LOS ANGELES - Taylor Swift got back together with Spotify on Friday, returning her music to streaming services almost three years after complaining publicly they did not pay artists enough, and on the same day rival Katy Perry released a new album.

Swift, one of the world’s bestselling pop stars, also made her music available on Pandora, Amazon.com and Tidal streaming services, her management team said. Her catalog had previously only been available on Apple Inc’s Music service.

The pop star’s management said the latest decision to return to all streaming services was taken to celebrate her album “1989” selling over 10 million copies worldwide. “ Ta y l o r w a n t s t o thank her fans by making her entire back catalog

available to all streaming services at midnight,” her management’s Instagram account called Taylor Nation said late on Thursday.

The move coincided with the release on Friday of “Witness,” a new album by Perry, Swift’s pop industry rival with whom she has a long-running personal feud. Swift, 27, has no new album to promote.

Swift pulled all her music off Spotify and other streaming services in November 2014 after writing an opinion piece in the Wall Street Journal saying that “piracy, file sharing and streaming have shrunk the numbers of paid album

sales drastically... Valuable things should be paid for. It’s my opinion that music should not be free.”

Six months later she struck a deal with Apple Music for her “1989” album after Apple bowed to pressure and agreed to pay artists during a free trial of its new streaming music service.

The announcement by Swift may ramp up rivalry with Perry, 32, who released her new album’s first single, “Swish Swish,” last month. She told talk show host Jimmy Fallon the song was “a great anthem for people to use whenever somebody’s trying to hold you down or bully you.” (rtr)

Plug in stick, minister of home affairs releases BAF parade

Saving water, inspired by Danghyang Nirartha’s story

DENPASAR - ‘Saving water’ becomes the main message delivered in the 39th Bali Arts Festival (BAF) parade in front of Bajra Sandhi Monument, Renon, Denpasar, on Saturday (Jun 10). Moreover, this year the BAF features the theme Ulundanu (preserving water as source of life). The release of the parade was marked by plugging in teteken (stick) inspired by the story of Danghyang Nirartha.

The stick was plugged in by Minister of Home Affairs, Tjahjo Kumolo, coming with the Minister of Tourism, Arief Yahya. A moment later, suddenly the water burst from a replica of a giant purple lotus brought by the dancers of the ISI Denpasar. The art envoy of ISI Denpasar then displayed Ketug Bumi and Siwanataraja dance.

It’s like the story of Danghyang Nirartha who came to Bali and brought a teakwood stick to Jati Temple.

Originally, the place was so dry, but afterward there was clear water coming out of a chunk when Danghyang Nirartha stuck his stick into the ground.

Governor of Bali, Made Mangku Pastika, said that the theme of BAF this year is very factual and becomes a daily problem. However, Pastika refused when Bali is currently said to be in danger of experiencing a water crisis. As long as water is well managed, the threat of water crisis is believed not to happen. “Now, the water is still much wasted to the sea like the water of Unda River. This surface water should be well managed. If well managed, people do not need to suck from the bottom (underground water—Ed),” he said.

According to Pastika, the display of the art parade has depicted various forms of community activities based on local wisdom values related to the theme of Ulundanu.

Certainly, it should be in the context of utilizing, preserving and glorifying water as a source of life as well as a source of civilization. “Saving water is taken because it becomes the most needed commodity by society. Water is life,” he explained.

Minister of Home Affairs, Tjahjo Kumolo, said that BAF should be able to become an inspiration for Balinese people and those of other regions in Indonesia.

Particularly, it is the matter of building tourism and cultural destinations as well as maintaining their respective cultural traditions. “Bali province may be advanced, the people of Bali may become more modern, but they should not leave their customary identity, culture and the belief existing in Bali,” he said.

Tjahjo added that in the future the BAF should be developed into a unifying event for the community and between the regions. Conversely, Tjahjo also briefly mentioned that the president was absent because of his busy agenda including the president’s apology to the whole of Balinese community. “He has busy schedule, so that he decided (to present at BAF—Ed) next year (2018—Ed),” he concluded.

Meanwhile, Minister of Tourism, Arief Yahya, said that BAF is currently becoming viral in social media.

It was evidenced by the two hashtags in social media namely #pestakesenianbali and #yuknontonpkb2017 having become the trending topic. “This BAF confirms Bali as a cultural-based main tourist destination. If competed to any other regions in Indonesia and overseas, it rarely matches this treasure of Bali,” he said.

Minister vivaciously watches omed-omedan attraction DENPASAR - Denpasar art envoy made a furor by displaying the omed-omedan tradition in the 39th Bali Arts Festival (BAF) parade in front of the Bajra Sandhi at Renon, Denpasar, on Saturday (Jun 10). Not a few officials on the stage of honor should be standing up to perpetuate the tradition of Kaja hamlet, Sesetan. Though did not stand up, two ministers of the Working Cabinet attending the event namely Minister of Home Affairs Tjahjo Kumolo and Minister of Tourism Arief Yahya also looked enthusiastic to witness the omed-omedan.

Head of the Bali Culture Agency, Dewa Putu Beratha, said that every district / municipality this year is newly required to display their typical traditions in the BAF parade. Some districts also presented their branding.

Denpasar City, for instance, presented Baris dance, Gianyar presented Kecak dance while Badung came with Frangipani dance.

“We oblige to present their distinctive art as the preservation of tradition. Actually, every year we are asked by central government to propose the registration of traditions existing in Bali,” he explained.

Aside from making furor due to the omed-omedan, Denpasar ornamental vehicle carrying gamelan players had trouble to move while passing in front of the stage of honor. It even almost hit the crowd of spectators for several times. Minister of Tourism, Arief Yahya, was even seen to also give a hand sign for the vehicle to back first so as to have space to move forward. After a few minutes, the vehicle was finally able to leave the stage of honor.

Another unique attraction occurred when the art envoy of Gianyar displayed an innovative artwork entitled Empelan Tain Kambing (literally, dam of goat dung). This artwork tells about farmers at Keliki village that cannot grow rice due to erratic water supply. Local headman named Ki Pasek then asked for help to King of Mengwi.

When building a dam with the help of the king, there were leaks here and there. One of the solutions used to patch up was goat dung so that the water could flow.

That is why the dam at the village was then named ‘the dam of goat dung.’

In the meantime, the art envoy of Buleleng also presented a youth parade with local distinctive traditional fashion as one of the attractions. It symbolizes the angels from heaven. Then, sekaa taruna (customary youth club) of Karangasem carried a big axis, a typical form of ritual paraphernalia of Yeh Poh village, Manggis, a second to none in Bali. Some other districts also showcased innovative concepts of marine heritage such as Jembrana with Segara Rupek, Tabanan with Soka Beach and Badung with surfing dance on Kuta Beach.

Meanwhile, Bangli displayed the existence of the Tirta Solas holy springs and Klungkung made ornamental car depicting Goa Lawah Temple as a place of spiritual activity of Nyegara Gunung.

As in previous years, the audience of BAF this year also exploded. However, it is unknown whether due to the absence of the president or not, supervision in front of the stage of honor was not too strict. A few spectators and photographers thronged the area, even to block the parade participants to pass. (kmb32)

Sweden’s Museum of Failure celebrates products that flopped

HELSINGBORG — Green Heinz ketchup? Fatfree Pringles? Colgate frozen lasagna? You don’t need to be an expert to know these products weren’t successful.

Which is why these creations, with dozens of others, feature in the new Museum of Failure , a wacky parade of rejected products from years gone by set up in the Swedish town of Helsingborg.

It’s the brainchild of 43-year-old curator and clinical psychologist Samuel West. The idea came to him while on holiday and he quickly purchased the internet domain name.

West later realized he’d accidentally misspelled “museum” — a sure sign the project would succeed.

“We know that 80 to 90 percent of innovation projects, they fail and you never read about them, you don’t see them, people don’t talk about them,” West says. “And if there’s anything we can do from these failures, is learn from them.”

Many items in the museum show companies’ attempts

to diversify their brand. There’s Coca-Cola’s BlaK coffee beverage and Pepsi’s Crystal clear soda.

Iconic motorcycle manufacturer Harley-Davidson makes an appearance with a men’s eau-du-toilette, launched in the mid-1990s.

“The fans hated it,” West says. “They had Christmas ornaments, Barbie dolls, all kinds of other stuff with the Harley-Davidson logo and it sort of trivializes the brand.”

Even one of the world’s best-known businessmen, President Donald Trump, makes an appearance.

The “I’m Back And You’re Fired” board game from 2004 looks like Monopoly, but players use “T’’ branded pieces and the paper notes are adorned with Trump’s image.

“It’s a boring version of Monopoly. It’s simplified so stupid people can play it, but it’s also horribly boring,” West says.

