SREBRENICA, BosniaHerzegovina – Weeping among endless rows of coffins, tens of thousands gathered Sunday in the eastern Bosnian town of Srebrenica to bury hundreds of massacre victims on the 15th anniversary of the worst crime in Europe since the Nazi era. A whole hillside was dug out with graves waiting for 775 coffins to be laid to rest at the biggest Srebrenica funeral so far. Still, that was less than a tenth of the total number of Muslim men and boys executed after Serb forces overran the U.N.-protected town on July 11, 1995, during the 1992-1995 Bosnian war. At the time, some 30,000 Bosnian Muslims had flocked to the U.N. military base in the town’s suburb of
Potocari for refuge. But when Serb forces came, outnumbered Dutch troops opened the gates. The Serbs separated out men and boys, putting them on trucks and carting them away, the vast majority never to be seen again. The Srebrenica memorial center now stands across the road from that former U.N. base. The bodies being buried Sunday were previously excavated from mass graves and identified through DNA tests. An estimated 60,000 people were at the memorial Sunday. Relatives mingled among the pits on one side and rows of green coffins on the other, looking for the names of their loved ones. Muslim prayers and weeping mixed with speeches of dignitaries condemning the crimes and calling for the perpetrators to be punished. Continued on page 6

Kunti Yadnya ballet closes the 32nd BAF Denpasar (Bali Post)—
Without being realized a month-long 32nd Bali Arts Festival (BAF) implementation taking the theme Sudamala: ‘to deepen the purity of conscience’ ending last Saturday (Jul 10), was closed by a colossal ballet performance entitled Kunti Yajña by Art Vocational School (SMKN) 3 Sukawati, Gianyar. Such art extravaganza that has resounded internationally was officially closed by Governor of Bali Made Mangku Pastika in Ardha Candra amphitheater of Denpasar Art Center. The closure was preceded by procession of prizes presentation for the winners in various competitions of the 32nd Bali Arts Festival and then followed by performance of colossal ballet of students and teachers from SMKN 3 Sukawati, Gianyar. Kunti Yajña Ballet recounted about the Amartha Kingdom where Kunti Devi organized a Deva Yajña, a ritual dedicated to sanctified ancestors who have been enthroned at supreme ancestral temple of Indraviprastha. All kings were invited to the ceremony, including the Gods in heaven, except the King Duryodana from Astina Kingdom. This made Duryodana very furious and wanted to destroy the Pandavas’ sacrifice. Duryodana asked for consideration to the Dronacharya to realize his desire namely to destroy the sacrifice held by Kunti Devi and the Pandavas. With feeling of very innocent, Dronacharya was forced to carry out the evil intention of Duryodana. Dronacharya suggested Duryodana to perform “Ndewa Sraya” namely invoking assistance to Goddess Durgha in order she could destroy the sacrifice of Pandavas. Having made mature preparation, Shakuni and Duryodana left for Setra Gandamayu graveyard to do meditation and ask for instruction to Goddess Durgha. In short, Duryodana’s petition was granted by the Goddess Durgha by giving a grace in the form of two fairy demons named Ogre Berawa and Ogress Jatisrana. Two demons along with evil troops, monster and others went to the kingdom in order to destroy the ritual at Amartha Kingdom held by Kunti Devi and the Pandavas. Soon after the ceremony of Pandavas could be destroyed, many people felt sick and died. Kunti Devi became very sad and then she approached Krishna to beg sugges-
tion how to resolve the calamity. Krishna with his supernatural power could see the power originated in the Goddess Durgha. Armed forces of Pandavas then got involved in a bitter struggle with the demons led by Ogre Berawa and Ogress Jatisrana. These ogres were very hard to beat, while Krishna was finally angry and then he called a coachman named Daruki. By riding his chariot led by Daruki, Krishna subsequently pursued the Ogre Berawa and Ogress Jatisrana to Durghalaya searching for Goddess Durgha. Goddess’ men ran helter-skelter, while Krishna with his chariot head straight for Durghalaya. When he was about to enter Durghalaya, Krishna was shocked and surprised because Lord Shiva appeared before him and then blocked his intention to meet Goddess Durgha. Lord Shiva told Krishna that Durgha-Shiva were single and could not deal with Krishna. Lord Shiva advised Krishna not to behave arrogant and was bold with Goddess Durgha. Otherwise, it could result in a huge catastrophe for Krishna. Let alone just one person of Krishna, millions of Krishna would mean nothing to deal with Goddess Durgha. After explaining the purpose and the frustration of Krishna, Lord Shiva then realized the resentment and bestowed him a weapon called Tebus Sala to exorcize Goddess Durgha. The exorcism rite was held by Sahadeva, the youngest son of Pandu because Sahadewa was a healer of the Gods. Sahadeva is derived from the word ‘Sada deva’ or ‘Usada deva’ standing for drug of the Gods. With the miracle of Tebus Sala and grace of Lord Shiva, the Goddess Durgha could be exorcized and returned to become a goddess in heaven named Goddess Uma or Goddess Parvati. In the meantime, on the last day of 32nd Bali Arts Festival was held a number of performing arts. At Angsoka Stage at 10:00 am was staged rindik (bamboo xylophone) art by Lege Sawitra art studio, Suwug Customary Village, Sawan subdistrict, Buleleng and at the same time was also held a performance by Human Puppet of Griya
Jelantik Art troupe, Delod Pasar, Sanur Denpasar at Ayodya Stage. Meanwhile, at night was staged the Gambuh Puppet by Werdhi Sentana Art Troupe from Dangin Sema Hamlet, Tumbak Bayuh Village, Mengwi-Badung at Wantilan Hall. The area of Denpasar Art Center was thronged by myriad of visitors at the closing ceremony of BAF. Such atmosphere was already visible from the morning until night. As has been known, the 32nd Bali Arts Festival was officially opened by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on Saturday (Jun 12) at Ardha Candra amphitheater. In the opening session was also presented a colossal ballet by the Indonesia Institute of Arts (ISI) Denpasar entitled Anggada Duta or Envoy Anggada. Meanwhile, Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the 32 nd BAF, IB Sedhawa, said the entire series of parades and performances were quite smooth. Community showed very high appreciation to the performances, both presented by the participating artists of Bali, outside Bali and overseas. The efforts to free the Art Center area from hawkers had been quite successful. However, there were some of them entering the area. In the seminar appeared several inputs from the art experts and cultural observers, where one of them was about the importance of making Bali as a world cultural center. Ultimately, security was also considered quite favorable. It could be accomplished due to the hard work of the security team and committees. Governor of Bali Made Mangku Pastika in his speech said that in general the implementation of BAF had been running well. The public interest to visit the BAF was very high. This condition showed the people’s appreciation to the high traditional arts. Therefore, the Governor hoped in order traditional arts could be performed once a month in the Art Center. The spirit of the artist in the art during the BAF event was very high, too. This spirit had to be developed in customary village because customary village was the hubs of art. Likewise, Governor did not forget to express his sincere gratitude for the participation of all parties for the successful implementation of the BAF. He expected the upcoming BAF could be better. Wayang Wong Griya Jelantik Sanur Stunned, Presented “Lata Mahosadhi” DENPASAR - Performed in the last day of 32nd BAF on Saturday (10/7), the Wayang Wong Girya Jelangik, Delod Pasar Sanur Village, Denpasar City, really stunned the audiences with its unique dance movements at the filled up Kalangan Ayodya where it was performed. The Wayang Wong drama dance involved 80 and more artists telling the story “Lata Mahosadhi” taken from the Ramayana story. It was told, Commander-in-chief (Senapati) Kumbakarna’s death made King Rahwana sad. Then Patih Kumba suggested that the king should make Meganada as the next Senapati to face the Ramadewa troops. Meganada was sure that he can kill Sri Rama as he was given a mighty arrow by his father, Wimohanasara. Meganada departed and blocked Ayodya troops’ way. Meanwhile Sri Rama’s side with the monkey troops feels glad as they killed Kumbakarna. But Rama was told to be aware as Meganada has become senapati and has a mighty arrow as a weapon. As Wibisana hoped, Rama was told to warn Sugriwa to prepare troops to face Meganada. Meganada troops then attacked Sri Rama’s troops. Meganada then arrowed the weapon which stabbed
Laksamana’s body. Sri Rama was saddened. To treat Laksamana, Wibisana suggested Rama to tell Hanoman to get a healing plant called Lata Mahosadhi as only this plant can heal Laksamana. Yet this plant is only in Himawan Mountain, and so Hanoman departed. As he got there he was confused as he doesn’t know what Lata Mahosadhi looks like. And so he picked up the mountain part that’s full of trees and gave it to Wibisana. Wibisana then took the plant which then blended and given to treat Laksamana. Laksamana was well again as his soul was saved from the mighty poison of Meganada’s weapon. According to the leader of Wayang Wong Griya Jelantik, Ida Bagus Raka and dance coordinator Ketut Suteja, this Wayang Wong drama dance is the only one surviving in Denpasar City. This wayang wong has existed since 1900. But it was gone for a long time and so no one knows it existed. Then since its first performance at Intaran Village, Sanur at year 2005, it was introduced to the public again. One of the pewayangan (things related to wayang [puppet shadow character]) symbol used was Sang Hyang Wenara Petak (Hanoman) which is sacred and placed at a saving shrine in Griya Jelantik’s Holy Temple. Yet the one used on Saturday was the duplicate. (08)

