Are Earthlings alone? Half of humans believe in alien life
AMSTERDAM - Nearly half of humans believe in alien life and want to make contact, a survey in 24 countries has found, in what researchers said helps to explain the lasting popularity of the “Star Wars” franchise 40 years after the first movie was screened.
On the eve of the release of “The Last Jedi”, researchers published findings that 47 percent of more than 26,000 respondents believe “in the existence of intelligent alien civilizations in the universe”. An even greater 61 percent said “yes” when asked if they believe in “some form of life on other planets”. Roughly a quarter said they do not believe intelligent life exists beyond Earth, researchers at Glocalities said. Among those who believe we are not alone in the universe, 60 percent said we should try to seek contact with alien civilizations, it found. It was not the first survey to collect views on extraterrestrial beings -- questionnaires in Germany, Britain and the United States have found similar rates -- but
researchers said this was the largest poll of its kind with such global reach. “The high score on the belief in the existence of intelligent alien civilizations and the distinct profile of these people partly explains the immense popularity of space movies such as Star Wars,” said research director Martijn Lampert. “People who believe in the existence of intelligent alien civilizations are not a marginal minority,” he said. The most believers in intelligent alien life were in Russia, at 68 percent, trailed closely by Mexico and China, with the down-to-earth Dutch bottoming out the list at 28 percent, the poll found. The interviews were conducted in 15 languages between December 2015 and February 2016 in countries representing 62 percent of the world’s population and 80 percent of the global economy. “The Last Jedi,” the eighth instalment of the blockbuster “Star Wars” series, debuts in theatres next week. LOS ANGELES - Brian Singer, the director of the film series “X-Men”, has been sued for allegedly sexually assaulting a 17year-old boy in 2003, according to a lawsuit filed in King County Superior Court in Washington state. Singer has denied the accusation. The lawsuit, filed on Thursday on behalf of a man named Cesar Sanchez-Guzman, said the alleged assault took place in the Seattle area at a party aboard a private yacht at which alcohol was served, according to court documents. In the lawsuit, Sanchez-Guzman alleged that Singer was a guest at the party and took him on a tour of the yacht and sexually assaulted him. The lawsuit charges Singer with sexual assault and battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress and sexual exploitation of children. Singer’s spokesman, Andrew Brettler, said the allegations were false, and this case would fail like another case brought against Singer in 2014 did. “Bryan categorically denies these allegations and will vehemently defend this lawsuit to the very end,” Brettler said in an email. Reuters was unable to independently confirm any of the allegations made in the lawsuit. The lawsuit asks for damages to be determined at a trial. The accusation against Singer is one of a number against prominent American men in politics, media and entertainment who have been accused in recent months of sexual harassment and misconduct. The lawsuit comes days after Singer, 52, was dropped as the director of 20th Century Fox film “Bohemian Rhapsody.” Entertainment trade publications including “Variety” and “The Hollywood Reporter”, citing unnamed sources, said Singer had clashed with the film’s lead actor and failed to turn up on the movie set. U.S. citizen on the run after busting out of Bali prison
DENPASAR - Indonesian police are hunting for a U.S. citizen who escaped on Monday from an overcrowded prison on the holiday island of Bali by cutting through steel bars in a ceiling, the jail’s second breakout of foreign inmates this year. The Kerobokan prison, about 10 km (six miles) from the main tourist beaches in the Kuta area, often holds foreigners facing drug-related charges. Cristian Beasley, who was a suspect in crimes related to narcotics but had not been sentenced, escaped at 4.10 a.m. (2010 GMT Sunday), said Badung Police chief Yudith Satria Hananta. “It is thought that the prisoner escaped ... by cutting through the steel bars above the ceiling,” he said in a
statement, without giving details of how Beasley escaped without being detected. Beasley, 32, from California, is believed to have then used a rope to climb down a wall before getting over a perimeter wall in an area being refurbished. Police had questioned witnesses and guards and were hunting for
Beasley, Hananta said. Another American, Paul Anthony Hoffman, 57, was captured while also trying to escape, Hananta said. Representatives of Beasley and Hoffman could not immediately be reached for comment. In June, an Australian, a Bulgarian, an Indian and a Malaysian tunnelled to freedom about 12 metres (13 yards) under the prison’s walls. The Indian and the Bulgarian were caught soon after in neighbouring East Timor, but Australian Shaun Edward Davidson and Malaysian Tee Kok King remain at large. Davidson has taunted authori-
ties by saying he was enjoying life in various parts of the world, in purported posts on Facebook. Kerobokan has housed a number of well-known foreign drug convicts, including Australian Schappelle Corby, whose 12-1/2-year sentence for marijuana smuggling got huge media attention. Indonesia has executed several foreign drug convicts in recent years. Indonesian prisons are often overcrowded, partly because a war on drugs led by the government of President Joko Widodo has led to a surge in the number of people locked up. As of June, Kerobokan housed
1,378 inmates, more than four times its planned capacity of 323, government data show. Prison escapes are fairly common in Indonesia, which launched an investigation this year after about 350 inmates broke out of a prison on the island of Sumatra. Tourist visit drop, Some group members of rowing boat switch job
BANGLI —The decrease in tourist arrivals to Kintamani due to the eruption of Mount Agung has forced some group members of rowing boats at Terunyan village to switch jobs. In addition to being a farm laborer at their village, some others also chose to be a merchant in Denpasar. The condition was recognized by Chief of Rowing Boat Group, Wayan Warjaya, on Sunday (Dec. 10).Warjaya revealed that tourist visit to Kintamani, especially to the Terunyan tourism village, has plummeted since the activities of Mount Agung increased two months ago. Moreover, since the last two weeks, there is absolutely no tourist visit. He mentioned that during high season, he usually had dozens of departures a day. “Here, there are two means of crossing transportation namely speed boat and rowing boats. During high season, a total of 50-60 boats are operated,” he explained. With the current quiet condition of tourist visit, Warjaya admitted the 156 members of rowing boat organization at Terunyan village are unable to do much. To meet daily needs, some members are forced to switch jobs. He mentioned that some of them are forced to switch job to farming laborer at their village. Besides, some other members try their luck by being sales or seller of knives and machetes in Denpasar. “Almost 50 percent or approximately 80 people of the group members still survive here,” he explained. He hoped the disaster of Mount Agung eruption in Karangasem can come to an end soon. So, tourism activity can get recovered. On that account, he and other residents whose livelihood relies on tourism at Terunyan village can pursue the activities again by offering rowing boat services. (kmb40)

FSP Bali hopes entrepreneurs not to do layoff
MANGUPURA —The eruption of Mount Agung with the impact on employee reduction, especially in the tourism sector, has become a serious concern of the Labor Union Federation (FSP) of Bali. The organization overshadowing the workers has cautioned the tourism entrepreneurs so as not to apply layoff due to the economic sluggishness. Chairman of FSPBali for Badung district, Wayan Suyasa, said entrepreneurs should wisely address to the condition so that workers do not become the layoff victims. Whatever the economic condition is, the workers having been working for years for the company must get attention and protection from the workplace. “We from Bali Labor Federation hope there will be no layoff with the current (weakening—Ed) condition of tourism,” said Wayan Suyasa after commemorating the twelfth anniversary of FSP Bali in Denpasar on Sunday (Dec. 10). According to him, the company should not casually lay off when the tourism condition drops because the workers have contributed in advancing the company for many years. “So, in our opinion, it will be less elegant if the company today lays off the workers just because of such difficult condition,” he said. Suyasa, who is also Chairman of Commission I of Badung House of Representatives, hoped the entrepreneurs can deal with the conditions caused by natural disasters, so that workers are not harmed unilaterally. Moreover, the workers becoming the company asset must be maintained and their rights must be cared for. “Employers are profitable when tourism condition is good. Now, when the condition is like this, we think the assets can be used, so there is no need for layoffs,” he said while hoping the eruption of Mount Agung will be over soon. “By that way, the collapsed condition of tourism can revive, so that the economy of Bali in macro level can recover and rise again,” he affirmed. The circles of people’s representatives in the Badung parliament also hoped there is no layoff. If massive layoff happens, the economy of Bali in macro level will be paralyzed because the majority of Balinese people rely on tourism sector. “We hope tourism players and entrepreneurs will not be reckless to impose layoff,” said Chairman of Commission IV of Badung House of Representatives, AAN Ketut Agus Nadi Putra. This Golkar politician admitted the impact of Mount Agung eruption has made a number of hotels and restaurants to reduce working time to 15 days per month. “The layoffs will result in new problems and other sectors will be affected as well as the poor will emerge,” he said. According to him, the entrepreneurs should anticipate layoff by reducing working hours. By that way, no workers will get affected by layoff. “Entrepreneurs must be diligent in looking for a solution. They may not rush to apply layoff. It would be nice if the working hours are arranged in such a way,” he concluded. (kmb27)

