‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ Slings to Massive $117 Million Domestic Opening

LOS ANGELES - Spider-Man is officially a box office overachiever. As of Sunday morning, the latest cinematic depiction of the webbed-hero, “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” is looking at a $117 million opening from 4,348 locations. $10.6 million of the domestic total came from 392 Imax screens. That’s a huge win for Sony, Columbia Pictures, and Marvel Studios for the film, which cost roughly $175 million to produce. The anticipated opening weekend is higher than industry estimates, which were in the $90 million to $110 million range, while the studio cautiously pegged it at $80 million.

“Everyone at Sony and Marvel are thrilled,” said Josh Greenstein, Sony’s marketing chief. “It’s safe to say it’s a triumphant return for Spider-Man.” “Homecoming” banked on the idea that the summer box office was craving a family-friendly superhero movie -- Tom Holland plays a high school version of Peter Parker who, at 15 years old, has to prove that he is worthy of being called an Avenger. And it seems that bet is paying off. The $117 million figure is the second largest in Sony Pictures history, behind “Spider-Man 3.”

Much attention has been paid to the flick’s successful marketing campaign, which heavily featured Iron Man (Robert Downy Jr.), who serves as Spider-Man’s mentor in the film. Michael Keaton plays the big bad, Vulture, Jon Favreau plays Spidey’s guardian, Happy Hogan, and Zendaya stars as Michelle Jones (“MJ”), Parker’s brainy classmate.

The movie consistently dominated social media in the weeks leading up to its release.

Before “Homecoming,” Jon Watts directed two much lowerbudget feature films -- the 2014 horror movie “Clown” and 2015’s “Cop Car” starring Kevin Bacon. He also has a handful of writing and producing credits, and is one of six writers credited on the “Homecoming” script. Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal share production credit. While the former has proven essentially infallible in the biz, “Homecoming”

serves as a redemption narrative for the latter. After the infamous 2014 Sony hack, Pascal was ousted from her post at the top of the studio, and began to focus on producing. This is her second major release following last summer’s “Ghostbusters” reboot, but she also has a hand in a long list of upcoming projects including Sony’s “Barbie” movie, Steven Spielberg’s A-list-studded “The Papers,” and future “SpiderMan” movies. “We have incredible partners,” said Greenstein, who said that those relationships helped the film to be “embraced in a big way.

It really shows the strength for this beloved character.”

Despite the reliability of superhero movies at the box office, “Homecoming” could have been seen as a big bet for all parties involved. For one, it’s the third iteration of the character in the past 15 years -- before Holland, Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire donned the Spidey suit. The makers had to trust that audiences would be ready to see the character yet again. On top of that, the summer box office has not been particularly kind to the sequels and reboots that have become the industry’s summer signature. As audience fatigue has impacted previously reliable franchises like “Transformers” and even “Despicable Me,” the one thing that this summer has proved is that the domestic audience is not yet burnt out on superheroes.

“Homecoming” is the only major release this weekend, so the rest of the top five are made up to familiar faces. Starting with “Despicable Me 3,” which is headed for a $34 million second frame, or a 53% drop from last weekend. “Baby Driver” should sit comfortable in third, as positive word of a mouth is steering to a $12.8 million second weekend, or a 38% drop. “Wonder Woman” continues to hold on with $10.1 million in its sixth weekend, and

“Transformers: The Last Knight” should round out the top five with $6.3 million.

Kumail Nanjiani’s “The Big Sick” is entering the top ten as it expands toward wide release, starting next Friday. From 326 North American theaters this weekend the movie should make $3.7 million.

Sofia Coppola’s “The Beguiled” should stay in the top ten as it, too, expands. This weekend it’s expected to make $2.1 million from 941 locations. Meanwhile, A24’s “A Ghost Story” starring Rooney Mara and Casey Affleck should spook $105,000 from four locations during its opening frame.

Overall, the summer box office stands at about $2.3 billion, or 8% lower than last year. That leaves the

year overall about dead even with 2016 after movies like “Beauty and the Beast,” “Logan,” “Get Out” and “The Fate of the Furious” laid a strong foundation for the summer during the early part of the calendar year.

“Despite the strength of ‘SpiderMan: Homecoming,’ yet another ‘down’ weekend puts us dead even with last year’s box office pace as we remain down 8% for the summer,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at ComScore.

“The silver lining is the expected continued strength of Spidey, plus ‘War For The Planet of The Apes,’ ‘Dunkirk,’ and ‘Atomic Blonde’ all in rapid succession that could fuel a much-needed late summer renaissance at the multiplex.”(rtr)

Germans angry over ‘orgy of violence’ at Merkel’s pre-election G20

BERLIN - Germans expressed anger on Sunday over violence that hit a G20 world leaders’ summit in Hamburg, raising awkward questions for Chancellor Angela Merkel less than three months before an election. About 20,000 police struggled to contain several hundred anti-capitalist militants who torched cars, looted shops and hurled Molotov cocktails and stones during the July 7-8 summit. Tens of thousands more people demonstrated peacefully.

Overall, 476 officers suffered injuries ranging from cuts and firework burns to eye damage from laser pointers. Police said on Sunday they had arrested 186 people and took 225 into custody. German newspapers devoted far more space to pictures of police firing water cannon onto hooded anarchists and other protestors than they did to Merkel’s diplomatic balancing act with fellow leaders of major world economies.

“Embarrassment for Germany”

was Tagesspiegel’s description.

“The pictures of helpless police who could not secure state order and protection of property are a political catastrophe,” columnist Gerd Nowakowski wrote in the paper. Top-selling Bild am Sonntag splashed pictures of masked anarchists and politicians on its front page with the headline “Criminals and Losers”. Inside, a political scientist described the scenes as an ‘orgy of violence’.

International media have focused more on U.S. President Donald Trump’s first meeting with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin at the summit, as well as Trump’s diverging views on climate change and trade from those of the other leaders.

Nevertheless, an Emnid poll showed that a majority of Germans, 59 percent, believed the riots damage the image of their country - even though violence has affected a number of international meetings around

the world over the years. Merkel was forced to defend her choice of Hamburg, saying other cities, like London, had hosted similar meetings. Hamburg, a seaport which is Germany’s second biggest city, has a strong radical leftist tradition. It was also home to an al Qaeda cell that carried out the 9/11 attacks on U.S. targets in 2001.

Merkel had wanted to demonstrate to G20 partners, including Putin and Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, her commitment to freedom of speech and rejected the notion that some cities were out of bounds as summit venues.

The strategy has backfired, said some commentators. “I can barely

breathe with anger because Chancellor Merkel and Hamburg mayor (Olaf) Scholz trivialise the brutal riots as ‘not acceptable’,” wrote a commentator in Bild am Sonntag.

The Social Democrats (SPD), trailing Merkel’s conservatives by 12-15 percentage points in polls, squarely blamed Merkel.

PDI-P Denpasar registers Rai Mantra to DPD After being verified by Team 5 in charge of doing the selection, the documents of Rai Mantra are declared to have been complete. Subsequently, the documents were submitted to PDIP Denpasar to be further registered to Nawa Sanga Team in the PDI-P Bali. At the time of registration at the provincial executive board (DPD),

in addition to the ranks of the PDI-P Denpasar along with his Team 5, it was also attended by prospective gubernatorial candidate Rai Mantra followed by hundreds of supporters.

The arrival of the PDI-P Denpasar entourage was received by Nawa Sanga Team Leader of PDI-P Bali, Wayan Sutena, with its members.

It was also seen the management of PDI-P Bali, namely Secretary of the PDI-P Bali, IGN Jaya Negara.

On the occasion, Sutena declared the documents presented by PDIP Denpasar have been complete.

PDI-P Denpasar brought two registration documents, namely that of prospective gubernatorial candidate

on behalf I.B. Rai Dharmawijaya Mantra and prospective deputy gubernatorial candidate I Gusti Agung Rai Wirajaya.

“Both files are temporarily declared to be complete. Later on, if any other documents needed, we will coordinate with the district administrator,” said Sutena when receiving the registration files of the prospective gubernatorial and deputy gubernatorial candidate from Chairman of the PDI-P Denpasar, Ngurah Gede.

Supriadi, said that actually there are three people taking out a registration form of the prospective gubernatorial and deputy gubernatorial candidate, namely I.B. Rai Dharmawijaya Mantra as prospective gubernatorial candidate while I Gusti Agung Rai Wirajaya and Cok Ace as prospective deputy gubernatorial candidate.

However, the registration form was only re-submitted by two people, namely Rai Mantra and Rai Wirajaya.

Toekad Rafting still operates

Police prepare article 359 of Criminal Code GIANYAR —A day after the death incident of a tourist from China, Wang Yumei, in Ayung River, in fact it did not dampen tourist visits to Toekad Rafting. On Sunday (Jul. 9) it was still showered with rain to trigger the swift flow of Ayung River. In the meantime, police that handle this case has prepared Article 359 of the Criminal Code on negligence causing the death.

yesterday I was asked by my superior to prohibit media from taking pictures without permission. If wishing to meet the management, please wait I will coordinate first,” said an employee of Toekad Rafting asking for anonymity.

Not long after, another employee claiming to be named Budi knowing the arrival of the media immediately asked to move from the seat and go.

“Do not sit here, tourists are crowded, so that give them (tourists) space to sit,” he asked.

When asked about insurance for all visitors, he said that every guest taking the tour has been already covered with insurance. “Well, there is insurance where the premium has been included,” he explained.

