One Direction teases for new album with single Agence France-Presse

NEW YORK - Boy band One Direction, whose last album was 2013’s top seller, Monday announced a November release for their latest record and streamed a free single to whet fans’ appetites.

The British heartthrobs’ fourth album -entitled, simply, “Four” -- will go on sale on November 17. In a message to fans on their website, One Direction offered free downloads for one day of the first track, entitled “Fireproof.”

“Fireproof” stays largely true to One Direction’s style, with light guitar-based pop backing up multiple singers, avoiding the heavier sound with which the band flirted on their last album, “Midnight Memories.”

TORONTO - Reese Witherspoon, who won an Oscar in 2006, is generating critical buzz again, appearing at the Toronto film festival Monday in two based-on-true-life films.

“You never set out to make a film that’s going to get awards,” Witherspoon commented about the talk surrounding her performances in “The Good Lie,” about an American woman who takes in Sudanese refugees, and “Wild,” based on author Cheryl Strayed’s best-selling memoir.

“I don’t even think about it,” she said.

“If a movie can help one other person get through a tough time, that’s the gift.”

Her co-star in “Wild,” Laura Dern, however, welcomed the critics’ praise, saying “movies that have this level of truth and importance for all of us should be... seen by the world -- and the more support, that’s great news.”

“Chick flick my ass!” said “Wild” director Jean-Marc Vallee, slamming reviews that mistakenly classified the movie.

The 38-year-old Witherspoon has been one of Hollywood’s highest-paid and most bankable box office draws since her breakout starring turn in the 2001 comedy “Legally Blonde.”

But she failed to gain credibility as a serious actress until her 2006 Oscar win for her role as singer June Carter Cash -- the wife of superstar Johnny Cash -- in James Mangold’s biopic “Walk the Line.”

“Wild” is beautifully shot by Vallee, whose previous feature “Dallas Buyers

Club” began its journey to Oscar success in Toronto last year.

Devastated by the death of her mother in 1991, Strayed self-destructs -- destroying her marriage, becoming hooked on heroin and even becoming pregnant by a stranger.

In a bid to find her way out of despair, she embarks on a 1,100-mile (1,770 kilometer) hike along the US Pacific

Crest Trail.

Witherspoon sought out the acclaimed author to bring “Wild” to the silver screen, saying she felt a powerful connection to the protagonist.

“It’s an important book in my life, it’s about a beautiful journey to save yourself.”

The film -- with a screenplay by Nick Hornby (“High Fidelity,” “About a Boy” and “An Education”) -- shows Witherspoon in explicit sex scenes, injecting heroin and badly bruised from lugging a 75-pound “monster” backpack through the awesome California and Oregon wilderness.

TABANAN - Apparently, the land along the Yeh Gangga Beach has been targeted by investors. Even, the corruption suspects also glanced at Yeh Gangga to re-invest their money.

For instance, Djoko Susilo and the recent suspect Jro Wacik are known to have purchased a piece of land spreading across 2.1 hectares in the coastal area.

The Head of Tabanan Culture and Tourism Agency, Wayan Adnyana, said that the land along the coast had been already owned by investors since long time ago.

“Yeh Gangga is considered to have

potential for the future. On that account, since long time ago the land in coastal area has been purchased by investors,” said Adnyana.

Although having been purchased by investors, the construction of ac-

commodation on Yeh Gangga was still not commonplace. Currently, the tourist accommodation on Yeh Gangga Beach consisted of two budget hotels, two cottages and two restaurants. In addition, there was horse riding attraction to be enjoyed.

Availability of tourist accommodation on Yeh Gangga Beach remained some few, even though many coastal borderlines had been owned by investors. “The development of tourist accommodation is now dependent on the investors.

Probably, some may have been

developed but not been recorded yet,” said Adnyana.

Though it had been owned by investors, according to Adnyana, Tabanan government would provide protection for local residents. Accommodation could only be built on unproductive farming land so that the land of residents could be well maintained and not converted. “Other than for meeting the food needs, the paddy fields can also be developed into agrotourism. Thus, the accommodation can only be built on unproductive land,” said Adnyana.

Tabanan government also set Yeh Gangga as a tourist destination based on the Regent Regulation No.470/1998. “In order to develop the Yeh Gangga, Tabanan government has developed Sudimara village where Yeh Gangga belongs to one of its hamlets,” said Adnyana.

Sudimara village included one of the tourism villages obtaining grants from the National Program for Tourism Self-Empowerment (PNPMP) since 2011 to develop the tourism potential at the Sudimara village. (kmb24)

Freelance guide hunted by Municipal Police

DENPASAR - A number of freelance tourist guides are often at issue in the circle of tourism businesspeople. On the one hand, they are hunted by the authorities, but on the other hand it is difficult to get license. Even, the tour guides handling guests often play hide-and-seek with the authorities because the driver does not have a permit. Interestingly, the unlicensed also has its own association because the license was complicated by the government. At the end, they are raided by municipal police at tourist attraction.

On Tuesday (Sep 9), at least three freelance tourist guides were trialed in the Denpasar District Court. They

were Panca Hermawan, 32, Yusiman, 27, and Kadek Erna Johan, 31.

All the three were declared to have

violated because as a tourist guide escorting guests to tourist attraction or objects they should equipped

Sidewalk utilized to display goods Bali Post

GIANYAR - Sidewalk that should be earmarked for pedestrians seems not valid for the road section in the tourist area of Ubud- Tegallalang, Gianyar. The area better known as the world’s longest row of art shops indeed has become a tourist destination.

However, the condition of the arrangement in the area seems to have been neglected by the existence of the merchandise displayed along the sidewalk.

Aside from the merchandise belonging to the art shops, some-

times the trucks such as container truck also take advantage of the sidewalk to load and unload their freights. As field observation on Tuesday (Sep 9), the unloading truck disrupted the sidewalk.

Upper layer of the sidewalk chipped. This condition could be seen around the area of Petulu, Ubud.

Interestingly, despite breaking the laws, the arrival of the container truck to unload its freight was also guarded by police. In this regard, the officers only managed the traffic to prevent traffic jams. (dar)

dants were arrested separately by the municipal police of Bali Province at Taman Ayun and Tirta Empul tourist attraction. They were charged to have violated the Article 4 paragraph (1) in conjunction with the Article 14 of the Regional Bylaw No.5/2008 on tourist guides.

After the reading of the indictment, the defendants without being accompanied by lawyers underwent it by themselves. They stated to have understood about the indictment and did not object. The trial was resumed with substantiation, namely presenting witnesses from the municipal police of Bali Province who made the arrest, and one of the civil servant investigators. Basically the freelance tourist guides recognized their faults and regretted the act. Based on the testimony, the prosecutor then sued the defendant with a fine of IDR 2 million and subsidiary penalty of two months for each defendant.

