Bieber cited for speeding on LA freeway

Justin Bieber is used to attracting crowds. But he had at least one follower too many when somebody tailed him on a Los Angeles freeway, and it led to a speeding ticket for the teen idol. The singer of “Boyfriend” and “Baby” was cited for driving in excess of 65 mph at about 10:45 a.m. Friday, after calls came in complaining of a freeway chase on southbound U.S. Highway 101 near Studio City, said Officer Ming Hsu of the California Highway Patrol. The 18-year-old crooner told officers he was being chased by paparazzi, and investigators confirmed he was being followed by at least one vehicle, Hsu said.

“The second vehicle left the area and there’s a search to find that driver,” Hsu said. Hsu did not have a description of the other vehicle. A call and an email to Bieber’s publicist weren’t immediately returned. The claim of a chase is backed by an unlikely eyewitness, Los Angeles City Councilman Dennis Zine, who called authorities after seeing Bieber’s distinctive chrome Fisker Karma being chased by five or six other cars. On his morning commute to City Hall, Zine, who spent 33 years as a police officer, said he saw Bieber’s sports car drive up behind him and zoom around him, weaving wildly in and out of traffic while five or six

other cars gave chase. Zine estimated the chase exceeded 100 mph as paparazzi engaged in wild maneuvers to keep up with Bieber, including driving on the shoulder and cutting off other vehicles. Zine said Bieber was breaking the law by driving recklessly and speeding, and the paparazzi were breaking the law by hounding him. “This was very bizarre, very outrageous and showed a total disregard for life and property,” Zine said. Zine, a witness to countless crashes and fatalities during his time as an officer, said he was surprised no one crashed. “The way (Bieber) was driving was totally reckless, I would have arrested him if I had pulled him over,”

said Zine. “I wouldn’t have given him a ticket and let him go.” Friday’s incident isn’t the only time the floppy-haired singer has had conflict with paparazzi. In May, a photographer called authorities, complaining he was roughed up by the pop star in a shopping center, The Commons at Calabasas. Authorities said the scuffle happened when a photographer tried to snap photos of Bieber and his girlfriend, teen actress Selena Gomez. In April 2011, Bieber called off a meeting with the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem, saying he cancelled, in part, because he didn’t want to face the country’s notoriously aggressive paparazzi.

New “Spider-Man” comes out swinging in box office win

The new “Spider-Man” climbed to the top of movie box office charts with weekend sales of $65 million in U.S. and Canadian ticket sales, a smashing debut for the reinvented franchise about a web-slinging superhero. “The Amazing Spider-Man,” starring Andrew Garfield in the role played by Tobey Maguire in three earlier installments, started strong with $7.5 million in midnight sales on Tuesday and remained so through the U.S. Independence Day holiday and the weekend. The 3D film has so far snared $140 million during its domestic run, distributor Sony Pictures said. The film has generated $341.2 million overall, including $201.6 million in the 70 foreign markets in which it has opened. Of its worldwide total, more than $24 million has come from showings in IMAX wide-screen theaters, according to Imax. Earlier in the week, Sony had forecast

domestic ticket sales of $130 million for the first six days. The movie reboots the modern film series that began with 2002’s “Spider-Man” and whose three movies netted around $2.5 billion at global box offices for its makers, Marvel Studios and distributor Sony Pictures. After those earlier films, Sony cut the budget for its fourth installment and replaced Maguire with Garfield, who played a supporting role in Facebook movie “The Social Network,” The film follows Spider-Man alter-ego Peter Parker in high school as he turns into a crime-fighting superhero. real life girlfriend, Emma Stone, plays Parker’s girlfriend, Gwen Stacy. The story of young love helped lure female viewers, who made up 42 percent of the audience, according to Sony. Seventy-three percent of reviews compiled on website Rotten Tomatoes recommended the movie. The new “Spider-Man” cost about $215 million to produce, plus tens of millions more for marketing. The film is Sony’s second big-budget hit this summer, following the success of alien comedy “Men in Black 3” in May. Last week’s winner, comedy “Ted” about a man and his foul-mouthed, potsmoking teddy bear, slipped to second place with domestic sales of $32.6 million from Friday through Sunday. Directed by “Family Guy” creator Seth MacFarlane, “Ted” has earned $120.2 million domestically since its debut a week ago. The No. 3 slot went to “Brave,” an animated fairy tale from Walt Disney Co’s Pixar studio. The movie about a rebellious, red-haired Scottish princess grabbed $20.1 million at North American (U.S. and Canadian) theaters. That brings its domestic ticket sales to $174.5 million. Oliver Stone’s new movie, “Savages,” rung up $16.2 million in its opening weekend, finishing in fourth place. The “Savages” cast includes Salma Hayek, Benicio Del Toro, John Travolta and Taylor Kitsch, the star of this year’s two big box-office flops - “John Carter” and “Battleship.” In fifth place, male striptease movie “Magic Mike” racked up $15.6 million. The movie starring Channing Tatum and Matthew McConaughey has brought in $72.8 million domestically since last week’s debut.

TABANAN - Polemics related to geothermal project in Dasong forest, Candikuning village, Baturiti, started to come up again. As assessed to be dormant, local residents questioned the certainty of the mega-project. Moreover, the lineups of Bali House had raided to the project site some time ago. However, the geothermal drilling project remains uncertain. Hamlet Chief of Bukit Catu, Candikuning village, Wayan Sarma, asserted that his residents really hoped the clarity of such geothermal project. Explained, there had been some artesian wells exuding hot temperature. If left unchecked, people who had direct contact would be affected. “If continued, there should be clarity. Otherwise, please immediately close and stop so as not to make people anxious,” he said on Sunday (Jul 8). According to him, people always worried about the disaster if the geothermal drilling project had no clarity. Meanwhile, Headman of Candikuning, Made Mudita, said his party got a lot of questions from his residents related to the project. In essence, they questioned whether the project reaping the pros and cons would be continued

or totally closed. “Since there is no certainty, residents re-questioned the geothermal project whether it would be continued or not,” he said. According to Mudita, the central and provincial government should immediately ensure the project. If it was rejected and not resumed, the land drilled had to be reforested and restored to its original condition. Conversely, if it would be resumed, the residents had to be involved in discussion and given a clear understanding and certainty. “Do not be suspended like this, the drilling worked on seems to be left dormant,” he protested. Decisiveness of the government was awaited by the community because they had direct contact with the project, said Mudita who lived near the location of geothermal drilling. Continued on page 6

Thousands risk Internet shutdown as US fix expires

Agence France-Presse

WASHINGTON - Tens of thousands of people around the world whose computers were infected with malware may lose their Internet access Monday after the expiry of a US government fix, security experts said. However, no trouble was reported in the early hours of Monday. The problem stems from malware known as DNS Changer, which was created by a gang of cybercriminals to redirect Internet traffic by hijacking the domain name systems of Web browsers. The ring behind the DNS Changer virus, discovered in 2007, was shut down last year by the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Estonian police and other law enforcement agencies. Six Estonians and a Russian were

charged in Estonia in November with infecting computers, including NASA machines, with the malware as part of an online advertising scam that reaped at least $14 million. Because the virus controlled so much Internet traffic, authorities obtained a court order to allow the FBI to operate replacement servers which allow traffic to flow normally, even from infected computers. But those replacement servers were to have been shut down at 0401 GMT, when some experts say infected computers could face an “Internet doomsday.” “DNS Changer is an insidious form of malware affecting everyone from the everyday consumer to a large chunk of the Fortune 500,” said Lars Harvey, the chief executive of security firm Internet Identity.

