CALIFORNIA - Donald Trump called Meryl Streep an “overrated actress” on Monday after the three-time Oscar winner publicly criticized him for having belittled a disabled journalist.

Without naming the presidentelect, Streep, the most admired U.S. actress of her generation, assailed him while giving a lifetime achievement acceptance speech at Sunday night’s Golden Globe awards. Her speech received more than a million YouTube views. In it, Streep recalled her dismay at Trump’s imitation of Serge Kovaleski, a disabled New York Times reporter, during the 2016 election campaign.

“This instinct to humiliate when it’s modeled by someone in the public platform by someone powerful, it filters down into everybody’s life,”

Trump on Monday tweeted that Streep was “one of the most overrated actresses in Hollywood.” His comment sparked a top trending Twitter hashtag #ThingsTrumpThinksAreOverrated with users suggesting other issues he had similarly dismissed.

CHICAGO - With a final call of his campaign mantra “Yes We Can,” President Barack Obama urged Americans on Tuesday to stand up for U.S. values and reject discrimination as the United States transitions to the presidency of Republican Donald Trump.

In an emotional speech in which he thanked his family and declared his time as president the honor of his life, Obama gently prodded the public to embrace his vision of progress while repudiating some of the policies that Trump promoted during his campaign for the White House.

“So just as we, as citizens, must remain vigilant against external aggression, we must guard against a weakening of the values that make us who we are,” Obama told a crowd of 18,000 in his hometown of Chicago, where he celebrated his election in 2008 as the first black president of the United States.

Trump, who takes office on Jan. 20, proposed temporarily banning Muslims from entering the coun-

try, building a wall on the border with Mexico, upending a global deal to fight climate change and dismantling Obama’s healthcare reform law.

Obama made clear his opposition to those positions during fiery campaign speeches for 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, but has struck a more conciliatory tone with Trump since the election.

In his farewell speech, he made clear his positions had not changed and he said his efforts to end the use of torture and close the U.S. prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, were part of a broader move to uphold U.S. values.

“That’s why I reject discrimina-

tion against Muslim Americans,” he said in a clear reference to Trump that drew applause. He said bold action was needed to fight global warming and said “science and reason” mattered.

“If anyone can put together a plan that is demonstrably better than the improvements we’ve made to our healthcare system, that covers as many people at less cost, I will publicly support it,” he said in another prodding challenge to his successor. Trump has urged the Republican-controlled Congress to repeal the law right away.

RACE AND NOSTALGIA Obama, who came to office amid high expectations that his election would heal historic racial divides, acknowledged that was an impossible goal.

“After my election, there was talk of a post-racial America,” he said. “Such a vision, however well-

intended, was never realistic. Race remains a potent and often divisive force in our society.”

However, Obama said he remained hopeful about the work that a younger generation would do. “Yes we can,” he said. “Yes we did.”

He said that Bali experiences crisis of native entrepreneurs because Bali is too much pampered by the propagandas of accelerated growth relying solely upon tourism sector. Actually, beyond it there remain a lot of potentials and uniqueness owned

by Bali that has not been targeted in the field.

“Human Resources (HR) of Bali must intelligently observe the potential. Balinese cuisines and alcoholic beverage production yielded by Balinese residents could become prospective industry managed professionally,” he advised.

Balinese people have to love their own cuisine treasures. We can adopt Japanese culture and build resilience of local entrepreneurs. This should be educated.

revival of local economy,” he advised.

He hoped that all the components in Bali move in single integrated policy if wishing to make young people of Bali have entrepreneurship mentality. Campus, government and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) can participate in preparing the field for younger generation of Bali to become a host of Bali Island.

“Rise up to overcome famine in the native entrepreneurs should be supported by all elements. This is the benchmark of the independence for Bali in the future,” he said.

In the meantime, administrator of the Real Estate Indonesia (REI) of Bali Chapter, Gede Putra Semadi, said that to become working generation, Balinese people must perform various innovative measures. Capital, according to him, is not the main reason to be afraid of competing.

Today, many entrepreneurs grow because of their creative and innovative measures.

“The opportunity for Bali younger generation to become entrepreneurs is very open. Now, it just needs the way how to manage the existing opportunities,” he advised.

He reminded that Bali must become beneficial investment area for Balinese people. “I think the regulations have been nurturing it. The problem is that the implementation at local level is not yet clear and effective. To that end, the younger generation of Bali must dare to make extraordinary measures in order to become a host to the land in Bali. (dir)

Japanese traveler experiences theft at hotel

MANGUPURA - A Japanese traveler, Yamada Mayumi, 49, reported a loss of JPY 43,000, put in the room of Hotel Aquarius Star on Jalan Legian, on Monday (Jan. 9). The culprit is no other than the hotel employee named Esa Tirtanaya, 19, so that he was immediately taken to Kuta Police Station.

Chief of Kuta Police, Wayan Sumara, said on Tuesday (Jan.

10) that the victim stayed in room 303. Initially her money worth JPY 43,000 was placed on the bed. After that, the victim went out of the room for breakfast. When returning to the room, in fact her money already disappeared and the incident was then reported to police station.

Based on the report, a team led

by Kuta Criminal Investigation Unit Budiartama conducted a

crime scene investigation. Results of the investigation led to the hotel employee because there were no damages found in the room.

“We checked the hotel employees who were on duty at the time, where one of them is the perpetrator. When questioned, initially the perpetrator avoided, but after his confession was deepened he finally admitted,” he said.

The suspect from Rogojampi,

Banyuwangi, East Java, admitted that he first came into the victim’s room by using a master key that was taken at the hotel reception.

After that, the perpetrator pretended to check the completeness of the room. “The perpetrator knocked at the door of hotel room in advance. Since there is no response from the guest, the perpetrator came into the room by using a master key,” he said.

The victim’s money was then taken and exchanged at money changer and he obtained IDR 4.5 million. “The evidence is still intact because this case was quickly revealed. The incident clearly tarnished the image of Bali tourism. We hope employees of hotel and other establishments in Kuta to jointly maintain the security and not vice versa,” said Sumara. (kmb36)

Men who eat lots of red meat have higher risk for common bowel disease

BOSTON - A new study suggests that men who eat lots of red meat are much more likely to have bowel problems, pain and nausea than their peers who stick mainly with chicken or fish.

Researchers examined more than two decades of data on more than 46,000 men and found frequent red meat eaters were 58 percent more likely to be diagnosed with diverticulitis, a common bowel condition that occurs when small pockets or bulges lining the intestines become inflamed.

“Previous studies have shown that a high fiber diet is associated with a lower risk of diverticulitis, however, the role of other dietary factors in influencing risk of diverticulitis was not well studied,” said senior study author Andrew Chan, a researcher at Harvard University and Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

“Our result show that diets high in red meat may be associated with a higher risk of diverticulitis,” Chan added by email.

Diverticulitis is common, resulting in more than 200,000 hospitalizations a year in the U.S. at a cost of more than $2 billion, Chan and colleagues note in the journal Gut. New cases are on the rise, and the exact causes are unknown, although the condition has been linked to smoking, obesity and the use of certain nonprescription painkillers known as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

While diverticulitis can often be treated with a liquid or low-fiber diet, severe cases may require hospitalization and surgery to fix complications like

perforations in the gut wall.

