‘Secret Life of Pets’ Debuts to Massive $103.2 Million

LOS ANGELES - “The Secret Life of Pets” dominated the weekend box office, racking up a massive $103.2 million and launching the first new franchise of the summer.

Its success is a feather in the cap for Illumination chief Chris Meledandri, confirming his status among the ranks of animation giants.

The family film, which explores what dogs, cats and other animal companions do while their owners are busy at work, cost an economical $75 million to produce, roughly half of what most studios spend making animated movies. Universal is backing the picture, which launched across 4,370 locations.

“Illumination just has a way of creating ‘want to see’ movies,” said Nick Carpou, Universal’s domestic distribution chief. “They make movies that resonate with audiences.”

And ones that spawn toylines.

The cuddly creatures that populate “Pets” seem tailor made to sell stuffed animals and t-shirts, creating a financial windfall for the studio.

The film deftly exploited dog and cat obsessed moviegoers to appeal to both parents and children. In the United States alone, Americans are expected to spend more than $62 billion in 2016 on their pets.

PARIS - The smell of teargas floating in the air near the Eiffel Tower proved an ominous sign on the night when France’s dream of a perfect soccer summer turned sour. The clashes at the Paris fan zone, where supporters trying to force their way in were pushed back by riot police, were relatively minor.

But such distractions were not part of a script which was then shredded on the pitch where Portugal gave a spirited rearguard performance to deny France their happy ending.

The French were desperate for some light relief when the tournament kicked off a month ago after strikes and violent protests against a labour law, with a state of emergency still in place after Islamist attacks that killed 130 people in the French capital in November.

France started the tournament in sluggish fashion but improved match after match, advancing to the final with a convincing 2-0 win over world champions Germany.

Suamba explained that customary and hamlet authorities must clarify the presence of the migrants. In this regard, they must clarify what is the purpose of their coming to Bali. If they are indeed looking for job opportunities, they should have equipped themselves with adequate skill.

“It must be clear because without a purpose it will harm them. On the one hand, it will harm them because having no skills so that they ultimately cannot get a work. Then, it is very much worried if later on they bring in negative impacts,” said this PDI-P politician from Tabanan.

According to Suamba, if the migrants are not supervised, Bali will be soon fully occupied. In terms of capacity and carrying capacity, it will not be sufficient any longer.

In the meantime, a member of Commission II of the Bali House of Representatives, Tjok Asmara Putra Sukawati, said that Bali cannot prohibit migrants. However, the government can encourage people, especially at village level to protect its territory related to the reception of permanent migrant considering all this time there is a gap between the locals and migrants in search of work. One of the causes of this gap is that local population is bound to customary activities.

“To that end, all the migrants should be involved in the existing activities, so that there is no difference between the locals and migrants in terms of customary work. If they

are not ready to do so, they will be back again,” he said.

In addition to protection against the region, added Asmara, the customary village in particular also needs to make strengthening internally. It is based on consideration that the presence of migrants is definitely going to cause a cultural shift if Balinese people are not strong. On that account, the understanding on the Balinese customs, culture and traditions inspired by Hinduism becomes very important.

“Maintaining tradition and performing ceremony are the charms and customary and cultural defense remaining to only exist in this world. Protection of the region alone is not enough without any idealistic understanding of the community,” said this politician of Democrat Party.

Asmara added that the strengthening can be conducted by opening and encouraging ashram education. At the ashram, the young generation in particular is given the understanding so that they are more familiar with customs and culture. When having known it well, they will love so that they are ultimately not easily influenced by external cultures.

“If they do not know anything and then get external culture and consider it nicer, they will definitely turn. However, if they have an understanding about the superiority of our culture and customs, it will result in a stronger idealism in the next generation, the young people of Bali,” he said. (kmb32)

After being preoccupied with homecoming traffic, police officers are now made alert by backflow. For instance, it was seen in the eastern entrance of Bali namely Padangbai Harbor, where the backflow started to look crowded since day one after the Eid holiday up to Sunday afternoon (Jul. 10). To prevent illegal migrants from entering Bali, police officers tightened the checks against the migrants. As noted, eight people were repatriated because they did not bring along a clear identity.

Chief of Padangbai Sea Police, Gede Wali, said on Sunday (Jul. 10) that the peak is estimated to occur on Sunday night between 20:00 and 02:00. His ranks have anticipated by increasing the number of personnel at the Padangbai Harbor. As instructed by the Chief of Karangasem Police, Sugeng Sudarso, the inspection process against migrants will be tightened at the peak of backflow.

The arrival figures remained lower than passengers on day three before the Eid. As noted, the departure of homecoming traffic peaked with 4,852 people. In the meantime, the arrival of vehicles on day three before the Eid reached 12 big buses, one bus, 34 ten-wheeled trucks, 92 large trucks, 102 medium trucks, 386 small trucks, 627 cars and 1,464 motorcycles. Astronomers spy giant planet, three stars in odd celestial ballet

CAPE CANAVERAL - Astronomers have discovered a planet unlike any other ever found, one that loops widely around one star that is locked in a gravitational embrace with two others in a triple-star system, creating a curious celestial ballet.

The findings, published on Thursday in the journal Science, challenge current notions about what makes a planetary system viable.

With three stars in the system, the massive planet would experience triple sunrises and triple sunsets during one season and all daylight in another. Since the planet’s orbit is very long, each season lasts for hundreds of years.

“Depending on which season you were born in, you may never know what nighttime is like,” lead researcher Kevin Wagner of the University of Arizona said.

The planet, called HD 131399Ab, is about four times bigger than Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system, and is orbiting in a three-star system located about 340 light-years from Earth in the constellation Centaurus.