DENPASAR - Collapse disaster of the basement parking project on Jalan Sulawesi, Denpasar, was followed up by the Denpasar Spatial Planning and Housing Agency (DTRP). For a while, construction of the project worth IDR 6.6 billion had been suspended. Moreover, the project location was still mounted with police line. “We will make coordination with police so that the project can be resumed,” said the Head of the DRTP Denpasar, I Made Kusuma Diputra, accompanied by Project Manager, I Putu Sukardja, met after the coordination meeting at the Office of DTRP. car and 148 motorcycles. Totally, the capacity of parking area would be 227 units of vehicle. Urge thorough investigation

The collapse of basement parking wall on Jalan Sulawesi, Denpasar, Saturday (Jul 7), was responded seriously by the lineup of Denpasar House. Even, a number of people’s representative urged a thorough investigation. Moreover, the incident had claimed two fatalities. Its consequence could lead to the investigation into the realm of law. It was confirmed by Chairman of the Great Indonesia Faction doubling as a member of Commission B of Denpasar House, I Ketut Resmiyasa. Other than Resmiyasa, Chairman of the Golkar Faction of Denpasar House, I Wayan Mariyana Wandhira, also regretted the calamity occurred in the basement parking project. He assessed the incident on the collapse of east wall of the basement parking was caused by carelessness of the implementer and supervisor of the project valued at IDR 6.6 billion. “It was not a disaster, but a negligence of the project implementer and supervisor,” said the politician of the Marhaenism Indonesian National Party (PNIM). Mariyana Wandira said there were at least some points causing the collapse of the project in the heart of the city. “Firstly, it had something to do with negligence of the workers, and then related to non-existent security system at the project location and surveillance,” said Wandhira. Based on some causes, his party regretted the lack of supervision of the project that had claimed two lives. “We deeply regretted the incident. Moreover, it was a government project. On that account, we deliver and urge the police to execute a thorough investigation on this incident,” he said. (kmb12)

Wuku Resort held topping off

After the collapse of project

Kusuma Diputra said due to such incident his party would find out more information about the cause of collapse to basement parking wall because it was beyond prediction and disaster. “Having been browsed, in fact there was a wide cavity at the collapse location namely on the excavation wall. When workers were straightening the excavation wall, it suddenly collapsed so that the victims were piled up,” said Kusuma Diputra. Kusuma Diputra also added that location of the project worked on by PT Sekar Kedaton Nusantara from Surabaya was a relatively risky area. It was called risky because there were many utilities around it such as the installation of DSDP, Telkom, PDAM, PLN and market activity. More ironically, the utilities were not as originally imagined. For example, DSDP piping channel was estimated to be straight, but in fact it was askew at certain point. “We could not predict it before,” he explained. Based on the results of meeting engaging the Transportation Agency, supervising consultant and planning consultant, it was decided to make anticipation later on. At least, four points should be carried out by the project contractor namely closing the northern part of Jalan Sulawesi from all vehicle activities and setting a safeguard on the excavation wall in the form of counterfort walls and gravity walls, accelerating the installation of concrete retaining wall on the south and west sides to keep the stability of the excavation wall as well as moving back the project fence to ensure the worker safety. As reported previously, the basement parking spread across the area of 1,571 square meters and would be able to accommodate 49 units of car. Meanwhile, the ground floor with the area of 1,850 square meters would be able to accommodate 30 units of

Result of raid at Ocean Blue Hotel Bali

Two foreign workers asked to discharges Bali Post

MANGUPURA - Result of the raid made on Saturday (Jul 7), the Badung Social Welfare and Labor Agency found two illegal foreign workers who worked in the Ocean Blue Hotel Bali, Kampial, South Kuta. In response to the findings, the agency directly asked the hotel management to discharge both workers. The Head of Badung Social Welfare and Labor Agency, I Nyoman Predangga, Sunday (Jul 8) revealed there were three foreign workers employed at Ocean Blue Hotel Bali. Among them, only one who met the requirements to work. Meanwhile, on the raid the two other workers could not present their complete documents, particularly the document of foreign worker employment plan (RPTKA) issued by the Ministry of Labor Affairs to

employ foreign workers. Predangga admitted to have immediately asked the management of Ocean Blue Hotel Bali to discharge both foreign workers having no complete documents. Last Sunday, his party already re-checked the presence of both foreign workers. Based on recognition of the hotel management, both workers had been dismissed. “We are decisive. No license means they cannot be employed. We have asked to discharge both foreign workers. It is said they are no longer employed. Later, we will check again the truth,” said Predangga while mentioning that hotel management was still processing their permit in the Ministry of Labor Affairs. Regarding the sanction, the Badung Social Welfare and Labor Agency had no rights to do so be-

cause it belonged to the authority of immigration office. Predangga quibbled that his agency only issued the permit of foreign worker employment (IMTA) for companies in the regency. If the company operated in two regencies, the permit would be issued by the province. The IMTA was issued after the possession of RPTKA and only valid for one year and renewable. What about the allegations of six illegal foreign workers? Predangga stated that based on the raid and report of the Ocean Blue Hotel Bali management, it was only found three foreign workers employed. Predangga added that his party would persistently monitor the possible truth of information regarding the presence of the six foreign workers. (kmb25)

Dogs may protect babies from some infections: study Agence France-Presse

AFP PHOTO / JUNG YEON-JE

This photo taken on May 15, 2012 shows LG Electronics’ OLED 55-inch-wide (140-cm) and just 0.16 inches (four mm) thick television displayed during an technology show in Seoul.

LG Electronics seeks to win race for next-generation TV

WASHINGTON - Babies who spend time around pet dogs have fewer ear infections and respiratory ailments than those whose homes are animal-free, said a study released on Monday. The study, published in the US journal Pediatrics, did not say why but suggested that being around a dog that spends at least part of its day outdoors may boost a child’s immune system in the first year of life. Cats, too, seemed to convey some protection to babies, though the effect observed was weaker than with dogs. The research was based on 397 children in Finland whose parents made diary entries each week recording the state of their child’s health during the infant’s first year, from nine weeks to 52 weeks of age. Overall, babies in homes with cats or dogs were about 30 percent less likely to have respiratory infectious symptoms -- which included cough, wheezing, rhinitis (stuffy or runny nose) and fever -- and about half as likely to get ear infections. “If children had dog or cat contacts at home, they were significantly healthier during the study period,” said the study led by experts at Kuopio University Hospital in Finland. The most protective association was seen in children who had a dog inside at home for up to six hours a day, compared to children who did not have any dogs or who had dogs that were always outside. “We offer preliminary evidence that dog ownership may be protective against respiratory tract infections during the first year of life,” said the study. “We speculate that animal contacts could help to mature the immunologic system, leading to more composed immunologic response and shorter duration of infections.” The improvement was significant, even after researchers ruled out other factors that could boost infection risk, such as not having been breastfed, attending daycare, being raised by smokers or parents with asthma, or having older siblings in the household. In addition to having less frequent ear infections and respiratory infections, babies near dogs tended to need fewer courses of antibiotics compared to those who were reared in pet-free households, it said. Previous research has shown conflicting results, with some studies finding no benefit for young children being around furry pets and others finding that animal contact appears to offer some protection against colds and stomach ailments. The study authors said their research differs from previous analyses because it focuses solely on the first postnatal year and does not include older children.

