Actress Felicity Huffman pleads guilty in college admissions scandal NEW YORK - Actress Felicity Huffman and a dozen other parents agreed on Monday to plead guilty to using bribery to get their children into prestigious universities. Huffman, 56, best known for her role in the “Desperate Housewives” series, agreed to plead guilty to paying $15,000 to help her eldest daughter get better scores on the SAT college entrance exam, the Massachusetts Department of Justice said in a statement. Huffman’s equally famous husband, actor William H. Macy of “Fargo” fame, was not charged in connection with the college admissions scandal. The Massachusetts Department of Justice said that in addition to Huffman, another dozen parents charged in the case had also agreed to plead guilty. Huffman could face a maximum of up to 20 years in prison for conspiracy to commit mail fraud but is not expected to receive such a stiff sentence. The Boston Globe said that as
part of a plea agreement, Huffman’s sentencing guidelines would be between four to 10 months in prison and prosecutors would recommend she serve the “low end” of that scale. The newspaper also published a statement from Huffman in which she apologized for her actions. “I am ashamed of the pain I have caused my daughter, my family, my friends, my colleagues and the educational community,” she said. “I want to apologize to them and, especially, I want to apologize to the students who work hard every day to get into college, and to their parents who make tremendous sacrifices to support their children and do so honestly. “My daughter knew absolutely nothing about my actions, and in my misguided and profoundly wrong way, I have betrayed her,” Huffman said. “My desire to help my daughter is no excuse to break the law or engage in dishonesty.” (afp)

Mack, 36, was arrested a year ago on sex trafficking charges for getting the women to join Nxivm, a purported executive coaching organization that forced them to have intercourse with 58-year-old leader Keith Raniere. Mack, best known for her role as Clark Kent’s friend in superhero television series “Smallville,” was one of six defendants in a federal indictment filed against members
of Nxivm, based near Albany in upstate New York. She admitted racketeering and racketeering conspiracy, and could face up to 40 years in prison when she is sentenced on September 11. Before being accepted as “slaves,” women had to provide compromising photos and other personal effects, which the organization threatened to make public if
they tried to leave. They also had their skin branded with Raniere’s initials as other members held them still and filmed. Another of the high-profile defendants in the case is Clare Bronfman, heiress to the Canadian Seagram liquor empire. She and a sister are believed to have given more than $100 million to the group. Indonesians wrestle with voting choices and giant ballots
JAKARTA - When Indonesians vote in presidential and legislative elections next week, they’ll be wrestling with choices affecting their country’s future, and ballots as big as posters.
former special forces Gen. Prabowo Subianto, though many voters remain undecided.
The super-sized documents, some too big to fit unfolded inside the voting booths, are causing complaints as well as worries that elderly voters will struggle with them. The ballot for the Senate covered more than half the body of a woman who held it up at a polling simulation exercise held by the election commission on Wednesday. “This certainly makes it difficult for people to vote,” said Jakarta resident Siti Nuria. “Why can’t this vote be made simpler? It will be very troublesome for the elderly to vote and in folding them back up,” she said. Despite the big size, others
Overseas Some 16,045 members of the Indonesian diaspora will be able to exercise their franchise on Saturday, Apr 13, for the presidential and legislative elections in Germany followed by vote counting on Apr 17. Three overseas polling stations in Berlin, Frankfurt, and Hamburg will be readied for those set to exercise their democratic right. In the meantime, voters residing far from the polling stations may also mail their ballots to the Overseas Election Committee in the three cities. Prior to the elections, some groups had held campaigning for
complained the writing was still too small. “We hope that in the future it can be simpler, with paper sizes that are not too large and names that are printed with larger font sizes,” said Susanti Sidiq. Indonesia, the world’s thirdbiggest democracy after India and the U.S. and a stronghold of democracy in a neighborhood of authoritarian nations, holds elections for president, Senate, and national, provincial and district legislatures on April 17. About 190 million people are eligible to vote. Polls say President Joko Widodo has a big lead over his challenger,
the duo presidential candidates -incumbent President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) and challenger Prabowo Subianto -- in Berlin, Germany’s largest city. While campaigning in Berlin on Sunday (Apr 7), the incumbent’s supporters, called Gerakan Wadyabala Jokowi (GWJ), had appealed to members of the Indonesian diaspora in Germany to cast their vote for Jokowi and his running mate Ma’ruf Amin during the presidential election. The group’s chairman, Andi Tinellung, in Berlin on Monday, made an appeal to eligible voters in Germany to exercise their right to vote. The opposition’s supporter group had also conducted campaigning for Prabowo and his run-
ning mate Sandiaga Uno in Berlin on Mar 30, in which 300 members of the Indonesian diaspora from Germany, the United Kingdom, and Austria attended. The General Elections Committee (KPU) has given confirmation that 192,828,520 people in total are eligible to cast their ballot for the elections on Apr 17. On the other hand, some 2,058,191 voters will cast their ballots overseas on Apr 8-14. (ap/ant) News can also be heard in “Bali Image” at Global Radio FM 96.5 from 9.30 until 10.00 am.