Again, his side claimed that would not give any comments related to the death case of Wang Yumei when taking rafting adventure handled by

Toekad Rafting. Budi said that the management was in Denpasar and would be back in the afternoon. He suggested the media to come back in the afternoon if wishing to meet the management.

In the meantime, Chief of Payangan Police, Gde Endrawan, said the ranks of Gianyar Police Criminal Investigation Unit have already conducted an examination to the victim’s family on Sunday morning. “Victim’s family wants to go back to their country, but the process of investigation will continue. On Sunday morning, police have done the examination,” he said.

When asked about Toekad Rafting remaining to operate in the middle of high rainfall, Endrawan said that police can ensnare with Article 359 of the Criminal Code on negligence that resulted in one’s death. (kmb35)

China tests self-sustaining space station in Beijing

There are about 500 cars parked every day in the road border of Jalan Hanoman and around Jalan Monkey Forest.

BEIJING - Sealed behind the steel doors of two bunkers in a Beijing suburb, university students are trying to find out how it feels to live in a space station on another planet, recycling everything from plant cuttings to urine.

They are part of a project aimed at creating a self-sustaining ecosystem that provides everything humans need to survive.

Four students from Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics entered the Lunar Palace-1 on Sunday with the aim of living self-sufficiently for 200 days.

They say they are happy to act as human guinea-pigs if it means getting closer to their dream of becoming astronauts.

“I’ll get so much out of this,” Liu Guanghui, a PhD student, who entered the bunker on Sunday, said. “It’s truly a different life experience.”

President Xi Jinping wants China to become a global power in space exploration, with plans to send the first probe to the dark

side of the moon by 2018 and to put astronauts on the moon by 2036. The Lunar Palace 365 experiment may allow them to stay there for extended periods.

For Liu Hong, a professor at Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics and the project’s principal architect, said everything needed for human survival had been carefully calculated.

“We’ve designed it so the oxygen (produced by plants at the station) is exactly enough to satisfy the humans, the animals, and the organisms that break down the waste materials,” she said.

But satisfying physical needs is only one part of the experiment, Liu said. Charting the mental impact of confinement in a small space for such a long time is equally crucial.

“They can become a bit de-

pressed,” Liu said. “If you spend a long time in this type of environment it can create some psychological problems.”

Liu Hui, a student leader who participated an initial 60-day experiment at Lunar Palace-1 that finished on Sunday, said that she sometimes “felt a bit low” after a day’s work.

The project’s support team has found mapping out a specific set of daily tasks for the students is one way that helps them to remain happy.

But the 200-day group will also be tested to see how they react to living a for period of time without sunlight. The project’s team declined to elaborate.

“We did this experiment with animals... so we want to see how much impact it will have on people,” Liu, the professor, said. (rtr)

Driving under the influence in car powered by whisky biofuel LONDON - Alcohol and automobiles famously do not mix - but one Scottish scientist has disproved that maxim by driving a car powered by biofuel derived from making whisky.

Edinburgh-based Celtic Renewables has developed a process to manufacture the biofuel biobutanol from draff and pot ale - barley kernels and a yeasty liquid that are produced when whisky is made and then usually thrown away.

Martin Tangney, the president of Celtic Renewables and director of Edinburgh Napier University’s Biofuel Research Centre, said that a desire to effectively manage resources had inspired him to pursue the project.

“What I did was I look at this as a business innovation as much as a technical innovation and thought: ‘if 70 percent of the cost of production is coming from the raw materials – why not tackle that end of it?’” he told Reuters by telephone on Friday.

Tangney showed the new fuel’s efficiency by driving a rental car filled with the mixture around the university’s car park this week.

Tangney said that Celtic would

get inexpensive or free raw materials from the distillery it works with, who were keen to cut the 300,000 pounds ($386,370.00) a year it costs to dispose of the whisky waste residues.

Biobutanol also has an advantage over other biofuels. More of it can be included in consumer petrol

- as much as 15 percent - without requiring engine modifications.

With the assistance of 9 million pounds of funding support from the Scottish government and other investors, the company plans to open a factory in 2018 that can produce 500,000 litres of the fuel annually. (rtr)

be parked in central parking having been provided.

“I have surveyed on Jalan Raya Ubud, Jalan Hanoman and around Jalan Monkey Forest, there are about

500 cars parked every day in the road border. In the future, all the vehicles must be brought to central parking having been prepared to keep the comfort of Ubud,” he said.

He was optimistic that the new parking space is able to accommodate all the cars frequently coming into Ubud including motorcycle. Therefore, he also planned to reforest the former parking area at Monkey Forest tourist attraction. Besides, the two old lobbies will now be transformed into one lobby located in the central parking area. “We will reforest the former parking lot. Previously, it could accommodate up to 200 more cars,” he said.

He added that if all the vehicles have been cleaned from the road sections, he also expected the government to be willing to allocate funds to make pedestrian in a number of road sections in Ubud. “So, the road sections all this time functioned as parking space will be transformed into a pedestrian. Thus, tourists will be more comfortable to have a promenade in Ubud,” he said.

When asked about the levies withdrawn from the central parking area, Gandra said it remains to be coordinated with the Gianyar transportation agency. Though there is no certainty he asserted to use parking mechanism as applied in the Ngurah Rai Airport. “Later on, we must refer to the rules made by local government.

As planned, we will apply the system resembling to the one applied in the airport so that it will run effectively,” he explained.

Police arrest effigy thief at eight temples

AMLAPURA — Theft of pratima or sanctified effigy is rampant again in Karangasem. After the incident at Dalem Temple of Nongan early this year and several other temples in Karangasem, this time similar incident occurred again at Bukit village, Karangasem, last Saturday (Jul. 8). However, this time police could immediately reveal the identity of the thief and arrested him at his home, not far from the location of the effigy theft. The act of perpetrator is quite disturbing because he has broken in eight temples at the village.

Chief of Karangasem Police, Gede Ardana, said on Sunday (Jul. 9) the perpetrator is I Wayan Juli Anggara Tama alias Pentong, 21.

The Hindu perpetrator from Bukit Kaler hamlet, Bukit, was originally known to have stolen effigies in several crime scenes, such as Mas Manik Temple at Kebon Bukit hamlet and Alit Pasek clan temple at Bukit Kaler hamlet. However, after developed, there were a total of eight temples broken in by Pentong. Other than both temples, six other temples are the Dadia Kelod clan temple at Bukit Kelod Temple, Dalem Temple of Bukit customary village, Mas Bingin Sari Temple at Bukit Kelod hamlet, Manuaba Temple at Bukit Kelod hamlet, Pasek clan temple at Bukit Kelod hamlet and Bale Agung Temple at Bukit Kelod.

Before arresting the perpetrator, police through operations unit received a report from local residents that there had been an effigy burglary from a storage box at Mas Bingin Sari Temple at Bukit Kelod hamlet around 16:30. After that, the operations unit headed by chief unit 1 and identification team of the criminal investigation carried out crime scene examination and identified missing items. In addition, police already interrogated some witnesses.

Furthermore, after getting some clues, police carried out more intensive investigations and obtained data that some other temples at Bukit village also suffered losses in the form of effigies. Armed with testimonies from witnesses, the team got information that there is a resident used to behave negatively. Police immediately suspected the person and conducted a search for the person.

Around 21:00, police managed to find the suspect Wjat. When interrogating the perpetrator, he initially gave crinkled information.

However, he could no longer dodge after all the testimonies of witnesses and evidences entirely pointed to him. Finally, he confessed his deeds that have stolen effigies at a number of temples at Bukit village.

“From the hands of the perpetrator, we secure some evidences. Now, we are still developing the case whether similar cases also occurred in other regions,” he said.

From the perpetrator’s hands, police secured some evidences, such as a triangular black gemstone, five pieces of perforated coins, ten old coins, and a tin of Sampoerna cigarette, a black purse and a box. Currently, police are still investigating the case by identifying evidences and examining further witnesses. (kmb31)

Residents of West Tegalbadeng protest chicken coop

NEGARA — Dozens of residents of Anyar hamlet, West Tegalbadeng, Negara, protested the existence of chicken coops having the impact on fly invasion. The three adjacent chicken coops located close to one another are not far from people’s settlement and have been operating for years. Lately, the fly invasion adequately disturbs the residents up to a radius of one kilometer from the chicken coops. Residents have also sent their objection to the local village authority last April and the owner has made a statement. However, within the past week the fly emerged again.

A number of residents met on Sunday (Jul. 9) hoped that such condition could be addressed immediately by village authority.

Moreover, from the information, the chicken farm business has not owned any permit yet. “Almost every day, even it (the invasion of flies) lasts until night,” said Komang Suara, one of the local residents.

According to residents, peak of the fly invasion occurred on Wednesday (Jul. 5) and on the piodalan or temple festival at subgroup meeting hall. At that time, residents gathered and found the fly invasion. Moreover, the residents living in a distance of one kilometer also feel the impact. Indeed, dozens of residents have expressed their protest, including the collection of a signature to village authority.

Japan PM Abe to reshuffle cabinet as support plunges to lowest since 2012

TOKYO - Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will reshuffle his cabinet and party leaders early next month, moving to shore up his worst levels of popular support since returning to power in 2012, following a historic loss in a Tokyo assembly election.

Last week’s loss, delivered by a novice political group, spotlights Abe’s potential vulnerability after nearly five years in power, with many blaming voter perceptions of arrogance on his part and that of his powerful Chief Cabinet Secretary, Yoshihide Suga.

Opinion polls on Monday showed Abe’s popularity at its lowest since he returned to power late in 2012, with support of 36 percent in one conducted by the conservative Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper - tumbling from 49 percent a month earlier.

