Tobacco Farmers Caught Caterpillars Barehanded Singaraja (Bali Post)-
The tobacco farmers of Buleleng has a new way in tackling caterpillars attacking their plants, not to use more pesticides yet catching them barehanded. Even though it’s slow, it seemed to work better than using pesticides plus its price has gone high and couldn’t be covered by their production budget. Based on several observations in villages of Pemaron, Panji and Tegallinggah last Monday (8/8) these caterpillars have been around since last April during the plantation and comes in the mornings also afternoons. Leaves quality will go down if its eaten. According to one of the farmers, Agung Adnyana, explained these caterpillars are never gone especially during the plants growing phases and with the situation lately the caterpillars are adapted to the pesticides, it seemed using it won’t optimise the plants growth. “With the many caterpillars attacking automatically pesticide spraying schedule has to be done often and eats up our production cost,” he stated.
For that, catching these pests by hand seemed a better solution done every morning of the day. Those that are found on the leaves then piled and destroyed. “It is much cheaper this manual way and with the enough workers to hunt them, the result is quite optimal and so the plants until now grew normally and less holes on leave,” he clarified. The same situation was admitted by a farmer in Panji Village, Sukasada, the caterpillars breeding phase is much quicker than last year not knowing why yet farmers think it’s due to the weather. “It’s the rain that happened until February causing the soils to be moist and this is a good place for them to breed,” the farmer stated. Foreigners carrying drugs must be sentenced severely Jakarta (Bali Post)—
Minister of Culture and Tourism, Jero Wacik, invited both the law enforcement agencies and the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) to search the tourism and entertainment facilities indicated to have the potential of narcotics. “I permit to search the entire cultural and tourism facilities suspected to have narcotics,” he said in Jakarta on Monday (Aug 8). Minister of Culture and Tourism as well as BNN signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the prevention and eradication of drug abuse and illicit distribution (P4GN) among the circles of tourism industry in the country. Wacik invited the law enforcement agencies to crack down and sentence the foreign citizens as well as capture them suspected to have undertaken narcotics transaction in hotels. He said that in 2010 the number of foreign tourists visiting Indonesia reached seven million people and this year was expected to reach 7.7 million. He added that among the people who were coming to In-
donesia, possibly of some of them pretended to be tourists but carrying narcotics. In response to that condition, the airport as the main entrance should be guarded and the drug couriers should be arrested. Meanwhile, the daily executive head (Kalakhar) of BNN, Gories Mere, said on that occasion that it would be sought a strategic plan in order the implementation of P4GN action in hotels or tourist attractions would not disturb the tourist activities. Previously, the Ministry of Women Empowerment and Child Protection (KPPPA) together with the National Narcotics Agency signed a memorandum of understanding on enhancing the
effectiveness of gender mainstreaming and the protection of women and children. “We’ve agreed to work together to improve the effectiveness of gender mainstreaming and the protection of women and children to prevent the drug abuse and illicit distribution,” said Linda. The Minister said that children, teenagers and women were very vulnerable to the hazards of drug abuse. More than 70 percent of the Indonesia’s population consisted of women and children. According to Linda, the joint agreement had no potential to resolve the hazards of drug abuse, but posed an initial measure in protecting women and children. (010)

The ranks of Bali Police are intensively making preparation to undertake security effort ahead of Idul Fitri. Not only during the celebration, will police also make early anticipation. For example, police will prohibit the sale of firecrackers or fireworks that can cause an explosive effect. On that account, the Chief of Bali Police, Inspector General of Police Indra Totoy Herawan also reminded the staff to encourage the function of public guidance and public relations. works there had been a regulation governing it namely the Law No. 9/1932 concerning with Firecrackers and Regulation of National Police Chief (Perkap) No. 2/2008. “Firecrackers with license of import or manufacturing from intelligence and security agency (Baintelkam) of National Police Headquarters had the size of less than 2 inches and do not require any permit of purchase and use,” said Bali Police Chief Totoy, Monday (Aug 8). The firecrackers could be traded to public. However, its distribution in the community would still be supervised. “Later on, when doing the operation, such firecrackers will not need to be confiscated or destroyed because they have complied with the existing rules,” he explained. Meanwhile, the fireworks and firecrackers sizing larger than 2 inches, even up to size 8 inches should have permission of pur-
