LOS ANGELES - As HBO’s hit “Game of Thrones” heads “Game of Thrones” is based on. “Of course, Hollywood is Holtowards its concluding seasons, George R. R. Martin, the author behind the medieval fantasy series, has already lined up his next lywood, and nothing is ever certain in development... but I think I hope TV project, a new anthology series called “Wild Cards.” The new sci-fi series was announced by Martin over the weekend and will be based on the “Wild Cards” novels and stories written by numerous authors and curated by Martin and Melinda Snodgrass. The “Wild Cards,” first released in 1987, refer to a small percentage of the population that survived an alien attack and obtained super powers, with characters such as Croyd Crenson, Jetboy, the Four Aces and Dr. Tachyon.

Universal Cable Productions, the network behind shows such as cyber hacking drama “Mr. Robot,” confirmed that it is working to develop a prospective series on “Wild Cards.” No further details were given. Martin said he won’t be working on the series himself as he has an exclusive development deal with HBO, and is writing “The Winds of Winter,” the highly anticipated sixth book in his “A Song of Ice and Fire” novels that

Operations Manager of Tanah Lot tourist attraction, Toya Adnyana, said that the establishment of the new ticket price will be accompanied with the implementation of e-ticketing system for travelers making a visit to the famous tourist attraction offering beautiful beach. However, the realization is still awaiting the study on the implementation of the e-ticketing by third party. “If until November the e-ticketing cannot be implemented, we keep increasing the ticket prices manually. This is the instruction of the management board chairman (regent—Ed),” he said, Monday (Aug. 8). He explained that the new ticket price hike to be enacted is from IDR 30,000 to IDR 60,000 per person for foreign traveler (adult) and from IDR 15,000 to IDR 30,000 per person (child). In the meantime, the ticket price hike for domestic traveler is from IDR 10,000 to IDR 20,000 per person (adult) and from IDR 7,500 to IDR 15,000 per person (child). Regarding the increase, the management has conducted dissemination of information in the field, particularly to travel agencies. For the use of e-ticketing, he has asked the management board to provide training for staff on the application of the new system. “This ticket price hike is possible for tariff adjustment made within the past four years as well as for boosting the previous regionally generated revenue,” he explained. In line with the ticket price hike, the management board of Tanah Lot tourist attraction will also undertake major arrangement and reform to the stalls at the location such as the installation of paving block in the middle lane and the addition of CCTV at three points. “Currently the installation has been made at 24 points and the addition is proposed for the installation in the west area,” he said. Based on the data, the tourist visits to Tanah Lot during the period of January to August 7 is dominated by domestic tourist visits reaching 1,100,617 people or 52 percent. At the same period, the foreign tourist visit is recorded to reach 1,025,123 people or 48 percent. The total number of tourist visit reached 2,125,740 people in 2016. “The target of tourist visit in 2016 amounts to 2,558,210 people. We are optimistic the target can be achieved,” he concluded. Remote control: LoRa offers a cheaper link to the Internet of Things

LAUNCESTON - The future of communications may be 5G, where mobile networks push bandwidth-heavy video to phones and pull data from self-driving cars, but some firms see an alternative: farm irrigation equipment, donation boxes and oysters, connected by a technology called LoRa. LoRa (for Long Range) is among a clutch of narrowband technologies that connect devices cheaply over unlicensed spectrum and vast distances, needing very little power. The catch: they can only send small parcels of data rather than the gigabytes most wired and mobile standards aspire to. But, advocates say, that may be more than enough. “It turns out you don’t need that huge an infrastructure, and it can be driven by small devices that are very smart and not very expensive,” says Mike Cruse, CEO of Definium Technologies, which is building LoRa-based devices for farmers, universities and mines. The so-called Internet of Things (IoT) has long promised to hook up devices, from aircraft to hairdryers, enabling owners to monitor, control and collect data from them remotely. Spending on the IoT will hit $6 trillion between 2015 and 2020, according to PricewaterhouseCoopers.

