LONDON - Dressed in Hogwarts robes and waving wands, eager fans got a first glimpse of the next instalment in the Harry Potter saga, giving a new London stage production glowing reviews.

“Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” brings back to life author J.K. Rowling’s magical world of wizards and witches, set 19 years after her last book about the muchloved character and his friends Ron and Hermione.

The play, the eighth story in the series, opened for previews on Tuesday night at London’s Palace Theatre, outside which queues snaked for metres as those who secured the first tickets waited anxiously to get in.

The play, split into two parts, follows the three friends into adulthood, with Potter now described as an overworked Ministry of Magic employee, coping with his youngest son Albus’ struggles with his famous family’s legacy.

Little else has been revealed and Rowling, whose books were turned into box office hit movies, has asked that audiences do not spoil the story for others.

“I really liked the films but after seeing this, I would say, forget the films,” fan Callum Fawcett said.

“This is fantastic ... It’s got everything.”

On Twitter, Rowling said the reaction to the first preview was “wonderful”.

First strikes, then floods, now trash: Paris in ordure fight

PARIS — After a rough couple of months that have included protests, fuel shortages, rail strikes and once-in-a-generation floods, France’s capital is facing a new challenge: Piles of uncollected garbage.

A new wave of strikes is disrupting trash collection in Paris with only two days to go until the European Championship soccer tournament, a sporting event predicted to draw 2.5 million spectators.

in the French capital Wednesday and trash bag barricades set up in front of waste facilities. France’s CGT union said that four out of the six garages housing Paris’ garbage trucks — 300 vehicles in all — had been blocked as part of a more than week-long protest. The mayor’s

The CGT said similar strike action is hindering trash collection in the French cities of Marseille, SaintEtienne and Aix-en-Provence.

French life has been disrupted for weeks by industrial action affecting trains and gas stations.

A huge flood hit the capital last week, briefly shutting museums and drowning the Seine River’s embankments.

The floods have drained away, but the protests have not. Many are aimed at securing the withdrawal of France’s labor reform law, which opponents see as eroding France’s social protections.

But other groups — including railway workers and Air France staff — are hoping to win concessions as the Euros get underway.

Speaking to lawmakers Wednesday about the railway strike, which the government had hoped to resolve ahead of the tournament,

BLH Buleleng dredges siltation of Lake Buyan

SINGARAJA - The Buleleng Environment Agency (BLH) began to clean up water hyacinth and dredge the siltation of Lake Buyan, Pancasari. The cleanup is done by the BLH Buleleng by borrowing an amphibious excavator from the Bali-Penida River Agency (BWS). This heavy equipment has been in operation to clean up the water hyacinth and dredge siltation in the lake area since Saturday (Jun. 4).

Priority of the dredging and water hyacinth cleanup is focused on the east side near the wantilan hall of Ulun Danu to the sluice of embankment at the edge of the lake. This location is experiencing severe siltation to raise a mound. In addition, the east side of the lake area is also overgrown with water hyacinth and water lettuce. Due to this siltation, the water lake begins to shrink estimated to reach three meters.

The Head of the BLH Buleleng, Nyoman Surya Temaja, explained on Wednesday afternoon (Jun. 8) that the borrowing of heavy equipment like the amphibious excavator is believed to be able to cleanse the water hyacinth and water lettuce currently covering up the inundation of the lake and normalize the lake area. So far, there is no specific target of time for normalizing the second lake of Buleleng. However, the heavy equipment will continue to work until the dredging is deemed sufficient. “We’ll do the cleanup to be deemed sufficient, so that the lake area can return to its original condition,” he said.

On the other hand, Surya Temaja said that siltation of Lake Buyan is caused by mudflow occurred during rainy season in previous years. Such condition is aggravated by the area around the Lake Buyan having been

converted into agricultural land to cultivate vegetables. Mudflow from the agricultural area draining into the lake continues to accumulate. The worst condition occurs on the east side near the dike of sluice gates.

In the meantime, he admitted that the effort to clean up the water hyacinth and water lettuce by involving fishermen groups is considered less maximal. This occurs because the proliferation of water hyacinth and water lettuce is too fast and not comparable to the handling by using net manually.

“Siltation is quite apparent after the water recedes and overgrown with grass, so that the lake looks to narrow. With this heavy equipment, we are sure to be able to handle the problems occurred in this region,” he explained.

A local community leader of Pancasari village, Wayan Indrawan, said that the lake area spread across approximately 3.9 square kilometers. This area is estimated to have reduced due to severe siltation. To that end, he welcomed the effort of dredging the siltation and weeding.

“Indeed the siltation is severe and we support this dredging. Hopefully, it could run optimally, so that the lake can return to normal as ever before,” said this PDI-P politician nicknamed as Kejes. (kmb38)

Late rock star David Bowie honored at NY fashion awards ceremony NEW YORK - Fashion designers paid tribute to David Bowie, the late British rock star and style icon who died of cancer earlier this year, at an awards ceremony recognizing people whose influence impacted the industry.

Actress Tilda Swinton accepted the Board of Director’s Tribute Award on behalf of Bowie’s widow, Iman, at the 2016 Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) Awards on Monday night at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York.

Michael C. Hall, one of the stars of “Lazarus,” the musical Bowie had worked before his death in January at the age of 69, also performed.

“David Bowie was an influence on everything. He was a culture event - his music, everything he was and we miss him,” designer Diane von Furstenberg said on the red carpet.

Bowie won fame for hits such as “Space Oddity” and plaudits for trend-setting pop personas like “Ziggy Stardust” and pushed the boundaries of rock, fashion, art and drama for decades.

Veteran designer Donna Karan received the Founder’s Award.

Price of imported fruits skyrockets

AMLAPURA - The prices of fruits have skyrocketed since two days before Buda Wage Kelawu falling on Wednesday (Jun. 8).

As observation until Tuesday (Jun. 7) at a number of traditional markets in Karangasem, the rising prices of imported fruits are precisely the highest.

At Karangsokong Market, Subagan, the price of red apple penetrated IDR 70,000 per kg while on normal days it only reached round tens of thousands of rupiahs.

Fuji apple surged to IDR 80,000 per kg from IDR 28,000.

Pondoh snakefruit is sold for IDR 16,000 per kg, while the snakefruit of Karangasem is around IDR 20,000 per kg, while sugar snakefruit reaches IDR

60,000. However, the stock of both local snakefruits is very limited because it is beyond the season.

Kintamani tangerine in the Karangasem market is sold for IDR 30,000 per kg and Malang apple for IDR 30,000 per kg, while the price of bananas for the purpose of filling in the offerings reaches IDR 10,000 per four pieces.

The surge in the price of fruits happened because many people held ritual on Wednesday. On the other hand, the production of local fruits is very limited because the season of fruits has passed. There are no mango and rambutan, but the Karangasem market is flooded by imported fruits. (013)

NEW YORK — In a surprise appearance, Beyonce strode onstage in sparkling pinstripes Monday evening to speak emotionally about both family and fashion at the annual Council of Fashion Designers of America awards ceremony.

“As long as I can remember, fashion has always been a part of my life,” the pop superstar, who was honored with the Fashion Icon award, told a glittery crowd of designers, TV stars and other celebrities. She went on to recount how her grandmother had been a seamstress, and then passed that skill on to Beyonce’s mother.

“When we were starting out in Destiny’s Child, high-end labels, they didn’t really want to dress four black, country curvy girls,” she said. “And we couldn’t afford designer dresses and couture. My mother ... used her talent and her creativity to give her children their dreams.” She spoke of wearing her first costumes, which her mother and uncle had designed and sewn, “putting so much passion and love into every detail.” It felt, she said, “like an extra suit of armor. It was so much deeper than any brand name.”

Usually, organizers announce the name of the Fashion Icon winner well in advance, but this year they kept it under wraps until the end of the ceremony, when designer Diane von Furstenberg took the stage to introduce Beyonce, saying she represented everything

women aspire to be. “The image of a woman in charge has never looked more glamorous,” the designer said.

The surprise honoree was one highlight of an evening that also included a touching tribute to the late David Bowie, from his friend, actress Tilda Swinton. Swinton’s speech took the form of a letter she’d written to the singer, telling him he was being honored “for all your colors, all your magic, all your vim and vigor.”

“This is a good thing: You have brought out the freak in everyone,” Swinton said. Her tribute was followed by a performance of Bowie’s song “Changes” by actor Michael C. Hall, a star of Bowie’s musical, “Lazarus.”

And another recently departed rock legend was also memorialized in Monday’s ceremony: Prince, who received a musical tribute from Jennifer Hudson to close out the show, including a rousing rendition of his song “Let’s Go Crazy.”

There was one brief, but enthusiastic reference to politics, when Vogue editor Anna Wintour took the stage to present the International Award to Alessandro Michele of Gucci. But first, she wanted to tell the crowd the news that had broken during the ceremony — reports of Hillary Clinton becoming the presumptive Democratic nominee based on delegate counts. Wintour, long active in Democratic Party fundraising,

raised her arms in triumph.

In major awards, Marc Jacobs won the prize for womenswear designer of the year, accepting his trophy in a black T-shirt. “Marc, we have your tux backstage,” quipped the evening’s host, comedian and actor Joel McHale.

The menswear prize went to Thom Browne, and the accessory prize to Rachel Mansur and Floriana Gavriel.