chase and use. The permit was issued by national police headquarters in this regard the intelligence and security agency. By and large, it was only intended for the interest of show. “I do hope the distribution and use of the fireworks within the jurisdiction of Bali Police should be adjusted to the permit. If the permit has expired, it should be renewed,” he concluded. Furthermore, he said that firecrackers and fireworks that did not have any permit from intelligence and security agency of Police Headquarters were strictly prohibited to be traded, moreover if those firecrackers were intended to be lighted. “If found, such an action can be charged in accordance with the applicable laws,” said Bali Police Chief Totoy while adding that the forbidden ones were of small or large size. Development of villas in the area of Buyan-Tamblingan Ecotourism Park (TWA) in the Dasong Forest, Pancasari Village, Sukasada Subdistrict, which had led to exciting polemic is now really turning dormant. Two wooden mockup buildings that have been built by investor PT Bali Nusa Abadi look unkempt and resemble a haunted house by the lake. The two buildings are made entirely of wood and were established around August 2009. The large rectangular building without room divider is possibly intended for a lobby. Meanwhile, the building located in the east is designated as a home. It remains to look intact, but unkempt. Local residents who happen to be playing or fishing in the vicinity of Lake Buyan can enter freely into the house because the windows and the doors are unlocked. In the meantime, condition of the rectangular building resembling a lobby in the west has been in tatters. Most of the parquet floors have been missing. According to information obtained from local residents around the lakeside it was mentioned that parquets of the building had been stolen. “I heard the wooden floors have been dismantled and stolen,” said a resident who was fishing around the villa. Aside from the two large buildings, there are also three small round buildings at the area. Unfortunately, the three buildings have collapsed. Even, the wooden signboard of the villa placed at the entrance into the villa area has collapsed because no one take cares of it. A resident of Pancasari Village said the villa buildings in the area of Dasong Forest were occasionally visited by foreigners. But the resident claimed not to know whether the guests were regular tourists or representatives of the investor. But obviously, the villa was unkempt. “I do not know whether the project will be resumed or let be dormant,” the resident added. Meanwhile, a legislator of Buleleng House from Pancasari, Sumadra, earlier claimed that the investors had reported if the timber of the villa was stolen. “I indeed once heard if the timber of the villa was stolen. However, I do not know about the continuation of the project,” he said. The villa development project in the region of BuyanTamblingan Ecotourism Park at Dasong, Pancasari Village, had been drawing controversial debate. The polemic began when PT NDA was going to build villas on the block by utilizing the forest area. Aside from being opposed by some circles, governor also rejected the construction of the villas. However, PT NBA still insisted on building the two buildings in the region. Both buildings had also been visited by the Regent of Buleleng Bagiada and the circles of Buleleng House. But after that, the project was unclear and until now the executive and legislature of Buleleng never discussed about the project again. (kmb15)

COLOMBO - Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa landed in China Tuesday in search of support against an aggressive Western push for a probe into war crimes allegations and tighter economic ties in a stormy financial world. Rajapaksa was due to attend the Universiade sporting event in Shenzhen and will later meet President Hu Jintao and Prime Minister Wen Jiabao in Beijing. The Sri Lankan leader Monday said economic cooperation was his focus. China is Sri Lanka’s largest bilateral donor and in June committed $1.5 billion to Sri Lanka’s $6 billion post-war rebuilding plan, having already financed a power plant and new port in Rajapaksa’s southern Hambantota electorate. “They want to make sure the same magnitude of money flows in, in times of insecurity,” said a

