“The Voice” host Carson Daly says baby Milan has been a welcome addition to the kid-friendly set, which features regular visits from Daly’s young brood, Usher’s children and Levine’s nephews.

“With Milan it’s a full blown nursery!” explained Daly of Shakira’s baby-proofed double-wide trailer. “It’s just like Shakira’s door opens and ‘It’s a Small World’ starts playing. It’s built for Milan. And it’s really special and it’s cool. We’re like a little family.” But according to Shakira, it’s not the children who cause the most trouble.

“It’s like a kindergarten because these guys are already babies.

They’re babies!” she joked of her fellow coaches.

TAIPEI, Taiwan — Academy Award-winning director Ang Lee says that modesty and diligence have been the keys to his success in penetrating the foreign cultures that have framed the backgrounds for many of his most notable films.

Lee won his second best director Oscar for “Life of Pi” earlier this year.

He also won the best director award for “Brokeback Mountain” in 2005.

Speaking to reporters Thursday in his native Taiwan, Lee said “I have to read everything and watch everything” before directing films with distinctly non-Chinese themes, like “Sense and Sensibility,” which takes place in early 19th century England, or “Brokeback Mountain,” a gay love story set in late 20th century Wyoming.

His next project — a television series for FX entitled “Tyrant” — focuses on the contemporary Middle East.

Chairman of the Indonesian Conference and Convention Association (INCCA) Bali, I.B. Surakusuma, said the BPPD could include the potential of local fruits into the materials of promotional agenda because it was indeed directing tourists to spend holidays in Bali by introducing the tourism potential of Bali in general.

“Representatives of the associations or tourism players in charge in the BPPD must know about the potential of tourism in Bali. They shall include the potential of local fruits in the promotional materials,” said I.B. Surakusuma.

In the exposure of Bali tourism potential, he said, any information could be included such as regarding the potential of local fruits.

Travelers would like to know about the local fruits existing in Bali because the island had a wide variety of local fruits.

Among them, there were jackfruit, rambutan, lychee, snakefruit and so on.

“Travelers will see the exceptional potential of the agriculture in Bali. Besides, they will surely also like to taste the local fruits,” he said.

According to him, tourism players should pay attention to local fruits. When imported fruits were made prominent products, the local fruit products would get marginalized. However,

when the local fruit products made prominent, it would certainly need the help of the government and tourism stakeholders.

“Government assistance can be made in the form of appeal and control in order that the hotel management takes advantage of the local fruits,” he said.

He explained that all the tourism stakeholders should be involved in promoting the Bali tourism. Apart from the BPPD, the hotel management also had an obligation to introduce local fruit products. The BPPD and hoteliers should not only introduce and promote local fruits.

“Other local products such as vegetables and meats can also be utilized by tourism sector. Potential local fruits should be used to strengthen the appeal of the product and the Bali tourism,” he said.

The Dean of the Faculty of Tourism, Udayana University, Putu Anom, said that business people engaged in tourism sector, especially in the hospitality, were obliged to absorb the local agricultural products. Stakeholders in tourism through tourism associations such as the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) and the Indonesian Tourism Industry Association (GIPI) Bali including the performers of the agricultural sector through the agricultural as-

sociations like the Indonesian Farmers’ Union (HKTI) Bali could make a clear contract with the government.

“At least, there is a government policy requiring that the tourism sector should take advantage of the local agricultural products,” he said.

According to him, tourists spending holidays in Bali would also feel useless because they were served with imported products from their home country. This should become a concern of the entrepreneurs in the tourism sector why they did not present local fruits/local agricultural products according to their season. “Travelers spending holidays in Bali want to feel what does not exist in their own country. It is consistent with the concept of curiosity,” he said.

He argued the local agricultural products like fruit and vegetable, including meat had a great potential to get absorbed into the hospitality sector though the agricultural and livestock products in Bali had not yet been fully absorbed by the market of tourism/hospitality.

“It is required a support in the form of regulation on the restriction of imported fruits, vegetables, and meat.

Provincial government needs to create a rule obliging the employers to purchase the local agricultural products and reduce the use of imported products,” he said. (kmb27)

Flies attack

Chicken husbandry in Melaya protested Negara (Bali Post)-

With the many chicken husbandry at Banjar Pangkung Tanah Kauh, Melaya Village, Melaya caused an unwell house sanity as flies started to attack its surrounding houses expected due to the chicken’s waste odor that did not get cleaned by their owners.

“This is not comfortable at all, moreover it is chicken harvest season soon. Our dining table became black due to flies staying there,” a anonymous local stated.

Those most affected were food and drink sellers not far from the chicken cages. Owners of the diners have complained yet nothing has been done. Yet now the amount of flies flying through is much less than last week although the smell of the chicken wastes still is around.

Head of the Banjar, Komang Warsana, confirmed of the situation. According to him there are four cages petting more than 2,500 chickens and the husbandry is legal. Another house owned 2,500 chickens and doesn’t need documents. The Banjar officers have also warned and checked those husbandry so that is being cleaned and sprayed yet the spraying cause the fly to go away then flew to locals’ houses. (kmb26)

Mesuryak tradition draws visitors attensionCoinciding with Kuningan feast day on Saturday (Apr 6), the Bongan Puseh customary village, Bongan village, Tabanan, organized a mesuryak or cheering tradition. This ritual is spreading money as an escort for the ancestors returning to heaven. Unfortunately, though being vibrant, the tradition remained to draw minimal interests of tourists.

Of the 11 hamlets at Bongan village, the cheering tradition at Bongan Gede was the most festive. Such ritual tradition was commenced by saying prayers in family temple. Then, it was resumed with putting the offerings in front of the entrance gates of each house compound. Around 10:00 a.m., the ritual tradition commenced. After delivering the offerings, all the family members threw money up.

Money in various denominations of rupiahs became the seizure of all residents. It began from denomination of IDR 1,000 to IDR100, 000.

Once the money was thrown, local residents instantly scrambled to get it. Sometimes, people mutually pushed. The tradition of throwing money was made in turns. It was intended that residents could scramble to get money fairly.

Chief of Bongan Gede hamlet, Made Wardana, explained the mesuryak tradition posed the pinnacle of Galungan and Kuningan celebration at local village. The tradition was meant to deliver the ancestors after making a visit for 10 days during the celebration of Galungan. “We believe the ancestors are going back to their abode on Tumpek Kuningan. On that account, we escorted them while cheering and throwing money. This tradition is known as mesuryak,” he said.

Wardana added the tradition was the only one in Bali.

The action of throwing money had the meaning of prosperity.

Money symbolized the expression of gratitude to God. The amount of money spread depended on the ability of each family. Even, the-haves might spread as much as tens of millions of rupiahs. The tradition of escorting the ancestral souls was also known as ngulihang. “Obviously, our ancestors will be happy to see us cheering and having a lot of money,” he said. Wardana added that his party did not know exactly when such a tradition was commenced

Due to budget constraint, Puputan basement parking postponed Denpasar (Bali Post)—

The plan of Denpasar Municipality through the Spatial Planning and Settlement Agency (DTRP) to build a basement parking in the Puputan Badung Square seems unable to be realized this year.

It happens because the budget needed to build the underground parking and the museum is quite large, more than IDR 44 billion. Meanwhile, the budget owned by the Denpasar Municipality and assistance from the Bali government is inadequate. Therefore, the DTRP decided to postpone the implementation of basement parking construction.

The Head of Denpasar Spatial Planning and Settlement Agency, Gede Cipta Sudewa, confirmed on Tuesday (May 7) after making coordination with the provincial government that the plan was postponed. Such postponement, he said, was made because there had been no certainty regarding the additional budget or redesign for the project.

Based on the design created by the planning consultant, the arrangement of Puputan Badung I Gusti Made Agung Square would be carried out jointly and needed around IDR 44 billion. As much as IDR 27 billion of the total budget would be allocated for the museum construction funded by Bali govern-

ment. The remaining budget would be for the making of basement parking funded by Denpasar Municipality. Since the provincial government only gave IDR 5 billion, the project construction could not be implemented by Denpasar Municipality.

Cipta Sudewa added the plan to redesign the project was also uncertain.

He estimated the project could only be implemented in 2014. “Moreover, it is now entering the second quarter, for the time being it must be still pending,” he said.

The budget delivered by Bali government amounting to IDR 5 billion was still deposited in the BPD. His party

could not use the budget because it was not enough to build the foundation.

“The money remained to be deposited securely in the BPD,” he explained.

Based on the Detail Engineering Design (DED) of the parking lot, it would accommodate 400 vehicles. The parking space would be used to accommodate all the vehicles usually parked on the edge of the Puputan Badung Square, Jalan Surapati, Jalan Udayana, Denpasar Municipality as well as the number of road sections downtown. Construction of the basement parking under the Puputan Badung Square referred to the basement parking under the Karebosi Square in Makassar. (kmb12)

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

NEW YORK — Coca-Cola says it will make lower-calorie options and clear calorie labeling more widely available around the world, intensifying a push against critics who say its drinks pack on the pounds.

The Atlanta-based company, which makes Sprite, Fanta and Minute Maid, already offers diet drinks in most markets. But there’s no consistency in their availability, particularly in emerging markets such as China and India.

Coca-Cola also said Wednesday that it would support programs that encourage physical activity and no longer market to kids younger than 12.

The company had made a similar promise in 2007 but said the new push would create a “global standard” for the commitment.

It did not elaborate on what changes that would include or set a timetable on when it planned to meet its new goals.

With sugary drinks often blamed for making people fat, Coca-Cola Co. has been more aggressive in trying to convince customers its products can be part of a healthy lifestyle. Earlier this year, the company aired its first TV ad addressing the matter in the U.S. and has since been rolling out the spot to other countries.

The ad touts Coca-Cola’s wide range of lower-calorie offerings. But executives have also made a point of standing by the company’s fullcalorie drinks, saying that physical activity plays an important role in fighting obesity.

“There is a place for all of our beverages in a healthy lifestyle,” CEO Muhtar Kent said in a call with reporters.

The announcement from Coca-Cola comes as packaged food companies across the industry look for growth in emerging markets, where middleclass populations are growing rapidly. As more people head to cities and see their incomes rise, health advocates have warned that growing consumption of packaged foods in such countries could fuel obesity rates as they have in developed nations.

The shifting populations around the world nevertheless represent an enormous opportunity for companies. For example, Coca-Cola has noted that Americans on average drink 403 servings of its various beverages a year. That compares with just 12 servings per year in India and 38 in China.

