Kevin Hart steps down as Oscars host over homophobic tweets CALIFORNIA - Kevin Hart has stepped down as host of the Oscars next year after tweets emerged in which he used homophobic slurs.

The decision comes just three days after he was announced as host of the 91st Academy Awards ceremony.

Tweets originally posted between 2009 and 2011 resurfaced shortly after he was confirmed for the job, containing offensive language towards the LGBT community.

The actor and comedian’s response to the outcry attracted a further backlash, as he wrote on Instagram that critics should “stop being negative”.

In an accompanying video, Hart said he wasn’t going to “let the craziness frustrate me” and added that he “loves everybody”.

In a second video, Hart said the Academy had asked him to apologise over the tweets but he “chose to pass” as he has “addressed this

several times before”.

He said the “same energy that went into finding those old tweets could be the same energy put into finding the response” and that he did not want to have to explain again that he is a different person now.

“I passed on the apology,” he said. “The reason why I passed is because I’ve addressed this several times. This is not the first time this has come up. I’ve addressed it, I’ve spoken on it. I’ve said where the rights and wrongs were.

“I’ve said who I am now versus who I was then. I’ve done it, I’ve done it. I’m not going to continue to go back and tap into the days of old.

I’ve moved on, I’m in a completely different space in my life.

“The same energy that went into finding those old tweets could be the same energy put into finding the response to the questions that have been asked years after years after years. (IBP/net)

Grammy Awards: Kendrick Lamar, Drake, Cardi B and Lady Gaga among biggest nominees

LOS ANGELES - Kendrick Lamar and Drake lead the nominations for next year’s Grammy Awards, with seven nods each.

Kevin Hart has stepped down just days after he was announced as host.

Cardi B, Lady Gaga, HER, Maren Morris, Childish Gambino, producer Sounwave and engineer Mike Bozzi all have five nominations each. While male acts dominated the nominations in the main categories last year, five of this year’s best album nominees are women, with Cardi B, Brandi Carlile, HER, Janelle Monae and Kacey Musgraves competing against Drake, Post Malone and the Black Panther soundtrack.

In the best new artist category, six of the eight nominees are also

women, with British stars Dua Lipa and Jorja Smith nominated alongside HER, Chloe x Halle, Margo Price and Bebe Rexha, as well as Luke Combs and rock band Greta Van Fleet.

River edge out Boca after extra time to win Copa Libertadores

River Plate won the Copa Libertadores by beating their fiercest rivals Boca Juniors 3-1 after extra time on Sunday, bringing an end to a final tainted by violence and moved more than six thousand miles away from Argentina.

Boca took the lead through Dario Benedetto but Lucas Pratto equalised before Juan Quintero and Gonzalo Martinez scored in extra time, aided by Wilmar Barrios being sent off, to win a fittingly dramatic contest for River.

MANGUPURA - To minimize flooding in the Kuta area, Seminyak and Legian to the upstream of Mati River flow, the problem of sedimentation needs to get serious attention. Normalization of sedimentation of the Mati River channel must be carried out continuously.

Of a number of flood incidents that occurred, one of them on Jalan Kunti II in Seminyak was indeed caused by the water overflow from Mati River. In the future, Subak Museum is expected to be a new tourist destination in the East Gianyar region, so that there is even distribution of tourist destinations between East Gianyar and West Gianyar such as the Ubud and surrounding areas.

In addition to displaying the

history of the subak development in Bali as well as a collection of traditional agricultural tools, later the Gianyar Subak Museum will also provide non-permanent exhibition spaces, such as paintings, crafts and culinary tourism.

Similarly, it is planned to also establish a village stage. “This will be designed in complete tour package, including spiritual tourism, educational tours, culinary tours, craft exhibitions, and performing arts. So, they are complete in one location,” added Gusti Ngurah Wijana.

Regent of Gianyar, Made Mahayastra, added that construction of the Gianyar Subak Museum is sourced from the central government fund of IDR 30 billion and the Gianyar Regional Budget of

IDR 6 billion. The Subak Museum is established in addition to being a conservation effort as well as an educational means about the existence of subak (irrigation cooperative) in Bali,” he said.

CALIFORNIA - Magnetism transforms a weird new material from soft to rigid in a split second. This metamaterial — a synthetic structure designed to behave in ways that natural materials don’t — comprises a gridlike network of plastic tubes filled with fluid that becomes more viscous in a magnetic field, causing the tubes to firm up. The material could help make more adaptable robots or body armor, researchers report online December 7 in Science Advances.

Christopher Spadaccini, a materials engineer at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California, and colleagues 3-D printed lattices composed of plastic struts 5 millimeters long and injected them with a mixture

of tiny iron particles and oil. In the absence of a magnetic field, the iron microparticles remain scattered randomly throughout the oil, so the liquid is runny. But close to a magnet, these iron microparticles align into chains

along the magnetic field lines, making the fluid viscous and the lattices stiffer.

A solid hunk of iron microparticle–filled material would be heavy and expensive to make. Building tubular structures that are mostly open

space makes this tunable material more lightweight, says coauthor Julie Jackson, an engineer at Lawrence Livermore.

The researchers tested individual “unit cells” of the new material — hollow, die-shaped structures that can collectively form the larger lattices.

Moving one unit cell from about eight centimeters to one centimeter away from a magnet increased its stiffness by about 62 percent.

In future technologies, this material could be paired with devices that use electricity to generate magnetic fields, called electromagnets. Material that becomes softer or stiffer on demand could be used to make next-generation sports pads or helmets with tunable impact absorption, Jackson says. Robots with changeable stiffness could squeeze into small spaces, but then be sturdy enough to carry or move other objects. (IBP/net)

AMLAPURA — Dozens of elementary school students at Seraya Tengah and Seraya Timur, Karangasem Subdistrict were forced to leave on Saturday (Dec. 08) because the three rivers, namely the Tukad Yeh Banges, Tukad Perit, and Tukad Tibu Dalem overflowed onto the highway.

One of the fourth grade students, Pande Gede Rudiasa, 12, explained the number of students taking leave reached dozens.

Most of them are students of elementary school, while for junior high and high school students are only a few. Last Saturday, I took leave because the overflow of rainwater got to the road. It reached the height of the knee.

This morning, there was also a high rainfall. Hopefully tomorrow (Monday) the overflow of

rainwater will be shallow, so that students can return to go to school,” he said.

GENEVA - The world’s most powerful particle accelerator has gone quiet. Particles took their last spin around the Large Hadron Collider on December 3 before scientists shut the machine down for two years of upgrades.

Located at the particle physics laboratory CERN in Geneva, the accelerator has smashed together approximately 16 million billion protons since 2015, when it reached its current energy of 13 trillion electron volts.

Planned improvements before the machine restarts in 2021 will bring the energy up to 14 trillion electron

ITDC returned to provide training and guidance through the Community Development Partnership program.

MANGUPURA — As a measure to support the coastal merchant community in the Nusa Dua area to continuously improve their capabilities in culinary matters, the Indonesia Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) returned to provide training and

guidance through the Community Development Partnership program on Friday (Dec. 7). They were gathered to take part in the cooking class provided by Indonesia Chef Association.

According to the Operational Division Head of ITDC Nusa

Dua, Made Pariwijaya, the traders are expected to be able to increase their capacity and capability in providing food and beverage. Through this cooking class, they are trained to improve service standards and quality standards presented by merchant

associations.

Pariwijaya said the training is very important to create a balance, equality and equal distribution of income in the Nusa Dua region. Thus, it is creating complementary relationships because it is realized ITDC will not progress without the support of the supporting community.

“Through this training, in the future the menu of local cuisine in Nusa Dua will be standardized, whoever serves the traders is expected to be able to maintain the present standards,” he concluded.

He planned to create a special menu specifically for Nusa Dua featured in accordance with regional characteristics and potential. By that way, people will remember when they come to Nusa Dua and they must know their typical menus. “For this time, we have trained about 30 people from three communities, each of which has 10 people, namely the Sekar Sari association, Peninsula and Yasa Segara,” he said.

