Woodley, Elgort among Teen Choice Awards winners Associated Press

LOS ANGELES — Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort of “The Fault in Our Stars” rode a victorious wave at the Teen Choice Awards. The actors were honored with several prizes at Sunday’s fan-favorite extravaganza, including choice drama movie actor and breakout movie star for Elgort and choice drama and action movie actress for “Divergent” star Woodley. The pair was also awarded the surfboard-shaped trophy for choice movie lip-lock for their “Fault in Our Stars” smooch.

“I don’t surf or anything, so I guess I’m gonna put this on my wall,” said Elgort of the unique prize.

Demi Lovato kicked off the Teen Choice Awards with a performance and a win.

After belting out her tune “Really Don’t Care,” the singer-actress surfed away with

awards for choice summer song and choice female summer music star. Lovato used her acceptance speech to pump up the crowd of mostly roaring teenagers.

“I want you guys to know that instead of just getting up here and saying a speech, every single one of you deserves to have a happy and incredible life, so be the best you can be in everything because your dreams can come true if you work hard for them,” beamed Lovato.

Teen Choice Awards co-hosts Tyler Posey of “Teen Wolf” and Sarah Hyland of “Modern Family” said 165 million votes were cast online for the 16th annual awards, which honor movies, television, music, comedy, sports, fashion and Web stars in such silly categories as choice hottie, smile and villain, which went to “The Hunger Games” heavy Donald Sutherland.

“You named me the most villainous?”

asked Sutherland, who showed up to the casual ceremony in a tuxedo. “My wife — I have been married for 42 years — my wife asked me to tell you that she agreed with you.” Other winners on hand to claim their trophies included “Pretty Little Liars” star Lucy Hale as choice drama TV show actress, “The Hunger Games” co-star Josh Hutcherson as choice sci-fi/fantasy movie actor and Bethany Mota and Tyler Oakley as choice female and male Web stars.

Zendaya, Ariana Grande and Kevin Hart were among the other stars who showed up to accept awards at the boisterous ceremony, which featured performances from the groups Magic and Rixton.

Jason Derulo closed out the show with a performance of his song “Talk Dirty,” which featured the choice male summer music star winner dancing on top of a police car on stage.

LOS ANGELES - “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” romped to the top of the US box office, dethroning “Guardians of the Galaxy” in their first weekend in theaters, industry figures showed Sunday.

The fighting turtles, on a mission to save New York from the clutches of evil-doers, made off with $65 million in receipts, industry tracker Exhibitor Relations said.

Starring Megan Fox, the latest reboot of the Ninja Turtle franchise handily overtook “Guardians of the Galaxy,” which dropped to number two with a $41.5 million gross following a stellar $94 million debut the weekend before.

disaster flick “Into the Storm” a distant third with an $18 million take at the box office its first weekend out.

French action film “Lucy,” starring Scarlett Johansson as a drug mule with telekinetic powers, was fifth with $9.3 million in its third week in theaters.

featuring struggling dancers in a televised contest in Las Vegas. It grossed $6.5 million its first week in theaters.

Seventh place with $5.7 went to “Hercules”, starring Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson. “Get On Up,” a biopic about US soul singer James Brown, dropped to eighth place from third, bringing in $5 million its second weekend out.

“Dawn of the Planet of the Apes,” the critically praised latest installment in the sci-fi film series about apes co-existing with humans, drew $4.4 million for ninth place.

Disney’s “Planes: Fire & Rescue,” the computer-animated movie about a talking plane that helps firefighters save a national park, made $2.4 million, leaving it in tenth place.

New president urged to invoke presidential regulation Bali Post

DENPASAR - Balinese people coalesced into the Forum of Balinese People Rejecting Reclamation (ForBALI) required the elected president to cancel the Presidential Regulation No.51/2014. The demand was a form of disappointment of Balinese people against the presidential decision having made revision against the allocation of most coastal areas and small islands belonging to a part of Benoa Bay area.

Coordinator of the ForBALI, Wayan Suardana alias Gendo, expected the newly elected president to revoke the Presidential Regulation legalizing the reclamation in Benoa Bay conservation area. “We cannot expect SBY because he is

the actor fully getting involved in the reclamation of Benoa Bay who issued the Presidential Regulation,” he explained.

Gendo openly asked Joko Widodo to invoke the Presidential Regulation having revised the spatial plan

of Denpasar, Badung, Gianyar and Tabanan after serving as president.

“Whether Jokowi later on meets or not, it will highly depend on him if he believes or not in the power of the people,” he said amidst the oration.

The action of ForBALI with the community to voice their aspirations to reject the reclamation began at 10:20 in the morning by taking the route around the Bajra Sandhi Monument, Friday (Aug 8). SEMARAPURA - The activity of ‘Smarapura Skate Fest’ in a series with the 69th celebration of the Indonesia’s Independence Day reaped severe protest from community leaders, Sunday (Aug 10). It happened because the activity was even centered near the catus pata or central intersection the monument. Even, in the west of the monument was built a stage of music performance distancing the catus pata monument. Actually, this location is known to be sacred and often used as the venue of the Hindu religious ceremonies.

A community leader of Klungkung, Dewa Soma, when contacted on Sunday deplored because the celebration even took place around the catus pata monument. Actually, the town of Semarapura itself had owned the Puputan Square as central venue to organize any entertainment equipped with a stage. Philosophically, he assessed the central intersection area was a sacred place, just like the central point of the state, symbolizing the balance of universe.

Thus, it was often used to organize various rituals and exorcism rites. He asserted that if it was used as a venue of entertainment, it would affect the sanctity. “Existence of the central intersection must be understood.

We’ve known its function, but we undermine the sanctity alone. Please be distinguished, which one is for the sake of religion and entertainment purposes,” he said.

According to him, as long as it was used for religious and ceremonial activities such as development parade or the like, it was considered legitimate. However, if it was used for entertainment stage, he considered it less elegant and tarnished the sanctity of catus pata. He hoped that

more people could understand about the catus pata so that it would not be used for activities that could tarnish the sanctity of catus pata.

Similar opinion was also revealed by another community leader, Wayan Sutena. He appreciated the presence of creativity by young people in conjunction with the Independence Day of the Republic of Indonesia.

However, as Hindu people should be able to distinguish between the sacred place and the place worth using for entertainment. Actually, the catus pata was lately used as location to organize caru labuh gentuh ritual. Moreover, last Sunday coinciding with full moon, many Hindus worshipped around the catus pata.

“Lately, it was just used for holding ritual. It is now even used for the stage of entertainment and distancing the catus pata. I think it very outrageous,” he said. In addition, the entertainment stage was also disturbing because it disrupted the comfort of residents due to noises from morning to night.

Besides, it also closed the main road access from the east to the west. If the reason was due to requiring a highway as the track of activities, it would be better to hold it in front of

the entrance gates or behind the stage of Puputan Klungkung Square. Moreover, it could be centered directly near the Puputan Klungkung Square by preparing skate board track. Sutena also questioned about the permit of the activity held in the west of the catus pata whereas it clearly belonged to a sacred place.

Chairperson of the organizing committee, Nova Cahya, admitted not to know if the catus pata belonged to sacred zone. The committee set the entertainment stage in the west of catus pata after making coordination with the National Sports Committee (KONI) of Klungkung. “This event is held to commemorate the anniversary of the Indonesia’s Independence Day. We’re just a part of some activities held by the KONI,” she explained.

by KONI Klungkung as partner of sport activities. Actually, her party just wanted to provide a place for young children as quite a lot of the skate board lovers in Klungkung. TABANAN - To anticipate the entry of radical groups into Tabanan County, Tabanan Police and the 1619/Tabanan Military District Command conducted a sweeping to a number of boarding and rented houses, Saturday night (Aug 9). Although the sweeping did not get any indication leading to the involvement of radical movement such as the network group of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), the activity could ensnare at least 49 migrants that did not complete themselves with required documents.

The joint raid began at 8:00 p.m. where the officers searched a number of locations until dawn by targeting the areas of migrants from various regions, especially the boarding and rented houses.

All this time, the boarding and rented houses were supposed to be the hiding place of radical groups. Even, rented house owners did not carefully check the occupants. Thus, it was required an intensive examination by police as a form of vigilance.

Some locations searched included Jalan Pulau Nias and Jalan Rajawali at Dauh Peken village, Tabanan subdistrict as well as Gubug village, Tabanan.

“The migrant enforcement activities are meant to anticipate the movement of radical groups,” said Chief of Tabanan Police, Dekananto Eko Purwono, Sunday (Aug 10).

The joint raid led by the Operations Division Head of Tabanan Police, AA Rai Laba, were involved 55 personnel from various units in the Tabanan Police, Town Police and personnel of the 1619/Tabanan Military District Command.

Based on examination to hundreds of migrants at a number of locations in the town of Tabanan, the officers found at least 49 violations. Where, 43 of them did not have seasonal resident certificate and 6 others had expired identity card. Similarly, from the sweeping at different locations at Gubug village, Tabanan subdistrict, of the 150 people examined, 12 people were found having no seasonal resident certificate and five others showed expired identity card, so that a total 17 violations were found.

It was known that based on in-depth examination to hundreds of migrants after the Eid holidays, there were no indications leading to the involvement of radical movements such as the ISIS. They were the nomads coming to Bali to change their fate by looking for a job opportunity, but did not equip themselves with complete identity documents.

From the initial examination, police did not find any residents of boarding and rented houses included in the network of radical groups, especially the ISIS. However, his party would continue to monitor and detect as early as possible so as the ISIS network could no develop. “We will continue to monitor,” affirmed Dekananto. (kmb28)

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

LOS ANGELES — Sending heavier vehicles and, eventually, humans to Mars requires first testing new technologies to see if they actually work.

But it’s infeasible to conduct experiments on the red planet, so to mimic Mars’ low-density atmosphere, NASA sent a saucerlike test vehicle high above the Earth.

NASA engineers announced Friday that the June mission’s main objective was met: The vehicle, called the Low Density Supersonic Decelerator, flew to 190,000 feet (57,900 meters) at more than four times the speed of sound and simulated Martian landing conditions.

“The vehicle did an amazing job of getting to the right speed and altitude,” said Ian Clark, principal investigator at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

The experimental flight, which cost about $150 million and was conducted from the U.S. Navy’s Pacific Missile Range Facility on Kauai, Hawaii, was intended as a dry run for two more tests scheduled for next year.

One of the technologies NASA engineers tested is an inflatable, doughnut-shaped ring around the edge of the saucer-like vehicle that deploys like a puffer fish in one-third of a second, slowing the vehicle. In the test run, the saucer went from traveling at Mach 4.3 — more than four times the speed of sound — to a breezy Mach 2, making the inflatable device a success, NASA engineers said.

The second technology is a

100-foot-wide (30-meter-wide) parachute, which virtually disintegrated the moment it was released. In the months ahead, NASA will try to figure out how to properly deploy the parachute, Clark said.

“The idea of taking 200 pounds of Kevlar and nylon and deploying it at 2,500 mph, 200 pounds that inflated would be the size of a small warehouse, is certainly a challenging endeavor. There’s a lot of physics with this problem that we’re now gaining new insights into that we’ve never had before,” Clark said. “And we’re going to take all of that knowledge, and feed it toward our flights next year.”