BEIRUT — Despite five months of blistering attacks on dissent, the Syrian regime has yet to score a decisive victory against a prodemocracy uprising determined to bring down the country’s brutal dictatorship. President Bashar Assad still has the military muscle to level pockets of resistance, but the conflict has robbed him of almost all international support. Even Saudi Arabia this week called for an end to the bloodshed in Syria, the first of several Arab nations to join the growing chorus against Assad. The Syrian leader is being watched carefully at home and abroad to see how long his iron regime — which is still strong but wobbling — will continue to use tanks, snipers and security forces on hundreds of thousands of fervent, overwhelmingly young protesters who keep coming back for more. “Syria is not burying the revolution,” said Nabil Bou Monsef, a senior analyst at the Arabic-language An-Nahar newspaper. “Protests are resuming everywhere, even in areas that were subject to crackdowns.” He added: “It is difficult for one of the sides to win. Syria has entered a war of attrition between the regime and the opposition.” There is little to stop Assad from calling upon the scorched-earth tactics that have kept his family in power for more than 40 years. A longtime pariah, Syria grew accustomed to shrugging off the world’s reproach long before the regime started shooting unarmed protesters five months ago. A military intervention has been all but ruled out, given the quagmire in Libya and the lack

Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

SEOUL - The world’s most closed country North Korea has nothing to reform or open up, the ruling party’s newspaper reported on Tuesday, accusing the United States of trying to impose its own ways to stifle socialism. But in a rare concession, the Worker’s Party official Rodong Sinmun newspaper, indirectly admitted something the rest of the world has been saying for decades: its economy is in trouble. “‘Reform’ and ‘opening’ much touted by the imperialists and reactionaries are not ‘a remedy’ for the DPRK to weather its economic difficulties or to revitalize its economy,” the paper said, referring to the North by its acronym. The North’s centrallyplanned economy, which only a few decades ago was stronger than its southern neighbor, has gone downhill after the disintegration of the Soviet Union in 1991. Yet, the North has steadfastly stood by its policy of juche, or selfreliance, even as the rest of the communist world bowed to capitalism. Juche was the brainchild of the state’s founder Kim Il-sung who pressed
ahead with his ideology from the 1950s espousing “the ability to act independently without regard to outside interference.” Further isolating the North, the outside world has imposed economic sanctions for its pursuit of nuclear weapons and long-range missiles. But the United States and South Korea are not alone in calling for the North to change its economic ways. Its main benefactor, and only powerful friend, China also wants the North to open up. China, which has surged to become the world’s second largest economy after adopting “socialism with Chinese characteristics,” or con-
trolled capitalism, wants the North to do the same. There have been signs that change is in the air, with the North pressing on this year with the creation of special economic zones to attract foreign investment and boost trade. Mt Marapi shows volcanic activity again Antara
PADANG - Mt Marapi in West Sumatra again showed volcanic activity spewing white smoke up to 100 meters into the sky from 6am to 9am on Monday, observers said. Marapi monitoring staff Soeparno said to ANTARA News here on Monday that the thick white smoke was seen billowing into the sky but no volcanic materials had been produced. “Mt Marapi only produced smoke unlike before when it also produced volcanic materials,” he said. The danger status of the volcano however is still maintained at Level II. “We call on people especially those living around the mountain area to remain alert because the mountain`s activity is unpredictable,” he said.
The mountain located between Tanah Data and Agam districts in West Sumatra has been active since 9am on August 3, 2011. It has spewed volcanic ash as high as 1,000 meter causing ash rain in a number of districts such as Agam, Tanah Datar, Pariaman, Padangpariaman and Padangpanjang. The ash has also covered hectares of vegetable fields. On August 6 at around 8am the mountain again spewed thick ash as high as 300 meter from its crater. Until now the Mt Marapi monitoring post has recorded dozens of explosions. The mountain area is a conservation area and from the 18th century to 2008 a total of 454 explosions have been recorded from the mountain, 50 of them in a large scale. Many people like to climb the mountain during holiday or ahead of the new year.
ExxonMobil to sell gas assets in Indonesia Agence France-Presse
US energy giant ExxonMobil said Monday that it was selling its stake in a cluster of natural gas assets in Indonesia which have been at the heart of a long-running human rights lawsuit. The assets include gas fields in Indonesia’s resource-rich Aceh province, which was the site of a long-running conflict between the Indonesian government and separatist rebels. “ExxonMobil is marketing the shares it holds in three companies associated with the Aceh gas and LNG (liquefied natural gas) producing operation in Indonesia,” the company said in a statement. “The marketing does not involve any other ExxonMobil projects or interests in Indonesia,” it added.