Researchers examined data collected on men who were aged 40 to 75 when they joined the study between 1986 and 2012. Every four years men were asked how often, on average, they ate red meat, poultry and fish over the preceding year.

They were given nine options, ranging from ‘never’ or ‘less than once a month,’ to ‘six or more times a day.’

During the study period, 764 men developed diverticulitis.

Men who ate the most red meat were also more likely to smoke, more likely to regularly take NSAIDs, and less likely to eat foods with fiber or get intense exercise.

By contrast, men who ate more chicken and fish were less likely to smoke or take NSAIDs and more likely to get vigorous exercise.

After accounting for these other factors that can influence the risk of diverticulitis, red meat was still associated with higher odds of developing the bowel disorder.

Each daily serving of red meat was associated with an 18 percent increased risk, the study found.

Unprocessed meats like beef, pork and lamb were associated with a greater risk than processed meats like bacon or sausage.

It’s possible the higher cooking temperatures typically used to prepare unprocessed meats may influence the composition of bacteria in the gut or inflammatory activity, though the exact reason for the increased risk tied to these foods is unknown, the researchers note. (rtr)

About 76 percent of mothers said they took vitamin D themselves, and most of them preferred daily supplements to longer-acting versions taken less often. Overall, nearly nine in 10 women said they would prefer to take supplements themselves rather than give drops to their babies.

Women who didn’t give babies vitamin D most often cited safety concerns, the survey found.

One limitation of the study is that it included mostly white mothers, and the findings might not apply to women of other racial or ethnic groups or with a high risk of vitamin D deficiency, the authors note in the Annals of Family Medicine.

Still, the findings highlight the need to educate new parents about vitamin D and make sure breastfeeding mothers take supplements themselves or give babies drops, said Dr. Lydia Furman, a researcher at Case Western Reserve University and Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio.

“Infants can only receive adequate vitamin D if their mothers receive adequate vitamin D and thus there is adequate vitamin D in their breast milk, or if they are supplemented,” Furman, who wasn’t involved in the study, said by email. Some infant formulas may contain enough vitamin D to make drops unnecessary. But babies who consume both breast milk and formula may not get enough vitamin D and still need drops or mothers who take supplements.

Breastfed babies still need extra vitamin D

MANY breastfed infants may not get enough vitamin D because their mothers prefer not to give babies supplement drops, a study suggests.

Pediatricians recommend that mothers exclusively breastfeed infants until at least six months of age because it can reduce babies’ risk of ear and respiratory infections, sudden infant death syndrome, allergies, childhood obesity and diabetes.

Because breast milk typically doesn’t contain enough vitamin D to help infants develop healthy bones, the American Academy of Pediatrics advises nursing mothers to give their babies daily supplements of 400 IU (international units) of vitamin D. As an alternative, women can take vitamin D supplements themselves – typically 4,000 to 6,000 IU daily – to give babies enough in breast milk so that drops aren’t needed.

The research team surveyed 184 breastfeeding mothers, including 44 mothers who also gave their babies formula in addition to breast milk.

Altogether, just 55 percent of the women said they gave their babies vitamin D drops and only 42 percent supplemented with the recommended 400 IU. “Many mothers were not aware of the need for vitamin D supplementation or their physician had not recommended supplementation,” said senior study author Dr. Tom Thacher, a researcher at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

“Others believed that breast milk had all the needed nutrition, and some mentioned the inconvenience of giving a supplement or their poor experience of giving a supplement to previous children,” Thacher added by email.

Head of LHK Badung, Putu Eka Merthawan, stated that in the future his agency seeks to make the handling by quick service with the requirements that all the heavy equipment needs have been met. “We need three loaders per location, two suction machines and two trucks per location with 15 personnel,” he detailed.

With the addition of heavy equipment and personnel, Eka Merthawan is optimistic there will be no longer accumulation of waste along the beaches in Badung. “Collection and transportation of the waste is carried out by different officers. The trucks used are special for transporting marine debris, not the trucks commonly used for services on the road,” he concluded. (kmb27)

Alstar-B demands to block online taxi

Transportation Agency Head promises to give response next April

DENPASAR - Hundreds of taxi drivers coalesced into the members of the Alliance of Bali Transport Driver (Alstar-B) came again to rally to the office of the governor of Bali, on Tuesday (Jan. 10). Prior to coming to the governor’s office, they first took action at the north of Dewa Ruci roundabouts.

The demand of the Alstar-B remains the same, namely asking the government to block the online application-based taxi services. In this case, they include Grab and Uber Taxi.

Alstar-B was received by the Head of Bali Transportation Agency I Gusti Agung Ngurah Sudarsana as well as the Head of Bali Infocom and Statistics Agency I Nyoman Sujaya in front of the office of the Bali governor. Responding to the demand of the Alstar-B, the Head of the Bali Transportation Agency I Gusti Agung Ngurah Sudarsana promised to give response until April.

It is the end of the extension period of the dissemination for the Regulation of the Minister of Transportation No.32/2016 on the Implementation of Human Passenger with Non-Route Vehicle (Ministerial Regulation No. 32—Ed) made since last October 2016.

“We’ve been preparing some things related to the dissemination. Nevertheless, your presence reminds us of always knowing the progress of the online taxi. We will remain to hold your commitment until April in accordance with the order of the Minister of Transportation to do dissemination,” he stated that was responded with dissatisfaction of the demonstrators.

Nevertheless, Sudarsana still invited the demonstrators to come together and agree on it. On the other hand, this official said that his agency has performed judicial action for four times during last December.

Myanmar’s Suu Kyi sends envoy to Bangladesh as Rohingya crisis deepens

YANGON - A special envoy of Myanmar’s leader Aung San Suu Kyi will begin top-level talks in Bangladesh on Wednesday, as the United Nations said the Rohingya crisis prompted 65,000 people to flee Myanmar for Bangladesh in the past three months.

Kyaw Tin, Myanmar’s deputy minister of foreign affairs, will make a three-day visit to the Bangladeshi capital of Dhaka, in a rare diplomatic foray to tackle the biggest challenge facing Nobel Peace laureate Suu Kyi’s nine-month old administration.

The stream of new refugees, and reports that Myanmar’s navy has shot at Bangladeshi fishermen, have further tested historically strained ties between the neighbours, who each see the stateless Rohingya Muslims as the other side’s problem.

The visit marks a shift away from Myanmar’s reluctant approach to cooperation with its western neighbour, which analysts see as key to solving the growing crisis.

Rohingya insurgents attacked Myanmar border posts on Oct. 9, killing nine police. In response Myanmar sent the army into the Muslim-majority northern part of Rakhine State.

Residents and refugees have described summary executions, arbitrary arrests and rape in the operation. Suu Kyi’s government has denied almost all abuse allegations.

During the visit, the neighbours will discuss bilateral relations, but the Myanmar side was unlikely to bring up the “complicated” issue of border security, said Aye Aye Soe, deputy director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

On the same day, at least another 14 people were killed and dozens injured in separate incidents in the volatile southern provinces of Helmand and Kandahar.

