expected to arrive home from Yemen. With their arrival, the number of WNIs already evacuated since December 2014 totals 1,036,” the ministry said in its statement.

According to the foreign ministry, security conditions in Yemen, particularly around the Aden and Sana’a cities were deteriorating. The armed clashes among the conflicting parties were also escalating.

These conditions had posed difficulties in the efforts to evacuate the Indonesian citizens there, thus forcing the team to follow special scenarios for the evacuation process.

The Indonesian government has dispatched an integrated team to Yemen and Salalah, Oman to evacuate WNIs. It mobilized an airplane Boeing

737-400 belonging to the Air Force (TNI AU) and one ship chartered from Djibouti.

The integrated evacuating team consisted of 48 personnel from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the TNI AU, the National Police (Polri) and the State Intelligence Agency (BIN).

The Indonesian citizens’ evacuation operation in Yemen also involves five Indonesian representatives from the Embassy in Sanaa, Embassy in Riyadh, Embassy in Muscat, Embassy in Addis Ababa, and the Consulate General in Jeddah.

The team members assigned in Hudayah, Tarim and Al-Mukalla, Aden (Yemen), Salalah (Oman) and Djibouti continue to collect data and make approaches to the relevant authorities.

They monitor the on-going conditions to carry out the evacuation of

Indonesian citizens out of Yemen.

Besides, the evacuation team in South Yemen is still exploring the availability of ships from Djibouti to pick up WNIs trapped in Aden.

Many ships are afraid to call at the city’s port because of unfavorable and unstable security conditions.

Data collected by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicated that there are still a number of Indonesian citizens who are housed in accommodating facilities in various Yemeni regions for further evacuation.

Based on the data, 58 citizens are still in Sana’a, 37 in Hudaydah, 423 in Tarim, 260 in Mukalla and 111 in Aden.

The Indonesian government continues to appeal its citizens to be prepared for evacuation before the situation becomes further deteriorated. (ant)

Number of slaves found on Indonesian island at almost 550

JAKARTA — The number of enslaved fishermen found on a remote Indonesian island has now reached nearly 550, after a factfinding team returned for a single day to make sure no one had been left behind nearly a week after more than half of the men were removed in a dramatic rescue.

Many of the 210 identified Thursday were Burmese who wanted to leave, but there were a few holdouts — men who claimed they were owed years of back pay from their bosses, said Steve Hamilton, deputy chief of mission at the International Organization for Migration in Jakarta.

An in-depth investigation by The Associated Press published last month led to the discovery of massive rights abuses in the island village of Benjina and surrounding waters. The report traced slave-caught seafood from there to Thailand where it can then enter the supply chains of some of America’s biggest supermarket chains and retailers.

Many of the men interviewed said they were tricked or even kidnapped before being put on boats in Thailand and taken to Indonesia.

They were forced to work almost non-stop under horrendous conditions, some brutally beaten by their Thai captains when they were sick

or caught resting.

Last week, Indonesian authorities rescued around 330 migrants from Benjina, bringing them to the island of Tual, where they are now being sheltered by the government.

Those found Thursday by a team, which included Myanmar officials, remain in Benjina.

It’s unclear who will pay for the mass repatriation. A former slave now in Tual said conditions were relatively good there. He said the men are getting medical care and enough to eat, but their living quarters are cramped and many do not have a change of clothes since they left quickly with only what they were wearing.

Meanwhile, Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi told reporters Thursday in her country’s capital, Naypyitaw, it was up to governments “to protect the rights of the citizens and to bring them back out of bondage.”

“That is the most obvious and very simple solution and unavoidable duty of any responsible government,” she told reporters.

While most fisherman found in Benjina were Burmese, there also were scores of Cambodians. The toll of 550 did not include men — many of whom also were enslaved — from poor parts of Thailand. (ap)

Tambora National Park expected to lure tourists

DOMPU - Mt Tambora area which has just been given a national park status, is expected to lure domestic as well as foreign tourists to West Nusa Tenggara Province. Tourism Minister Arief Yahya expressed his optimism that Tambora National Park could become an attractive destination of ecotourism.

“The opportunities here are ecotourism and agrotourism. The accessibility and attraction are good, now mt’s only a matter of amenity,” the minister said when attending “Tembora Greets The World” event in Doro Ncanga Savana, Dompu.

He said human resources development is crucial in the tourism sector.

The minister hoped Mt Tambora National Park to become one of the national tourism strategic areas.

Head of the West Nusa Tenggara Tourism Office Lalo Mohammad Faozal confirmed that Tambora has become a new tourist destination.

Dompu and Bima have become favorite tracking areas. He called on the central government help build supporting infrastructure and intensify tourism

Earlier, President Joko Widodo emphasized on the importance Mount Tambora National Park, stating that it was an asset that must be preserved and developed to benefit local people.

He made the statement on Saturday while attending the commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the explosion of Mount Tambora and the launching of Mount Tambora National Park.

The president ordered local people to preserve and look after the region well to turn it into an ecotourism destination. “I want you to preserve it and ensure that no one damages it,” he told the people.

Jokowi also hopes that the Tambora Festival is organized as an annual event to bring more added value to national tourism.

“I wish this event is held every year to promote tourism in Bima and Dompu. Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes reasserted their authority over Formula 1 with a commanding Chinese Grand Prix victory. Nico Rosberg had to settle for second place, ahead of the Ferraris of Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen, in a race that was close at times without ever truly coming to life.

Hamilton had made his intentions clear by angling his car very aggressively towards Rosberg’s on the grid.

He duly held his lead off the line, with Rosberg and Vettel stringing out behind the champion through the first stint. The situation became more tense in the middle stint of the two-stop race, as both Rosberg and Vettel closed on Hamilton.

A frustrated Rosberg radioed Mercedes asking if Hamilton could speed up, as his tyres were wearing too much whenever he got closer than two seconds away from his team-mate’s rear wing. When Ferrari brought Vettel in for his second stop ahead of the two Mercedes, Rosberg was pitted a lap later in an effort to prevent his countryman getting an undercut on his new tyres.

But rather than his rivals’ earlier stops putting Hamilton at a disadvantage, he was able to raise his pace considerably on his final laps on soft tyres. Hamilton ran two laps longer than Rosberg and rejoined with a 6s cushion rather than the 2s advantage he had held prior to the stops.

Rosberg reduced Hamilton’s lead slightly before settling for second. A safety car appearance with two laps to go - caused by Max Verstappen’s Toro Rosso parking on the pit straight in a cloud of smoke - made things even more comfortable for Hamilton, as the race finished under yellow.

Vettel was not a match for the Mercedes once all were onto medium tyres and fell away in third.

The Malaysian GP winner then came under late pressure from team-mate Kimi Raikkonen. The Finn quickly cleared both Williams on the opening lap to make up for his qualifying frustration, and though he could not keep pace with the top three at first,

he ran long in his middle stint and made up ground.

Raikkonen was still 1.4s behind Vettel when the late safety car came out and had to be content with fourth.

Williams ran a lonely and distant fifth and sixth with Felipe Massa and Valtteri Bottas, a minute behind the leaders prior to the field being bunched up.