SEOUL - South Korea’s LG Electronics, long overshadowed by Samsung Electronics, is confident it can outpace its bigger rival in the race to dominate the world’s next-generation TV market. LG, the world’s second-largest TV maker after Samsung, believes its technology will give it the edge in organic light-emitting diode (OLED) sets, which are expected to drive the industry in the future. “We have been relatively slower in introducing new devices (than Samsung). But when it comes to OLED TV... we can run far faster than the rival,” said Ro Seog-Ho, executive vice president of LG’s TV business. “I think there’s a very high chance that we can win this game,” he told AFP in a recent interview. OLED TVs don’t require separate backlights and thus are thinner, consume about 20 percent less power and offer a sharper picture than conventional flat-panel sets. An LG OLED model, 55 inches

(140 cm) wide but just 0.16 inches (four mm) thick, was crowned best gadget of the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January, trumping a similar-size Samsung set. But manufacturers are still struggling to cut the cost of making the delicate panels in large quantities. LG and Samsung are set to begin sales of the OLED TVs in the latter half of this year but with price tags over $10,000. Market researcher iSuppli estimates just 34,000 global sales of OLED sets this year, possibly growing to 2.1 million sets in 2015. Ro said LG’s version of the technology -- called white OLED -would allow cheaper and faster mass-production of panels with more vivid images than Samsung, which

uses a technology called red, green and blue. “It means we can increase panel yield rate faster than them and eventually cut prices faster,” he said. Struggling Japanese TV giants Sony and Panasonic teamed up in June to jointly develop OLED panels. But Ro said it would take them one or two years to roll out a new panel. “You can’t introduce a new technology too early for consumers to accept. But at the same time, you can’t introduce it too late when there’s no room left for you to squeeze in,” he said. LG Electronics expects to sell 30 million TV sets of all types worldwide this year, up nearly 20 percent from 2011. 3D sets are expected to make up more than 10 percent of the total.

Batuampar tourist area

Known overseas, remain isolate at home

Bali Post

SINGARAJA - When mentioning a favorite tourism area, residents of Buleleng will surely point out the Lovina. As a matter of fact, since recent years, the Batuampar tourist area in Gerokgak subdistrict has been widely known by foreign tourists. However, at home the area still seems isolate because its name is rarely mentioned by residents. The area located in the western Buleleng is visited by many foreign tourists every day. As a rule they have a promenade on the beach, explore the countryside or luxuriate in the uniqueness of natural scenery through the garden of local residents. Although there are domestic tourists visiting the area, their number seems only a few. Even, some domestic tourists, especially the locals of Bali, claim to be unfamiliar with Batuampar and better know Lovina. Secretary of Pejarakan village, I Gede Kordin Yudiasa, said that Batuampar tourist area was a coastal and hilly area offering a peaceful atmosphere and had been well arranged. Between the sea and the hills lay a number of villages mostly inhabited by farmers and fishermen. Overlay of the beach spreading along 17 kilometers was divided into five villages including the Penyabangan, Banyupoh, Pemuteran, Sumberkima and Pejarakan. Before initiated into an exclusive tourist area, the area belonged to arid coastal plain, dingy and bumpy area. Though looking dry and arid in the late 1980s and early 1990s, apparently there had been some people who could see the great potential retained by the Western Buleleng. One of them was the Regent of Buleleng then, Ginantra, declaring the Batuampar a tourist area.

A number of tourism stakeholders such as Anak Agung Prana and his colleagues were also interested to invest in the area. Then, slowly but surely, the Batuampar area became a tourist area with its own character. Aside from being an exclusive area, Batuampar area also had many ancient temples frequently visited by general public such as the Pulaki Temple, the tombs of the couple Layonsari and Jayaprana as well as other temples scattered on the hills to the Menjangan Island. Kordin Yudiasa added the number of foreign tourists coming to Batuampar could be seen from the number of tickets sold. Its daily visit reached 20 to 100 people. Such amount only relied on the wordof-mouth promotion. Besides, the hotel existing around the area also helped promote the Batuampar so that it could bring in many visitors. The existing data showed the number of tourist visit to Buleleng within the past ten years (20012010) continued to increase, where in 2001 the number of tourist visit to Buleleng reached 73,703 people. In 2010, it increased to 263,075 people consisting of 166,416 foreign tourists and 96,659 domestic tourists. “With such persistently increasing number of tourist visit, it is expected the arrangement and promotion of Batuampar can be improved,” he said. TABANAN - A Social Department emergency speed boat given to Tabanan Regency seemed worrying as its equipments no longer maintained and left on the shores of Pasut, Tibubiu Village, Kerambitan. With it being aged, a number of its parts rotten, could be damaged even could not function. This case caused fishermen and locals around questioned this boat’s existence, moreover during the rain it got flooded even though it’s under a mango tree, parked on a road side, also has no base on its bottom to place it higher. “It has been here for a long time, it is not known of its maintenance,” a resident stated last Sunday (8/7). There was also a building next to it grown with wild grasses not

known what it’s for and used by farmer to take a short rest after working on the field. Head of Tabanan Social Agency, Wayan Kotio, declined that this boat is left ignored and it is purposely parked not far from the beach because of its function as an emergency speed boat, it is ready to be help during disasters at sea which so it will be functioned whenever there is a disaster. Damaged Road planted banana tree Swimming Bali Post

TABANAN - Annoyed with the damaged road, residents just went and plant a banana tree on a hole located in the middle of the main road of Meliling Village, Kerambitan. This condition is worrying knowing that the road is actually an alternative route from Gilimanuk to Tabanan. It is suspected the road has been long damaged yet still unfixed which now has trees planted in two locations permanently. It is

not known who did it as residents only knew it by Sunday (8/7) morning that cause road users have to avoid it. It was stated this damaged road have been causing injuries from time to time moreover it has no lighting at all. There were issues that this road will be covered by a hot-mix on it but it is still unknown when it will be. It is hoped while waiting for it some chalk stone would be given to damaged parts so the road is much nicer. This situation was confirmed

by Tabanan Representative from the village, Wayan Sudira, who got the information about it. He understood the disappointment of the locals there and clarified that this road will get it hot-mixed by this year which there has been a socialisation on it. Sudira stated he will get a chalk stone aid to make it better for now which he will coordinate with Tabanan Public Works Agency. If they can’t then he will try to get it. “I hope the people will be patient on it, we will not stay put,” Sudira exclaimed. (kmb30)

Vietnamese protesters hold up posters while shouting anti-China slogans in front of the Chinese embassy in Hanoi on July 8, 2012.

