Residents who are dog bite victims complained the expensive treatment given by Sanjiwani Hospital last Sunday (10/7) as much as IDR 476,000 which is too high for some people especially those from disadvantaged families and low income. Discharge of artists reaps protest Mangupura (Bali Post)—
Badung Government discharged a number of members of Gardita Budaya gamelan troupe belonging to Badung Government. Not only that, one of the artists who is also the staff of Badung Cultural Services and cocomposer of Sekar Jepun Dance, denoting one of the icons of Badung Regency, was also transferred. The decision seeming to have been made suddenly and without being announced finally reaped protests. One of the troupe members, IB Rai Dirga, Sunday (Jul 10), said that his party was very disappointed with the decision made by Badung Government. His party considered the troupe members were discharged disrespectfully. This retired staff of Education, Youth and Sports representing some of his friends claimed the action of Cultural Services was very arrogant.He explained the gamelan troupe was not closely associated to the Services. Similarly, an artist was not restricted by pension and he could work until completely unable to work. Supposedly, he said, the discharge
should be preceded by a meeting because a troupe was an organization. Comparable opinion was also expressed by I Wayan Widia, one of the composers of Sekar Jepun Dance, who had been transferred. Widia who is a genuine artist was transferred from Cultural Services to the Office of Family Planning. When confirmed separately, the Head of Badung Cultural Services, IB Anom Bhasma, argued the policies carried out in Gardita Budaya gamelan troupe was intended for regeneration in order to provide opportunities for younger artists who had the ability to strengthen the gamelan troupe. Moreover, the artists discharged had entered the age of retirement. “So, there is no intention to dismiss them disrespectfully. We even express our profound gratitude for the service provided so far,” he said. Cancellation of the Sun Princess cruise ship to drop off over 2,400 foreign tourists and crew this week was thanked by a number of tourism practitioners, especially restaurateurs in Karangasem. If the cruise ships anchored at Benoa Harbor, Denpasar, tourists who would take one-day tour to Eastern Bali would certainly eat in restaurants in Karangasem. Conversely, if the cruise ship berthed at Tanah Ampo Harbor as in the twice sojourns previously including several sojourns at Padangbai Harbor, tourists would only take halfday tour. As a result, they would have no time to eat, but only be taking excursion for a while and then resuming their journey to another region.
Meanwhile, if the ship anchored at Benoa Harbor, passengers of the cruise ship would surely take one-day excursion to Karangasem and eat in restaurants in the region of Karangasem. “As a matter of fact, the restaurateurs will be advantaged by tourists of the cruise ship anchoring at Benoa Harbor,” said an operator of hotel and restaurant in the area of Tirtagangga, Karangasem, Sunday (Jul 10). Operator of the restaurant did not deny that it was also good to open cruise ship quay at Tanah Ampo, Manggis. At least, Karangasem obtained a mega project from the central government and had a cruise harbor. Meanwhile, when it had been operated and charged berthing fees, there would be revenue for Karangasem Regency. Though the
harbor had not been accomplished causing difficulty for cruise ships to dock, at least people could use the quay to meet their hobby of fishing. As reported previously by Bali Post, the Sun Princess cruise ship with the length of 246 meters cancelled to drop off passengers at Tanah Ampo Harbor. Previously, a team had surveyed the Tanah Ampo cruise ship harbor, but the ship crew eventually preferred to anchor at Benoa Harbor. The team considered the Tanah Ampo was not representative because the harbor with fierce ocean currents had not been completed yet. In the meantime, the new pontoon bridge used twice had been destroyed by waves, whereas it was just constructed two months ago with the budget of IDR 475 million. (013)

The beautiful Yeh Gangga beach, Tabanan seemed disturbed as a pile of rubbish was sent here these past few days especially after Galungan day during an observation last Sunday (10/7). “It starting piling up again especially sent by the rain,” a resident explained. The rubbish spread from east to the west consisting of ceremonial items also plastics. With the rain, more rubbishes could come and could be a fortune to some people as