Responding to the demands, the three defendants pleaded for leniency, so that the judges after deliberation decided if the three defendants were proved guilty in appropriate with the charges in the Article 4 paragraph (1) in conjunction with the Article 14 of the Regional Bylaw No.5/2008 on tourist guide and fined them at IDR 1 million and subsidiary penalty of 20 days confinement. Pedophilia offender sued for five years

NEGARA - Individual officer of the West Bali National Park (TNBB) becoming a defendant in the pedophile case, I Made Sumanayasa aka Boceng, 51, was charged five years in prison. Public Prosecutor in the trial at the Negara District Court sued Boceng to have committed abuse against a minor, Tuesday (Sep 9). The prosecutor also included a fine worth IDR 80 million and subsidiary sentence of 5 months in prison.

Earlier, in the indictment Boceng

was charged to have violated Article 82 of Law No. 23/2002 about child abuse, with a penalty of 3 to 15 years in prison and a fine of IDR 60 million to IDR 300 million. The closed trial only lasted for 5 minutes with the reading of the charges by the public prosecutor Chalida K Hapsari and Ni Ketut Lilik Suryanti.

Boceng through his legal counsel, I Nyoman Karinata, responded to the demands and would deliver a defense in the upcoming trial. After the trial, Karinata told reporters that the demand of the prosecutor to the defendant was still too heavy.

According to him, one of the considerations was that the victim had forgiven Boceng.

As reported earlier, Boceng was arrested by arrested after committing sexual abuse against a number of boys at the official residence of the West Bali National Park at Gilimanuk. The victims were boys with a number of rewards and clothes.

The culprit also wrote down some names of the victims in the diary book. (kmb26)

Harris Seminyak warming party IBP

SEMINYAK - The latest addition to Harris collection of hotels opened her doors to the public this past Friday, August 8th with a stimulating mix of Brazilian and 50’s influences.

Guests were greeted by retro secretaries, signature orange carpets and the in-house band at the Café before being taken on a guided tour of the facilities which featured some fun surprises along the way.

The tour showcased the HARRIS Café, Art Lounge, rooftop DJ Lounge, Flying Pool, H’ Spa and Fitness facilities before arriving at the Harrissimo Pizza restaurant for a poolside stage show which introduced upper management Harris Hotel Seminyak GM Sebastien Menesguen, PT Graha Gemilang Director, Harmanto Darmali and Tauzia Group founder Marc Steinmeyer for a ribbon-dance and cutting ceremony. The focus then moved to the Photo Hunt black and white photography competition presentation which saluted the best photographers and their winning works.

Aside from the toured facilities, Harris Hotel Seminyak also has a beach facility, ten minutes away by free buggy shuttle on Seminyak Beach, along with three on-site swimming pools, one kids pool (total five pools include Flying Pool), Internet Corner, Dino Kids Club on Lobby level, and five meeting rooms with capacity for up to 85 person.

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Apple charts new course with large iPhones, smartwatch

SAN FRANCISCO - Apple moved to recapture its role as a tech trend-setter on Tuesday with its highly anticipated first smartwatch and two large-screen versions of the iPhone.

With the debuts of Apple Watch and iPhone 6 models stretched to fit a hot “phablet” trend, the California company delivered what rumors had predicted leading up to the event.

The Apple Watch, a sleek wrist device that links to the iPhone, “will redefine what people expect from this category,” chief executive Tim Cook said at a carefully staged presentation in Apple’s hometown Cupertino, California.

Market tracker IHS saw Apple as aiming to reset the wearable computing market the way it transformed the world of smartphones with the release of the iPhone.

“But moving into a new category is a bold, expensive and risky effort,” IHS said in an initial analysis of the Apple announcements.

Despite an array of smartwatch releases, no one seems to have found the key to the market, according to analyst Roger Kay of Endpoint Technologies.

Syncing Apple Watch capabilities to iPhones also means that the overall cost of strapping one on could near $1,000, Kay noted.

“I’m not getting the impression that Apple has nailed the category,” Kay told AFP. The latest Apple announcement failed to move Wall Street, with stock in the computer titan closing down by 0.4 percent and slipping a touch further in after-market trades.

The iPhone 6 models boost screen sizes in what some see as the company catching up to a “phablet” trend combining features of

smartphones and tablets.

“Bigger screen. Better performance. Elegant design. Welcome to the party #iPhone 6,” Taiwanbased smartphone rival HTC said

in a message fired Apple’s way on Twitter.

Apple’s main rival Samsung has long had a range of larger handsets and has tried to market a smart-

watch of its own.

LG recently released a largescreen flagship G3 model with cameras tricked out to delight selfieloving smartphone users.

The iPhone 6 will have a screen of 4.7 inches and the 6-Plus will be 5.5 inches, allowing Apple to adapt to consumers’ apparent preference for bigger displays.

DETROIT — Honda shared its vision of the hands-free highway commute Tuesday, a car that can safely drive itself on the freeway while the driver’s hands are off the wheel.

While the car is just a prototype, Honda says the technology could start appearing on Honda cars in 2020 and beyond.

The prototype — an Acura RLX sedan — has cameras that monitor lane marking and multiple radar sensors on the front and sides. On top is a beacon that uses laser beams to continually scan the car’s surroundings, similar to self-driving prototypes already introduced by

Google, Ford and Toyota. GPS also helps the car stay on a previously mapped course and follow the speed limit.

On a loop around Detroit, the car’s driver took his hands off the wheel as the car entered the freeway. It accelerated to the speed limit and applied the brakes if it got too close to a car in front. It signaled to change lanes and waited for an opening. The car merged easily onto two other freeways and edged to the left to avoid a construction zone. To exit, the car reduced its speed to 35 miles per hour on the ramp.

The driver’s hands remained off the wheel for the entire eightmile loop. But Honda says the car

will automatically return control to the driver if it senses it can’t handle a situation. One example: If a car cuts in front of the Honda too closely and fast braking is needed.

Honda has been working on this prototype car in Japan for about a year, but it’s the result of decades of safety research, said Hironobu Kiryu, the car’s chief engineer.

“Honda is aiming to eliminate accidents, not just for the driver but for pedestrians and drivers of other cars,” he said.

The company is showing the car in Detroit this week as part of the Intelligent Transport Systems World Congress, an annual gathering of engineers and other researchers.

Mustika explained that coconut shell carving was best favored by Europe travelers. Even, they were willing to spend millions of rupiahs for a coconut shell carving. Meanwhile, the other kinds of carvings were usually sold for IDR 40,000 to IDR 1 million. “Dominant buyers are from Europe, but there is also a small number of from Asia,”

he said.

