PETERSBURG - As a largerthan-life celebrity, Hulk Hogan considered it entertainment when he embellished his sex life but the Gawker news website crossed a line by posting a video of him having sex with a friend’s wife, the former professional wrestler testified on Tuesday. Hogan is seeking $100 million in damages from Gawker in a case that weighs a celebrity’s right to privacy against freedom of the press. Hogan testified he still is suffering from the release of the one-minute, 41second edited sex clip in 2012. “Everything changed in my life from that point forward,” he said. The sexual encounter came five years before the video was posted and Hogan, one of the wrestling world’s lead figures in the 1980s and ‘90s, said it had been recorded at a personal low point as he went through a divorce. “I was moving forward and this tape really sabotaged me,” he said. Attorneys for Gawker, which could be financially ruined by a loss, claim that it was Hogan who made his sex life a public matter. On Tuesday they presented him with clips from interviews and excerpts from his reality TV show, for which he was filmed on a toilet, and comments he had made about the size of his penis. Hogan emphasized the difference between his private character and the bombastic persona he used professionally with “artistic liberty.”

IT may have been snubbed at the Oscars but the Force awakened on Tuesday for the current “Star Wars” blockbuster with the film gaining a leading 11 nominations for the upcoming MTV Movie Awards. Breakout British star Daisy Ridley, 23, led the way for “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” getting nods for best female performance, best hero and best fight in the Walt Disney movie that has taken more than $2 billion at the worldwide box office. John Boyega, 23, was nominated for best breakthrough and best action performance for his role as turncoat Stormtrooper Finn, and the movie will also compete for movie of the year and best cast ensemble at the fan-based awards show in April. “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” failed to win any of its five Oscar nominations in February - mostly for visual effects and editing - and failed to get a best picture nomination. The MTV Movie Awards however, are all about fans. “It’s about blockbuster movies that audiences line up to see; comedies, superheroes, science fiction, fantasy action,” the show’s executive producer, Casey Patterson, said in a statement. The MTV Movie Awards are known for their irreverent humor and categories like best kiss and best villain. GIANYAR - The increase in waste volume during a series of Nyepi, especially Pengerupukan falling on Tuesday (Mar. 8), was not so significant. However, the Gianyar Sanitation and Landscaping Agency (DKP) must work extra hard and make special arrangements for the cleanup and waste transportation. The Head of the DKP Gianyar, I Wayan Kujus Pawitra, said that daily average of waste transported reaches 1,500 cubic meters. Waste volume on Pengerupukan typically increases by about 10 percent. “It does not increase so high when compared to Galungan, for instance. But the difficulty is that the waste on Pengerupukan is scattered about. A lot of garbage is scattered on main roads and location of parading the ogoh-ogoh,” he said.

Bali reopens airport
KUTA - The airport authority at Ngurah Rai in Bali has restarted operations after being shut down for 24 hours on account of Nyepi Day being observed on Wednesday. “We have already begun operations at the airport at 6 a.m. local time,” Trikora Harjo, general manager of PT Angkasa Pura I of the Ngurah Rai International Airport, stated here on Thursday. Lion Air JT-035 bound for Soekarno Hatta Airport of Jakarta was the first flight to take off from the Ngurah Rai Airport. Additionally, the first international flight that took off from the airport was Jetstar Australia JQ-
117 bound for Perth. “The airport has operated as usual. We have also arranged the schedule as Nyepi is an annual event,” Harjo noted. Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. DENPASAR — Vehicle Registration Service Unit at the Directorate of Bali Police Traffic Affairs makes a breakthrough by giving rewards to vehicle owners that have diligently paid taxes. The reward is in the form of chocolates and flowers to taxpayers signing up with complete requirements and queuing orderly on Saturday (Mar. 5). “We do this activity in the context of the Great Sympathetic Operation 2016 at the main office of vehicle registration at Renon. We appreciate to compliant and orderly taxpayers,” said vehicle registration section head, Anne Parwisti, Sunday (Mar. 6). services and briefing on orderly traffic compliance to taxpayers. ANCHORAGE — Skygazers from around the U.S. caught a flight from Alaska to Hawaii for prime viewing of a total solar eclipse that unfolded over parts of Indonesia and the Indian and Pacific oceans. A dozen eclipse enthusiasts were among the 181 passengers on the plane Tuesday that departed Anchorage for Honolulu. The rare event occurs when the moon is close enough to Earth to completely block out the sun. Joe Rao, an associate astronomer at the American Museum of
Natural History’s Hayden Planetarium in New York, called Alaska Airlines last fall, explaining that the flight would be in the right place for the eclipse. The route was expected to encounter the darkest shadow of the moon as it passed over Earth. Problem was, the plane would
be passing by nearly a half-hour too soon. The airline rescheduled the flight to depart 25 minutes later, and it rendezvoused with the eclipse’s sweet spot nearly 700 miles north of Honolulu. After the schedule tweak, Rao and a dozen other astronomy aficionados booked seats for the big show at 36,000 feet. Rao, like other self-dubbed “eclipse geeks,” was thrilled about setting out to witness his 11th such spectacle.
“It is an experience,” he said of watching the sun turn into a giant black disk in the sky. “Every fiber of you gets involved in those few moments when the sun is totally eclipsed.” The eclipse was expected to last just under two minutes in that location. The last total solar eclipse was in March 2015, and the one before that was in 2012. Craig Small, a semiretired Hayden Planetarium astronomer, was viewing his 31st total eclipse.
