Los Angeles prosecutor drops artist’s sex accusation against Polanski LOS ANGELES - Prosecutors in Los Angeles said on Tuesday they declined to pursue criminal charges against film director Roman Polanski after a woman said last fall that he molested her 43 years ago when she was 10 years old. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office was investigating an accusation that Polanski, a long-time fugitive from the United States, committed lewd and lascivious acts with a child and sodomy with a minor, but did not proceed because it was beyond the statute of limitations, spokesman Greg Risling said. The office pegged the date as Jan. 1, 1975 and declined to identify Polanski’s accuser. The prosecutor opened the investigation in December. The accuser, who identified herself online as artist Marianne Barnard, accused Polanski, now 84, in October of having molested her when he photographed her as a naked 10-year-old under an open fur coat in a photo shoot arranged by her mother. “After it happened, I didn’t say anything to anyone,” Barnard said in a post on thepetition.com, where she is seeking signatures urging that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revoke Polanski’s membership. Polanski’s lawyer, Harland Braun, said the incident never happened, adding that because police and prosecutors have stopped looking into the matter, he is pursuing his own investigation in an effort to clear his client. “We have what we believe is a totally fictitious case against Mr. Polanski,” said Braun. Polanski in 1977 admitted to having unlawful sex with a 13year-old girl in Los Angeles and spent 42 days in pre-trial custody. He fled the United States the following year, fearing a plea bargain with prosecutors would be overruled and that he would get a lengthy prison term. (rtr)

Walt Disney Co’s ABC broadcast network is bringing back “Roseanne,” starring Roseanne Barr and John Goodman, for nine episodes starting March 27. In the new episodes, the titular Roseanne, played by Barr, is now a grandmother who voted for Trump and at times clashes with family members and friends with opposing views, the show’s cast and producers said at a Television Critics Association event. The original “Roseanne” aired from 1988 to 1997 and was the most-watched show on U.S. television in 1989 and 1990. It featured a blue-collar family, the Conners,

with overweight parents struggling to get by in the fictional town of Lanford, Illinois. The series was praised for its realistic portrayal of a working-class family in the United States, and Barr said she wanted the revival to also present a true-to-life portrait of a country in which half the voters chose Trump. “It was the working-class people who elected Trump,” Barr said. “I felt that was very real and something that needed to be discussed.” Barr herself has spoken in support of Trump, but the show’s producers said the series does not

advocate a political stance. “There is no agenda on anybody’s part but to get honest feelings out there within a family that’s relateable,” executive producer Bruce Helford said. Many original cast members returned for the revival including Goodman, who plays Roseanne’s husband Dan, and Sara Gilbert, who portrays daughter Darlene. Gilbert said the new episodes show a family “that is divided by politics but still filled with love.” The revival will also deal with topical issues such as opioid addiction and access to healthcare, Helford said. Explosion on Iranian oil tanker forces rescue team to retreat

BEIJING/SEOUL - Rescue crews were forced to retreat from a stricken Iranian oil tanker in the East China Sea on Wednesday following an explosion on the ship as a fire raged for a fourth day after a dramatic collision. The blast happened on board the tanker in the afternoon after rescue crews were dousing the ship with foam in an attempt to put out the fire, China’s Transport Ministry (MOT) said in a statement on Wednesday. The cause and damage to the tanker from the incident were not clear. The ship was carrying condensate, a highly flammable ultra-light crude, to deliver to South Korea when it collided with a Chinese freight ship on Saturday. Dozens of rescue boats from China and South Korea have been battling strong winds, high waves and poisonous fumes to comb a 900-square-nautical-mile (3,100square-kilometre) area for 31 missing sailors and tame the fire, amid growing concerns the listing ship may explode or sink. The Sanchi was carrying 136,000 tonnes of condensate, equivalent to about 1 million barrels and worth some $60 million. The Chinese

government said late on Tuesday it had not found a “large-scale” oil leak, and the condensate was burning off or evaporating so quickly that it would leave little residue - less than 1 percent - within five hours of a spill. That reduces the chances of a crude-style oil slick. Iranian officials said there was still a chance of finding survivors among the 31 remaining crew, who are all Iranian nationals except for two Bangladeshi citizens. The body of a crew member was found on Monday in the water near the tanker. “If the crew have been able to reach (...) some place like the engine

room, then the chances of their rescue are high,” said Hassan Qashqavi, a senior Iranian foreign ministry official, according to ISNA. “But if, God forbid, they have been caught up in explosions because of flames inside the ship, then the chance of their rescue is small.” VULNERABLE TO BREAK-UP Authorities and environmentalists worry though the ship is increasingly vulnerable to breaking up and sinking the longer the blaze rages. Still, the ultra light crude is highly volatile when exposed to air and water. South Korea’s Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries warned on Wednesday the tanker could burn for up to one month, potentially expelling the tanker’s bunker fuel, or the heavy fuel oil that powers a ship’s engines and contaminating the waters.