The Islamist militant Afghan Taliban movement, which immediately claimed responsibility for the Kabul attack, said its target had been a minibus carrying staff from the National Directorate of Security (NDS), Afghanistan’s main intelligence agency.

It put the casualties at more than 70 and said they were all members of the security forces.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said a suicide bomber attacked the minibus in the Darul Aman area, and was followed almost immediately by a car bomber, who killed security forces attending the scene.

“We planned this attack for quite some time and the plan was target some senior officers of the intelligence agency. We sent one suicide bomber to target a mini bus that was carrying these officers,” he said. “We did exactly what we planned.”

One witness, Sajadullah Khan, said he saw numerous wounded people lying on the ground after the explosion which he said “totally burned out” the minibus.

President Ashraf Ghani condemned the “criminal” attacks and vowed the perpe-

trators would not be safe anywhere in the country.

“The Taliban shamelessly claim credit for the attack on civilians and they’re proud of it,” he said in a statement.

AMBASSADOR WOUNDED The attack underlined the security threat posed by Islamist militants fighting to topple the Afghan government and drive out foreign troops stationed there for the last 15 years.

Hours after the Kabul incident, at least seven people were killed and 18 wounded in an explosion in the southern city of Kandahar. There was no immediate claim of responsibility. Among the wounded were the provincial governor and the United Arab Emirates ambassador, officials said.

Afghan armed forces control no more than two thirds of national territory, and have struggled to contain the Taliban insurgency since the bulk of NATO soldiers withdrew at the end of 2014.

Several thousand, mainly Americans, remain in training and counter-terrorism roles.

Asia shares recover losses, markets await Trump news conference

TOKYO - Asian shares rose to two-month highs on Wednesday as investors looked to President-elect Donald Trump’s news conference later in the day for clues on his policies on taxes, fiscal spending, international trade and currencies.

While Trump’s election campaign calls for tax cuts and more infrastructure spending have boosted U.S. shares and the dollar, his protectionist statements and a flurry of off-the-cuff Tweets have kept many investors on edge. European shares are expected to open slightly lower after Tuesday’s gains, with spread-betters seeing Britain’s FTSE and Germany’s DAX falling 0.1 percent.

MSCI’s broadest index of AsiaPacific shares outside Japan rose 0.5 percent, essentially returning to where it was just before the Nov. 8 U.S. presidential election. It has recovered from post-election losses of over 5 percent. The gains were led by South Korean shares, which scaled a 1-1/2year peak as Samsung Electronic, Asia’s biggest company by market cap, hit a record high, cheered by solid earnings published last week.

Japan’s Nikkei ticked up 0.4 percent, snapping three days of losses.

On Wall Street, the S&P 500 ended flat on Tuesday as investors looked to the start of the earnings season this week to assess if record market levels are justified, following a 5 percent gain since the election.

“There are underlying expectations that Trump’s tax cuts and infrastructure spending will boost the U.S. economy, which should support markets,” said Masahiro Ichikawa, senior strategist at Sumitomo Mitsui

Asset Management.

“On the other hand, if he takes a hard line stance on China in line with his campaign promises, then China would probably take countermeasures, raising concerns about tensions between the U.S. and China,” he added.

Trump has vowed to label China a currency manipulator on his first day in office on Jan. 20 and has threatened to slap huge tariffs on imports from China. U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Paul Ryan and top members of President-elect Donald Trump’s transition team are discussing a controversial plan to tax imports.

Economists have warned that protectionist measures could stifle international trade and hurt global growth. The Mexican peso is taking the brunt of such concerns, hitting a record low on Tuesday.

Trump has attacked automakers for building vehicles in Mexico for export to the United States, forcing some of them to consider changing their investment plans in Mexico.

Taiwan scrambles jets, navy as China aircraft carrier enters Taiwan Strait

TAIPEI - Taiwan scrambled jets and navy ships on Wednesday as a group of Chinese warships led by China’s sole aircraft carrier sailed north through the Taiwan Strait, the latest sign of heightened tensions between Beijing and the self-ruled Taiwan.

The Soviet-built Liaoning aircraft carrier, returning from exercises in the South China Sea, was not trespassing in Taiwan’s territorial waters but entered its air defence identification zone (ADIZ) in the southwest, Taiwan’s defence ministry said.

As a result Taiwan scrambled jets and navy ships to “surveil and control” the passage of the Chinese ships through the narrow body of water separating Taiwan and China, Taiwan defence ministry spokesman Chen Chung-chi said.

Taiwanese military aircraft and ships have been deployed to follow the carrier group, which is sailing up the west side of the median line of the strait, he said.

Taiwan’s top policymaker for China affairs on Wednesday urged Beijing to resume dialogue with Taipei, after official communication channels were halted by Beijing from June.

“I want to emphasise our government has sufficient capability to protect our national security. It’s not necessary to overly panic,” said Chang Hsiao-yueh, minister for Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council, during a news briefing in response to reporters’ questions on the Liaoning’s movements.

“On the other hand, any threats would not benefit cross-Strait ties,” she said.

U.S. says might not shoot down North Korean ICBM, eying intel

WASHINGTON - The U.S. military might monitor a North Korean intercontinental ballistic missile test and gather intelligence rather than destroy it, as long as the launch did not pose a threat, Defense Secretary Ash Carter said on Tuesday.

North Korea declared on Sunday it could test-launch an ICBM at any time from any location set by leader Kim Jong Un, saying a hostile U.S. policy was to blame for its arms development.

“If the missile is threatening, it will be intercepted. If it’s not threatening, we won’t necessarily do so,” Carter said in his final news briefing before President Barack Obama’s administration leaves office on Jan. 20.

“Because it may be more to our advantage to, first of all, save our interceptor inventory, and, second, to gather intelligence from the flight, rather than do that (intercept the ICBM) when it’s not threatening.”

The top U.S. military officer, Marine General Joseph Dunford, who will stay in his role as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, concurred with Carter at the event but did not enter into specifics.

Carter’s language left open the possibility of U.S. military action in any scenario.

Carter’s remarks came just over a week after U.S. President-elect Donald Trump vowed that North Korea would never fulfill its threat to test an ICBM. Trump said in a Jan. 2 tweet: “It won’t happen!”

Preventing an ICBM test is far easier said than done, and Trump has given no indication of how he might roll back North Korea’s weapons programs after he takes office, something successive U.S. administrations, both Democratic and Republican, have failed to do.

A 2016 assessment released by the Pentagon’s weapons testing office on Tuesday said that U.S. ground-based interceptors meant to knock out any incoming ICBM still had low reliability, giving the system itself a limited capability of shielding the United States.

Once fully developed, a North Korean ICBM could threaten the continental United States, which is around 9,000 km (5,500 miles) from the North. ICBMs have a minimum range of about 5,500 km (3,400 miles), but some are designed to travel 10,000 km (6,200 miles) or farther.

Former U.S. officials and other experts have said the United States essentially had two options when it came to trying to curb North Korea’s fast-expanding nuclear and missile programs - negotiate or take military action.

Neither path offers certain success and the military option is fraught with huge dangers, especially for Japan and South Korea, U.S. allies in close proximity to North Korea.