Japanese Dancers Mesmerizes The 32nd BAF has been a prestigious event for the Japanese artists especially dancers who are deeply in love with the arts and culture of Bali. Last Friday (9/7) evening, BAF shows two Japanese arts communities collaborating with Balinese artists to the festival goers. On the Ksirarnawa Open Theatre shows Mr. Show Seki and Cakra Dance Company from Japan collaborated with Yayasan Seni Suar Agung of I Ketut “Pekak Jegog” Suwentra and Bintang Band personnel Icuk on drums, Ari PW on bass and Jun Bintang on vocal. Besides their own performances, they showed how harmonically collaborated they can be without losing each of their identities. Sekaa Jegog Suar Agung “bites” through their Damar Hyang beats purposed to hope for security and success for the Balinese-Japanese show in front of God’s beam. The art community that’s been all over the world then presented an opening dance called Sekar Taman, Suar Agung dance which is their own great dance and Candra
Gangga dance. For the collaborations there were made up beating drums (kendang gae-gae) and modern dances from Cakra Dance Company, “Made in Bali” by Bintang Band and Suar Agung, “S+S” by Suar Agung and Show Seki also “Janger” by the three sides and many more collaboration pieces. Meanwhile Japanese dancers who joined at Sanggar Tari (Dance Group) “Wyarihita” mesmerized the audience at Art Center ’s Wantilan. Collaborating with Sanggar Swarakanti Singapadu, Gianyar by Made Wiriadnyana, S.Sn, the Sakura country residents spread their enchantment through
classic and creation dances. That night, Deni Inaba’s community take turns performing, showing their ability to dance Balinese dances. It was opened by Panyemmbrama continued by Taruna Jaya, Putri Angansuh, Oleg Tamulilingan, Puspa Warna, Bayan Nginte, KupuKupu Tarum, Tedung Sari and closed by creation dance Latha Mahosadhi. Head of Sanggar Wyarihita, Japan, Deni Inaba, stated the group she led has supreme vision and mission to develop and guide Balinese arts in Japan. This participation in BAF made her side wants to increase the relation between the two countries, “That’s our motto we hold on to at Sanggar Wyarithia, Japan.” (ian)

Police set Agus Sentosa as the suspect Denpasar (Bali Post)—
Investigators of Directorate of Criminal Investigation (Reskrim), Bali Police, are working hard thoroughly to investigate the allegation of fraud case related to the purchase of shares belonged to Puri Artha Renon (PAR). After the investigator set Dino Dinata as a suspect, now is the turn of the PT PAR’s boss, Agus Sentosa, whose status increased to become a suspect. Agus Sentosa was named as a suspect based on the results of continued investigation where investigators had found evidence that certainly had met the requirements. This was conveyed by Spokesperson of Bali Police, Gde Sugianyar, when asked for his confirmation, last Thursday (Jul 8). Sugianyar said Agus Sentosa named as a suspect based on the reports from Eddy Leo. Eddy Leo pointed Agus Sentosa to have committed fraud with a value of billions of rupiahs. “Today (last Saturday— ed) Agus Sentosa named as a suspect,” said former Chief of Balikpapan Metro Police. Further explained, Agus Sentosa up to now was under examination of
investigators at Directorate of Criminal Investigation, Bali Police. Obviously, Sugianyar said that investigators remained to deepen the information from relevant person. “Examination of Agus Sentosa is under progress. Surely, the status of Agus Sentosa has been increased from witness to suspect,” he told Bali Post in Press Room, last Saturday. Sugianyar added that stipulation of Agus Sentosa as the suspect was based on the existing evidence and had met the requirements pursuant to the Penal Code. Not only that, the investigators also collected a number of witnesses. “The evidence and testimony of witnesses gathered have strengthened the investigators to determine Agus Sentosa as a suspect. It has been in accordance with the applicable rules,” he said. Meanwhile, legal advisor of Eddy Leo, Agus Saputra, said investigators were expected to seriously handle the case. Because, not only Eddy Leo who had become the victims of fraud committed by Agus Sentosa. “There are still many other victims cheated by Agus Sentosa, especially in relation to
bad BG. On that account, we expect investigators should take further action to handle this case,” he said at the Bali Police Headquarters last Saturday. In addition, Agus Saputra said that investigators should arrest the related person. The action was in accordance with article 21 paragraph 1 of the Criminal Code. In other words, anyone could be arrested if he or she caused concerns, among others, eliminating evidence, escaping and repeating his or her actions. ”There should be no more other victims,” he hoped. As published previously, Eddy Leo was reported to Directorate of Criminal Investigation of Bali Police with accusation of fraud cases on the purchase of shares of PAR. As response of the report, Agus Sentosa was once probed and his status was as a witness. Not only that, the colleague of Eddy Leo namely Dino Dinata also reported Agus Sentosa to Bali Police with accusation of similar case. Additional Class for Singapadu Native Residents Gianyar (Bali Post) –
The village officials have done a data collection of student candidates who are Singapadu native residents and did not get into National Junior High School (SMPN) No. 2 Sukawati which there were 58 of them. And so Gianyar Education, Youths and Sports Agency then plans to add classes for them. This agreement was confirmed by Singapadu Village Chief, Tjok
Bawa Suwastika, S.E. last Friday (9/ 7) as apparently there were annoyed residents and someone threatened the agency. Tjok Bawa explained this has been discussed and there’s already a final decision on it. It is questioned now who is the person who threatened this situation. All village officials are making sure that this person is not a Singapadu native resident as they are on data already.
“We are worried about this as it can give appalling effects,” Tjok Bawa told the journalists. Singapadu has native residents and also from outside Singapadu. The data collection was done to be reported to the SMPN No.2 Sukawati as there’s a history connection between the two. One of them was the school being in a land owned by Singapadu village. (kmb16)