Lotus scored its first points of the year with Romain Grosjean in seventh, but it was a wild race for his team-mate Pastor Maldonado. The Venezuelan got ahead of Grosjean in the first pitstop sequence, before going down the pitlane entry escape road at his second stop.

A spin while trying to recover left him even further behind, and he then became embroiled in a spectacular battle with the McLarens of Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso. After several fraught laps, this came to a head when Button hit the back of the Lotus at Turn 1, ending Maldonado’s race and prompting a stewards’ investigation.

Despite that, McLaren still got its first double finish of 2015 with Alonso and Button’s battered cars 12th and 13th. Until his late engine failure, Verstappen was on course for eighth, having sliced through the field with some very accomplished overtaking.

But his problem completed a terrible day for Renault and the Red Bullowned teams.

Daniel Ricciardo had tumbled to 17th with a terrible start and made heavy weather of coming back through the field to ninth between the Saubers of Felipe Nasr and Marcus Ericsson, which scored again.

Daniil Kvyat was also out early with a suspected engine failure, while Carlos Sainz Jr spun at Turn 1 in the opening laps and later lost time with a gearbox problem before finishing between the McLarens and Manors in 14th.

Force India spent a while in the points as a unique three-stop strategy for Sergio Perez shook out, but in the end 11th was his limit. A gearbox failure ended team-mate Nico Hulkenberg’s race. (rtr)

MIAMI — Lou Williams scored 29 points, DeMar DeRozan added 24 and the Toronto Raptors put the Miami Heat on the brink of playoff elimination with a 107-104 victory Saturday night.

Greivis Vasquez and Kyle Lowry each scored 12 points and Patrick Patterson had 11 for the Raptors, who clinched home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

Dwyane Wade scored 30 points for the Heat, who can only get to 37 wins — the number that Brooklyn and Boston are already at, putting them in the No. 7 and No. 8 spots in the Eastern Conference race. Goran Dragic scored 22 points for Miami and Hassan Whiteside finished with 16 points and 18 rebounds.

But Whiteside also missed 12 free throws, going 4 for 16, and as a team the Heat went 24 of 44 from the line.

Williams hit a 3-pointer with 31.2 seconds left to put the Raptors up by five, and that just about sealed

not just the game but Miami’s playoff fate. The Heat must win their last two games, and get a ton of help to reach the postseason for the seventh straight year.

Real close gap after Barca let 2-0 lead slip

BARCELONA - Barcelona’s lead at the top of La Liga was cut to two points on Saturday as they squandered a two-goal advantage to draw 2-2 at Sevilla while Real Madrid powered their way to a 3-0 home win over Eibar. Neymar set up Argentine Lionel Messi for Barca’s first goal and the Brazilian then converted an inch-perfect free kick after 31 minutes but a determined Sevilla, who are now unbeaten in 32 home games, never gave up.

Ever Banega struck a 30-metre drive into the corner that Claudio Bravo failed to keep out in the 38th minute and, after chances at both ends, substitute Kevin Gameiro grabbed the equaliser six minutes from time. “We were the better side but in the second half they pushed more and the game was more even,” Barca midfielder Sergio Busquets told reporters.

“Whether it is just or not, it’s what happened and we have to accept it.” Elsewhere, Santi Mina hit four goals and Joaquin Larrivey scored twice as Celta Vigo crushed Rayo Vallecano 6-1 while Thomas Partey’s double helped Almeria sweep past Granada 3-0.

The game was wide open in the second half and Luis Suarez had an off-day as he failed to make the most of a couple of clear chances. The Barca striker was made to pay dearly when Gameiro scored following a Sevilla counter-attack.

SARANSK, Russia — Saransk’s stadium for the 2018 World Cup is supposed to raise the profile of this little-known Russian city, but for now Alexei Merkushkin is just trying to keep costs down.

As Minister of Special Programs for the region that includes this city of 300,000 people south-east of Moscow, Merkushkin’s job is to make sure the smallest of Russia’s 11 host cities is ready to welcome fans not just to its new 45,000-seat stadium, but also the hotels and transport links that are supposed to transform Saransk in time for 2018.

Constructing the arena is set to cost 15.66 billion rubles ($300 million), fully funded by the federal budget, with a further $10.5 million earlier spent on design costs. Turning a provincial city into an international destination is not easy. Saransk normally sees only one flight from Moscow per day and the airport needs expansion to cope with World Cup crowds. The city was a surprise choice as a World Cup host. Many Russians would have trouble finding it on a map and it’s hardly an eye-catching location,

BARCELONA - Barcelona’s lead at the top of La Liga was cut to two points on Saturday as they squandered a two-goal advantage to draw 2-2 at Sevilla while Real Madrid powered their way to a 3-0 home win over Eibar. Neymar set up Argentine Lionel Messi for Barca’s first goal and the Brazilian then converted an inch-perfect free kick after 31 minutes but a determined Sevilla, who are now unbeaten in 32 home games, never gave up.

Ever Banega struck a 30-metre drive into the corner that Claudio Bravo failed to keep out in the 38th minute and, after chances at both ends, substitute Kevin Gameiro grabbed the equaliser six minutes from time. “We were the better side but in the second half they pushed more and the game was more even,” Barca midfielder Sergio Busquets told reporters.

“Whether it is just or not, it’s what happened and we have to accept it.” Elsewhere, Santi Mina hit four goals and Joaquin Larrivey scored twice as Celta Vigo crushed Rayo Vallecano 6-1 while Thomas Partey’s double helped Almeria sweep past Granada 3-0.

Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes reasserted their authority over Formula 1 with a commanding Chinese Grand Prix victory. Nico Rosberg had to settle for second place, ahead of the Ferraris of Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen, in a race that was close at times without ever truly coming to life.

Hamilton had made his intentions clear by angling his car very aggressively towards Rosberg’s on the grid.

He duly held his lead off the line, with Rosberg and Vettel stringing out behind the champion through the first stint. The situation became more tense in the middle stint of the two-stop race, as both Rosberg and Vettel closed on Hamilton.

A frustrated Rosberg radioed Mercedes asking if Hamilton could speed up, as his tyres were wearing too much whenever he got closer than two seconds away from his team-mate’s rear wing. When Ferrari brought Vettel in for his second stop ahead of the two Mercedes, Rosberg was pitted a lap later in an effort to prevent his countryman getting an undercut on his new tyres.

But rather than his rivals’ earlier stops putting Hamilton at a disadvantage, he was able to raise his pace considerably on his final laps on soft tyres. Hamilton ran two laps longer than Rosberg and rejoined with a 6s cushion rather than the 2s advantage he had held prior to the stops.

Rosberg reduced Hamilton’s lead slightly before settling for second. A safety car appearance with two laps to go - caused by Max Verstappen’s Toro Rosso parking on the pit straight in a cloud of smoke - made things even more comfortable for Hamilton, as the race finished under yellow.

Vettel was not a match for the Mercedes once all were onto medium tyres and fell away in third.

The Malaysian GP winner then came under late pressure from team-mate Kimi Raikkonen. The Finn quickly cleared both Williams on the opening lap to make up for his qualifying frustration, and though he could not keep pace with the top three at first,

he ran long in his middle stint and made up ground.