Another, in the liberal Asahi, found support of 33 percent, a slide from 38 percent from a week earlier, with 60 percent of independent voters not supporting Abe’s cabinet - numbers Suga said the premier was aware of.

“I believe he wants to sincerely accept this as the voice of the people,”

Suga told a news conference, adding that the administration needed to “be even more earnest” about tasks such as rebuilding the economy.

Abe, in Europe for a summit of leaders of the G20 grouping of ations, told traveling media he would retain core officials in the reshuffle of the cabinet and ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) officials planned for August.

“I will reshuffle the LDP leadership and the Cabinet members early next month, aiming to renew peoples’ feelings,” Jiji news agency quoted Abe as saying in Stockholm.

“Stability is extremely important to deliver results. The core structure of the Cabinet should not be changed so often.”

Japanese media said the remarks mean he will retain Deputy Prime Minister Taro Aso, who also serves as finance minister, along

with Suga and LDP number two Toshihiro Nikai, while ditching gaffe-prone Defence Minister Tomomi Inada.

He also said he would skip a planned visit to Estonia and would arrive back in Japan a day early to visit the flood-devastated southwest.

Reshuffling the cabinet is a step often taken by beleagured leaders to repair popularity, but Suga denied that was the case.

“The prime minister is himself selecting the best person for each job in order to achieve what we have to do,” he said.

Exactly a year ago, Abe’s ruling bloc stormed to a landslide victory in an election for parliament’s upper house, despite concerns over his economic policies and plans to revise the nation’s postwar constitution.

CARACAS - Galvanized by the release from jail of hardline leader Leopoldo Lopez, Venezuelan opposition supporters on Sunday marked 100 days of protests against a socialist government they blame for political repression and economic misery.

Thousands of people gathered in an east Caracas square to hear opposition figures including the wife of Lopez, Lilian Tintori, speak.

Many protests have ended in clashes between masked youths and security forces, with more than 90 killed, hundreds arrested and thousands injured since the unrest began at the start of April.

“We’re not giving up. That Leopoldo is home fills us with the strength to keep fighting,” said Maria Garcia, a 54-year-old homemaker clad in a white T-shirt

bearing his image, as she gathered with friends at the rally.

While Lopez was at home with his two young children, Tintori, who has campaigned for him around the world including during a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump in the Oval Office, said she was relieved to have her husband home but the fight was not over.

“I can’t say I’m happy when we know our country is suffering, when there are children eating out of the trash, when there is no medicine in Venezuela,” she said, surrounded by opposition legislators.

Cardinal Pell arrives in Australia to face sexual offence charges

SYDNEY - A top Vatican official charged in his native Australia with historical sex crimes arrived in Sydney on Monday ahead of his first court appearance later this month.

Australia’s Nine Entertainment Co Ltd broadcast video of Cardinal George Pell being whisked away from Sydney airport early on Monday morning.

Australian police said late last month Pell, an adviser to Pope Francis, faced multiple charges of “historical sexual offences” from multiple complainants. That makes the Vatican economy minister the highest-ranking Church official to face such accusations.

Pell has declared his innocence and said he would return to Australia to clear his name.

The Sydney Catholic archdiocese said on Monday Pell’s return “should not be a surprise” because he had already said he would return to defend himself against the charges.

It said in a statement Pell “consulted his doctors and on their advice took several days to return home, breaking his journey in a number of places to avoid longhaul flights”.

Pell had said he was too sick to fly home to testify at a government inquiry into child abuse in 2016.

BUSINESS China’s June factory price inflation subdued on modest raw materials recovery

BEIJING - China’s producer price inflation was unchanged in June and remained well off highs seen earlier this year, amid lingering oversupply issues in the steel sector and as signs of economic weakness weighed on the outlook for prices.

The producer price index (PPI) rose 5.5 percent in June from a year earlier, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said on Monday. This was in line with analyst forecasts and unchanged from the previous month. Prices of raw materials are making a modest recovery, helped by stronger futures prices in China over the past few weeks, after an earlier hit taken from a broader cooling in economic activity since March.

China’s June consumer prices rose 1.5 percent from a year earlier, in line with market expectations and May’s reading, the NBS said, with food prices continuing their declines albeit at a slower pace.

There are some concerns among analysts that price pressures could weaken throughout the rest of the year as economic fundamentals soften. “The upshot is that, having eased in previous months, price pressures appear to have stabilised in June,” Julian Evans-Pritchard from Capital Economics in Singapore wrote in a note. “Nonetheless, with slowing credit growth likely to weigh on economic activity in coming quarters we think that, volatility in food prices aside, inflation still has further to fall. This will disappoint those hoping for a sustained period of reflation that could help to erode corporate debt burdens.”

Food prices, the biggest component of the consumer price index, fell at a slower 1.2 percent from the previous year, after sliding 1.6 percent in May and 3.5 percent in April.

“Falling food prices can be attributed to a high build-up of food reserves and seasonal factors,” Zhu Baoliang, chief economist at the State Information Center (SIC), said, according to a story published on Monday in China’s Financial News newspaper, affiliated with the People’s Bank of China (PBOC).

Tepid inflation comes despite signs of a pickup in factory activity. China’s manufacturing sector expanded at the quickest pace in three months in June, buoyed by strong production and new orders. Meanwhile, spot iron ore and construction steel prices have risen as investors continued to focus on China’s capacity cutbacks and industrial upgrade in the steel sector.

“High margins after the government’s effort to eliminate low-grade steel are enticing mills to produce more steel, which increases the need for iron ore,” said Zou Mingdong, Shanghai-based steel manager at Zhongcai Merchants Investment Group. “However, the rising price doesn’t change the fundamental situation of oversupply and weak demand.”

levels, and interest rates and credit conditions still loose, the report gave detailed attention to whether the financial system and bond markets posed any particular threat to the country’s eight-year economic expansion. The answer so far is no, said the Fed, noting that there is little evidence of a liquidity crunch in the corporate or other bond markets, and no evidence that rising asset values pose a problem. The structure of the corporate bond market is changing with new regulations, the Fed said, but by traditional measures shows only minimal strain in adapting.

“Vulnerabilities in the U.S. financial system remained, on balance, moderate,” concluded the report, submitted to Congress on behalf of the Fed’s Washington-based Board of Governors. “Valuation pressures across a range of assets and several indicators of investor risk appetite have increased further...However, these developments in asset mar-

kets have not been accompanied by increased leverage.”

The combination of rising asset values and rising leverage is considered particularly toxic, indicating that investments are being made with borrowed money and leaving investors unable to repay those debts if the value of the underlying assets decline. U.S. Treasury yields rose after the report, with the yield on the benchmark 10-year note near a more than eight-week high. U.S. stocks edged higher.

The release of the report on Friday comes ahead of Fed Chair Janet Yellen’s appearance next Wednesday and Thursday before the House and Senate committees that oversee the central bank and related issues.

The roughly 60-page document is largely a review of economic and policy developments since the last report, in February.

In this instance the document took on a steady-as-she-goes qual-

ity. Growth in the first quarter was slow at about 1-1/2 percent on an annualized basis, and inflation took a step backward. But consumer confidence remained strong, and “business investment has turned up....The housing market continues its gradual recovery. Economic growth has also been supported by recent strength in foreign activity.”

The government on Friday said nonfarm payrolls surged by 222,000 in June and workers put in more hours but average hourly earnings grew a modest 0.2 percent.

Along with the discussion of financial conditions, however, the Fed did highlight some long-term problems. The central bank noted that weak productivity growth may become entrenched as a “new normal,” and could be one reason wage growth remains weak. Unique, Magoak-goakan Tradition in Kintamani

Kintamani customary village held magoak-goakan tradition on Thursday (Mar. 23).

The tradition was attended by approximately 4,000 people ranging from children, adolescents, adults to the elderly.

The tradition was organized in a series of Nyepi Desa at the local customary village. From the morning, thousands of people putting on middle traditional attires have thronged the village square or sacred land to implement magoakgoakan tradition.

Not infrequently, the participants should turn upside down due to the sloping arena. In addition, a number of participants, especially women, were crushed by the other participants. Nevertheless, it did not reduce the enthusiasm of residents to follow the tradition.

Amid the activities, chief of Kintamani customary village, Nyoman Sukadia, said that magoak-goakan tradition has been started at 8:00 until midnight. This activity is routinely held every year considering this tradition is the legacy of ancestors that must continue to be preserved.

“The magoak-goakan tradition has something to do with religious ceremonies of Nyepi Desa of Kintamani village. This event has been organized since the full moon of Balinese ninth month (Mar. 12)

and the ceremony ended at 00:00 on Wednesday,” he said.

Sukadia explained that the magoak-goakan tradition aims to more establish relationship among the residents of Kintamani customary village. Moreover, this tradition is intended for preservation of the natural environment and wildlife.

The ceremony takes place on the full moon of the Balinese ninth month and during which is also held Jagra and Miasa.

After Le Mayeur found ‘home’ in the island and Ni Pollok, who soon became the muse of his paintings and the rest of his life, the artist created a range of artworks in his impressionistic ‘dob’ style of painting. His technique was considered unorthodox, albeit in a brilliant way. Le Mayeur utilized thick and rather stiff brushes to create sharp yet fluent caresses, which were later elaborated on by Antonio Blanco, another influential painter in Bali.

Le Mayeur passed away on May 31, 1958. The loving couple left no children but the well-crafted mansion that is the museum today, and its legacy was bequeathed to the Indonesian government. The museum exemplifies the priceless heritage of an artist and a nation.