The suggestion of these helps are needed to lighten the farmers’ burden moreover most of Jembrana residents are from agriculture sector. Meanwhile for pests anticipation representatives will ask Agency to intensify socialisations as farmers stated there was hardly any. Not only for rice but also for other plantation like cocoa, coffee and clove. Turtle Smuggler Suspected in Lombok Denpasar (Bali Post) -
Even though three green turtles smugglers named I Gusti Ngurah Datia (35), Nyoman Sugira alias Cek Yu (54) and Gede Kole (30) has been captured, investigators of Bali Water Police seemed to have found a problem in revealing the case. Besides it is still unknown where these 18 green turtles were from which was found a week ago (4/7) due to the three accused won’t tell who supplied them, last Sunday (10/7) investigators stated that one of the smugglers, accused Sudir, escaped from Police and suspected to have ran to Lombok. While he’s being chased and if he’s not found, he will be listed in a missing person letter. “We will
make it this Monday (10/7). Just wait for the development,” an anonymous officer explained. It is revealed that these smugglers were using a new modus which is by using a casual quite high class car such as Toyota Avanza. Accused Cek Yu who bought the turtles stated a rented car such as this one is used to hide his illegal business. As told before, Bali Water Police managed to fail 18 green turtles smuggling after working with Indonesia Water Police in BKO lead by Head of Justice Section APC I Ketut Rai Suwandi. Two Balinese artists receive Culture Award Jakarta (Bali Post)—
Two Balinese artists consisting of Jero Puspawati, 78, an artist of Arja operetta and late Mangku Mura, a traditional painter of Kamasan style, respectively received the award as Maestro of Traditional Arts and the recipient of Culture Award 2011. The awards were delivered in person by Minister of Culture and Tourism, Jero Wacik. In the release received by Bali Post of Jakarta bureau, Sunday (Jul 10), Minister of Culture and Tourism on behalf of government delivered the award to 48 artists as Maestro of Traditional Arts and 18 recipients of Culture Award 2011 in the category of Arts Award, Preserver and Developer of Cultural Heritage and Child/Student/Youth having Dedication to Culture. According to Wacik, a great
nation was a nation respecting its heroes and a highly cultured nation was a nation respecting the services of its humanists. According to Minister of Culture and Tourism, the so-called heroes were not only those who struggled for maintaining the independence, but also figures who had extended their services in the field of culture, education, development, economy, and other fields. Maestros in Traditional Arts were the heroes in the field of culture because they had rendered a great service in passing the knowledge and skills rooted in the sublime values of the Indonesian national culture to younger generation, so that tradition of the arts did not come to extinction. Since 2007 to 2011, Ministry of Culture and Tourism had given the awards to 48 maestros of traditional arts from various regions across the country. Symbolically, the awards were handed over to 6
people as representatives of the Maestros in Traditional Arts. 102 missing after boat sinks in Russian river Associated Press Writer
MOSCOW — Emergency officials say that 102 people, including dozens of children, are missing and at least one is dead after a passenger boat with over 180 people onboard sank in the Volga River on Sunday. The double-decker vessel went down some 3 kilometers (2 miles) away from the nearest bank in the giant Kuibyshev reservoir on the Volga River some 450 miles (750 kilometers) east of Moscow, the Tatarstan region emergency ministry said. The depth at the site was 20 meters (65.62 feet), it said. The spokeswoman for Emergencies Ministry in Moscow, Irina Andrianova said there were 135 passengers and 47 crew onboard when the double-decker went down. Authorities say a riverboat rescued some 75 passengers, while a lifeless body of an unidentified woman and one injured man
were sent to a hospital. Other ships did not stop to pick up people, a survivor said. “Two ships did not stop, although we waved our hands,” the survivor, a man in his 40s who arrived on the riverboat told Russia’s Vesti 24 television as he stood amid weeping passengers, some of them wrapped in blankets. Vesti 24 quoted another survivor as saying that the boat sank “tilted to the right and sank within minutes.” Some 30 children gathered in one of the cockpits minutes before the sinking, another survivor told the Interfax news agency. Emergency teams and divers from neighboring regions rushed to the site of the tragedy, and Tatarstan’s leader Rustam Minnikhanov interrupted his vacation to return to the region. Earlier, officials said 15 people were missing. It was unclear what caused the discrepancy in the accounts.

