New R. Kelly sex abuse tape discovered: lawyer

NEW YORK - One of the lawyers representing women who claim they were abused by R&B star R. Kelly said Sunday a new video tape had emerged which showed the singer “sexually abusing children.” Kelly is currently on bail after being accused of sexually abusing four women, including three teenagers, between May 1998 and January 2010. The latest discovery was announced by lawyer Gloria Allred at a press conference where she told journalists it was found by couple Gary and Sallie Dennis in a box of old VHS cassettes at their home. Neither Allred nor Dennis elaborated on how the tape came to be in the couple’s possession. “Prior to learning that such a tape was in their possession, Sallie had viewed the Lifetime documentary called ‘Surviving R. Kelly,’” said Allred. “She was emotionally very disturbed by what the women in the documentary alleged had happened. “Sometime after that, Sallie and her husband discovered to their surprise that they had a VHS tape that could be helpful in learning what had happened to these young girls who had come into contact with R. Kelly.” Allred said that while she had not viewed a previous tape that had been widely reported in the media, she did not believe it was of the same act.

She said it showed “what appeared to be R. Kelly sexually abusing children” but declined to go into further detail. But she urged others who possess such tapes but may be reluctant to admit that they have them to come forward to her or to law enforcement. Gary Dennis said he had made the discovery while going through old sports tapes and trying to decide which ones to keep and which to throw out. “He was telling them what to do and what to say, and it appeared that he was controlling the camera,” said Denis. Dennis said that as a father to two daughters himself, he reacted in horror and his first instinct was to throw the tape out, but after discussing the matter with his wife contacted Allred. The tape is the third to purportedly show Kelly engaging in such acts. The first two have been reported by Michael Avenatti, a lawyer representing other women involved in the case. Multiple women have come forward since the airing of the six-part documentary in January to say the 52-year-old singer had sexual relations with girls under the age of 16 and kept sex slaves. The details of the current criminal case echo previous accusations of sexual misconduct that have dogged the artist for the last two decades. (afp)

LOS ANGELES - “Captain Marvel,” the first Marvel Studios/Disney superhero film with a female lead, has soared to rare heights in North American theaters, with whopping weekend ticket sales of $153 million, industry watcher Exhibitor Relations reported. Added to the $302 million taken in internationally, the film’s estimated total of $455 million for the three-day weekend would give it the sixth highest global debut ever, according to Variety, and the best domestic start for a superhero film since Disney and Marvel’s “Black Panther” opened last year with $202 million. The film stars Brie Larson, winner of a 2016 Best Actress Oscar for “Room,” as Carol Danvers, a former fighter pilot who gains superhuman powers in a fluke accident and finds herself in the middle of a galactic conflict. Also starring are Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Djimon Hounsou, Annette Bening and Jude Law. The film, which opened on International Women’s Day, was co-directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. Trailing light-years behind in second place, at $14.7 million, was Universal’s “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World,” which had topped the North American box office for two straight weekends. The final installment in the “Dragon” trilogy, voiced by Jay Baruchel, America Ferrera, Cate Blanchett and F. Murray Abraham, tells the story of young Hiccup and his dragon Toothless on their quest to find a reputed dragon utopia. Guitar carving artist goes international

GIANYAR — The artist figure, I Wayan Tuges, is able to conjure up an ordinary guitar into a high-valued musical instrument. It is done by increasing the size of the guitar’s body. The work created by an artist from Guwang village, Sukawati, has also gone international and been collected by many famous musicians. on Monday (Mar. 11). The success of Wayan Tuges pioneering his career as a carver does not happen instantly. He proceeded since a dozen years ago. He even learned to make guitar for two years at someone from the United States.

“I learned to make guitar from 2005. I was specifically given a guitar by my friend named Danny Fonfeder to be filled with Balinese carvings,” he said. At that time, he admitted not to be unable to directly complete the guitar carving order. Then around 2007, he met with a guitarist from the United States. From this artist, Wayan Tuges received diligent guidance for two years. “I’ve learned from him for two years,” he admitted. According to Wayan Tuges, as long as wishing to study, there is nothing impossible to do. Based on that belief, he did not stop exploring to create novelty on his guitar products labeled as Blueberry Guitar. So far, he has produced thousands of guitars sold to various countries. However, his works are less acknowledged at home. “Indeed, my works are mostly purchased by foreigners, while local artists are rare,” he complained. Wayan Tuges admitted that he regretted this condition, whereas he really hoped his work can be used by local artists. “I want domestic musicians to use my works,” he said. He mentioned that a series of musicians have used his guitars. Among them, there are jazz musicians like Paul Deslaurier, Golden Earing Band, and George Kooymanns. Blueberry Guitar was also exhibited in various countries, such as in Canada at the Montreal Jazz Festival. Ninety percent of his products use raw materials from within the country. His guitar is indeed filled with carvings that make it look different from other guitars. However, he also receives the order of making customized guitar. “Indeed, the hallmark is Balinese carvings, but if anyone wishing to order with different models, we are more than happy to serve,” said Wayan Tuges. To minimize pollution in the lake, govt builds WWTP at Kedisan

