But while the official top spot was retained by Lewis Capaldi and Someone You Loved, three of the band’s albums returned to the official album chart.

Reeling from the news, Siti Aisyah’s aunt geared up for a party to welcome back her 27-year-old niece, a year and a half after she went on trial in neighbouring Malaysia with the death penalty hanging over her head.

“Thank God. I want to say a thousand ‘thank you’s’ if it’s really true that she has been freed,” Aisyah’s aunt Darmi, who goes by one name, told AFP. “They should bring her here straight away because she’s not guilty. We’ve heard the news and we’re so happy. We’re getting a celebration ready!

“Thanks to everyone who took care of my niece.”

Aisyah’s parents were in the capital Jakarta Monday to await their daughter’s return, after a flurry of diplomatic efforts between the two Southeast Asian neighbours.

In Kuala Lumpur, Aisyah smiled as she was ushered through a pack of journalists and into a car outside the court, where she had been on trial alongside a Vietnamese woman for the murder of Kim Jong Nam at Kuala Lumpur airport in February 2017.

The pair had always denied murder, saying they were tricked by North Korean spies into carrying out the Cold War-style hit using VX nerve agent and believed it was a prank for a reality TV show.

The judge unexpectedly agreed to a request at Monday’s hearing to withdraw the murder charge and release Aisyah, although it did not amount to a full acquittal.

Back in Sindangsari, about 100 kilometres (62 miles) west of Jakarta, the family’s neighbour Darsinah recalls watching Aisyah grow up as an “innocent and naive” little girl.

“Never made a fuss. Very obedient and polite,” said the woman, who like many Indonesians goes by one name. “I’m happy, so very happy.” Aisyah herself struggled to imagine that she was going home -- and had escaped a murder conviction that could have led to her hanging execution.

“I had already surrendered myself to God,” she told Indonesia’s Kompas TV in an interview from the Malaysian capital. “It was the support of my family -- my mother, my father -- and the embassy, that kept me going. Now I want to see them.”

Asked if she would ever return to Malaysia, the woman replied: “Who knows -- but I don’t want to be here right now ... I want to stay in Indonesia.” (afp)

Lopez and Rodriguez confirmed on Instagram late Saturday that they are engaged.

Both posted a picture of their hands at sunset, with Lopez’s enormous diamond ring.

While the multi-hyphenate singer-actress-dancer-producer only captioned the pic with heart emojis, Rodriguez went a bit farther, writing in lower-case letters: “she said yes.”

Lopez, 49, and Rodriguez, 43, have been a couple for about two years.

Lopez, currently the executive producer and judge on NBC reality dance competition show “World of Dance,” is set to go on tour later this year across North America. She wrapped up a Vegas residency in 2018.

She has been married three times: to Ojani Noa, back-up dancer Cris Judd, and singer Marc Anthony, with whom she has 11-year-old twins.

She also had a high-profile relationship with actor Ben Affleck.

Rodriguez retired from Major League Baseball in 2016, after a lengthy career, mostly with the New York Yankees. He won one World Series title with the Yankees and was an All-Star 14 times.

His achievements were tarnished by his admission that he used performance-enhancing drugs.

He was suspended for the entire 2014 season.

Rodriguez currently works as an on-air baseball analyst. He has been married once. He and ex-wife Cynthia Scurtis have two daughters. Price increases significantly, bartender switches to local alcohol

DENPASAR - The price of alcoholic beverages rose significantly by 50 percent – 100 percent in 2018. Actually nearly most or about 60 percent of beverage products made at hotels or bars use alcohol. This price increase makes bartenders, especially in tourism circles, switch to using local alcoholic beverages.

“Nearly more than 60 percent of average sales of drinks at every hotel, bar and restaurant are using alcohol,” said Ketut Darmayasa, Founder and Initiator of Balabec (Bali Local Alcoholic Beverage Control) on Sunday (Mar. 10).

Almost all hotels, restaurants and bars need alcohol to mix their drinks and food. Meanwhile, there are difficulties in getting alcohol following the increase in the basic price of all types of imported alcoholic beverages. They are indeed included in the Negative Invest-

ment List (DNI).

“Once a few years ago, Bali had difficulty in the supply of alcoholic drink, especially imported alcoholic drink because one of the companies importing the alcohol experienced quota reduction,” he said.

Indeed, not all food and drinks at hotels and restaurants use alcohol like fruit juice, mocktail, soft drinks but use the types of cocktails, beer, spirit straight and carbonized spirit. The increase in the price of alcoholic bever-

ages is alleged to because the imquota is reduced to increase export competitiveness.

Indeed, most alcoholic drinks are imported, especially whiskey and wine.

“Alcoholic drink is very important because it is a necessity for tourists. In Europe, beer is like mineral water, while Russian tourists are used to drinking vodka.

The need for alcoholic drink is very large for bars, restaurants and discotheques. “If you go to bars or discos without alcoholic drink, it’s like vegetables without salt,” he explained.

Since 1990, wine of local brands has appeared in numbers. However, before the emergence of local branded wine, to meet the needs of wine is imported from France, Australia and the United States.

Bawaslu encounters 10 foreigners registered in DPT Recommended to cross out

TABANAN - The information regarding foreign citizens (WNA) included in the permanent voter list (DPT) for presidential and legislative elections due to their possession of electronic identity card or e-KTP receives direct attention from the Tabanan Electoral Supervisory Board (Bawaslu). As a result, Bawaslu Tabanan found ten foreigners included in the DPT. This finding is different from the data of the Tabanan Electoral Commission (KPU) recording only six foreigners. Bawaslu Tabanan will recommend crossing out the registered foreigners in the DPT.

Head of Bawaslu Tabanan, I Made Rumada, explained that after getting information regarding the presence of foreigners included in the DPT in West Java, his board in Tabanan immediately coordinated with the KPU. “We immediately checked and found ten foreigners having e-KTP and KITAP in Tabanan included in the DPT. We will recommend to the KPU to enter the unqualified voter list (TMS) and be delisted from the DPT,” said Rumada on Sunday (Mar. 10).

Accompanied by members of the Electoral Supervisory Board, I Ketut Narta, Rumada explained that

he continued to conduct DPT checks regarding the presence of foreigners in the DPT. Based on the data of KPU Tabanan, six foreigners were included in the DPT. Meanwhile, the Chairperson of KPU Tabanan, I Gede Putu Weda Subawa, when asked for his confirmation separately admitted the presence of data on the six foreigners included in the DPT. Human encroachment threatens chimpanzee culture

FROM deep inside chimpanzee territory, the fieldworkers heard loud bangs and shouts.

Hidden video cameras later revealed what the chimps in the Boé region of Guinea-Bissau were up to. Males were throwing rocks at trees and yelling.

Researchers don’t fully understand why the apes engage in this rare behavior, known as accumulative stone throwing. And scientists may not have much time to sort out what’s going on.

All four of Africa’s subspecies of chimpanzees are under threat from deforestation and poaching.

That and other human activity may also be affecting chimp behaviors, including ones that many primatologists view as evidence of chimp culture — behaviors that are learned socially and transmitted through generations, Ammie Kalan and colleagues report online

March 7 in Science. Such traditions as cave dwelling, using sticks to dig for honey and cracking nuts with stones are far less likely to occur in areas most impacted by humans, compared with more remote chimp territories, the team found.

“Everyone thinks that if populations are declining … there would be some loss in the transmission chain that leads to cultural diversity in animals,” says Kalan, of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany. “We’re the first to really show this.”

The group set out to test the disturbance hypothesis put forth

by Carel van Schaik, now of the University of Zurich, in 2002. That hypothesis suggests that disturbances, including population loss, resource depletion and habitat fragmentation, break down the opportunities needed for social learning to occur. By extension, cultural traditions will die out before the species itself. But van Schaik, an orangutan expert, lacked the data to prove his hypothesis.

panzee sites and, with the help of citizen scientists, sifted through millions of one-minute clips to identify thousands of chimp videos. The team also surveyed those chimp sites for feeding remains, signs of tool use and fecal samples to see what the animals were eating.

The researchers next combed through about 450 studies from 1951 to 2017 that documented chimpanzee behavior or culture.

The final analysis included 144 chimpanzee communities and 31 potentially cultural behaviors, such using moss as a sponge, using sticks to fish for algae and, of course, hurtling rocks at trees.

The team then sought to quantify the human impact on each chimp community with data from a collaborative project that uses satellite images to estimate the impact of infrastructure, human population density, forest cover and remoteness. With a resolution of 1 square kilometer and chimp communities typically spanning 25 to 100 square kilometers, those images provide a detailed snapshot of the chimps’ living situations.

That analysis revealed that the 31 chimpanzee behaviors were 88 percent less likely to occur in the areas more affected by human activities compared with the lowest.

Though the findings don’t directly prove that human activity caused a decrease in chimp behavioral diversity, the results support the disturbance hypothesis, says van Schaik, who was not involved in this study.

His own recent work suggests that such behaviors in orangutans appear vital to survival, with the

loss of key individuals leading to rapid losses in skills. “Culture is not the tip of the iceberg for these great apes — some kind of nice luxury — but an intrinsic and essential part of their local adaptation,” he explained in an e-mail.

Now, Kalan, who joined the Max Planck project in 2015, and her colleagues are urging conservationists to create preserves around chimpanzee communities that show unique behaviors. Such chimpanzee cultural heritage sites could protect the chimpanzees’ behavioral diversity, she says.

“Animal culture matters for conservation,” agrees Andrew Whiten, a primatologist at the University of St. Andrews in Fife, Scotland. He’s a coauthor of a study in the March 8 Science that looks at modes of cultural transmission across the animal kingdom — including among chimpanzees, whales, migratory birds and elephants — and the often dire consequences of breaking those knowledge chains.

To date, Kalan’s team has discovered only four chimpanzee communities in West Africa where stone throwing occurs. For now, she can only speculate about the chimps’ motivations. Maybe they’re trying to communicate with other group members through the loud “bang” of the stone against the tree or creating the chimpanzee equivalent of cairns on a hiking trail. Protecting the homes of these and other chimp groups could preserve such behaviors long enough for researchers to find the answers — and for the chimps to go on doing what they do. (net)

Tiny bits of iron may explain why some icebergs are green

WASHINGTO - Scientists may have finally figured out why some icebergs are green. Iron oxides could create the emerald hue.

Icebergs often appear mostly white because light bounces off air bubbles trapped inside the ice. But pure ice — ice without air bubbles that often forms on a berg’s underside — appears blue because it absorbs longer light wavelengths (warm colors like red and orange) and reflects shorter ones (the cooler colors).

Since the 1930s, though, mysterious capsized icebergs with green undersides, nicknamed “jade bergs,” have been spotted around Antarctica.

In the early 1990s, glaciologist Stephen Warren of the University

of Washington in Seattle and his colleagues proposed that the green came from microscopic carbon particles from dead organisms. When integrated into ice, these yellow carbon particles would absorb blue light leaving green to be reflected. Later experiments, though, found that the amount of carbon in green icebergs was too low to create the emerald hue.

“So we were left with this disturbing result,” Warren says.

Then in 2016, researchers discovered iron oxides in a decadesold preserved green ice sample taken from the Amery ice shelf in Antarctica. Iron oxides such as rust reflect reds and oranges but absorb blue light. If these particles, possi-

bly picked up from rocks crushed by the weight and friction of glaciers flowing toward the ocean, get incorporated into ice forming underwater, the result would be a vibrant green, Warren and his colleagues report online February 7 in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans.

Warren hopes to return to Antarctica to collect samples to see if jade bergs are rich in iron. If so, that could both solve a mystery and suggest a previously unknown role for this unusual ice: ferrying a scarce but essential nutrient to the microscopic plankton that the entire ocean food web relies on.

“I don’t know how important [green icebergs] are,” Warren says.

Maintaining heron population at Peh Landfill

PEH Landfill located at Kaliakah village, Negara subdistrict, for the past year has begun to change. Different scenery is seen not only in the landfill area, but also from the entry from DenpasarGilimanuk road section. On the way to the location, a smooth paved road of about 1.5 kilometers is passed with typical rural scenery.

At the surrounding, visitors are showcased with natural view of paddy fields and mountain, including animals commonly encountered in paddy fields such as white heron or storks. In fact, this heron habitat is also very useful for the landfill.

Piles of garbage previously looking like a hill seem to have shrunk since more than a year ago. The garbage used to soar was leveled after the expansion of the active zone. Even though the area has shrunk, the piles are still looming. The zone around the landfill also began to be arranged, so as not to look slum and muddy as ever before. Around the location, precisely along the entrance and the former compost factory has been deliberately greened with ornamental plants maintained by dozens of officers. Most of the landfill attendants are surrounding communities.