“We believe flames would last for two weeks or a month considering previous cases of oil tank accidents,” said Park Sung-dong, an official at the ministry. Bunker fuel is the dirtiest kind of oil, extremely toxic when spilled, though much less explosive. Fuel oil is relatively easy to contain because volumes are lower and its viscosity means it’s easier to extract from water, but even small volumes can hurt marine life. Rai Dharmawijaya Mantra - I Ketut Sudikerta (Mantra - Kerta). Half of Mt. Agung’s evacuees return home

SEMARAPURA - After the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) downgraded the dangerous radius of Mount Agung eruption to 6 kilometers, the homecoming traffic of evacuees in Klungkung district continues. Until last Tuesday (Jan.

9), the remaining evacuees are only about half of the initial number. Chief Executive Officer of the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Klungkung, Putu Widiada, explained the surviving refugees totally amount to 6,986 people spreading across 37 villages. The number has decreased from the initial figure of

11,282 people. “Their homecoming continues. Many tents have been empty,” he explained. He further submitted that their homecoming was done independently. District government no longer prepares transport services as before when the alert status of the volcano was downgraded from warning to watch. “We also want to

see the evacuees are independent. Their homecoming is not facilitated,” he said. As estimation, more and more evacuees will return home considering that many of them live outside the radius of 6 kilometers. “Possibly, there are approximately 3,000s people living within the radius of 6 km,” he said.

The measure to enable the evacuees to go home seems not to make them peaceful. At least, this condition is experienced by I Wayan Darta from Duda village, Selat. “Now, we’d like to go home first. Human antibodies made in cows could be developed to treat MERS

LONDON - Human antibodies made in genetically engineered cows have proved safe in an early stage clinical trial, U.S. scientists said on Wednesday, and could be developed into a treatment for the fatal viral disease, MERS.

MERS, or Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, is a SARS-like viral infection first identified in Saudi Arabia in 2012 that has caused deadly outbreaks in the Middle East as well as sporadic cases around the world. Despite more than five years of waves of infection, no effective treatment or vaccine has been developed against MERS, which has a 35 percent case fatality rate and has so far killed at least 740 people worldwide. More than 80 percent of MERS cases have been reported in Saudi Arabia, according to the World Health Organization. In research published in the Lancet Infectious Diseases journal on Wednesday, scientists found that human antibodies called SAB-301 generated in socalled transchromosomic cattle -- animals with human DNA incorporated into their genome -- were safe in healthy volunteers. The antibodies also persisted for more time than the MERS virus typically remains in the body, the study found, with antibodies still detected in bloodstream after 90 days. This points a way ahead for the antibodies -- which offer immunity against an invading infection -- to be tested in further trials in people infected with MERS,

the researchers said. “This is the first study to show the safety and immune effects of a potential treatment for MERS,” said John Beigel at Leidos Biomedical Research, who coled the U.S. government-funded study. “The data from our study suggest that SAB-301 is safe, and further research into the treatment is warranted.” The idea of using human antibodies has developed in recent years in a variety of severe and emerging diseases, including flu, severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), MERS and Ebola. Blood plasma harvested from people whose immune systems have successfully fought the disease contains the right antibodies and can be given to other patients to help their immune systems fight the virus. But harvesting human plasma is not always easy or swift when a new disease emerges, so scientists turned to the idea of transchromosomic cattle as a way of manufacturing specific antibodies in larger amounts. Transchromosomic cattle have human DNA that codes for human antibodies incorporated into their genome. To make SAB-301, they were injected with a part of the MERS virus, stimulating their immune systems to produce antibodies against it. The antibodies were then extracted from the cattle’s blood and purified. “The process of creating antibody treatments by harvesting antibodies from human donors is slow and often small-scale,” said Beigel. “However, the cattleproduced antibodies could be created as soon as three months.” (rtr)

Further research is needed to know why this happens and how to prevent it, the study team writes in British Journal of Anaesthesia. “I think there’s been a lot of research on mortality and a lot of research on complications, but not too much on how people actually get back to how they perform at home,” lead author Dr. Timothy Gaulton told Reuters Health. “That was a part of the reason that we wanted to look at the outcome, and in general obese patients,” said Gaulton, of the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. It’s important for potential joint surgery patients to know that in some circumstances, because of their age, weight or preoperative functional dependence, they may be at higher risk of getting worse after surgery, he said in a telephone interview. “It’s something that needs to be considered both for the patient and for the surgeon when they make this decision about moving forward with getting a joint surgery,” he said. The researchers studied 2,519 adults over age 61 who had joint surgery for arthritis. About two-thirds of participants had joint replacements. And 45 percent were obese, meaning they had a body mass index (BMI) - a measure of weight relative to height - of 30 or above at the time of their surgery. Before surgery and during the following two years, participants were asked if they had any physical, mental, emotional or memory problems that affected their activities of daily living. These activities could include things like getting out of bed, toileting, bathing and eating. Needing help for any of these tasks was labeled as a dependence disability. About 22 percent of participants reported new or worsening dependence approximately two years after their surgery - including more than one in four obese patients and one in five non-obese patients. Researchers calculated that obese joint surgery patients had a 35 percent higher risk of dependence after surgery compared to non-obese patients. (rtr)

