“Harry Potter” triumphs with magical sweep at Olivier Awards
LONDON - “Harry Potter And The Cursed Child”, a stage adaptation of J.K Rowling’s fantastical world of witches and wizards, cast a magical spell at the Olivier Awards on Sunday, scooping nine wins at Britain’s big night for theatre. The critically-acclaimed production, which opened last year in London’s West End, went in with 11 nominations. Its victorious haul made it “the most decorated production in the ceremony’s history”, awards organisers said. The eighth story in the “Harry Potter” series, the play follows Rowling’s young boy wizard and friends Ron and Hermione into adulthood. It took best new play, best actor, best actor and actress in a supporting role as well as best director. “The power of imagination is infinite,” director John Tiffany said in his acceptance speech. “We need it now more than ever.” Jamie Parker, who portrays the older Harry, won best actor, beating off competition from the likes of Ian McKellen and Ed Harris. Anthony Boyle, who plays Scorpius Malfoy, took best actor in a supporting role while best actress in a supporting role went to Noma Dumezweni, who plays an adult Hermione. “Thank you J.K. Rowling for
creating Hermione and...the privilege of being able to play Hermione is overwhelming and humbling,” Dumezweni said. The play also won best lighting design, best sound design, best costume design and best set design. Other winners at the glitzy ceremony at London’s Royal Albert Hall included children playing instruments in “School of Rock”, composer Andrew Lloyd Webber’s adaptation of the 2003 comedy film, who won in the outstanding achievement in music category. “Groundhog Day”, an adaptation of the famed 1993 film starring Bill Murray, won best new musical as well as best actor in a musical for Andy Karl. “Glee” actress Amber Riley scooped the best actress in a musical award for “Dreamgirls” while fellow cast member Adam J Bernard won best actor in a supporting role in a musical. Billie Piper won best actress for “Yerma”, an adaptation of the play by Federico Garcia Lorca, which won best revival. “Jesus Christ Superstar” won best musical revival. “Our ladies of Perpetual Succour” won best new comedy while “Akhnaten” took the prize for best new opera production. Families gather after Egypt church attack, state of emergency approved
ALEXANDRIA - Families of victims of Sunday’s bombing at Alexandria’s Coptic cathedral gathered at the Monastery of Saint Mina under heavy security on Monday as Egypt’s cabinet approved a three-month state of emergency ahead of a scheduled trip by Pope Francis. Coffins of the 17 killed were lined up on the tiled square outside the monastery ahead of the funeral. Police checked cars as they entered the grounds, with hundreds of people gathered outside, and dozens of tanks lined parts of the road from Cairo. The blast in Egypt’s second largest city came hours after a bomb struck a Coptic church in Tanta, a nearby city in the Nile Delta, killing 27 and wounding nearly 80. Both attacks were claimed by the Islamic State, which has waged a campaign against Egypt’s Christian minority, the largest in the Middle East. The Copts, whose presence in Egypt dates to the Roman era, have long complained of religious persecution and accused the state of not doing enough to protect them. Coming on Palm Sunday, when Christians mark the arrival of Jesus in Jerusalem, the bombings appeared designed to spread fear among Copts, who make up 10 percent of Egypt’s population. They also raised security

‘Boss Baby,’ ‘Beauty’ outshine ‘Smurfs 3’ at box office
LOS ANGELES — The Smurfs are feeling a little blue this weekend. The third installment in Sony’s animated series, “Smurfs: The Lost Village,” made its box-office debut in third place, with $14 million — far behind family-friendly holdovers “The Boss Baby” and “Beauty and the Beast,” according to studio estimates Sunday. Featuring the voices of Demi Lovato and Joe Manganiello, “Smurfs,” which reportedly cost $60 million to make, has not charmed critics either. Its earnings were worse than the 2013 opening of “Smurfs 2,” which went on to gross $347.5 million worldwide despite a $17.5 million debut and a heftier $105 million price tag. But the fate of the third “Smurfs” is not necessarily sealed, says ComScore’s senior media analyst, Paul Dergarabedian. “There are other revenue streams for films like this,” Dergarabedian said, noting international profits and home video potential that could recoup production costs.
In first place, “The Boss Baby” added $26.3 million in its second weekend in theaters, bringing its North American total to $89.4 million. Sufficient buzz and the benefit of voice star Alec Baldwin’s popular portrayal of President Donald Trump on “Saturday Night Live” likely helped the film succeed, Dergarabedian said. Meanwhile, “Beauty and the Beast” earned $25 million to take second place at the box office. In four weeks, Disney’s live-action fairy tale has brought in $432.3 million domestically. While the family films dominated, moviegoers had other options on a relatively quiet weekend. The
tepidly reviewed buddy comedy “Going in Style,” starring Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine and Alan Arkin, opened in fourth place, with $12.5 million. The faith-based drama “The Case for Christ” also launched with $3.9 million from 1,174 theaters. In limited release, the Chris Evans drama “Gifted” took in $476,000 from 56 theaters, while the World War II drama “Their Finest” grossed $77,000 from four screens in New York and Los Angeles. The relative quiet at the box office is ending soon. “The Fate of the Furious,” the eighth installment in “The Fast and the Furious” franchise, speeds into theaters next weekend, followed by “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” a few weeks later. “There are a lot of box-office heavyweights looming on the horizon,” Dergarabedian said. fears ahead of a visit to Cairo by Roman Catholic Pope Francis planned for April 28-29. Coptic Pope Tawadros, who was leading the mass in Alexandria’s Saint Mark’s Cathedral when the bomb exploded, was not harmed, the Interior Ministry said. The nationwide state of emergency declared by President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and agreed by the cabinet on Monday is expected to be approved by parliament within seven days in order to remain in place. “The armed forces and police will do what is necessary to confront the threats of terrorism and its financing,” the cabinet said in a statement. Measures would be taken to “maintain security across the country, protect public and private property and the lives of citizens,” it said.

the lack of security, saying that despite warnings of an attack, police had not stepped up efforts to protect them. A senior police official told Reuters a bomb was discovered and disabled near the Tanta church about a week ago. “That should have been an alarm or a warning that this place is targeted,” said 38-year-old Amira Maher. “Especially Palm Sunday, a day when many people gather, more than any other time in the year... I don’t know how this happened.” At Tanta University hospital morgue, desperate families were trying to get inside to search for loved ones. Security forces held them back to stop overcrowding, enraging the crowd. “Why are you preventing us from entering now? Where were you when all this happened?” shouted one women looking for a relative. Some appeared in total shock, their faces pale and unmoving. Others wept openly as women wailed in mourning. Though Islamic State has long waged a low-level war against soldiers and police in Egypt’s Sinai peninsula for years, its stepped up assault on Christians in the mainland could turn a provincial insurgency into wider sectarian conflict. On Sunday, the group warned of more attacks and boasted it had killed 80 people in three church bombings since December. Continued to page 6