To mark each viewing, he carried a special eclipse flag made in 1972. Also on board was Dan McGlaun, who brought 200 pairs of special filter glasses to distribute to other passengers. McGlaun, a project manager who runs eclipse2017.org, was excited about viewing his 12th total eclipse. “It’s going to be amazing. It always is,” he said before boarding. “It’s a universal reaction when you see an eclipse. You cheer, you scream, you cry.” (ap)
WHO advises pregnant women to avoid travel to Zika-affected areas
GENEVA - The World Health Organization (WHO) advised pregnant women on Tuesday not to travel to areas with ongoing outbreaks of Zika virus due to the potential risk of birth defects. Sexual transmission is “relatively common” and health services in Zika-affected areas should be ready for potential increases in cases of neurological syndromes such as microcephaly and congenital malformations, it said. “Pregnant women whose sexual partners live in or travel to areas with Zika virus outbreaks should ensure safe sexual practices or
abstain from sex for the duration of their pregnancy,” the WHO said in a statement, based on advice from its Emergency Committee of independent experts. Previously the U.N. agency had advised pregnant women to consider deferring non-essential travel to areas with ongoing transmission of the mosquito-borne virus, which is spreading through Latin America, including Olympics host Brazil. The link between Zika and microcephaly, where babies are born with small heads and developmental problems, as well as Guillain-Barre
syndrome, which can cause paralysis, has not been proven but studies point in that direction, it said. “Microcephaly is now only one of several documented birth abnormalities associated with Zika during pregnancy,” WHO directorgeneral Margaret Chan told a news conference. “Grave outcomes include fetal death, placental insufficiency, fetal growth retardation and injury to the central nervous system.” “It is important we recommend strong public health measures and not wait until we have definitive proof,” she said. Hotel & Restaurant Tax in Badung not managed maximally
DENPASAR - The government of Badung district is considered to have not maximally managed the hotel and restaurant tax (PHR) revenue in the region although the regionally generated revenue (PAD) of Badung is the largest among the districts and municipality. “In my opinion, Badung has not been optimal in exploring the potential owned. On that account, it is necessary to be improved. Badung can apply online hotel and restaurant tax payment to minimize leakage because it is often used by irresponsible individuals,” said the Governor of Bali, Made Mangku Pastika, when receiving the audience of the Regent of Badung, Nyoman Giri Prasta, at his office, Monday (Mar. 7). Pastika added that the funds owned by Badung can also be invested to increase revenue. For instance, it can be invested through equity participation in the BPD Bali and PT. Jamkrida, regional government-owned enterprises
(BUMD) or buy hotel assets that can be managed independently. “Allocating the funds owned for investment will be better. Thus, it will not be in vain when it is only used for the implementation of inventing programs that do not provide benefits to wider community,” he explained. The Regent of Badung, Nyoman Giri Prasta, expected there is synergy between the government of Bali and Badung district in developing Bali and Badung in particular. His government is currently conducting the phase of regional mid-term development plan (RPJMD), where each agency is required to explain in the form of presentations and audio-visual impressions. “Currently we are also trying to change the existing order. Parliament rejects sharing of land acquisition fund DENPASAR - Chairman of Commission III of the Bali House of Representatives, Nengah Tamba, rejected the request of fund sharing for land acquisition related to the construction of shortcuts on the MengwitaniSingaraja road section. Previously, Governor of Bali, Made Mangku Pastika, expressed that Bali provincial government will help the land acquisition, while the rest of the construction is financed by state budget. However, if sharing the fund like at the Titab Dam case, we will try to learn about the legal basis,” he said at the Bali Parliament Building, Monday (Mar. 7). Tamba added there are actually 10 shortcuts to be built on the Mengwitani-Singaraja section. Feasibility study was already made in 2015, and the detailed engineering design (DED) is being processed this year. However, of the ten shortcuts, only four points get priority. “Four priorities have something to do with the budget. If the ten shortcuts are worth IDR 2 trillion more, four shortcuts will only cost IDR 624 billion, excluding the land acquisition. We want they are entirely funded by state budget including the land acquisition,” he explained. According to Tamba, estimation of the land acquisition cost can only be determined after completion of the DED. As planned, it will be resumed with environmental impact analysis (Amdal) in 2017, land acquisition in 2018, and construction of the shortcut begins in 2019. However, his commission wanted the process can be shortened. “We want the Amdal process can be made faster, so that the land acquisition can also be done in 2017 and construction can begin in 2018 because it is very vital for community needs. They consist of Candi Kuning (KM 46 +450), Wanagiri 1 (KM 55 +250), Wanagiri 2 (KM 55 + 700), and Gitgit 2 (KM 59 +450). The entire shortcuts shorten travel time by up to half of normal time. At the Candi Kuning, for instance, without shortcut must be taken within 3 minutes because the length of the existing distance reaches 1,408 meters. “As planned, the length of Candi Kuning shortcut is 749 meters. Thus, the travel time only reaches 1.5 minutes,” he added. Governor of Bali, Made Mangku Pastika, hoped the shortcut construction can soon be realized. PORTRAIT of poverty still adorns the Bangli district. This time it occurs at Kayubihi village, Bangli, precisely in Jangkaan hamlet. Who are they and how does the condition of their life look like? Jangkaan hamlet, Kayubihi is not far from the center of Bangli. It will take around 15 minutes. The area is very rich in agricultural potential such as tangerine. Behind it, in fact there are still residents living in poverty. His name is I Nyoman Tunas. This father of two children have lived for nine years in a tiny building sizing 3x4 meter with roof tile and woven bamboo walls. the building is seen to have curved as if it would collapse soon and the floor made of soil looks wet indicating if there is incoming rainwater. “When it rains, the water will come into the house. So, the entire floor is wet,” she said. Image of poverty becomes more visible from the bamboo bed without decent mattress. To warm the body, this gray-haired widow only relies on her beloved blanket. “I cannot buy,” said Tresna. Although her body was not as strong as ever, in living her life, Tresna is forced to be a hoeing laborer other than making a sokasi. When getting lucky, she can earn about IDR 50,000 per day. However, when compared to the bitter life she suffered, of course the total income is not able to change everything. “It is only enough to eat. FUKUSHIMA - The robots sent in to find highly radioactive fuel at Fukushima’s nuclear reactors have “died”; a subterranean “ice wall” around the crippled plant meant to stop groundwater from becoming contaminated has yet to be finished. And authorities still don’t know how to dispose of highly radioactive water stored in an ever mounting number of tanks around the site. Five years ago, one of the worst earthquakes in history triggered a 10metre high tsunami that crashed into the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station causing multiple meltdowns. Nearly 19,000 people were killed or left missing and 160,000 lost their homes and livelihoods. Today, the radiation at the Fukushima plant is still so powerful it has proven impossible to get into its bowels to find and remove the extremely dangerous blobs of melted fuel rods. The plant’s operator, Tokyo Electric Power Co (Tepco) , has made some progress, such as removing hundreds of spent fuel roads in one damaged building. But the technology needed to establish the location of the melted fuel rods in the other three reactors at the plant has not