Raikkonen was still 1.4s behind Vettel when the late safety car came out and had to be content with fourth.

Williams ran a lonely and distant fifth and sixth with Felipe Massa and Valtteri Bottas, a minute behind the leaders prior to the field being bunched up.

Lotus scored its first points of the year with Romain Grosjean in seventh, but it was a wild race for his team-mate Pastor Maldonado. The Venezuelan got ahead of Grosjean in the first pitstop sequence, before going down the pitlane entry escape road at his second stop.

A spin while trying to recover left him even further behind, and he then became embroiled in a spectacular battle with the McLarens of Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso. After several fraught laps, this came to a head when Button hit the back of the Lotus at Turn 1, ending Maldonado’s race and prompting a stewards’ investigation.

Despite that, McLaren still got its first double finish of 2015 with Alonso and Button’s battered cars 12th and 13th. Until his late engine failure, Verstappen was on course for eighth, having sliced through the field with some very accomplished overtaking.

But his problem completed a terrible day for Renault and the Red Bullowned teams.

Daniel Ricciardo had tumbled to 17th with a terrible start and made heavy weather of coming back through the field to ninth between the Saubers of Felipe Nasr and Marcus Ericsson, which scored again.

Daniil Kvyat was also out early with a suspected engine failure, while Carlos Sainz Jr spun at Turn 1 in the opening laps and later lost time with a gearbox problem before finishing between the McLarens and Manors in 14th.

Force India spent a while in the points as a unique three-stop strategy for Sergio Perez shook out, but in the end 11th was his limit. A gearbox failure ended team-mate Nico Hulkenberg’s race. (rtr)

MIAMI — Lou Williams scored 29 points, DeMar DeRozan added 24 and the Toronto Raptors put the Miami Heat on the brink of playoff elimination with a 107-104 victory Saturday night.

Greivis Vasquez and Kyle Lowry each scored 12 points and Patrick Patterson had 11 for the Raptors, who clinched home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

Dwyane Wade scored 30 points for the Heat, who can only get to 37 wins — the number that Brooklyn and Boston are already at, putting them in the No. 7 and No. 8 spots in the Eastern Conference race. Goran Dragic scored 22 points for Miami and Hassan Whiteside finished with 16 points and 18 rebounds.

But Whiteside also missed 12 free throws, going 4 for 16, and as a team the Heat went 24 of 44 from the line.

2 rescued from Alpine crevasse after nearly a day VIENNA — Austrian officials say two skiers have been rescued from a crevasse in a glacier high in the Alps after nearly 24 hours.

Mountain rescue spokeswoman Maria Riedler told the Austria Press Agency that the men, an Austrian and a German, were plucked out of the crevasse by helicopter on Sunday morning. She said they were cold but in good condition, and had kept each

other awake during the night.

They were taken to a hospital.

The two experienced skiers on Saturday morning fell about 4 meters (13 feet) into the crevasse on the Grosses Wiesbachhorn mountain in Salzburg province at an altitude of some 3,300 meters (10,800 feet).

The men alerted authorities by cellphone, but bad weather thwarted rescue attempts on Saturday. (ap)

Bangladesh on alert after execution, applauded by many

DHAKA, Bangladesh — Thousands of Bangladeshis poured onto the streets to applaud the execution of an Islamist party official on charges of crimes against humanity during the country’s 1971 independence war, while security forces were on alert Sunday for a possible backlash from his supporters.

Mohammad Qamaruzzaman was hanged Saturday night in the central jail in the capital, Dhaka, a senior prison official, Forman Ali, told reporters. He was buried early Sunday under tight security, according to his brother, Kafil Uddin.

Prosecutors said that Qamaruzzaman, an assistant secretary general of the Jamaat-e-Islami party, headed a militia group that collaborated with the Pakistani army in central Bangladesh in 1971 and was behind the killings of at least 120 unarmed farmers.

Bangladesh blames Pakistani soldiers and local collaborators for the deaths of 3 million people during the nine-month war of independence from Pakistan. An estimated 200,000 women were raped and about 10 million people fled to refugee camps in neighboring India.

Jamaat-e-Islami denounced the execution and called for a nationwide general strike Monday. At the same time, thousands of people applauded the execution on the streets of Dhaka and other cities, a sign of popular ap-

proval of the war crime trials launched

by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

More rallies supporting the execution were planned for Sunday.

“We are happy that justice has been delivered finally,” said Mohammad Al Masum, a student at Dhaka University, who joined a procession in Shabagh Square. “I did not see the war but I am sure the families that lost their dear ones will be happy today.”

Hasina has vowed to continue the trials despite pressure from abroad and the opposition at home. Jamaate-Islami party, which garners about 2 percent to 3 percent of popular vote, has been weakened significantly as most of its senior leaders have already been convicted. Another assistant secretary, Abdul Quader Mollah, was executed in 2013 for similar crimes.

The U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights, Ravina Shamdasani, earlier this week urged Bangladesh not to carry out the execution, saying that Qamaruzzman’s trial did not meet international standards.

The United States was more guard-

ed in its assessment of the trial, but still urged the government not to proceed with the execution.

“We have seen progress, but still believe that further improvements ... could ensure these proceedings meet domestic and international obligations,” State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said in a statement shortly before the execution.

The Bangladeshi government said the trial met the proper standards with the defendant receiving the opportunity to challenge the prosecution’s case in open court and appeal the verdict all the way up to the Supreme Court.

Qamaruzzaman, however, refused to seek presidential clemency.

The initial trials that followed Bangladesh’s independence four decades ago were halted after the assassination of then-president and independence leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman — Hasina’s father — and most of his family members in a 1975 military coup. Hasina revived the process, making good on a pledge she made before 2008 elections. (ap)

PARIS — A 13-year-old boy has been killed by a shark while surfing off the shore of the French island of Reunion in the Indian Ocean.

The island, with an active volcano and striking vistas that attract tourists, has seen a rise in shark activity in recent years.

It was the seventh shark-related death since 2011.

After a non-fatal shark attack in February, authorities banned

all water activities outside select areas watched by lifeguards.

The regional maritime rescue service, known as CROSS, said in a statement that the boy was surfing Sunday in an off-limits area on the west coast of the island when the shark attacked his arms and legs. The statement says rescuers arrived quickly but could not save him. Authorities would not provide further details about the victim. (ap)

PATNA — Maoist rebels attacked a group of policemen patrolling in a central Indian forest, killing seven and wounding another 10, police said.

The ambushed policemen were part of a special task force out searching for rebel activity early Saturday when the militants opened fire, according to R.K. Vij, a top police official in Chhattisgarh state.

Ten wounded officers were airlifted to a hospital in the state capital of Raipur. Few other details

were available from the remote region in Sukma district, 385 kilometers (240 miles) south of Raipur.

The rebels have been called India’s biggest internal security threat, operating in 20 of India’s 28 states with thousands of fighters.