6,500 hectares of Bali’s forest proposed to become village forest Denpasar (Bali Post)—
Approximately 6,500 hectares of forest in Bali are proposed to become village forest where its management is handed over to customary village whose territory is adjacent to forest areas. Thousands of hectares of the proposed forests spread in different regions of four regencies namely Buleleng (3,000 hectares), Jembrana (2,500 hectares), Karangasem (6 hectares) and the remainder is located in Bangli Regency. Especially for the proposal of the forest use in Buleleng, Jembrana and Karangasem was stated to have passed the verification. Meanwhile, the proposal of forest use in Bangli had not been verified yet by the central government since Bangli Regency applied the proposal latest. Head of the Bali Forestry Services, AA Ngurah Buana, told this matter to reporters, last Thursday (Jul 8). According to Buana, forest area in Bali amounted to 127,721 hectares. Regulation of the Minister of Forestry (Permenhut) No: P.49/2007 told that the community living around the forest area was given the opportunity to manage the forest either with the status as production forest or protected forest. In other words, villagers were allowed to manage the forest area by persistently paying attention to the principles of environmental conservation. “For example, village A is given permission to manage the forest area of 80 hectares. It means they can make an effort in a forest area of 80 hectares only and may not touch other forest areas that are not included in the license,” he said while adding that forest management in Bali was based on customary village. Within the region, he said, community was allowed to plant long-term
crops along with intercropping beneath them that could produce at any time. Results of the forest utilization businesses fully belonged to the village community. Nevertheless, they were still obliged to replant the trees cut down. “Entire harvest would belong to the village. We from the Forest Service only limit the logging system. This principle must be obeyed and cutting of the plants in the forest area can not be done all at once. However, it should use selective logging system,” he added. Especially for the forest area having the status as protected forests, Buana confirmed that villagers were not allowed to cultivated plants of which wood could be utilized. They were only allowed to plant crops producing fruits such as candlenut, jackfruit or altingia whose resin could be taken. “Regulation in the area of protected forest is much more stringent than in production forests. People are not allowed to cut down trees for wood,” he said and added that management rights of the proposed 6,500 hectares of forest to forest villages would be provided to about 15 villages situated around the forest area. Related to reforestation efforts of the land/critical forest existing in Bali, Buana said that Bali Provincial Government establishing a synergy with the local government/ municipality in Bali had successfully regreened about 28,600 hectares of critical land from 2004 until 2008. It was said, a critical area in Bali in 2004 was recorded 55,313 hectares. Meanwhile, critical land area was successfully minimized to be 25,338 hectares at the beginning of 2009. “This means, during four years Bali had succeeded in re-greening about 63-73 percent of critical land,” he asserted. The eventual merging of the two kamas begets what is often called Sang Hyang Jabang Bayi or fetus-Balinese always assume that the soul comes from heaven that is why a baby in Bali is called dewa or gods during his first year of life to honor the soul. The ritual is beginning from pregnancy with the aim to fasten the soul in its body before birth. The seventh moth when the fetus is strong enough is a time for Magedong-gedongan or strength the soul in “new house” ceremony. It is a simple ceremony. When the baby is born, his/her ariari or placenta will get special treatment. It puts on clay pot then brings to
house compound. Baby’s father should wash it until clean from the blood then put it in a coconut together with some spices and some tools; it depends on the custom, before burry it in front of the house’s door. On the place where it buried will be put a cook’s cage or basket and candle or lamp to protect it from animal and unseen force. The fact this is a sign to community, there are a new baby in that house On the seventh days or depends on when the umbilical cord the ceremony is held to celebrate it. Just a simple ceremony, run by baby’s mother. The baby is then celebrate through tutug kambuhan or continuous to grow which fall on 42 days after birth. Commonly the parent will invite the priest to do the ceremony for the baby’s four siblings that company him when his born by giving special offering. Since this day baby’s parent is allowed to enter holly place again, before, since the birth both are not allowed to enter holy place, Balinese called they are on cuntaka or prohibited time. Mahmoud Abbas sounded determined not to return to the table unless Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu commits to an internationally mandated settlement freeze and agrees to pick up talks where they left off under the Israeli leader’s predecessor in December 2008. However, it could become increasingly difficult for him to stick to his position as the Obama administration pushes harder to revive the negotiations. Netanyahu hasn’t agreed to either demand, and has so far curbed but not frozen settlement activity. He insists negotiations should be held without any preconditions. Later this week, White House envoy George Mitchell is to meet with Abbas and is expected to lay out some gestures Israel is prepared to
make to bring Abbas back to the table, said an Abbas aide. The Palestinians were not informed about the nature of the gestures, said the aide, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to brief reporters on the issue. Israeli defense officials said Israel was considering expanding the role of Palestinian security forces in West Bank towns and removing additional checkpoints that hinder the movement of people and goods. They spoke on condition of anonymity because no final decision had been made. Any decision on resuming talks would not be made without Arab backing, the Abbas aide said. Arab foreign ministers are to discuss the fate of negotiations later this month, he added. In the absence of direct
talks, U.S. envoy George Mitchell has been shuttling between the Israeli and Palestinian leaders. Abbas said in a speech late Saturday that he has no incentive to resume direct talks. “We have presented our vision and thoughts and said that if progress is made, we will move to direct talks, but that if no progress is made, it (direct negotiations) will be futile,” Abbas said. “If they (the Israelis) say `come and let’s start negotiations from zero,’ that is futile and pointless,” Abbas added. Netanyahu reiterated Sunday that he is ready to move to direct talks immediately. “The goal is to promote the political process and to try to reach a peace settlement,” he said. “The condition is guarding Israel’s security scrupulously.” Netanyahu said in New York last week that if Abbas agreed to sit down with him in direct talks, then a peace agreement could be hammered out within a year.