The Museum of Failure is also home to some high-tech devices, including Google’s Glass headset with augmented reality display and in-built camera.

“The problem was Google released it too early, it was still a prototype, so it was full of bugs,” West says.

Segway’s two-wheeled electric mobility device is also featured.

“The Segway was supposed to revolutionize the way we transport people,” West says. “And we all know that the Segway today is used by tourists before they go get drunk.”

Experts say innovation is tough and failure is often part of the process.

“You’re working on the edge of tomorrow,” says Nicolai de Gier, a professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. “It’s like the other part of trying is failing, so it’s just a very natural thing and very important thing.”

West says many brands featured in his museum want nothing to do with it. But he says other companies have booked large group visits, perhaps to learn from past mistakes.

“It’s liberating for us, when we try out a new skill or learn something, it’s OK to fail,” he says.

The museum does offer some hope. On display is an Apple Newton personal digital assistant from 1993. The bulky black device paved the way for the iPhones and iPads that millions use today.

The Museum of Failure opens June 7 and will stay in its gallery space until at least early September. Entry is 100 Swedish kroner, or approximately $11. (ap)

Buleleng introduces Janger as heritage of Dutch colonial

DUTCH colonial did not only pass down buildings. In fact, janger art also became an entertainment during colonial period in Buleleng.

Janger art from Menyali village, Sawan, is an art heritage emerging during the colonial period. To preserve and evoke the nostalgia during the heyday of Janger dance of Menyali village, the Janger Saraswati art troupe presented the result of its dance reconstruction in the arena of the 39th Bali Arts Festival (BAF) 2017.

One of them is Mumbul bathing pool located at Munduk hamlet, Anturan, Buleleng district. Water in this large pool is very fresh and quite suitable for those that would like to have relaxation.

Chief of Anturan customary village, Ketut Mangku, said the pool has existed from time immemorial. At its surrounding, there are 11 springs located separately on the area of 800 square meters, starting from the innermost courtyard of Ayu Taman Temple, middle courtyard of the temple to springs of the swimming pool.

“The arrangement of the bathing place was started last March,” he said, not long ago.

This also offers a place of malukat or purificatory rite. Before trying, all the pilgrims are required to perform a special ritual because it is in a sanctified area, namely in the middle courtyard of the Ayu Taman Temple.

The coolest water sensation is under the banyan tree located in the innermost courtyard of Ayu Taman Temple, but this place cannot be entered carelessly. It is intended for holy activities such as invoking holy water for ngaben (cremation) ceremony or temple festival activities. “Before doing purificatory rite, at the outermost courtyard of the Ayu Taman Temple, the pilgrims must say prayers first,” said Mangku.

Mangku added that having purificatory rite at this spring is believed to be able to cure various diseases such as skin disease, allergies as well as others. “Soaking for 15 minutes will give sensation of having soaked our body in ice water,” he added. (sos)

Before making a performance in the BAF arena at Denpasar Art Center, not long ago this janger art troupe appeared on stage in the BAF for Buleleng district recently.

Appearance of the Janger from Menyali drew the attention of the audience. It happens because the dancers are elderly. Previously, the janger was danced around the 1960s and 1970s. At that time, male dancers were better known as the appearance of jipak (male janger dancers of Menyali—Ed).

Headman of Menyali, Made Jaya Harta, said that

jipak in the janger dance of his village used to be wearing dapper costumes. The costumes were inspired by the Dutch Army landed in Buleleng customs (now, former harbor of Buleleng—Ed). Over the course of time, costume and style of the janger slowly disappeared due to the influence of other arts, including contemporary janger. “The song and dance movements are similar. However, when compared to contemporary janger, the costumes are quite striking. This dance was once staged to Lombok. The heyday has disappeared so the art heritage of our village is threatened by extinction,” he said.

According to Harta, his village government has done reconstruction to Janger Menyali since February 2017. The reconstruction is made because the janger dance is believed to be a sacred art and even categorized into sacred dance. To that end, he is committed to preserving the Janger Menyali dance. “We have to preserve the ancestral heritage having existed since the Dutch era. This reconstruction began by teaming up with the old dancers, and then we will regenerate the dancers, so that this dance is sustainable as the pride of Buleleng,” he explained. (mud)

Aside from remaining to include “Bali” though actually “Bali” alone has become a brand that can already be known to the world. This Bali branding will be launched along with the branding of the nine other

destinations in Indonesia. They are Friendly Lombok, Majestic Banyuwangi, Explore Makassar, Enjoy Jakarta and Wonderful Indonesia with the improvement on the logo image. “Besides, there is also branding launch of the ten-New Bali. It will be entirely launched in Jakarta on June 14,” he explained.

After the launch, Yuniartha admitted there will immediate dissemination on the branding of Bali, the Island of Gods. This branding is expected to be better known by many people than the previous Shanti, Shanti, Shanti branding.

also be featured in social media to be spread around the world.

“Later on, all the districts or municipality are also expected to create a synergetic branding with the Bali, the Island of Gods. For instance, Klungkung has already made Klungkung, Blue Paradise, while Karangasem has Karangasem: the Spirit of Bali,” he said.

Both issues currently get serious concern from the Badung research and development agency.

Head of the Badung Research and Development Agency, Wayan Suambara, recently said that to

meet the needs for clean water mainly in South Kuta region, the seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) is one of the solutions.

“The SWRO has actually been discussed by the directors of the municipality waterworks (PDAM) with me when I was still the Head of the regional development planning board (Bappeda). At that time, I thought it needed studying comprehensively, but until now

there has been no proposal coming to my agency to be studied,” he said.

However, he admitted that the study of SWRO cannot be directly and immediately done because it concerns with internal management of the PDAM Tirta Mangutama.

If asked to review, he claimed to be ready to do so. “We believe the SWRO can be applied as an effort of the PDAM to supply water for

residents in South Badung. It will make the supply of PDAM better,” he said.

Related to the TPST, he admitted that Badung absolutely needed because all this time Badung district does not have its own landfill. Meanwhile, condition of garbage increasingly piles up and the landfill becomes one of the valuation criteria for Adipura Award. However, the handling of

waste, according to him, becomes very important because it relates to the capacity of Badung as a tourist destination and the impact of waste to public health. Building the TPST is a solution. The governance, pattern of formation and the capacity of waste management needs to be studied. “Though having no landfill, Badung can become clean with the TPST,” he explained. (kmb23)

Foreign leaders expressed growing concern over the dispute, which pits Qatar against Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bahrain and Egypt. With backing from U.S. President Donald Trump, they accuse Qatar of supporting their regional arch-rival Iran as well as Islamist militants.

Kuwait has led a regional effort to mediate, but the four states intensified the pressure on Friday by placing dozens of people with alleged links to Qatar on terrorism blacklists.

A senior UAE official followed on Saturday by calling Qatar “duplicitous”, alleging in a series of tweets that its funding of militants had sown chaos and violence throughout the region.

“Qatar has been riding (the) tiger of extremism & terrorism. Cost to region & world too high,” tweeted Anwar Gargash, the UAE minister of state for foreign affairs.

“Diplomacy only way forward.

Process can only work following clear indication that Qatar will stop support & finance of extremism & terrorism.”

“CLEAR AND TRANSPARENT” Qatar’s foreign minister fired back that there was “no clarity” in such accusations, speaking in an interview with RT Arabic in Moscow after emerging from talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

“Qatar is accused of having a hidden relationship with Iran, but its relations with Iran are clear, transparent and time-tested,” said Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani, noting that the UAE does more trade with Iran than Qatar does.

He denied that Qatar supported Egypt’s outlawed Islamist movement, the Muslim Brotherhood, and Hamas, the Palestinian Islamist group that controls the Gaza Strip.

He dismissed as “fantasy” a Saudi media report that he had met in Baghdad with the head of Iran’s Quds Force, controlled by Iran’s powerful Revolutionary Guards.

He said Qatar remained committed to a Kuwaiti-led mediation effort, but that he had yet to receive a clear list of demands.

As conciliation efforts in the Gulf appeared to stall, leaders in Russia, Turkey, Germany and the United States expressed increasing concern.

After German Chancellor Angela Merkel called the situation “very unsettling” on Friday, her foreign minister, Sigmar Gabriel, cautioned on Saturday that it could lead to war.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told Sheikh al-Thani of Moscow’s concern and called for talks.

And Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan - who has pledged food and troops to Qatar in the face of a blockade from its neighbours hosted Bahrain’s foreign minister and urged that the dispute be resolved by the end of the holy month of Ramadan. (rtr)

MARAWI CITY - U.S. special forces have joined the battle to crush Islamist militants holed up in a southern Philippines town, officials said on Saturday, as government forces struggled to make headway and 13 marines were killed in intense urban fighting.