And the company’s diet options aren’t nearly as popular in such countries as they are back at home. In the U.S., where soda consumption has been declining for years, diet drinks now account for 41 percent of sales for the flagship Coke brand. That’s up from single-digits in the 1980s.

Even in major Chinese cities, by contrast, the percentage of sales that diet options account for is in the “high single digits,” Kent said.

Coca-Cola Co. says its goal is to have diet options available wherever regular versions are sold. But that doesn’t mean there would be a diet alternative for every particular brand. NEW YORK — The Rockettes are best known for dancing at the Radio City Christmas Spectacular, but they did their signature kick line on a cruise ship Wednesday. The dancers are the godmothers for Norwegian Cruise Line’s new ship, Norwegian Breakaway, which was christened at a pier on the Hudson River.

The ship is themed on New York City, with a colorful mural on the exterior hull design by pop artist Peter Max featuring the city skyline and the Statue of Liberty.

Max attended the christening Wednesday with Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the Catholic archbishop for New York. He blessed the ship. Introducing the dozen high-stepping Rockettes in silver sequined costumes, the mayor said, “I don’t think anyone symbolizes our city’s energy, glamour and excitement more.”

Bloomberg also observed that with all the Big Apple touches onboard, “Breakaway passengers will never really leave New York behind.”

The ship offers ice sculptures of Lady Liberty, the Brooklyn Bridge and the Chrysler Building at an ice bar, and its shows include a version of the Broadway ‘80s rock musical, “Rock of Ages.” Passengers can take a fitness class designed by the Rockettes, and two Rockettes will sail on each of the first six trips beginning Sunday, and on the first sailing of each month thereafter.

A Sabrett hot dog stand, complete with yellow umbrella, serves guests near an area called Rockaway Beach.

Norwegian Cruise Line CEO Kevin Sheehan, a native New Yorker, proved his own street cred by showing off a copy of his decadesold license to drive a yellow taxi.

Sheehan said the ship “takes the best elements of New York City” and brings them to sea.

With a capacity of 4,000 passengers, the 18-deck vessel is the biggest cruise ship to homeport year-round in Manhattan. On Sunday, the Breakaway begins its summer itinerary of seven-day trips to Bermuda. The ship will sail to the Bahamas and Florida in the winter.

At a pre-christening party Tuesday night, Max said it was “unbelievable to have something so big with my art on it.”

Not everything onboard has a New York connection. The ship will have an outpost of “Cake Boss” star Buddy Vlastro’s Hoboken, N.J., bakery, Carlo’s Bake Shop. Vlastro emceed the christening festivities,

showing off a large cake that looks exactly like the ship.

The ship also has a water park with five water slides, including free-fall slides, plus a three-story sports complex with nine-hole mini-golf, a basketball court and rock-climbing wall.

Norwegian Breakaway will have three eateries by Geoffrey Zakarian, a Food Network Iron Chef who has served as a top chef and restaurant owner at a number of New York City venues.

Zakarian’s Norwegian Breakaway restaurants are seafoodthemed: Ocean Blue, The Raw Bar and Ocean Blue on the Waterfront.

The ship’s 27 dining options also include ethnic restaurants like a Brazilian churrascaria and Shanghai’s Noodle Bar, along with the Manhattan Room, styled like a private supper club with dance floor.

An open-air boardwalk called The Waterfront offers al fresco dining and shopping venues with seaside views. The Waterfront is connected to a three-deck dining, entertainment and gaming area called 678 Ocean Place.

DENPASAR — Intention of the Indonesia Market Traders Association (APPSI) Bali to establish a wholesale market accommodating local agricultural products such as vegetables and fruits has never been realized. It occurs because the APPSI has difficulty to get the land.

“We have long planned to establish a wholesale market to market all the local agricultural products both vegetables and fruits coming from the mountain area in Denpasar. Unfortunately, to date we have not got the land,” said Chairman of the APPSI Bali, Ida Bagus Raka Wiryanata, when contacted by Bali Post.

He further said the procurement of wholesale market selling the local fruits and vegetables was one of the attempts to improve the fate of farmers. Aside from providing benefits for farmers through certain price, it was also capable of paying attention to the welfare of farmers.

“All this time, most of the farmers sell their products to middlemen, so that the price on offer was in speculative nature,” he said.

Establishment of a wholesale market for the agricultural products, he admitted, was one f the forms to drive the economy of Balinese people that should be undertaken by the government. To date, the constraint always complained about by Balinese farmers in particular was the unavailability of sufficient market. On that account, when harvest season fell, the agricultural prices declined quite dramatically or the products decayed due to lack of market.

“At least, through the wholesale market we expect to give an advantage of 10-15 percent of the cost of production, so that farmers will constantly be motivated to yield products by persistently paying attention to the quality of products,” he said.

Ida Bagus Raka explained that a wholesale market was different from traditional market and modern market. Its presence was dedicated to create a standardization of price, production, and quality management of the agricultural products. Currently, the agricultural products were not well coordinated, both in terms of price, quality and production desired by the market and the quantity produced by farmers, so that it frequently kindled an overproduction of the commodity that finally led to price decline. “Basically, in the future the farmers are unnecessary to worry and think about where to market their products. Besides, the traditional and modern markets will be easier to get the agricultural products. In short, all the parties will benefit from this wholesale market,” he said. (kmb28)

He said the governor and local leader should have a vision on the agricultural sector, as well as consistently direct, encourage and facilitate, so that it was not only to build political image.

“Moreover, I’ve heard the development fund is even deposited in the bank. The fund should not be deposited in the bank, but will be better to be used for the agricultural development.

Make synergy between the agriculture and tourism,” he said.

When talking about the agriculture, according to him, the paradigm of agribusiness, land factor, irrigation, institution, technology and human resources should be holistically developed. “If necessary, make a research and development as well as set the promotional envoy of the agriculture in Bali, so that the governor does not need to make site inspection to the field, but implement the action plan immediately,” he said.

Meanwhile, according to Chairman of the Subak Research Center (PPS) of the Udayana University, Prof. I Wayan Windia, about 45 percent of Bali’s population still depended on the agriculture. Ironically, contribution of the sector to the gross regional domestic product (RGDP) remained low at only 19 percent. “Growth in the agricultural sector is relatively small, namely 2.1 percent. The growth is small, while those working in the agricultural sector are very large so that the productivity in the agricultural sector stays low,” he said.

Such condition was aggravated by the very little investment in the agricultural sector, namely less than one percent. The professor of the Faculty of Agriculture, Udayana University, also clearly explained the value added in the agriculture was the lowest, namely 2.5 million, when compared to the industrial and tourism sector. Even, the land tax (PBB) was very suffocating and burdensome for farmers that never had money in cash because their income had run out for

consumption. Meanwhile, the land tax (PBB) increased every two years (adjusted to inflation), and the basic reference of land tax collection was location of the land, rather than the production of land.

“On that account, the price of input is very expensive, while the price of output is generally low at the harvest time,” he explained.

He recognized the income of farmers was averagely IDR 2.5 million per month for the cultivation of one-hectare wetland. On average, farmers only cultivated 0.30 hectare of land. “Sometimes, farmers are still difficult to get water because the irrigation water is contested by the Municipality Waterworks (PDAM) and tourism sector as well as has got polluted. These causes make farmers very reluctant to farm. Ironically, they feel more comfortable when selling their farmland. As evidence, within the past 5 years, the rice field in Bali reduced averagely more than 1,000 hectares per year,” he explained.

In the future, he hoped the existence of subak irrigation systems should be guaranteed. Subak organizations in Bali should be provided with the assistance, so that each subak can develop their economic activity and get education to run a business/trade as well as develop the technology in downstream or upstream area. Remaining mosquito repellent, room burnt Tabanan (Bali Post)-

A warning has been stated for those using burning required mosquito repellent. Wayan Agus Hendra Setiawab (23) from Banjar Kesiut Kawan Klod, Kesiut, Kerambitan had his room totally burnt last Tuesday (7/5) because of a remaining mosquito repellent still burnt. The fire was known by victim’s grandmother around 9 am local time.

The house was empty at the time as all were working including victim working in the State Electricity Company.

Luckily there were no casualties. “I did forget to turn off the remaining of the repellent. I do use it every night,” Agus explained.

As fire got bigger, locals helped out turning off the fire with limited equipments including using pipes.

Tabanan Fire Brigade did arrive and managed to turn off the fire yet all items within the house have gone away including the bed, television and a small shelf. Ceilings and windows were also collapsed. It is still unknown the total of loss experienced. “I’m okay if no items were saved as long as those in the house were safe,” Agus stated.

Head of Tabanan Fire Brigade, Suardi, stated to turn off the fire it did not take longs as locals have also tried to turn it off. Even so, the Fire Brigade had to make sure the fire is totally turned off and evacuated a number of items that can be saved. A lot of locals take a look at the area for themselves to answer their curiosity of the incident. (kmb30)

Japan pulls back on denials of WWII sex slavery

Putin made his short speech at the culmination of Victory Day, marking the defeat of Nazi Germany 68 years ago. It is Russia’s most important secular holiday, honoring the huge military and civilian losses of World War II and showing off the country’s modern arsenal.

Putin told 11,000 servicemen standing in tight formation on the square and the war veterans in the spectator stands that “we remember what the tragedy of war means

and will do everything so that nobody will ever dare to unleash it anew, threaten our children, our homes and our land.”

He added, “We will do everything to strengthen security on the planet.” The Soviet Union lost an estimated 26 million people in the war, of whom 8.5 million were soldiers. Among the thousands of spectators along the square were elderly World War II veterans, displaying rows of medals.

Putin lauded them, saying “We

will always remember that it was Russia, the Soviet Union, that ruined the misanthropic, bloody, arrogant plans of the fascists.”

The precisely choreographed parade included servicemen marching through the 5.5-acre (2.3-hectare) square and a convoy of more than 100 military vehicles ranging from armored cars to mobile missile-launchers and tanks. In the concluding display, more than 60 military aircraft flew over the square in close formation.

Tens of thousands of students in Chile have resumed their protests for free education with marches in major cities. The march in the capital, Santiago, was largely peaceful, but there were isolated clashes, authorities say.

Riot police said that they had been attacked with petrol bombs.

Police used water cannons and tear gas to break up one group of protesters. Chilean students have been staging protests for free, high-quality education since 2011.

