US actress Lori Loughlin faces new charge in college bribery scandal NEW YORK - American actress Lori Loughlin was hit with a second charge on Tuesday stemming from a college admissions bribery scandal, increasing the likelihood that she could serve time in prison.

The actress, known for her role on “Full House,” now faces the charge of conspiracy to commit money laundering in addition to conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud, federal prosecutor Andrew Lelling said.

The second charge is punishable by up to 20 years in jail, bringing the total prison time she now potentially faces to 40 years.

Unlike actress Felicity Huffman, who was also among 33 parents charged in the case, Loughlin has so far chosen not to plead guilty -- a move that, in addition to avoiding trial, usually results in a reduced sentence.

In Huffman’s case, the prosecutor’s office on Monday recommended a sentence corresponding to the bottom end of the possible range, which provides for a minimum of four months in prison.

The sentencing judge is not however required to follow this recommendation.

Even if Loughlin decided to plead guilty later, the recommended sentence would probably be significantly higher due to the second charge as well as the amount of money involved.

Huffman pleaded guilty to paying $15,000 to help her eldest daughter get better scores on the SAT college entrance exam, while Loughlin and her husband are accused of paying $500,000 so that their two daughters could gain entrance into the University of Southern California.

The ringleader behind the scam, William “Rick” Singer, who authorities say was paid about $25 million dollars to bribe coaches and university administrators, has pleaded guilty and is cooperating with authorities. According to prosecutors, the accused parents paid a firm run by Singer to cheat on college entrance exams for their children or to bribe coaches to help non-athletic students get sports scholarships. Camila Cabello to star in remake of ‘Cinderella’

NEW YORK - Cuban-American singer Camila Cabello will try on the glass slipper when she takes on the lead role in a remake of “Cinderella,” a source close to the project said Tuesday.

The decision to cast a Hispanic woman is a significant break from a long tradition of white and usually blonde Cinderellas.

Cabello, a multi-platinum selling and Grammy-nominated singer/ songwriter, will also help write the film’s songs.

The project grew out of an original idea from late-night television host James Corden, the source told AFP. The remake was first reported by the entertainment magazine The Hollywood Reporter.

Corden -- best known for “The Late Late Show” and his “Carpool Karaoke” series -- will co-produce the film through the company Fulwell 73, of which he is a partner.

At the helm will be director Kay Cannon, who is no stranger to breaking the Hollywood mold with femaledriven narratives. Cannon wrote the box office hit “Pitch Perfect” franchise, which tells the story of female friendships through a humorous take on competitive college a capella.

She made her directorial debut in 2018 with the critically acclaimed comedy “Blockers,” which flipped the typically male-oriented teen coming-of-age script and grossed over $93 million worldwide.

The iconic princess role is the latest chapter in Cabello’s own Cinderella story: she gained recognition at age 16 as part of the girl group Fifth Harmony.

She left the group in 2016 to pursue a solo career and became a global household name in August the following year when her hit song “Havana” soared to the top of the pop radio chart. Cabello released her self-titled album in January 2018, which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart.

Now 22, Cabello is the latest actress to take on the role of Cinderella. The film, which will be made

by Sony affiliate Columbia, is on the fast track for production.

Migrant CARE denounces hoax circulating on preliminary election abroad

JAKARTA - Migrant Care, a non-governmental organization advocating for immigrant Indonesians working abroad, denounced a hoax spread on Indonesia’s overseas election ballots’ result and put its support behind the General Election Commission to comprehensively investigate the perpetrators.

“This hoax was possibly circulated to further complicate matters concerning the preliminary elections overseas on Apr 8-14, as a means of turning up the heat ahead of the simultaneous elections here on April 17, 2019,” Migrant CARE Executive Director Wahyu Susilo noted in a press statement received here on Wednesday.

Susilo has gauged that irresponsible parties had spread the hoax aimed at delegitimizing the credibility of election organizers.

Hence, Migrant CARE had lent full support to the General Election

Commission to take this case to the realm of law.

Susilo called for special focus to be laid on the preliminary election for Indonesians residing abroad. With three diverse vote-casting methods through polling stations, mobile dropbox, and post mail, a special monitoring mechanism is necessary to ascertain adherence to the election’s principles of fairness, direct, general, free, and confidential.

Migrant CARE has observed that during the election period from 2004 to 2019, no monitoring mechanism was in place to enable

election supervisors to ascertain the safety of the shipped mobile dropbox. Hence, Migrant CARE, as the official observer of the Indonesian elections abroad, has called on the General Election Supervisory Body to facilitate access to surveillance and monitoring the delivery of ballots from the mobile dropbox and post mail.

Moreover, Migrant CARE will send Indonesian election observers to nations, including Malaysia, Singapore, and Hong Kong, having a long list of permanent voters in the preliminary election.

Foreigner Indonesia’s Foreign Ministry has made assurance that the Overseas Election Committee (PPLN) will conduct the counting of votes of Indonesians taking part in the 2019 Parliamentary and Presidential Elections scheduled on Apr 17.

This statement was made by Lalu Muhammad Iqbal, the ministry’s Director for the Protection of Indonesian Nationals and Entities Abroad, in his brief message made available to journalists in Jakyarta, Wednesday.

“Different vote-casting methods are applied and the time zones of Indonesia and overseas nations and territories differ,” he stated, adding that the methods followed

First quarter, aircraft movement at Ngurah Rai Airport declines MANGUPURA — The number of aircraft movement at Ngurah Rai Airport during the first quarter of 2019 decreased slightly by 36,519 aircrafts, or down 3.3 percent when compared to the record during the period of 2018. The number of movement in the same period in 2018 reached 37,763 movements.

“Just like the records during the period of January to February 2019,

the aircraft movement during the period January-March 2019 also declined, namely 1,244 movements or 3.3 percent,” said General Manager of PT Angkasa Pura I (Persero) Branch Office for Ngurah Rai International Airport, Haruman Sulaksono, on Wednesday (Apr. 10).

Haruman explained that during the first quarter of 2019, there were 19,012 movements from domestic

routes, with details of 9,505 aircraft coming to Bali, 9,469 aircrafts leaving Bali as well as 38 transfer aircraft movements. During the same period in 2018, the number of movement of domestic aircraft was recorded at 20,958 movements with 10,402 aircrafts coming to the Island of the Gods, 10,424 departing aircrafts, and 132 transfer aircrafts. “If making comparison of aircraft movements

in domestic routes in the first quarter of 2019 to 2018, there is a decrease in the number of aircraft movements by 1,946 movements or a decrease of 10.24 percent,” he said.

Meanwhile, the movements on international routes amounted to 17,507 aircrafts with details of 8,771 departing aircrafts and 8,736 arriving aircrafts. For the same period in 2018, there were 16,805 aircraft movements of international routes, consisting of 8,404 aircraft movements from international departure routes, and 8,401 movements from arrival routes.

In contrast to the aircraft movements, the number of passengers in the first three months of 2019 showed an increase. A total of 5,397,499 registered passengers have been served.

He added the garbage delivered to the Mandung landfill consist of dirty plastic waste and is not acceptable to collectors or waste banks. Nevertheless, later the plastic waste will still be sorted by officers at the Mandung Landfill so that the amount of residue

Hungarian Roma designer fights stereotypes with fashion BUDAPEST - Hungarian Roma fashion designer Erika Varga says her label is about stitching together cultural traditions and snipping through stereotypes as much as it’s about dressmaking.