Inspired by Chinese revolutionary leader Mao Zedong, they’ve been fighting for over three decades in central and eastern India to demand the poor receive more jobs and a greater share of wealth from natural resources. (ap)

INDONESIA Indonesia has evacuated 1,036 citizens from Yemen

JAKARTA - Indonesia so far has evacuated 1,036 of its citizens from Yemen, the Foreign Ministry said in its press statement on Sunday.

“Today, (April 12) a total of 43 Indonesian citizens (WNI) are expected to arrive home from Yemen. With their arrival, the number of WNIs already evacuated since December 2014 totals 1,036,” the ministry said in its statement.

According to the foreign ministry, security conditions in Yemen, particularly around the Aden and Sana’a cities were deteriorating. The armed clashes among the conflicting parties were also escalating.

These conditions had posed difficulties in the efforts to evacuate the Indonesian citizens there, thus forcing the team to follow special scenarios for the evacuation process.

The Indonesian government has dispatched an integrated team to Yemen and Salalah, Oman to evacuate WNIs. It mobilized an airplane Boeing

737-400 belonging to the Air Force (TNI AU) and one ship chartered from Djibouti.

The integrated evacuating team consisted of 48 personnel from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the TNI AU, the National Police (Polri) and the State Intelligence Agency (BIN).

The Indonesian citizens’ evacuation operation in Yemen also involves five Indonesian representatives from the Embassy in Sanaa, Embassy in Riyadh, Embassy in Muscat, Embassy in Addis Ababa, and the Consulate General in Jeddah.

The team members assigned in Hudayah, Tarim and Al-Mukalla, Aden (Yemen), Salalah (Oman) and Djibouti continue to collect data and make approaches to the relevant authorities.

They monitor the on-going conditions to carry out the evacuation of

Indonesian citizens out of Yemen.

Besides, the evacuation team in South Yemen is still exploring the availability of ships from Djibouti to pick up WNIs trapped in Aden.

Many ships are afraid to call at the city’s port because of unfavorable and unstable security conditions.

Data collected by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicated that there are still a number of Indonesian citizens who are housed in accommodating facilities in various Yemeni regions for further evacuation.

Based on the data, 58 citizens are still in Sana’a, 37 in Hudaydah, 423 in Tarim, 260 in Mukalla and 111 in Aden.

The Indonesian government continues to appeal its citizens to be prepared for evacuation before the situation becomes further deteriorated. (ant)

Number of slaves found on Indonesian island at almost 550

JAKARTA — The number of enslaved fishermen found on a remote Indonesian island has now reached nearly 550, after a factfinding team returned for a single day to make sure no one had been left behind nearly a week after more than half of the men were removed in a dramatic rescue.

Many of the 210 identified Thursday were Burmese who wanted to leave, but there were a few holdouts — men who claimed they were owed years of back pay from their bosses, said Steve Hamilton, deputy chief of mission at the International Organization for Migration in Jakarta.

An in-depth investigation by The Associated Press published last month led to the discovery of massive rights abuses in the island village of Benjina and surrounding waters. The report traced slave-caught seafood from there to Thailand where it can then enter the supply chains of some of America’s biggest supermarket chains and retailers.

Many of the men interviewed said they were tricked or even kidnapped before being put on boats in Thailand and taken to Indonesia.

They were forced to work almost non-stop under horrendous conditions, some brutally beaten by their Thai captains when they were sick

or caught resting.

Last week, Indonesian authorities rescued around 330 migrants from Benjina, bringing them to the island of Tual, where they are now being sheltered by the government.

Those found Thursday by a team, which included Myanmar officials, remain in Benjina.

It’s unclear who will pay for the mass repatriation. A former slave now in Tual said conditions were relatively good there. He said the men are getting medical care and enough to eat, but their living quarters are cramped and many do not have a change of clothes since they left quickly with only what they were wearing.

Meanwhile, Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi told reporters Thursday in her country’s capital, Naypyitaw, it was up to governments “to protect the rights of the citizens and to bring them back out of bondage.”

“That is the most obvious and very simple solution and unavoidable duty of any responsible government,” she told reporters.

While most fisherman found in Benjina were Burmese, there also were scores of Cambodians. The toll of 550 did not include men — many of whom also were enslaved — from poor parts of Thailand. (ap)

Tambora National Park expected to lure tourists

DOMPU - Mt Tambora area which has just been given a national park status, is expected to lure domestic as well as foreign tourists to West Nusa Tenggara Province. Tourism Minister Arief Yahya expressed his optimism that Tambora National Park could become an attractive destination of ecotourism.

“The opportunities here are ecotourism and agrotourism. The accessibility and attraction are good, now mt’s only a matter of amenity,” the minister said when attending “Tembora Greets The World” event in Doro Ncanga Savana, Dompu.

He said human resources development is crucial in the tourism sector.

The minister hoped Mt Tambora National Park to become one of the national tourism strategic areas.

Head of the West Nusa Tenggara Tourism Office Lalo Mohammad Faozal confirmed that Tambora has become a new tourist destination.

Dompu and Bima have become favorite tracking areas. He called on the central government help build supporting infrastructure and intensify tourism

promotion abroad.

Earlier, President Joko Widodo emphasized on the importance Mount Tambora National Park, stating that it was an asset that must be preserved and developed to benefit local people.

He made the statement on Saturday while attending the commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the explosion of Mount Tambora and the launching of Mount Tambora National Park.

The president ordered local people to preserve and look after the region well to turn it into an ecotourism destination. “I want you to preserve it and ensure that no one damages it,” he told the people.

Jokowi also hopes that the Tambora Festival is organized as an annual event to bring more added value to national tourism.

“I wish this event is held every year to promote tourism in Bima and Dompu. Eurogroup wants Greece’s list of reforms by April 20

Eurogroup ministers have set the deadline in order to have sufficient time to examine Athens’ proposal ahead of a meeting on April 24, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung reported, quoting unnamed representatives in the negotiations.

Twitter, YouTube, Instagram work on stealth advertising

PARIS - The quandary for those who run social networks is how to monetise activity on them without antagonising and thus losing users through distracting ads? The answer, for Twitter, YouTube and Instagram, is to slip in some stealthy ads camouflaged to look like posts from listed contacts.

Each of the networks has inhouse teams whose job is to think up ways to advise brands on how to sneak their marketing into members’ feeds. At YouTube, owned by Google, the effort is called “Zoo”.

Twitter’s name for it is the relatively straight-forward “Brand Strategy”.

The strategies adapt to the specific requirements, formats and behaviour on each of the social networks.

In the case of Instagram, the

four-year-old site which boasts 300 million users worldwide who share filtered photos and videos, the advertising push has now extended to France.

The network long resisted introducing sponsored messages, aware that many of its fans were creative types -- artists, photographers, architects -- against having screens of pure images corrupted by tawdry commercial intrusions.

But after Facebook bought it for $715 million in 2012, Instagram started putting in ads. They started in 2013 in the United States, then Australia and Canada in late 2014 and, from mid-March this year, in France.

They hide in plain sight: presented in the same square format, with the same “vintage” filter as user-generated pictures. Only the mention “sponsored” reveals that

it’s there to sell, not share.