But the reality has been slow catching up. Ericsson this year almost halved the number of connected devices - including smartphones - it sees by 2020 to 28 billion. Part of what’s holding things back, critics say, is that solutions are too expensive and elaborate for what is needed. Most involve cellular connections, which are either impractical in rural areas or beyond a user’s budget. Take Richard Gardner, who runs a 2,500 hectare (6,178 acre) farm in Tasmania and pays A$1,200 per sensor for a cellular-based soil moisture measuring system. He’s working with Definium to design one costing a tenth of that. “There’s a lot of technology out there that works now, it’s just very expensive. We’ve got something now that we think has better attributes and is cheaper,” says Gardner, who has invested in Definium and says he already has other farmers keen to buy the company’s products.

Batukaang village hopes archeological research can be done

BANGLI — Batukaang village in Kintamani has an abundant heritage in the form of rare archeological objects including a stone sacarphagus. The local government however rarely gives any attnetion to this and other such objects. Because there have been no efforts to store these objects or preserve them, many of the ancinet objects that the villagers come across are left scattered in their gardens.

Making all this possible is LoRa, a narrowband standard adopted by the likes of Cisco and IBM, where the thumbnail-sized radios that send and receive data sell for a dollar or less. Dutch enthusiasts are building a global community of open-source LoRa gateways, called the Things Network. Nodes send and receive messages - about a tenth of the size of an SMS - every couple of minutes to once every few hours. Followers have rolled out their own experimental networks using the community’s software in cities from Colombia to Russia. Founder Wienke Giezeman says a $300 gateway - the router connecting the LoRa nodes to the Internet - will be available next month. Half a dozen would be enough to cover an average-sized city. “This,” he says, “is going to push the next phase of growth.” And LoRa isn’t the only narrowband technology in town. Weightless, a British-based alliance, is one. Another is a proprietary U.S. technology run by a company called Ingenu, as is Sigfox, a French firm, which has raised $150 million from companies including Samsung Electronics. (rtr)

Australia sets up specialist cyber unit to trace terrorism payments

SYDNEY - Australia has set up a cyber-intelligence unit to identify terrorism financing, money laundering and financial fraud online, the government said on Tuesday, because of “unprecedented” threats to national security. The measure expands on a major platform of conservative Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, who narrowly won re-election last month after promising to improve Australia’s cybersecurity and transform the economy into a tech-savvy business hub. Justice Minister Michael Keenan said the new unit, set up under money-tracking agency the Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (AUSTRAC), would investigate online payment platforms and financial cybercrime to crack down on money-laundering and criminal networks. “We know that the use of fraudulent identities continues to be a key enabler of serious and organised crime and terrorism,” Keenan said in a statement. The statement said the new

AUSTRAC unit would work with the Australian and New Zealand government-funded identity support service, ID Care, to target job recruitment scams that crime syndicates used to recruit innocent people to traffic money between jurisdictions. The new unit would also work with the Australian Cybercrime Online Reporting Network to identify patterns and trends that could indicate large-scale financial scams or their methodology, Keenan said. Reuters previously reported that a decision by Australia’s major banks to stop offering overseas remittance services had driven the money transfer business underground, making it harder for the authorities to track. In February, unknown hackers tried to steal nearly $1 billion from the Bangladesh central bank’s account at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, and succeeded in transferring $81 million to four accounts at RCBC in Manila. Headman of Batukaang, I Nyoman Yudana, said on Sunday (Aug. 7) that there are at least three sarcophagi that were accidently found by residents of Batukaang village as they cultivated their land. “The last sarcophagus was discovered around 2004 in the North of the village, where the others were also discovered”, he explained. These ancient objects have been left where they were found as the vilalge still has no special place to store them. “The ancient statues that have been unearthed are kept in the village temple, but because the sarcophogi once held human remains, they cannot be kept in the temple”, explained Yudana. Yudana went on to say that hundreds of statues of gods such as Ganesha have been found, and are estimated to date form the megalithic age. These statues are kept in six different temples: Pura Puseh of Batan Tiying Jero Kelodan and Kaleran, Pancering Jagat, Pucaksari, Shiva Bujangga and Sengambu Temple. Yudana emphasised that although many ancinet heritage objects have been found at Batukaang village, there has been virtually no attention from the Bangli Culture and Tourism Agency so far. Yudana hopes that they can word together to maintain these heritage objects. In order to know more clearly about the history of the sarcophagi and the statues, Batukaang Village will soon be cooperating with Udanaya University’s Departement of Archeology and with wth relevant Provincial agencies. “ We hope that through this cooperation we can learn more about the statues and about the history of our village”, he said. The agreement will be executed by both parties so the dispute is terminated and the relationship between the workers and the company can run harmoniously. “We continue to monitor whether the agreement has been executed or not. Where low-income insurance options improved, so did results