Indonesia’s president moves to rein in “out of control” military chief

JAKARTA - Indonesia’s President Joko Widodo reproached his military chief in a meeting last week amid concerns the commander was “out of control” after he unilaterally suspended defence cooperation with Australia, two sources briefed on the meeting said.

Widodo’s intervention highlights alarm about General Gatot Nurmantyo, who promotes the notion that Indonesia is besieged by “proxy wars”, in which foreign states seek to undermine the nation by manipulating non-state actors.

Analysts and some of Widodo’s aides are also concerned that Nurmantyo is laying the groundwork for an expansion of the military’s role in civilian affairs in the world’s third-largest democracy and may have political ambitions himself.

Widodo, the first president from outside the military and political establishment, needed to move quickly to demonstrate his authority as the country’s commander-in-chief, one senior government official said.

“With Gatot, the feeling is like he’s a little out of control,” he said.

Nurmantyo declared a rupture in military ties after an Indonesian officer found “offensive” teaching material while on a language training course in Australia late last year. The material suggested that Indonesia’s Papua province should be independent and mocked the nation’s state ideology, Pancasila, according to Nurmantyo.

CAUGHT OFF GUARD

One of the officials told Reuters Widodo and others in the govern-

ment were caught off guard when local media reported Nurmantyo’s announcement of the suspension in military ties with Australia.

While the general was not formally reprimanded, the official said, Widodo served him a warning during a meeting at a presidential palace in Bogor, outside Jakarta.

The meeting was confirmed by another senior government aide, who also spoke on condition of anonymity.

Nurmantyo declined requests to be interviewed and a military spokesman declined to comment on the meeting. The senior government official said: “We suspect that Gatot is exploiting this incident for his own political agenda, his own political ambition.”

“He has been making many public appearances and speeches lately,” he said. “Frankly, we think many of them about proxy wars and the threat to Indonesia are absolutely ridiculous.”

In one speech, Nurmantyo predicted that a food shortage in China could trigger a flood of boat-borne refugees. He told listeners he would slaughter 10 cows and dump them into the sea to attract sharks that would devour the Chinese.

One of the officials who disclosed Widodo’s meeting with Nurmantyo said the military chief’s job was safe, downplaying speculation that the general would be relieved of his duties.

“For now, we are confident that he will not betray the president or the civilian government,” he said.(rtr)

The announcements by the Department of State and Treasury Department come after police in Australia and Indonesia foiled IS-inspired attacks planned for the holiday season in those countries.

The State Department said Tuesday it has designated the IS-affiliated Jamaah Ansharut Daulah as a terrorist group, which in practice prohibits U.S. citizens being involved with it and enables the freezing of any property in the U.S. JAD militants are believed responsible for a January 2016 attack in the Indonesian capital that killed eight people including the attackers.

Treasury announced sanctions against two Australians, both previously believed killed in the Middle East, and two Indonesians, one of whom is in prison in Indonesia.

The statements did not say whether the four had any assets within U.S.

‘Miracle Man’ Jacobs to challenge unbeaten Golovkin

NEW YORK - Undefeated middleweight slugger Gennady Golovkin will put four world championship belts on the line March 18 against WBA champion Daniel Jacobs, who said on Tuesday that he relished another chance to beat the odds.

Golovkin of Kazakhstan is 36-0 with 33 knockouts but Jacobs, known as “The Miracle Man” after winning his battle with bone cancer, is keen for the Madison Square Garden clash.

“The creator has positioned my life to be an inspiration to so many people throughout the world. So many people are affected by cancer,” Brooklyn’s Jacobs told reporters.

“The fact that I can overcome ... winning this fight will take everything to the next level.”

While Golovkin, with knockout power in both hands, has been invincible, Jacobs has earned respect for his courage and perseverance as well as for pugilistic skills that have led to a 32-1 record with 29 stoppages.

In May 2011, Jacobs was diagnosed with a form of bone cancer and was left partially paralyzed. After radiation treatments, surgery to remove a tumor wrapped around his spine and arduous rehabilitation, he returned to boxing in late 2012.

Two years later, Jacobs stopped Jarrod Fletcher in five rounds to win the WBA middleweight title, and has finished off his last dozen opponents within the distance.

Jacobs, who combines power with elite boxing skills, may give 34-year-old Golovkin his toughest test.

“I believe Dan is ready for this fight.

This is his dream. A dream for everybody,” said Golovkin, who voiced respect for Jacobs. “For us, it will decide who is number one, who is the best. I promise an amazing show.”

Said Golovkin trainer Abel Sanchez: “I would say he is probably the best fighter we’ve fought to date. Great right hand, good boxing knowledge, good boxing IQ.” Andre Dozier, Jacobs’ trainer, said his fighter would be up to the task. “He has fought the hardest fight he could ever have, in life. Everything after that has been a walk in the park because he fears no man.”

DeRozan scores 41 as Raptors top Celtics

TORONTO - DeMar DeRozan led the way with a 41 points as the Toronto Raptors avoided a third straight loss, defeating the Boston Celtics 114-106 on Tuesday.

The Raptors (25-13) closed out the fourth quarter on a 19-4 run to pick up their third consecutive home victory over Boston. The Celtics (23-15) saw their four-game winning streak end.

Raptors center Jonas Valanciunas added a career-high 23 rebounds and 18 points. Kyle Lowry chipped in with 24 points, nine assists and four rebounds in the win.

DeRozan also stepped up and collected 13 rebounds, including 11 defensive boards.

“He’s a tough kid,” Raptors coach Dwane Casey said. “More than anything else, the 41 points is nice, but 13 rebounds, the 11 defensive rebounds when we needed it.

“DeMar came in and got some big rebounds, tough rebounds, so that was impressive. That was more of a sign of grit and grind as much as the 41 points.”

Isaiah Thomas led the Celtics with 27 points and seven assists. Guard Marcus Smart contributed 16 points, five assists, four rebounds and four steals.

Gerald Green and Al Horford added 14 points apiece for Boston, and Kelly Olynyk chipped in with 13 points.

BOLIVIA - Sebastien Loeb won the eighth stage of the Dakar Rally and recaptured the lead from Peugeot team mate Stephane Peterhansel on Tuesday as the Frenchmen led the field back into Argentina from Bolivia.

The timed element of the stage from the high plains of Uyuni down to Salta was again shortened due to the bad weather that has made life difficult since the weekend.

Peterhansel, who led by one minute 57 seconds overnight, ended the day one minute 38 seconds behind the nine times world rally champion, who won his third stage of this year’s event.

It might have been more if Loeb, who started after his team mate,

had not suffered a puncture on the Argentine side of the border.

“I tried really hard because today was a stage like the ones I like, with some fast roads, whereas tomorrow is more desert-like with dunes,” said Loeb.

“I wanted to try to make a gap today but finally I had a puncture on the last part of the stage so I lost a few minutes to change the wheel,” he added.

“At the moment the fight seems to be between me and Stephane, but I think the two next days will be very, very tough and anything can happen there.”

The rally, which finishes in Buenos Aires on Saturday, is famed as one of the toughest endurance

challenges in motorsport.

Previously a gruelling race from Paris across the Sahara to the Senegalese capital, it switched to South America in 2009 for security reasons.