Wednesday’s action was the sec-

ond nationwide protest this year.

The police estimated the number of protesters in Santiago at more than 37,000 but organisers say 80,000 people took to the streets.

There also were protests in other Chilean cities, including Valparaiso, Concepcion, Temuco and Valdivia.

On the first national marches of 2013, in early April, more than 100,000 participated. Although Chile’s education system is regarded by many as one of the best in Latin America, students argue

it is deeply unfair.

They say middle-class students have access to some of the best schooling in the region, while the poor have to be content with under-funded state schools.

There are no free universities.

TOKYO — Japan has acknowledged that it conducted only a limited investigation before claiming there was no official evidence that its imperial troops coerced Asian women into sexual slavery before and during World War II. A parliamentary statement signed Tuesday by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe acknowledged the government had a set of documents produced by a postwar international military tribunal containing testimony by Japanese soldiers about abducting Chinese women as military sex slaves.

That evidence apparently was not included in Japan’s only investigation of the issue, in 1991-1993.

Tuesday’s parliamentary statement also said documents showing forcible sex slavery may still exist. The statement did not say whether the government plans to consider the documents as evidence showing that troops had coerced women into sexual slavery.

Over the past two days, top officials of Abe’s conservative government have appeared to soften their stance on Japan’s past apologies to neighboring countries for wartime atrocities committed by the Imperial Army, saying Japan does not plan to revise them.

The backtracking appears intended to allay criticisms of Abe’s earlier vows to revise the apologies, including an acknowledgment of sexual slavery during the war, and calm tensions with neighbors South Korea and China. The U.S. government also has raised concerns about Abe’s nationalist agenda.

Abe has acknowledged so-called “comfort women” existed but denied they were coerced into prostitution, citing a lack of official evidence. He also has repeatedly vowed to reassess apologies by past Japanese administrations.

The parliamentary statement, released Tuesday and seen by the Associated Press on Wednesday, was in response to an official inquiry last month to the upper house of Parliament by opposition lawmaker Tomoko Kami, who said the government’s investigation into sex slavery was “insufficient” and documents it claimed to have collected were incomplete.

Kami, of the Japan Communist Party, also asked whether the government had ever updated its archives to reflect more recent findings than the earlier investigation. The answer was no.

The statement acknowledged documents produced by the 1946-1948 International Military Tribunal for the Far East, held in Tokyo, but said they were not in the Cabinet Secretariat’s archives. It did not say when the documents were found or whether they are reflected in any official statements about sexual slavery.

Abe also has criticized the tribunal’s decisions as “condemnation by the allied victors’ judgment,” but has said he’s in no position to object to the rulings Japan had already accepted.

The parliamentary statement described the 1993 findings as “the result of an all-out and sincere investigation” that brought “closure.” But it said the government is open to updates if new findings are valid.

GENEVA — Brazilian Ambassador Robert Azevedo said Wednesday that his first priority as the new leader of the World Trade Organization will be to try to rescue its credibility as a forum for trade negotiations.

Azevedo, in his first appearance as the presumed next WTO director general, said the organization’s prestige is on the line because it is used more to settle trade disputes and monitor policy than as a host for serious trade negotiations.

“We are at a critical stage.

The negotiating pillar of the WTO is completely stuck.

There is a clear paralysis in the system,” he told a packed room of journalists at Brazil’s WTO mission. “We have a trade agenda that we have to broaden and tackle.”

Back at the WTO, diplomats and officials offered their congratulations to Azevedo who won consensus support from the organization’s 159 members, most of them nations, to serve at the helm of WTO for the next four years. In a state-

ment, the WTO said Azevedo was selected because of the breadth and consistency of his support among members measured in terms of geographical representation and the spectrum of rich-to-developing nations.

He prevailed over Mexican former trade minister Herminio Blanco in the final round, from an initial field of nine candidates that also included contenders from Ghana, Costa Rica, Indonesia, New Zealand, Kenya, Jordan and South Korea.

His selection is to be made final later this month, after which he will become the first Latin American to head the Genevabased trade organization since its creation in 1995.

Though it can serve as a forum for governments to negotiate trade agreements, the WTO is most often the place where

they settle trade disputes according to international trade rules. Increasingly, nations have resorted to negotiating outside the WTO along regional and bilateral lines.

But Azevedo, who has been posted at the WTO for the past five years, drew on his insider status and reputation for brokering deals among parties to make the case that he could best reform the institution.

“One skill we certainly admire is an ability for building consensus,” said U.S. Ambassador to the WTO Michael Punke. “And we certainly think that will be a very key skill that he will need in this job, and we wish him all the best.”

Azevedo is to take over the organization on Sept. 1 from Pascal Lamy of France, who has been the director general for eight years.

WELLINGTON - During 26 years at the helm of Chinese tech giant Huawei, founder Ren Zhengfei has never once agreed to be interviewed by a journalist.

Until Thursday.

During a visit to the company’s New Zealand operations, Ren sat down with four local journalists at a Wellington hotel. The rules were strict: no international media, no photos.

But the meaning was clear. Huawei is taking steps toward trying to dispel its image as a secretive and opaque company, and to reassure the world of its good intentions.

The telecommunications equipment company has suffered business setbacks in the U.S. and Australia due to fears it could be a security risk. Last October, a U.S. congressional panel recommended telephone companies avoid doing business with it. Huawei issued a pledge not to cooperate with spying, and argues the U.S. is engaging in trade protectionism.

Huawei has grown rapidly in developing countries and is increasing its sales in Europe. Last year, it reported a $2.4 billion profit on sales of $35 billion.

Ren, 68, a former Chinese military engineer, declined through spokesman Scott Sykes to be interviewed by The Associated Press. Sykes said Ren felt more comfortable with a small group of journalists and chose New Zealand to break his silence because he has strong, positive feelings about the country “in his heart.”

through an interpreter, told reporters his company’s relationship with the Chinese government was no different from that between companies from other countries and their governments, according to a report by Fairfax Media.

Ren said he was confident no member of Huawei’s staff would engage in spying, even if asked to by Chinese security agencies. He said he’d joined the Communist Party in 1978 when it was expected all “exceptional” people would do so.

“At that time my personal belief was to work hard, dedicate myself or even sacrifice myself for the benefit of the people,” he said, according to Fairfax Media. “Joining the Communist Party was in line with that aspiration.”

Sykes said the company is trying to tell its story and dispel misinformation. He said that’s particularly important as Huawei moves from doing business only with other phone companies toward selling products such as smartphones directly to consumers.

New Zealand was the first developed country to sign a free trade agreement with China in 2008 and has developed close economic ties since then.

Huawei employs about 120 people in New Zealand. Last year it won a contract to work on the country’s broadband infrastructure — something it was denied in neighboring Australia — and this year it won a contract to help build a mobile network.

Ren owns 1.4 percent of Huawei.

Forbes magazine last year estimated his wealth at $475 million.

German drug smuggler sentenced to 5 years in Indonesia DENPASAR - An Indonesian court sentenced a German man Wednesday to five years in prison for attempting to smuggle hashish onto the resort island of Bali.

Martin Robert Moller, 41, was detained in December by customs officials with 232 grams (8.2 ounces) of hashish in two capsules as he arrived at the island’s international airport from Bangkok on a Thai Airways flight.

Judge Sugeng Riyono said the sentence was in line with the country’s current programme to fight drugs.

“This sentence will prevent him from committing such an act again, and serves as a warning to others thinking of smuggling drugs into Bali,” Riyono told the Denpasar District Court.

Moller’s lawyer Gusti Putu Maya Arsanti said his client “admitted his mistake and has shown regret”.

Indonesia has stiff penalties for drug trafficking, including life imprisonment and death.

On May 1, German national Rolf Oskar Josef Schweikert, 57, was handed a life sentence for trying to smuggle 3.7 kilogrammes of hashish into the island of Lombok.

And British grandmother Lindsay Sandiford was sentenced to death in January after cocaine with a street value of $2.4 million was found in her suitcase as she arrived on Bali.

In March, Indonesian resumed executions after a hiatus of several years when a Malawian drug smuggler was put to death.

SRINAGAR, India - A convicted Pakistani militant jailed in India died on Thursday in hospital after being beaten by another inmate in an apparent revenge attack for the death of an Indian spy prisoner, threatening already fraught relations between the two nations.

The death of Sanaullah Haq, also known as Sanaullah Ranjay, came a week after an Indian farmer convicted of spying died in Pakistan, leading to furious protests in India and criticism of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s government for going soft on its western neighbor.

“Although it’s scant consolation I’d like to offer a sincere apology to the family of Sanaullah Haq & my sympathies for their loss,” Omar Abdullah, the chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir state where Haq was imprisoned, wrote on Twitter on Thursday.

Pakistan, which is due to hold an election on Saturday, demanded an investigation into Haq’s death and said the attack was “a matter of deep concern.”

Indian interior minister Sushil Kumar Shinde said Haq’s body will be returned to Pakistan.

Haq, 64, had been in and out

of Indian jails since 1989 for spying and “subversive activities,” a senior police officer said. He was badly beaten last week in the prison gardens by a jailed Indian soldier, the prison superintendent said at the time, in an apparent revenge attack for the similar, fatal beating of Sarabjit Singh, the convicted Indian spy who died in Pakistan. Singh’s family says he was innocent.

Singh was given a formal funeral, including a 21 gun salute, by the government of the state of Punjab in his home town close the border with Pakistan.

BITTER TIES India and Pakistan have fought three wars since the partition of British-ruled India in 1947. They began a peace process in 2004 and have gradually improved trade ties, but remain deeply suspicious of each other. Relations

have been strained by several incidents this year.

The Pakistani government issued a travel advisory to its citizens on Tuesday, asking them to “exercise due caution and care” in India. It said the safety and security of Pakistani visitors in India, particularly those at an annual pilgrimage, could be in jeopardy.

In January, two Pakistani and two Indian soldiers were killed in an outbreak of violence in the disputed territory of Kashmir. It was the worst clash there since India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire nearly a decade ago, leading to angry reactions from both sides.

The Indian army launched a “massive” operation this week along the de facto border with Pakistan known as the Line of Control, after a group of militants were spotted in North Kashmir, said Brijesh Panday, an colonel of the Indian Army.

LAGOS, Nigeria — An ethnic militia killed at least 20 police officers who launched a raid to try and arrest them in central Nigeria, a police commissioner said Wednesday.