In states that expanded either their Medicaid programs or private insurance options for low-income Americans, beneficiaries used more outpatient and preventive care and less emergency care, and they had better subjective overall health, compared to low-income residents of states with no expanded coverage. All states participate in Medicaid, a partnership with the federal government to provide some insurance coverage to low-income people. The Affordable Care Act would have expanded Medicaid coverage to all Americans under age 65 whose family income is at or below 133 percent of federal poverty guidelines, but only 32 states accepted this plan. Nineteen states did not expand Medicaid coverage. Six of those Arkansas, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Montana, and New Hampshire – instead approved alternative plans to make use of the federal funds for Medicaid expansion. “There’s really a huge difference for healthcare of low income adults,” said lead author Dr. Benjamin D. Sommers of the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and Harvard Medical School in Boston. For the new study, the researchers tracked how health and healthcare changed for low-income residents of three states taking different approaches between 2013 and 2015. Low-income adults in Texas, Kentucky and Arkansas reported their access to primary care, specialty care, medications, use of the emergency department and outpa-

tient care, blood sugar and cholesterol testing, annual checkups, depression and overall health. Kentucky expanded Medicaid, Arkansas used Medicaid funds to purchase insurance for low-income residents on the private market, and Texas did not expand coverage at all. By 2015, the uninsured rate in Kentucky and Arkansas was 22 percent lower than in Texas. Residents with expanded coverage reported fewer skipped medications due to cost, less out of pocket spending and less emergency department use. Those residents also had improvements in diabetes screening, chronic disease care, quality of care and likelihood of reporting overall “excellent health.” There was more private coverage in Arkansas and more Medicaid coverage in Kentucky, but no other notable differences in healthcare between the two states, the researchers reported in JAMA Internal Medicine online August 8. “It didn’t turn out to matter much whether you expanded or used a ‘private option’,” as long as coverage increased, Sommers told Reuters Health by phone. “Some of it is related to the

Govt confirms one more Indonesian abducted in Malaysian water SOLO - Director of Citizen and Legal Entities Protection of the Foreign Affairs Ministry Lalu Muhammad Iqbal has confirmed that several gunmen have abducted an Indonesian captain of a fishing trawler in the Malaysian water. “We have been notified since August 5, that the abducted person is an Indonesian captain of a Malaysian flagged-fishing trawler, and it happened in the Malaysian water,” Iqbal said here on Sunday. Iqbal explained that the fishing trawler was attacked by the gunmen on August 3, at around 4 p.m. local time. There were two other crew members on board when the incident occurred, but the gunmen released them, and they reported the incident to police in Sandakan, Sabah, Malaysia, on August 5. Following the report to the police, Iqbal said the Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur and consulate general in Kota Kinabalu worked closely with the local authorities, the freed crewmen, ship company, and the Philippine authority, to seek more detailed information. “Some information related to the incident and the abductions actors are still different one to another, so we still need to verify it,” Iqbal noted. According to a local newspaper, The Star, Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSC) director Datuk Wan Abdul Bari Wan Khalid confirmed a report had been filed by the owner of the fishing trawler on Saturday, two days after the abduction was said to happen. Khalid also told the newspaper that the incident did not look like the usual kidnapping and a police investigation is on progress. At the present, the two crewmen and the trawler are being held for investigations. Trump seeks a campaign reset with Detroit economic speech