Other than for carving craft, the coconut shell was also made into souvenirs with a variety of designs, ranging from women’s accessories such as tongs, picture frames and household utensils such as spoons and bowls. In addition, the coconut shells could also be used to make drinking glass, lamp cover, spoon, fork or vegetable spoon. With a touch of very fine art, the coconut shell craft could look very artistic. DENPASAR - The exports of plastic crafts created by Balinese artisans reached US$13,132 million during the period between January and July this year.

The exports have increased by 43.21 percent as compared to US$9,170 million recorded during the same period last year, Panasunan Siregar, the head of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of Bali, stated on Tuesday.

He affirmed that the realization of foreign trade for plastic craft items has increased by 40.18 per-

cent from 11,985 million units in the first seven months of 2013 to 16,802 million units in the same period in 2014.

The plastic craft industry is among the six types of cottage industries, which have successfully managed to penetrate the foreign markets by contributing 4.36 percent to Bali’s total export value of US$300, 957 million.

Siregar noted that of all the plastic souvenirs exported, 11.80 percent were sold in the Italian market, following the United States at 3.89 percent, Spain 2.99 percent, Singapore 2.83 percent, French 2.82,

Japan 1.97 percent, Germany 1.69 percent, and UK 0.98 percent.

Meanwhile, the remaining 67.79 percent of the total exported plastic souvenirs were sent to various other countries around the world.

Balinese artists showcase their creativity by making various kinds of souvenirs from plastic raw materials, and therefore, their products are fairly competitive in the international markets and are in demand in foreign countries.

The souvenirs feature various types of ornamental designs that are ideal for living rooms, bedrooms, and hotels.

Detainee of Denpasar Police keeps crystal meth in his cell Bali Post

DENPASAR - One of the Denpasar Police detainees in drug case with the initials BA, 38, was caught keeping a crystal meth and bong when an inspection was made on Saturday night (Sep 6). Related to the case, BA was then processed again.

For information, the suspect BA was arrested on Thursday (Jul 17) around 5:00 p.m. on Jalan Legian Gang Anggrek, Kuta. At that time, police confiscated 10 packages of crystal meth weighing 2.45 grams and 2 pieces of ecstasy. In addition, police could also arrest his syndicate consisting of AW and NB. It was revealed by the former legislator of Karangasem House, I Gede Tamu Sugiantara, and one of the local temple supporting devotees Nyoman Musna last Thursday at Ban. Gede Tamu said that his party also carried out a mendem pedagingan ritual at the Mangun Kerti Temple of local subak. Last Tuesday, he was busy doing devotional works and so was Musna.

Musna said that during dry season the discharge of springs becoming the mainstay of the resident on the hills in the area of Manik Aji village, Ban village, namely the Toya Panon spring, had diminished.

Even though the water was still available at the public cisterns, the water from the spring should be taken by residents as alternative. The water at public cistern could not be drain through pipeline to people’s homes. It happened as the water in the cistern was very limited so that it did not have strong enough pressure to be flowed to people’s houses. “People who need clean water should take to the public cistern,” said Musna.

All this time, a total of 15 public cisterns had been established. The water was flowed from the Toya Panon spring.

The 15 cisterns were assisted by the readers of Bali Post daily newspaper.

Related to the regular ngusaba kayehan, the chief of local customary village, Nyoman Terus, said that the ritual was habitually organized on the full

moon of September. Procession of the ritual was once presented in the cultural paraded held in the town of Amlapura recently. It was intended to conserve and foster people’s love to local wisdom for the welfare of society in terms of spiritual and physical aspect.

The tradition of ngusaba kayehan (bathing place) or ngusaba negen (bearer) was alleged to have existed at local village from ancient time where the ancestors performed a meditation to local deities at the area of Manik Aji hamlet, Ban village. It was intended to invoke boon in the form of spring denoting the source of livelihood for the residents of Ban village where the village was barren and people were difficult to get clean water. Upon the request of residents who were crying and shedding tears (Balinese, Toya Panon), the deities then bestowed a spring which never dried out even though the spring often declined during long dry season.

As an expression of gratitude, the residents of Ban village regularly held the ngusaba kayehan or ngusaba tegen ritual on the full moon in September.

As the means used in the ritual, each native villager presented crops such as maize, cassava or sweet potatoes and fried cake carried to Puseh Temple. The crops were then collected in the long pavilion. (013)

But some inside the ruling coalition have questioned whether, with Tusk in Brussels, his successor can hold rival factions within the ruling party in check, and avoid defeat in a parliamentary election late next year.

Tusk set the handover of power in motion when he handed a resignation letter to President Bronislaw Komorowski at a scheduled meeting of the National Security Bureau.

“Yes, I handed over the papers,” Tusk told reporters as he climbed into his car after the meeting.

Komorowski is expected to formally accept Tusk’s resignation on Thursday and to invite Kopacz, a paediatrician who served a previous stint as health minister, to meet him for talks on forming a new government.

Under Poland’s constitution, the president then has two weeks to nominate a prime minister. The prime minister-designate has a further two weeks after that to win approval from parliament, where

the ruling coalition has a small but reliable majority.

But she said there was “a lack of clarity on the fulfillment” of many other points of the peace plan. In view of that, “we support these sanctions being published now,” she said. She said the sanctions are not permanent.

“If the 12 points are really fulfilled substantially, we will be the first to lift the new sanctions,” Merkel added. “They are not an end in themselves — they are only ever imposed if they are unavoidable.”

WASHINGTON — The Great Recession officially ended more than five years ago. Yet the feeling of many people around the world can be summarized in one word: Gloom.

In a survey of 48,643 people in 44 countries out Tuesday, the Pew Research Center found that 60 percent say their own country’s economy is performing poorly.

Dissatisfaction runs highest in the world’s most advanced economies, where 64 percent say conditions are bad. In the United States, 58 percent give the American economy poor marks.

The deepest despair was recorded in countries hit hardest by the European debt crisis: 97 percent of Greeks, 96 percent of Italians and 93 percent of Spaniards said their economies were performing poorly.

Unemployment rates are extraordinarily high in all three: 27 percent in Greece, 13 percent in Italy, 25 percent in Spain.

There are exceptions to the pervasive gloom: 89 percent of Chinese are positive about their country’s economy, even though it’s slowed markedly from the double-digit growth of a few years ago. In Vietnam, 87 percent of respondents gave the economy high marks. In Germany, 85 percent did.

In the countries that Pew characterizes as “emerging economies,” 59 percent said conditions were unsatisfactory. Only in low-income “developing economies” did a majority (51 percent) call economic conditions “good.”

Brazil has seen the steepest drop in economic confidence: Just 32 percent of Brazilians were positive about their economy, down from 59 percent in 2013.

Perceptions are improving in the United Kingdom: Last year, just 15 percent said the U.K. economy was in good shape. This year, the figure had jumped to 43 percent.

Eighty percent of Chinese said their economy would be stronger in a year, making them the world’s most optimistic people. Just 15 percent of Japanese expected an improved economy next year, the lowest among the countries surveyed.

