Rhea Seehorn answers call on ‘Better Call Saul’

NEW YORK — Kim Wexler may be the most quietly complicated character on TV. She is the levelheaded, nose-to-thegrindstone Albuquerque lawyer who, two seasons into “Better Call Saul,” remains full of mystery and contradictions. Most paradoxically (or so it seems): How, both professionally and romantically, Kim long ago threw in with fellow lawyer Jimmy McGill, the series’ hero played by Bob Odenkirk, a freewheeling rascal who cuts corners with such gusto his squares become circles. He, of course, will eventually double down on his duplicity by rebranding himself Saul Goodman and serving a key role in the meth-making mayhem of “Breaking Bad” (which aired from 2008 to 2013). But in “Saul,” the prequel of “Breaking Bad,” Jimmy’s soul remains in play as Kim appeals to his better nature, and he to hers. “There’s a lot of history between them, but also a lot of boundaries,” says Rhea Seehorn, who plays Kim. “It isn’t flirting and sexual in a superficial way. There’s a rich friendship and a real respect going back and forth. “Kim is a conduit for the audience

for what they love about him,” she adds. “No viewers want to think about how someday, as Saul, he will order hits on people, but we do love that Jimmy colors just outside the lines remarkably well. “I don’t look at each season of ‘Better Call Saul’ as a countdown to ‘Breaking Bad,’ thinking: ‘We’re this much closer to him being Saul.’ But in season three you get more glimpses of Saul emerging in Jimmy. This transformation is heartbreaking. “But he’s still a great lawyer,” she insists. “And a great thinker.” As “Saul” returns for its third season Monday at 10 p.m. EDT on AMC, Kim, too, remains a great lawyer, a great thinker and her own breed of enigma. Bombings at Egyptian Coptic churches kill 36, injure more than 100

TANTA/CAIRO - At least 36 people were killed and more than 100 injured in bomb attacks on two Coptic churches on Palm Sunday, in the latest assault on a religious minority increasingly targeted by Islamist militants. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attacks, which come a week before Coptic Easter and in the same month that Pope Francis is scheduled to visit Egypt. The first bombing, in Tanta, a Nile Delta city less than 100 kilometres outside Cairo, killed at least 25 and injured at least 78, Egypt’s Ministry of Health said. The second, carried out just a few hours later by a suicide bomber in Alexandria, hit the historic seat of the Coptic Pope, killing 11, including three police officers, and injuring 35, the ministry added. Pope Tawadros, who had attended mass at Saint Mark’s Cathedral, was still in the building at the time of the explosion but was not harmed, the Ministry of Interior said. The bombings come as Islamic State’s

branch in Egypt appears to be stepping up attacks and threats against Christians. In February, Christian families and students fled Egypt’s North Sinai province after a spate of targeted killings. Those attacks came after one of the deadliest on Egypt’s Christian minority, when a suicide bomber hit its largest Coptic cathedral, killing at least 25. Islamic State later claimed responsibility for the attack. Thousands gathered outside the church in Tanta shortly after the blast, some wearing black, crying, and describing a scene of carnage. “There was blood all over the floor

and body parts scattered,” said a Christian woman who was inside the church. “There was a huge explosion in the hall. Fire and smoke filled the room and the injuries were extremely severe,” another Christian woman, Vivian Fareeg, said. President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and Prime Minister Sherif Ismail are set to visit the Tanta site on Sunday and Sisi has ordered an emergency national defence council meeting, state news reported. Shoot drug traffickers in place

DENPASAR - President of the RI, Joko Widodo, has declared that Indonesia is currently in the emergency of drugs. Drum of war against drugs had been sounded. National Narcotics Agency (BNN) is even ready to shoot drug dealers. However, the act of shooting in place is often considered as something that violates the law and human rights. “The principle is like this. First of all, we still respect to the existence of the law. Actually, our conscience also supports it, but sometimes we worry about varied criticism of the NGOs and human rights activists. In my opinion, it is better to follow the law first or the legal system in accordance with our conditions in Indonesia,” said the member of Commission IV of the Bali House of Representatives, I Gede Suamba, when confirmed on Saturday (Apr. 8). Suamba added that all this time drug dealers and users indeed seem never deterrent. Even though threatened with the law, from life imprisonment to the death penalty, they are still desperate to control the circulation of drugs in society. However, the application of the law of shooting in place can result in risks of pros and cons. “However, if police or BNN does not echo it, they still have a strategy. For example, if the offenders are really proved, police can still shoot with the reasons of resisting, so that it should not be made into fuss first because it can draw pros and cons,” said this PDI-P politician from Tabanan. If it should be done, added Suamba, shooting in place must comply with legal procedures. If necessary, there must be regulation issued first as a legal instrument. In the meantime, Chairman of the Anti-Narcotics Movement (Granat), Henry Yosodiningrat, even encouraged the law enforcement officers to firmly crack down on drug dealers with a shooting in place because so far Indonesia has failed in law enforcement. There are still many persons of the BNN, police, prosecutors or judges both at central and regional levels that ‘get involved’ and do not get strict sanctions.