One of the assets being sold is ExxonMobil Oil Indonesia, which was named a defendant in a lawsuit by 11 villagers who claim that ExxonMobil’s security forces committed torture, rape and murder while protecting the company’s gas projects. The company has rejected the allegations of the villagers, who first filed their lawsuit in 2001. In July, a US federal court allowed the lawsuit to go forward, the latest twist in a lengthy legal battle. ExxonMobil did not mention the lawsuit in its statement and said that its decision to sell the assets was “consistent with ExxonMobil’s longstanding practice of continually reviewing assets for their contribution to ExxonMobil’s operating and financial objectives”. Bali Today Singaporeans to Bali up 34.19 percent Antara
DENPASAR - Some 55,668 Singapore tourists came to Bali in the first semester of 2011, a 34.19 percent increase compared to only 41,483 in last year‘s same period. “The significant increase raised the island republic to seventh from ninth position of the ten countries with the highest number of tourists coming the island paradise,” head of Bali`s central bureau of statistics (BPS) Gede Suarsa said here on Monday. He said last year 97,402 Singaporeans enjoyed the unique and beautiful arts and culture as well as nature of the island paradise, while last year there were only 55,992 people, and this year their number increased 73.96 percent. “Singapore has become one of the potential markets of Bali`s tourism with a good prospect of increase in the coming years,” Gede Suarsa said. He added most Singaporeans to Bali came by plane at Ngurah Rai airport straight from their country, and only eight came by yachts. Singapore contributed 4.27 pct of the 1.30 million foreign tourists to Bali in the first semester of 2011, a
10.46 pct increase compared to last year‘s only 1.18 million in the same period. Gede Suarsa added that eight of the ten countries with the biggest number of tourists to Bali had an increased number of tourists, and only two declined. The eight countries are Australia (up 29.33 pct from 278,049 to 348,489), China up 8.29 pct from 98,258 to 106,400, and Malaysia 20.56 pct from 69,251 to 83,491, South Korea 0.99 pct from 59,384 to 59,971, UK 25.86 pct from 38,526 to 48,489, France 7.73 pct from 42,211 to 45,473, and Americans 24.15 pct from 33,268 to 41,303. The two countries whose peoples have become less interested in Bali are Japan with a drop of 26 ct from 119,731 in the first six months of last year to 88,605 this year‘s same period, and Taiwan 0.35 pct drop from 65,589 to 65,360, he said.

After receiving his winner’s check for Rp 50 million (almost $6,000 USD) on the podium as the sun was setting over a still pumping Indian Ocean, Wilson said, “This is the best win I have ever had, hands down. I truthfully didn’t give myself much of a chance to win today. It’s a left, and there were some of the best tube riders in the world out there, guys I have seen take down WCT surfers, so I was just out there thinking that I would relax and just go for some big barrels and have fun.” It worked to perfection. With three, (well two and a half to be precise as Wilson is half Australian and half Indonesian) Indonesian surfers and one Australian out in epic 4-6 foot mid-tide Padang-Padang, Wilson posted first a 9.5 point barrel ride

Balinese Culture Batubulan as Barong Destination When hearing about the Barong Dance, our minds will certainly point to Batubulan Village, Sukawati, Gianyar. The nickname adheres to the village located about 6 km from Denpasar because it has become the center of Barong and Calonarang performance. These Balinese traditional art performances are held every day, from the morning until late afternoon. Most of the supporters are natural artists who are also working as farmers and craftsmen. “Batubulan Village has drawn a great attention of the world tourists since 1930’s because there was as a staging of Barong Dance at Tegaltamu, Denjalan and Pagutan,” said I Dewa Gede Sumertha, in the sidelines of assessment of Tourism Awareness Group (Pokdarwis) at Batubulan Village by the Assessor Team of Bali Tourism Awareness Group on Tuesday (Aug 2). Blissful Flavor from the Sea Delicacy of seafood can conjure up your appetite to ask for again and again. Armed with excellent ingredient and blended with appropriate proportion of spices, it will make the serving more glorious and special. When you plan to travel to Bali, probably one thing comes to your mind, what good food the region offers. Each region has its own typical nature and unique tradition of cuisine. Balinese people known as religious community have a variety of food related to their rituals. One of them is satay. To fill in their oblation in the ritual activities, they prepare twisted satay with minced meat or skewer satay with sliced meat. In terms of its ingredient, the common satay used to fill in the oblation is that made of fork and chicken. Meanwhile, satay for consumption is not only made of chicken and fork. However, they