People in advanced economies ranked high levels of government debt as their biggest economic problem, followed by rising prices, a lack of jobs and the income gap between the rich and poor.

People in middle-income countries saw rising prices as their biggest problem.

Those in low-income countries regarded a weak job market as their No. 1 problem.

The BICF also demonstrated the importance of cacao with chocolate campaign by involving 200 delegates of the BICF and 800 students from 10 high schools in Jembrana through the movement of drinking chocolate. Besides, it was also distributed 5,000 chocolates produced by several companies. “We hope this agreement will encourage the

cacao farmers in producing quality cacao beans and stop the logging that replaces it with other crops,” she explained.

Meanwhile, the Regent of Jembrana, I Putu Artha, stated that BICF showed that the international community had given high appreciation to the hard work of cacao farmers in Jembrana. “Starting today, let’s preserve the cacao crops in the beloved Buffalo Race Land,” he explained.

In fact, the BICF was also beneficial for the entrepreneurs. With the direct contact of the companies with farmers, they could interact. “So far, our company has been producing chocolate with brand of Tabanan chocolate. NEW YORK - Sales at McDonald’s restaurants dropped in August, hurt by a food-safety scandal in China and heavy competition in the US, the company said Tuesday.

The US fast-food giant said global comparable sales fell 3.7 percent in August, bigger than the 2.5 percent decline in July.

“During August, McDonald’s global business faced several headwinds that impacted sales performance,” said chief executive Don Thompson.

Sales sank 14.5 percent in the Asia/ Pacific, Middle East and Africa region,

which accounts for about one-fourth of McDonald’s revenues.

McDonald’s did not release revenue figures for August. In the second quarter, the fast-food company reported global revenues of $7.2 billion.

In July, Chinese officials shut foodsupplier Shanghai Husi Food Co. following a television report alleging the plant mixed out-of-date meat with fresh product that was then supplied to McDonald’s.

The restaurant chain also curtailed Japanese sales of products made with chicken from China in the wake of the debacle.

McDonald’s said it expects the China food safety problems will result in a drop

in earnings of 15-20 cents per share in the third quarter compared to last year, when it notched $1.52 per share.

US comparable sales fell 2.8 percent in August due largely to “sluggish industry growth in a highly competitive marketplace,” the company said.

European comparable sales declined 0.7 percent, with a strong performance in Britain offset by weakness in Russia.

In 2013, US sales accounted for about 30 percent of McDonald’s global revenues, while European sales represented about 40 percent.

The autonomous region in the southern island of Mindanao, to be called Bangsamoro, would get its own 60-member parliament that would wield exclusive power over such areas as agriculture, trade, tourism and education.

Under the proposal, Islamic Shariah law would apply to Muslims in the region, but the country’s justice system would continue to apply to non-Muslims.

The autonomous zone, which generally covers five provinces, would replace an existing one, seen as a dismal failure. The new plan grants much more autonomy to the region, and Aquino’s government also has promised to pour 17 billion pesos ($389 million) in special development funds over the next five years into the region, which has been stunted economically due to the conflict.

The central government would retain authority over areas such as defense, foreign and monetary policy, postal service and immigration, according to the proposal.

The rebels have been fighting since the 1970s for Muslim self-

rule in Mindanao in an insurrection that has killed about 150,000 combatants and civilians. The United States and other Western governments have backed the autonomy deal partly to prevent the insurgency from breeding extremists who could threaten their countries.

The peace accord and the draft law came after 13 years of tough negotiations. “This is the farthest distance we have reached in our peace journey with the MILF,” presidential adviser Teresita Deles said in a statement. “Every word, line, and provision shall be subjected to the sunshine of democratic debate, where all voices will be heard, with our constitution as the guiding light.”

The United Nations office in the Philippines praised the development as a “critical milestone” and “a crucial achievement in ensuring lasting peace and sustainable development in Mindanao and in the wider Philippines.”

The new region will also get larger revenue shares, including 75 percent of national taxes, fees and charges collected by the government in the Bangsamoro.

The current Muslim region gets 70 percent of those taxes.

Japanese nuclear plant clears safety hurdle Associated Press

TOKYO — A nuclear power plant in southern Japan won regulators’ approval Wednesday under new safety standards imposed after the 2011 Fukushima disaster, a key step toward becoming the first to restart under the tighter rules.

The Nuclear Regulation Authority unanimously approved an inspection report for the Sendai Nuclear Power Station’s two reactors. It concluded that the reactors complied with new regulations designed to avoid major damage during disasters such as the massive earthquake and tsunami that caused meltdowns at the Fukushima Daiichi plant.

The plant’s safety approval and its expected restart are a big boost for Japan’s nuclear industry. All of the

country’s 48 remaining reactors have been offline since the 2011 disaster for safety checks and repairs, except for two that briefly operated under the previous safety standards.

The approval of the inspection report followed a 30-day review in which regulators read about 17,000 questions and comments from the public and experts, reflecting the huge public interest in the reactors’ safety and possible restart.

The authority, however, has no say over a restart of the plant, and it will probably be several months before Sendai’s reactors are back online. The plant, which is operated

by Kyushu Electric Power Co., still faces an on-site operational inspection and must obtain the consent of local authorities.

Kyushu Electric has upgraded the plant’s seismic resistance and

is tripling the height of its tsunami seawall to 15 meters (50 feet). It also has evaluated newly added risks including terrorist attacks, airplane strikes and volcanic explosions.

Volkswagon can seal WRC crown in Australia SYDNEY — Volkswagon teammates Sebastian Ogier and JariMatti Latvala will be released from team orders and allowed to pursue their personal battle for the world drivers’ championships at the Rally of Australia starting Friday in New South Wales state.

Ogier and Latvala jointly need only five points from the rally, the 10th of 14 rounds of the World Rally Championships, to clinch the manufacturers’ championships for Volkswagon. If the German team achieves that goal, it will be the earliest point of the season that a WRC title has been decided in 25 years.

Volkswagon is already assured of the drivers’ crown as, with four rounds remaining, Latvala and teammate Andreas Mikkelsen are the only drivers in a position to catch Ogier who leads the title race with 187 points.

Volkswagon’s motorsport director Jost Capito said there would be no pressure on Ogier and Latvala to drive to team instructions.

“Rally Australia is one of the

highlights of the year,” Capito said. “With the current situation in the world championship it has the potential to be particularly exciting in 2014.

“In the Ogier versus Latvala duel, both drivers have been given the go-ahead to fight for victory.

We also have a good chance of being able to celebrate winning the manufacturers’ title early.

The 44 point gap that currently separates Ogier and Latvala in the drivers’ standings is the same that existed before Rallye Deutschland, the previous WRC round in which both crashed and failed to finish.