GAILLAC - A group of wine cooperatives in southwest France has joined forces with leading scientists to “liberate” the flavours most prized by consumers in growing wine markets, from China to the US. In a bid to bring out the fruitiness enjoyed by many new wine drinkers, the Vinneo project has been developing the blackcurrant aroma of the Fer Servadou grape variety and the violet aroma of the Negrette variety.

Since 2009 it has been working with scientists on technologies to develop a range of varietal wines -- ones made from a single-named type of grape -- to appeal to the palates of consumers worldwide.

“We didn’t want to make the wine our grandfather would have made.

We wanted to make the wine our grandfather would have made if he could,” Vinovalie director Jacques Tranier told AFP. Vinovalie, which is leading the projects, is a group of four major cooperative wineries in southwest France. They represent the appellations of Gaillac, Fronton and Cahors and are one of the area’s largest producers of red and rose wines, along with a small amount of white.

For too long, Tranier said, French winemaking had “overplayed the return to tradition” while at the same time ignoring innovation -- to the detriment of the industry.

In particular, he believes French winemakers have neglected the fruity flavours enjoyed by newer wine drinkers in fast-growing markets such as Asia, and which are often found in New World wines.

“We used to think that the whole world revolved around French wine,” Tranier said.

“At the beginning of the 2000s that orthodoxy collapsed. We realised all of a sudden that we had competition,” he added.

The project -- run in conjunction with researchers at the National Polytechnic Institute of Toulouse (INP) and the French Vine and Wine Institute (IFV) -- now appears to be bearing fruit.

Vinovalie exports have tripled over the last five years from two to six million euros ($2.6 to $8 million).

The growth comes as global consumption of wine is on the rise, driven by a growing taste for the tipple in Asia and particularly China, now the world’s biggest consumer of red wine.

Between 2008 and 2012, the amount of wine drunk around the world increased by 3.23 percent, and that is expected to climb by another 4.97 percent by 2017, according to a study by Vinexpo and the British International Wine and Spirit Research think-tank.

In the United States, which has been the world’s top consumer of wine since 2011, red wine consumption is expected to jump 14 percent in the next five years.

placed in the yard or back of the house. In terms of selling price, red guava and crystal guava are sold for IDR 15,000 each kilogram.

Meanwhile, the bearing-fruit nursery transplant is sold for 200,000. At the moment, this kind of guava is widely cultivated in Petang, chiefly at Semana hamlet, Plaga village as well as the Penikit and Sekar Mukti hamlet, Belok Sidan village. About 150 farmers coalesced into the group have cultivated around 17,000 plants. The nursery transplants are brought in from Majalengka, West Java. “Armed with such nursery

Christophe Haunold, of the INP, said it was important to preserve the character of the Vinovalie grapes -- Malbec, Fer Servadou, Loin de l’oeil (also known as Len de l’El) and Negrette -- while ensuring both quality and quantity.

“That required a lot of science and technology,” he said.

“We sought to identify complex molecules, precursors of particular flavours... which appear and disappear depending on maturity to refine the optimal harvest time,” he added.

INP used sophisticated chromatography -- a laboratory technique that involves separating mixtures -- to map the chemical identity of the different grapes and understand how the molecules that develop taste and aroma evolve during the vinification process.

Researchers also looked at the effect of heating grapes for different lengths of time and to different temperatures using a technique called “Flash Detente”.

The process involves heating the grapes to about 82 degrees C (180 degrees F) before placing them in a huge vacuum chamber, where they are cooled.

The cells of the grape skins burst from the inside, making it easier to extract the tannins, a key element in developing the character of a wine.

So far Vinovalie has concentrated on two international brands -Astrolabe and Terreo -- but another research project is also planned for 2015.

Such processes are decried by some traditionalists and must be carried out precisely: the prized blackcurrant aroma can swiftly turn to green pepper if not properly treated.

Foreigner questions about security in Bali Bali Post

DENPASAR - An Italian couple, Sebastian, 60, and his wife Rinaldi, 60, questioned about the security condition in Bali. He was snatched on Thursday night (Aug 7) in Seminyak, Legian, Kuta, around 11:30.

Unfortunately, the case was not reported to police on the pretext that snatching case would be difficult to be captured.

On Saturday (Aug 9), Sebastian who had been visiting Bali since 15 years ago told reporters that what happened to him was a tragedy and indicated that Bali, especially Kuta tourist area, was no longer safe.

After having dinner and when passing through the street in Seminyak tourist area, Sebastian piggybacking his wife was verged and the bag carried by her wife was snatched by two men riding a motorcycle.

When the bag was snatched, the victim was attempting to defend to the strap broke. Unfortunately, the culprit was more violent and powerful enough so that the bag containing cellular phone and documents of their holiday in Bali, money and other goods could be taken away.

“I had pursued the culprits on Jalan Kunti but could not found them,” he said disappointedly. Over the incident, the victim’s wife was also disappointed.

“Bali is no longer safe, unlike previous years. I have regularly

visited Bali every holiday since 15 years ago. Now, the security for tourists and perhaps for local residents, too, should get the attention of police. Without immediate handling, this could tarnish the image of Bali in the eyes of international community,” criticized the travelers having the profession as teacher in his home country.

The traveler staying at Shushi Bungalow on Jalan Popies Kuta claimed to still be grateful because the rope of her bag broke. Otherwise, she would fall from the motorcycle. “To me, the lost bag is not a problem, but the information in cellular phone and documents during the holidays in various countries recorded in the camera are very valuable,” said Sebastian. Seoul calls for high-level talks with North Korea Associated Press

SEOUL — South Korea on Monday proposed high-level talks with rival North Korea next week to discuss resuming reunions of Korean War-divided families, a proposal that could lead to the easing of tensions after months of North Korean missile tests and heated rhetoric from both countries.

The South Korean Unification Ministry said in a statement that it suggested meeting Aug. 19 on the North Korean side of the truce border village of Panmunjom. There was no immediate response from Pyongyang.

The ministry said it hoped to focus on possible family reunions over Chuseok, a major holiday celebrated in both countries that falls on Sept. 8. It also wants to discuss other issues of “mutual interest,” but a ministry official, who would speak only on condition of anonymity, citing department rules, couldn’t elaborate.

The Koreas last had a high-level meeting in February. Since then, North Korea has conducted an unusually large number of missile and artillery tests. Pyongyang also has insulted South Korea’s leader, calling her a prostitute, and expressed fury over U.S.-South Korean military drills.

The latest round of annual joint drills between the allies is set to take place in the next week or so, though officials have not released an exact starting date. North Korea’s official news agency has called the upcoming drills “extremely reckless and dangerous war maneuvers” and threatened regular “counter actions.” Washington and Seoul say the drills are routine and defensive in nature.

The most recent family reunions were held over six days in February, and were the first such meetings in more than three years. South Korean analysts say authoritarian North Korea allows only infrequent reunions for fear of losing an important bargaining chip in efforts to win badly needed aid and concessions.

The Korean Peninsula is technically in a state of war because the Korean War ended in 1953 with an armistice, not a peace treaty. Millions of families were separated by that conflict. The Koreas are now divided by the world’s most heavily fortified border.

CAIRO — An Egyptian-brokered ceasefire halting the Gaza war held into Monday morning, allowing Palestinians to leave homes and shelters as negotiators agreed to resume talks in Cairo.

The truce took effect just after midnight (2101 GMT), preceded by heavy rocket fire toward Israel. In Cairo, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said the cease-fire would allow humanitarian aid into battered Gaza neighborhoods and the reopening of indirect talks on a more lasting and comprehensive deal.

On Monday morning, high school students in Gaza filed the streets as they headed off to pick up their graduation certificates after the Education Ministry said they’d be ready.

People waited to buy fuel for generators as power and communication workers struggled to fix cables damaged in the fighting. Long lines formed at ATMs. In Cairo, negotiators said talks would resume at 11 a.m. (0800 GMT). The fourmember Israeli delegation arrived at Cairo International Airport earlier Monday morning.

The monthlong war, pitting the Israeli military against rocket-firing Hamas militants, has killed more than 1,900 Palestinians, the majority civilians, Palestinian and U.N. officials say.

In Israel, 67 people have been killed, all but three of them soldiers, officials there say.

The fighting ended in a three-day cease-

fire last Tuesday. Egypt had hoped to use that truce to mediate a long-term deal. But when it expired, militants resumed their rocket fire, sparking Israeli reprisals. The violence continued throughout the weekend, including a burst of fighting late Sunday ahead of the expected cease-fire.

Last week’s talks failed in part because Israel rejected Hamas’ demand for a complete end to the blockade of the Gaza Strip, enforced by Egypt and Israel. Israel says the closure is necessary to prevent arms smuggling, and officials do not want to make any concessions that would allow Hamas to declare victory.

The blockade has greatly limited the movement of Palestinians in and out of the impoverished territory of 1.8 million people for jobs and schooling. It has also limited the flow of goods into Gaza and blocked virtually all exports. Unemployment there is more than 50 percent.

Bassam Salhi, a Palestinian delegation member, said he was optimistic ahead of Monday’s talks.

“We hope to reach a deal within the 72 hours, based on ending the blockade and opening the crossings,” Salhi said.

Israeli officials had walked away from negotiations over continued fire from Gaza.

“Israel will not negotiate under fire,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said earlier Sunday, warning that his country’s military

campaign “will take time.”

The current Gaza war escalated from the abduction and killing of three Israeli teens in the West Bank in June. Israel blamed the killings on Hamas and launched a massive arrest campaign, rounding up hundreds of its members in the West Bank. Hamas and other militants unleashed rocket fire from Gaza. killed a suspected Palestinian militant early Monday morning in the West Bank village of Qabalan, south of Nablus. Palestinian medical officials identified the dead man as Zakariah al-Aqrah, 21.

Jobs growth has lagged profits, revenues Reuters

WASHINGTON - Employment growth at the largest U.S. companies has lagged far behind increases in revenue and operating profit since the start of the century, as firms reaped the benefits of globalization, technology, and other ways to operate more productively, according to a Reuters analysis of corporate data.

From 2001 to 2013, inflationadjusted revenue at 100 of the largest publicly traded companies

grew 71 percent and inflationadjusted operating profit rose 150 percent. Global headcount reported

globally than overall employment in the United States, but it is unclear from corporate disclosures how much of the hiring took place outside the United States.

Information from individual companies suggests a lot of the new jobs were created overseas, especially given that in this period there was offshoring and outsourcing of work that was done previously in-house and in the U.S. There was also substantial growth in sales in foreign markets and a resulting expansion of operations overseas.

The data highlight a central question that officials in the Obama administration and at the U.S. Federal Reserve confront: has the nation’s ability to generate well-paying jobs in manufacturing and other sectors been fundamentally scarred by changes in the global economy that may predate the 2008-2009 economic crisis but were more starkly revealed in its aftermath. The answer could have major implications for economic policy decisions, such as how long the Fed keeps interest rates at very low levels to stimulate jobs growth.

At the Fed, Chair Janet Yellen has spoken of the steady drift in national income “away from labor and towards capital,” while some policymakers worry the full depth of the changes are not yet clear.

“We have to understand what structurally is going on ... Is the country really changing in a fundamental way?” Atlanta Federal Reserve Bank President Dennis Lockhart said last month, citing the possibility that “polarized labor markets” could become entrenched.

