Actress and Glamour’s “The Hollywood Hero” honoree, Reese Witherspoon, attends the 25th Annual Glamour Women of the Year Awards at Carnegie Hall on Monday, Nov. 9, 2015, in New York.
Jenner, one of a group of honorees that included actress Reese Witherspoon, dancer Misty Copeland and designer Victoria Beckham, also said that, in case anyone was wondering, “I’m very happy to be living on the other side.” She said that before she had come out as a woman, she stayed home most of the time. “Now,” she said to cheers, “I actually like going out, and being myself.” Jenner described her journey to becoming a woman, and spoke of how she sat down with her children to discuss her plans to go public. She said she had realized that perhaps “this is why God put me on this earth, to tell my story ... and make a difference in the world.” Jenner is not the first transgender woman to be a Glamour Woman of the Year; last year, actress Laverne Cox was honored. Still, Jenner’s inclusion sparked some backlash on social media. “We prefer to
focus on the positive,” Jenner said through a spokesman ahead of the announcement. Cindi Leive, Glamour’s editorin-chief, told The Associated Press that criticism of Jenner’s inclusion “certainly gives you an appreciation for the hostility to the trans community that still exists out there.” The annual ceremony at Carnegie Hall in Manhattan mixes high-wattage celebrities with lesser known names, and this year, the award winners include five women touched by the South Carolina church massacre — Alana Simmons, Nadine Collier, Bethane Middleton-Brown, Felicia Sanders and Polly Sheppard — and lauded in the aftermath as “The Peacemakers of Charleston.” Also among those honored: Entrepreneur Elizabeth Holmes, Planned Parenthoood’s Cecile Richards and the victorious U.S. women’s

soccer team. Copeland, who became the first female African-American principal at American Ballet Theatre in June, took the opportunity to serve as a role model in accepting her award. Witherspoon co-founded a production company, Pacific Standard, which aims to make films featuring strong female lead roles as way to fight the gender gap in Hollywood. The company’s “Wild” and “Gone Girl” earned Oscar nominations for Witherspoon, Laura Dern and Rosamund Pike. Witherspoon described her quest to give more actresses leading roles in films — “not the wife or the girlfriend, but the lead,” she said. Among the achievements of some of this year’s other honorees: Beckham gained fame as a Spice Girl, but has since become a highly respected fashion designer. The U.S. women’s soccer team handily defeated Japan to win the 2015 World Cup in July, and was recently welcomed at the White House by President Barack Obama. (ap)

Amy Schumer apologizes to fans who say show was too short PORTLAND, Maine — Amy Schumer is apologizing to fans who feel shortchanged by the brevity of a standup comedy show she did in Maine. The comedian says she did a 47-minute set that was rushed Saturday evening because of the need to accommodate a second show at the Cross Insurance Arena in Portland. But some audience-goers say the set actually ran only 35 to 40 minutes and they were upset to learn the
second show ran an hour. Schumer has a popular sketch series on Comedy Central and starred in the movie “Trainwreck.” She tells WCSH-TV the brief standup show was a “rookie mistake.” Richard Machlin tells the Portland Press Herald he wouldn’t have paid $80 for a 35-minute show. He asked for a refund on Monday. Arena management has promised to get back to him. (ap)

BALINESE people are shocked again by a murder case occurred on Jalan Waturenggong Gang XX, Denpasar recently. What makes the public concerned is that the victim and the suspect are remaining to have the status as vocational students, and they were even of the same private junior high school in Denpasar. Wayan Agus Suryadi, 17, died after being stabbed for several times by YLM, 15. It happened because the victim often mocked the suspect, so that the suspect got angry. Violent behavior of such teenager has made a lot of parties concerned. Moreover, they are the future generation of this nation. What is wrong with them? “Many things have caused the case to happen. Clearly there are two factors, namely the external and internal,” said a teen observer, Oka Negara In terms of internal factor, continued Oka, people of their age are still unstable, looking for identity and like to take action without thinking of the risks first. This internal factor is largely determined and shaped by external factors, like media consumed, pressure by peers and non-supportive parenting like being far from the warmth of their parents and families. “Another factor is the absence of good role models to be emulated,” he said. According to him, it can be seen at the end if teenagers unselectively use media as their reference, like television, soap operas, movies and internet sources in the form of unhealthy dating and violence. Those things are easily used as models or examples. “I would rather say that current teens are more difficult than if they are said to be more naughty or stubborn,” said Oka. ‘Tribunal’ opens hearings into mass killings in Indonesia THE HAGUE, Netherlands — A “people’s tribunal” has opened hearings intended to publicize allegations that Indonesian authorities killed hundreds of thousands of suspected Communists 50 years ago.
The tribunal got underway Tuesday with the reading of a nine-count indictment against the state of Indonesia including charges of murder, torture and sexual violence. The court has no formal legal powers, but aims to shed light on what organizers call the darkest days in Indonesia’s post-colonial history, and promote reconciliation by exposing the truth about the
1965 killings. No representatives of the Indonesian government were present at the hearing in a historic church in The Hague. Prosecutor Todung Mulya Lubis, a prominent human rights lawyer, says “the truth has to be told” about an issue that remains taboo in Indonesia. (ap)