Until that point the Volkswagon pair had won every round of the season with Ogier claiming five victories and Latvala three.

Williams said she took her big sister’s advice which was to have fun and “enjoy the moment.” Williams was most proud of her final runway model, who was plus-size.

Schumacher moves home to continue recovery

Michael Schumacher has returned home to continue his rehabilitation process after suffering head injuries in a skiing accident last December.

Schumacher was treated in a hospital in Grenoble in the months following the accident, prior to being moved in June.

Most recently, he was treated at the University Hospital of Lausanne in Switzerland, prior to returning to his home near Lake Geneva. No further details have been issued regarding his condition, although a statement issued by his management did say that he has been making progress.

“Henceforth, Michael’s rehabilitation will take place at his home,” said the statement. “Considering the severe injuries he suffered, progress has been made in the past weeks and months.

“There is still, however, a long and difficult road ahead. “We would like extend our gratitude to the entire team at CHUV Lausanne for their thorough and competent work.

“We ask that the privacy of Michael’s family continue to be respected, and that speculations about his state of health are avoided.”

The previous statement concerning his condition, released in June, confirmed that Schumacher was no longer in a coma.

MANCHESTER, England - Queens Park Rangers could be consigned to English soccer’s minor leagues if they are relegated from the top flight and fail to pay a potentially huge fine for breaching the Football League’s financial fair play rules.

Shaun Harvey, chief executive of the Football League (FL), which governs the second to fourth tiers of English soccer, said on Tuesday that it has the right to refuse readmission to their competitions to clubs who do not pay outstanding fines.

Under the FL’s rules, QPR, who returned to the Premier League this season, would be fined about 54 million pounds ($87.02 million) if their losses during their promotion campaign matched their 2012-13 figure of 65.4 million. “Theoretically that is the position,” Harvey said at the Soccerex Global Convention.

“I would hope there would be a resolution long before that option even had to be considered. We are

satisfied we still have the ability under our regulations to charge them for a breach of our rules whilst they were in membership.”

QPR, who were won promotion straight back to the top flight, are set to release their financial results later this year.

Under the FL’s rules, clubs were allowed losses of 8 million pounds in 2013-14, with fines on losses above 18 million imposed on a pound-for-pound basis.

“Most clubs (in the Premier League) will become a Football League club again,” said Harvey.

“QPR will be hoping it does not happen for some considerable number of seasons. But the chances are they will need to return to the Football League fold at some point in the future.

“Certainly, three of the current 20 clubs that are in the Premier League will be in the Football League next season.”

Czech Republic beats Netherlands 2-1 Willian leads Brazil past Ecuador 1-0

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Willian scored in the first half, and Brazil beat Ecuador 1-0 on Tuesday night in a friendly at MetLife Stadium. Willian, one of seven players from Brazil’s World Cup roster who made the trip to the United States, scored off a feed from Neymar in the 31st minute. Brazil also beat Colombia 1-0 on Friday in Miami Gardens, Florida, part of a nice start for Dunga’s second stint as manager of Brazil.

“I didn’t see anything negative,” Dunga said. “I think I saw some good things tonight. I only have positive things to say. “The players played well against two very good teams.

The team raised its ability depending on how difficult the situations were.

All the players on this team I felt made the most of their opportunities in these games.”

The loss before a yellow-clad crowd of 35,975 gave Ecuador a split of its two exhibition games in the United States under interim coach Sixto Vizuete. MANCHESTER, England - Queens Park Rangers could be consigned to English soccer’s minor leagues if they are relegated from the top flight and fail to pay a potentially huge fine for breaching the Football League’s financial fair play rules.

Shaun Harvey, chief executive of the Football League (FL), which governs the second to fourth tiers of English soccer, said on Tuesday that it has the right to refuse readmission to their competitions to clubs who do not pay outstanding fines.

Under the FL’s rules, QPR, who returned to the Premier League this season, would be fined about 54 million pounds ($87.02 million) if their losses during their promotion campaign matched their 2012-13 figure of 65.4 million. “Theoretically that is the position,” Harvey said at the Soccerex Global Convention.

“I would hope there would be a resolution long before that option even had to be considered. We are

satisfied we still have the ability under our regulations to charge them for a breach of our rules whilst they were in membership.”

QPR, who were won promotion straight back to the top flight, are set to release their financial results later this year.

Under the FL’s rules, clubs were allowed losses of 8 million pounds in 2013-14, with fines on losses above 18 million imposed on a pound-for-pound basis.

“Most clubs (in the Premier League) will become a Football League club again,” said Harvey.

“QPR will be hoping it does not happen for some considerable number of seasons. But the chances are they will need to return to the Football League fold at some point in the future.

“Certainly, three of the current 20 clubs that are in the Premier League will be in the Football League next season.”

QPR chairman Tony Fernandes has previously vowed to fight any fine imposed by the Football League.

Volkswagon can seal WRC crown in Australia SYDNEY — Volkswagon teammates Sebastian Ogier and JariMatti Latvala will be released from team orders and allowed to pursue their personal battle for the world drivers’ championships at the Rally of Australia starting Friday in New South Wales state.

Ogier and Latvala jointly need only five points from the rally, the 10th of 14 rounds of the World Rally Championships, to clinch the manufacturers’ championships for Volkswagon. If the German team achieves that goal, it will be the earliest point of the season that a WRC title has been decided in 25 years.

Volkswagon is already assured of the drivers’ crown as, with four rounds remaining, Latvala and teammate Andreas Mikkelsen are the only drivers in a position to catch Ogier who leads the title race with 187 points.

Volkswagon’s motorsport director Jost Capito said there would be no pressure on Ogier and Latvala to drive to team instructions.

“Rally Australia is one of the

highlights of the year,” Capito said. “With the current situation in the world championship it has the potential to be particularly exciting in 2014.

“In the Ogier versus Latvala duel, both drivers have been given the go-ahead to fight for victory.

We also have a good chance of being able to celebrate winning the manufacturers’ title early.

The 44 point gap that currently separates Ogier and Latvala in the drivers’ standings is the same that existed before Rallye Deutschland, the previous WRC round in which both crashed and failed to finish.

Until that point the Volkswagon pair had won every round of the season with Ogier claiming five victories and Latvala three.

“I had a really focused mind; I would literally be on the table getting my back worked on looking at different models,” she said.

Venus has also shown at fashion week.

Williams said she took her big sister’s advice which was to have fun and “enjoy the moment.” Williams was most proud of her final runway model, who was plus-size.

Schumacher moves home to continue recovery

Michael Schumacher has returned home to continue his rehabilitation process after suffering head injuries in a skiing accident last December.

Schumacher was treated in a hospital in Grenoble in the months following the accident, prior to being moved in June.