“In the law enforcement, I invite the government to do what the Philippines do. We do as what President Rodrigo Duterte does, shoot,” he said in the public discussion 2017 entitled ‘Young Generation, Generation without Drugs’ in the meeting hall of the PDI-P Bali, early last year. Drug traffickers tempted by profits and different sensation SINGARAJA - Drug trafficking in Buleleng Regency is quite rampant. It is indicated by the arrest of drug users and dealers by the Buleleng police narcotic investigation unit where from January to March reached dozens of people. They consist of users and dealers. They plunge into the cases due to be tempted by huge profits and the intention to feel different sensation. Chief of Buleleng Police Narcotics Investigation Unit, Ketut Adnyana T.J., with permission from the Buleleng Police Chief, Made Suka Wijaya, explained that for three months namely from January to March his unit had arrested 17 offenders of drug cases. In details, four people were arrested in January and seven other people in March. It indicates the circulation of drugs in Buleleng is still rampant. The offenders are not just from outside the island. A number of Balinese people are also registered both as users and dealers. “There is a tendency that the cases increase. Those who have been arrested are dealers and users,” he said recently. Based on the results of investigation, the illicit goods are obtained from dealers in Java. It happens because the purchasing price is relatively cheap, namely around IDR 1 million per gram. “Then, here (in Buleleng--Ed) it is sold for IDR 1.8 million. The profit is quite large. This triggers the circulation,” he said. Meanwhile, related to the users, their existence is just like an iceberg. Thus, it also gets a serious concern to be eradicated. “Those who consuming are triggered to feel different sensations,” continued this officer from Seririt. To anticipate the emergence of such cases, Adnyana claimed to have intensively disseminated both to general public and students. Chinese traveler sinks on Tanjung Benoa Beach

MANGUPURA - Travelers who were doing activities on Tanjung Benoa Beach, South Kuta, Badung, precisely at Novotel Hotel, were shocked on Tuesday (Apr. 4). It happened because a traveler from China, Wang Qian, 32, sank while swimming. The victim could be found and directly rushed to BIMC Hospital but he was declared to have died. Chief of Denpasar Waters Police, Ketut Suparta, when asked for his confirmation on Thursday (Apr. 6) justified the incident. Some witnesses have been examined, while the victim’s wife could not be questioned because of being severely shocked. “We have not yet known whether the victim could swim or not because his wife could not be questioned,” he said. According to witnesses, it hap-

pened at 10:30. The victim with his wife came to the beach in front of the hotel where they were staying. Once arriving on the beach, the victim took bath and joined the other guests, while his wife was waiting on the beach. Few minutes later, the witnesses Nyoman Arianta, 39, an employee of Bali Apollo, and Wayan Dana, a security guard of Novotel, saw the victim sinking at the bottom of the water. The victim was evacuated and taken to BIMC Hospital. After receiving treatment, a few moments later the victim was declared to have died. “The victim was found about 15 meters from the beach. Hong Kong promise to be the territory’s biggest and most spectacular ever

HONG KONG - Hong Kong is set to be bathed in colour and light as the Lunar New Year celebrations 2017 promise to be the territory’s biggest and most spectacular ever. Themed “Best Fortune. World Party”, the 2017 Cathay Pacific International Chinese New Year Night Parade will be held on the first day of Chinese New Year - 28 January - and feature the largest number of performers in the event’s history. Three-thousand local and international performers and ten illuminated floats will parade through the streets of Tsim Sha Tsui to usher in the year of the Rooster and commemorate the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative region. Volume overloaded

Garbage truck crews overwhelmed

SINGARAJA - It has become a habit that celebration of major Hindu feast days in Buleleng will result in increasing waste production compared to usual days. As on the recent Galungan, almost all locations of garbage containers belonging to Buleleng Environment Agency (DLH) at several locations were overloaded. Surely, this situation caused the crew of garbage transportation trucks in North Bali to be overwhelmed to cope with the increase of waste production in this region. Increased production of waste began to occur on Penampahan Galungan or Tuesday (Apr. 4) to Thursday (Apr. 6). Garbage containers of DLH Buleleng placed in Singaraja town to villages seemed overloaded. Moreover, the garbage spilled up onto roadside. This situation is disturbing sights because the garbage starts to perish and spread stenches. Amid the surge of garbage volume, transport activity became late because the DLH provided the opportunities for garbage transport crew to celebrate Galungan. They would be on duty late in the afternoon, so that such short time is not enough to transport the entire garbage. Head of the DLH Buleleng, Nyoman Genep, did not admit if the transportation of garbage on the feast day was overwhelmed. He said no garbage transportation crew took holidays. However, the transport time usually carried out in the morning is temporarily moved to late afternoon. Short time and greater volume of garbage than

on the ordinary days caused some garbage to be unable to be transported to landfill. To overcome the problem, the DLH optimized the transportation in accordance with schedule that started to be back to normal on Friday morning (Apr. 7). “It is a commonplace happening when entering feast day. No garbage trucks take holiday, but the garbage is transported in the afternoon. Indeed, there is some garbage remaining not to be transported, but we will optimize the transport from Friday because the schedule is back to normal after the holidays,” he said. Genep also added that the volume of garbage dumped at the location beyond the garbage containers on major feast days also increased. Responding this condition, DLH Buleleng is still transporting the garbage even though dumped by residents outside the containers. However, the transportation is not optimal. This happened because the officers transported first the garbage put at the location of container, after that it is resumed with the transport of garbage outside the containers. “Locations of the containers are in Singaraja and some others at rural areas. Beyond these, there is indeed garbage dumped at roadside or private land. We continue to serve the transportation, but first take at the location of containers. To avoid environmental interference, we hope the garbage should only be dumped at the location of containers,” he explained. (kmb38)