“Fashion is a branch of art that interests and connects people, nonRoma and Roma,” the founder of Romani Design said.

Often blamed for petty crime, the Roma, Hungary’s largest ethnic minority, face widespread discrimination, poverty and exclusion from mainstream society.

“In most cases, Roma appear in a pejorative way in the media.

“Many turn away from their own culture... But people need positive role models, not just the majority in society but also Roma people themselves,” the 47-yearold designer said.

Founded in 2010 by Varga to promote Roma fashion and identity, her Romani Design studio brought out its first collection the same year.

Now, her evening dresses can sell for up to 1,000 euros ($1,100).

“As a Roma-run social enterprise, it’s unique in the world,” Varga told AFP, ahead of International Roma Day on Monday.

“We don’t make mass-produced T-shirts but clothes that carry messages, like on minority rights and integration,” she added.

- ‘Rebel Spirit’ -

Varga’s latest range, called Rebel Spirit, is inspired by strong female figures, including her mother, late grandmother and 20th century Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, a hero of hers.

The small, long-haired designer said she asked “nonconforming women who have overcome challenges in their lives” to model the range.

“It’s important to express openness in what you wear,” said one of the models, Adel Onodi, 23, who became the first transgender woman to appear on the front cover of a Hungarian fashion magazine last year.

After leaving school in eastern Hungary, Varga soon set up her own jewellery-making business before branching out into fashion design.

Now, she employs five staff, including her folk-singer sister, who design and make the frocks at Varga’s home studio on the outskirts of Budapest where she lives with her husband and two dogs.

Varga says that she is not put off running a business by conventional attitudes in the Roma community on women’s role in society.

“My own mother all her life was involved in trading clothes, so for me it’s completely normal to be both Roma and a businesswoman,” she said.

Traditional Roma motifs like flowers are a typical feature of her designs, particularly one of her favourites, the

rose -- a symbol of femininity -- which adorns even the slippers she wears while pedalling her sewing machine.

Most of her skirts and dresses are long, in line with Roma tradition.

Daring combinations of bright colours –- “brought by the Roma over the centuries from India and Asia,” she says -- also characterise her outfits.

Rozina Patkai, a Hungarian singer who wears Varga’s clothes during her performances, says they often attract compliments.

“The main thing is that I feel confident in these clothes,” she tells AFP.

Underground cable project of PLN deploys special officers MANGUPURA — Underground cable excavation project with drill technique at Ungasan, Jimbaran, and Kedonganan, South Kuta, have caused congestion in several places, especially in places where the drilling machine is operated. It has been anticipated by the project contractor by deploying officers to regulate traffic.

Public Relations Officer of PT Prismian Cables & System, the contractor working on this project, in a press release on Wednesday (Apr. 10) stated the drill works and the placement between one machine and another is around 100 meters to 200 meters. Such a way is expected to prevent long congestion. When the project is worked on, there are special officers regulating the traffic condition. “Anticipating congestion in the Jimbaran area is the main priority of the project contractor,” said the press release.

The excavation of the PLN cable with the 150 kV high voltage cable line (SKTT) is stated to apply a new system to reduce the clutter of utilities. The highvoltage cable planting is scheduled to be completed by May 2019. The implementation is expected not to disrupt community activities, especially road users. The projects with the underground (drill) system are expected to be safer if something happens. This gets

a serious concern from both the project contractor and the PLN. Both have coordinated intensively according to the draft related to the licensing and the workmanship process.

PT Prismian Cables & System, as the project executor in the field, has also coordinated with Denpasar Metro National Road Authority (PJN) for the national roads. Meanwhile, in Badung district area this project passes three road segments namely the road around Bali Cliff Hotel at Pecatu, Jalan Raya Jimbaran and Jalan Segara Madu at Kelan village, Tuban. This project ends at Ngurah Rai Airport, Tuban, Kuta.

The progress of the underground cable project has gone in accordance with the plan. Specifically for the underground transmission workmanship in the Jimbaran area indeed received extra attention from the project contractor. This happens because the main road leads to the beach tourism area as well as hotels in the vicinity.

Her studio organises mentoring programmes aimed at helping more Roma youngsters get into the fashion business.

She says that many in the local rag trade dismiss the firm as a “gypsy brand”, even though, for centuries, Hungarian and Roma clothing traditions and motifs have overlapped.

Most of its buyers are “sociallyconscious”, middle-class, non-Roma, who buy online, she says, or foreigners at the three or four trade fairs abroad attended by the studio every year.

The soaking by the pachyderms kicks off a weekend of festivities for Songkran, the traditional Buddhist new year celebration which officially begins on April 13.

Revellers “can come to pay respects to Buddha and offer alms to monks in the morning and in the afternoon play water with the elephants,” said Laithongren Meepan, owner of the Ayutthaya Elephant Camp. “(Using their trunks to spray water) is the elephants’ natural way of playing,” he added.

Traditionally marked by paying respects to elders and sprinkling water over Buddha figures at local temples, the Songkran holiday has largely evolved into a raucous water fight.

Locals and foreigners armed with water guns and protective googles engage in soggy street parties, bringing much of the country to a standstill.

“In other provinces, they have foam parties. But in Ayutthaya, you can celebrate Songkran with the elephants,” Laithongren told AFP. Their handlers, known as mahouts, have trained the giant mammals to do tricks like lifting their front foot in greeting or gyrating their bodies to music as if they were dancing -- much to the delight of revellers.

SINGAPORE - A 40-metre indoor waterfall cascading through a steel and glass dome is at the heart of a vast complex in Singapore’s main airport unveiled Thursday, part of the city-state’s fight for global flights.

Reportedly built for a cool Sg$1.7 billion ($1.25 billion), the “Jewel” centre has gardens growing over four storeys, as well as 280 retail and food outlets, a hotel and cinema. It links to three of the airport’s terminals.

But analysts were sceptical the 135,700 square metre (1.4 million square feet) complex would be a hit

with transiting passengers -- immigration has to be cleared to reach it and Changi airport already has high standard facilities.

As well as an attraction for visitors to Singapore, it is also billed as a destination in its own right for local residents. Jewel started welcoming a limited number of visitors this week, and will open fully to the public next Wednesday.

It is part of efforts by Changi -the world’s seventh busiest airport for international traffic -- to attract long-haul travellers over other hubs such as Hong Kong and Dubai.

“Passengers are spending a

longer time as they transit through airports, which is the reason why there is a need for us to increase the amenities,” said Jayson Goh, a senior executive at Changi Airport Group.

But Brendan Sobie, chief analyst at the Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation, said that Jewel would “primarily be used by local residents and some departing passengers”.

“Attracting transit passengers is not realistic as they would need to clear immigration and there are so many great facilities (inside the airport) already that makes Changi a top transit airport,” he said. (afp)

German govt buys new planes after embarrassing technical faults

The German government has purchased three new Airbus 350 long-haul planes for official trips after a series of embarrassing technical failures with its current fleet, including one which grounded Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Berlin will pay 1.2 billion euros ($1.3 billion) for the three A350s, the first to be delivered in 2020 and the remaining two in 2022, the ministry said Wednesday.

“The brand new planes will boost the flight readiness of the defence ministry’s long-haul capacities,” it said. Once are delivered, the A340300s currently in service would be phased out, it added.

Among the embarrassing technical failures that hit the government service fleet in the last months was one in November affecting Merkel.