been developed. “It is extremely difficult to access the inside of the nuclear plant,” Naohiro Masuda, Tepco’s head of decommissioning said in an interview. “The biggest obstacle is the radiation.” The fuel rods melted through their containment vessels in the reactors, and no one knows exactly where they are now. This part of the plant is so dangerous to humans, Tepco has been developing robots, which can swim under water and negotiate obstacles in damaged tunnels and piping to search for the melted fuel rods. But as soon as they get close to the reactors, the radiation destroys their wiring and renders them useless, causing long delays, Masuda said. Each robot has to be custom-built
for each building.”It takes two years to develop a single-function robot,” Masuda said. IRRADIATED WATER Tepco, which was fiercely criticised for its handling of the disaster, says conditions at the Fukushima power station, site of the worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl in Ukraine 30 years ago, have improved dramatically. Radiation levels in many places at the site are now as low as those in Tokyo. More than 8,000 workers are at the plant at any one time, according to officials on a recent tour. Traffic is constant as they spread across the site, removing debris, building storage tanks, laying piping and preparing to dismantle parts of the plant. Much of the work involves pumping a steady torrent of water into the wrecked and highly radiated reactors to cool them down. DHAKA - A spelling mistake in an online bank transfer instruction helped prevent a nearly $1 billion heist last month involving the Bangladesh central bank and the New York Fed, banking officials said. Unknown hackers still managed to get away with about $80 million, one of the largest known bank thefts in history. The hackers breached Bangladesh Bank’s systems last month and stole its credentials for payment transfers, two senior Bangladesh Bank officials said. They then bombarded the Federal Reserve Bank of New York with nearly three dozen requests to move money from the Bangladesh bank’s account there to entities in the Philippines and Sri Lanka, the officials said. Four requests to transfer a total of about $81 million to the Philippines went through, but a fifth, for $20 million, to a Sri Lankan non-profit organisation got held up because the hackers misspelled the name of the NGO. The full name of the non-profit could not be learned. But one of the officials said the hackers misspelled “foundation” in the NGO’s name as “fandation”, prompting a routing bank, Deutsche Bank, to seek clarification from the Bangladesh central bank, which stopped the transaction. Deutsche Bank declined to comment. At the same time the unusually high number of payment instructions and the transfer requests to private entities - as opposed to other banks - made the Fed suspicious, which also alerted the Bangladeshis, the officials said. The details of how the hacking came to light and was stopped before it did more damage have not been previously reported. Bangladesh Bank has billions of dollars in a current account with the Fed, which it uses for international settlements. The transactions that got stopped totalled between $850 million and $870 million, one of the officials said. Last year, Russian computer security company Kaspersky Lab said a multinational gang of cyber criminals had stolen as much as $1 billion from as many as 100 financial institutions around the world in about two years. Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein’s son Qusay took $1 billion from Iraq’s central bank on the orders of his father on the day before coalition forces began bombing the country in 2003, American and Iraqi officials have said. More than a month after the attack, Bangladeshi officials are scrambling to trace the money, shore up security and identify weaknesses in their systems. They said there is little hope of ever catching the hackers, and it could take months before the money is recovered, if at all. That’s already prompted some sharp commentary from usually friendly countries in Asia, and expressions of contempt from Republican foreign policy hands who have vowed to oppose Trump. Presidential hopefuls of both parties typically talk tough on China because of America’s yawning trade deficit and the migration of U.S. manufacturing jobs to countries with cheaper labor. Mitt Romney, the Republican presidential nominee who lost the 2012 election, had vowed to declare China a currency manipulator on day one in office. Trump is making the same threat, but also proposing a 45 percent tariff on Chinese imports into the U.S. And as the business mogul vows to “Make America Great Again!” he’s poking a stick elsewhere in Asia. Tektekan of Kediri, from catastrophe repellent becomes a tradition
TABANAN - Pengerupukan activity ahead of Nyepi is synonymous with the parade of ogoh-ogoh or papier mâché demon. However, it is different for customary village in the region of Kediri, Tabanan. Although it has been agreed to negate the ogoh-ogoh parade, the village with the largest population in the subdistrict of Tabanan displays sacred art tradition named tektekan.
Originally, this tektekan art was only performed to repel catastrophe, but over time it becomes a tradition of customary villagers of Kediri. Tektekan is held again this year for two weeks by seven hamlets at Kediri village divided into two groups and it is held once in two days around the village starting from February 23 until March 8, 2016 (night of Pengerupukan). At the night of Pengerupukan, the seven hamlets displayed their skill in front of the Puseh temple. “It is held up to ahead of Nyepi starting at 20:00 until 23:00,” said a resident of Sema hamlet, Kediri, Ngurah Manik, 30, Monday (Mar. 7). The tektekan shown by each hamlet at Kediri village is not the same as in other areas designated for entertainment. This kind of tektekan may not be played carelessly, and can only be played at particular time. It is said that the tektekan is only played if the condition of local village is experiencing a catastrophe like famine or epidemic. That is why this tradition is highly anticipated by the outside community as entertainment, but very avoidable and undesirable by customary villagers of Kediri because it means a disaster is happening. Wayan Sudana, 34, a resident of Sema hamlet who is a maker and repairmen of okokan (large cowbell), said that ahead of Nyepi there will be many people at Kediri village repairing their okokan and some even purchase a new one. “On average, each family has two or a pair of okokan,” he explained.

Chief of Kediri customary village, A.A. Ngurah Panji, explained that the sacred tradition is intended as a conqueror of catastrophe and neutralizer of negative aura occurred at
the village, but it is not known for sure when the tradition first appeared. “This tradition is a heritage through generations functioned to repel catastrophe and diseases,” he said. Four years ago this tektekan attraction began to be presented regularly before Nyepi. One of the temple priests aged 90 years old told that he did not clearly know about it. However, until the age of 51 years, he had seen this tektekan tradition so many times. “No one knows for sure about the history of this tradition. According to our parents, this tradition has been inherited through generations. The emergence of tektekan is never predictable because it is usually preceded by
epidemic at the village,” he said. He recounted that initially the tektekan was only performed by children. However, when the players of tektekan trance, it will be taken over by adults, including the elderly, men and women. Initially, this tektekan used kulkul (split drum) made from bamboo and okokan tradition, a kind of traditional musical instrument and a cow necklace obtained by borrowing from outside the village. “In terms of tradition, the tektekan is played by using tools such as bamboo kulkul and okokan. NAYPYITAW - Myanmar’s National League for Democracy (NLD) has proposed a close friend of Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi as its presidential candidate, ending a four-month wait for the identity of the president expected to rule in her name. The NLD nominated Htin Kyaw, who joined the party just two months ago, as its lower house candidate. Thanks to the party’s crushing parliamentary majority, that makes him near-certain to become titular head of the country’s first democratically elected government since the army seized power in 1962. The wildly popular Suu Kyi and the NLD won a landslide electoral victory in November, but she is barred from holding the presidency herself under a junta-drafted 2008
constitution because her children are not Myanmar citizens. Suu Kyi has said that she would run the country regardless through a proxy. Until Thursday, she and the NLD leadership had kept the identity of their nominee a closely guarded secret even from rank-andfile MPs. N. Korea fires missiles, liquidates Seoul’s assets