The attack in Alakio, a village in Nasarawa state, saw the officers ambushed Tuesday when they tried to stop the gang that was forcing locals to take a blood oath, police commissioner Abayomi Akermale said. Nigeria, a nation of more than 160 million people, has some 250 ethnicities. Such ethnic militias can be major presences in communities, exacting taxes and controlling areas in some places.

Akermale said the death toll in the attack could be higher, as emergency officials and police officers only reached the area on Wednesday. The commissioner declined to offer any other specific details about the attack, other than to say those responsible were not Islamic extremists.

The violence, which occurred in a state bordering Nigeria’s central capital of Abuja, comes amid growing insecurity in the oil-rich nation. Islamic extremists, including those belonging to the radical network known as Boko Haram, have been launching increasingly bloody guerrilla attacks throughout the country’s predominantly Muslim north.

Ethnic militias, as well as criminal gangs known in Nigeria as “cults,” kill at will and kidnap others for ransom. Some gangs use traditional beliefs to instill loyalty from their followers, as well as strike fear into the local population. Bangladesh factory fire kills eight; collapse toll tops 900 Reuters

DHAKA - Eight people were killed when a fire swept through a clothing factory in Bangladesh, police and an industry association official said on Thursday, as the death toll from the collapse of another factory building two weeks ago climbed above 900.

The fire, in an industrial district of Dhaka, comes amid global attention on safety standards in Bangladesh’s booming garment industry following the catastrophic collapse of Rana Plaza, on the outskirts of the city, in the world’s deadliest industrial accident since the Bhopal disaster in India in 1984.

“It is not clear to us how the accident happened, but we are trying to find out the cause,” Mohammad Atiqul Islam, president of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), told Reuters.

On Wednesday the Bangladesh government said it had shut down 18 garment factories for safety reasons following the April 24 collapse of Rana Plaza, which housed five garment factories making clothes for Western brands. Six were cleared to re-open on Thursday after inspectors issued safety certificates.

Salvage teams were still pulling bodies from the rubble of the Rana Plaza complex in Savar, around 20 miles northwest of Dhaka, and on Thursday a spokesman at the army control room coordinating the operation said the number of people confirmed to have been killed had reached 912.

Roughly 2,500 people were rescued from the building, including many injured, but there is no official estimate of the numbers still missing.

The government has blamed the owners and builders of the eightstorey complex for using shoddy building materials, including substandard rods, bricks and cement, and not obtaining the necessary clearances.

INDONESIA Anti-terror squad kills 7 militants Associated Press

JAKARTA — Indonesia’s elite anti-terrorism unit conducted several often bloody operations to root out suspected Islamic militants, killing seven and arresting 13 others, police said Thursday as they continued to investigate an alleged plot to bomb the Myanmar Embassy.

Investigators said the suspected militants robbed banks and committed other thefts to fund terrorism. Police were trying to determine whether any of the groups raided Wednesday and Thursday were connected to last week’s alleged plot to retaliate against Myanmar for recent attacks on Muslims in that country.

Police shot and killed three suspected militants early Thursday after an all-night standoff at a house in the Central Java town of Kebumen. Four others were arrested, said National Police spokesman Brig. Gen. Boy Rafli Amar.

Amar said at a news conference that the militants had planned to carry out a robbery. He said those were killed had refused to surrender and fired guns and lobbed homemade bombs at security forces.

The day before in the West Java village of Cigondewah, three suspected terrorists were fatally shot after holing up for hours inside a house, said National Police chief Gen. Timur Pradopo. He said the suspects also engaged in a shootout and hurled bombs. One suspect was taken into custody, and Amar said another had been arrested a day earlier.

No officers were hurt in either incident.

Police said they had acted on information they obtained through interrogating an alleged gun maker arrested Tuesday in the West Java village of Cipacing. Intelligence gathered from subsequent arrests allowed authorities to quickly move in and storm hideouts in the separate areas, Amar said.

A suspected militant was killed, and another arrested, in Central Java’s Batang town on Wednesday. Amar said in a text message that they were suspected in a March jewelry shop robbery in Jakarta. A second suspect was also arrested in Kendal, Central Java.

Also on Wednesday, the antiterror squad arrested five suspects in Jakarta, Indonesia’s capital, and in neighboring Banten province.

Authorities involved in the various operations also seized firearms, ammunition and explosives.

tured and seven killed Wednesday and Thursday were linked to groups in Poso, a flashpoint of terrorism in Central Sulawesi where a MuslimChristian conflict killed at least 1,000 people from 1998 to 2002.

They were also allegedly involved in thefts to fund their terrorist activities, including three bank robberies, Amar said. He also alleged that they had planned to set the Glodok market, Jakarta’s largest, on fire, though he provided no details.

It was not immediately known if the suspected militants were connected to last week’s alleged plot against the Myanmar Embassy. Sectarian violence in that Buddhist-majority country has killed scores of people, and tens of thousands of Muslims have been driven from their homes.

Last week, two suspects were arrested in Jakarta with five homemade bombs in a backpack. Other explosive materials were recovered inside a house they rented in the city.

lous Muslim nation, has been battling terrorists since bombings on the resort island of Bali in 2002 killed 202 people, mostly foreign tourists.

Clusters of arrests involving suspected terrorists at various sites are common once the terrorism force, known as Densus 88, receives information. Formed after the Bali attacks, it has received American and Australian financial and technical assistance and has been instrumental in the arrests of hundreds of militants over the past decade. It is credited with reducing the threat of further attacks on Western interests in the country, but the squad had been criticized for the high number of deaths resulting from its raids. More than 70 suspects have been killed since the unit was established.

Terrorist attacks aimed at foreigners in Indonesia have been largely replaced in recent years by smaller, less deadly strikes targeting the government, mainly police and antiterrorism forces.

Germany agreed to export over 100 tanks to Indonesia Associated Press

BERLIN — The German government has approved plans to export 104 main battle tanks to Indonesia along with dozens of other armored vehicles — drawing criticism from the opposition in Berlin.

The government confirmed the authorization in its reply to a question from opposition Green party lawmaker Katja Keul, who released the letter Wednesday. The Economy Ministry said the authorization also allows for the delivery of 50 infantry fighting vehicles, along with 10 support vehicles and ammunition.

Germany has taken an increasing role in global security over recent years but remains generally reluctant to commit its own troops.

Chancellor Angela Merkel, who visited Indonesia last year, has argued that it makes sense to “help trustworthy partners” ensure security in their own regions, sometimes by delivering military equipment.

The opposition has argued that her government is too ready to export weapons to sensitive areas and complained that the process of approving weapons exports, with decisions taken in secret by a small group of ministers and made public only months later, isn’t sufficiently transparent.

Last month, a German company said it had signed a deal with Qatar to supply the Gulf emirate with 62 new tanks and 24 self-propelled howitzers.

Gernot Erler, a senior lawmaker with the opposition Social Democrats and a former deputy foreign minister, said that human rights have been violated repeatedly in Indonesia so it could not be certain the tanks are being bought “just for the purpose of defending the country.”

But Merkel’s spokesman, Steffen Seibert, pointed to Indonesia’s transition to democracy over the past 15 years and quoted Merkel as saying that the country has “an exemplary function as far as people of different religions living together is concerned.”

“Kalaibin went to a police office to surrender and was accompanied by several local religious leaders,” said Deputy Chief of the Papua Provincial Police Brigadier General Paulus Waterpau here on Wednesday.

Several armed members of Kalaibin’s gang had attacked a joint security team in Aimas village, where it had been reported that separatist OPM’s star flag had been hoisted.

When entering the village, the security officers and Kalaibin’s armed members were involved in a clash that killed three members of Kalaibin.

“Kalaibin is now being detained in Aimas Resort Police Office of Sorong District, and being interrogated intensively,” Waterpauw said.

The join security team consisting of the Indonesia Military (TNI) and Police officers were attacked by the armed group when they entered Aimas.

Armed men attacked the officers, damaged their vehicles and injured a military officer’s head.

The security officers responded by shooting at them. Two separatists were killed and several others were injured in the incident.

An injured separatist identified as Salomina Kalaibin was later dead in Sele Be Solo Regional Public Hospital in Aimas village. Salomina Kalaibin was a member of Isak Kalaibin’s group.

End of an era as Ferguson decides to retire Reuters

LONDON - Alex Ferguson, Britain’s longest-serving and most decorated soccer manager, will retire at the end of the season after more than 26 years and nearly 1,500 matches at the helm of Manchester United, he announced on Wednesday. The 71-year-old Scot ended intense speculation that he was about to call time on his career by confirming he would step aside after champions United’s last game of the season at West Bromwich Albion on May 19.

His decision ends a glittering era at Old Trafford in which the club won 13 English league titles, two European Cups, five FA Cups and four League Cups as well as the FIFA Club World Cup. Former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho and Everton’s long-serving boss David Moyes, a Scot like Ferguson, are the bookmakers’ favourites to take over.

Ferguson arrived in Manchester in 1986 after Ron Atkinson was sacked and, after a difficult start, began building an empire that shows no sign of crumbling with the club recapturing the English title from Manchester City this season.

“The decision to retire is one that I have thought a great deal about and one that I have not taken lightly. It is the right time,” Ferguson, who has been in charge of 1,498 matches for the club, winning nearly 900 of them, said on United’s website (www. manutd.com).

United said Ferguson, who is to undergo hip surgery during the offseason, would remain at the club as a director. “It was important to me to leave an organisation in the strongest possible shape and I believe I have done so,” added Glasgow-born Ferguson who had announced he would retire after the 2001-02 season before changing his mind.

“Going forward, I am delighted to take on the roles of both director and ambassador for the club,” he said.

“With these activities, along with my many other interests, I am looking forward to the future.”

PARIS - Former England captain David Beckham hailed Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson as a “father figure” after the Scot announced his retirement on Wednesday.

The 38-year-old Beckham joined Manchester United’s academy and spent 17 years at the club, playing 394 games with the first team and winning six Premier League titles and the 1999 Champions League under Ferguson.

MADRID — Real Madrid has done its best to delay the inevitable, but Barcelona has another chance to finally clinch the Spanish league title this weekend.

A win by Barcelona at Atletico Madrid on Sunday will seal the Catalan club’s 22nd league title and fourth in five years - although the team may already be champions by then if Madrid drops points at Espanyol on Saturday.