In the motorcycle category, British rider Sam Sunderland increased his overall lead after finishing third in the stage won by Spain’s Joan Barreda.

Sunderland now leads Chile’s Pablo Quintanilla by nearly 21 minutes.

“It was really, really wet and difficult to pass in some places. I stopped a few times to change my goggles and change my gloves and silly things, just because it was too much,” he said. (rtr)

MANCHESTER — Manchester United closed in on the final of the English League Cup by beating injury-hit Hull 2-0 in the first leg of their semifinal thanks to second-half goals by Juan Mata and Marouane Fellaini on Tuesday.

Mata put United on course for a ninth straight win in all competitions by tapping home from close range in the 56th minute and substitute Fellaini headed in a second in the 87th, before bounding to the Old Trafford touchline and into the arms of manager Jose Mourinho.

“The second goal is maybe the important goal,” said Mourinho,

who won the League Cup three times with Chelsea and is seeking to reach his first final as United manager. The second leg is at Hull on Jan. 26 and United is a huge favorite to reach the final for a ninth time. Liverpool plays Southampton in the other semifinal, with the first leg on Wednesday.

Atletico reaches Copa del Rey quarterfinals despite loss

MADRID — Antoine Griezmann scored a goal the day after being named the world’s third-best player, helping Atletico Madrid reach the quarterfinals of the Copa del Rey despite a 3-2 home loss to Las Palmas on Tuesday.

The France forward missed training to attend FIFA’s awards ceremony in Zurich, where Cristiano Ronaldo took the vote as the best player. But Griezmann got back to Spain in time to help Atletico defend a 2-0 first-leg win and advance 4-3 on aggregate at the Vicente Calderon Stadium.

Griezmann, who got a loud ovation from the crowd when he was substituted in the 64th minute, has scored in all three matches Atletico has played this year. He hadn’t found the net in five straight games before the winter break.

He was runner-up to Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo at FIFA’s event in Switzerland on Monday.

Griezmann opened the scoring from close range in the 49th minute after a cross by Argentine midfielder Nicolas Gaitan. Las Palmas striker Marko Livaja equalized with

a shot from inside the area in the 57th, and Argentine forward Angel Correa put the hosts ahead again in a breakaway in the 61st .

Livaja netted in the 89th and Mateo Garcia scored in injury time to give Las Palmas victory on the night. “We let the win escape in the final minutes, but we are happy that we advanced,” Correa said.

Atletico is trying to win the competition for the first time since 2012-13, when it defeated Real Madrid in the final at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.

In addition to beating Las Palmas in the first leg last week, Atletico had also defeated the club from the Canary Islands in its last league match before the winter break in December.

“We needed another goal there in the end,” Las Palmas defender David Garcia said. “We are happy with the way we played. We knew it was going to be difficult after the 2-0 loss at home.”

Four second-leg matches will be played on Wednesday, with two-time defending champion Barcelona hosting Athletic Bilbao and needing to overcome a 2-1 loss in Bilbao. (ap)

Midfielder David Silva enjoys the competitive nature of the Premier League but the Spaniard is refusing to become obsessed about winning another league title with Manchester City. ‘Miracle Man’ Jacobs to challenge unbeaten Golovkin

NEW YORK - Undefeated middleweight slugger Gennady Golovkin will put four world championship belts on the line March 18 against WBA champion Daniel Jacobs, who said on Tuesday that he relished another chance to beat the odds.

Golovkin of Kazakhstan is 36-0 with 33 knockouts but Jacobs, known as “The Miracle Man” after winning his battle with bone cancer, is keen for the Madison Square Garden clash.

“The creator has positioned my life to be an inspiration to so many people throughout the world. So many people are affected by cancer,” Brooklyn’s Jacobs told reporters.

“The fact that I can overcome ... winning this fight will take everything to the next level.”

While Golovkin, with knockout power in both hands, has been invincible, Jacobs has earned respect for his courage and perseverance as well as for pugilistic skills that have led to a 32-1 record with 29 stoppages.

In May 2011, Jacobs was diagnosed with a form of bone cancer and was left partially paralyzed. After radiation treatments, surgery to remove a tumor wrapped around his spine and arduous rehabilitation, he returned to boxing in late 2012.

Two years later, Jacobs stopped Jarrod Fletcher in five rounds to win the WBA middleweight title, and has finished off his last dozen opponents within the distance.

Jacobs, who combines power with elite boxing skills, may give 34-year-old Golovkin his toughest test.

“I believe Dan is ready for this fight.

This is his dream. A dream for everybody,” said Golovkin, who voiced respect for Jacobs. “For us, it will decide who is number one, who is the best. I promise an amazing show.”

Said Golovkin trainer Abel Sanchez: “I would say he is probably the best fighter we’ve fought to date. Great right hand, good boxing knowledge, good boxing IQ.” Andre Dozier, Jacobs’ trainer, said his fighter would be up to the task. “He has fought the hardest fight he could ever have, in life. TORONTO - DeMar DeRozan led the way with a 41 points as the Toronto Raptors avoided a third straight loss, defeating the Boston Celtics 114-106 on Tuesday.

The Raptors (25-13) closed out the fourth quarter on a 19-4 run to pick up their third consecutive home victory over Boston. The Celtics (23-15) saw their four-game winning streak end.

Raptors center Jonas Valanciunas added a career-high 23 rebounds and 18 points. Kyle Lowry chipped in with 24 points, nine assists and four rebounds in the win.

DeRozan also stepped up and collected 13 rebounds, including 11 defensive boards.

“He’s a tough kid,” Raptors coach Dwane Casey said. “More than anything else, the 41 points is nice, but 13 rebounds, the 11 defensive rebounds when we needed it.

“DeMar came in and got some big rebounds, tough rebounds, so that was impressive. That was more of a sign of grit and grind as much as the 41 points.”

BOLIVIA - Sebastien Loeb won the eighth stage of the Dakar Rally and recaptured the lead from Peugeot team mate Stephane Peterhansel on Tuesday as the Frenchmen led the field back into Argentina from Bolivia.

The timed element of the stage from the high plains of Uyuni down to Salta was again shortened due to the bad weather that has made life difficult since the weekend.

Peterhansel, who led by one minute 57 seconds overnight, ended the day one minute 38 seconds behind the nine times world rally champion, who won his third stage of this year’s event.

It might have been more if Loeb, who started after his team mate,

had not suffered a puncture on the Argentine side of the border.

“I tried really hard because today was a stage like the ones I like, with some fast roads, whereas tomorrow is more desert-like with dunes,” said Loeb.

“I wanted to try to make a gap today but finally I had a puncture on the last part of the stage so I lost a few minutes to change the wheel,” he added.

“At the moment the fight seems to be between me and Stephane, but I think the two next days will be very, very tough and anything can happen there.”

The rally, which finishes in Buenos Aires on Saturday, is famed as one of the toughest endurance

challenges in motorsport.

Previously a gruelling race from Paris across the Sahara to the Senegalese capital, it switched to South America in 2009 for security reasons.

In the motorcycle category, British rider Sam Sunderland increased his overall lead after finishing third in the stage won by Spain’s Joan Barreda.

Sunderland now leads Chile’s Pablo Quintanilla by nearly 21 minutes.