SEOUL - North Korea fired two short-range ballistic missiles into the sea on Thursday in defiance of a U.N. Security Council resolution, as South Korean and U.S. forces conducted massive war games. The North also announced on Thursday it has scrapped all agreements with the South on commercial exchange projects and would “liquidate” South Korean assets left behind in its territory. North Korea has a large stockpile of short-range missiles and is developing long-range and intercontinental missiles as well. The missiles fired on Thursday flew about 500 km (300 miles) off its east coast city of Wonsan and were likely from the Soviet-developed Scud series, South Korea’s defence ministry said. Japan, which is within range of the longer-range variant of Scud missiles or the upgraded Rodong missiles, lodged a protest through the North Korean embassy in Beijing, Japan’s Kyodo news agency reported. North Korea often fires shortrange missiles when tensions rise on the Korean peninsula. Pyongyang gets particularly upset about the annual U.S.-South Korea drills, which its says are preparations for an invasion. The U.S. and South Korea remain technically at war with the North because the 1950-53 Korean War ended in an armed truce instead of a peace agreement. Around 17,000 U.S. military per-

MADIUN - The local immigration authorities have detained a Sri Lankan national for overstaying his permit in Indonesia. The 33-year old Sri Lankan national, identified as Amila Srinath Jayathilaka (33), is being held in custody at the Madiun penitentiary for further investigation, Head of the Madiun City Immigration Office Sigit Roesdianto said here on Wednesday. The immigration authorities arrested him after receiving a report that a foreign national had over-
stayed his permit, he said. Amila Srinath had been staying in neighboring Magetan district where he worked as a manager of a garment factory, PT Bintang Inti Karya, for the past one month. According to his permit of stay, the Sri Lankan national should have worked for PT Bintang Abadi Persada in Karanganyar district, Central Java. The 28-year old Russian, a five-time grand slam champion and the highest paid woman in sports, will be provisionally suspended starting March 12, the International Tennis Federation (ITF) said. For the health conditions Sharapova says she has, however, doctors say the scientific evidence for Mildronate is limited compared with many medicines widely available in Europe and the United States, where Sharapova trains, which have full regulatory backing and years of robust safety and

Meldonium is cheap and available over the counter without a prescription in some eastern European countries, where it is marketed as Mildronate by the Latvian pharmaceutical firm Grindeks. KINGSTON - Six-times Olympic gold medallist Usain Bolt on Wednesday helped announce the inaugural Racers Grand Prix in Kingston set for June 11 and hinted he might produce a special performance on Jamaica soil. Bolt, the Jamaican world record holder in the 100 and 200 metres, will headline a strong field in the Rio Olympics run-up event that includes world 400m champion Wayde van Niekirk of South Africa and American 100m bronze medallist Tori Bowie. “The fact that I’ll be competing this year it’s a motivation to work even harder to make sure when I compete here, I will be in top form to run fast times to show the country that I’m ready to go to Rio (Olympics) and do great things,” Bolt told Reuters.
Bolt said it was a well-positioned meet for most athletes because it is just before Olympic trials so they can go out and compete and know what they need to work on. Glen Mills, chairman of the organizing committee of the meet and the coach of Bolt and others at the Racers Track Club, said former world record holder Asafa Powell and 2012 Olympic sprint medallists Yohan Blake and Warren Weir were among other athletes expected to compete. Mills said he hoped the event would grow into a circuit of eight or 10 meets in the North American Central American and Caribbean Athletics Association (NACAC) and had the support of NACAC president Victor Lopez. Florida soccer consultant pleads guilty in FIFA probe
NEW YORK - A Florida-based sports marketing consultant from Colombia pleaded guilty in a U.S. court on Tuesday as part of an investigation of corruption in world soccer’s governing body FIFA, saying he had schemed to bribe various officials in the sport. Miguel Trujillo pleaded guilty in federal court in Brooklyn to four counts including that he engaged in conspiracies to commit money laundering and wire fraud. “I know that what I was doing was wrong,” Trujillo said. Under a plea deal, Trujillo, who
also admitted to filing a false tax return, agreed to forfeit $495,000. He was released on a $1.5 million bond. Trujillo, 65, is among 42 individuals and entities charged as part of a U.S. investigation into more than $200 million in bribes and kickbacks sought by soccer officials for marketing and broadcast rights to tournaments and matches. The investigation has sent Switzerland-based FIFA and other governing bodies into an unprecedented crisis. Gianni Infantino, FIFA’s newly elected president, has

Trujillo entered his plea shortly before Rafael Esquivel, another defendant, pleaded not guilty to charges related to his receiving bribes connected with the sale of tournament marketing rights. BARCELONA — Europe’s biggest stadium will be even bigger within five years, when the Camp Nou will hold more than 100,000 people under a new roof that will cover all seating sections. A joint bid by Japanese company Nikken Sekkei and a Catalan studio headed by architects Joan Pascual and Ramon Ausio won the tender to remodel the home of Barcelona, and the project will be presented publicly in a few weeks. Seating will increase from 99,354 to 105,000. Work is scheduled to start in the 2017-18 season, and will not keep the club from hosting games. The majority of fans are exposed to rain, sun, and wind, but in the updated stadium, “all seats will be
covered and protected from adverse weather,” Barcelona said, adding that all seats will be replaced and spacing between them will be improved. The top tier capacity will be increased, and it will have an even height throughout the stadium. One side is currently higher than the others. The winning proposal stood out “for being open, elegant, serene, timeless Mediterranean and democratic,” and represented a “silent and powerful tribute to the stadium built by Francesc Mitjans in 1957,” Barcelona said on Wednesday. The area underneath the grandstands will be open and visible from the outside. The current
facade walls will be removed. “It is a unique solution, reproducing the characteristic vision of the grandstand and canopy, from the inside out,” Barcelona said. New giant video screens will also be installed. The club said Nikken Sekkei was responsible for the design of the Saitama Super Arena, the Big Swan Stadium in Niigata, and the Tokyo Dome, all in Japan. Florida soccer consultant pleads guilty in FIFA probe
NEW YORK - A Florida-based sports marketing consultant from Colombia pleaded guilty in a U.S. court on Tuesday as part of an investigation of corruption in world soccer’s governing body FIFA, saying he had schemed to bribe various officials in the sport. Miguel Trujillo pleaded guilty in federal court in Brooklyn to four counts including that he engaged in conspiracies to commit money laundering and wire fraud. “I know that what I was doing was wrong,” Trujillo said. Under a plea deal, Trujillo, who
also admitted to filing a false tax return, agreed to forfeit $495,000. He was released on a $1.5 million bond. Trujillo, 65, is among 42 individuals and entities charged as part of a U.S. investigation into more than $200 million in bribes and kickbacks sought by soccer officials for marketing and broadcast rights to tournaments and matches. The investigation has sent Switzerland-based FIFA and other governing bodies into an unprecedented crisis. Gianni Infantino, FIFA’s newly elected president, has
vowed to lead the organization out of years of scandal. Trujillo entered his plea shortly before Rafael Esquivel, another defendant, pleaded not guilty to charges related to his receiving bribes connected with the sale of tournament marketing rights. Esquivel, a former Venezuelan national soccer federation president and executive committee member of the South American soccer confederation CONMEBOL, was arrested in Zurich in May with six other soccer officials. He was extradited on Monday.