That would mean a workforce based

on large numbers of lower paid workers, with a few highly paid managers, professional and technology workers, and a permanent hollowing out of the middle class.

This would be a potential drag on overall purchasing power and economic growth.

Data on the 150 publicly traded companies with the largest sales was collected from Thomson Reuters’ Eikon system. Banks and financial firms were excluded because the way they report results isn’t comparable to other companies and to tie the analysis more closely to the production of goods and services.

Several companies, such as energy investment company Energy Transfer Equity, were excluded because their records did not extend back far enough or were complicated by corporate maneuvers, such as breakups.

The resulting list of 100 large companies covers a range of industries, from consumer giants Wal-Mart and McDonalds , to old-line industrials such as Caterpillar and General Motors as well as technology giants like IBM and Microsoft.

Google was included but its public records did not include employee headcount for 2001 and 2002 and it declined to provide data for those years. The search company reported fulltime employment of 47,756 for 2013.

The collective headcount of the 100 fell in only one of the years included in the study, dropping 1.33 percent in 2009, the year in which the financial crisis and accompanying recession had the most savage impact.

Russia’s stocks soar after avoiding delisting

MOSCOW - The shares of Russia’s two biggest banks soared on Monday after avoiding being delisted from a top emerging markets index as part of the West’s response to the Kremlin’s stance in Ukraine.

The New York-based MSCI index provider decided on Friday to keep offering the shares of Sberbank and VTB to clients as long as the two Russian state-held giants did not issue any more stock.

VTB’s shares gained four percent and those of Sberbank rose

more than three percent in the opening minutes of trading on Moscow’s main exchange.

The Moscow stock market followed the banks’ lead higher and was up more than one percent while the ruble gained half a percent against both the dollar and euro.

Russian investors said they now expected the other main exchanges in Europe to follow New York’s lead and keep the two stocks.

“We believe that the risk of two of the heavyweight members of the MSCI Russia being excluded from the index was weighing on the broader Russian market last week,

and that the news will therefore provide some relief to the market,” VTB Group’s investment house said in a research note that stressed it may have a conflict of interest in the matter.

“The decision made by the MSCI pioneers the series of announcements expected from other index providers: S&P Down Jones Indices, Vienna Stock Exchange, and the FTSE,” VTB Capital said.

The MSCI Russia index is global traders’ preferred way to access a balanced package of paper that reflects the price of the main Moscowissued stocks.

MSCI was under pressure to drop the two finance houss as part of a sanctions package unleashed against Russia’s financial and defence and high technologies sectors over the Kremlin’s perceived backing of insurgents in eastern Ukraine.

The index provider said in a statement that it reached its decision after a series of “consultation with the investment community” over concerns that the two banks were now prohibited from issuing new shares on the US and European markets.

MSCI said in had decided not to

raise the weight of the two stocks in its Russia index should the banks ignore the restrictions and proceed with a share issue in order to raise more capital.

“Both Sberbank and VTB Bank have officially announced that they do not intend to issue new shares in the near future,” MSCI said.

It added that it would weigh its decision again should VTB and Sberbank announce plans to issue new stock.

Traders said that a delisting threatened to accelerate the pace of investors’ capital outflows from Russia.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the Bulfest and BEC 2014 Organizing Committee, Gede Suyasa, said the potential of endek was promising if craftsmen, buyer to designers were able to develop endek to go global. “If there are visitors getting interested in the work of designers made of endek fabric, it

is certainly helpful and the main attraction in the community,” he said when closing the Bulfest and BEC 2014.

He said that other than used for fashion need, the endek fabric could also be taken

INDONESIA Two French journalists still questioned by Papua’s immigration

MADRID — Spain has imported a U.S.-made experimental Ebola drug to treat a Spanish missionary priest who was evacuated from Liberia last week after testing positive for the killer virus.

The Health Ministry announced Monday that the ZMapp drug, made by Mapp Biopharmaceutical Inc. of San Diego, was obtained in Geneva this weekend and brought to Madrid to treat Miguel Pajares.

The 75-year-old priest was evacuated from Liberia and placed in isolation Thursday at Madrid’s Carlos III Hospital.

There is no known cure or licensed treatment for Ebola, which has killed more than 1,000 people in the current outbreak in West Africa. The World Health Organization has declared the Ebola outbreak an international health emergency and urged nations worldwide to donate resources to battle the disease.

Two Americans diagnosed with Ebola in Liberia and evacuated back to the United States have been treated with the drug.

One of them, Dr. Kent Brantly, said last week that his condition was improving and the husband of the aid worker being treated with Brantly said the same thing.

Both are being treated in isolation at an Atlanta hospital.

The ethical questions surrounding experimental Ebola drugs and vaccines were being debated Monday during a tele-

conference of medical ethicists and other experts organized by WHO. At least one country in West Africa has expressed interest; Nigeria’s health minister, Onyenbuchi Chukwu, said at a news conference last week that he had asked U.S. health officials about access but was told the manufacturer would have to agree.

Dr. Tom Frieden, director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said “there are virtually no doses available,” a CDC spokesman said last week, before the announcement that Spain was also using the drug.

Because the ZMapp drug has never been tested in humans, scientists say there’s no way to tell if it has made any difference to the two American aid workers who have so far received it.

The drug is a mixture of three antibodies engineered to recognize Ebola and bind to infected cells so the immune system can kill them. Scientists culled antibodies from laboratory mice and ZMapp’s maker now grows the antibodies in tobacco plants and then purifies them. It takes several months to even produce a modest amount of the drug.

CANANDAIGUA, New York — The collision was as common as any in racing. Kevin Ward Jr.’s car spun twice like a top, wheels hugging the wall, before it plopped backward on the dimly lit dirt track.

In a sport steeped with bravado, what happened next was another familiar, but treacherous, move: Wearing a black firesuit and black helmet, the 20-yearold Ward unbuckled himself, climbed out of the winged car into the night and defiantly walked onto the track at Canandaigua Motorsports Park.

He gestured, making his dis-

gust evident with the driver who triggered the wreck with a bump: three-time NASCAR champion Tony Stewart.

Ward, a relative unknown compared to NASCAR’s noted swashbuckler, was nearly hit by another passing car as he pointed with his right arm in Stewart’s direction. As he confronted Stewart in his passing car, disaster struck.

Ward was standing to the right of Stewart’s familiar No. 14 car, which seemed to fishtail from the rear and hit him. According to video and witness accounts, Ward’s body was sucked underneath the car and hurtled through the air before landing on his back

as fans looked on in horror.

Ward was killed. Stewart, considered one of the most proficient drivers in racing, dropped out of Sunday’s NASCAR race at Watkins Glen, hours after Saturday’s crash.

And the sport was left reeling from a tragedy that could have ripple effects from the biggest stock car series down to weeknight dirt track racing.

“There aren’t words to describe the sadness I feel about the accident that took the life of Kevin Ward Jr.,” Stewart said in a statement.

Authorities questioned the 43-year-old Stewart once on Saturday night and went to Wat-

kins Glen to talk to him again Sunday. They described him as “visibly shaken” after the crash and said he was cooperative.

On Sunday, Ontario County Sheriff Philip Povero said that investigators also don’t have any evidence at this point in the investigation to support criminal intent. But he also said that criminal charges have not been ruled out.

The crash raised several questions: Will Ward’s death cause drivers to think twice about on-track confrontations?

Did Stewart try and send his own message by buzzing Ward, the young driver, only to have his risky move turn fatal? Or

did Ward simply take his life into his own hands by stepping into traffic in a black firesutsuit on a dark track? The only one who may have that answer is Stewart.

David S. Weinsten, a former state and federal prosecutor in Miami who is now in private practice, said it would be difficult to prove criminal intent.

“I think even with the video, it’s going to be tough to prove that this was more than just an accident and that it was even culpable negligence, which he should’ve known or should’ve believed that by getting close to this guy, that it was going to cause the accident,” he said.

JAKARTA - The officials at Papua province’s immigration office are still interrogating two French journalists, Thomas Charles Danbois and Valentine Bourrat, for allegedly violating their stay permit in Papua.

“Both are being questioned separately by the immigration officials,” Chief of Papua province’s Immigration Office Garda Tampubolon stated on Monday.

With regard to the progress made in questioning, Tampubolon noted that he was not yet sure whether an administrative sanction will be imposed on the French journalists.

Tampubolon added that the officials from the French Embassy in Jakarta had requested to make contact with the two journalists. The embassy officials were keen to know the condition of their citizens, Tampubolon remarked.

It was earlier reported that two French journalists are being interrogated by the Papua Police for their alleged close relationship with a criminal armed group (KKB) in Jayawijaya, Papua.

“They are still being questioned. We have as yet not come to any conclusion (about their case),” Papua regional police command spokesman Senior Commissioner Sulistyo Pudjo stated when asked for confirmation about the issue.

The two journalists, Charles Thomas Tendeis (40) and Valentine Sailen (25), are believed to be lovers.

Charles has been arrested for holding a tourist visa but conducting activities of a journalist, such as interviewing supporters of the armed group believed to be part of the separatist Free Papua Movement (OPM) organization headquartered around Jayawijaya.

Jayawijaya police resort chief Adjunct Senior Commissioner Adolof Beay had earlier reported that Charles and his girlfriend had been arrested in an area in Wamena, Jayawijaya District, on Wednesday night.

The two were riding motorcycles along with local residents, which drew police attention, as the region was considered prone to shooting incidents by the KKB. The police then approached the foreigners and questioned their purpose and intention of being in a restricted area and traveling by motorcycles in the night.

“At first, they said they were tourists, but further questioning revealed that they were journalists. They were later arrested because they were holding tourist visas,” he pointed out.

Their claim to be tourists was logical, as since Thursday, the Baliem Valley Festival was being celebrated in the region for a week, he added.

He noted that the Jayawijaya police later referred the two French journalists to the Papua regional command for further investigation.

Senior Commissioner Sulistyo Pudjo noted that Charles possessed a press card issued by ART-TV, but it had expired in 2006.

“The person concerned confessed that he was a journalist and had a press card, but it had already expired in 2006. So, he is still under interrogation,” he added.

“Anywhere in any country the police have the right to question a foreigner involved in suspicious activities. So, the case will be framed using every piece of information gathered from him,” Pudjo emphasized.

He explained that any foreign journalist keen to carry out journalistic work, especially in the West Papua Province, must have a permit from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In July 2013, Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa had stated that the security situation in Papua was one of the country’s major concerns due to certain elements in the region seeking international attention by attacking international figures, including journalists.

Due to this reason, foreign journalists who seek to cover Papua must apply for a permit from the government, so that they can be provided adequate security to ensure their safety, he added.

TORONTO - Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga had one more surprise in his bag of upsets, beating second seeded Roger Federer 7-5 7-6 (3) to cap a scintillating march to the Rogers Cup title on Sunday.

After knocking off world number one Novak Djokovic in the third round, taking out twice champion and eighth seed Andy Murray in the quarters and seventh seed Grigor Dimitrov in the semis, Tsonga denied 17-time grand slam winner Federer a landmark 80th career title.

“I played well all this week, I beat many good guys,” said Tsonga.

“It’s a big achievement because I worked really hard to come back from my knee injury last year.

“Unfortunately there is no secret... behind this there is a lot of work.

“I’m waiting for this since couple of months now. I was looking for my best level, today I had it and it’s great.”