NICOSIA, Cyprus — A huge explosion — likely sparked by a brush fire that set light to containers of gunpowder — tore through a Cypriot National Guard naval base Monday, causing widespread damage and leading to extensive power cuts, the Defense Ministry said. At least 10 people were feared dead. The ministry said the explosion occurred at the Evangelos Florakis Naval Base on the Mediterranean island’s southern coast at around 6 a.m. (0300GMT). State radio said the dead included two Cyprus navy sailors, two soldiers and five
firefighters. State broadcaster CyBC said 59 people had been injured, including two who were seriously hurt but whose lives were not in danger. There was no official death toll. “We were devastated by this event, not so much by the material damage, but by the loss of human lives and the injury of many of our compatriots,” said President Dimitris Christofias, who visited the naval base after the blast. He described the scene at the base as a “a catastrophe of biblical proportions.” A Defense Ministry official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation was
not complete, said the blast appeared to have been caused by a brush fire that broke out nearby and spread to the base. The fire ignited gunpowder stored in containers that Cypriot authorities confiscated in February 2009 from a ship sailing off its coast. The ship, the Cypriot-flagged Monchegorsk, had been suspected of carrying the gunpowder from Iran to Gaza. Fire department spokesman Leonidas Leonidou said firefighters received a call at 4:27 a.m. saying the fire was inside the base and near the containers. “Whether it started on or off the base, and how it started, we cannot say,” he told the AP.

When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

its suspects, can use Nasaruddin‘s explanations to enter into other cases which were still undisclosed. He said that the KPK should have doubts in investigating the case. Febri said that the role of police in the Nazaruddin case should be more on assisting the KPK only in speeding up the handling of the fomer PD treasurer case. “If Nazruddin is arrested, no matter who made the arrest, Nazaruddin should be under the control of KPK which is under the control of the people,” the ICW activist said. The 19 SMP3EI projects included the expansion of Bali‘s Ngurah Rai airport worth Rp1.2 trillion and construction 9,981 km of Sumatra‘s Fibre Optic Nusantara Super Highway Ring valued at Rp87.4 billion. Others are the Java-KalimantanSulawesi-Denpasar-Mataram fibre optic project worth Rp86 billion, the Mataram-Kupang Cable System worth Rp6.8 trillion, Floating Storage and gas project Unit in West Java valued at Rp500 billion, construction of two units of 3.500 DWT tanker ships in Surabaya and one unit in Lampung worth Rp109.49 billion.

Having performed intensive efforts for rabies management, 222 villages of them had been declared free from rabies cases. It indicated the number of villages categorized to have not been free from rabies amounted to 44 villages. Head of Bali Animal Husbandry Services, Putu Sumantra, told Bali Post about the matter last Sunday (Jul 10). According to Sumantra, 222 villages were declared free from rabies cases based on laboratory test results showing no cases of rabies at the villages during the past two-nine months. At the end of 2011, his party targeted the number of villages infected by rabies remained 10 villages only. Furthermore, at the end of 2012, all villages in Bali were expected to have been free from rabies cases and in 2015 Bali would become a rabies-free province. “At this yearend, we expect the infected villages will be fewer than 10. Of course, it can only happen by equally carrying out mass vaccination to the existing dogs. Then, the stray dogs and cannot be vaccinated should be handed over to government for further proper handling,” he said. To accelerate the achievement of rabies-free Bali in 2012, he said, Bali Government together with all regencies/city throughout Bali should carry out a mass vaccination of the second phase to pet dogs of Balinese people. Based on recent data, 92,858 dogs in Bali from the estimation reaching 340,000 had got mass vaccination of
the second phase. In details, Denpasar City could have vaccinated 15,061 dogs, Badung (13,407), Klungkung (4,058), Bangli (14,662), Karangasem (10,131), Buleleng (13,113), Jembrana (13,958) and Tabanan (8,283). Meanwhile, Gianyar Regency had not started its mass vaccination of the second phase. “Currently, the process of mass vaccination of the third phase is still under progress. Next year, we are also going to hold a mass vaccination of third phase and then resumed with the fourth phase in 2013,” he explained. Meanwhile, mass vaccination of the second phase for the city of Denpasar had been successfully completed on Sunday (Jul 10). According to the Head of Denpasar Animal Husbandry, Fisheries and Maritime Affairs, Dewa Made Ngurah, the mass vaccination was held in rotation from June 11, 2011 in each subdistrict where the last was targeted in North Denpasar. “Mass vaccination is carried out every Saturday and Sunday starting from South Denpasar Subdistrict, then West Denpasar, East Denpasar, and ended in North