“The brand has to express itself as if it’s a person and respect the community,” explained Cedric Atlan, of Facebook’s Creative Shop.

“You have come upon the brand the same way you would a friend or someone from your family. The advertising needs to be integrated and not disturb the user.”

The specialist teams are experienced, well versed in advertising and marketing, often having been snapped up from ad agencies.

The 39 suspects comprise four Chinese nationals and 35 Taiwanese.

In the meantime, a commissioner of the General Election Commission (KPU) recently revealed that attempts were made to hack into the KPU’s information technology system network during the vote recapitulation process of the presidential election last year.

“Once, there were attempts to ‘penetrate’ our network by using a blocking system, with many of them, including from China,” Hadar Nafis Gumay, the KPU commissioner, noted. (ant)

Megawati Soekarnoputri, who is the daughter of Indonesia’s first President Soekarno, was reelected and installed as general chairperson of the party for the 2015-2020 term of office on Thursday.

Prananda was named associate chairman for creative economy affairs for the period of 2015-2020.

“Prananda is a quiet person and has interest in creative economy,” Megawati remarked while announcing Prananda’s appointment.

She explained her decision to choose Prananda to handle creative economy as she believes that the sector has the potential to grow in the next five years.

Muhammad Prananda is the second son of Megawati from her late first husband, first lieutenant Surindro Supjarso.

Megawati has also named Puan Maharani, her daughter from her marriage with late husband Taufik Kiemas, as associate chairperson for political and security affairs.

She noted that Maharani however would not play an active role as she is currently holding the post of coordinating minister for human development and cultural affairs.

“I have sought a permit (for Puan’s

appointment) from the president. So, while she is part of the party’s structure, she will remain non-active,” she affirmed.

President Joko Widodo has decided that no minister in his cabinet should hold a political party post.

He managed to save two of them but unluckily he was then swept away along with Mustafa. The water was so swift and abundant that the two immediately disappeared into the flood water. Information about the incident immediately spread and some nearby residents immediately reported it to the police. Mustafa’s body was found an hour later near the bridge two kilometres away and was then brought to the mortuary at Buleleng Hospital. The search for Bayu Prasetiya, a regular tour guide to this site continued.

An officer of BPBD Buleleng, I Nyoman Darma Kurniawan, said that based on information provided by local residents and the victim’s friends, at the time of incident the river flow was very heavy. Allegedly, the two victims were swept away by the mighty stream. “The victims were alleged to have been swept away by a sudden flood” he said.

The search had to be stopped in Saturday night because the flow of water in the river was still heavy and it was already dark making it difficult for the officers to continue the search, which then resumed on Sunday morning. As of yet (Apr. 12) Bayu Prasetiya has still not been found. (kmb38)

Mexican activist says authorities hinder migrant protest

SINGARAJA - A visitor from Jakarta named Mustafa was found dead, drowned in the extreme Aling-Aling waterfalls at Sambangan village, Sukasada on Saturday (Apr. 11) around 1:30 p.m. The tour guide who accompanied him named Putu Bayu Prasetiya, 24, was washed away with him.

The Buleleng Disaster Mitigation Agency or BPBD’s SAR team, police and local residents, searching for the two victims found Mustafa’s body at the bridge in Sambangan village about two kilometers from the Aling-Aling waterfalls, but after searching until midnight, Bayu Prasetiya had still not been found.

According to reports from the search party, Bayu, a local resident, had escorted the victim and five friends to visit the Aling-Aling waterfalls. When they arrived at the waterfalls, Mustafa and two of his friends proceeded to bathe in the pool at the base of the falls, known to be extreme. TABANAN - Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman has expressed hope that domestic farm products will be able to meet national needs, and that the country will no longer need to import farm commodities in the future.

“I praise the Tabanan district administration in Bali for achieving self-reliance in food production, with the availability of farm products exceeding local people’s needs,” the minister said during a working visit in Tabanan district recently.

He noted that as the Tabanan district government had continued to step up the development of its agricultural sector, the district had managed to meet local people’s food needs and improve farmers’ living standards.

“Don’t delay in planting rice; don’t leave land unused; and don’t let the community sleep. Let us build this nation till it makes progress at a global level,” he remarked.

Sulaiman also expressed hope that farmers would always be enthusiastic and consistent in developing the agricultural sector as a means to earn a living, as well as

to motivate younger generations to strive towards improving the industry.

This way, the district, which is known as the “rice barn” of Bali province, will be able to take optimum advantage of the huge potential the agricultural sector presents, he affirmed.

During the course of the visit, the minister also handed over 24 tractors, water pumps, and Rp10 billion as funds to improve the irrigation networks in Tabanan district.

Moreover, District Head of Tabanan Ni Putu Eka Wiryastuti, in her address read out by District Secretary Nyoman Wirna Ariwangsa, stated that despite being the “rice barn” of the province, Tanaban still faced constraints and obstacles related to infrastructure development, and that it still needed assistance from the central government.

Wiryastuti added that the district had managed to maintain its rice production of 111 thousand tons, which made it the largest rice producer in Bali. With local rice consumption reaching 56 thousand tons, the district recorded a surplus of 55 thousand tons. (ant)

MEXICO CITY — About 200 Central American migrants who were planning to take part in a traditional “Viacrucis” protest have been hemmed in by Mexican immigration checkpoints and threats to detain them, an activist said Saturday. For several years, migrants have carried wooden crosses in protest marches around Easter week to illustrate their suffering at the hands of criminals and corrupt police.

But the Rev. Alejandro Solalinde, who runs a shelter for migrants, said authorities threatened to arrest on humantrafficking charges the owners of buses rented to take the protesters from the town of Ixtepec in Oaxaca state to the capital. He said the protesters had planned to leave for Mexico City on Thursday.

Almost 200 other migrants have also piled up at the shelter in Ixtepec because they are afraid of being detained at immigration checkpoints set up near the town, leaving Solalinde and his volunteers to feed and house about 420 people. He called the situation “critical.” “I’ve never seen a city under siege like this,” Solalinde said.

Mexico’s National Immigration Institute said in a statement that it keeps its checkpoints at least 6 miles (10 kilomters) from Ixtepec and that its agents are unarmed and human rights observers are present in the area. It said the road checkpoints are needed to detect migrants in the country illegally as well as people smugglers and they help “protect the migrants’ safety.”

The protesters are calling for an end to immigration raids that have largely prevented them from the riding a freight train north toward the U.S. border.

Solalinde said raids begun last summer to stop hitchhiking on the train had forced migrants to use more dangerous routes. He said that while about 15 percent of migrants were victims of robbery, extortion, assault and other forms of abuse previously, about 90 percent are victimized now.

“Before, they could get through faster and look after each other” on the train, Solalinde said. “Before, a stretch that would take them 12 or 13 hours, now it takes them a month. They are taking a dozen longer, more dangerous routes, where they are robbed or extorted.” (ap)

Obama-Castro meeting overshadows anti-US line at summit

PANAMA CITY — As usual when Latin America leftist leaders get together with U.S. officials, there were plenty of swipes at the U.S. during the seventh Summit of the Americas.