Certainly there was no disputing that Tsonga’s win was welldeserved, the 13th seeded Frenchman’s hit list including players who had won seven of the last 10 Canadian titles (Djokovic 2012, 2011, 2007; Murray 2010, 2009 and Federer 2004, 2006). It marked the first time since 2002 that a player had beaten the four top seeds to win a Masters series event.

“He beat great players along the way and backed it up with another great final,” said Federer, who

turned 33 on Friday and had been hoping to celebrate his birthday by lifting the trophy. “No excuses.

I think he played really solid and well when he had to. “I wish I could have played a bit better in the finals today.

“There were things I could have done better, but, overall it was a positive week. “I go away from this feeling good about my chances next week and also at the U.S. Open.”

In 16 career meetings Tsonga had beaten the Swiss maestro just five times but three came on the Canadian hard courts.

With Federer appearing in his fifth Canadian final and Tsonga having advanced to at least the semi-finals in three of his four trips to Canada, both men had a cool look of confidence as they walked onto a blazing hot centre court. In a week of superb performances, Tsonga may have saved his best for last,

the second seeded Swiss unable to manage a single break chance the entire match.

Federer did not allow Tsonga many break opportunities himself but the one he did, in the first set, was all the Frenchman needed converting the chance to clinch the set and a 1-0 lead.

Play remained tight in the second with no break points, the set going to a tie-break won by Tsonga, who took four straight points after the breaker had been deadlocked at 3-3 “What is achieved is achieved and I will just continue on this way, continue to work hard,” said Tsonga, when asked about his U.S. Open chances. “This win gives me a lot of hope for the rest of the year, of course. “But I will continue to do my work like I did last couple of months and I hope I will continue to win.”

ZURICH — Britain’s Mo Farah wants to underscore his status as the pre-eminent longdistance runner of his age with another 5,000-, 10,000-meter double at the European Championships.

Dafne Schippers wants to evoke memories of her Dutch compatriot Fanny Blankers-Koen by winning a sprint triple at the six-day event opening Tuesday.

Farah has been unbeaten at the Euros since he won his first double in 2010, then defended his 5,000 meters title in Helsinki two years ago — his only race there as he prepared for the London Olympics. Two Olympic gold medals and a similar double at the 2013 world championships in Moscow has put him on a status in distance running only slightly lower than Ethiopian greats Haile Gebrselassie and Kenenisa Bekele.

A late withdrawal from the Commonwealth Games early this month because of a stomach ailment has cast some doubt on his form and raised some criticism he picked the easier European competition over one which included many of the best African runners. Still, in Switzerland he should be busy enough with one 10,000 final and possibly a 5,000 heat and final in a mere five days.

Schippers should be even busier with a possible eight races over six days. Schippers has one big thing in her favor — she is a heptathlete; athletes known for stamina and perseverance until they, usually literally, drop after the last

of seven events. This season, she shares the top European time over the 100 with France’s Myriam Soumare at 11.03 seconds and is on her own with the best European time of 22.34 over 200. In the 4x100 relays, the Dutch team could give any other European nation a run for its money.

It gives her a shot at a triple, which would be the best performance for a Dutchwoman since Blankers-Koen won three gold and a silver at the 1950 Euros in Brussels. Schippers starts out with the 100 heats on Tuesday. Beyond the chase for multiple medals, the outstanding event with a realistic shot at a world record will be Friday’s high jump, pitting world champion Bogdan Bondarenko of Ukraine against Olympic champion Ivan Ukhov of Russia.

Both are chasing the 21-yearold world record of 2.45 meters set by Cuba’s Javier Sotomayor.

Bondarenko set a European record of 2.42 this year, while Ukhov follows closely behind with 2.41 he jumped this spring. In the women’s high jump, the issue will not be how high, but how well athletes can bounce back.

Blanka Vlasic of Croatia won two world titles before she needed an operation on her Achilles two years ago. Her recovery was slow, but this season she has jumped 2 meters again, only .01 shy of the world’s top mark by Anna Chicherova. And since the Russian is out injured, 30-year-old Vlasic could take her first title in four years.

Bale homecoming, James set for debut in Super Associated Press

There’s little doubt the UEFA Super Cup’s star local attraction will be Gareth Bale, the Cardiff boy turned $130-million Real Madrid star, playing for the Spanish giants on home soil for the first time.

The winger is in the Welsh capital with little to prove, having completed a debut season at Real, when his price-tag brought such high expectations, by netting the decisive goal in May’s Champions League final win. The limelight was taken, just briefly, even off Cristiano Ronaldo on that May night against Atletico Madrid in Lisbon.

It was ending a 12-year wait for the coveted “Decima” — a 10th European Cup — that brings Real back in contention for the Super Cup on Tuesday in the Cardiff City Stadium and a meeting with the Europa League winners, Spanish rival Sevilla.

Success was the springboard for another offseason of vast spending, lavishing around $150 million to bring two revelations of the World Cup to the Spanish capital: Germany midfielder

Toni Kroos and Colombia playmaker James Rodriguez, who are preparing for their Real debuts in Cardiff.

It was only a year earlier that $130 million was spent bringing Bale from Tottenham to link up with Ronaldo, who cost only slightly less in 2009 when joining from Manchester United.

The $108-million swoop for James from Monaco was wrapped up soon after he returned from a career-defining World Cup, scoring a tournament-leading six goals in Colombia’s run to the quarterfinals.

Now the technically-gifted playmaker, who goes by his first name, is preparing to step into a star-studded Real team looking to collect the first of a possible six trophies this season.

“They are all stars,” the 23-year-old James said. “For me it is a pleasure to be with them. Even training with them.

It is something unique and I hope I can play here together with them for many years.”

This year much of Real’s concentration will be on becoming the first team in the post-1993 Champions League era to defend the European Cup — especially after waiting so long to bring it back to Santiago Bernabeu.

“When you get this title with Madrid it is the pinnacle for a player and hopefully we can repeat it in the future,” defender Alvaro Arbeloa said. “We knew what it meant, not just for the club, but for all of our fans, and sharing that joy with them is something we will never forget ... Real Madrid’s prestige has always been a result of its victories in Europe.”

Even though the Super Cup lacks the status of the Champions League, it is a chance to put down an early marker as the European season begins.

“We are hungry to win a lot of titles and now we have another chance, we hope to make the most of it,” Arbeloa said.

PARIS — Monaco got its title bid off to a stuttering start by losing 2-1 to Lorient in its French league opener on Sunday. Lorient substitute Valentin Lavigne scored the winning goal with a low strike in the 87th minute.

Vincent Aboubakar initially put Lorient ahead with a penalty in the ninth minute, but Monaco striker Radamel Falcao also converted a spot kick to level in the 78th.

Monaco was down to 10 men in the 68th when Ricardo Carvalho picked up a second yellow card for fouling Lorient substitute Walid Mesloub. A depleted Lyon beat Rennes 2-0 earlier Sunday.

Lorient capitalized on its first scoring chance when Aboubakar beat the offside trap and cut inside Monaco center back Aymen Abdennour, who tripped him. The Cameroon forward sent goalkeeper Danijel Subasic the wrong way to open the scoring.

Monaco troubled the visitors by finding space on the left flank. Dimitar Berbatov headed a cross from leftback Layvin Kurzawa in the 26th but Lorient

goalkeeper Benjamin Lecomte made the save. Four minutes later, Kurzawa chased a ball over the top from Geoffrey Kondogbia but headed straight into Lecomte’s arms.

United set to begin another new era under Van Gaal Associated Press

MANCHESTER, England — From the gloom and constant disappointments of David Moyes’ tenure to hope and anticipation under new manager Louis van Gaal, the mood at Manchester United has shifted dramatically heading into the new Premier League season.

Order appears to have been restored at Old Trafford after United’s most tumultuous year in a generation, when Moyes turned the club from English champions into something of a laughing stock in the space of 10 months.

And it’s all down to the ap- pointment of Van Gaal, the kind of charismatic, authoritarian coach United should really have gone for in the summer of 2013 to usher in the post-Alex Ferguson era.

It’s barely been a month since he took over after his World Cup duties with the Netherlands and it’s always hasty to make judgments based on preseason results, but things are already looking up for England’s biggest team.

United is yet to lose under Van Gaal, beating Liverpool and Real Madrid on the way to winning a preseason tournament in the United States, and looks to have warmed to the tactics and change of formation (to a 3-5-2) of the Dutchman. Players like Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata look energized.

“He’s a tough manager but he’s been great since he came in,” Rooney said. “He’s given us all a different way of looking at football, which we haven’t had before.”

It’s a huge contrast to life under Moyes, who never garnered the respect of the squad due to his lack of top-level experience as a manager.

Van Gaal has coached — and won league titles — in Spain, Germany and the Netherlands and has the gravitas to take on the rebuilding job at United that proved too much for his predecessor.

Already, aging defensive trio Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra have been moved on and Van Gaal has signaled that some fringe players will be jettisoned. That could include the likes of Nani, Anderson and Javier Hernendez, as well as Marouane Fellaini, who has flopped since joining from Everton for 27.5 million pounds (then $43 mil-

lion) last summer.

The only signings have been left back Luke Shaw and Spanish central midfielder Ander Herrera for a combined 50 million pounds ($84 million) but there are likely to be more incomings before the transfer window shuts on Aug. 31.

It will be a strange season for United, which failed to qualify for any European competition for the first time since 1990 after finishing in seventh place last season — 22 points behind Premier League winner Manchester City.

But United will have noted how Liverpool benefited last season from no European involvement to finish second, and it would be foolish to write off the team’s chances of regaining the title.

Van Gaal’s likely front line of Rooney, Robin van Persie and Juan Mata is one of the strongest in the league and Herrera brings energy to the midfield that was lacking last season.

Defensively, United appears vulnerable — Jonny Evans, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling aren’t in the same class as Ferdinand and Vidic — but the same was said of Van Gaal’s Dutch team at the World Cup and it reached the semifinals, only missing out on a place in the final on penalties.

Even if United fails to bridge the gap to title favorites City and Chelsea, fans at Old Trafford still are likely to see that kind of attractive, expansive, attacking football that had become commonplace before Moyes’ troubled reign.

With Ryan Giggs retired from playing and now in the dugout as Van Gaal’s assistant, this will be the first season without a member of the famous “Class of 92” in the squad. It’s certainly a new era for United — and in Van Gaal, it has a proven winner to kick it off.

RIO DE JANEIRO - Former Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari made a losing return to Gremio when they were beaten 2-0 at arch-rivals Internacional on Sunday in his first game since he was re-appointed by the club where he made his name.

Felipao (Big Phil) took charge of his first club game almost exactly a month after his Brazil team were humiliated 7-1 by Germany in their World Cup semi-final.

Chile midfielder Charles Aranguiz headed Internacional in front from Fabricio’s cross in the 62nd minute, just as Gremio appeared to be taking charge of the game at the Beira-Rio. Claudio Winck added the second with a breakaway goal as Internacional extended their unbeaten run against Gremio to nine matches.

Scolari made his name as a coach with Gremio when he won the Libertadores Cup, Brazilian championship and Copa Brasil with the Porto Alegre club between 1993 and 1996. He also had a brief spell in charge in 1987.

