Hugh Jackman prepared heavier Australian accent for new film

Iran marks Islamic Revolution anniversary amid nuclear talks Page 6

NEW YORK — It’s not that often that Hugh Jackman gets a role speaking in his native Australian accent, so while working on the upcoming science-fiction thriller “Chappie” he had to get reacquainted with the dialect. The 46-year old Tony Award winner told The Associated Press on Tuesday that using his own accent “was great but weird.” “I had to practice it because it was way stronger than my natural accent,” Jackman said. Jackman also admits brushing up on some of the Australian slang that writer-director Neill Blomkamp wrote for the part. “He used a lot of phrases, and I had to end up Googling the slang,” Jackman said. “Neill was coming up with some really cool sayings. ... I was trying to think of more, so I ended up Googling some of them.”

“Chappie,” which opens in theaters on March 6, tells the story of a fallen police robot that is reprogrammed to think and feel for itself. Jackman said he had fun playing the film’s antagonist, an engineer strongly opposed to artificial intelligence. “We got to create this character that did stretch it a bit. We had a lot of fun with him from the look, his mannerism, the way he talked. At the same time, it was very much based in a reality that was needed for the movie in terms of the voice of caution,” Jackman said. Blomkamp is known for his science-fiction thrillers “District 9” and

“Elysium.” The last time Jackman appeared in a film using his native accent was in “Australia” in 2008, opposite Nicole Kidman. He did lend his voice to the 2012 animated film “Rise of the Guardians.” Jackman, who just finished a Broadway run in the Jez Butterworth play “The River,” says he will hit the stage again next month. “My one-man show I did here on Broadway a few years back, I’m going to do in Turkey. I’m very excited about that,” he said. He added: “It should be fun. We’ll see how the Turks like it.” (ap)

Curious? The posters for “Fifty Shades of Grey” coyly ask. Whether or not you’re one of the 100 million who bought, and presumably read, E L James’ kinky book, the buzz alone surrounding this “Twilight” fan fiction turned international phenomenon is enough to pique the interest of a rock. “Fifty Shades of Grey” is inherently spectacle.

be appealing on a mass scale. In trying to please everyone, though, “Fifty Shades of Grey” has stripped away the fun and settled on palatable. There have been perfume commercials with more depth and story arc. For the uninitiated, “Fifty Shades of Grey” is about lit student Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson) and her torrid affair with 27-year-old billionaire Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan). They meet on a lark, when her aspiring journalist roommate gets ill and Anastasia agrees to help out by subbing in to interview the handsome mogul. The two are made to look as mismatched as possible. She’s a clumsy innocent with a childish ponytail in tights and a cardigan, he looks like he’s just stepped out of an ad for bespoke suits and new money pretention. We’re supposed to believe that sparks fly immediately, but this first meeting conjures up the dynamic of a predator and a scared feral animal more than anything else. Still, something snaps in Christian and he decides he must have her as his own. He starts popping up

everywhere, from the hardware store where she works to the college bar where she’s had a bit too much to drink to save her from a handsy friend. Soon he’s whisking Ana (Ms. Steele as he calls her) away on his helicopter to a garish bachelor’s pad/ penthouse apartment, wooing her with white wine (but not too much, as he constantly reminds her), domineering gazes, and antiquated formalities. Laughable sexual innuendo peppers all their conversations. But instead of the will-they-won’tthey tension that even the silliest sitcom can pull off effectively, the unfortunate consequence is that the nearly 40 minutes that it takes for Christian and Ana to go under the sheets almost seem more gratuitous than anything that happens in the Red Room of Pain. Also, after the sex starts, so do the exhaustive and dull contract negotiations. The chemistry between Johnson and Dornan is decent, even if they do seem to be acting in different movies. Dornan’s Christian is a humorless caricature, while Johnson’s Ana is actually

2,000 drug addicts targeted for rehabilitation

DENPASAR – Efforts to reduce drug trafficking in Denpasar, have not been very effective so from drugs”, said Budiartha. The government should take far and in fact the drug problem has become even more widespread. The most worrisome aspect the position that the addicts are is that illegal drugs have been reaching the younger generation of this island.

Review: Fifty Shades of dissatisfaction

With all that irresistible anticipation, how could a movie about BDSM be so run of the mill? The short answer: fear and money. It’s one thing to read about the bondage-enabled sexual awakening of a virgin. It’s quite another to see it depicted on screen. Director Sam Taylor-Johnson had an impossible mission on her hands to meld the tawdry with the conventional. It’s like trying to mash up the sensibilities of Lars von Trier with Nancy Meyers to create an end product that will

quite likable, funny and strong-willed. In a film full of flaws, Johnson is an undeniable bright spot. A lot has been made about what the popularity of James’s book says about American women and their sexual fantasies. On screen, that conversation makes even less sense. Fans hunger-

ing for less conventional depictions of sex haven’t been looking hard enough — non-pornographic sex is not unchartered territory in cinema, or even television for that matter. There is more scintillating material in a premium HBO show than in this version of E L James’s book. (ap)

Various attempts have been made, both by the police and by the Bali Narcotic Agency (BNNP Bali) to address this issue. Unfortunately, these attempts have not been successful in reducing the circulation of these illicit substances. “Even, President Jokowi considers Indonesia to be in an urgent situation regarding illegal drugs, due to the high rate of drug addiction found here. The President has asked the Head of the BNN to rehabilitate 400,000 addicts in Indonesia throughout 2015. However, the

Head of the BNN can only reach 100,000 addicts”, said the Head of the BNNP Bali, I Gusti Ketut Budiartha. Budiartha said they are aiming to rehabilatate 2,000 addicts in Bali this year as a way to reduce the demand for drugs on the island. To reach this target, his party plans to take advantage of facilities provided by the educationa center for military and police, county or municipality hospitals, mental hospitals and public health centers to be used as rehabilitation centers.

“These places will be utilized as a rehabilitation centera for the addicts”, he stated. Budiartha accompanied by Prevention Division Head, Ni Luh Ketut Lisdiani, revealed that 90 percent of addicts are productive aged people, with teenage addicts accounting for 40 percent of all addicts in Bali. “It is not a huge number but if the situation is not addressed the numbers will continue to rise. It is a good time for teachers to play the important role of reminding students to stay away

victims or sick people. Therefore, the rehabilitation effort should be encouraged. Otherwise, the number of drug addicts will surely skyrocket. Moreover, new substances or types of drugs continue to be created. “Arrests, raids and prevention measures should be aggressively carried out. Pharmacists continue to innovate new kinds of drugs. The resulting losses both material and mental of those who encounter these substance, is very considerable”, said this one-star general from Tabanan. In Indonesia, he continued, the number of victims who die as a

result of drugs is about 41 to 50 people every day. Meanwhile, material losses reach into the trillions of rupiahs. The impact of drugs, he added, was more horrific than that of terrorists because every day dozens of people die from drugs. Without serious treatment, Bali will lose a whole generation “People are reluctant to report drug issues. If their children or relative come into contact with drugs they are even protected or hidden from authorities. In fact, this is not the right reaction. If you know of someone afflicted by drugs, please immediately report it to the nearest BNN office so that immediate action can be taken”, said Budiartha. (rah)