The chancellor missed the beginning of a G20 summit in Buenos Aires as the plane carrying her from Berlin encountered electrical problems and was forced to land in Cologne.

The “Konrad Adenauer” Airbus was given a complete overhaul following the incident but on its first outing since on April 1, it blew a tyre on landing in New York with Foreign Minister Heiko Maas on board.

The plane eventually had to be towed to its parking space, but the delay meant that Maas missed his first appointments at the UN. In March, the foreign minister was stranded in Mali due to a hydraulic problem with his Airbus A319’s landing gear. The plane woes have also hit other top German officials.

At the end of January, President Frank-Walter Steinmeier was stuck in Ethiopia for similar reasons while Development Minister Gerd Mueller had to cancel a trip to Namibia at the start of the year owing to problems with his plane.

With the Konrad Adenauer back in the repair workshop, Finance Minister Olaf Scholz had to fly on a smaller plane, the A321, which required mid-route refuelling in Iceland to complete its journey to the United States. (afp)

IMF forecast: Global growth will weaken this year to 3.3%

WASHINGTON - The International Monetary Fund on Tuesday downgraded its outlook for growth in the United States, Europe, Japan and the overall global economy and pointed to heightened trade tensions as a key reason.

The IMF expects the world economy to grow 3.3% this year, down from 3.6% in 2018. That would match 2016 for the weakest year since 2009. In its previous forecast in January, the IMF had predicted that international growth would reach 3.5% this year.

For the United States, IMF economists downgraded their growth forecast for this year to 2.3% from 2.9% in 2018.

The gloomier picture in the IMF’s latest World Economic Outlook contributed to a selloff in stocks, with investors concerned that slower global growth could weaken corporate earnings. It comes on the eve of meetings in Washington this week of the IMF and its sister lending organization, the World Bank. Those meetings are likely to be dominated by discussions of how to combat growing risks to international growth.

“This is a delicate moment for the global

economy,” Gita Gopinath, the IMF’s chief economist, said at a news conference, while cautioning that the fund does not foresee an international recession.

Gopinath said it was “imperative that costly policy mistakes are avoided.” In particular, she highlighted the need for the world’s two biggest economies, the United States and China, to find a way to resolve their trade war, which has intensified global economic uncertainty.

If trade tensions worsen, Gopinath warned that it could trigger “large disruptions in global supply chains.”

In Europe, the IMF expects the 19 countries that use the euro currency to expand 1.3% collectively in 2019, weaker than last year’s 1.8% growth or in any year since 2013.

Japan is expected to eke out 1% growth this year, up from 0.8% in 2018 but slightly down

from the fund’s earlier forecast.

The IMF foresees the Chinese economy growing 6.3% this year, down from 6.6% in 2018. But the fund’s latest 2019 outlook was a slight upgrade from the 6.2% growth it had forecast for China in January.

China’s prospects brightened, the fund said, after President Donald Trump decided to suspend a planned increase in tariffs on $200 billion worth of U.S.-bound Chinese exports.

Still, the fund is expressing worries about tensions between the world’s two biggest economies, which have traded tariffs on hundreds of billions of dollars’ worth of products in a fight over China’s aggressive push to supplant American technological supremacy.

The prospect of Britain’s messy departure from the European Union also weighs on the global economy.

The IMF expects growth in world trade to drop to 3.4% this year — a sharp slowdown from the 4% it had expected in January and from 3.8% trade growth in 2018. (ap)

Sudanese call ‘regime has fallen’ as army announcement awaited

KHARTOUM - Sudanese crowds demanding the ouster of President Omar al-Bashir flooded to the army headquarters on Thursday chanting “the regime has fallen,” as they awaited an “important announcement” from the military.

Sources and witnesses told AFP that soldiers had raided both the state television and the offices of a group linked to Bashir’s ruling party.

Thousands of Khartoum residents were filling the area around army headquarters where protesters have held an unprecedented sit-in now in its sixth day.

“The Sudanese army will issue an important statement soon. Wait for it,” the state television anchor said, without giving further details.

Army vehicles carrying troops were seen deploying in the centre of Khartoum.

As martial music replaced normal programming, a source working at state television told AFP that at about 5:00 am (0300 GMT) a group of army officers came to the building.

They ordered technicians to broadcast only that the army would be making an important announcement soon.

Soldiers also raided the offices of the Islamic Movement, the ideological wing of the Bashir’s ruling National Congress Party, witnesses told AFP. - ‘Regime must go’ -

The protests, which erupted in December over the government’s

tripling of the price of bread, have become the biggest challenge yet to Bashir’s three decades of ironfisted rule.

“We are waiting for big news,” one protester told AFP from the sit-in.

“We won’t leave from here until we know what it is. But we do know that Bashir has to go.

“We had enough of this regime -- 30 years of repression, corruption, rights abuses, it’s enough.”

Demonstrators have spent five nights defiantly camped outside the sprawling headquarters complex, which also houses Bashir’s official residence and the defence ministry.

There has been an often festive mood at the sit-in, with protesters singing and dancing to the tunes of revolutionary songs.

The group spearheading the nationwide demonstrations urged residents of the capital to join the sit-in and thousands heeded it call.

“We call on our people from across the Khartoum capital and the region around to immediately go to the sit-in area and not leave from there until our next statement is issued,” the Sudanese Professionals Association said.

has formed with opposition parties and some rebel groups from Sudan’s war-torn regions said the sit-in would continue until Bashir steps down and makes way for sweeping reforms.

“We have to continue to gather at the sit-in area until the conditions of our revolution as agreed by our alliance have been met,” the Alliance for Freedom and Change said.

The demonstrators have braved repeated volleys of tear gas from members of the powerful National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS) since they began camping outside the complex on Saturday, protest organisers say.

But for the first time on Tuesday night they did not face any “threat” from security agents, said a protester who requested anonymity for security reasons.

That came after 11 people, including six members of the security forces, were killed on Tuesday during demonstrations in the capital, government spokesman Hassan Ismail told the official SUNA news agency.

US warship cruises disputed sea in Philippine war games MANILA - A US warship laden with hi-tech fighter planes took centre stage at key war games in the Philippines Thursday, brandishing military might as fresh tensions bubble in the contentious South China Sea. The amphibious assault ship USS Wasp, with at least 10 F-35B stealth jets on deck, stood guard as amphibious tanks rolled onto a Philippine beach located a short sail from islands also claimed by China.

The vessel was in the area for long-running US-Philippine military drills, which come as Manila pushes back against the recent presence of hundreds of Chinese ships near its Pag-asa (Thitu) island.

“We can’t disclose the official movements of the USS Wasp for security reasons, but they have been operating in the South China Sea region... as part of the exercise,” US spokeswoman Second Lieutenant Tori Sharpe told reporters.

President Rodrigo Duterte had largely set aside the once-tense dispute over China’s expansive claims to the resource-rich waterway, but told Beijing last week to back off over the “swarming” Chinese boats.

The Philippines called the boats’ presence “illegal” and Duterte threatened China with possible military action if it touches the island.

China claims most of the sea, including waters and islands close to the shores of its neighbours. It has built artificial islands and military installations that the US warned could curtail right of passage by non-Chinese vessels.

The Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia, Taiwan and Vietnam have also all staked claims to various islands and reefs in the sea that is thought to have rich petroleum reserves deep beneath its waters. The Wasp’s participation in the exercises represents “an increase in military capability committed to a free and open Indo-Pacific region,” the US navy said in a press release on its arrival last week.