From 19th century territorial raids on Mexico to U.S. support for the overthrow of Chile’s socialist government in 1973 and the 1989 invasion of Panama that removed Gen. Manuel Noriega, Washington’s interventions in Latin America were all targets of rebuke during long speeches by Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his allies.

That prompted President Barack Obama to retort, “I always enjoy the history lessons that I receive when I’m here.”

But the historic meeting between Obama and Cuban President Raul Castro on Saturday before the summit closed provides the U.S. and Latin America with an opportunity to move beyond a history of grievances and mistrust and set a course of closer cooperation. There were concerns in the run-up that recent U.S. sanctions on Venezuelan officials could undermine the goodwill generated by Obama’s decision to restore diplomatic ties with Cuba, but they proved unfounded.

The conciliatory tone was set by Castro, who joked that since Cuba had been barred from the previous summits he was entitled to speak well beyond the eight minutes allotted to each of the 30-plus heads of state in attendance. “Since you owe me six summits when you excluded me, six times eight is 48,” he said to laughter.

While much of Castro’s meandering remarks consisted of condemnation of U.S. aggression, the high point came when the aging Cuban leader, in an abrupt about face, professed admiration for Obama, saying he had read his two memoirs and was convinced that he was an “honest man” who hadn’t forgotten his humble roots.

“I have told President Obama that I get very emotional talking about the revolution,” Castro said, noting that Obama wasn’t even born when the U.S. imposed sanctions on the communist island. “I apologize to him because President Obama had no responsibility for this.”

The two leaders later sat down for the first meeting between Cuban and American heads of state since before the 1959 revolution the deposed Cuban strongman Fulgencio Batista.

Even Maduro eased up, forgoing a threat to deliver a petition signed by 10 million Venezuelans calling on Obama to repeal the sanctions.

Instead, as what he called the “Summit of the Truth” was closing, he also briefly spoke with Obama in a private exchange that Maduro said could open the door to meaningful dialogue between the two nations.

The White House said Obama reiterated his concern about the state of democracy in deeply divided Venezuela, but in his public speech Obama refrained from language declaring the situation in Venezuela a national security threat — the justification to freeze the assets of seven officials accused of human rights abuses tied to last year’s anti-government protests. Airbnb offers Cuba lodgings in major US business expansion

HAVANA — The popular online home-rental service Airbnb is allowing American travelers to book lodging in Cuba in the most significant U.S. business expansion on the island since the declaration of detente between the two countries late last year.

For a half-century, the U.S. trade embargo had blocked such businesses from entering the Cuban market. In January, however, the Obama administration loosened a series of restrictions on U.S. business in an attempt to encourage the growth of the island’s small private sector.

Airbnb searches for “Cuba” now turn up more than 1,000 properties across the island, with 40 percent in Havana and the rest in tourist destinations such as Cienfuegos a few hours away on the southern coast. The company has been sending teams of representatives to Cuba for three months to sign up home owners, and plans to expand steadily in coming months.

“We believe that Cuba could become one of Airbnb’s biggest markets in Latin America,” said Kay Kuehne, regional director for Airbnb, the website and mobile app that allows users to book rooms in more than 1 million private homes around the world.

One of the most developed and important elements of Cuba’s entrepreneurial sector is a network of thousands of privately owned rooms and houses for tourists.

Starting in the post-Soviet economic crisis of the 1990s as homey, bed and breakfast-style alternatives to Cuba’s generally grim state-run hotels, “casas particulares,” or private homes, have expanded into an industry with options ranging from small apartments in central Havana to multi-room beach houses with top-notch food and maid service.

The Airbnb move could be the most significant development in terms of putting money in the pockets of entrepreneurs across the island and bolstering them in a stagnant state-run economy — leading goals for the Obama administration in warming relations with Cuba.

“I think this is going to help our business prosper, to definitely improve, not just private business, but everything here,” said Israel Rivero, who owns an immaculately renovated, pre-war apartment in central Havana. He charges $25 a night per room, but the price will go to $30 on Airbnb to cover fees and currency exchange costs.

authorities.

Asked about the expansion, the U.S. State Department said Thursday that “we applaud efforts to help the Cuban people, including the nascent private sector, take advantage of new opportunities to move Cuba towards greater openness and prosperity.”

Cuba has been wrestling with how to accommodate a surge of travelers since the announcement of detente. Trips to the island have been up nearly 20 percent in recent months, mostly by non-

U.S. travelers, and many hotels are fully booked, particularly the few able to offer service close to international standards.

“Airbnb’s momentous expansion into Cuba represents the first move by a major American company to fully seize the opportunities presented by both our new Cuba policy and the island’s burgeoning entrepreneurial sector,” said Ric Herrero, executive director of CubaNow, a CubanAmerican group that lobbies for closer ties between the two

countries.

For the time being, non-U.S. travelers will not be able to use Airbnb.

Because of continuing restrictions under the U.S. embargo, the company’s Cuba listing will only be available to U.S. travelers visiting under one of 12 U.S.government approved categories of legal travel, ranging from professional research to religious activities.

While virtually all U.S. travel to Cuba previously required individual licenses from the U.S. Treasury Department, the January changes essentially shift it to an honor system by allowing travel-

ers to fill out a form asserting they are going for one of the approved purposes.

A major drawback for the Cuban private lodging business has been the difficulty of renting from overseas on an island with one of the world’s lower rates of Internet penetration and a constantly malfunctioning phone system. While dozens of websites such as TripAdvisor have listings for lodgings, most only provide phone numbers or email addresses for owners instead of the quick online booking and guaranteed reservations that Airbnb will offer, as it does in more than 190 countries. The minister delivered a speech at the fourth congress of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle.

The programs include a plan to ensure maritime sovereignty, utiliz-

ing natural resources and a program on preservation, infrastructure development through the marine toll access program, and projecting Indonesia as a maritime country.

Soesilo affirmed that in the future, these four programs will give Indonesia a good opportunity to achieve international maritime unity.

“Soekarno’s struggle to maintain maritime sovereignty should be continued,” he emphasized.

According to the minister, Soekarno defended the Indonesian maritime sector after successfully maintaining sovereignty in the Indonesian waters of Java and Natuna for 25 years. (ant)

GIANYAR - Minister of Trade, Rahmat Gobel, clarified the implement Ministry of Trade Regulation No.06/M-DAG/PER/2015 regarding the control and supervision of the procurement, distribution and sale of liquor, reiterating that it will be implemented but that 16 tourists areas will exempt.

“For areas that have been specifically designated as tourist areas, such as Kuta and Sanur, merchants can continue to sell alcohol, provided it is only sold to tourists and never to minors,” said Rahmat Gobel accompanied by the Regent of Gianyar, A.A. Gde Agung Bharata, during a recent visit to the Sukawati Art Market.

A trade system is being designed so that liquor will primarily be sold in restaurants or by those who establish a cooperative for this purpose. Rahmat Gobel also rejected the notion that the ban could possibly have a negative impact on the number of tourists who visit Bali. “Travelers come here looking for the beauty of our nature and culture, furthermore the liquor ban only applies to minors so tourism will not be affected. Also, smaller vendors operating in tourist areas will

continue to be allowed to sell alcohol,” he said.