DENPASAR - A number of persistent and hazardous organic pollutants are believed to be still circulating in Indonesia. One of them is Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDEs) commonly used as a flame retardant. The PBDE may still be used by the industries of plastics, textiles, conveyance and electronics. “This needs to be our common concern because textiles, transportation, electronics and telematics are the national flagship industries having been established in the National Industrial Development Master Plan 2015-2035,” said the Head of Industry Research and Development Agency, Ministry of Industry, Ngakan Timur Antara, in International Seminar on “Electronic Industrial Waste Management and Waste as Industrial Resources to Support Reducing Releases of PBDEs / POPs” in Sanur, Denpasar, on Monday (Jan. 8). According to Ngakan, economic growth and job creation are caused by many factors where one of them is the industry sector. However, industrial development also has a negative impact on the environment, mainly due to the use of hazardous chemicals as raw materials or auxiliary materials in the production process such as the PBDEs. Actually, Indonesia has ratified the Stockholm Convention related

to the protection of human health and the environment from persistent organic pollutants through the Law No.19/2009 on Ratification of Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs). Under the Stockholm Convention, there are 12 ingredients categorized to be persistent and very dangerous organic pollutants. “Indonesian government needs to improve the policy structure by reducing, limiting or eliminating the use of POPs including PBDEs in the production process as well as optimizing proper waste management,” he added. Ngakan added that one of the methods of waste management that can be adopted is the wasteto-energy approach. In addition to helping reduce waste generation, the approach can also help reduce the use of fossil fuels. In turn, this also supports the government’s commitment in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. “Plastic, textile, conveyance and electronics industries are suggested to use standardized waste treatment technologies. If this is implemented well in Indonesia, certainly it brings in greatest benefits to the sustainability of natural resources, preservation of environmental functions and improvement of people’s welfare,” he explained. AMLAPURA — After the dangerous radius is reduced to 6 km, evacuees from safe areas have flocked home. However, when arriving at home, they are confused because of losing job and livestock. Pasebaya Lingkar Gunung Agung once highlighted this matter by questioning the next program of local government. Besides, staying at home is still haunted by anxiety against the activities of Mount Agung. “People are still confused. Well, let’s think about the solution. After they are told to go home, what can they do next?” highlighted Pawana. According to him, there are many local agencies that can play an active role in paying attention to evacuees having returned home. People need a touch of the program so that they can get back up faster. Moreover, the residents in KRB II, he said, reach tens of thousands of people. Most of them used to work as farmers. Thus, he encouraged that more programs can be directed in the livestock sector. In the main regional budget 2018 is drafted to more maximize the handling of evacuees. Besides, there are also supporting budget from hotel and restaurant tax of Badung and Denpasar as well as third party funds having gone through special account of local government. SEOUL - South Korean President Moon Jae-in credited U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday for helping to spark the first inter-Korean talks in more than two years, and warned that Pyongyang would face stronger sanctions if provocations continued. The talks were held on Tuesday on the South Korean side of the demilitarised zone, which has divided the two Koreas since 1953, after a prolonged period of tension on the Korean peninsula over the North’s missile and nuclear programmes. Pokdarwis continues to explore the village potential, where the latest is the potential of the river. The local river remaining natural with a fairly heavy flow can be used for rafting adventure. This rafting tour is considered as the first one in North Bali. In playing the puppet, the puppeteer leans the puppets on a white thread of about half to one meter tied to an erythrina wooden stick placed on a banana trunk on both sides of the puppeteer. The gamelan accompaniment is a gender puppet with a five-tone scale. Puppet show of this ceremony is very dependent

Supporting artists of this show are at least 3 to 5 people consisting of a puppeteer and one or two pairs of gender gamelan players. As ritual arts, the day puppet show usually takes place around the venue of ceremony without using a special stage. The storyline is adapted to the

ceremony performed. If the staging is performed in Deva Yadnya, the play will feature Kunti Yadnya, Marisuda Bumi and others. Meanwhile, at the bhuta yadnya ceremony, the play will feature Bima Dadi Caru and so do the other ceremonies. They must be adjusted to the type of ceremony taking place. One of the cakes serving as a part of ritual, but usually presented as the offering, is the iku-iku cake. This round and oval-shaped cake with a flat bottom like a turtle has

a sweet taste and sticky. Sweet taste is prostrated not due to artificial sweetener, but it is from pure sugar. For the base, it uses banana leaf to avoid chemicals. Jaja iku-iku is often used as a snack by farmers served in their mutual assistance. For example, it is served when transplanting paddy seedlings in mutual assistance in the fields. In such a mass activity, it is usually accompanied with the provision of small lunch party. Jaja iku-iku is served as dessert after having the main course. Indonesian police probe foreign ‘orders’ for child pornography JAKARTA - Indonesian authorities are investigating whether a child pornography ring had links to an international network, police said on Tuesday, after videos of adult women engaged in sexual acts with boys went viral on social media. Police in West Java province said three boys, as young as seven, who figured in the videos are now in the care of social workers. At least five people have been arrested, including the mothers of two of the boys, on suspicion of violating child protection and pornography laws and could face up to 15 years in prison. Police are hunting for one other suspect. “Results of the preliminary investigation show that the director sold the videos to someone in Russia and Canada,” said regional police spokesman Yusri Yunus, adding that the motive of those