Demonstrators said they were stopped by security forces about 100 metres (330 feet) away from the Chinese embassy in the city, but no arrests were made in the latest public expression of discontent over Beijing’s perceived aggression in the sea. The crowd waved banners and chanted “Paracel -- Vietnam! Spratlys -- Vietnam!” during the peaceful rally, in reference to two potentially oil-rich island chains claimed by both Beijing and Hanoi. Last Sunday, smaller demonstrations were held in both Hanoi and the southern economic metropolis of Ho Chi Minh City as the maritime dispute once again flared following 11 street rallies on the issue last year. Protest is rare in the authoritarian country. The first rallies last year were allowed to go ahead without interference, but authorities clamped down on later gatherings, briefly detaining dozens of people after talks between Hanoi and Beijing. Relations between Beijing and Hanoi have soured recently, with Vietnam attracting China’s ire last month after it adopted a law that places the Spratlys under Hanoi’s sovereignty. For its part China in June said it had elevated the administrative status of what it calls the Nansha (Spratly) and Xisha (Paracel) islands from a county to a prefectural-level district. China’s state-backed China National Offshore Oil Corp. also said it was seeking bids for exploration of oil blocks in disputed waters -- a move slammed by Vietnam. Beijing says it has sovereign rights to the whole South China Sea, believed to sit atop vast oil and gas deposits. The sea is also claimed in whole or part by Taiwan, Vietnam, Brunei, Malaysia, and the Philippines.

Small world: Show for North Korea’s Kim goes Disney Associated Press

PYONGYANG — Mickey Mouse and Winnie the Pooh took the stage in North Korea during a concert for new leader Kim Jong Un, in an unusual — and unauthorized — performance featuring Disney characters. Performers dressed as Minnie Mouse, Tigger and others danced and pranced as footage from “Snow White,” ‘’Dumbo,” ‘’Beauty and the Beast” and other Disney movies played on a massive backdrop, according to still photos shown on state TV. The inclusion of characters popular in the West — particularly from the United States, North Korea’s wartime enemy — is a notable change in direction for

performances in Pyongyang. Actors and actresses also showed off new wardrobes, including strapless gowns and little black dresses. Kim himself established the group that performed, and the changes may be a sign that he is seeking to carve out a different image from his father and predecessor, Kim Jong Il, by easing restrictions on Western culture, said Koh Yu-hwan, a North Korean studies professor based in Seoul, South Korea. The state-run Korean Central News Agency said Kim has a “grandiose plan to bring about a dramatic turn in the field of literature and arts this year.” Under Kim Jong Il, who died in December, North Korea became well known for its massive Arirang

shows, synchronized dance and gymnastics shows involving up to 100,000 people. This appears to be the first time Disney characters have been included in a major performance in Pyongyang, though Winnie and Mickey have been popular among children for several years. Backpacks, pencil cases and pajamas imported from China often feature Disney characters, and stories such as “Dumbo” have been translated into Korean for North Korean schoolchildren. However, it is unusual to make such images a central part of a North Korean performance and publicize them on state TV. Zenia Mucha, chief spokesperson for The Walt Disney Co., said the use of Disney characters in the North Korean performance was not

authorized by the U.S. entertainment company. “This was not licensed or authorized by The Walt Disney Company,” Mucha told the AP by telephone on Sunday. U.S. sanctions prohibit the import of North Korean goods to the United States, but do not ban the sales of American consumer products in North Korea unless they involve officials or companies on the U.S. Treasury Department’s sanctions blacklist. The performance was staged Friday by the Moranbong band, which was making its debut after being assembled by Kim himself, KCNA said. The dispatch made no mention of Disney characters, but said the concert included the traditional folk

tune “Arirang” as well as a number of upbeat foreign songs. Kim, who is in his late 20s, has sought to project an image of youth, vitality and modernity. Early Sunday, he led top officials in paying their respects to his grandfather, North Korea founder Kim Il Sung, at the mausoleum where he lies in state. Kim died 18 years ago Sunday. Earlier in the year, a quintet of accordionists became a YouTube sensation for their arrangement of “Take on Me,” a pop song by the Norwegian band a-ha. North Korea and the United States remain in a technical state of war because they signed a truce, not a peace treaty, after three years of fighting in 1953. The foes do not have diplomatic relations.

BUSINESS Barclays scandal sends shockwaves through global finance

Agence France-Presse

LONDON - The Barclays rate-rigging scandal is sending shockwaves through world finance, putting ethics and regulation under scrutiny, and raising the prospect of criminal charges in a sector-wide global probe. Britain’s Serious Fraud Office said Friday it will investigate the interbank rate manipulation scandal which has engulfed Barclays, forced three top resignations, tainted the City of London and sparked a political firestorm. Barclays was fined £290 million ($452 million, 360 million euros) by British and US regulators just over one week ago, for attempted manipulation of Libor and Euribor interbank interest rates between 2005 and 2009. Barclays became the first bank to be fined as part of a global probe into suspected manipulation of the twin interest rates that are crucial to the operation of short-term financing and global markets. British lawmakers voted on Thursday to hold a parliamentary investigation into the scandal, instead of a full judicial inquiry. “This is a multi-bank issue -- albeit evidence and fines for other culpable banks will probably dribble out over a period of many months or years,” said Ian Gordon, banking sector analyst

at Investec. “In broad terms, the issue itself and the associated fallout are damaging for the financial sector, both in reputational terms, the costs of investigation and fines -- and any potential redress. “Moreover, the issue helps to distract from and hence damage any initiatives to increase the flow of lending to the economy, with obvious negative consequences,” Gordon said. BNP Paribas analysts agreed that the crisis had the potential to engulf other lenders. “As far as we are aware, the regulators have so far not disclosed a full list of banks being investigated,” they said in a research note to clients. Libor (London Interbank Offered Rate) is a flagship instrument used all over the world, affecting what banks, businesses and individuals pay to borrow money. Euribor is the eurozone equivalent. The Libor rate is calculated daily by data provider Thomson Reuters, on behalf of industry body the British Bankers’Association, using estimates from banks of their own interbank rates. Euribor is provided by the Brussels-based European Banking Federation, using data from 43 international banks. Barclays has admitted that its traders had routinely submitted false readings, as they attempted to benefit their own lucrative derivatives deals.

BEIJING - China’s inflation slowed in June to its lowest level in 29 months, official data showed Monday, giving the government more flexibility in its efforts to reboot the world’s second-biggest economy.

Protesters from the campaign group ‘38 degrees’ demonstrate outside Portculis House in London, on July 4, 2012, against what they describe as a ‘close relationship between bankers and politicians’ as former Barclays Bank Chief Executive Bob Diamond gives evidence to the British Treasury Select Committee.

The country’s consumer price index (CPI) rose by 2.2 percent yearon-year in June, the National Bureau of Statistics said, down from 3.0 percent in May and the lowest figure since January 2010. The inflation rate for the first half of 2012 was 3.3 percent, the bureau said, well below the government’s full-year target of 4.0 percent. The inflation figures were the latest in a series of data in recent weeks showing China’s economy is slowing, which analysts said would allow the government to act more aggressively in trying to revive slowing growth. “The softening CPI will give the

central bank more room to stabilise the economy,” Tang Jianwei, a Shanghai-based economist with the Bank of Communications, told AFP. “Before the central bank had to balance between inflationary pressures and softening demand.” China’s economy grew an annual 8.1 percent in the first quarter of 2012 -- its slowest pace in nearly three years. The government will release data for the second quarter on Friday. The government early this year set an annual economic growth target of 7.5 percent, down from expansion of 9.2 percent last year and 10.4 percent in 2010.