The Philippines military said the United States was providing technical assistance to end the siege of Marawi City by fighters allied to Islamic State, which is now in its third week, but it had no boots on the ground.

“They are not fighting. They are just providing technical support,” military spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Jo-Ar Herrera told a news conference in Marawi City.

The Pentagon, which has no permanent presence in the Philippines but for years has kept 50 to 100 special forces troops in the south of the country on rotational exercises, confirmed it was helping the Philippine military in Marawi.

It said in a statement it was providing Philippine forces with security assistance and training in the areas of intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance. It said it had an additional 300 to 500 troops in the country to support regular training and activities, without giving further details.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, a U.S. official said support included aerial surveillance and targeting, electronic eavesdropping, communications assistance and training. A U.S. P-3 Orion surveillance plane was seen flying over the town on Friday, according

to media reports.

“There is no direct U.S. participation in combat, which is prohibited by Philippine law, although our forces involved in training the Philippine military are authorized to defend themselves,” the U.S. official said.

The cooperation between the longtime allies is significant because Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, who came to power a year ago, has taken a hostile stance towards Washington and has vowed to eject U.S. military trainers and advisers from his country.

The seizure of Marawi City on May 23 has alarmed Southeast Asian nations which fear that Islamic State - facing setbacks in Syria and Iraq - is establishing a stronghold on the Philippine island of Mindanao that could threaten the whole region.

About 40 foreigners have fought alongside the Philippine militants in Marawi City, most of them from Indonesia and Malaysia, though some came from the Middle East.

The Philippines military suffered its biggest one-day loss on Friday since 10 troops were killed in a friendly-fire incident on June 1. Herrera said 13 marines conducting clearing operations died after an “intense” houseto-house firefight during which they encountered improvised explosive devices and were attacked by rocketpropelled grenades.

The deaths took to 58 the number of security forces killed, with 20 civilians and more than a hundred rebel fighters also killed in the Marawi fighting. (rtr)

Even before new political chaos, British economy was limping

LONDON - Britain’s economy appeared to be struggling to pick up pace even before Friday’s inconclusive election result, with industrial output rising less than expected in April after a poor start to 2017. The combination of a lack of economic momentum and the heightened uncertainty about how Prime Minister Theresa May can advance her plans for Brexit might prompt her new government to relax its grip on spending, some analysts said.

Industrial output rose 0.2 percent on the month in April after falling for three months. It was much weaker than a forecast 0.8 percent, and over a three-month period it contracted for the first time since November,

the Office for National Statistics said on Friday. Manufacturing, which is part of overall industrial output, also saw output rise 0.2 percent in April, compared with a forecast of 0.9 percent in the Reuters poll.

The construction sector was much weaker than expected too.

After last year’s shock decision by voters to pull Britain out of the European Union, Britain is now facing more political upheaval after May’s unexpected failure to win a parliamentary majority. “There is clearly a risk that today’s election result causes growth to weaken towards the end of the second quarter,” Ruth Gregory, an economist with Capital Economics, said. “That said, this is unlikely to spell disaster since the economy has proved pretty resilient to political uncertainty in the recent past.”

Britain’s economy slowed sharply in the first three months of 2017, making it the worst performer among the Group of Seven nations after outpacing its peers in 2016, despite the shock of the Brexit vote. As well as rising inflation and slow wage growth weighing on consumers, the economy now has to contend with heightened political uncertainty about Britain’s ability to proceed with its plan to leave the European Union.

months to May, the National Institute of Economic and Social Research, a think tank, said on Friday. “The subdued performance in the economy throws the political turmoil of a hung parliament into sharp relief,” NIESR director Jagjit Chadha said. “People are looking for answers to low levels of economic growth, limited improvements in productivity and falling real wages.”

BOE BACK IN ACTION? Investors are watching closely to see if May responds to the increase in support for the opposition Labour Party by relaxing her grip on public spending, something which would boost the economy. Chris Iggo, fixed income chief investment officer at AXA Investment Managers, said that if the government failed to boost the economy, the Bank of England might resort to reviving its massive bond-buying programme again.

The BoE said before the election that it expected some of the impact of slower consumer spending would be eased by stronger exports driven by the pound’s fall since the Brexit vote last year. ONS data

showed on Friday that Britain’s goods trade deficit narrowed by more than expected to 10.4 billion pounds ($13.2 billion) in April.

But the smaller deficit was due to a sharp fall in goods imports with volumes in monthly terms down more than 5 percent in April, almost reversing a surge in March. Exports edged down.

Over the three months to April, goods exports rose 2.1 percent while imports were flat. But the ONS said there was no sign yet that exporters were taking advantage of sterling’s weakness to cut their foreign-currency prices and strengthen their competitive advantage. “Britain won’t enjoy a trade boost until exporters reduce margins and seek greater market share instead,” Samuel Tombs, an economist with Pantheon Macroeconomics, said.

The ONS said construction output in April fell by 1.6 percent from March and was down 0.6 percent on the year. The Reuters poll had pointed to growth of 0.3 percent on the month but a fall of 0.4 percent compared with April last year.(rtr)

Dian Oerip, Reconstructing Indonesian Woven Cloth Fashion forward earth-friendly garments for changing times There are a staggering array of types, functions and styles of woven cloth throughout the archipelago of Indonesia. Every island and countless villages have their own particular methods, motifs and often colours that characterize their particular weavings. Traditionally these defining characteristics were furthered inform by the purpose for which the weavings were made. Certain motifs have significance related to a women’s marriage ceremony or for protection when setting off on a long journey and many other important life events. Certain motifs are used to distinguish someone’s status within their own community or to differentiate them from members of other communities.

As industrially made clothes became more widely available, many of these symbolic and semiotic meanings have been lost or not longer have the same power that they once did - though it should be added that this is more or less true in different parts of this great archipelago. The diminished meaning attributed to woven cloth along with other socio-economic changes have meant that less and less people are weaving these stunning wearable art works.

Dian Oerip is doing her small part to encourage the next generation to keep this rich heritage alive.

Born in Madiun, East Java Dian later moved to Jakarta for work.

She enjoyed travelling to different

remote regions of Indonesia and slowly accumulated a collection of such weavings.

She first started cutting and sewing them together into clothes of her liking as a pastime but so many people appreciated her clothes that in 2009, she made a business out of creating garments that bring together woven cloth from 2 to 3 different parts of Indonesia into a single garment.

Sometimes these clothes are made of two different styles of weaving with small accents of a third style, other times full patchworks emerge. The guiding principles in her creation is to use every last piece of a weaving that she has cut up and creating struc-

tured loose fitting garments that respect the original purpose of the weavings used. After selling these eco-freindly, socially equitable, culturally valuable, reconstructed wearable art works to friends and relatives, an american shop in Florida took interest and started selling her clothes. A short time later another shop in Rotterdam also started selling her works and holds regular fashion shows in which the models perform dances inspired by Indonesia’s equally rich performing arts heritage.

On Satuday May 27th, Dian Oerip’s clothes where photographed on models in Bali, posing in the trendy Limestone Cafe in Denpasar by a group of photographers from

Lingkara Photography Community.

The photo shoot highlighted the traditional art aspect of these garments and simultaneously the very contemporary usage and setting as if to demonstrate that traditional Indonesian woven art is alive and well and is also changing dynamically with the times.

Lingakara Store, that will be opening in a few weeks time, came

to life out of a desire to showcase up-cycled products designed by local artists with the aim of inspiring people towards conscious choices in their consumption of fashion as one of the most polluting industries on the planet. Britain’s May seeks deal with Northern Irish party to cling to power

LONDON - British Prime Minister Theresa May was seeking a deal with a small Northern Irish party on Sunday to stay in power after losing her party’s parliamentary majority in a catastrophic electoral gamble just days before Brexit talks are set to start.

But with May’s personal authority in tatters, there were reports that moves were under way within her Conservative Party to dislodge her, while opposition Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn was insisting she could be ousted and he could replace her.

“Theresa May is a dead woman walking. It’s just how long she’s going to remain on death row,” former Conservative finance minister George Osborne, who was sacked by May when she became prime minister last year, told the BBC. With Britain due to start negotiating the terms of its exit from the European Union with the bloc’s 27 other members on June 19, the political crisis in London could not have come at a worse time.

Gaddafi son Saif freed in Libya, whereabouts unclear -lawyer

BENGHAZI - Saif al-Islam Gaddafi has been freed by an armed group in western Libya where he was being held following the 2011 revolt against his late father, former leader Muammar Gaddafi, one of his lawyers and the brigade involved said.

He was released in the town of Zintan under an amnesty law passed by a parliament based in eastern Libya, lawyer Khaled al-Zaidi said on Sunday, adding that Saif was headed to another city which could not be named for security reasons.