RIO DE JANEIRO – An Air France passenger jet from Rio to Paris made an emergency landing in northeastern Brazil due to a bomb threat. All 405 passengers and 18 crew members were safely evacuated from Air France Flight 443 on Saturday night, said Jorge Andrade, a spokesman for airport authority Infraero. A spokesman for Air France in Brazil said the bomb threat was phoned in to Rio’s international airport by a female voice about 30 minutes after the plane took off. The control tower contacted the jet and the decision was made to land in Recife, the Air France spokesman said. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the matter. In Paris, Air France spokesman Jerome N’Guyen said a full inspection of the plane had been completed and nothing suspicious had been found. Passengers were taken to nearby hotels until the plane could take off again. This could not happen immediately because of regulations on rest time for flight personnel, but it was expected to leave from Recife at 6 p.m. and reach Paris Monday morning, he added. Solange Argenta, an Infraero spokeswoman at the Recife airport, said the flight originally took off at 4:20 p.m. and that the plane landed in Recife at 7:53 p.m.. Infraero said in a statement that after landing in Recife, the jet taxied to a secluded area of the airport and those on board were quickly removed. The airport was closed for about 30 minutes, and then reopened. Flight 443 was on the same route as an Air France jet that crashed in June 2009 off Brazil’s northeastern coast, killing all 228 on board. While no definite cause has been determined in the crash, authorities have repeatedly ruled out foul play.
SRINAGAR, India – A curfew was lifted from most of Indian-administered Kashmir on Sunday, but a strike called by separatists to protest against recent civilian killings kept shops and offices closed. Indian security forces have been struggling to control a wave of demonstrations in the Muslim-majority Kashmir valley after being accused of killing 15 civilians — many of them teenagers — in a month. A police officer who declined to be named told AFP the curfew had been lifted except in some restive parts of Srinagar, the summer capital of Indian Kashmir. The curfew
had been imposed in Srinagar last Tuesday to contain protests after three people were killed in firing by police and paramilitary troops. Much of Kashmir remained shut down on Sunday after hardline separatists urged people to observe a strike to protest against Indian rule of the region and the civilian deaths. Thousands of security personnel patrolled the deserted streets of Srinagar. Hindu-majority India and Muslim-majority Pakistan each hold Kashmir in part but claim it in full. The nuclear-armed nations have fought two of their three wars over the Himalayan region since the subcontinent’s partition in 1947.

1 person gored in Spain’s running of the bulls Associated Press Writer
PAMPLONA, Spain – A runner was gored in the leg and three others needed hospital treatment after a very busy fifth running of the bulls at Spain’s San Fermin festival on Sunday, doctors and officials said. Several other people received roadside medical treatment after tripping and falling in the path of six animals from the Miura ranch, renowned for breeding Spain’s largest and heaviest fighting bulls. Sunday’s run lasted three minutes, two seconds and was considered dangerous because the largest bull, a 1,444-pound (655-kilogram), red-colored Miura called Cachero, became separated from the rest of the pack. Cachero slipped on the dewmoistened cobblestones of the course, became disorientated among a mass of runners and his horn injured 37-year-old Juan Pedro Lecuona, a Pamplona resident who runs the course every year, the Navarra press office said. A 23-year-old Canadian was also among the injured, along with two Spanish men, aged 30 and 40, the government of Navarra said in a state-
ment. The injuries of these three were classed a slight, the statement said. Television images showed one young runner being knocked unconscious when struck by a large steer, used to help guide the bulls along the slippery 930-yard (850-meter) stretch from a holding pen on the edge of town to the central bull ring. He was treated at the roadside but not taken to the hospital. Crowds at Pamplona swell at the weekend each year as people arrive from other parts of Spain to enjoy the festival atmosphere. YAKAGHUND, Pakistan – The death toll from a suicide bombing and car bomb blast that devastated a tribal town has soared to 102 in one of Pakistan’s deadliest attacks, officials said Saturday. The explosions targeted a busy market in Yakaghund town in Pakistan’s northwest tribal belt on Friday, destroying government buildings and shops and leaving victims buried under the rubble. Local administration chief Rasool Khan said the death toll had jumped to 102, after he and other officials had earlier put the number of dead at 65. “Some bodies were recovered from the spot and some died in hospitals overnight,” he told AFP. Another local official, Mairaj Mohammad, confirmed the higher toll and said there were 98 people receiving treatment in different hospitals. “Some of them are in critical condition,” he said. It was the deadliest attack in Pakistan since a massive car bomb destroyed a market crowded with women and children in the northwestern city of Peshawar in October 2009, killing 125 people. Khan said the toll could rise further as rescue work was underway to recover victims who are feared trapped under pulverised buildings.
Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility for Friday’s blasts, saying the target was a gathering of pro-government tribal elders. Qari Ikramullah, a spokesman for Taliban militants in the region, said in a telephone call to AFP that the elders were meeting in an administrator’s office and planning to raise a lashkar, or tribal force, to fight the Taliban. “We will attack such gatherings in future also,” he said. A Taliban and Al-Qaeda-linked bombing spree across Pakistan has killed more than 3,500 people in three years since government troops besieged the radical Red Mosque in the capital Islamabad in July 2007. Friday’s blasts came just over a week after a double suicide attack on a Sufi shrine in Lahore, which killed 43 people. Witnesses said the huge explosions Friday damaged an administration office, shops, a jail and other buildings in the small town not far from the border with Afghanistan, where 140,000 US-led foreign troops are fighting the Taliban. The attack sent a pall of gloom over the town. Bodies wrapped in white shrouds were being brought to a local playground for funeral prayers, an AFP reporter saw. AMBON - One Indonesian was killed and two wounded in World Cuprelated violence as rival sets of fans clashed Saturday, police said Saturday. Violence broke out between two groups of villagers on Maluku island and several houses were set on fire. It was not immediately clear which teams the rival factions were supporting or how the villager died but Maluku police chief Totoy Indra was quoted by local radio as saying: “The clash was triggered by a celebration of a winning World Cup team in the area.” Indra said the wounded were being treated in hospital. He said the situation had returned to normal but the police were braced for further clashes.