Scientists are not sure how HD 131399Ab came to exist. It orbits its parent star about twice as far as Pluto circles the sun, needing 550 years to complete a single orbit.

Astronomers have previously discovered planets in multi-star systems, but never one that circles a parent star with such a wide berth.

It also is one of the few extrasolar planets - those outside our solar system - to be directly imaged by telescope.

The planet’s orbit is akin to the

distance more typically seen when a star orbits another star, not a planet orbiting a star.

“This is the first planet that we’ve found with an orbit that is comparable to that of the stars,” Wagner said.

If HD 131399Ab’s orbit was just a bit wider, computer simulations show it could be gravitationally elbowed out of the system by the pair of smaller stars that orbit each other and the main star, which is about 80 percent bigger than the sun.

Though the planet is relatively young, around 16 million years old compared to the 4.5-billionyear-old Earth, it likely has had an eventful life. Scientists suspect it may have started off in a much closer orbit around two parent stars before it was gravitationally bounced to its extreme distance.

Scientists plan additional observations to determine if the planet’s orbit is actually stable.

“It is not clear how this planet ended up on its wide orbit in this extreme system ... but it shows there is more variety out there than many would have deemed possible,” Wagner said.

The planet was detected using the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope in northern Chile. (rtr)

Sukawijaya affirmed that the issues on drug user will be seriously handled. He hoped that Buleleng, chiefly the younger generation, can avoid drug abuse in the future. “We want that Buleleng is clean of drugs and this is my determination. Solar plane leaves Seville on penultimate leg of round-the-world flight

SEVILLE - An airplane powered solely by energy from the sun took off from southern Spain early on Monday on the penultimate leg of the first ever fuel-free round-the-world flight.

The single-seat Solar Impulse 2 lifted off from Seville at 0420 GMT en route for Cairo, a trip expected to take 50 hours and 30 minutes.

The plane has more than 17,0000 solar cells built in to its wings and travels at a cruising speed of around 70 km per hour (43 mph).

On its journey, which began in Abu Dhabi and is due to end there, it has been piloted in turns by Swiss aviators Andre Borschberg and Bertrand Piccard. Borschberg is taking this run, the 16th leg, over the Mediterranean Sea, crossing through the airspace of Tunisia, Algeria, Malta, Italy and Greece before ending in Egypt. (rtr)

Such condition, for instance, can be seen in the forest area at Suter village. Based on observation, at one point of the forest overgrown by huge trees seems to be used as a landfill. Both organic and inorganic waste like plastic is found to pile up in the forest.

Allegedly, the rubbish was deliberately dumped into the forest area by unscrupulous residents as seen from the condition of waste collected in plastic bags. Piles of the rubbish in the forest indirectly indicate that the dumping of rubbish in the forest seems to have lasted for long enough time.

Other than at Suter, similar condition is also seen in the forest area on the outskirts heading for Manikliyu village. Likewise, the

forest area along the main road section of Penelokan-Singaraja is inseparable from the siege of rubbish.

When asked for his confirmation on Sunday (Jul. 10), the Section Head of Regional Conservation at the Bali Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA), Sulistyo Widodo, said that the large amount of rubbish accumulating in the forest area of Kintamani is not solely the responsibility of the BKSDA. Considering the region belongs to a tourism area, the issue should become a joint responsibility of all parties. According to him, the public awareness of not throwing rubbish into the forest is the main key to the issues.

“The BKSDA alone is unable to take care of the rubbish at the location. Hopefully, all parties can take part,” he explained.

Sulistyo also added that the problem of rubbish in the forest area does not only occur in Kintamani.

Almost all regions experience similar problem. To maintain forest area so that it remains clean of trash, he admitted to have repeatedly called on people not to throw rubbish in the forest area any time.

“We have disseminated about this awareness every meeting so that people can also maintain the sanitation of the forest area. Sanitation of this forest is not only for the sake of the BKSDA, but also for all of us,” said Sulistyo. (kmb40)

Crowded backflow, five migrants repatriated

NEGARA - Backflow on day two after the Eid at Gilimanuk started to look crowded from Saturday night (Jul. 9) to Sunday (Jul. 10). The increase of security officers and identity checks to migrants was intensified.

Moreover, the Jembrana Population and Registry Office already repatriated five migrants without identity. The five migrants were recorded to have been repatriated starting from day two after the Eid or Thursday (Jul. 7) to day three after the Eid or Sunday (Jul. 10).

The Head of the Jembrana Population and Registry Office, I Ketut Wiaspada, when asked for his confirmation on Sunday afternoon justified if his agency already repatriated five migrants within the past four days. He said that when entering Bali namely the Gilimanuk identity checkpoint, the migrants did not present their identity card to the officers.

He said that the migrants argued with various reasons. One admitted to only accompany his brother, another claimed to be a project worker while the others claimed as students. However, his agency tried to take assertive action.

Among the five migrants including Kapi Arianto from Solo, Central Java, with the purpose of visiting his brother in Denpasar was repatriated on Thursday (Jul. 7). Secondly, Helmi from Banyuwangi, East Java, admitting to be a student and wishing to go to Denpasar was repatriated on Friday (Jul. 8). Thirdly, Diki Wahyudi from Banyuwangi, East Java claiming to drive his brother to Denpasar was repatriated on the same day.

In the meantime, the fourth migrant, Rasimin from Sidoarjo, East Java, claiming to be project worker in Tabanan was repatriated on Saturday (Jul. 9). GIANYAR - The proposal on the establishment of the Ubud regional development authority agency keeps on rolling. Formation of this entity is considered strategic as an effort to achieve sustainable tourism based on culture in Ubud. Currently, the proposal is still being processed at the subdistrict level and is expected to be widely disseminated to the public. This was revealed by a community leader of Ubud, Tjokorda Gde Raka Sukawati, Friday (Jul. 8).