Norma Kamali, famous for her “sleeping bag” coats and her swimsuits — including the red one actress Farrah Fawcett wore in her famous poster — received the lifetime achievement award from presenter Michael Kors, and Donna Karan was handed the Founder’s Award from friend and designer Calvin Klein.

The three Swarovski awards for emerging designers went to Paul Andrew for accessories, to the Orley label for menswear, and to Brandon Maxwell for womenswear. Maxwell, Lady Gaga’s stylist, spoke movingly about growing up “very gay in a very small town” in Texas, where styling his female friends gave him a sense of purpose in life.

But the show’s finale was all about Beyonce, who along with her glittering pantsuit wore a large, black wide-brimmed hat.

She praised fashion designers for being, in her words, fairy godmothers, magicians, sculptors — “and sometimes even our therapists.” (ap)

The high waves began to happen around 13:00. Some houses located close to the embankment of Kelod hamlet, Jungut Batu, were damaged as swept away by the waves. A number of residents had a chance to capture the moment happening for the first time.

When confirmed to the headman of Jungut Batu, Made Suryawan, he justified the brunt of waves indeed occurred in the region. However, the

incident only took place for a few hours and then gradually returned to normal.

Such huge waves caused some points of revetment in the region of Jungut Batu to be more seriously damaged. Associated with the damaged dike, Made Suryawan asked for the government’s attention. He hoped the government can build revetment with a pedestrian in order to support the tourism in Nusa Penida.

“If possible, the pedestrian is made like the one on Sanur Beach, Denpasar,” he hoped while adding that tourist visit to Jungut Batu village is now increasingly crowded.

The Head of the Klungkung Public Works Agency, I Gusti Supartana, when contacted he justified there will be a project of coastal embankment development in 2016 at Jungut Batu village. The project will be worked on by the province with a budget worth IDR 2 billion. “This project is meant to create something new,” he added. High waves run into coastal areas of Jembrana

NEGARA - High waves engulfing the coastal areas of Jembrana since the past three days has an impact on some beaches in Jembrana.

Residents living in the coastal areas admitted the waves were the worst.

Aside from flooding road, the high tide also has an impact on abrasion and breaking off local roads.

From the information compiled on Wednesday (Jun. 8), the impact of seawater occurred almost along the coastal areas of Jembrana. At Perancak, a fisherman, I Ketut Narna, 51, virtually disappeared when his boat was hit by high waves

at sea. He could survive after being approached and helped by another fisherman, I Ketut Widana, 50. One meter-high wave crashed his boat to be destroyed. He had sunk and eventually rose to the ruins of his boat while waiting for another passing boat. He has been bobbing at sea about four hours until the boat of Widana passed and helped him. As a result of the accident, the victim suffered a loss worth millions of rupiahs.

Other than at Perancak, the impact of high waves also hit the coastal areas of Delod Berawah. Along this

coast, the high tide inundated the road. Thorny trees protecting the coast were swept away by the waves.

Seawater crept up onto the road and reached a number of buildings on the street side. Water flooded the road as high as 30 cm, so that the road could not be passed through. At that location there is a row of cafe buildings. According to a local resident, the high waves have occurred since three days before. “Usually this happens for three days and this afternoon will surely recede. But the waves are high,” said Putu Edi. At Pengambengan, high waves

broke off the road access at the fishing village of Ketapang hamlet. High waves have crashed onto mainland since the past two days. “Now, the road has broken off as totally eroded by the abrasion. Within the past two days the waves are big enough,” explained Aan, a local resident, Wednesday (Jun. 8).

As field observation, the road with the width of 2.5 meters only remained a few centimeters. The macadam asphalt layer looked to flake off due to the brunt of seawater.

By the people, that location has been installed a warning sign made of

wood and bamboo.

At least along 25 meters of the land disappeared due to the high waves. “Usually the waves begin to emerge before midday or around ten o’clock,” added Aan. Larger waves occur at night, especially in the full moon.

Although the condition has been severe, some residents mostly consisting of fishermen still choose to live in their house on the edge of the beach. “There is no other choice and every night the seawater crashes the wall of our house,” said Juhri, a surviving resident. (kmb26)

The officers of Gianyar Police are still further investigated the testimony of the five people. As initial testimony, they claimed to surrender because of being overshadowed by anxiety.

The five people surrendering consist of I Wayan Buda Artama, 24, I Gede Nyoman Suka Artha Yasa, 23, Kadek Juniantara, 22, I Made Edi Ariyanta, 30, and Made Putra Mardana, 32. They all surrendered on Tuesday night around 22:45 accompanied by their legal counsel, Situmorang. The conspiracy alleged to be the offenders surrendered with some evidences including two blades.

“Yes, the five surrendering people claimed to be the murderers at Dentiyis hamlet, accompanied by a lawyer,” said Chief of Gianyar Police, Waluya, Wednesday (Jun. 8).

After the surrender, police immediately examined the testimony of the conspiracy and adjusted to the evidences in the field. Chief of the district police affirmed that his ranks do not believe as such in the statement of the five people. To make sure, the criminal investigation unit of Gianyar Police also made coordination with forensic laboratory of Bali Police.

Chief Waluyo admitted to still make further investigation against the perpetrators about the possibility if such an action was planned, let alone the perpetrators were chasing the victim to pass through winding alley as far as hundreds of meters.

“We will check further about the motive if there is a revenge to plan or not, including if the victim had been followed from afar we are still investigating,” he explained.

Then, what is the reason for the five perpetrators to surrender?

Chief Waluya said that in the last examination the five people admitted to have been always overshadowed by the victim in their dreams.

“At first, the perpetrator dreamed of being overshadowed so that he eventually pleaded his friends to surrender,” he said.

When asked if the perpetrators are overshadowed with the fear of other mass organization, chief police admitted to still further investigate about that matter. “Whether the perpetrators are becoming the target, I do not know because I have no time to ask them. The Ujung Water Palace in Karangasem is one of the tourist attractions thronged by students and adult travelers.

After seven decades on the throne, King Bhumibol is seen by many Thais as a pillar of stability, and accorded semi-divine status.

But the kingdom marks his platinum jubilee on Thursday amid anxiety over his health and at a critical political juncture.

Celebrations will include a morning religious ceremony presided over by 770 Buddhist monks, a figure seen as auspicious.

The festivities will serve as a reminder to Thais of their relationship to a king who is regarded as integral to Thailand’s identity and a father-figure to the nation.

It may also jangle nerves about the succession, as most Thais have

known no other monarch. The king received heart treatment on Tuesday and has been in hospital for more than a year.

Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn, the king’s 63-year-old son, is the heir apparent. He has not achieved the same level of devotion that his father enjoys.

“The relationship between Thais and the king is deep, more than one can actually begin to explain,” Colonel Winthai Suvaree, a spokesman for the royalist junta, told Reuters.

“He is a father to the land.”

The monarchy has not always been held so highly in Thailand.

In 1946, at the age of 18, King

Bhumibol inherited a throne that had barely survived the upheaval of the end of absolute monarchy in 1932.

That marked what an official biography of the king described as a nadir for the monarchy.

Over the following decades, the king earned the adoration of millions through work in public health and rural development, and with the help of a formidable public relations machine that returned the monarchy to prominence in a country where politics, was, and still is, largely dominated by the military.

The military has staged 19 coups or attempted coups since the end of absolute monarchy, often evoking its loyalty to the crown and defence of the monarchy in explaining its actions. (rtr)

AMLAPURA - The Ujung Water Palace in Karangasem is one of the tourist attractions thronged by students and adult travelers. Ahead of the academic yearend holiday, the number of visit by local travelers mostly consisting of students jumped 100 percent. As a result, ticket attendants were overwhelmed.

It is revealed by Chief of Ujung Water Palace Management, Nyoman Matal, Wednesday (Jun. 8).

He said the surge of visitors in the past few days reached 100 percent. He added that daily average of the visit by students reached 3,000-3,500 people. Actually, on normal days the number of visitors both local and foreign travelers only reaches around 500 to 1,000 people. This former chairman of the Karangasem House of Representatives from Seraya village said that the students making a visit also organized a farewell party with the

six graders, ninth graders or twelfth graders under coordination of their teachers.

Matal hoped that in the next few days, visitors especially the group of students continue to come to the Ujung Water Palace. The students do not just make a leisure visit, but also do a study.

Aside from looking beautiful, this water palace also poses a historical heritage. This water palace was built by the last king of

Karangasem, namely AAAA Ketut Karangasem approximately in 1900. In the past, the water palace was destroyed mainly due to the earthquake and eruption of Mount Agung in 1963. However, ten years ago it was already reconstructed and preserved until these days. For the purpose of preservation, it has been arranged and the final arrangement was made to parking lot on the east of the river.

All this time, the holiday visits are dominated by students. Groups of students are dominated by those from outside Karangasem. They generally want a relatively convenient tourist attraction and not too crowded. Students or children making a visit to this attraction are only charged an admission ticket worth IDR 5,000 per person. (013)

Japan protests after Chinese warship sails near disputed East China Sea islands

TOKYO - Japan summoned the Chinese ambassador early on Thursday to express concern after a Chinese navy ship sailed close to what Japan considers its territorial waters in the East China Sea for the first time, increasing tensions over the disputed area.