A farmer carries a bag of fertilizer as Mount Agung volcano emits smoke in the back ground from Sidemen Village, Karangasem, Bali, Indonesia December 6, 2017 in this photo taken by Antara Foto.
Since three days, Mount Agung increasingly spews few ashes
AMLAPURA —Until Sunday (Dec. 10), Mount Agung still continued to erupt. However, since three days the amount of ash spewed with smoke has been getting fewer and still dominated by water vapor. This was revealed by Division Head of Mitigation at the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation, I Gede Suantika, on Sunday (Dec. 10). Suantika explained that starting at 00:00 Local Time, a total 17 blasts with medium pressure and gray smoke with a height of 300 meters to 1,500 meters from the top of the crater have occurred in Mount Agung, while the eruption only happened once. “Today, the seismicity is dominated by shallow volcanic as much as four times related to the ash blasts during the eruption and blasts,” he said. Suantika explained that until now the effusive and magmatic eruption of Mount Agung is still going on. However, the character of Mount Agung eruption since
November 30 to December 7 dominant is still dominated by water vapor, while on November 25-29 was dominated by thick ashes. There was ash but the one erupted during three-day eruption is less than the eruption on November 21-29. “Hopefully, the least ash coming out in the eruption will lead to decreasing activities of Mount Agung,” said Suantika. According to Suantika, other than smaller amount of volcanic ash exuded, the supply of magma to the surface from the crater also experienced a slowdown. Until now, it has not been recorded
yet the existence of new magma supply to the surface. “To detect the magmatic movement there is usually a local tectonic earthquake, but currently it remains very minimal or only happens for one to two times,” he explained. He described, although the amount of volcanic ash released when the eruption occurred is much less, his agency will see the development of data up to a week ahead. “If the activity continues to decline, we will evaluate a week ahead to determine whether the status remains in warning or downed again to watch,” added Suantika. Oddball dinosaur was ‘mixture between a Velociraptor and a goose’ WASHINGTON - A strange turkey-sized, bird-like dinosaur that boasted a swan’s neck, arms resembling flippers, long legs and a mouth full of needle-like teeth staked out a unique amphibious lifestyle in rivers and lakes about 75 million years ago in Mongolia. Scientists on Wednesday described the dinosaur, named Halszkaraptor escuilliei, which walked on two legs on land in an upright ostrich-like posture but spent a lot of time floating atop the water, using its long neck to catch small fish, insects, mollusks and crustaceans. “It combines different features from different groups of dinosaurs in an unexpected and bizarre mix,” said study lead author Andrea Cau, a paleontologist at the Capellini Geological Museum in Bologna. “It looks like a mixture between a Velociraptor and a goose.” Its semi-aquatic lifestyle is almost unheard of among dinosaurs. The researchers believe Halszkaraptor, a close cousin of the dinosaur lineage that led to birds, was covered in feathers. But feathers are rarely preserved in fossils and none were found. Compared to birds, its forelimbs were relatively small, and structurally were “decidedly not wing-like,” said University of Alberta paleontologist Philip Currie, another of the researchers. “In water, it probably was a slow-moving swimmer, perhaps similar to a swan, and used its forelimbs to maneuver while swimming,” Cau said. The scientists used a sophisticated scanning device called a synchrotron to peer inside solid rock to make out anatomical details of the well-preserved, nearly complete fossil skeleton. “Halszkaraptor was able to run like all dinosaurs, and probably hunted its prey using an ambush strategy that used the long neck to quickly catch small animals. It was also able to swim and hunt in water, using again an ambush strategy thanks to its long and flexible neck,” Cau said. Its snout was low and slender, contributing to its bird-like appearance.“I would guess that it had a lifestyle similar to a shorebird or heron,” Currie said. It is noteworthy not just for its weirdness but for the circuitous route it took before being examined by scientists. The fossil was poached from a fossil site in southern Mongolia and sold to private collectors before being spotted by French fossil dealer François Escuillié, who verified its authenticity, acquired it and provided it to researchers. The fossil will enter the collection of a Mongolian scientific institution. (rtr)