BANGLI — The discourse of government to deal with various problems hitting Lake Batur began to be realized this year. Chairperson of the Lake Batur Management Working Group who is also the Regional Secretary of Bangli government, Ida Bagus Giri Putra, said that as a first step in the efforts to save Lake Batur, the government will build a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in a village on the outskirts of Lake Batur this year. Besides, this year the government will also conduct a study on the making of lake’s border. Giri Putra stated last Sunday (Mar. 10) the construction of the WWTP at Kedisan village area is carried out by central government. The WWTP construction is meant to reduce the level of pollution in Lake Batur resulting from household and restaurant waste. Through the WWTP, the waste produced will be processed first so that it does not directly contaminate the lake. “The WWTP built in Kedisan is demonstration plot. Later on, other villages will also be built such WWTP by degrees as the construction cannot be done all at once,” he explained.

This year, he said the government through the Bali River Area Agency (BWS) will conduct a study on the construction of lake borders, for further certification of Lake Batur. Giri Putra revealed that at present the lake border is not clear. As a result of the overflowing water of Lake Batur, many of the lands owned by local residents on the edge of the lake become submerged. “The lake area has now changed due to overflow of the lake. Many land areas are now part of the lake,” he explained. On that account, in determining the lake border, further discussion needs to be done with the community and related components. He further added that in an effort to reduce lake damage, the government this year also increased community empowerment. The communities, especially farmers in the Lake Batur region, are directed to implement integrated organic-based agriculture. Besides, the government also cleans up plastic waste by involving community components. Thus, when there is a flood in the upstream, no garbage is carried away to the lake. (kmb40)

N. Korea ‘missile launch’ plans under scrutiny as concern mounts

SEOUL - South Korea’s military said Monday it was closely monitoring North Korean facilities after a series of satellite images triggered international alarm that Pyongyang might be preparing a long-range missile or space launch.

Any launch would send the stuttering talks on denuclearisation into disarray, after a high-stakes second summit between Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un collapsed last month without a deal. But some analysts suggest the North might be stage-managing activity at certain key sites, to stoke concern and secure “better terms” when the two sides next meet. Washington wants what administration officials have called a “big deal”, with the complete elimination of weapons of mass destruction in return for the dropping of sanctions that have strangled the isolated North’s economy. North Korea favours a more step-byapproach, with Kim proposing dismantling its Yongbyon nuclear complex in exchange for lifting the main sanctions -- a notion Trump refused in Hanoi despite the vaunted “chemistry” between the pair. “The North could be trying to show the US it can always turn back to aggressive posture by rebuilding missile sites in order to gain leverage in future talks, but without actually firing a missile or rocket,” said Cheong Seong-Chang, a senior researcher at the private Sejong Institute. “It is hard to rule out the possibility of a rocket launch at the Sohae station at this point as North Korea has proven time and time again it can do unexpected things.” - ‘All possible scenarios’ -

Satellite analysis now indicates increased activity at two key sites -- the Samundong missile research facility and the Sohae rocket launch centre.

Located on the outskirts of Pyongyang, Samundong was built in 2012 to support development of long-range missiles and space-launch vehicles. As well as developing the Hawsong-15 ICBM, which analysts agree is capable of reaching the whole US mainland, Samundong constructed the long-range rockets that were then transported and successfully launched from the Sohae satellite launch station in 2012 and 2016. Images of Samundong taken on February 22 showed cars and trucks at the site, as well as rail cars and cranes at a yard, US news outlet NPR has reported. South Korea is “closely tracking and looking into all activity for possible scenarios including a missile launch” across the border, said Kim Joon-rak, spokesman of the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff. Experts are divided over Pyongyang’s plans, but whatever its intentions, a launch would shatter the fragile US-North Korea relationship and revive the angry language that had stoked fears of a military conflict at the start of the Trump presidency. “This is North Korea’s classic brinkmanship on display again,” said Lim Eul-chul, professor of North Korean studies at Kyungnam University. “The North’s intention is clear. It wants early resumption of talks with the US, but on better terms.” Veteran North Korea watchers said that any activity is likely to be finely calibrated and could also be intended to send a clear message within the isolated regime. “Kim could use a launch to demonstrate at the 14th Supreme People’s Assembly, probably in mid-April, that he has not been cowed by sanctions,” said former US negotiator Joel Wit, now