The main building features the former living quarters of the couple, with classical Balinese elements, sculpted stone walls and red terrazzo floor tiles.

Carved wood dominates the furnishings, and window sills feature motifs inspired by wayang shadow puppet characters. There are five rooms that serve as silent witnesses to the lives of Le Mayeur and Ni Pollok. Visitors may imagine the similar love story brought again to life through inanimate objects, similar to the retro-styled storytelling of the film Titanic. Walkthroughs include the artist’s studio, reading room and study, and the bedroom as well as Ni Pollok’s vanity corner and bathroom.

Trump’s push to replace Obamacare faces trouble as U.S. Congress returns WASHINGTON - President Donald Trump’s effort to roll back Obamacare faced growing obstacles on Monday as Republicans who control the U.S. Senate remained sharply divided over how to keep down the costs of their healthcare bill and prevent millions from losing coverage.

White House chief of staff Reince Priebus told “Fox News Sunday” that Trump, who made repeal and replacement of Obamacare a central plank of his 2016 campaign, still expected the Senate to pass a healthcare bill either before the scheduled start of Congress’ August recess “or maybe a little bit into” the recess.

Other Republicans voiced pessimism.

“My view is that it’s probably going to be dead,” Senator John McCain of Arizona said of the healthcare legislation on the CBS program “Face the Nation.”

Some conservative senators, such as Ted Cruz of Texas and Rand Paul of Kentucky, have said they cannot support the proposal unless it goes further to repeal the 2010 Affordable Care Act, popularly known as Obamacare.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is weighing how to shore up support for the healthcare bill, which would repeal parts of Obamacare, former Democratic President Barack Obama’s signature legislation, and get rid of tax increases that fund it.

The Republican-controlled House of Representatives in May passed its own version of a bill overhauling healthcare.

McConnell warned at a luncheon in his home state of Kentucky last week that if Republicans were unable to pass their own replacement bill, they might need to work with Democrats to bolster the insurance markets created under Obamacare, according to the Associated Press.

During a week-long recess last week that coincided with the Fourth of July holiday, liberal groups organized town halls and protests and ran ads criticizing the proposal.

Most Republican senators kept a low profile on the issue, including McCain, who traveled to Afghanistan to visit troops, and Senator Jeff Flake, a fellow Arizonan who faces a tough reelection fight next year.

Last week, groups such as the state chapter of Planned Parenthood and Ability 360, an advocacy organization for disabled people, participated in events that spotlighted the Senate bill, including a town hall in Phoenix.

At the Phoenix event, there were empty chairs on a stage with placards for McCain and Flake, who were invited but did not attend.

Arizonans such as Rosemary Dixon, who had a kidney transplant in 2015 and worries about how she will pay for her medication, spoke about the potential impact of the legislation. (rtr)

JAKARTA - Indonesian state firms are courting foreign pension funds by offering a share in future revenue from toll roads, power stations and other infrastructure projects, as part of a presidential drive to secure $10 billion in additional inflows. Facing Brexit challenge, Britain’s May vows to fight on

LONDON - Britain’s Theresa May will promise to fight on as prime minister and pursue bold domestic reform despite her diminished authority in a speech this week relaunching her leadership after 12 tumultuous months in power.

As her minority government prepares to start the difficult task of passing Brexit through parliament, May will remind Britons of her promise to build a fairer society, seeking to repair a reputation damaged by an illjudged snap election.

Almost one year on from her first day as prime minister -- a job she took on after Britain’s shock referendum vote to leave the European Union -- May will urge voters and political opponents to help her “tackle the injustice and vested interests that threaten to hold us back”.

“My commitment to change in Britain is undimmed,” May will say on Tuesday, according to advanced extracts from her speech.

May called the election on June 8 in an attempt to cash in on high poll ratings and win support for her plan to make a clean break with the EU in 2019.

But the gamble backfired when voters stripped her of a majority in parliament and forced her party into a deal with

a small Northern Irish party to prop up a minority government.

“In this new context, it will be even more important to make the case for our policies and our values, and to win the battle of ideas both in parliament as well as in the country,” May will say.

CONFIDENCE May’s ability to carry on as prime minister and drive Brexit legislation through parliament with only a fragile majority behind her has been persistently questioned since the election.

But May’s position seems secure for now, with colleagues preferring to see her start Brexit talks rather than topple her and risk the government collapsing -- a scenario that could let a resurgent opposition Labour Party into power.

The first stage of the Brexit process will come later this week when a key piece of legislation, which translates EU law into British law, is presented to parliament.

Asked about media reports of plots to oust her, Green said it was simply “gossip and chatter” at summer parties.

May will make the appeal for national backing at the launch of a report into how the government should protect workers affected by a shift to different employment models, including the ‘gig economy’ championed by the likes of Uber and Deliveroo.

Widodo told Reuters this week that he had instructed ministers to market the country aggressively to investors, capitalising on Standard & Poor’s May 19 upgrade of its credit rating to investment grade.

Indonesia is hoping to attract the likes of Canada Pension Plan, Japan’s Government Pension Investment Fund (GPIF) and other institutional investors, Thomas Lembong, chairman of Indonesia’s investment coordinating board, told Reuters. “We can’t just sit back and wait for people to come because competition to attract capital flows is ferocious,” Lembong said. “Everything from toll roads to power plants to airports to ports should be securitised to capital markets.”

Indonesian Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati told Reuters ahead of the G20 summit in Hamburg on Thursday that the government plans to securitise projects that are “already active and revenue-generating”. That way, pension funds will not be involved in “the nitty-gritty of the new project or a project already being built so they can see the risk in a much

better way,” she said.

Under a securitisation model, a company typically issues a trustlike investment structure that is backed by future revenue from a project or an asset, with investors earning a certain rate of return.

POSITIVE INITIAL RESPONSE Indonesia’s biggest toll road operator, PT Jasa Marga Tbk , has begun working to securitise about half of the 4 trillion rupiah ($298.4 million) in revenue expected over five years from a road linking Jakarta to cities in West Java province. The securities - expected to offer annual returns of 8-9 percent over five years - have received a positive initial response from potential investors including pension funds, said Donny Arsal, Jasa Marga’s finance director.

State-controlled electricity firm Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) is issuing securities backed by the projected five-year income of 10 trillion rupiah from a power plant operated by its unit. PLN decided on this new investment structure

as it had already raised funds from bonds, bank loans and other sources, finance director Sarwono Sudarto said.

“There is already a limit to the existing models of funding,” Sudarto said, adding that under asset securitisation, there is no transfer of ownership of its physical asset.

There’s no guarantee the securitisation plans will succeed.

Andre Varian, a portfolio manager at BNI Asset Management, said the securities issued by state firms are relatively new in Indonesia and their returns are not much higher than those offered by other fixed-income assets. The lack of liquidity in the domestic market may also deter foreign investors, Varian said. “Foreign demand would be very limited since there is no liquidity.”

Varian added, however, that liquidity may be boosted over time partly because domestic pension funds and insurance firms are required to have a certain portion of investments in government bonds or infrastructure-linked securities. (rtr)

Froome stays in control after action-packed ninth stage CHAMBERY - Chris Froome escaped unscathed after an actionpacked ninth stage of the Tour de France as one his main rivals and his Team Sky lieutenant crashed out of the race on Sunday.

The defending champion, who was attacked by Fabio Aru just as he suffered a mechanical on the last climb, ended up third at the end of a 181-5km trek in the Jura mountains won by Colombian Rigoberto Uran ahead of France’s Warren Barguil.

Briton Froome had his rivals to thank, however, as none of them took turns in front while he was changing his bike in the lungbusting ascent to the Mont du Chat.

The scene was reminiscent of the 2010 Tour when Alberto Contador attacked Andy Schleck on the ascent to the Port de Bales when his rival’s chain snapped.

“I had a mechanical problem with my gears, I had to change bike,” said three-times champion Froome.

“I want to thank the other riders, who did not attack,” he added, saying he did not see Aru attacking past him as he raised his arm to ask for assistance.

“Richie (Porte) was quite instrumental in slowing that group down, saying this is not the time to attack the leader of the race, so thanks to Richie and I hope he makes a speedy recovery.”

Froome was already without team mate Geraint Thomas, who abandoned after crashing in the slippery descent of the Col de la Biche, one of three out-of-category ascents of the day. In the final descent to Chambery, Australian Porte, regarded as Froome’s main challenger ahead of the three-week event, went off the road into a wall of rocks.

SPIELBERG - Formula One rivals Sebastian Vettel and Daniel Ricciardo saw Valtteri Bottas take off like a rocket at the start of Sunday’s Austrian Grand Prix and concluded the Mercedes driver had either jumped the lights, got lucky or was not human.

Both immediately went on the radio to ask their teams, Ferrari and Red Bull respectively, whether the Finn had gone too soon.

And both were still shaking their heads in disbelief after Bottas was cleared of any misdemeanour and went on to win the race.

“I don’t want to take anything away from Valtteri, I think he drove an excellent race,” said Vettel, who finished second to extend his championship lead over Bottas’s team mate Lewis Hamilton to 20 points.

“But when I said I don’t believe, it’s because I don’t believe.

“I think normally the reaction times (to the lights) are around 0.2 for everyone. I don’t think that everyone was that much slower today, and that’s why I don’t believe that Valtteri was that much quicker,” Vettel added.

“I had a strong belief at the time that he jumped the start. Turned out he didn’t. But I can’t believe that his reaction time was 0.2. That would be normal and in my point of view his reaction was inhuman.

So...he said earlier that he is not human.”