Madrid’s 6-2 rout of Malaga on Wednesday kept Barcelona from dethroning it as league champions, but even that commanding victory at the Santiago Bernabeu was drowned out by the jeers coach Jose Mourinho received from the home fans after his discrepancies with his players and club intensified in recent days.

“We are only thinking about winning the league on Sunday,” said Barcelona midfielder Sergio Busquets.

“But if had won it yesterday or if we win it on Saturday it will be just as important.

“Our fans deserve it. All of Barcelona’s fans are very proud of this title and are wanting us to win more.” More titles, however, will have to wait until next season.

LONDON - Alex Ferguson, Britain’s longest-serving and most decorated soccer manager, will retire at the end of the season after more than 26 years and nearly 1,500 matches at the helm of Manchester United, he announced on Wednesday. The 71-year-old Scot ended intense speculation that he was about to call time on his career by confirming he would step aside after champions United’s last game of the season at West Bromwich Albion on May 19.

His decision ends a glittering era at Old Trafford in which the club won 13 English league titles, two European Cups, five FA Cups and four League Cups as well as the FIFA Club World Cup. Former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho and Everton’s long-serving boss David Moyes, a Scot like Ferguson, are the bookmakers’ favourites to take over.

Ferguson arrived in Manchester in 1986 after Ron Atkinson was sacked and, after a difficult start, began building an empire that shows no sign of crumbling with the club recapturing the English title from Manchester City this season.

“The decision to retire is one that I have thought a great deal about and one that I have not taken lightly. It is the right time,” Ferguson, who has been in charge of 1,498 matches for the club, winning nearly 900 of them, said on United’s website (www. manutd.com).

SRINAGAR, India - A convicted Pakistani militant jailed in India died on Thursday in hospital after being beaten by another inmate in an apparent revenge attack for the death of an Indian spy prisoner, threatening already fraught relations between the two nations.

The death of Sanaullah Haq, also known as Sanaullah Ranjay, came a week after an Indian farmer convicted of spying died in Pakistan, leading to furious protests in India and criticism of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s government for going soft on its western neighbor.

“Although it’s scant consolation I’d like to offer a sincere apology to the family of Sanaullah Haq & my sympathies for their loss,” Omar Abdullah, the chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir state where Haq was imprisoned, wrote on Twitter on Thursday.

Pakistan, which is due to hold an election on Saturday, demanded an investigation into Haq’s death and said the attack was “a matter of deep concern.”

Indian interior minister Sushil Kumar Shinde said Haq’s body will be returned to Pakistan.

Haq, 64, had been in and out

of Indian jails since 1989 for spying and “subversive activities,” a senior police officer said. He was badly beaten last week in the prison gardens by a jailed Indian soldier, the prison superintendent said at the time, in an apparent revenge attack for the similar, fatal beating of Sarabjit Singh, the convicted Indian spy who died in Pakistan. Singh’s family says he was innocent.

Singh was given a formal funeral, including a 21 gun salute, by the government of the state of Punjab in his home town close the border with Pakistan.

BITTER TIES India and Pakistan have fought three wars since the partition of British-ruled India in 1947. They began a peace process in 2004 and have gradually improved trade ties, but remain deeply suspicious of each other. Relations

have been strained by several incidents this year.

The Pakistani government issued a travel advisory to its citizens on Tuesday, asking them to “exercise due caution and care” in India. It said the safety and security of Pakistani visitors in India, particularly those at an annual pilgrimage, could be in jeopardy.

In January, two Pakistani and two Indian soldiers were killed in an outbreak of violence in the disputed territory of Kashmir. It was the worst clash there since India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire nearly a decade ago, leading to angry reactions from both sides.

The Indian army launched a “massive” operation this week along the de facto border with Pakistan known as the Line of Control, after a group of militants were spotted in North Kashmir, said Brijesh Panday, an colonel of the Indian Army.

LAGOS, Nigeria — An ethnic militia killed at least 20 police officers who launched a raid to try and arrest them in central Nigeria, a police commissioner said Wednesday.

The attack in Alakio, a village in Nasarawa state, saw the officers ambushed Tuesday when they tried to stop the gang that was forcing locals to take a blood oath, police commissioner Abayomi Akermale said. Nigeria, a nation of more than 160 million people, has some 250 ethnicities. Such ethnic militias can be major presences in communities, exacting taxes and controlling areas in some places.

Akermale said the death toll in the attack could be higher, as emergency officials and police officers only reached the area on Wednesday. The commissioner declined to offer any other specific details about the attack, other than to say those responsible were not Islamic extremists.

The violence, which occurred in a state bordering Nigeria’s central capital of Abuja, comes amid growing insecurity in the oil-rich nation. Islamic extremists, including those belonging to the radical network known as Boko Haram, have been launching increasingly bloody guerrilla attacks throughout the country’s predominantly Muslim north.

Ethnic militias, as well as criminal gangs known in Nigeria as “cults,” kill at will and kidnap others for ransom. Some gangs use traditional beliefs to instill loyalty from their followers, as well as strike fear into the local population. Such gangs also are known for using extreme violence and conducting rituals involving local witchcraft.

Bangladesh factory fire kills eight; collapse toll tops 900 Reuters

DHAKA - Eight people were killed when a fire swept through a clothing factory in Bangladesh, police and an industry association official said on Thursday, as the death toll from the collapse of another factory building two weeks ago climbed above 900.

The fire, in an industrial district of Dhaka, comes amid global attention on safety standards in Bangladesh’s booming garment industry following the catastrophic collapse of Rana Plaza, on the outskirts of the city, in the world’s deadliest industrial accident since the Bhopal disaster in India in 1984.

“It is not clear to us how the accident happened, but we are trying to find out the cause,” Mohammad Atiqul Islam, president of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), told Reuters.

On Wednesday the Bangladesh government said it had shut down 18 garment factories for safety reasons following the April 24 collapse of Rana Plaza, which housed five garment factories making clothes for Western brands. Six were cleared to re-open on Thursday after inspectors issued safety certificates.

Salvage teams were still pulling bodies from the rubble of the Rana Plaza complex in Savar, around 20 miles northwest of Dhaka, and on Thursday a spokesman at the army control room coordinating the operation said the number of people confirmed to have been killed had reached 912.

Roughly 2,500 people were rescued from the building, including many injured, but there is no official estimate of the numbers still missing.

The government has blamed the owners and builders of the eightstorey complex for using shoddy building materials, including substandard rods, bricks and cement, and not obtaining the necessary clearances.

INDONESIA Anti-terror squad kills 7 militants Associated Press

JAKARTA — Indonesia’s elite anti-terrorism unit conducted several often bloody operations to root out suspected Islamic militants, killing seven and arresting 13 others, police said Thursday as they continued to investigate an alleged plot to bomb the Myanmar Embassy.

Investigators said the suspected militants robbed banks and committed other thefts to fund terrorism. Police were trying to determine whether any of the groups raided Wednesday and Thursday were connected to last week’s alleged plot to retaliate against Myanmar for recent attacks on Muslims in that country.

Police shot and killed three suspected militants early Thursday after an all-night standoff at a house in the Central Java town of Kebumen. Four others were arrested, said National Police spokesman Brig. Gen. Boy Rafli Amar.

Amar said at a news conference that the militants had planned to carry out a robbery. He said those were killed had refused to surrender and fired guns and lobbed homemade bombs at security forces.

The day before in the West Java village of Cigondewah, three suspected terrorists were fatally shot after holing up for hours inside a house, said National Police chief Gen. Timur Pradopo. He said the suspects also engaged in a shootout and hurled bombs. One suspect was taken into custody, and Amar said another had been arrested a day earlier.

No officers were hurt in either incident.

Police said they had acted on information they obtained through interrogating an alleged gun maker arrested Tuesday in the West Java village of Cipacing. Intelligence gathered from subsequent arrests allowed authorities to quickly move in and storm hideouts in the separate areas, Amar said.

A suspected militant was killed, and another arrested, in Central Java’s Batang town on Wednesday. Amar said in a text message that they were suspected in a March jewelry shop robbery in Jakarta. A second suspect was also arrested in Kendal, Central Java.

Also on Wednesday, the antiterror squad arrested five suspects in Jakarta, Indonesia’s capital, and in neighboring Banten province.

Authorities involved in the various operations also seized firearms, ammunition and explosives.

Amar said the 13 suspects cap-

tured and seven killed Wednesday and Thursday were linked to groups in Poso, a flashpoint of terrorism in Central Sulawesi where a MuslimChristian conflict killed at least 1,000 people from 1998 to 2002.

They were also allegedly involved in thefts to fund their terrorist activities, including three bank robberies, Amar said. He also alleged that they had planned to set the Glodok market, Jakarta’s largest, on fire, though he provided no details.

It was not immediately known if the suspected militants were connected to last week’s alleged plot against the Myanmar Embassy. Sectarian violence in that Buddhist-majority country has killed scores of people, and tens of thousands of Muslims have been driven from their homes.

Last week, two suspects were arrested in Jakarta with five homemade bombs in a backpack. Other explosive materials were recovered inside a house they rented in the city.

Indonesia, the world’s most popu-

lous Muslim nation, has been battling terrorists since bombings on the resort island of Bali in 2002 killed 202 people, mostly foreign tourists.

Clusters of arrests involving suspected terrorists at various sites are common once the terrorism force, known as Densus 88, receives information. Formed after the Bali attacks, it has received American and Australian financial and technical assistance and has been instrumental in the arrests of hundreds of militants over the past decade. It is credited with reducing the threat of further attacks on Western interests in the country, but the squad had been criticized for the high number of deaths resulting from its raids. More than 70 suspects have been killed since the unit was established.

Terrorist attacks aimed at foreigners in Indonesia have been largely replaced in recent years by smaller, less deadly strikes targeting the government, mainly police and antiterrorism forces.

Germany agreed to export over 100 tanks to Indonesia Associated Press

BERLIN — The German government has approved plans to export 104 main battle tanks to Indonesia along with dozens of other armored vehicles — drawing criticism from the opposition in Berlin.

The government confirmed the authorization in its reply to a question from opposition Green party lawmaker Katja Keul, who released the letter Wednesday. The Economy Ministry said the authorization also allows for the delivery of 50 infantry fighting vehicles, along with 10 support vehicles and ammunition.

Germany has taken an increasing role in global security over recent years but remains generally reluctant to commit its own troops.

Chancellor Angela Merkel, who visited Indonesia last year, has argued that it makes sense to “help trustworthy partners” ensure security in their own regions, sometimes by delivering military equipment.