creatively keep on finding out some other new ingredients. Up to these days, there are satays made of shrimp, snail, gourami and tuna. In harmony with the passage of time, local people progressively like the seafood (tuna) satay. Vendors of this satay can be found at roadsides, traditional markets and outermost courtyards or parking lots of temple during the temple anniversary. Even, in socio-religious activities like wedding or tooth filing ceremony, this satay is served to enrich the choice of the existing menus. This tuna satay delicacy takes advantage of the Balinese complete spices. They comprise 8 cloves of shallot, 3 cloves of garlic, small chili (2), large chili (1), grounded lemongrass (1 stalk), candlenut (2), pepper (1/2 tsp), coriander (1/2 tsp), ginger, galangal and turmeric (respectively 1 slice), palm sugar (1 tbsp), salt (1 tsp), squeeze of lime (1 tbsp) and 10 stalks of lemongrass for skewer. First of all, cleanse thoroughly the tuna flesh and then smear it by the squeeze of lime. Afterward, take aside for some 10 minutes and then grind it until tender. Secondly, prepare the spices by grinding them well, too. Take the tender tuna flesh, ground spices, salt, palm sugar and then mix them together evenly. Thirdly, take a stalk of lemongrass and some flesh batter. Twist the batter around the lemongrass skewer while pressing. Do the same until the batter runs out. BANGKOK — World stock markets stabilized Tuesday after a day of dramatic plunges as futures pointed to a measure of calm returning to Wall Street following the Dow’s sixth-worst decline in the last 112 years. To be sure, investors remained on edge amid fears of a possible global recession. But by late afternoon, major Asian indexes had pulled back from a dizzying tailspin earlier in the day. Key European bourses opened higher. Futures suggested U.S. stocks would recuperate Tuesday. Dow futures were up 307 points, or 2.9 percent, at 11,032 and broader S&P 500 futures added 33.70 points, or 3 percent, to 1,145.50. In Europe, Britain’s FTSE 100 was up 0.7 percent at 5,103. Germany’s DAX rose 1.5 percent at 6,009 and the CAC-40 in Paris jumped 2.1 percent at 3,191. Some analysts said short covering — when traders are forced to buy stock after having earlier sold borrowed shares in a bet that the market would fall — may have stanched the flow of money out of equities earlier in the day. Short covering generally causes stocks to go up. “Fear and anxiety ruled the morning session with broad based capitulation giving way to some mild buying and serious short covering this afternoon,” Ben Potter, market strategist at IG Markets in Melbourne, said in a research note. South Korea’s Kospi lost 3.6 percent to 1,801.35 after plummeting nearly 10 percent in the morning. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng, which fell as much as 7 percent, was down 2.3 percent at 20,024.93. Japan’s Nikkei 225 stock average pulled back from a fall of more than 4 percent to close 1.7 percent lower at 8,944.48 — its lowest closing since March 15 — just days after the earthquake and tsunami disasters. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 index moved into positive territory — closing up 1.2 percent at 4,034.80 — while mainland China’s key indexes fell modestly. The big moves, which added to sharp losses in the past few
days, came after the Dow Jones industrials fell 634.76 points on Monday. It was Wall Street’s first day of trading after Standard & Poor’s downgrade of the U.S. credit rating — which jolted the global financial system and reinforced anxiety that the U.S. economic recovery is stalling. “It’s still very hard to predict how the U.S. market will do,” said Jackson Wong, vice president of Tanrich Securities in Hong Kong. “When the dust settles, if the situation doesn’t get worse in the U.S. or Europe, the situation will rebound. But the U.S. has to stabilize.” Worries about the U.S. economic recovery have been building since the government said that economic growth was far weaker in the first half of 2011 than economists expected. Intensifying concerns were reports showing that the manufacturing and services industries barely grew in July, although job growth was better than economists expected last month. Investors are also worried that Italy and Spain could become the next European countries to have trouble repaying their debts. Greece, Ireland and Portugal have already received bailout loans because of Europe’s 21month-old debt crisis. The fears have pushed investors to shun Spanish and Italian bonds, which have led to higher yields and in even higher borrowing costs for the two countries. The European Central Bank stepped in Monday and bought billions of euros worth of their bonds. The move helped to lower yields on Spanish and Italian bonds, at least temporarily. Benchmark oil for September delivery traded at $79.47 on the New York Mercantile Exchange after falling to $75.71, its lowest since September 2010. The contract settled at $81.31 per barrel on the Nymex on Monday.