Saif, 44, is the most prominent of the late leader’s children, and was touted by some as a possible successor before the uprising six years ago in which Gaddafi was toppled and killed.

It is unclear what role the younger Gaddafi could play in Libya, where a complex array of armed groups and competing governments are vying for control.

But some in eastern Libya, where military commander Khalifa Haftar has been building power, have been pressing for Saif’s release amid a push from former regime figures to reassert influence. Earlier reports that Saif had been freed from Zintan turned out to be false and there have been conflicting reports about his status.

Zintan’s Abubaker Sadiq brigade, which was responsible for guarding Saif, said it had decided to release him following requests from the ministry of justice of a government based in

eastern Libya.

“We decided to release Saif alIslam Muammar Gaddafi, who is free, and we confirm that he left Zintan on the date of his release on the 14th of Ramadan (Friday),” the brigade said.

A Tripoli court sentenced Saif to death in 2015 for war crimes, including killing protesters during the revolution.

Libya slid into turmoil after his father’s overthrow, with rival governments and armed alliances competing for power. A U.N.-backed government now in Tripoli has struggled to impose its authority and has been rejected by powerful factions in the east.

Zintan, which grew powerful through its role in the 2011 uprising and has been at odds with authorities in Tripoli, had refused to hand Saif over. He is also sought by the International Criminal Court, which says his trial in Libya did not meet international standards.

It was unknown what terms Saif’s captors might have set for his release, and why they would have freed a prisoner seen as a major bargaining chip.

Zintan, about 145 km (90 miles) southwest of Tripoli, has its own divisions, but it has been broadly aligned with the government and armed forces based in eastern Libya.

Indonesia, Philippines make arrests linked to city siege

JAKARTA — Indonesian and Philippine authorities have arrested several people suspected of links to Islamic militants who overran a city in the southern Philippines and two others who allegedly helped inspire a double suicide bombing in Jakarta, officials said Thursday. Indonesian national police spokesman Martinus Sitompul said a man arrested Tuesday in the city of Yogyakarta in Central Java is suspected of helping Indonesians travel to Mindanao, where they joined Islamic State group-affiliated militants who still occupy parts of Marawi more than two weeks after their initial attack.

Police only gave the man’s initials and said four of those he helped are among seven Indone-

sians currently sought by Philippine authorities. In the Philippines, officials said Cayamora Maute, the

father of several of the militants behind the Marawi siege, was arrested Tuesday along with four other people at a checkpoint in southern Davao city. Maute was flown Thursday to a maximum-security detention center in metropolitan Manila, the military said.

Former Marawi Mayor Fajad Umpar Salic was also arrested in southern Misamis Oriental province late Wednesday. Maute and Salic denied any role in the Marawi siege, military officials said. More than 200 people — mostly militants involved in the Marawi siege, along with politicians and civilians who back the gunmen — have been ordered arrested, Philippine military chief of staff Gen. Eduardo Ano said.

The audacious attack on Marawi, and the participation of foreign fighters, has been a wakeup call for Southeast Asian governments about the potential of the southern Philippine region to become a magnet for Islamic State group sympathizers as it loses territory it controlled in Syria and Iraq. The Philippine military says those killed since the fighting broke out on May 23 include 20 civilians, 138 militants and 39 government troops. More than 1,560 civilians have been

rescued.

West Java police spokesman Yusri Yunus said two other men were captured Wednesday in the city of Bandung on suspicion of involvement in the May 24 suicide bombings that killed three policemen and the two suicide bombers.

Police said the men, Wachidun Triyono and Muslih Afifi, and another militant arrested earlier, Muhammad Iqbal, held a meeting with the two suicide bombers on May 19 in the West Java town of

Cileunyi during which they steeled their resolve to carry out the bombings. Police also say Iqbal, who was freed from prison in 2015 after serving a sentence for involvement in a bomb-making laboratory discovered in 2010, was the bomb maker.

All those connected to the suicide bombing were members of Jemaah Anshorut Daulah, a network of Indonesian extremist groups that pledges allegiance to Islamic State group leader Abu Bakr alBaghdadi, according to police. (ap)

‘Greatest’ Bolt to leave unmatched legacy - Coe

KINGSTON - Usain Bolt is without question the greatest ever track athlete and the Jamaican’s involvement in athletics after his retirement will be paramount to ensure its relevance to a younger generation, according to Sebastian Coe. The IAAF president watched Bolt cruise to victory in the 100 metres at the national stadium in Kingston on Saturday, the 30-yearold bidding farewell to more than 30,000 spectators at his last meeting on home soil.

Coe, who won back-to-back 1,500 metres golds among four Olympic medals, said no other sprinter could compare to the eighttimes Olympic champion, who will bow out at the world championships in London.

“When you’re sitting in the pub and you’re having the discussion: who is the greatest footballer? Nobody will agree on that,” Coe told Reuters in an interview.

“If you have the same discussion

around golf or tennis, everybody will have different views.

“It’s a slam dunk. (Bolt) is the greatest sprinter the world has ever seen.

“If you look at the records he set, if you look at the Olympic championships he’s had -- three in a row -- I’m not sure I’m ever going to see that in my lifetime.

“So it’s a massive legacy and the most important legacy is that he has connected our sport to people who weren’t traditional track and field fans, that’s the measure of the man.”

Coe said the 100 and 200 metres world record holder would have a bigger challenge in life after competition.

“The second leg of his journey, the biggest challenge athletics has, the biggest challenge the Olympic movement has, is for young people to feel what we offer is relevant to their lives,” the 60-year-old Briton said.

“He connects with all ages, he connects with all denominations, all cultures, all creeds, all politics and that’s a very unique breed and we need to maintain his involvement,” the IOC vice president said.

“I’m delighted that he has agreed to help us grow the sport and to help our sport remain relevant to young people.”

Coe was thrilled to see Bolt make his last run on home soil.

“There’s nowhere else on this planet that I would rather be tonight, than here, this was the must see moment and I’m not just saying that as the president of the world sport, I’m saying this as a fan,” he added. (rtr)

LONDON - Former world number one Maria Sharapova will miss the grasscourt season, including this month’s Wimbledon qualifying tournament, after failing to recover from a left-thigh injury she suffered during last month’s Italian Open.

“After an additional scan, the muscle tear that I sustained in Rome will unfortunately not allow me to compete in the grass court tournaments I was scheduled to play,” Sharapova, who is on a comeback trail after serving a 15-month doping ban, said on her official Facebook page.

Sharapova opted not to apply for a wildcard into the main Wimbledon draw after her request for an invite into Roland Garros, where she is a twice former champion, was snubbed by French Open officials.

The Russian’s low ranking meant she was only guaranteed a place in the Wimbledon qualifying event if she wanted to secure a place in the July 3-16 grasscourt major.

However, the 2004 Wimbledon champion was granted a wildcard for the grasscourt warm-up tournament in Birmingham, England, which she will also miss.

“I want to thank the LTA for their amazing support on my return and providing me with a Birmingham wildcard, a tournament which I hope many of you will be able to attend,” added the 178th-ranked Sharapova.

“I look forward to meeting you there next year. I will continue to work on my recovery and my next scheduled tournament is in Stanford.”

The Stanford tournament begins at the end of July.

The five-times grand slam winner, who received wildcards to play in Stuttgart, Madrid and Rome after being left without a ranking when her doping ban ended, retired injured in her second round match at the Italian Open.

She was wearing a bandage on her thigh at the time.

Missing the whole grasscourt season means the 30-year-old Russian will not be ranked high enough for direct entry into the U.S. Open, where officials will have to decide whether to court controversy by offering a wildcard. (rtr)

Sp rt Kane rescues England as hat tricks light up Euro qualifiers

While Harry Kane didn’t contribute to the glut of hat tricks in European qualifying for the World Cup, the England striker grabbed a crucial equalizer in a chaotic finale against Scotland on Saturday. A dramatic final six minutes in Group F at Hampden Park saw Scotland come from 1-0 down to take the lead through two Leigh Griffiths free kicks. Kane, captain of England for the first time, volleyed home deep into stoppage time to make it 2-2. Things were simpler for Germany and Poland, who were aided by hat tricks as the pair continued to dominate their groups.

Despite fielding a weakened team against minnow San Marino, Germany stayed perfect in Group C with a 7-0 win.

Sandro Wagner scored a hat trick on just his second appearance for Joachim Loew’s side. Poland stayed unbeaten as Robert Lewandowski’s hat trick took him level with Cristiano Ronaldo at the top of the scoring charts. Lewandowski scored two penalties during a 3-1 win over Romania.