He said that Ubud as one of the main tourist destinations of Bali faces many problems. Traffic congestion, inadequate infrastructure and rampant beggars are some of the problems seen on the surface.

So far, these problems have yet been resolved so that it is often complained by travelers.

“Many complaints have been delivered by travelers. It is very unfortunate, whereas Ubud has a great potential,” said the Chairman of LPM Ubud.

The most vital issue is the concept of the Ubud tourism development itself. This is one of the most important problems having to get serious attention from the government. So far, he said, the government still does not play optimal role. Cultural activities in Ubud

develop naturally. Strategic role of the government, especially local government, is not visible.

“Ubud is necessary to have a development concept especially in terms of culture. Ubud shall be maintained properly. There must be a clearly defined maintenance to Ubud. Otherwise, Ubud will be abandoned one day,” he said.

Related to the issue faced by Ubud, it is considered necessary to establish an authority agency.

Proposal on the establishment of the agency, he said, was asked by the Bali Representative Council, Arya Wedakarna, not long ago. In essence, the authority agency will play a role in formulating various issues related to the development of Ubud village in particular in

the field of tourism. The authority agency is also believed to be able to speed up the process of delivering people’s aspirations.

“Actually, Ubud has owned such institution like the LPM. However, if there is an authority agency, it will have more national context.

People’s proposals will be able to be quickly responded to the level of central government,” he said.

According to him, the presence of authority agency to Ubud is very strategic. He pointed that Sanur has so far been running it well. Ubud needs to implement it considering the concept of cultural tourism upheld has begun to shift. “In essence, the development concept of cultural tourism in Ubud will be more obvious with this authority agency,” he said.

Regardless of whether there is an authority agency or not, he said that the government needs to be more responsive to the problems of Ubud. Do not let the classic problem continues to undermine the tourism image of Ubud and cause Ubud to be abandoned by travelers. (kmb25)

Rare bank robbery raises questions on complacency in safe Singapore

SINGAPORE - A rare bank robbery in Singapore has sparked a social media debate on whether the country’s low crime rates made authorities and society in general too complacent, while Thai authorities said on Monday they had detained the suspected thief.

A man stole S$30,000 ($22,300) from a Standard Chartered branch last Thursday, having slipped the teller a note saying he was armed, a source with knowledge of the matter said.

The teller pressed a silent alarm button and police arrived within minutes, but it was too late, said the source, who declined to be identified as he is not authorised to speak to the media.

Standard Chartered said the bank has taken “immediate actions to further enhance” security. It declined to comment on the details of the robbery.

There was no guard on duty, the bank said, but the staff acted according to procedures.

The Monetary Authority of Singapore urged banks to “learn

from the recent incident and assess whether their security measures need to be enhanced”.

The prosperous city state has very low levels of crime, thanks in part to decades of strict policing and tough punishments, raging from death for drug trafficking and murder to prison and caning for lesser crimes.

The first bank robbery in more than a decade sparked a flurry of debate on social media about whether Singapore has become too complacent.

Authorities released few details of the theft, prompting questions about bank security and criticism of the tight-lipped police.

exchange between a smiling bank teller and man who says he wants to rob the bank.

The teller asks whether the man if he would like a transfer into his account. They agree on cash.

But police on Monday explained that they had declined to release details of the robbery in order to catch the culprit.

Senior Thai police officers said a suspect has been arrested in Thailand and was being held by immigration police.

“Police through the investigations managed to establish the identity of the suspect on the same day but he had already left Singapore for Bangkok,” Singapore police said on their Facebook page.

SYDNEY - Australia declared on Monday the AIDS epidemic is no longer a public health issue there, a month after the United Nations adopted an ambitious target to eliminate the threat globally by 2030.

The government-backed Australian Federation of AIDS Organisations (AFAO) and top scientists said the number of people being diagnosed with AIDS in Australia was now so small it was no longer reported.

AIDS cases in Australia peaked in 1994, at 953 cases, according to the Kirby Institute for infection and immunity in society.

Since then, following the introduction of antiretroviral treatment, that prevent AIDS developing in people who are infected with the HIV virus, and awareness campaigns, AIDS diagnoses have declined sharply.

“Australia is incredibly fortunate to be in the position and its because of farsighted government policy,” said Darryl O’Donnell, chief executive AFAO. “We had community organisations of gay men, sex workers and drug users doing outreach campaigns that were extraordinarily effective,” O’Donnell said.

A spokeswoman for the Federal Department of Health said while it was tremendous that AIDS was “not the automatic death sentence that it once was”, approximately 1,100 cases of HIV are detected each year.

“We must not let down our guard.”

Worldwide there are 36.7 million people living with HIV, according to the World Health Organisation, with 180,000 people dying from AIDS-related illness in the Asia-Pacific region last year.

The United Nations agreed a new declaration on ending the AIDS epidemic at a meeting in New York last month.

The UNAIDS Fast-Track approach to ending the AIDS epidemic has a set of time-bound targets, including reducing the number of people newly infected with HIV from 2.1 million in 2015 to fewer than 500,000 in 2020, reducing the number of people dying from AIDS-related illnesses from 1.1 million in 2015 to fewer than 500,000 in 2020 and eliminating HIV-related discrimination.

Andrew Grulich, head of the HIV Epidemiology and Prevention Program at the Kirby Institute, said other countries could learn from Australia.