Trujillo, a Colombian national living in Florida, had been an executive at Inter/ForeverSports Inc, a Miami-based sports marketing firm that later became Traffic Sports USA, the U.S. unit of Brazil’s Traffic Group. Since 2006, he was a self-employed consultant and was licensed by FIFA to act as a match agent for soccer federations and negotiate friendly matches. As a contractor, he organized international games for the Honduras national soccer team. In court, Trujillo said from 2008 to 2015, he worked with executives
from sports marketing firm Media World to pay bribes to soccer officials in Central America and the Caribbean for media and marketing rights for World Cup qualifier matches. He also admitted to paying bribes to organize friendly matches between national soccer teams, many of which were played in the United States. BARCELONA — Europe’s biggest stadium will be even bigger within five years, when the Camp Nou will hold more than 100,000 people under a new roof that will cover all seating sections. A joint bid by Japanese company Nikken Sekkei and a Catalan studio headed by architects Joan Pascual and Ramon Ausio won the tender to remodel the home of Barcelona, and the project will be presented publicly in a few weeks. Seating will increase from 99,354 to 105,000. Work is scheduled to start in the 2017-18 season, and will not keep the club from hosting games. The majority of fans are exposed to rain, sun, and wind, but in the updated stadium, “all seats will be
covered and protected from adverse weather,” Barcelona said, adding that all seats will be replaced and spacing between them will be improved. The top tier capacity will be increased, and it will have an even height throughout the stadium. One side is currently higher than the others. The winning proposal stood out “for being open, elegant, serene, timeless Mediterranean and democratic,” and represented a “silent and powerful tribute to the stadium built by Francesc Mitjans in 1957,” Barcelona said on Wednesday. The area underneath the grandstands will be open and visible from the outside. The current
facade walls will be removed. “It is a unique solution, reproducing the characteristic vision of the grandstand and canopy, from the inside out,” Barcelona said. New giant video screens will also be installed. The club said Nikken Sekkei was responsible for the design of the Saitama Super Arena, the Big Swan Stadium in Niigata, and the Tokyo Dome, all in Japan. The Catalan studio has a “long and proven history of experience” in residential buildings, office blocks, and hotels in Barcelona. She said her family doctor had first given her the drug 10 years ago after she frequently became sick, had irregular electrocardiogram results, a magnesium deficiency and a family history of diabetes. The 28-year old Russian, a five-time grand slam champion and the highest paid woman in sports, will be provisionally suspended starting March 12, the International Tennis Federation (ITF) said. For the health conditions Sharapova says she has, however, doctors say the scientific evidence for Mildronate is limited compared with many medicines widely available in Europe and the United States, where Sharapova trains, which have full regulatory backing and years of robust safety and

Meldonium is cheap and available over the counter without a prescription in some eastern European countries, where it is marketed as Mildronate by the Latvian pharmaceutical firm Grindeks. The drug, originally developed by scientists at the Latvian Institute of Organic Synthesis, is not licensed by two of the world’s biggest medicines regulators: the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the United States where Sharapova trains, and the EU’s European Medicines Agency. A spokeswoman for Grindeks said the firm had not applied for a licence for Mildronate from either the FDA or the EMA, but said the drug is registered in Latvia, Lithuania, Russia and other countries of the former Soviet Union. KINGSTON - Six-times Olympic gold medallist Usain Bolt on Wednesday helped announce the inaugural Racers Grand Prix in Kingston set for June 11 and hinted he might produce a special performance on Jamaica soil. Bolt, the Jamaican world record holder in the 100 and 200 metres, will headline a strong field in the Rio Olympics run-up event that includes world 400m champion Wayde van Niekirk of South Africa and American 100m bronze medallist Tori Bowie. “The fact that I’ll be competing this year it’s a motivation to work even harder to make sure when I compete here, I will be in top form to run fast times to show the country that I’m ready to go to Rio (Olympics) and do great things,” Bolt told Reuters.
Bolt said it was a well-positioned meet for most athletes because it is just before Olympic trials so they can go out and compete and know what they need to work on. Glen Mills, chairman of the organizing committee of the meet and the coach of Bolt and others at the Racers Track Club, said former world record holder Asafa Powell and 2012 Olympic sprint medallists Yohan Blake and Warren Weir were among other athletes expected to compete. Mills said he hoped the event would grow into a circuit of eight or 10 meets in the North American Central American and Caribbean Athletics Association (NACAC) and had the support of NACAC president Victor Lopez. Meanwhile, Bolt is again setting his sights on dominating a third suc-
cessive Olympics. “Training is going well you know, I’ve really stepped up the tempo,” he said. “I was out for a bit because of an ankle problem, but everything is going smoothly now. “I’m really focused and I really want it, so I’m just pushing myself, working hard and hopefully my coach will give me the go ahead to compete very soon,” Bolt said. NAYPYITAW - Myanmar’s National League for Democracy (NLD) has proposed a close friend of Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi as its presidential candidate, ending a four-month wait for the identity of the president expected to rule in her name. The NLD nominated Htin Kyaw, who joined the party just two months ago, as its lower house candidate. Thanks to the party’s crushing parliamentary majority, that makes him near-certain to become titular head of the country’s first democratically elected government since the army seized power in 1962. The wildly popular Suu Kyi and the NLD won a landslide electoral victory in November, but she is barred from holding the presidency herself under a junta-drafted 2008
constitution because her children are not Myanmar citizens. Suu Kyi has said that she would run the country regardless through a proxy. Until Thursday, she and the NLD leadership had kept the identity of their nominee a closely guarded secret even from rank-andfile MPs. N. Korea fires missiles, liquidates Seoul’s assets
SEOUL - North Korea fired two short-range ballistic missiles into the sea on Thursday in defiance of a U.N. Security Council resolution, as South Korean and U.S. forces conducted massive war games. The North also announced on Thursday it has scrapped all agreements with the South on commercial exchange projects and would “liquidate” South Korean assets left behind in its territory. North Korea has a large stockpile of short-range missiles and is developing long-range and intercontinental missiles as well. The missiles fired on Thursday flew about 500 km (300 miles) off its east coast city of Wonsan and were likely from the Soviet-developed Scud series, South Korea’s defence ministry said. Japan, which is within range of the longer-range variant of Scud missiles or the upgraded Rodong missiles, lodged a protest through the North Korean embassy in Beijing, Japan’s Kyodo news agency reported. North Korea often fires shortrange missiles when tensions rise on the Korean peninsula. Pyongyang gets particularly upset about the annual U.S.-South Korea drills, which its says are preparations for an invasion. The U.S. and South Korea remain technically at war with the North because the 1950-53 Korean War ended in an armed truce instead of a peace agreement. Around 17,000 U.S. military per-
sonnel are participating alongside some 300,000 South Korean troops in what South Korea’s Defence Ministry has called the “largestever” joint military exercises. MADIUN - The local immigration authorities have detained a Sri Lankan national for overstaying his permit in Indonesia. The 33-year old Sri Lankan national, identified as Amila Srinath Jayathilaka (33), is being held in custody at the Madiun penitentiary for further investigation, Head of the Madiun City Immigration Office Sigit Roesdianto said here on Wednesday. The immigration authorities arrested him after receiving a report that a foreign national had over-