The two-week Balikatan (Shoulder-to-shoulder) exercises, which opened April 1, include some 4,000 Philippine, 3,500 American, and 50 Australian troops. Duterte had threatened to quit the drills as part of his pivot away from former colonial master the US and toward China, but they have carried on after being toned down for a few years.

As Duterte has adopted a friendlier stance with China, the US has moved to shore up its ties with Manila and assert its presence in the South China Sea. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo pledged in March to come to the Philippines’ defence in case of an “armed attack” in the sea, a clear assurance Philippines leaders had long sought.

Duterte has been criticised at home as being too eager to grow ties with Beijing, and giving up too much leverage on the South China Sea issue.

In Yemen, the Sana’a-based overseas election committee will manage eligible voters residing in Hadhramaut to exercise their voting right on Apr 8, while residents of European, American, and Asian Continents will follow suit on Apr 13.

“Nevertheless, the counting of votes will be conducted concurrently on Apr 17,” Iqbal, who steadfastly denounced rumors spread across different social media platforms of the counting of the marked ballot papers of voters residing abroad being completed.

Commissioner of the General Elections Commission Hasyim Asy’ari had earlier announced Apr 17 as the day for the counting of votes.

The overseas voting activities were organized in the Yemeni city of Sana’a on Apr 8 and thereafter in Panama and the capital city of Ecuador, Quito, on Apr 9. On Wednesday, eligible voters residing in Bangkok and Songkhla, Thailand, cast their ballot, he remarked. The General Election Commission (KPU) has lined up five rounds of presidential debates for the Joko Widodo-Ma’ruf Amin and Prabowo Subianto-Sandiaga Uno pairs for the 2019 presidential election.

The first and second presidential debates were organized on January 17 and February 17, 2019, respectively, during which the two presidential candidates expressed their views and perspectives on issues encompassing law, corruption, terrorism, the environment, and infrastructure.

The third debate, on Mar 17, drew focus to educational, employment, health, as well as social and cultural issues, while the fourth round, covering international and ideological issues, was organized on Mar 30, while the fifth round, focusing on economic issues, will take place on Apr 13.(ant/ap)

Music for the masses winning Indonesian voter’s hearts

From Indonesia’s hip-swivelling juggernaut dangdut to thumping rock bands and Islaminfused tunes, music could be the clincher for winning hearts -- and votes -- as the world’s third-biggest democracy heads to the polls next week.

Political platforms aside, candidates know it is entertainment that draws the crowds to campaign rallies in music-mad Indonesia.

Just ask millennial voter Muhammad Ariel, who went to a concert where popular rock band Radja performed in support of president Joko Widodo, better known as Jokowi.

Screaming “where are Jokowi’s fans”, Radja’s energetic show and thumbs-up for Indonesia’s heavymetal music loving leader resonates with young voters like Ariel, who make up almost one third of the electorate.

Jokowi’s camp has said that winning over millennial and first time voters was crucial.

“I’m a Radja fan because their songs are great, but it’s also because we’re going to vote for the same candidate,” Ariel said from the rally near the capital Jakarta.

More than 190 million people are set to cast a ballot for thousands of candidates, from the president down to local legislators, in the Southeast Asian nation’s biggestever election on April 17.

Music is essential in this nation of 260 million, where song-anddance is a staple of television shows, sporting events, presidential debates and even the central bank’s recent economic review. And it’s a must-do at election time.

“Music is meant to capture the interest of people on the lower rungs of society,” said Hamdi Muluk, a University of Indonesia psychology professor who has a speciality in politics and voter behaviour.

- ‘Part of the lifestyle’ -

Jokowi’s rival Prabowo Subianto is banking on capturing the

attention of conservative voters in the world’s biggest Muslim majority nation with concerts featuring Islam-inspired gambus music.

The retired general’s musical arsenal also includes Rhoma Irama, a geriatric-looking version of Elvis Presley who is famed as the King of Dangdut.

The hugely popular style -which runs the gamut from religion-inspired lyrics to a raunchier version involving sensual dance moves similar to twerking -- takes its cue from Hindustani and Arabic music.

Dangdut is infused with a hypnotic percussion beat backed by a multi-instrument band.

Every Indonesian knows it, there are television channels dedicated to it, and dangdut is performed everywhere from the smallest villages to bustling Jakarta -- and the beat ramps up during election time.

The promise of a legendary crooner like Irama, clad in a white jumpsuit, is what got housewife Alima Kholil out to a huge rally for Subianto in vote-rich West Java, despite pouring rain. “I’ve never seen him before and I know that when he sings, he’ll be singing about religion,” the 44-year-old said of Irama’s Islam-inspired tunes.

For fan Jhon Kenedi, the King of Dangdut might have taken the country’s top job if he had a decided to throw his hat in the ring against Jokowi and Subianto.

“I’d choose him if he ran” for president, the 46-year-old taxi driver told AFP. - ‘Drill Dance’ -

Irama’s dangdut style isn’t the only one offer, though. Another version involving erotic dance and female performers in skimpy clothing is hugely popular, despite opposition from some conservative Muslims.

Dangdut star Inul Daratista

made a career out of her signature “drill dance” in which moved her hips in a rapid circular motion like a drill -- sparking a string of copycats.

The throbbing style grabbed international headlines a few years ago when a female Dangdut singer died after being bitten by a cobra used in her boundary-busting act.

At a Jokowi rally in Soreang on Java island this week, throngs of mostly male fans did not appear to be thinking much about politics as they cheered on a voluptuous dangdut singer in skin-tight white pants.

And even Indonesian rock legends Slank, who are supporting the president’s re-election bid, incorporated some dangdut elements into a video made for Jokowi’s campaign.

“Music is just part of the lifestyle” here, said Bens Leo, an Indonesian music journalist. “And you can bet that a big majority of a band’s loyal fans will vote for the candidate that their favourite stars pick.”(afp)

Slumping tennis player Tara Moore pulls off miraculous comeback.

Serving to avoid a “double-bagel” humiliation against French third seed Jessika Ponchet , Moore fell 30-40 behind on her own serve in the first round of the ITF World Tennis Tour event in Sunderland on Tuesday.

But the luck of the 479th-ranked player began to change when her overhead smash clipped the net and bounced on the line.

Moore, 26, pulled herself back into the match, winning the second-set tie-break and went on to complete a 0-6, 7-6 (9/7), 6-3 victory over the player ranked nearly 300 places above her.

After the result Moore tweeted that the result was “never in doubt” in response to a video clip of her lucky net cord winner.

“Thank you everyone for the kind messages the support has been overwhelming,” she said in another tweet.

“Hope I can just inspire all the young boys and girls (and adults) to never give up and keep on fighting #neverindoubt.”

Detroit rout Knicks to claim last playoff ticket NEW YORK - The Detroit Pistons clinched the final ticket to the NBA playoffs Wednesday, sealing their first postseason berth since 2016 with a 115-89 defeat of the New York Knicks.

With Eastern Conference rivals the Charlotte Hornets losing to the Orlando Magic elsewhere in Wednesday’s final round of regular season games, the Pistons would have advanced regardless of their result against the Knicks.

But the result against the team with the worst record in the NBA this season was never in doubt as Detroit moved into the lead before pulling away for a comfortable win.

Luke Kennard scored 27 points off the bench for Detroit, while starters Andre Drummond and Reggie Jackson delivered 20-point displays to lead the Pistons into the postseason.

Drummond finished with 20 points and 18 rebounds while Jackson had 21 points and seven assists.