But the central bank last week cut interest rates for the second time in a month, in a surprise move that analysts said indicated the economy was likely slowing more sharply than expected. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao then called on Sunday for stronger measures to spur economic growth, saying downward pressure was big. “We must take further steps to increase the strength of pre-emptive fine-tuning,” the official Xinhua news agency quoted Wen as saying. Analysts attributed the fall in June inflation to an easing of food prices, a key component of CPI, which rose 3.8 percent in June, down from 6.4 percent in May, according to the statistics bureau. They said inflation would likely fall further in the coming months, with deflation even a possibility.

“Japan, normally the fifth after Australia, is now in fourth place after China and Malaysia,” head of the Bali Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) I Gede Suarsa said in Denpasar on Sunday. He said Malaysia which has been fourth, has been promoted to third position and China had been promoted from third to second position. Some 299.360 Australians had been holidaying in Bali in the five months of 2012, an increase of 8.48 percent compared to the same period in last year’s 275.957. Last year Australians who came to Bali reached 788.664, a 22.85 percent increase compared to last year’s 641.979, Gede Suarsa said, adding that Australia contributed 31.99 percent of the total number of foreign tourists to Bali reaching 1.156.424 in the January-May 2012 period, a 9.31 percent increase in the same period of last year’s 1.057.957.

Gusde crowned 2012 Quiksilver’s KOG SEA Champion IBP

KUTA - A 15 year old Ida Bagus Kusuma Rai Tanabe (Gusde) of Kuta was crowned the 2012 Quiksilver King of the Groms (KOG) SEA champion yesterday on Kuta Beach in front of his family and friends after winning a very close 25 minute final dual against Aussie expat Reef Doig, who is also 15 years old. The two Under 16 year old surfers had battled through two days of challenging wave conditions and a talented field of frothing grommets (surfer slang for kids under 16) to meet on Sunday afternoon and decide who would be crowned the “King” and receive the all-expensepaid trip to the Quiksilver King of the Groms International Final in France, as well as a brand new Yamaha motorbike. It was a epic final in 1-2 foot beach break waves, where most waves allowed one or two turns at best, as these young rippers went blow for blow, smashing the lip, racing and floating over sections, pulling out all the stops to impress the judges and get the big scores. In the exciting climax, with less

than a minute left and Gusde in the lead, young Reef spied a nice little wave lining up and then took off, knowing he only needed a small score of 3.05 to take the win. After smashing three turns to finish the wave off, Reef, Gusde and everybody on the beach walked back to the judging tower waiting for the announcement, but they wouldn’t hear the news until later at the beachside presentation. “It was close….but not close enough Reef,” exclaimed Quiksilver’s Tipi Jabrik to Reef and the waiting crowd as the presentation began. Gusde was perhaps still in shock from the announcement of his win, for when asked how he felt about winning the King of the Groms title and getting a trip to France could just smile and reply, “I’m really happy, so happy!” He’ll no doubt be working on his French and English language skills from now on in preparation for his trip. A total of 97 boy and girl groms joined up for the annual Quiksilver King of the Grom’s SEA Final at Kuta Beach, and new this year was the addition of a special Roxy Jam for the girls, where they could compete together instead of mixing

it up with the boys. Big Eco Weekend The Quiksilver King of the Groms SEA Final was part of the Coca-Cola Amatil Indonesia and Quiksilver “Bali’s Big Eco Weekend”, an annual event organized with the intention of bringing environmental awareness to the public and private sectors of Indonesia and the world regarding Bali and Indonesia’s problems with waste management and keeping the beaches and water clean. To help draw attention and raise awareness of these issues facing Bali, Quiksilver elicited help from their world famous team of surfing legends, 4-time World Champion Mark Richards, 2-time World Champion Tom Carroll, 1989 World Champion Martin Potter, outlaw power surfer Matt Hoy, and Pipeline Master Jake Paterson. These five legends came to the beach and signed posters, watched the groms surf, and then surfed themselves in the Locals vs Legends tag team challenge. It was a definite highlight of the day for the beach crowd, with superb and hilarious commentary by Surfing

World Editor Vaughan Blakey, as the Legends took on the local Quiksilver Grom and the Quiksilver Local teams. It the end it was the Quiksilver Local team taking the trophy off the Legends, who had won last year with a horn-beating wave by Jake Paterson. But this time it was the Local’s Tipi Jabrik who got the winning wave over Jake, to come in to the beach with his board held high. Tom Carroll was the new legend on the team this year, and had a great time as well, also mentioning wave size as having something to do with their loss, saying, “This legends thing was good fun, but the waves were so small I couldn’t hardly surf! But it was really fun hanging out with MR, Pottz, Hoyo and Jake as well as with Ketut Menda and all the Bali crew, and seeing those groms surfing against us. There was a great crowd too, and I’m glad they enjoyed it as much as we did.” As part of these Quiksilver legends activities during their stay in Bali, they participated in a charity golf tournament and dinner at the Pan Pacific Nirwana Bali Resort,

where their replica surfboards along with other items were auctioned off to raise a whopping $44,000 USD to help clean up Bali’s beaches. These funds along with funds donated by Garuda Indonesia and other sponsors will buy beachcleaning equipment to help with the effort to get Bali cleaner and greener. Quiksilver SEA CEO Paul Hutson was excited and proud of the great results from the weekend, saying “I think it’s safe to say that our expectations were more than exceeded this weekend, and for that I’d like to thank our presenting sponsor Garuda Indonesia, our surfing legends for giving their time up to come and help us, our great partner Coca-Cola Amatil Indonesia, Yamaha and the whole list of other sponsors, the lifeguards that help us out every year, and everybody that helped make this weekend a huge success. Raising a total of Rp 452,400,000 (about $48,000 USD) is quite an achievement, and will result in a substantial leap forward in our mission to help us clean up Bali, setting an example for all of Indonesia and also other parts of the world to follow.”

Saudi’s ‘Barbie’ princess makes shock UK asylum bid

Democrats want Romney to explain offshore accounts Associated Press

Princess Sara bint Talal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, also known as the “Barbie” princess due to her pampered upbringing, said she had also applied to the Home Office for political asylum for her four daughters, according to the report. The ministry said it would not comment on individual cases. “With deep regret, and as I have been left with no other choice, I have written to the UK Home Office to indicate that I, and my children, wish to be granted political asylum,” she said in a statement. “My reputation has been besmirched in the media by a baseless and malicious smear campaign. “For years I have endured all this in silence, while trying to resolve my situation with dignity through the normal channels, without fanfare or publicity.” The divorced princess currently lives in London after moving to Britain in 2007 following a falling-out with her 80-year-old father prince Talal bin Abdul-Aziz Al Saud. It is the first time such a claim

has been made by a senior member of the ruling family. Sara, 38, believes senior Saudi officials plotted to have her kidnapped and brought back to Riyadh and claims they subjected her to a “well orchestrated and malicious campaign of persecution”. Her passport expired two years after arriving in Britain, and she is now facing deportation as her visa has also run out. Britain has to decide if her claims are valid and risk sparking a diplomatic spat by accepting her request. Tensions are currently high within the Saudi royal family due to the illness of King Abdullah and the recent death of Crown Prince Nayef bin Abdul Aziz al-Saud. The deceased prince supported Sara as he was also opposed to her father, and it was reported that his recent death may have sparked the asylum request. A Saudi embassy diplomat confirmed the embassy had been involved in visa negotiations.