Artist’s conception of the most-distant supermassive black hole ever discovered, which is part of a quasar from just 690 million years after the Big Bang is shown in this illustration released on December 6, 2017.
Colossal distant black hole holds surprises about early universe
WASHINGTON - The oldest and most distant black hole ever observed -- a celestial brute 800 million times more massive than the sun -- is providing scientists some surprises about the nature of the universe when, on a cosmic scale, it was a mere toddler. Astronomers on Wednesday said the black hole, residing at the center of a highly luminous celestial object called a quasar, is located about 13.1 billion light years away from Earth. The quasar’s light detected by the researchers dates back to about 690 million years after the Big Bang that created the universe, when the cosmos was only 5 percent of its present age. “So if the universe was a 50-year-old person, we’re seeing a picture of that person when he or she was 2-1/2 years old,” said astronomer Eduardo Bañados of the Carnegie Institution for Science, who led the research published in the journal Nature. “When we’re looking at further distances, we’re also looking back in time” because of the time it takes for light to travel across
the universe, Bañados added. That means this object dates back 13.1 billion years. By way of comparison, Earth is about 4.5 billion years old. The newly detected quasar, designated as J1342+0928, existed during a fundamental shift in the nature of the early universe when it was moving from its “dark ages,” with no light emitted, into a time of luminosity, as gravity condensed matter into the very first stars. “This object provides us with a measurement of the time at which the universe first became illuminated with starlight,” said another of the researchers, physics professor Robert Simcoe of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Kavli Institute for Astrophysics and Space Research.
Finding such a large black hole existing so early in the universe’s history surprised the researchers. Its very existence at that point in time challenges current notions about the formation and growth of such objects, they said. “The universe is full of surprises,” Bañados said. Quasars, energized by gases spiraling at high speeds into an enormous black hole, are known to inhabit the center of certain galaxies, sometimes outshining all the stars in those galaxies. In black holes, gravity has such a strong pull that not even light can escape. This black hole was seen devouring material at the center of a galaxy. The object was studied using ground-based telescopes in Chile and Hawaii and NASA’s orbiting Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE). (rtr)
MANGUPURA — To campaign that Bali, especially Nusa Dua area, remains safe to be visited, the Indonesia Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) held the Nusa Dua Light Festival. The festival opened on December 8 will last until January 14, 2018 on Peninsula Island. According to ITDC Director of Corporate Strategy and Finance, Jatmiko K. Santosa, the organization of Nusa Dua Light Festival aims to show to the world that Bali stays safe to be visited. Through this event, Nusa Dua and Bali Island are still able to prepare attractions and high level of hospitality for tourists. In addition, this event is also to welcome Christmas holidays and the turn of the year. “This festival activity is a form and effort to bring tourists to the Island of the Gods in the middle of Mount Agung eruption disaster. We want to convey that all destinations in Bali in addition to the red (dangerous) zones are still safe and operating as usual,” he said at the opening of the festival. Jatmiko insisted that Bali is always ready to receive tourist arrivals at the end of the year. In the case of Mount Agung eruption impacting on tourists staying in the Nusa Dua area, his management is ready to implement the government policy related to standard mitigation so that security and comfort of tourists can be maintained. Previously the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) has released an estimated radius of Mount Agung eruption hazard as far as eight kilometers plus the sectoral extension to the north-northeast and southeast-south-southwest as far as 10 km from Mount Agung. Thus, there are two tourist areas that should be avoided namely Besakih Temple and the area near Mount Agung. The distance of Nusa Dua from Mount Agung is very far reaching 40 kilometers. So, it remains in a safe radius. “Tourists need not worry about attending the Nusa Dua Light Festival and enjoy their holiday in Bali as long as in the safe zone. We are optimistic that our target audience can be achieved,” added Jatmiko. The Nusa Dua Light Festival held at the turn of the year is the second time after a similar event was held in June-July 2017. In this year’s implementation, ITDC makes cooperation with PT Cikal Bintang Bangsa featuring the theme of ‘The Jungle.’ Visitors can enjoy the beauty of lanterns made to resemble forests and various types of animals such as dragons, dinosaurs and other forest animals. In addition, tourists will also be entertained with a variety of entertainment, such as local cultural performances, music and food delights. For visitors loving some challenges, there is hot balloon with the capacity of six persons that can be flown with the height of 25 meters. Other rides include trampolines, balloon houses, mini trains, and mini helicopters that can be enjoyed by children. “With such variety of attractions and rides, the Nusa Dua Light Festival featuring The Jungle will become a perfect entertainment destination for families at the end of 2017 and the beginning of the New Year 2018,” explained Jatmiko. Disability does not hinder people to be an entrepreneur
BANGLI — Disability is not an obstacle to be an entrepreneur. At least, it has been proved by a number of people with disabilities in Bangli coalesced into the Widura joint business group (KUBE). Within the past two years, they have been entrepreneurs producing and selling incense stick independently. Members of the KUBE Widura, Komang Suyasni, said on Saturday (Dec. 9) the business of making incense has been running with the group for 2015. Before entering the incense business in 2014, she and a dozen other group members joining the disabled group of the Bunga Bali Foundation had attended a training to make incense held by the Bangli Social Services. After attending the training, they got capital assistance from central government worth IDR 20 million. ‘The aid was then used for business capital to make incense,” she explained. This woman from Yangapi village, Tembuku, further said the incense produced so far consists of two kinds, namely imported incense and local incense. In the production activities at the secretariat of the Bunga Bali Foundation in Bangli, KUBE Widura has been processing semi-finished materials. This is done because KUBE Widura does not have a
machine to make incense. “If purchasing, the machine is quite expensive. The price reaches tens of millions,” she said. Suyasni said the semi-finished incense material is purchased from various regions such as Gianyar and Denpasar. She also brings it from Surabaya. In Bangli, the semi-finished incense is then given a fragrance and packed in various sizes. Suyasni said the incense production is usually done once a month. In once production, the incense yielded reaches about one sack. Regarding the marketing, the incense with Kube Widura brand has been done independently by each member of the business group. The sales deducted with the profit margin are collected to be capital. Since the incense sold is produced by processing semifinished material, Suyasni acknowledged the profit margin is very thin. According to her, if only the production process
can be done from the beginning the profit can be more than what she earns today. “The current condition of marketing is somewhat decreasing. Hopefully, the incense we produce can be absorbed in the stalls,” said this 37-year-old woman. In addition to making incense, her business group also plans to make ceremonial facilities of bamboo matting, such as klatkat and baskets. However, so far it just remains a plan. “The marketing is carried out by our friends,” she said. Currently some members of KUBE Widura also fill their day by selling canang oblation and offer massage services beyond the time of producing incense. The business having been done by people with disabilities in the Bunga Bali Foundation is able to fulfill their daily needs including sending their children to school. “According to our friends here, they prefer to working to begging,” she concluded. Bangladesh minister says wants to “wipe out” Manila bank for heist role
DHAKA - Bangladesh’s finance minister said late on Saturday he wanted to “wipe out” a Philippines bank that was used to channel $81 million stolen from the Bangladeshi central bank’s account with the Federal Reserve Bank of New York last year. Abul Maal A. Muhith was responding to questions from reporters about a Reuters story on Friday that said Bangladesh Bank had asked the New York Fed to join a lawsuit it was considering filing against Manila-based Rizal Commercial Banking Corp (RCBC) seeking damages. “The Bangladesh Bank has taken a decision (on filing a suit). They will let me know. We haven’t so far taken any steps as the Philippines government was taking care of it (investigating the heist),” Muhith said. “But it seems Rizal bank has been playing delinquent. We want to wipe out Rizal bank from the world.” Muhith did not elaborate. He did not respond to requests seeking comment. Unidentified hackers stole the money using fraudulent orders on the SWIFT payments system. The money was sent to accounts at RCBC and then disappeared into the casino industry in the Philippines. Nearly two years later, there is no word on who was responsible and Bangladesh Bank has been able to retrieve only about $15 million, mostly from a Manila junket operator. The Philippine central bank fined RCBC a record one billion pesos ($20 million) last year for its failure to prevent the movement of the stolen money through it. RCBC has said it would not pay any compensation to Bangladesh Bank and that Dhaka bank bore responsibility for the theft since it was negligent. RCBC did not immediately respond to a request seeking comment on a Sunday about Muhith’s comments. (rtr)
Stories of Mount Agung refugee, Survive by peeling garlic
Ketut Siti is pealing garlic
IBP/Sosiawan
RESIDENTS of Sebudi village, Selat, Karangasem, have been taking refuge in Klungkung for three months to save themselves from Mount Agung eruption. Amid such long time, they try to kill time by being a laborer. One of them is Ketut Siti. Since early morning, Siti has started her work in one of the collectors at Galiran Market. She takes garlic wrapped in sack. Then, it is spilled on a not to wide plastic mat. She uses a mask to avoid the prominent smell. While sitting, this kitchen spice is peeled to be clean by knife at her right hand. Amidst such busy life, she takes time to tell stories. Such profession has been pursued since about two months ago shortly after the evacuation. What she does is not without reason. It is not solely meant to eliminate saturation in refugee
camp, but also to get provision of life after leaving home. It is for provision of her second son remaining to study at State College of Accountancy (STAN). “Not all the expenses are borne at the college, but he still needs pocket money, so she must work. Her first son has graduated from Health College (STIKES),” she said recently. She works from 09:00 until 17:00 Local Time. Since she takes odd jobs, the wage earned is a little. To peel a sack of garlic, she only gets IDR 7,000. It is really not comparable with her hard work. Nevertheless, she remains grateful as God still gives a way to survive. “Within a day, she can peel out six sacks of garlic but the wages are small. So, for her son’s provision, we have to borrow,” she said. While at her hometown, she can
take various jobs. The results are also more promising. In Klungkung, she flees to her relative’s house with her husband becoming a pangayah (devotional worker) at Pasar Agung Temple. “My husband does not work, he just pays devotional work at temple,” she said. Many other refugees are also forced to do various jobs. No other ways can be taken to obtain provision. “Many people work like this, not only peel garlic but also onion,” explained Siti. One of the merchants, Gusti Ngurah Indrawan, said the presence of refugees to work is quite helpful. All can finish more quickly, especially when the order is a lot. “Sometimes, more than one person works here. They claim to also eliminate saturation in refugee camps,” he said. (sos)

Japan, U.S., South Korea to hold missile tracking drill amid North Korea crisis
TOKYO - The United States, Japan and South Korea will hold two days of missile tracking drills starting on Monday, Japan’s Maritime Self-Defence Force said, as tensions rise in the region over North Korea’s fast-developing weapons programmes.