involved was to make money. “We are still investigating and coordinating with the national cyber crime unit.” The director received 31 million rupiah ($2,307) to make the videos, media have said. Indonesia has been vulnerable to child pornography and sexual abuse of minors because of poverty and lax enforcement of laws in the past. Authorities stopped 92 convicted Australian paedophiles from entering the country last year, based on immigration data. Two f-16 fighter aircraft to arrive in east java on friday MAGETAN - Two of the 24 F-16 Fighting Falcon Block 52ID fighter aircraft, received as grants from the United States and scheduled to arrive on December 12, 2017, are now expected at Iswahjudi, Magetan, East Java, on Friday (Jan 12). “The remaining two F-16 fighter aircrafts that are yet to be shipped from the United States are scheduled to arrive on Dec 12,” Commander of Iswahjudi Air Force Base, First Air Commodore Samsul Rizal, remarked on Tuesday. He further explained that the two F-16 fighter aircrafts, or the Fighting Fal were part of the six fighter aircraft, four of which had earlier arrived at the Iswahjudi Air Base. The delivery of the six fighter aircraft are being carried out in stages. Once all 24 fighter aircraft arrive, he revealed that a handover ceremony between the Ministry of Defense and the Indonesian Armed Forces and Indonesian Air Force Headquarters will be held at the Iswahjudi Air Force Base.

“Information released by the Ministry of Defense stated that the handover ceremony of the F-16 fighter aircraft will also be witnessed by representatives from the US government,” he stated. Rizal explained that during the F-16 handover ceremony, all aircraft provided by the United States, both in the No 3 Squadron which based in Iswahjudi Air Force Base and those sent to No 16 Squadron 16 based in Rusmin Nuryadin Air Force Base in Pekanbaru, Riau Province, will be present at the Iswahjudi Airport. As earlier reported, Indonesia had received a grant of 24 F-16 fighter aircraft from the United States, all of which are planned to be included in the Air Squadron 3 of the Iswahjudi Air Base and Air Squadron 16 of the Rusmin Nuryadin Air Base in Pekanbaru. Of this figure, only two fighter aircraft have yet to be delivered following a mechanical issue, and repairs have to be conducted before being sent to Indonesia for operations. (ant)

Indonesian minister urged to stop destroying illegal fishing boats

JAKARTA - Senior government and business officials on Wednesday urged Indonesia’s fisheries minister to stop blowing up foreign boats caught fishing illegally, saying the policy could hurt diplomatic ties and the fisheries industry. Under the popular minister, Susi Pudjiastuti, Indonesia has destroyed hundreds of foreign illegal vessels since 2014, among them Chinese, Thai and Vietnamese boats, in an effort to protect domestic fish stocks and fishermen. But Vice President Jusuf Kalla said the policy could affect relations with other countries. “In the view of the government, it’s enough already,” Kalla said, in comments reported by the daily newspaper Kompas and confirmed by his spokesman. “This concerns our relations with other countries.” In 2015, China expressed “serious concern” when one of its fishing vessels was among 41 blown up by Indonesia. The Indonesian Chamber of Commerce complained on Tuesday that the approach and what it termed a lack of focus on constructive policies had

damaged the fisheries industry, with exports of fishing products declining. “We ask the government to pay attention to the production aspects ... and to raising investment in the sector,” said a senior chamber member, Yugi Prayanto. Pudjiastuti has consistently ranked as Indonesia’s most popular minister since taking office in 2014, largely because of her robust approach to tackling illegal fishing and her rags-to-riches story. The outspoken minister has also won a large following on social media for candid posts and photographs showing her paddle boarding or dancing to the Beatles aboard a ship. A former fisheries entrepreneur, Pudjiastuti defended the policy in a video uploaded to YouTube, saying it was not her “trademark” policy but rather mandated by the law. “This is not an idea ... or hobby of Susi Pudjiastuti or President Jokowi,” she said, using the president’s nickname. “President Jokowi ordered the government to execute the fisheries law so that the massive theft of Indonesia’s fish can end.” The fishing industry suffers losses of nearly 200 billion rupiah ($14.89 million) every year because of illegal fishing, according to Pudjiastuti. Brighton beat Palace 2-1 to advance to the fourth round, with the VAR Neil Swarbrick reviewing and allowing Brighton striker Glenn Murray’s late winner to stand, after the ball initially appeared to brush off the player’s hand. After the collaboration between match referee Andre Marriner and Swarbrick was deemed a success, Glenn was confident that the system will assist English officials for years to come. “The FA generally thinks that in a few years’ time we will wonder how we ever lived without it,” Glenn told reporters on Tuesday. “We were a big supporter of VAR being embraced in football after years of it being challenged by Sepp Blatter and FIFA. “I was pleased as it seemed to work the right way... The good news is that the game did not stop once and there appeared to be good teamwork between (referee) Andre Marriner and (VAR) Neil Swarbrick. “... The big question now is: should we put it into the World Cup?” VAR involves a fifth match official along with an assistant watching the on-pitch action remotely and then drawing the match referee’s attention to officiating mistakes. Death toll in California mudslides expected to rise

LOS ANGELES - The number of those killed by mudslides in California was expected to rise from at least 13 dead but rescue efforts would become easier on Wednesday after the powerful rain storm heads west and skies clear, authorities said.