JAKARTA - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono called for the continuation of fight against corruption despite the risks it may bring to the safety of anti-corruption activists. “Whatever the threats, challenges and obstacles faced by those carrying out anti-corruption tasks, this great mission must continue,” he said her Saturday after visiting an activist of the Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW), Tama S Langkun, who is being treated at Asri Hospital for wounds inflicted on him by unknown assailants recently. Tama is one of the ICW activists often disclosing alleged corruption in various government offices. Recently he was actively encouraging the disclosure of suspicious accounts belong-
ing to several high ranking police officers. Early on Thursday, on his way to his office, he was stopped and beaten up by several people causing him to suffer wounds that required treatment in hospital. The head of state said the fight against corruption was a noble activity useful to realize good governance. DENPASAR - A total of 35,264 French tourists visited Bali in the past five months of 2010, down 5.35 percent from the same period last year. Despite the drop, France remained one of the top ten countries in terms of tourist arrivals in the resort island, Head of the Bali Provincial Statistics Office Ida Komang Wisnu said here on Sunday. Even France ranked seventh after Australia, Japan, China, Taiwan, Malaysia and South Korea in May 2010 compared to ninth a month earlier, he said. Most of the French tourists came to Bali by direct flights and only 528 of them by cruise liners, he said. The French tourists were made up of 3.70 percent of the overall tourist arrivals in the province over the January-May 2010 period which reached 952,073, he said. Compared to the same period last year, the number of tourist arrivals in the year ending on May 31, 2010 rose 9.43 percent, he said. He said five of the top ten countries saw a significant increase in the number of tourists visiting Bali over the period while the number of tourists from the other five countries fell. The number of tourists from Australia rose 55.72 percent to 213,361 from 137,018, Taiwan 13.83 percent to 54,828 from 48,168, the Netherlands 45.89 percent to 30,388 from 20,829, Britain 3.83 percent to 29,862 from 19,495 and Singapore 53.18 percent to 29,862 from 19,495. In the meantime, the number of tourists from France fell 5.35 percent from 37,256 to 25,264, South Korea 7.03 percent from 52,311 to 48,631, Malaysia 8.26 percent from 56,192 to 53,383, China 2.67 percent
from 85,828 to 83,535 and Japan 24.71 percent from 132,122 to 99,473. The number of South Korean tourists visiting Bali was 48,631 during JanuaryMay 2010, down 7.03 percent from 52,311 in the same period last year. Despite the decline, however, South Korea remained in the sixth place after Australia, Japan, China, Taiwan and Malaysia, among the top ten countries of origin of tourists who came to Bali. The South Korean tourists constituted around 5.11 percent of the total of 952,073 foreign tourists visiting Bali in the first five months of 2010, up 9.43 percent from 870,029 in the same period last year. Wisnu said of the top ten countries sending tourists to Bali, five recorded significant increases, and five others declines. This year, Bali received 213,361 Australian tourists, up 55.72 percent from 137,018; 54,828 Taiwanese, up 13.83 percent from 48,168; 30.388 Dutch, up 45.89 percent from 20,829; 29,862 Britons, up 3.83 percent from 19,495; and 29,862 Singaporeans, up 53.18 percent from 19,495. In the first quarter of 2010, a total of 563,778 foreign tourists visited Bali, up by 14.95 percent from the same period a year earlier. Meanwhile, Indonesia’s Central Statistics Agency (BPS) said in the first five months of 2010, the number of foreign tourists coming to Indonesia reached 2.77 million. Head of BPS Rusman Heriawan said in Jakarta recently the total increased 14.59 percent compared to the 2.41 million in last year’s same period. “A total of 944,476 of them arrived in Indonesia by way of Ngurah Rai airport,” he said.
Anak Agung Ngurah Alit Wiraputra, the vice of Kadin, said “the government must act to respond the issue and there is a need to form a committee which consists of all elements in Bali. This is needed to reduce the negative effect of the increase of electricity fare. Bankruptcy can happen to most of the small industries in Bali. Kebal is the institution which consists of many elements that can give suggestion to the government. “The committee could consist of experts, businessmen, environment observer and others. They can give the best suggestion to the government to overcome the problem caused by electricity fare increase,” Wiraputra said. Kadin urged the government to establish Kebal immediately in order to solve the prob-
lem. “If the governor agree to form the Kebal then in a short time there will be real steps taken to assist the small industries such as providing the raw materials, and others,” he added. Other observers said that the small industries in Bali can overcome the problem but Wiraputra doesn’t’ want to guest. “We better safe than sorry,” he said. The local government can not cancel the increase in electric fare but they can work out the action to minimize the problems faced by the people because the increase in electricity fare. Wiraputra said “if Indonesian eceonmy is good then the increase will not affected business but currently, the economics condition in Indonesia is declining.” Previously, Wiraputra said that 150,000 small industries could suffer great lost from the increase in electricity fare.(kmb18)
HIV/AIDS infects 12 prisoners Antara
DENPASAR - Twelve prison inmates of Denpasar-based Kerobokan jail in Bali Province were positively infected with HIV/AIDS, head of the prison, Siswanto, said. “We keep monitoring their mental and physical condition seriously,” he said here Wednesday in response to the care for the HIV/AIDS-infected inmates. Siswanto said the HIV/AIDS-infected prisoners should not be isolated. Instead, they were given various working skills, including computer and English language, he said. “As part of the prison community, they should not be isolated. They have the right to live as normal people,” he said. The prison authorities kept monitoring the mental and physical condition of the infected inmates by providing them with sufficient food and medication, he said. “With the good care and working skills, we are motivating them to maintain their living spirit. They generally admit that they have more than one sexual partner,” Dr.Ida Ayu Miswaryati said last June. The head of Sanglah Public Hospital’s infected disease division said that at least 170 people had HIV/AIDS consultations with the hospital’s doctors over the past five months. However, there were only 153 who were positively infected, she said. Compared to last year, this year’s number of HIV/AIDS cases increased but there were less patients dying of this dangerous disease than last year, she said. Balinese Culture Bali allocates Rp1.6 billion to reforest denuded land Antara
DENPASAR - The Bali provincial government has set aside Rp1.6 billion in funds to reforest 500-600 hectares of denuded land this year. “The funds taken from the regional budget will be used to reforest denuded land in forest areas,” Head of the Bali Provincial Forestry Service Anak Agung Ngurah Buana said. The provincial government is determined to reforest denuded land inside and outside forest areas, he said.
“The reforestation program this year will target 500-600 hectares of denuded land inside forest areas. A variety of drought-resistant trees will be grown there,” he said. To date, the province has 25,338 hectares of denuded land found in eight of its nine districts. The denuded land is mostly found in Karangasem, Klungkung, Karangasem and Bangli districts. Through the reforestation program the denuded land can hopefully be reforested in stages, he said. He said various kinds of trees typical to the province, such as ma-
hogany, trembesi, and panggal buaya will be grown through the reforestation program to meet wood demand from small-scale handicraft industry. Bali now has 130,686 hectares of forest consisting of 95,766 hectares of protected forest (73.28 percent), 26,293 hectares of conservation forest (20.12 percent) and 8,626 hectares of production forest (6.60 percent). The forest is made up of 22 percent of the province’s land territory. Ideally, the forest should account for 30 percent of the land territory, he said.

Americans might like to use snappers. Whatever fish is used, it can be cut into small cubes or slices before frying. Heat a little oil in a heavy fryingpan, and carefully brown the fish in it. Meanwhile, in another frying-pan, fry the chopped shallots (or onion) and garlic until tender. Stir in the chilli, ginger, turmeric, coriander, lemon grass, salam, salt and tamarind water. Let this mixture simmer for 10 minutes, then put in the fish. Cover, and simmer for another 10 minutes.