The opposition has argued that her government is too ready to export weapons to sensitive areas and complained that the process of approving weapons exports, with decisions taken in secret by a small group of ministers and made public only months later, isn’t sufficiently transparent.

Last month, a German company said it had signed a deal with Qatar to supply the Gulf emirate with 62 new tanks and 24 self-propelled howitzers.

Gernot Erler, a senior lawmaker with the opposition Social Democrats and a former deputy foreign minister, said that human rights have been violated repeatedly in Indonesia so it could not be certain the tanks are being bought “just for the purpose of defending the country.”

But Merkel’s spokesman, Steffen Seibert, pointed to Indonesia’s transition to democracy over the past 15 years and quoted Merkel as saying that the country has “an exemplary function as far as people of different religions living together is concerned.”

“Kalaibin went to a police office to surrender and was accompanied by several local religious leaders,” said Deputy Chief of the Papua Provincial Police Brigadier General Paulus Waterpau here on Wednesday.

Several armed members of Kalaibin’s gang had attacked a joint security team in Aimas village, where it had been reported that separatist OPM’s star flag had been hoisted.

When entering the village, the security officers and Kalaibin’s armed members were involved in a clash that killed three members of Kalaibin.

“Kalaibin is now being detained in Aimas Resort Police Office of Sorong District, and being interrogated intensively,” Waterpauw said.

The join security team consisting of the Indonesia Military (TNI) and Police officers were attacked by the armed group when they entered Aimas.

Armed men attacked the officers, damaged their vehicles and injured a military officer’s head.

The security officers responded by shooting at them. Two separatists were killed and several others were injured in the incident.

An injured separatist identified as Salomina Kalaibin was later dead in Sele Be Solo Regional Public Hospital in Aimas village. Salomina Kalaibin was a member of Isak Kalaibin’s group.

GENEVA — Brazilian Ambassador Robert Azevedo said Wednesday that his first priority as the new leader of the World Trade Organization will be to try to rescue its credibility as a forum for trade negotiations.

Azevedo, in his first appearance as the presumed next WTO director general, said the organization’s prestige is on the line because it is used more to settle trade disputes and monitor policy than as a host for serious trade negotiations.

“We are at a critical stage.

The negotiating pillar of the WTO is completely stuck.

There is a clear paralysis in the system,” he told a packed room of journalists at Brazil’s WTO mission. “We have a trade agenda that we have to broaden and tackle.”

Back at the WTO, diplomats and officials offered their congratulations to Azevedo who won consensus support from the organization’s 159 members, most of them nations, to serve at the helm of WTO for the next four years. In a state-

ment, the WTO said Azevedo was selected because of the breadth and consistency of his support among members measured in terms of geographical representation and the spectrum of rich-to-developing nations.

He prevailed over Mexican former trade minister Herminio Blanco in the final round, from an initial field of nine candidates that also included contenders from Ghana, Costa Rica, Indonesia, New Zealand, Kenya, Jordan and South Korea.

His selection is to be made final later this month, after which he will become the first Latin American to head the Genevabased trade organization since its creation in 1995.

Though it can serve as a forum for governments to negotiate trade agreements, the WTO is most often the place where

they settle trade disputes according to international trade rules. Increasingly, nations have resorted to negotiating outside the WTO along regional and bilateral lines.

But Azevedo, who has been posted at the WTO for the past five years, drew on his insider status and reputation for brokering deals among parties to make the case that he could best reform the institution.

“One skill we certainly admire is an ability for building consensus,” said U.S. Ambassador to the WTO Michael Punke. “And we certainly think that will be a very key skill that he will need in this job, and we wish him all the best.”

Azevedo is to take over the organization on Sept. 1 from Pascal Lamy of France, who has been the director general for eight years.

WELLINGTON - During 26 years at the helm of Chinese tech giant Huawei, founder Ren Zhengfei has never once agreed to be interviewed by a journalist.

Until Thursday.

During a visit to the company’s New Zealand operations, Ren sat down with four local journalists at a Wellington hotel. The rules were strict: no international media, no photos.

But the meaning was clear. Huawei is taking steps toward trying to dispel its image as a secretive and opaque company, and to reassure the world of its good intentions.

The telecommunications equipment company has suffered business setbacks in the U.S. and Australia due to fears it could be a security risk. Last October, a U.S. congressional panel recommended telephone companies avoid doing business with it. Huawei issued a pledge not to cooperate with spying, and argues the U.S. is engaging in trade protectionism.

Huawei has grown rapidly in developing countries and is increasing its sales in Europe. Last year, it reported a $2.4 billion profit on sales of $35 billion.

Ren, 68, a former Chinese military engineer, declined through spokesman Scott Sykes to be interviewed by The Associated Press. Sykes said Ren felt more comfortable with a small group of journalists and chose New Zealand to break his silence because he has strong, positive feelings about the country “in his heart.”

through an interpreter, told reporters his company’s relationship with the Chinese government was no different from that between companies from other countries and their governments, according to a report by Fairfax Media.

Ren said he was confident no member of Huawei’s staff would engage in spying, even if asked to by Chinese security agencies. He said he’d joined the Communist Party in 1978 when it was expected all “exceptional” people would do so.

“At that time my personal belief was to work hard, dedicate myself or even sacrifice myself for the benefit of the people,” he said, according to Fairfax Media. “Joining the Communist Party was in line with that aspiration.”

Sykes said the company is trying to tell its story and dispel misinformation. He said that’s particularly important as Huawei moves from doing business only with other phone companies toward selling products such as smartphones directly to consumers.

New Zealand was the first developed country to sign a free trade agreement with China in 2008 and has developed close economic ties since then.

Huawei employs about 120 people in New Zealand. Last year it won a contract to work on the country’s broadband infrastructure — something it was denied in neighboring Australia — and this year it won a contract to help build a mobile network.

Ren owns 1.4 percent of Huawei.

Forbes magazine last year estimated his wealth at $475 million.

German drug smuggler sentenced to 5 years in Indonesia DENPASAR - An Indonesian court sentenced a German man Wednesday to five years in prison for attempting to smuggle hashish onto the resort island of Bali.

Martin Robert Moller, 41, was detained in December by customs officials with 232 grams (8.2 ounces) of hashish in two capsules as he arrived at the island’s international airport from Bangkok on a Thai Airways flight.

Judge Sugeng Riyono said the sentence was in line with the country’s current programme to fight drugs.

“This sentence will prevent him from committing such an act again, and serves as a warning to others thinking of smuggling drugs into Bali,” Riyono told the Denpasar District Court.

Moller’s lawyer Gusti Putu Maya Arsanti said his client “admitted his mistake and has shown regret”.

Indonesia has stiff penalties for drug trafficking, including life imprisonment and death.

On May 1, German national Rolf Oskar Josef Schweikert, 57, was handed a life sentence for trying to smuggle 3.7 kilogrammes of hashish into the island of Lombok.

And British grandmother Lindsay Sandiford was sentenced to death in January after cocaine with a street value of $2.4 million was found in her suitcase as she arrived on Bali.

In March, Indonesian resumed executions after a hiatus of several years when a Malawian drug smuggler was put to death.

In years to come, it should be rethought about the security standards at the time of applying for the permit of tourist accommodation. “We will consider whether it is necessary to require the standardization of security in details such as the security equipment and security personnel when submitting the permit. Remaining mosquito repellent, room burnt Tabanan (Bali Post)-

A warning has been stated for those using burning required mosquito repellent. Wayan Agus Hendra Setiawab (23) from Banjar Kesiut Kawan Klod, Kesiut, Kerambitan had his room totally burnt last Tuesday (7/5) because of a remaining mosquito repellent still burnt. The fire was known by victim’s grandmother around 9 am local time.

The house was empty at the time as all were working including victim working in the State Electricity Company.

Luckily there were no casualties. “I did forget to turn off the remaining of the repellent. I do use it every night,” Agus explained.

As fire got bigger, locals helped out turning off the fire with limited equipments including using pipes.

Tabanan Fire Brigade did arrive and managed to turn off the fire yet all items within the house have gone away including the bed, television and a small shelf. Ceilings and windows were also collapsed. It is still unknown the total of loss experienced. “I’m okay if no items were saved as long as those in the house were safe,” Agus stated.

Head of Tabanan Fire Brigade, Suardi, stated to turn off the fire it did not take longs as locals have also tried to turn it off. Even so, the Fire Brigade had to make sure the fire is totally turned off and evacuated a number of items that can be saved. Japan pulls back on denials of WWII sex slavery

Putin made his short speech at the culmination of Victory Day, marking the defeat of Nazi Germany 68 years ago. It is Russia’s most important secular holiday, honoring the huge military and civilian losses of World War II and showing off the country’s modern arsenal.

Putin told 11,000 servicemen standing in tight formation on the square and the war veterans in the spectator stands that “we remember what the tragedy of war means

and will do everything so that nobody will ever dare to unleash it anew, threaten our children, our homes and our land.”

He added, “We will do everything to strengthen security on the planet.” The Soviet Union lost an estimated 26 million people in the war, of whom 8.5 million were soldiers. Among the thousands of spectators along the square were elderly World War II veterans, displaying rows of medals.

Putin lauded them, saying “We

will always remember that it was Russia, the Soviet Union, that ruined the misanthropic, bloody, arrogant plans of the fascists.”

The precisely choreographed parade included servicemen marching through the 5.5-acre (2.3-hectare) square and a convoy of more than 100 military vehicles ranging from armored cars to mobile missile-launchers and tanks. In the concluding display, more than 60 military aircraft flew over the square in close formation.

Tens of thousands of students in Chile have resumed their protests for free education with marches in major cities. The march in the capital, Santiago, was largely peaceful, but there were isolated clashes, authorities say.

Riot police said that they had been attacked with petrol bombs.

Police used water cannons and tear gas to break up one group of protesters. Chilean students have been staging protests for free, high-quality education since 2011.

ond nationwide protest this year.

The police estimated the number of protesters in Santiago at more than 37,000 but organisers say 80,000 people took to the streets.

TOKYO — Japan has acknowledged that it conducted only a limited investigation before claiming there was no official evidence that its imperial troops coerced Asian women into sexual slavery before and during World War II. A parliamentary statement signed Tuesday by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe acknowledged the government had a set of documents produced by a postwar international military tribunal containing testimony by Japanese soldiers about abducting Chinese women as military sex slaves.

That evidence apparently was not included in Japan’s only investigation of the issue, in 1991-1993.