Detroit’s reward for claiming the eighth and final seed in the Eastern Conference is a first round playoff duel with the Milwaukee Bucks.

Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri hailed star striker Cristiano Ronaldo as being in a class of his own after he bagged a precious away goal in their 1-1 Champions League quarter-final draw at Ajax on Wednesday.

Serving to avoid a “double-bagel” humiliation against French third seed Jessika Ponchet , Moore fell 30-40 behind on her own serve in the first round of the ITF World Tennis Tour event in Sunderland on Tuesday.

But the luck of the 479th-ranked player began to change when her overhead smash clipped the net and bounced on the line.

Moore, 26, pulled herself back into the match, winning the second-set tie-break and went on to complete a 0-6, 7-6 (9/7), 6-3 victory over the player ranked nearly 300 places above her.

After the result Moore tweeted that the result was “never in doubt” in response to a video clip of her lucky net cord winner.

Detroit rout Knicks to claim last playoff ticket NEW YORK - The Detroit Pistons clinched the final ticket to the NBA playoffs Wednesday, sealing their first postseason berth since 2016 with a 115-89 defeat of the New York Knicks.

With Eastern Conference rivals the Charlotte Hornets losing to the Orlando Magic elsewhere in Wednesday’s final round of regular season games, the Pistons would have advanced regardless of their result against the Knicks.

But the result against the team with the worst record in the NBA this season was never in doubt as Detroit moved into the lead before pulling away for a comfortable win.

Luke Kennard scored 27 points off the bench for Detroit, while starters Andre Drummond and Reggie Jackson delivered 20-point displays to lead the Pistons into the postseason.

Sudanese call ‘regime has fallen’ as army announcement awaited

KHARTOUM - Sudanese crowds demanding the ouster of President Omar al-Bashir flooded to the army headquarters on Thursday chanting “the regime has fallen,” as they awaited an “important announcement” from the military.

Sources and witnesses told AFP that soldiers had raided both the state television and the offices of a group linked to Bashir’s ruling party.

Thousands of Khartoum residents were filling the area around army headquarters where protesters have held an unprecedented sit-in now in its sixth day.

“The Sudanese army will issue an important statement soon. Wait for it,” the state television anchor said, without giving further details.

Army vehicles carrying troops were seen deploying in the centre of Khartoum.

As martial music replaced normal programming, a source working at state television told AFP that at about 5:00 am (0300 GMT) a group of army officers came to the building.

They ordered technicians to broadcast only that the army would be making an important announcement soon.

Soldiers also raided the offices of the Islamic Movement, the ideological wing of the Bashir’s ruling National Congress Party, witnesses told AFP. - ‘Regime must go’ -

The protests, which erupted in December over the government’s

tripling of the price of bread, have become the biggest challenge yet to Bashir’s three decades of ironfisted rule.

“We are waiting for big news,” one protester told AFP from the sit-in.

“We won’t leave from here until we know what it is. But we do know that Bashir has to go.

“We had enough of this regime -- 30 years of repression, corruption, rights abuses, it’s enough.”

Demonstrators have spent five nights defiantly camped outside the sprawling headquarters complex, which also houses Bashir’s official residence and the defence ministry.

There has been an often festive mood at the sit-in, with protesters singing and dancing to the tunes of revolutionary songs.

The group spearheading the nationwide demonstrations urged residents of the capital to join the sit-in and thousands heeded it call.

“We call on our people from across the Khartoum capital and the region around to immediately go to the sit-in area and not leave from there until our next statement is issued,” the Sudanese Professionals Association said.

- Death toll mounts -

The wider alliance the SPA

has formed with opposition parties and some rebel groups from Sudan’s war-torn regions said the sit-in would continue until Bashir steps down and makes way for sweeping reforms.

“We have to continue to gather at the sit-in area until the conditions of our revolution as agreed by our alliance have been met,” the Alliance for Freedom and Change said.

The demonstrators have braved repeated volleys of tear gas from members of the powerful National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS) since they began camping outside the complex on Saturday, protest organisers say.

But for the first time on Tuesday night they did not face any “threat” from security agents, said a protester who requested anonymity for security reasons.

That came after 11 people, including six members of the security forces, were killed on Tuesday during demonstrations in the capital, government spokesman Hassan Ismail told the official SUNA news agency.

Officials say 49 people have died in protest-related violence since demonstrations first erupted in December. (afp)

US warship cruises disputed sea in Philippine war games MANILA - A US warship laden with hi-tech fighter planes took centre stage at key war games in the Philippines Thursday, brandishing military might as fresh tensions bubble in the contentious South China Sea. The amphibious assault ship USS Wasp, with at least 10 F-35B stealth jets on deck, stood guard as amphibious tanks rolled onto a Philippine beach located a short sail from islands also claimed by China.

The vessel was in the area for long-running US-Philippine military drills, which come as Manila pushes back against the recent presence of hundreds of Chinese ships near its Pag-asa (Thitu) island.

“We can’t disclose the official movements of the USS Wasp for security reasons, but they have been operating in the South China Sea region... as part of the exercise,” US spokeswoman Second Lieutenant Tori Sharpe told reporters.

President Rodrigo Duterte had largely set aside the once-tense dispute over China’s expansive claims to the resource-rich waterway, but told Beijing last week to back off over the “swarming” Chinese boats.

The Philippines called the boats’ presence “illegal” and Duterte threatened China with possible military action if it touches the island.

China claims most of the sea, including waters and islands close to the shores of its neighbours. It has built artificial islands and military installations that the US warned could curtail right of passage by non-Chinese vessels.

The Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia, Taiwan and Vietnam have also all staked claims to various islands and reefs in the sea that is thought to have rich petroleum reserves deep beneath its waters. The Wasp’s participation in the exercises represents “an increase in military capability committed to a free and open Indo-Pacific region,” the US navy said in a press release on its arrival last week.

The two-week Balikatan (Shoulder-to-shoulder) exercises, which opened April 1, include some 4,000 Philippine, 3,500 American, and 50 Australian troops. Duterte had threatened to quit the drills as part of his pivot away from former colonial master the US and toward China, but they have carried on after being toned down for a few years.

As Duterte has adopted a friendlier stance with China, the US has moved to shore up its ties with Manila and assert its presence in the South China Sea. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo pledged in March to come to the Philippines’ defence in case of an “armed attack” in the sea, a clear assurance Philippines leaders had long sought.

Duterte has been criticised at home as being too eager to grow ties with Beijing, and giving up too much leverage on the South China Sea issue.

Music for the masses winning Indonesian voter’s hearts

From Indonesia’s hip-swivelling juggernaut dangdut to thumping rock bands and Islaminfused tunes, music could be the clincher for winning hearts -- and votes -- as the world’s third-biggest democracy heads to the polls next week.

Political platforms aside, candidates know it is entertainment that draws the crowds to campaign rallies in music-mad Indonesia.

Just ask millennial voter Muhammad Ariel, who went to a concert where popular rock band Radja performed in support of president Joko Widodo, better known as Jokowi.

Screaming “where are Jokowi’s fans”, Radja’s energetic show and thumbs-up for Indonesia’s heavymetal music loving leader resonates with young voters like Ariel, who make up almost one third of the electorate.

Jokowi’s camp has said that winning over millennial and first time voters was crucial.

“I’m a Radja fan because their songs are great, but it’s also because we’re going to vote for the same candidate,” Ariel said from the rally near the capital Jakarta.