The United States and South Korea conducted large-scale military drills last week, which the North said made the outbreak of war “an established fact”. North Korea has fired missiles over Japan as it pursues nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles in defiance of U.N. sanctions and international condemnation. On Nov. 29, it test-fired an intercontinental ballistic missile which it said was its most advanced yet, capable of reaching the mainland United States. This week’s exercises will be the sixth drills sharing information in tracking ballistic missiles among the three nations, the defence force said. It did not say whether the controversial THAAD system would be involved. The installation of the U.S. Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system in South Korea has angered China, which fears its powerful radar
could look deep into China and threaten its own security. North Korea’s missile test last month prompted a U.S. warning that North Korea’s leadership would be “utterly destroyed” if war were to break out. The Pentagon has mounted repeated shows of force after North Korean tests. The United States has also pressured China and other nations to cut trade and diplomatic ties with North Korea, as part of international efforts to dry up Pyongyang’s illegal cash flows that could fund its weapons programmes. On Sunday, South Korea said it would impose new unilateral sanctions on 20 institutions and a dozen individuals in North Korea, barring any financial transactions between those sanctioned and any South Koreans. “This unilateral sanction will prevent illegal funds flowing to North Korea and contribute to
reinforce international communities’ sanctions against North Korea,” South Korea’s finance ministry said in a statement. The move is largely symbolic as trade and financial exchanges between the two Koreas have been barred since May 2010 following the torpedoing of a South Korean warship, which the North denied. Japanese Defence Minister Itsunori Onodera said the ministry plans to include 730 million yen ($6.4 million) to help build a new missile interceptor system, the Aegis Ashore, in its next fiscal year budget request, public broadcaster NHK reported. North Korea regularly threatens to destroy South Korea, Japan and the United States and says its weapons programmes are necessary to counter U.S. aggression. The United States stations 28,500 troops in the South, a legacy of the 1950-53 Korean War. (rtr)

Visa said inflation-adjusted consumer spending last month was 0.9 percent lower than in 2016. This was a smaller decline than October’s 2.1 percent drop but still enough to make annual falls in spending likely for the first time since 2012 for both the Christmas season and 2017 overall, the company said. The biggest falls in spending came on expensive items such as cars and Christmas trips abroad, while cheaper luxuries such as beauty treatments and cosmetics saw gains. “People opt for smaller treats, at the same time tightening their belts when it comes to larger purchases,” Visa executive Mark Antipof said. Black Friday discounts in late November boosted online sales at the expense of physical stores, Visa added. British inflation has held at a five-year high of 3.0 percent since September, pushed up by the fall in the pound since June 2016’s Brexit vote, while wages have failed to keep pace. The British Chambers of Commerce, in a quarterly update to its economic outlook on Monday, said it expected this to persist throughout 2018. “Continued uncertainty over Brexit and the burden of upfront cost pressures facing businesses is likely to stifle business investment, while falling real wage growth is ex-
pected to continue to weigh on consumer spending,” BCC economist Suren Thiru said. The BCC cut its forecasts for 2017, 2018 and 2019, seeing growth of 1.5 percent this year, slowing to 1.1 percent in 2018 and only partially recovering to 1.3 percent in 2019. This is slightly below the average for economists polled by Reuters, who expect growth of 1.3 percent next year and 1.5 percent in 2019, when Britain is due to leave the European Union. On Friday, Britain and the EU agreed on a Brexit divorce
deal, enabling them to begin talks about trade and a two-year transition period that will start when Britain leaves the bloc on March 29, 2019. But businesses said they would need to see a clear transition agreement as soon as possible for them to be able to put contingency plans on hold. Separately, jobs website Indeed said Britain remained by far the most popular EU location for cross-border job searches, although Germany, Ireland and Luxembourg had seen some gains over the past two years at the United Kingdom’s expense. Wow It’s Quite Delicious Vegetable Speaking about Balinese traditional culinary traditions will never end. One of the menus having not been widely known is plecing gonda (gooseweed with hot spices). However, in one region, this type of green vegetable sometimes becomes favorite food. Moreover, it is processed in a simple manner. It just needs to be boiled and then mixed with tomato seasoning and fried onion to make the taste very delicious. It offers typical and tempting aroma. Plecing gonda has become a typical food for Balinese community. This vegetable menu is very close to farmers living in countryside. Other than easy to get the ingredient, the preparation is also easy. Simply fill with spices in the form of garlic, chili, large chili peppers, tomatoes, shrimp paste, lemon and salt to taste, plecing gonda is already tasted different from other vegetables. The preparation is not too complicated. Ingredient in the form of gonda is boiled until cooked. All spices are cleaned, pulverized until subsequently fried, except for lemon. Well, the serving of gonda having been boiled is spiced
and then mixed until finely blended. To give a distinctive taste, it can be provided with grated kaffir lime. Other than by boiling, this gooseweed vegetable can also be cooked by stir-frying. Optionally, it can also be roasted and then given seasoning like salt, chili and coconut oil (traditionally processed). Such cooking method was usually performed by farmers that have completed their work in the fields. When they arrive home, they usually carry a handful of gooseweed. This vegetable is processed as above and then eaten with the family. Gonda plants are very close to farmers’ life in Bali, especially farmers in Tabanan, right in Ole hamlet, Marga Dauh Puri, Marga subdistrict. This type of plant is actually a weed plant, but taken advantage by farmers as a daily food. It is planted on the sidelines of paddy plants (by intercropping), so it does not require a large area. Harvest time is also very short namely about 20-25 days. The color is green. It does not need to be sprayed with chemicals, so the gonda is free from chemicals. (kmb)
The beauty of Nusa Penida islands continues to draw the attention. It offers diverse natural scenery such as the magnificence of the beach. Now, a new pristine object emerges with a lovely attraction namely Sebela Beach at Karang hamlet, Pejukutan. Sebela Beach located adjacent to Atuh Beach is about 19 kilometers from the subdistrict town. This coastal cliff and slightly sandy beach is made into a fishing object by local people. All this time, this beach is only known by local residents. However, since the road access has been improved, Sebela Beach begins to be thronged by foreign and local travelers. A local resident, I Nyoman Sudiarman, said on Wednesday (Dec. 7) that Sebela Beach is an interesting object with the charm of unspoiled nature. Previously, the road access remained to become a constraint when visiting this destination. But now it can be reached directly by motorcycle. The beach with distinctively not too high expanse of cliff is more
visited by fishing hobbyists. They mostly come from Denpasar, Tabanan and surrounding areas. Sudiarman hoped the road can be paved as soon as possible in order to provide comfort for visitors heading for the Sebela Beach. The area of Atuh Beach is often called the Raja Lima (literally, the king of five) denoting a prime choice in the area of ??East Nusa Penida so that it has an impact on Sebela Beach as a complement to enjoy the attraction of beautiful natural graces on the islands of Nusa Penida. A visitor, Dewa Ayu Embas Saraswati, said on Wednesday (Dec. 7) that the hidden destinations are now being hunted amid the saturation to the existing tourist attractions in Bali. Moreover, the Sebela Beach looks like a perfectly-combined natural attraction where visitors can see sunrise, the stretch of cliff and Mount Rinjani in Lombok. “This is my first visit here. In fact, it is quite beautiful,” she said. (kmb)