But only 10 to 15 percent complied with mandatory orders, said Amber Anderson, a spokeswoman for the Santa Barbara County Fire Department. The number of fatalities surpassed the death toll from a California mudslide on Jan. 10, 2005, when 10 people were killed as a hillside gave way in the town of La Conchita, less than 20 miles south of the latest disaster. Last month’s wildfires, the largest in California history, left the area vulnerable to mudslides. The fires burned away grass and shrubs that hold the soil in place and also baked a waxy layer into the earth that prevents water from sinking deeply into the ground. “Farce” - no new start for Britain’s May with reshuffle LONDON - A government reshuffle by British Prime Minister Theresa May was dismissed even by some of her allies on Tuesday as a failure that one said left her attempt to reassert her authority in “smoke and wreckage”. One former minister, George Osborne, sacked by May when she came to power in July 2016, led the criticism, calling the moves a “farce”. But other more loyal members of her governing Conservatives also questioned the prime minister’s ability to put the party back on track for election success after a year of scandals, gaffes and divisions over Brexit. A cabinet reshuffle is meant to offer a chance for a leader to assert authority on a team. May had hoped the limited changes would not only re-energise her domestic agenda but also strengthen her hand in talks to leave the European Union. Instead, it did little more than demonstrate May’s weakness, with the only high-profile moves derailed when one minister quit rather than take a new job and another talked May out of changing his role. May said her reshuffle helped the government look “more like the country it serves”. “It allows a new generation of gifted ministers to step up and make life better for people across the whole UK,” she said in a statement. Indonesian police probe foreign ‘orders’ for child pornography JAKARTA - Indonesian authorities are investigating whether a child pornography ring had links to an international network, police said on Tuesday, after videos of adult women engaged in sexual acts with boys went viral on social media. Police in West Java province said three boys, as young as seven, who figured in the videos are now in the care of social workers. At least five people have been arrested, including the mothers of two of the boys, on suspicion of violating child protection and pornography laws and could face up to 15 years in prison. Police are hunting for one other suspect. “Results of the preliminary investigation show that the director sold the videos to someone in Russia and Canada,” said regional police spokesman Yusri Yunus, adding that the motive of those

involved was to make money. “We are still investigating and coordinating with the national cyber crime unit.” The director received 31 million rupiah ($2,307) to make the videos, media have said. Indonesia has been vulnerable to child pornography and sexual abuse of minors because of poverty and lax enforcement of laws in the past. Authorities stopped 92 convicted Australian paedophiles from entering the country last year, based on immigration data. In a case that shocked Southeast Asia, a British court handed Richard Huckle 22 life sentences in 2016 for abusing up to 200 babies and children, mostly in Malaysia, and sharing images of his crimes on the dark web. Two f-16 fighter aircraft to arrive in east java on friday MAGETAN - Two of the 24 F-16 Fighting Falcon Block 52ID fighter aircraft, received as grants from the United States and scheduled to arrive on December 12, 2017, are now expected at Iswahjudi, Magetan, East Java, on Friday (Jan 12). “The remaining two F-16 fighter aircrafts that are yet to be shipped from the United States are scheduled to arrive on Dec 12,” Commander of Iswahjudi Air Force Base, First Air Commodore Samsul Rizal, remarked on Tuesday. He further explained that the two F-16 fighter aircrafts, or the Fighting Fal were part of the six fighter aircraft, four of which had earlier arrived at the Iswahjudi Air Base. The delivery of the six fighter aircraft are being carried out in stages. Once all 24 fighter aircraft arrive, he revealed that a handover ceremony between the Ministry of Defense and the Indonesian Armed Forces and Indonesian Air Force Headquarters will be held at the Iswahjudi Air Force Base.

“Information released by the Ministry of Defense stated that the handover ceremony of the F-16 fighter aircraft will also be witnessed by representatives from the US government,” he stated. Rizal explained that during the F-16 handover ceremony, all aircraft provided by the United States, both in the No 3 Squadron which based in Iswahjudi Air Force Base and those sent to No 16 Squadron 16 based in Rusmin Nuryadin Air Force Base in Pekanbaru, Riau Province, will be present at the Iswahjudi Airport. As earlier reported, Indonesia had received a grant of 24 F-16 fighter aircraft from the United States, all of which are planned to be included in the Air Squadron 3 of the Iswahjudi Air Base and Air Squadron 16 of the Rusmin Nuryadin Air Base in Pekanbaru. Of this figure, only two fighter aircraft have yet to be delivered following a mechanical issue, and repairs have to be conducted before being sent to Indonesia for operations. (ant)