The volatile 65-year-old went on to lead Brazil to their fifth World Cup title in 2002 and then took Portugal to the Euro 2004 final and the World Cup semi-final two years later.

He returned as Brazil coach but his reputation was left in tatters by their performance at the World Cup last month. Internacional, second in the table, moved within two points of leaders Cruzeiro, who drew 0-0 at Criciuma.

Former Manchester City, Real Madrid and AC Milan forward Robinho also made an unhappy return to a former club as Santos lost 1-0 at home to Corinthians in his first game back.

Robinho was raised at Santos and left the club nine years ago for Europe, where he never managed to live up to his early promise.

Bale homecoming, James set for debut in Super Associated Press

There’s little doubt the UEFA Super Cup’s star local attraction will be Gareth Bale, the Cardiff boy turned $130-million Real Madrid star, playing for the Spanish giants on home soil for the first time.

The winger is in the Welsh capital with little to prove, having completed a debut season at Real, when his price-tag brought such high expectations, by netting the decisive goal in May’s Champions League final win. The limelight was taken, just briefly, even off Cristiano Ronaldo on that May night against Atletico Madrid in Lisbon.

It was ending a 12-year wait for the coveted “Decima” — a 10th European Cup — that brings Real back in contention for the Super Cup on Tuesday in the Cardiff City Stadium and a meeting with the Europa League winners, Spanish rival Sevilla.

Success was the springboard for another offseason of vast spending, lavishing around $150 million to bring two revelations of the World Cup to the Spanish capital: Germany midfielder

Toni Kroos and Colombia playmaker James Rodriguez, who are preparing for their Real debuts in Cardiff.

It was only a year earlier that $130 million was spent bringing Bale from Tottenham to link up with Ronaldo, who cost only slightly less in 2009 when joining from Manchester United.

The $108-million swoop for James from Monaco was wrapped up soon after he returned from a career-defining World Cup, scoring a tournament-leading six goals in Colombia’s run to the quarterfinals.

Now the technically-gifted playmaker, who goes by his first name, is preparing to step into a star-studded Real team looking to collect the first of a possible six trophies this season.

“They are all stars,” the 23-year-old James said. “For me it is a pleasure to be with them. Even training with them.

It is something unique and I hope I can play here together with them for many years.”

This year much of Real’s concentration will be on becoming the first team in the post-1993 Champions League era to defend the European Cup — especially after waiting so long to bring it back to Santiago Bernabeu.

“When you get this title with Madrid it is the pinnacle for a player and hopefully we can repeat it in the future,” defender Alvaro Arbeloa said. “We knew what it meant, not just for the club, but for all of our fans, and sharing that joy with them is something we will never forget ... Real Madrid’s prestige has always been a result of its victories in Europe.”

Even though the Super Cup lacks the status of the Champions League, it is a chance to put down an early marker as the European season begins.

“We are hungry to win a lot of titles and now we have another chance, we hope to make the most of it,” Arbeloa said.

PARIS — Monaco got its title bid off to a stuttering start by losing 2-1 to Lorient in its French league opener on Sunday. Lorient substitute Valentin Lavigne scored the winning goal with a low strike in the 87th minute.

Vincent Aboubakar initially put Lorient ahead with a penalty in the ninth minute, but Monaco striker Radamel Falcao also converted a spot kick to level in the 78th.

Monaco was down to 10 men in the 68th when Ricardo Carvalho picked up a second yellow card for fouling Lorient substitute Walid Mesloub. A depleted Lyon beat Rennes 2-0 earlier Sunday.

Lorient capitalized on its first scoring chance when Aboubakar beat the offside trap and cut inside Monaco center back Aymen Abdennour, who tripped him. The Cameroon forward sent goalkeeper Danijel Subasic the wrong way to open the scoring.

Monaco troubled the visitors by finding space on the left flank. Dimitar Berbatov headed a cross from leftback Layvin Kurzawa in the 26th but Lorient

goalkeeper Benjamin Lecomte made the save. Four minutes later, Kurzawa chased a ball over the top from Geoffrey Kondogbia but headed straight into Lecomte’s arms.

Lorient proved shaky on set pieces. Some poor communication between Lecomte and Yoann Wachter nearly helped Monaco level in the 43rd as the Lorient centerback diverted a corner onto the post.

United set to begin another new era under Van Gaal Associated Press

MANCHESTER, England — From the gloom and constant disappointments of David Moyes’ tenure to hope and anticipation under new manager Louis van Gaal, the mood at Manchester United has shifted dramatically heading into the new Premier League season.

Order appears to have been restored at Old Trafford after United’s most tumultuous year in a generation, when Moyes turned the club from English champions into something of a laughing stock in the space of 10 months.

And it’s all down to the ap- pointment of Van Gaal, the kind of charismatic, authoritarian coach United should really have gone for in the summer of 2013 to usher in the post-Alex Ferguson era.

It’s barely been a month since he took over after his World Cup duties with the Netherlands and it’s always hasty to make judgments based on preseason results, but things are already looking up for England’s biggest team.

United is yet to lose under Van Gaal, beating Liverpool and Real Madrid on the way to winning a preseason tournament in the United States, and looks to have warmed to the tactics and change of formation (to a 3-5-2) of the Dutchman. Players like Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata look energized.

“He’s a tough manager but he’s been great since he came in,” Rooney said. “He’s given us all a different way of looking at football, which we haven’t had before.”

It’s a huge contrast to life under Moyes, who never garnered the respect of the squad due to his lack of top-level experience as a manager.

Van Gaal has coached — and won league titles — in Spain, Germany and the Netherlands and has the gravitas to take on the rebuilding job at United that proved too much for his predecessor.

Already, aging defensive trio Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra have been moved on and Van Gaal has signaled that some fringe players will be jettisoned. That could include the likes of Nani, Anderson and Javier Hernendez, as well as Marouane Fellaini, who has flopped since joining from Everton for 27.5 million pounds (then $43 mil-

lion) last summer.

The only signings have been left back Luke Shaw and Spanish central midfielder Ander Herrera for a combined 50 million pounds ($84 million) but there are likely to be more incomings before the transfer window shuts on Aug. 31.

It will be a strange season for United, which failed to qualify for any European competition for the first time since 1990 after finishing in seventh place last season — 22 points behind Premier League winner Manchester City.

But United will have noted how Liverpool benefited last season from no European involvement to finish second, and it would be foolish to write off the team’s chances of regaining the title.

Van Gaal’s likely front line of Rooney, Robin van Persie and Juan Mata is one of the strongest in the league and Herrera brings energy to the midfield that was lacking last season.

Defensively, United appears vulnerable — Jonny Evans, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling aren’t in the same class as Ferdinand and Vidic — but the same was said of Van Gaal’s Dutch team at the World Cup and it reached the semifinals, only missing out on a place in the final on penalties.

TORONTO - Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga had one more surprise in his bag of upsets, beating second seeded Roger Federer 7-5 7-6 (3) to cap a scintillating march to the Rogers Cup title on Sunday.

After knocking off world number one Novak Djokovic in the third round, taking out twice champion and eighth seed Andy Murray in the quarters and seventh seed Grigor Dimitrov in the semis, Tsonga denied 17-time grand slam winner Federer a landmark 80th career title.

“I played well all this week, I beat many good guys,” said Tsonga.

“It’s a big achievement because I worked really hard to come back from my knee injury last year.

“Unfortunately there is no secret... behind this there is a lot of work.

“I’m waiting for this since couple of months now. I was looking for my best level, today I had it and it’s great.”

Certainly there was no disputing that Tsonga’s win was welldeserved, the 13th seeded Frenchman’s hit list including players who had won seven of the last 10 Canadian titles (Djokovic 2012, 2011, 2007; Murray 2010, 2009 and Federer 2004, 2006). It marked the first time since 2002 that a player had beaten the four top seeds to win a Masters series event.

“He beat great players along the way and backed it up with another great final,” said Federer, who

turned 33 on Friday and had been hoping to celebrate his birthday by lifting the trophy. “No excuses.

I think he played really solid and well when he had to. “I wish I could have played a bit better in the finals today.

“There were things I could have done better, but, overall it was a positive week. “I go away from this feeling good about my chances next week and also at the U.S. Open.”

In 16 career meetings Tsonga had beaten the Swiss maestro just five times but three came on the Canadian hard courts.

With Federer appearing in his fifth Canadian final and Tsonga having advanced to at least the semi-finals in three of his four trips to Canada, both men had a cool look of confidence as they walked onto a blazing hot centre court. In a week of superb performances, Tsonga may have saved his best for last,

the second seeded Swiss unable to manage a single break chance the entire match.

Federer did not allow Tsonga many break opportunities himself but the one he did, in the first set, was all the Frenchman needed converting the chance to clinch the set and a 1-0 lead.

Play remained tight in the second with no break points, the set going to a tie-break won by Tsonga, who took four straight points after the breaker had been deadlocked at 3-3 “What is achieved is achieved and I will just continue on this way, continue to work hard,” said Tsonga, when asked about his U.S. Open chances. “This win gives me a lot of hope for the rest of the year, of course. “But I will continue to do my work like I did last couple of months and I hope I will continue to win.”

ZURICH — Britain’s Mo Farah wants to underscore his status as the pre-eminent longdistance runner of his age with another 5,000-, 10,000-meter double at the European Championships.

Dafne Schippers wants to evoke memories of her Dutch compatriot Fanny Blankers-Koen by winning a sprint triple at the six-day event opening Tuesday.

Farah has been unbeaten at the Euros since he won his first double in 2010, then defended his 5,000 meters title in Helsinki two years ago — his only race there as he prepared for the London Olympics. Two Olympic gold medals and a similar double at the 2013 world championships in Moscow has put him on a status in distance running only slightly lower than Ethiopian greats Haile Gebrselassie and Kenenisa Bekele.

A late withdrawal from the Commonwealth Games early this month because of a stomach ailment has cast some doubt on his form and raised some criticism he picked the easier European competition over one which included many of the best African runners. Still, in Switzerland he should be busy enough with one 10,000 final and possibly a 5,000 heat and final in a mere five days.

Schippers should be even busier with a possible eight races over six days. Schippers has one big thing in her favor — she is a heptathlete; athletes known for stamina and perseverance until they, usually literally, drop after the last

of seven events. This season, she shares the top European time over the 100 with France’s Myriam Soumare at 11.03 seconds and is on her own with the best European time of 22.34 over 200. In the 4x100 relays, the Dutch team could give any other European nation a run for its money.

It gives her a shot at a triple, which would be the best performance for a Dutchwoman since Blankers-Koen won three gold and a silver at the 1950 Euros in Brussels. Schippers starts out with the 100 heats on Tuesday. Beyond the chase for multiple medals, the outstanding event with a realistic shot at a world record will be Friday’s high jump, pitting world champion Bogdan Bondarenko of Ukraine against Olympic champion Ivan Ukhov of Russia.

Both are chasing the 21-yearold world record of 2.45 meters set by Cuba’s Javier Sotomayor.

Bondarenko set a European record of 2.42 this year, while Ukhov follows closely behind with 2.41 he jumped this spring. In the women’s high jump, the issue will not be how high, but how well athletes can bounce back.

Blanka Vlasic of Croatia won two world titles before she needed an operation on her Achilles two years ago. Her recovery was slow, but this season she has jumped 2 meters again, only .01 shy of the world’s top mark by Anna Chicherova. And since the Russian is out injured, 30-year-old Vlasic could take her first title in four years.

