‘Blade Runner 2049’ Fades to $31.5 Million Opening Weekend

LOS ANGELES - “Blade Runner 2049” is heading for a downbeat $31.5 million opening weekend at 4,058 sites in North America.

Sunday’s estimated result throws serious doubt onto what had been high hopes for a box office success story. In one of the most surprising turnarounds in recent years, “Blade Runner 2049” fell far short of expectations, which had been in the $45 million to $50 million range at the start of the weekend amid stellar reviews, strong advance ticket sales, and the revered status of 1982’s original “Blade Runner.” Instead, the film grossed only a moderate $12.7 million on Friday, including $4 million from Thursday night previews. Saturday saw an 11% decline to $11.4 million and Sunday’s projected total was $7.4 million. The key factors for the under-performance were the movie’s 163-minute running time -- which limits the number of showings each day -- plus far less traction among younger moviegoers than anticipated. “The core of enthusiastic and loyal ‘Blade Runner’ fans were over 25 and predominantly male and propelled the film as expected to the top spot, but a lengthy

running time and lesser interest among females made it tougher for the film to reach the original weekend box office projections,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst with comScore. According to PostTrack, males over 25 represented 50% of the audience and females over 25 were 27%, while males under 25 represented 15% of moviegoers and females under 25 were 8%. Males gave the movie an A CinemaScore, while females gave it a B+. Warner Bros. is handling domestic distribution on “Blade Runner 2049,” starring Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford, through its output deal with Alcon Entertainment. Financed by Alcon and Sony and laden with special effects, the film carries a $150 million price tag. Denis Villeneuve helms the sequel film, which is set in a bleak 2049 Los Angeles with Gosling starring as an LAPD officer dealing with replicants seeking freedom. Warner Bros. domestic distribution president Jeff Goldstein said “Blade Runner 2049” had fallen short of expectations in mid-sized and smaller markets along with the South and Midwest, where the running time and Major League Baseball playoffs appeared to have held down attendance. LONDON - “Last Flag Flying”, a comedy-drama about Vietnam war veterans, will resonate with Trump’s America, despite, or perhaps because of, its period setting, actor Bryan Cranston said on Sunday after a screening at the London Film Festival. Set in the United States in December 2003 – when U.S. forces in Iraq were dragging Saddam Hussein out of a “spider hole” - it is the story of three ageing former servicemen who reunite to bury the son of one of them who has been killed in action. With President Donald Trump saying he could “totally destroy” North Korea and characterising a dinner with military commanders as “the calm before the storm”, Cranston said “Last Flag Flying” was a timely reminder of the effect on normal Americans of ill-advised military campaigns. “I think it has a lot of relevance today in the sense that (today) it’s

not clear cut as far as the (what are the) intentions of the government or military,” Cranston, acclaimed for his lead role in the TV drama “Breaking Bad”, told Reuters. “In World War Two, it was the ‘good war’, it was clear and present danger, we had to stop this mad man. Since then, with Vietnam and Iraq, (there are) a lot of questions ... among the troops and the citizens as to if we are doing the right thing and what is the purpose of our being there.” “Last Flag Flying” was produced by Amazon Studios and directed and co-written by Richard Linklater, whose greatest critical acclaim has been for the naturalistic “Before Sunset” trilogy and the 2014 “Boyhood” which won a slew of Oscar nominations. Weakening Nate brings rain, tornado warnings to U.S. South

BILOXI/PASCAGOULA - Hurricane Nate weakened to a tropical depression on Sunday after coming ashore in Mississippi, flooding roads and buildings but sparing the state from catastrophic damages. Maximum sustained winds from Nate, the fourth major storm to hit the United States in less than two months, dropped to 35 miles per hour (55 km per hour) as it moved through Alabama and into Tennessee.