Most recently, he was treated at the University Hospital of Lausanne in Switzerland, prior to returning to his home near Lake Geneva. No further details have been issued regarding his condition, although a statement issued by his management did say that he has been making progress.

“Henceforth, Michael’s rehabilitation will take place at his home,” said the statement. “Considering the severe injuries he suffered, progress has been made in the past weeks and months.

“There is still, however, a long and difficult road ahead. “We would like extend our gratitude to the entire team at CHUV Lausanne for their thorough and competent work.

“We ask that the privacy of Michael’s family continue to be respected, and that speculations about his state of health are avoided.”

The previous statement concerning his condition, released in June, confirmed that Schumacher was no longer in a coma.

The autonomous region in the southern island of Mindanao, to be called Bangsamoro, would get its own 60-member parliament that would wield exclusive power over such areas as agriculture, trade, tourism and education.

Under the proposal, Islamic Shariah law would apply to Muslims in the region, but the country’s justice system would continue to apply to non-Muslims.

The autonomous zone, which generally covers five provinces, would replace an existing one, seen as a dismal failure. The new plan grants much more autonomy to the region, and Aquino’s government also has promised to pour 17 billion pesos ($389 million) in special development funds over the next five years into the region, which has been stunted economically due to the conflict.

The central government would retain authority over areas such as defense, foreign and monetary policy, postal service and immigration, according to the proposal.

The rebels have been fighting since the 1970s for Muslim self-

rule in Mindanao in an insurrection that has killed about 150,000 combatants and civilians. The United States and other Western governments have backed the autonomy deal partly to prevent the insurgency from breeding extremists who could threaten their countries.

The peace accord and the draft law came after 13 years of tough negotiations. “This is the farthest distance we have reached in our peace journey with the MILF,” presidential adviser Teresita Deles said in a statement. “Every word, line, and provision shall be subjected to the sunshine of democratic debate, where all voices will be heard, with our constitution as the guiding light.”

The United Nations office in the Philippines praised the development as a “critical milestone” and “a crucial achievement in ensuring lasting peace and sustainable development in Mindanao and in the wider Philippines.”

The new region will also get larger revenue shares, including 75 percent of national taxes, fees and charges collected by the government in the Bangsamoro.

The current Muslim region gets 70 percent of those taxes.

Japanese nuclear plant clears safety hurdle Associated Press

TOKYO — A nuclear power plant in southern Japan won regulators’ approval Wednesday under new safety standards imposed after the 2011 Fukushima disaster, a key step toward becoming the first to restart under the tighter rules.

The Nuclear Regulation Authority unanimously approved an inspection report for the Sendai Nuclear Power Station’s two reactors. It concluded that the reactors complied with new regulations designed to avoid major damage during disasters such as the massive earthquake and tsunami that caused meltdowns at the Fukushima Daiichi plant.

The plant’s safety approval and its expected restart are a big boost for Japan’s nuclear industry. All of the

country’s 48 remaining reactors have been offline since the 2011 disaster for safety checks and repairs, except for two that briefly operated under the previous safety standards.

The approval of the inspection report followed a 30-day review in which regulators read about 17,000 questions and comments from the public and experts, reflecting the huge public interest in the reactors’ safety and possible restart.

The authority, however, has no say over a restart of the plant, and it will probably be several months before Sendai’s reactors are back online. The plant, which is operated

by Kyushu Electric Power Co., still faces an on-site operational inspection and must obtain the consent of local authorities.

Kyushu Electric has upgraded the plant’s seismic resistance and

is tripling the height of its tsunami seawall to 15 meters (50 feet). It also has evaluated newly added risks including terrorist attacks, airplane strikes and volcanic explosions.

But opponents say the approval is premature because Kyushu Electric can wait two years to implement some key safety measures, such as filters on vents to reduce radiation leaks, and because nearby communities still lack adequate evacuation plans.

They worry in particular about the region’s volcanic activity since the plant is surrounded by at least five active volcanoes. Nuclear Regulation Authority Commissioner Shunichi Tanaka said a catastrophic eruption is unlikely before the end of the reactors’ functional lifespan in about 30 years.

WASHINGTON — The Great Recession officially ended more than five years ago. Yet the feeling of many people around the world can be summarized in one word: Gloom.

In a survey of 48,643 people in 44 countries out Tuesday, the Pew Research Center found that 60 percent say their own country’s economy is performing poorly.

Dissatisfaction runs highest in the world’s most advanced economies, where 64 percent say conditions are bad. In the United States, 58 percent give the American economy poor marks.

The deepest despair was recorded in countries hit hardest by the European debt crisis: 97 percent of Greeks, 96 percent of Italians and 93 percent of Spaniards said their economies were performing poorly.

Unemployment rates are extraordinarily high in all three: 27 percent in Greece, 13 percent in Italy, 25 percent in Spain.

There are exceptions to the pervasive gloom: 89 percent of Chinese are positive about their country’s economy, even though it’s slowed markedly from the double-digit growth of a few years ago. In Vietnam, 87 percent of respondents gave the economy high marks. In Germany, 85 percent did.

In the countries that Pew characterizes as “emerging economies,” 59 percent said conditions were unsatisfactory. Only in low-income “developing economies” did a majority (51 percent) call economic conditions “good.”

Brazil has seen the steepest drop in economic confidence: Just 32 percent of Brazilians were positive about their economy, down from 59 percent in 2013.

Perceptions are improving in the United Kingdom: Last year, just 15 percent said the U.K. economy was in good shape. This year, the figure had jumped to 43 percent.

Eighty percent of Chinese said their economy would be stronger in a year, making them the world’s most optimistic people. Just 15 percent of Japanese expected an improved economy next year, the lowest among the countries surveyed.

People in advanced economies ranked high levels of government debt as their biggest economic problem, followed by rising prices, a lack of jobs and the income gap between the rich and poor.

NEW YORK - Sales at McDonald’s restaurants dropped in August, hurt by a food-safety scandal in China and heavy competition in the US, the company said Tuesday.

The US fast-food giant said global comparable sales fell 3.7 percent in August, bigger than the 2.5 percent decline in July.

“During August, McDonald’s global business faced several headwinds that impacted sales performance,” said chief executive Don Thompson.

Sales sank 14.5 percent in the Asia/ Pacific, Middle East and Africa region,

which accounts for about one-fourth of McDonald’s revenues.

McDonald’s did not release revenue figures for August. In the second quarter, the fast-food company reported global revenues of $7.2 billion.

In July, Chinese officials shut foodsupplier Shanghai Husi Food Co. following a television report alleging the plant mixed out-of-date meat with fresh product that was then supplied to McDonald’s.

The restaurant chain also curtailed Japanese sales of products made with chicken from China in the wake of the debacle.