stayed his permit, he said. Amila Srinath had been staying in neighboring Magetan district where he worked as a manager of a garment factory, PT Bintang Inti Karya, for the past one month. According to his permit of stay, the Sri Lankan national should have worked for PT Bintang Abadi Persada in Karanganyar district, Central Java. BUSINESS Trump’s positions on trade, alliances could roil Asia ties
WASHINGTON — China is ripping off America in trade and should be slapped with a fat import tax. U.S. military allies Japan and South Korea are freeloading and need to pull their weight. The pan-Pacific trade pact negotiated by the Obama administration is a “total disaster.” With characteristic brashness, Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump has staked out uncompromising positions on Asia policy that could potentially roil U.S. relations with the region if he won the White House. That’s already prompted some sharp commentary from usually friendly countries in Asia, and expressions of contempt from Republican foreign policy hands who have vowed to oppose Trump. Presidential hopefuls of both parties typically talk tough on China because of America’s yawning trade deficit and the migration of U.S. manufacturing jobs to countries with cheaper labor. Mitt Romney, the Republican presidential nominee who lost the 2012 election, had vowed to declare China a currency manipulator on day one in office. Trump is making the same threat, but also proposing a 45 percent tariff on Chinese imports into the U.S. And as the business mogul vows to “Make America Great Again!” he’s poking a stick elsewhere in Asia. He has accused India and Vietnam, which have pulled closer to the U.S. as China’s might has grown, of taking American jobs. And Trump is questioning what the U.S. gets out of its decades-old
security alliances with Japan and South Korea, which host 80,000 U.S. forces — the backbone of the U.S. military presence in Asia. “If somebody attacks Japan, we have to immediately go and start World War III, okay? If we get attacked, Japan doesn’t have to help us. Somehow, that doesn’t sound so fair,” Trump said on the stump in South Carolina Dec. 30. Trump also asserts that Japan and South Korea should pay for U.S. military protection, but overlooks that they already pay about half the cost of stationing U.S. forces on their soil. In Washington, more than 70 Republican national security experts have signed an open letter condemning Trump, saying his insistence on close allies like Japan paying vast sums for protection, “is the sentiment of a racketeer, not the leader of alliances that have served us so well since World War II.” Asian commentators have responded to Trump’s rise with a combination of puzzlement and anxiety. “U.S. politics is in disarray,” lamented the Nikkei newspaper in an editorial after Trump took an important step toward clinching the Republican nomination to contest the November election when he won

Tektekan of Kediri, from catastrophe repellent becomes a tradition
TABANAN - Pengerupukan activity ahead of Nyepi is synonymous with the parade of ogoh-ogoh or papier mâché demon. However, it is different for customary village in the region of Kediri, Tabanan. Although it has been agreed to negate the ogoh-ogoh parade, the village with the largest population in the subdistrict of Tabanan displays sacred art tradition named tektekan.
Originally, this tektekan art was only performed to repel catastrophe, but over time it becomes a tradition of customary villagers of Kediri. Tektekan is held again this year for two weeks by seven hamlets at Kediri village divided into two groups and it is held once in two days around the village starting from February 23 until March 8, 2016 (night of Pengerupukan). At the night of Pengerupukan, the seven hamlets displayed their skill in front of the Puseh temple. “It is held up to ahead of Nyepi starting at 20:00 until 23:00,” said a resident of Sema hamlet, Kediri, Ngurah Manik, 30, Monday (Mar. 7). The tektekan shown by each hamlet at Kediri village is not the same as in other areas designated for entertainment. This kind of tektekan may not be played carelessly, and can only be played at particular time. It is said that the tektekan is only played if the condition of local village is experiencing a catastrophe like famine or epidemic. That is why this tradition is highly anticipated by the outside community as entertainment, but very avoidable and undesirable by customary villagers of Kediri because it means a disaster is happening. Wayan Sudana, 34, a resident of Sema hamlet who is a maker and repairmen of okokan (large cowbell), said that ahead of Nyepi there will be many people at Kediri village repairing their okokan and some even purchase a new one. “On average, each family has two or a pair of okokan,” he explained.

the village, but it is not known for sure when the tradition first appeared. “This tradition is a heritage through generations functioned to repel catastrophe and diseases,” he said. Four years ago this tektekan attraction began to be presented regularly before Nyepi. One of the temple priests aged 90 years old told that he did not clearly know about it. However, until the age of 51 years, he had seen this tektekan tradition so many times. “No one knows for sure about the history of this tradition. According to our parents, this tradition has been inherited through generations. The emergence of tektekan is never predictable because it is usually preceded by
epidemic at the village,” he said. He recounted that initially the tektekan was only performed by children. However, when the players of tektekan trance, it will be taken over by adults, including the elderly, men and women. Initially, this tektekan used kulkul (split drum) made from bamboo and okokan tradition, a kind of traditional musical instrument and a cow necklace obtained by borrowing from outside the village. “In terms of tradition, the tektekan is played by using tools such as bamboo kulkul and okokan. Parliament rejects sharing of land acquisition fund DENPASAR - Chairman of Commission III of the Bali House of Representatives, Nengah Tamba, rejected the request of fund sharing for land acquisition related to the construction of shortcuts on the MengwitaniSingaraja road section. Previously, Governor of Bali, Made Mangku Pastika, expressed that Bali provincial government will help the land acquisition, while the rest of the construction is financed by state budget. However, if sharing the fund like at the Titab Dam case, we will try to learn about the legal basis,” he said at the Bali Parliament Building, Monday (Mar. 7). Tamba added there are actually 10 shortcuts to be built on the Mengwitani-Singaraja section. Feasibility study was already made in 2015, and the detailed engineering design (DED) is being processed this year. However, of the ten shortcuts, only four points get priority. “Four priorities have something to do with the budget. If the ten shortcuts are worth IDR 2 trillion more, four shortcuts will only cost IDR 624 billion, excluding the land acquisition. We want they are entirely funded by state budget including the land acquisition,” he explained. According to Tamba, estimation of the land acquisition cost can only be determined after completion of the DED. As planned, it will be resumed with environmental impact analysis (Amdal) in 2017, land acquisition in 2018, and construction of the shortcut begins in 2019. However, his commission wanted the process can be shortened. “We want the Amdal process can be made faster, so that the land acquisition can also be done in 2017 and construction can begin in 2018 because it is very vital for community needs. It is for equitable development, accelerating the traffic of goods and services as well as strengthening the economy,” he added. Tamba continued that actually if there are problems in the four shortcuts given the priority, the construction can be diverted to the other six shortcuts. The problem here, for example, is related to land acquisition. Moreover, there are shortcuts that should pass through people’s forest and thus it requires a permit of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry. Previously, the Head of the Bali Development Planning Board (Bappeda), Putu Astawa, said there are four shortcuts to be built on the Mengwitani-Singaraja road section. They consist of Candi Kuning (KM 46 +450), Wanagiri 1 (KM 55 +250), Wanagiri 2 (KM 55 + 700), and Gitgit 2 (KM 59 +450). The entire shortcuts shorten travel time by up to half of normal time. At the Candi Kuning, for instance, without shortcut must be taken within 3 minutes because the length of the existing distance reaches 1,408 meters. “As planned, the length of Candi Kuning shortcut is 