DENPASAR - The issues on the average length of stay of foreign travelers in Bali for 10.08 days in the version of ministry of tourism are continuously pursued by LKPJ Special Committee of the Bali House of Representatives. The data of the ministry differ much from the version of the central statistics agency (BPS) of Bali that only show 3.1 days. The special committee ultimately found the fact that within 10 days the foreign travelers are not entirely staying in Bali. However, they also ‘resume’ their travel to other regions in Indonesia. “So, the data (on average length of stay of 10.08 days) source from the ministry of tourism. The data indicate their arrival in Bali until departing from Bali. Probably they also travel to Banyuwangi or to Lombok, and then arrive again in Bali. After that, they return to their home country,” said the Head of the Bali Development Planning Board and R & D, I Putu Astawa, after meeting with the special committee regarding the accountability reports (LKPJ) of the regional leadership in the Bali parliament house on Monday (Apr. 3). Astawa recognized that the data of BPS are different from the data of the minister of tourism. It happens because BPS calculates the length of stay of foreign travelers during particular stay at star- rated hotels through a survey method. There is possibility that travelers moved from star rated hotels to the non-star rated or lower class. Nevertheless, the data of ministry of tourism and BPS are equally required for the planning of Bali provincial government. “All the data are important because those of the ministry of tourism can be used to calculate the amount of foreign exchange generated in Bali. Travelers making a visit to Bali, staying in Bali, spending money in Bali are counted as export of services. For the sake of our planning, both data must be elaborated and processed,” he said.

Astawa added there are many challenges faced by Bali to increase the length of stay when referring to the BPS data mentioning only 3.1 days. Among others, there are concerning transportation to other regions that have been getting easier. For example, there has been a flight access to Labuan Bajo or Lombok. Ease of the access definitely increases the interest of travelers to visit other regions in Indonesia. Besides, Bali is also faced with the competition against the 10-New Bali. “To work around this, we must create attractive destinations for travelers at home in Bali. We have to build tourism village, synergy between agriculture and tourism, and develop the potential of Nusa Penida to increase the length of stay,” he concluded. Chairman of the LKPJ Special Committee of the Bali House of Representatives, AAN Adhi Ardhana, said that recognition of the regional development planning agency (Bappeda) related to travelers ‘escaping’ Bali has reinforced the position of Bali as a tourism hub. However, it does not mean that Bali is unable to grab the opportunity to extend the length of stay of travelers on the Island of the Gods. “We agree to become a tourism hub so as to add potential guests. From this potential of guests we expect to get an increase in tourism revenue,” he said. Adhi Ardhana added that destinations in Bali should be explored in order to get maximum results. Thus, travelers that previously have spent one or two days outside Bali from a total of 3 days could be transformed into longer stay in Bali. As becoming a hub, travelers will certainly come out of Bali in addition to vacationing in Bali. “There has been chance of 10 days, why is it abandoned? At least, the average length of stay of the travelers could remain 5 days,” added this PDI-P politician from Denpasar. If the opportunities are abandoned, said Adhi Ardhana, Bali will also lose in terms of Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP). On that account, the average expenditure of USD 163 per foreign traveler per day or IDR 550,000 per domestic traveler per day will ‘fly’ to other regions. (kmb32)

If it were not afraid, it would not close the streets. ... It would not disqualify Capriles,” said 27-year-old lawyer Gikeissy Diaz, adding that half of her graduating class has left the country and that she is thinking of doing so, too. Capriles, a two-time presidential candidate and current Miranda state governor, who was seen by many as the opposition’s best chance in the presidential election scheduled for 2018, on Friday was banned from holding political office for 15 years. The order from the national comptroller’s office cited “administrative irregularities” including breaking contracting laws and improper management of donations, according to a copy of the ban. Retail store job cuts deepen as more buyers migrate online

NEW YORK — Retail stores are cutting jobs at the sharpest pace in more than seven years, evidence of a seemingly inexorable shift away from employee-heavy stores as Americans increasingly shop online. A combined 60,600 retail job losses over the past two months have had less to do with the health of U.S. consumer spending than with changes in buying habits. In the age of Amazon, traditional stores, from J.C. Penney to Macy’s, have accelerated store closures and are experimenting with the use of fewer employees to staff the remaining stores. The industry has also been bruised by a string of bankruptcy filings, most recently from Payless ShoeSource. The company announced this week that it was closing nearly 400 stores, nearly 10 percent of its fleet. The job cuts in the retail industry, unwelcome as they are, are still a relatively minor burden for the overall U.S. economy. But for Americans seeking a foothold in the job market, the pullback represents a painful obstacle. Retail accounts for nearly one-third of first-time jobs in the United States, so a retrenchment by the industry’s employers can block access to the job market for many. As shopping on the web has expanded, retail jobs have represented a declining share of the labor market. They now account for 10.9 percent of jobs, compared with 11.6 percent in 2000, says Michael Niemira, principal of The Retail Economist, a research firm. And experts expect more store closings — and job losses — in coming months. “It’s principally about the impact of online shopping and how consumers are shopping differently than ever before,” Niemira said. “It’s harder for the industry to consistently do well and MAKE MONEY.” Take Fernando Ramirez, a 19year-old restaurant server and college student, who was looking Friday to buy some sweaters at a Kohl’s in Tustin, California. Ramirez said he stops at a department store or mall once or twice a week to see what’s available. But most of his buying is done on the web. “It’s mostly to browse and see