It was revealed by the former legislator of Karangasem House, I Gede Tamu Sugiantara, and one of the local temple supporting devotees Nyoman Musna last Thursday at Ban. Musna said that during dry season the discharge of springs becoming the mainstay of the resident on the hills in the area of Manik Aji village, Ban village, namely the Toya Panon spring, had diminished.

Even though the water was still available at the public cisterns, the water from the spring should be taken by residents as alternative. The water at public cistern could not be drain through pipeline to people’s homes. It happened as the water in the cistern was very limited so that it did not have strong enough pressure to be flowed to people’s houses. “People who need clean water should take to the public cistern,” said Musna.

All this time, a total of 15 public cisterns had been established. The water was flowed from the Toya Panon spring.

The 15 cisterns were assisted by the readers of Bali Post daily newspaper.

Related to the regular ngusaba kayehan, the chief of local customary village, Nyoman Terus, said that the ritual was habitually organized on the full

moon of September. Procession of the ritual was once presented in the cultural paraded held in the town of Amlapura recently. It was intended to conserve and foster people’s love to local wisdom for the welfare of society in terms of spiritual and physical aspect.

The tradition of ngusaba kayehan (bathing place) or ngusaba negen (bearer) was alleged to have existed at local village from ancient time where the ancestors performed a meditation to local deities at the area of Manik Aji hamlet, Ban village. It was intended to invoke boon in the form of spring denoting the source of livelihood for the residents of Ban village where the village was barren and people were difficult to get clean water. Upon the request of residents who were crying and shedding tears (Balinese, Toya Panon), the deities then bestowed a spring which never dried out even though the spring often declined during long dry season.

As an expression of gratitude, the residents of Ban village regularly held the ngusaba kayehan or ngusaba tegen ritual on the full moon in September.

As the means used in the ritual, each native villager presented crops such as maize, cassava or sweet potatoes and fried cake carried to Puseh Temple. The crops were then collected in the long pavilion. (013)

Apple charts new course with large iPhones, smartwatch

SAN FRANCISCO - Apple moved to recapture its role as a tech trend-setter on Tuesday with its highly anticipated first smartwatch and two large-screen versions of the iPhone.

With the debuts of Apple Watch and iPhone 6 models stretched to fit a hot “phablet” trend, the California company delivered what rumors had predicted leading up to the event.

The Apple Watch, a sleek wrist device that links to the iPhone, “will redefine what people expect from this category,” chief executive Tim Cook said at a carefully staged presentation in Apple’s hometown Cupertino, California.

Market tracker IHS saw Apple as aiming to reset the wearable computing market the way it transformed the world of smartphones with the release of the iPhone.

“But moving into a new category is a bold, expensive and risky effort,” IHS said in an initial analysis of the Apple announcements.

Despite an array of smartwatch releases, no one seems to have found the key to the market, according to analyst Roger Kay of Endpoint Technologies.

Syncing Apple Watch capabilities to iPhones also means that the overall cost of strapping one on could near $1,000, Kay noted.

“I’m not getting the impression that Apple has nailed the category,” Kay told AFP. The latest Apple announcement failed to move Wall Street, with stock in the computer titan closing down by 0.4 percent and slipping a touch further in after-market trades.

The iPhone 6 models boost screen sizes in what some see as the company catching up to a “phablet” trend combining features of

smartphones and tablets.

DETROIT — Honda shared its vision of the hands-free highway commute Tuesday, a car that can safely drive itself on the freeway while the driver’s hands are off the wheel.

While the car is just a prototype, Honda says the technology could start appearing on Honda cars in 2020 and beyond.

The prototype — an Acura RLX sedan — has cameras that monitor lane marking and multiple radar sensors on the front and sides. On top is a beacon that uses laser beams to continually scan the car’s surroundings, similar to self-driving prototypes already introduced by

Google, Ford and Toyota. GPS also helps the car stay on a previously mapped course and follow the speed limit.

On a loop around Detroit, the car’s driver took his hands off the wheel as the car entered the freeway. It accelerated to the speed limit and applied the brakes if it got too close to a car in front. It signaled to change lanes and waited for an opening. The car merged easily onto two other freeways and edged to the left to avoid a construction zone. To exit, the car reduced its speed to 35 miles per hour on the ramp.

The driver’s hands remained off the wheel for the entire eightmile loop. But Honda says the car

will automatically return control to the driver if it senses it can’t handle a situation. One example: If a car cuts in front of the Honda too closely and fast braking is needed.

Honda has been working on this prototype car in Japan for about a year, but it’s the result of decades of safety research, said Hironobu Kiryu, the car’s chief engineer.

“Honda is aiming to eliminate accidents, not just for the driver but for pedestrians and drivers of other cars,” he said.

The company is showing the car in Detroit this week as part of the Intelligent Transport Systems World Congress, an annual gathering of engineers and other researchers.

Such coconut shell craft has been deeply involved by residents of Penaka hamlet since decades ago. Various motifs such as eagle, dragon and puppet are carved on the coconut shells to make it a more valuable work of art. “This kind of

art is passed down from my father to me. Meanwhile, I started to learn this since a dozen years ago,” said Made Mustika, a craftsman from Penaka hamlet, Tampaksiring.

According to Mustika, carving on coconut shells indeed required

patience. Armed with knife and filer, this father of two children carved coconut shells each day. A motif with full of carvings could be made within one month, while regular motif could be accomplished within a week. “A new coconut shell must

be cleaned from its fiber and then should immediately be filed. It is not necessary to be dried under the sun,” he said.

Mustika explained that coconut shell carving was best favored by Europe travelers. Even, they were willing to spend millions of rupiahs for a coconut shell carving. Meanwhile, the other kinds of carvings were usually sold for IDR 40,000 to IDR 1 million. “Dominant buyers are from Europe, but there is also a small number of from Asia,”

he said.

Other than for carving craft, the coconut shell was also made into souvenirs with a variety of designs, ranging from women’s accessories such as tongs, picture frames and household utensils such as spoons and bowls. In addition, the coconut shells could also be used to make drinking glass, lamp cover, spoon, fork or vegetable spoon. With a touch of very fine art, the coconut shell craft could look very artistic. DENPASAR - The exports of plastic crafts created by Balinese artisans reached US$13,132 million during the period between January and July this year.

The exports have increased by 43.21 percent as compared to US$9,170 million recorded during the same period last year, Panasunan Siregar, the head of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of Bali, stated on Tuesday.

He affirmed that the realization of foreign trade for plastic craft items has increased by 40.18 per-

cent from 11,985 million units in the first seven months of 2013 to 16,802 million units in the same period in 2014.

The plastic craft industry is among the six types of cottage industries, which have successfully managed to penetrate the foreign markets by contributing 4.36 percent to Bali’s total export value of US$300, 957 million.

Siregar noted that of all the plastic souvenirs exported, 11.80 percent were sold in the Italian market, following the United States at 3.89 percent, Spain 2.99 percent, Singapore 2.83 percent, French 2.82,

Japan 1.97 percent, Germany 1.69 percent, and UK 0.98 percent.