“Our task is to keep this active zone in order to stay well maintained. Unlike before, anyone can throw garbage here making it slum and muddy. Now, we are taking advantage of it, so that it becomes completely sorted,” said I Ketut Suardika, one of the landfill attendants.

In addition to garbage trucks carrying garbage from various regions in Jembrana every day, dozens of scavengers are allowed to do activities in the area. They are mostly local residents from around Kaliakah and Banyubiru village and they have a big contribution, especially in sorting the waste.

The landfill operator does not only provide the opportunity for scav-

engers to carry out their activities, but also health insurance from the government.

“All scavengers have health insurance. When having health problems, they can go directly to public health center,” added the man familiarly addressed as Dikok.

Reducing the negative impact of landfill is also one of the tasks of these officers. Every day, they regularly spray the active zones to reduce odors and flies arising from the impact of waste. However, since the landfill officers are on duty, they get some other helpers playing indirect roles namely the white herons.

Since the past two months, the bird population normally living in paddy fields has been increasing.

They are foraging in the rubbish piles. “They eat fly along with its larvae. For us, it is very helpful because it reduces the impact of flies,” added another officer. However, they are worried about the increasing number of these birds as well as many annoying ignorant hands.

Not infrequently, there are individuals making the heron a target for hunting by using air rifles. Actually, the birds are very helpful like what they have done at the largest landfill in Jembrana. “We protect them in this landfill area. But I don’t know when they are outside because this bird does not live here.

But every morning, these flocks of heron throng this location,” said Dikok.

As resident living around the Peh Landfill, he has also proposed to make a perarem or appendix to customary village bylaw for the protection of the bird species.

Therefore, their habitat is well maintained, even if possible increases. Along with other officers, Dikok also wished to plant large trees that later on can be used to make a nest by the herons. According to him, surely it takes time. But most importantly, today the landfill area must be maintained. (olo)

Maybe only 30 out of 1,000 icebergs have a green hue, earning them the nickname “jade bergs.” Now scientists may know why the ice has this unusual color.

KPDK installs village bylaw banner at airport location

SINGARAJA - A number of residents on behalf of the Kubutambahan Village Observer Community (KPDK) installed a banner on Teletubbies Hill planned to be the location of North Bali International Airport project on Sunday (Mar. 10). The banner installation is alleged to have relation to the utilization plan of the land owned by Kubutambahan customary village on Teletubbies Hill for the airport construction.

As seen in the field, the banner installed was about three times one meter in size. Location of the installation is not far from a stall building crowded with visitors to Teletubbies Hill. On the banner, there is a sign that reads “Awig (bylaw) of Kubutambahan Village in 1990. Article 5: Villagers consists of (1) Residents of Negak village; (2) Residents of Lattan village; and (3) Residents of Sampingan village. Article 23 reads: the Moor Land is the property of the customary village of Kubutambahan covering an area of 415,895 hectares; and Article 25 reads: It is not permitted to sell or ratify customary land, without prior consent from the customary villagers.”

Before installing it, representative of KPDK, Ketut Arcana Dangin, with Gede Kastawan explained at length about the action of installing the banner to the sub-district head of Kubutambahan, Made Suyasa, and chief of Kubutambahan Police, Made Mustida, and pecalang or customary security guard that were present at the airport location. As the head of government in Kubutambahan subdistrict, he is very interested in continuing to maintain conducive conditions.

Head of the KPDK, Ketut Arcana Dangin, stated the banner installation on Teletubbies Hill is meant to be known by the community component.

He ensured there is no personal interest in the installation of the banner, let alone considered be provocateur. On the contrary, the action is carried out because based on his observations so far only few people of Kubutambahan that know about the contents of the awig-awig passed in 1990. “We were established based on agreement with the name of KPDK. It is not intended to be a provocateur, but to monitor the conditions at Kubutambahan village.

We also propose a solution in accordance with the capabilities at hand to policy and interest holders,” he said.

Meanwhile, chief of Kubutambahan customary village, Ketut Warkadea, added the installation

of banners should be done more elegantly and at the right moment.

This happens because the discourse of central government on building the airport is nearing reality. For this reason, the action of installing banner, especially in the location being studied for the location of the airport project, if left unchecked, is worried to result in not good condition in the future.

Meanwhile, related to the content of awig-awig having not yet been known to the public, Warkadea stated the customary village will not sell land to investors wishing to build the airport.

On the contrary, customary village itself will include its assets as capital participation in the airport’s investment. With this pattern, the customary village will get benefits from capital participation as well as another contribution after the airport is built and operated. Regarding the capital participation, Warkadea ensured the government will disseminate it to all the elements of society. For this reason, he welcomed all residents to utilize the opportunity on the dissemination session by asking for explanation regarding the airport project and the land to be utilized.

“What happens is the capital participation of customary village and this will benefit and get protected by the community. Other contributions like the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) will be given if the project already accomplished. Later, another dissemination will be made, so please be attended,” he explained. Padangan explores culinary potential of tabah bamboo shoots

TABANAN - Villages are required to always make innovation to explore their potential in the hope of improving the economy of local community. Moreover, today villages have been given a sufficient ‘injection’ of funds from the central government to be managed properly in order to improve the creative economy.

Padangan village in Pupuan sub-district, for instance, through a number of residents coalesced into the members of the Pawon Bali culinary group, produces processed tabah bamboo shoots into a distinctive flavor cuisine.

Headman of Padangan, I Wayan Wardita, explained that bamboo shoots are indeed a hereditary food of Pupuan sub-district, and is now packaged attractively to make it more developed. Moreover, he is currently conducting an exploration of cooperation with hotels, so that this culinary delight can be known by broader tourists.

In processing it, Wardita continued using a special processing machine obtained from the assistance of the Tabanan Trade and Industry Agency. “We want the village potential to be more developed through its distinctive culinary delight,” he said on Sunday (Mar. 10).

He said the processing machinery assistance was obtained in 2018. It just happened because the human resources in processing bamboo shoots was just trained by bamboo shoot expert from Udayana University, so that in early January 2019 the processing began in harmony with the beginning growth of tabah bamboo shoots in the Pupuan region. “We get bamboo shoots from the community and work with the BUMDes Mandiri Sejahtera of Padangan Village,” added Wardita.

He explained the processed

tabah bamboo shoots are pure without preservatives because when picking the young bamboo shoot, it is directly boiled and given salt.

It is then put into a special cooling machine at particular temperature.

“So, we don’t add any preservatives because we want to process them purely,” he said.

With the existing village potential, tabah bamboo shoots have begun to be marketed starting from Tabanan to Denpasar at an affordable price of IDR 17,000 per 200 grams. But in order to be able to continue, at this time the Pawon Bali Culinary Group is exploring cooperation with the regional company (Perusda Dharma Santika) so that this Tabanan governmentowned company can buy it. “Now, the market depends on the order so that we have not regularly processed it. Hopefully, the Perusda can buy it,” he said firmly.

Wardita hoped that in the future bamboo shoots will be marketed to hotels throughout Bali because it is tasty when processed into vegetables and does not taste bitter. “We hope to get to reach hotel market, even though currently the availability of capital is not sufficient because the process costs are very expensive,” he said.

He explained that at a glance the processing of bamboo shoots at the time of harvesting must be carried out with special techniques, along with the peeling, sorting and slicing of the shoots. The shoot is taken about 7 centimeters and the rest is carried out at the bottom with easy slicing. Afterwards, the bamboo shoots are boiled and added salt.

Bamboo shoots having been cooked according to the specified steps are packed with a special machine and weighed. After that, it is put into a cooling machine. This tabah bamboo shoot has a durability of up to 10 months. (kmb28)

Turtle meat remains to be searched

DENPASAR — The generation born in the 1990s may not know much about the taste of turtle meat. Before that decade, turtle meat was widely traded and processed into food such as turtle satay and lawar. Processed food from turtles was initially introduced by Bugis fishermen having close relation to the King of Badung. After trying, in fact, the turtle satay and lawar are delicious and in high demand among the people of Denpasar and Badung.

“The turtles are processed and mixed with spices to make it delicious. The enjoyment of delicious turtle is famous throughout Denpasar and Badung. Finally, everyone uses turtle meat,” said Made Winarta, 43, Manager of Turtle Conservation on Sindhu Beach, Sanur, on Sunday (Mar. 10).

Later, the law on turtle conservation begins to be echoed by the government because sea turtles are preserved and protected animals. The community stops the activities of turtle meat consumption. However, there are people remaining to sell turtle meat until now. The government’s failure to create enough jobs in Asia’s third-biggest economy is a key issue for voters in the polls that are set to take place between April 11 and May 19 with results on May 23.

“I went for 50 job interviews in the last year but with no success. One company I did join laid off most of its staff, bringing me back to square one,” Chowdhary, 27, told AFP. Increasingly desperate, late last year he became one of 23,000 applicants for five government jobs as a “peon” or “office boy” with duties like making tea and photocopying, well below his qualifications.

The shocking figures are not unusual in 1.25-billion-strong India, particularly for secure government jobs with perks that attract hordes of overqualified candidates like Chowdhury. Last year 19 million applied for 63,000 positions at Indian Railways.

Some 65 percent of Indians are under 35, and economic growth has in recent times fallen below the eight-percent level seen as essential to create enough employment. A newspaper recently published what it said was an official report buried

- Asian laggard Almost half the workforce toils in agriculture, and although workers are moving to manufacturing and services as the economy modernises, the rate is slower than elsewhere in Asia.

These sectors are not creating enough jobs, hampered by stringent labour laws and insufficient investment in skills training, according to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Another factor is a sharp fall in private investment, resulting in “very little” job creation in the private sector, said Santosh Mehrotra, a professor at Jawaharlal Nehru University.

This lack of investment is caused in part by the “huge crisis” of bad debts at India’s state-owned banks, making them reluctant to lend, Mehrotra told AFP. Red tape and corruption also make buying land for factories difficult, and infrastructure is often poor.

Furthermore India is battling a dearth of decent data on which to base policy, not helped by vast numbers of people working in the shadow, cash-only economy who are

therefore not counted. “(More) than a lack of jobs, the issue is a lack of data on jobs,” Modi said last year.

- Women not working The situation is particularly dire for women. The female workforce participation rate tumbled from 38.7 percent in 2005 to 28.6 percent in 2017, one of the lowest in the world, according to the World Bank.

In the highly status-conscious and patriarchal society, women often give up working once their household income rises. The decline of agriculture, which employs more women, has also had an effect. While India’s universities may produce large numbers of graduates, there is a mismatch with what the labour market requires, and basic education for the poor is patchy. One in eight 14-year-old students in rural India cannot read simple texts, while 56 percent can’t do basic division, a recent survey showed. Millions of children aren’t even in school.

“The sectors which are growing are modern services -- telecom, education, health, banking. This requires a much higher level of education than what is available to youth today,” Mehrotra said. According to an India Today opinion poll published on Monday, unemployment is the biggest issue for voters.

“Education and jobs are two very important topics for the youth. This government has failed on both these fronts,” S. Malik, a student, said at a recent protest in Delhi.

Japan marks tsunami, nuclear tragedy eight years on

TOKYO - With flowers, silent prayers and tearful tributes, Japan Monday marked the eighth anniversary of a crippling earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster that devastated its northeastern coast and left some 18,500 people dead or missing.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, lawmakers and family members who lost their loved ones in the disaster bowed their heads in prayer at a ceremony in Tokyo at 2:46 pm (0546 GMT) -- the exact moment the magnitude-9.0 quake struck.

“We can’t help but feel sorrow when we think about the suffering of those who lost beloved family members, relatives and friends,” Abe said.

Eight years on, he said reconstruction was making “steady” progress but vowed to continue government support to tens of thousands still struggling in uncomfortable living conditions.

In a constant drizzle, residents in tsunami-hit coastal towns also laid bouquets and bowed their heads as they remembered the moment the waves hit, devastating entire communities in an instant.

Japan’s ageing Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko did not attend the ceremony this year, but were represented by their second son Prince Akishino and his wife Princess Kiko.

In addition to causing widespread death and destruction, the killer tsunami also swamped the emergency power supply at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant.

This sent its reactors into meltdown as cooling systems failed, sparking the worst global nuclear disaster since Chernobyl in 1986.

According to the National Police Agency, some 18,430 people died or

were missing as a result of the earthquake and tsunami.

In addition, more than 3,700 people -- most of them from Fukushima -- died from illness or suicide linked to the aftermath of the tragedy, according to government data, while more than 51,000 still remain displaced.