In addition, the team also captured the stray animals by means of net to be vaccinated. DENPASAR - A total of 39,784 Singapore tourists visited Bali in the first five months of 2011, jumping 33.32 percent from 29,852 in the same period last year. “The significant increase sends Singapore to eighth from ninth place among the top ten sources of foreign tourist arrivals in the resort island,” Head of the Bali Provincial Statistics Office Gede Suarsa said here on Sunday. Last year, 97,402 Singapore tourists visited Bali, a 73.96 percent surge from 55,992 a year earlier. “Singapore is one of the potential market for Bali tourism. Hopefully, more and more Singapore tourists will visit Bali in the years to come,” he said. He said the Singapore tourists accounted for 3.78 percent of the overall tourist arrivals in the five months through May which reached 1.05 million, up 6.61 percent from 992,335 in the same period last year. Australia remained on top as the biggest source of tourist arrivals in Bali in the first five months of 2011 with 275,975 tourists, up 29.34 percent from 231,361 in the same period last year. China trailed behind in the second place with 87,038 tourists, a 4.19 percent increase compared to 83,535. In the third place was Malaysia with 65,950 tourists, jumping 25.41 percent from 53,383, followed by South Korea with 48,852, up 0.45 percent from 48,631, Britain with 39,963, up 31.74 percent from 30,335, France with 38,426, up 8.37 percent from 35,264 and Russia with 35,853, up 25.72 percent from 28,518.

DENPASAR - Star-rated hotels in Bali saw their average room occupancy rate fall 1.13 percent to 62.90 percent in May from 64.03 percent in April. “The room occupancy rate is closely related to the number of foreign and domestic tourists visiting Bali,” Head of the Bali Provincial Statistics Office I Gede Suarsa said here on Sunday. More than 1.05 million tourists visited Bali in the first five months of 2011, up 6.61 percent from 992,335 in the same period last year, he said. In May alone, 209,058 tourists visited the resort island, up 2.79 percent compared to the same month last year. But it fell 6.96 percent from April 2011. Gede Suarsa said Denpasar took the lead in terms of hotel room occupancy rate with 65.31 percent, followed by Gianyar 56.87 percent, Karangasem 49.49
percent, Tabanan 41.11 percent and Buleleng 25.12 percent. The other three districts, Jembrana, Bangli and Klungkung do not have star-rated hotels. He said foreign tourists‘ length of stay at star-rated hotels averaged 3.27 days, longer than that of domestic tourists which reached 2.86 days. Four-star hotels recorded the highest room occupancy rate of 64.94 percent, followed by twostar hotels 63 percent, five-star hotels 62.49 percent, three-star hotels 62.29 percent, and one-star hotels 60.26 percent. Non-star hotels meanwhile had an average room occupancy rate of 32.53 percent, with the highest room occupancy rate of 55.94 percent recorded in Badung, followed by Jembrana 29.84 percent,Tabanan 26.80 percent, Gianyar 30.50 percent, Klungkung 44.37 percent, Bangli 17.99 percent, Karangasem 17.66 percent, Buleleng 23.44 percent and Denpasar 32.99 percent.

The lower-than-expected domestic rice supplies due to unfavorable weather prompted the government to make every effort to save rice stocks, he said. “Of course, we will do it more carefully, including importing rice to strengthen our stocks. Let’s await further developments. What is clear, we will open the option to import rice,” he said. He made it clear there were three factors underlying the government’s plan to import rice, namely rice price
movement, domestic output and stocks. “Our rice stocks fall short of the target. Obviously, we have set ourselves the target of achieving a rice surplus of 10 million tons,” he said. He said the country now had rice stocks of 1.6 million tons, while the government needed 280 thousand tons per month as subsidized rice for the poor. Asked about an increase in the price of rice ahead of the fasting month of Ramadhan, he said it was something normal.