But that wasn’t Group E’s only treble. Stevan Jovetic scored Montenegro’s first ever hat trick in a 4-1 victory over Armenia. Kane, who has led the Premier League’s scoring charts for the last two seasons, had mixed emotions at fulltime. “It (the goal) is definitely up at the top, it was a special day,” he said. “It looked like we were going to win the game and then like we were going to lose when 2-1 down in stoppage time. To get the goal was special. I did not know whether the keeper was going to come, so when I saw him stay on his line ... what a ball it was, and it was just a good side-foot into the net.”

GROUP C

It was only ever a question of how many goals Germany would score against San Marino at Grundig Stadium in Nuremberg. Fans needed a bit of patience before the sixth arrived courtesy of Julian Brandt, whose first international goal came in the 72nd, and Wagner completed the rout with five minutes remaining. Norway and the Czech Republic played out a 1-1 draw in Oslo as Theodor Gebre Selassie scored from close range 10 minutes before the break, but Norway’s Alexander Soderlund equalized from the penalty spot.

Northern Ireland took advantage of the result as Stuart Dallas scored an injury-time goal to consolidate second place in the group, five points behind Germany, but four clear of the third-placed Czech Republic.

GROUP E

Poland stayed six points clear as Lewandowski got on the scoresheet for an 11th consecutive qualifying match. He emphatically headed home in the 57th before sealing his hat trick with another penalty five minutes later. Romania scored the goal of the night in the 77th through Bogdan Stancu’s stunning strike but its qualifying hopes look bleak after losing ground to second and third-placed Montenegro and Denmark.

England’s position at the top of Group F was weakened as Slovakia and Slovenia both won, but it left Hampden Park relieved to have kept its eight-year unbeaten run in tournament qualifying matches intact. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain came off the bench to give England the lead before Griffiths’s free kicks looked to have snatched victory for Scotland.

But Kane popped up deep into stoppage time to preserve a two point cushion for England in the standings. Its nearest challenger is Slovakia, which secured a crucial 2-1 victory in Lithuania.

Marek Hamsik set up Vladimir Weiss for the opener and added a stunning free kick of his own after the break. Slovenia is just one point further back in third place after a comfortable 2-0 win against Malta. Mexico upset the U.S. 2-1 at Columbus, Ohio, on the opening day of the final round of qualifying in November and is in position to sweep the Americans in a qualifying cycle for the first time 1972. SAO PAULO - Former Brazil defender Roberto Carlos hit out at allegations he took illegal stimulants as “lies” on Saturday and vowed judicial action against the German TV network that made them.

A documentary aired by the ARD network said the legendary full back was named in a dossier given by Brazil’s anti-doping agency to the public prosecutor’s office in Sao Paulo in 2015.

Reuters was unable to independently verify the allegations in the documentary.

The former Real Madrid player called the allegations “extremely vague” and said his lawyers were taking action to refute them.

“I vehemently repudiate the irresponsible accusations made by the German network ARD and reaffirm that I never used any ar-

tifice that gave me an advantage over my colleagues,” he said in a statement sent to Reuters.

“All my career I have fought for fairness and above all loyalty,” the former Palmeiras, Corinthians and Fenerbahce left-back said.

“The lying accusations against me are completely against the way I think. In a career spanning more than 20 years I never tested positive for any substance that would modify my performance.”

The Brazilian Football Confederation did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the issue.

The defender, who is currently a director at Real Madrid, won La Liga four times and the Champions League on three occasions with the Spanish club, as well as lifting titles in Brazil and Turkey. (rtr)

A documentary aired by the ARD network said the legendary full back was named in a dossier given by Brazil’s anti-doping agency to the public prosecutor’s office in Sao Paulo in 2015.

Reuters was unable to independently verify the allegations in the documentary.

The former Real Madrid player called the allegations “extremely vague” and said his lawyers were taking action to refute them.

“I vehemently repudiate the irresponsible accusations made by the German network ARD and reaffirm that I never used any ar-

tifice that gave me an advantage over my colleagues,” he said in a statement sent to Reuters.

‘Greatest’ Bolt to leave unmatched legacy - Coe

KINGSTON - Usain Bolt is without question the greatest ever track athlete and the Jamaican’s involvement in athletics after his retirement will be paramount to ensure its relevance to a younger generation, according to Sebastian Coe. The IAAF president watched Bolt cruise to victory in the 100 metres at the national stadium in Kingston on Saturday, the 30-yearold bidding farewell to more than 30,000 spectators at his last meeting on home soil.

Coe, who won back-to-back 1,500 metres golds among four Olympic medals, said no other sprinter could compare to the eighttimes Olympic champion, who will bow out at the world championships in London.

“When you’re sitting in the pub and you’re having the discussion: who is the greatest footballer? Nobody will agree on that,” Coe told Reuters in an interview.

“If you have the same discussion

around golf or tennis, everybody will have different views.

“It’s a slam dunk. (Bolt) is the greatest sprinter the world has ever seen.

“If you look at the records he set, if you look at the Olympic championships he’s had -- three in a row -- I’m not sure I’m ever going to see that in my lifetime.

“So it’s a massive legacy and the most important legacy is that he has connected our sport to people who weren’t traditional track and field fans, that’s the measure of the man.”

Coe said the 100 and 200 metres world record holder would have a bigger challenge in life after competition.

“The second leg of his journey, the biggest challenge athletics has, the biggest challenge the Olympic movement has, is for young people to feel what we offer is relevant to their lives,” the 60-year-old Briton said.

“He connects with all ages, he connects with all denominations, all cultures, all creeds, all politics and that’s a very unique breed and we need to maintain his involvement,” the IOC vice president said.

“I’m delighted that he has agreed to help us grow the sport and to help our sport remain relevant to young people.”

Coe was thrilled to see Bolt make his last run on home soil.

LONDON - Former world number one Maria Sharapova will miss the grasscourt season, including this month’s Wimbledon qualifying tournament, after failing to recover from a left-thigh injury she suffered during last month’s Italian Open.

“After an additional scan, the muscle tear that I sustained in Rome will unfortunately not allow me to compete in the grass court tournaments I was scheduled to play,” Sharapova, who is on a comeback trail after serving a 15-month doping ban, said on her official Facebook page.

Sharapova opted not to apply for a wildcard into the main Wimbledon draw after her request for an invite into Roland Garros, where she is a twice former champion, was snubbed by French Open officials.

The Russian’s low ranking meant she was only guaranteed a place in the Wimbledon qualifying event if she wanted to secure a place in the July 3-16 grasscourt major.

However, the 2004 Wimbledon champion was granted a wildcard for the grasscourt warm-up tournament in Birmingham, England, which she will also miss.

“I want to thank the LTA for their amazing support on my return and providing me with a Birmingham wildcard, a tournament which I hope many of you will be able to attend,” added the 178th-ranked Sharapova.

“I look forward to meeting you there next year. I will continue to work on my recovery and my next scheduled tournament is in Stanford.”

The Stanford tournament begins at the end of July.

The five-times grand slam winner, who received wildcards to play in Stuttgart, Madrid and Rome after being left without a ranking when her doping ban ended, retired injured in her second round match at the Italian Open.

Britain’s May seeks deal with Northern Irish party to cling to power

LONDON - British Prime Minister Theresa May was seeking a deal with a small Northern Irish party on Sunday to stay in power after losing her party’s parliamentary majority in a catastrophic electoral gamble just days before Brexit talks are set to start.

But with May’s personal authority in tatters, there were reports that moves were under way within her Conservative Party to dislodge her, while opposition Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn was insisting she could be ousted and he could replace her.

Gaddafi son Saif freed in Libya, whereabouts unclear -lawyer

BENGHAZI - Saif al-Islam Gaddafi has been freed by an armed group in western Libya where he was being held following the 2011 revolt against his late father, former leader Muammar Gaddafi, one of his lawyers and the brigade involved said.

He was released in the town of Zintan under an amnesty law passed by a parliament based in eastern Libya, lawyer Khaled al-Zaidi said on Sunday, adding that Saif was headed to another city which could not be named for security reasons.

Saif, 44, is the most prominent of the late leader’s children, and was touted by some as a possible successor before the uprising six years ago in which Gaddafi was toppled and killed.

It is unclear what role the younger Gaddafi could play in Libya, where a complex array of armed groups and competing governments are vying for control.

But some in eastern Libya, where military commander Khalifa Haftar has been building power, have been pressing for Saif’s release amid a push from former regime figures to reassert influence. Earlier reports that Saif had been freed from Zintan turned out to be false and there have been conflicting reports about his status.

Zintan’s Abubaker Sadiq brigade, which was responsible for guarding Saif, said it had decided to release him following requests from the ministry of justice of a government based in

eastern Libya.

“We decided to release Saif alIslam Muammar Gaddafi, who is free, and we confirm that he left Zintan on the date of his release on the 14th of Ramadan (Friday),” the brigade said.