“The thing that has characterised Australia is a partnership between all sectors involved,” he said. “Community, research and the government - and having bipartisan political support.” (rtr)

Over 23,600 people visit Bogor Botanical Garden

BOGOR - A total of 23,607 visitors, including 74 foreigners, visited Bogor Botanical Garden, here, Saturday. “We have predicted that there would be a significant increase in the number of visitors in the weekend, before the post-fasting Lebaran or Eid El Fitr Islamic Holiday ends,” Upun Panipar of the botanical garden said here, Sunday.

On the Lebaran day (July 6), 4,515 domestic visitors and 90 foreign tourists visited the garden. On Thursday (July 7), the garden received 12,725 domestic and 77 foreign visitors; and on Friday, there were 11,945 domestic and 82 foreign visitors. The Bogor Botanical Garden is a home to thousands of flora, including several trees which are hundreds of years old. Brigadier General Heri Wiranto confirmed the information. “I have heard about it but until now no official information has been received,” he said. Chia Tong Lim, the employer of the three Indonesian citizens, reported the incident to the police in Sabah, his state, on Sunday.

In his report given at around 4.17am he said that his workers who are Indonesian citizens were abducted while they were fishing using his ship in the Felda Sahabat Tungky waters in Lahad Datu.

He reported the abduction happened at around 1200 hours local time when his ship with the Indonesian crew on board was approached by a speed boat with five people aboard wielding rifles.

Immediately three of the crew of his boat were taken by the armed group suspected to be connected with the Abu Sayyaf group of the Philippines, he said.

The four other crew left consisting of one Indonesian citizen and three Philippine citizens from Bajau Palauh tribe were released together the ship with registration number LD113/5/F which has now arrived at Lahad Datu port.

Chia Tong Lim who lives in Kampung Cina, Lorong Satu, Pekan Kunak, Sabah, said the names of the abducted Indonesian citizens are Lorence Koten (34), Teodorus Kopong (42), and Emanuel (40).

The Indonesian consulate general in Kinabalu, Sabah, said in its text message sent through its immigration staff, Nasriansyah, confirmed the incident on Sunday.

Nasriansyah said the case is currently being tackled by the foreign ministry in cooperation with the governments of Malaysia and the Philippines.(ant)

Safira said the cooperation would include extension of scholarships, exchange of lecturers and joint researches and publication of the joint researches in international scientific journals.

So with the signing of the MoU it is hoped the obstacles would be overcome,” Safira said. A number of universities in Indonesia have seen the good prospect for the cooperation with civitas academica of the North African country to be developed.

Minister Tahar Hajar said the bilateral relations that have been developed by the two countries for a long time since the Asia-Africa Conference in Bandung in 1955 need to be followed up with concrete cooperation in the field of education and research. British PM candidate Leadsom apologies to rival over motherhood row

LONDON - Andrea Leadsom, the junior minister seeking to become Britain’s next prime minister, apologised to her childless rival over remarks which suggested she had a greater stake in the country’s future because she was a mother.

Leadsom’s comments, published in a newspaper interview on Saturday, caused an uproar and led to harsh criticism from supporters of Theresa May, the interior minister who is the favourite to replace David Cameron.

“I’ve already said to Theresa how very sorry I am for any hurt caused and how that article said completely the opposite of what I said and believe,” Leadsom told the Daily Telegraph newspaper.

Leadsom was little known nationally before becoming a prominent figure in the campaign for Britain to leave the European Union but remains an outsider to succeed Cameron who said he would step down after Britons voted to leave the bloc on June 23.

Leadsom, a devout Christian, accused the Times of “gutter journalism” after it published an interview in which she said: “I feel being a mum means you have a very real stake in the future of our country, a tangible stake.”

It prompted lawmakers in the ruling Conservative party to describe the comments as “vile” and “insulting”. Leadsom told the Telegraph in an interview on Monday the row had left her in tears feeling under attack, and said she had been guilty of naivety.

“I absolutely said, what I specifically said, is that motherhood should not play a part in the campaign. I was pressed to say how my children had formed my views,” she told the Telegraph. “Having children has no bearing on the ability to be prime minister.” (rtr)

DALLAS - The U.S. military veteran who fatally shot five Dallas police officers was plotting a larger assault, authorities said on Sunday, disclosing how he also taunted negotiators and wrote on a wall in his own blood before being killed.

Micah X. Johnson improvised instead and used “shoot-and-move” tactics to gun down the officers during a demonstration on Thursday evening, Dallas Police Chief David Brown told CNN. It was the deadliest day for U.S. law enforcement since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

Brown said a search of Johnson’s home showed the gunman had practiced using explosives, and that other evidence suggested he wanted to use them against law enforcement.

“We’re convinced that this suspect had other plans,” he said, adding that last week’s fatal police shootings of two black men in Minnesota and Louisiana led the 25-year-old Texas shooter to “fast-track” his attack plans.

Johnson, a black veteran who served in Afghanistan, took advantage of a spontaneous march that began toward the end of the protest over those killings. Moving ahead of the rally in a black Tahoe SUV,

Fatherhood breathes new life into Murray’s career

LONDON - Rather than being distracted by the sleepless nights or the regular nappy changing duties that have fallen his way, the arrival of baby daughter Sophia in February has breathed new life into Andy Murray’s career.

Whereas top players used to once put off having families till their careers were in decline or over so that they did not lose focus, on Sunday, Murray joined the likes of Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic by becoming the latest father to win a grand slam title when he beat Milos Raonic 6-4 7-6(3) 7-6(2) to capture a second Wimbledon title.