MADRID — Spain has imported a U.S.-made experimental Ebola drug to treat a Spanish missionary priest who was evacuated from Liberia last week after testing positive for the killer virus.

The Health Ministry announced Monday that the ZMapp drug, made by Mapp Biopharmaceutical Inc. of San Diego, was obtained in Geneva this weekend and brought to Madrid to treat Miguel Pajares.

The 75-year-old priest was evacuated from Liberia and placed in isolation Thursday at Madrid’s Carlos III Hospital.

There is no known cure or licensed treatment for Ebola, which has killed more than 1,000 people in the current outbreak in West Africa. The World Health Organization has declared the Ebola outbreak an international health emergency and urged nations worldwide to donate resources to battle the disease.

Two Americans diagnosed with Ebola in Liberia and evacuated back to the United States have been treated with the drug.

One of them, Dr. Kent Brantly, said last week that his condition was improving and the husband of the aid worker being treated with Brantly said the same thing.

Both are being treated in isolation at an Atlanta hospital.

The ethical questions surrounding experimental Ebola drugs and vaccines were being debated Monday during a tele-

conference of medical ethicists and other experts organized by WHO. At least one country in West Africa has expressed interest; Nigeria’s health minister, Onyenbuchi Chukwu, said at a news conference last week that he had asked U.S. health officials about access but was told the manufacturer would have to agree.

Dr. Tom Frieden, director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said “there are virtually no doses available,” a CDC spokesman said last week, before the announcement that Spain was also using the drug.

Because the ZMapp drug has never been tested in humans, scientists say there’s no way to tell if it has made any difference to the two American aid workers who have so far received it.

The drug is a mixture of three antibodies engineered to recognize Ebola and bind to infected cells so the immune system can kill them. Scientists culled antibodies from laboratory mice and ZMapp’s maker now grows the antibodies in tobacco plants and then purifies them. It takes several months to even produce a modest amount of the drug.

CANANDAIGUA, New York — The collision was as common as any in racing. Kevin Ward Jr.’s car spun twice like a top, wheels hugging the wall, before it plopped backward on the dimly lit dirt track.

In a sport steeped with bravado, what happened next was another familiar, but treacherous, move: Wearing a black firesuit and black helmet, the 20-yearold Ward unbuckled himself, climbed out of the winged car into the night and defiantly walked onto the track at Canandaigua Motorsports Park.

He gestured, making his dis-

gust evident with the driver who triggered the wreck with a bump: three-time NASCAR champion Tony Stewart.

Ward, a relative unknown compared to NASCAR’s noted swashbuckler, was nearly hit by another passing car as he pointed with his right arm in Stewart’s direction. As he confronted Stewart in his passing car, disaster struck.

Ward was standing to the right of Stewart’s familiar No. 14 car, which seemed to fishtail from the rear and hit him. According to video and witness accounts, Ward’s body was sucked underneath the car and hurtled through the air before landing on his back

as fans looked on in horror.

Ward was killed. Stewart, considered one of the most proficient drivers in racing, dropped out of Sunday’s NASCAR race at Watkins Glen, hours after Saturday’s crash.

And the sport was left reeling from a tragedy that could have ripple effects from the biggest stock car series down to weeknight dirt track racing.

“There aren’t words to describe the sadness I feel about the accident that took the life of Kevin Ward Jr.,” Stewart said in a statement.

Authorities questioned the 43-year-old Stewart once on Saturday night and went to Wat-

kins Glen to talk to him again Sunday. They described him as “visibly shaken” after the crash and said he was cooperative.

On Sunday, Ontario County Sheriff Philip Povero said that investigators also don’t have any evidence at this point in the investigation to support criminal intent. But he also said that criminal charges have not been ruled out.

The crash raised several questions: Will Ward’s death cause drivers to think twice about on-track confrontations?

Did Stewart try and send his own message by buzzing Ward, the young driver, only to have his risky move turn fatal? Or

did Ward simply take his life into his own hands by stepping into traffic in a black firesutsuit on a dark track? The only one who may have that answer is Stewart.

David S. Weinsten, a former state and federal prosecutor in Miami who is now in private practice, said it would be difficult to prove criminal intent.

“I think even with the video, it’s going to be tough to prove that this was more than just an accident and that it was even culpable negligence, which he should’ve known or should’ve believed that by getting close to this guy, that it was going to cause the accident,” he said.

JAKARTA - The officials at Papua province’s immigration office are still interrogating two French journalists, Thomas Charles Danbois and Valentine Bourrat, for allegedly violating their stay permit in Papua.

“Both are being questioned separately by the immigration officials,” Chief of Papua province’s Immigration Office Garda Tampubolon stated on Monday.

With regard to the progress made in questioning, Tampubolon noted that he was not yet sure whether an administrative sanction will be imposed on the French journalists.

Tampubolon added that the officials from the French Embassy in Jakarta had requested to make contact with the two journalists. The embassy officials were keen to know the condition of their citizens, Tampubolon remarked.

It was earlier reported that two French journalists are being interrogated by the Papua Police for their alleged close relationship with a criminal armed group (KKB) in Jayawijaya, Papua.

“They are still being questioned. We have as yet not come to any conclusion (about their case),” Papua regional police command spokesman Senior Commissioner Sulistyo Pudjo stated when asked for confirmation about the issue.

The two journalists, Charles Thomas Tendeis (40) and Valentine Sailen (25), are believed to be lovers.

Charles has been arrested for holding a tourist visa but conducting activities of a journalist, such as interviewing supporters of the armed group believed to be part of the separatist Free Papua Movement (OPM) organization headquartered around Jayawijaya.

Jayawijaya police resort chief Adjunct Senior Commissioner Adolof Beay had earlier reported that Charles and his girlfriend had been arrested in an area in Wamena, Jayawijaya District, on Wednesday night.

The two were riding motorcycles along with local residents, which drew police attention, as the region was considered prone to shooting incidents by the KKB. The police then approached the foreigners and questioned their purpose and intention of being in a restricted area and traveling by motorcycles in the night.

“At first, they said they were tourists, but further questioning revealed that they were journalists. They were later arrested because they were holding tourist visas,” he pointed out.

Their claim to be tourists was logical, as since Thursday, the Baliem Valley Festival was being celebrated in the region for a week, he added.

He noted that the Jayawijaya police later referred the two French journalists to the Papua regional command for further investigation.

Senior Commissioner Sulistyo Pudjo noted that Charles possessed a press card issued by ART-TV, but it had expired in 2006.

“The person concerned confessed that he was a journalist and had a press card, but it had already expired in 2006. So, he is still under interrogation,” he added.

“Anywhere in any country the police have the right to question a foreigner involved in suspicious activities. So, the case will be framed using every piece of information gathered from him,” Pudjo emphasized.

He explained that any foreign journalist keen to carry out journalistic work, especially in the West Papua Province, must have a permit from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In July 2013, Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa had stated that the security situation in Papua was one of the country’s major concerns due to certain elements in the region seeking international attention by attacking international figures, including journalists.

Due to this reason, foreign journalists who seek to cover Papua must apply for a permit from the government, so that they can be provided adequate security to ensure their safety, he added.

Jobs growth has lagged profits, revenues Reuters

WASHINGTON - Employment growth at the largest U.S. companies has lagged far behind increases in revenue and operating profit since the start of the century, as firms reaped the benefits of globalization, technology, and other ways to operate more productively, according to a Reuters analysis of corporate data.

From 2001 to 2013, inflationadjusted revenue at 100 of the largest publicly traded companies

Information from individual companies suggests a lot of the new jobs were created overseas, especially given that in this period there was offshoring and outsourcing of work that was done previously in-house and in the U.S. There was also substantial growth in sales in foreign markets and a resulting expansion of operations overseas.

The data highlight a central question that officials in the Obama administration and at the U.S. Federal Reserve confront: has the nation’s ability to generate well-paying jobs in manufacturing and other sectors been fundamentally scarred by changes in the global economy that may predate the 2008-2009 economic crisis but were more starkly revealed in its aftermath. The answer could have major implications for economic policy decisions, such as how long the Fed keeps interest rates at very low levels to stimulate jobs growth.

At the Fed, Chair Janet Yellen has spoken of the steady drift in national income “away from labor and towards capital,” while some policymakers worry the full depth of the changes are not yet clear.

“We have to understand what structurally is going on ... Is the country really changing in a fundamental way?” Atlanta Federal Reserve Bank President Dennis Lockhart said last month, citing the possibility that “polarized labor markets” could become entrenched.

That would mean a workforce based

on large numbers of lower paid workers, with a few highly paid managers, professional and technology workers, and a permanent hollowing out of the middle class.

This would be a potential drag on overall purchasing power and economic growth.

Data on the 150 publicly traded companies with the largest sales was collected from Thomson Reuters’ Eikon system. Banks and financial firms were excluded because the way they report results isn’t comparable to other companies and to tie the analysis more closely to the production of goods and services.

Several companies, such as energy investment company Energy Transfer Equity, were excluded because their records did not extend back far enough or were complicated by corporate maneuvers, such as breakups.

The resulting list of 100 large companies covers a range of industries, from consumer giants Wal-Mart and McDonalds , to old-line industrials such as Caterpillar and General Motors as well as technology giants like IBM and Microsoft.

Google was included but its public records did not include employee headcount for 2001 and 2002 and it declined to provide data for those years. The search company reported fulltime employment of 47,756 for 2013.

The collective headcount of the 100 fell in only one of the years included in the study, dropping 1.33 percent in 2009, the year in which the financial crisis and accompanying recession had the most savage impact.

Russia’s stocks soar after avoiding delisting

MOSCOW - The shares of Russia’s two biggest banks soared on Monday after avoiding being delisted from a top emerging markets index as part of the West’s response to the Kremlin’s stance in Ukraine.

The New York-based MSCI index provider decided on Friday to keep offering the shares of Sberbank and VTB to clients as long as the two Russian state-held giants did not issue any more stock.

VTB’s shares gained four percent and those of Sberbank rose

more than three percent in the opening minutes of trading on Moscow’s main exchange.

The Moscow stock market followed the banks’ lead higher and was up more than one percent while the ruble gained half a percent against both the dollar and euro.

Russian investors said they now expected the other main exchanges in Europe to follow New York’s lead and keep the two stocks.

“We believe that the risk of two of the heavyweight members of the MSCI Russia being excluded from the index was weighing on the broader Russian market last week,

and that the news will therefore provide some relief to the market,” VTB Group’s investment house said in a research note that stressed it may have a conflict of interest in the matter.

“The decision made by the MSCI pioneers the series of announcements expected from other index providers: S&P Down Jones Indices, Vienna Stock Exchange, and the FTSE,” VTB Capital said.

The MSCI Russia index is global traders’ preferred way to access a balanced package of paper that reflects the price of the main Moscowissued stocks.

MSCI was under pressure to drop the two finance houss as part of a sanctions package unleashed against Russia’s financial and defence and high technologies sectors over the Kremlin’s perceived backing of insurgents in eastern Ukraine.

The index provider said in a statement that it reached its decision after a series of “consultation with the investment community” over concerns that the two banks were now prohibited from issuing new shares on the US and European markets.

MSCI said in had decided not to

raise the weight of the two stocks in its Russia index should the banks ignore the restrictions and proceed with a share issue in order to raise more capital.