The remnants of the storm spawned tornado warnings in those states and the western portions of North Carolina and South Carolina. It is forecast to bring gusty winds and up to 4 inches (10 cm) of rain to parts of Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York on Monday. The storm made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane, the weakest designation by the U.S. National Hurricane Center. Smoke comes out from Mount Agung

Smoke soars up to 1,500 kilometers above Mt. Agung

The smoke or solfatara coming out from the bottom of the Mount Agung’s crater on Saturday (Oct. 7) at 20:45 soared to a height of 1,500 kilometers. This is the highest smoke seen since the highest mountain in Bali was declared to be in warning status on September 22. The pillar of smoke was triggered by water vapour from heavy rains over the last three days. Division Head of Volcano Mitigation of the PVMBG/BG, for Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), I Gede Suartika, said on Sunday (Oct. 8) that based on the evaluation on October 8, Mount Agung remains in warning status. Up to now, the seismicity remains quite critical. Deep volcanic earthquakes occurred in the range of 800, consisting of 536 deep volcanic earthquakes, 309 shallow volcanic earthquakes and 44 local tectonic earthquakes. As of Sunday morning (Oct. 8) there had

been 91 deep volcanic earthquakes, 66 shallow volcanic and 12 local tectonic earthquakes. Suartika smoke form the crater had indeed reached a height of 1,500 kilometers on Saturday night. In Sunday morning the smoke seen from the north was still nearly as high as the night before. He explained that the seismicity has not indicated a trigger for the occurrence of an eruption. So far, there has not been a change in the earthquakes. If there are continuous

tremors this would indicate an imminent eruption. “The smoke on Saturday night was due to large amounts of rainfall over the past three days. When rainwater fills the bottom of the crater, it heats up and turns onto water vapour. So the solfatara mixes with the water vapour and gas. The color of the smoke remains white and there is no sand or ash”, explained Suartika adding that the smell of sulfur extended some 700 meters form the lip of the crater.

Suartika further explained that the recent heavy rains will not accelerate an eruption. There are two types of volcanic eruptions he said, phreatic and magmatic. Currently Mount Agung appears to be heading toward a magmatic eruption. Since such eruptions are preceded by many earthquakes, the PVMBG/ Bg is making models for an eruption and magmatic impact. “So, here is our estimation and we then extend the radius of disaster-prone areas to 12 kilometers. Phreatic eruption shows the effects of water vapor under the crater leading to a magmatic eruption. So, the sequence is phreatic, phreatomagmatic and then magmatic”, he explained. Head of the Center for Volca-

nology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG), Kasbani, asserted that the warning status of Mount Agung is a common thing. The smoke or solfatara mixed with water vapour caused by the heavy rains and indicates that the volcanic activity is still quite high. “The blowing of white solfatara mixed with water vapour and gas is because there remains an energy supply from below”, he said. Kasbani explained that his division will continue to observe the developments of Mount Agung using incoming data from the devices used to monitor the current condition of the mountain. “The eruption has its time, but is hasn’t happened yet”, explained Kasbani. Gunaksa port looks like Tanah Lot Temple SEMARAPURA — Gunaksa Port in Dawan subdistrict is in a deplorable condition with the revetment and the port’s padmasana shrine having been eroded by the swift streams of the Unda River and the impact of strong waves. The only road that leads to the port has become severely damaged by flooding. The port that was established around the quarry now looks like Tanah Lot Temple – surrounded by water. As seen on Sunday (Oct. 8), the revetment had collapsed on the east

side as had the padmasana shrine. A number of shrines previously standing upright have also collapsed. The swift current of the Unda River streams and ocean waves have caused electrical poles to collapse and damage the land that previsously connected to the port making it impossible to pass through. Shipping Division Head of the Klungkung Transportation Agency, IGN Suarba, with permission from the Agency Head, I Nyoman Sucitra, confrimed that the condition of the

port was dire following the heavy rains of the last two days that caused the Unda River to swell and erode the surrounding area. “We’wnet down to see for ourselves and to take picture. Indeed the the revetment and the shrine have been eroded” he explained. The road access, he explained had been repaired 3 months ago to allow heavy trucks to pass. Unfortunately these repairs did not last long and the road is once again inaccessible.. “The road is broken off again, now there is

no access to the location (port—Ed). We do not dare to walk down to the port as the water is still flowing swiftly”, added Suaba. Such repairs, explained Suaba cannot be handled by the district government as the authority to handle the management and maintenance of the part area lies with the central government and relevant agencies. “ Because we have no authority to deal with it direcly, we have simple reported the matter. The minutes will be sent tomorrow