This follows the deeply rooted belief that if a woman comes to the cemetery while a corpse is being carried there, there will be a disaster in the village, for example a landslide or a volcanic eruption. Such events have been frequent in the village’s history, but whether women had anything to do with it is a matter of opinion... You can visit both the village of Trunyan and the Kuban cemetery by chartered boat from Kedisan. Sadly, nowadays the boat trips are now blatant tourist traps, as touts and guides strongly urge you to donate your cash to the temple project or leave a donation for the dead. THE village of Trunyan is squeezed tightly between the lake and the outer crater rim of Batur, an almighty volcano in Kintamani. This is a Bali Aga village, inhabited by descendants of the original Balinese, the people who predate the arrival of the Hindu Majapahit kingdom in the 16th century. It is famous for the Pura Pancering Jagat temple, but unfortunately visitors are not allowed inside. There are also a couple of traditional Bali Aga-style dwellings, and a large banyan tree, which is said to be more than 1,100 years old. At Kuban sub-village close to Trunyan is a mysterious cemetery that is separated by the lake and accessible only by boat - there is no path along the steep walls of the crater rim. The village of Trunyan itself is situated at the edge of Batur Lake. This location is inaccessible except by boat, and it takes around half an hour across the calm waters. Getting to Lake Batur takes around two hours drive to the northeast of Denpasar along the main road to Buleleng and through Bangli Regency. Unlike the Balinese people, the people of Trunyan do not cremate or bury their dead, but just lay them out

BUSINESS ECB launches offensive on eurozone economic fears Agence France-Presse
FRANKFURT - The European Central Bank insists the eurozone will not fall back into recession, saying the worst of the debt crisis is past and other economies should now be fixing their public finances. ECB chief economist Juergen Stark told reporters last week: “It seems that the worst is over” after a key ECB loan deadline passed smoothly and German data showed industrial production in Europe’s top economy had soared in May. ECB president Jean-Claude Trichet cautioned that “it is still too early to declare the crisis over”, but added: “The latest signs that we are receiving from the economy are encouraging.” The ECB officials spoke at a Frankfurt gathering of analysts, academics and media against a backdrop of continued speculation over the eurozone’s future after a debt crisis that began in Greece and then spread to other weaker member states. The latest chapter in the crisis will be ‘stress tests’ of European banks to determine if they can withstand a major shock like the default of a key debtor or another serious economic downturn. Tests of 91 banks, accounting for 65 percent of the European banking system, are to be released on July 23 amid hopes they will ease tensions on markets where many investors fear the banks may have hidden some of their problems under the carpet. Meanwhile, pressure from the ECB and the markets has forced
eurozone governments to take sometimes draconian measures to put their public finances back on a sound footing, slashing spending to howls of protest. Authorities in the United States and elsewhere have argued it is too soon to tighten policy in this way however because it might provoke a “double dip” recession. “We must be flexible in adjusting the pace of consolidation and learn from the consequential mistakes of the past when stimulus was too quickly withdrawn and resulted in renewed economic hardships and recession,” US President Barack Obama wrote in June. Trichet and Stark fired a broadside at such views on Friday, with Trichet saying: “Just like consumers and countries, governments cannot live beyond their means forever.” He quoted John Maynard Keynes, an icon of those who advocate state stimulus, as saying in 1937: “Just as it was advisable for the government to incur debt during the slump, so for the same reasons is it now advisable that they should incline to the opposite policy.” Trichet noted taxpayers on both sides of the Atlantic had incurred risk equal to more than one-quarter of total annual economic output to prevent a financial meltdown and warned starkly: “We won’t do that twice.”
Stark called the debt crisis “a wakeup call” to eurozone governments, which he said were now serious about fiscal reforms and broader structural changes as well. “In leading economies in the world I don’t see this commitment to fiscal consolidation, I see the contrary,” the ECB economist said, adding that more fiscal stimulus “in the end will turn out not to be sustainable”. He also challenged a downbeat International Monetary Fund growth forecast for the eurozone released last week, saying: “We see a bias here, that the IMF has not caught up to the reality in Europe.” The Fund’s latest forecast is for 2010 growth of 3.3 percent in the United States, the world’s biggest economy, 9.2 percent in developing Asia and just 1.0 percent in the eurozone. “The IMF in my view is underestimating the strength of the recovery in the euro area” and other regions of the world, Stark said. Barclays Capital managing director Julian Callow told AFP he thought the ECB was “trying to strike a more positive note here which in turn should help to stabilise financial markets. “Trichet does not have the demeanour of someone who is very concerned about the unveiling of the bank stress test results,” he added.

Yoon also dismissed reports that a proposed tax on the world’s largest banks to curb excessive financial risk-taking, which has been discussed by the Group of 20 major economies, might have to be ditched due to differences. “The issue is being discussed very actively among member countries,” Yoon said. “Global cooperation can be kept alive if things are maintained within the standards,” he said, adding the views of each nation would be sought in time for the G20 meeting in Seoul in November.

The nation’s overseas shipments of items including electronic gadgets, shoes and textiles reached 137.4 billion dollars last month, up 43.9 percent from the previous year. The pace of growth was slower than in May when exports surged 48.5 percent, but was better than most analysts had expected. China posted a trade surplus of 20.02 billion dollars in June, up slightly from the month before, according to figures released by customs authorities. The figure compared with a trade surplus of 19.53 billion dollars in May and 1.68 billion dollars in April. Imports gained 34.1 percent year-on-year to 117.4 billion dollars, marking a slowdown from May when imports of raw materials and other products soared 48.3 percent. “Stronger than expected exports show that external weakness has not yet shown its full impact,” said Ken Peng, a Beijing-based economist for Citigroup. “Growth momentum is slowing down, but not as sharply as expected and this should keep policy stable for now.” The strength in exports may have been underpinned by steelmakers and other raw material producers accelerating shipments before the government scraps tax rebates on some prod-
ucts this month, analysts said. The yuan has strengthened 0.8 percent against the greenback since the People’s Bank of China pledged to loosen its currency controls on June 19. A stronger yuan will make Chinese shipments more expensive but help boost consumer spending by reducing the cost of imported products. In the six months to June, China’s trade surplus fell 42.5 percent on year to 55.3 billion dollars, which customs said showed the nation’s foreign trade was moving in a more “balanced direction”. The data come after Vice Premier Wang Qishan said on Monday that China must maintain stable growth in foreign trade and avoid volatility, noting global economic conditions remained “extremely complicated”. LOS ANGELES – The two-minute clip of Mel Gibson using a racial slur and calling his ex-girlfriend a “whore” during an argument are unlikely to be the last ugly words the public hears from the actor. RadarOnline.com, the celebrity website that posted the recording Friday, says there’s more where that came from. For 10 days, the site has posted written transcripts of secret recordings it said Gibson’s former girlfriend, Russian singer Oksana Grigorieva, had made. The snippet released Friday is the first audio of the confrontations that have been aired. The clip includes segments in which a voice that sounds distinctly like the Academy Award winner is heard telling Grigorieva that she is dressing too provocatively and that it would be her fault if she were raped. He uses the N-word at one point, and the recording is laced with his profanity. Shortly after the posting, entertainment news outlets reported that Gibson had been dropped by talent agency William Morris Endeavor, although that decision appeared to have been made days ago. The agency did not return phone calls and an e-mail seeking comment. David Perel, RadarOnline’s founder and executive vice president, told The Associated Press that the site
had heard “a substantial portion” of 30 minutes of recordings Grigorieva had made. Perel said more audio clips will likely be released in coming days. The site reported the 40-year-old made the recordings because she was afraid Gibson might harm her. Yet, there Brody is, transforming himself into a ruthless killer who hunts down aliens. “It’s surprising to me, sometimes, when people are surprised at my choices,” he told reporters at a recent gathering. “And it seems they are more surprised as of late. “But as an actor it’s been a conscious decision to do my best to not repeat myself, so that I keep the process for myself interesting and for the people that have seen my work. I’ve looked long and hard for an opportunity like this.” In fact, the 37-year-old said it was “a big coup, a big deal” for him to land the starring role of Royce, a mercenary loosely modeled after Schwarzenegger’s “Dutch” in 1987’s original “Predator.” But Brody was also very aware of the challenge involved in playing an action hero. He diligently worked-out and pumped iron before filming began. “I did feel that I had to make a physical transformation,” he said. “On one level it’s exciting for an audience to see that. I like to see that, even if the character’s villainous.