Japan said a Chinese frigate sailed within 24 miles (38 kms) of the contested territory, the islands known as the Senkaku in Japan and the Diaoyu in China, shortly after midnight.

Japan’s Vice Foreign Minister Akitaka Saiki summoned the Chinese ambassador in Tokyo at around 2 a.m. (1700 GMT Wednesday) to “express a serious concern,” the government said in a statement.

Japanese and Chinese coastguard vessels frequently face off around the islands as both sides press their claims. Until now neither has dispatched warships to nearby waters, because doing so would inflame tensions and remove a buffer against potential armed conflict.

“We are worried that this action raises tensions to a higher level,” Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said at a regular press briefing in Tokyo.

“Related ministries are working together to deal with this and we will work closely with the U.S.,” Suga said.

China’s Defence Ministry said on Thursday it was looking into the reports that one of its navy ships sailed close to the disputed islands, adding its navy had every right to operate in Chinese waters.

“Chinese naval ships sailing through waters our country has jurisdiction over is reasonable and legal. No other country has the right to make thoughtless remarks about this,” it said in a statement sent to Reuters.

While the U.S. has not endorsed Tokyo’s territorial claim to the islands, which lie about 220 kms (135 miles) northeast of Taiwan, it has said the Japanese-controlled territory falls under its security treaty with Tokyo that obligates Washington to defend Japan against attack.

“We are aware of the reports and have been in touch with the Japanese government,” U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, Colin Willett told reporters by telephone from Washington.

“Until I have a little more detail, I can’t really comment on exactly what (Washington’s) reaction is,” she added.

The Chinese frigate stayed in the waters around the Senkaku/Diaoyu waters for about an hour before sailing toward the Chinese coast.

Countries can police their contiguous zone, adjacent to the disputed territory, for customs and immigration violations, but can’t prevent passage by other nations’ vessels. (rtr)

Search for Swiss climber reported missing on Mt Semeru continued

With debt payment looming, House weighs Puerto Rico bill WASHINGTON — House Republican leaders and President Barack Obama pressured lawmakers in both parties to back legislation to help ease Puerto Rico’s financial crisis as the U.S. territory faces a $2 billion debt payment in just over three weeks.

The House was scheduled to begin debate Thursday on a bill that would create a financial control board and restructure some of Puerto Rico’s $70 billion debt. Republican and Democratic leaders support it, as does the Obama administration, but it faces opposition from both sides, as well, as some bondholders, unions and island officials who have lobbied against the bill.

Speaker Paul Ryan will need significant support from his own caucus as well as most Democrats to get the bill passed. He has argued the legislation is the only way to avoid an eventual taxpayer bailout for the island.

Obama summoned House Democrats with ties to Puerto Rico to a meeting in the Oval Office Wednesday. One of those, Rep. Luis Gutierrez, is an outspoken opponent of the legislation, saying he doesn’t believe it will do enough for ordinary Puerto Ricans.

Puerto Rico’s representative in Congress, Pedro Pierluisi, is supporting the bill despite opposition from other lawmakers on the island.

“He made absolutely clear that there is no ‘Plan B’ here,” Pierluisi said of Obama.

Puerto Rico, which has struggled to overcome a lengthy recession, has missed several payments to creditors and faces the $2 billion installment on July 1. The economic crisis has forced businesses to close, driven up the employment rate and sparked an exodus of hundreds of thousands of people to the U.S. mainland. Schools lack electricity and some hospitals have said they can’t provide adequate drugs or care. The island’s only active air ambulance company announced Tuesday that it has suspended its services.

Ahead of the vote, Republicans said they had enough support from both parties for passage. Supporters were bolstered by a 29-10 vote in the House Natural Resources Committee on May 25.(ap)

Michigan Legislature OKs $617M bailout for Detroit schools

LANSING — The Michigan Legislature narrowly approved a $617 million bailout and restructuring of Detroit’s debt-ridden school district early Thursday, two years after the state spent less than a third of that amount to help the city government emerge from bankruptcy.

The legislation goes to Gov. Rick Snyder for his expected signature. The Republican-controlled Senate passed a main bill 19-18 late Wednesday, and the GOP-led House followed with a similar razor-thin 55-54 vote. Some Republicans joined all Democrats in opposition during an emotional debate that brought some lawmakers to tears.

Snyder, who had warned legislators that insolvency would be disastrous for students and the state if the district ran short of money this summer — as it would have without further intervention — said in a statement that the measure is a “fresh start” and an “unprecedented investment for the education of Detroit’s children.”

The financially and academically ailing 46,000-student Detroit Public Schools has been managed by the

state for seven years, during which it has continued to face plummeting enrollment, deficits and, more recently, teacher sick-out protests.

Under the bills, the district would be split in two and control would be returned to an elected school board. A commission of state appointees would oversee the district’s finances, similar to how it now reviews the city’s budgeting as part of a $195 million state rescue in 2014.

The new debt-free district would educate students. The old district would stay intact for tax-collection purposes to retire $617 million in debt over 8½ years, including $150 million in transition costs to launch the new Detroit Community Schools.

Furious Democrats accused “coward” Republicans of bowing to the politically influential school-choice

lobby in dropping a proposed commission of mayoral appointees to regulate the opening of new schools — including independent, publicly funded charters that have drawn students and funding away from traditional neighborhood schools.

Sen. Bert Johnson, a Highland Park Democrat who represents part of Detroit, said the legislation is “paternalistic” and “unethical.”

“If you do this, you are systematically spelling the end of the Detroit Public Schools system,” he said. “Parents are already concerned. ... I think it’s going to drive enrollment further into the ground.”

But majority Republicans said bankruptcy would have been the worst possible outcome.

“I know many will weigh in with opinions on how we could have done better, and (we) all hear criticism about this compromise. But at the end of the day, our responsibility is to solve the problem,” said Senate Majority Leader Arlan Meekhof, a West Olive Republican.(ap)

LUMAJANG - A group of search workers continued their effort to find missing Swiss climber named Lionel Du Creaux on Thursday by focusing their search on a 75-meter-deep ravine of Mount Semeru in Lumajang District, East Java. “Our search is now focused on a ravine called Blank 75 because many climbers go missing there on their way back from Mount Semerus peak,” Head of Lumajang Districts Disaster Mitigation Agency Hendro Wahyono said.

The search for the 26-year-old climber that his friend named Alice Guignard from French reported his missing to the authorities of Ranupani post on June 7 was conducted through Tawon Songo and Ranupani tracks, he said.

Alice Guignard herself was found alive by a climber named Heri Sumantri and his friends after hearing her scream on June 6. Alice was then helped go down to Ranupani post, the first of 10 along the Semeru track, he said.

Lionel and Alice attempted to climb the peak of the 3,676 meterhigh mountain, located at the border of Lumajang and Malang Districts in East Java Province, together but Alice decided not to continue her effort after knowing that she chose the wrong track, he said.

Instead, Lionel kept climbing. The two climbers were reported not to inform the authorities of Ranupani Post about their intention to climb to the peak of Mount Semeru.(ant)

Indonesia, Australia agree to increase cooperation in counter-terrorism

JAKARTA - Indonesia and Australia have agreed to step up cooperation in the fields of intelligence and counter-terrorism.

The agreement was reached at the 2nd Australia-Indonesia Ministerial Council on Law and Security meeting in Sydney on Wednesday.

The Indonesian delegation to the meeting was led by Coordinating Minister for Political, Security and Legal Affairs Luhut Pandjaitan along with other members, including National Police Chief General Badrodin Haiti, head of the National Anti-Terrorism Agency (BNN), Commissioner General Tito Karnavian, and Director General of Immigration of the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights, Ronny F Sompie.

“The meeting went very well

and we extensively discussed issues such as counter-terrorism, cooperation in the field of intelligence and capacity improvement in several fields. The meeting was very important for both the parties, considering the encouraging achievements made in the last one year,” Minister Luhut said in a press release issued after the meeting and received by ANTARA. The Australian delegation to the meeting was led by the countrys Attorney General, George Brandis, who was also accompanied

by Australias Minister of Justice Michael Keenan.

As in the first meeting last year, several security and legal is-

sues were talked about, including counter-terrorism, cyber security and intelligence operation.

“We exchanged information about threats in the region and commitment to strengthen intelligence cooperation between Indonesia and Australia so that the problem of terrorism could be overcome.

We also discussed issues of funding, de-radicalization and cyber crimes,” Brandis disclosed.

He reiterated that the two countries were keen to prevent acts of terror in their respective countries.

Citing an example of achieving success in overcoming terrorist threats, Minister Luhut referred to the mapping of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) in Southeast Asia, led by Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

“There are around 500 Indo-

nesians in Syria and they want to establish a caliphate in Southeast Asia. We have successfully mapped them. We have exchanged this information with Australia,” Luhut informed.

Australias Minister of Justice and also Special Minister for Terrorism Affairs, Michael Keenan, underlined that both the countries face threats from international terrorist organizations.

“We are facing terrorists from the Middle East who have clearly declared war against other countries and have attacked our friends and neighbors. This cooperation will help respond to such threats. This is our opportunity to learn about implementation of law and build intelligence cooperation and we will keep collaborating,” he stated.

On questions about flow of

funds for terror activities from Australia to Indonesia, Minister Luhut noted that the matter was still being investigated by the two countries.