Indonesian minister urged to stop destroying illegal fishing boats

JAKARTA - Senior government and business officials on Wednesday urged Indonesia’s fisheries minister to stop blowing up foreign boats caught fishing illegally, saying the policy could hurt diplomatic ties and the fisheries industry. Under the popular minister, Susi Pudjiastuti, Indonesia has destroyed hundreds of foreign illegal vessels since 2014, among them Chinese, Thai and Vietnamese boats, in an effort to protect domestic fish stocks and fishermen. But Vice President Jusuf Kalla said the policy could affect relations with other countries. “In the view of the government, it’s enough already,” Kalla said, in comments reported by the daily newspaper Kompas and confirmed by his spokesman. “This concerns our relations with other countries.” In 2015, China expressed “serious concern” when one of its fishing vessels was among 41 blown up by Indonesia. The Indonesian Chamber of Commerce complained on Tuesday that the approach and what it termed a lack of focus on constructive policies had

damaged the fisheries industry, with exports of fishing products declining. “We ask the government to pay attention to the production aspects ... and to raising investment in the sector,” said a senior chamber member, Yugi Prayanto. Pudjiastuti has consistently ranked as Indonesia’s most popular minister since taking office in 2014, largely because of her robust approach to tackling illegal fishing and her rags-to-riches story. The outspoken minister has also won a large following on social media for candid posts and photographs showing her paddle boarding or dancing to the Beatles aboard a ship. A former fisheries entrepreneur, Pudjiastuti defended the policy in a video uploaded to YouTube, saying it was not her “trademark” policy but rather mandated by the law. “This is not an idea ... or hobby of Susi Pudjiastuti or President Jokowi,” she said, using the president’s nickname. “President Jokowi ordered the government to execute the fisheries law so that the massive theft of Indonesia’s fish can end.” The fishing industry suffers losses of nearly 200 billion rupiah ($14.89 million) every year because of illegal fishing, according to Pudjiastuti. labor and capital are fully employed - puts at risk gains in improving living standards and reducing poverty around the world,” the Bank said in its January 2018 Global Economic Prospects. The fastest-growing region in the world, according to the World Bank, is East Asia and the Pacific with China’s economy expected to grow at a 6.4 percent clip this year before slowing to 6.3 percent next year. In India, GDP growth is expected to reach 7.3 percent in 2018 before strengthening slightly in 2019/2020 to 7.5 percent, the World Bank projected. In poorer countries in Africa, Latin America, the Middle East and Asia, economic growth is expected to expand to 5.4 percent

in 2018 as commodity prices firm but not as much as previously expected. Growth in Sub-Saharan Africa is forecast to reach 3.2 percent this year and 3.5 percent in 2019, the Bank said. Ghana is the fastestgrowing economy in Africa with gross domestic product growth seen reaching 8.3 percent in 2018, followed by Ethiopia at 8.2 percent. Habitable homes of residents are taken advantage as an accommodation as well as a place to interact for tourists. His group also introduces typical cuisines to visiting guests, not Western food. Not only that, in the span of a few years Sudaji tourism village has been capable of presenting tourist activities ranging from trekking, spiritual tourism, agro-tourism and cultural performances. Pokdarwis continues to explore the village potential, where the latest is the potential of the river. The local river remaining natural with a fairly heavy flow can be used for rafting adventure. This rafting tour is considered as the first one in North Bali. However, his group is still constrained by equipment of the adrenalin racing adventure. “Yesterday we tested with our self-made equipment, but we still need equipment complying with the standards,” he said. on the time of the implementation of the religious ceremonies to be followed. Supporting artists of this show are at least 3 to 5 people consisting of a puppeteer and one or two pairs of gender gamelan players. As ritual arts, the day puppet show usually takes place around the venue of ceremony without using a special stage. The storyline is adapted to the

ceremony performed. If the staging is performed in Deva Yadnya, the play will feature Kunti Yadnya, Marisuda Bumi and others. Various types of cake are made specifically to be part of ritual, offered to the ancestors, while some others are made deliberately for consumption. However, all the cakes are usually used for offering other than for snacks and on the way round. One of the cakes serving as a part of ritual, but usually presented as the offering, is the iku-iku cake. This round and oval-shaped cake with a flat bottom like a turtle has

a sweet taste and sticky. Sweet taste is prostrated not due to artificial sweetener, but it is from pure sugar. For the base, it uses banana leaf to avoid chemicals. Jaja iku-iku is often used as a snack by farmers served in their mutual assistance. For example, it is served when transplanting paddy seedlings in mutual assistance in the fields. In such a mass activity, it is usually accompanied with the provision of small lunch party. Jaja iku-iku is served as dessert after having the main course. LONDON - Human antibodies made in genetically engineered cows have proved safe in an early stage clinical trial, U.S. scientists said on Wednesday, and could be developed into a treatment for the fatal viral disease, MERS.

MERS, or Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, is a SARS-like viral infection first identified in Saudi Arabia in 2012 that has caused deadly outbreaks in the Middle East as well as sporadic cases around the world. Despite more than five years of waves of infection, no effective treatment or vaccine has been developed against MERS, which has a 35 percent case fatality rate and has so far killed at least 740 people worldwide. More than 80 percent of MERS cases have been reported in Saudi Arabia, according to the World Health Organization. In research published in the Lancet Infectious Diseases journal on Wednesday, scientists found that human antibodies called SAB-301 generated in socalled transchromosomic cattle -- animals with human DNA incorporated into their genome -- were safe in healthy volunteers. The antibodies also persisted for more time than the MERS virus typically remains in the body, the study found, with antibodies still detected in bloodstream after 90 days. This points a way ahead for the antibodies -- which offer immunity against an invading infection -- to be tested in further trials in people infected with MERS,