He admitted the training and coaching will be carried out continuously because in the future the traders would be made a kind of street food festival or Balinese festival. They will also

be involved more in the Nusa Dua Heritage Food Festival, Nusa Dua Fiesta and other events in Nusa Dua. “We are confident it will increasingly make the Peninsula Island more attractive, which will have an impact on regional occupancy,” he assured.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the LPM Benoa, Wayan Ambara Putra, who was present at the opening, hoped the beach merchant community will later be able to improve food and service standards. The training is expected to further enrich the food variants presented. Do not let all the merchants have the same food menus, so as to make them less attractive to prospective buyers. “Hopefully, it does not only train western food, but also traditional or local food, which of course has been modified better,” he hoped.

Monkeys grab people’s agricultural products

Other than harming farmers, residents are also worried because the monkeys have showed fierce temperament. The monkeys are feared to bite the residents and trigger new diseases for local people. Without being immediately handled, this can become a new problem for them.

After receiving the aspiration, Chairman of Commission II, Komang Suantara, said that he immediately continued his aspirations to the Bali Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) recently.

The agency provided several ways to deal with this monkey pest, starting from conducting a mapping, conservation to elimination and castration efforts.

“Furthermore, the Bali BKSDA will coordinate with the Agriculture Agency (Animal Husbandry Division) to immediately take action,” he said.

The monkey pests do not only attack in the hills of Dawan subdis-

trict, but also in hilly areas at Banjarangkan subdistrict. However, so far there have been no reports regarding the increase in monkey populations in Banjarangkan. In the meeting, Suantara hoped the BKSDA Bali can move quickly to deal with it.

The parliament in principle have trusted the handling entirely to the agency. There are several options on offer whether to carry out elimination efforts or injections, or maybe they can be removed.

Abrasion in Gilimanuk getting worse

NEGARA - Condition of the coast in the Asri and Jineng Agung neighborhoods, Gilimanuk village, is now even more alarming. It happens because the abrasion is getting worse.

The beach that was once very far from settlement is now right behind the homes of residents.

This condition is experienced by a disadvantaged widow included in the list of poor family, Ketut Sukradani, 46, in the Asri neighborhood of Gilimanuk.

Due to being hit by abrasion, the house owned by this mother of one child is now cracked. Moreover, the room and kitchen’s ceiling of the assistance house has broken down for a long time.

As seen in the field on Saturday (Dec. 8), the house of Ketut Sukradani has undergone damages on plaited bamboo wall having been tattered and half broken. In order to be able to sleep, this mother and child must support the ceiling with bamboo so as not to fall.

Likewise the kitchen has also been destroyed by abrasion so that one of the two rooms owned is now used for kitchen. Currently, their home is also very close to the shoreline as having been destroyed by abrasion.

Headman of Gilimanuk, Gede Wariana Prabawa, when confirmed on Sunday (Dec. 9) stated that for the installation of culvert and arrangement of the concrete chunks at the location just needs to wait for heavy equipment. His authority also still strives in order it can be dealt with immediately.

Previously, he also said that for the long term handling, the village government had applied for abrasion handling along 300 meters, especially in the Jineng Agung neighborhood. Meanwhile, for short-term handling, it will install the wave barrier independently.

Siberian serial killer cop convicted of dozens more murders

FRANKFURT - Germany was plunged into transport chaos Monday as most train services were halted by a railworkers’ strike over pay, affecting millions of passengers.

Inter-city and regional services as well as many urban commuter trains were cancelled throughout Europe’s biggest economy by the four-hour stoppage from 5:00 am (0400 GMT), Deutsche Bahn (DB) said.

The strike halted all high-speed ICE trains and other inter-city services as well as most cargo trains, and its ripple effects and delays were expected to continue well into the afternoon.

In the capital Berlin, where additionally the entire public announcement system broke down, frustrated commuters were asked to switch from S-Bahn commuter trains operated by DB to subways, buses or trams.

The strike came after talks broke down Saturday between the DB and the EVG railworkers’ union, which is demanding a 7.5-percent salary rise for 160,000 employees.

“The employer made offers which did not correspond to the demands of our members,” said EVG negotiator Regina Rusch-Ziemba.

DB shot back and described the

strike as a “completely unnecessary escalation”, insisting its offer was “attractive and met the main demands” of employees.

DB had offered a pay rise of 5.1 percent in two phases, with an option for staff to take extra time off instead, and a one-off payment of 500 euros ($570), the DPA national news agency reported.

Deutsche Bahn in a tweet also denied it had broken off the negotiations, charging that “the EVG left the talks and went on strike”.

“DB remains ready to continue the negotiations at any time. There is an open invitation for today.”

The strike also impacted DB customer services offices, meaning that in many stations passengers were left without information over loudspeakers or display boards.

DB said that purchased tickets would remain valid until next Sunday or could be refunded and urged passengers to delay travel where possible.

It also called on the union -which threatened follow-up strikes if necessary -- to return to the negotiating table quickly.

A DB spokeswoman said: “Parties that negotiate must be prepared to make concessions. DB has asked the EVG to continue the talks this afternoon.” (afp)

MOSCOW - A Siberian policeman who raped and killed women after offering them latenight rides was found guilty of dozens more murders on Monday, making him Russia’s most prolific serial killer of recent times.

A court in the city of Irkutsk found Mikhail Popkov guilty of 56 murders between 1992 and 2007, sentencing him to a second life term. He was already in prison after being convicted of killing 22 women in 2015.

Popkov offered rides to women late at night, sometimes in his police car, while off-duty around his city of Angarsk near Irkutsk.

He killed them using weapons including a hammer and an axe, then dumped their bodies in the woods, at the side of the road and in a local cemetery.

He was also found guilty of raping 10 of the women.

Popkov described himself as a “cleaner” who was purging his home city of prostitutes. All but one of his victims were women between the ages of 16 and 40. His other victim was a policeman.

The grey-haired 54-year-old appeared in court in prison uniform, his head bowed, Russian television showed. He will be sent to a prison

that is exclusively for convicts serving life terms, nicknamed the “Black Dolphin.” As part of his sentence -- a rare case in Russia of a convicted murderer being given a second life sentence -- Popkov was also deprived of his police pension.

- Covered his tracks Prosecutors have described Popkov as having “a pathological attraction to killing people” but he was ruled sane enough to stand trial.

Investigators had suspected a policeman was behind the crime because of the way the killer carefully covered his tracks.

The murders took place while he was a serving police officer and after he left the force in 1998.

Popkov was caught in 2012 after investigators re-examined the case and carried out DNA testing of residents, focusing on those who drove a make of car that matched tracks found at crime scenes.

In a 2017 interview with Russia’s

Meduza website, Popkov said he gave women lifts and targeted those who were drunk or living in a way he saw as immoral, saying that “any society condemns the behaviour of a debauched woman”.

While already in jail, he confessed to 59 further murders but was convicted only of 56 on Monday because investigators had not managed to prove three of the crimes took place, Interfax news agency reported, citing the court’s press service.

Investigators said they uncovered the remains of some of the victims’ bodies based on Popkov’s account, as well as finding murder weapons including axes, chisels and knives.

The number of killings for which he has been convicted exceeds the totals of several notorious murderers in Russia and the ex-Soviet Union.

BUSINESS Trump’s push for tariffs squeezes a weakening global economy

NEW YORK - The global economy was already showing signs of a slowdown when President Donald Trump reminded the world of his love of tariffs and sent a chill through financial markets.

“I am a Tariff Man,” Trump announced Tuesday to signal his devotion to import taxes — a remark that served to downplay the likelihood of ending his trade war with China. Stocks sank across the world, in part over fear that an escalation in tariffs would choke off economic growth and possibly send a global slowdown into a recession.

By Wednesday, Tariff Man had tweaked his message to suggest more optimism on the odds of forging a deal with President Xi Jinping. Their meeting last weekend at an economic conference in Argentina produced a 90-day truce, a suspension of further increases in U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods and a pledge by Beijing to buy more U.S. goods.