“Our parliaments right now are in the process of revising the anti-terrorism law that will allow law enforcers to arrest a person or a group suspected of planning to conduct any act of terror. The old law prohibits it. We hope the revision process would be finished next month,” Luhut enunciated in reply to a reporters question. The two sides stated that the meeting yielded concrete results.

The first meeting took place in Indonesia last year. This is a forum to coordinate cooperation and define the two countries responsibilities regarding international security, especially terrorism.(ant)

President wants transportation infrastructure to be modernized

JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo has expressed his wish to usher a major change in the transportation infrastructure in Indonesia, especially in key cities, making it more modern and in line with the peoples wishes.

“We would like to alter everything, but the ground plan will have to integrate the existing means of transportation,” the president stated

in his opening speech at a closed door meeting about transport infrastructure in the Jabodetabek region, held in the presidential office in Jakarta on Wednesday.

He expressed the view that it was high time the transport infrastructure in Indonesia was developed in such a way that it fulfilled three main functions of connectivity, integration between different means

of transportation and modernization.

“The first function is connectivity between regions since better connected regions will ensure economically more efficient movement, besides lowering logistical and transportation costs, thus improving our competitiveness,” he explained.

Second focus will be to achieve

integration between different means of transportation, which President Widodo deems very important.

“If we can connect air traffic with railways, and then with MRT and LRT, along with buses and harbors, the transportation will run much smoother. Such a mode of planning must surely be introduced,” he noted.

The President thinks that it is

time for Indonesia to build modern airports, harbors, stations and terminals with enough capacity to cater to the peoples needs. His plans also include expanding existing terminals, docks and runways.

“This modernization drive is also about enhancing security and making public transport more convenient for passengers,” he concluded.(ant)

Israel suspends Palestinian entry permits after Tel Aviv attack

JERUSALEM - The Israeli military on Thursday revoked permits for 83,000 Palestinians to visit Israel and said it would send hundreds more troops to the occupied West Bank after a Palestinian shooting attack that killed four Israelis in Tel Aviv.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the assault by the two gunmen on Wednesday in a trendy shopping and dining market near Israel’s Defence Ministry, but Hamas and other Palestinian militant groups were quick to praise it.

The assailants came from near Hebron, in the Israeli-occupied West Bank. They dressed in suits and ties and posed as customers at a restaurant before pulling out automatic weapons and opening fire, sending diners fleeing in panic.

The dead included two women and two men, while six people were wounded. The attack followed a lull in recent weeks after what had been near-daily stabbings and shootings on Israeli streets. It was the deadliest incident in eight months.

The attackers, cousins in their 20s

who security experts said appeared to have entered Israel without permits, were quickly apprehended. One of them was shot and wounded.

“It is clear that they spent time planning and training and choosing their target,” Barak Ben-Zur, former head of research at Israel’s Shin Bet domestic security agency, told reporters.

“They got some support, although we don’t know for sure who their supporters are,” he said, adding that they appeared to have used improvised automatic weapons smuggled into Israel.

The attack, as families were enjoying a balmy evening out at the open-air Sarona complex, took place just a couple of hundred yards from the fortified Defence Ministry in the heart of Tel Aviv,

which has seen far less violence than Jerusalem.

After security consultations overseen by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the military said it was rescinding some 83,000 permits issued to Palestinians from the West Bank to visit relatives in Israel during the ongoing Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

It also announced that two battalions would be deployed in the West Bank by the end of the day to reinforce troops stationed in the area, where the military maintains a network of checkpoints and often carries out raids to arrest suspected militants. Israeli battalions are comprised of around 300 troops.

Such measures, including restrictions on access to Jerusalem’s Aqsa Mosque compound, the holy site in the heart of the Old City that Jews refer to as Temple Mount, have in the past lead to increased tension with the Palestinians. (rtr)

French finmin tells workers: No sense in strikes as growth picks up

PARIS - France’s Finance Minister, Michel Sapin, urged workers to end a wave of nationwide strikes, saying on Thursday the walkouts risked undermining signs of stronger growth and falling unemployment.

Rubbish piled up in parts of Paris as stoppages and pickets blocked waste treatment plants in one of a series of protests in different industries against plans to loosen labour market regulations, a reform the government hopes will help lower the jobless rate further from 10 percent.

Sapin said the latest data showing 159,000 jobs were created in the first three months of 2016, more than in any quarter since early 2008.

“Unemployment is falling.

This is not the moment to throw a spanner into the works with growth picking up,” Sapin told France Info radio.

On the eve of the month-long Euro 2016 soccer championship, the government was working overtime to thrash out a deal on working conditions with the SNCF state rail company and end a 9-day strike.

Workers, many of them from the hardline CGT union, briefly blockaded France’s largest wholesale food market south of Paris while Air France pilots planned a four-day stoppage starting on Saturday, the day after the soccer contest opens.

Despite signs that broader strike action against labour law reform spearheaded by the hardline CGT union was running out of steam, train services remained disrupted as millions of foreign visitors and soccer fans prepare for the month-long tournament that kicks off on Friday evening.

Asked about the consequences for growth, Sapin said: “Broadly speaking, the strikes are having no impact.”

He reiterated that the government would not cave in on its proposals to make hiring and firing easier and hand companies more power to negotiate pay and work conditions locally, which could weaken the influence of unions in the work place.

Sharapova banned for two years by ITF

LONDON - The career of Russian former world number one Maria Sharapova was in tatters on Wednesday after she was given a two-year ban by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) following her positive test for the banned drug meldonium.

In a statement the ITF said the five-times grand slam champion’s ban would be backdated to Jan. 26 this year, meaning her results and prize money from the Australian Open, where she reached the quarter-finals, would be cancelled out.

Sharapova, 29, said she would appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), describing the punishment as “unfairly harsh”.

She said an independent tribunal in London on May 18-19 had found that she had not intentionally violated anti-doping rules.

A 33-page report of the tribunal’s findings said: “The ITF accepts that the player did not engage in conduct that she knew constituted an antidoping rule violation,” but it rejected her assertion that there was no “significant” fault on her part.

“She was the sole author of her own misfortune,” it said.

On its website, the ITF said the ban, which could have been as long as four years, had been backdated due to Sharapova’s “prompt admission” of taking the substance, and would end on midnight of Jan. 25, 2018.

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) later issued a short statement saying it would review the decision before deciding whether to use its independent right of appeal to CAS. LONDON - Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo has put his Monaco misery behind him and is hoping for another epic battle with Lewis Hamilton in Montreal this weekend.

Two weeks after taking a first Formula One pole position, only to lose out on victory for the second race running due to no fault of his own, the smiling Australian returns to the scene of his first grand prix victory in a feisty mood.

Triple world champion Hamilton, aiming for a fifth Canadian Grand Prix win after also taking his first career triumph at the Circuit Gilles Villenueve, and his Mercedes team mate Nico Rosberg will be favourites again.

But Ricciardo reckons he can be a contender, particularly at a track where the weather can act as a leveller. Temperatures are forecast to be cool with some rain.

“Now that I’ve sort of got over Monaco I just want to get back in the car and basically smash it and get amongst it,” Ricciardo said on social media.

“You’re going to see the same intensity that you saw in Monaco.

I plan on keeping that up and not letting anything else get in the way,” added the Australian, whose 18-year-old Dutch team mate Max Verstappen won in Barcelona.

Renault’s latest specification engine, which Red Bull use with Tag Heuer branding, has provided a good boost in horsepower to help close the gap.

Canada has been a rollercoaster for Ricciardo in the past, his breakthrough win in 2014 followed by 13th last year when Hamilton won from pole position. He was 15th in 2013.

Hamilton has the momentum from Monaco and is a renowned

master of Montreal while Rosberg, 24 points clear at the top, will want to hit back after two races without a podium.

Another win for either would take Mercedes level with Red Bull in the all-time lists, on 51 each, but the champions know the pressure is on.

“The main thing we took away (from Monaco) was the very real threat from Red Bull,” said team boss Toto Wolff. “It took a bold strategy, a big push from Lewis and an even bigger slice of luck with Daniel’s slow pitstop to get us that win.

“We have no breathing space in this championship.”

Ferrari hope to add to the pressure, after their early promise fell off. Monaco, with Kimi Raikkonen retiring and Sebastian Vettel fourth, was their worst result of the season. (rtr)

Coutinho’s hat trick leads Brazil over Haiti 7-1 in Copa ORLANDO — This was a 7-1 scoreline Brazil could enjoy. Philippe Coutinho scored his first international hat trick, Renato Augusto had two goals and Brazil routed Haiti 7-1 Wednesday night in the Copa America. Coutinho scored in the 14th and 29th minutes to build a 2-0 lead, then added a goal on a 20yard drive in the second minute of second-half stoppage time. The Liverpool midfielder’s only previous goal for Brazil was against Mexico in an exhibition on June 7 last year.

Gabriel Barbosa and Lucas Lima also scored for Brazil in a scoreline that matched the devastating defeat for the Selecao in the 2014 World Cup semifinals against Germany at Belo Horizonte.

Former Liverpool & Denmark defender Agger quits football COPENHAGEN — Denmark captain and former Liverpool defender Daniel Agger says he is ending his career at the age of 31. Agger says at a news conference on Thursday, “It has been tough (decision) but I am pulling the plug.”