749 meters. Thus, the travel time only reaches 1.5 minutes,” he added. Governor of Bali, Made Mangku Pastika, hoped the shortcut construction can soon be realized. Moreover, central government has agreed to fund it considering it belongs to national road or a primary arterial road 1. Then, the government of Bali Province will help in land acquisition. “Hopefully, the minister can realize it because it is national road ... so it must be financed through the state budget,” he said. PORTRAIT of poverty still adorns the Bangli district. This time it occurs at Kayubihi village, Bangli, precisely in Jangkaan hamlet. Who are they and how does the condition of their life look like? Jangkaan hamlet, Kayubihi is not far from the center of Bangli. It will take around 15 minutes. The area is very rich in agricultural potential such as tangerine. Behind it, in fact there are still residents living in poverty. His name is I Nyoman Tunas. This father of two children have lived for nine years in a tiny building sizing 3x4 meter with roof tile and woven bamboo walls. To support his life, he can only rely on the income of giving massage. Every now and then he becomes a farm laborer at his neighborhood, while his wife is a sokasi (oblation or rice basket) maker with erratic sales. “The revenue of becoming a masseur is not much, but I still rely on this profession,” he said. Aside from Tunas, similar condition is also experienced by his sister Ni Wayan Tresna who lives next door. This old widow must live in damaged and rickety hut with woven bamboo walls. Roof of
the building is seen to have curved as if it would collapse soon and the floor made of soil looks wet indicating if there is incoming rainwater. “When it rains, the water will come into the house. So, the entire floor is wet,” she said. Image of poverty becomes more visible from the bamboo bed without decent mattress. To warm the body, this gray-haired widow only relies on her beloved blanket. “I cannot buy,” said Tresna. Although her body was not as strong as ever, in living her life, Tresna is forced to be a hoeing laborer other than making a sokasi. When getting lucky, she can earn about IDR 50,000 per day. However, when compared to the bitter life she suffered, of course the total income is not able to change everything. “It is only enough to eat. FUKUSHIMA - The robots sent in to find highly radioactive fuel at Fukushima’s nuclear reactors have “died”; a subterranean “ice wall” around the crippled plant meant to stop groundwater from becoming contaminated has yet to be finished. And authorities still don’t know how to dispose of highly radioactive water stored in an ever mounting number of tanks around the site. Five years ago, one of the worst earthquakes in history triggered a 10metre high tsunami that crashed into the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station causing multiple meltdowns. Nearly 19,000 people were killed or left missing and 160,000 lost their homes and livelihoods. Today, the radiation at the Fukushima plant is still so powerful it has proven impossible to get into its bowels to find and remove the extremely dangerous blobs of melted fuel rods. The plant’s operator, Tokyo Electric Power Co (Tepco) , has made some progress, such as removing hundreds of spent fuel roads in one damaged building. But the technology needed to establish the location of the melted fuel rods in the other three reactors at the plant has not
been developed. “It is extremely difficult to access the inside of the nuclear plant,” Naohiro Masuda, Tepco’s head of decommissioning said in an interview. “The biggest obstacle is the radiation.” The fuel rods melted through their containment vessels in the reactors, and no one knows exactly where they are now. This part of the plant is so dangerous to humans, Tepco has been developing robots, which can swim under water and negotiate obstacles in damaged tunnels and piping to search for the melted fuel rods. But as soon as they get close to the reactors, the radiation destroys their wiring and renders them useless, causing long delays, Masuda said. Each robot has to be custom-built
for each building.”It takes two years to develop a single-function robot,” Masuda said. IRRADIATED WATER Tepco, which was fiercely criticised for its handling of the disaster, says conditions at the Fukushima power station, site of the worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl in Ukraine 30 years ago, have improved dramatically. Radiation levels in many places at the site are now as low as those in Tokyo. More than 8,000 workers are at the plant at any one time, according to officials on a recent tour. Traffic is constant as they spread across the site, removing debris, building storage tanks, laying piping and preparing to dismantle parts of the plant. Much of the work involves pumping a steady torrent of water into the wrecked and highly radiated reactors to cool them down. Afterward, the radiated water is then pumped out of the plant and stored in tanks that are proliferating around the site. (rtr)
DHAKA - A spelling mistake in an online bank transfer instruction helped prevent a nearly $1 billion heist last month involving the Bangladesh central bank and the New York Fed, banking officials said. Unknown hackers still managed to get away with about $80 million, one of the largest known bank thefts in history. The hackers breached Bangladesh Bank’s systems last month and stole its credentials for payment transfers, two senior Bangladesh Bank officials said. They then bombarded the Federal Reserve Bank of New York with nearly three dozen requests to move money from the Bangladesh bank’s account there to entities in the Philippines and Sri Lanka, the officials said. Four requests to transfer a total of about $81 million to the Philippines went through, but a fifth, for $20 million, to a Sri Lankan non-profit organisation got held up because the hackers misspelled the name of the NGO. The full name of the non-profit could not be learned. But one of the officials said the hackers misspelled “foundation” in the NGO’s name as “fandation”, prompting a routing bank, Deutsche Bank, to seek clarification from the Bangladesh central bank, which stopped the transaction. Deutsche Bank declined to comment. At the same time the unusually high number of payment instructions and the transfer requests to private entities - as opposed to other banks - made the Fed suspicious, which also alerted the Bangladeshis, the officials said. The details of how the hacking came to light and was stopped before it did more damage have not been previously reported. Bangladesh Bank has billions of dollars in a current account with the Fed, which it uses for international settlements. The transactions that got stopped totalled between $850 million and $870 million, one of the officials said. Last year, Russian computer security company Kaspersky Lab said a multinational gang of cyber criminals had stolen as much as $1 billion from as many as 100 financial institutions around the world in about two years. Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein’s son Qusay took $1 billion from Iraq’s central bank on the orders of his father on the day before coalition forces began bombing the country in 2003, American and Iraqi officials have said. More than a month after the attack, Bangladeshi officials are scrambling to trace the money, shore up security and identify weaknesses in their systems. They said there is little hope of ever catching the hackers, and it could take months before the money is recovered, if at all. ANCHORAGE — Skygazers from around the U.S. caught a flight from Alaska to Hawaii for prime viewing of a total solar eclipse that unfolded over parts of Indonesia and the Indian and Pacific oceans. A dozen eclipse enthusiasts were among the 181 passengers on the plane Tuesday that departed Anchorage for Honolulu. The rare event occurs when the moon is close enough to Earth to completely block out the sun. Joe Rao, an associate astronomer at the American Museum of
Natural History’s Hayden Planetarium in New York, called Alaska Airlines last fall, explaining that the flight would be in the right place for the eclipse. The route was expected to encounter the darkest shadow of the moon as it passed over Earth. Problem was, the plane would
be passing by nearly a half-hour too soon. The airline rescheduled the flight to depart 25 minutes later, and it rendezvoused with the eclipse’s sweet spot nearly 700 miles north of Honolulu. After the schedule tweak, Rao and a dozen other astronomy aficionados booked seats for the big show at 36,000 feet. Rao, like other self-dubbed “eclipse geeks,” was thrilled about setting out to witness his 11th such spectacle.