“It was really, really wet and difficult to pass in some places. I stopped a few times to change my goggles and change my gloves and silly things, just because it was too much,” he said. (rtr)

Taiwan scrambles jets, navy as China aircraft carrier enters Taiwan Strait

TAIPEI - Taiwan scrambled jets and navy ships on Wednesday as a group of Chinese warships led by China’s sole aircraft carrier sailed north through the Taiwan Strait, the latest sign of heightened tensions between Beijing and the self-ruled Taiwan.

The Soviet-built Liaoning aircraft carrier, returning from exercises in the South China Sea, was not trespassing in Taiwan’s territorial waters but entered its air defence identification zone (ADIZ) in the southwest, Taiwan’s defence ministry said.

As a result Taiwan scrambled jets and navy ships to “surveil and control” the passage of the Chinese ships through the narrow body of water separating Taiwan and China, Taiwan defence ministry spokesman Chen Chung-chi said.

Taiwanese military aircraft and ships have been deployed to follow the carrier group, which is sailing up the west side of the median line of the strait, he said.

Taiwan’s top policymaker for China affairs on Wednesday urged Beijing to resume dialogue with Taipei, after official communication channels were halted by Beijing from June.

“I want to emphasise our government has sufficient capability to protect our national security. It’s not necessary to overly panic,” said Chang Hsiao-yueh, minister for Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council, during a news briefing in response to reporters’ questions on the Liaoning’s movements.

U.S. says might not shoot down North Korean ICBM, eying intel

WASHINGTON - The U.S. military might monitor a North Korean intercontinental ballistic missile test and gather intelligence rather than destroy it, as long as the launch did not pose a threat, Defense Secretary Ash Carter said on Tuesday.

North Korea declared on Sunday it could test-launch an ICBM at any time from any location set by leader Kim Jong Un, saying a hostile U.S. policy was to blame for its arms development.

“If the missile is threatening, it will be intercepted. If it’s not threatening, we won’t necessarily do so,” Carter said in his final news briefing before President Barack Obama’s administration leaves office on Jan. 20.

“Because it may be more to our advantage to, first of all, save our interceptor inventory, and, second, to gather intelligence from the flight, rather than do that (intercept the ICBM) when it’s not threatening.”

The top U.S. military officer, Marine General Joseph Dunford, who will stay in his role as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, concurred with Carter at the event but did not enter into specifics.

Carter’s language left open the possibility of U.S. military action in any scenario.

Carter’s remarks came just over a week after U.S. President-elect Donald Trump vowed that North Korea would never fulfill its threat to test an ICBM. Trump said in a Jan. 2 tweet: “It won’t happen!”

Preventing an ICBM test is far easier said than done, and Trump has given no indication of how he might roll back North Korea’s weapons programs after he takes office, something successive U.S. administrations, both Democratic and Republican, have failed to do.

A 2016 assessment released by the Pentagon’s weapons testing office on Tuesday said that U.S. ground-based interceptors meant to knock out any incoming ICBM still had low reliability, giving the system itself a limited capability of shielding the United States.

Once fully developed, a North Korean ICBM could threaten the continental United States, which is around 9,000 km (5,500 miles) from the North. ICBMs have a minimum range of about 5,500 km (3,400 miles), but some are designed to travel 10,000 km (6,200 miles) or farther.

Former U.S. officials and other experts have said the United States essentially had two options when it came to trying to curb North Korea’s fast-expanding nuclear and missile programs - negotiate or take military action.

Neither path offers certain success and the military option is fraught with huge dangers, especially for Japan and South Korea, U.S. allies in close proximity to North Korea.

Indonesia’s president moves to rein in “out of control” military chief

JAKARTA - Indonesia’s President Joko Widodo reproached his military chief in a meeting last week amid concerns the commander was “out of control” after he unilaterally suspended defence cooperation with Australia, two sources briefed on the meeting said.

Widodo’s intervention highlights alarm about General Gatot Nurmantyo, who promotes the notion that Indonesia is besieged by “proxy wars”, in which foreign states seek to undermine the nation by manipulating non-state actors.

Analysts and some of Widodo’s aides are also concerned that Nurmantyo is laying the groundwork for an expansion of the military’s role in civilian affairs in the world’s third-largest democracy and may have political ambitions himself.

Widodo, the first president from outside the military and political establishment, needed to move quickly to demonstrate his authority as the country’s commander-in-chief, one senior government official said.

“With Gatot, the feeling is like he’s a little out of control,” he said.

Nurmantyo declared a rupture in military ties after an Indonesian officer found “offensive” teaching material while on a language training course in Australia late last year. The material suggested that Indonesia’s Papua province should be independent and mocked the nation’s state ideology, Pancasila, according to Nurmantyo.

CAUGHT OFF GUARD

One of the officials told Reuters Widodo and others in the govern-

ment were caught off guard when local media reported Nurmantyo’s announcement of the suspension in military ties with Australia.

While the general was not formally reprimanded, the official said, Widodo served him a warning during a meeting at a presidential palace in Bogor, outside Jakarta.

The meeting was confirmed by another senior government aide, who also spoke on condition of anonymity.

Nurmantyo declined requests to be interviewed and a military spokesman declined to comment on the meeting. The senior government official said: “We suspect that Gatot is exploiting this incident for his own political agenda, his own political ambition.”

“He has been making many public appearances and speeches lately,” he said. “Frankly, we think many of them about proxy wars and the threat to Indonesia are absolutely ridiculous.”

In one speech, Nurmantyo predicted that a food shortage in China could trigger a flood of boat-borne refugees. He told listeners he would slaughter 10 cows and dump them into the sea to attract sharks that would devour the Chinese.

One of the officials who disclosed Widodo’s meeting with Nurmantyo said the military chief’s job was safe, downplaying speculation that the general would be relieved of his duties.

“For now, we are confident that he will not betray the president or the civilian government,” he said.(rtr)

Asia shares recover losses, markets await Trump news conference

TOKYO - Asian shares rose to two-month highs on Wednesday as investors looked to President-elect Donald Trump’s news conference later in the day for clues on his policies on taxes, fiscal spending, international trade and currencies.

While Trump’s election campaign calls for tax cuts and more infrastructure spending have boosted U.S. shares and the dollar, his protectionist statements and a flurry of off-the-cuff Tweets have kept many investors on edge. European shares are expected to open slightly lower after Tuesday’s gains, with spread-betters seeing Britain’s FTSE and Germany’s DAX falling 0.1 percent.

MSCI’s broadest index of AsiaPacific shares outside Japan rose 0.5 percent, essentially returning to where it was just before the Nov. 8 U.S. presidential election. It has recovered from post-election losses of over 5 percent. The gains were led by South Korean shares, which scaled a 1-1/2year peak as Samsung Electronic, Asia’s biggest company by market cap, hit a record high, cheered by solid earnings published last week.

Japan’s Nikkei ticked up 0.4 percent, snapping three days of losses.

On Wall Street, the S&P 500 ended flat on Tuesday as investors looked to the start of the earnings season this week to assess if record market levels are justified, following a 5 percent gain since the election.

“There are underlying expectations that Trump’s tax cuts and infrastructure spending will boost the U.S. economy, which should support markets,” said Masahiro Ichikawa, senior strategist at Sumitomo Mitsui

Asset Management.