UEFA bid to invite Platini to Euros may be thwarted by FIFA

PARIS — UEFA’s bid to invite its banned president Michel Platini to the European Championship might be thwarted by FIFA’s ethics panel insisting Wednesday that he cannot give the impression of still “acting as a football official.”

European soccer’s governing body had believed a clarification from FIFA ethics judge HansJoachim Eckert gave the green light to invite Platini to its tournament — which starts Friday — despite serving a four-year ban from soccer.

“The letter, signed by Mr. Eckert, says Mr. Platini can be invited in a personal capacity as long as he doesn’t perform any official function,” UEFA general secretary Theodore Theodoridis said at the Stade de France, which is hosting Friday’s Euro 2016 opener between host France and Romania in Group A. “This will be transmitted to our executive committee and then they will make a decision probably about an invitation for Michel Platini for the whole of the tournament. As for Friday I do not expect he will be there.”

But the adjudicatory chamber of the FIFA ethics committee reasserted the terms of the ban in response to the public interpretation by Theodoridis.

“Mr. Platini is currently banned from all football-related activities (sport, business and other),” Eckert’s chamber said in a statement to The Associated Press. “He is not able to perform any activity that could create the appearance that he is still acting as a football official.

Mr. Platini may, however, attend matches of the UEFA Euro 2016 in a personal capacity.”

Attending matches in the VIP areas, mixing with soccer and political leaders, could still give the impression that Platini is there in an official capacity while banned.

Platini’s communication team told the AP that the former France great does not currently plan to attend matches at the month-long tournament.

Platini was the chief organizer of the 1998 World Cup, the last major soccer tournament to be staged in France. Its success helped him gain the job at FIFA, which ultimately led to his sanction last year.

Platini was found guilty by Eckert in December of ethics violations for taking a payment of 2 million Swiss francs ($2 million) from FIFA in 2011. The money was uncontracted extra salary for working as Sepp Blatter’s presidential

Sharapova banned for two years by ITF

LONDON - The career of Russian former world number one Maria Sharapova was in tatters on Wednesday after she was given a two-year ban by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) following her positive test for the banned drug meldonium.

In a statement the ITF said the five-times grand slam champion’s ban would be backdated to Jan. 26 this year, meaning her results and prize money from the Australian Open, where she reached the quarter-finals, would be cancelled out.

Sharapova, 29, said she would appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), describing the punishment as “unfairly harsh”.

She said an independent tribunal in London on May 18-19 had found that she had not intentionally violated anti-doping rules.

A 33-page report of the tribunal’s findings said: “The ITF accepts that the player did not engage in conduct that she knew constituted an antidoping rule violation,” but it rejected her assertion that there was no “significant” fault on her part.

“She was the sole author of her own misfortune,” it said.

On its website, the ITF said the ban, which could have been as long as four years, had been backdated due to Sharapova’s “prompt admission” of taking the substance, and would end on midnight of Jan. 25, 2018.

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) later issued a short statement saying it would review the decision before deciding whether to use its independent right of appeal to CAS. LONDON - Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo has put his Monaco misery behind him and is hoping for another epic battle with Lewis Hamilton in Montreal this weekend.

Two weeks after taking a first Formula One pole position, only to lose out on victory for the second race running due to no fault of his own, the smiling Australian returns to the scene of his first grand prix victory in a feisty mood.

Triple world champion Hamilton, aiming for a fifth Canadian Grand Prix win after also taking his first career triumph at the Circuit Gilles Villenueve, and his Mercedes team mate Nico Rosberg will be favourites again.

But Ricciardo reckons he can be a contender, particularly at a track where the weather can act as a leveller. Temperatures are forecast to be cool with some rain.

“Now that I’ve sort of got over Monaco I just want to get back in the car and basically smash it and get amongst it,” Ricciardo said on social media.

“You’re going to see the same intensity that you saw in Monaco.

I plan on keeping that up and not letting anything else get in the way,” added the Australian, whose 18-year-old Dutch team mate Max Verstappen won in Barcelona.

Renault’s latest specification engine, which Red Bull use with Tag Heuer branding, has provided a good boost in horsepower to help close the gap.

Canada has been a rollercoaster for Ricciardo in the past, his breakthrough win in 2014 followed by 13th last year when Hamilton won from pole position. He was 15th in 2013.

Hamilton has the momentum from Monaco and is a renowned

master of Montreal while Rosberg, 24 points clear at the top, will want to hit back after two races without a podium.

Another win for either would take Mercedes level with Red Bull in the all-time lists, on 51 each, but the champions know the pressure is on.

“The main thing we took away (from Monaco) was the very real threat from Red Bull,” said team boss Toto Wolff. “It took a bold strategy, a big push from Lewis and an even bigger slice of luck with Daniel’s slow pitstop to get us that win.

“We have no breathing space in this championship.”

Ferrari hope to add to the pressure, after their early promise fell off. Monaco, with Kimi Raikkonen retiring and Sebastian Vettel fourth, was their worst result of the season. (rtr)

Israel suspends Palestinian entry permits after Tel Aviv attack

JERUSALEM - The Israeli military on Thursday revoked permits for 83,000 Palestinians to visit Israel and said it would send hundreds more troops to the occupied West Bank after a Palestinian shooting attack that killed four Israelis in Tel Aviv.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the assault by the two gunmen on Wednesday in a trendy shopping and dining market near Israel’s Defence Ministry, but Hamas and other Palestinian militant groups were quick to praise it.

The assailants came from near Hebron, in the Israeli-occupied West Bank. They dressed in suits and ties and posed as customers at a restaurant before pulling out automatic weapons and opening fire, sending diners fleeing in panic.

The dead included two women and two men, while six people were wounded. The attack followed a lull in recent weeks after what had been near-daily stabbings and shootings on Israeli streets. It was the deadliest incident in eight months.

The attackers, cousins in their 20s

who security experts said appeared to have entered Israel without permits, were quickly apprehended. One of them was shot and wounded.

“It is clear that they spent time planning and training and choosing their target,” Barak Ben-Zur, former head of research at Israel’s Shin Bet domestic security agency, told reporters.

“They got some support, although we don’t know for sure who their supporters are,” he said, adding that they appeared to have used improvised automatic weapons smuggled into Israel.

The attack, as families were enjoying a balmy evening out at the open-air Sarona complex, took place just a couple of hundred yards from the fortified Defence Ministry in the heart of Tel Aviv,

which has seen far less violence than Jerusalem.

After security consultations overseen by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the military said it was rescinding some 83,000 permits issued to Palestinians from the West Bank to visit relatives in Israel during the ongoing Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

It also announced that two battalions would be deployed in the West Bank by the end of the day to reinforce troops stationed in the area, where the military maintains a network of checkpoints and often carries out raids to arrest suspected militants. Israeli battalions are comprised of around 300 troops.

Such measures, including restrictions on access to Jerusalem’s Aqsa Mosque compound, the holy site in the heart of the Old City that Jews refer to as Temple Mount, have in the past lead to increased tension with the Palestinians. (rtr)

French finmin tells workers: No sense in strikes as growth picks up

PARIS - France’s Finance Minister, Michel Sapin, urged workers to end a wave of nationwide strikes, saying on Thursday the walkouts risked undermining signs of stronger growth and falling unemployment.

Rubbish piled up in parts of Paris as stoppages and pickets blocked waste treatment plants in one of a series of protests in different industries against plans to loosen labour market regulations, a reform the government hopes will help lower the jobless rate further from 10 percent.

Sapin said the latest data showing 159,000 jobs were created in the first three months of 2016, more than in any quarter since early 2008.

“Unemployment is falling.

This is not the moment to throw a spanner into the works with growth picking up,” Sapin told France Info radio.

On the eve of the month-long Euro 2016 soccer championship, the government was working overtime to thrash out a deal on working conditions with the SNCF state rail company and end a 9-day strike.

Workers, many of them from the hardline CGT union, briefly blockaded France’s largest wholesale food market south of Paris while Air France pilots planned a four-day stoppage starting on Saturday, the day after the soccer contest opens.

Despite signs that broader strike action against labour law reform spearheaded by the hardline CGT union was running out of steam, train services remained disrupted as millions of foreign visitors and soccer fans prepare for the month-long tournament that kicks off on Friday evening.

Asked about the consequences for growth, Sapin said: “Broadly speaking, the strikes are having no impact.”

He reiterated that the government would not cave in on its proposals to make hiring and firing easier and hand companies more power to negotiate pay and work conditions locally, which could weaken the influence of unions in the work place.

Search for Swiss climber reported missing on Mt Semeru continued

With debt payment looming, House weighs Puerto Rico bill WASHINGTON — House Republican leaders and President Barack Obama pressured lawmakers in both parties to back legislation to help ease Puerto Rico’s financial crisis as the U.S. territory faces a $2 billion debt payment in just over three weeks.

The House was scheduled to begin debate Thursday on a bill that would create a financial control board and restructure some of Puerto Rico’s $70 billion debt. Republican and Democratic leaders support it, as does the Obama administration, but it faces opposition from both sides, as well, as some bondholders, unions and island officials who have lobbied against the bill.

Speaker Paul Ryan will need significant support from his own caucus as well as most Democrats to get the bill passed. He has argued the legislation is the only way to avoid an eventual taxpayer bailout for the island.