INGREDIENTS: 1 whole duck, weighing about 2 kg 8 cups coconut milk 2 lemon grass, bruised 2 salam leaves 1 tbsp salt 1 tsp black peppercorns, crushed fried shallots SPICE PASTE: 12 shallots, peeled and sliced 6 cloves garlic, peeled and sliced 4 red chilies 2.5 cm galangal (laos), peeled and sliced 2.5 cm kencur, peeled and sliced 5 cm fresh turmeric, peeled and sliced 2 tsp coriander, crushed 3 candlenuts 1 tsp dried shrimp paste ¼ tsp black peppercorns, crushed pinch of freshly grated nutmeg 2 cloves 3 tbsp oil PREPARATION: Cut the duck into 12 pieces and pat dry. Prepare the spice paste by grinding or blending all ingredients except oil. Heat the oil and sauté the spice paste for 2 minutes. Add the duck, increase heat and sauté for 3 minutes, stirring frequently. Add the coconut milk and all ingredients except fried shallots and simmer, uncovered, until the duck is tender and the sauce has thickened. Garnish with fried shallots and serve with white rice. SYDNEY — Australia’s tax on carbon emissions will cost Qantas 110 million to 115 million Australian dollars ($118 million to $123 million) for the 2013 financial year and lead to an increase in passenger fares, the airline said Monday. The flagship Australian carrier is one of the first of the nation’s major companies to release details of the financial impact of the tax, which will force the 500 worst polluters to pay AU$23 for every ton of carbon they emit. ATHENS - Greece on Monday will announce the team that will head its privatizations agency set up to undertake billions of euros in asset sales to help pay down public debt, a finance ministry official said. Athens is under pressure from its international lenders to sell stakes in key state firms, aiming to raise 50 billion euros ($71.5 billion) from privatizations by 2015 to pay down its debt mountain. The divestments, a condition for a second European Union/International Monetary Fund bailout for Greece after a 110-billion-euro rescue last year, start this year aiming to meet a 5.0 billion euro target. “The finance minister will an-
nounce the board structure of the privatizations agency on Monday,” the official told Reuters, declining to comment on names appearing in Monday’s press. On Friday, a banking source told Reuters Eurobank executive Costas Mitropoulos would head the privatizations agency as managing director. Mitropoulos currently heads Eurobank Equities, the investment arm of Greece’s second-largest lender EFG Eurobank. Asia rates have room to rise beyond inflation peak Reuters
SINGAPORE - Asia’s emerging market central banks will need to keep ratcheting up interest rates well after inflation peaks to prevent higher prices from seeping into corners of the economy where they are much harder to dislodge. Two months after global oil prices began to subside from a spike fed by Middle East unrest, the worst appears to be over for China, Indonesia, and a handful of other Asian economies that struggled to contain inflation this year. But it may be only a short-lived reprieve. Home-grown inflationary pressures are building, stemming from tight labor markets, rising property values and growing domestic demand, meaning rate rises may continue at least through 2012. China is the country to watch. Not only is it the biggest player on the block, but it has become a role model for some other policymakers in the region and a bellwether for investor sentiment on Asian emerging markets. “We do expect inflation to roll over in the coming months,” Frederic Neumann, co-head of Asian economics research at HSBC, said in a telephone interview from Hong Kong. “But make no mistake, there is underlying inflation that will not disappear in China.” Neumann thinks last week’s interest rate hike from the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) will be the last of the year but far from the final move of the tightening cycle. A slim majority of economists polled by Reuters on Thursday predicted otherwise, calling for one more one-quarter percentage point increase in bank lending rates by year end. Benchmark interest rates across Asia remain well below levels that prevailed before the financial crisis exploded in 2008, which argues strongly for more tightening. In India, South Korea and Malaysia, for example, interest rates are running below annual inflation. Neumann and others worry that easing price pressures may lull policymakers into a false sense of security. Indeed, Malaysia’s central bank held rates steady last week, defying expectations for a rise. That is one reason why econo-
mists are looking for evidence of inflation lurking beneath the surface. Similar to the way U.S. economists strip out food and energy prices to focus on “core” inflation, Asia economists are differentiating between cost pressures emanating from globally traded commodities and those tied to domestic factors. A simple headline-versus-core comparison is not as useful in emerging markets because food and energy consume a much larger portion of household budgets than in advanced economies. Focusing on home-grown versus imported inflation can offer clues about which way inflation is headed, and reveal hot spots that might otherwise be masked by moderating headline rates. China’s annual inflation hit a three-year high in June, data released on Saturday showed. Falling world commodity prices suggest that may be as hot as it gets, at least for this year. International crude futures prices are down 15 percent since May 2. Surveys of purchasing managers show China’s factories getting some relief on raw materials costs. Australia looks set for a bumper wheat crop after several disappointing harvests, U.S. corn supplies appear ample, and India’s monsoon season started early. The trouble is, just about everything else is heating up. Non-food inflation rose 3 percent in June from a year earlier, the biggest gain since records began in 2002. A breakdown of China’s inflation data shows swift gains this year in categories such as consumer goods, clothing and home appliances and maintenance. Chi Sun, a China economist at Nomura in Hong Kong, sees evidence of “structural” shifts in inflation that will persist long after global price pressures subside. Rising land prices and labor costs mean domestically produced food prices may continue to climb even if bumper harvests abroad bring down global markets, she said. Then there is China’s mediumterm economic policy, laid out in its recent five-year plan. Among Beijing’s goals is to raise the minimum wage by at least 13 percent per year, totaling 84 percent by 2015. Rising wages are part of the reason why Nomura sees one more PBOC rate hike this year, and four in 2012.