Bitcoin futures steal spotlight, momentum keeps pushing stocks up LONDON - World stocks climbed and equity volatility neared a record low on Monday as investors focused on signs of strong economic growth ahead of a slew of central bank rate decisions, while the launch of bitcoin futures fed the market’s cryptocurrency obsession. European stocks drew strength from a positive Asian session to trade higher across the board in early deals, nearing fourweek highs as bank stocks boosted benchmarks. MSCI’s main European Index rose 0.1 percent while the index of leading European companies gained 0.2 percent. Britain’s FTSE climbed 0.6 percent thanks to a boost from a weaker sterling. Stealing the spotlight was the debut of bitcoin futures contracts, allowing investors to bet on the price of the cryptocurrency in one, two or three months. UK consumers cut spending in run-up to Christmas - Visa
LONDON - Squeezed British consumers reined in Christmas travel plans and bought fewer new cars last month, setting the stage for the first fall in festive spending in five years, credit card company Visa said on Monday. The downbeat message came alongside a cut by the British Chambers of Commerce to its economic outlook for the next two years as the business organisation sees inflation rising faster than pay for the next two years.

of 21 percent. It was last quoted at $18,600, while bitcoin itself hovered at $16,431.76. Bitcoin has rocketed up a gravity-defying 1,600 percent since the start of the year, attracting institutional interest - and concerns that it is a bubble in the making. “The one-month contract is trading at around an 11 percent premium to the underlying bitcoin, and for me that’s a clear indication that there’s no connection between the two markets,” said Lukas Daalder, chief investment officer at Robeco. Several online brokerages have not yet allowed trading of the new futures. “I can understand you don’t see that many people who are willing to offer this contract, because you can’t hedge your underlying risk if you can’t short it,” Daalder added. “This only adds to the bitcoin phenomenon. It’s interesting to watch, but not a market that I would like to touch.” While frantic trading kept bitcoin volatility dizzying, a gauge of S&P 500 volatility dipped below
10 to its lowest in more than two weeks, nearing the record low hit in November. World stocks rose, flirting with their most recent record highs, boosted by more benign Asian trading after Friday’s strong U.S. employment data and Chinese trade figures cemented optimism on the global economy. Global stocks rose 0.3 percent to 505.35, nearing last week’s intraday record of 507.09. “Momentum behind stock markets has been pretty solid, supported in part by good numbers on the economic front and not bad earnings. I don’t see anything happening right now that could break the momentum,” said Daalder. BIG WEEK FOR MONETARY POLICY MOVES
Currency and bond markets were cautious ahead of a big week of policy meetings globally, although the Federal Reserve is the only major central bank expected to raise interest rates. The Bank of England and the European Central
Bank are widely seen holding rates steady. “Global growth has strengthened but there is very little evidence yet that inflation pressures are picking up, which continues to favour only a gradual pace of monetary policy normalization,” Lee Hardman, strategist at MUFG, told clients. Sterling edged lower after a volatile week, last at $1.3375. The dollar index, which measures the greenback against a basket of currencies, eased 0.1 percent, hovering near a three-week high after five straight sessions of gains. Sluggish U.S. wage growth and inflation have sparked some concern over rate rises, and traders will zoom in on the Fed’s future rate projections on Wednesday. “It’s a tall order for the median Fed dots to shift lower, but we may see a slight downshift in the distribution,” said ING forex strategists in a note, adding that the dollar index could fall back below 93 as the Fed’s 25bp rate rise is already priced in.
Data out on Friday showed average hourly earnings in the United States came in lower than economists forecast, despite strongerthan-expected non-farm payrolls, which rose by 228,000 in November. Most high-grade euro zone bond yields were lacklustre in early trading, with 10-year Bund yields, the benchmark for the region, edging below 0.30 percent. “Bunds have drifted lower in recent weeks,” said Robeco’s Daalder. “I would say there’s some complacency for sure, but I don’t see any major moves until the new year.” The gap between U.S. and German bond yields came close to its widest since April as the monetary policy paths of the two central banks diverged. In commodities, signs of increased drilling activity after the latest rise in the U.S. rig count weighed on oil prices. U.S. crude fell to $57.13 a barrel and Brent crude inched 21 cents lower to $63.16, slipping from a recent 2-1/2 year peak of $64.65. (rtr)

Wasan Temple Projected for Spiritual Tourist Attraction
IBP/kmb
Historical heritage of Wasan Temple Site, Puseh Wasan Temple, is located at Blahtanah hamlet, Batuan Kaler, Sukawati, Gianyar. It will be transformed into a spiritual attraction. Some time ago, the Bali, NTB, and NTT Archaeological Institute returned to research by taking the position of excavation in the northeast of Wasan Temple Site. This 24th research stage involved 12 researchers to find the supporting buildings of Wasan Temple. In previous research was found archeological items with fundamental in nature in the form of a temple with stone structure having the foot length of 11 meters, width of 8 meters, and height of 13 meters as well as a pond measuring 22 meters long, 7 meters wide and 3 meters depth. This research also involved about five supporting devotees (pengempon) of the local temple, especially in the excavation of the land. Once everything is revealed, Wasan Site located amid the paddy fields of Subak Wasan is projected to be a spiritual tourist attraction. “This research is a continuation of the findings of 2016. At that time was found some structural buildings made of sand stone,” said the Head of the Archaeological Institute for Bali, NTB, and NTT, I Gusti Made Suarbawa. He has not been able to predict the supporting buildings of the temple. However, in terms of the soil texture, the building is estimated to have been buried during a flash flood disaster. The type of floating soil also indicates if this area was also affected by volcanic ashes from the eruption of Mount Rinjani in Lombok in ancient time. Suarbawa added that the study was based on the research during the period of 1986 to 2006 that found archaeological remains like the temples with stone construction and a pond having been restored by Heritage Conservation Agency for Bali, NTB and NTT Region
in 2009. The results of the study were followed up with the excavations from 2011 to 2017. Suarbawa said the complex of Wasan Temple Site is estimated to date from XIII-XIV AD based on statues found on Wasan site, such as four-faced Brahma statue, deity statue and Nandhi statue whose lapels are decorated with skulls. Besides, it was found the statues of Ganesha, Lingam-Yoni, statues of embodiments and statues of animals. The finding of this Wasan Temple site is inseparable from the role of a Dutch researcher, JC Krishman, who first visited the Wasan site in 1950. At that time, he only found the mounds of land and a number of scattered ancient statues. But the temple supporting devotees still used the location for worship by establishing a simple building on it. A few years later, the Denpasar Archaeological Institute conducted an observation to the site and found some relics of statue. The observation was done by accident. In 1986, the institute was doing research in Cangi, and then on the request of residents, the Denpasar Archaeological Institute team was delivered to Wasan Site. Priest of the Puseh Wasan, Jro Mangku Wayan Lasia Siaja, 48, said that he supports the research so that people know about the history of Wasan site. Formerly, the Puseh Temple area was still a bush, but after the research it has turned into something like this. “Existence of this temple is very strategic located in the area of ??Denpasar-Gianyar road section, making it possible to become a tourist attraction. Many foreign tourists had made a visit to this site,” he said. Tourists from the Netherlands and France came here where they more frequently visited for spiritual tourism purposes. They get information from the internet. However, the tourists often complain about the difficulty to look for the site location. Then, it needs a signboard of Wasan Site. “In the 2000s, the tourists made a visit and stayed overnight to do meditation,” he explained. (kmb)