Tuesday’s parliamentary statement also said documents showing forcible sex slavery may still exist. The statement did not say whether the government plans to consider the documents as evidence showing that troops had coerced women into sexual slavery.

Over the past two days, top officials of Abe’s conservative government have appeared to soften their stance on Japan’s past apologies to neighboring countries for wartime atrocities committed by the Imperial Army, saying Japan does not plan to revise them.

The backtracking appears intended to allay criticisms of Abe’s earlier vows to revise the apologies, including an acknowledgment of sexual slavery during the war, and calm tensions with neighbors South Korea and China. The U.S. government also has raised concerns about Abe’s nationalist agenda.

Abe has acknowledged so-called “comfort women” existed but denied they were coerced into prostitution, citing a lack of official evidence. He also has repeatedly vowed to reassess apologies by past Japanese administrations.

The parliamentary statement, released Tuesday and seen by the Associated Press on Wednesday, was in response to an official inquiry last month to the upper house of Parliament by opposition lawmaker Tomoko Kami, who said the government’s investigation into sex slavery was “insufficient” and documents it claimed to have collected were incomplete.

Kami, of the Japan Communist Party, also asked whether the government had ever updated its archives to reflect more recent findings than the earlier investigation. The answer was no.

The statement acknowledged documents produced by the 1946-1948 International Military Tribunal for the Far East, held in Tokyo, but said they were not in the Cabinet Secretariat’s archives. It did not say when the documents were found or whether they are reflected in any official statements about sexual slavery.

Abe also has criticized the tribunal’s decisions as “condemnation by the allied victors’ judgment,” but has said he’s in no position to object to the rulings Japan had already accepted.

The parliamentary statement described the 1993 findings as “the result of an all-out and sincere investigation” that brought “closure.” But it said the government is open to updates if new findings are valid.

NEW YORK — Coca-Cola says it will make lower-calorie options and clear calorie labeling more widely available around the world, intensifying a push against critics who say its drinks pack on the pounds.

The Atlanta-based company, which makes Sprite, Fanta and Minute Maid, already offers diet drinks in most markets. But there’s no consistency in their availability, particularly in emerging markets such as China and India.

Coca-Cola also said Wednesday that it would support programs that encourage physical activity and no longer market to kids younger than 12.

The company had made a similar promise in 2007 but said the new push would create a “global standard” for the commitment.

It did not elaborate on what changes that would include or set a timetable on when it planned to meet its new goals.

With sugary drinks often blamed for making people fat, Coca-Cola Co. has been more aggressive in trying to convince customers its products can be part of a healthy lifestyle. Earlier this year, the company aired its first TV ad addressing the matter in the U.S. and has since been rolling out the spot to other countries.

The ad touts Coca-Cola’s wide range of lower-calorie offerings. But executives have also made a point of standing by the company’s fullcalorie drinks, saying that physical activity plays an important role in fighting obesity.

“There is a place for all of our beverages in a healthy lifestyle,” CEO Muhtar Kent said in a call with reporters.

The announcement from Coca-Cola comes as packaged food companies across the industry look for growth in emerging markets, where middleclass populations are growing rapidly. As more people head to cities and see their incomes rise, health advocates have warned that growing consumption of packaged foods in such countries could fuel obesity rates as they have in developed nations.

The shifting populations around the world nevertheless represent an enormous opportunity for companies. For example, Coca-Cola has noted that Americans on average drink 403 servings of its various beverages a year. That compares with just 12 servings per year in India and 38 in China.

And the company’s diet options aren’t nearly as popular in such countries as they are back at home. In the U.S., where soda consumption has been declining for years, diet drinks now account for 41 percent of sales for the flagship Coke brand. That’s up from single-digits in the 1980s.

Even in major Chinese cities, by contrast, the percentage of sales that diet options account for is in the “high single digits,” Kent said.

Coca-Cola Co. says its goal is to have diet options available wherever regular versions are sold. But that doesn’t mean there would be a diet alternative for every particular brand. For example, if a store in India sells Coke it might also offer Sprite Zero, which doesn’t have any calories, to meet the goal.

The company also says it’s working to have cans and bottles around the world display calories counts on the front of labels, as it does in the United States.

NEW YORK — The Rockettes are best known for dancing at the Radio City Christmas Spectacular, but they did their signature kick line on a cruise ship Wednesday. The dancers are the godmothers for Norwegian Cruise Line’s new ship, Norwegian Breakaway, which was christened at a pier on the Hudson River.

The ship is themed on New York City, with a colorful mural on the exterior hull design by pop artist Peter Max featuring the city skyline and the Statue of Liberty.

Max attended the christening Wednesday with Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the Catholic archbishop for New York. He blessed the ship. Introducing the dozen high-stepping Rockettes in silver sequined costumes, the mayor said, “I don’t think anyone symbolizes our city’s energy, glamour and excitement more.”

Bloomberg also observed that with all the Big Apple touches onboard, “Breakaway passengers will never really leave New York behind.”

The ship offers ice sculptures of Lady Liberty, the Brooklyn Bridge and the Chrysler Building at an ice bar, and its shows include a version of the Broadway ‘80s rock musical, “Rock of Ages.” Passengers can take a fitness class designed by the Rockettes, and two Rockettes will sail on each of the first six trips beginning Sunday, and on the first sailing of each month thereafter.

A Sabrett hot dog stand, complete with yellow umbrella, serves guests near an area called Rockaway Beach.

Norwegian Cruise Line CEO Kevin Sheehan, a native New Yorker, proved his own street cred by showing off a copy of his decadesold license to drive a yellow taxi.

Sheehan said the ship “takes the best elements of New York City” and brings them to sea.

With a capacity of 4,000 passengers, the 18-deck vessel is the biggest cruise ship to homeport year-round in Manhattan. On Sunday, the Breakaway begins its summer itinerary of seven-day trips to Bermuda. The ship will sail to the Bahamas and Florida in the winter.

At a pre-christening party Tuesday night, Max said it was “unbelievable to have something so big with my art on it.”

Not everything onboard has a New York connection. The ship will have an outpost of “Cake Boss” star Buddy Vlastro’s Hoboken, N.J., bakery, Carlo’s Bake Shop. Vlastro emceed the christening festivities,

showing off a large cake that looks exactly like the ship.

The ship also has a water park with five water slides, including free-fall slides, plus a three-story sports complex with nine-hole mini-golf, a basketball court and rock-climbing wall.

Norwegian Breakaway will have three eateries by Geoffrey Zakarian, a Food Network Iron Chef who has served as a top chef and restaurant owner at a number of New York City venues.

Zakarian’s Norwegian Breakaway restaurants are seafoodthemed: Ocean Blue, The Raw Bar and Ocean Blue on the Waterfront.

The ship’s 27 dining options also include ethnic restaurants like a Brazilian churrascaria and Shanghai’s Noodle Bar, along with the Manhattan Room, styled like a private supper club with dance floor.

An open-air boardwalk called The Waterfront offers al fresco dining and shopping venues with seaside views. The Waterfront is connected to a three-deck dining, entertainment and gaming area called 678 Ocean Place.

DENPASAR — Intention of the Indonesia Market Traders Association (APPSI) Bali to establish a wholesale market accommodating local agricultural products such as vegetables and fruits has never been realized. It occurs because the APPSI has difficulty to get the land.

“We have long planned to establish a wholesale market to market all the local agricultural products both vegetables and fruits coming from the mountain area in Denpasar. Unfortunately, to date we have not got the land,” said Chairman of the APPSI Bali, Ida Bagus Raka Wiryanata, when contacted by Bali Post.

He further said the procurement of wholesale market selling the local fruits and vegetables was one of the attempts to improve the fate of farmers. Aside from providing benefits for farmers through certain price, it was also capable of paying attention to the welfare of farmers.

“All this time, most of the farmers sell their products to middlemen, so that the price on offer was in speculative nature,” he said.

Establishment of a wholesale market for the agricultural products, he admitted, was one f the forms to drive the economy of Balinese people that should be undertaken by the government. To date, the constraint always complained about by Balinese farmers in particular was the unavailability of sufficient market. On that account, when harvest season fell, the agricultural prices declined quite dramatically or the products decayed due to lack of market.

“At least, through the wholesale market we expect to give an advantage of 10-15 percent of the cost of production, so that farmers will constantly be motivated to yield products by persistently paying attention to the quality of products,” he said.

Ida Bagus Raka explained that a wholesale market was different from traditional market and modern market. Its presence was dedicated to create a standardization of price, production, and quality management of the agricultural products. Currently, the agricultural products were not well coordinated, both in terms of price, quality and production desired by the market and the quantity produced by farmers, so that it frequently kindled an overproduction of the commodity that finally led to price decline. “Basically, in the future the farmers are unnecessary to worry and think about where to market their products. Besides, the traditional and modern markets will be easier to get the agricultural products. In short, all the parties will benefit from this wholesale market,” he said. (kmb28)

“Moreover, I’ve heard the development fund is even deposited in the bank. The fund should not be deposited in the bank, but will be better to be used for the agricultural development.

Make synergy between the agriculture and tourism,” he said.

When talking about the agriculture, according to him, the paradigm of agribusiness, land factor, irrigation, institution, technology and human resources should be holistically developed. “If necessary, make a research and development as well as set the promotional envoy of the agriculture in Bali, so that the governor does not need to make site inspection to the field, but implement the action plan immediately,” he said.

of seeds and fertilizers as well as lack of marketing. According to Suparta, it happened because the agency head might be too frightened due to strong militaristic-futuristic and less humane leadership style.

Meanwhile, according to Chairman of the Subak Research Center (PPS) of the Udayana University, Prof. I Wayan Windia, about 45 percent of Bali’s population still depended on the agriculture. Ironically, contribution of the sector to the gross regional domestic product (RGDP) remained low at only 19 percent. “Growth in the agricultural sector is relatively small, namely 2.1 percent. The growth is small, while those working in the agricultural sector are very large so that the productivity in the agricultural sector stays low,” he said.

Such condition was aggravated by the very little investment in the agricultural sector, namely less than one percent. The professor of the Faculty of Agriculture, Udayana University, also clearly explained the value added in the agriculture was the lowest, namely 2.5 million, when compared to the industrial and tourism sector. Even, the land tax (PBB) was very suffocating and burdensome for farmers that never had money in cash because their income had run out for

consumption. Meanwhile, the land tax (PBB) increased every two years (adjusted to inflation), and the basic reference of land tax collection was location of the land, rather than the production of land.