At the very least, the central bank is expected to acknowledge all the adverse things that have occurred since its policymaking committee last met in June. But many private economists say they believe that the situation has grown so dark in recent days that Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke and his colleagues will be forced to do more. On Monday, the Dow Jones industrial average suffered its sixthworst point drop in history, falling 634.76 points. That decline came after credit rating agency Standard & Poor’s on Friday downgraded the United States’ long-term debt because of what it saw as political gridlock that is preventing Washington from making meaningful cuts in the country’s soaring budget deficits. Adding to all the uncertainty, Europe is facing huge debt problems of its own. European officials are scrambling to prevent Italy and Spain from being consumed by a 21-month debt crisis that continues to roil global markets and has already forced Greece, Ireland and Portugal to seek large bailouts. Bernanke and Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner participated in an emergency conference call over the weekend with their colleagues from the Group of Seven rich industrial countries. The G-7 issued a statement pledging to take “all necessary measures to support financial stability and growth.” Many economists say they believe Bernanke and his Fed colleagues should follow that pledge with concrete action when they hold their regular meeting Tuesday, given all the threats to the economy at present. “I don’t think the Fed can stand by,” said Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody’s Analytics. “This

On June 30, the Fed ended a $600 billion bond buying program, its second such effort, but it pledged to keep its holdings of those bonds constant until the economy started to improve. Many investors would like to see the Fed launch a third round of bond buying. But the program has triggered a sharp debate inside the Fed about whether further bond purchases could set the stage for inflation down the road. “There will be a high hurdle for considering a third round of bond buying,” said David Jones, chief economist at DMJ Advisors, a Denver economic consulting firm. “Fed officials who opposed the second round will argue that the Fed has done all it can to help the economy and anything more will risk higher inflation down the road.” Bernanke this year made an historic change by scheduling news conferences after four of the Fed’s eight policy meetings each year, but the session Tuesday is not one of those.

Judge may allow ‘Hurt Locker’ lawsuit to continue Associated Press Writer
LOS ANGELES — A federal judge has indicated she is leaning toward dismissing most of an Iraq war veteran’s lawsuit against the makers of “The Hurt Locker” but may allow him to pursue his key claim that the Oscar-winning film is based on his life. The producers, director and screenwriter of the movie had been seeking an outright dismissal of Sgt. Jeffrey Sarver’s lawsuit, but U.S. District Judge Jacqueline Nguyen indicated in a tentative ruling that she may allow him to pursue a misappropriation of name and likeness claim. Her draft ruling indicated that she plans to dismiss Sarver’s claims of defamation, breach of contract and intentional infliction of emotional distress. Sarver sued in March 2010, days before it went on to win six Academy Awards, including for best picture and honors for director Kathryn Bigelow
and screenwriter Mark Boal. Boal was embedded with Sarver’s unit in Iraq and spent a month profiling him for a story he wrote for Playboy magazine titled “The Man in the Bomb Suit.” The sergeant claims Boal had no right use his life as a template for “Hurt Locker.” Boal, Bigelow and the film’s producers have denied Sarver is the basis for the film. Sarver’s attorney, Todd J. Weglarz, said that if Nguyen’s tentative ruling stands, said the misappropriation claim “is the essence of this case.” Attorneys for Boal, Bigelow and the film’s producers urged Nguyen to reconsider her initial ruling, ar-
guing that “The Hurt Locker” bore some resemblance to Sarver’s experience, but that it contained numerous creative elements that made it deserving of First Amendment protection. If Sarver were allowed to continue the case, which he first filed in New Jersey, it could have a chilling effect on other films based on real-world events, attorneys for the filmmakers argued. “That’s going to directly impact artists, directors, filmmakers in the future,” said Jeremiah Reynolds, an attorney for Bigelow and Boal. Summit Entertainment attorney David Halberstadter said most of the similarities between Sarver and the film’s protagonist played by Jeremy Renner were elements common to most soldiers, and the film included numerous scenes that Boal never witnessed Sarver performed. CANADIAN, Texas — In a muddy pile of sand where a pond once flowed in the Texas Panhandle, dead fish, their flesh already decayed and feasted on by maggots, lie with their mouths open. Nearby, deer munch on the equivalent of vegetative junk food and wild turkeys nibble on red harvester ants — certainly not their first choice for lunch. As the state struggles with the worst one-year drought in its history, entire ecosystems, from the smallest insects to the largest predators, are struggling for survival. The foundations of their habitats — rivers, springs, creeks, streams and lakes — have turned into dry sand, wet mud, trickling springs or, in the best case, large puddles. “It has a compound effect on a multitude of species and organisms and habitat types because of the way that it’s chained and linked to-
gether,” said Jeff Bonner, a wildlife biologist with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Since January, Texas has only gotten about 6 inches of rain, compared to a norm of about 13 inches, making it the most severe one-year drought on record. Last week, the U.S. Climate Prediction Center said the La Nina weather pattern blamed for the lack of rain might be back soon, and if that happens, the dry spell would almost certainly extend into 2012. The extreme dry conditions,
which have extended into parts of the Plains including Oklahoma and Kansas, have been made worse by week after week of triple-digit temperatures that have caused reservoirs to evaporate, crops to wither and animals and fish to die. Already, some rivers and lakes are at lows not seen since the 1950s — the decade when Texas suffered its worst drought in recorded history. And in some cases, bodies of water are at their lowest points ever, said Joseph Capesius, chief of the Austin field unit for the U.S. Geological Survey. Of the state’s 3,700 streams, 15 major rivers and more than 200 reservoirs at least seven reservoirs are effectively empty and more than half of the streams and rivers are at below normal flow rates.