“Having a child has given me a little bit of extra motivation to work hard, train hard, and do all of the right things to give myself a chance to win these events,” the 29-year-old Scot said after ending a three-year barren run at the slams.

“A lot of people have said, like, when Roger had kids, he started playing some of his best tennis. Novak, the same thing.

But the reality is you still have to put the work in. You still have to have the drive and the dedication to train hard.

“I feel more motivated than ever just now.”

Following the birth of his son Stefan in October 2014, Djokovic turned into an indestructible force, winning five of the next seven grand slam events.

LONDON - Triple Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton has urged fans to be more sporting after boos were heard for the second race in a row at Silverstone on Sunday. In Austria a week before it was Hamilton, now winner of four of the last five races, who was subjected to jeers and whistles after a last lap collision with Mercedes team mate and title rival Nico Rosberg.

On Sunday, boos aimed at championship leader Rosberg mingled with the cheers after the German came second to Hamilton in front of a 139,000 strong British crowd.

“Look at these guys, you don’t see this anywhere around the world.

And you don’t hear a lot of booing, which means we’ve got good British spirit here,” Hamilton had told the sea of fans from the podium.

When the microphone was

passed to Rosberg, and it was evident that Hamilton had spoken too soon, Australia’s former F1 driver turned interviewer Mark Webber interjected: “Come on guys, he fought valiantly. He did what he could.”

Hamilton said later he had wanted to calm the fans down and would not have behaved that way himself.

“I feel like we are better than that. I didn’t really hear a lot of boos. But what you just have to understand is they are mad, passionate fans and something wasn’t right in the last one,” said the Briton.

“Maybe when I get to Germany, maybe we will have the same thing.

I hope not, because I think in sport in general it’s just not the done thing,” he said.

“If I went to a football game and the other team won, I would never boo the other team because

they did a better job and that’s real sportsmanship.”

Rosberg, who attended the postrace fan party, shrugged off what had happened.

“Lewis had it in Austria, that the whole crowd was booing him.

The majority of the British were really, really supportive of me this weekend,” he said.

“I don’t want to catch on to those 15, 20 people or more that dislike me. Much more I should mention how much I appreciate the majority of the people who were supporting me. That’s pretty awesome to see coming to here.

“It just shows the racing spirit they have here. Not only do they love their British drivers but they appreciate passionate drivers who are out there doing their best...that’s quite unique.” (rtr)

“Portugal did not create many chances but they were smart,” he added.

“It’s frustrating. I’m proud of our group and of what we have achieved but this was simply not our night.”

France coach Didier Deschamps, who helped Griezmann shine at the tournament by moving him closer to Olivier Giroud up front, offered sympathy.

“Antoine is a great player and we owe him a lot,” Deschamps said.

Fatherhood breathes new life into Murray’s career

LONDON - Rather than being distracted by the sleepless nights or the regular nappy changing duties that have fallen his way, the arrival of baby daughter Sophia in February has breathed new life into Andy Murray’s career.

Whereas top players used to once put off having families till their careers were in decline or over so that they did not lose focus, on Sunday, Murray joined the likes of Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic by becoming the latest father to win a grand slam title when he beat Milos Raonic 6-4 7-6(3) 7-6(2) to capture a second Wimbledon title.

“Having a child has given me a little bit of extra motivation to work hard, train hard, and do all of the right things to give myself a chance to win these events,” the 29-year-old Scot said after ending a three-year barren run at the slams.

“A lot of people have said, like, when Roger had kids, he started playing some of his best tennis. Novak, the same thing.

But the reality is you still have to put the work in. You still have to have the drive and the dedication to train hard.

“I feel more motivated than ever just now.”

Following the birth of his son Stefan in October 2014, Djokovic turned into an indestructible force, winning five of the next seven grand slam events.

That winning mentality also seems to have rubbed off on Murray as he has now contested the final of his last five tournaments, winning in Rome and Queen’s Club before landing the one that really counted at the All England Club.

“The last three months have been some of the best I’ve played in terms of consistency,” said Murray, who celebrated Sunday’s triumph by hugging the pineapple-topped Challenge Cup while taking a dip in an ice bath in the players’ locker room.

“I made the finals of the last five tournaments, here, Queen’s, French (Open), Madrid and Rome. I don’t think I’d done that before in my career.

“I had my best claycourt season. British PM candidate Leadsom apologies to rival over motherhood row

LONDON - Andrea Leadsom, the junior minister seeking to become Britain’s next prime minister, apologised to her childless rival over remarks which suggested she had a greater stake in the country’s future because she was a mother.

Leadsom’s comments, published in a newspaper interview on Saturday, caused an uproar and led to harsh criticism from supporters of Theresa May, the interior minister who is the favourite to replace David Cameron.

“I’ve already said to Theresa how very sorry I am for any hurt caused and how that article said completely the opposite of what I said and believe,” Leadsom told the Daily Telegraph newspaper.

Leadsom was little known nationally before becoming a prominent figure in the campaign for Britain to leave the European Union but remains an outsider to succeed Cameron who said he would step down after Britons voted to leave the bloc on June 23.

Leadsom, a devout Christian, accused the Times of “gutter journalism” after it published an interview in which she said: “I feel being a mum means you have a very real stake in the future of our country, a tangible stake.”

It prompted lawmakers in the ruling Conservative party to describe the comments as “vile” and “insulting”. Leadsom told the Telegraph in an interview on Monday the row had left her in tears feeling under attack, and said she had been guilty of naivety.