(Monday- Ed). The details will be reported to the regent and then passed onto the central government”, he said. The port that was built with a budget of about IDR 230 billion could also potentially be hot by cold lava, if Mt. Agung erupts as the Unda River is a likely path for the lava – as witnessed during the eruption of 1963. Preventative measures have been coordinated with the central government”, concluded Suaba. DNA confirms amazing Australian isle insect not extinct after all

WASHINGTON - When black rats invaded Lord Howe Island after the 1918 wreck of the steamship Makambo, they wiped out numerous native species on the small Australian isle in the Tasman Sea including a big, flightless insect that resembled a stick. But the Lord Howe Island stick insect, once declared extinct, still lives. Scientists said on Thursday DNA analysis of museum specimens of the bug and a similar-looking one from an inhospitable volcanic outcrop called Ball’s Pyramid 14 miles (23 km) away confirmed they are the same species. The finding could help pave the way for its reintroduction in the coming years. “The Lord Howe Island stick insect has become emblematic of the fragility of island ecosystems. Unlike most stories involving extinction, this one gives us a unique second chance,” said evolutionary biologist Alexander Mikheyev of the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University in Japan. The glossy-black insect that grow up to six inches (15 cm) in length is nicknamed the “land lobster.” Other stick insects are found around the world, so named because their appearance lets them blend in with trees and bushes to evade predators. As adults, the wingless Lord Howe Island stick insects shelter in trees during daytime and come out at night to eat shrubbery. The bright-green babies are active during daytime. By about 1930, they had vanished on Lord Howe Island, which was

thought to be their only home. There were no land-dwelling mammals there when the rats arrived, and they also vanquished five bird species and 12 other insect species. A rock-climbing ranger made a curious discovery in 2001 on Ball’s Pyramid: a similar-looking insect. Since then, captive breeding programs have begun at the Melbourne Zoo and elsewhere. Because of certain differences between the Ball’s Pyramid insects and the Lord Howe Island insect museum specimens, there was some question about whether they were the same species. “We found what everyone hoped to find, that despite some significant morphological differences, these are indeed the same species,” said Mikheyev, who led the research published in the journal Current Biology. Officials are planning a program to eradicate the invasive rats on Lord Howe Island, which could allow the stick insects to return. “I imagine that maybe a decade from now, people will travel to Lord Howe Island and take night walks, hoping to glimpse this insect,” Mikheyev said. “In maybe 20 years, they could become a ubiquitous sight.” (rtr)

ZURICH - Nuclear proliferation watchdog CTBTO is examining unusual seismic activity in North Korea that took place around 50 km (31 miles) from previous nuclear testing in the isolated country, it said on Saturday. “Analysts looking at unusual #seismic activity of a much smaller magnitude in the #DPRK,” CTBTO Executive Secretary Lassina Zerbo said in a Twitter post. “Korean Peninsula unusual #seismic activity: LAT=41.36 LON=129.76 mb=3.5 About 50km from prior tests. #CTBT Analysts investigating,” he said in a subsequent post. China’s earthquake administration said it had detected a magnitude 3.4 quake in North Korea that was a “suspected explosion”, raising fears that Pyongyang might have conducted another nuclear bomb test. When raining, water with garbage runs onto the road BANGLI — The workmanship of drainage rehabilitation project having been budgeted by the government of Bangli in the main regional budget 2017 is unclear. Until mid-October, there is no serious drainage rehabilitation process. Since the drainage channel has not been worked on, along the Jalan Ngurah Rai, precisely in the south of SMAN 1 Bangli, until now still continues to be a regular flooded area and overflow of garbage when rain flushes Bangli. As seen on Sunday (Oct. 8), the rain flushing the Bangli area on Sunday morning caused the road to be filled with overflowing water. The water flow came from drainage channel in the south of SMAN 1 Bangli high school having been covered with earth material. Other than flooding the shops, offices and homes of residents, the overflowing water of drainage onto the road also made road users difficult to cross. Moreover, the overflowing water caused a motorcyclist to fall in that morning because of trying to break through the flow of water. Related to this matter, a member of Commission III of the Bangli House of Representatives, Dewa Gede Oka, said that to rehabilitate drainage in Bangli town area, the parliament and executive agreed to allocate the fund in the main regional budget 2017. However, his