The governing FIA said Bottas’s reaction time was 0.201 of a second. At the chequered flag, he beat Vettel by 0.658.

Ricciardo, who finished third for his fifth successive podium, joined

Vettel on the side of the sceptics with his own “two cents” worth of opinion.

“The lights were held for a long time, more than normal,” said the Australian.

“I did it in Formula Three before, once. It was on the edge, I’m sure you react, but at that same point the lights went out. In theory it’s not a natural reaction...I don’t believe he reacted to the lights.”

Bottas said it had simply been the best start of his life, but also one he had practised to perfection.

Sp rt Rooney in emotional Everton return after 13 years at United Wayne Rooney no longer has to hide his nighttime secret. Although the striker left Everton in 2004 in pursuit of glory with Manchester United, the affection for his boyhood club never truly diminished — even while winning every major honor in European soccer with United and becoming the all-time leading scorer for English soccer’s biggest club.

A reunion with Everton was mooted for years and it finally came on Sunday. The 31-year-old Rooney completed an emotional return across northwest England by signing a two-year contract at Goodison Park.

Rooney always maintained that Everton was the only other Premier League club he could contemplate playing for after United.

Everton, though, is not welcoming back a player as energetic and dangerous in front as goal as the precocious teenager who left in 2004. In the twilight of his career, Rooney is only available after dropping out of both the United and England teams he captained. Rooney’s hunger for the game, however, has never diminished. And after having to accept a reduced status over the last year for club and country, a return to Everton signals a fresh start.

It could even help Rooney regain his England place in time for the World Cup next June and extend his England goal record of 53.

Rooney will now be a central figure once again in an Everton team that is looking to break the Premier League’s elite under coach Ronald Koeman. “I have come back to Everton because I believe Ronald Koeman is building a team that can win something,” Rooney

said, “and I look forward to playing my part in making that a reality for the club I have supported since a boy.”

Everton is on the verge of selling Romelu Lukaku to United but has signed goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, center back Michael Keane, midfielder Davy Klaassen and striker Sandro Ramirez this offseason. Everton’s majority shareholder since February 2016, Iranian-British businessman Farhad Moshiri, wants to take the team higher than last season’s sixth place. Silverware is the target for a club whose last major trophy came with the 1995 FA Cup and won the ninth of its topflight titles in 1987.

“Wayne has shown me that ambition that we need and that winning mentality,” Koeman said. “He knows how to win titles and I’m really happy he’s decided to come home. He loves Everton and he was desperate to come back.

He is still only 31 and I don’t have any doubts about his qualities. It’s fantastic he’s here.”

Rooney scored a record 253 goals for United after moving from Everton for 27 million pounds as an 18-year-old in 2004, winning the Premier League title five times, the FA Cup once, the League Cup three times, the Champions League once and the Europa League last season.

“Thirteen years ago I went to United with the intention of winning trophies,”

Sp rt Rooney in emotional Everton return after 13 years at United Wayne Rooney no longer has to hide his nighttime secret. Although the striker left Everton in 2004 in pursuit of glory with Manchester United, the affection for his boyhood club never truly diminished — even while winning every major honor in European soccer with United and becoming the all-time leading scorer for English soccer’s biggest club.

A reunion with Everton was mooted for years and it finally came on Sunday. The 31-year-old Rooney completed an emotional return across northwest England by signing a two-year contract at Goodison Park.

In the twilight of his career, Rooney is only available after dropping out of both the United and England teams he captained. Rooney’s hunger for the game, however, has never diminished. And after having to accept a reduced status over the last year for club and country, a return to Everton signals a fresh start.

It could even help Rooney regain his England place in time for the World Cup next June and extend his England goal record of 53.

Rooney will now be a central figure once again in an Everton team that is looking to break the Premier League’s elite under coach Ronald Koeman. “I have come back to Everton because I believe Ronald Koeman is building a team that can win something,” Rooney

said, “and I look forward to playing my part in making that a reality for the club I have supported since a boy.”

Everton is on the verge of selling Romelu Lukaku to United but has signed goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, center back Michael Keane, midfielder Davy Klaassen and striker Sandro Ramirez this offseason. Everton’s majority shareholder since February 2016, Iranian-British businessman Farhad Moshiri, wants to take the team higher than last season’s sixth place. Silverware is the target for a club whose last major trophy came with the 1995 FA Cup and won the ninth of its topflight titles in 1987.

“Wayne has shown me that ambition that we need and that winning mentality,” Koeman said. “He knows how to win titles and I’m really happy he’s decided to come home. He loves Everton and he was desperate to come back.

He is still only 31 and I don’t have any doubts about his qualities. It’s fantastic he’s here.”

Rooney scored a record 253 goals for United after moving from Everton for 27 million pounds as an 18-year-old in 2004, winning the Premier League title five times, the FA Cup once, the League Cup three times, the Champions League once and the Europa League last season.

Froome stays in control after action-packed ninth stage CHAMBERY - Chris Froome escaped unscathed after an actionpacked ninth stage of the Tour de France as one his main rivals and his Team Sky lieutenant crashed out of the race on Sunday.

The defending champion, who was attacked by Fabio Aru just as he suffered a mechanical on the last climb, ended up third at the end of a 181-5km trek in the Jura mountains won by Colombian Rigoberto Uran ahead of France’s Warren Barguil.

Briton Froome had his rivals to thank, however, as none of them took turns in front while he was changing his bike in the lungbusting ascent to the Mont du Chat.

The scene was reminiscent of the 2010 Tour when Alberto Contador attacked Andy Schleck on the ascent to the Port de Bales when his rival’s chain snapped.

“I had a mechanical problem with my gears, I had to change bike,” said three-times champion Froome.

“I want to thank the other riders, who did not attack,” he added, saying he did not see Aru attacking past him as he raised his arm to ask for assistance.

“Richie (Porte) was quite instrumental in slowing that group down, saying this is not the time to attack the leader of the race, so thanks to Richie and I hope he makes a speedy recovery.”

Froome was already without team mate Geraint Thomas, who abandoned after crashing in the slippery descent of the Col de la Biche, one of three out-of-category ascents of the day. In the final descent to Chambery, Australian Porte, regarded as Froome’s main challenger ahead of the three-week event, went off the road into a wall of rocks.

SPIELBERG - Formula One rivals Sebastian Vettel and Daniel Ricciardo saw Valtteri Bottas take off like a rocket at the start of Sunday’s Austrian Grand Prix and concluded the Mercedes driver had either jumped the lights, got lucky or was not human.

Both immediately went on the radio to ask their teams, Ferrari and Red Bull respectively, whether the Finn had gone too soon.

And both were still shaking their heads in disbelief after Bottas was cleared of any misdemeanour and went on to win the race.

“I don’t want to take anything away from Valtteri, I think he drove an excellent race,” said Vettel, who finished second to extend his championship lead over Bottas’s team mate Lewis Hamilton to 20 points.

“But when I said I don’t believe, it’s because I don’t believe.

“I think normally the reaction times (to the lights) are around 0.2 for everyone. I don’t think that everyone was that much slower today, and that’s why I don’t believe that Valtteri was that much quicker,” Vettel added.

“I had a strong belief at the time that he jumped the start. Turned out he didn’t. But I can’t believe that his reaction time was 0.2. That would be normal and in my point of view his reaction was inhuman.

So...he said earlier that he is not human.”

Trump’s push to replace Obamacare faces trouble as U.S. Congress returns WASHINGTON - President Donald Trump’s effort to roll back Obamacare faced growing obstacles on Monday as Republicans who control the U.S. Senate remained sharply divided over how to keep down the costs of their healthcare bill and prevent millions from losing coverage.

White House chief of staff Reince Priebus told “Fox News Sunday” that Trump, who made repeal and replacement of Obamacare a central plank of his 2016 campaign, still expected the Senate to pass a healthcare bill either before the scheduled start of Congress’ August recess “or maybe a little bit into” the recess.

Other Republicans voiced pessimism.

“My view is that it’s probably going to be dead,” Senator John McCain of Arizona said of the healthcare legislation on the CBS program “Face the Nation.”

Some conservative senators, such as Ted Cruz of Texas and Rand Paul of Kentucky, have said they cannot support the proposal unless it goes further to repeal the 2010 Affordable Care Act, popularly known as Obamacare.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is weighing how to shore up support for the healthcare bill, which would repeal parts of Obamacare, former Democratic President Barack Obama’s signature legislation, and get rid of tax increases that fund it.

The Republican-controlled House of Representatives in May passed its own version of a bill overhauling healthcare.

McConnell warned at a luncheon in his home state of Kentucky last week that if Republicans were unable to pass their own replacement bill, they might need to work with Democrats to bolster the insurance markets created under Obamacare, according to the Associated Press.

During a week-long recess last week that coincided with the Fourth of July holiday, liberal groups organized town halls and protests and ran ads criticizing the proposal.

Most Republican senators kept a low profile on the issue, including McCain, who traveled to Afghanistan to visit troops, and Senator Jeff Flake, a fellow Arizonan who faces a tough reelection fight next year.

Last week, groups such as the state chapter of Planned Parenthood and Ability 360, an advocacy organization for disabled people, participated in events that spotlighted the Senate bill, including a town hall in Phoenix.

At the Phoenix event, there were empty chairs on a stage with placards for McCain and Flake, who were invited but did not attend.

Facing Brexit challenge, Britain’s May vows to fight on

LONDON - Britain’s Theresa May will promise to fight on as prime minister and pursue bold domestic reform despite her diminished authority in a speech this week relaunching her leadership after 12 tumultuous months in power.