Drop in the ocean? British supermarkets look to bottle deposits to cut pollution LONDON - A return scheme for plastic bottles could soon allow British consumers to enjoy a drink of juice or water without adding to a sea of pollution - as well as getting some of their money back. The idea of a deposit return scheme (DRS) for bottles has won the backing of two supermarkets, Iceland and the Co-op, the first major retailers to support the policy to promote recycling and tackle ocean plastic pollution. “Introducing a DRS may well add to our costs of doing business. However, we believe it is a small price to pay for the long term sustainability of this planet,” said Richard Walker, director for sustainability at Iceland Foods, in a statement. “I urge all other retailers to do the right thing and follow suit.” A deposit return scheme involves consumers paying a small deposit that is refunded when they return empty plastic bottles and is common in many parts of the world including Denmark, Germany and Australia. From fishing lines to flip flops, there are more than 5 trillion pieces of plastic floating in the world’s oceans, according to a 2014 study. As concern grows about vast floating fields of plastic debris, environmental groups are lobbying the government and retailers to take action to catch up with other countries on cutting plastic littering and marine pollution. “We hope that other supermarkets will see the way the wind is blowing on this issue ... and follow Iceland and the Co-op in recognising that our oceans should not be our rubbish bin,” said Tisha Brown of Greenpeace UK. In London, consumers expressed support for a bottle deposit scheme. “Not only would I benefit financially, albeit minutely, it would make the process of recycling simpler and easier,” said 30-yearold train driver Ahmed said on WhatsApp. Such a move would follow Britain’s decision in 2015 to charge 5 pence for plastic carrier bags, legislation that slashed usage and has taken about 9 billion plastic bags out of circulation. “I think (a deposit scheme) would be a good incentive,” said Sahar Eljack, 26, adding that small local shops not just large supermarket chains should take part. Social Democratic Party (SPD) leader Martin Schulz attends the SPD party convention in Berlin, Germany, December 8, 2017.
German conservatives reject “United States of Europe” ahead of coalition talks
BERLIN - Senior members of German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservatives on Saturday rejected the vision for a “United States of Europe” put forward by the Social Democrats (SPD), with whom they are hoping to form a governing coalition.
SPD leader Martin Schulz said on Thursday his party, which suffered its worst post-war election result in September, would only gain support by providing a clear vision of Europe, and called for a United States of Europe by 2025. Merkel’s conservatives, who lost voters to the far-right due to their liberal migrant policy, want the SPD to agree to a last-ditch alliance with them after talks on a tie-up with two smaller parties collapsed. Discussions on maintaining the conservative-SPD coalition, which has governed Germany since 2013, are due to start on Wednesday but the two parties look set to clash over the issue of Europe, which is likely to play a key role in talks. Senior conservative Volker Kauder said Schulz’s European proposal posed “a danger to the EU and citizens’ approval of Europe” and Peter Altmaier, Merkel’s chancellery chief, said the idea, and especially the timeframe, was unrealistic. An Emnid poll for Bild newspaper found less than a third of Germans (30 percent) supported Schulz’s idea while almost half (48 percent) rejected it. Kauder told the Tagesspiegel newspaper it was necessary to strengthen Europe but also important to recognise that at the moment people longed for
the “reliability that they believe they can find in national states”. He added: “The proposal would also jeopardise the work of unification that is unique in the history of the world because the majority of member states certainly wouldn’t participate in creating a united states.” ANOTHER GRAND COALITION? Altmaier told the Rheinische Post newspaper that Schulz’s proposal had surprised him and it would be better to tackle specific problems in Europe such as unemployment, the protection of external borders and coordination of economic policy. “The discussion about whether Europe should be a federal state, confederation or a united states is one for academics and journalists - not for German foreign policy,” Altmaier said. “A United States of Europe would transfer member states’ sovereignty to Brussels and there would not be a majority for that in many EU states,” he added. Merkel has also been sceptical, saying on Thursday she would rather concentrate on more cooperation in defence by 2025, on employment and on innovation. The Christian Social Union (CSU) - the Bavarian sister party to Merkel’s Christian Democrats (CDU) - also rejected Schulz’s plan. Senior CSU
member Markus Soeder told Welt am Sonntag his party did not want Germany becoming an “administrative unit” of the European Commission in a “European superstate”. But the SPD defended Schulz’s plan, with Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel telling Deutschlandfunk radio it would ensure Europe’s voice is heard on the global stage at a time when the influence of Asia, Latin America and Africa is growing. The SPD is stressing that the outcome of talks with the conservatives is still open but Schulz said on Saturday if the SPD had the chance to prevent old-age poverty, improve nursing care and affordable housing, it needed to take that opportunity. Other options are a Merkel-led minority government or new elections. The SPD has not ruled out either possibility, and newly elected SPD General Secretary Lars Klingbeil told Bild newspaper he would immediately start preparing for a possible election campaign. The SPD had initially planned to revamp itself in opposition after its poor election showing but agreed to talk to the conservatives when other coalition talks collapsed. An Emnid poll showed 61 percent of Germans thought joining another ‘grand coalition’ would weaken the SPD further. (rtr)
JAKARTA - Indonesian antiterrorism police have detained 18 people with links to militant groups in a bid to cut the risk of attacks during Christmas and the New Year in the world’s biggest Muslim-majority country, police said on Monday. Near-simultaneous attacks on churches in the capital, Jakarta, and elsewhere on Christmas Eve in 2000, killed nearly 20 people. Ever since, authorities have stepped up security at churches and tourist spots for the holiday. Police Chief Tito Karnavian said while there was no evidence of a specific plot, the detentions were
made in a bid to head off trouble. “We’re doing a pre-emptive strike,” Karnavian told reporters. “The majority of them have links to previous incidents (and people) who we had arrested earlier,” he said. Police said that 12 people had been detained in South Sumatra, four in West Kalimantan, one in Malang in East Java and one in Surabaya in the same province. Under Indonesia’s anti-terrorism laws, investigators can hold people for seven days before determining whether they will be designated suspects or released, said police spokesman Setyo Wasisto. Indonesia has seen its share
of militant attacks over the years aimed at foreign, Christian and government targets including blasts on the tourist island of Bali in 2002 that killed 202 people.
Since then, police have managed to stamp out or weaken many militant networks although there has been a resurgence in radicalism in recent years, inspired largely by
Islamic State. A series of smallscale attacks since early 2016 has been linked to Islamic State, which is believed to have thousands of sympathizers in Indonesia.(rtr)

Hardline Indonesian Muslim groups burn US, Israeli flags over Trump’s Jerusalem move
JAKARTA - Hardline Muslim groups in Indonesia burned photos of U.S. President Donald Trump, as well as U.S. and Israeli flags, on Monday during a protest outside the U.S. embassy against Trump’s decision to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. Indonesia, home to the world’s largest Muslim population, has joined a global chorus of condemnation of Trump’s controversial move on Israel, which they say threatens security and stability in the Middle East and the world. The status of Jerusalem, a city holy to Jews, Muslims and Christians, is one of the thorniest barriers to a lasting Israeli-Palestinian peace. Jerusalem’s eastern sector was captured by Israel in a 1967 war and annexed in a move not recognised internationally. Palestinians claim East Jerusalem for the capital of an independent state that they seek, while Israel maintains that all of Jerusalem is its capital. Hundreds attended the protest outside the
U.S. embassy in Jakarta, which was barricaded by barbed wire and dozens of police officers. “Let us witness the destruction of Israel’s hegemony,” one protest leader shouted into a megaphone as protesters burned an Israeli flag. “We will support Palestine with our blood.” Many protesters waved Palestinian flags and carried banners supporting “intifada”, or an uprising against Israel, and rally leaders also shouted anti-Semitic
slogans. The protest was led by the Islamic Defenders Front, an aggressive vigilante group that calls for sharia, or Islamic religious law, to be imposed in Indonesia, a secular country. The demonstration followed a much larger protest at the weekend, where thousands called for diplomatic relations with the United States to be severed and for the U.S. ambassador to be expelled. Indonesia supports a two-state solution in the Israel-Palestine conflict.(rtr)