commission wondered why until now the project has not been accomplished. Dewa Oka admitted that his commission had time to question about the implementation of the project to the Bangli Public Work and Housing Agency (PUPR). As a result, the agency stated if the project is already in preparation to be worked on. “The agency told if the work is delayed due to a problem concerning with shade trees. Another reason is that the agency is still in the process of ordering U-shape drain concrete that will be used for drainage improvement,” said Dewa Oka. In the meantime, Division Head of Highway Construction of the Bangli Public Works and Housing Agency, Putu Wida Gunawan, could not be asked for his confirmation last Sunday. MANGUPURA — Badung Tourism Office began to follow up the discourse of the Indonesia Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) Badung related to the standardization plan of hotel room rates. Moreover, it has summoned a total of 200 hoteliers and restaurateurs last September. This was conveyed by the Head of the Badung Tourism Office, Made Badra, not long ago. According to Badra, it was done in accordance with the mandate of the ministerial regulation in order to have standardization of services including the room rate. The standardization is performed with certification of hotel and restaurant business through the rating of related business. “We also have talked to the industry,” he said. He explained, having been audited, the hotels themselves will be given rating in accordance with the assessment. Otherwise, the tourism office

will evaluate the permit. “It will be clear which category of a particular hotel belongs to, its room rate range and how the service looks like,” he explained. He admitted that such measure is meant to prevent the unfair hotel room rate competition. It will avoid the practice of one-star hotel class providing services of three-star hotel. Surely, it will damage the market price and the tourism itself. To facilitate the certification, the tourism office provides five local auditor consultants related to the public service standards (SLU). “They will help certify the industry,” he said. He targeted that the 200 companies having been coached can be certified. According to him, the standardization is only for star-rated hotels and restaurants. lamben Beach. However, a few days ago there were tourists being desperate to dive in the Tulamben area. They departed by a traditional boat from Amed, but their activities were banned by hamlet chief with the backup of our members,” he explained. In the meantime, a diving guide at Tulamben object, Komang Patra, said that after the threat of Mount Agung eruption, thousands of people turn unemployed. This happens because all hotels in the Tulamben area are closed. So, the people currently relying on their life from tourists can no longer work. On this condition, he asked the government to make a breakthrough by alerting an evacuation team at sea. He asked to allow diving activities in the Tulamben area, but tourists stay in the Amed area. “On that account, it needs to alert the marine evacuation team to save in case the eruption occurs,” he said while stating that people working as fishermen are still going to sea, but in a small amount. TABANAN — Due to heavy rain within past few days, the fingerlings and freshwater fish cultivated by Bentuk Sari fish farming group (Pokdakan) of Yeh Gangga hamlet, Sudimara, Tabanan, were swept away by flood. As a result, the group suffered losses up to tens of millions of rupiahs.

Head of Bentuk Sari fish farming group, Made Sutana, said on Sunday (Oct. 8) that heavy rains flushing Tabanan in the past few days caused floods so the water in the cultivation pond overflowed. Thus, the tilapia fingerlings of about 250,000 heads and tilapia of consumption size weighing 300 kg raised in the pond lost due to swept away. Sutana said it happened on Thursday (Oct. 5). He told that his group suffered losses reaching tens of millions of rupiahs. It is based on the price calculation of tilapia fingerlings with the size of 7-9 cm at IDR 300 per head and the price of tilapia ready for consumption reaching IDR 25,000 per kg. “Actually, the tilapia fingerlings were about to be purchased

and the buyer already gave a down payment of IDR 5 million. It will be spread in Lake Batur, Bangli, to be raised,” said Sutana. Made Sutana explained the drifting incident of the fingerlings and tilapia ready for consumption as swept away by flood was known about 04:00 in the morning. At that time, Sutana came to the pond to check the fish. “When I arrived at the pond, the water from irrigation channel already overflowed into the upper pond, while the pond at lower area was already submerged in water due to overflowing water from the creek beneath it,” he explained. At that time, Sutana immediately took action. He managed to save the fish in the upper pond. Unfortunately, due to the large volume of incoming water it crashed into the lower pond so he was unable to take precautions and could only resign. Sutana has been cultivating fish for approximately 14 years. So far, it is the first flood disaster overwhelming his fish ponds. Kim Yo Jong was named as an alternate member of the politburo within the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea - the opaque, all-powerful party organ where top state affairs are decided, the North’s official media said on Sunday. It makes her only the second woman in patriarchal North Korea to join the exclusive club after Kim Kyong Hui, who held powerful roles when her brother Kim Jong Il ruled the country. “Since she is a female, Kim Jong Un likely does not see her as a threat and a challenge to his leadership,” said Moon Hong-sik, research fellow at the Institute for National Security Strategy. “As the saying goes ‘blood is thicker than water,’ Kim Jong Un thinks Kim Yo Jong can be trusted.” Unlike her aunt, who was pro-

