New R. Kelly sex abuse tape discovered: lawyer

NEW YORK - One of the lawyers representing women who claim they were abused by R&B star R. Kelly said Sunday a new video tape had emerged which showed the singer “sexually abusing children.” Kelly is currently on bail after being accused of sexually abusing four women, including three teenagers, between May 1998 and January 2010. The latest discovery was announced by lawyer Gloria Allred at a press conference where she told journalists it was found by couple Gary and Sallie Dennis in a box of old VHS cassettes at their home. Neither Allred nor Dennis elaborated on how the tape came to be in the couple’s possession. “Prior to learning that such a tape was in their possession, Sallie had viewed the Lifetime documentary called ‘Surviving R. Kelly,’” said Allred. “She was emotionally very disturbed by what the women in the documentary alleged had happened. “Sometime after that, Sallie and her husband discovered to their surprise that they had a VHS tape that could be helpful in learning what had happened to these young girls who had come into contact with R. Kelly.” Allred said that while she had not viewed a previous tape that had been widely reported in the media, she did not believe it was of the same act.

She said it showed “what appeared to be R. Kelly sexually abusing children” but declined to go into further detail. But she urged others who possess such tapes but may be reluctant to admit that they have them to come forward to her or to law enforcement. Gary Dennis said he had made the discovery while going through old sports tapes and trying to decide which ones to keep and which to throw out. “He was telling them what to do and what to say, and it appeared that he was controlling the camera,” said Denis. Dennis said that as a father to two daughters himself, he reacted in horror and his first instinct was to throw the tape out, but after discussing the matter with his wife contacted Allred. The tape is the third to purportedly show Kelly engaging in such acts. The first two have been reported by Michael Avenatti, a lawyer representing other women involved in the case. Multiple women have come forward since the airing of the six-part documentary in January to say the 52-year-old singer had sexual relations with girls under the age of 16 and kept sex slaves. The details of the current criminal case echo previous accusations of sexual misconduct that have dogged the artist for the last two decades. (afp)

LOS ANGELES - “Captain Marvel,” the first Marvel Studios/Disney superhero film with a female lead, has soared to rare heights in North American theaters, with whopping weekend ticket sales of $153 million, industry watcher Exhibitor Relations reported. Added to the $302 million taken in internationally, the film’s estimated total of $455 million for the three-day weekend would give it the sixth highest global debut ever, according to Variety, and the best domestic start for a superhero film since Disney and Marvel’s “Black Panther” opened last year with $202 million. The film stars Brie Larson, winner of a 2016 Best Actress Oscar for “Room,” as Carol Danvers, a former fighter pilot who gains superhuman powers in a fluke accident and finds herself in the middle of a galactic conflict. Also starring are Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Djimon Hounsou, Annette Bening and Jude Law. The film, which opened on International Women’s Day, was co-directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. Trailing light-years behind in second place, at $14.7 million, was Universal’s “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World,” which had topped the North American box office for two straight weekends. The final installment in the “Dragon” trilogy, voiced by Jay Baruchel, America Ferrera, Cate Blanchett and F. Murray Abraham, tells the story of young Hiccup and his dragon Toothless on their quest to find a reputed dragon utopia. In third, down one spot, was Lionsgate’s “A Madea Family Funeral” from actor/director Tyler Perry. The latest comic chapter about the irreverent but caring elderly title character (played by

Perry) earned $12.1 million. Fourth spot went to Warner Bros.’ “The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part,” at $3.8 million. Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks and Will Arnett voice the

animated toys in a story of love and apocalypse in a plastic universe. And in fifth was Fox’s “Alita: Battle Angel” at $3.2 million. The sci-fi fantasy stars Rosa Salazar as a nearly human cyborg who has lost her memory. (afp)

Planes grounded after deadly Ethiopia crash

Safety doubts over Boeing’s best-selling 737 MAX 8 drove several carriers to ground the aircraft Monday after a new jet crashed in Ethiopia, killing all 157 people on board. Investigators recovered the black-box flight recorders from the Nairobi-bound jet that went down early Sunday near Addis Ababa, the carrier Ethiopia Airlines said.

Flight ET302 crashed into a field just six minutes after takeoff as the pilot alerted controllers of “difficulties”. There were people from 35 countries on board, including some two dozen UN staff. Ethiopia decreed Monday a day of national mourning. The aircraft was the same type of jet as the Indonesian Lion Air plane that crashed in October, killing 189 passengers and crew. Airlines in Ethiopia, China, South Africa, Indonesia and the Cayman Islands said Monday they were suspending operations by their 737

MAX 8 fleets. The move caused Boeing shares to tumble around 12 percent earlier in the day, before recovering about half its losses in mid-afternoon New York trading. - Jets grounded Ethiopia Airlines said investigators had found the plane’s flight data and cockpit voice recorders on Monday. It said it had grounded its fleet of six remaining Boeing 737 MAX 8 planes pending analysis of the black box data. “We assume

we will find out the cause of the crash in the black box data,” the airline said. China also ordered domestic airlines to suspend commercial operation of the MAX 8. There were eight Chinese nationals among the 149 passengers and eight crew on the Ethiopia flight. Indonesia, which has 11 of the MAX 8 model planes, said it would “carry out inspections and temporarily prohibit Boeing 737 Max 8 from flying.” South Korea ordered an inspection of two MAX 8 planes flown by

low-cost Eastar Jet. Some other airlines said they were not cancelling MAX 8 flights, including Oman Air, flydubai, Turkish Airlines and Russia’s S7. Boeing has described the MAX series as its fastest-selling aeroplane ever, with more than 5,000 orders placed to date from about 100 customers. State-owned Ethiopian Airlines, Africa’s largest carrier, had ordered 30 MAX 8 jets in total, and China has received 76 from an order of 180. The plane that crashed on Sunday was less than four months old. Ethiopian Airlines said it was delivered on November 15. - Plane on fire The jet went down near the

village of Tulu Fara, some 60 kilometres (40 miles) east of Addis Ababa. “The plane was already on fire when it crashed to the ground. The crash caused a big explosion,” one witness, Tegegn Dechasa, told AFP. Another, farmer Sisay Gemechu, said the plane seemed to be aiming to land on an open field, but crashed before reaching it.