“Not to sound naive or anything, but I believe President Xi meant every word of what he said at our long and hopefully historic meeting,” Trump tweeted. “ALL subjects discussed!”

Still, Trump’s rattling of the global economy came at a precarious moment, with the economic outlook for 2019 dimming and concerns about a potential recession — if not next year then soon thereafter — rising.

The economic stimulus from U.S. tax cuts is beginning to fade. Britain is struggling to leave the European Union. Italy’s debt is widening. China is trying to navigate a slowdown after decades of unsustainably fast growth. Germany, Europe’s largest economy, shrank in its most recent quarter.

Global growth was already slated to slip to 3.5% next year from 3.7% even without accounting for the risks of escalating U.S. tariffs and China’s counter-tariffs, according to estimates by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, an intergovernmental think tank of 36 nations.

Now, businesses, consumers and nations must account for the chaotic confusion injected by Trump’s evolving and conflicting messages about his administration’s trade relationship with Beijing, said Ian Shepherdson, chief economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics.

Shepherdson worries that the president’s fondness for tariffs might itself be enough to further suppress growth.

“The uncertainty caused by the whipsawing of his trade stance means that business investment will be delayed or canceled, marginal hiring decisions will be postponed and potential overseas business partners will look elsewhere,” Shepherdson said.

Those tariffs were set to rise to 25% on Jan. 1.

The president had also threatened to impose tariffs on essentially all the remaining goods from China that aren’t already subject to his higher tariffs. The Trump-Xi dinner negotiations, though, led the two sides to hit pause and agree to 90 days of negotiations.

Trump says he wants to shrink a gaping $336 billion U.S. trade deficit with Beijing — the gap between how much America buys from China and how much it sells — and stop the Chinese from stealing or forcing the handover of U.S. technology and intellectual property. Complicating the problem is that all this is happening against the backdrop of weakening growth around the world. The economy of the 19 countries that use the euro currency, for example, stumbled in the July-September period. Its quarterly growth halved to 0.2%. Worries escalated after data showed that the economies of Italy and Germany, which relies on global exports, shrank during the quarter.

“The global picture is getting murkier, and that’ll impact the eurozone via trade and sentiment,” Erik Nielsen, chief economist at UniCredit bank, said in a note to clients.

Italy is suffering from uncertainty over its economic outlook under a new populist government. The government wants to raise public spending, thereby adding to its huge debt load of over 130% — and even

rekindling concerns of a return of Europe’s debt crisis. Brexit, meanwhile, is an unknown, with Britain in the midst of political turmoil. It’s possible that it could leave the EU without any deal on future relations involving trade. That’s a worst-case scenario that would immediately establish tariffs and customs checks on hundreds of billions of dollars in exports between Britain and the 27 other EU nations.

White House aides have suggested that Trump is promoting tariffs merely as a tool to forge agreements that would actually eliminate all import taxes. And at the opening of this week, the administration was already claiming progress with China on the purchase of $1.2 trillion worth of U.S. goods — even though White House officials couldn’t supply any meaningful details.

“President Trump regards himself as a trade reformer,” Larry Kudlow, director of the White House National Economic Council, told reporters Monday. “He wants a world of zero tariffs and zero non-tariff barriers and zero subsidies.”

Then, on Tuesday, Trump seemed to thumb his nose at that White House talking point by dubbing himself “Tariff Man.” “When people or countries come in to raid the great wealth of our Nation,” he tweeted, “I want them to pay for the privilege of doing so.”

U.S. financial markets were closed Wednesday for the funeral of former President George H.W. Bush. But stock indexes in Britain, Germany, France, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Japan, Australia, South Korea and India tumbled.

The problem for the global economy is that tariffs tend to inflate prices, depress trade and reduce the incomes of everyday workers. That’s because companies must either absorb the higher costs created by tariffs or pass them on to their customers.

The Tax Foundation, a conservative think tank, studied the $42 billion of tariffs already imposed by Trump, which include taxes on steel, aluminum, washing machines and the duties being charged on Chinese imports.

Its analysis, released Wednesday, concluded that these tariffs had reduced incomes by an average of $146 for taxpayers who earn between $27,740 and $43,800. The tariffs also cut U.S. hiring by the equivalent of 94,300 full-time jobs.

If Trump proceeds with the additional tariffs he has threatened, the Tax Foundation analyst Erica York estimates that middleincome households would lose an additional $453.

“The bottom line: Tariffs don’t in fact make Americans richer,” York said. “Tariffs reduce incomes for American taxpayers, and the effect is greater for middle and lowerincome families.” (ap)

simultaneously and then gathers somewhere. He explained the ngelawang agung is not implemented by visiting one home to another, but walk to the ends of the village in accordance with the points of the compass. Local people call the procession nyatur desa.

“After doing nyatur desa, the eight sacred barongs gather in the middle (catus pata). Usually, the ngelawang agung is witnessed by the whole community around and outside the village,” he added. (kmb)

Weary Venezuelans in low-turnout win for ruling party

CARACAS - Venezuelans stayed away in droves Sunday from municipal elections, handing a victory to the ruling party -- but with just 27 percent turnout.

National Electoral Council chair Tibisay Lucena put the rate of abstention at 72.6 percent. As such, the ruling party won 142 of 156 jurisdictions in play, she said.

Some 20.7 million Venezuelans were eligible to vote. Lucena called it “a calm day of civic and democratic action.” The results were hardly a suprise: analysts had predicted record low turnout, citing mistrust in the process, the banning of opposition parties and widespread exhaustion amid the ongoing socioeconomic crisis.

The elections come one month before President Nicolas Maduro begins his second six-year term after winning an election in May termed illegitimate by political opponents, the European Union, the United States and most of Latin America.

Maduro said Venezuelans “were exercising their right to vote freely.”

But Beatriz Pallares, 56, told AFP at a mostly empty polling station in the opposition bastion Chacao that “it’s a sad day because people decided not to vote.”

But “I will never not exercise my right,” she added.

Interior Minister Nestor Reverol said 150,000 police and military personnel had been deployed to provide security at polling centers.

Maduro had wanted to strengthen institutional control as Venezuelans choose 2,459 members for 335 city councils. The opposition until now controlled a quarter of those councils.

Rebels demand Indonesia negotiate on Papua independence

Mukwege: Congolese ‘Doctor Miracle’ heals sexual atrocity victims

KINHASA - In the Democratic Republic of Congo, they call him “Doctor Miracle” for his surgical skill and dedication in helping women overcome the injuries and trauma of sexual abuse and rape.

Denis Mukwege is a crusading gynaecologist who has spent more than two decades treating appalling injuries inflicted on women in the DRC. He has also emerged as an excoriating critic of President Joseph Kabila, set to be replaced in pivotal elections on December 23.

A father of five, the tireless 63-year-old is an outspoken critic of the abuse of women in war and impunity for perpetrators.

He has repeatedly accused the world of failing to act.

“When one does not fight against an evil, it is like a cancer, it spreads and destroys the whole society,” he told AFP in a weekend interview.

The 2018 Nobel Peace laureate, who shares the prize with Yazidi activist Nadia Murad, has dedicated his award to all victims of sexual violence.

Mukwege’s Panzi hospital has treated tens of thousands of victims of sexual violence in his war-weary native province of South Kivu, part of an eastern region riven by a conflict involving government forces

and countless rebel groups.

His work was the subject of an acclaimed 2015 film titled “The Man Who Mends Women”.

“Denis Mukwege is the foremost, most unifying symbol, both nationally and internationally, of the struggle to end sexual violence in war and armed conflicts,” Nobel committee chairwoman Berit ReissAndersen said when the award was announced in October.

Mukwege resists talking of his work in terms of statistics, because “each woman raped is one woman too many,” and he fears people have become desensitised to the swelling toll.

But he said his hospital alone has treated more than 50,000 women and girls for injuries from sexual violence, while stressing that this is “just the tip of the iceberg”.