the researchers said. “This is the first study to show the safety and immune effects of a potential treatment for MERS,” said John Beigel at Leidos Biomedical Research, who coled the U.S. government-funded study. “The data from our study suggest that SAB-301 is safe, and further research into the treatment is warranted.” The idea of using human antibodies has developed in recent years in a variety of severe and emerging diseases, including flu, severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), MERS and Ebola. Blood plasma harvested from people whose immune systems have successfully fought the disease contains the right antibodies and can be given to other patients to help their immune systems fight the virus. But harvesting human plasma is not always easy or swift when a new disease emerges, so scientists turned to the idea of transchromosomic cattle as a way of manufacturing specific antibodies in larger amounts. Transchromosomic cattle have human DNA that codes for human antibodies incorporated into their genome. To make SAB-301, they were injected with a part of the MERS virus, stimulating their immune systems to produce antibodies against it. The antibodies were then extracted from the cattle’s blood and purified. “The process of creating antibody treatments by harvesting antibodies from human donors is slow and often small-scale,” said Beigel. “However, the cattleproduced antibodies could be created as soon as three months.” (rtr)

Further research is needed to know why this happens and how to prevent it, the study team writes in British Journal of Anaesthesia. “I think there’s been a lot of research on mortality and a lot of research on complications, but not too much on how people actually get back to how they perform at home,” lead author Dr. Timothy Gaulton told Reuters Health. “That was a part of the reason that we wanted to look at the outcome, and in general obese patients,” said Gaulton, of the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. It’s important for potential joint surgery patients to know that in some circumstances, because of their age, weight or preoperative functional dependence, they may be at higher risk of getting worse after surgery, he said in a telephone interview. “It’s something that needs to be considered both for the patient and for the surgeon when they make this decision about moving forward with getting a joint surgery,” he said. The researchers studied 2,519 adults over age 61 who had joint surgery for arthritis. About two-thirds of participants had joint replacements. And 45 percent were obese, meaning they had a body mass index (BMI) - a measure of weight relative to height - of 30 or above at the time of their surgery. Before surgery and during the following two years, participants were asked if they had any physical, mental, emotional or memory problems that affected their activities of daily living. These activities could include things like getting out of bed, toileting, bathing and eating. Needing help for any of these tasks was labeled as a dependence disability. About 22 percent of participants reported new or worsening dependence approximately two years after their surgery - including more than one in four obese patients and one in five non-obese patients. Researchers calculated that obese joint surgery patients had a 35 percent higher risk of dependence after surgery compared to non-obese patients. (rtr)

One of them is Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDEs) commonly used as a flame retardant. The PBDE may still be used by the industries of plastics, textiles, conveyance and electronics. “This needs to be our common concern because textiles, transportation, electronics and telematics are the national flagship industries having been established in the National Industrial Development Master Plan 2015-2035,” said the Head of Industry Research and Development Agency, Ministry of Industry, Ngakan Timur Antara, in International Seminar on “Electronic Industrial Waste Management and Waste as Industrial Resources to Support Reducing Releases of PBDEs / POPs” in Sanur, Denpasar, on Monday (Jan. 8). According to Ngakan, economic growth and job creation are caused by many factors where one of them is the industry sector. However, industrial development also has a negative impact on the environment, mainly due to the use of hazardous chemicals as raw materials or auxiliary materials in the production process such as the PBDEs. Actually, Indonesia has ratified the Stockholm Convention related

to the protection of human health and the environment from persistent organic pollutants through the Law No.19/2009 on Ratification of Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs). Under the Stockholm Convention, there are 12 ingredients categorized to be persistent and very dangerous organic pollutants. “Indonesian government needs to improve the policy structure by reducing, limiting or eliminating the use of POPs including PBDEs in the production process as well as optimizing proper waste management,” he added. Ngakan added that one of the methods of waste management that can be adopted is the wasteto-energy approach. In addition to helping reduce waste generation, the approach can also help reduce the use of fossil fuels. In turn, this also supports the government’s commitment in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. “Plastic, textile, conveyance and electronics industries are suggested to use standardized waste treatment technologies. If this is implemented well in Indonesia, certainly it brings in greatest benefits to the sustainability of natural resources, preservation of environmental functions and improvement of people’s welfare,” he explained. SEMARAPURA - After the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) downgraded the dangerous radius of Mount Agung eruption to 6 kilometers, the homecoming traffic of evacuees in Klungkung district continues. 9), the remaining evacuees are only about half of the initial number. Chief Executive Officer of the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Klungkung, Putu Widiada, explained the surviving refugees totally amount to 6,986 people spreading across 37 villages. As estimation, more and more evacuees will return home considering that many of them live outside the radius of 6 kilometers. “Possibly, there are approximately 3,000s people living within the radius of 6 km,” he said.