“I absolutely said, what I specifically said, is that motherhood should not play a part in the campaign. I was pressed to say how my children had formed my views,” she told the Telegraph. “Having children has no bearing on the ability to be prime minister.” (rtr)

Dallas sniper plotted bigger assault, taunted officers -police chief

DALLAS - The U.S. military veteran who fatally shot five Dallas police officers was plotting a larger assault, authorities said on Sunday, disclosing how he also taunted negotiators and wrote on a wall in his own blood before being killed.

Micah X. Johnson improvised instead and used “shoot-and-move” tactics to gun down the officers during a demonstration on Thursday evening, Dallas Police Chief David Brown told CNN. It was the deadliest day for U.S. law enforcement since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

Brown said a search of Johnson’s home showed the gunman had practiced using explosives, and that other evidence suggested he wanted to use them against law enforcement.

“We’re convinced that this suspect had other plans,” he said, adding that last week’s fatal police shootings of two black men in Minnesota and Louisiana led the 25-year-old Texas shooter to “fast-track” his attack plans.

Johnson, a black veteran who served in Afghanistan, took advantage of a spontaneous march that began toward the end of the protest over those killings. Moving ahead of the rally in a black Tahoe SUV,

he stopped when he saw a chance to use “high ground” to target police, Brown said.

Before being killed by a bombequipped robot, Johnson sang, laughed at and taunted officers, according to Brown, telling them he wanted to “kill white people” in retribution for police killings of black people. “He seemed very much in control and very determined to hurt other officers,” the police chief said. Over 23,600 people visit Bogor Botanical Garden

BOGOR - A total of 23,607 visitors, including 74 foreigners, visited Bogor Botanical Garden, here, Saturday. “We have predicted that there would be a significant increase in the number of visitors in the weekend, before the post-fasting Lebaran or Eid El Fitr Islamic Holiday ends,” Upun Panipar of the botanical garden said here, Sunday.

On the Lebaran day (July 6), 4,515 domestic visitors and 90 foreign tourists visited the garden. On Thursday (July 7), the garden received 12,725 domestic and 77 foreign visitors; and on Friday, there were 11,945 domestic and 82 foreign visitors. The Bogor Botanical Garden is a home to thousands of flora, including several trees which are hundreds of years old. Chia Tong Lim who lives in Kampung Cina, Lorong Satu, Pekan Kunak, Sabah, said the names of the abducted Indonesian citizens are Lorence Koten (34), Teodorus Kopong (42), and Emanuel (40).

The Indonesian consulate general in Kinabalu, Sabah, said in its text message sent through its immigration staff, Nasriansyah, confirmed the incident on Sunday.

Nasriansyah said the case is currently being tackled by the foreign ministry in cooperation with the governments of Malaysia and the Philippines.(ant)

JAKARTA - Indonesia and Algeria have agreed to strengthen cooperation in the field of university education and scientific researches and sign a memorandum of understanding for it. This is the result of the meeting between the Indonesian ambassador to Algeria, Safira Machrusah, and Algerias minister of university education and scientific researches, Tahar Hadjar, second secretary of the Indonesian embassy in Algeria, Darmia Dimu, said to ANTARA in London on Sunday.

Safira said the cooperation would include extension of scholarships, exchange of lecturers and joint researches and publication of the joint researches in international scientific journals.

“Cooperation in the fields of education and research between Indonesia and Algeria has so far often been hindered by the lack of the MoU, while the potential is huge. So with the signing of the MoU it is hoped the obstacles would be overcome,” Safira said. Several universities in Algeria have expressed their support including Africa University in Adrar and Emir Abdelkader University in Constantine.

A number of universities in Indonesia have seen the good prospect for the cooperation with civitas academica of the North African country to be developed.

Minister Tahar Hajar said the bilateral relations that have been developed by the two countries for a long time since the Asia-Africa Conference in Bandung in 1955 need to be followed up with concrete cooperation in the field of education and research. Crowded backflow, five migrants repatriated

NEGARA - Backflow on day two after the Eid at Gilimanuk started to look crowded from Saturday night (Jul. 9) to Sunday (Jul. 10). The increase of security officers and identity checks to migrants was intensified.

Moreover, the Jembrana Population and Registry Office already repatriated five migrants without identity. The five migrants were recorded to have been repatriated starting from day two after the Eid or Thursday (Jul. 7) to day three after the Eid or Sunday (Jul. 10).

The Head of the Jembrana Population and Registry Office, I Ketut Wiaspada, when asked for his confirmation on Sunday afternoon justified if his agency already repatriated five migrants within the past four days. He said that when entering Bali namely the Gilimanuk identity checkpoint, the migrants did not present their identity card to the officers.

He said that the migrants argued with various reasons. One admitted to only accompany his brother, another claimed to be a project worker while the others claimed as students. However, his agency tried to take assertive action.

Among the five migrants including Kapi Arianto from Solo, Central Java, with the purpose of visiting his brother in Denpasar was repatriated on Thursday (Jul. 7). Secondly, Helmi from Banyuwangi, East Java, admitting to be a student and wishing to go to Denpasar was repatriated on Friday (Jul. 8). Thirdly, Diki Wahyudi from Banyuwangi, East Java claiming to drive his brother to Denpasar was repatriated on the same day.

In the meantime, the fourth migrant, Rasimin from Sidoarjo, East Java, claiming to be project worker in Tabanan was repatriated on Saturday (Jul. 9). On Sunday (Jul. 10), the officers repatriated a migrant named Andi Purwanto from Jember, East Java, with the purpose to be project worker in Denpasar.

Those migrants were repatriated because they did not carry identity cards. “A migrant admitted to bring along an identity card but when interrogated the answer is not in accordance with the identity card carried,” he explained.

