Nicki Minaj, Ariana Grande winners at MTV EMAs
WEATHER FORECAST 23 - 32 Dps
GLASGOW — Nicki Minaj rapped about shortbread and Ariana Grande capped a breakthrough year with two trophies as the MTV Europe Music Awards celebrated its 20th anniversary Sunday with a Scottish-accented show in Glasgow. Grande was named best female artist and also took the best-single prize for “Problem,” one of a string of hits she’s had this year.

The 21-year-old American singer said she was doubly grateful to the EMAs — meeting Iggy Azalea at last year’s awards show led directly to working with the Australian rapper on “Problem.” “This is absolutely crazy,” Grande said after her second win of the night. LOS ANGELES — The Material Girl has still got it. Julien’s Auctions said Saturday that bidders worldwide sought items from Madonna’s professional and personal life during the two-day Icons & Idols: Rock n’ Roll auction in Beverly Hills that started Friday. The auction house says the gown and stole from her “Material Girl” video sold for $73,125, while the wedding dress the pop icon wore when she married Sean Penn in 1985 brought in $81,250. Her jacket from “Desperately Seeking Susan” sold for a record $252,000 and one earring worn in the film fetched $34,375. Other highlights include the gown from the film “Evita” — which sold for $15,000 — and her “A League of Their Own” baseball uniform — which sold for $31,250.
was too excited to sleep the night before the c e r e m o ny, and said was shaking after walking past a gaggle of photographers on the red carpet. Minaj proved a confident if conventional host for
the show at Glasgow’s SSE Hydro arena, and she also took home the prize for best hip-hop artist. “I’ve been learning so much about your beautiful country and culture ... I’ve pretty much become Scottish,” Minaj said. She illustrated it by rapping about whiskey and shortbread and singing a snippet of The Proclaimers’ anthem “500 Miles.” Minaj’s more provocative side was kept under tight control. There were writhing dancers during a performance of her bum-centric hit “Anaconda,” a putt into derriere-shaped mini-golf hole in tribute to Scotland’s love of golf, and a couple of F-bomb obscenities directed at — of all things — an animatronic dinosaur. But on the whole the event stuck to a standard awards-show script. Beyonce did not appear as widely rumored, and Scottish DJ Calvin Harris had to pull out due to illness. But thousands of young Scottish music fans in the arena — and a global TV audience — saw a high-energy show featuring performances from acts including Ed Sheeran, Alicia Keys, Enrique Iglesias and U2, who brought their own string section. Rising talent was represented by the likes of crunchy British rock duo Royal Blood and singer Charli XCX, while former “Baywatch” star David Hasselhoff got a rousing cheer when he took the stage in a kilt. Winners of the awards are selected by fans across the continent. The EMAs are held in a different European city each year. Ubiquitous boy band One Di-
rection won three awards, including best pop act. Katy Perry and Australian punkpoppers 5 Seconds of Summer each won two, and wayward heartthrob Justin Bieber was named best male artist. None of those acts was on hand to accept their prizes in person. Linkin Park won the rock category, and Chinese singer Bibi Zhou was proclaimed best worldwide act. The awards, founded in 1994, adopted a time-travel theme for their 20th anniversary. Giant balloons of the planets floated in the arena, and Grande performed her song “Break Free” from a flying pod while wearing a white mini-dress reminiscent of the animated TV show “The Jetsons.”

Infrastructure becomes first constraint Bali Post
GIANYAR - Many challenges and obstacles are faced by tourism sector of Indonesia today. One of them is infrastructure issue. These cannot be resolved alone. Tourism relies on transportation. In other words, it is called travel and transportation. Transportation determines tourism because people travel around using transportation. “Based on the travel and tourism index, we are ranked 70th. Our main weakness lies in the tourism infrastructure where we are dependent on transportation,” said the
Minister of Tourism, Arief Yahya, during his visit to the Puri Lukisan Museum, Ubud. On the occasion, he also revealed that the number of travelers visiting Indonesia in general was much less compared to the visit to the neighboring countries such as Malaysia and Thailand. Indonesia was only visited by about 8 million, while Malaysia was visited by 26 million,
Singapore (15 million) and Thailand (28 million). He disclosed the bordercrossing foreign travelers in Malaysia reached 60-80 percent. “As a far more interesting country, we should also enjoy this border-crossing visit. Moreover, Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore are within the same region as Indonesia,” he said. To resolve the issue, one of the proposed measures to the government of Joko Widodo and Jusuf Kalla was the implementation of the free visa for travelers from five countries. Such an initiative coincidentally changed the rules of visa on arrival (VoA) that had prevailed all
this time. “Now, we are still implementing the VOA. So, to increase the tourist visit, I propose the provision of free visa policy next year for travelers from five countries, such as China, Japan, Korea, Russia and Australia,” he said. Specifically the facility for Chinese travelers, he added, was inseparable from the status of the country as one of the countries with the largest population in the world. More importantly, China had a very high economic growth. “Our largest projection is China because this country has high economic growth,” he said. It was said the visa-free facility
would become a convenience for foreign travelers to Indonesia. He stated that such a policy would take effect in January 2015. “We target the number of foreign tourist arrivals in 2015 to reach 10 million people,” he revealed. Arief Yahya said that it was a national program so that the ministries having been appointed by the president should be willing to implement and support it. “There is a cooperation program. This is a national program, the program owned by the president. If the president has set it forth, all parties need to support,” he concluded. (nik)