Obama summoned House Democrats with ties to Puerto Rico to a meeting in the Oval Office Wednesday. One of those, Rep. Luis Gutierrez, is an outspoken opponent of the legislation, saying he doesn’t believe it will do enough for ordinary Puerto Ricans.

Puerto Rico’s representative in Congress, Pedro Pierluisi, is supporting the bill despite opposition from other lawmakers on the island.

“He made absolutely clear that there is no ‘Plan B’ here,” Pierluisi said of Obama.

Puerto Rico, which has struggled to overcome a lengthy recession, has missed several payments to creditors and faces the $2 billion installment on July 1. The economic crisis has forced businesses to close, driven up the employment rate and sparked an exodus of hundreds of thousands of people to the U.S. mainland. Schools lack electricity and some hospitals have said they can’t provide adequate drugs or care. The island’s only active air ambulance company announced Tuesday that it has suspended its services.

Ahead of the vote, Republicans said they had enough support from both parties for passage. Supporters were bolstered by a 29-10 vote in the House Natural Resources Committee on May 25.(ap)

Michigan Legislature OKs $617M bailout for Detroit schools

LANSING — The Michigan Legislature narrowly approved a $617 million bailout and restructuring of Detroit’s debt-ridden school district early Thursday, two years after the state spent less than a third of that amount to help the city government emerge from bankruptcy.

The legislation goes to Gov. Rick Snyder for his expected signature. The Republican-controlled Senate passed a main bill 19-18 late Wednesday, and the GOP-led House followed with a similar razor-thin 55-54 vote. Some Republicans joined all Democrats in opposition during an emotional debate that brought some lawmakers to tears.

Snyder, who had warned legislators that insolvency would be disastrous for students and the state if the district ran short of money this summer — as it would have without further intervention — said in a statement that the measure is a “fresh start” and an “unprecedented investment for the education of Detroit’s children.”

The financially and academically ailing 46,000-student Detroit Public Schools has been managed by the

state for seven years, during which it has continued to face plummeting enrollment, deficits and, more recently, teacher sick-out protests.

Under the bills, the district would be split in two and control would be returned to an elected school board. A commission of state appointees would oversee the district’s finances, similar to how it now reviews the city’s budgeting as part of a $195 million state rescue in 2014.

The new debt-free district would educate students. The old district would stay intact for tax-collection purposes to retire $617 million in debt over 8½ years, including $150 million in transition costs to launch the new Detroit Community Schools.

Furious Democrats accused “coward” Republicans of bowing to the politically influential school-choice

lobby in dropping a proposed commission of mayoral appointees to regulate the opening of new schools — including independent, publicly funded charters that have drawn students and funding away from traditional neighborhood schools.

Sen. Bert Johnson, a Highland Park Democrat who represents part of Detroit, said the legislation is “paternalistic” and “unethical.”

“If you do this, you are systematically spelling the end of the Detroit Public Schools system,” he said. “Parents are already concerned. ... I think it’s going to drive enrollment further into the ground.”

But majority Republicans said bankruptcy would have been the worst possible outcome.

“I know many will weigh in with opinions on how we could have done better, and (we) all hear criticism about this compromise. But at the end of the day, our responsibility is to solve the problem,” said Senate Majority Leader Arlan Meekhof, a West Olive Republican.(ap)

LUMAJANG - A group of search workers continued their effort to find missing Swiss climber named Lionel Du Creaux on Thursday by focusing their search on a 75-meter-deep ravine of Mount Semeru in Lumajang District, East Java. “Our search is now focused on a ravine called Blank 75 because many climbers go missing there on their way back from Mount Semerus peak,” Head of Lumajang Districts Disaster Mitigation Agency Hendro Wahyono said.

The search for the 26-year-old climber that his friend named Alice Guignard from French reported his missing to the authorities of Ranupani post on June 7 was conducted through Tawon Songo and Ranupani tracks, he said.

Alice Guignard herself was found alive by a climber named Heri Sumantri and his friends after hearing her scream on June 6. Alice was then helped go down to Ranupani post, the first of 10 along the Semeru track, he said.

Lionel and Alice attempted to climb the peak of the 3,676 meterhigh mountain, located at the border of Lumajang and Malang Districts in East Java Province, together but Alice decided not to continue her effort after knowing that she chose the wrong track, he said.

Instead, Lionel kept climbing. The two climbers were reported not to inform the authorities of Ranupani Post about their intention to climb to the peak of Mount Semeru.(ant)

Indonesia, Australia agree to increase cooperation in counter-terrorism

JAKARTA - Indonesia and Australia have agreed to step up cooperation in the fields of intelligence and counter-terrorism.

The agreement was reached at the 2nd Australia-Indonesia Ministerial Council on Law and Security meeting in Sydney on Wednesday.

The Indonesian delegation to the meeting was led by Coordinating Minister for Political, Security and Legal Affairs Luhut Pandjaitan along with other members, including National Police Chief General Badrodin Haiti, head of the National Anti-Terrorism Agency (BNN), Commissioner General Tito Karnavian, and Director General of Immigration of the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights, Ronny F Sompie.

“The meeting went very well

and we extensively discussed issues such as counter-terrorism, cooperation in the field of intelligence and capacity improvement in several fields. The meeting was very important for both the parties, considering the encouraging achievements made in the last one year,” Minister Luhut said in a press release issued after the meeting and received by ANTARA. The Australian delegation to the meeting was led by the countrys Attorney General, George Brandis, who was also accompanied

by Australias Minister of Justice Michael Keenan.

As in the first meeting last year, several security and legal is-

sues were talked about, including counter-terrorism, cyber security and intelligence operation.

“We exchanged information about threats in the region and commitment to strengthen intelligence cooperation between Indonesia and Australia so that the problem of terrorism could be overcome.

We also discussed issues of funding, de-radicalization and cyber crimes,” Brandis disclosed.

He reiterated that the two countries were keen to prevent acts of terror in their respective countries.

Citing an example of achieving success in overcoming terrorist threats, Minister Luhut referred to the mapping of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) in Southeast Asia, led by Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

“There are around 500 Indo-

nesians in Syria and they want to establish a caliphate in Southeast Asia. We have successfully mapped them. We have exchanged this information with Australia,” Luhut informed.

Australias Minister of Justice and also Special Minister for Terrorism Affairs, Michael Keenan, underlined that both the countries face threats from international terrorist organizations.

“We are facing terrorists from the Middle East who have clearly declared war against other countries and have attacked our friends and neighbors. This cooperation will help respond to such threats. This is our opportunity to learn about implementation of law and build intelligence cooperation and we will keep collaborating,” he stated.

On questions about flow of

funds for terror activities from Australia to Indonesia, Minister Luhut noted that the matter was still being investigated by the two countries.

“Our parliaments right now are in the process of revising the anti-terrorism law that will allow law enforcers to arrest a person or a group suspected of planning to conduct any act of terror. The old law prohibits it. We hope the revision process would be finished next month,” Luhut enunciated in reply to a reporters question. The two sides stated that the meeting yielded concrete results.

The first meeting took place in Indonesia last year. This is a forum to coordinate cooperation and define the two countries responsibilities regarding international security, especially terrorism.(ant)

President wants transportation infrastructure to be modernized

JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo has expressed his wish to usher a major change in the transportation infrastructure in Indonesia, especially in key cities, making it more modern and in line with the peoples wishes.

“We would like to alter everything, but the ground plan will have to integrate the existing means of transportation,” the president stated

in his opening speech at a closed door meeting about transport infrastructure in the Jabodetabek region, held in the presidential office in Jakarta on Wednesday.

He expressed the view that it was high time the transport infrastructure in Indonesia was developed in such a way that it fulfilled three main functions of connectivity, integration between different means

of transportation and modernization.

“The first function is connectivity between regions since better connected regions will ensure economically more efficient movement, besides lowering logistical and transportation costs, thus improving our competitiveness,” he explained.

Second focus will be to achieve

integration between different means of transportation, which President Widodo deems very important.

“If we can connect air traffic with railways, and then with MRT and LRT, along with buses and harbors, the transportation will run much smoother. Such a mode of planning must surely be introduced,” he noted.

The President thinks that it is

time for Indonesia to build modern airports, harbors, stations and terminals with enough capacity to cater to the peoples needs. His plans also include expanding existing terminals, docks and runways.

“This modernization drive is also about enhancing security and making public transport more convenient for passengers,” he concluded.(ant)

Claiming to be murderers at Dentiyis hamlet

Chief of Gianyar Police, Waluya GIANYAR - Claiming to be the murderers against Dewa Gede Artawan at Dentiyis hamlet, Batuan, some time ago, five members of the mass organization (Baladika—Ed) surrendered to the Sukawati Police on Tuesday night (Jun. 7). The officers of Gianyar Police are still further investigated the testimony of the five people. As initial testimony, they claimed to surrender because of being overshadowed by anxiety.

The five people surrendering consist of I Wayan Buda Artama, 24, I Gede Nyoman Suka Artha Yasa, 23, Kadek Juniantara, 22, I Made Edi Ariyanta, 30, and Made Putra Mardana, 32. They all surrendered on Tuesday night around 22:45 accompanied by their legal counsel, Situmorang. The conspiracy alleged to be the offenders surrendered with some evidences including two blades.

“Yes, the five surrendering people claimed to be the murderers at Dentiyis hamlet, accompanied by a lawyer,” said Chief of Gianyar Police, Waluya, Wednesday (Jun. 8).