what they have,” said Ramirez, who lives in Tustin, Calif. “I do more of my purchasing online now.” The two-month contraction in retail jobs — 30,900 lost in February and 29,700 in March — marked the largest two-month decline since December 2009, when the industry shed 62,200 jobs. That month’s loss had signaled the end of a prolonged decline in the industry resulting from the Great Recession. The retail industry losses for February and March were contained in Friday’s U.S. jobs report from the government. The report offered an overall mixed message: Hiring in the United States dropped to its weakest pace in nearly a year, but the unemployment rate managed to reach its lowest level in nearly a decade. The jobs report pointed to dire problems confronting many of the stores populating shopping plazas and malls. Department and general merchandise stores — a category that includes Macy’s and WalMart — shed 34,700 workers last month. Clothiers let go of 5,800. Retailers involved in high-priced big ticket items such as furniture stores and auto dealers barely added jobs. Nor are wages keeping pace. Average hourly earnings for retail employees, including managers, has inched up just 1.1 percent over the past year, compared with a 2.7 percent average increase for all U.S. workers. The struggles of many traditional retailers can be traced most of all to Amazon and other online retailers. Amazon’s Prime membership program, costing $99 a year, has been a juggernaut, with services like streaming music and video that have created fierce loyalty. Analysts say Amazon Prime members disproportionately buy more and spend more. In the process, Amazon has redefined the standards for its rival retailers. U.S. Navy strike group to move toward Korean peninsula -U.S. official

WASHINGTON - A U.S. Navy strike group will be moving toward the western Pacific Ocean near the Korean peninsula as a show of force, a U.S. official told Reuters on Saturday, as concerns grow about North Korea’s advancing weapons program.

Earlier this month North Korea tested a liquidfueled Scud missile which only traveled a fraction of its range. The strike group, called Carl Vinson, includes an aircraft carrier and will make its way from Singapore toward the Korean peninsula, according to the official, who was not authorized to speak to the media and requested anonymity. “We feel the increased presence is necessary,” the official said, citing North Korea’s worrisome behavior. The news was first reported by Reuters. In a statement late Saturday, the U.S. Navy’s Third Fleet said the strike group had been directed to sail north, but it did not specify the destination. The military vessels will operate in the Western Pacific rather than making previously planned port visits to Australia, it added.

This year North Korean officials, including leader Kim Jong Un, have repeatedly indicated an intercontinental ballistic missile test or something similar could be coming, possibly as soon as April 15, the 105th birthday of North Korea’s founding president and celebrated annually as “the Day of the Sun.” Earlier this week U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping met in Florida, where Trump pressed his counterpart to do more to curb North Korea’s nuclear program. Trump’s national security aides have completed a review of U.S. options to try to curb North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs. These include economic and military measures but lean more toward sanctions and increased pressure on Beijing to rein in its reclusive neighbor. Although the option of pre-emptive military strikes on North Korea is not off the table, the review prioritizes less-risky steps and de-emphasizes direct military action. Uzbek man main suspect in Swedish truck attack that killed four

STOCKHOLM - A 39-year-old Uzbek man being held in custody is the suspected driver of a hijacked beer delivery truck that ploughed into crowds in central Stockholm, killing four people and wounding 15 in an apparent terror attack, police said on Saturday. The man, previously known to Swedish intelligence services as a marginal figure with no clear links to extremist groups, is suspected of mowing down pedestrians on a busy shopping street and smashing through a store front on Friday. “Nothing indicates that we have the wrong person, on the contrary, suspicions have strengthened as the investigation has progressed,” Dan Eliasson, head of Sweden’s national police, told a news conference on Saturday. The man, detained on Friday night on terrorism charges after the attack in the heart of the capital, appeared to have acted alone but “we still cannot rule out that more people are involved,” he said. Police raided several addresses in the Stockholm area on Saturday, according to TT news agency and tabloid Aftonbladet, but told Reuters no further arrests in connection with the attack had been made. JAKARTA - Police shot dead six suspected members of an Islamic militant group in Indonesia on Saturday, they said, after a failed drive-by shooting targeting police officers in East Java. prayers and communal activities, especially around the Lunar New Year. Its main structures feature intricate far eastern-style architecture, creating a vivid and striking sight with no apparent sign of aging. Escaping the hectic traffic scene and stepping into the temple’s courtyard offers a calming sense of peace and tranquillity, with constant wafts of incense smoke from the altars further adding to the spiritual atmosphere. This Kuta oasis is comprised of a main structure, known as the Baktisala, which features large round lanterns

hanging from the rims of its roof supported by giant red pillars wrapped by menacing dragons. Next to the Baktisala is a smaller structure, the Dharmasala, where family prayers take place in front of smaller relics, various Chinese deity figurines and a wall mural of the Borobuder temple. Opposite the Baktisala and under a banyan tree is a unique place of worship where prayers are made to the ‘Four FacedBuddha’. This spot is surrounded by a small moat where a collection of turtles swim around or bask on the