Duterte has enjoyed strong opinion poll numbers since winning the presidency in last year’s elections but heavy scrutiny of his war on drugs, which has killed thousands of Filipinos, appears to have impacted his ratings. Trust and satisfaction in Duterte fell to the lowest of his presidency in the third quarter of this year, a survey showed on Sunday, although sentiment about his leadership remained positive overall. “The honeymoon period of the president is usually for a year, so this is expected,” Duterte’s communications secretary, Martin Andanar, said in a radio interview, adding it should motivate the government to deliver on its overall objectives. The Social Weather Stations survey was conducted between September 23-27, two days after thousands of Filipinos rallied to denounce Duterte’s drugs war and his authoritarian leadership style. The high death toll has stoked international alarm, although domestic polls have shown Filipinos are largely supportive of his tough measures to fight crime and drugs. Police say they have killed 3,900 drug suspects during their anti-narcotics operations and deny executions have taken place, as human rights groups have alleged. China survey puts services growth at 21-mth low, blurs picture of resilient economy

BEIJING - Activity in China’s services sector grew at its slowest pace in 21 months in September as new orders cooled, a private survey showed, blurring the picture of how the economy is performing heading into a key Communist Party Congress. The findings of the Caixin/Markit survey reinforce views that China’s smaller companies are continuing to struggle, while large state-owned giants are apparently reaping most of the benefits from a year-long, government-led construction boom. However, many analysts believe China’s robust industrial rally cannot be sustained much longer, putting pressure on policymakers to finds ways to energize the lacklustre private sector, which accounts for over half of the country’s investment and jobs. The central bank threw a fresh lifeline to smaller firms on Sept. 30 in an attempt to redress that deep structural imbalance, offering an earnings booster to banks if they ramp up lending to more vulnerable sectors of the economy. China is counting on growth in services, particularly high

value-added services in finance and technology, to reduce the economy’s traditional reliance on heavy industry and investment. But Monday’s private survey suggested many services firms are facing a bumpy ride. The Caixin/Markit services purchasing managers’ index (PMI) fell to 50.6 in September, the lowest reading since December 2015 and one of the weakest since the survey began in 2005. A reading above 50 indicates growth, and any lower signals contraction. The index had hit a three-month high in August. To be sure, the private findings were in sharp contrast to official data which showed services activity expanded at the fastest clip since 2014 in September. But an official factory survey showed a similar trend, with big companies seeing strong improvements in business conditions while smaller ones struggled to grow, exposing a key fault line underneath the rosy headline growth numbers. Still, economists expect September data over the next few weeks could show a bounce in activity after a slightly softer August, welcome news for leaders ahead of a twice-a-decade party congress that kicks off on Oct. 18. Even if growth does start to fade, few China watchers see the risk of an economic hard landing. Beijing should easily meet or beat its full-year growth target of around 6.5 percent after the rousing start to the year. “The Chinese economy generally held up well in the third quarter,” Zhengsheng Zhong, director of macroeconomic analysis at CEBM Group, said in a note accompanying the PMI survey. “However, the expansion in both manufacturing and services cooled in September, suggesting downward pressure on economic growth may re-emerge in the fourth quarter.” Separately, China reported on Monday that foreign exchange reserves rose modestly in September for an eighth straight month, and by slightly more than expected, as tighter regulations and a stronger yuan continued to discourage capital outflows. A dramatic slowdown in capital flight - which had been seen as one of the biggest risks to China - has helped boost confidence in the world’s second-largest economy ahead of the party congress, at which President Xi Jinping is expected to consolidate his grip on power. Uber suspends unlicensed service in Norway in change of tack