Want some 3G to go along with that DS or PSP? Popular gaming handhelds like Nintendo’s DS and the Sony PlayStation Portable already boast Wi-Fi antennas for online shopping, Web browsing and multiplayer matches, but now a Japanese wireless giant is floating the idea of a handheld console with 3G support when Wi-Fi isn’t an option. Wireless carrier NTT DoCoMo of Japan is “in talks” with handheld gaming manufacturers about baking 3G support into their next-generation consoles, the Wall Street Journal reports. Carrier president Ryuji Yamada didn’t go into detail about which gaming companies DoCoMo was talking to, but it’s pretty easy to guess the prime candidates: Nintendo, maker of the best-selling DS and the soon-to-be-released, 3Denabled 3DS, and Sony, which is behind the PSP and the PSP Go. Both the DS and the PSP already do Wi-Fi, of course, good for shopping for games or challenging fellow gamers to local or infrastructure multiplayer duels. But Wi-Fi won’t

Remote Easter Island set for total solar eclipse Agence France Presse
HANGA ROA, Chile – Tourists and scientists poured onto remote and mysterious Easter Island Sunday to watch a rare solar eclipse, a mixed blessing for the tiny Pacific community. An estimated 4,000 tourists, scientists, photographers, filmmakers and journalists flocked to the remote Chilean outpost of only 160 square kilometers (60 square miles), doubling the population of the barren island that already suffers from water pollution and deforestation. Conditions are anything but normal on Easter Island, deemed by astronomers the best place to witness Sunday’s alignment of Sun, Moon and Earth for a fleeting four minutes and 41 seconds. Some weather forecasts, however, warn of cloudy skies — potentially dashing hopes of a clear view here. The total solar eclipse will begin at 1815 GMT, when the umbra or shadow falls on the South Pacific about 700 kilometers (440 miles) southeast of Tonga, according to veteran NASA eclipse specialist, Fred Espanak. It will then zip in an easterly arc across the Pacific, eventually cloaking Easter Island and its mysterious giant statues at around 2011 GMT. Parts of the globe will be plunged into daytime darkness along a narrow corridor some 11,000 kilometers (6,800 miles) long across the South Pacific.
And the eclipse, in Tahiti for example, has a chance of upstaging even the start of the World Cup final between Spain and the Netherlands in South Africa at 1830 GMT. Superstition has forever been part of the cult of the eclipse. Throughout history, awe and dread — the birth or death of kings, victories or defeats, bumper harvests or gnawing hunger — have always attended that moment when the Moon slides in front of the Sun and darkness briefly cloaks the Earth at daytime. Easter Island Governor Pedro Edmunds Paoa told AFP the island “has the capacity to absorb this number of tourists,” similar to the influx in the austral summer in January. But authorities have increased security, especially around key heritage

Neither Yamada, the carrier’s president, nor the Journal article go into detail about how much a 3G service for handheld gaming consoles might cost, but I’d imagine something along the lines of AT&T’s prepaid 3G plans for the iPad, which deliver 2GB of data for $25 a month or 250MB for $15/month. Naturally, that would be on top of whatever smartphone data plan you’re

paying, not to mention any iPad 3G plans, etc. While I like the idea of being able to game online whenever and wherever I want to, the idea of paying for yet another wireless data plan doesn’t thrill me. The option I’m preferring these days for Wi-Fi-enabled gadgets like laptops, the PSP or the iPad are portable Wi-Fi hotspots like the Novatel Mi-Fi or Sprint’s 4G Overdrive, or smartphones like the HTC Evo 4G, the new Droid X, or the Palm Pre Plus, which can share their 3G data over Wi-Fi. Yep, you have to pay up for mobile hotspot data, but I’d rather do that than pay for multiple 3G data plans. Or, how about another option. Consider the Amazon Kindle, which comes with an embedded Sprint 3G receiver and a lifetime of free data. How about something like that for the DS or the PSP, with the free data subsidized by the manufacturer to give it a leg up over the competition? It’s an enticing prospect, and one that Nintendo president Satoru Iwata himself mentions in the Journal piece.

RIO DE JANEIRO – The bright pink color gives them a striking appearance in the muddy jungle waters. That Amazon river dolphins are also gentle and curious makes them easy targets for nets and harpoons as they swim fearlessly up to fishing boats. Now, their carcasses are showing up in record numbers on riverbanks, their flesh torn away for fishing bait, causing researchers to warn of a growing threat to a species that has already disappeared in other parts of the world. “The population of the river dolphins will collapse if these fishermen are not stopped from killing them,” said Vera da Silva, the top aquatic mammals expert at the government’s Institute of Amazonian Research. “We’ve been study-
ing an area of 11,000 hectares (27,000 acres) for 17 years, and of late the population is dropping 7 percent each year.” That translates to about 1,500 dolphins killed annually in the part of the Mamiraua Reserve of the western Amazon where da Silva studies the mammals. Da Silva said researchers first began finding dolphin carcasses along riverbanks around the year 2000. They were obviously killed by human hands: sliced open and quartered, with their flesh cut away. The killings are becoming more common, researchers and environmental agents say. Even the government acknowledges that there is a problem. It’s already illegal to kill the dolphins without government permission — as with all wild animals in the Amazon. But little is being done to stop it.