The measure to enable the evacuees to go home seems not to make them peaceful. At least, this condition is experienced by I Wayan Darta from Duda village, Selat. “Now, we’d like to go home first. Los Angeles prosecutor drops artist’s sex accusation against Polanski LOS ANGELES - Prosecutors in Los Angeles said on Tuesday they declined to pursue criminal charges against film director Roman Polanski after a woman said last fall that he molested her 43 years ago when she was 10 years old. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office was investigating an accusation that Polanski, a long-time fugitive from the United States, committed lewd and lascivious acts with a child and sodomy with a minor, but did not proceed because it was beyond the statute of limitations, spokesman Greg Risling said. The office pegged the date as Jan. 1, 1975 and declined to identify Polanski’s accuser. The prosecutor opened the investigation in December. The accuser, who identified herself online as artist Marianne Barnard, accused Polanski, now 84, in October of having molested her when he photographed her as a naked 10-year-old under an open fur coat in a photo shoot arranged by her mother. “After it happened, I didn’t say anything to anyone,” Barnard said in a post on thepetition.com, where she is seeking signatures urging that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revoke Polanski’s membership. Polanski’s lawyer, Harland Braun, said the incident never happened, adding that because police and prosecutors have stopped looking into the matter, he is pursuing his own investigation in an effort to clear his client. “We have what we believe is a totally fictitious case against Mr. Polanski,” said Braun. Polanski in 1977 admitted to having unlawful sex with a 13year-old girl in Los Angeles and spent 42 days in pre-trial custody. ‘Roseanne’ star says revived show reflects Trump’s America

PASADENA - The March revival of hit 1990s television comedy “Roseanne” will show how a politically divided, working-class American family grapples with daily life and challenges after the election of U.S. President Donald Trump, the show’s stars said on Monday.

Walt Disney Co’s ABC broadcast network is bringing back “Roseanne,” starring Roseanne Barr and John Goodman, for nine episodes starting March 27. In the new episodes, the titular Roseanne, played by Barr, is now a grandmother who voted for Trump and at times clashes with family members and friends with opposing views, the show’s cast and producers said at a Television Critics Association event. The original “Roseanne” aired from 1988 to 1997 and was the most-watched show on U.S. television in 1989 and 1990. It featured a blue-collar family, the Conners,

with overweight parents struggling to get by in the fictional town of Lanford, Illinois. The series was praised for its realistic portrayal of a working-class family in the United States, and Barr said she wanted the revival to also present a true-to-life portrait of a country in which half the voters chose Trump. “It was the working-class people who elected Trump,” Barr said. “I felt that was very real and something that needed to be discussed.” Barr herself has spoken in support of Trump, but the show’s producers said the series does not

advocate a political stance. “There is no agenda on anybody’s part but to get honest feelings out there within a family that’s relateable,” executive producer Bruce Helford said. Many original cast members returned for the revival including Goodman, who plays Roseanne’s husband Dan, and Sara Gilbert, who portrays daughter Darlene. Gilbert said the new episodes show a family “that is divided by politics but still filled with love.” The revival will also deal with topical issues such as opioid addiction and access to healthcare, Helford said. Explosion on Iranian oil tanker forces rescue team to retreat

BEIJING/SEOUL - Rescue crews were forced to retreat from a stricken Iranian oil tanker in the East China Sea on Wednesday following an explosion on the ship as a fire raged for a fourth day after a dramatic collision. The blast happened on board the tanker in the afternoon after rescue crews were dousing the ship with foam in an attempt to put out the fire, China’s Transport Ministry (MOT) said in a statement on Wednesday. The cause and damage to the tanker from the incident were not clear. The ship was carrying condensate, a highly flammable ultra-light crude, to deliver to South Korea when it collided with a Chinese freight ship on Saturday. Dozens of rescue boats from China and South Korea have been battling strong winds, high waves and poisonous fumes to comb a 900-square-nautical-mile (3,100square-kilometre) area for 31 missing sailors and tame the fire, amid growing concerns the listing ship may explode or sink. The tanker Sanchi (IMO:9356608), run by Iran’s top oil shipping operator, National Iranian Tanker Co, collided on Saturday with the CF Crystal (IMO:9497050), carrying grain from the United States, about 160 nautical miles (300 km) off China’s coast near Shanghai. The Sanchi was carrying 136,000 tonnes of condensate, equivalent to about 1 million barrels and worth some $60 million. The Chinese

government said late on Tuesday it had not found a “large-scale” oil leak, and the condensate was burning off or evaporating so quickly that it would leave little residue - less than 1 percent - within five hours of a spill. That reduces the chances of a crude-style oil slick. Iranian officials said there was still a chance of finding survivors among the 31 remaining crew, who are all Iranian nationals except for two Bangladeshi citizens. The body of a crew member was found on Monday in the water near the tanker. “If the crew have been able to reach (...) some place like the engine

room, then the chances of their rescue are high,” said Hassan Qashqavi, a senior Iranian foreign ministry official, according to ISNA. “But if, God forbid, they have been caught up in explosions because of flames inside the ship, then the chance of their rescue is small.” VULNERABLE TO BREAK-UP Authorities and environmentalists worry though the ship is increasingly vulnerable to breaking up and sinking the longer the blaze rages. Still, the ultra light crude is highly volatile when exposed to air and water. South Korea’s Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries warned on Wednesday the tanker could burn for up to one month, potentially expelling the tanker’s bunker fuel, or the heavy fuel oil that powers a ship’s engines and contaminating the waters.

“We believe flames would last for two weeks or a month considering previous cases of oil tank accidents,” said Park Sung-dong, an official at the ministry. Bunker fuel is the dirtiest kind of oil, extremely toxic when spilled, though much less explosive. Fuel oil is relatively easy to contain because volumes are lower and its viscosity means it’s easier to extract from water, but even small volumes can hurt marine life.