Although no-one is officially recorded as having died as a result of radiation from the accident, dozens of reactors across Japan were switched off in the aftermath.

The government has lifted evacuation orders for much of the region affected by the meltdown, except for some no-go zones with high radiation levels.

Authorities are encouraging evacuees to return, but the population in the Fukushima prefecture has more than halved from some two million in the pre-disaster period.

In 97.3 percent of the region “it is possible to lead a normal life”, said reconstruction minister Hiromichi Watanabe -- a claim disputed by NGOs such as Greenpeace.

Around 12,000 people who fled their homes for fear of radiation have filed dozens of lawsuits against the government and the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), the operator of the stricken nuclear plant.

Roughly one in two Japanese voters think the reconstruction of the disaster-hit area “is not making progress” despite the rebuilding of infrastructure such as railways and houses for people who lost their homes in the disaster.

According to the poll, 72.9 percent of voters think the Japanese government should halt its policy of exporting nuclear technology, compared to 14.7 percent who support the policy. (afp)

BUSINESS US wages rise by most in decade even as hiring tumbles

WASHINGTON - The pace of hiring in the United States fell last month to its lowest point in nearly a year and a half, a surprise drop likely reflecting harsh weather and other temporary factors that led most economists to see the slowdown as a temporary blip.

Employers added just 20,000 jobs, down from a blockbuster 311,000 in January. Even with February’s anemic gain, job growth over the past three months has averaged a solid 186,000, enough to lower the unemployment rate over time.

And average hourly pay surged 3.4 percent from a year earlier — the sharpest year-over-year increase in a decade. The unemployment rate also dropped to 3.8 percent, near the lowest level in five decades, from 4 percent in January.

All told, Friday’s monthly employment report from the government pointed to a still-sturdy job market and economy.

“The U.S. labor market is still in good shape,” said Gus Faucher, chief economist at PNC Financial. “Slower job growth was expected after huge average gains of better than 250,000 over the preceding four months.

Job growth should bounce back in March and through the rest of this year.”

Last month’s pullback in hiring does follow signs that U.S. economic growth is probably slowing because of a weaker global economy, a trade war between the United States and China and signs of caution among American consumers. Those factors have led many analysts to forecast anemic growth in the first three months of this year.

But most economists still cautioned against reading too much into February’s sluggish pace of hiring. The monthly employment data can be volatile. During the nearly decade-long recovery from the Great Recession, job growth has sometimes plunged in a single month — to 15,000 in May 2016, for example, and to 18,000 in September 2017 — only to rebound to healthy levels in the months that followed.

And February’s increase in average pay suggests that businesses are stepping up their efforts to attract and keep workers. The yearover-year increase of 3.4 percent in February is up from a corresponding figure of just 2.6 percent a year ago.

Julia Pollak, a labor economist at jobs marketplace ZipRecruiter, said many companies are becoming increasingly hungry for workers. The number of job ads on its site that offer to pay for training, she said, jumped 42 percent last year from 2017. And positions that offer flexible hours soared 110 percent — a trend that could draw more women with family responsibilities off the sidelines and into work.

Carole Witkowski, vice president of human resources at Batteries and Bulbs, said her 700store retail chain has raised starting hourly pay for workers at its distribution center from $11 to $12, with additional raises for those working evening and overnight shifts.

The company has taken other steps, she said: Jobs at the distribution center, located outside Milwaukee, don’t require high school diplomas and have been plagued by high turnover. Many workers can find jobs elsewhere. Others haven’t worked much before and aren’t always used to showing up on time regularly. So about 18 months ago, the company started paying $250 each quarter to workers who arrive on time every day.

And in the suburbs outside Chicago, when the company received no applications in response to retail job postings last winter, it offered a $500 signing bonus. That shook loose some applicants.

“We got a little aggressive there,” Witkowski said.

Nationally, though, the sluggish hiring and job cuts in February were widespread across industries. Construction cut 31,000 jobs, the most in more than five years, likely because

of cold weather. Manufacturing added just 4,000, the fewest in a year and a half, a sign that Trump’s trade war has raised costs and lowered exports for many factories.

Retailers cut 6,100 positions, while jobs in a category that mostly includes restaurants and hotels were unchanged .

The unemployment rate fell despite the tepid pace of hiring. The government uses one survey of households to calculate unemployment and a separate survey of businesses to count job growth, and sometimes the results of the two surveys diverge for a single month.

The jobless rate for African-Americans, which hit a record low of 5.9 percent in May and has frequently been celebrated by President Donald Trump, rose for a third straight month in February to 7 percent, its highest point in more than a year. The rate for Hispanic and Latino Americans, though, dropped to a record low of 4.3 percent.

The overall jobless rate fell partly because thousands of federal workers had been temporarily counted as unemployed in January during the partial government shutdown.

They returned to work and were counted as unemployed in February.

Also on a positive note, the proportion of part-time workers who’d prefer full-time jobs fell sharply. That measure had risen in January

during the shutdown as some furloughed government workers took part-time jobs temporarily. But in February, a gauge of what is called underemployment, which includes part-timers who want full-time work and discouraged people no longer looking for jobs, reached 7.3 percent, the lowest level since 2001.

There are signs that the economy is slowing: Consumer confidence fell sharply in January, held back by the shutdown and by a steep fall in stock prices in December.

And Americans spent less over the winter holidays, with consumer spending plunging in December by the most in five years.

“We are seeing a fading of the effects of the Trump tax cut and increased government spending,” which helped accelerate growth last year, said Sung Won Sohn, chief economist at SS Economics.

Analysts generally foresee growth slowing sharply in the first three months of this year to just a 1 percent annual rate, down from a 2.6 percent rate in the October-December quarter. Still, most expect a rebound in the April-June quarter, and there are already signs of one: Consumer confidence rose in February along with the stock market.

And more Americans signed contracts to buy homes in January, propelled by lower mortgage rates. (ap)

Omed-Omedan Tradition, Originally Held on Nyepi Day

Every celebration of Ngembak Geni, the day after Nyepi, Kaja hamlet, Sesetan, always organizes omed-omedan tradition. This tradition has been held since the kingdom era and remains to be maintained until now. However, there are some changes in the implementation compared to the omed-omedan in the past. What are the changes?

One of the descendants of Oka Palace of Kaja hamlet, Sesetan, I Gusti Ngurah Oka Putra, said the omed-omedan tradition was started approximately in the seventeenth or eighteenth centuries originating from his ancestor (Batara Kompyang) denoting a senior figure of Sesetan village at that time. Ahead of Nyepi Day, his ancestor named Anak Agung Made Raka suffered a severe illness.

“He was difficult to stand, let alone walk. He also forbade his citizens to visit him. However, when Nyepi arrived, residents of Kaja hamlet, Sesetan, were sad and disappointed because they were prohibited from visiting and serving him at that time. Amid the sadness and disappointment, they gathered and held tug-of-war known as omed-omedan. This is the embryo of the tradition,” said Oka Putra to Bali Post, not long ago.

As a result of the incident, said this man familiarly addressed as Turah Bima, his ancestor who was sick became angry and ordered his family to take him to the front of royal palace. Perhaps, he wanted to yell and chase away his servants as making commotion in front of the royal palace. However, when arriving at the front of royal palace, his sickness had completely gone.

Immediately, he undid his intention

to ban the crowds, even wanted to do in the contrary. Starting that day, the omed-omedan was held every year on Nyepi Day. At that time, people have not known the existence of catur brata penyepian (four abstinences) so that omed-omedan was still held on Nyepi Day. Oka Putra added that in line with the development of understanding on religion and interpretation of the Nyepi Day with the catur brata penyepian echoed by the government and Hindu Dharma Council of Indonesia (PHDI), the timing of the tradition was changed. Then, it was moved to the following day right on Ngembak Geni instead of on Nyepi Day. “This happened around the 1980s because in the past people were only abstaining from lighting fire on Nyepi,” he said.

Over time, this tradition got negative assessment from outsiders. People judged the tradition of omed-omedan is synonymous with mass kissing. Due to being angry with the judgment, Ngurah Oka as the heir of the originator of the tradition had banned the implementation of the omed-omedan tradition around the 1984s. “I rejected the false accusation disparaging our residents. Friction of the young people in the omed-omedan may happen, but the point is not the kissing,” he said.

At that time, at the location of the omed-omedan tradition was posted the announcement if the omed-omedan was abolished.

Despite the publication of such announcement, people and audiences kept coming and gathering to meet at the usual venue of the omed-omedan tradition.

Surprisingly, there were actually two pigs fighting to be getting bloody and then disappeared somewhere.

with hamlet leaders and community leaders deliberated at the venue to discuss the incident and analyzed what would happen after the incident. “Immediately, following the decision of the deliberation, the hamlet apparatuses summoned the youth club members of Kaja hamlet, Sesetan, to prepare and carry out the omed-omedan tradition at that time as in previous years and would continue every year,” he said.

According to Oka Putra, at first the tradition was directly coordinat-

ed by his family commenced with ngelawar at his royal palace. Later in the afternoon, the lawar food was given to the teenagers participating in the omed-omedan tradition. After three periods, the tradition was later taken over by sekaa taruna or customary village youth club until now. “In the past, the participants were not just teenagers, but also married people. Moreover, a couple was given a chance at the opening session. But today it is only carried out by sekaa taruna members,” he concluded. (kmb)

WASHINGTON - For the second time in less than six months, a Boeing 737 MAX 8 has crashed minutes after takeoff and killed everyone on board, raising fresh questions about the safety of a model that is crucial to the US giant’s future plans.

UN environment talks open under shadow of Ethiopian plane crash

NAIROBI - An assembly of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) opened in Nairobi Monday under a dark cloud cast by the plane crash that killed 157 people, including 22 United Nations staff, many heading for the annual event.

Delegates arrived with the UN flag flying at half-mast, and the flags of all UN nations that usually adorn the UNEP headquarters having been taken down. As they wondered aloud who among their colleagues may have been on board the ill-fated Boeing, delegates hugged and comforted one another, and observed a minute’s silence at the meeting’s start.

According to Maimunah Sharif, head of UN Habitat, at least 22 UN employees were among those who perished when the Nairobi-bound Ethiopian Airlines jet crashed early Sunday just six minutes after take-off from Addis Ababa.

“I stand before you on the first day of the UN Environment Assembly, which has officially commenced today in the wake of this tragedy,” she told delegates. “We will not forget this tragedy, nor those who perished.

Let us reflect that our colleagues were willing to travel and to work far from their homes and loved ones to make the world a better place to live.”

Nairobi hosts the global headquarters of UNEP, and is the regional seat for many UN agencies.

The annual UNEP assembly gathers heads of state, ministers, business leaders and civil society representatives to work on ways to slash pollution and build a greener global economy. In a statement ahead of the conference, the UN said it was “deeply saddened by the news of the Ethiopian Airlines accident.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those affected. We are following developments closely,” it said. A member of the UNEP secretariat told AFP Monday it was “still trying to consolidate” the number of staffers killed. Among the UN staff were some who worked for the World Food Programme, the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) and the International Organization for Migration, the agencies have said. (afp)

On Sunday, the 157 passengers and crew members of a 737 MAX operated by Ethiopian Airlines were killed. Last October, the same model of plane, operated by Lion Air, crashed in Indonesia, killing 189.

China -- an important market for Boeing -- became the first country to ground the 737 MAX 8 on Monday. Ethiopian Airlines did the same, saying the decision came as an “extra safety precaution.”

Only the flight data and cockpit conversation contained in the doomed aircraft’s two black boxes can provide tangible evidence of what may have caused the latest accident -- technical problems, pilot error or a combination of factors.

“The pilot mentioned that he had difficulties and he wants to return.

He was given clearance” to turn around, Ethiopian Airlines chief executive Tewolde GebreMariam told reporters in Addis Ababa.

Weather conditions were good in the Ethiopian capital at the time of the flight.

- Coincidence or repeat problem? While Teal Group expert Richard Aboulafia said it was “too soon to make any kind of meaningful comment,” another industry expert stressed the similarities between the two incidents.

“It’s the same plane. Like Lion Air, the (Ethiopian Airlines) accident took place shortly after takeoff and the pilots signaled they were experiencing problems, then the plane crashed. The similarities are clear,” the expert added, requesting anonymity to speak freely on

the matter.

Chinese aviation authorities also noted the “similarities” between the two deadly incidents, saying operations would only resume after “confirming the relevant measures to effectively ensure flight safety.”

Boeing has delivered 76 of the aircraft to Chinese airlines, and another 104 are on order, according to data from the company’s website.