As her minority government prepares to start the difficult task of passing Brexit through parliament, May will remind Britons of her promise to build a fairer society, seeking to repair a reputation damaged by an illjudged snap election.

Almost one year on from her first day as prime minister -- a job she took on after Britain’s shock referendum vote to leave the European Union -- May will urge voters and political opponents to help her “tackle the injustice and vested interests that threaten to hold us back”.

“My commitment to change in Britain is undimmed,” May will say on Tuesday, according to advanced extracts from her speech.

May called the election on June 8 in an attempt to cash in on high poll ratings and win support for her plan to make a clean break with the EU in 2019.

But the gamble backfired when voters stripped her of a majority in parliament and forced her party into a deal with

a small Northern Irish party to prop up a minority government.

“In this new context, it will be even more important to make the case for our policies and our values, and to win the battle of ideas both in parliament as well as in the country,” May will say.

CONFIDENCE May’s ability to carry on as prime minister and drive Brexit legislation through parliament with only a fragile majority behind her has been persistently questioned since the election.

But May’s position seems secure for now, with colleagues preferring to see her start Brexit talks rather than topple her and risk the government collapsing -- a scenario that could let a resurgent opposition Labour Party into power.

The first stage of the Brexit process will come later this week when a key piece of legislation, which translates EU law into British law, is presented to parliament.

Indonesia is hoping to attract the likes of Canada Pension Plan, Japan’s Government Pension Investment Fund (GPIF) and other institutional investors, Thomas Lembong, chairman of Indonesia’s investment coordinating board, told Reuters. “We can’t just sit back and wait for people to come because competition to attract capital flows is ferocious,” Lembong said. “Everything from toll roads to power plants to airports to ports should be securitised to capital markets.”

Indonesian Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati told Reuters ahead of the G20 summit in Hamburg on Thursday that the government plans to securitise projects that are “already active and revenue-generating”. That way, pension funds will not be involved in “the nitty-gritty of the new project or a project already being built so they can see the risk in a much

better way,” she said.

Under a securitisation model, a company typically issues a trustlike investment structure that is backed by future revenue from a project or an asset, with investors earning a certain rate of return.

POSITIVE INITIAL RESPONSE Indonesia’s biggest toll road operator, PT Jasa Marga Tbk , has begun working to securitise about half of the 4 trillion rupiah ($298.4 million) in revenue expected over five years from a road linking Jakarta to cities in West Java province. The securities - expected to offer annual returns of 8-9 percent over five years - have received a positive initial response from potential investors including pension funds, said Donny Arsal, Jasa Marga’s finance director.

State-controlled electricity firm Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) is issuing securities backed by the projected five-year income of 10 trillion rupiah from a power plant operated by its unit. PLN decided on this new investment structure

as it had already raised funds from bonds, bank loans and other sources, finance director Sarwono Sudarto said.

“There is already a limit to the existing models of funding,” Sudarto said, adding that under asset securitisation, there is no transfer of ownership of its physical asset.

There’s no guarantee the securitisation plans will succeed.

Andre Varian, a portfolio manager at BNI Asset Management, said the securities issued by state firms are relatively new in Indonesia and their returns are not much higher than those offered by other fixed-income assets. The lack of liquidity in the domestic market may also deter foreign investors, Varian said. “Foreign demand would be very limited since there is no liquidity.”

Varian added, however, that liquidity may be boosted over time partly because domestic pension funds and insurance firms are required to have a certain portion of investments in government bonds or infrastructure-linked securities. (rtr)

BUSINESS China’s June factory price inflation subdued on modest raw materials recovery

BEIJING - China’s producer price inflation was unchanged in June and remained well off highs seen earlier this year, amid lingering oversupply issues in the steel sector and as signs of economic weakness weighed on the outlook for prices.

The producer price index (PPI) rose 5.5 percent in June from a year earlier, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said on Monday. This was in line with analyst forecasts and unchanged from the previous month. Prices of raw materials are making a modest recovery, helped by stronger futures prices in China over the past few weeks, after an earlier hit taken from a broader cooling in economic activity since March.

China’s June consumer prices rose 1.5 percent from a year earlier, in line with market expectations and May’s reading, the NBS said, with food prices continuing their declines albeit at a slower pace.

There are some concerns among analysts that price pressures could weaken throughout the rest of the year as economic fundamentals soften. “The upshot is that, having eased in previous months, price pressures appear to have stabilised in June,” Julian Evans-Pritchard from Capital Economics in Singapore wrote in a note. “Nonetheless, with slowing credit growth likely to weigh on economic activity in coming quarters we think that, volatility in food prices aside, inflation still has further to fall. This will disappoint those hoping for a sustained period of reflation that could help to erode corporate debt burdens.”

Food prices, the biggest component of the consumer price index, fell at a slower 1.2 percent from the previous year, after sliding 1.6 percent in May and 3.5 percent in April.

“Falling food prices can be attributed to a high build-up of food reserves and seasonal factors,” Zhu Baoliang, chief economist at the State Information Center (SIC), said, according to a story published on Monday in China’s Financial News newspaper, affiliated with the People’s Bank of China (PBOC).

Tepid inflation comes despite signs of a pickup in factory activity. China’s manufacturing sector expanded at the quickest pace in three months in June, buoyed by strong production and new orders. Meanwhile, spot iron ore and construction steel prices have risen as investors continued to focus on China’s capacity cutbacks and industrial upgrade in the steel sector.

“High margins after the government’s effort to eliminate low-grade steel are enticing mills to produce more steel, which increases the need for iron ore,” said Zou Mingdong, Shanghai-based steel manager at Zhongcai Merchants Investment Group. “However, the rising price doesn’t change the fundamental situation of oversupply and weak demand.”

levels, and interest rates and credit conditions still loose, the report gave detailed attention to whether the financial system and bond markets posed any particular threat to the country’s eight-year economic expansion. The answer so far is no, said the Fed, noting that there is little evidence of a liquidity crunch in the corporate or other bond markets, and no evidence that rising asset values pose a problem. The structure of the corporate bond market is changing with new regulations, the Fed said, but by traditional measures shows only minimal strain in adapting.

“Vulnerabilities in the U.S. financial system remained, on balance, moderate,” concluded the report, submitted to Congress on behalf of the Fed’s Washington-based Board of Governors. “Valuation pressures across a range of assets and several indicators of investor risk appetite have increased further...However, these developments in asset mar-

kets have not been accompanied by increased leverage.”

The combination of rising asset values and rising leverage is considered particularly toxic, indicating that investments are being made with borrowed money and leaving investors unable to repay those debts if the value of the underlying assets decline. U.S. Treasury yields rose after the report, with the yield on the benchmark 10-year note near a more than eight-week high. U.S. stocks edged higher.

The release of the report on Friday comes ahead of Fed Chair Janet Yellen’s appearance next Wednesday and Thursday before the House and Senate committees that oversee the central bank and related issues.

The roughly 60-page document is largely a review of economic and policy developments since the last report, in February.

In this instance the document took on a steady-as-she-goes qual-

ity. Growth in the first quarter was slow at about 1-1/2 percent on an annualized basis, and inflation took a step backward. But consumer confidence remained strong, and “business investment has turned up....The housing market continues its gradual recovery. Economic growth has also been supported by recent strength in foreign activity.”

The government on Friday said nonfarm payrolls surged by 222,000 in June and workers put in more hours but average hourly earnings grew a modest 0.2 percent.

Along with the discussion of financial conditions, however, the Fed did highlight some long-term problems. The central bank noted that weak productivity growth may become entrenched as a “new normal,” and could be one reason wage growth remains weak. It also noted the continued gap in unemployment rates between whites and blacks and Hispanics.(rtr)

Unique, Magoak-goakan Tradition in Kintamani

Kintamani customary village held magoak-goakan tradition on Thursday (Mar. 23).

The tradition was attended by approximately 4,000 people ranging from children, adolescents, adults to the elderly.

The tradition was organized in a series of Nyepi Desa at the local customary village. From the morning, thousands of people putting on middle traditional attires have thronged the village square or sacred land to implement magoakgoakan tradition.

Not infrequently, the participants should turn upside down due to the sloping arena. In addition, a number of participants, especially women, were crushed by the other participants. Nevertheless, it did not reduce the enthusiasm of residents to follow the tradition.

Amid the activities, chief of Kintamani customary village, Nyoman Sukadia, said that magoak-goakan tradition has been started at 8:00 until midnight. This activity is routinely held every year considering this tradition is the legacy of ancestors that must continue to be preserved.

“The magoak-goakan tradition has something to do with religious ceremonies of Nyepi Desa of Kintamani village. This event has been organized since the full moon of Balinese ninth month (Mar. 12)

and the ceremony ended at 00:00 on Wednesday,” he said.

Sukadia explained that the magoak-goakan tradition aims to more establish relationship among the residents of Kintamani customary village. Moreover, this tradition is intended for preservation of the natural environment and wildlife.

The ceremony takes place on the full moon of the Balinese ninth month and during which is also held Jagra and Miasa.

After Le Mayeur found ‘home’ in the island and Ni Pollok, who soon became the muse of his paintings and the rest of his life, the artist created a range of artworks in his impressionistic ‘dob’ style of painting. Le Mayeur utilized thick and rather stiff brushes to create sharp yet fluent caresses, which were later elaborated on by Antonio Blanco, another influential painter in Bali.

Le Mayeur passed away on May 31, 1958. The loving couple left no children but the well-crafted mansion that is the museum today, and its legacy was bequeathed to the Indonesian government. The museum exemplifies the priceless heritage of an artist and a nation.