The Norwegian news agency NTB automated sports reports to get match results delivered within 30 seconds. The Los Angeles Times developed a “quakebot” that quickly distributes news articles on temblors in the region and also uses an automated system as part of its Homicide Report. The Associated Press has been automating quarterly earnings reports for some 3,000 listed companies, allowing the news agency to expand from what had been just a few hundred, and this year announced plans with its partner Automated Insights to deliver computer-generated previews of college basketball games. However, he said that if the North went ahead, the US would be “forced to react” whether it turned out to be a missile test or a satellite launch. North Korea has been banned by the UN Security Council from carrying out space launches, as some of its technology was similar to that used for intercontinental ballistic missiles, or ICBMs. John Bolton, President Donald Trump’s hawkish national security adviser, said Sunday the US sees “exactly what they are doing” in regard to possible launch moves by the nucleararmed state. “We see it unblinkingly, and we don’t have any illusions about what those are,” he warned, adding his boss would be “pretty disappointed” if a nuclear-armed state conducted a new missile test. Robo-journalism gains traction in shifting media landscape

WASHINGTON - A text-generating “bot” nicknamed Tobi produced nearly 40,000 news stories about the results of the November 2018 elections in Switzerland for the media giant Tamedia -- in just five minutes. These kinds of artificial intelligence programs -- available for nearly a decade -- are becoming more widespread as news organizations turn to them to produce stories, personalize news delivery and in some cases sift through data to find important news. Tobi wrote on vote results for each of Switzerland’s 2,222 municipalities, in both French and German, for the country’s largest media group, according to a paper presented last month at the Computation + Journalism conference in Miami. A similar automated program called Heliograf has enabled The Washington Post daily to cover some 500 election races, along with local sports and business, since 2014. “We’ve seen a greater acceptance of the potential for artificial intelligence, or robo-journalism, in newsrooms around the world,” said

While news professionals acknowledge the limits of computer programs, they also note that automated systems can sometimes accomplish

things humans can’t. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution used a data journalism team to uncover 450 cases of doctors who were brought before medical regulators or courts for sexual misconduct, finding that nearly half remained licensed to practice medicine. The newspaper used machine learning, an artificial intelligence tool, to analyze each case and assign a “probability rating” on sexual misconduct, which was then reviewed by a team of journalists. Studies appear to indicate consumers accept computer-generated stories, which are mostly labeled as such. A report prepared by researcher Andreas Graefe for Columbia University’s Tow Center said one study of Dutch readers found that the label of computer-generated “had no effect on people’s perceptions of quality.” A second study of German readers, Graefe said, found that “automated articles were rated as more credible,” although human-written news scored higher for “readability.” (afp)

Heron population at Peh Landfill increases

PEH Landfill located at Kaliakah village, Negara subdistrict, has begun to change within the past year. Different scenery is seen not only in the landfill area, but also from the entry from Denpasar-Gilimanuk road section. On the way to the location, a smooth paved road of about 1.5 kilometers is passed with typical rural scenery. At the surroundings, visitors are served with natural view of paddy fields and mountain, including animals commonly encountered in paddy fields such as white heron, starling or storks. Since the past two months, the bird population commonly living in paddy fields has been increasing. They are foraging in the garbage piles. From only five heads, now they have increased to dozens of heads. “They eat fly along with its larvae. For us, they are very helpful as can reduce the impact of flies,” added another officer. In harmony with the increasing number of their population, they are worried if they will be disrupted by mischievous people. Not infrequently, some people make the heron a target for their hunting by using air rifles. Actually, the birds are very helpful like what they have done at the largest landfill in Jembrana. “We protect them in this landfill area. But I don’t know when they are outside because this bird does not live here. But every morning, these flocks of heron throng this location,” said Dikok. As resident living around the Peh Landfill, he has also proposed to make a perarem or appendix to customary village bylaw for the protection of the bird species. By that way, their habitat is well maintained, even if possible increases. NAIROBI - Extracting and processing materials, fuel and food contributes as much as half of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions, the UN said Tuesday, as experts gathered in Kenya to find ways to rein in exploding global consumption. Using dozens of data sources, the authors of a major new report presented lawmakers and businesses with a stark choice: drastically reform the global economy to get more from less, or risk the collapse of global infrastructure. With countries already committed under the Paris climate deal to curb emissions to fend off the worst impacts of global warming, experts said there was little hope of meeting that goal without an “urgent and systemic transformation” in how we use Earth’s resources. The Global Resources Outlook 2019 said that worldwide consumption of basic commodities such as water, minerals and fossil fuels had tripled since 1970. With high-population nations such as China and India rapidly expanding their economies, the team behind the report called for a drastic overhaul in how that growth is fed. “Nobody is claiming that the countries which are on the lower level of development should not have the right to develop,” said Janez Potocnik, co-chair of the International Resource Panel. “The question is, is it possible to do it differently to how we have done it, with fewer consequences than we see today?” The report paints a grim picture of relentless demand for resources as the global population ticks towards eight billion people. Between 40 and 80 percent of those excess deaths are caused by heart attacks, strokes and other types of cardiovascular disease underestimated up to now as a driver of smogrelated mortality, researchers reported. On average, a toxic cocktail of pollutants from vehicles, industry and agriculture shortens the lives of those who die prematurely by 2.2 years, they calculated. “This means that air pollution causes more extra deaths a year than tobacco smoking, which the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates was responsible for an extra 7.2 million deaths in 2015,” said senior author Thomas Munzel, a professor at the University Medical Centre Mainz in Germany. “Smoking is avoidable, but air pollution is not.”