Wiaspada said that to anticipate the backflow of homecomers, his agency has increased the number of personnel on duty from 17 people (cross-agency) to 25 personnel. They include two additional officers from the Population and Registry Office and six others from the Jembrana Municipal Police.

The increase in personnel, he said, took place from Saturday until unspecified time or until the condition has gradually turned normal.

In the meantime, at the Gilimanuk Post 2 the Chief of Jembrana Police, Djoni Widodo, together with the Chief of the Criminal Investigation Unit Gusti Made Sudarma Putra and the ranks looked to perform a checking against incoming passengers to Bali carefully. He said that Ubud as one of the main tourist destinations of Bali faces many problems. Traffic congestion, inadequate infrastructure and rampant beggars are some of the problems seen on the surface.

So far, these problems have yet been resolved so that it is often complained by travelers.

“Many complaints have been delivered by travelers. It is very unfortunate, whereas Ubud has a great potential,” said the Chairman of LPM Ubud.

The most vital issue is the concept of the Ubud tourism development itself. This is one of the most important problems having to get serious attention from the government. So far, he said, the government still does not play optimal role. Cultural activities in Ubud

develop naturally. Strategic role of the government, especially local government, is not visible.

“Ubud is necessary to have a development concept especially in terms of culture. Ubud shall be maintained properly. There must be a clearly defined maintenance to Ubud. Otherwise, Ubud will be abandoned one day,” he said.

Related to the issue faced by Ubud, it is considered necessary to establish an authority agency.

Proposal on the establishment of the agency, he said, was asked by the Bali Representative Council, Arya Wedakarna, not long ago. In essence, the authority agency will play a role in formulating various issues related to the development of Ubud village in particular in

the field of tourism. The authority agency is also believed to be able to speed up the process of delivering people’s aspirations.

“Actually, Ubud has owned such institution like the LPM. However, if there is an authority agency, it will have more national context.

People’s proposals will be able to be quickly responded to the level of central government,” he said.

According to him, the presence of authority agency to Ubud is very strategic. He pointed that Sanur has so far been running it well. Ubud needs to implement it considering the concept of cultural tourism upheld has begun to shift. “In essence, the development concept of cultural tourism in Ubud will be more obvious with this authority agency,” he said.

Regardless of whether there is an authority agency or not, he said that the government needs to be more responsive to the problems of Ubud. Do not let the classic problem continues to undermine the tourism image of Ubud and cause Ubud to be abandoned by travelers. (kmb25)

Rare bank robbery raises questions on complacency in safe Singapore

SINGAPORE - A rare bank robbery in Singapore has sparked a social media debate on whether the country’s low crime rates made authorities and society in general too complacent, while Thai authorities said on Monday they had detained the suspected thief.

A man stole S$30,000 ($22,300) from a Standard Chartered branch last Thursday, having slipped the teller a note saying he was armed, a source with knowledge of the matter said.

The teller pressed a silent alarm button and police arrived within minutes, but it was too late, said the source, who declined to be identified as he is not authorised to speak to the media.

Standard Chartered said the bank has taken “immediate actions to further enhance” security. It declined to comment on the details of the robbery.

There was no guard on duty, the bank said, but the staff acted according to procedures.

The Monetary Authority of Singapore urged banks to “learn

from the recent incident and assess whether their security measures need to be enhanced”.

The prosperous city state has very low levels of crime, thanks in part to decades of strict policing and tough punishments, raging from death for drug trafficking and murder to prison and caning for lesser crimes.

The first bank robbery in more than a decade sparked a flurry of debate on social media about whether Singapore has become too complacent.

Authorities released few details of the theft, prompting questions about bank security and criticism of the tight-lipped police.

exchange between a smiling bank teller and man who says he wants to rob the bank.

SYDNEY - Australia declared on Monday the AIDS epidemic is no longer a public health issue there, a month after the United Nations adopted an ambitious target to eliminate the threat globally by 2030.

The government-backed Australian Federation of AIDS Organisations (AFAO) and top scientists said the number of people being diagnosed with AIDS in Australia was now so small it was no longer reported.

AIDS cases in Australia peaked in 1994, at 953 cases, according to the Kirby Institute for infection and immunity in society.

Since then, following the introduction of antiretroviral treatment, that prevent AIDS developing in people who are infected with the HIV virus, and awareness campaigns, AIDS diagnoses have declined sharply.

“Australia is incredibly fortunate to be in the position and its because of farsighted government policy,” said Darryl O’Donnell, chief executive AFAO. “We had community organisations of gay men, sex workers and drug users doing outreach campaigns that were extraordinarily effective,” O’Donnell said.

A spokeswoman for the Federal Department of Health said while it was tremendous that AIDS was “not the automatic death sentence that it once was”, approximately 1,100 cases of HIV are detected each year.

“We must not let down our guard.”

Worldwide there are 36.7 million people living with HIV, according to the World Health Organisation, with 180,000 people dying from AIDS-related illness in the Asia-Pacific region last year.

The United Nations agreed a new declaration on ending the AIDS epidemic at a meeting in New York last month.

The UNAIDS Fast-Track approach to ending the AIDS epidemic has a set of time-bound targets, including reducing the number of people newly infected with HIV from 2.1 million in 2015 to fewer than 500,000 in 2020, reducing the number of people dying from AIDS-related illnesses from 1.1 million in 2015 to fewer than 500,000 in 2020 and eliminating HIV-related discrimination.

Andrew Grulich, head of the HIV Epidemiology and Prevention Program at the Kirby Institute, said other countries could learn from Australia.