The main building features the former living quarters of the couple, with classical Balinese elements, sculpted stone walls and red terrazzo floor tiles.

Carved wood dominates the furnishings, and window sills feature motifs inspired by wayang shadow puppet characters. There are five rooms that serve as silent witnesses to the lives of Le Mayeur and Ni Pollok. Visitors may imagine the similar love story brought again to life through inanimate objects, similar to the retro-styled storytelling of the film Titanic. Walkthroughs include the artist’s studio, reading room and study, and the bedroom as well as Ni Pollok’s vanity corner and bathroom.

Buoyed by Lopez release, Venezuela opposition rallies for 100th day

Residents of West Tegalbadeng protest chicken coop

NEGARA — Dozens of residents of Anyar hamlet, West Tegalbadeng, Negara, protested the existence of chicken coops having the impact on fly invasion. The three adjacent chicken coops located close to one another are not far from people’s settlement and have been operating for years. Lately, the fly invasion adequately disturbs the residents up to a radius of one kilometer from the chicken coops. Residents have also sent their objection to the local village authority last April and the owner has made a statement. However, within the past week the fly emerged again.

A number of residents met on Sunday (Jul. 9) hoped that such condition could be addressed immediately by village authority.

Moreover, from the information, the chicken farm business has not owned any permit yet. “Almost every day, even it (the invasion of flies) lasts until night,” said Komang Suara, one of the local residents.

According to residents, peak of the fly invasion occurred on Wednesday (Jul. 5) and on the piodalan or temple festival at subgroup meeting hall. At that time, residents gathered and found the fly invasion. Moreover, the residents living in a distance of one kilometer also feel the impact. Indeed, dozens of residents have expressed their protest, including the collection of a signature to village authority.

Japan PM Abe to reshuffle cabinet as support plunges to lowest since 2012

TOKYO - Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will reshuffle his cabinet and party leaders early next month, moving to shore up his worst levels of popular support since returning to power in 2012, following a historic loss in a Tokyo assembly election.

Last week’s loss, delivered by a novice political group, spotlights Abe’s potential vulnerability after nearly five years in power, with many blaming voter perceptions of arrogance on his part and that of his powerful Chief Cabinet Secretary, Yoshihide Suga.

Opinion polls on Monday showed Abe’s popularity at its lowest since he returned to power late in 2012, with support of 36 percent in one conducted by the conservative Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper - tumbling from 49 percent a month earlier.

Another, in the liberal Asahi, found support of 33 percent, a slide from 38 percent from a week earlier, with 60 percent of independent voters not supporting Abe’s cabinet - numbers Suga said the premier was aware of.

“I believe he wants to sincerely accept this as the voice of the people,”

Suga told a news conference, adding that the administration needed to “be even more earnest” about tasks such as rebuilding the economy.

Abe, in Europe for a summit of leaders of the G20 grouping of ations, told traveling media he would retain core officials in the reshuffle of the cabinet and ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) officials planned for August.

“I will reshuffle the LDP leadership and the Cabinet members early next month, aiming to renew peoples’ feelings,” Jiji news agency quoted Abe as saying in Stockholm.

“Stability is extremely important to deliver results. The core structure of the Cabinet should not be changed so often.”

Japanese media said the remarks mean he will retain Deputy Prime Minister Taro Aso, who also serves as finance minister, along

with Suga and LDP number two Toshihiro Nikai, while ditching gaffe-prone Defence Minister Tomomi Inada.

He also said he would skip a planned visit to Estonia and would arrive back in Japan a day early to visit the flood-devastated southwest.

Reshuffling the cabinet is a step often taken by beleagured leaders to repair popularity, but Suga denied that was the case.

“The prime minister is himself selecting the best person for each job in order to achieve what we have to do,” he said.

Exactly a year ago, Abe’s ruling bloc stormed to a landslide victory in an election for parliament’s upper house, despite concerns over his economic policies and plans to revise the nation’s postwar constitution.

His administration has since been battered by a scandal over suspicions of favoritism to a friend’s business, verbal gaffes by cabinet ministers and concerns about Abe’s intentions to revise the constitution. (rtr)

CARACAS - Galvanized by the release from jail of hardline leader Leopoldo Lopez, Venezuelan opposition supporters on Sunday marked 100 days of protests against a socialist government they blame for political repression and economic misery.

Thousands of people gathered in an east Caracas square to hear opposition figures including the wife of Lopez, Lilian Tintori, speak.

Many protests have ended in clashes between masked youths and security forces, with more than 90 killed, hundreds arrested and thousands injured since the unrest began at the start of April.

“We’re not giving up. That Leopoldo is home fills us with the strength to keep fighting,” said Maria Garcia, a 54-year-old homemaker clad in a white T-shirt

bearing his image, as she gathered with friends at the rally.

While Lopez was at home with his two young children, Tintori, who has campaigned for him around the world including during a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump in the Oval Office, said she was relieved to have her husband home but the fight was not over.

“I can’t say I’m happy when we know our country is suffering, when there are children eating out of the trash, when there is no medicine in Venezuela,” she said, surrounded by opposition legislators.

Cardinal Pell arrives in Australia to face sexual offence charges

SYDNEY - A top Vatican official charged in his native Australia with historical sex crimes arrived in Sydney on Monday ahead of his first court appearance later this month.

Australia’s Nine Entertainment Co Ltd broadcast video of Cardinal George Pell being whisked away from Sydney airport early on Monday morning.

Australian police said late last month Pell, an adviser to Pope Francis, faced multiple charges of “historical sexual offences” from multiple complainants. That makes the Vatican economy minister the highest-ranking Church official to face such accusations.

Pell has declared his innocence and said he would return to Australia to clear his name.

The Sydney Catholic archdiocese said on Monday Pell’s return “should not be a surprise” because he had already said he would return to defend himself against the charges.

It said in a statement Pell “consulted his doctors and on their advice took several days to return home, breaking his journey in a number of places to avoid longhaul flights”.

Pell had said he was too sick to fly home to testify at a government inquiry into child abuse in 2016.

China tests self-sustaining space station in Beijing

There are about 500 cars parked every day in the road border of Jalan Hanoman and around Jalan Monkey Forest.

BEIJING - Sealed behind the steel doors of two bunkers in a Beijing suburb, university students are trying to find out how it feels to live in a space station on another planet, recycling everything from plant cuttings to urine.

They are part of a project aimed at creating a self-sustaining ecosystem that provides everything humans need to survive.

Four students from Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics entered the Lunar Palace-1 on Sunday with the aim of living self-sufficiently for 200 days.

They say they are happy to act as human guinea-pigs if it means getting closer to their dream of becoming astronauts.

“I’ll get so much out of this,” Liu Guanghui, a PhD student, who entered the bunker on Sunday, said. “It’s truly a different life experience.”

President Xi Jinping wants China to become a global power in space exploration, with plans to send the first probe to the dark

side of the moon by 2018 and to put astronauts on the moon by 2036. The Lunar Palace 365 experiment may allow them to stay there for extended periods.

For Liu Hong, a professor at Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics and the project’s principal architect, said everything needed for human survival had been carefully calculated.

“We’ve designed it so the oxygen (produced by plants at the station) is exactly enough to satisfy the humans, the animals, and the organisms that break down the waste materials,” she said.

But satisfying physical needs is only one part of the experiment, Liu said. Charting the mental impact of confinement in a small space for such a long time is equally crucial.

“They can become a bit de-

pressed,” Liu said. “If you spend a long time in this type of environment it can create some psychological problems.”

Liu Hui, a student leader who participated an initial 60-day experiment at Lunar Palace-1 that finished on Sunday, said that she sometimes “felt a bit low” after a day’s work.

The project’s support team has found mapping out a specific set of daily tasks for the students is one way that helps them to remain happy.

But the 200-day group will also be tested to see how they react to living a for period of time without sunlight. The project’s team declined to elaborate.

“We did this experiment with animals... so we want to see how much impact it will have on people,” Liu, the professor, said. (rtr)

Driving under the influence in car powered by whisky biofuel LONDON - Alcohol and automobiles famously do not mix - but one Scottish scientist has disproved that maxim by driving a car powered by biofuel derived from making whisky.

Edinburgh-based Celtic Renewables has developed a process to manufacture the biofuel biobutanol from draff and pot ale - barley kernels and a yeasty liquid that are produced when whisky is made and then usually thrown away.

Martin Tangney, the president of Celtic Renewables and director of Edinburgh Napier University’s Biofuel Research Centre, said that a desire to effectively manage resources had inspired him to pursue the project.

GIANYAR — Capacity of Monkey Forest central parking, Ubud, accommodating approximately 1,000 cars, is expected to attract around 500 cars all this time parked in a number of road sections in Ubud. Previously, it could accommodate up to 200 more cars,” he said.

He added that if all the vehicles have been cleaned from the road sections, he also expected the government to be willing to allocate funds to make pedestrian in a number of road sections in Ubud. “So, the road sections all this time functioned as parking space will be transformed into a pedestrian. Thus, tourists will be more comfortable to have a promenade in Ubud,” he said.

When asked about the levies withdrawn from the central parking area, Gandra said it remains to be coordinated with the Gianyar transportation agency. Though there is no certainty he asserted to use parking mechanism as applied in the Ngurah Rai Airport. “Later on, we must refer to the rules made by local government.

As planned, we will apply the system resembling to the one applied in the airport so that it will run effectively,” he explained.