“On that account, the price of input is very expensive, while the price of output is generally low at the harvest time,” he explained.

He recognized the income of farmers was averagely IDR 2.5 million per month for the cultivation of one-hectare wetland. On average, farmers only cultivated 0.30 hectare of land. “Sometimes, farmers are still difficult to get water because the irrigation water is contested by the Municipality Waterworks (PDAM) and tourism sector as well as has got polluted. These causes make farmers very reluctant to farm. Ironically, they feel more comfortable when selling their farmland. As evidence, within the past 5 years, the rice field in Bali reduced averagely more than 1,000 hectares per year,” he explained.

In the future, he hoped the existence of subak irrigation systems should be guaranteed. Subak organizations in Bali should be provided with the assistance, so that each subak can develop their economic activity and get education to run a business/trade as well as develop the technology in downstream or upstream area. GENEVA — Brazilian Ambassador Robert Azevedo said Wednesday that his first priority as the new leader of the World Trade Organization will be to try to rescue its credibility as a forum for trade negotiations.

Azevedo, in his first appearance as the presumed next WTO director general, said the organization’s prestige is on the line because it is used more to settle trade disputes and monitor policy than as a host for serious trade negotiations.

“We are at a critical stage.

The negotiating pillar of the WTO is completely stuck.

There is a clear paralysis in the system,” he told a packed room of journalists at Brazil’s WTO mission. “We have a trade agenda that we have to broaden and tackle.”

Back at the WTO, diplomats and officials offered their congratulations to Azevedo who won consensus support from the organization’s 159 members, most of them nations, to serve at the helm of WTO for the next four years. In a state-

ment, the WTO said Azevedo was selected because of the breadth and consistency of his support among members measured in terms of geographical representation and the spectrum of rich-to-developing nations.

He prevailed over Mexican former trade minister Herminio Blanco in the final round, from an initial field of nine candidates that also included contenders from Ghana, Costa Rica, Indonesia, New Zealand, Kenya, Jordan and South Korea.

His selection is to be made final later this month, after which he will become the first Latin American to head the Genevabased trade organization since its creation in 1995.

Though it can serve as a forum for governments to negotiate trade agreements, the WTO is most often the place where

they settle trade disputes according to international trade rules. Increasingly, nations have resorted to negotiating outside the WTO along regional and bilateral lines.

But Azevedo, who has been posted at the WTO for the past five years, drew on his insider status and reputation for brokering deals among parties to make the case that he could best reform the institution.

“One skill we certainly admire is an ability for building consensus,” said U.S. Ambassador to the WTO Michael Punke. “And we certainly think that will be a very key skill that he will need in this job, and we wish him all the best.”

Azevedo is to take over the organization on Sept. 1 from Pascal Lamy of France, who has been the director general for eight years.

WELLINGTON - During 26 years at the helm of Chinese tech giant Huawei, founder Ren Zhengfei has never once agreed to be interviewed by a journalist.

Until Thursday.

During a visit to the company’s New Zealand operations, Ren sat down with four local journalists at a Wellington hotel. The rules were strict: no international media, no photos.

But the meaning was clear. Huawei is taking steps toward trying to dispel its image as a secretive and opaque company, and to reassure the world of its good intentions.

The telecommunications equipment company has suffered business setbacks in the U.S. and Australia due to fears it could be a security risk. Last October, a U.S. congressional panel recommended telephone companies avoid doing business with it. Huawei issued a pledge not to cooperate with spying, and argues the U.S. is engaging in trade protectionism.

Huawei has grown rapidly in developing countries and is increasing its sales in Europe. Last year, it reported a $2.4 billion profit on sales of $35 billion.

Ren, 68, a former Chinese military engineer, declined through spokesman Scott Sykes to be interviewed by The Associated Press. Sykes said Ren felt more comfortable with a small group of journalists and chose New Zealand to break his silence because he has strong, positive feelings about the country “in his heart.”

In his interview, Ren, speaking

through an interpreter, told reporters his company’s relationship with the Chinese government was no different from that between companies from other countries and their governments, according to a report by Fairfax Media.

Ren said he was confident no member of Huawei’s staff would engage in spying, even if asked to by Chinese security agencies. He said he’d joined the Communist Party in 1978 when it was expected all “exceptional” people would do so.

“At that time my personal belief was to work hard, dedicate myself or even sacrifice myself for the benefit of the people,” he said, according to Fairfax Media. “Joining the Communist Party was in line with that aspiration.”

Sykes said the company is trying to tell its story and dispel misinformation. He said that’s particularly important as Huawei moves from doing business only with other phone companies toward selling products such as smartphones directly to consumers.

New Zealand was the first developed country to sign a free trade agreement with China in 2008 and has developed close economic ties since then.

Huawei employs about 120 people in New Zealand. Last year it won a contract to work on the country’s broadband infrastructure — something it was denied in neighboring Australia — and this year it won a contract to help build a mobile network.

Ren owns 1.4 percent of Huawei.

Forbes magazine last year estimated his wealth at $475 million.

German drug smuggler sentenced to 5 years in Indonesia DENPASAR - An Indonesian court sentenced a German man Wednesday to five years in prison for attempting to smuggle hashish onto the resort island of Bali.

Martin Robert Moller, 41, was detained in December by customs officials with 232 grams (8.2 ounces) of hashish in two capsules as he arrived at the island’s international airport from Bangkok on a Thai Airways flight.

Judge Sugeng Riyono said the sentence was in line with the country’s current programme to fight drugs.

“This sentence will prevent him from committing such an act again, and serves as a warning to others thinking of smuggling drugs into Bali,” Riyono told the Denpasar District Court.

“As a regional working unit (SKPD), the regent gives us a task to take measures related to the accommodation facilities. And tomorrow (Wednesday—Ed), we invite police authority to discuss about the development implementation and dissemination on the security standards for the accommodation business in Badung,” said the Head of Badung Government Tourism Office, Tjokorda Raka Darmawan.

Such activity had actually been carried out regularly. This year, it had entered the sixth year. However, Raka Darmawan admitted the very large

number of tourist accommodation in Badung became an obstacle so that the development in security field was not maximal. His party could only provide development to 75 businesses per year. “Providing development on the security issues for tourism business takes about six months. Meanwhile, the tourist accommodation in Badung County reaches thousands of units,” he said.

He added the most sensitive tourist accommodation needing extra vigilance was villa. A single unit of villa was even very difficult to identify.

“The permit issued by the government

is only intended for tourist accommodation marketed daily. However, those leased for long-term period do not include in the hotel accommodation facilities. This type of business is very difficult to control. And we’d like to appeal to people running such kind of business to be responsible for the safety of their guests,” he said.

According to him, security of the in-house guests could not only be borne to police authority. The entrepreneurs should also make cooperation with all parties. In years to come, it should be rethought about the security standards at the time of applying for the permit of tourist accommodation. “We will consider whether it is necessary to require the standardization of security in details such as the security equipment and security personnel when submitting the permit. TAIPEI, Taiwan — Academy Award-winning director Ang Lee says that modesty and diligence have been the keys to his success in penetrating the foreign cultures that have framed the backgrounds for many of his most notable films.

Lee won his second best director Oscar for “Life of Pi” earlier this year.

He also won the best director award for “Brokeback Mountain” in 2005.

Speaking to reporters Thursday in his native Taiwan, Lee said “I have to read everything and watch everything” before directing films with distinctly non-Chinese themes, like “Sense and Sensibility,” which takes place in early 19th century England, or “Brokeback Mountain,” a gay love story set in late 20th century Wyoming.

His next project — a television series for FX entitled “Tyrant” — focuses on the contemporary Middle East.

Chairman of the Indonesian Conference and Convention Association (INCCA) Bali, I.B. Surakusuma, said the BPPD could include the potential of local fruits into the materials of promotional agenda because it was indeed directing tourists to spend holidays in Bali by introducing the tourism potential of Bali in general.

“Representatives of the associations or tourism players in charge in the BPPD must know about the potential of tourism in Bali. They shall include the potential of local fruits in the promotional materials,” said I.B. Surakusuma.

In the exposure of Bali tourism potential, he said, any information could be included such as regarding the potential of local fruits.

Travelers would like to know about the local fruits existing in Bali because the island had a wide variety of local fruits.

Among them, there were jackfruit, rambutan, lychee, snakefruit and so on.

“Travelers will see the exceptional potential of the agriculture in Bali. Besides, they will surely also like to taste the local fruits,” he said.

According to him, tourism players should pay attention to local fruits. When imported fruits were made prominent products, the local fruit products would get marginalized. However,

when the local fruit products made prominent, it would certainly need the help of the government and tourism stakeholders.

“Government assistance can be made in the form of appeal and control in order that the hotel management takes advantage of the local fruits,” he said.

He explained that all the tourism stakeholders should be involved in promoting the Bali tourism. Apart from the BPPD, the hotel management also had an obligation to introduce local fruit products. The BPPD and hoteliers should not only introduce and promote local fruits.

“Other local products such as vegetables and meats can also be utilized by tourism sector. Potential local fruits should be used to strengthen the appeal of the product and the Bali tourism,” he said.

The Dean of the Faculty of Tourism, Udayana University, Putu Anom, said that business people engaged in tourism sector, especially in the hospitality, were obliged to absorb the local agricultural products. Stakeholders in tourism through tourism associations such as the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) and the Indonesian Tourism Industry Association (GIPI) Bali including the performers of the agricultural sector through the agricultural as-

sociations like the Indonesian Farmers’ Union (HKTI) Bali could make a clear contract with the government.

“At least, there is a government policy requiring that the tourism sector should take advantage of the local agricultural products,” he said.

According to him, tourists spending holidays in Bali would also feel useless because they were served with imported products from their home country. This should become a concern of the entrepreneurs in the tourism sector why they did not present local fruits/local agricultural products according to their season. “Travelers spending holidays in Bali want to feel what does not exist in their own country. It is consistent with the concept of curiosity,” he said.

He argued the local agricultural products like fruit and vegetable, including meat had a great potential to get absorbed into the hospitality sector though the agricultural and livestock products in Bali had not yet been fully absorbed by the market of tourism/hospitality.

“It is required a support in the form of regulation on the restriction of imported fruits, vegetables, and meat.

Provincial government needs to create a rule obliging the employers to purchase the local agricultural products and reduce the use of imported products,” he said. (kmb27)