“The thing that has characterised Australia is a partnership between all sectors involved,” he said. “Community, research and the government - and having bipartisan political support.” (rtr)

Astronomers spy giant planet, three stars in odd celestial ballet

CAPE CANAVERAL - Astronomers have discovered a planet unlike any other ever found, one that loops widely around one star that is locked in a gravitational embrace with two others in a triple-star system, creating a curious celestial ballet.

The findings, published on Thursday in the journal Science, challenge current notions about what makes a planetary system viable.

With three stars in the system, the massive planet would experience triple sunrises and triple sunsets during one season and all daylight in another. Since the planet’s orbit is very long, each season lasts for hundreds of years.

“Depending on which season you were born in, you may never know what nighttime is like,” lead researcher Kevin Wagner of the University of Arizona said.

The planet, called HD 131399Ab, is about four times bigger than Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system, and is orbiting in a three-star system located about 340 light-years from Earth in the constellation Centaurus.

Scientists are not sure how HD 131399Ab came to exist. It orbits its parent star about twice as far as Pluto circles the sun, needing 550 years to complete a single orbit.

Astronomers have previously discovered planets in multi-star systems, but never one that circles a parent star with such a wide berth.

It also is one of the few extrasolar planets - those outside our solar system - to be directly imaged by telescope.

The planet’s orbit is akin to the

distance more typically seen when a star orbits another star, not a planet orbiting a star.

“This is the first planet that we’ve found with an orbit that is comparable to that of the stars,” Wagner said.

If HD 131399Ab’s orbit was just a bit wider, computer simulations show it could be gravitationally elbowed out of the system by the pair of smaller stars that orbit each other and the main star, which is about 80 percent bigger than the sun.

Though the planet is relatively young, around 16 million years old compared to the 4.5-billionyear-old Earth, it likely has had an eventful life. Scientists suspect it may have started off in a much closer orbit around two parent stars before it was gravitationally bounced to its extreme distance.

Scientists plan additional observations to determine if the planet’s orbit is actually stable.

“It is not clear how this planet ended up on its wide orbit in this extreme system ... but it shows there is more variety out there than many would have deemed possible,” Wagner said.

The planet was detected using the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope in northern Chile. (rtr)

SEVILLE - An airplane powered solely by energy from the sun took off from southern Spain early on Monday on the penultimate leg of the first ever fuel-free round-the-world flight.

The single-seat Solar Impulse 2 lifted off from Seville at 0420 GMT en route for Cairo, a trip expected to take 50 hours and 30 minutes.

The plane has more than 17,0000 solar cells built in to its wings and travels at a cruising speed of around 70 km per hour (43 mph).

On its journey, which began in Abu Dhabi and is due to end there, it has been piloted in turns by Swiss aviators Andre Borschberg and Bertrand Piccard. According to him, the public awareness of not throwing rubbish into the forest is the main key to the issues.

“The BKSDA alone is unable to take care of the rubbish at the location. Hopefully, all parties can take part,” he explained.

Sulistyo also added that the problem of rubbish in the forest area does not only occur in Kintamani.

Almost all regions experience similar problem. To maintain forest area so that it remains clean of trash, he admitted to have repeatedly called on people not to throw rubbish in the forest area any time.

Founder and restaurateur, David Kearns recently told us at an interview that the Happy Chappy Express in Berawa is merely the first in the long lines of Happy Chappy Expresses that are currently in the pipeline, featuring the same concept, layout and menu as the new Express outlet in Berawa.

Berawa’s Happy Chappy Express is dedicated to takeaways and casual dining. But regardless, both locations are consistently living up to its tagline; “Real Good Chinese Food” and diners should expect no less.

The outlet seats about 50 persons max, and features the same décor and ambience as the first Happy Chappy in Seminyak but unlike its sister location that promises an entire dining experience as a package, the Express in Canggu focuses on its fabulous menu offerings and in-and-out dining concept with the same great taste and amazing quality. “All your favourite dishes, you can find at Happy Chappy Express,” David said. Takeaways are great for cosy nights in, or to fill your ravenous bellies with a bottle of Bintang after a day of surfing and sunbathing. ‘Secret Life of Pets’ Debuts to Massive $103.2 Million

LOS ANGELES - “The Secret Life of Pets” dominated the weekend box office, racking up a massive $103.2 million and launching the first new franchise of the summer.

Its success is a feather in the cap for Illumination chief Chris Meledandri, confirming his status among the ranks of animation giants.

The family film, which explores what dogs, cats and other animal companions do while their owners are busy at work, cost an economical $75 million to produce, roughly half of what most studios spend making animated movies. Universal is backing the picture, which launched across 4,370 locations.

“Illumination just has a way of creating ‘want to see’ movies,” said Nick Carpou, Universal’s domestic distribution chief. “They make movies that resonate with audiences.”

And ones that spawn toylines.

The cuddly creatures that populate “Pets” seem tailor made to sell stuffed animals and t-shirts, creating a financial windfall for the studio.

The film deftly exploited dog and cat obsessed moviegoers to appeal to both parents and children. In the United States alone, Americans are expected to spend more than $62 billion in 2016 on their pets.

PARIS - The smell of teargas floating in the air near the Eiffel Tower proved an ominous sign on the night when France’s dream of a perfect soccer summer turned sour. The clashes at the Paris fan zone, where supporters trying to force their way in were pushed back by riot police, were relatively minor.

But such distractions were not part of a script which was then shredded on the pitch where Portugal gave a spirited rearguard performance to deny France their happy ending.

The French were desperate for some light relief when the tournament kicked off a month ago after strikes and violent protests against a labour law, with a state of emergency still in place after Islamist attacks that killed 130 people in the French capital in November.

France started the tournament in sluggish fashion but improved match after match, advancing to the final with a convincing 2-0 win over world champions Germany.