Trade Ministry Regulation No.06/2015 was set forth in order to restrict the distribution of liquor amongst the youth. Before the regulation, minimarts near schools and places of worship were allowed to sell alcohol freely, thus risking to provoke young people to drink. The ban is one of several measures being taking to allow the younger generation to be able to better compete in the global market.

“Now, minimarts near schools are selling alcoholic beverages. If people start consuming alcohol from a very young age, their health is adversely affected causing them to be unhealthy when they should be at their most productive. If our young people are thus affected, how can we face the global market?” he asked.

Gobel added that the ministry of trade is encouraging customary leaders to join the struggle and participate in helping to control the situation.

When asked about customary youth clubs in Bali which often sells liquor such beer, through their bazaar activities, he re-affirmed that the regulation is intentionally designed to protect

young people from the influence of liquor. Those who produce the beer also have a big responsibility regarding its the circulation in these bazaars.

“In fact Ministry of Trade Regulation No.16/2015-red) prohibits the sale of beer in such a context and is clearly meant to protect the young generation, so it is deplorable to find beer companies selling at such events,” said the Minster of Trade.

Regional representative councillor (DPD), Arya Wedakarna -also present, added that retailers in the 16 tourist areas, who will continue to be allowed to sell alcohol, will receive guidance and training related to the new regulation.

In essence, retailers will be reminded that alcohol must only be sold to tourists and that it is strictly prohibited to sell to those under 21 years old. “The Regional representative council will propose a clause requesting special guidance for those selling in the 16 designated tourist area. We will continue to coordinate with the Minister who will be issuing technical guidelines on April 16th. We have also sent a letter to the Bali Police and other agencies so as to prevent something bad from happening,” he said. (kmb35)

Early childhood education can prevent radicalism DENPASAR - Early childhood education is a branch of education that can help to prevent the spread of radicalism, Social Affairs Minister Khofifah Indar Parawansa said.

“Through early childhood education, they can learn about tolerance. It (the ideology) should be implanted in them from an early age,” Parawansa stated on Saturday.

“From an early age, they can develop an understanding of cultural diversity and pluralism, and through these efforts, tolerance and moderation can be ingrained in them,” the minister affirmed.

Parawansa hopes that teachers of early childhood education can help to prevent radicalism.

She added that efforts to prevent radicalism should not be carried out in schools alone but in the community as well.

Earlier, an Islamic organization in Indonesia had urged the government to block threatening websites that have yet to be detected by a panel recently set up for the purpose.

“We can see several websites that are dangerous and have the potential to spread radicalism, such as the ideology of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), but they have yet to be blocked. They must be blocked immediately,” Deputy General Chairman of the Executive Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) Asad Said Ali said here on Friday.

He made the request during a discussion on the “Effectiveness of Blocking Radical Websites in the Fight against Terrorism” in the campus of Bhayangkara Jaya Raya University in Jalan Dharmawangsa, South Jakarta.

The websites that the PBNU wants blocked because they carry negative content are Milaibrahim, Ansyarudaullah, ansaruttauhid, jihadologi, azzam blog, sautusallam, and Al-busro.

“They carry radical content and even give lessons on how to make bombs; this indicates that they are closely linked with the ISIS, but have been ignored,” he pointed out.

Ali further noted that the PBNU supported and appreciated the National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT) and the Ministry of Informatics and Communication for blocking 19 websites that were believed to be spreading radicalism.

“I hail the blocking of the 19 websites. It was a good move. More firm actions must be taken, and with regard to protests by operators of 12 of the 19 websites, it is okay as remedial steps can be taken, such as in the case of Dakwatuna.com belonging to the Prosperous Justice Party,” he stressed.

Moreover, Ali observed that several websites that supported the ISIS have addresses and clear operators.

So the BNPT and the Ministry of In-

formatics and Communication must take firm actions against them.

“I believe that operators and content of a website are both criteria to block a website. If, for example, the content of a website belonging to the PBNU helps the ISIS, then PBNU must be reprimanded. However, if the ownership is affiliated to the ISIS, then the website must be blocked straightaway,” he explained.

Ali also pointed out that the ideology of the ISIS was a threat to not only Indonesia but to the world at large.

He emphasized that the group’s ideology was not Islamic because it propagated hatred against other human beings, even Muslims belonging to different sects.

In addition, the government has lifted restrictions from 12 of the 19 Islamic websites that were blocked recently for allegedly promoting radicalism.

After the Forum for Handling Websites carrying Negative Content (FPSIBN) held a meeting on terrorism, SARA (ethnicity, religious, racial and group), and hate issues here on Thursday, the deputy chairman of the forum, Agus Barnas, announced that the operation of the 12 websites will be normalized, but they will continue to be monitored.

“We are restoring only 12 of the 19 blocked websites because only their operators communicated with the forum, which showed their goodwill.

This is besides a dialog that was held with them regarding the importance of maintaining the integrity of the Unitary State of Indonesia,” he remarked. (ant)

Jokowi greeted by rejection of reclamation in Bali

DENPASAR - President Joko Widodo while attending the Fourth PDI-P Congress got ‘a surprise’ from the residents of Sanur on Thursday (Apr. 9). As president Jokowi made his way to the congress, he drove passed local youths who lined Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai holding banners that read: “Cancel Presidential Regulation No.51/2014.”

These youth were not alone in conducting such actions. Members of the Sanur Fishermen Group also took action at sea. At least 30 people set sail on 15 boats and sailed around the Grand Bali Beach Hotel. However, only a few boats managed to pass in front of the hotel because police prevented them from doing so. Gusde, Coordinator of the boat action, was even detained on the beach for interrogation, although he was eventually released.

“Let Jokowi know that we want to remind him that the PDI-P said that they would reject the regulation for the seek of the people, so why should we be stopped from demonstrating in our boats?” said Gusde regarding the demonstration of the rejection of the reclamation plan. The protesters also expressed their disagreement with the Chairman of the PDI-P Bali, I Wayan Koster, who said that he would not discuss the matter of the Benoa Bay reclamation project in the congress.

“He was elected by the people, so he should be pro-people and do what people demand. If he does neglects to do so, it is just like a peanut forgetting its skin. If he forgets his promises once he has the position, something bad

could be triggered. Actually we do not want to mention anyone, whether Koster or others,” he said.

Gusde added that he does not agree with the reclamation plan because it is filled with personal interests and does not favor the interests of the wider community.

Aside from protests around the congress itself, the rejection of the Benoa Bay reclamation plan was also expressed by the people of Indonesia in Washington DC who also urge President Joko Widodo to revoke Presidential Regulation No.51/2014 that would allow for such a project.

“From our perspective, this reclamation plan is just a gimmick used to control the land which has a very high economic value,” said the representative of the Indonesian community in Washington DC, Made Supriatma.

The Indonesians in Washington held a peaceful demonstration outside the United States Congress, Capitol Hill, on April 11.

Residents join “sapuh leger” ritual en masse

BANGLI - The high costs incurred

by Hindu’s who perform pabayuhan (exorcism rituals) especially the sapuh leger ritual has given rise to exorcism rituals done en-masse. On Tuesday April 11, dozens of residents at Kayubihi Bangli, ranging from young children to the elderly, participated in such a ritual.