More than 190 million people are set to cast a ballot for thousands of candidates, from the president down to local legislators, in the Southeast Asian nation’s biggestever election on April 17.

Music is essential in this nation of 260 million, where song-anddance is a staple of television shows, sporting events, presidential debates and even the central bank’s recent economic review. And it’s a must-do at election time.

“Music is meant to capture the interest of people on the lower rungs of society,” said Hamdi Muluk, a University of Indonesia psychology professor who has a speciality in politics and voter behaviour.

- ‘Part of the lifestyle’ -

Jokowi’s rival Prabowo Subianto is banking on capturing the

attention of conservative voters in the world’s biggest Muslim majority nation with concerts featuring Islam-inspired gambus music.

The retired general’s musical arsenal also includes Rhoma Irama, a geriatric-looking version of Elvis Presley who is famed as the King of Dangdut.

The hugely popular style -which runs the gamut from religion-inspired lyrics to a raunchier version involving sensual dance moves similar to twerking -- takes its cue from Hindustani and Arabic music.

Dangdut is infused with a hypnotic percussion beat backed by a multi-instrument band.

Every Indonesian knows it, there are television channels dedicated to it, and dangdut is performed everywhere from the smallest villages to bustling Jakarta -- and the beat ramps up during election time.

The promise of a legendary crooner like Irama, clad in a white jumpsuit, is what got housewife Alima Kholil out to a huge rally for Subianto in vote-rich West Java, despite pouring rain. “I’ve never seen him before and I know that when he sings, he’ll be singing about religion,” the 44-year-old said of Irama’s Islam-inspired tunes.

For fan Jhon Kenedi, the King of Dangdut might have taken the country’s top job if he had a decided to throw his hat in the ring against Jokowi and Subianto.

“I’d choose him if he ran” for president, the 46-year-old taxi driver told AFP. - ‘Drill Dance’ -

Irama’s dangdut style isn’t the only one offer, though. Another version involving erotic dance and female performers in skimpy clothing is hugely popular, despite opposition from some conservative Muslims.

made a career out of her signature “drill dance” in which moved her hips in a rapid circular motion like a drill -- sparking a string of copycats.

The throbbing style grabbed international headlines a few years ago when a female Dangdut singer died after being bitten by a cobra used in her boundary-busting act.

At a Jokowi rally in Soreang on Java island this week, throngs of mostly male fans did not appear to be thinking much about politics as they cheered on a voluptuous dangdut singer in skin-tight white pants.

And even Indonesian rock legends Slank, who are supporting the president’s re-election bid, incorporated some dangdut elements into a video made for Jokowi’s campaign.

“Music is just part of the lifestyle” here, said Bens Leo, an Indonesian music journalist. “And you can bet that a big majority of a band’s loyal fans will vote for the candidate that their favourite stars pick.”(afp)

German govt buys new planes after embarrassing technical faults

The German government has purchased three new Airbus 350 long-haul planes for official trips after a series of embarrassing technical failures with its current fleet, including one which grounded Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Berlin will pay 1.2 billion euros ($1.3 billion) for the three A350s, the first to be delivered in 2020 and the remaining two in 2022, the ministry said Wednesday.

“The brand new planes will boost the flight readiness of the defence ministry’s long-haul capacities,” it said. Once are delivered, the A340300s currently in service would be phased out, it added.

Among the embarrassing technical failures that hit the government service fleet in the last months was one in November affecting Merkel.

The chancellor missed the beginning of a G20 summit in Buenos Aires as the plane carrying her from Berlin encountered electrical problems and was forced to land in Cologne.

The “Konrad Adenauer” Airbus was given a complete overhaul following the incident but on its first outing since on April 1, it blew a tyre on landing in New York with Foreign Minister Heiko Maas on board.

The plane eventually had to be towed to its parking space, but the delay meant that Maas missed his first appointments at the UN. In March, the foreign minister was stranded in Mali due to a hydraulic problem with his Airbus A319’s landing gear. The plane woes have also hit other top German officials.

At the end of January, President Frank-Walter Steinmeier was stuck in Ethiopia for similar reasons while Development Minister Gerd Mueller had to cancel a trip to Namibia at the start of the year owing to problems with his plane.

With the Konrad Adenauer back in the repair workshop, Finance Minister Olaf Scholz had to fly on a smaller plane, the A321, which required mid-route refuelling in Iceland to complete its journey to the United States. (afp)

IMF forecast: Global growth will weaken this year to 3.3%

WASHINGTON - The International Monetary Fund on Tuesday downgraded its outlook for growth in the United States, Europe, Japan and the overall global economy and pointed to heightened trade tensions as a key reason.

The IMF expects the world economy to grow 3.3% this year, down from 3.6% in 2018. That would match 2016 for the weakest year since 2009. In its previous forecast in January, the IMF had predicted that international growth would reach 3.5% this year.

For the United States, IMF economists downgraded their growth forecast for this year to 2.3% from 2.9% in 2018.

The gloomier picture in the IMF’s latest World Economic Outlook contributed to a selloff in stocks, with investors concerned that slower global growth could weaken corporate earnings. It comes on the eve of meetings in Washington this week of the IMF and its sister lending organization, the World Bank. Those meetings are likely to be dominated by discussions of how to combat growing risks to international growth.

“This is a delicate moment for the global

economy,” Gita Gopinath, the IMF’s chief economist, said at a news conference, while cautioning that the fund does not foresee an international recession.

Gopinath said it was “imperative that costly policy mistakes are avoided.” In particular, she highlighted the need for the world’s two biggest economies, the United States and China, to find a way to resolve their trade war, which has intensified global economic uncertainty.

If trade tensions worsen, Gopinath warned that it could trigger “large disruptions in global supply chains.”

In Europe, the IMF expects the 19 countries that use the euro currency to expand 1.3% collectively in 2019, weaker than last year’s 1.8% growth or in any year since 2013.

Japan is expected to eke out 1% growth this year, up from 0.8% in 2018 but slightly down

from the fund’s earlier forecast.

The IMF foresees the Chinese economy growing 6.3% this year, down from 6.6% in 2018. But the fund’s latest 2019 outlook was a slight upgrade from the 6.2% growth it had forecast for China in January.

China’s prospects brightened, the fund said, after President Donald Trump decided to suspend a planned increase in tariffs on $200 billion worth of U.S.-bound Chinese exports.

Still, the fund is expressing worries about tensions between the world’s two biggest economies, which have traded tariffs on hundreds of billions of dollars’ worth of products in a fight over China’s aggressive push to supplant American technological supremacy.

The prospect of Britain’s messy departure from the European Union also weighs on the global economy.

The IMF expects growth in world trade to drop to 3.4% this year — a sharp slowdown from the 4% it had expected in January and from 3.8% trade growth in 2018. (ap)

Sukanada further explained, that the village potential is strong and runs as expected, then it will be proposed to become a tourism village.

The sliced ??stems are then soaked in the salt water for about 30 minutes. After that, squeeze them repeatedly with the aim to make the stem soft and release the entire sap and mucus.

Meanwhile, the seasoning uses Balinese spices such as turmeric, ginger, galangal, lemongrass and shallot.

All of these spices are only pushed to produce a clearer soup. The seasoning is then stir-fried and added chicken stock. The taro stem is put into a pan and add some salt and pepper. Ultimately, cook for about 30 minutes.