After the surrender, police immediately examined the testimony of the conspiracy and adjusted to the evidences in the field. Chief of the district police affirmed that his ranks do not believe as such in the statement of the five people. To make sure, the criminal investigation unit of Gianyar Police also made coordination with forensic laboratory of Bali Police.

“We cannot believe it as such.

Thus, it should be adjusted to the testimony of witnesses, and crosschecked in the field including with the results of forensic laboratory related to their fingerprints and blood

However, based on the results of initial examination this action was triggered by spontaneous commotion. “These five people indeed belong to Baladika. But based on preliminary examination, they claim it was a spontaneous incident,” he said.

Chief Waluyo admitted to still make further investigation against the perpetrators about the possibility if such an action was planned, let alone the perpetrators were chasing the victim to pass through winding alley as far as hundreds of meters.

“We will check further about the motive if there is a revenge to plan or not, including if the victim had been followed from afar we are still investigating,” he explained.

Then, what is the reason for the five perpetrators to surrender?

Chief Waluya said that in the last examination the five people admitted to have been always overshadowed by the victim in their dreams.

“At first, the perpetrator dreamed of being overshadowed so that he eventually pleaded his friends to surrender,” he said.

When asked if the perpetrators are overshadowed with the fear of other mass organization, chief police admitted to still further investigate about that matter. “Whether the perpetrators are becoming the target, I do not know because I have no time to ask them. Obviously, they admitted to be overshadowed and feel frightened so that they finally surrendered,” he said. (kmb)

BANGKOK - The bespectacled image of King Bhumibol Adulyadej dominates public space in Thailand, from billboards on high-rises to portraits that flank leafy boulevards.

The Ujung Water Palace in Karangasem is one of the tourist attractions thronged by students and adult travelers.

After seven decades on the throne, King Bhumibol is seen by many Thais as a pillar of stability, and accorded semi-divine status.

But the kingdom marks his platinum jubilee on Thursday amid anxiety over his health and at a critical political juncture.

Celebrations will include a morning religious ceremony presided over by 770 Buddhist monks, a figure seen as auspicious.

The festivities will serve as a reminder to Thais of their relationship to a king who is regarded as integral to Thailand’s identity and a father-figure to the nation.

It may also jangle nerves about the succession, as most Thais have

known no other monarch. The king received heart treatment on Tuesday and has been in hospital for more than a year.

Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn, the king’s 63-year-old son, is the heir apparent. He has not achieved the same level of devotion that his father enjoys.

“The relationship between Thais and the king is deep, more than one can actually begin to explain,” Colonel Winthai Suvaree, a spokesman for the royalist junta, told Reuters.

“He is a father to the land.”

The monarchy has not always been held so highly in Thailand.

In 1946, at the age of 18, King

Bhumibol inherited a throne that had barely survived the upheaval of the end of absolute monarchy in 1932.

That marked what an official biography of the king described as a nadir for the monarchy.

Over the following decades, the king earned the adoration of millions through work in public health and rural development, and with the help of a formidable public relations machine that returned the monarchy to prominence in a country where politics, was, and still is, largely dominated by the military.

The military has staged 19 coups or attempted coups since the end of absolute monarchy, often evoking its loyalty to the crown and defence of the monarchy in explaining its actions. (rtr)

AMLAPURA - The Ujung Water Palace in Karangasem is one of the tourist attractions thronged by students and adult travelers. Ahead of the academic yearend holiday, the number of visit by local travelers mostly consisting of students jumped 100 percent. As a result, ticket attendants were overwhelmed.

It is revealed by Chief of Ujung Water Palace Management, Nyoman Matal, Wednesday (Jun. 8).

He said the surge of visitors in the past few days reached 100 percent. He added that daily average of the visit by students reached 3,000-3,500 people. Actually, on normal days the number of visitors both local and foreign travelers only reaches around 500 to 1,000 people. This former chairman of the Karangasem House of Representatives from Seraya village said that the students making a visit also organized a farewell party with the

six graders, ninth graders or twelfth graders under coordination of their teachers.

Matal hoped that in the next few days, visitors especially the group of students continue to come to the Ujung Water Palace. The students do not just make a leisure visit, but also do a study.

Aside from looking beautiful, this water palace also poses a historical heritage. This water palace was built by the last king of

Karangasem, namely AAAA Ketut Karangasem approximately in 1900. In the past, the water palace was destroyed mainly due to the earthquake and eruption of Mount Agung in 1963. However, ten years ago it was already reconstructed and preserved until these days. For the purpose of preservation, it has been arranged and the final arrangement was made to parking lot on the east of the river.

All this time, the holiday visits are dominated by students. Groups of students are dominated by those from outside Karangasem. They generally want a relatively convenient tourist attraction and not too crowded. Students or children making a visit to this attraction are only charged an admission ticket worth IDR 5,000 per person. (013)

Japan protests after Chinese warship sails near disputed East China Sea islands

TOKYO - Japan summoned the Chinese ambassador early on Thursday to express concern after a Chinese navy ship sailed close to what Japan considers its territorial waters in the East China Sea for the first time, increasing tensions over the disputed area.

Japan said a Chinese frigate sailed within 24 miles (38 kms) of the contested territory, the islands known as the Senkaku in Japan and the Diaoyu in China, shortly after midnight.

Japan’s Vice Foreign Minister Akitaka Saiki summoned the Chinese ambassador in Tokyo at around 2 a.m. (1700 GMT Wednesday) to “express a serious concern,” the government said in a statement.

Japanese and Chinese coastguard vessels frequently face off around the islands as both sides press their claims. Until now neither has dispatched warships to nearby waters, because doing so would inflame tensions and remove a buffer against potential armed conflict.

“We are worried that this action raises tensions to a higher level,” Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said at a regular press briefing in Tokyo.

“Related ministries are working together to deal with this and we will work closely with the U.S.,” Suga said.

China’s Defence Ministry said on Thursday it was looking into the reports that one of its navy ships sailed close to the disputed islands, adding its navy had every right to operate in Chinese waters.

“Chinese naval ships sailing through waters our country has jurisdiction over is reasonable and legal. No other country has the right to make thoughtless remarks about this,” it said in a statement sent to Reuters.

While the U.S. has not endorsed Tokyo’s territorial claim to the islands, which lie about 220 kms (135 miles) northeast of Taiwan, it has said the Japanese-controlled territory falls under its security treaty with Tokyo that obligates Washington to defend Japan against attack.

“We are aware of the reports and have been in touch with the Japanese government,” U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, Colin Willett told reporters by telephone from Washington.

“Until I have a little more detail, I can’t really comment on exactly what (Washington’s) reaction is,” she added.

The Chinese frigate stayed in the waters around the Senkaku/Diaoyu waters for about an hour before sailing toward the Chinese coast.

Countries can police their contiguous zone, adjacent to the disputed territory, for customs and immigration violations, but can’t prevent passage by other nations’ vessels. (rtr)

Late rock star David Bowie honored at NY fashion awards ceremony NEW YORK - Fashion designers paid tribute to David Bowie, the late British rock star and style icon who died of cancer earlier this year, at an awards ceremony recognizing people whose influence impacted the industry.

Actress Tilda Swinton accepted the Board of Director’s Tribute Award on behalf of Bowie’s widow, Iman, at the 2016 Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) Awards on Monday night at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York.

Michael C. Hall, one of the stars of “Lazarus,” the musical Bowie had worked before his death in January at the age of 69, also performed.

“David Bowie was an influence on everything. He was a culture event - his music, everything he was and we miss him,” designer Diane von Furstenberg said on the red carpet.

Bowie won fame for hits such as “Space Oddity” and plaudits for trend-setting pop personas like “Ziggy Stardust” and pushed the boundaries of rock, fashion, art and drama for decades.

Veteran designer Donna Karan received the Founder’s Award.

Price of imported fruits skyrockets

AMLAPURA - The prices of fruits have skyrocketed since two days before Buda Wage Kelawu falling on Wednesday (Jun. 8).

As observation until Tuesday (Jun. 7) at a number of traditional markets in Karangasem, the rising prices of imported fruits are precisely the highest.

At Karangsokong Market, Subagan, the price of red apple penetrated IDR 70,000 per kg while on normal days it only reached round tens of thousands of rupiahs.

Fuji apple surged to IDR 80,000 per kg from IDR 28,000.

Pondoh snakefruit is sold for IDR 16,000 per kg, while the snakefruit of Karangasem is around IDR 20,000 per kg, while sugar snakefruit reaches IDR

60,000. However, the stock of both local snakefruits is very limited because it is beyond the season.

Kintamani tangerine in the Karangasem market is sold for IDR 30,000 per kg and Malang apple for IDR 30,000 per kg, while the price of bananas for the purpose of filling in the offerings reaches IDR 10,000 per four pieces.

The surge in the price of fruits happened because many people held ritual on Wednesday. On the other hand, the production of local fruits is very limited because the season of fruits has passed. There are no mango and rambutan, but the Karangasem market is flooded by imported fruits. (013)

NEW YORK — In a surprise appearance, Beyonce strode onstage in sparkling pinstripes Monday evening to speak emotionally about both family and fashion at the annual Council of Fashion Designers of America awards ceremony.

