‘Boyhood’ wins big at Globes
LOS ANGELES - Coming-of-age drama “Boyhood” emerged triumphant Sunday at the Golden Globes, Hollywood’s biggest awards show before the all-important Oscars, as celebrities vowed solidarity with France after the Paris attacks.

Clooney wins DeMille Award at Globes
George Clooney accepted a lifetime achievement award from the Golden Globes Sunday by honoring others — his Hollywood colleagues, his new wife and millions who marched in the wake of attacks in France last week. The veteran actor who moved from “ER” into movies was given the Cecil B. DeMille Award, an honor that has gone to the likes of Walt Disney, Bob Hope, Alfred Hitchcock and, in recent years, to Jodie Foster, Morgan Freeman and Robert DeNiro. He was introduced by two former co-workers, Julianne Margulies and Don Cheadle. “You’ve always been very kind to me,” he said, addressing the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which has nominated Clooney in more Golden Globe categories than any person. “I thank you for keeping small films alive. Big ones do fine. It’s the little ones that need an audience.” The newlywed actor’s wife, Amal Alamuddin, watched from the audience. “It’s a humbling thing when you find someone to love,” Clooney said, looking out at her. “Even better when you’ve been waiting your whole life.” He recalled how actors who are nominated but don’t win awards can go home
feeling like losers and reminded those in the audience that they aren’t. “If you are in this room, you’ve caught the brass ring,” he said. “You’ve gotten to do what you’ve always dreamed of doing. That isn’t losing.” Clooney wore a “Je Suis Charlie” button on his tuxedo lapel in support of the French satirical magazine that was targeted by gunmen in France last week. He saluted the millions of people who honored the victims by marching in the street this weekend. “They didn’t march in protest,” Clooney said. “They marched in support of the idea that we will not walk in fear.” (ap)
The film won three Globes including the coveted best drama prize and best director honors for Richard Linklater at the starstudded ceremony at the Beverly Hilton hotel in Los Angeles. The pioneering movie -- made over 12 years with the same cast of actors portraying a child’s growth to adulthood -- also won a best supporting actress trophy for Patricia Arquette. “This was a very personal film for me ... and it means so much to us that people have seen it and responded to it in that personal way,” Linklater said. Dark comedy “Birdman” -- which had started the evening with the most nominations at seven -- and “The Theory of Everything,” about world-famous scientist Stephen Hawking, each took home two awards. The Globes give the winning films vital momentum just days before nominations are announced Thursday for next month’s Oscars, the climax of Tin-
seltown’s annual awards season. Voting for the Oscar nominations is over, but Globe winners can use their trophies to fuel their Academy Award campaigns. All three leading Globes winners -- “Boyhood,” “Birdman” and “The Theory of Everything” -- are relatively low budget films, confirming a trend among the frontrunners in this year’s awards race. “Birdman,” about a washed-up film actor trying to revive his career on stage, took best musical/comedy actor prize for Michael Keaton, and best screenplay for director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu. “The Theory of Everything,” the moving story of Hawking’s descent into disability as a young man, won best drama actor honors for Britain’s Eddie Redmayne, as well as best original score. The prize for best comedy/musical film went to “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” a stylish caper starring Ralph Fiennes, while Amy Adams won best actress in a musical/comedy for art fraud film “Big Eyes.” (afp)

Balinese should become subject on development DENPASAR - If Bali is analogized into a hook, then culture is the bait used to attract travelers to the Island of the Gods. On that account, the bait should be well maintained so that not all people will think of how to make an aquarium or make fish cage without ever keeping and paying attention to the bait, in this case the culture itself. It was revealed by Chairman of the Indonesia Hotels and Restaurants Association (PHRI) of Bali Chapter, Tjokorda Artha Ardana Sukawati, in the dialogue entitled “Mental Revolution from Bali to
Save Mother Earth” in the series of the K. Nadha Nugraha Press Award, Saturday (Jan 10). “Balinese people as the actor of Balinese culture are not only positioned as an object of the
tourism development but also as the subject of tourism development itself. Limitation existing in Balinese society, access to capital and access to knowledge are still relatively lacking in the era of globalization compared to the other countries. Therefore, this will stay to require government intervention and its participation in caring for, not only the humans, but also the nature including their belief,”
said the man familiarly called Cok Ace. Meanwhile, Executive Director of the Friends of the Earth Indonesia (WALHI) Abetnego Tarigan saw there was anxiety that Bali would go the same as Hawaii that relied on buildings and the aquarium. Then, there were so many imitations to be built. According to him, they were actually not natural. “Even, we do not have such
kind of objects because what we fear of the exploitative and imitative buildings is that Balinese people are simply referred to as a factor of production. It is more hazardous than more than just an object but only becomes a factor of production like labor, money and tools. They can only eat so that it simply moves in imitative development,” he said in the same dialogue. Continued on page 6