A Tripoli court sentenced Saif to death in 2015 for war crimes, including killing protesters during the revolution.

Libya slid into turmoil after his father’s overthrow, with rival governments and armed alliances competing for power. A U.N.-backed government now in Tripoli has struggled to impose its authority and has been rejected by powerful factions in the east.

Zintan, which grew powerful through its role in the 2011 uprising and has been at odds with authorities in Tripoli, had refused to hand Saif over. He is also sought by the International Criminal Court, which says his trial in Libya did not meet international standards.

It was unknown what terms Saif’s captors might have set for his release, and why they would have freed a prisoner seen as a major bargaining chip.

Zintan, about 145 km (90 miles) southwest of Tripoli, has its own divisions, but it has been broadly aligned with the government and armed forces based in eastern Libya.

Indonesia, Philippines make arrests linked to city siege

JAKARTA — Indonesian and Philippine authorities have arrested several people suspected of links to Islamic militants who overran a city in the southern Philippines and two others who allegedly helped inspire a double suicide bombing in Jakarta, officials said Thursday. Indonesian national police spokesman Martinus Sitompul said a man arrested Tuesday in the city of Yogyakarta in Central Java is suspected of helping Indonesians travel to Mindanao, where they joined Islamic State group-affiliated militants who still occupy parts of Marawi more than two weeks after their initial attack.

Police only gave the man’s initials and said four of those he helped are among seven Indone-

sians currently sought by Philippine authorities. In the Philippines, officials said Cayamora Maute, the

father of several of the militants behind the Marawi siege, was arrested Tuesday along with four other people at a checkpoint in southern Davao city. Maute was flown Thursday to a maximum-security detention center in metropolitan Manila, the military said.

Former Marawi Mayor Fajad Umpar Salic was also arrested in southern Misamis Oriental province late Wednesday. Maute and Salic denied any role in the Marawi siege, military officials said. More than 200 people — mostly militants involved in the Marawi siege, along with politicians and civilians who back the gunmen — have been ordered arrested, Philippine military chief of staff Gen. Eduardo Ano said.

The audacious attack on Marawi, and the participation of foreign fighters, has been a wakeup call for Southeast Asian governments about the potential of the southern Philippine region to become a magnet for Islamic State group sympathizers as it loses territory it controlled in Syria and Iraq. The Philippine military says those killed since the fighting broke out on May 23 include 20 civilians, 138 militants and 39 government troops. More than 1,560 civilians have been

rescued.

West Java police spokesman Yusri Yunus said two other men were captured Wednesday in the city of Bandung on suspicion of involvement in the May 24 suicide bombings that killed three policemen and the two suicide bombers.

Police said the men, Wachidun Triyono and Muslih Afifi, and another militant arrested earlier, Muhammad Iqbal, held a meeting with the two suicide bombers on May 19 in the West Java town of

Cileunyi during which they steeled their resolve to carry out the bombings. Police also say Iqbal, who was freed from prison in 2015 after serving a sentence for involvement in a bomb-making laboratory discovered in 2010, was the bomb maker.

All those connected to the suicide bombing were members of Jemaah Anshorut Daulah, a network of Indonesian extremist groups that pledges allegiance to Islamic State group leader Abu Bakr alBaghdadi, according to police. (ap)

Even before new political chaos, British economy was limping

LONDON - Britain’s economy appeared to be struggling to pick up pace even before Friday’s inconclusive election result, with industrial output rising less than expected in April after a poor start to 2017. The combination of a lack of economic momentum and the heightened uncertainty about how Prime Minister Theresa May can advance her plans for Brexit might prompt her new government to relax its grip on spending, some analysts said.

Industrial output rose 0.2 percent on the month in April after falling for three months. It was much weaker than a forecast 0.8 percent, and over a three-month period it contracted for the first time since November,

the Office for National Statistics said on Friday. Manufacturing, which is part of overall industrial output, also saw output rise 0.2 percent in April, compared with a forecast of 0.9 percent in the Reuters poll.

The construction sector was much weaker than expected too.

After last year’s shock decision by voters to pull Britain out of the European Union, Britain is now facing more political upheaval after May’s unexpected failure to win a parliamentary majority. “There is clearly a risk that today’s election result causes growth to weaken towards the end of the second quarter,” Ruth Gregory, an economist with Capital Economics, said. “That said, this is unlikely to spell disaster since the economy has proved pretty resilient to political uncertainty in the recent past.”

Britain’s economy slowed sharply in the first three months of 2017, making it the worst performer among the Group of Seven nations after outpacing its peers in 2016, despite the shock of the Brexit vote. As well as rising inflation and slow wage growth weighing on consumers, the economy now has to contend with heightened political uncertainty about Britain’s ability to proceed with its plan to leave the European Union.

Dian Oerip, Reconstructing Indonesian Woven Cloth Fashion forward earth-friendly garments for changing times There are a staggering array of types, functions and styles of woven cloth throughout the archipelago of Indonesia. Every island and countless villages have their own particular methods, motifs and often colours that characterize their particular weavings. Traditionally these defining characteristics were furthered inform by the purpose for which the weavings were made. Certain motifs have significance related to a women’s marriage ceremony or for protection when setting off on a long journey and many other important life events. Certain motifs are used to distinguish someone’s status within their own community or to differentiate them from members of other communities.

As industrially made clothes became more widely available, many of these symbolic and semiotic meanings have been lost or not longer have the same power that they once did - though it should be added that this is more or less true in different parts of this great archipelago. The diminished meaning attributed to woven cloth along with other socio-economic changes have meant that less and less people are weaving these stunning wearable art works.

Dian Oerip is doing her small part to encourage the next generation to keep this rich heritage alive.

Born in Madiun, East Java Dian later moved to Jakarta for work.

She enjoyed travelling to different

remote regions of Indonesia and slowly accumulated a collection of such weavings.

She first started cutting and sewing them together into clothes of her liking as a pastime but so many people appreciated her clothes that in 2009, she made a business out of creating garments that bring together woven cloth from 2 to 3 different parts of Indonesia into a single garment.

Sometimes these clothes are made of two different styles of weaving with small accents of a third style, other times full patchworks emerge. The guiding principles in her creation is to use every last piece of a weaving that she has cut up and creating struc-

tured loose fitting garments that respect the original purpose of the weavings used. After selling these eco-freindly, socially equitable, culturally valuable, reconstructed wearable art works to friends and relatives, an american shop in Florida took interest and started selling her clothes. A short time later another shop in Rotterdam also started selling her works and holds regular fashion shows in which the models perform dances inspired by Indonesia’s equally rich performing arts heritage.

On Satuday May 27th, Dian Oerip’s clothes where photographed on models in Bali, posing in the trendy Limestone Cafe in Denpasar by a group of photographers from

Lingkara Photography Community.

The photo shoot highlighted the traditional art aspect of these garments and simultaneously the very contemporary usage and setting as if to demonstrate that traditional Indonesian woven art is alive and well and is also changing dynamically with the times.

Lingakara Store, that will be opening in a few weeks time, came

to life out of a desire to showcase up-cycled products designed by local artists with the aim of inspiring people towards conscious choices in their consumption of fashion as one of the most polluting industries on the planet. Lingkara Store, located in Denpasar will be the first retailer in Indonesia to carry Dian Oerip’s fashionable clothes that are all cut by Dian herself. (kmb)

DENPASAR — Bali ultimately has a new tourism branding namely Bali, the Island of Gods. This branding was previously discussed by Bali tourism office along with cultural, academician and tourism stakeholders and was then proposed to the ministry of tourism. Having been approved by the ministry, then branding will be launched in Jakarta on June 14.

“Bali, the Island of Gods has included the elements of ‘lovely Bali’ and ‘peaceful Bali.’ So, if we come into the realm of Gods, it means that we treat tourists as in heaven,” said the Head of the Bali Tourism Office, A.A. Gede Yuniartha Putra, when asked for his confirmation on Friday (Jun 9).

According to Yuniartha, Bali,

the Island of Gods is also supported by a logo characterizing Bali. The image of the Bali Island is represented by temple and hibiscus flower. Aside from remaining to include “Bali” though actually “Bali” alone has become a brand that can already be known to the world. This Bali branding will be launched along with the branding of the nine other

destinations in Indonesia. They are Friendly Lombok, Majestic Banyuwangi, Explore Makassar, Enjoy Jakarta and Wonderful Indonesia with the improvement on the logo image. “Besides, there is also branding launch of the ten-New Bali. It will be entirely launched in Jakarta on June 14,” he explained.

After the launch, Yuniartha admitted there will immediate dissemination on the branding of Bali, the Island of Gods. This branding is expected to be better known by many people than the previous Shanti, Shanti, Shanti branding.