stones, offering a quite a peculiar sight. Outside visitors are welcome to Vihara Dharmayana Kuta, but basic rules to follow include proper attire (no shorts or singlets) and no flash photography in the praying rooms (picture taking of certain relics is forbidden). A friendly senior temple keeper usually stands near the outside altar, either folding joss paper for offerings or arranging incense sticks, and they can provide some useful insights into the temple and its history (in Indonesian and broken English). The Confederation of North and Central America and Caribbean Association Football is moving ahead with the bid that was widely expected before Donald Trump was elected president. There has been concern the plan was unworkable under Trump’s anti-immigrant policies, but even if he serves a second term Trump would not be president in 2026. The confederation made the final decision to go ahead with the bid at its meeting Saturday in Aruba, the person said, speaking on condition of anonymity because the bid will not formally be announced until Monday in Manhattan. In a news release, CONCACAF said the countries will be making a “historic announcement.” The hosting rights are set to be decided in May 2020 — during Trump’s potential re-election campaign. CONCACAF has not hosted the World Cup since the tournament was played at nine U.S. venues in 1994, and the region appears to be the leading contender for 2026, when soccer’s premier event expands from 32 nations to 48. “I think now that there is the potential of 48 teams then a three-nation tournament can happen,” former U.S. forward and ESPN analyst Taylor Twellman said. “Does the U.S. need the other two? No, they don’t but it does make for a unique opportunity for North America to host the tournament.” A successful North American bid appears possible. FIFA barred Europe and Asia from entering the 2026 race because those continents will have

hosted the previous two tournaments. South American soccer leaders are hoping to host a centenary World Cup in 2030. And bidding experts say privately that Africa is not a realistic option this time around. Of potential concern to other soccer federations is how many automatic bids would be awarded to the three-way host. FIFAis considering a plan in which CONCACAF would have six automatic berths, and the three co-hosts would get three of those under the proposal. MILAN - A brace from Gonzalo Higuain gave Juventus a 2-0 win at home to Chievo on Saturday and moved them closer to a sixth consecutive Serie A title as they forged nine points clear of their closest pursuers. MANGUPURA - Vihara Dharmayana Kuta temple stands majestically as one of the very few cultural landmarks Hidden amid Kuta’s traffic frenzy and surfing paradise glamour. Despite its age, the temple is very well-maintained thanks to the generations of local devotees, mostly of Chinese descent, who regularly visit the temple for

prayers and communal activities, especially around the Lunar New Year. Its main structures feature intricate far eastern-style architecture, creating a vivid and striking sight with no apparent sign of aging. Escaping the hectic traffic scene and stepping into the temple’s courtyard offers a calming sense of peace and tranquillity, with constant wafts of incense smoke from the altars further adding to the spiritual atmosphere. This Kuta oasis is comprised of a main structure, known as the Baktisala, which features large round lanterns

hanging from the rims of its roof supported by giant red pillars wrapped by menacing dragons. Next to the Baktisala is a smaller structure, the Dharmasala, where family prayers take place in front of smaller relics, various Chinese deity figurines and a wall mural of the Borobuder temple. Opposite the Baktisala and under a banyan tree is a unique place of worship where prayers are made to the ‘Four FacedBuddha’. This spot is surrounded by a small moat where a collection of turtles swim around or bask on the

stones, offering a quite a peculiar sight. Outside visitors are welcome to Vihara Dharmayana Kuta, but basic rules to follow include proper attire (no shorts or singlets) and no flash photography in the praying rooms (picture taking of certain relics is forbidden). A friendly senior temple keeper usually stands near the outside altar, either folding joss paper for offerings or arranging incense sticks, and they can provide some useful insights into the temple and its history (in Indonesian and broken English). Hamilton started from pole position and led from beginning to end to capture the 54th race title of his career and his first of the new Formula One season. U.S. Navy strike group to move toward Korean peninsula -U.S. official

WASHINGTON - A U.S. Navy strike group will be moving toward the western Pacific Ocean near the Korean peninsula as a show of force, a U.S. official told Reuters on Saturday, as concerns grow about North Korea’s advancing weapons program.

Earlier this month North Korea tested a liquidfueled Scud missile which only traveled a fraction of its range. The strike group, called Carl Vinson, includes an aircraft carrier and will make its way from Singapore toward the Korean peninsula, according to the official, who was not authorized to speak to the media and requested anonymity. “We feel the increased presence is necessary,” the official said, citing North Korea’s worrisome behavior. The news was first reported by Reuters. In a statement late Saturday, the U.S. Navy’s Third Fleet said the strike group had been directed to sail north, but it did not specify the destination. The military vessels will operate in the Western Pacific rather than making previously planned port visits to Australia, it added.

This year North Korean officials, including leader Kim Jong Un, have repeatedly indicated an intercontinental ballistic missile test or something similar could be coming, possibly as soon as April 15, the 105th birthday of North Korea’s founding president and celebrated annually as “the Day of the Sun.” Earlier this week U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping met in Florida, where Trump pressed his counterpart to do more to curb North Korea’s nuclear program. Trump’s national security aides have completed a review of U.S. options to try to curb North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs. These include economic and military measures but lean more toward sanctions and increased pressure on Beijing to rein in its reclusive neighbor. Although the option of pre-emptive military strikes on North Korea is not off the table, the review prioritizes less-risky steps and de-emphasizes direct military action. Trump spoke with South Korea’s acting President Hwang Kyo-ahn on Friday, the White House said on Saturday in a statement which did not mention the strike group. (rtr)