DETROIT - Republican Donald Trump sought to regain momentum for his White House campaign on Monday by proposing sweeping tax breaks, cuts to federal regulations and a revival of the stalled Keystone XL oil pipeline project. The New York businessman used a speech on the economy in Detroit to try to turn the page after a week of missteps in which he came under heavy criticism, including from some in his own party, and rival Democrat Hillary Clinton surged ahead in opinion polls three months ahead of the Nov. 8 election. “I want to jump-start America,” Trump said, “and it won’t even be that hard.” Trump stuck to prepared remarks rather than the freewheeling style that often produces controversial comments at rallies. He kept his cool as some 14 protesters jumped to their feet and shouted at coordinated intervals as he spoke at the Detroit Economic Club. Trump’s remarks, which were repeatedly cheered by the crowd, appeared targeted at both an affluent business community and

working people, in particular those who have suffered from a decline in U.S. manufacturing in cities such as Detroit. He dismissed Clinton as representing “the tired voices of the past.” “We now begin a great national conversation about economic renewal for America,” Trump said. “It’s a conversation about how to make America great again for everyone ... especially for those who have the very least.” Much of the speech reflected Republican talking points and critics said his proposals lacked detail. But Republican operatives and others who saw the speech praised Trump for turning his focus to policy and contrasting his ideas with Clinton’s. The question for Trump now is whether he will be able to keep his campaign on message as Republicans want him to do.

Trump pitched a tax plan that mirrored traditional Republican thinking that lowering taxes and slashing regulation generates economic growth and jobs. He proposed lowering individual and corporate rates and a discounted 10 percent levy for businesses that bring back profits held overseas. Trump’s plan to create new tax deductions for childcare costs raised questions from economists about whether lower-income families would benefit. Many Republicans remain frustrated with his trade vision, which bucks party orthodoxy by calling for a rewrite of major agreements. “My response is good, bad and ugly,” said Lanhee Chen, who was policy director for the 2012 presidential campaign of Republican Mitt Romney. “I think the trade position remains pretty ugly,” he said. “But I understand why they did it. ISTANBUL - After years of being gradually eclipsed as President Tayyip Erdogan forges a “new Turkey” with Islam firmly at its heart, the secular republic’s founder Mustafa Kemal Ataturk has, for now at least, made a comeback in the wake of a failed coup. At a rally of more than a million people in Istanbul on Sunday, Erdogan drew a parallel between the spirit of the young officer who founded modern Turkey in 1923 and the civilians who took to the streets on July 15 to try to stop rogue soldiers in tanks and helicopters from seizing power. “The belief that helped war veteran Mustafa Kemal start and win the war of independence was running through all Turkey’s cities on July 15,” Erdogan told the Istanbul rally, portraits of himself and Ataturk blowing in the breeze on either side of the huge stage. From a leader bent on raising a “pious generation”, it seemed a major gesture of conciliation, an attempt to bridge a deep divide in Turkish society reaching back to 1923, when Ataturk forged the secular republic from the ruins of an Ottoman theocracy and banished Islam from public life. Since the failed coup, Ataturk’s portrait has been hung from the headquarters of the ruling AK Party, founded by Erdogan and rooted in political Islam, and its leaders have repeatedly invoked him - a revered

figure for the country’s secularists - as a symbol of unity. Have faith, it’s getting cleaner, says Bolt