Rihanna escapes fire during Dallas show LOS ANGELES - Rihanna lit up Texas when a fire broke out on stage during her “Loud” tour stop in Dallas. Sparks flew and smoke sizzled in the packed American Airlines Center on Friday night as Rihanna was ushered off stage. No injuries were reported. The crew quickly came in to put out the fire, with Dallas firefighters following shortly thereafter to survey the scene, according to NBC in Dallas. The accident occurred following a particularly off-night, in which the “Rude Boy” singer was reportedly an hour late to kick off her concert. Rihanna responded on Twitter on Friday night to address her disappointed fans: “DALLAS!!! We set the stage on FYAH tonight!!! LITERALLY!!! I’m so pissed, I was having so much fun wit yall too!!! I gotta come back man!!” She later tweeted that she would be attending a production meeting to figure out exactly what happened, although the accident seems a result of the show’s elaborate pyrotechnics.

Taiwan to tighten laws banning shark fin hunting Taiwan, one of the world’s major shark catchers, announced plans on Sunday to tighten measures against hunting the ocean predator for its fin, the island’s top fisheries official said Sunday. Taiwan fishermen are already barred from tossing sharks back into the water to die after slicing off the fin — a delicacy in Chinese cuisine — and are required instead to ship back the carcass. But the measures have failed to stifle criticism from conservationists who say loopholes in the law allow finning to continue. Under new laws to take effect early next year, it will be an offence to remove a shark’s fin onboard a fishing vessel. “Any violators may be fined, barred from leaving ports, have their catches confiscated or even have their fishing boat licences revoked,
depending on how seriously they contravene the measures,” Fisheries Agency chief James Sha told AFP. Sha defended local fishermen, insisting that, unlike their counterparts in Africa and Southeast Asia, they are unlikely to toss the bodies of the sharks into the water as feared by some conservationist groups. “They have no reason to dump the meat of the sharks as local con-
sumers eat them and they can be sold here at good prices here,” he said. The new measure has been welcomed by the Environmental and Animal Society of Taiwan (EAST), which estimates that up to four million sharks are slaughtered in Taiwan each year. Environmental groups estimate that up to 73 million sharks are killed each year around the world for fins, leading to declines of up to 90 percent of some species of sharks — which have plied the oceans since the age of the dinosaurs. Despite campaigns from activists, demand for shark fins is seen as growing as China becomes increasingly prosperous.