IN SEPTEMBER of 2010, ULTra PRT, a manufacturer of electric pod cars, and officials at the Heathrow Airport began operational testing on pods that transport visitors to the airport from the terminal to the parking lot. After successful tests, passenger service began in April of this year. Twenty-two pods have replaced 2 diesel-powered buses that usually made over 200 trips a day between the lots and the terminals. The pods travel on designated routes and don’t interfere with traffic moving into the lots. Each pod takes about 5 to 6 minutes to travel the 1.2 miles from the terminal to the car park and all the pods collectively transport about 800 passengers a day. Each pod can carry between four to six passengers as well as luggage. The pods top out at about 25 miles per hour and can operate during inclement weather including light to moderate snowfall. Heathrow officials claim that the reliability of the cars is around 95 percent an they require little maintenance. When a visitor to the airport enters the vehicle, they choose a destination from a touchscreen. This means that the vehicles only operate when a user gives a command instead of wasting electricity while moving in a loop. Users can also choose to share the pod with other travelers and choose multiple destinations along the route. Similar to a monorail system, the vehicles use an automated voice on the speaker system to inform the passenger when getting close to the destination. Based off continued success with the electric pods at Heathrow Airport, ULTra PRT hopes that businesses and governments will invest in similar systems for office parks and dense urban areas. Cost per mile for installation of the system will run a company between $7 to $15 million. ULTra PRT claims that the electric pods are 50 percent more efficient than buses or trams and between 70 to 90 percent more efficient than operating automobiles.

LONDON — Police ordered soccer clubs in London to postpone matches as violence and looting spread across the British capital Monday for a third night with buildings being set ablaze. As police struggled to contain the spiraling disorder, League Cup matches due to take place at West Ham and Charlton on Tuesday were postponed due to security resources being stretched. England’s friendly against the Netherlands on Wednesday at Wembley Stadium in north London is also under threat, although officials will meet with police 24 hours before the match to discuss the situation. West Ham, though, said police told it to postpone the League Cup match against Aldershot on Tuesday because “all major public events in London were to be rearranged.” The east London club said it was “because of the need to focus police resources elsewhere.” “Whilst neither the club or police anticipate any issues around the game itself, the club has to comply with the police request,” West Ham said. South London side Charlton said its cup match against Reading was being called off “on safety grounds” on advice from the police. The violence, which is unre-
lated to any soccer issues, began late Saturday near Tottenham’s ground in north London when a peaceful protest against the fatal police shooting of a man in disputed circumstances degenerated into a rampage. The damage at Tottenham’s White Hart Lane stadium was limited to a ticket office, which remains closed. But Tottenham announced that stadium tours have been canceled for “safety reasons,” while the neighborhood’s main shopping street remains cordoned off on Monday, with steam still rising from burnt-out buildings. Wawrinka, who won the 2008 Olympic doubles gold medal alongside Federer, said that while he wouldn’t go so far as to give him a present he has the utmost respect for his compatriot as a player and a friend. “I”ve known him since I was 16. China’s youngest new hope for the world men’s singles title, Chen Long, suffered a sensational opening day setback against an outsider in the first round of the world championships’ here at Wembley Arena on Monday. Chen, the 22-year-old fifth seed from Hubei, failed to convert three match points in losing 21-19, 8-21, 27-25, to Kevin Cordon, a Guatemalan ranked outside the top 30. Chen was also angry at twice losing vital points in the closing stages when he was adjudged to have made contact with the shuttle on the wrong side of the net. After the second mishap, which put him 15-17 down in the deciding game, Chen walked frenziedly in circles, and complained to the umpire, causing a minute’s delay before resumption. Much of the time Cordon played Chen at the net, believing the Chinese player was fearful of lifting the shuttle and giving him opportunities for his deceptive left-handed smash. “I had confidence to play my best game,” Cordon said. “I didn’t think about winning or losing, I just thought about playing my best. That’s why I won.” Chen was philosophical. “It’s normal because I am still young,” he said. “It’s my first world championships. After this I have the chance to get more experience.”