Uber said on Monday it would suspend its unlicensed service UberPOP in Oslo until Norway introduces new rules, as the U.S. ride-hailing app adopts a more conciliatory tone with national authorities. The move follows a similar one-year suspension in Finland in July to allow a new taxi law to come into effect, however there is no set date for when UberPOP will be reintroduced in Norway. The U.S. ride-hailing company has come under fierce pressure from traditional taxi drivers and regulators across Europe who accuse it of unfair competition and skirting traditional licensing rules. UberPOP has already been suspended in several European

capitals, including Paris and Brussels, and Uber was recently humbled when it lost its licence to operate in London. “We’ve learned the hard way that we must change as a company in order to serve the millions of riders and drivers who rely on us. With our new CEO Dara Khosrowshahi onboard, it’s a new era for Uber,” the company said in a statement. “That’s why it’s now time to pause UberPOP in Norway, in order to relaunch under new regulations.” UberPOP will be paused on Oct. 30, while Uber’s licensed services UberBLACK and UberXXL will continue to operate as normal. Khosrowshahi took the helm of the company in August, replacing co-founder and former boss Travis Kalanick and

has promised change at the $70-billion dollar firm. The company said it was encouraged by developments in Norway such as the government’s sharing economy committee which recommended repealing certain provisions related to taxis and an opinion from the EFTA surveillance authority which said Norway’s restrictions on taxi licences were illegal. “Norway deserves modernized laws that encourage innovation and competition without sacrificing what makes the Norwegian model special,” Uber said. “We hope the government will implement these recommendations soon, so that we can relaunch a new and improved version of the product loved by so many.” UberPOP had around 280,000 users in Oslo and hundreds of drivers. Ceremony for Bali’s water on Lake Tamblingan Every full moon Balinese Hindus pray in their village temples, in recognition and celebration of the celestial cycle of the beautiful rock that reflects the sun’s light. Purnama kapat or ‘fourth full moon’ according to the Balinese calendar is an especially significant full moon as it marks the moment when the sun is directly above the equator and often the arrival of the rainy season. So, last week temples throughout Bali held special ceremonies of thanks for the abundance of nature, including Besakih Temple on the slopes of rumbling Mt. Agung. Displaced devotees were told that they could pray from wherever they are. Devotees of other temples gathered to celebrate the particular graces that have been bestowed upon them with particular prayers going out for the peace of sacred Mount Agung. Gubug Temple on Lake Tamblingan held a a ritual known as pengaturang pengrakih from October 3-6. The moon reflects the sun and of course also effects the flow of water on earth, most notably in relation to the ocean tides. One of Bali’s biggest watersheds is in the north of the island is where the island’s four lakes are all located. Lake Tamblingan is the smallest of these four lakes but is nonetheless a place of great spiritual power and mystery. Today, there are four villages known as catur desa that surround the lake, though traditionally they are considered to be a single entity. The people of the Munduk, Gesing, Gobleg and Umajero are responsible for caring for Lake Tamblingan. Part of this responsibility includes holding ceremonies for the lake and the cycle of water from the mountain down into lakes and rivers and out to the sea where it evaporates back into clouds that rain down on the mountain. Every two years the people of catur desa hold a series of rituals over the course of 4 months that make up a single prolonged ceremony for the purpose of re-establishing harmonious relations with the water. These rituals vary in length and function and location, each serving a particular purpose related to the overarching aim of re-establishing harmony. The pengaturang pengrakih ceremony on Lake Tamblingan involved the people of all four villages bringing offerings to Pura Gubug, where hundreds of people gathered on the lakeshore for the full moon ceremony. After all the villagers had prayed and placed their offerings in the temples, the gamelan players carried their instruments to shore to play