“It is an experience,” he said of watching the sun turn into a giant black disk in the sky. “Every fiber of you gets involved in those few moments when the sun is totally eclipsed.” The eclipse was expected to last just under two minutes in that location. The last total solar eclipse was in March 2015, and the one before that was in 2012. Craig Small, a semiretired Hayden Planetarium astronomer, was viewing his 31st total eclipse.
To mark each viewing, he carried a special eclipse flag made in 1972. Also on board was Dan McGlaun, who brought 200 pairs of special filter glasses to distribute to other passengers. McGlaun, a project manager who runs eclipse2017.org, was excited about viewing his 12th total eclipse. “It’s going to be amazing. WHO advises pregnant women to avoid travel to Zika-affected areas
GENEVA - The World Health Organization (WHO) advised pregnant women on Tuesday not to travel to areas with ongoing outbreaks of Zika virus due to the potential risk of birth defects. Sexual transmission is “relatively common” and health services in Zika-affected areas should be ready for potential increases in cases of neurological syndromes such as microcephaly and congenital malformations, it said. “Pregnant women whose sexual partners live in or travel to areas with Zika virus outbreaks should ensure safe sexual practices or
abstain from sex for the duration of their pregnancy,” the WHO said in a statement, based on advice from its Emergency Committee of independent experts. Previously the U.N. agency had advised pregnant women to consider deferring non-essential travel to areas with ongoing transmission of the mosquito-borne virus, which is spreading through Latin America, including Olympics host Brazil. The link between Zika and microcephaly, where babies are born with small heads and developmental problems, as well as Guillain-Barre
syndrome, which can cause paralysis, has not been proven but studies point in that direction, it said. “Microcephaly is now only one of several documented birth abnormalities associated with Zika during pregnancy,” WHO directorgeneral Margaret Chan told a news conference. “Grave outcomes include fetal death, placental insufficiency, fetal growth retardation and injury to the central nervous system.” “It is important we recommend strong public health measures and not wait until we have definitive proof,” she said. DENPASAR - The government of Badung district is considered to have not maximally managed the hotel and restaurant tax (PHR) revenue in the region although the regionally generated revenue (PAD) of Badung is the largest among the districts and municipality. “In my opinion, Badung has not been optimal in exploring the potential owned. On that account, it is necessary to be improved. Badung can apply online hotel and restaurant tax payment to minimize leakage because it is often used by irresponsible individuals,” said the Governor of Bali, Made Mangku Pastika, when receiving the audience of the Regent of Badung, Nyoman Giri Prasta, at his office, Monday (Mar. 7). Bali reopens airport
KUTA - The airport authority at Ngurah Rai in Bali has restarted operations after being shut down for 24 hours on account of Nyepi Day being observed on Wednesday. “We have already begun operations at the airport at 6 a.m. local time,” Trikora Harjo, general manager of PT Angkasa Pura I of the Ngurah Rai International Airport, stated here on Thursday. Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. PETERSBURG - As a largerthan-life celebrity, Hulk Hogan considered it entertainment when he embellished his sex life but the Gawker news website crossed a line by posting a video of him having sex with a friend’s wife, the former professional wrestler testified on Tuesday. Hogan is seeking $100 million in damages from Gawker in a case that weighs a celebrity’s right to privacy against freedom of the press. Hogan testified he still is suffering from the release of the one-minute, 41second edited sex clip in 2012. “Everything changed in my life from that point forward,” he said. The sexual encounter came five years before the video was posted and Hogan, one of the wrestling world’s lead figures in the 1980s and ‘90s, said it had been recorded at a personal low point as he went through a divorce. “I was moving forward and this tape really sabotaged me,” he said. Attorneys for Gawker, which could be financially ruined by a loss, claim that it was Hogan who made his sex life a public matter. On Tuesday they presented him with clips from interviews and excerpts from his reality TV show, for which he was filmed on a toilet, and comments he had made about the size of his penis. Hogan emphasized the difference between his private character and the bombastic persona he used professionally with “artistic liberty.”

Breakout British star Daisy Ridley, 23, led the way for “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” getting nods for best female performance, best hero and best fight in the Walt Disney movie that has taken more than $2 billion at the worldwide box office. John Boyega, 23, was nominated for best breakthrough and best action performance for his role as turncoat Stormtrooper Finn, and the movie will also compete for movie of the year and best cast ensemble at the fan-based awards show in April. “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” failed to win any of its five Oscar nominations in February - mostly for visual effects and editing - and failed to get a best picture nomination. The MTV Movie Awards however, are all about fans. “It’s about blockbuster movies that audiences line up to see; comedies, superheroes, science fiction, fantasy action,” the show’s executive producer, Casey Patterson, said in a statement. GIANYAR - The increase in waste volume during a series of Nyepi, especially Pengerupukan falling on Tuesday (Mar. 8), was not so significant. However, the Gianyar Sanitation and Landscaping Agency (DKP) must work extra hard and make special arrangements for the cleanup and waste transportation. The Head of the DKP Gianyar, I Wayan Kujus Pawitra, said that daily average of waste transported reaches 1,500 cubic meters. Waste volume on Pengerupukan typically increases by about 10 percent. “It does not increase so high when compared to Galungan, for instance. But the difficulty is that the waste on Pengerupukan is scattered about. A lot of garbage is scattered on main roads and location of parading the ogoh-ogoh,” he said.