AKRON, Ohio — LeBron James stood before 360 thirdgraders on Monday, telling them their futures are bright. Plenty of ominous signs notwithstanding, he believes the same is true for the NBA. In an interview with The Associated Press, the Miami Heat forward said he is not considering offers to play internationally during the NBA lockout — with one catch. He’s committed to the 2012 Olympics and trying to help the United States defend the gold medal he helped win at the Beijing Games. “I’m optimistic that we will have a season this year,” James said. “Very optimistic.” A little anxious, too. He’s working out twice a day, trying to erase some of the sting that’s still there after the Heat lost to the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA finals. “Right now I’ve just been
focusing on being a better player, working on my game every single day,” James said at a news conference before the AP interview. “Like I said, the Dallas Mavericks were a great team and they deserved to win that championship. And I’ll just use that as motivation coming into this season.” He’s also trying to deliver on his vow to be even better whenever the Heat resume play, saying he’s been in Houston at times this offseason to learn post play from one of the game’s all-time greats, former Rockets star Hakeem Olajuwon. “I look at what he was able to do throughout his career,” James said. “Unbelievable talent. Multiple champion. Just to see how he was able to dominate in the low post, for me as an individual, I just try to look at some of the things I feel I need to get better at and hit home at it. Mexico eyeing Formula 1 grand prix MEXICO is working on a plan to bring a Formula 1 grand prix back to the country after a hiatus of nearly 20 years. Mexican entertainment company CIE is working in conjunction with Carlos Slim Domit, the son of Carlos Slim, the world’s richest man, to get Mexico back on the Formula 1 calendar. “It’s being studied,” Slim Domit told the Reuters news agency. Mexico has hosted 15 world championship grands prix, first from 1963 to 1970 and then again from 1986 to 1992. The Hermanos Rodriguez circuit, which hosted all the Formula 1 races and is operated by CIE, is being considered as one of the possible venues, although it
would need an upgrade to be up to GP standards. According to Reuters, another option could be a new street circuit in Guadalajara. The country has its first Formula 1 driver since 1981 in Sergio Perez, the Sauber racer making his grand prix debut this year. FIA president Jean Todt suggested last week Mexico would be welcome to the Formula 1 calendar. “Today Mexico has a strong economy and I am convinced that in the future this will be possible,” Todt told a news conference in Mexico City according to Reuters. “We know that racing is costly. There are a series of criteria that need to be met for the event, most importantly security.”
Stoner out to increase lead in Brno MotoGP championship leader Casey Stoner believes that he is in a strong position to extend his points advantage over rival and reigning champion Jorge Lorenzo, with the Honda expected to suit the swooping nature of the Brno layout this weekend. Stoner heads into this weekend’s Czech GP with a 20-point lead over Lorenzo following the Australian’s victory over the Spaniard in the US GP last month, and said he went in the summer break boosted by his dominant performance at Laguna Seca. “Now I feel relaxed and ready for the second half of the season,” he said. “I’m looking forward to going to Brno, it’s a circuit I’ve always enjoyed and I believe with the results we’ve had in the past years we can expect to have a good race there. “I’ve seen that the Honda can be very competitive at all circuits this year so I’m sure we will also be strong in Brno.” Stoner hasn’t written off the challenge from Lorenzo, who won the event last year which was dominated by Yamaha. “The fact that it’s very fast and flowing has helped the Yamahas in the past seasons and I think Jorge will be strong there, so I will be watching for him,” said Stoner. “We’ll be working on overcoming some of the issues we’ve had in the fast corners at circuits this year and we will certainly be looking for the win, or at the very least some more important championship points.” Team-mate Andrea Dovizioso, who lies third in the championship, is also determined to set the record straight with a good result this weekend

Casey, Dani [Pedrosa] and Jorge will be strong rivals, but I’m confident that we will be able to fight with them. We are determined to return on the podium. This is our target.”