- ‘Atrocities on women’s bodies’ In his French autobiography titled “Plaidoyer pour la Vie” (Plea for Life), Mukwege relates the “depths of horror” he encountered

in South Kivu.

Mukwege recounted how rapists had inserted a gun into a woman’s vagina and fired.

“Her whole pelvis was destroyed.

I thought it was the work of a madman, but the same year I treated 45 similar cases,” he said of the incident in 1999 -- the year he set up Panzi hospital in the provincial capital Bukavu.

“I have witnessed mass atrocities committed against women’s bodies and I cannot remain with my arms folded because our common humanity calls on us to care for each other.”

The 450-bed Panzi hospital treats more than 3,500 women a year, though not all for sexual abuse.

It provides free consultations and performs reconstructive surgery on women who have suffered serious internal injuries.

Mukwege’s work has also put his own life on the line. He narrowly escaped an attack in October 2012 in which his guard was killed.

“We want them to know that we don’t need development, what we want is independence.”

“If Aceh and East Timor can get that opportunity, why don’t we?” said Sambom, who said he was speaking from an area near the border with neighboring Papua New Guinea.

National police chief Tito Karnavian estimated the strength of the armed group at not more than 50 people with about 20 weapons, and said more than 150 police and soldiers had been sent to restore security in Nduga district, a stronghold of the separatists.

Sambom, however, claimed the rebels have 29 operational area commands in Papua, each with 2,500 members.

“We vow to intensify our fight for independence with guerrilla hit-and-run attacks,” he said.(ap)

Indonesia concerns about live reef fish trade

JAKARTA - Indonesian Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Susi Pudjiastuti has expressed concern about the issue of consumed live reef fish which was very popular in the international market.

“The demand for consumed live reef fish continues to increase because of its huge economic value. It has even been demanded in a very large-scale industry. The reef fish is very vulnerable because it is easily overexploited,”

Minister Susi said in a press statement received by ANTARA here on Sunday.

Reef fish has long been a food commodity in great demand in various countries, especially Hong Kong and China.

However, the high interest and prices of reef fish have been creating an alarming trend of trade.

Minister Susi pointed out this issue while chairing a session at the International Coral Reef Initiative

(ICRI) General Meeting in Monaco on December 6, 2018.

In the presence of members of the Science and Conservation of Fish Aggregations (SCRFA) and the Nature Conservancy, Minister Susi affirmed the need to regulate and manage the sustainable consumption of live reef fish.

According to her, the consumption of live reef fish is closely related to the biodiversity preservation and endangered species. The

higher the demand for reef fish, the higher the pressure on coral reefs.

Over fishing is also considered to damage the coral reef ecosystem which results in the extinction of marine ecosystems that depend on coral reefs.

“Coral reefs as places for spawning and living places of some fish are also threatened.

Moreover, the live reef fish is also fished in destructive ways,” Susi continued, warning to avoid using

dynamite, potassium, bombs, for fishing as all of them can destroy coral reefs.

Minister Susi said as one of the Chairs of ICRI, Indonesia is obliged to voice sustainable management of coral reefs to promote increase socio-economic aspects of people living on the coast.

She added that the exploitation of consumed reef fish must be managed to maintain the sustainability of the fish and the coral reefs.(ant)

Kenyan men take first 17 places in Singapore marathon

SINGAPORE - Kenyans finished in the first 17 spots of the men’s Singapore marathon -- with winner Joshua Kipkorir completing the race about half an hour quicker than the fastest non-Kenyan.

Kipkorir -- 24, and competing in the Singapore marathon for the first time -- finished Sunday’s race in two hours, 12 minutes and 20 seconds, the second-fastest time

in the event’s history, according to organisers.

Felix Kirwa was second, a minute behind Kipkorir, while Andrew Kimtai was third.

The fastest non-Kenyan was Singaporean runner Soh Rui Yong, lagging far behind the winner, with a time of two hours, 41 minutes and 49 seconds. Kenyan runners also dominated the women’s event, bagging the top five spots.

Around 13,000 people took part in the 42-kilometre (26-mile) race.

The astonishing results underlined the dominance of Kenyans in marathons, with even Singapore’s tropical heat and humidity proving no barrier to success for runners who typically train at high altitudes. Last week Kenyan athlete Eliud Kipchoge -- who has been acclaimed as the greatest marathon runner of the modern era -- won

the International Association of Athletics Federations men’s 2018 award.

He has dominated marathon racing since making his debut in Hamburg in 2013. The Olympic champion set a new marathon world record in Berlin in September with a time of two hours, one minute and 39 seconds. (afp)

Badminton’s Lee to seek cancer all-clear before resuming training

KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysian badminton great Lee Chong Wei is to seek the all-clear from his doctors in Taiwan after his treatment for nose cancer, and probably won’t be back on the courts until next month, reports said Monday. Despite earlier comments from Malaysia’s badminton chief that Lee’s return to the training courts was imminent, the 36-year-old said he still needed the green light from his specialists.

The three-time Olympic silvermedallist has spent nearly five months on the sidelines after being diagnosed with early-stage nose cancer and undergoing proton therapy and chemotherapy in Taiwan.

“I need to go for my follow-up check-up with doctors in Taiwan

later this month, and see what they say then,” Lee was quoted as saying

by The Star newspaper, adding that January looked like the earliest he could come back.

“I’ve been constantly keeping in touch with them and they have reminded me to take it easy and not to rush it because this is not an injury. It takes time.”

The former long-time world number one also cast doubt on whether he will make good on his plan to make a competitive comeback at the All England Open in March.

“My target is the All England, but I can’t really be sure I will come back by then,” said Lee. “My desire is there. But I can’t force things to happen. Everything

depends on my condition as I’ve been out for almost five months now since I underwent my treatment in July.”

The player, now down at 15th in the world rankings, has said that he is still eying an elusive Olympic gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Games. Lee’s unsuccessful attempts to capture Malaysia’s first ever Olympic gold medal, at three consecutive Summer Games, were followed avidly back home, as was his long-running rivalry with Chinese superstar Lin Dan. His last shot at the Olympic title at Rio 2016 ended in a crushing failure when the Malaysian lost out to China’s Chen Long in a nail-biting final.

Nose cancer is perhaps the biggest blow suffered by Lee, who was

Spurs face make-or-break Barcelona clash

Tottenham are sitting pretty in the Premier League but face a potentially season-defining match against Barcelona in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men have amassed 36 points from 16 Premier League matches, with 12 wins, leaving them in third place behind Liverpool and Manchester City.

That they have managed that despite playing in their temporary home of Wembley and after a World Cup in which so many of their players featured until the final weekend, makes their achievement all the more impressive.

However, with City and Liverpool in such rampant form, few expect Spurs to win the Premier League, putting increased emphasis on their match against the Spanish league leaders in Group B. Pochettino must somehow find a way past Lionel Messi’s Barcelona to reach the knockout stages but he remains positive ahead of the daunting trip to the Camp Nou to face the five-time European champions.

“It will be a massive game. They have qualified for the next stage but in the Champions League no one is going to give a present,” said the Argentine, who left Harry Kane out of the starting line-up for the 2-0 win away to Leicester on Saturday.

“We need to win and deserve to win. The mentality is going to be 200

percent to try to win. We are going to arrive in the best condition, Barcelona are one of the best teams in Europe.”

Spurs took just one point from their first three games in Group B, losing to Inter Milan and Barcelona and drawing with PSV. But they beat PSV at home and then scored late through Christian Eriksen to beat Inter 1-0 at Wembley, leaving them in second place on seven points, the same as the Italians.

With Barcelona already guaranteed to top the group, Spurs must match Inter’s result to guarantee progress.

- ‘Next level’ Pochettino has in the past talked about how only the Premier League or Champions League title will take the club to the “next level”, even though the trophy cabinet has been empty since 2008.

Spurs have played in the Champions League for the past three seasons but they cannot boast the pedigree or history of Manchester United or Liverpool in Europe’s top club competition.