The almost 100 percent illumination of the country’s highways can indeed be seen from space with a telescopic lens, said European Space Agency (ESA) spokesman in the German city of Cologne. But down on earth, the mood is changing and Belgium soon may not shine so brightly. Almost no other country on earth can currently afford such a luxury, and as energy-saving and cost-cutting measures bite, even Belgium is beginning to consider a switch-off. Another exception is its tiny but wealthy neighbour, Luxembourg, which too offers almost 100-per-
cent lighting on its 150 kilometres (93 miles) of highways. Belgium currently turns on 335,000 lights fitted to 150,000 lampposts on its motorways and main roads every evening. In the economically struggling southern French-speaking region of Wallonia, 750 kilometres of the 860-kilometre grid are lit up at night. In the wealthier Dutchspeaking north, Flanders, the roads are 100 percent illuminated, according to transport ministries from both regions. But officials are beginning to look at the cost. Cash-strapped Wallonia last year paid out 9.5 million euros for 105 gigawatthours of electricity for road lighting — to produce that amount of electricity a standard nuclear reactor would need to run for about four days.

DRESDEN, Germany — The Americans are moving on to the semifinals after one of the most riveting games in the history of the Women’s World Cup — beating Brazil 5-3 on penalty kicks after a 2-2 tie. Abby Wambach tied it with a magnificent, leaping header in the 122nd minute, and goalkeeper Hope Solo denied the Brazilians again. “We believe we can win this tournament,” Wambach said. “I don’t know if you can write a better script.” For Brazil, it is yet another disappointment at a major tournament. And this one is sure to sting more than any others because Marta had it won for the Brazilians on Sunday, scoring her second goal of the game in the second minute of overtime for the 2-1 lead that would have sent the Americans to their earliest exit ever. But Erika stalled when she went down on a tackle, and the delay added three minutes of stoppage time to the game. That was all the time Wambach and the Americans needed, after pushing themselves to limit while playing a woman short from the 66th minute on. Two minutes into stoppage time, Megan Rapinoe sent a blast of a cross from the left side that Andreia didn’t come close to getting her hands on. Wambach, one of the best players in the world in the air, made contact and with one furious whip of her head, buried it in the near side of the net. Wambach let out a primal scream and slid into the corner, pumping her fists, quickly being mobbed by her teammates. It was the latest goal in World Cup history. “I have not many words for this,” Wambach said. “I am so happy.” The Americans, shooting first, made their three penalty kicks only to have Cristiane and Marta easily match them. But then it was Daiane’s turn — the same Daiane who’d given the U.S. a 1-0 lead with an own goal in the second minute of the game. She took a hard shot, but Solo stretched out and batted it away. Though the U.S. still had to make two more, the celebration was already starting. After Rapinoe smoked the net with a blast and Ali Krieger converted hers, the Americans raced onto the field, their joy only matched by that of the pro-American crowd of 25,598. Wambach tackled Solo and U.S. coach Pia Sundhage even broke out her air guitar when AC/DC’s “You Shook Me All Night Long” began to play. Shake the tournament, the Americans did. The win came exactly 12 years after the Americans on a penalty-kick shootout against China to win the title at the Rose Bowl. A Davis Cup quarterfinal against Spain set deep in the heart of Texas, a hard surface that was supposed to complement their big hitters and a rowdy crowd of 16,000 ready to cheer them on. None of it mattered to the feisty, passionate and inspired Spaniards, who tore through the singles matches undefeated to build an insurmountable 3-1 lead, denying Roddick a chance to win it in front of his hometown fans. SAINT-FLOUR, France — Team Sky rider Juan Antonio Flecha was struck by a car late in Sunday’s ninth stage of the Tour de France, sending the Spaniard flying into Dutch cyclist Johnny Hoogerland and bringing them both down. Flecha had cuts to his legs and arms but got back on his bike. Hoogerland also remounted his bike and continued racing. The Tour car was parallel to
Flecha before, the driver seemingly misjudging how close it was to the Spaniard and turning into him. He was knocked from his saddle and collided with Hoogerland, who flew into a ditch. The 33-year-old Flecha’s jersey was shredded on the back and blood dripped from his knee and elbow. Despite the heavy fall, he rode at a decent pace upon resuming racing. By sheer luck, Hoogerland escaped a potentially horrific injury as he was sent flying narrowly over a
barbed wire fence. The pair had been in a front group of five when the incident happened but both were soon caught by the chasing pack, Hoogerland appearing to have some difficulty as he pedaled. Earlier Sunday, a mass crash forced Kazakh rider Alexandre Vinokourov out of the race with a suspected broken leg. BEIJING — Yao Ming’s expected retirement could diminish the NBA’s once-burgeoning popularity in China, with many fans saying they would no longer watch games. “What’s the point of watching NBA now?” asked an online user called Lubingxia on Sina Weibo, a Chinese Twitter-like site. An online poll on Weibo by Monday lunchtime showed that 57 percent of respondents would stop watching the NBA after Yao’s retirement. The 7-foot-6 center is expected to announce July 20 at a news conference that he’s retiring from the NBA after nine seasons because of leg and foot injuries. He boosted the popularity of the basketball league in China and throughout Asia, spiking merchandise sales and TV ratings for games after the Houston Rockets made him the top overall pick in the 2002 draft. The 30-year-old Yao has missed 250 regular-season games
over the past six seasons. “He is one of the most influential people in today’s society — especially to those born in the ’80s,” said Ren Bo, a 25-year-old sports trainer. “It’s probably going to be a while until we see another Yao Ming.” Yahoo! Alonso follows ‘Pampas Bull’ as Red Bull-beater Reuters SILVERSTONE, England - Spanish matador Fernando Alonso followed in the footsteps of a veteran Argentine red ‘Bull’ on Sunday to beat the modern-day Red Bulls and give Ferrari a longed-for 60th anniversary present. Showing once again that Formula One can still deliver the most improbable of storylines, the Spaniard rolled back the ages with a Silverstone victory that was perfect in its symmetry. The fairy tale started before the race when the double world champion took the historic red Ferrari 375F1 of ‘Pampas Bull’ Jose Froilan Gonzalez around the same circuit where the Italian glamour team celebrated their first championship grand prix win with the Argentine in July, 1951. If he was delighted with the team’s first win of the season, and first since last October when he triumphed in South Korea, Alonso was also thrilled with the direct link
to the sport’s golden era. “I had two laps today with that car for the parade and it is part of the history of Ferrari,” said Alonso of the Ferrari owned by Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone. “It obviously means a lot for all the guys, the people working for Ferrari who are the sons or daughters of the guys that were here 60 years ago. “They are working in the factory, with the same mentality, with the same passion for racing that is in Ferrari’s DNA - of all the workers there.” Ferrari are the only team to have competed in every championship since the first in 1950 and their achievement in remaining at the top for decade after decade as the most successful team is remarkable. Sunday’s win was the team’s 216th from 821 races. They have failed to win at least one race a season only 11 times in that period and their last completely barren season was in 1993.
Frustrated Webber ignored team orders