SOUTHAMPTON — Mitt Romney privately raised millions of dollars from New York’s elite on Sunday, as Democrats launched coordinated attacks against the likely Republican presidential nominee, intensifying calls for him to explain offshore bank accounts and release several years of tax returns. The line of attack, dismissed by the Romney campaign as an “unfounded character assault,” follows new reports that raise questions about Romney’s personal wealth, which could exceed $250 million. President Barack Obama’s re-election campaign is expected to push the strategy throughout the coming week, underscoring their desire to portray Romney as disconnected from the middle-class voters he needs to win the presidency. “He’s the first and only candidate for the president of the United States with a Swiss bank account, with tax shelters, with tax avoidance schemes that involve so many foreign countries,” Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., said on CBS’ “Face the Nation.” He’s one of several high-profile Democrats who spoke out on the Sunday morning news shows. Romney may have unintentionally helped the Obama campaign. Republican donors driving Mercedes, Bentleys — and in one case a candy red 2013 Ferrari Spider — crowded into a series of closed-door Romney fundraisers in the Hamptons, New York’s exclusive string of waterfront communities on Long Island’s South Shore. Wall Street bankers and brokerage house chiefs, among others, make the area their weekend playground. problem, and something we have had issues with for years,” said Johannes Ullrich, a researcher with the SANS Security Institute. But he said he expected the impact to be “minimal” because many of these systems are no longer used or maintained. Internet Identity said last week that at least 58 of all Fortune 500 companies and two out of 55 major government entities had at least one computer or router that was infected with DNS Changer. That compares with figures in January, when half of Fortune 500 companies and US federal agencies were infected. IID said the malware also compromises computers by preventing antivirus software updates, thereby exposing infected machines to even more malicious software.

Users who think they are infected may perform a test at the DNS Changer Working Group’s website http:// www.dcwg.org/ or others operated by various security firms. For computers affected, the blackout will be total, experts say. “Connectivity will be lost to the Internet PERIOD,” said a blog posting from the security firm Symantec. The virus was designed by six Estonians, whose arrest was announced by the FBI in November. According to the bureau, the gang used the DNS Changer to infect about four million computers in more than 100 countries in a scam launched in 2007. There were initially about 500,000 infections in the United States, including computers belonging to individuals, businesses, and government agencies such as NASA, the FBI said.

Republican presidential candidate, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, left, takes a walk with his wife Ann, on the beach after a campaign stop at Holland State Park on Tuesday, June 19, 2012 in Holland, Mich. The Hamptons crowd, however, saw things differently. “I think he’s a plain talking guy,” Peter Cohen said, referring to Romney. Cohen, the former Shearson Lehman Brothers chief who now heads his own investment banking firm, made the comment as he chewed a cigar in his black Range Rover outside a Romney fundraiser expected to generate $3 million. Romney’s day concluded at the Southampton estate of billionaire industrialist David Koch, where donors were asked to give $50,000 per person or $75,000 per couple. The event attracted protesters like Robert Shainwald, a 65-year-old retired teacher.

“Romney has no idea what the working person’s daily concerns are. How could he?” Shainwald said as he waved a sign offering free vegetables to anyone who wasn’t a billionaire. Romney would be among the nation’s richest presidents if elected. He made his fortune at Bain Capital, a Boston-based private equity firm that has become a key part of the argument for his White House bid. He hasn’t drawn a regular paycheck in more than a decade, however, and has instead lived off a series of investments. But Romney has refused to release more than two years of tax returns that would outline those investments, breaking from a precedent set by his father, former Michigan Gov. George Romney, who released 12 years of his tax returns when he sought the

People were sometimes made anxious by the issues related to the continuation of the project. However, the project remained dormant again. Mudita added that in 2010 his party had asked for socialization to PT Bali Energy Ltd. (BEL) as operator of the geothermal project. The letter was indeed responded, but no socialization activity was implemented to date. “Basically, people want an explanation and resolution. The matter of rejection or support, it all depends on the results of the study and socialization,” he said. Mudita also questioned the commitment of Bali House that had made a raid to the project site at the beginning of last January 2012. (kmb30)

He said the geothermal project would come in direct contact with 7,000 residents inhabiting the Candikuning village. So far, residents were afraid of the collapsing ground, the smell of sulfur and a decrease in the lake water level if the project continued. The more regretted by residents was less maximal socialization related to projects, especially to the grassroots level so that it could kindle an unending question among the residents. visit to his Indonesian counterpart Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in Jakarta on Monday. Andi said Klaus really admired the Borobudur temple which was built about 1,000 years ago when there was no heavy equipment like what people use in construction work today. Before visiting Borobudur, the Czech president and the first lady also visited Prambanan temple in Sleman district in the company of Andi Malarangeng and Sleman district head Sri Purnomo. Czech Republic President Vaclav Klaus (2L) walks with the Indonesian Minister of Sports Andi Malarangeng (L) as they arrive at the Borobudur temple in Central Java province during a visit on July 8, 2012. Borobudur, a UNESCO world heritage site is an ancient buddhist temple built in the 8th century and is to this day a pilgrimage site for buddhist devotees as well as being one of Indonesia’s top tourist attractions.

Sleman Ancient Heritage Preservation House spokesman Muriyanto said the Czech president was really satisfied with his visit to Prambanan temple, and loved every moment of it to stay longer. According to him, the Czech president spent more than 30 minutes to see every corner of the temple and admired it so much. Muriyanto said that because of Klaus` visit to the Prambanan temple, the area was closed for public for more than four hours. “The temple area was closed for public from 7 am to 11 am because the the Czech president would visit the area,” Muriyanto said, adding that Klaus also took his time to visit a number of historical sites including Borobudur temple, and Yogyakarta Palace. Meanwhile, Borobudur Tourism Park spokesman Pujo Suwarno said the visit to Borobudur temple by the Czech president was expected to increase the number of tourists from his country to visit the temple. “May East European tourists have been visiting Borobudur temple so far and we hope the number will continue to increase following the visit by Vaclac Klaus,” Pujo said.

WIMBLEDON - Roger Federer believes becoming a father and celebrating his 30th birthday inspired him to a record-equalling seventh Wimbledon title. Federer moved level with Pete Sampras on seven All England Club titles and celebrated a 17th Grand Slam crown with his battling 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4 win over Britain’s Andy Murray in his eighth Wimbledon final.

Environmental Pura Taman Sari is located in Banjar Sengguhan, the northeast city of Semarapura, as far as 500 meters or less, can be achieved with either two wheel drive or four-wheel and road is paved, precisely in Kelurahan Se-

Then the gods and the giants play Maha Meru Mountain with a dragon Ananthaboga as coiled, with the centrifugal mountain in a sea of milk produced by a variety of products, including the Amrita (the water of life), Such kinds of products including the Amerta (Water of life). Thus according to the story contained in the Adi Parwa will Amerta greatness as a means of life-giving waters of the world and prosperity and purity. Story theme is very compatible with the environment of life functions Taman Sari Temple. Taman Sari Temple environment as a place

Even if the weapons are highly exalted greatness was seized by the Dutch in the war Puputan Klungkung in 1908, Padma namuan decorations as symbols of power Anglayang Majapahit still present in this temple environment. Environmental temple built at the end of the seventeenth century when the king began to shift Kepakisan dynasty descended from Gelgel to as sesuhunan Klungkung in Bali.