Meanwhile, the remaining 67.79 percent of the total exported plastic souvenirs were sent to various other countries around the world.

Balinese artists showcase their creativity by making various kinds of souvenirs from plastic raw materials, and therefore, their products are fairly competitive in the international markets and are in demand in foreign countries.

The souvenirs feature various types of ornamental designs that are ideal for living rooms, bedrooms, and hotels.

Freelance guide hunted by Municipal Police

DENPASAR - A number of freelance tourist guides are often at issue in the circle of tourism businesspeople. On the one hand, they are hunted by the authorities, but on the other hand it is difficult to get license. Even, the tour guides handling guests often play hide-and-seek with the authorities because the driver does not have a permit. Interestingly, the unlicensed also has its own association because the license was complicated by the government. At the end, they are raided by municipal police at tourist attraction.

On Tuesday (Sep 9), at least three freelance tourist guides were trialed in the Denpasar District Court. They

were Panca Hermawan, 32, Yusiman, 27, and Kadek Erna Johan, 31.

All the three were declared to have

violated because as a tourist guide escorting guests to tourist attraction or objects they should equipped

Sidewalk utilized to display goods Bali Post

GIANYAR - Sidewalk that should be earmarked for pedestrians seems not valid for the road section in the tourist area of Ubud- Tegallalang, Gianyar. The area better known as the world’s longest row of art shops indeed has become a tourist destination.

However, the condition of the arrangement in the area seems to have been neglected by the existence of the merchandise displayed along the sidewalk.

Aside from the merchandise belonging to the art shops, some-

times the trucks such as container truck also take advantage of the sidewalk to load and unload their freights. As field observation on Tuesday (Sep 9), the unloading truck disrupted the sidewalk.

After the reading of the indictment, the defendants without being accompanied by lawyers underwent it by themselves. They stated to have understood about the indictment and did not object. The trial was resumed with substantiation, namely presenting witnesses from the municipal police of Bali Province who made the arrest, and one of the civil servant investigators. Basically the freelance tourist guides recognized their faults and regretted the act. Based on the testimony, the prosecutor then sued the defendant with a fine of IDR 2 million and subsidiary penalty of two months for each defendant.

Responding to the demands, the three defendants pleaded for leniency, so that the judges after deliberation decided if the three defendants were proved guilty in appropriate with the charges in the Article 4 paragraph (1) in conjunction with the Article 14 of the Regional Bylaw No.5/2008 on tourist guide and fined them at IDR 1 million and subsidiary penalty of 20 days confinement. Pedophilia offender sued for five years

NEGARA - Individual officer of the West Bali National Park (TNBB) becoming a defendant in the pedophile case, I Made Sumanayasa aka Boceng, 51, was charged five years in prison. Public Prosecutor in the trial at the Negara District Court sued Boceng to have committed abuse against a minor, Tuesday (Sep 9). The prosecutor also included a fine worth IDR 80 million and subsidiary sentence of 5 months in prison.

Earlier, in the indictment Boceng

was charged to have violated Article 82 of Law No. 23/2002 about child abuse, with a penalty of 3 to 15 years in prison and a fine of IDR 60 million to IDR 300 million. The closed trial only lasted for 5 minutes with the reading of the charges by the public prosecutor Chalida K Hapsari and Ni Ketut Lilik Suryanti.

Boceng through his legal counsel, I Nyoman Karinata, responded to the demands and would deliver a defense in the upcoming trial. After the trial, Karinata told reporters that the demand of the prosecutor to the defendant was still too heavy.

According to him, one of the considerations was that the victim had forgiven Boceng.

As reported earlier, Boceng was arrested by arrested after committing sexual abuse against a number of boys at the official residence of the West Bali National Park at Gilimanuk. The victims were boys with a number of rewards and clothes.

Harris Seminyak warming party IBP

SEMINYAK - The latest addition to Harris collection of hotels opened her doors to the public this past Friday, August 8th with a stimulating mix of Brazilian and 50’s influences.

Guests were greeted by retro secretaries, signature orange carpets and the in-house band at the Café before being taken on a guided tour of the facilities which featured some fun surprises along the way.

Aside from the toured facilities, Harris Hotel Seminyak also has a beach facility, ten minutes away by free buggy shuttle on Seminyak Beach, along with three on-site swimming pools, one kids pool (total five pools include Flying Pool), Internet Corner, Dino Kids Club on Lobby level, and five meeting rooms with capacity for up to 85 person.

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

The British heartthrobs’ fourth album -entitled, simply, “Four” -- will go on sale on November 17. In a message to fans on their website, One Direction offered free downloads for one day of the first track, entitled “Fireproof.”

“Fireproof” stays largely true to One Direction’s style, with light guitar-based pop backing up multiple singers, avoiding the heavier sound with which the band flirted on their last album, “Midnight Memories.”

“If a movie can help one other person get through a tough time, that’s the gift.”

Her co-star in “Wild,” Laura Dern, however, welcomed the critics’ praise, saying “movies that have this level of truth and importance for all of us should be... seen by the world -- and the more support, that’s great news.”

“Chick flick my ass!” said “Wild” director Jean-Marc Vallee, slamming reviews that mistakenly classified the movie.

The 38-year-old Witherspoon has been one of Hollywood’s highest-paid and most bankable box office draws since her breakout starring turn in the 2001 comedy “Legally Blonde.”

But she failed to gain credibility as a serious actress until her 2006 Oscar win for her role as singer June Carter Cash -- the wife of superstar Johnny Cash -- in James Mangold’s biopic “Walk the Line.”

“Wild” is beautifully shot by Vallee, whose previous feature “Dallas Buyers

Club” began its journey to Oscar success in Toronto last year.

Availability of tourist accommodation on Yeh Gangga Beach remained some few, even though many coastal borderlines had been owned by investors. “The development of tourist accommodation is now dependent on the investors.

Probably, some may have been

developed but not been recorded yet,” said Adnyana.

Though it had been owned by investors, according to Adnyana, Tabanan government would provide protection for local residents. Accommodation could only be built on unproductive farming land so that the land of residents could be well maintained and not converted. “Other than for meeting the food needs, the paddy fields can also be developed into agrotourism. Thus, the accommodation can only be built on unproductive land,” said Adnyana.

Tabanan government also set Yeh Gangga as a tourist destination based on the Regent Regulation No.470/1998. “In order to develop the Yeh Gangga, Tabanan government has developed Sudimara village where Yeh Gangga belongs to one of its hamlets,” said Adnyana.

Sudimara village included one of the tourism villages obtaining grants from the National Program for Tourism Self-Empowerment (PNPMP) since 2011 to develop the tourism potential at the Sudimara village. (kmb24)