But Michel Merluzeau, director of Aerospace & Defense Market Analysis, noted that “these are the only similarities, and the comparison stops there as we do not have any other reliable information at this juncture.”

In both cases, the air carriers have solid reputations.

Since the Lion Air accident, the 737 MAX has faced growing skepticism from the aviation community. The program had already encountered problems during development.

In May 2017, Boeing had halted 737 MAX test flights due to quality concerns with the engine produced

by CFM International, a company jointly owned by France’s Safran Aircraft Engines and GE Aviation.

In late January, 350 of the narrow-body, twin-engine planes were delivered to customers out of 5,011 orders from Boeing.

The latest accident is a major blow for Boeing, whose MAX carriers are the latest version of the Boeing 737, its bestseller of all times with more than 10,000 aircraft produced.

“MAX is a very important program for Boeing in the next decade.

It represents 64 percent of the company’s production to 2032, and has

significant operational margins,” said Merluzeau.

“It is an essential tool to global transport and trade.”

He said the next 24 hours are “key” for Boeing to manage the crisis with both travelers and investors worried about the reliability of its plane.

- Market backlash expected Boeing said it was “deeply saddened” by the Ethiopian Airlines incident, adding that a technical team would be providing assistance to investigators.

The expert who requested anonymity said Boeing will likely face some backlash in the markets, but the damage will likely be limited for the group, whose only significant competitor is Airbus.

The plane’s future is so important for Boeing that if any technical corrections are needed, it will make them.

Following the October 29 incident in Indonesia, the aerospace community raised questions about the lack of information on the plane’s anti-stall system.

After investigators said the doomed aircraft had problems with its airspeed indicator and angle of attack (AoA) sensors, Boeing issued a special bulletin telling operators what to do when they face the same situation.

An AoA sensor provides data about the angle at which air passes over the wings and tells pilots how much lift a plane is getting. The information can be critical in preventing an aircraft from stalling. (afp)

KRL Train Derailed After Being Hit by Huge Electric Pole

JAKARTA - An electric train (KRL) experienced an accident in Kebon Pedes area, Bogor City, West Java on Sunday, March 10, 2019.

The train was allegedly hit by a huge electric pole, causing it to derailed.

the location, there were three cars damaged. Two of the train carriages were also rolled over.

Up until now, the evacuation process is still ongoing. Officers from PT KAI Daop 1 and PT Kereta Comuterline Indonesia were

already on location, evacuating passengers and also carriages.

The accident made the train journey towards Bogor and vice versa stopped temporarily. “Until now, the Jakarta City / Jatinegara crossing KRL trips and vice versa

cannot be served,” said PT KCI Vice President of Corporate Communications Eva Chairunisa.

The accident also made the traffic congested around the location.

Because the train stopped right in front of the train crossing on Jalan

Kebon Pedes which led to CilebutPasar Anyar. The road is temporarily impassable.

MEDAN - The Tanjung Balai Police and Customs and Excise officers in North Sumatra Province have arrested a Malaysian citizen, only identified by his initials as NZ, for allegedly smuggling 76.4 grams of crystal meth.

Tanjung Balai City Police Chief Adjunct Senior Commissioner Irfan Rifai informed Antara in Tanjung Balai City on Sunday that police investigators seized the crystal methamphetamine that this 42-year-old Malaysian citizen had attempted to smuggle.

The suspect concealed a plastic pack of crystal meth, or popularly known as Sabu-Sabu, inside his right shoe, while two others were concealed in his anus. The investigators were able to retrieve the two remaining packs from NZ`s body, he revealed.

In addition to the crystal meth, the police officers confiscated other evidence of crime from the suspect, including two cellular phones, Rp400 thousand in cash, and a pair of shoes, Rifai revealed.

NZ entered Indonesia by board-

ing a ferry vessel from Malaysia, which arrived at the Teluk Nibung Port in Tanjung Balai City, North Sumatra Province, on Saturday (Mar 9) at around 4:30 p.m. local time.

The port`s Customs and Excise authorities detected the crystal meth packages that the suspect had carried through their X-ray machine.

“According to his ID, the suspect resides in Bandar Baru Sentul, Kuala Lumpur,” Rifai noted.

In uncovering the case, the Tan-

jung Balai police investigators then coordinated with their colleagues in Medan, North Sumatra Province`s capital city, to hunt down another suspect, an Indonesian citizen.

The Medan city police investigators succeeded in apprehending a suspect only identified as P, 22, residing on Yusuf Jintan Street of Cinta Damai Village, Percut Sei Tuan Sub-district, Deli Serdang District, North Sumatra Province, on early Sunday.

“The two suspects are currently in the Tanjung Balai police`s custo-

dy for legal process,” he remarked.

Indonesia is indeed perceived by both local and transnational drug dealers as their potential market due to its huge population and millions of drug users.

The National Narcotics Agency (BNN) noted that some 50 Indonesians die of illicit drugs every day, while the total number of drug users in the country has reached seven million.

A Jegog ensemble consists of four types of sound. The lowest octave instrument is called Jegog, a large

xylophone-like instrument which requires the player to sit on it while playing the music.

And then there are two melody playing instruments called Undir and Kuntung– two octaves higher than jegog. The instrument is still considered large in shape so the player needs to crouch on top of it. The higher pitches are Kancil and Suir, which are one octave higher than the melody playing instruments. Last but not least is the Barangan, the leader of the ensemble. It is usually played faster than any other.

Dovizioso edges Marquez to win season-opening Qatar MotoGP

DOHA - Italy’s Andrea Dovizioso won the season-opening Qatar MotoGP for the second year running on Sunday, holding off a desperate challenge from world champion Marc Marquez to take first place.

The two riders swapped positions on the final lap but it was Dovizioso, having led for much of the race on his Ducati, who secured victory by just 0.023 of a second over his Honda rival.

It ensured a repeat of last year’s top two in Doha, when in another thrilling finish, Dovizioso triumphed ahead of Marquez by 0.027 of a second.

Britain’s Cal Crutchlow, on another Honda, also made the po-

dium, finishing third.

“I am so happy because everything before the weekend was so bad,” said Dovizioso.

“It’s nice to open like this against a champion.”

The Italian had come into the Doha race concerned about the speed of his bike, but had been able to start in second place on the grid, following qualification.

He led a group of eight riders who dominated the race but was

closely followed by Marquez all the way.

The Spaniard, who started third on the grid despite crashing twice over the weekend, pounced on the tenth corner of the final lap to take the lead, albeit briefly, before Dovizioso immediately took back the advantage.

“It was exactly the same as last year, I tried to be there at the end,” said Marquez. “But I am happy because it’s 20 points.”

Crutchlow, who suffered a badly broken right ankle at the end of last season, said his third place was a great result.

“It’s great to be back racing in

MotoGP let alone be on the podium,” said the Briton who added that he feared he might not be able to walk again following the crash in Australia last October.

Spain’s Alex Rins finished fourth on a Suzuki, with legendary Italian Valentino Rossi, on a Yamaha, in fifth. Maverick Vinales, also on a Yamaha and who started in pole position, finished seventh.

French rookie Fabio Quartararo, another Yamaha rider, finished in 16th place despite starting in fifth on the grid after being forced to start the race from the pit lane after his bike stalled in the warmup lap.

Despite safety fears over the desert track’s condition during the night race, only one rider crashed out, Britain’s Bradley Smith.

Meanwhile, in the night’s other races, teenager Kaito Toba snatched victory in Moto3 to become the first Japanese rider to win in that class.

Italy’s Lorenzo Dalla Porta was second with Spain’s Aron Canet third. There was also an exceptionally close finish in the Moto 2 race with Italian Lorenzo Baldassarri just edging out Switzerland’s Thomas Luthi to win.

INDIAN WELLS - World number two Rafael Nadal raced into the third round of the ATP Indian Wells Masters as Roger Federer made a less speedy but still successful start to his quest for a sixth title on Sunday.

Nadal, a three-time Indian Wells winner, needed just 72 minutes to get past overmatched Jared Donaldson, 6-1, 6-1.

Federer, who is seeking to break out of a tie with top seed Novak Djokovic for most titles in the California desert, looked set for a similarly easy time of it, but had to

turn back a second-set challenge from German Peter Gojowczyk in a 6-1, 7-5 win.

Fourth-seeded Federer said he was relieved not to go to a second-set tiebreaker after falling behind 3-1 to the free-swinging German, who is ranked 85th in the world.

The Swiss regained the break and, after saving four break points to make it 4-4, cruised home.

“I struggled a little bit with my serving in that second set and that gave him chances. Because he was serving better, he started to swing

more freely and then it was tough,” Federer said.

“I’m really happy I found a way in that second set.”

Federer next faces compatriot Stan Wawrinka, a three-time Grand Slam champion currently unseeded as he continues his return from injury.

‘Get ready to come back!’ - Ronaldo carries Juve hopes against Atletico

Juventus’s Champions League hopes are hanging on Cristiano Ronaldo pulling off another sensational comeback as the Italians trail 2-0 to defensive specialists Atletico Madrid going into the last 16, second-leg tie in Turin on Tuesday.

“We didn’t expect to lose the first leg 2-0, but anything can happen, and we want to give a great response in our home, in front of our fans,” Ronaldo told Juventus TV ahead of the game in the Allianz Stadium.

“These are the great nights, the fantastic ones: the Champions League nights,” he continued. “The team is confident of playing a great game and I am too. To the fans I say: think positive, let’s believe.

“Get ready to come back!”

The seven-time reigning Italian champions bought Ronaldo last summer from Real Madrid for 100 million euros ($117 million) to end their Champions League heartbreak going back 23 years.

The 34-year-old’s stunning overhead kick for Real in the quarter-finals in Turin last April had dumped Juventus out of the tournament once again.

Expectations are high that he can reproduce his improbable hat-trick which lifted Real Madrid past Wolfsburg in April 2016 with the Spaniards 2-0 down to the Germans after the first leg.

Juventus have come from behind in the elite European competition eight times -- including in the 1996 quarter-finals against Real Madrid on their way to winning the title.

They also lifted the European trophy in 1985, but have finished runners-up five times since their last success, including twice in the past four years.

- Years of disappointments “CR7 is here for that,” wrote Italian sports daily Corriere dello Sport, of “a game Cristiano cannot get wrong.” “He wasn’t signed to win the Scudetto or to boost merchandising, Juve are waiting to end years of disappointments.”

Ronaldo won five Champions League titles with Manchester United and Real Madrid and has scored a record 121 goals of which 57 have proved decisive.

The top scorer in the Champions League for the last six seasons, he has however scored just once in this year’s competition, delivering a performance far below expectations in Madrid.

Since the Madrid game he has not scored in the league and has been overtaken as the top Serie A scorer by Sampdoria’s Fabio Quagliarella, who has 20 goals to Ronaldo’s 19.

The problem for Juventus is they need to score at least twice against a team that specialises in defence. Diego Simeone’s Atletico -- second in La Liga -- have not conceded a goal for five games.

“Everyone knows that they are a strong team, they defend very well, they don’t take a lot of risks and they play on the counterattack, but we are ready, and we will do everything we can to beat them,” said Ronaldo, who has scored 22 goals against Atletico.

“The fine details will make

the difference, and we want to win and qualify for the quarter-finals.”

- High stakes Former-Wolfsburg manager Dieter Hecking believes Ronaldo can make a difference.

“Ronaldo is capable of everything, he can also score three goals again as he did against my Wolfsburg. Of course he can,” Hecking told Gazzetta Dello Sport.

“Atletico have the best defence in Europe and an excellent attack: without Ronaldo, who can invent goals in any way, it would be impossible. “If I said that Ronaldo is not the strongest player I have ever met, I would lie.

“I remember that night I told the team that we should not be afraid neither of him nor the Bernabeu, but at 17 minutes we were already 2-0 with a double

Allegri’s future at the club he has won 10 trophies with since 2014 will likely hinge on this game. The Juventus coach knows the stakes are high.

“I think expectations have been raised far too much and it has become an obsession,” said the 51 year-old.

Solari uncertain over Real Madrid future despite victory

Real Madrid’s losing run is over but Santiago Solari offered no assurances over his future after a chaotic 4-1 victory over struggling Real Valladolid on Sunday.

Asked afterwards if it could have been his final game as coach, Solari said: “I cannot answer that. Tomorrow we have a training session and that is what I focus on.”

Karim Benzema scored twice, including one from the penalty spot, between strikes from Raphael Varane and Luka Modric as Madrid came from behind at the Jose Zorrilla Stadium, after Anuar Tuhami had given Valladolid a deserved first-half lead.

They could have been four up had VAR not twice cancelled out goals from Sergi Guardiola, who later also hit the post, while Ruben Alcaraz blasted an early penalty over the crossbar.