The most important moments of the Environment recorded Taman Sari Temple is the Supreme Deity Kania wife ordered to destroy the Dutch invasion in 1849 in Kusamba. From environmental Taman Sari Temple, he assigns to use heirloom weapon called the soldiers I Seliksik Klungkung. The mission was successful assignment brilliantly, the Dutch army ravaged the coast Kusamba and the largest loss is the death of General Michiels in battle. Since restored by the Archeological Sanctuary Bali starting in 1979 the environmental beauty of this temple has been returned as usual.

The win, secured beneath Centre Court’s £80 million roof, also allowed him to return to the top of the world rankings where this week he’ll stand for a 285th week, just one short of Sampras’s record mark. All in all, not a bad day’s work for a man who had been written off as a relic in the new golden age of Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, and who had been without a Grand Slam title since collecting his 16th at the 2010 Australian Open. But Federer said he has been driven on by wanting to see his twin girls Myla Rose and Charlene Riva, who are three later this month, get the chance to witness their father in action in his pomp, not his decline. “People forget sometimes I do have twin girls. That has had a massive impact on my life. It’s helped my game more than anything because I think I’m playing some of the best tennis of my life right now,” said Federer. “But just to be able to juggle everything together has been a challenge. And I think you learn from mistakes. You try to make it work for everyone involved. Hasn’t always been easy, you know. I admit that. “The victory today is a dream come true today for me and my family and seeing them there. Yeah, it’s big.” Federer is five years older than Murray and Djokovic, who was deposed as champion at Wimbledon by the Swiss star in the semi-finals, and four years the senior of Rafael Nadal, who claimed a recored seventh French Open last month. Beating Djokovic and Murray in successive matches at the All England Club has given Federer even greater cause for optimism that the future holds even more success.

Despite Djokovic and Nadal having played in the previous four Grand Slam finals, Federer is still part of the golden age equation -- 29 of the last 30 majors have been shared amongst the three men. “I feel I have a great game. I’m so happy I’m at the age I am right now, because I had such a great run and I know there’s still more possible. “It’s very different than when I was 20 or 25. I’m at a much more stable place in my life. I wouldn’t want anything to change. So this is very, very special right now.” Federer, whose next target will be a quick return to the All England Club for the Olympics, said he never doubted that he would be back on top of the world again. “It was just a temporary thing,” said Federer, after his two and half year wait for another Grand Slam title. “I believed that maybe down t h e stretch, like with Andre Agassi (who was 32 when he won the 2003 Australian Open) it’s like a steppingstone, a period I have to go through. “I’m going to win 90% of my matches throughout the year, it’s impossible every single year. So you’re always going to go through ups and downs. “But I knew how close I was for the last few years, and some people didn’t quite see that.”

Tour de France marred by crashes, many withdrawals Associated Press

PORRENTRUY — It has always been a dangerous proposition to send nearly 200 aggressive cyclists hurtling down a road at high speed,

their featherweight bicycles inches apart. Do it in the Tour de France, cycling’s most prestigious event, and it’s a recipe for disaster. And that’s what has happened in the 99th edition of the Tour. Seven

Overall leader’s yellow jersey, British Bradley Wiggins, rides in the pack during the 157,5 km and eighth stage of the 2012 Tour de France cycling race starting in Belfort and finishing in Porrentruy, Switzerland, on July 8, 2012.

days into the race, it is shaping up as the most dangerous in decades, with 20 riders pulling out of the three-week event following crashes. Early race nerves, the stress of needing to get results to justify sponsors’ financial investment, and an overcrowded peloton are some of the reasons riders and team directors give when asked to explain it. Sunday morning only 180 of an original 198 riders took off from Belfort for the stage across the Jura mountains into Switzerland. Another two, including Olympic champion Samuel Sanchez, abandoned during the race. “The guys are really nervous the first week,” said Rein Taaramae, the Estonian who wears the white jersey as the highest placed rider under 25. He said the crashes had made the riders feel “like soldiers in a war.” The last time so many riders had abandoned this early in the race was 1998, when a whole nine-man team was thrown out of the race for

doping. There have been no doping cases so far this year, but 20 riders have abandoned because of injuries ranging from a broken pinky finger to fractured ribs and a punctured lung. By far the worst day was July 6, the sixth stage from Epernay to Metz. As the pack picked up speed to chase four breakaway riders with about 16 miles to go, at least two dozen spilled across the rural road. Many were downed and dazed. One rider said it looked like a trench hit by a grenade. Another rider whose Tour, and possibly career, ended that day was three-time world champion Oscar Freire of Spain. He was hospitalized with a punctured lung and broken ribs. Yellow jersey holder Bradley Wiggins of Britain’s Team Sky lost a key support rider on the third stage, when teammate Kanstantsin Sivtsov crashed and broke his left shin, becoming the first of this year’s casualties. Sky manager Dave Brailsford says

the first week in the Tour “is inherently risky.” “It’s a question of staying upright,” Brailsford said. Easy for him to say. Sky has been relatively unscathed by the carnage on the roads. Garmin-Sharp, which was gunning for a historic Giro-Tour double under Hesjedal’s leadership, is now searching for a reason to continue the race after also losing Danielson, the team’s “Plan B” and the highest ranking American in last year’s Tour. Garmin-Sharp is down to six riders after South African Robert Hunter injured vertebrae in Friday’s crash. Swiss rider Fabian Cancellara, himself seriously injured in a crash at the Tour of Flanders in April, is back in top form at the Tour and wore the race leader’s yellow jersey for the first seven stages. Cancellara says that this year’s Tour lacks a traditional sprinterled team such as Cavendish had last year with the now defunct HTC team, or the ones featuring Italy’s Mario Cipollini in the 1990s.

LONDON - Welsh winger Ryan Giggs will captain Britain’s soccer team at the London Olympics, head coach Stuart Pearce said on Sunday.

on July 8, 2012

The 38-year-old, oldest of the three over-age players in the 18-man squad, is taking part in his first international tournament and will captain the side for the first time when they play Brazil in a warmup at Middlesbrough on July 20. Pearce said at an Olympic presenation: “He is been a fantastic professional over the years and he was the standout candidate in a group that has got Aaron Ramsey the Wales captain, and Micah Richards who has captained Manchester City, and one or two other candidates. “He has got the respect of all the members of the group and I am looking forward to working with him.” Giggs added: “Obviously I have the experience and there are a lot of younger players in the squad, so as captain hopefully I can pass that on to the younger players. “It’s a tremendous honour to be part of the Olympics and I am really proud to be involved. Different nations have got different views about the Olympics, but as a player I am going to enjoy it and try and win it.” Giggs has won 12 Premier League titles, five FA Cups and two Champions Leagues with

However, he never played in a major championship because of Wales’ failure to reach either the World Cup or European finals during his international career which brought him 64 caps between 1991 and 2007. The match against Brazil will be the first time Britain have fielded an Olympic squad since they played Bulgaria in a qualifier in 1971 ahead of the Munich Olympics the following year. Olumide Oyedeji (C) of Nigeria scores against Dominican Republic, during their Pre-Olympic basketball game in Caracas on July 8, 2012. Nigeria won 88-73 and qualifies for London 2012 Olympic Games.