Police arrest effigy thief at eight temples

AMLAPURA — Theft of pratima or sanctified effigy is rampant again in Karangasem. After the incident at Dalem Temple of Nongan early this year and several other temples in Karangasem, this time similar incident occurred again at Bukit village, Karangasem, last Saturday (Jul. 8). However, this time police could immediately reveal the identity of the thief and arrested him at his home, not far from the location of the effigy theft. The act of perpetrator is quite disturbing because he has broken in eight temples at the village.

Chief of Karangasem Police, Gede Ardana, said on Sunday (Jul. 9) the perpetrator is I Wayan Juli Anggara Tama alias Pentong, 21.

The Hindu perpetrator from Bukit Kaler hamlet, Bukit, was originally known to have stolen effigies in several crime scenes, such as Mas Manik Temple at Kebon Bukit hamlet and Alit Pasek clan temple at Bukit Kaler hamlet. However, after developed, there were a total of eight temples broken in by Pentong. Other than both temples, six other temples are the Dadia Kelod clan temple at Bukit Kelod Temple, Dalem Temple of Bukit customary village, Mas Bingin Sari Temple at Bukit Kelod hamlet, Manuaba Temple at Bukit Kelod hamlet, Pasek clan temple at Bukit Kelod hamlet and Bale Agung Temple at Bukit Kelod.

Before arresting the perpetrator, police through operations unit received a report from local residents that there had been an effigy burglary from a storage box at Mas Bingin Sari Temple at Bukit Kelod hamlet around 16:30. After that, the operations unit headed by chief unit 1 and identification team of the criminal investigation carried out crime scene examination and identified missing items. In addition, police already interrogated some witnesses.

Furthermore, after getting some clues, police carried out more intensive investigations and obtained data that some other temples at Bukit village also suffered losses in the form of effigies. Armed with testimonies from witnesses, the team got information that there is a resident used to behave negatively. Police immediately suspected the person and conducted a search for the person.

Around 21:00, police managed to find the suspect Wjat. When interrogating the perpetrator, he initially gave crinkled information.

However, he could no longer dodge after all the testimonies of witnesses and evidences entirely pointed to him. Finally, he confessed his deeds that have stolen effigies at a number of temples at Bukit village.

“From the hands of the perpetrator, we secure some evidences. Now, we are still developing the case whether similar cases also occurred in other regions,” he said.

From the perpetrator’s hands, police secured some evidences, such as a triangular black gemstone, five pieces of perforated coins, ten old coins, and a tin of Sampoerna cigarette, a black purse and a box. Currently, police are still investigating the case by identifying evidences and examining further witnesses. (kmb31)

Toekad Rafting still operates

Police prepare article 359 of Criminal Code GIANYAR —A day after the death incident of a tourist from China, Wang Yumei, in Ayung River, in fact it did not dampen tourist visits to Toekad Rafting. When asked about insurance for all visitors, he said that every guest taking the tour has been already covered with insurance. “Well, there is insurance where the premium has been included,” he explained.

Again, his side claimed that would not give any comments related to the death case of Wang Yumei when taking rafting adventure handled by

Toekad Rafting. Budi said that the management was in Denpasar and would be back in the afternoon. He suggested the media to come back in the afternoon if wishing to meet the management.

In the meantime, Chief of Payangan Police, Gde Endrawan, said the ranks of Gianyar Police Criminal Investigation Unit have already conducted an examination to the victim’s family on Sunday morning. “Victim’s family wants to go back to their country, but the process of investigation will continue. On Sunday morning, police have done the examination,” he said.

When asked about Toekad Rafting remaining to operate in the middle of high rainfall, Endrawan said that police can ensnare with Article 359 of the Criminal Code on negligence that resulted in one’s death. (kmb35)

LOS ANGELES - Spider-Man is officially a box office overachiever. As of Sunday morning, the latest cinematic depiction of the webbed-hero, “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” is looking at a $117 million opening from 4,348 locations. $10.6 million of the domestic total came from 392 Imax screens. That’s a huge win for Sony, Columbia Pictures, and Marvel Studios for the film, which cost roughly $175 million to produce. The anticipated opening weekend is higher than industry estimates, which were in the $90 million to $110 million range, while the studio cautiously pegged it at $80 million.

“Everyone at Sony and Marvel are thrilled,” said Josh Greenstein, Sony’s marketing chief. “It’s safe to say it’s a triumphant return for Spider-Man.” “Homecoming” banked on the idea that the summer box office was craving a family-friendly superhero movie -- Tom Holland plays a high school version of Peter Parker who, at 15 years old, has to prove that he is worthy of being called an Avenger. And it seems that bet is paying off. The $117 million figure is the second largest in Sony Pictures history, behind “Spider-Man 3.”

Much attention has been paid to the flick’s successful marketing campaign, which heavily featured Iron Man (Robert Downy Jr.), who serves as Spider-Man’s mentor in the film. Michael Keaton plays the big bad, Vulture, Jon Favreau plays Spidey’s guardian, Happy Hogan, and Zendaya stars as Michelle Jones (“MJ”), Parker’s brainy classmate.

The movie consistently dominated social media in the weeks leading up to its release.

Before “Homecoming,” Jon Watts directed two much lowerbudget feature films -- the 2014 horror movie “Clown” and 2015’s “Cop Car” starring Kevin Bacon. He also has a handful of writing and producing credits, and is one of six writers credited on the “Homecoming” script. Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal share production credit. While the former has proven essentially infallible in the biz, “Homecoming”

serves as a redemption narrative for the latter. After the infamous 2014 Sony hack, Pascal was ousted from her post at the top of the studio, and began to focus on producing. This is her second major release following last summer’s “Ghostbusters” reboot, but she also has a hand in a long list of upcoming projects including Sony’s “Barbie” movie, Steven Spielberg’s A-list-studded “The Papers,” and future “SpiderMan” movies. “We have incredible partners,” said Greenstein, who said that those relationships helped the film to be “embraced in a big way.

It really shows the strength for this beloved character.”

Despite the reliability of superhero movies at the box office, “Homecoming” could have been seen as a big bet for all parties involved. For one, it’s the third iteration of the character in the past 15 years -- before Holland, Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire donned the Spidey suit. The makers had to trust that audiences would be ready to see the character yet again. On top of that, the summer box office has not been particularly kind to the sequels and reboots that have become the industry’s summer signature. As audience fatigue has impacted previously reliable franchises like “Transformers” and even “Despicable Me,” the one thing that this summer has proved is that the domestic audience is not yet burnt out on superheroes.

Starting with “Despicable Me 3,” which is headed for a $34 million second frame, or a 53% drop from last weekend. “Baby Driver” should sit comfortable in third, as positive word of a mouth is steering to a $12.8 million second weekend, or a 38% drop. “Wonder Woman” continues to hold on with $10.1 million in its sixth weekend, and

“Transformers: The Last Knight” should round out the top five with $6.3 million.

Kumail Nanjiani’s “The Big Sick” is entering the top ten as it expands toward wide release, starting next Friday. From 326 North American theaters this weekend the movie should make $3.7 million.

Sofia Coppola’s “The Beguiled” should stay in the top ten as it, too, expands. This weekend it’s expected to make $2.1 million from 941 locations. Meanwhile, A24’s “A Ghost Story” starring Rooney Mara and Casey Affleck should spook $105,000 from four locations during its opening frame.

Overall, the summer box office stands at about $2.3 billion, or 8% lower than last year. That leaves the

year overall about dead even with 2016 after movies like “Beauty and the Beast,” “Logan,” “Get Out” and “The Fate of the Furious” laid a strong foundation for the summer during the early part of the calendar year.

“Despite the strength of ‘SpiderMan: Homecoming,’ yet another ‘down’ weekend puts us dead even with last year’s box office pace as we remain down 8% for the summer,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at ComScore.

“The silver lining is the expected continued strength of Spidey, plus ‘War For The Planet of The Apes,’ ‘Dunkirk,’ and ‘Atomic Blonde’ all in rapid succession that could fuel a much-needed late summer renaissance at the multiplex.”(rtr)

Germans angry over ‘orgy of violence’ at Merkel’s pre-election G20

BERLIN - Germans expressed anger on Sunday over violence that hit a G20 world leaders’ summit in Hamburg, raising awkward questions for Chancellor Angela Merkel less than three months before an election. About 20,000 police struggled to contain several hundred anti-capitalist militants who torched cars, looted shops and hurled Molotov cocktails and stones during the July 7-8 summit. Tens of thousands more people demonstrated peacefully.

Overall, 476 officers suffered injuries ranging from cuts and firework burns to eye damage from laser pointers. Police said on Sunday they had arrested 186 people and took 225 into custody. International media have focused more on U.S. President Donald Trump’s first meeting with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin at the summit, as well as Trump’s diverging views on climate change and trade from those of the other leaders.

Nevertheless, an Emnid poll showed that a majority of Germans, 59 percent, believed the riots damage the image of their country - even though violence has affected a number of international meetings around

the world over the years. Merkel was forced to defend her choice of Hamburg, saying other cities, like London, had hosted similar meetings. Hamburg, a seaport which is Germany’s second biggest city, has a strong radical leftist tradition. It was also home to an al Qaeda cell that carried out the 9/11 attacks on U.S. targets in 2001.

Merkel had wanted to demonstrate to G20 partners, including Putin and Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, her commitment to freedom of speech and rejected the notion that some cities were out of bounds as summit venues.

The strategy has backfired, said some commentators. “I can barely

breathe with anger because Chancellor Merkel and Hamburg mayor (Olaf) Scholz trivialise the brutal riots as ‘not acceptable’,” wrote a commentator in Bild am Sonntag.

The Social Democrats (SPD), trailing Merkel’s conservatives by 12-15 percentage points in polls, squarely blamed Merkel.