hypnotic rhythms as a small armada of canoes set off into the mist. The six packed canoes carried offerings to the middle of the lake. One of the canoes carried sacred objects that were held up by a priest, while another held an ornamented umbrella and others chimed the genta bell as women chanted softly from the bobbing canoes. Everyone on shore held sticks of incense and flowers up towards the lake, some reciting prayers waiting for the canoes to return. As the canoes and their passengers made their way back to shore, the gamelan music started up again as the sacred objects were quickly ushered back into the temple in a lavish procession followed by more prayers. Everyone then dispersed to various parts of the lakeshore grounds flanked by the two temples to relax, snack and chat for an hour or so. Suddenly the gamelan gongs started up again and a group of about 50 people dressed in white gathered on the shore again, this time they all crouched down and with incense and flowers in hand and prayed in the direction of the ornamented Hulun Danau Tamblingan Temple with the iconic Balinese temple towers known as meru. A moment later the group stood up and turned in unison towards the forest and again crouched down to pray as the gongs continues their melody. As the priests stood up and turned to face the first temple a massive rain cloud burst. WIth torrential rain falling, they continued praying to the four directions. As soon as they finished people rushed to take cover but the downpour turned to sprinkles and soon the priests were heading back into the temple where the gamelan gongs had joined the full orchestra. People from Munduk, Gesing, Gobleg and Umarejo had been coming in turns to bring offerings of flowers, fruit and other food stuff and pray here over the last three days, but now it was only men with a few women who filled the space as it was announced that the offerings on the lake been performed well. Dressed all in white, as is the custom for priests, they sat in meditation for a few moments as the gamelan played. The priest leading the prayer chimed the genta and the gamelan stopped for a few minutes as the priests held up flowers between their fingers in Balinese style prayer. Holy water was sprinkled and distributed to each person as is always done after praying. Before the priests got up however, the

priest leading the prayers asked the gamelan players to play a particular song. As the first few notes of the song played, nothing special happened, but soon one man held his arms up in ecstatic gestures and then another had stood up in the distinct posture of male Balinese dancers and started to move towards the area where the sacred objects had been placed. A yellow cloth was now being tied around another of the priests who had stood up and was swaying with eyes fixed. A crew men rushed over and a black and white checkered cloth was tied around the dancer who was now wandering around energetically in dancer pose. At the other end of the temple yet another man had a small live chicken in his mouth and seemed to be gnawing on the feathers of its wing. He too had a cloth tied around him. As each man fell into trance several other men rushed around him to make sure that everything was alright. It was not long before about 7 men- including the man with the small chicken in his mouth were dancing with rigid gestures in front of the gamelan players. Several women where dancing with them though they seemed to be accompanying them rather being in trance themselves. After a few rather intense minutes, holy water from a young coconut was being sprinkled on the people in trance, bringing them suddenly back to their senses. They sat back down, the music stopped and after a brief prayer, the men gathered their things and cleared the space to make room for the group of devotees waiting at the door of the tempe to give their offerings and pray. The sacred gamelan instrument s were quickly dismantled and covered in cloth to be carried back on foot to their temple of origin in Gobleg along with the sacred objects. Outside the temple people were gathered here and there, chatting and just enjoying the fresh air and peaceful atmosphere. Others were making their way home. As the thick fog descended from the mountains, and the sun started making its way to the horizon, everyone, at their own pace slowly left the sacred space to go and rest and prepare themselves from the next part of the four month ceremony. All the temples large and small between Munduk and Ubud and likely beyond were lavishly decorated and attended by thousands of Balinese Hindus praying for mercy and giving thanks. (kmb)

BARCELONA - The Spanish government and its Catalonia region showed no signs of compromise on Monday, a day after hundreds of thousands of pro-Spain unionists protested in Barcelona against Catalan leaders’ plans to declare independence as early as this week. Spain fears the Catalan parliament could declare independence on Tuesday, when the regional government’s leader is due to speak to the assembly in the wake of a banned referendum on Oct. 1. Catalan officials say people voted overwhelmingly for secession. However, on the eve of Tuesday’s parliamentary session, neither Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy nor Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont showed signs of entering into talks, with each buoyed by large protests on both sides of the independence divide. The Catalan crisis has presented Spain with its biggest political challenge since it became a democracy four decades ago. Losing Catalonia, which has

its own language and culture, is almost unthinkable for Madrid. It would deprive Spain of a fifth of its economic output and more than a quarter of its exports. A stream of Catalonia-based firms, including its two largest banks, have moved their legal bases outside the region. There is widespread opposition to a Catalan breakaway among people in the rest of the country and also among a large section of the Catalan population. The majority of the region’s unionists boycotted the Oct. 1 referendum, which was banned by Madrid and disrupted by a violent police crackdown. The European Union has also shown no interest in an independent Catalonia, despite an appeal by Puigdemont for Brussels to mediate