“Both Sberbank and VTB Bank have officially announced that they do not intend to issue new shares in the near future,” MSCI said.

It added that it would weigh its decision again should VTB and Sberbank announce plans to issue new stock.

Traders said that a delisting threatened to accelerate the pace of investors’ capital outflows from Russia.

Foreigner questions about security in Bali Bali Post

DENPASAR - An Italian couple, Sebastian, 60, and his wife Rinaldi, 60, questioned about the security condition in Bali. He was snatched on Thursday night (Aug 7) in Seminyak, Legian, Kuta, around 11:30.

Unfortunately, the case was not reported to police on the pretext that snatching case would be difficult to be captured.

On Saturday (Aug 9), Sebastian who had been visiting Bali since 15 years ago told reporters that what happened to him was a tragedy and indicated that Bali, especially Kuta tourist area, was no longer safe.

After having dinner and when passing through the street in Seminyak tourist area, Sebastian piggybacking his wife was verged and the bag carried by her wife was snatched by two men riding a motorcycle.

When the bag was snatched, the victim was attempting to defend to the strap broke. Unfortunately, the culprit was more violent and powerful enough so that the bag containing cellular phone and documents of their holiday in Bali, money and other goods could be taken away.

“I had pursued the culprits on Jalan Kunti but could not found them,” he said disappointedly. Over the incident, the victim’s wife was also disappointed.

“Bali is no longer safe, unlike previous years. I have regularly

visited Bali every holiday since 15 years ago. Now, the security for tourists and perhaps for local residents, too, should get the attention of police. Without immediate handling, this could tarnish the image of Bali in the eyes of international community,” criticized the travelers having the profession as teacher in his home country.

The traveler staying at Shushi Bungalow on Jalan Popies Kuta claimed to still be grateful because the rope of her bag broke. Otherwise, she would fall from the motorcycle. “To me, the lost bag is not a problem, but the information in cellular phone and documents during the holidays in various countries recorded in the camera are very valuable,” said Sebastian. Although he did not report the case to police, Sebastian hoped such incident could get the attention from police authority to improve the security in Bali so that it would not tarnish the image in the international community. Seoul calls for high-level talks with North Korea Associated Press

SEOUL — South Korea on Monday proposed high-level talks with rival North Korea next week to discuss resuming reunions of Korean War-divided families, a proposal that could lead to the easing of tensions after months of North Korean missile tests and heated rhetoric from both countries.

The South Korean Unification Ministry said in a statement that it suggested meeting Aug. 19 on the North Korean side of the truce border village of Panmunjom. There was no immediate response from Pyongyang.

The ministry said it hoped to focus on possible family reunions over Chuseok, a major holiday celebrated in both countries that falls on Sept. 8. It also wants to discuss other issues of “mutual interest,” but a ministry official, who would speak only on condition of anonymity, citing department rules, couldn’t elaborate.

The Koreas last had a high-level meeting in February. Since then, North Korea has conducted an unusually large number of missile and artillery tests. Pyongyang also has insulted South Korea’s leader, calling her a prostitute, and expressed fury over U.S.-South Korean military drills.

The latest round of annual joint drills between the allies is set to take place in the next week or so, though officials have not released an exact starting date. The most recent family reunions were held over six days in February, and were the first such meetings in more than three years. CAIRO — An Egyptian-brokered ceasefire halting the Gaza war held into Monday morning, allowing Palestinians to leave homes and shelters as negotiators agreed to resume talks in Cairo.

The truce took effect just after midnight (2101 GMT), preceded by heavy rocket fire toward Israel. In Cairo, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said the cease-fire would allow humanitarian aid into battered Gaza neighborhoods and the reopening of indirect talks on a more lasting and comprehensive deal.

On Monday morning, high school students in Gaza filed the streets as they headed off to pick up their graduation certificates after the Education Ministry said they’d be ready.

People waited to buy fuel for generators as power and communication workers struggled to fix cables damaged in the fighting. Long lines formed at ATMs. In Cairo, negotiators said talks would resume at 11 a.m. (0800 GMT). The fourmember Israeli delegation arrived at Cairo International Airport earlier Monday morning.

The monthlong war, pitting the Israeli military against rocket-firing Hamas militants, has killed more than 1,900 Palestinians, the majority civilians, Palestinian and U.N. officials say.

In Israel, 67 people have been killed, all but three of them soldiers, officials there say.

The fighting ended in a three-day cease-

fire last Tuesday. Egypt had hoped to use that truce to mediate a long-term deal. But when it expired, militants resumed their rocket fire, sparking Israeli reprisals. The violence continued throughout the weekend, including a burst of fighting late Sunday ahead of the expected cease-fire.

Last week’s talks failed in part because Israel rejected Hamas’ demand for a complete end to the blockade of the Gaza Strip, enforced by Egypt and Israel. Israel says the closure is necessary to prevent arms smuggling, and officials do not want to make any concessions that would allow Hamas to declare victory.

The blockade has greatly limited the movement of Palestinians in and out of the impoverished territory of 1.8 million people for jobs and schooling. It has also limited the flow of goods into Gaza and blocked virtually all exports. Unemployment there is more than 50 percent.

Bassam Salhi, a Palestinian delegation member, said he was optimistic ahead of Monday’s talks.

“We hope to reach a deal within the 72 hours, based on ending the blockade and opening the crossings,” Salhi said.

Israeli officials had walked away from negotiations over continued fire from Gaza.

“Israel will not negotiate under fire,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said earlier Sunday, warning that his country’s military

campaign “will take time.”

The current Gaza war escalated from the abduction and killing of three Israeli teens in the West Bank in June. Israel blamed the killings on Hamas and launched a massive arrest campaign, rounding up hundreds of its members in the West Bank. Hamas and other militants unleashed rocket fire from Gaza. killed a suspected Palestinian militant early Monday morning in the West Bank village of Qabalan, south of Nablus. Palestinian medical officials identified the dead man as Zakariah al-Aqrah, 21.

LOS ANGELES — Sending heavier vehicles and, eventually, humans to Mars requires first testing new technologies to see if they actually work.

But it’s infeasible to conduct experiments on the red planet, so to mimic Mars’ low-density atmosphere, NASA sent a saucerlike test vehicle high above the Earth.

NASA engineers announced Friday that the June mission’s main objective was met: The vehicle, called the Low Density Supersonic Decelerator, flew to 190,000 feet (57,900 meters) at more than four times the speed of sound and simulated Martian landing conditions.

“The vehicle did an amazing job of getting to the right speed and altitude,” said Ian Clark, principal investigator at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

The experimental flight, which cost about $150 million and was conducted from the U.S. Navy’s Pacific Missile Range Facility on Kauai, Hawaii, was intended as a dry run for two more tests scheduled for next year.

One of the technologies NASA engineers tested is an inflatable, doughnut-shaped ring around the edge of the saucer-like vehicle that deploys like a puffer fish in one-third of a second, slowing the vehicle. In the test run, the saucer went from traveling at Mach 4.3 — more than four times the speed of sound — to a breezy Mach 2, making the inflatable device a success, NASA engineers said.

The second technology is a

100-foot-wide (30-meter-wide) parachute, which virtually disintegrated the moment it was released. In the months ahead, NASA will try to figure out how to properly deploy the parachute, Clark said.

“The idea of taking 200 pounds of Kevlar and nylon and deploying it at 2,500 mph, 200 pounds that inflated would be the size of a small warehouse, is certainly a challenging endeavor. There’s a lot of physics with this problem that we’re now gaining new insights into that we’ve never had before,” Clark said. “And we’re going to take all of that knowledge, and feed it toward our flights next year.”

GAILLAC - A group of wine cooperatives in southwest France has joined forces with leading scientists to “liberate” the flavours most prized by consumers in growing wine markets, from China to the US. In a bid to bring out the fruitiness enjoyed by many new wine drinkers, the Vinneo project has been developing the blackcurrant aroma of the Fer Servadou grape variety and the violet aroma of the Negrette variety.

Since 2009 it has been working with scientists on technologies to develop a range of varietal wines -- ones made from a single-named type of grape -- to appeal to the palates of consumers worldwide.

“We didn’t want to make the wine our grandfather would have made.

We wanted to make the wine our grandfather would have made if he could,” Vinovalie director Jacques Tranier told AFP. Vinovalie, which is leading the projects, is a group of four major cooperative wineries in southwest France. They represent the appellations of Gaillac, Fronton and Cahors and are one of the area’s largest producers of red and rose wines, along with a small amount of white.

For too long, Tranier said, French winemaking had “overplayed the return to tradition” while at the same time ignoring innovation -- to the detriment of the industry.

In particular, he believes French winemakers have neglected the fruity flavours enjoyed by newer wine drinkers in fast-growing markets such as Asia, and which are often found in New World wines.

“We used to think that the whole world revolved around French wine,” Tranier said.

“At the beginning of the 2000s that orthodoxy collapsed. We realised all of a sudden that we had competition,” he added.

The project -- run in conjunction with researchers at the National Polytechnic Institute of Toulouse (INP) and the French Vine and Wine Institute (IFV) -- now appears to be bearing fruit.

Vinovalie exports have tripled over the last five years from two to six million euros ($2.6 to $8 million).

The growth comes as global consumption of wine is on the rise, driven by a growing taste for the tipple in Asia and particularly China, now the world’s biggest consumer of red wine.

Between 2008 and 2012, the amount of wine drunk around the world increased by 3.23 percent, and that is expected to climb by another 4.97 percent by 2017, according to a study by Vinexpo and the British International Wine and Spirit Research think-tank.

In the United States, which has been the world’s top consumer of wine since 2011, red wine consumption is expected to jump 14 percent in the next five years.

Farmers in Petang cultivating crystal guava

MANGUPURA - Farmers in Petang subdistrict begin to get interested in the crystal guava cultivation. This guava originating from Brazil is considered quite promising and potential to be developed in the highlands of Petang. So far, the crystal guava cultivation in Petang still takes place in a small scale.

Made Ludra, one of the local farmers cultivating the crystal guava, said the guava plant was suitable to be developed in Petang having cool climate. Species of this plant was quite productive and easy to maintain. Its fruit was also fairly popular in the market. In addition to crystal guava, farmers also intensively cultivated red-fleshed guava.

Guava has a unique and fresh flavor. Its ripe fruit is shiny yellow and weighs about 500 grams with a diameter of about 8 cm. More interestingly, this kind of guava plant can be cultivated in flower pots and

placed in the yard or back of the house. In terms of selling price, red guava and crystal guava are sold for IDR 15,000 each kilogram.

Meanwhile, the bearing-fruit nursery transplant is sold for 200,000. At the moment, this kind of guava is widely cultivated in Petang, chiefly at Semana hamlet, Plaga village as well as the Penikit and Sekar Mukti hamlet, Belok Sidan village. About 150 farmers coalesced into the group have cultivated around 17,000 plants. The nursery transplants are brought in from Majalengka, West Java. “Armed with such nursery

transplants, the group can currently harvest as much as 5 quintals, so the marketing is still relatively limited,” said Ludra recently.