Therefore, Bali’s branding will

also be featured in social media to be spread around the world.

“Later on, all the districts or municipality are also expected to create a synergetic branding with the Bali, the Island of Gods. For instance, Klungkung has already made Klungkung, Blue Paradise, while Karangasem has Karangasem: the Spirit of Bali,” he said.

In the meantime, Deputy for International Tourism Marketing Development, Minister of the Tourism, I Gde Pitana, said there are five strengths in the branding of Bali, the Island of Gods namely, culture, divinity, beauty, hospitality and harmony. (kmb32)

Both issues currently get serious concern from the Badung research and development agency.

Head of the Badung Research and Development Agency, Wayan Suambara, recently said that to

meet the needs for clean water mainly in South Kuta region, the seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) is one of the solutions.

“The SWRO has actually been discussed by the directors of the municipality waterworks (PDAM) with me when I was still the Head of the regional development planning board (Bappeda). At that time, I thought it needed studying comprehensively, but until now

there has been no proposal coming to my agency to be studied,” he said.

However, he admitted that the study of SWRO cannot be directly and immediately done because it concerns with internal management of the PDAM Tirta Mangutama.

If asked to review, he claimed to be ready to do so. “We believe the SWRO can be applied as an effort of the PDAM to supply water for

residents in South Badung. It will make the supply of PDAM better,” he said.

Related to the TPST, he admitted that Badung absolutely needed because all this time Badung district does not have its own landfill. Meanwhile, condition of garbage increasingly piles up and the landfill becomes one of the valuation criteria for Adipura Award. However, the handling of

waste, according to him, becomes very important because it relates to the capacity of Badung as a tourist destination and the impact of waste to public health. Building the TPST is a solution. The governance, pattern of formation and the capacity of waste management needs to be studied. “Though having no landfill, Badung can become clean with the TPST,” he explained. (kmb23)

Foreign leaders expressed growing concern over the dispute, which pits Qatar against Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bahrain and Egypt. With backing from U.S. President Donald Trump, they accuse Qatar of supporting their regional arch-rival Iran as well as Islamist militants.

Kuwait has led a regional effort to mediate, but the four states intensified the pressure on Friday by placing dozens of people with alleged links to Qatar on terrorism blacklists.

A senior UAE official followed on Saturday by calling Qatar “duplicitous”, alleging in a series of tweets that its funding of militants had sown chaos and violence throughout the region.

“Qatar has been riding (the) tiger of extremism & terrorism. Cost to region & world too high,” tweeted Anwar Gargash, the UAE minister of state for foreign affairs.

“Diplomacy only way forward.

Process can only work following clear indication that Qatar will stop support & finance of extremism & terrorism.”

“CLEAR AND TRANSPARENT” Qatar’s foreign minister fired back that there was “no clarity” in such accusations, speaking in an interview with RT Arabic in Moscow after emerging from talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

“Qatar is accused of having a hidden relationship with Iran, but its relations with Iran are clear, transparent and time-tested,” said Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani, noting that the UAE does more trade with Iran than Qatar does.

He denied that Qatar supported Egypt’s outlawed Islamist movement, the Muslim Brotherhood, and Hamas, the Palestinian Islamist group that controls the Gaza Strip.

He dismissed as “fantasy” a Saudi media report that he had met in Baghdad with the head of Iran’s Quds Force, controlled by Iran’s powerful Revolutionary Guards.

He said Qatar remained committed to a Kuwaiti-led mediation effort, but that he had yet to receive a clear list of demands.

As conciliation efforts in the Gulf appeared to stall, leaders in Russia, Turkey, Germany and the United States expressed increasing concern.

After German Chancellor Angela Merkel called the situation “very unsettling” on Friday, her foreign minister, Sigmar Gabriel, cautioned on Saturday that it could lead to war.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told Sheikh al-Thani of Moscow’s concern and called for talks.

And Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan - who has pledged food and troops to Qatar in the face of a blockade from its neighbours hosted Bahrain’s foreign minister and urged that the dispute be resolved by the end of the holy month of Ramadan. (rtr)

MARAWI CITY - U.S. special forces have joined the battle to crush Islamist militants holed up in a southern Philippines town, officials said on Saturday, as government forces struggled to make headway and 13 marines were killed in intense urban fighting.

The Philippines military said the United States was providing technical assistance to end the siege of Marawi City by fighters allied to Islamic State, which is now in its third week, but it had no boots on the ground.

“They are not fighting. They are just providing technical support,” military spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Jo-Ar Herrera told a news conference in Marawi City.

The Pentagon, which has no permanent presence in the Philippines but for years has kept 50 to 100 special forces troops in the south of the country on rotational exercises, confirmed it was helping the Philippine military in Marawi.

It said in a statement it was providing Philippine forces with security assistance and training in the areas of intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance. It said it had an additional 300 to 500 troops in the country to support regular training and activities, without giving further details.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, a U.S. official said support included aerial surveillance and targeting, electronic eavesdropping, communications assistance and training. A U.S. P-3 Orion surveillance plane was seen flying over the town on Friday, according

to media reports.

“There is no direct U.S. participation in combat, which is prohibited by Philippine law, although our forces involved in training the Philippine military are authorized to defend themselves,” the U.S. official said.

The cooperation between the longtime allies is significant because Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, who came to power a year ago, has taken a hostile stance towards Washington and has vowed to eject U.S. military trainers and advisers from his country.

The seizure of Marawi City on May 23 has alarmed Southeast Asian nations which fear that Islamic State - facing setbacks in Syria and Iraq - is establishing a stronghold on the Philippine island of Mindanao that could threaten the whole region.

About 40 foreigners have fought alongside the Philippine militants in Marawi City, most of them from Indonesia and Malaysia, though some came from the Middle East.

The Philippines military suffered its biggest one-day loss on Friday since 10 troops were killed in a friendly-fire incident on June 1. Herrera said 13 marines conducting clearing operations died after an “intense” houseto-house firefight during which they encountered improvised explosive devices and were attacked by rocketpropelled grenades.

Sweden’s Museum of Failure celebrates products that flopped

HELSINGBORG — Green Heinz ketchup? Fatfree Pringles? Colgate frozen lasagna? You don’t need to be an expert to know these products weren’t successful.

Which is why these creations, with dozens of others, feature in the new Museum of Failure , a wacky parade of rejected products from years gone by set up in the Swedish town of Helsingborg.

It’s the brainchild of 43-year-old curator and clinical psychologist Samuel West. The idea came to him while on holiday and he quickly purchased the internet domain name.

West later realized he’d accidentally misspelled “museum” — a sure sign the project would succeed.

“We know that 80 to 90 percent of innovation projects, they fail and you never read about them, you don’t see them, people don’t talk about them,” West says. “And if there’s anything we can do from these failures, is learn from them.”

Many items in the museum show companies’ attempts

to diversify their brand. There’s Coca-Cola’s BlaK coffee beverage and Pepsi’s Crystal clear soda.

Iconic motorcycle manufacturer Harley-Davidson makes an appearance with a men’s eau-du-toilette, launched in the mid-1990s.

“The fans hated it,” West says. “They had Christmas ornaments, Barbie dolls, all kinds of other stuff with the Harley-Davidson logo and it sort of trivializes the brand.”

Even one of the world’s best-known businessmen, President Donald Trump, makes an appearance.

The “I’m Back And You’re Fired” board game from 2004 looks like Monopoly, but players use “T’’ branded pieces and the paper notes are adorned with Trump’s image.

“It’s a boring version of Monopoly. It’s simplified so stupid people can play it, but it’s also horribly boring,” West says.

The Museum of Failure is also home to some high-tech devices, including Google’s Glass headset with augmented reality display and in-built camera.

“The problem was Google released it too early, it was still a prototype, so it was full of bugs,” West says.

Segway’s two-wheeled electric mobility device is also featured.

“The Segway was supposed to revolutionize the way we transport people,” West says. “And we all know that the Segway today is used by tourists before they go get drunk.”

Experts say innovation is tough and failure is often part of the process.

“You’re working on the edge of tomorrow,” says Nicolai de Gier, a professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. “It’s like the other part of trying is failing, so it’s just a very natural thing and very important thing.”

West says many brands featured in his museum want nothing to do with it. But he says other companies have booked large group visits, perhaps to learn from past mistakes.

“It’s liberating for us, when we try out a new skill or learn something, it’s OK to fail,” he says.

The museum does offer some hope. On display is an Apple Newton personal digital assistant from 1993. The bulky black device paved the way for the iPhones and iPads that millions use today.

The Museum of Failure opens June 7 and will stay in its gallery space until at least early September. Entry is 100 Swedish kroner, or approximately $11. (ap)

DUTCH colonial did not only pass down buildings. In fact, janger art also became an entertainment during colonial period in Buleleng.