In Thailand’s former capital Ayutthaya, a tourist hotspot famed for its ancient temple ruins, more than a dozen elephants walked along the streets with their handlers on their backs, splashing and spraying water at locals and foreigners under a blistering sun.

The soaking by the pachyderms kicks off a weekend of festivities for Songkran, the traditional Buddhist new year celebration which officially begins on April 13.

Revellers “can come to pay respects to Buddha and offer alms to monks in the morning and in the afternoon play water with the elephants,” said Laithongren Meepan, owner of the Ayutthaya Elephant Camp. “(Using their trunks to spray water) is the elephants’ natural way of playing,” he added.

Traditionally marked by paying respects to elders and sprinkling water over Buddha figures at local temples, the Songkran holiday has largely evolved into a raucous water fight.

Locals and foreigners armed with water guns and protective googles engage in soggy street parties, bringing much of the country to a standstill.

“In other provinces, they have foam parties. But in Ayutthaya, you can celebrate Songkran with the elephants,” Laithongren told AFP. Their handlers, known as mahouts, have trained the giant mammals to do tricks like lifting their front foot in greeting or gyrating their bodies to music as if they were dancing -- much to the delight of revellers.

SINGAPORE - A 40-metre indoor waterfall cascading through a steel and glass dome is at the heart of a vast complex in Singapore’s main airport unveiled Thursday, part of the city-state’s fight for global flights.

Reportedly built for a cool Sg$1.7 billion ($1.25 billion), the “Jewel” centre has gardens growing over four storeys, as well as 280 retail and food outlets, a hotel and cinema. It links to three of the airport’s terminals.

But analysts were sceptical the 135,700 square metre (1.4 million square feet) complex would be a hit

with transiting passengers -- immigration has to be cleared to reach it and Changi airport already has high standard facilities.

As well as an attraction for visitors to Singapore, it is also billed as a destination in its own right for local residents. Jewel started welcoming a limited number of visitors this week, and will open fully to the public next Wednesday.

It is part of efforts by Changi -the world’s seventh busiest airport for international traffic -- to attract long-haul travellers over other hubs such as Hong Kong and Dubai.

“Passengers are spending a

longer time as they transit through airports, which is the reason why there is a need for us to increase the amenities,” said Jayson Goh, a senior executive at Changi Airport Group.

But Brendan Sobie, chief analyst at the Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation, said that Jewel would “primarily be used by local residents and some departing passengers”.

“Attracting transit passengers is not realistic as they would need to clear immigration and there are so many great facilities (inside the airport) already that makes Changi a top transit airport,” he said. (afp)

Hungarian Roma designer fights stereotypes with fashion BUDAPEST - Hungarian Roma fashion designer Erika Varga says her label is about stitching together cultural traditions and snipping through stereotypes as much as it’s about dressmaking.

“Fashion is a branch of art that interests and connects people, nonRoma and Roma,” the founder of Romani Design said.

Often blamed for petty crime, the Roma, Hungary’s largest ethnic minority, face widespread discrimination, poverty and exclusion from mainstream society.

“In most cases, Roma appear in a pejorative way in the media.

“Many turn away from their own culture... But people need positive role models, not just the majority in society but also Roma people themselves,” the 47-yearold designer said.

Founded in 2010 by Varga to promote Roma fashion and identity, her Romani Design studio brought out its first collection the same year.

Now, her evening dresses can sell for up to 1,000 euros ($1,100).

“As a Roma-run social enterprise, it’s unique in the world,” Varga told AFP, ahead of International Roma Day on Monday.

“We don’t make mass-produced T-shirts but clothes that carry messages, like on minority rights and integration,” she added.

- ‘Rebel Spirit’ -

Varga’s latest range, called Rebel Spirit, is inspired by strong female figures, including her mother, late grandmother and 20th century Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, a hero of hers.

The small, long-haired designer said she asked “nonconforming women who have overcome challenges in their lives” to model the range.

“It’s important to express openness in what you wear,” said one of the models, Adel Onodi, 23, who became the first transgender woman to appear on the front cover of a Hungarian fashion magazine last year.

After leaving school in eastern Hungary, Varga soon set up her own jewellery-making business before branching out into fashion design.

Now, she employs five staff, including her folk-singer sister, who design and make the frocks at Varga’s home studio on the outskirts of Budapest where she lives with her husband and two dogs.

Varga says that she is not put off running a business by conventional attitudes in the Roma community on women’s role in society.

“My own mother all her life was involved in trading clothes, so for me it’s completely normal to be both Roma and a businesswoman,” she said.

Traditional Roma motifs like flowers are a typical feature of her designs, particularly one of her favourites, the

rose -- a symbol of femininity -- which adorns even the slippers she wears while pedalling her sewing machine.

Most of her skirts and dresses are long, in line with Roma tradition.

Daring combinations of bright colours –- “brought by the Roma over the centuries from India and Asia,” she says -- also characterise her outfits.

Rozina Patkai, a Hungarian singer who wears Varga’s clothes during her performances, says they often attract compliments.

“The main thing is that I feel confident in these clothes,” she tells AFP.

Underground cable project of PLN deploys special officers MANGUPURA — Underground cable excavation project with drill technique at Ungasan, Jimbaran, and Kedonganan, South Kuta, have caused congestion in several places, especially in places where the drilling machine is operated. It has been anticipated by the project contractor by deploying officers to regulate traffic.

Public Relations Officer of PT Prismian Cables & System, the contractor working on this project, in a press release on Wednesday (Apr. 10) stated the drill works and the placement between one machine and another is around 100 meters to 200 meters. PT Prismian Cables & System, as the project executor in the field, has also coordinated with Denpasar Metro National Road Authority (PJN) for the national roads. Meanwhile, in Badung district area this project passes three road segments namely the road around Bali Cliff Hotel at Pecatu, Jalan Raya Jimbaran and Jalan Segara Madu at Kelan village, Tuban. This project ends at Ngurah Rai Airport, Tuban, Kuta.

The progress of the underground cable project has gone in accordance with the plan. Specifically for the underground transmission workmanship in the Jimbaran area indeed received extra attention from the project contractor. This happens because the main road leads to the beach tourism area as well as hotels in the vicinity.

She says that many in the local rag trade dismiss the firm as a “gypsy brand”, even though, for centuries, Hungarian and Roma clothing traditions and motifs have overlapped.

Most of its buyers are “sociallyconscious”, middle-class, non-Roma, who buy online, she says, or foreigners at the three or four trade fairs abroad attended by the studio every year.

After her clothes appeared at a glitzy fashion show in Budapest last week, Hungarian TV celebrity stylist Mark Lakatos enthused about the designs.

TABANAN - A girl of about 10 years old was found neglected in the area of Kaba-Kaba village, Kediri sub-district, on Wednesday (Apr. 10) at around 03:00.

After the examination at the Tabanan Hospital, the child was picked up by the officers from the Tabanan Social Service and then taken to a social protection house at Wanasara, Bongan village, Tabanan.

Head of the Tabanan Social Service, I Nyoman Gde Gunawan, stated that when taken to the Social Service the neglected and unidentified child had fled. Luckily, she was immediately secured again by local security officers. Moreover, when the Social Service officers wanted to get information related to her name, family and place of origin, she did not respond.

The girl just kept silent. “So, we have tried to find information related to her name, parent and address, but she did not want to talk, even her speech is not clear,” said Gunawan.