They have only progressed beyond the Champions League group stage twice, reaching the quarter-finals in

2011. Barcelona, who beat Spurs 4-2 at Wembley, have already made sure of winning their Champions League group for a record 12th successive season.

Dauntingly for Spurs, Barca are unbeaten in 28 Champions League home matches and the Londoners will not be encouraged by the fact that the Spaniards have only lost two home matches in 33 against English opponents.

But Spurs themselves, with a vibrant collection of attacking players including Kane, Eriksen, Dele Alli and Son Heung-min, have won eight out of their past nine fixtures in all competitions and will be hoping that Ernesto Valverde’s side take their foot off the gas.

Beating the Catalan club would be particularly sweet for Pochettino, a former player and coach at Barcelona’s city rivals Espanyol. The Argentine earned his first win as a manager in a derby at the Camp Nou in 2009.

Shakhtar fans have become used to having to travel to home games. For the last two years, the club has been sheltering in Kharkiv, a mere 300 kilometres from their Donbass Arena in Donetsk, which they abandoned in 2014 when the region fell under the control of Russia-backed separatists.

Kharkiv was a step up for the fans as Shakhtar has spent two years travelling over 1,200 kilometres to play home games in Lviv on the other side of the country.

Shakhtar’s coach Paulo Fonseca has urged fans to support the team in the capital.

“We regret that the match venue has been changed, causing inconvenience for our fans who planned to attend the match in Kharkiv... We hope for your support in Kiev!” the Portuguese manager said in a statement to

the fans on the club website.

The club even offered to book the best seats at the 70,000-seat Olympic Stadium in Kiev for those supporters who bought tickets to the Kharkiv arena, but now are willing to come to the capital.

The problem for the fans is twofold. Distance is certainly a factor but the other stumbling block for them is that they will have to play in the capital, home of their longtime rival Dynamo Kiev. They can hardly rely on local support.

“It would be better to play in Kharkiv. There are more of our fans there,” Shakhtar fan Sergiy Tsvelyov told AFP.”I myself planned to go (to Kharkiv).

But it will be very difficult for me to go to Kiev,” the 20-yearold student, who lives in a small town in eastern Ukraine, said.(afp)

Shakhtar fans have become used to having to travel to home games. For the last two years, the club has been sheltering in Kharkiv, a mere 300 kilometres from their Donbass Arena in Donetsk, which they abandoned in 2014 when the region fell under the control of Russia-backed separatists.

Kharkiv was a step up for the fans as Shakhtar has spent two years travelling over 1,200 kilometres to play home games in Lviv on the other side of the country.

Shakhtar’s coach Paulo Fonseca has urged fans to support the team in the capital.

“We regret that the match venue has been changed, causing inconvenience for our fans who planned to attend the match in Kharkiv... We hope for your support in Kiev!” the Portuguese manager said in a statement to

the fans on the club website.

The club even offered to book the best seats at the 70,000-seat Olympic Stadium in Kiev for those supporters who bought tickets to the Kharkiv arena, but now are willing to come to the capital.

The problem for the fans is twofold. Distance is certainly a factor but the other stumbling block for them is that they will have to play in the capital, home of their longtime rival Dynamo Kiev. They can hardly rely on local support.

“It would be better to play in Kharkiv. There are more of our fans there,” Shakhtar fan Sergiy Tsvelyov told AFP.”I myself planned to go (to Kharkiv).

But it will be very difficult for me to go to Kiev,” the 20-yearold student, who lives in a small town in eastern Ukraine, said.(afp)

Kenyan men take first 17 places in Singapore marathon

SINGAPORE - Kenyans finished in the first 17 spots of the men’s Singapore marathon -- with winner Joshua Kipkorir completing the race about half an hour quicker than the fastest non-Kenyan.

Kipkorir -- 24, and competing in the Singapore marathon for the first time -- finished Sunday’s race in two hours, 12 minutes and 20 seconds, the second-fastest time

in the event’s history, according to organisers.

Felix Kirwa was second, a minute behind Kipkorir, while Andrew Kimtai was third.

The fastest non-Kenyan was Singaporean runner Soh Rui Yong, lagging far behind the winner, with a time of two hours, 41 minutes and 49 seconds. Kenyan runners also dominated the women’s event, bagging the top five spots.

Around 13,000 people took part in the 42-kilometre (26-mile) race.

The astonishing results underlined the dominance of Kenyans in marathons, with even Singapore’s tropical heat and humidity proving no barrier to success for runners who typically train at high altitudes. Last week Kenyan athlete Eliud Kipchoge -- who has been acclaimed as the greatest marathon runner of the modern era -- won

the International Association of Athletics Federations men’s 2018 award.

Badminton’s Lee to seek cancer all-clear before resuming training

KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysian badminton great Lee Chong Wei is to seek the all-clear from his doctors in Taiwan after his treatment for nose cancer, and probably won’t be back on the courts until next month, reports said Monday. Despite earlier comments from Malaysia’s badminton chief that Lee’s return to the training courts was imminent, the 36-year-old said he still needed the green light from his specialists.

The three-time Olympic silvermedallist has spent nearly five months on the sidelines after being diagnosed with early-stage nose cancer and undergoing proton therapy and chemotherapy in Taiwan.

“I need to go for my follow-up check-up with doctors in Taiwan

later this month, and see what they say then,” Lee was quoted as saying

by The Star newspaper, adding that January looked like the earliest he could come back.

“I’ve been constantly keeping in touch with them and they have reminded me to take it easy and not to rush it because this is not an injury. It takes time.”

The former long-time world number one also cast doubt on whether he will make good on his plan to make a competitive comeback at the All England Open in March.

“My target is the All England, but I can’t really be sure I will come back by then,” said Lee. “My desire is there. But I can’t force things to happen. Everything

depends on my condition as I’ve been out for almost five months now since I underwent my treatment in July.”

The player, now down at 15th in the world rankings, has said that he is still eying an elusive Olympic gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Games. Lee’s unsuccessful attempts to capture Malaysia’s first ever Olympic gold medal, at three consecutive Summer Games, were followed avidly back home, as was his long-running rivalry with Chinese superstar Lin Dan. Weary Venezuelans in low-turnout win for ruling party

CARACAS - Venezuelans stayed away in droves Sunday from municipal elections, handing a victory to the ruling party -- but with just 27 percent turnout.

National Electoral Council chair Tibisay Lucena put the rate of abstention at 72.6 percent. As such, the ruling party won 142 of 156 jurisdictions in play, she said.

Some 20.7 million Venezuelans were eligible to vote. Lucena called it “a calm day of civic and democratic action.” The results were hardly a suprise: analysts had predicted record low turnout, citing mistrust in the process, the banning of opposition parties and widespread exhaustion amid the ongoing socioeconomic crisis.

The elections come one month before President Nicolas Maduro begins his second six-year term after winning an election in May termed illegitimate by political opponents, the European Union, the United States and most of Latin America.

Maduro said Venezuelans “were exercising their right to vote freely.”

But Beatriz Pallares, 56, told AFP at a mostly empty polling station in the opposition bastion Chacao that “it’s a sad day because people decided not to vote.”

But “I will never not exercise my right,” she added.

Interior Minister Nestor Reverol said 150,000 police and military personnel had been deployed to provide security at polling centers.

Maduro had wanted to strengthen institutional control as Venezuelans choose 2,459 members for 335 city councils. The opposition until now controlled a quarter of those councils.

Rebels demand Indonesia negotiate on Papua independence

JAKARTA — Rebels in Indonesia’s Papua province demanded that the government hold negotiations on their territory’s self-determination and warned of more attacks following a raid on a construction site that left at least 16 dead.

An insurgency has simmered in Papua since the early 1960s, when Indonesia annexed the region that was a former Dutch colony. It was formally incorporated into Indonesia in 1969 after a U.N.-sponsored ballot that was

seen as a sham by many.

Mukwege: Congolese ‘Doctor Miracle’ heals sexual atrocity victims

KINHASA - In the Democratic Republic of Congo, they call him “Doctor Miracle” for his surgical skill and dedication in helping women overcome the injuries and trauma of sexual abuse and rape.