Janger art from Menyali village, Sawan, is an art heritage emerging during the colonial period. To preserve and evoke the nostalgia during the heyday of Janger dance of Menyali village, the Janger Saraswati art troupe presented the result of its dance reconstruction in the arena of the 39th Bali Arts Festival (BAF) 2017.

“The arrangement of the bathing place was started last March,” he said, not long ago.

This also offers a place of malukat or purificatory rite. Before trying, all the pilgrims are required to perform a special ritual because it is in a sanctified area, namely in the middle courtyard of the Ayu Taman Temple.

The coolest water sensation is under the banyan tree located in the innermost courtyard of Ayu Taman Temple, but this place cannot be entered carelessly. It is intended for holy activities such as invoking holy water for ngaben (cremation) ceremony or temple festival activities. “Before doing purificatory rite, at the outermost courtyard of the Ayu Taman Temple, the pilgrims must say prayers first,” said Mangku.

Mangku added that having purificatory rite at this spring is believed to be able to cure various diseases such as skin disease, allergies as well as others. “Soaking for 15 minutes will give sensation of having soaked our body in ice water,” he added. (sos)

Before making a performance in the BAF arena at Denpasar Art Center, not long ago this janger art troupe appeared on stage in the BAF for Buleleng district recently.

Appearance of the Janger from Menyali drew the attention of the audience. It happens because the dancers are elderly. Previously, the janger was danced around the 1960s and 1970s. At that time, male dancers were better known as the appearance of jipak (male janger dancers of Menyali—Ed).

Headman of Menyali, Made Jaya Harta, said that

jipak in the janger dance of his village used to be wearing dapper costumes. The costumes were inspired by the Dutch Army landed in Buleleng customs (now, former harbor of Buleleng—Ed). Over the course of time, costume and style of the janger slowly disappeared due to the influence of other arts, including contemporary janger. “The song and dance movements are similar. However, when compared to contemporary janger, the costumes are quite striking. This dance was once staged to Lombok. The heyday has disappeared so the art heritage of our village is threatened by extinction,” he said.

According to Harta, his village government has done reconstruction to Janger Menyali since February 2017. The reconstruction is made because the janger dance is believed to be a sacred art and even categorized into sacred dance. To that end, he is committed to preserving the Janger Menyali dance. “We have to preserve the ancestral heritage having existed since the Dutch era. This reconstruction began by teaming up with the old dancers, and then we will regenerate the dancers, so that this dance is sustainable as the pride of Buleleng,” he explained. (mud)

Plug in stick, minister of home affairs releases BAF parade

Saving water, inspired by Danghyang Nirartha’s story

DENPASAR - ‘Saving water’ becomes the main message delivered in the 39th Bali Arts Festival (BAF) parade in front of Bajra Sandhi Monument, Renon, Denpasar, on Saturday (Jun 10). Moreover, this year the BAF features the theme Ulundanu (preserving water as source of life). The release of the parade was marked by plugging in teteken (stick) inspired by the story of Danghyang Nirartha.

The stick was plugged in by Minister of Home Affairs, Tjahjo Kumolo, coming with the Minister of Tourism, Arief Yahya. A moment later, suddenly the water burst from a replica of a giant purple lotus brought by the dancers of the ISI Denpasar. The art envoy of ISI Denpasar then displayed Ketug Bumi and Siwanataraja dance.

It’s like the story of Danghyang Nirartha who came to Bali and brought a teakwood stick to Jati Temple.

Originally, the place was so dry, but afterward there was clear water coming out of a chunk when Danghyang Nirartha stuck his stick into the ground.

Governor of Bali, Made Mangku Pastika, said that the theme of BAF this year is very factual and becomes a daily problem. However, Pastika refused when Bali is currently said to be in danger of experiencing a water crisis. As long as water is well managed, the threat of water crisis is believed not to happen. “Now, the water is still much wasted to the sea like the water of Unda River. This surface water should be well managed. If well managed, people do not need to suck from the bottom (underground water—Ed),” he said.

According to Pastika, the display of the art parade has depicted various forms of community activities based on local wisdom values related to the theme of Ulundanu.

Certainly, it should be in the context of utilizing, preserving and glorifying water as a source of life as well as a source of civilization. “Saving water is taken because it becomes the most needed commodity by society. Water is life,” he explained.

Minister of Home Affairs, Tjahjo Kumolo, said that BAF should be able to become an inspiration for Balinese people and those of other regions in Indonesia.

Particularly, it is the matter of building tourism and cultural destinations as well as maintaining their respective cultural traditions. “Bali province may be advanced, the people of Bali may become more modern, but they should not leave their customary identity, culture and the belief existing in Bali,” he said.

Tjahjo added that in the future the BAF should be developed into a unifying event for the community and between the regions. Conversely, Tjahjo also briefly mentioned that the president was absent because of his busy agenda including the president’s apology to the whole of Balinese community. “He has busy schedule, so that he decided (to present at BAF—Ed) next year (2018—Ed),” he concluded.

Meanwhile, Minister of Tourism, Arief Yahya, said that BAF is currently becoming viral in social media.

It was evidenced by the two hashtags in social media namely #pestakesenianbali and #yuknontonpkb2017 having become the trending topic. “This BAF confirms Bali as a cultural-based main tourist destination. If competed to any other regions in Indonesia and overseas, it rarely matches this treasure of Bali,” he said.

Minister vivaciously watches omed-omedan attraction DENPASAR - Denpasar art envoy made a furor by displaying the omed-omedan tradition in the 39th Bali Arts Festival (BAF) parade in front of the Bajra Sandhi at Renon, Denpasar, on Saturday (Jun 10). Not a few officials on the stage of honor should be standing up to perpetuate the tradition of Kaja hamlet, Sesetan. Though did not stand up, two ministers of the Working Cabinet attending the event namely Minister of Home Affairs Tjahjo Kumolo and Minister of Tourism Arief Yahya also looked enthusiastic to witness the omed-omedan.

Head of the Bali Culture Agency, Dewa Putu Beratha, said that every district / municipality this year is newly required to display their typical traditions in the BAF parade. Some districts also presented their branding.

Denpasar City, for instance, presented Baris dance, Gianyar presented Kecak dance while Badung came with Frangipani dance.

“We oblige to present their distinctive art as the preservation of tradition. Actually, every year we are asked by central government to propose the registration of traditions existing in Bali,” he explained.

Aside from making furor due to the omed-omedan, Denpasar ornamental vehicle carrying gamelan players had trouble to move while passing in front of the stage of honor. It even almost hit the crowd of spectators for several times. Minister of Tourism, Arief Yahya, was even seen to also give a hand sign for the vehicle to back first so as to have space to move forward. After a few minutes, the vehicle was finally able to leave the stage of honor.

Another unique attraction occurred when the art envoy of Gianyar displayed an innovative artwork entitled Empelan Tain Kambing (literally, dam of goat dung). This artwork tells about farmers at Keliki village that cannot grow rice due to erratic water supply. Local headman named Ki Pasek then asked for help to King of Mengwi.

LOS ANGELES - Taylor Swift got back together with Spotify on Friday, returning her music to streaming services almost three years after complaining publicly they did not pay artists enough, and on the same day rival Katy Perry released a new album.

Swift, one of the world’s bestselling pop stars, also made her music available on Pandora, Amazon.com and Tidal streaming services, her management team said. Her catalog had previously only been available on Apple Inc’s Music service.

The pop star’s management said the latest decision to return to all streaming services was taken to celebrate her album “1989” selling over 10 million copies worldwide. “ Ta y l o r w a n t s t o thank her fans by making her entire back catalog

available to all streaming services at midnight,” her management’s Instagram account called Taylor Nation said late on Thursday.

The move coincided with the release on Friday of “Witness,” a new album by Perry, Swift’s pop industry rival with whom she has a long-running personal feud. Swift, 27, has no new album to promote.

Swift pulled all her music off Spotify and other streaming services in November 2014 after writing an opinion piece in the Wall Street Journal saying that “piracy, file sharing and streaming have shrunk the numbers of paid album

sales drastically... Valuable things should be paid for. It’s my opinion that music should not be free.”

Six months later she struck a deal with Apple Music for her “1989” album after Apple bowed to pressure and agreed to pay artists during a free trial of its new streaming music service.

The announcement by Swift may ramp up rivalry with Perry, 32, who released her new album’s first single, “Swish Swish,” last month. She told talk show host Jimmy Fallon the song was “a great anthem for people to use whenever somebody’s trying to hold you down or bully you.” (rtr)

“We want a big majority to be able to act and transform France over the next five years,” Mounir Mahjoubi, a junior minister in Macron’s government, told Reuters as he was canvassing for support in the northern Paris constituency where he is a candidate.