FRUSTRATED Mark Webber admitted he ignored team orders not to overtake his Red Bull team-mate Sebastian Vettel during the final stages of Sunday’s British Grand Prix. The 34-year-old Australian caught German Vettel in the final laps and despite instructions from his team telling him to ?maintain the gap’, he mounted several unsuccessful overtaking attempts before settling for third behind winner Fernando Alonso. Webber, who famously remarked ?not bad for a number two driver’ after his victory at Silverstone last year, said he was unhappy with the team’s decision and had decided to ignore them. “I am not fine with it, no,” he said. “If Fernando (Alonso) retires on the last lap, we are fighting for the win. “Of course I ignored the team because I wanted to try and get a place. Seb was doing his best, I was doing my best. I wasn’t going to crash with anyone. “I try to do my best with the amount of one way conversation I was having - I was trying to do my best to pass the guy in front.” Webber played down talk of another favouritism row and suggested that if the situation had been reversed, Vettel would have responded in the same way. When asked if he was feeling like the number two driver again, he said: “Not really. “Four or five laps to go, they started to chat to me about holding my position. I wanted the points but I also wanted to get some more points as well. “I just wanted to race to the end and I’m sure if it had been the other way round it would have been like that as well.” Defending drivers’ champion Vettel, 24, said he understood why the team asked them not to race each other but conceded that he had enjoyed the battle. “I try to stay ahead, nothing wrong with that,” he said.