Denis Mukwege is a crusading gynaecologist who has spent more than two decades treating appalling injuries inflicted on women in the DRC. He has also emerged as an excoriating critic of President Joseph Kabila, set to be replaced in pivotal elections on December 23.

A father of five, the tireless 63-year-old is an outspoken critic of the abuse of women in war and impunity for perpetrators.

He has repeatedly accused the world of failing to act.

“When one does not fight against an evil, it is like a cancer, it spreads and destroys the whole society,” he told AFP in a weekend interview.

The 2018 Nobel Peace laureate, who shares the prize with Yazidi activist Nadia Murad, has dedicated his award to all victims of sexual violence.

Mukwege’s Panzi hospital has treated tens of thousands of victims of sexual violence in his war-weary native province of South Kivu, part of an eastern region riven by a conflict involving government forces

and countless rebel groups.

His work was the subject of an acclaimed 2015 film titled “The Man Who Mends Women”.

“Denis Mukwege is the foremost, most unifying symbol, both nationally and internationally, of the struggle to end sexual violence in war and armed conflicts,” Nobel committee chairwoman Berit ReissAndersen said when the award was announced in October.

Mukwege resists talking of his work in terms of statistics, because “each woman raped is one woman too many,” and he fears people have become desensitised to the swelling toll.

But he said his hospital alone has treated more than 50,000 women and girls for injuries from sexual violence, while stressing that this is “just the tip of the iceberg”.

- ‘Atrocities on women’s bodies’ In his French autobiography titled “Plaidoyer pour la Vie” (Plea for Life), Mukwege relates the “depths of horror” he encountered

in South Kivu.

Mukwege recounted how rapists had inserted a gun into a woman’s vagina and fired.

“Her whole pelvis was destroyed.

I thought it was the work of a madman, but the same year I treated 45 similar cases,” he said of the incident in 1999 -- the year he set up Panzi hospital in the provincial capital Bukavu.

“I have witnessed mass atrocities committed against women’s bodies and I cannot remain with my arms folded because our common humanity calls on us to care for each other.”

The 450-bed Panzi hospital treats more than 3,500 women a year, though not all for sexual abuse.

It provides free consultations and performs reconstructive surgery on women who have suffered serious internal injuries.

Mukwege’s work has also put his own life on the line. He narrowly escaped an attack in October 2012 in which his guard was killed.

He now lives under the permanent protection of UN peacekeepers at his hospital. (afp)

They have rescued 24, including seven workers, and are searching for two missing as well as the bodies of three others. A soldier at a military post near the site was also killed.

Indonesian President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has ordered the military and police to arrest the perpetrators of the worst separatist attack during his administration and said he will not tolerate “armed criminals” in Papua or the rest of the country.

The road, which will stretch from Sorong in West Papua province to Merauke in Papua province, is expected to be completed next year and help boost economic development in both provinces.

“Trans-Papua road projects are being carried out by Indonesian military and that is a risk they must bear,” Sambom said.

“We want them to know that we don’t need development, what we want is independence.”

of sending Javanese and other Indonesians to settle in Papua to dilute the number of indigenous people, is now trying to spur economic development to dampen the separatist movement.

“Our leaders have declared a war zone since last year and warned that the trans-Papua road construction should be stopped, but Indonesia has ignored it,” Sambom said.

He called for the government to agree to peace talks similar to ones that led to another province, Aceh, becoming semiautonomous, or a “real referendum” on independence as occurred in the former Indonesian territory of East Timor.

“If Aceh and East Timor can get that opportunity, why don’t we?” said Sambom, who said he was speaking from an area near the border with neighboring Papua New Guinea.

National police chief Tito Karnavian estimated the strength of the armed group at not more than 50 people with about 20 weapons, and said more than 150 police and soldiers had been sent to restore security in Nduga district, a stronghold of the separatists.

Sambom, however, claimed the rebels have 29 operational area commands in Papua, each with 2,500 members.

“We vow to intensify our fight for independence with guerrilla hit-and-run attacks,” he said.(ap)

Indonesia concerns about live reef fish trade

JAKARTA - Indonesian Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Susi Pudjiastuti has expressed concern about the issue of consumed live reef fish which was very popular in the international market.

“The demand for consumed live reef fish continues to increase because of its huge economic value. It has even been demanded in a very large-scale industry. The reef fish is very vulnerable because it is easily overexploited,”

Minister Susi said in a press statement received by ANTARA here on Sunday.

Reef fish has long been a food commodity in great demand in various countries, especially Hong Kong and China.

However, the high interest and prices of reef fish have been creating an alarming trend of trade.

Minister Susi pointed out this issue while chairing a session at the International Coral Reef Initiative

(ICRI) General Meeting in Monaco on December 6, 2018.

In the presence of members of the Science and Conservation of Fish Aggregations (SCRFA) and the Nature Conservancy, Minister Susi affirmed the need to regulate and manage the sustainable consumption of live reef fish.

According to her, the consumption of live reef fish is closely related to the biodiversity preservation and endangered species. The

higher the demand for reef fish, the higher the pressure on coral reefs.

Over fishing is also considered to damage the coral reef ecosystem which results in the extinction of marine ecosystems that depend on coral reefs.

“Coral reefs as places for spawning and living places of some fish are also threatened.

Moreover, the live reef fish is also fished in destructive ways,” Susi continued, warning to avoid using

dynamite, potassium, bombs, for fishing as all of them can destroy coral reefs.

Minister Susi said as one of the Chairs of ICRI, Indonesia is obliged to voice sustainable management of coral reefs to promote increase socio-economic aspects of people living on the coast.

BUSINESS Trump’s push for tariffs squeezes a weakening global economy

NEW YORK - The global economy was already showing signs of a slowdown when President Donald Trump reminded the world of his love of tariffs and sent a chill through financial markets.

“I am a Tariff Man,” Trump announced Tuesday to signal his devotion to import taxes — a remark that served to downplay the likelihood of ending his trade war with China. Stocks sank across the world, in part over fear that an escalation in tariffs would choke off economic growth and possibly send a global slowdown into a recession.

By Wednesday, Tariff Man had tweaked his message to suggest more optimism on the odds of forging a deal with President Xi Jinping. Their meeting last weekend at an economic conference in Argentina produced a 90-day truce, a suspension of further increases in U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods and a pledge by Beijing to buy more U.S. goods.

“Not to sound naive or anything, but I believe President Xi meant every word of what he said at our long and hopefully historic meeting,” Trump tweeted. “ALL subjects discussed!”

Still, Trump’s rattling of the global economy came at a precarious moment, with the economic outlook for 2019 dimming and concerns about a potential recession — if not next year then soon thereafter — rising.

The economic stimulus from U.S. tax cuts is beginning to fade. Britain is struggling to leave the European Union. Italy’s debt is widening. China is trying to navigate a slowdown after decades of unsustainably fast growth. Germany, Europe’s largest economy, shrank in its most recent quarter.

Global growth was already slated to slip to 3.5% next year from 3.7% even without accounting for the risks of escalating U.S. tariffs and China’s counter-tariffs, according to estimates by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, an intergovernmental think tank of 36 nations.

Now, businesses, consumers and nations must account for the chaotic confusion injected by Trump’s evolving and conflicting messages about his administration’s trade relationship with Beijing, said Ian Shepherdson, chief economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics.

Shepherdson worries that the president’s fondness for tariffs might itself be enough to further suppress growth.

“The uncertainty caused by the whipsawing of his trade stance means that business investment will be delayed or canceled, marginal hiring decisions will be postponed and potential overseas business partners will look elsewhere,” Shepherdson said.

Those tariffs were set to rise to 25% on Jan. 1.

The president had also threatened to impose tariffs on essentially all the remaining goods from China that aren’t already subject to his higher tariffs. The Trump-Xi dinner negotiations, though, led the two sides to hit pause and agree to 90 days of negotiations.