Nigeria seized the last men’s basketball berth at the London Olympics with an 8873 victory over the Dominican Republic in a last-chance game at the FIBA qualifying tournament. Nigeria had shocked favorites Greece in the quarter-finals, but were beaten in the semi-finals on Saturday by Russia -- who booked their own place with that win. Lithuania had also secured a spot on Saturday with a victory over the Dominican Republic, leaving Nigeria and the Dominicans to play one last contest for the third and final berth still up for grabs. Ike Diogu, a 10-year NBA veteran who was with the San Antonio Spurs last season before a spell with the Chinese Basketball Association’s Xinjiang Flying Tigers, led

Nigeria with 25 points and 10 rebounds. “I’m very happy. We did what had to be done,” Diogu said. “We knew we were going to face teams that are heavyweights, and we did what we needed to do - win.” Nigeria, ranked 21st in the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) world rankings, had 14 points from Al-Farouq Aminu, who plays for the New Orleans Hornets in the NBA. Yack Martinez led the Dominican Republic, coached by University of Kentucky coach John Calipari, with 16 points. Nigeria and Lithuania will play in group A in the preliminary round in London, along with the 2008 gold medallists the United States, Argentina, France and Tunisia. Russia booked a berth in group B, which includes Spain, Brazil, Australia, China and hosts Great Britain.

In a race run in welcome, if rare, dry conditions, the 35-year-old Australian steered his Red Bull through 52 laps of complex tactical and strategic racing to overtake pole sitter and longtime leader Fernando Alonso of Ferrari close to home. It was Webber’s second win this year, after triumphing at Monaco, and his second at Silverstone in three years. “Great day for us and a great day for me,” he said over the team radio. Webber’s Red Bull team-mate and defending double world champion Sebastian Vettel came home third to ensure the champions had two men on the podium. Webber’s win was watched by a capacity Silverstone crowd of 120,000 spectators who had braved torrential rain for most of the weekend. Alonso’s second place enabled him to stay on top of the drivers’ title race with 129 points ahead of Webber on 116. Felipe Massa finished fourth in the second Ferrari ahead of his former Ferrari team-mate Kimi Raikkonen and his Lotus colleague Romain Grosjean. Seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher of Mercedes finished seventh ahead of home favourite Lewis Hamilton who produced some spectacular racing on his way to eighth for McLaren.

Bruno Senna finished ninth for Williams and Jenson Button was 10th in the second McLaren. Alonso made a near-perfect start in the rare dry conditions when the lights went out. Briton Paul di Resta was the first victim of the conditions and the traffic when, on the opening lap, Grosjean collided with him. Russian Vitaly Petrov had also been forced to retire before the start when his Renault engine failed in his Caterham. Vettel was the first of the leading men to pit after 11 laps when he came in from fifth, rejoining 15th. One lap later, Massa threw his Ferrari past Schumacher at Stowe in one of many close battles before the German pitted and Pastor Maldonado appeared to lose control of his car and crash into the Sauber of luckless Mexican Sergio Perez. Both cars spun and the resultant damage left Perez forced out of the race while Maldonado, frequently involved in collisions with other drivers, steered his damaged Williams back to the pits. The stewards announced that the incident will be investigated after the race. Perez was livid with his fellow Latin American and said: “He doesn’t respect other drivers. I was already in front and he should have given space not to crash, but he tried to push me all the way. “I don’t understand why he drives like

that and I hope the stewards do something. It is not first time he has damaged my weekend. This guy will never learn if they don’t do something. He could hurt someone. Everybody has concerns about him.” Alonso pitted after 16 laps and rejoined ahead of Webber, but Hamilton stayed out on his hard tyres and inherited the lead which he fought to retain during a remarkable battle with the Spaniard on lap 19. First, Alonso passed the Briton, then Hamilton responded and regained the lead only to be re-passed by the Spaniard again in thrilling fashion. By lap 21, Alonso led Hamilton, who pitted to allow Webber back into third place. Hamilton was fast again, but as the leading cars pitted again for fresh tyres amid a flurry of fluctuating strategic decisions which also saw Alonso dash in for his set of compulsory soft tyres, 14 laps from the finish, after 38 laps. One lap later Japanese Kamui Kobayashi clattered into his own mechanics when he made a major error as he rushed into the pits. Alonso, on fast-wearing tyres, was left to struggle to preserve them in the closing laps as the field closed up and Webber moved within reach of the Spaniard, finally diving past him to take the lead at Brooklands on lap 49. That set up a thrilling finish with Webber pulling away ahead of Alonso in the final laps.

Russia to name candidates to replace Advocaat

Reuters

MOSCOW - The Russian Football Union (RFU) will name the official candidates for the national team’s coaching job on Tuesday amid intense media speculation that the coach has already been chosen. The RFU was forced to issue a statement on its website (www.rfs.ru) over the weekend, denying reports it had already signed a contract with a new coach. “Because of numerous reports about the so-called agreed candidates... and having former RFU chief (Sergei Fursenko) signing contracts with them, the RFU would like to officially state that at the moment, it has not signed any contracts with any possible candidates,” the RFU said. “Also, on Tuesday, July 10, a list of coaches will be published on the RFU’s official website and with whom the RFU will start contract negotiations.” Not a day goes by without a new name being thrown up for the job which became vacant after Dutchman Dick Advocaat’s departure following Russia’s failure to advance past the group phase at Euro 2012 last month. Former England manager Fabio Capello, Machester City boss Roberto Mancini, former Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola and Zenit St Petersburg’s Italian coach Luciano Spalletti are among those linked to the job by the local media.

LONDON - A Saudi princess, the granddaughter of the nation’s founder, is seeking asylum in Britain over fears she could be persecuted by members of her family at home, the Sunday Telegraph reported.

From page 1 The FBI, as well as Facebook, Google, Internet service providers and security firms have been scrambling to warn users about the problem and direct them to fixes. According to a working group set up by experts, more than 300,000 computers remained infected as of June 11. The largest number were in the United States (69,000), but more than a dozen countries -- including Australia, Britain, Canada, France, Germany, India and Italy -- are also believed to have infected computers. Security experts say it is not clear how many of those computers are active. “Reaching victims is a very hard

(kmb30)

From page 1 Mudita hoped the agencies related to geothermal issue could come down and give assurance to residents. The IMF leader is visiting Indonesia from July 8 to 10 is to ask for a loan aid of US$1 billion offered by the government, when the country is yet to deal with a host of domestic problems, Dewi Aryani said. The government is offering “good thing” to IMF when the people are suffering from hunger, and has yet to cope with high un-

employment, more workers losing jobs and rising prices, she said here on Sunday. “The government should first think how to deal with domestic problems before thinking of doing something good for others,” she said. She demanded that the government explain openly the benefit it hopes from such offer.

visit to his Indonesian counterpart Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in Jakarta on Monday.

It was stated this damaged road have been causing injuries from time to time moreover it has no lighting at all. There were issues that this road will be covered by a hot-mix on it but it is still unknown when it will be. by Tabanan Representative from the village, Wayan Sudira, who got the information about it.

Dogs may protect babies from some infections: study Agence France-Presse

(ole)

(kmb25)