“As long as I can remember, fashion has always been a part of my life,” the pop superstar, who was honored with the Fashion Icon award, told a glittery crowd of designers, TV stars and other celebrities. She went on to recount how her grandmother had been a seamstress, and then passed that skill on to Beyonce’s mother.

“When we were starting out in Destiny’s Child, high-end labels, they didn’t really want to dress four black, country curvy girls,” she said. “And we couldn’t afford designer dresses and couture. My mother ... used her talent and her creativity to give her children their dreams.” She spoke of wearing her first costumes, which her mother and uncle had designed and sewn, “putting so much passion and love into every detail.” It felt, she said, “like an extra suit of armor. It was so much deeper than any brand name.”

Norma Kamali, famous for her “sleeping bag” coats and her swimsuits — including the red one actress Farrah Fawcett wore in her famous poster — received the lifetime achievement award from presenter Michael Kors, and Donna Karan was handed the Founder’s Award from friend and designer Calvin Klein.

The three Swarovski awards for emerging designers went to Paul Andrew for accessories, to the Orley label for menswear, and to Brandon Maxwell for womenswear. Maxwell, Lady Gaga’s stylist, spoke movingly about growing up “very gay in a very small town” in Texas, where styling his female friends gave him a sense of purpose in life.

But the show’s finale was all about Beyonce, who along with her glittering pantsuit wore a large, black wide-brimmed hat.

She praised fashion designers for being, in her words, fairy godmothers, magicians, sculptors — “and sometimes even our therapists.” (ap)

The high waves began to happen around 13:00. Some houses located close to the embankment of Kelod hamlet, Jungut Batu, were damaged as swept away by the waves. A number of residents had a chance to capture the moment happening for the first time.

When confirmed to the headman of Jungut Batu, Made Suryawan, he justified the brunt of waves indeed occurred in the region. However, the

incident only took place for a few hours and then gradually returned to normal.

Such huge waves caused some points of revetment in the region of Jungut Batu to be more seriously damaged. Associated with the damaged dike, Made Suryawan asked for the government’s attention. He hoped the government can build revetment with a pedestrian in order to support the tourism in Nusa Penida.

“If possible, the pedestrian is made like the one on Sanur Beach, Denpasar,” he hoped while adding that tourist visit to Jungut Batu village is now increasingly crowded.

The Head of the Klungkung Public Works Agency, I Gusti Supartana, when contacted he justified there will be a project of coastal embankment development in 2016 at Jungut Batu village. The project will be worked on by the province with a budget worth IDR 2 billion. “This project is meant to create something new,” he added. High waves run into coastal areas of Jembrana

NEGARA - High waves engulfing the coastal areas of Jembrana since the past three days has an impact on some beaches in Jembrana.

Residents living in the coastal areas admitted the waves were the worst.

Aside from flooding road, the high tide also has an impact on abrasion and breaking off local roads.

From the information compiled on Wednesday (Jun. 8), the impact of seawater occurred almost along the coastal areas of Jembrana. At Perancak, a fisherman, I Ketut Narna, 51, virtually disappeared when his boat was hit by high waves

at sea. He could survive after being approached and helped by another fisherman, I Ketut Widana, 50. One meter-high wave crashed his boat to be destroyed. He had sunk and eventually rose to the ruins of his boat while waiting for another passing boat. He has been bobbing at sea about four hours until the boat of Widana passed and helped him. As a result of the accident, the victim suffered a loss worth millions of rupiahs.

Other than at Perancak, the impact of high waves also hit the coastal areas of Delod Berawah. Along this

coast, the high tide inundated the road. Thorny trees protecting the coast were swept away by the waves.

Seawater crept up onto the road and reached a number of buildings on the street side. Water flooded the road as high as 30 cm, so that the road could not be passed through. At that location there is a row of cafe buildings. According to a local resident, the high waves have occurred since three days before. “Usually this happens for three days and this afternoon will surely recede. But the waves are high,” said Putu Edi. At Pengambengan, high waves

broke off the road access at the fishing village of Ketapang hamlet. High waves have crashed onto mainland since the past two days. “Now, the road has broken off as totally eroded by the abrasion. Within the past two days the waves are big enough,” explained Aan, a local resident, Wednesday (Jun. 8).

As field observation, the road with the width of 2.5 meters only remained a few centimeters. The macadam asphalt layer looked to flake off due to the brunt of seawater.

By the people, that location has been installed a warning sign made of

wood and bamboo.

At least along 25 meters of the land disappeared due to the high waves. “Usually the waves begin to emerge before midday or around ten o’clock,” added Aan. Larger waves occur at night, especially in the full moon.

Although the condition has been severe, some residents mostly consisting of fishermen still choose to live in their house on the edge of the beach. “There is no other choice and every night the seawater crashes the wall of our house,” said Juhri, a surviving resident. (kmb26)

BLH Buleleng dredges siltation of Lake Buyan

SINGARAJA - The Buleleng Environment Agency (BLH) began to clean up water hyacinth and dredge the siltation of Lake Buyan, Pancasari. The cleanup is done by the BLH Buleleng by borrowing an amphibious excavator from the Bali-Penida River Agency (BWS). This heavy equipment has been in operation to clean up the water hyacinth and dredge siltation in the lake area since Saturday (Jun. 4).

Priority of the dredging and water hyacinth cleanup is focused on the east side near the wantilan hall of Ulun Danu to the sluice of embankment at the edge of the lake. This location is experiencing severe siltation to raise a mound. In addition, the east side of the lake area is also overgrown with water hyacinth and water lettuce. Due to this siltation, the water lake begins to shrink estimated to reach three meters.

The Head of the BLH Buleleng, Nyoman Surya Temaja, explained on Wednesday afternoon (Jun. 8) that the borrowing of heavy equipment like the amphibious excavator is believed to be able to cleanse the water hyacinth and water lettuce currently covering up the inundation of the lake and normalize the lake area. So far, there is no specific target of time for normalizing the second lake of Buleleng. However, the heavy equipment will continue to work until the dredging is deemed sufficient. “We’ll do the cleanup to be deemed sufficient, so that the lake area can return to its original condition,” he said.

On the other hand, Surya Temaja said that siltation of Lake Buyan is caused by mudflow occurred during rainy season in previous years. Such condition is aggravated by the area around the Lake Buyan having been

converted into agricultural land to cultivate vegetables. Mudflow from the agricultural area draining into the lake continues to accumulate. The worst condition occurs on the east side near the dike of sluice gates.

In the meantime, he admitted that the effort to clean up the water hyacinth and water lettuce by involving fishermen groups is considered less maximal. This occurs because the proliferation of water hyacinth and water lettuce is too fast and not comparable to the handling by using net manually.

“Siltation is quite apparent after the water recedes and overgrown with grass, so that the lake looks to narrow. With this heavy equipment, we are sure to be able to handle the problems occurred in this region,” he explained.

A local community leader of Pancasari village, Wayan Indrawan, said that the lake area spread across approximately 3.9 square kilometers. This area is estimated to have reduced due to severe siltation. To that end, he welcomed the effort of dredging the siltation and weeding.

“Indeed the siltation is severe and we support this dredging. Hopefully, it could run optimally, so that the lake can return to normal as ever before,” said this PDI-P politician nicknamed as Kejes. (kmb38)

LONDON - Dressed in Hogwarts robes and waving wands, eager fans got a first glimpse of the next instalment in the Harry Potter saga, giving a new London stage production glowing reviews.

“Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” brings back to life author J.K. Rowling’s magical world of wizards and witches, set 19 years after her last book about the muchloved character and his friends Ron and Hermione.

The play, the eighth story in the series, opened for previews on Tuesday night at London’s Palace Theatre, outside which queues snaked for metres as those who secured the first tickets waited anxiously to get in.

The play, split into two parts, follows the three friends into adulthood, with Potter now described as an overworked Ministry of Magic employee, coping with his youngest son Albus’ struggles with his famous family’s legacy.

Little else has been revealed and Rowling, whose books were turned into box office hit movies, has asked that audiences do not spoil the story for others.

“I really liked the films but after seeing this, I would say, forget the films,” fan Callum Fawcett said.

“This is fantastic ... It’s got everything.”

First strikes, then floods, now trash: Paris in ordure fight

PARIS — After a rough couple of months that have included protests, fuel shortages, rail strikes and once-in-a-generation floods, France’s capital is facing a new challenge: Piles of uncollected garbage.

A new wave of strikes is disrupting trash collection in Paris with only two days to go until the European Championship soccer tournament, a sporting event predicted to draw 2.5 million spectators.

in the French capital Wednesday and trash bag barricades set up in front of waste facilities. France’s CGT union said that four out of the six garages housing Paris’ garbage trucks — 300 vehicles in all — had been blocked as part of a more than week-long protest. The mayor’s

office said garbage collection had been hindered for “several days.”

The CGT said similar strike action is hindering trash collection in the French cities of Marseille, SaintEtienne and Aix-en-Provence.

French life has been disrupted for weeks by industrial action affecting trains and gas stations.

A huge flood hit the capital last week, briefly shutting museums and drowning the Seine River’s embankments.

The floods have drained away, but the protests have not. Many are aimed at securing the withdrawal of France’s labor reform law, which opponents see as eroding France’s social protections.

But other groups — including railway workers and Air France staff — are hoping to win concessions as the Euros get underway.

Speaking to lawmakers Wednesday about the railway strike, which the government had hoped to resolve ahead of the tournament,