It was a frantic opening half an hour to a frenzied night, which began with the lights going out after a power failure before kick-off and ended with Casemiro being sent off, only for Modric to add Madrid’s fourth.

Real stay third in La Liga, 12 points adrift of Barcelona and five behind Atletico.

Valladolid were the opponents for Solari’s first league game in charge back in November when another rather flattering 2-0 victory set the team off on a run of eight wins from nine games.

But three consecutive defeats at home, to Barcelona twice and Ajax in the Champions League, meant any sense of success this time was muted.

“It has been a difficult week for everyone, for the players too,” Solari said.

“The first 20 minutes reflected that and it cost us, but the rest of the game they showed their professionalism, their spirit and how well they have reacted to adversity.”

The result was emphatic but, against a Valladolid side that had scored only once in their last five games, the performance less convincing, with club president Florentino Perez watching on in the stands.

- ‘Difficult for everyone’ “It is difficult for everyone,” said Real defender Nacho. “The relationship (with Solari) right now is complicated because things are not working out.”

Solari’s tenure will almost certainly end in the summer and perhaps sooner, if either results take another turn for the worse or a suitable replacement can be found. Jose Mourinho and Zinedine Zidane were both linked with returns last week.

Police have charged a Birmingham fan who punched Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish in a shocking incident during Sunday’s Championship clash on a day of shameful violence in English football.

this evening charged a man with invading the pitch and assaulting Aston Villa player Jack Grealish during the Second City derby.

“Paul Mitchell, aged 27, has been remanded in custody to appear before B’ham Mags (Birmingham Magistrates) Court tomorrow (Mon 11 March).”

A visibly furious Grealish was helped to his feet and was able to continue playing once order was restored at Birmingham’s St Andrew’s stadium.

Grealish produced the perfect response to the assault by scoring the only goal if the game in the 70th minute. He then jumped into the stand to celebrate with the Villa fans behind the goal and was booked as a result.

“I was walking into position and then just felt a whack around the side of the face,” Grealish said. “Obviously there’s rivalry and stuff in football but I don’t think there’s any place for that really.”

- ‘No excuses’ Meanwhile a Birmingham statement said: “We deplore the behaviour of the individual who committed this act and rest assured he will be banned from St. Andrew’s for life.

“What happened has no place in football or society. Jack is a Birmingham lad and regardless of

club allegiance should not have been subjected to this -- there are no excuses.”

Sunday also saw a worrying incident at the Emirates, the home ground of Arsenal.

After a Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang penalty made it 2-0 to Arsenal -- the eventual result -- a lone fan ran onto the field to celebrate with the players and appeared to make contact with United defender Smalling.

“A man has been arrested on suspicion of common assault and pitch invasion following an incident during the Arsenal v Man Utd game at the Emirates Stadium today,” said a Metropolitan Police statement issued Sunday. “He is currently in custody at a north London police station.”

After the match, Solskjaer insisted: “(There) shouldn’t be a place that someone runs onto the pitch.

“We just have to make sure we play football and they (the fans) watch football.” It was a view shared by Arsenal boss Unai Emery, who said: “I don’t want that.”

Sunday’s incidents followed several recent episodes of hooliganism, including coin attacks on players and managers, in Scottish football, with Rangers captain James Tavernier confronted by a pitch-invading Hibernian fan after his side’s 1-1 draw at Easter Road on Friday.(afp)

‘Get ready to come back!’ - Ronaldo carries Juve hopes against Atletico

Juventus’s Champions League hopes are hanging on Cristiano Ronaldo pulling off another sensational comeback as the Italians trail 2-0 to defensive specialists Atletico Madrid going into the last 16, second-leg tie in Turin on Tuesday.

“We didn’t expect to lose the first leg 2-0, but anything can happen, and we want to give a great response in our home, in front of our fans,” Ronaldo told Juventus TV ahead of the game in the Allianz Stadium.

“These are the great nights, the fantastic ones: the Champions League nights,” he continued. “The team is confident of playing a great game and I am too. To the fans I say: think positive, let’s believe.

“Get ready to come back!”

The seven-time reigning Italian champions bought Ronaldo last summer from Real Madrid for 100 million euros ($117 million) to end their Champions League heartbreak going back 23 years.

The 34-year-old’s stunning overhead kick for Real in the quarter-finals in Turin last April had dumped Juventus out of the tournament once again.

Expectations are high that he can reproduce his improbable hat-trick which lifted Real Madrid past Wolfsburg in April 2016 with the Spaniards 2-0 down to the Germans after the first leg.

Juventus have come from behind in the elite European competition eight times -- including in the 1996 quarter-finals against Real Madrid on their way to winning the title.

They also lifted the European trophy in 1985, but have finished runners-up five times since their last success, including twice in the past four years.

- Years of disappointments “CR7 is here for that,” wrote Italian sports daily Corriere dello Sport, of “a game Cristiano cannot get wrong.” “He wasn’t signed to win the Scudetto or to boost merchandising, Juve are waiting to end years of disappointments.”

Ronaldo won five Champions League titles with Manchester United and Real Madrid and has scored a record 121 goals of which 57 have proved decisive.

The top scorer in the Champions League for the last six seasons, he has however scored just once in this year’s competition, delivering a performance far below expectations in Madrid.

Since the Madrid game he has not scored in the league and has been overtaken as the top Serie A scorer by Sampdoria’s Fabio Quagliarella, who has 20 goals to Ronaldo’s 19.

The problem for Juventus is they need to score at least twice against a team that specialises in defence. Diego Simeone’s Atletico -- second in La Liga -- have not conceded a goal for five games.

“Everyone knows that they are a strong team, they defend very well, they don’t take a lot of risks and they play on the counterattack, but we are ready, and we will do everything we can to beat them,” said Ronaldo, who has scored 22 goals against Atletico.

“The fine details will make

the difference, and we want to win and qualify for the quarter-finals.”

- High stakes Former-Wolfsburg manager Dieter Hecking believes Ronaldo can make a difference.

“Ronaldo is capable of everything, he can also score three goals again as he did against my Wolfsburg. Of course he can,” Hecking told Gazzetta Dello Sport.

“Atletico have the best defence in Europe and an excellent attack: without Ronaldo, who can invent goals in any way, it would be impossible. “If I said that Ronaldo is not the strongest player I have ever met, I would lie.

“I remember that night I told the team that we should not be afraid neither of him nor the Bernabeu, but at 17 minutes we were already 2-0 with a double

by CR7, it was monstrous.”

Allegri’s future at the club he has won 10 trophies with since 2014 will likely hinge on this game. The Juventus coach knows the stakes are high.

“I think expectations have been raised far too much and it has become an obsession,” said the 51 year-old.

Solari uncertain over Real Madrid future despite victory

Real Madrid’s losing run is over but Santiago Solari offered no assurances over his future after a chaotic 4-1 victory over struggling Real Valladolid on Sunday.

Asked afterwards if it could have been his final game as coach, Solari said: “I cannot answer that. Tomorrow we have a training session and that is what I focus on.”

Karim Benzema scored twice, including one from the penalty spot, between strikes from Raphael Varane and Luka Modric as Madrid came from behind at the Jose Zorrilla Stadium, after Anuar Tuhami had given Valladolid a deserved first-half lead.

They could have been four up had VAR not twice cancelled out goals from Sergi Guardiola, who later also hit the post, while Ruben Alcaraz blasted an early penalty over the crossbar.

It was a frantic opening half an hour to a frenzied night, which began with the lights going out after a power failure before kick-off and ended with Casemiro being sent off, only for Modric to add Madrid’s fourth.

Real stay third in La Liga, 12 points adrift of Barcelona and five behind Atletico.

Valladolid were the opponents for Solari’s first league game in charge back in November when another rather flattering 2-0 victory set the team off on a run of eight wins from nine games.

But three consecutive defeats at home, to Barcelona twice and Ajax in the Champions League, meant any sense of success this time was muted.

“It has been a difficult week for everyone, for the players too,” Solari said.

“The first 20 minutes reflected that and it cost us, but the rest of the game they showed their professionalism, their spirit and how well they have reacted to adversity.”

The result was emphatic but, against a Valladolid side that had scored only once in their last five games, the performance less convincing, with club president Florentino Perez watching on in the stands.

- ‘Difficult for everyone’ “It is difficult for everyone,” said Real defender Nacho. “The relationship (with Solari) right now is complicated because things are not working out.”

Solari’s tenure will almost certainly end in the summer and perhaps sooner, if either results take another turn for the worse or a suitable replacement can be found. Jose Mourinho and Zinedine Zidane were both linked with returns last week.

A Jegog ensemble consists of four types of sound. The lowest octave instrument is called Jegog, a large

xylophone-like instrument which requires the player to sit on it while playing the music.

And then there are two melody playing instruments called Undir and Kuntung– two octaves higher than jegog. The instrument is still considered large in shape so the player needs to crouch on top of it. The higher pitches are Kancil and Suir, which are one octave higher than the melody playing instruments. Last but not least is the Barangan, the leader of the ensemble. It is usually played faster than any other.

Dovizioso edges Marquez to win season-opening Qatar MotoGP

DOHA - Italy’s Andrea Dovizioso won the season-opening Qatar MotoGP for the second year running on Sunday, holding off a desperate challenge from world champion Marc Marquez to take first place.

The two riders swapped positions on the final lap but it was Dovizioso, having led for much of the race on his Ducati, who secured victory by just 0.023 of a second over his Honda rival.

It ensured a repeat of last year’s top two in Doha, when in another thrilling finish, Dovizioso triumphed ahead of Marquez by 0.027 of a second.

Britain’s Cal Crutchlow, on another Honda, also made the po-

dium, finishing third.

“I am so happy because everything before the weekend was so bad,” said Dovizioso.

“It’s nice to open like this against a champion.”

The Italian had come into the Doha race concerned about the speed of his bike, but had been able to start in second place on the grid, following qualification.

He led a group of eight riders who dominated the race but was

closely followed by Marquez all the way.

The Spaniard, who started third on the grid despite crashing twice over the weekend, pounced on the tenth corner of the final lap to take the lead, albeit briefly, before Dovizioso immediately took back the advantage.

“It was exactly the same as last year, I tried to be there at the end,” said Marquez. “But I am happy because it’s 20 points.”

Crutchlow, who suffered a badly broken right ankle at the end of last season, said his third place was a great result.

“It’s great to be back racing in

MotoGP let alone be on the podium,” said the Briton who added that he feared he might not be able to walk again following the crash in Australia last October.

Spain’s Alex Rins finished fourth on a Suzuki, with legendary Italian Valentino Rossi, on a Yamaha, in fifth. Maverick Vinales, also on a Yamaha and who started in pole position, finished seventh.

French rookie Fabio Quartararo, another Yamaha rider, finished in 16th place despite starting in fifth on the grid after being forced to start the race from the pit lane after his bike stalled in the warmup lap.

Despite safety fears over the desert track’s condition during the night race, only one rider crashed out, Britain’s Bradley Smith.

Meanwhile, in the night’s other races, teenager Kaito Toba snatched victory in Moto3 to become the first Japanese rider to win in that class.

Italy’s Lorenzo Dalla Porta was second with Spain’s Aron Canet third. There was also an exceptionally close finish in the Moto 2 race with Italian Lorenzo Baldassarri just edging out Switzerland’s Thomas Luthi to win.

INDIAN WELLS - World number two Rafael Nadal raced into the third round of the ATP Indian Wells Masters as Roger Federer made a less speedy but still successful start to his quest for a sixth title on Sunday.

Nadal, a three-time Indian Wells winner, needed just 72 minutes to get past overmatched Jared Donaldson, 6-1, 6-1.

Federer, who is seeking to break out of a tie with top seed Novak Djokovic for most titles in the California desert, looked set for a similarly easy time of it, but had to

turn back a second-set challenge from German Peter Gojowczyk in a 6-1, 7-5 win.

Fourth-seeded Federer said he was relieved not to go to a second-set tiebreaker after falling behind 3-1 to the free-swinging German, who is ranked 85th in the world.

The Swiss regained the break and, after saving four break points to make it 4-4, cruised home.

“I struggled a little bit with my serving in that second set and that gave him chances. Because he was serving better, he started to swing

more freely and then it was tough,” Federer said.

“I’m really happy I found a way in that second set.”

Federer next faces compatriot Stan Wawrinka, a three-time Grand Slam champion currently unseeded as he continues his return from injury.

WASHINGTON - For the second time in less than six months, a Boeing 737 MAX 8 has crashed minutes after takeoff and killed everyone on board, raising fresh questions about the safety of a model that is crucial to the US giant’s future plans.