Uzbek man main suspect in Swedish truck attack that killed four

STOCKHOLM - A 39-year-old Uzbek man being held in custody is the suspected driver of a hijacked beer delivery truck that ploughed into crowds in central Stockholm, killing four people and wounding 15 in an apparent terror attack, police said on Saturday. The man, previously known to Swedish intelligence services as a marginal figure with no clear links to extremist groups, is suspected of mowing down pedestrians on a busy shopping street and smashing through a store front on Friday. “Nothing indicates that we have the wrong person, on the contrary, suspicions have strengthened as the investigation has progressed,” Dan Eliasson, head of Sweden’s national police, told a news conference on Saturday. The man, detained on Friday night on terrorism charges after the attack in the heart of the capital, appeared to have acted alone but “we still cannot rule out that more people are involved,” he said. Police raided several addresses in the Stockholm area on Saturday, according to TT news agency and tabloid Aftonbladet, but told Reuters no further arrests in connection with the attack had been made. Police kill six suspected Islamic militants in Indonesia

JAKARTA - Police shot dead six suspected members of an Islamic militant group in Indonesia on Saturday, they said, after a failed drive-by shooting targeting police officers in East Java. Indonesia has the world’s largest Muslim population and has been on high alert over a recent resurgence in radicalism inspired by the extremist group Islamic State. After a police chase the six

abandoned their vehicle in a village in the Tuban area, not far from the industrial city of Surabaya, and attempted to flee into a plantation where they were all killed in a second gun battle with police,

East Java Police spokesman Frans Barung Mangera said. “By around 5pm we had immobilized all of them,” Mangera said, confirming that all six had died during the incident. A box of 9mm bullets was found in their vehicle, he said. Police were monitoring the vehicle prior to the attack, he said, in connection with the Friday arrest of three suspected members of the group, Jemaah Anshorut Daulah (JAD), who were allegedly planning an attack on a police station and had bought M16 machine guns from the southern Philippines. “We tried to stop that vehicle, but the vehicle did not stop,” Mangera said, adding that those in the vehicle “took out weapons and shot at officers.” Indonesia has had some major successes tackling militancy inspired by al Qaeda’s attacks on the United States in 2001. But there has been a resurgence of Islamist activity in recent years, some of it linked to the rise of Islamic State. The most serious incident last

year was in January when four suicide bombers and gunmen attacked a shopping area in central Jakarta. Jemaah Anshorut Daulah is an umbrella organization on a U.S. State Department “terrorist” list that is estimated to have drawn hundreds of Islamic State sympathizers

Retail store job cuts deepen as more buyers migrate online

NEW YORK — Retail stores are cutting jobs at the sharpest pace in more than seven years, evidence of a seemingly inexorable shift away from employee-heavy stores as Americans increasingly shop online. A combined 60,600 retail job losses over the past two months have had less to do with the health of U.S. consumer spending than with changes in buying habits. In the age of Amazon, traditional stores, from J.C. Penney to Macy’s, have accelerated store closures and are experimenting with the use of fewer employees to staff the remaining stores. The industry has also been bruised by a string of bankruptcy filings, most recently from Payless ShoeSource. The company announced this week that it was closing nearly 400 stores, nearly 10 percent of its fleet. The job cuts in the retail industry, unwelcome as they are, are still a relatively minor burden for the overall U.S. economy. But for Americans seeking a foothold in the job market, the pullback represents a painful obstacle. Retail accounts for nearly one-third of first-time jobs in the United States, so a retrenchment by the industry’s employers can block access to the job market for many. As shopping on the web has expanded, retail jobs have represented a declining share of the labor market. They now account for 10.9 percent of jobs, compared with 11.6 percent in 2000, says Michael Niemira, principal of The Retail Economist, a research firm. And experts expect more store closings — and job losses — in coming months. “It’s principally about the impact of online shopping and how consumers are shopping differently than ever before,” Niemira said. “It’s harder for the industry to consistently do well and MAKE MONEY.” Take Fernando Ramirez, a 19year-old restaurant server and college student, who was looking Friday to buy some sweaters at a Kohl’s in Tustin, California. Ramirez said he stops at a department store or mall once or twice a week to see what’s available. But most of his buying is done on the web. “It’s mostly to browse and see

what they have,” said Ramirez, who lives in Tustin, Calif. “I do more of my purchasing online now.” The two-month contraction in retail jobs — 30,900 lost in February and 29,700 in March — marked the largest two-month decline since December 2009, when the industry shed 62,200 jobs. That month’s loss had signaled the end of a prolonged decline in the industry resulting from the Great Recession. The retail industry losses for February and March were contained in Friday’s U.S. jobs report from the government. The report offered an overall mixed message: Hiring in the United States dropped to its weakest pace in nearly a year, but the unemployment rate managed to reach its lowest level in nearly a decade. The jobs report pointed to dire problems confronting many of the stores populating shopping plazas and malls. Department and general merchandise stores — a category that includes Macy’s and WalMart — shed 34,700 workers last month. Clothiers let go of 5,800. Retailers involved in high-priced big ticket items such as furniture stores and auto dealers barely added jobs. Nor are wages keeping pace. Average hourly earnings for retail employees, including managers, has inched up just 1.1 percent over the past year, compared with a 2.7 percent average increase for all U.S. workers. The struggles of many traditional retailers can be traced most of all to Amazon and other online retailers. Amazon’s Prime membership program, costing $99 a year, has been a juggernaut, with services like streaming music and video that have created fierce loyalty. Analysts say Amazon Prime members disproportionately buy more and spend more. In the process, Amazon has redefined the standards for its rival retailers. Garbage truck crews overwhelmed