Padlock of Love
Romantic Attraction in Tegallalang
GIANYAR - Padlock of Love becomes a romantic tourist attraction visited by many young people. Located at Gagah hamlet, Tegallalang, Gianyar, this attraction has become famous since the beginning of 2017. As the name implies, this tourist attraction offering panoramic paddy field background is targeting young people who are in lovesick. There is a special place to tie their love.
Local travelers and those from outside Bali come in droves to tie their love on the stage in the form of padlock as high as three meters. Young couples then can take selfie photo on stage in the middle of paddy fields that reads ‘love’ with beautiful colors. “Hopefully, the atmosphere and aura of this place could make our love everlasting,” said Made Setiawan and Putu Rani who are tying their love in the Padlock of Love. This new tourist spot is interesting. The atmosphere is
silent, cool and peaceful. The open stage has been protected with safety rod at the edges. It is purposely made as a place to take selfie photo for visitors that want to immortalize the most beautiful memories. This tool then becomes an icon commonly known as the Padlock of Love. Although prepared for the young, this Padlock of Love attraction is also appropriate to be visited by children or adult travelers, especially those who like having a promenade. Terraced paddy fields offer beautiful panorama, and it is rich in activities. One of them is the farmers remaining to work on their paddy fields traditionally. Understandably, the padlock of love is located in the middle of paddy fields, so that those coming by car must walk to get there. In contrast to travelers riding a motorcycle, they can get to the location easily. Although parking far on the highway, along the trip they will not feel tired because of being able to witness the activities of farmers. The padlock of love is equipped with a restaurant with
Balinese traditional style building. The menus offered are mostly traditional, such as gado-gado, fruit salad, ice with jelly-like filler and young coconut, as well as various Balinese snacks. After taking selfie, visitors can take advantage of this restaurant to relax while enjoying the menus. Operations Manager of the Padlock of Love attraction, I Wayan Sugiartha, said that the land conjured up into the attraction was almost sold at a fantastic price. However, he rethought to sell his land because it is the only heritage of his ancestors. He then established a new contemporary tourist attraction. “We name this new attraction the Padlock of Love,” said Sugiarta. To promote, Sugiarta explained that he does it more through Facebook, Instagram and other social media. “We are very grateful that this artificial tourist attraction becomes a traveler’s choice. Many young fans of selfie make a visit, either from Bali and outside Bali or even from overseas,” he concluded. (kmb)
LONDON - Retired former Tour de France champion Bradley Wiggins was back in a velodrome but not on two wheels as his competitive rowing debut ended in disappointment on Saturday. Wiggins, the five-times Olympic cycling champion who is considering a switch to rowing with an eye on Tokyo 2020, finished 21st in the British Indoor Rowing Championships. Seated on an ergometer the bearded 37-year-old took on some of Britain’s best rowers in the elite 2-kilometre race at the London Velodrome but trailed home in six minutes 22.5 seconds. Adam Neill, part of Britain’s rowing team, won in five minutes 48.2 seconds. Wiggins, the first Briton to win the Tour de France in 2012, had his rhythm broken early on when he thought he had false-started and shook his head in disappointment as he walked off. Two-time Olympic rowing champion James Cracknell, who is mentoring Wiggins in his new venture, said he expected his charge to continue in his quest despite failing to get close to the six minute five secs target he had set himself. “The first thing I will say is don’t stop,” Cracknell told reporters.
“Bradley knows how to race. His rhythm looked very good. He will have to look at what point he was red-lining. “He has set himself a target and like anyone who sets a target you either come back stronger or go away and I think I know what camp he is in. He will come back. “He doesn’t want to go out on failing and he will want to come back and do it better.” No Olympic cyclist has ever made the transition to rowing at the highest level, but Wiggins has received plenty of support from Britain’s oarsmen, including Neill. “I think it’s really interesting and he’s obviously an unbelievable sportsman,” Neill said. “Some people might say it’s impossible but it’s Bradley Wiggins so what is impossible for that guy, he won the Tour de France. “When he sets his mind to something he doesn’t let things get in his way. He still has to learn about rowing on the water, but I don’t see any reason he can’t give it a go. “This was his first 2km. He has a way to go but his improvement curve will be high. He should not be too disappointed because if he did it again next week I imagine he would go faster.” (rtr)

Sky Procycling rider and leader’s yellow jersey Bradley Wiggins of Britain celebrates with a British national flag on the Champs Elysees after winning the 99th Tour de France cycling race in Paris, France, July 22, 2012.
Monaco and Abu Dhabi reported no change while five, including two of the races with the biggest overall turnout, saw slight decreases on 2016. Formula One said in a statement that the season’s global average attendance per three-day event was 203,570 and 76,722 on race Sunday. The total attendance over the 20-race season was 4,071,400 and is set to grow next year with an extra race added to the calendar. “An attendance of more than 200,000 per event means that for 20 weekends per year, the population of a medium-sized city visits a race track to watch a Formula One Grand Prix,” said commercial managing director Sean Bratches. The 2017 season was the first under new U.S.-based owners Liberty Media. Canada reported the biggest overall attendance of 360,000, an increase of 60,000 on 2016, followed by the British Grand Prix at Silverstone on 344,500 and Mexico with 337,043. Formula One said the attendance figures were pro-
vided by promoters. Azerbaijan saw the biggest percentage rise, up 58 percent with a reported crowd of 71,451. That was still the smallest of any race. Japan saw the biggest drop, down to 137,000 from a previous 145,000. Malaysia, which has fallen off the calendar after this year’s race, pulled in a total of 110,604 -- a 19.69 percent rise on 2016. The Mexican Grand Prix was named the best race of the season for the third year in a row. The award is decided by Formula One management in consultation with teams and stakeholders. “This is the first time ever that the same city gets three in a row,” race promoter Alejandro Soberon told Reuters at the governing FIA’s end-of-season awards in Paris. “I think we are going to continue doing bigger and better every time,” added Soberon, president and chief executive of the CIE Group that hosts the race with government backing. The Australia Grand Prix also won the award in three successive seasons but one of those was in Adelaide before the race moved to Melbourne. Soberon said the award was all the more meaningful this year since the Oct. 29 race came after devastating earthquakes in September. (rtr)