Trump says he wants to shrink a gaping $336 billion U.S. trade deficit with Beijing — the gap between how much America buys from China and how much it sells — and stop the Chinese from stealing or forcing the handover of U.S. technology and intellectual property. Complicating the problem is that all this is happening against the backdrop of weakening growth around the world. The economy of the 19 countries that use the euro currency, for example, stumbled in the July-September period. Its quarterly growth halved to 0.2%. Worries escalated after data showed that the economies of Italy and Germany, which relies on global exports, shrank during the quarter.

“The global picture is getting murkier, and that’ll impact the eurozone via trade and sentiment,” Erik Nielsen, chief economist at UniCredit bank, said in a note to clients.

Italy is suffering from uncertainty over its economic outlook under a new populist government. The government wants to raise public spending, thereby adding to its huge debt load of over 130% — and even

rekindling concerns of a return of Europe’s debt crisis. Brexit, meanwhile, is an unknown, with Britain in the midst of political turmoil. It’s possible that it could leave the EU without any deal on future relations involving trade. That’s a worst-case scenario that would immediately establish tariffs and customs checks on hundreds of billions of dollars in exports between Britain and the 27 other EU nations.

White House aides have suggested that Trump is promoting tariffs merely as a tool to forge agreements that would actually eliminate all import taxes. And at the opening of this week, the administration was already claiming progress with China on the purchase of $1.2 trillion worth of U.S. goods — even though White House officials couldn’t supply any meaningful details.

“President Trump regards himself as a trade reformer,” Larry Kudlow, director of the White House National Economic Council, told reporters Monday. “He wants a world of zero tariffs and zero non-tariff barriers and zero subsidies.”

Then, on Tuesday, Trump seemed to thumb his nose at that White House talking point by dubbing himself “Tariff Man.” “When people or countries come in to raid the great wealth of our Nation,” he tweeted, “I want them to pay for the privilege of doing so.”

U.S. financial markets were closed Wednesday for the funeral of former President George H.W. Bush. But stock indexes in Britain, Germany, France, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Japan, Australia, South Korea and India tumbled.

The problem for the global economy is that tariffs tend to inflate prices, depress trade and reduce the incomes of everyday workers. That’s because companies must either absorb the higher costs created by tariffs or pass them on to their customers.

The Tax Foundation, a conservative think tank, studied the $42 billion of tariffs already imposed by Trump, which include taxes on steel, aluminum, washing machines and the duties being charged on Chinese imports.

Its analysis, released Wednesday, concluded that these tariffs had reduced incomes by an average of $146 for taxpayers who earn between $27,740 and $43,800. The tariffs also cut U.S. hiring by the equivalent of 94,300 full-time jobs.

If Trump proceeds with the additional tariffs he has threatened, the Tax Foundation analyst Erica York estimates that middleincome households would lose an additional $453.

“The bottom line: Tariffs don’t in fact make Americans richer,” York said. “Tariffs reduce incomes for American taxpayers, and the effect is greater for middle and lowerincome families.” (ap)

simultaneously and then gathers somewhere. He explained the ngelawang agung is not implemented by visiting one home to another, but walk to the ends of the village in accordance with the points of the compass. Local people call the procession nyatur desa.

Monkeys grab people’s agricultural products

After receiving the aspiration, Chairman of Commission II, Komang Suantara, said that he immediately continued his aspirations to the Bali Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) recently.

The agency provided several ways to deal with this monkey pest, starting from conducting a mapping, conservation to elimination and castration efforts.

“Furthermore, the Bali BKSDA will coordinate with the Agriculture Agency (Animal Husbandry Division) to immediately take action,” he said.

The monkey pests do not only attack in the hills of Dawan subdis-

trict, but also in hilly areas at Banjarangkan subdistrict. However, so far there have been no reports regarding the increase in monkey populations in Banjarangkan. In the meeting, Suantara hoped the BKSDA Bali can move quickly to deal with it.

The parliament in principle have trusted the handling entirely to the agency. There are several options on offer whether to carry out elimination efforts or injections, or maybe they can be removed.

Rare cockatoos In the meeting, the BKSDA Bali also requested the support in the efforts to preserve endangered species. Nusa Penida archipelago, for instance, other than being known for preserving Bali Starling, there are also other rare animals, such as tiny parrots. This animal is apparently a rare species native to Nusa Penida which has its own uniqueness like its tiny shape, white fur and slightly blackish.

NEGARA - Condition of the coast in the Asri and Jineng Agung neighborhoods, Gilimanuk village, is now even more alarming. It happens because the abrasion is getting worse.

The beach that was once very far from settlement is now right behind the homes of residents.

This condition is experienced by a disadvantaged widow included in the list of poor family, Ketut Sukradani, 46, in the Asri neighborhood of Gilimanuk.

Due to being hit by abrasion, the house owned by this mother of one child is now cracked. Moreover, the room and kitchen’s ceiling of the assistance house has broken down for a long time.

As seen in the field on Saturday (Dec. 8), the house of Ketut Sukradani has undergone damages on plaited bamboo wall having been tattered and half broken. In order to be able to sleep, this mother and child must support the ceiling with bamboo so as not to fall.

Previously, he also said that for the long term handling, the village government had applied for abrasion handling along 300 meters, especially in the Jineng Agung neighborhood. Meanwhile, for short-term handling, it will install the wave barrier independently.

Siberian serial killer cop convicted of dozens more murders

FRANKFURT - Germany was plunged into transport chaos Monday as most train services were halted by a railworkers’ strike over pay, affecting millions of passengers.

Inter-city and regional services as well as many urban commuter trains were cancelled throughout Europe’s biggest economy by the four-hour stoppage from 5:00 am (0400 GMT), Deutsche Bahn (DB) said.

The strike halted all high-speed ICE trains and other inter-city services as well as most cargo trains, and its ripple effects and delays were expected to continue well into the afternoon.

In the capital Berlin, where additionally the entire public announcement system broke down, frustrated commuters were asked to switch from S-Bahn commuter trains operated by DB to subways, buses or trams.

The strike came after talks broke down Saturday between the DB and the EVG railworkers’ union, which is demanding a 7.5-percent salary rise for 160,000 employees.

“The employer made offers which did not correspond to the demands of our members,” said EVG negotiator Regina Rusch-Ziemba.

DB shot back and described the

strike as a “completely unnecessary escalation”, insisting its offer was “attractive and met the main demands” of employees.

DB had offered a pay rise of 5.1 percent in two phases, with an option for staff to take extra time off instead, and a one-off payment of 500 euros ($570), the DPA national news agency reported.

Deutsche Bahn in a tweet also denied it had broken off the negotiations, charging that “the EVG left the talks and went on strike”.

“DB remains ready to continue the negotiations at any time. There is an open invitation for today.”

The strike also impacted DB customer services offices, meaning that in many stations passengers were left without information over loudspeakers or display boards.

DB said that purchased tickets would remain valid until next Sunday or could be refunded and urged passengers to delay travel where possible.

It also called on the union -which threatened follow-up strikes if necessary -- to return to the negotiating table quickly.

A DB spokeswoman said: “Parties that negotiate must be prepared to make concessions. DB has asked the EVG to continue the talks this afternoon.” (afp)

MOSCOW - A Siberian policeman who raped and killed women after offering them latenight rides was found guilty of dozens more murders on Monday, making him Russia’s most prolific serial killer of recent times.

A court in the city of Irkutsk found Mikhail Popkov guilty of 56 murders between 1992 and 2007, sentencing him to a second life term. He was already in prison after being convicted of killing 22 women in 2015.

Popkov offered rides to women late at night, sometimes in his police car, while off-duty around his city of Angarsk near Irkutsk.

He killed them using weapons including a hammer and an axe, then dumped their bodies in the woods, at the side of the road and in a local cemetery.

He was also found guilty of raping 10 of the women.

Popkov described himself as a “cleaner” who was purging his home city of prostitutes. All but one of his victims were women between the ages of 16 and 40. His other victim was a policeman.