To facilitate communication, Social Service officers have also tried in various ways, one of which was by offering stationery, hoping she will write her name. “She only mentioned the name

First quarter, aircraft movement at Ngurah Rai Airport declines MANGUPURA — The number of aircraft movement at Ngurah Rai Airport during the first quarter of 2019 decreased slightly by 36,519 aircrafts, or down 3.3 percent when compared to the record during the period of 2018. The number of movement in the same period in 2018 reached 37,763 movements.

“Just like the records during the period of January to February 2019,

the aircraft movement during the period January-March 2019 also declined, namely 1,244 movements or 3.3 percent,” said General Manager of PT Angkasa Pura I (Persero) Branch Office for Ngurah Rai International Airport, Haruman Sulaksono, on Wednesday (Apr. 10).

Haruman explained that during the first quarter of 2019, there were 19,012 movements from domestic

routes, with details of 9,505 aircraft coming to Bali, 9,469 aircrafts leaving Bali as well as 38 transfer aircraft movements. During the same period in 2018, the number of movement of domestic aircraft was recorded at 20,958 movements with 10,402 aircrafts coming to the Island of the Gods, 10,424 departing aircrafts, and 132 transfer aircrafts. “If making comparison of aircraft movements

The Bali Cleanup Movement targeting plastic waste held simultaneously on Sunday (Apr. 7) managed to collect 692 kilograms of plastic waste in Tabanan. Other than plastic waste that can be weighed, the activities could also collect 927 sacks of plastic waste. After that, the waste was transported

Head of the Tabanan Environment Agency, Made Subagia, said on Wednesday (Apr. 10) that Bali Plastic Waste Cleanup Movement was carried out at 26 points. “The collected garbage is then distributed directly to collectors, while the rest to waste bank or TPS3R and some was transported by the Environment Agency to Mandung Landfill,” he said.

He added the garbage delivered to the Mandung landfill consist of dirty plastic waste and is not acceptable to collectors or waste banks. Nevertheless, later the plastic waste will still be sorted by officers at the Mandung Landfill so that the amount of residue

US actress Lori Loughlin faces new charge in college bribery scandal NEW YORK - American actress Lori Loughlin was hit with a second charge on Tuesday stemming from a college admissions bribery scandal, increasing the likelihood that she could serve time in prison.

The actress, known for her role on “Full House,” now faces the charge of conspiracy to commit money laundering in addition to conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud, federal prosecutor Andrew Lelling said.

The second charge is punishable by up to 20 years in jail, bringing the total prison time she now potentially faces to 40 years.

Unlike actress Felicity Huffman, who was also among 33 parents charged in the case, Loughlin has so far chosen not to plead guilty -- a move that, in addition to avoiding trial, usually results in a reduced sentence.

In Huffman’s case, the prosecutor’s office on Monday recommended a sentence corresponding to the bottom end of the possible range, which provides for a minimum of four months in prison.

The sentencing judge is not however required to follow this recommendation.

Even if Loughlin decided to plead guilty later, the recommended sentence would probably be significantly higher due to the second charge as well as the amount of money involved.

Huffman pleaded guilty to paying $15,000 to help her eldest daughter get better scores on the SAT college entrance exam, while Loughlin and her husband are accused of paying $500,000 so that their two daughters could gain entrance into the University of Southern California.

The ringleader behind the scam, William “Rick” Singer, who authorities say was paid about $25 million dollars to bribe coaches and university administrators, has pleaded guilty and is cooperating with authorities. According to prosecutors, the accused parents paid a firm run by Singer to cheat on college entrance exams for their children or to bribe coaches to help non-athletic students get sports scholarships. NEW YORK - Cuban-American singer Camila Cabello will try on the glass slipper when she takes on the lead role in a remake of “Cinderella,” a source close to the project said Tuesday.

The decision to cast a Hispanic woman is a significant break from a long tradition of white and usually blonde Cinderellas.

Cabello, a multi-platinum selling and Grammy-nominated singer/ songwriter, will also help write the film’s songs.

The project grew out of an original idea from late-night television host James Corden, the source told AFP. The remake was first reported by the entertainment magazine The Hollywood Reporter.

Corden -- best known for “The Late Late Show” and his “Carpool Karaoke” series -- will co-produce the film through the company Fulwell 73, of which he is a partner.

At the helm will be director Kay Cannon, who is no stranger to breaking the Hollywood mold with femaledriven narratives. Cannon wrote the box office hit “Pitch Perfect” franchise, which tells the story of female friendships through a humorous take on competitive college a capella.

She made her directorial debut in 2018 with the critically acclaimed comedy “Blockers,” which flipped the typically male-oriented teen coming-of-age script and grossed over $93 million worldwide.

The iconic princess role is the latest chapter in Cabello’s own Cinderella story: she gained recognition at age 16 as part of the girl group Fifth Harmony.

She left the group in 2016 to pursue a solo career and became a global household name in August the following year when her hit song “Havana” soared to the top of the pop radio chart. Cabello released her self-titled album in January 2018, which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart.

Now 22, Cabello is the latest actress to take on the role of Cinderella. The film, which will be made

by Sony affiliate Columbia, is on the fast track for production.

Migrant CARE denounces hoax circulating on preliminary election abroad

JAKARTA - Migrant Care, a non-governmental organization advocating for immigrant Indonesians working abroad, denounced a hoax spread on Indonesia’s overseas election ballots’ result and put its support behind the General Election Commission to comprehensively investigate the perpetrators.

“This hoax was possibly circulated to further complicate matters concerning the preliminary elections overseas on Apr 8-14, as a means of turning up the heat ahead of the simultaneous elections here on April 17, 2019,” Migrant CARE Executive Director Wahyu Susilo noted in a press statement received here on Wednesday.

Susilo has gauged that irresponsible parties had spread the hoax aimed at delegitimizing the credibility of election organizers.

Hence, Migrant CARE had lent full support to the General Election

Commission to take this case to the realm of law.

Susilo called for special focus to be laid on the preliminary election for Indonesians residing abroad. With three diverse vote-casting methods through polling stations, mobile dropbox, and post mail, a special monitoring mechanism is necessary to ascertain adherence to the election’s principles of fairness, direct, general, free, and confidential.

Migrant CARE has observed that during the election period from 2004 to 2019, no monitoring mechanism was in place to enable

election supervisors to ascertain the safety of the shipped mobile dropbox. Hence, Migrant CARE, as the official observer of the Indonesian elections abroad, has called on the General Election Supervisory Body to facilitate access to surveillance and monitoring the delivery of ballots from the mobile dropbox and post mail.

Moreover, Migrant CARE will send Indonesian election observers to nations, including Malaysia, Singapore, and Hong Kong, having a long list of permanent voters in the preliminary election.

Foreigner Indonesia’s Foreign Ministry has made assurance that the Overseas Election Committee (PPLN) will conduct the counting of votes of Indonesians taking part in the 2019 Parliamentary and Presidential Elections scheduled on Apr 17.

This statement was made by Lalu Muhammad Iqbal, the ministry’s Director for the Protection of Indonesian Nationals and Entities Abroad, in his brief message made available to journalists in Jakyarta, Wednesday.

“Different vote-casting methods are applied and the time zones of Indonesia and overseas nations and territories differ,” he stated, adding that the methods followed

overseas encompasses votes being cast at polling booths, sent via mail, and then placed in mobile voting boxes.

The use of mobile ballot boxes will come into effect between April 8 and April 14, 2019, while the PPLN will oversee the vote-casting process at ballot booths on Apr 8-14 based on the condition of the respective countries, he remarked.