Indonesia says grounding Boeing 737 MAX fleet after Ethiopia crash

Indonesia said Monday it was grounding its Boeing 737 MAX 8 jets after the Ethiopian Airlines crash and another deadly accident involving the same model near Jakarta in October. “The Director General of Air Transport will take steps to carry out inspections and temporarily prohibit Boeing 737 Max 8 from flying in Indonesia,” Director General of Air Transport Polana Pramesti told reporters in Jakarta.

The inspections on Indonesia’s 11 Max 8 jets would start Tuesday and the plane would remain grounded until it was cleared by safety regulators, she added. On Sunday, 157 passengers and crew members of a 737 MAX operated by Ethiopian Airlines were killed shortly after the Nairobi-bound flight took off from Addis Ababa. The plane is the same type as the Indonesian Lion Air jet that crashed in October, just minutes after takeoff from Jakarta, killing all 189 people on board.

Ten of Indonesia’s Max 8 jets are operated by Lion Air while the other is flown by national carrier Garuda. The decision from Indonesia’s transport ministry came as China also ordered its airlines to suspend commercial operations of the state-of-the-art model earlier Monday. Noting the “similarities” between the two accidents, China’s Civil Aviation Administration said domestic airlines had until Monday evening to ground all 737 MAX 8 aircraft. (afp)

Reeling from the news, Siti Aisyah’s aunt geared up for a party to welcome back her 27-year-old niece, a year and a half after she went on trial in neighbouring Malaysia with the death penalty hanging over her head. “Thank God. I want to say a

thousand ‘thank you’s’ if it’s really true that she has been freed,” Aisyah’s aunt Darmi, who goes by one name, told AFP. “They should bring her here straight away because she’s not guilty. We’ve heard the news and we’re so happy. We’re getting a celebration ready! “Thanks to everyone who took care of my niece.” Aisyah’s parents were in the capital Jakarta Monday to await their daughter’s return, after a flurry of diplomatic efforts between the two Southeast Asian neighbours.

LOS ANGELES - Russell Westbrook threatened a female fan and her male companion when the Oklahoma City Thunder player got into another heated exchange with Utah spectators during an NBA game on Monday. The confrontation between Westbrook and the Jazz fans was caught on video and posted to social media. “I swear to God. I will fuck you up, you and your wife. I will fuck you up,” Westbrook said. It was unclear from the video what the Jazz hecklers said to initiate the profanity-laced response from Westbrook but the player said he heard a racial slur. Westbrook was not penalized by the game officials in the Thunder’s 98-89 victory in front of a crowd of 18,300 at Vivint Smart Home Arena. Westbrook finished with a near triple double, 23 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists. Westbrook issued a statement after the game to reporters but declined to answer questions. “The young man and his wife in the stands told me to get down on my knees like you used to,” Westbrook said. “And for me that is completely disrespectful. I think it is racial. It is inappropriate. “There are people that come to the games to say mean disrespect-

ful things about me and my family. For many years I have done all the right things and never done anything to hurt or harm anybody. Never been in any trouble. Two-hundred and eighty three days after resigning, Zinedine Zidane is back as coach of Real Madrid. Sitting alongside a shell-shocked Florentino Perez in May last year, Zidane said Madrid would have problems if he stayed. However, they’ve had problems without him too and now he has returned to fix them. Winner of three consecutive Champions League titles, Zidane’s exit seemed perfectly timed, even more so given what came next. Julen Lopetegui was fired after three months and Santiago Solari’s team self-combusted in six days, as defeats to Barcelona, twice, and Ajax rendered their season dead before the middle of March. Zidane and Jose Mourinho were touted as the preferred options, but most likely in the summer, when freshness and signings might launch a new era from a firmer footing. Instead, Zidane has been persuaded not only to return, but to do so immediately. He takes over a team with almost nothing to play for in La Liga, 12 points adrift of leaders Barcelona and 10 ahead of Alaves in fifth. Perhaps in this middle-ground, with pressure neither from above or below, Zidane sees an opportunity to begin the reform. Or perhaps, after nine months away, he was simply unable to resist. His reunion with the players will almost certainly do wonders for morale. Zidane was popular with almost all of them, save Gareth Bale, whose future at Real Madrid now appears in serious doubt.