SINGARAJA - It has become a habit that celebration of major Hindu feast days in Buleleng will result in increasing waste production compared to usual days. As on the recent Galungan, almost all locations of garbage containers belonging to Buleleng Environment Agency (DLH) at several locations were overloaded. Surely, this situation caused the crew of garbage transportation trucks in North Bali to be overwhelmed to cope with the increase of waste production in this region. Increased production of waste began to occur on Penampahan Galungan or Tuesday (Apr. 4) to Thursday (Apr. 6). Garbage containers of DLH Buleleng placed in Singaraja town to villages seemed overloaded. Moreover, the garbage spilled up onto roadside. This situation is disturbing sights because the garbage starts to perish and spread stenches. Amid the surge of garbage volume, transport activity became late because the DLH provided the opportunities for garbage transport crew to celebrate Galungan. They would be on duty late in the afternoon, so that such short time is not enough to transport the entire garbage. Head of the DLH Buleleng, Nyoman Genep, did not admit if the transportation of garbage on the feast day was overwhelmed. He said no garbage transportation crew took holidays. However, the transport time usually carried out in the morning is temporarily moved to late afternoon. Short time and greater volume of garbage than

on the ordinary days caused some garbage to be unable to be transported to landfill. To overcome the problem, the DLH optimized the transportation in accordance with schedule that started to be back to normal on Friday morning (Apr. 7). “It is a commonplace happening when entering feast day. No garbage trucks take holiday, but the garbage is transported in the afternoon. Indeed, there is some garbage remaining not to be transported, but we will optimize the transport from Friday because the schedule is back to normal after the holidays,” he said. Genep also added that the volume of garbage dumped at the location beyond the garbage containers on major feast days also increased. Responding this condition, DLH Buleleng is still transporting the garbage even though dumped by residents outside the containers. However, the transportation is not optimal. This happened because the officers transported first the garbage put at the location of container, after that it is resumed with the transport of garbage outside the containers. “Locations of the containers are in Singaraja and some others at rural areas. Beyond these, there is indeed garbage dumped at roadside or private land. We continue to serve the transportation, but first take at the location of containers. To avoid environmental interference, we hope the garbage should only be dumped at the location of containers,” he explained. (kmb38)

The data of the ministry differ much from the version of the central statistics agency (BPS) of Bali that only show 3.1 days. The special committee ultimately found the fact that within 10 days the foreign travelers are not entirely staying in Bali. However, they also ‘resume’ their travel to other regions in Indonesia. “So, the data (on average length of stay of 10.08 days) source from the ministry of tourism. The data indicate their arrival in Bali until departing from Bali. Probably they also travel to Banyuwangi or to Lombok, and then arrive again in Bali. After that, they return to their home country,” said the Head of the Bali Development Planning Board and R & D, I Putu Astawa, after meeting with the special committee regarding the accountability reports (LKPJ) of the regional leadership in the Bali parliament house on Monday (Apr. 3). Astawa recognized that the data of BPS are different from the data of the minister of tourism. Nevertheless, the data of ministry of tourism and BPS are equally required for the planning of Bali provincial government. “All the data are important because those of the ministry of tourism can be used to calculate the amount of foreign exchange generated in Bali. Travelers making a visit to Bali, staying in Bali, spending money in Bali are counted as export of services. For the sake of our planning, both data must be elaborated and processed,” he said.

Astawa added there are many challenges faced by Bali to increase the length of stay when referring to the BPS data mentioning only 3.1 days. Among others, there are concerning transportation to other regions that have been getting easier. For example, there has been a flight access to Labuan Bajo or Lombok. Ease of the access definitely increases the interest of travelers to visit other regions in Indonesia. Besides, Bali is also faced with the competition against the 10-New Bali. “To work around this, we must create attractive destinations for travelers at home in Bali. We have to build tourism village, synergy between agriculture and tourism, and develop the potential of Nusa Penida to increase the length of stay,” he concluded. Chairman of the LKPJ Special Committee of the Bali House of Representatives, AAN Adhi Ardhana, said that recognition of the regional development planning agency (Bappeda) related to travelers ‘escaping’ Bali has reinforced the position of Bali as a tourism hub. However, it does not mean that Bali is unable to grab the opportunity to extend the length of stay of travelers on the Island of the Gods. “We agree to become a tourism hub so as to add potential guests. From this potential of guests we expect to get an increase in tourism revenue,” he said. Adhi Ardhana added that destinations in Bali should be explored in order to get maximum results. Thus, travelers that previously have spent one or two days outside Bali from a total of 3 days could be transformed into longer stay in Bali. As becoming a hub, travelers will certainly come out of Bali in addition to vacationing in Bali. “There has been chance of 10 days, why is it abandoned? At least, the average length of stay of the travelers could remain 5 days,” added this PDI-P politician from Denpasar. If the opportunities are abandoned, said Adhi Ardhana, Bali will also lose in terms of Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP). Chief of Buleleng Police Narcotics Investigation Unit, Ketut Adnyana T.J., with permission from the Buleleng Police Chief, Made Suka Wijaya, explained that for three months namely from January to March his unit had arrested 17 offenders of drug cases. In details, four people were arrested in January and seven other people in March. It indicates the circulation of drugs in Buleleng is still rampant. The offenders are not just from outside the island. A number of Balinese people are also registered both as users and dealers. “There is a tendency that the cases increase. Those who have been arrested are dealers and users,” he said recently. Based on the results of investigation, the illicit goods are obtained from dealers in Java. It happens because the purchasing price is relatively cheap, namely around IDR 1 million per gram. “Then, here (in Buleleng--Ed) it is sold for IDR 1.8 million. The profit is quite large. This triggers the circulation,” he said. Meanwhile, related to the users, their existence is just like an iceberg. Thus, it also gets a serious concern to be eradicated. “Those who consuming are triggered to feel different sensations,” continued this officer from Seririt. To anticipate the emergence of such cases, Adnyana claimed to have intensively disseminated both to general public and students. Chinese traveler sinks on Tanjung Benoa Beach

