Anti-hero ‘Deadpool’ gives life to Fox earnings
SAN FRANCISCO - Media group 21st Century Fox, most of which is being sold to Walt Disney Co., on Wednesday topped earnings expectations with help from the latest film devoted to anti-hero “Deadpool.” The company reported a profit of $4.48 billion in the fiscal year that ended June 30, compared with net income of $3 billion the previous year. It credited tax reform in the United States with giving it an accounting gain of $1.5 billion at the end of 2017. The company’s film studio, 20th Century Fox, boasted of winning Academy Awards for six movies -including a best picture Oscar for “The Shape of Water” -- and said it ended the year with “the strong theatrical success” of “Deadpool 2.” The sequel, starring an unkillable, potty-mouthed super hero from Marvel Comics, grossed more than $730 million at theater box offices worldwide, according to the earnings report. Revenue for the recently-ended fiscal year increased seven percent to $30.4 billion, the company said. Adjusted earnings for the company were in line with analyst expectations. Fox shares were down a fraction of a
percent to $45.42 in after-market trades. The company said its profit in the final fiscal quarter was $925 million on revenue that was up 18 percent from the same period a year earlier. “As we move closer to combining our businesses with Disney and establishing new ‘Fox,’ we are convinced that the paths we are creating for our iconic businesses will drive enduring and growing value for our shareholders,” executive chairmen Rupert and Lachlan Murdoch said in the earnings release. A media-entertainment megadeal enabling Disney to take over a large part of the Murdoch family’s 21st Century Fox empire moved a step closer to fruition last month when shareholders

of both firms approved the tie-up. The $71.3 billion deal -- which must still get past regulators -- will give Disney prized assets being sold by Rupert Murdoch’s group, including the Fox studios in Hollywood and important film and television production operations. US cable and entertainment group Comcast has been in a bidding war with Fox for Britishbased pay TV group Sky, of which Fox already owns 39 percent. The big media-entertainment firms are pursuing deals as they seek to slow the rise of streaming media platforms like Netflix and Amazon, and prepare for the entry into the sector of Silicon Valley giants like Google and Facebook. Russia stops Pussy Riot member leaving country MOSCOW - Russian security services on Wednesday prevented Maria Alyokhina of punk protest group Pussy Riot from flying out of the country to perform at a top arts festival, she said. Alyokhina wrote on Facebook that as she was about to depart from Moscow to perform a theatre show based on her book at Britain’s Edinburgh Festival, “at the airport the guys from the FSB border service told me that I’m barred from leaving the country.” At passport control, a border guard said her documents needed extra checks and then an FSB officer
told her she was on a no-fly list, she told the Mediazona website, which reports on political prisoners. She is apparently barred from leaving Russia because she has failed to carry out 140 hours of community service, Russian news agencies reported, citing sources in law enforcement bodies. In July a Moscow court fined her 400,000 rubles ($6,200) for failing to carry out community service sentences handed out for two protests, against security services and the blocking of Telegram messenger service. The crackdown comes after
Pussy Riot members invaded the pitch at the World Cup final last month in what they called a political protest. This led to 15-day sentences for four members. Alyokhina did not take part. Her show Pussy Riot: “Riot Days” is set to open at the Fringe in Edinburgh on Friday and run to August 19. The Pussy Riot member, who served a jail sentence for a performance in a Moscow church, has since carried on with her political activism, most recently protesting in Moscow this week against mistreatment of prisoners. Damage caused by the recent earthquakes to a Hindu temple is pictured in Pemenang, northern Lombok island on August 9, 2018. A strong aftershock struck Indonesia’s Lombok on August 9, causing panic among evacuees sheltering after a devastating earthquake killed more than 160 on the holiday island four days earlier.
Aftershocks rock Indonesia’s Lombok as quake death toll tops 300
The death toll from a devastating earthquake on the Indonesian island of Lombok jumped to 319 Thursday, as strong aftershocks triggered panic among traumatised survivors waiting for aid in the worst-hit regions. The shallow 6.9-magnitude quake Sunday levelled tens of thousands of homes, mosques and businesses across Lombok, with relief agencies only just starting to reach survivors in some of the worst-hit areas four days later. “Our latest update is that 319 people died,” said Indonesia’s chief security minister Wiranto, who like many Indonesians goes by one name, adding that rescue efforts were ongoing and complicated by aftershocks.
Around 1,400 people were seriously injured and more than 150,000 displaced, authorities said earlier. Most of the displaced are sleeping under tents or tarpaulins near their ruined homes or in evacuation shelters that are short of food, clean water and medical help. Makeshift medical facilities have been set up to treat the injured. Survivors of the quake have also been shaken by hundreds of aftershocks, including a shallow 5.9magnitude quake Thursday which
caused people to flee evacuation shelters crying and screaming. Motorcycles parked on the street in northern Lombok’s Tanjung district toppled over and the walls of some nearby buildings collapsed. “We were stuck in the traffic while delivering aid, suddenly it felt like our car was hit from behind, it was so strong,” witness Sri Laksmi told AFP. “People in the street began to panic and got out of their cars, they ran in different directions in the middle of the traffic.” - ‘Exceptionally destructive Authorities and international relief groups have begun organis-
ing aid, but badly damaged roads have slowed efforts to reach survivors in the mountainous north of Lombok, which bore the brunt of the quake. Aid had begun trickling into some of the most isolated regions by midday Thursday, officials said, but many displaced people still lack basic supplies. In some parts of northern Lombok, survivors can be seen standing on the road with cardboard boxes asking for donations and food. “It is already clear that Sunday’s earthquake was exceptionally destructive,” Christopher Rassi, the head of a Red Cross assessment team on Lombok, said in a statement.
“I visited villages yesterday that were completely collapsed.” Workers with heavy machinery are searching the rubble of homes, schools and mosques, with hope of finding any survivors fading. There are fears that two collapsed mosques in north Lombok had been filled with worshippers.