UN environment talks open under shadow of Ethiopian plane crash

NAIROBI - An assembly of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) opened in Nairobi Monday under a dark cloud cast by the plane crash that killed 157 people, including 22 United Nations staff, many heading for the annual event.

Delegates arrived with the UN flag flying at half-mast, and the flags of all UN nations that usually adorn the UNEP headquarters having been taken down. As they wondered aloud who among their colleagues may have been on board the ill-fated Boeing, delegates hugged and comforted one another, and observed a minute’s silence at the meeting’s start.

According to Maimunah Sharif, head of UN Habitat, at least 22 UN employees were among those who perished when the Nairobi-bound Ethiopian Airlines jet crashed early Sunday just six minutes after take-off from Addis Ababa.

“I stand before you on the first day of the UN Environment Assembly, which has officially commenced today in the wake of this tragedy,” she told delegates. “We will not forget this tragedy, nor those who perished.

Let us reflect that our colleagues were willing to travel and to work far from their homes and loved ones to make the world a better place to live.”

Nairobi hosts the global headquarters of UNEP, and is the regional seat for many UN agencies.

The annual UNEP assembly gathers heads of state, ministers, business leaders and civil society representatives to work on ways to slash pollution and build a greener global economy. In a statement ahead of the conference, the UN said it was “deeply saddened by the news of the Ethiopian Airlines accident.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those affected. We are following developments closely,” it said. A member of the UNEP secretariat told AFP Monday it was “still trying to consolidate” the number of staffers killed. Among the UN staff were some who worked for the World Food Programme, the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) and the International Organization for Migration, the agencies have said. (afp)

On Sunday, the 157 passengers and crew members of a 737 MAX operated by Ethiopian Airlines were killed. Last October, the same model of plane, operated by Lion Air, crashed in Indonesia, killing 189.

China -- an important market for Boeing -- became the first country to ground the 737 MAX 8 on Monday. Ethiopian Airlines did the same, saying the decision came as an “extra safety precaution.”

Only the flight data and cockpit conversation contained in the doomed aircraft’s two black boxes can provide tangible evidence of what may have caused the latest accident -- technical problems, pilot error or a combination of factors.

“The pilot mentioned that he had difficulties and he wants to return.

He was given clearance” to turn around, Ethiopian Airlines chief executive Tewolde GebreMariam told reporters in Addis Ababa.

Weather conditions were good in the Ethiopian capital at the time of the flight.

- Coincidence or repeat problem? While Teal Group expert Richard Aboulafia said it was “too soon to make any kind of meaningful comment,” another industry expert stressed the similarities between the two incidents.

“It’s the same plane. Like Lion Air, the (Ethiopian Airlines) accident took place shortly after takeoff and the pilots signaled they were experiencing problems, then the plane crashed. The similarities are clear,” the expert added, requesting anonymity to speak freely on

the matter.

Chinese aviation authorities also noted the “similarities” between the two deadly incidents, saying operations would only resume after “confirming the relevant measures to effectively ensure flight safety.”

Boeing has delivered 76 of the aircraft to Chinese airlines, and another 104 are on order, according to data from the company’s website.

But Michel Merluzeau, director of Aerospace & Defense Market Analysis, noted that “these are the only similarities, and the comparison stops there as we do not have any other reliable information at this juncture.”

In both cases, the air carriers have solid reputations.

Since the Lion Air accident, the 737 MAX has faced growing skepticism from the aviation community. The program had already encountered problems during development.

In May 2017, Boeing had halted 737 MAX test flights due to quality concerns with the engine produced

by CFM International, a company jointly owned by France’s Safran Aircraft Engines and GE Aviation.

In late January, 350 of the narrow-body, twin-engine planes were delivered to customers out of 5,011 orders from Boeing.

The latest accident is a major blow for Boeing, whose MAX carriers are the latest version of the Boeing 737, its bestseller of all times with more than 10,000 aircraft produced.

“MAX is a very important program for Boeing in the next decade.

It represents 64 percent of the company’s production to 2032, and has

significant operational margins,” said Merluzeau.

“It is an essential tool to global transport and trade.”

He said the next 24 hours are “key” for Boeing to manage the crisis with both travelers and investors worried about the reliability of its plane.

- Market backlash expected Boeing said it was “deeply saddened” by the Ethiopian Airlines incident, adding that a technical team would be providing assistance to investigators.

The expert who requested anonymity said Boeing will likely face some backlash in the markets, but the damage will likely be limited for the group, whose only significant competitor is Airbus.

The plane’s future is so important for Boeing that if any technical corrections are needed, it will make them.

Following the October 29 incident in Indonesia, the aerospace community raised questions about the lack of information on the plane’s anti-stall system.

After investigators said the doomed aircraft had problems with its airspeed indicator and angle of attack (AoA) sensors, Boeing issued a special bulletin telling operators what to do when they face the same situation.

An AoA sensor provides data about the angle at which air passes over the wings and tells pilots how much lift a plane is getting. The information can be critical in preventing an aircraft from stalling. (afp)

JAKARTA - An electric train (KRL) experienced an accident in Kebon Pedes area, Bogor City, West Java on Sunday, March 10, 2019.

The train was allegedly hit by a huge electric pole, causing it to derailed.

From Tempo`s observation at

the location, there were three cars damaged. Two of the train carriages were also rolled over.

Up until now, the evacuation process is still ongoing. Officers from PT KAI Daop 1 and PT Kereta Comuterline Indonesia were

already on location, evacuating passengers and also carriages.

The accident made the train journey towards Bogor and vice versa stopped temporarily. “Until now, the Jakarta City / Jatinegara crossing KRL trips and vice versa

cannot be served,” said PT KCI Vice President of Corporate Communications Eva Chairunisa.

The accident also made the traffic congested around the location.

Because the train stopped right in front of the train crossing on Jalan

Kebon Pedes which led to CilebutPasar Anyar. The road is temporarily impassable.

MEDAN - The Tanjung Balai Police and Customs and Excise officers in North Sumatra Province have arrested a Malaysian citizen, only identified by his initials as NZ, for allegedly smuggling 76.4 grams of crystal meth.

Tanjung Balai City Police Chief Adjunct Senior Commissioner Irfan Rifai informed Antara in Tanjung Balai City on Sunday that police investigators seized the crystal methamphetamine that this 42-year-old Malaysian citizen had attempted to smuggle.

The suspect concealed a plastic pack of crystal meth, or popularly known as Sabu-Sabu, inside his right shoe, while two others were concealed in his anus. The investigators were able to retrieve the two remaining packs from NZ`s body, he revealed.

In addition to the crystal meth, the police officers confiscated other evidence of crime from the suspect, including two cellular phones, Rp400 thousand in cash, and a pair of shoes, Rifai revealed.

NZ entered Indonesia by board-

ing a ferry vessel from Malaysia, which arrived at the Teluk Nibung Port in Tanjung Balai City, North Sumatra Province, on Saturday (Mar 9) at around 4:30 p.m. local time.

The port`s Customs and Excise authorities detected the crystal meth packages that the suspect had carried through their X-ray machine.

“According to his ID, the suspect resides in Bandar Baru Sentul, Kuala Lumpur,” Rifai noted.

In uncovering the case, the Tan-

jung Balai police investigators then coordinated with their colleagues in Medan, North Sumatra Province`s capital city, to hunt down another suspect, an Indonesian citizen.

The Medan city police investigators succeeded in apprehending a suspect only identified as P, 22, residing on Yusuf Jintan Street of Cinta Damai Village, Percut Sei Tuan Sub-district, Deli Serdang District, North Sumatra Province, on early Sunday.

“The two suspects are currently in the Tanjung Balai police`s custo-

dy for legal process,” he remarked.

Indonesia is indeed perceived by both local and transnational drug dealers as their potential market due to its huge population and millions of drug users.

The National Narcotics Agency (BNN) noted that some 50 Indonesians die of illicit drugs every day, while the total number of drug users in the country has reached seven million.

BUSINESS US wages rise by most in decade even as hiring tumbles

WASHINGTON - The pace of hiring in the United States fell last month to its lowest point in nearly a year and a half, a surprise drop likely reflecting harsh weather and other temporary factors that led most economists to see the slowdown as a temporary blip.

Employers added just 20,000 jobs, down from a blockbuster 311,000 in January. Even with February’s anemic gain, job growth over the past three months has averaged a solid 186,000, enough to lower the unemployment rate over time.

And average hourly pay surged 3.4 percent from a year earlier — the sharpest year-over-year increase in a decade. The unemployment rate also dropped to 3.8 percent, near the lowest level in five decades, from 4 percent in January.

All told, Friday’s monthly employment report from the government pointed to a still-sturdy job market and economy.

“The U.S. labor market is still in good shape,” said Gus Faucher, chief economist at PNC Financial. “Slower job growth was expected after huge average gains of better than 250,000 over the preceding four months.

Job growth should bounce back in March and through the rest of this year.”

Last month’s pullback in hiring does follow signs that U.S. economic growth is probably slowing because of a weaker global economy, a trade war between the United States and China and signs of caution among American consumers. Those factors have led many analysts to forecast anemic growth in the first three months of this year.

But most economists still cautioned against reading too much into February’s sluggish pace of hiring. The monthly employment data can be volatile. During the nearly decade-long recovery from the Great Recession, job growth has sometimes plunged in a single month — to 15,000 in May 2016, for example, and to 18,000 in September 2017 — only to rebound to healthy levels in the months that followed.

And February’s increase in average pay suggests that businesses are stepping up their efforts to attract and keep workers. The yearover-year increase of 3.4 percent in February is up from a corresponding figure of just 2.6 percent a year ago.

Julia Pollak, a labor economist at jobs marketplace ZipRecruiter, said many companies are becoming increasingly hungry for workers. The number of job ads on its site that offer to pay for training, she said, jumped 42 percent last year from 2017. And positions that offer flexible hours soared 110 percent — a trend that could draw more women with family responsibilities off the sidelines and into work.

Carole Witkowski, vice president of human resources at Batteries and Bulbs, said her 700store retail chain has raised starting hourly pay for workers at its distribution center from $11 to $12, with additional raises for those working evening and overnight shifts.

The company has taken other steps, she said: Jobs at the distribution center, located outside Milwaukee, don’t require high school diplomas and have been plagued by high turnover. Many workers can find jobs elsewhere. Others haven’t worked much before and aren’t always used to showing up on time regularly. So about 18 months ago, the company started paying $250 each quarter to workers who arrive on time every day.

And in the suburbs outside Chicago, when the company received no applications in response to retail job postings last winter, it offered a $500 signing bonus. That shook loose some applicants.

“We got a little aggressive there,” Witkowski said.

Nationally, though, the sluggish hiring and job cuts in February were widespread across industries. Construction cut 31,000 jobs, the most in more than five years, likely because

of cold weather. Manufacturing added just 4,000, the fewest in a year and a half, a sign that Trump’s trade war has raised costs and lowered exports for many factories.

Retailers cut 6,100 positions, while jobs in a category that mostly includes restaurants and hotels were unchanged .

The unemployment rate fell despite the tepid pace of hiring. The government uses one survey of households to calculate unemployment and a separate survey of businesses to count job growth, and sometimes the results of the two surveys diverge for a single month.

The jobless rate for African-Americans, which hit a record low of 5.9 percent in May and has frequently been celebrated by President Donald Trump, rose for a third straight month in February to 7 percent, its highest point in more than a year. The rate for Hispanic and Latino Americans, though, dropped to a record low of 4.3 percent.

The overall jobless rate fell partly because thousands of federal workers had been temporarily counted as unemployed in January during the partial government shutdown.

They returned to work and were counted as unemployed in February.

Also on a positive note, the proportion of part-time workers who’d prefer full-time jobs fell sharply. That measure had risen in January

during the shutdown as some furloughed government workers took part-time jobs temporarily. But in February, a gauge of what is called underemployment, which includes part-timers who want full-time work and discouraged people no longer looking for jobs, reached 7.3 percent, the lowest level since 2001.

There are signs that the economy is slowing: Consumer confidence fell sharply in January, held back by the shutdown and by a steep fall in stock prices in December.

And Americans spent less over the winter holidays, with consumer spending plunging in December by the most in five years.

“We are seeing a fading of the effects of the Trump tax cut and increased government spending,” which helped accelerate growth last year, said Sung Won Sohn, chief economist at SS Economics.

Analysts generally foresee growth slowing sharply in the first three months of this year to just a 1 percent annual rate, down from a 2.6 percent rate in the October-December quarter. Still, most expect a rebound in the April-June quarter, and there are already signs of one: Consumer confidence rose in February along with the stock market.