Sp rt Leaders Manchester City go 11 points clear on derby day LONDON - Manchester City beat Manchester United 2-1 at Old Trafford to go 11 points clear at the top of the Premier League on Sunday while Liverpool and Everton drew 1-1 in a snowswept Merseyside derby at Anfield.City’s victory marked the first time a team have won 14 consecutive English top-flight games in the same season and ended United’s run of 40 home games unbeaten in all competitions. Pep Guardiola’s side took the lead in the 43rd minute through David Silva but poor defending allowed United to hit back immediately with Marcus Rashford grabbing an equaliser before the break. Nicolas Otamendi volleyed in the winner on the half-turn nine minutes into the second half. City now have 46 points from 16 games, with United staying second on 35, and look like the title is theirs to lose even if Guardiola was not about to get carried away. “We won because we were better. We are still in December, if we have 11 points (lead) when we play the second derby in April then maybe I will tell you that we have the title,” said the Spaniard. Champions Chelsea, who lost 1-0 at relegation-threatened West Ham United on Saturday, are third on 32 points with Liverpool squandering a chance to overtake them and staying fourth on 30. Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp fumed after his side’s draw, with Everton’s former England captain Wayne Rooney equalising from the penalty spot after a sensational first-half goal by Mohamed Salah. “The other team was not even in our box, I don’t know if they had a shot on target apart from the penalty. To give them an open door like this, in my understanding, that’s not okay,” said Klopp. “There are greater catastrophes
on this planet than getting a point after a game like this but it feels not too good,” added the German. Salah’s 42nd-minute stunner sent the Egyptian clear of Tottenham Hotspur’s England striker Harry Kane as the league’s top marksman with 13 goals. Kane had scored twice in a 5-1 victory over Stoke City on Saturday. Rooney’s goal was his first in a Merseyside derby, a match he last featured in almost 14 years ago before moving to Manchester United. “It’s always nice scoring against Liverpool, whoever you’re playing for,” he said. GIROUD STRIKES In the day’s early match, Southampton and Arsenal also drew 1-1 with Charlie Austin putting the hosts ahead in the third minute at St Mary’s and Olivier Giroud heading in a late equaliser after coming on as a second-half substitute. It was the 17th time Giroud had scored as a substitute for Arsenal, equalling Norwegian Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s record with Manchester United for most goals scored off the bench for a single club. City dominated possession at Old Trafford, showing they have grit as well as class even if the performance was not a classic display of the manager’s attractive passing football.Jose Mourinho’s team
selection had suggested a more expansive approach, with Anthony Martial and Rashford supporting central striker Romelu Lukaku,
but the Portuguese was left with a bitter taste. “It is a significant distance,” he said of City’s lead, before being asked if his team could make it up. “I don’t know. I know we can win next Wednesday (against Bournemouth).” Like Klopp, Mourinho was also upset with the referee -- in this case for not awarding a penalty to his side in the 79th minute when Ander
Herrera went down in the box under pressure from Otamendi. “My first reaction is I feel sorry for referee Michael Oliver because he had a very good match but unfortunately he made an important mistake,” he said. “The result was made with a big penalty not given... Michael was unlucky because it was a clear penalty.”(rtr)
Suarez and Messi give Barca win as Atletico keep up chase VILA-REAL - Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi fired Barcelona to a 2-0 victory over 10-man Villarreal as the leaders won for the first time in three La Liga games to stay five points clear on Sunday, while Atletico Madrid edged Real Betis 1-0. Barca looked set for a third consecutive league draw as they created scant opportunities but they were presented with the advantage of an extra man when Villarreal midfielder Daniel Raba was given a straight red card for a wild, studs-up challenge on Sergio Busquets on the hour mark. Barca did not take long to cash in and Suarez broke the deadlock in the 72nd minute, rounding goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo to complete a move of quick passes by Messi, Jordi Alba and substitute Paco Alcacer. The visitors stretched their lead 11 minutes later with the help of a haphazard backpass from Victor Ruiz to Busquets, who played in Messi for his 14th league goal this campaign. Barca lead the standings on 39 points, five clear of second-placed Valencia and six ahead of Atletico in third, while champions Real Madrid are fourth on 31. Villarreal coach Javi Calleja
said the red card was unfair on his side. “We were playing well and managing the periods of the game but everything changed with the red card,” he told reporters. “From the sidelines it didn’t look like a red card and I’m certain that if it had been the other way round it wouldn’t have been a sending off. Raba has been punished for being a young guy.” Barca coach Valverde said the red card was fair and praised his side for taking advantage. “It looked a strong challenge to me and I think the player (Raba) realised it was an excessive challenge. The player was shocked and didn’t protest,” he said. “They were well positioned and closed down all the spaces. They were dangerous on the counter, it was a game that could have gone uphill for us but we got the job done.” Earlier, a goal by Saul Niguez racked up a third straight victory in La Liga for Atletico, who got an unconvincing win at Betis. The Spanish midfielder slid in at the back post to meet a low cross from Sime Vrsaljko to score the only goal of the match in the 30th minute, netting for the second game in a row.
Atletico, who were eliminated from the Champions League on Tuesday after a 1-1 draw at Chelsea, were without talismanic forward Antoine Griezmann and had only two shots on target and 26 percent of possession. Diego Simeone’s side survived a huge penalty appeal for a shove by Angel Correa on forward Cristian Tello shortly before Saul’s goal while Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak pulled off an impressive save from former Barca forward Tello in the home side’s best attempt of the second half. “Today we had very few chances and we were much more efficient. Our play was good, the result was better,” said Atletico coach Diego Simeone. “Betis forced us to play three different systems to get more comfortable on the pitch. The good thing is that we are tactically versatile and showed our defensive strength.” Midfielder Koke added: “Betis play spectacular football but we took advantage of the one shot we had and that’s football. We had a very intense week with our trip to London and it was important we won today so we can stay near the top.”(rtr)

Tigres take title after Monterrey miss late penalty MEXICO CITY - Tigres beat city rivals Monterrey 2-1 to win their sixth Mexican league title on Sunday but the home side will be upset at a missed penalty minutes from the end of an engrossing tie. The Apertura championship triumph, which followed Thursday’s 1-1 draw in the first leg, gave Tigres their third title in two years and coach
Ricardo ‘Tuca’ Ferretti his sixth winner’s medal. Monterrey took the lead after just two minutes when Dorlan Pabon’s shot went in off the post. Tigres, though, equalised after half an hour through Eduardo Vargas and five minutes later Francisco Meza headed home the winner. Aviles Hurtado should have levelled for Monterrey after 81

minutes but he missed from the spot. To make matters worse for the home side, they had Neri Cardozo sent off in injury time. The result was a major disappointment for Monterrey, who had the best attack and stingiest defence over the season and had put six past Atlas and five past Morelia in the previous two rounds.(rtr)

Swansea City midfielder Nathan Dyer said striker Wilfried Bony has had massive impact on the Premier League club since returning from a thigh injury last month. Bony has scored a goal in each of the club’s last two league games, including the winner in the 1-0 win over West Bromwich Albion last Saturday which snapped a seven-game winless streak. “He is still getting his fitness back but a fully fit Bony would be unstoppable,” Dyer told the
club’s website. (www.swanseacity.com). “He is a massive presence for us. His hold-up play is outstanding and we can get up the pitch a lot easier with him being there. “We know if we put the right ball into the box then he will be attacking it ... if we keep feeding him and giving him half chances then he will take them.” Bony has also been captain in the last four league matches and Ki Sung-yueng paid tribute to the Ivorian’s
leadership qualities after his late goal lifted the Welsh side off the bottom of the table. “It was a big moment from a big player,” the South Korean midfielder said. “He is the captain and a big leader for this team. It has taken a little time because he has been injured, but now he has played more games he is starting to get confidence and score again.” Swansea host league leaders Manchester City at the Liberty Stadium on Wednesday.(rtr)

Wiggins’ rowing debut ends in disappointment

(rtr)

(kmb)

Grocery stock enough for next four days
Elderly and child refugees need mattresses
AMLAPURA - Grocery needs for refugees in Rendang subdistrict remain adequate for up to four days. For people wishing to donate, they are expected to donate folding mattresses for the elderly and children. Coordinator of Logistics for Rendang UPTD Refugee Station, I Wayan Sudiarta, said that grocery stock for refugees at 49 points in Rendang sub-district remains adequate for the next four days. The remaining stock in the post includes rice, sugar, coffee, instant noodles, kitchen spices, cooking oil and others. “Grocery stock for the next four days stays adequate. This afternoon, 12 tons of rice will arrive,” he said. Sudiarta revealed that after distributing the stocks to refugees, two days later he will propose grocery stocks to the Tanah Ampo Main Post. For donors wishing to donate, they can donate mattress or folding mattress for the elderly and children. “Many donors have provided direct assistance to the posts,” he added. He said that currently refugees can consume drinking water directly from readyto-drink water machine installed by SAI Rescue. Sudiarta added the water taken from the source is filtered through four stages. “So, in the tube four the water has been purified from particles and sterilized. It is ready for consumption,” he said. Ni Kadek Ita, a refugee, admitted the provision of ready-to-drink water equipment is very helpful. “Previously, drinking water aid is in the form of bottled mineral water. Now, the drinking water can be taken directly,” she explained. (kmb41)

(rtr)

Within the past two years, they have been entrepreneurs producing and selling incense stick independently.