PORT ELIZABETH, South Africa – In pouring rain on a ragged field, Germany and Uruguay staged a match entertaining enough to be for the World Cup title. Too bad it was only for third place. Sami Khedira scored in the 82nd minute to give Germany a 3-2 victory and third place for the second straight World Cup. But the Germans had to survive a final-second free kick by Uruguay star striker Diego Forlan from just outside the penalty area. It ricocheted off the crossbar, and the whistle sounded. Rain-soaked players shook hands and awaited a medals ceremony that was not nearly what they wanted. The Netherlands and Spain will play for the championship on Sunday in Johannesburg. Germany coach Joachim Loew, his voice still hoarse from the flu, said his team was going home “with a very good feeling.” “We achieved more than we perhaps expected,” Loew said. Khedira’s header after the Uruguay defense failed to clear a corner kick by Mesut Oezil ended Uruguay’s hopes of beating Germany for the first time in 82 years. “We had hoped for more, and we did everything for it,” Khedira said. “This was some kind of final and we did everything for it. “We have a young team and set an exclamation mark here and can reach more.” Uruguay came from behind to lead 2-1 when Forlan brilliantly volleyed in Egidio Arevalo’s 51stminute cross for his fifth goal of the tournament. Germany defender Marcell Jansen tied it five minutes later with a header after goalkeeper Fernando Muslera misjudged a cross. In the dying moments, on a rain soaked pitch, Uruguay had one more opportunity. But Forlan, who has been especially dangerous on free kicks, hit the bar. “Obviously it’s something spectacular to be among the top four,” said Forlan. “If someone would’ve asked us at the beginning, we would’ve liked it. It’s something positive.” Uruguay has beaten Germany only once in 10 matches, in 1928. Germany beat Uruguay in the third-place match in 1970, the last time Uruguay reached the semifinals.
In its last three World Cup tournaments, Germany was runner-up in 2002 and third in 2006 at home. “Luckily, we won, because the disappointment over the semifinal was still there,” Bastian Schweinsteiger said. “We were behind and we rallied, that shows the character if this team. I am very proud of this team although I have tears in one eye because we did not reach the final.” Uruguay won the first World Cup in 1930 and also won it in 1950. Germany has won in 1954, 1974 and 1990. Thomas Mueller opened the scoring for Germany in the 18th minute, also his fifth goal at the World Cup. Edinson Cavani equalized for Uruguay in the 28th when he slid a shot past goalkeeper Hans Joerg Butt. Miroslav Klose’s aching back prevented him from playing for Germany and he finished the tournament with four goals and 14 for his career. He is one goal shy of Brazilian forward Ronaldo’s World Cup record and, at 32, doesn’t expect to play in 2014 in Brazil. Loew was forced to make five changes to his team. Defender Philipp Lahm and forward Lukas Podolski were out with the flu. Backup striker Mario Gomez also has the flu. In an action-packed match, Butt made two good saves on Luis Suarez and Forlan after his team’s second goal. South Africa’s first black president played a critical role in bringing the games to his country, but the Nobel laureate who turns 92 next weekend has yet to make it to a match. Many are aching to relive the moment at the 1995 rugby World Cup, when Mandela donned the jersey of South Africa’s victorious and mainly white Springboks, in a moment now seen as a symbol of national healing. Just hours before the closing ceremony in Soccer City, his foundation said no decision had been taken on whether he would attend the final, after a death in his family forced a last-minute cancellation of his appearance at the June 11 opener.
“We have no new information whether he will attend or not,” said Sello Hatang, spokesman of the Nelson Mandela Foundation. But Mandela’s spirit has loomed large over the four-week tournament, which has been repeatedly compared to the national euphoria that greeted his release from an apartheid prison 20 years ago. With 500 million viewers expected to watch the final on television, South Africa has delighted in proving wrong sceptics’ fears about the host country’s ability to pull it off. NEWPORT, Rhode Island – Fourth-seeded Belgian Olivier Rochus and fifth-seeded American Mardy Fish will face off Sunday in the final of the ATP grasscourt Hall of Fame Championships. Rochus advanced with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Argentina’s Brian Dabul, while Fish defeated Britain’s Richard Bloomfield 7-6 (7/5), 6-4. Fish booked his second finals berth of the season, after falling to compatriot Sam Querrey in the final at Queen’s Club last month. Rochus, who will be playing his eighth career final, said he was expecting a tough match. “He’s a great player. He went to the final at Queen’s,” Rochus said of Fish. “He’s a good player on grass. I’m here in the final. I have nothing to lose against Mardy. It’s going to be a very difficult match.” Bloomfield, ranked 552nd in the world, dropped his serve in the ninth game, the first service break of the match coming as he delivered faults on eight of his nine serves. “I’d like to think I put a little pressure to be able to do what he did in

Wearing their new uniforms for 13,000 delirious fans, then displaying them hours later for photographers — and even donning them for the contract-signing ceremony in owner Micky Arison’s office — James, Wade and Bosh got their welcoming celebration in Miami on Friday night, formally becoming teammates and probable favorites to win multiple NBA championships. Wade is Miami’s star and Bosh’s decision was the one that seemed to pull it all together, but in many respects, the night was all about James. Farewell, Cleveland. Hello, Miami. “I’ve made the right decision,” the two-time reigning MVP said. A packed arena of Miami Heat fans, plus another 10,000 or so outside the building, couldn’t have been more thrilled to hear James say those words. Liuzzi feels penalty was undeserved TONIO Liuzzi reckons his penalty for impeding Nico Hulkenberg in Silverstone qualifying was unjustified - as others have got away with blocking him earlier this season. The Italian regularly complained of traffic spoiling his qualifying laps in the early rounds, but he was the one accused of blocking yesterday, after an incident with Williams driver Hulkenberg.
The stewards opted to give Liuzzi a five-place grid penalty, dropping him from 15th to 20th. “It was at the end of Q2. I thought that he was coming out of the pits as I got a message from the team to stay in front because they thought that he was on an outlap so I wanted to stay ahead,” Liuzzi explained. “I don’t think that I should have been penalised because I lost three races in qualifying because of Will-
iams in the middle of the track this season. But we have to take it.” He is not optimistic about his race chances starting from so far back. “It’s not a circuit where you can easily overtake so points are going to be a big challenge, but we’ll try hard,” Liuzzi said. “There were some predictions for rain at the beginning of the weekend, which would maybe help, but we have to take it as it is.”

Bulgaria was the first asphalt round of this year’s WRC - but with three of the remaining six rounds on sealed surfaces, the result is ominous for Ford, which could only manage fifth and sixth as Dani Sordo, Petter Solberg and Sebastien Ogier filled second through fourth places in their works, Solberg and Junior Citroens respectively. No one looked capable of stopping Loeb from the moment the rally began. He blitzed his rivals on Friday’s stages, building a halfminute cushion that he could nurse through the rest of the event, driving conservatively this morning to ensure his fourth win of the season. “It’s been perfect - a very good first day, then the second day had difficult conditions, it was important to just keep the rhythm and not make any mistakes, not take any risks,” Loeb said. Sordo fended off Solberg for second after a tough rally-long battle. At half-distance the Spaniard seemed to have wrapped up the position, but a Saturday afternoon surge from Solberg meant they were just five seconds apart this morning. Solberg trimmed more time from his rival on today’s first stage, before Sordo responded with a run of stage wins that allowed him to claim second by 6.8s. Ogier was in the fight with Sordo until a misheard pace note saw him spent a minute off-course on Friday afternoon and fall from second to sev-
enth. He was soon back up to fourth, but with the top three out of reach by then, he too cruised to the finish. Ford had lost touch with Citroen even before an incorrect tyre choice saw Mikko Hirvonen and Jari-Matti Latvala struggling on inappropriate hard tyres on Saturday morning’s damp stages, costing them huge amounts of time. Latvala was slowed further by power steering issues and finished a minute adrift of his teammate in sixth. It looked initially like Ford might not even get in the top five, as Kimi Raikkonen delivered his best WRC performance yet to run fifth for Citroen Junior on Friday. But the Finn’s great run ended with a crash on the final leg one stage, although he returned under superally to finish 11th - a final-stage off meaning he could not catch 10th-placed Henning Solberg, who was delighted with his first taste of the new S2000 Ford. Solberg’s move to S2000 gave PG Andersson a chance at Stobart Ford, and he delivered a solid seventh on his return to WRC machinery, ahead of Hungarian driver Frigyes Turan, who had a good rally in an ageing Peugeot 307, and Andersson’s struggling Stobart team-mate Matthew Wilson. Thierry Neuville followed up his Ypres Rally podium with a dominant maiden Junior class win. He had battled with Mathieu Arzeno until the Frenchman was delayed by first a puncture, then a crash.