MANGUPURA - Travelers who were doing activities on Tanjung Benoa Beach, South Kuta, Badung, precisely at Novotel Hotel, were shocked on Tuesday (Apr. 4). It happened because a traveler from China, Wang Qian, 32, sank while swimming. The victim could be found and directly rushed to BIMC Hospital but he was declared to have died. Chief of Denpasar Waters Police, Ketut Suparta, when asked for his confirmation on Thursday (Apr. 6) justified the incident. Some witnesses have been examined, while the victim’s wife could not be questioned because of being severely shocked. “We have not yet known whether the victim could swim or not because his wife could not be questioned,” he said. According to witnesses, it hap-

pened at 10:30. The victim with his wife came to the beach in front of the hotel where they were staying. Once arriving on the beach, the victim took bath and joined the other guests, while his wife was waiting on the beach. Few minutes later, the witnesses Nyoman Arianta, 39, an employee of Bali Apollo, and Wayan Dana, a security guard of Novotel, saw the victim sinking at the bottom of the water. The victim was evacuated and taken to BIMC Hospital. After receiving treatment, a few moments later the victim was declared to have died. “The victim was found about 15 meters from the beach. Rhea Seehorn answers call on ‘Better Call Saul’

NEW YORK — Kim Wexler may be the most quietly complicated character on TV. She is the levelheaded, nose-to-thegrindstone Albuquerque lawyer who, two seasons into “Better Call Saul,” remains full of mystery and contradictions. Most paradoxically (or so it seems): How, both professionally and romantically, Kim long ago threw in with fellow lawyer Jimmy McGill, the series’ hero played by Bob Odenkirk, a freewheeling rascal who cuts corners with such gusto his squares become circles. He, of course, will eventually double down on his duplicity by rebranding himself Saul Goodman and serving a key role in the meth-making mayhem of “Breaking Bad” (which aired from 2008 to 2013). But in “Saul,” the prequel of “Breaking Bad,” Jimmy’s soul remains in play as Kim appeals to his better nature, and he to hers. “There’s a lot of history between them, but also a lot of boundaries,” says Rhea Seehorn, who plays Kim. “It isn’t flirting and sexual in a superficial way. There’s a rich friendship and a real respect going back and forth. “Kim is a conduit for the audience

for what they love about him,” she adds. “No viewers want to think about how someday, as Saul, he will order hits on people, but we do love that Jimmy colors just outside the lines remarkably well. “I don’t look at each season of ‘Better Call Saul’ as a countdown to ‘Breaking Bad,’ thinking: ‘We’re this much closer to him being Saul.’ But in season three you get more glimpses of Saul emerging in Jimmy. Bombings at Egyptian Coptic churches kill 36, injure more than 100

TANTA/CAIRO - At least 36 people were killed and more than 100 injured in bomb attacks on two Coptic churches on Palm Sunday, in the latest assault on a religious minority increasingly targeted by Islamist militants. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attacks, which come a week before Coptic Easter and in the same month that Pope Francis is scheduled to visit Egypt. The first bombing, in Tanta, a Nile Delta city less than 100 kilometres outside Cairo, killed at least 25 and injured at least 78, Egypt’s Ministry of Health said. The second, carried out just a few hours later by a suicide bomber in Alexandria, hit the historic seat of the Coptic Pope, killing 11, including three police officers, and injuring 35, the ministry added. Pope Tawadros, who had attended mass at Saint Mark’s Cathedral, was still in the building at the time of the explosion but was not harmed, the Ministry of Interior said. The bombings come as Islamic State’s

branch in Egypt appears to be stepping up attacks and threats against Christians. In February, Christian families and students fled Egypt’s North Sinai province after a spate of targeted killings. Those attacks came after one of the deadliest on Egypt’s Christian minority, when a suicide bomber hit its largest Coptic cathedral, killing at least 25. Islamic State later claimed responsibility for the attack. Thousands gathered outside the church in Tanta shortly after the blast, some wearing black, crying, and describing a scene of carnage. “There was blood all over the floor

and body parts scattered,” said a Christian woman who was inside the church. “There was a huge explosion in the hall. Fire and smoke filled the room and the injuries were extremely severe,” another Christian woman, Vivian Fareeg, said. President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and Prime Minister Sherif Ismail are set to visit the Tanta site on Sunday and Sisi has ordered an emergency national defence council meeting, state news reported.