ULUWATU - Suluban Beach is one of Bali’s most unique coasts, concealed by natural limestone formations and accessed via steps and log ramps through narrow gaps in the rock. Canopied by a looming cliff face, this small beach may not be ideal for sunbathers, but serves pro surfers well as a base to paddle out and ride adjacent reef breaks, including around Uluwatu, just to the south. Nicknamed ‘Blue Point’, Suluban Beach lies at the end of Jalan Mamo in the coastal area of Labuan Sait, the same locality shared by famous surf spots Padang Padang and Uluwatu. Unless you’re staying at any of the villas that have recently popped up here (the likes of Blue Point Bay Villas), getting here from popular areas such as Kuta and Jimbaran is best by hotel shuttle, taxi or motorbike. Parking is at the roadside, right before the flight of stairs down to the beach. Parking fees are IDR 5,000 for bikes and IDR 15,000 for cars. From here, you will need to endure a 10-minute walk down a flight of concrete steps. However, you won’t immediately find the beach at the end. Pass rows of locally-run cafés (serving cold Bintangs, light bites and ‘surfer snacks’ including local favourite ‘nasi campur’), surfboard rentals and art shops, with the Single Fin Bar up on your right, and you’ll eventually find the main beach entrance – down a narrow crag.

RIO DE JANEIRO - Katinka Hosszu of Hungary won the women’s Olympic 100 metres backstroke on Monday to claim her second gold of the Rio Games, edging out Kathleen Baker of the United States. Canada’s Kylie Masse and China’s Fu Yuanhui tied for bronze, with the top four separated by just 0.31 seconds. Australian world champion Emily Seebohm, swimming in an outside lane, set the early pace but Hosszu powered her way through the field in the last half of the race to touch the wall in 58.45 seconds. Baker, who qualified fastest for the final, clocked 58.75, to finish 0.01 seconds ahead of Masse and Fu. It was a second gold in Rio for Hosszu, the self-styled ‘Iron Lady’ of swimming, after her world recordbreaking victory in the 400 individual medley on Saturday. “It’s really cool, I can’t believe I’ve won the 100 back,” the 27-year-old told reporters. “I know I’ve done the 100 back in the 400IM a million times and the goal was to make it like second

nature when I came to Rio, which is how it felt. “This time I was fresh and in great shape. I just focussed on the execution and was not worrying about where I came.” Hosszu, who is also swimming in the 200 backstroke, butterfly and medley, had come away empty-handed from three previous Olympics, despite winning five world championships titles. Seebohm, silver medallist in London in 2012, had achieved the secondfastest time in the heats but qualified for the final in seventh. She faded in the closing stages on Monday to finish seventh. And with the Olympics taking place in Brazil, people in her home country are finally getting familiar with her. While Brazil’s other No. 10 — Neymar — is struggling with the men’s team, Marta is seeing success. And the local fans are noticing. For her two goals in a 5-1 victory over Sweden, Marta was showered with cheers. And it wasn’t just her goals, one of which came from the penalty spot. She also displayed stunning footwork that wowed spectators. “Better than Neymar!” the fans at the Olympic Stadium in Rio de Janeiro chanted. “She brings so much passion to the game. So much enthusiasm. And I think her teammates thrive off that passion,” United States goalkeeper Solo said. “We always have to game-plan for her.” With the victory, Brazil assured itself of a spot in the quarterfinals. The United States and Canada also have already secured sports in the knockout round with one more day of group play on Tuesday. Brazilians face South Africa at Amazonia Arena in Manaus, following a match between the United States and Colombia. The event is already a sellout. When Brazil arrived in Manaus on Sunday, a small crowd of about 100 was there to greet the team at the airport. Some chanted for Marta and a few young girls even wore her No. 10 jersey. Marta grew up playing street soccer with the boys in Dois Riachos, a town about 1,250 miles north of Rio de Janeiro. She was only 17 when she appeared at the 2003 World Cup in the United States. For the 2006 season, Marta won the first of an unprecedented five straight FIFA World Player of the Year awards.