“On the other hand, if he takes a hard line stance on China in line with his campaign promises, then China would probably take countermeasures, raising concerns about tensions between the U.S. and China,” he added.

Trump has vowed to label China a currency manipulator on his first day in office on Jan. 20 and has threatened to slap huge tariffs on imports from China. U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Paul Ryan and top members of President-elect Donald Trump’s transition team are discussing a controversial plan to tax imports.

Economists have warned that protectionist measures could stifle international trade and hurt global growth. The Mexican peso is taking the brunt of such concerns, hitting a record low on Tuesday.

Trump has attacked automakers for building vehicles in Mexico for export to the United States, forcing some of them to consider changing their investment plans in Mexico.

“Mexico has been targetted... It looks hard for Mexico to attract investments in the medium term,” said Yukino Yamada, senior strategist at Daiwa Securities.

The peso has lost 16 percent of its value against the dollar since Trump was elected. The U.S. currency lost some of its steam against most other

Alstar-B demands to block online taxi

Transportation Agency Head promises to give response next April

DENPASAR - Hundreds of taxi drivers coalesced into the members of the Alliance of Bali Transport Driver (Alstar-B) came again to rally to the office of the governor of Bali, on Tuesday (Jan. 10). Prior to coming to the governor’s office, they first took action at the north of Dewa Ruci roundabouts.

The demand of the Alstar-B remains the same, namely asking the government to block the online application-based taxi services. In this case, they include Grab and Uber Taxi.

Alstar-B was received by the Head of Bali Transportation Agency I Gusti Agung Ngurah Sudarsana as well as the Head of Bali Infocom and Statistics Agency I Nyoman Sujaya in front of the office of the Bali governor. Responding to the demand of the Alstar-B, the Head of the Bali Transportation Agency I Gusti Agung Ngurah Sudarsana promised to give response until April.

It is the end of the extension period of the dissemination for the Regulation of the Minister of Transportation No.32/2016 on the Implementation of Human Passenger with Non-Route Vehicle (Ministerial Regulation No. 32—Ed) made since last October 2016.

“We’ve been preparing some things related to the dissemination. Nevertheless, your presence reminds us of always knowing the progress of the online taxi. We will remain to hold your commitment until April in accordance with the order of the Minister of Transportation to do dissemination,” he stated that was responded with dissatisfaction of the demonstrators.

Myanmar’s Suu Kyi sends envoy to Bangladesh as Rohingya crisis deepens

YANGON - A special envoy of Myanmar’s leader Aung San Suu Kyi will begin top-level talks in Bangladesh on Wednesday, as the United Nations said the Rohingya crisis prompted 65,000 people to flee Myanmar for Bangladesh in the past three months.

Kyaw Tin, Myanmar’s deputy minister of foreign affairs, will make a three-day visit to the Bangladeshi capital of Dhaka, in a rare diplomatic foray to tackle the biggest challenge facing Nobel Peace laureate Suu Kyi’s nine-month old administration.

The stream of new refugees, and reports that Myanmar’s navy has shot at Bangladeshi fishermen, have further tested historically strained ties between the neighbours, who each see the stateless Rohingya Muslims as the other side’s problem.

The visit marks a shift away from Myanmar’s reluctant approach to cooperation with its western neighbour, which analysts see as key to solving the growing crisis.

Rohingya insurgents attacked Myanmar border posts on Oct. 9, killing nine police. In response Myanmar sent the army into the Muslim-majority northern part of Rakhine State.

Residents and refugees have described summary executions, arbitrary arrests and rape in the operation. Suu Kyi’s government has denied almost all abuse allegations.

During the visit, the neighbours will discuss bilateral relations, but the Myanmar side was unlikely to bring up the “complicated” issue of border security, said Aye Aye Soe, deputy director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

On the same day, at least another 14 people were killed and dozens injured in separate incidents in the volatile southern provinces of Helmand and Kandahar.

The Islamist militant Afghan Taliban movement, which immediately claimed responsibility for the Kabul attack, said its target had been a minibus carrying staff from the National Directorate of Security (NDS), Afghanistan’s main intelligence agency.

It put the casualties at more than 70 and said they were all members of the security forces.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said a suicide bomber attacked the minibus in the Darul Aman area, and was followed almost immediately by a car bomber, who killed security forces attending the scene.

“We planned this attack for quite some time and the plan was target some senior officers of the intelligence agency. We sent one suicide bomber to target a mini bus that was carrying these officers,” he said. “We did exactly what we planned.”

One witness, Sajadullah Khan, said he saw numerous wounded people lying on the ground after the explosion which he said “totally burned out” the minibus.

President Ashraf Ghani condemned the “criminal” attacks and vowed the perpe-

trators would not be safe anywhere in the country.

“The Taliban shamelessly claim credit for the attack on civilians and they’re proud of it,” he said in a statement.

AMBASSADOR WOUNDED The attack underlined the security threat posed by Islamist militants fighting to topple the Afghan government and drive out foreign troops stationed there for the last 15 years.

Hours after the Kabul incident, at least seven people were killed and 18 wounded in an explosion in the southern city of Kandahar. There was no immediate claim of responsibility. Among the wounded were the provincial governor and the United Arab Emirates ambassador, officials said.

Afghan armed forces control no more than two thirds of national territory, and have struggled to contain the Taliban insurgency since the bulk of NATO soldiers withdrew at the end of 2014.

Several thousand, mainly Americans, remain in training and counter-terrorism roles.

Men who eat lots of red meat have higher risk for common bowel disease

BOSTON - A new study suggests that men who eat lots of red meat are much more likely to have bowel problems, pain and nausea than their peers who stick mainly with chicken or fish.

Researchers examined more than two decades of data on more than 46,000 men and found frequent red meat eaters were 58 percent more likely to be diagnosed with diverticulitis, a common bowel condition that occurs when small pockets or bulges lining the intestines become inflamed.

“Previous studies have shown that a high fiber diet is associated with a lower risk of diverticulitis, however, the role of other dietary factors in influencing risk of diverticulitis was not well studied,” said senior study author Andrew Chan, a researcher at Harvard University and Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

“Our result show that diets high in red meat may be associated with a higher risk of diverticulitis,” Chan added by email.

Diverticulitis is common, resulting in more than 200,000 hospitalizations a year in the U.S. at a cost of more than $2 billion, Chan and colleagues note in the journal Gut. New cases are on the rise, and the exact causes are unknown, although the condition has been linked to smoking, obesity and the use of certain nonprescription painkillers known as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

While diverticulitis can often be treated with a liquid or low-fiber diet, severe cases may require hospitalization and surgery to fix complications like

perforations in the gut wall.

Researchers examined data collected on men who were aged 40 to 75 when they joined the study between 1986 and 2012. Every four years men were asked how often, on average, they ate red meat, poultry and fish over the preceding year.

They were given nine options, ranging from ‘never’ or ‘less than once a month,’ to ‘six or more times a day.’

During the study period, 764 men developed diverticulitis.

Men who ate the most red meat were also more likely to smoke, more likely to regularly take NSAIDs, and less likely to eat foods with fiber or get intense exercise.