And more Americans signed contracts to buy homes in January, propelled by lower mortgage rates. (ap)

Omed-Omedan Tradition, Originally Held on Nyepi Day

Every celebration of Ngembak Geni, the day after Nyepi, Kaja hamlet, Sesetan, always organizes omed-omedan tradition. This tradition has been held since the kingdom era and remains to be maintained until now. However, there are some changes in the implementation compared to the omed-omedan in the past. to ban the crowds, even wanted to do in the contrary. Starting that day, the omed-omedan was held every year on Nyepi Day. At that time, people have not known the existence of catur brata penyepian (four abstinences) so that omed-omedan was still held on Nyepi Day. Oka Putra added that in line with the development of understanding on religion and interpretation of the Nyepi Day with the catur brata penyepian echoed by the government and Hindu Dharma Council of Indonesia (PHDI), the timing of the tradition was changed. Then, it was moved to the following day right on Ngembak Geni instead of on Nyepi Day. “This happened around the 1980s because in the past people were only abstaining from lighting fire on Nyepi,” he said.

Over time, this tradition got negative assessment from outsiders. People judged the tradition of omed-omedan is synonymous with mass kissing. Due to being angry with the judgment, Ngurah Oka as the heir of the originator of the tradition had banned the implementation of the omed-omedan tradition around the 1984s. “I rejected the false accusation disparaging our residents. Friction of the young people in the omed-omedan may happen, but the point is not the kissing,” he said.

At that time, at the location of the omed-omedan tradition was posted the announcement if the omed-omedan was abolished.

Despite the publication of such announcement, people and audiences kept coming and gathering to meet at the usual venue of the omed-omedan tradition.

After three periods, the tradition was later taken over by sekaa taruna or customary village youth club until now. “In the past, the participants were not just teenagers, but also married people. Padangan explores culinary potential of tabah bamboo shoots

TABANAN - Villages are required to always make innovation to explore their potential in the hope of improving the economy of local community. “So, we don’t add any preservatives because we want to process them purely,” he said.

With the existing village potential, tabah bamboo shoots have begun to be marketed starting from Tabanan to Denpasar at an affordable price of IDR 17,000 per 200 grams. But in order to be able to continue, at this time the Pawon Bali Culinary Group is exploring cooperation with the regional company (Perusda Dharma Santika) so that this Tabanan governmentowned company can buy it. “Now, the market depends on the order so that we have not regularly processed it. He explained that at a glance the processing of bamboo shoots at the time of harvesting must be carried out with special techniques, along with the peeling, sorting and slicing of the shoots. The shoot is taken about 7 centimeters and the rest is carried out at the bottom with easy slicing. Afterwards, the bamboo shoots are boiled and added salt.

The government’s failure to create enough jobs in Asia’s third-biggest economy is a key issue for voters in the polls that are set to take place between April 11 and May 19 with results on May 23.

“I went for 50 job interviews in the last year but with no success. One company I did join laid off most of its staff, bringing me back to square one,” Chowdhary, 27, told AFP. Increasingly desperate, late last year he became one of 23,000 applicants for five government jobs as a “peon” or “office boy” with duties like making tea and photocopying, well below his qualifications.

The shocking figures are not unusual in 1.25-billion-strong India, particularly for secure government jobs with perks that attract hordes of overqualified candidates like Chowdhury. Last year 19 million applied for 63,000 positions at Indian Railways.

- Asian laggard Almost half the workforce toils in agriculture, and although workers are moving to manufacturing and services as the economy modernises, the rate is slower than elsewhere in Asia.

These sectors are not creating enough jobs, hampered by stringent labour laws and insufficient investment in skills training, according to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Another factor is a sharp fall in private investment, resulting in “very little” job creation in the private sector, said Santosh Mehrotra, a professor at Jawaharlal Nehru University.

This lack of investment is caused in part by the “huge crisis” of bad debts at India’s state-owned banks, making them reluctant to lend, Mehrotra told AFP. Red tape and corruption also make buying land for factories difficult, and infrastructure is often poor.

Furthermore India is battling a dearth of decent data on which to base policy, not helped by vast numbers of people working in the shadow, cash-only economy who are

therefore not counted. “(More) than a lack of jobs, the issue is a lack of data on jobs,” Modi said last year.

- Women not working The situation is particularly dire for women. The female workforce participation rate tumbled from 38.7 percent in 2005 to 28.6 percent in 2017, one of the lowest in the world, according to the World Bank.

In the highly status-conscious and patriarchal society, women often give up working once their household income rises. The decline of agriculture, which employs more women, has also had an effect. While India’s universities may produce large numbers of graduates, there is a mismatch with what the labour market requires, and basic education for the poor is patchy. One in eight 14-year-old students in rural India cannot read simple texts, while 56 percent can’t do basic division, a recent survey showed. Millions of children aren’t even in school.

“The sectors which are growing are modern services -- telecom, education, health, banking. This requires a much higher level of education than what is available to youth today,” Mehrotra said. According to an India Today opinion poll published on Monday, unemployment is the biggest issue for voters.

“Education and jobs are two very important topics for the youth. This government has failed on both these fronts,” S. Malik, a student, said at a recent protest in Delhi.

TOKYO - With flowers, silent prayers and tearful tributes, Japan Monday marked the eighth anniversary of a crippling earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster that devastated its northeastern coast and left some 18,500 people dead or missing.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, lawmakers and family members who lost their loved ones in the disaster bowed their heads in prayer at a ceremony in Tokyo at 2:46 pm (0546 GMT) -- the exact moment the magnitude-9.0 quake struck.

“We can’t help but feel sorrow when we think about the suffering of those who lost beloved family members, relatives and friends,” Abe said.

Eight years on, he said reconstruction was making “steady” progress but vowed to continue government support to tens of thousands still struggling in uncomfortable living conditions.

In a constant drizzle, residents in tsunami-hit coastal towns also laid bouquets and bowed their heads as they remembered the moment the waves hit, devastating entire communities in an instant.

According to the National Police Agency, some 18,430 people died or

were missing as a result of the earthquake and tsunami.

In addition, more than 3,700 people -- most of them from Fukushima -- died from illness or suicide linked to the aftermath of the tragedy, according to government data, while more than 51,000 still remain displaced.

Although no-one is officially recorded as having died as a result of radiation from the accident, dozens of reactors across Japan were switched off in the aftermath.

The government has lifted evacuation orders for much of the region affected by the meltdown, except for some no-go zones with high radiation levels.

Authorities are encouraging evacuees to return, but the population in the Fukushima prefecture has more than halved from some two million in the pre-disaster period.

In 97.3 percent of the region “it is possible to lead a normal life”, said reconstruction minister Hiromichi Watanabe -- a claim disputed by NGOs such as Greenpeace.

Around 12,000 people who fled their homes for fear of radiation have filed dozens of lawsuits against the government and the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), the operator of the stricken nuclear plant.

Roughly one in two Japanese voters think the reconstruction of the disaster-hit area “is not making progress” despite the rebuilding of infrastructure such as railways and houses for people who lost their homes in the disaster.

According to the poll, 72.9 percent of voters think the Japanese government should halt its policy of exporting nuclear technology, compared to 14.7 percent who support the policy. (afp)

Human encroachment threatens chimpanzee culture

FROM deep inside chimpanzee territory, the fieldworkers heard loud bangs and shouts.

Hidden video cameras later revealed what the chimps in the Boé region of Guinea-Bissau were up to. Males were throwing rocks at trees and yelling.

Researchers don’t fully understand why the apes engage in this rare behavior, known as accumulative stone throwing. And scientists may not have much time to sort out what’s going on.

All four of Africa’s subspecies of chimpanzees are under threat from deforestation and poaching.

That and other human activity may also be affecting chimp behaviors, including ones that many primatologists view as evidence of chimp culture — behaviors that are learned socially and transmitted through generations, Ammie Kalan and colleagues report online

March 7 in Science. Such traditions as cave dwelling, using sticks to dig for honey and cracking nuts with stones are far less likely to occur in areas most impacted by humans, compared with more remote chimp territories, the team found.

“Everyone thinks that if populations are declining … there would be some loss in the transmission chain that leads to cultural diversity in animals,” says Kalan, of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany. “We’re the first to really show this.”

The group set out to test the disturbance hypothesis put forth

by Carel van Schaik, now of the University of Zurich, in 2002. That hypothesis suggests that disturbances, including population loss, resource depletion and habitat fragmentation, break down the opportunities needed for social learning to occur. By extension, cultural traditions will die out before the species itself. But van Schaik, an orangutan expert, lacked the data to prove his hypothesis.

panzee sites and, with the help of citizen scientists, sifted through millions of one-minute clips to identify thousands of chimp videos. The team also surveyed those chimp sites for feeding remains, signs of tool use and fecal samples to see what the animals were eating.

The researchers next combed through about 450 studies from 1951 to 2017 that documented chimpanzee behavior or culture.

The final analysis included 144 chimpanzee communities and 31 potentially cultural behaviors, such using moss as a sponge, using sticks to fish for algae and, of course, hurtling rocks at trees.

The team then sought to quantify the human impact on each chimp community with data from a collaborative project that uses satellite images to estimate the impact of infrastructure, human population density, forest cover and remoteness. With a resolution of 1 square kilometer and chimp communities typically spanning 25 to 100 square kilometers, those images provide a detailed snapshot of the chimps’ living situations.

That analysis revealed that the 31 chimpanzee behaviors were 88 percent less likely to occur in the areas more affected by human activities compared with the lowest.

Though the findings don’t directly prove that human activity caused a decrease in chimp behavioral diversity, the results support the disturbance hypothesis, says van Schaik, who was not involved in this study.

His own recent work suggests that such behaviors in orangutans appear vital to survival, with the

loss of key individuals leading to rapid losses in skills. “Culture is not the tip of the iceberg for these great apes — some kind of nice luxury — but an intrinsic and essential part of their local adaptation,” he explained in an e-mail.

Now, Kalan, who joined the Max Planck project in 2015, and her colleagues are urging conservationists to create preserves around chimpanzee communities that show unique behaviors. Such chimpanzee cultural heritage sites could protect the chimpanzees’ behavioral diversity, she says.

“Animal culture matters for conservation,” agrees Andrew Whiten, a primatologist at the University of St. Andrews in Fife, Scotland. He’s a coauthor of a study in the March 8 Science that looks at modes of cultural transmission across the animal kingdom — including among chimpanzees, whales, migratory birds and elephants — and the often dire consequences of breaking those knowledge chains.

To date, Kalan’s team has discovered only four chimpanzee communities in West Africa where stone throwing occurs. For now, she can only speculate about the chimps’ motivations. Maybe they’re trying to communicate with other group members through the loud “bang” of the stone against the tree or creating the chimpanzee equivalent of cairns on a hiking trail. Protecting the homes of these and other chimp groups could preserve such behaviors long enough for researchers to find the answers — and for the chimps to go on doing what they do. (net)

Tiny bits of iron may explain why some icebergs are green

WASHINGTO - Scientists may have finally figured out why some icebergs are green. Iron oxides could create the emerald hue.

Icebergs often appear mostly white because light bounces off air bubbles trapped inside the ice. But pure ice — ice without air bubbles that often forms on a berg’s underside — appears blue because it absorbs longer light wavelengths (warm colors like red and orange) and reflects shorter ones (the cooler colors).

Since the 1930s, though, mysterious capsized icebergs with green undersides, nicknamed “jade bergs,” have been spotted around Antarctica.

In the early 1990s, glaciologist Stephen Warren of the University

of Washington in Seattle and his colleagues proposed that the green came from microscopic carbon particles from dead organisms. When integrated into ice, these yellow carbon particles would absorb blue light leaving green to be reflected. Later experiments, though, found that the amount of carbon in green icebergs was too low to create the emerald hue.

“So we were left with this disturbing result,” Warren says.

Then in 2016, researchers discovered iron oxides in a decadesold preserved green ice sample taken from the Amery ice shelf in Antarctica. Iron oxides such as rust reflect reds and oranges but absorb blue light. If these particles, possi-

bly picked up from rocks crushed by the weight and friction of glaciers flowing toward the ocean, get incorporated into ice forming underwater, the result would be a vibrant green, Warren and his colleagues report online February 7 in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans.

Warren hopes to return to Antarctica to collect samples to see if jade bergs are rich in iron. If so, that could both solve a mystery and suggest a previously unknown role for this unusual ice: ferrying a scarce but essential nutrient to the microscopic plankton that the entire ocean food web relies on.

“I don’t know how important [green icebergs] are,” Warren says.