Senator Corker says Trump risks putting U.S. on path to World War Three WASHINGTON - Republican U.S. Senator Bob Corker warned on Sunday that President Donald Trump risks setting the nation “on the path to World War Three” in an interview with The New York Times, the latest in a series public barbs traded over the day. Trump had blamed his former political ally for the Iran nuclear deal in a series of derisive Twitter posts that drew a sharp riposte from Corker, who chairs the important Senate Foreign Relations Committee. In a sweeping, 25-minute interview, Corker told the newspaper he was alarmed about a president who acts “like he’s doing ‘The Apprentice’ or something” - in a reference to the reality television show that Trump had once hosted. “He concerns me. He would have to concern anyone who cares about our nation,” the senator, who announced his retirement last month, said. Corker dismissed the idea that Trump may be using provocative comments about North Korea to advance U.S. negotiations being conducted by Secretary of State Rex Tillerson by playing “bad cop” to the top diplomat’s “good cop” effort to broker a deal with Pyongyang. “I know he has hurt, in several instances. He’s hurt us as it relates to negotiations that were underway by tweeting things out,” Corker told the paper, which added that Corker did not provide details about negotiations. “A lot of people think that there is some kind of ‘good cop, bad cop’ act underway, but that’s just not true.” Corker had been a national security adviser to Trump during the 2016 presidential campaign and on Trump’s short-list last year for both vice president and secretary of state. Construction of Jakarta-Surabaya train starts in 2018

JAKARTA - Minister of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi stated that the Jakarta-Surabaya semi-fast train project can be started next year. The first phase will be the Jakarta-Semarang section which is expected to be developed for two years. “The last discussion with Vice President Jusuf Kalla concluded that the Jakarta-Surabaya train project will use the existing line and work will start in 2018,” the minister told reporters at Trunojoyo Airport, Sumenep, East Java, on Sunday. President Joko Widodo and his entourage are scheduled to make a working visit to Sumenep with a number of agendas, including a stop-over at Trunojoyo Airport on Sunday. According to the transportation minister, the Semi-high speed train project is currently under study. The study by the Japanese team will be completed at the the end of November. “The project is fast and cheap while at the same time it can resolve many things such as the problem of level crossings in

about Rp20 trillion for the construction of the level crossings. “This amount is lower than the previous calculation of Rp80 trillion,” he said. In the construction of level crossings, both for flyovers and under passes, the minister will cooperate with the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR). “We will share with the Ministry of PUPR for the level crossing construction because PUPR is also concerned,” he said. Decisions taken with regard to the level crossing points, said Sumadi, will later be reported to President Joko Widodo. “The initial estimated cost for the construction of a level crossing is Rp25 billion or about Rp20 trillion for 800 crossings along the Jakarta-Surabaya route,” said Minister Budi Karya Sumadi.(ant)

Pence exits NFL game after players kneel during anthem WASHINGTON - U.S. Vice President Mike Pence walked out of a National Football League game on Sunday after some players knelt during the national anthem, a form of demonstration that began last year in silent protest against police violence toward racial minorities. Pence was attending a game in his home state of Indiana between the Indianapolis Colts and the San Francisco 49ers. When the national anthem was played before the start of the game, some 49ers knelt while some Colts, their arms locked, wore black Tshirts with the words “We Will” on the front and “Stand for equality, justice, unity, respect, dialogue, opportunity” on the back. “I left today’s Colts game because President Trump and I will not dignify any event that disrespects our soldiers, our Flag, or our National Anthem,” Pence said in a statement issued by the White House. Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said after his team’s game on Sunday that he would bench players who disrespect the U.S. flag. “If there is anything that is disrespectful to the flag then we will not play,” Jones told reporters. Asked about Pence’s departure, Jones said: “We cannot in the NFL in any way give the implication that we tolerate disrespecting the flag. “I know the vice president did leave, because in his opinion the teams were,” he said, adding: “There is no question in my mind that the National Football League

and the Dallas Cowboys are going to stand up for the flag.” But the NFL Players Association in a statement defended players’ right to protest. “We should not stifle these discussions and cannot allow our rights to become subservient to the very opinions our Constitution protects,” the association said, adding, in words that borrowed from the national anthem, “that is what makes us the land of the free and the home of the brave.” After Pence’s departure, critics began to question whether he had only attended the game in order to make a production of leaving, pointing out he flew from Las Vegas on Saturday and was then going to fly to California on Sunday evening.