By contrast, men who ate more chicken and fish were less likely to smoke or take NSAIDs and more likely to get vigorous exercise.

After accounting for these other factors that can influence the risk of diverticulitis, red meat was still associated with higher odds of developing the bowel disorder.

Each daily serving of red meat was associated with an 18 percent increased risk, the study found.

Unprocessed meats like beef, pork and lamb were associated with a greater risk than processed meats like bacon or sausage.

It’s possible the higher cooking temperatures typically used to prepare unprocessed meats may influence the composition of bacteria in the gut or inflammatory activity, though the exact reason for the increased risk tied to these foods is unknown, the researchers note. (rtr)

Women who didn’t give babies vitamin D most often cited safety concerns, the survey found.

One limitation of the study is that it included mostly white mothers, and the findings might not apply to women of other racial or ethnic groups or with a high risk of vitamin D deficiency, the authors note in the Annals of Family Medicine.

Still, the findings highlight the need to educate new parents about vitamin D and make sure breastfeeding mothers take supplements themselves or give babies drops, said Dr. Lydia Furman, a researcher at Case Western Reserve University and Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio.

“Infants can only receive adequate vitamin D if their mothers receive adequate vitamin D and thus there is adequate vitamin D in their breast milk, or if they are supplemented,” Furman, who wasn’t involved in the study, said by email. Some infant formulas may contain enough vitamin D to make drops unnecessary. But babies who consume both breast milk and formula may not get enough vitamin D and still need drops or mothers who take supplements.

MANY breastfed infants may not get enough vitamin D because their mothers prefer not to give babies supplement drops, a study suggests.

Pediatricians recommend that mothers exclusively breastfeed infants until at least six months of age because it can reduce babies’ risk of ear and respiratory infections, sudden infant death syndrome, allergies, childhood obesity and diabetes.

Because breast milk typically doesn’t contain enough vitamin D to help infants develop healthy bones, the American Academy of Pediatrics advises nursing mothers to give their babies daily supplements of 400 IU (international units) of vitamin D. As an alternative, women can take vitamin D supplements themselves – typically 4,000 to 6,000 IU daily – to give babies enough in breast milk so that drops aren’t needed.

The research team surveyed 184 breastfeeding mothers, including 44 mothers who also gave their babies formula in addition to breast milk.

Altogether, just 55 percent of the women said they gave their babies vitamin D drops and only 42 percent supplemented with the recommended 400 IU. “Many mothers were not aware of the need for vitamin D supplementation or their physician had not recommended supplementation,” said senior study author Dr. Tom Thacher, a researcher at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

“Others believed that breast milk had all the needed nutrition, and some mentioned the inconvenience of giving a supplement or their poor experience of giving a supplement to previous children,” Thacher added by email.

With the addition of heavy equipment and personnel, Eka Merthawan is optimistic there will be no longer accumulation of waste along the beaches in Badung. “Collection and transportation of the waste is carried out by different officers. “The opportunity for Bali younger generation to become entrepreneurs is very open. Now, it just needs the way how to manage the existing opportunities,” he advised.

The problem is that the implementation at local level is not yet clear and effective. Japanese traveler experiences theft at hotel

MANGUPURA - A Japanese traveler, Yamada Mayumi, 49, reported a loss of JPY 43,000, put in the room of Hotel Aquarius Star on Jalan Legian, on Monday (Jan. 9). The culprit is no other than the hotel employee named Esa Tirtanaya, 19, so that he was immediately taken to Kuta Police Station.

Chief of Kuta Police, Wayan Sumara, said on Tuesday (Jan.

10) that the victim stayed in room 303. Initially her money worth JPY 43,000 was placed on the bed. After that, the victim went out of the room for breakfast. When returning to the room, in fact her money already disappeared and the incident was then reported to police station.

Based on the report, a team led

by Kuta Criminal Investigation Unit Budiartama conducted a

crime scene investigation. Results of the investigation led to the hotel employee because there were no damages found in the room.

“We checked the hotel employees who were on duty at the time, where one of them is the perpetrator. When questioned, initially the perpetrator avoided, but after his confession was deepened he finally admitted,” he said.

Banyuwangi, East Java, admitted that he first came into the victim’s room by using a master key that was taken at the hotel reception.

After that, the perpetrator pretended to check the completeness of the room. “The perpetrator knocked at the door of hotel room in advance. Since there is no response from the guest, the perpetrator came into the room by using a master key,” he said.

The victim’s money was then taken and exchanged at money changer and he obtained IDR 4.5 million. “The evidence is still intact because this case was quickly revealed. The incident clearly tarnished the image of Bali tourism. We hope employees of hotel and other establishments in Kuta to jointly maintain the security and not vice versa,” said Sumara. (kmb36)

Streep vs. Trump sparks Twitter fray

CALIFORNIA - Donald Trump called Meryl Streep an “overrated actress” on Monday after the three-time Oscar winner publicly criticized him for having belittled a disabled journalist.

Without naming the presidentelect, Streep, the most admired U.S. actress of her generation, assailed him while giving a lifetime achievement acceptance speech at Sunday night’s Golden Globe awards. Her speech received more than a million YouTube views. In it, Streep recalled her dismay at Trump’s imitation of Serge Kovaleski, a disabled New York Times reporter, during the 2016 election campaign.

CHICAGO - With a final call of his campaign mantra “Yes We Can,” President Barack Obama urged Americans on Tuesday to stand up for U.S. values and reject discrimination as the United States transitions to the presidency of Republican Donald Trump.

In an emotional speech in which he thanked his family and declared his time as president the honor of his life, Obama gently prodded the public to embrace his vision of progress while repudiating some of the policies that Trump promoted during his campaign for the White House.

“So just as we, as citizens, must remain vigilant against external aggression, we must guard against a weakening of the values that make us who we are,” Obama told a crowd of 18,000 in his hometown of Chicago, where he celebrated his election in 2008 as the first black president of the United States.

Trump, who takes office on Jan. 20, proposed temporarily banning Muslims from entering the coun-

try, building a wall on the border with Mexico, upending a global deal to fight climate change and dismantling Obama’s healthcare reform law.

Obama made clear his opposition to those positions during fiery campaign speeches for 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, but has struck a more conciliatory tone with Trump since the election.

In his farewell speech, he made clear his positions had not changed and he said his efforts to end the use of torture and close the U.S. prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, were part of a broader move to uphold U.S. values.

“That’s why I reject discrimina-

tion against Muslim Americans,” he said in a clear reference to Trump that drew applause. He said bold action was needed to fight global warming and said “science and reason” mattered.

“If anyone can put together a plan that is demonstrably better than the improvements we’ve made to our healthcare system, that covers as many people at less cost, I will publicly support it,” he said in another prodding challenge to his successor. Trump has urged the Republican-controlled Congress to repeal the law right away.

RACE AND NOSTALGIA Obama, who came to office amid high expectations that his election would heal historic racial divides, acknowledged that was an impossible goal.

“After my election, there was talk of a post-racial America,” he said. “Such a vision, however well-

intended, was never realistic. Race remains a potent and often divisive force in our society.”

However, Obama said he remained hopeful about the work that a younger generation would do. “Yes we can,” he said. “Yes we did.”