Meanwhile, the Head of Badung Agriculture, Horticulture and Forestry Agency, IGAK Sudaratmaja, revealed the guava was a new commodity intensively developed in Petang. According to him, the guava supply was much needed by modern markets, especially in Denpasar. industry and trade office said on Monday the export earning decline despite a sharp increase in volume. Bali exports 7,189.8 tons of fresh and frozen tuna in the January-May period up from 5,114.2 tons in the same period last year.

percent of Bali’s total export earning of US$215.04 million in the five months period. Tuna fish is the main exports commodity of fishery and marine products from Bali. Tuna fishes are exported mainly to Japan, followed by the United States, Thailand, Singapore and Australia, and Europe.

Christophe Haunold, of the INP, said it was important to preserve the character of the Vinovalie grapes -- Malbec, Fer Servadou, Loin de l’oeil (also known as Len de l’El) and Negrette -- while ensuring both quality and quantity.

“That required a lot of science and technology,” he said.

“We sought to identify complex molecules, precursors of particular flavours... which appear and disappear depending on maturity to refine the optimal harvest time,” he added.

INP used sophisticated chromatography -- a laboratory technique that involves separating mixtures -- to map the chemical identity of the different grapes and understand how the molecules that develop taste and aroma evolve during the vinification process.

Researchers also looked at the effect of heating grapes for different lengths of time and to different temperatures using a technique called “Flash Detente”.

The process involves heating the grapes to about 82 degrees C (180 degrees F) before placing them in a huge vacuum chamber, where they are cooled.

The cells of the grape skins burst from the inside, making it easier to extract the tannins, a key element in developing the character of a wine.

So far Vinovalie has concentrated on two international brands -Astrolabe and Terreo -- but another research project is also planned for 2015.

Such processes are decried by some traditionalists and must be carried out precisely: the prized blackcurrant aroma can swiftly turn to green pepper if not properly treated.

Therefore, this practitioner from Jakarta expected that tourism labor of Indonesia, especially Bali, should not study halfheartedly. Additionally, they should not be pessimistic to achieve a good position in hospitality field, though many foreign workers were hired in Indonesia. “Do not be discouraged. The opportunity to occupy higher positions remains open,” said Wahyu.

However, he cautioned that foreign labor should not be let control the tourism industry of Indonesia. Moreover, they would be given the opportunity to be the ambassador of tourism of Indonesia. “Some of property businesses in Bali are held by foreigners. Young generation should see this opportunity. Hopefully, they can grab the opportunities,” he said.

SEMARAPURA - The activity of ‘Smarapura Skate Fest’ in a series with the 69th celebration of the Indonesia’s Independence Day reaped severe protest from community leaders, Sunday (Aug 10). It happened because the activity was even centered near the catus pata or central intersection the monument. Even, in the west of the monument was built a stage of music performance distancing the catus pata monument. Actually, this location is known to be sacred and often used as the venue of the Hindu religious ceremonies.

A community leader of Klungkung, Dewa Soma, when contacted on Sunday deplored because the celebration even took place around the catus pata monument. Actually, the town of Semarapura itself had owned the Puputan Square as central venue to organize any entertainment equipped with a stage. Philosophically, he assessed the central intersection area was a sacred place, just like the central point of the state, symbolizing the balance of universe.

Thus, it was often used to organize various rituals and exorcism rites. He asserted that if it was used as a venue of entertainment, it would affect the sanctity. “Existence of the central intersection must be understood.

We’ve known its function, but we undermine the sanctity alone. Please be distinguished, which one is for the sake of religion and entertainment purposes,” he said.

According to him, as long as it was used for religious and ceremonial activities such as development parade or the like, it was considered legitimate. However, if it was used for entertainment stage, he considered it less elegant and tarnished the sanctity of catus pata. He hoped that

more people could understand about the catus pata so that it would not be used for activities that could tarnish the sanctity of catus pata.

Similar opinion was also revealed by another community leader, Wayan Sutena. He appreciated the presence of creativity by young people in conjunction with the Independence Day of the Republic of Indonesia.

However, as Hindu people should be able to distinguish between the sacred place and the place worth using for entertainment. Actually, the catus pata was lately used as location to organize caru labuh gentuh ritual. Moreover, last Sunday coinciding with full moon, many Hindus worshipped around the catus pata.

“Lately, it was just used for holding ritual. It is now even used for the stage of entertainment and distancing the catus pata. I think it very outrageous,” he said. In addition, the entertainment stage was also disturbing because it disrupted the comfort of residents due to noises from morning to night.

Besides, it also closed the main road access from the east to the west. If the reason was due to requiring a highway as the track of activities, it would be better to hold it in front of

the entrance gates or behind the stage of Puputan Klungkung Square. Moreover, it could be centered directly near the Puputan Klungkung Square by preparing skate board track. Sutena also questioned about the permit of the activity held in the west of the catus pata whereas it clearly belonged to a sacred place.

Chairperson of the organizing committee, Nova Cahya, admitted not to know if the catus pata belonged to sacred zone. The committee set the entertainment stage in the west of catus pata after making coordination with the National Sports Committee (KONI) of Klungkung. “This event is held to commemorate the anniversary of the Indonesia’s Independence Day. We’re just a part of some activities held by the KONI,” she explained.

by KONI Klungkung as partner of sport activities. Actually, her party just wanted to provide a place for young children as quite a lot of the skate board lovers in Klungkung. TABANAN - To anticipate the entry of radical groups into Tabanan County, Tabanan Police and the 1619/Tabanan Military District Command conducted a sweeping to a number of boarding and rented houses, Saturday night (Aug 9). Although the sweeping did not get any indication leading to the involvement of radical movement such as the network group of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), the activity could ensnare at least 49 migrants that did not complete themselves with required documents.

The joint raid began at 8:00 p.m. where the officers searched a number of locations until dawn by targeting the areas of migrants from various regions, especially the boarding and rented houses.

All this time, the boarding and rented houses were supposed to be the hiding place of radical groups. Even, rented house owners did not carefully check the occupants. Thus, it was required an intensive examination by police as a form of vigilance.

Some locations searched included Jalan Pulau Nias and Jalan Rajawali at Dauh Peken village, Tabanan subdistrict as well as Gubug village, Tabanan.

“The migrant enforcement activities are meant to anticipate the movement of radical groups,” said Chief of Tabanan Police, Dekananto Eko Purwono, Sunday (Aug 10).

The joint raid led by the Operations Division Head of Tabanan Police, AA Rai Laba, were involved 55 personnel from various units in the Tabanan Police, Town Police and personnel of the 1619/Tabanan Military District Command.

Based on examination to hundreds of migrants at a number of locations in the town of Tabanan, the officers found at least 49 violations. Where, 43 of them did not have seasonal resident certificate and 6 others had expired identity card. Similarly, from the sweeping at different locations at Gubug village, Tabanan subdistrict, of the 150 people examined, 12 people were found having no seasonal resident certificate and five others showed expired identity card, so that a total 17 violations were found.

It was known that based on in-depth examination to hundreds of migrants after the Eid holidays, there were no indications leading to the involvement of radical movements such as the ISIS. They were the nomads coming to Bali to change their fate by looking for a job opportunity, but did not equip themselves with complete identity documents.

From the initial examination, police did not find any residents of boarding and rented houses included in the network of radical groups, especially the ISIS. However, his party would continue to monitor and detect as early as possible so as the ISIS network could no develop. “We will continue to monitor,” affirmed Dekananto. (kmb28)

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

LOS ANGELES — Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort of “The Fault in Our Stars” rode a victorious wave at the Teen Choice Awards. The actors were honored with several prizes at Sunday’s fan-favorite extravaganza, including choice drama movie actor and breakout movie star for Elgort and choice drama and action movie actress for “Divergent” star Woodley. “Ninja Turtles” in box office romp Agence France-Presse

LOS ANGELES - “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” romped to the top of the US box office, dethroning “Guardians of the Galaxy” in their first weekend in theaters, industry figures showed Sunday.

The fighting turtles, on a mission to save New York from the clutches of evil-doers, made off with $65 million in receipts, industry tracker Exhibitor Relations said.

Starring Megan Fox, the latest reboot of the Ninja Turtle franchise handily overtook “Guardians of the Galaxy,” which dropped to number two with a $41.5 million gross following a stellar $94 million debut the weekend before.

Animals and extra-terrestrial superheros got little competition, with tornado

disaster flick “Into the Storm” a distant third with an $18 million take at the box office its first weekend out.

Fourth was another newcomer, “The Hundred Foot Journey,” a romantic comedy with Helen Mirren and Om Puri as culture-clashing restaurateurs. It made $11.1 million. French action film “Lucy,” starring Scarlett Johansson as a drug mule with telekinetic powers, was fifth with $9.3 million in its third week in theaters.

It came in ahead of dance film “Step Up All In,” the fifth in a series, this one

featuring struggling dancers in a televised contest in Las Vegas. It grossed $6.5 million its first week in theaters.

Seventh place with $5.7 went to “Hercules”, starring Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson. “Get On Up,” a biopic about US soul singer James Brown, dropped to eighth place from third, bringing in $5 million its second weekend out.

“Dawn of the Planet of the Apes,” the critically praised latest installment in the sci-fi film series about apes co-existing with humans, drew $4.4 million for ninth place.

Disney’s “Planes: Fire & Rescue,” the computer-animated movie about a talking plane that helps firefighters save a national park, made $2.4 million, leaving it in tenth place.

New president urged to invoke presidential regulation Bali Post

DENPASAR - Balinese people coalesced into the Forum of Balinese People Rejecting Reclamation (ForBALI) required the elected president to cancel the Presidential Regulation No.51/2014. The demand was a form of disappointment of Balinese people against the presidential decision having made revision against the allocation of most coastal areas and small islands belonging to a part of Benoa Bay area.

Coordinator of the ForBALI, Wayan Suardana alias Gendo, expected the newly elected president to revoke the Presidential Regulation legalizing the reclamation in Benoa Bay conservation area. “We cannot expect SBY because he is

the actor fully getting involved in the reclamation of Benoa Bay who issued the Presidential Regulation,” he explained.

Gendo openly asked Joko Widodo to invoke the Presidential Regulation having revised the spatial plan

of Denpasar, Badung, Gianyar and Tabanan after serving as president.

“Whether Jokowi later on meets or not, it will highly depend on him if he believes or not in the power of the people,” he said amidst the oration.

The action of ForBALI with the community to voice their aspirations to reject the reclamation began at 10:20 in the morning by taking the route around the Bajra Sandhi Monument, Friday (Aug 8). The oration performed in front of the office of the governor of Bali was filled with theatrical, musical, poetry and dance performance.

band group, Booby Cool, denied the negative opinion against the rampant action rejecting the reclamation today. According to him, the action performed by Balinese musicians, activists, students and community were a pure struggle to preserve and protect the nature of Bali. “Here, we rejecting the reclamation are never paid. It is our pure struggle to preserve and protect the nature of Bali. There is absolutely no intervention from other parties in this action,” he explained.

In addition, the native literati to Bali, Wayan ‘Jengki’ Sunarta asked the artists and literati to come

down to fight for the fate of Bali.

According to him, all this time many artists and literati were not sensitive to the condition of Bali and just thought of the works of art and themselves.

“Necessarily, all the artists in Bali should come down the street to speak out the struggle for the fate of Bali. When claiming as an artist they have to be critical to environmental and socio-cultural issues occurring in their own homeland,” said the literati who expressed his rejection against reclamation through the poems composed.