Chief of Kayubihi customary village, I Wayan Sadia, explained that the sapuh leger exorcism ritual was attended by 27 people who were born on wuku (one of the Balinese seven-day weeks) Wayang. The ritual

is down so as to avoid negative influences although the exorcism ritual is only done once in a lifetime. Without performing such a ritual, it is believed that children born on wuku Wayang will be subject to disaster.

Sadia went on to say that the sapuh leger ritual done en-masse is one way of alleviating the burden of the expensive ritual for local people, especially for those in the middle and lower economic classes that cannot necessarily afford the manusa yajña ceremony.

He also explained that the ritual

must be held, so members of the Hindu community have found a solution by performing the ritual together as a village. “Mass rituals are cheaper so each person can spend less,” he explained.

Sadia disclosed that such group rituals also aim to improve the kinship between residents and foster the tradition of mutual assistance, because everyone is involved in the preparation of the ceremony. “Other than for purpose of the ritual itself, it can also increase the sense of brotherhood,” he said.

One of the residents participating in the ritual, I Nengah Santika, said that he was greatly assisted by the mass ritual. Over the years he has not been able to perform it independently due to financial problems. According to him, it can cost up to IDR 30 million.

The mass ritual only costs IDR 1 million per person. “If we organize a sapuh leger independently, it can cost tens of millions, while en masse the cost is more affordable,” he said.

He also added that if the ritual is carried out independently, apart from the oblations, one also has to pay for

other expenses such as food, beverages and renting tents.

The one-day event began with the performance of a shadow puppet play performed by puppeteer Jro Dalang Sudirma which was followed by the sprinkling of holy water at the family shrines of participants. Then the exorcism rite is conducted using holy water and the puppets are carried out in front of the puppet performance. Participants also step on a bundle of Balinese rice. The procession is continued with pabayuh oton, majaya-jaya and ends with the saying of prayers. (kmb45)

Geria Telabah Denpasar is grieving. Ida Ayu Alit Kerti is the mother of the Bali tourism figure, Ida Bagus Surakusuma, has passed away. This patient woman died of illness at the age of 93 years old. She was treated at the pavilion of Wangaya Hospital Denpasar and passed away on Sunday (Apr. 5) at four o’clock in the afternoon.

The late Ida Ayu Alit Kerti is known as the mother becoming a role model. She completed her education at the Hollandsch-Inlandsche School (HIS) and during her lifetime she very faithfully followed her late husband. Ida Bagus Jaya Kusuma once served as the Head of Public Works Agency in Jakarta, Tangerang and Irian Jaya.

He then returned home to Bali with her husband after retirement.

Ida Bagus Surakusuma is familiarly called I.B. Lolec as coordinator of the ceremony expressed the cremation activity will be held at Griya Telabah, precisely at Jalan Thamrin I / 10 Denpasar. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Timberlake, 34, was “ecstatic,” People magazine said, adding that mother and baby were doing well.

Argentina requests Interpol notice for Bieber’s arrest

BUENOS AIRES - An Argentine judge has asked Interpol to issue a Red Notice for the arrest of pop star Justin Bieber over the alleged assault of a photographer outside a nightclub in 2013, his staff said Friday.

Bieber ignored a November court order to appear before the judge in the case, which dates to a stop in Buenos Aires on the Canadian heartthrob’s Believe tour.

“We are asking Interpol for Justin Bieber’s detention, anywhere in the world.

Since he could not be found for his appearance to testify, we request that he be detained,” Judge Alberto Banos’s secretary told AFP. She said the request had been made on April 8, after Bieber failed to turn up in court within 60 days of his summons.

Interpol, the international police body, does not issue arrest warrants itself, but can send out a Red Notice informing its 190 member states that a suspect is wanted in a particular country.

According to the complaint, a bodyguard, following Bieber’s orders, forcefully seized photographer Diego Pesoa’s camera and cellphone outside a nightclub in the upscale Palermo neighborhood in November 2013.

The 21-year-old megastar, who once enjoyed a squeaky clean image, has more recently had frequent run-ins with the law, including one in Canada in which he allegedly assaulted a limousine driver.

Last year, he pleaded guilty to lesser charges after taking part in an illegal drag race on a Miami street.

He was also sentenced to two years’ probation last year for throwing eggs at the home of a neighbor in California.

The 2013 tour stop, Bieber’s only visit to Argentina, was peppered with scandals.

He was also thrown out of a hotel, and cut one show short after 45 minutes because of a stomach ache, angering some fans. (afp)

NEW YORK — Taylor Swift revealed to her fans that her mother has cancer. Swift wrote about the news in a post on her Tumblr on Thursday, which her representative confirmed. Swift said she wants to keep the details private, but said her mother wanted her fans to know what was going on.

The 25-year-old singer said she asked her mother to see her doctors as a Christmas gift.

She said “there were no red flags,” but they later learned Andrea Swift had cancer.

Guest visit declines after rate increase of dolphin tour

SINGARAJA - Lately, the fuel price hike is suspected to have a significant impact on the increase in the dolphin guiding rates and so is the lack of tourists coming to watch dolphin attraction. Lovina Beach area is famous for its dolphin icon as a tourist attraction in Buleleng. The increase in visitor becomes the hope of fishermen working as a tour guide in order to increase their daily income.

Reducing tourist visit in the middle of the year is inversely proportional to entering high season. The activity of fishermen to escort guest decreases from typically three times a day to only once a day. Unpredictable condition often makes fishermen idle and tends to repair their equipment to catch fish. “Our guiding activities this year begin to decline as entering mid-year like in April every year is always deserted. The increase will begin to be visible from June to August.

Now, I am able to escort guests once a day,” said a fisherman doubling as tour guide of dolphin tour, Made Bagi, 40, from Kalibukbuk village, Lovina, Singaraja.

Adverse weather condition often makes fishermen scream. They tend to reduce their fishing activities and escorting guests. Occasionally when guests would like to watch dolphins, the cost per person is forced to be

raised in order to cover the operating cost due to fuel price hike several weeks ago.

“The current rate is IDR 100,000 per person from IDR 60,000 per person. We just object when the fuel price goes up. Although we can escort guests, we have trouble in the cost of purchasing gasoline at high enough price,” he added.

Made Bagi does not want to

make his guests disappointed and he has a special trick to get around the fuel price hike. Although the rate increases, the tradition of bargaining price in the field cannot be denied. So, he begins to set the mileage in order to be able to enjoy the dolphin attraction at sea. “We get around the mileage of dolphin tour from typically 50 kilometers to about 20 kilometer. Obviously it affects the catch and reduction of income,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Group Head of Cipta Karya Bakti Samudra at Kalibukbuk, Singaraja, Kadek Budiasa, explained that the group has 25 members. The decline in tourist visit is alleged to happen because

it has not entered holiday season.

His party only objects to the policy when the fuel price goes up and he is forced to reduce the mileage at sea. “Now, I often go to sea at night, and only using light and generator set.
