Vanished China star Fan last in ‘social responsibility’ ranking

BEIJING - China’s highest paid movie star Fan Bingbing, who has not been seen in public since July, was placed last in an academic report ranking A-list celebrities on their social responsibility. The 36-year-old actress has been a household name in China for years and tasted Hollywood success with a role in the 2014 blockbuster “X-Men: Days of Future Past”. Last year, she topped Forbes magazine’s list of top-earning Chinese celebrities with income of 300 million yuan ($43 million). But she has gone quiet in recent months, following allegations of tax evasion. In the report by Beijing Normal University published earlier this month, 100 Chinese stars including popular actor Jackie Chan and award-winning actress Zhang Ziyi were ranked according to their professional work, charity work and personal integrity. But with a pass requiring a score of more than 60 percent, only nine celebrities made the cut, with Chi-

nese actor Xu Zheng topping the list at 78 percent. Fan had a score of zero. The report’s authors said they studied the celebrities’ behaviour to assess the extent of their social responsibility but did not elaborate how they arrived at the results, saying that the findings were based on “research and web-scraping”. The ranking has split fans online, with many jumping to Fan’s defence. “What kind of a report is this? Fan has done so much good work in the past!” one user wrote on the Twitter-like Weibo platform. Fan has been unusually quiet in recent months -- with no new posts to her normally active personal Weibo account since May -- amid speculation about her whereabouts. The actress’s troubles began when Cui Yongyuan, a former presenter for state-run China Central Television (CCTV), posted purported contracts online in May that suggested she had received under-the-table payments. Ivorian rapper Bop de Narr

Ivorian rap has rising star in sardonic Bop de Narr

ABIDJAN - Boycotted by radio shows for being too provocative but piling up hits on Ivory Coast’s social media for nailing facts of life, the young rapper’s latest song has a bite. Sex, money, social injustice -- Bop de Narr tackles head-on any aspect of society that strikes him as in need of comment, but he does so with a subversive turn of mind and rare humour. His very stage name is provocative for those who remember late French mercenary boss Bob Denard, the manager of several coups in post-colonial Africa who died in 2007. Feigning ignorance, the 24-year-old rapper says he was known as “Bop” in his teens, while “Narr” is just an abbreviation of the word “narration”, adopted in homage to poetry slam gigs and performances. In his hit “C’est Payant” (At A Price), he names a number of “actresses” -- models or former beauty pageant winners and others -- who are targets of allegations that their careers are boosted by their dealings with powerful men. “We all know that it comes at a price, I’m simply telling the truth / As for he who wants to insult me, I’m going to tell him, ‘You’re as stupid as a nightclub that doesn’t open on Saturday’.” In “Vilain” (Ugly), De Narr last year set his sights on wealthy men, particularly famous football stars. “Money, car, house, can a woman tell you you’re ugly? / She’s going to be serious with you even if your looks are a joke.” Mocking the rich helps to express the frustration of young Ivorians who are penniless and out of work at a time of mass unemployment, when they can barely consider setting up home and family. “I describe my environment, I sing what there is around me. Sex and money are two themes that are very prominent in Ivorian society. Here, everything is based on money, showing off, bling-bling! I denounce, I criticise,” says De Narr, though he does not consider himself an activist. (afp)

Former soccer great Diego Maradona sings with his team and fans in stands, during a training session on the pitch at the Dorados de Sinaloa soccer club stadium, after Maradona was presented as the new manager of the Dorados in Culiacan, Mexico, Monday, Sept. 10, 2018.

Maradona seeks rebirth in Mexican club

Argentine legend Diego Maradona described his decision to coach second-division Mexican club Dorados as a rebirth after years battling addictions, as he officially became the team’s new manager Monday. Maradona, who has publicly struggled with drug addiction, alcoholism and obesity, raised eyebrows with the decision to accept a job in the heart of Mexican drug cartel country -- the rough-andtumble state of Sinaloa. But in his first press conference for Dorados, he described the job as a healthy new beginning after a long “sickness,” alluding to the excesses of his past. “I want to give Dorados what I lost when I was sick,” he told the 200 journalists who packed the hotel confer-

ence room in Culiacan, the state capital, where he was officially presented as the struggling club’s new coach. “I was sick for 14 years. Now I want to see the sun, I want to go to bed at night. I never even used to go to bed. I didn’t even know what a pillow was. That’s why I accepted the offer from Dorados,” he said. Mexico was the scene of Maradona’s greatest triumph as a player: leading Argentina to the 1986 World Cup title -- almost singlehandedly, according to some. But he surprised the football world

with his decision to coach a seconddivision team who are currently in 13th place in their 15-team league. Jokes soon broke out online about his choice of destination: Sinaloa is perhaps best known as home to the drug cartel of the same name. And Dorados are owned by a politically powerful family, the Hank clan, that has been accused of links to drug trafficking. Maradona, however, insisted his focus is on football, calling this “the best moment in my life.” “I want to spend a long time” at Dorados, he said. “People can say a lot of things, but... I was heading downhill, I was eating myself up, it was a step backward, and football is a step forward. All that changed thanks to my daughters.”

He recounted an oft-told story, of how his youngest daughter once spoke to him when he was in a coma, asking him to live -- and convincing him to change his ways. It is a story he has been telling for more than a decade. - Sorry Evo, sorry Nicolas -

Maradona, 57, grinned as he accepted a Dorados jersey with his old number 10 on it, and joked with journalists that he was ready to “sing any song you want me to.” Framed by two giant photos of himself during his playing days, he also said he had turned down offers from the leftist presidents of Bolivia and Venezuela, his pals Evo Morales and Nicolas Maduro,

to coach their national teams. After a 10-minute speech and 15 minutes taking questions -- his speech slightly slurred and his statements sometimes fuzzy -- Maradona headed to Dorados stadium to preside over his first practice. On the way, he uploaded a video to his Instagram account in which he thanked his fans and said, “Long live the Church of Maradona.” (afp) News can also be heard in “Bali Image” at Global Radio FM 96.5 from 9.30 until 10.00 am.