The grey-haired 54-year-old appeared in court in prison uniform, his head bowed, Russian television showed. He will be sent to a prison

that is exclusively for convicts serving life terms, nicknamed the “Black Dolphin.” As part of his sentence -- a rare case in Russia of a convicted murderer being given a second life sentence -- Popkov was also deprived of his police pension.

- Covered his tracks Prosecutors have described Popkov as having “a pathological attraction to killing people” but he was ruled sane enough to stand trial.

Investigators had suspected a policeman was behind the crime because of the way the killer carefully covered his tracks.

The murders took place while he was a serving police officer and after he left the force in 1998.

Popkov was caught in 2012 after investigators re-examined the case and carried out DNA testing of residents, focusing on those who drove a make of car that matched tracks found at crime scenes.

In a 2017 interview with Russia’s

Meduza website, Popkov said he gave women lifts and targeted those who were drunk or living in a way he saw as immoral, saying that “any society condemns the behaviour of a debauched woman”.

While already in jail, he confessed to 59 further murders but was convicted only of 56 on Monday because investigators had not managed to prove three of the crimes took place, Interfax news agency reported, citing the court’s press service.

Investigators said they uncovered the remains of some of the victims’ bodies based on Popkov’s account, as well as finding murder weapons including axes, chisels and knives.

The number of killings for which he has been convicted exceeds the totals of several notorious murderers in Russia and the ex-Soviet Union.

CALIFORNIA - Magnetism transforms a weird new material from soft to rigid in a split second. This metamaterial — a synthetic structure designed to behave in ways that natural materials don’t — comprises a gridlike network of plastic tubes filled with fluid that becomes more viscous in a magnetic field, causing the tubes to firm up. The material could help make more adaptable robots or body armor, researchers report online December 7 in Science Advances.

Christopher Spadaccini, a materials engineer at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California, and colleagues 3-D printed lattices composed of plastic struts 5 millimeters long and injected them with a mixture

of tiny iron particles and oil. In the absence of a magnetic field, the iron microparticles remain scattered randomly throughout the oil, so the liquid is runny. But close to a magnet, these iron microparticles align into chains

along the magnetic field lines, making the fluid viscous and the lattices stiffer.

A solid hunk of iron microparticle–filled material would be heavy and expensive to make. Building tubular structures that are mostly open

space makes this tunable material more lightweight, says coauthor Julie Jackson, an engineer at Lawrence Livermore.

The researchers tested individual “unit cells” of the new material — hollow, die-shaped structures that can collectively form the larger lattices.

Moving one unit cell from about eight centimeters to one centimeter away from a magnet increased its stiffness by about 62 percent.

In future technologies, this material could be paired with devices that use electricity to generate magnetic fields, called electromagnets. Material that becomes softer or stiffer on demand could be used to make next-generation sports pads or helmets with tunable impact absorption, Jackson says. Robots with changeable stiffness could squeeze into small spaces, but then be sturdy enough to carry or move other objects. (IBP/net)

MANGUPURA — As a measure to support the coastal merchant community in the Nusa Dua area to continuously improve their capabilities in culinary matters, the Indonesia Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) returned to provide training and

guidance through the Community Development Partnership program on Friday (Dec. 7). They were gathered to take part in the cooking class provided by Indonesia Chef Association.

According to the Operational Division Head of ITDC Nusa

Dua, Made Pariwijaya, the traders are expected to be able to increase their capacity and capability in providing food and beverage. Through this cooking class, they are trained to improve service standards and quality standards presented by merchant

associations.

Pariwijaya said the training is very important to create a balance, equality and equal distribution of income in the Nusa Dua region. Thus, it is creating complementary relationships because it is realized ITDC will not progress without the support of the supporting community.

“Through this training, in the future the menu of local cuisine in Nusa Dua will be standardized, whoever serves the traders is expected to be able to maintain the present standards,” he concluded.

He planned to create a special menu specifically for Nusa Dua featured in accordance with regional characteristics and potential. By that way, people will remember when they come to Nusa Dua and they must know their typical menus. “For this time, we have trained about 30 people from three communities, each of which has 10 people, namely the Sekar Sari association, Peninsula and Yasa Segara,” he said.

He admitted the training and coaching will be carried out continuously because in the future the traders would be made a kind of street food festival or Balinese festival. They will also

be involved more in the Nusa Dua Heritage Food Festival, Nusa Dua Fiesta and other events in Nusa Dua. “We are confident it will increasingly make the Peninsula Island more attractive, which will have an impact on regional occupancy,” he assured.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the LPM Benoa, Wayan Ambara Putra, who was present at the opening, hoped the beach merchant community will later be able to improve food and service standards. The training is expected to further enrich the food variants presented. history of the subak development in Bali as well as a collection of traditional agricultural tools, later the Gianyar Subak Museum will also provide non-permanent exhibition spaces, such as paintings, crafts and culinary tourism.

Kevin Hart steps down as Oscars host over homophobic tweets CALIFORNIA - Kevin Hart has stepped down as host of the Oscars next year after tweets emerged in which he used homophobic slurs.

The decision comes just three days after he was announced as host of the 91st Academy Awards ceremony.

Tweets originally posted between 2009 and 2011 resurfaced shortly after he was confirmed for the job, containing offensive language towards the LGBT community.

The actor and comedian’s response to the outcry attracted a further backlash, as he wrote on Instagram that critics should “stop being negative”.

In an accompanying video, Hart said he wasn’t going to “let the craziness frustrate me” and added that he “loves everybody”.

In a second video, Hart said the Academy had asked him to apologise over the tweets but he “chose to pass” as he has “addressed this

several times before”.

He said the “same energy that went into finding those old tweets could be the same energy put into finding the response” and that he did not want to have to explain again that he is a different person now.

“I passed on the apology,” he said. “The reason why I passed is because I’ve addressed this several times. This is not the first time this has come up. I’ve addressed it, I’ve spoken on it. I’ve said where the rights and wrongs were.

“I’ve said who I am now versus who I was then. I’ve done it, I’ve done it. I’m not going to continue to go back and tap into the days of old.

I’ve moved on, I’m in a completely different space in my life.

Grammy Awards: Kendrick Lamar, Drake, Cardi B and Lady Gaga among biggest nominees

LOS ANGELES - Kendrick Lamar and Drake lead the nominations for next year’s Grammy Awards, with seven nods each.

Kevin Hart has stepped down just days after he was announced as host.

Cardi B, Lady Gaga, HER, Maren Morris, Childish Gambino, producer Sounwave and engineer Mike Bozzi all have five nominations each. While male acts dominated the nominations in the main categories last year, five of this year’s best album nominees are women, with Cardi B, Brandi Carlile, HER, Janelle Monae and Kacey Musgraves competing against Drake, Post Malone and the Black Panther soundtrack.

In the best new artist category, six of the eight nominees are also

women, with British stars Dua Lipa and Jorja Smith nominated alongside HER, Chloe x Halle, Margo Price and Bebe Rexha, as well as Luke Combs and rock band Greta Van Fleet.

Six songs are up for both record and song of the year: Lamar and SZA’s All the Stars; Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s Shallow, from the A Star Is Born soundtrack; Childish Gambino’s This Is America; Drake’s God’s Plan; Zedd, Maren Morris and Grey’s The Middle; and Carlile’s The Joke.

River edge out Boca after extra time to win Copa Libertadores

River Plate won the Copa Libertadores by beating their fiercest rivals Boca Juniors 3-1 after extra time on Sunday, bringing an end to a final tainted by violence and moved more than six thousand miles away from Argentina.

Boca took the lead through Dario Benedetto but Lucas Pratto equalised before Juan Quintero and Gonzalo Martinez scored in extra time, aided by Wilmar Barrios being sent off, to win a fittingly dramatic contest for River.

It means River prevailed 5-3 on aggregate after the first leg finished 2-2 and reclaim the trophy they had last won in 2015, lifting it for the

fourth time in their history.

“We have shown we are superior,” River’s Leonardo Ponzio said. “After trying to stay quiet about everything that happened, we showed on the pitch we were better.”