Maintaining heron population at Peh Landfill

PEH Landfill located at Kaliakah village, Negara subdistrict, for the past year has begun to change. Different scenery is seen not only in the landfill area, but also from the entry from DenpasarGilimanuk road section. On the way to the location, a smooth paved road of about 1.5 kilometers is passed with typical rural scenery.

At the surrounding, visitors are showcased with natural view of paddy fields and mountain, including animals commonly encountered in paddy fields such as white heron or storks. In fact, this heron habitat is also very useful for the landfill.

Piles of garbage previously looking like a hill seem to have shrunk since more than a year ago. The garbage used to soar was leveled after the expansion of the active zone. Even though the area has shrunk, the piles are still looming. The zone around the landfill also began to be arranged, so as not to look slum and muddy as ever before. Around the location, precisely along the entrance and the former compost factory has been deliberately greened with ornamental plants maintained by dozens of officers. Most of the landfill attendants are surrounding communities.

“Our task is to keep this active zone in order to stay well maintained. Unlike before, anyone can throw garbage here making it slum and muddy. Now, we are taking advantage of it, so that it becomes completely sorted,” said I Ketut Suardika, one of the landfill attendants.

In addition to garbage trucks carrying garbage from various regions in Jembrana every day, dozens of scavengers are allowed to do activities in the area. They are mostly local residents from around Kaliakah and Banyubiru village and they have a big contribution, especially in sorting the waste.

The landfill operator does not only provide the opportunity for scav-

engers to carry out their activities, but also health insurance from the government.

“All scavengers have health insurance. When having health problems, they can go directly to public health center,” added the man familiarly addressed as Dikok.

Reducing the negative impact of landfill is also one of the tasks of these officers. Every day, they regularly spray the active zones to reduce odors and flies arising from the impact of waste. However, since the landfill officers are on duty, they get some other helpers playing indirect roles namely the white herons.

Since the past two months, the bird population normally living in paddy fields has been increasing.

They are foraging in the rubbish piles. “They eat fly along with its larvae. For us, it is very helpful because it reduces the impact of flies,” added another officer. However, they are worried about the increasing number of these birds as well as many annoying ignorant hands.

Not infrequently, there are individuals making the heron a target for hunting by using air rifles. Actually, the birds are very helpful like what they have done at the largest landfill in Jembrana. “We protect them in this landfill area. But I don’t know when they are outside because this bird does not live here.

But every morning, these flocks of heron throng this location,” said Dikok.

As resident living around the Peh Landfill, he has also proposed to make a perarem or appendix to customary village bylaw for the protection of the bird species.

Therefore, their habitat is well maintained, even if possible increases. Along with other officers, Dikok also wished to plant large trees that later on can be used to make a nest by the herons. According to him, surely it takes time. But most importantly, today the landfill area must be maintained. (olo)

SINGARAJA - A number of residents on behalf of the Kubutambahan Village Observer Community (KPDK) installed a banner on Teletubbies Hill planned to be the location of North Bali International Airport project on Sunday (Mar. 10). The banner installation is alleged to have relation to the utilization plan of the land owned by Kubutambahan customary village on Teletubbies Hill for the airport construction.

As seen in the field, the banner installed was about three times one meter in size. Location of the installation is not far from a stall building crowded with visitors to Teletubbies Hill. On the banner, there is a sign that reads “Awig (bylaw) of Kubutambahan Village in 1990. Article 5: Villagers consists of (1) Residents of Negak village; (2) Residents of Lattan village; and (3) Residents of Sampingan village. Article 23 reads: the Moor Land is the property of the customary village of Kubutambahan covering an area of 415,895 hectares; and Article 25 reads: It is not permitted to sell or ratify customary land, without prior consent from the customary villagers.”

Before installing it, representative of KPDK, Ketut Arcana Dangin, with Gede Kastawan explained at length about the action of installing the banner to the sub-district head of Kubutambahan, Made Suyasa, and chief of Kubutambahan Police, Made Mustida, and pecalang or customary security guard that were present at the airport location. The situation had been tense because the village apparatus did not want the banner installation as alleged to have provocative nuance to the community. Nevertheless, the KPDK representative was then allowed to put up the banner. After being installed for about 15 minutes, the banner was dismantled by pecalang members and police. Having dropped it, the KPDK and related of-

ficials continued the meeting at Desa Temple of Kubutambahan customary village. The meeting was led by chief of Kubutambahan customary village, Jero Pasek Warkadea.

Subdistrict head of Kubutambahan, Made Suyasa, at the meeting suggested the KPDK representatives and customary village to speak heart-to-heart. Moreover, it was just after celebrating Nyepi Day, he invited all the elements to keep the regional situation together so as to be conducive and harmonious. As the head of government in Kubutambahan subdistrict, he is very interested in continuing to maintain conducive conditions.

Head of the KPDK, Ketut Arcana Dangin, stated the banner installation on Teletubbies Hill is meant to be known by the community component.

He ensured there is no personal interest in the installation of the banner, let alone considered be provocateur. On the contrary, the action is carried out because based on his observations so far only few people of Kubutambahan that know about the contents of the awig-awig passed in 1990. “We were established based on agreement with the name of KPDK. It is not intended to be a provocateur, but to monitor the conditions at Kubutambahan village.

We also propose a solution in accordance with the capabilities at hand to policy and interest holders,” he said.

Meanwhile, chief of Kubutambahan customary village, Ketut Warkadea, added the installation

of banners should be done more elegantly and at the right moment.

This happens because the discourse of central government on building the airport is nearing reality. For this reason, the action of installing banner, especially in the location being studied for the location of the airport project, if left unchecked, is worried to result in not good condition in the future.

Meanwhile, related to the content of awig-awig having not yet been known to the public, Warkadea stated the customary village will not sell land to investors wishing to build the airport.

On the contrary, customary village itself will include its assets as capital participation in the airport’s investment. With this pattern, the customary village will get benefits from capital participation as well as another contribution after the airport is built and operated. Regarding the capital participation, Warkadea ensured the government will disseminate it to all the elements of society. For this reason, he welcomed all residents to utilize the opportunity on the dissemination session by asking for explanation regarding the airport project and the land to be utilized.

“What happens is the capital participation of customary village and this will benefit and get protected by the community. Other contributions like the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) will be given if the project already accomplished. Later, another dissemination will be made, so please be attended,” he explained. Price increases significantly, bartender switches to local alcohol

DENPASAR - The price of alcoholic beverages rose significantly by 50 percent – 100 percent in 2018. Actually nearly most or about 60 percent of beverage products made at hotels or bars use alcohol. This price increase makes bartenders, especially in tourism circles, switch to using local alcoholic beverages.

“Nearly more than 60 percent of average sales of drinks at every hotel, bar and restaurant are using alcohol,” said Ketut Darmayasa, Founder and Initiator of Balabec (Bali Local Alcoholic Beverage Control) on Sunday (Mar. 10).

Almost all hotels, restaurants and bars need alcohol to mix their drinks and food. Meanwhile, there are difficulties in getting alcohol following the increase in the basic price of all types of imported alcoholic beverages. They are indeed included in the Negative Invest-

ment List (DNI).

“Once a few years ago, Bali had difficulty in the supply of alcoholic drink, especially imported alcoholic drink because one of the companies importing the alcohol experienced quota reduction,” he said.

Indeed, not all food and drinks at hotels and restaurants use alcohol like fruit juice, mocktail, soft drinks but use the types of cocktails, beer, spirit straight and carbonized spirit. The increase in the price of alcoholic bever-

ages is alleged to because the imquota is reduced to increase export competitiveness.

The need for alcoholic drink is very large for bars, restaurants and discotheques. “If you go to bars or discos without alcoholic drink, it’s like vegetables without salt,” he explained.

Since 1990, wine of local brands has appeared in numbers. However, before the emergence of local branded wine, to meet the needs of wine is imported from France, Australia and the United States.

Bawaslu encounters 10 foreigners registered in DPT Recommended to cross out

TABANAN - The information regarding foreign citizens (WNA) included in the permanent voter list (DPT) for presidential and legislative elections due to their possession of electronic identity card or e-KTP receives direct attention from the Tabanan Electoral Supervisory Board (Bawaslu). As a result, Bawaslu Tabanan found ten foreigners included in the DPT. This finding is different from the data of the Tabanan Electoral Commission (KPU) recording only six foreigners. Bawaslu Tabanan will recommend crossing out the registered foreigners in the DPT.

Head of Bawaslu Tabanan, I Made Rumada, explained that after getting information regarding the presence of foreigners included in the DPT in West Java, his board in Tabanan immediately coordinated with the KPU. “We immediately checked and found ten foreigners having e-KTP and KITAP in Tabanan included in the DPT. We will recommend to the KPU to enter the unqualified voter list (TMS) and be delisted from the DPT,” said Rumada on Sunday (Mar. 10).

Accompanied by members of the Electoral Supervisory Board, I Ketut Narta, Rumada explained that

he continued to conduct DPT checks regarding the presence of foreigners in the DPT. Based on the data of KPU Tabanan, six foreigners were included in the DPT. They are Stefen Alfred Baur, 76, a Swiss citizen living at Bonian hamlet, Antap, Selemadeg; Al Anzai, 46, a Japanese citizen living at Lalanglinggah hamlet, West Selemadeg; Francois Oliver Georces Coudero, 70, a French citizen living at Kalanganyar Kangin hamlet, Sudimara, Tabanan; Mrs. Mendoza Plazaras, 43, a Filipino citizen living at Tunjuk Tengah, Tunjuk, Tabanan; Toshiko Someya, 50, a Japanese citizen living at Batanpoh

Meanwhile, the Chairperson of KPU Tabanan, I Gede Putu Weda Subawa, when asked for his confirmation separately admitted the presence of data on the six foreigners included in the DPT. Reeling from the news, Siti Aisyah’s aunt geared up for a party to welcome back her 27-year-old niece, a year and a half after she went on trial in neighbouring Malaysia with the death penalty hanging over her head.

“Thank God. I want to say a thousand ‘thank you’s’ if it’s really true that she has been freed,” Aisyah’s aunt Darmi, who goes by one name, told AFP. “They should bring her here straight away because she’s not guilty. We’ve heard the news and we’re so happy. We’re getting a celebration ready!

Aisyah’s parents were in the capital Jakarta Monday to await their daughter’s return, after a flurry of diplomatic efforts between the two Southeast Asian neighbours.

The pair had always denied murder, saying they were tricked by North Korean spies into carrying out the Cold War-style hit using VX nerve agent and believed it was a prank for a reality TV show.

The judge unexpectedly agreed to a request at Monday’s hearing to withdraw the murder charge and release Aisyah, although it did not amount to a full acquittal.

Back in Sindangsari, about 100 kilometres (62 miles) west of Jakarta, the family’s neighbour Darsinah recalls watching Aisyah grow up as an “innocent and naive” little girl.

“Never made a fuss. Very obedient and polite,” said the woman, who like many Indonesians goes by one name. “I’m happy, so very happy.” Aisyah herself struggled to imagine that she was going home -- and had escaped a murder conviction that could have led to her hanging execution.

“I had already surrendered myself to God,” she told Indonesia’s Kompas TV in an interview from the Malaysian capital. “It was the support of my family -- my mother, my father -- and the embassy, that kept me going. Now I want to see them.”

Asked if she would ever return to Malaysia, the woman replied: “Who knows -- but I don’t want to be here right now ... I want to stay in Indonesia.” (afp)

Lopez and Rodriguez confirmed on Instagram late Saturday that they are engaged.

Both posted a picture of their hands at sunset, with Lopez’s enormous diamond ring.

While the multi-hyphenate singer-actress-dancer-producer only captioned the pic with heart emojis, Rodriguez went a bit farther, writing in lower-case letters: “she said yes.”

Lopez, 49, and Rodriguez, 43, have been a couple for about two years.

Lopez, currently the executive producer and judge on NBC reality dance competition show “World of Dance,” is set to go on tour later this year across North America. She wrapped up a Vegas residency in 2018.

She has been married three times: to Ojani Noa, back-up dancer Cris Judd, and singer Marc Anthony, with whom she has 11-year-old twins.

She also had a high-profile relationship with actor Ben Affleck.

Rodriguez retired from Major League Baseball in 2016, after a lengthy career, mostly with the New York Yankees. He won one World Series title with the Yankees and was an All-Star 14 times.

His achievements were tarnished by his admission that he used performance-enhancing drugs.

He was suspended for the entire 2014 season.

Rodriguez currently works as an on-air baseball analyst. He has been married once. He and ex-wife Cynthia Scurtis have two daughters.
